Good, classic drive-in with solid burgers and cheese curds.

I understand why they're only open for a limited time during the year. It's a gimmick honestly, they make crappy burgers with Velveeta cheese. I'm sorry! I just feel as though this restaurants like this make Kenosha the Pawnee, Indiana (yes parks and recreation pawnee indiana lol) of Wisconsin. So mediocre and greasy.

A kenosha tradition longer than I've been alive. Good food, reasonable pricing, and nostalgia that you can't get anywhere else. I don't understand the haters giving one star and nothing but snarky comments. Pay them no mind.

This place would be great if they were open after bar close, then you wouldn't care about the grease soaked mess you are dining on. Slow service and lowest possible quality. Culver's, Ron's, Spot, Andy's, pretty much ever other place is better.

Not a bad drive in. Nothing spectacular but the food is decent. The usual fare of burgers, fries, onion rings, dogs soda and ice cream. I had a cheeseburger, fries and root beer float. They were all satisfactory but nothing memorable. If I am in the area for a quick burger I would stop in.

If you want to die fat, diabetic and alone, this is the place for you. Overhyped, overpriced drive in food, no different from the spot, except not open all year. Tried it for my first time after getting tired of hearing how good it was from folks and not surprisingly, was disappointed. Don't waste your time.

Always great food to be found here, with friendly staff. Do yourself a favor and eat at an authentic drive in!

This place has the best burgers. It's only open for a short time during the year (spring and summer) and it's always busy. Originally called Washington Road Drive In, it changed it's name to Big Star in 1959. When you get there you pull into a space and a car hop comes to take your order and brings a tray to your window. You have the option to sit on a picnic table and walk up to the window to order and you can also get it to go. They only take cash which some times is a little inconvenient but I know they do it to cover their butts. Their burgers are topped with either Velveeta cheese or Cheese Whiz. Not too sure. Their food is always hot. Fries are always crispy and you can order them with a side of cheese. Who can't go wrong with more cheese? It's cheap, quick and a little greasy. The car hops are always pleasant. Also if you like root beer you can get it in a frosted mug.

A Kenosha tradition open the 1st weekend in March to Labor Day, students bail on school and people call in sick the week it opens. People do overrate it but the food is really good. The food is good and made fresh to your order. Onion rings are better than the fries. Burgers are great for the price and the corn dogs are like the state fair. Cheese curds are cheese curds, this is Wisconsin- worth trying. Don't forget to tip, some don't because it is "fast food" but you do dine in (your own car but you do dine in). Mind you service is not going to be like a trypical restaurant, the most I've seen were 2 waitresses to serve the entire parking lot. Girlfriend has peanut allergies and has no issues here, she loves it = 5 stars.

This is my favorite place to visit in the summer! Don't go to the rival The Spot. Big Star is awesome with their burgers with that yummy cheese. Fries are really great, too! The food always comes to the car hot and fresh. Rootbeer is a must with this meal.

Kenosha Tradition open about 1st weekend in March to Labor Day. Great cheese burgers and onion rings, and better yet the shrimp basket is the best. Food is very reasonable compared to other places in town. Get a root bear in a frosted mug...nothing like it.

Overrated in my opinion. Only open a few months throughout the year, so people freak out when they open for the season. Just ok food, nothing special here.

One of the best burger joints around. The cool thing is: They have an extensive menu with plenty of other items if you don't feel like a hamburger. The have great milkshakes and I highly recommend you try one! Service is quick, but the only bad thing is that Big Star closes up for the Winter. :(

Not a bad place for some cheap, greasy food. It's a drive in, so you park your car and they come out and take your order. We got the cheese curds, cheeseburger, fish sandwich (I believe it's cod), cheese fries, and a pretzel. The curds were delicious as was the fish sandwich. What really turned me off was the pretzel though. It was so frickin hard I could barely chew it. Not even a side of cheese sauce could save it. The service was great, nice waitress (?) who brought out our food in a timely fashion.

The food and service is ok. Nothing too special, although the experience was unique. The onion rings were my fave - fried perfectly and the onion didn't slide out of the ring leaving nothing but breading.

Woo hoo cheap cheeseburgers! I try to go to Big Star whenever I come home (in the summer only, boo on not being open year-round) This place gets crowded, but I honestly have never had to wait too long for my food.

Took my grandson there today because he raves about the place. OMG the food was awful. I only ate 1/2 of my hamburger and just a couple of french fries. An hour later I got sick in a store; perhaps it wasn't the food, but I'll never go there again. On the plus side the service was friendly and efficient and the food is inexpensive. However this is not enough to make me return.

Best burgers in town! Hands down! Wish it were open year round but maybe that is what makes everything here so special! When it first opens up for the summer it does get a bit crazy and hard to find a spot at the drive in but well worth circling the lot a few times till something opens up! Oh yeah and the cheese fries are a must have with any meal! BOOM!!

Always a good time at big star. Me and friends will make a twenty five plus mile drive simply to have dinner or lunch here. It's that good. Just avoid one server..I've uploaded a photo of her. Anytime she takes our order it's gotta be repeated multiple times and eyes generally inattentive and she doesn't seem to care. Otherwise I've always had a good time here. Coming here for years now.

The food I had was terrible. You'll see that I disposed most of what I ordered into the trash. I had the smallest hamburger: a 99-cent White Castle clone that was not edible. Tasteless burger, greasy grilled onions, gooey white bun. A few bites and I threw it in the trash. The onion rings were terrible: soggy, limp, bland, originally frozen, I guess. A few bites and I threw them in the trash. The crinkle-cut french fries were also limp and not crispy. A few bites and I threw them in the trash. The broasted chicken was good, but not great. The only item that I actually ate. Tomorrow is their final open day of the season...I sure won't miss them when they're gone!

Classic cheeseburgers that have you coming back for more. If your a resident or a visitor this is a must stop. Big Star is closed during the winner and opens from spring til end of summer. It's good to the point where everyone freaks out and updates their status that they are going to Big Star.

In Kenosha, you are either a Big Star fan or a Spot fan. Northsiders typically favor Big Star and the Southsiders favor the Spot. The Spot tried and failed to open a place on the north side... No dice Spot. I'll preface my review with the fact that I grew up here and Big Star has a huge nostalgic impact for me. I remember going to the bike races in the summer over at Washington Bowl (velodrome) and walking over to Big Star for a cone or a burger. I remember driving to Big Star in high school for lunch once it opened for the season (even though The Spot was closer) That being said, Big Star is the quintessential American Drive-In. The menu is still posted above where you drive in. You expect someone from Happy Days to stroll through the parking lot. The food.. well.. you could probably get better burgers at lots of places, but not with the same ambience. And the double cheese burger is actually pretty damn good (not great mind you, but pretty damn good, get it with everything). They still serve the same crinkle cut fries they have been serving for 50 years. Honestly, the food is at best a 3 to 3 1/2 star experience. Part of the reason I love the double cheeseburger is the nostalgia. But if you look at the total package here, it's 4 star stop...

  • Nicole J.

This is the ULTIMATE drive in. The spot has nothing on Big Star! Get the double cheeseburger with everything. It includes grilled onions that will make you feel like a you need a shower when you're done but it's SO worth it.

I have been only one time. Our waitress was completely incompetent. Messed up everyone's order around me. I ordered food for the family and when I got home I was missing my cheese curds. I should have checked closer, but I shouldn't have to check to make sure everything is in the bags before I leave. I called right away and they offered to put me down for a FREE cheese curds on my next visit. First of all, they are not FREE. I paid for them, but did not get them. I wanted so badly to hate the food but I can't. The food was good and exactly what I was expecting, the service was not! I will go back and hopefully will have a better experience.

My first drive in...at least I did it before 40! We drove in on a Saturday Night at 6pm in the pouring rain...we were lucky to get the last open spot under the awning. The menu is simple: burgers, hot dogs, fries, shakes...etc...and you can't miss it because it is hanging across the whole awning...no need for a menu here. The waitress was very prompt. She came to take our order as soon as we rolled in but we needed a few minutes to check out the offerings. I had the double cheeseburger, onion rings and chocolate shake. The double cheese comes with ketchup, mustard and grilled onions. It was really tasty and reminded me of a big white castle burger. The onion rings were not that great. The shake was very good. Highlight of the night...a tray hanging from my drivers side window...priceless. I wonder if it is legal for me to drive with it attached. I might want to install a permanent one to give me a little more room when I'm driving...hopefully my coffee and paper won't blow away. Okay back to Big Star. The food was good not great. It feels like a piece of history and I am glad I got to experience a drive in with my family for the first time.

This place has the best smoothies and if I want a weeks worth of soda this is the place to go!!

Since there's already quite a few lengthy reviews, let me just hit a few key points. - one prior review said something about "best onion rings" - can't agree with this. Almost $2, for 8 average rings - nothing special - one prior review said "$1 cones" - they're now $.1.25 - still a deal for basically a 2 scoop cone - burgers are still less than a buck (but they're not very larger). A double-burger is about $2, while a quarter pound burger will set you back almost $3 - service was top notch, quick, friendly, helpful - location/seating - you eat in your car. If you have quite car next to you, it'll be quiet. If you have smokers next to you, it'll be smokey. If a motorcyclist decides to rev his engine, it'll be noisy. If it rains, just hope you're under the awning.. Summary - it's a great place to inexpensively eat some good 'ol fashion drive-in food (don't expect health food on this menu).

What a flash back to the good old days! Big Star is a great spot to pull into on a nice day and leave the windows wide open...while eating of course. If you have kids, this is a perfect place to feed them with cheap prices. I don't think their price signs have changed since it opened! (and it's age shows with the shining, old-fashioned neon sign that points to the entrance). Where can you spend less than $5 a person anymore??!! The friendly waitresses take your order in their bright red shirts after giving you a fair amount of time to make up your mind. From there, choose any menu item which often comes in a lunch box with yummy jagged-cut french fries. If you order a root beer, you get it Wisconsin style in a frosted glass mug with light ice on the top. The best part of all are the ice cream cones that are $1.00!! You can't beat that for a cone with two heaping scoops! Two quick additions: Don't be those rude customers who pull into the boring lot and make the waitresses not only walk, but slow down the service for the rest. Also, as long as you don't get unlucky by having a trashy car with wrinkled smokers pull up next to you, only adding to the exhaust fumes, you're all set for a nice spring/summer meal. **In other words, don't smoke while eating because the smoke and ashes may ruin others food!** You could say I gave this place 5 *s because I was high off fumes...that could be, but I enjoyed myself a lot by feeling the reminiscent breeze. Lastly, Big Star is quieter, less greasy and less rowdy than it's competitor the Spot (which I heard is now closed).

My kinda place!! Food is AMAZING.. Prices are VERY REASONABLE!! If you want lightning fast service and pre made food, go elsewhere.. if you wanna wait a few mins as your order is made for you after you order, go here.. its that simple!!

Who doesn't love an old-fashioned drive in? Our waitress was pretty straightforward and polite but no rollerskates?! Come on... Even if she was too old for rollerskates she could have at least swished her legs out to give the *impression* of rollerskating! Just kidding... Well the food was okay, about what you would expect from an old fast-food joint. I got fries that had that freezer burned texture but they were still edible, and a grilled cheese that was perfectly toasty and oozing with cheese. I'm not a Kenosha native so I can't compare it to "The Spot", but it was definitely a fun experience and I would be open to going again.

As a long time patron of The Spot, I decided to give this place a try since I now live closer to the north side of Kenosha. We were there tonight (a Friday) and it was busy with an almost carnival-like atmosphere (the neighborhood is a bit sketchy). On the positive side, the food overall costs noticeably less than The Spot. My 1/2 lb. hamburger with grilled onions was great, not greasy at all. The mozzarella sticks were also very good and comparable to The Spot but cheaper. On the other hand, their root beer is very pedestrian compared to The Spot. Root Beer truly is a highlight of The Spot experience. Also, the onion rings here at Big Star were pretty pathetic. Very thin, almost all breading and barely any perceptible onions. The woman who took our order acted like she never heard of a chilli-cheese dog before...... But she rose to the occasion. Still, we'll probably be back to try a few different items.

Hearing rave reviews about the food my husband and i decided this past Saturday to hop on the Harley and take a ride from Milwaukee to Kenosha. it was a beautiful hot sunny 80 plus degree day. We pulled into the lot plenty of open spaces under the awning pulled into one and before we could shut the bike off we were yelled at that we couldn't park there. They wanted us to park out on the street and basically treated us like biker trash. All we wanted to do was get out of the hot sun and have something to eat. When my husband called and complained he was given an attitude and told this is their policy. Well my policy is to get the word out to everyone I know to never patronize this establishment that discriminates against motercycle riders.

Why is there only four reviews of this place? Damn shame... Just about everyone in town decides whether they like Big Star or The Spot (the other drive-in on the southside of Kenosha), well here's one vote for The Star! The big thing here are the cheeseburgers with the oozing cheese whiz all over the burger. They are very-low priced and while they are rather thin they still fill you up unless you're a slob and need seven ha. The crinkle cut french fries are usually hot and crunchy as well as the onion rings. If you don't go with a cheeseburger try the chicken fingers, they are unreal and are served with french fries as well. The grilled cheese is underrated here too. The root beer is outstanding and you can buy a gallon of it in case you miss it when the place closes down for six months starting September 1. Speaking of, it's August 21st, so go there now before it becomes to late It really hits the Spot, ehh ohh!

Just went tonight. Server took a little time to come to the car, but I guess there were a fair amount of cars that cleared out as we sat there at 7:45/8 oclockish, so I can see that it was a little busy. Food made up for it. I had been there before as it is a tradition for the Carthage mens swimming national team to stop by on our way out of town for nationals. We are leaving tomorrow morning at 9, so we had to make that trip tonight. 1/4 lb. cheseburger was very good, didnt know they used chese whiz on it, so that makes it all the better. I can only imagine how amazing the 1/2 burger is. Onion rings are the best I have ever had. They are the skinnier variety, but you can get a clean bite without pulling the entire onion out with your first bite. Chocolate shake was amazing!

Quick review .:. very inexpensive, nostalgic and modest quality Due to its semi quiet location and modest appearance, only locals will be able to spot it in the sea of Kenosha restaurants. When driving up, the retro prices leap at you in various neon colors. I swear, the prices have changed marginally since I went to Washington Junior High (which it was at that time). Unfortunately, the food has a little less of the retro-glow sheen. Nostalgia goosebumps fade once the food is had. Although everything tastes fresh or classically frozen (the fries and rings of course), the burgers are just okay and the ice cream and other deserts are bland in comparison to the big brother drive ins (The Spot). For the calories and once-a-week ability to eat fast food, its just not worth it.

  • Justin G.

How could I be the first to review this place? It almost seems to be pointless to review since anyone who has lived in Kenosha for any appreciable amount of time knows this place. When i drove in, there were only two spaces left. It is a drive-in with all American greasy fast food, but isn't open all year long. I had the 1/2 lbs. cheeseburger, onion rings, and jalapeno poppers. Everything was good. I would knock it down half a star for taking a while to make my food though.

    (5)
  • Timothy B.

Every year the burger gets smaller and smaller, next year ants will be on the burger instead because its cheaper, somewhat ok food, make sure you have 2-3 hours to get your food when they are busy. Not open year round and not open early or late. Trust me

Big Star is only open during the summer, but serves great burgers during half the year. This is a Drive-in ala Happy Days and A&W. You can eat in your car or at picnic tables under the awning.

really good double slime burgers(double cheese) but you can only get them from march thru august
