Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

I tracked down every good pizza place in the country and I have been to them all. Heck, I saw Lombardi's in NYC on the Food Network in 2002 and I was eating pizza there the very next week. (BTW, my pizza at Lombardi's was soggy and burned....not very good.) BUT...the sausage and mushroom pizza with extra sauce at the Bell is my favorite pizza in the U.S. Even though the Bell uses iceberg lettuce in their Ceaser salad, it is still the best combo that I have ever come across!

Just adding my 5 stars. Best pizza anywhere, and I'm from Chicago.
(5)Laurel T.
Fabulous lunch with Darrell. Pizza, Caesar salad and Philly sandwich all fantastic! I highly recommend.

I just don't understand the appeal of this place. Its dark, uncomfortable and I've yet to see wait staff thats out of high school. I'm not a fan of their red sauce at all and I'll be hunted down for saying this, but I don't like their pizza.

Traveling through Wisconsin vacationing, I was looking for a good place for a sit down meal. Yelp to the rescue! Hurley Wisconsin has a place that can't be beat! Everyone raved in other reviews about the pizza, so I did the expected and ordered the Prime Rib Special. Holy cow! I did not go wrong..no disrespect to the pizza. My cut of prime rib (only made medium rare) was just perfect. I had the King cut and ate every piece of it. My dinner salad was included and the Italian dressing was made with a wine vinegar that perfectly complimented my carnivorous choice. The servers were friendly and without reservations on a Saturday night, seating for 6 took around 20 minutes in a busy restaurant. My only gripe was while waiting I ordered a dirty martini. They did not ask what kind of vodka I wanted nor did they ask on the rocks or straight up. It was served on the rocks in a hi-ball glass. Odd considering Hurley Wisconsin was a mining town that had 86 bars in a small area (Currently 34 bars) as the industry has changed. I will return..

Food and service was very good. Our table was stuck out in the middle of the floor near the cash register so they could cram one more table in. People walking in and out on both sides of us banging into us and our plates etc. Won't come back

One of our favorite places. Ask for 10k (aka Karen). She is the best. The pizza is great. Order extra for the ride home the next day. Try the green noodles and order extras because you will finish the plate. The family salad is really good. Dinner comes with bread and an oil dip. Not sure if it's unlimitted but 10k always takes care of us. Liberty Bell is one of our favorites and you cannot go wrong by eating there.

I've traveled far and wide and no Italian eatery tickles my fancy like the Liberty Bell Chalet or the "Bell" as us locals call it Bernadino and Carmella Fontecchio moved to the Wisconson from Italy in the early 1900's and got their start in the food business by feeding miners. This eventually developed into a full blown restaurant The menu includes american items and everyones favorite italian classics: Gnocchi & Meatballs, Ravioli, PIZZA and much much more. However the MUST have while you are there is Caesar Salad and "Betty's Dressing," The dressing is AMAZING. it's not your typical boring caesar salad either. Only a few select family members know the ingredients to this day :) Enjoy

Excellent spaghetti and meatballs. Definitely will stop here when passing through - and you should too!

Nice dark atmosphere with many old white patrons. My wife being Asian got plenty of stares, enough to make it uncomfortable. The place was loud enough to bring toddlers into. I ordered the pizza and was thoroughly disappointed. It arrives and looks incredible! Upon first bite instantly was reminded of frozen pizza. The sausage was okay, olives from a can, the plain cheese slices were the worst - bringing out that frozen flavor. Our wait staff was great, food mediocre, the ambiance good, but that frozen supermarket taste does not do pizza well.

I don't know what pizza is like on the West Coast, but the pizza at the Liberty Bell is only so-so. It is the best pizza in the area, but considering there are only a handful of pizza places, the title loses a little bit of it's luster. The reason to go here is the Caesar salad. I could make a meal out of it and ask for more. There unfortunately isn't another salad like it. The dressing is the key. They won't give you the recipe and they won't let you buy the dressing alone but they do allow you to order it and have it shipped anywhere in the country. The Bell is one of those places everyone has to have a meal before leaving the Hurley/Ironwood area.

Best pizza in the United States. Hands down. The restaurant has a local, slightly bleak, dark feel. Styled as if a ski chalet of types, it can feel cozy in the winter. Never mind the locals drinking at the bar, the well-worn aged furniture, and slightly bored feeling of the waitresses, the pizza is an outstanding midwestern style, thin crust, square-cut pizza... you can even get green olive as a topping. The Ceaser Salad is apparently popular, however it is not a traditional Ceaser. It has more of a green goddess type of dressing with ham and swiss cheese cubes. Definitely an acquired taste that the locals seem to love. The pasta is average Southern Italian style with lots of red sauce and the noodles can be overcooked. Get the pizza. It's amazing. You won't regret it.

Something happened and the caesar salad isn't the same (used to be my favorite). But, the thin crust pizza is still the same. Good Italian food and good size portions, with plenty left over! Worth checking out, busy with snowmobilers during the winter. Will need reservations on weekend holidays as this is a home town proud for the locals.

Yumm! My family is from the Gile/Hurley area and they frequently visit during the summer for several months and when my husband and I planned a trip to the area, they HIGHLY recommended "The Bell Chalet" and I can see why! The Caesar salad is seriously addicting. When my aunt told us that they have the "best" caesar salad she wasn't kidding (I thought it was a little odd that she would specifically mention a salad in her written tour guide, but it was clearly for good reason). A unique take on it with a lighter dressing, tomatos and cubes of turkey and cheese. I was actually pretty full by the time our pizza came out, but I still had to try that because it was amazing as well! We took leftovers and ate it as a snack after hiking in the Porkies the next day! I wish we could have visited more than once. The atmosphere of this place is also perfect. It's cozy and romantic and just very genuine-feeling.

Place seemed like a good spot to stop because of the positive reviews. That was not our experience. We initially sat in the bar area but needed to move due to over exuberant bar clientele. The staff was real great in letting us move to anywhere we wanted. It was a very large dining room with very few people for a Friday night. We ordered the Caesar salad and we're not disappointed. It had a very good flavor which I have not experienced in a Caesar salad before. The single was very large. We ordered a pizza but we're very disappointed with it. It seems like it had no flavor. Hopefully something was wrong that night because I was thinking the place was ripe for a visit from Gordon Ramsey on Kitchen Nightmares.
(2)Andrea K.
Reliably average. Never amazing, but consistent. Staff is hit and miss. Not as welcoming at it could be. Could be cleaner. Feels very cavey and nit in a good way. Kid friendly. Good pizza.
(3)Miles W.
I ordered the heart healthy chicken lasagna. I actually thought I was ordering lasagna, not pizza. I'm not sure what in the name would make me think it was lasagna. Sarcasm aside, it was delicious! The atmosphere was subtle and had a quiet bar/tavern feel - though I had my order to go. The only reason I choose 4 stars instead of 5 was that the menu (online version) could be a bit updated and that the Chicken Lasagna should probably include something about how it's a pizza... maybe a description that includes the crust? Or call it a chicken lasagna pizza.
(4)Jason L.
Very good pizza! Gnocchi is also a favorite of mine. Been here atleast 10 times. Definitely one of the best restaurants in the area. Weekends during ski season can be a long wait.
(4)Miranda O.
Definitely not as good as It used to be.....also we ordered to go and they forgot to make our order so instead of waiting 20 minutes like they said we waited an hour and a half. Quite disappointed of the quality of the pizza also but those salads are still amazing!!!
(2)AJ S.
The food was good and once we got seated the service was pleasant. (Our server looked like a local high school girl, which is fine. She was friendly and patient (with our 2 kids trying to decide what to order) if slightly unsure of herself. I got the fish fry, my wife got the lasagna and one kid a basic pizza, the other a chicken ceasar salad. They were all slightly above average, except for the salad, which was SO basic for the money. Another reviewer said Bell's is dark and it is, but we kind of liked that. In fact, the kids loved blowing out the candles (they're 11 and 8) and the waitress had no trouble giving us an extra candle and some matches so they kids could continue their fun. The wait at about 7pm on a Friday was long even though when I called I was told there was no waiting. We almost walked out after having asked for reservations during the initial call (they wouldn't take them) but they assured us that there was no wait at that time. When we got there less than 10min later the hostess said the wait was 25min, which is tough with kids plus no room at the bar. I was actually calling another restaurant when they called our name after about 15min.

The bell is a must eat at place when you are in Hurley. The Cesar salad & the pizza are second to none.
(5)Tiffany L.
Pretty decent pizza... really enjoyed the chicken lasagna pizza w/o chicken. What I don't love at all is their sausage. I'm not sure exactly what it is about the sausage. It's almost as if there is chorizo mixed in with it. Strange taste. I like the Caesar salad but I hate the bits of turkey or chicken thrown in it. I like eating here mainly because it's an old favorite... as I've gotten older I've just discovered more and the Bell just don't wow me these days.
(3)Emily T.
I LOVE The Bell! This is by far my boyfriend and my favorite restaurant in the area. There really aren't a ton of great places around here, but even if there were, The Bell would be near the top of the list! I've eaten Italian in many different locales, both rural and metropolitan, and The Bell gets it right. Honestly, if you see a review by someone saying the food isn't good, they're probably trying a bit too hard to maintain their "foodie" rep. No, The Bell's menu isn't cutting edge, but if you want delicious, hearty food and no nonsense, this is your place. My favorite dish is their cheese ravioli and meatballs; you can taste the freshness of the pasta, and while I am not typically a huge fan of meatballs, these melt in your mouth! The gnocchi is really good, too. I love the bread and olive oil dip they serve as a starter, and of course, you can't beat tiramisu if you're a dessert fan. Their salad, especially with Betty's dressing, is supposed to be wonderful (I don't know because I dislike salad, but my boyfriend and his family and seemingly everyone else just adore it). Their pizza is the tastiest in the area, whether you get one of their specialty pies or something standard; I especially like the chicken garlic alfredo and the chicken bacon ranch. The drinks are perfectly potent and inexpensive. Now, I don't typically comment on service because as long as it isn't truly bad I don't care one way or the other... BUT the service at The Bell is outstanding! The whole staff is so friendly (without being pesty) and competent, and they've proven that they will really bend over backwards to please their customers: we went in right around 9 p.m. one night, and discovered that they'd just stopped serving dinners and that we could only get pizza or maybe one or two other things. We said this was fine, but the server could tell I was disappointed and asked the kitchen staff if they would keep things up long enough to make my meal, and they SO NICELY agreed! The Bell can definitely get crowded and noisy, but people in this area seem to prefer an early supper, so if you go in around 8, things are usually pretty calm.
(5)Dirk D.
2 stars only because it has a cool decor inside in the bar area. This is not the place for real Italian food if that's what your looking for. What Italian restaurant has horrible classic Chicken Parmesan and crappy wine? Ding Ding..is that the Bell. Cold red wine on tap and horrible selection. You will usually find the place to be busy if your looking for entertainment though even on Sunday.
(2)Nick K.
Excellent food and has been for years. I've been coming for the last 20 years. Food is consistent, delicious, fresh and fast. Their tomato sauce is home made, pizza is probably some of the best I've ever had and their caesar salad is great. Their salad is huge, an order for two will feed four. Haven't ordered much from the bar but anything I've gotten has been pretty standard. Usually I'll get a gin/ tonic and I can't complain about it! Overall, I've never had a bad meal there. Servers are always friendly and professional too. The only thing I don't like about the place is the lighting! It is always so dark inside, sometimes I can't even see the true color of the food or read the menu. It's been that way for years and obviously hasn't kept people from coming back. So if the only complain I have in that long of a time is the lights, I'd say that is pretty darn good! Just turn up the lights !!!

This is my favorite pizza in the country and I've tried a lot. I live in PNW and the last time I visited the homeland (WI) we made a special trip to Hurley to have Bell Chalet pizza. The crust has a special crispy texture and the sauce is spicy but not too sweet. I'll be going back to WI this summer and we'll make the 200 mile side trip from the MN airport to go to Hurley and the Bell. Don't miss this. Update- The trip in summer of 2014 is done and I'm happy to report this is still the best pizza I've had. From the line outside, I think others agree.
(5)Mike B.
We grew up with this pizza and it has gotten better with age. The sauce is unmistakeable and unique. We think the antipasto salad is the better choice for greens to go with it.
(5)Seth D.
The Liberty Bell Chalet surpassed all of our expectations. The pizza was phenomenal--the toppings were delicious and perfectly proportioned and fresh. The Caesar salad dressing is home made and is a must try. The staff was very attentive and friendly and made for an amazing night away from home. We will be back anytime we're in the area and highly recommend it as a stop for pizza or anything else on their expansive menu.
(5)Eric P.
Fantastic sausage on the pizza. Most unique ceasar salad I've ever had. Pasta is average, good cx/veal parm.
(4)Heather B.
Hurley, WI is not a foodie destination. But, if you're going to eat out while you're in town, the Bell Chalet is the place to go. My family has been coming here for 45+ years, and my husband's parents had their rehearsal dinner here. The 'salads for 2' are large enough for a family (get the 'for 1' if there are 2 of you). The pizzas are great, and they recently added a very good gluten free crust if you have that restriction. The wine on tap is a great deal, as are the cocktails. The last time we were in (5/10/14), we were a little disappointed to see mass-produced signs for buffalo wings on the tables. They definitely take away from the cozy family feel. I think the menu is also in flux because a number of items had been scratched off and were no longer available.

"Table for TWO!!" Ok, so I'm making up for lost time now that I'm on Yelp. I would refer readers to my other restaurant review in Hurley (The Branding Iron) for background story. Suffice to say my friends and I have been making an annual ski pilgrimmage to the U.P. since 1991. I can say that other than the handful of years that I've missed the trip (3 or 4), I have eaten at The Bell Chalet every single year since 1991, and I would not miss coming to this place. This is a family-owned and run italian restaurant/pizza place which has been the bedrock of the restaurant business in this area for EVER. It is a well-run establishment with a full bar for pre-dinner drinks, and a large (and usually full) dining room for lunch/dinner. We do dinner here on Saturday when we come. There is usually a 10 to 20 minute wait, which is actually fine thanks to the bar. The Bell Chalet is famous for their pizza. Being from Chicago, I'm as much of a pizza-snob as anybody else. But the pizza here really is very, very good. They do something with the crust that really works. The sauce has some zip (not too sweet), and it's just a really nice pizza. they also have a full menu of "homade" (yes, that's how they spell it up there) italian favorites, and the basic seafood and chops. They have a decent salad, and better red wine than most places in the U.P. (which is not saying much, but I can't have italian food without red wine and what they have works). The atmosphere is great: this is a bustling place full of people who come here regularly and with high expectations for a nice night out. it's not the quietest place as it is usually jammed and full of groups having a good time and laughing and joking. The waitresses are usually tenured veterans with a great disposition. For the longest time they had an older lady as their hostess who had the thickest Northwoods accent you ever heard, calling out tables over the microphone: "Table for TWO! JOHNSON!", etc. My friends and I used to make up the longest/hardest name possible just to hear her belt it out. Sadly, she passed a few years ago. I miss her. She was great! I've been enjoying great meals at the Bell Chalet for almost 20 years now, and this write-up is long overdue. This is a great place and I wouldn't make a trip to Big Snow Country without stopping in for dinner here.
(4)Brian B.
During a recent stay in Bessemer for a ski weekend we chose the Liberty Bell for dinner one night and it was all we hoped for and more. Our table of six was seated promptly, our server took our drink orders immediately, and our Caesar salad came shortly after ordering. The pizza for our main course was delicious, and the service throughout the night was the perfect balance of courteous without 'hovering'. I'd highly recommend the Liberty Bell if you're in the area, and we'll definitely be back for our ski weekend next year.

This restaurant was a highlight for my trip from Chicago to the Apostle islands. Honestly Bayfield could learn many things from Liberty Bell. I thoroughly enjoyed the family story as well as the romantic castle like environment. Loved the salad! It was huge, homemade, fresh and unique. The pizza had a very delicate crust with med thickness. I love all styles of pizza as long as they are good, this pizza was

This Hurley, Wis. institution will remain special as it's the first time sonny devoured bowl after bowl of salad. Their "Caesar" salad is nothing like a traditional. Almost a chopped salad (tho the iceberg is torn), it has cubes of processed turkey and white (?) cheese, croutons and chopped tomatoes, with a very sweet, almost-Waldorf type dressing. Couldn't tell what was in the dressing, but walnuts and apples/grapes might be good in it too. I asked if they had the dressing available in their deli...answer was no, but I suggested they contract out the recipe! You get a large family-style bowl as an "appetizer" for two - enough for 2-4 people or one 10-year-old and two parents who ate several bowls each. We came for the pizza, which has a unusually sweet tomato sauce and a very good crust, thin but with some substance. It was very good, but I would not rank it the best pizza I've ever had. Maybe second. The place is old school cool (and smoke free July 2010) and it is packed, even when UP snow conditions are bad so sans the snowmobile and ski mobs. We had to wait about an hour, but since we were not in a hurry it was worth it. The waitress said they are packed year-round. Order to go if in a hurry.
(5)Jerrod B.
Loved it. Super fresh. I love garden salads, but the other comments were right about the Caesar.
(5)Zac W.
Great pizza. Very good toppings, sauce and amazing crust. The pizza would be tops in Chicago. Decent seating and ambience. Will def be going back when I am back in town.
(5)Keith K.
are you kidding me, once is enough. Known for their Caesar salads, really a chunk of iceburg lettuce some small pieces of cheese SMOHTERED in dressing is what they are known for, seriously. Interaction with 3 employees and everyone of them inconsiderate, I had the wings, call them what they are, deep fried chicken, no flavor, no sauces. The pizza was fair at best, burnt edges and almost cooked middle. 3rd time in 25 years my wife left no tip at a resturant, yea, it was that bad. You can have the "Bell"... the best is when we were paying our bill, another table was chewing out the same "server" we had for walking away in the middle of taking their order, bet they won't be back either, so it wasn't just us..
(1)R.J. T.
Been going to Bell Chalet for 20 years. Best pizza ever! My mom gave me a gift cert for Xmas!
(5)Steven L.
I heard from the hotel desk that they have the best food in the area. Only ate there once, and it was pretty good. I had the sausage and peppers and ate the whole thing, including salad and bread beforehand (I was stuffed). It wasn't the best I've had but it was A-OK. Staff was very nice and the atmosphere was pretty cool.
(4)Eileen R.
We went back while we were up for xmas and while the caesar salad is still strange and not like any caesar salad I've ever had before, the pizza was great! The vegetarian pizza was so yummy I could've eaten the whole thing myself. Now I'm not gonna say it is the best pizza in the entire country, but it was yummy.
(3)Jeffrey S.
Superb food in large quantity at good prices. The "Caesar" salad gives new meaning to the term salad...absolutely delicious. The pizza is outstanding but should just be ordered as a first course and most of it taken home for the next day's breakfast. That will leave room for one of the beautifully done Italian entrees. If you have to wait for a table it's well worth the time!
(5)Dan O.
Lets see ... how can I phrase this... BEST. PIZZA. EVER. I've been going to the Bell for a loooooooonnng time. My family is from the area and I usually get up there once or twice a year. Priority #1 when getting into town is picking up a sausage pizza. It's a family tradition I guess. It can get busy come winter time with all the ChicAHgo ski folks, snowmobilers, and other snow celebrators. That's cuz they know where the good eats are.
(5)Ashley S.
I've been eating here since I was a kid. The Bell is another must-go while I'm home to the UP. The food is great, I love the atmosphere and I've never had a bad meal here. Their ceasar salad and pizza are the best along with many other good entrees. I suggest the green noodles or the chicken alfredo. The wait for a table is never too long, either.
