Yet another great place that I've been coming to for years. And that's nothing...I was with my great aunt and great uncle, and they said they had been coming for 60 years or so. 60 years...if that's not a testament to their chicken, I don't know what is. Most recently, we came about 2:30pm on a Sunday during a Packers game, and the place was dead (but was packed by the time we left, so clearly people came post-game). The ordering is different, but in a good way - grab a seat near the bar (not in the dining room), order some drinks, and order some food. When it's ready, they'll tell you a table to go to. We sat for about 20 minutes with drinks before ordering food, at which time the kids played outside and the adults played inside, enjoying the fall colors and beautiful river view. It never gets old... I'm not a huge chicken fan, but you don't dare get anything else here (not that there is much else on the menu). I got the "regular' dinner, a mix of white and dark meat, with cole slaw, french fries, and I also did a side of gizzards. The gizzards themselves were not fried, which was a bit of a surprise to me, but appeared to be sauteed instead. Maybe you can get them fried if you ask? They were delicious nonetheless. As were the "real" pieces of chicken - 3 giant pieces to be exact, of which I somehow managed to force two of them down before I was so full that I thought I would explode. Combine that with their fantastic cole slaw, tasty crinkle fries, and the always solid relish tray. And finish with cookies...because why not. AND all with that view. So let's summarize: Basically an entire chicken, with fries/baked, cole slaw, relish tray, and cookies...for like $14. With a view. Shaffer's is great. One thing - my aunt said that they re-use the oil, so coming earlier is better. Not sure if that's true or not, but after 60 years, I'd believe her. That's why we came so early.

Just an update to let everyone know that the Shaffer Park Supper Club burned down several weeks ago, probably from a lightening strike. We stayed at the hotel and I saw the building surrounded by yellow do not cross tape and stopped by and asked about any rebuilding plans - unknown. I have heard that the chicken here was good. Since the building burned I didn't know what to rate it?

I was introduced to Shaffer's by one of my friends whose family has been going to Crivitz for generations. Sadly, I missed our annual trip up there this weekend and my stomach is lonely because of it. I've got to agree with the first poster as they pretty much nailed the description. The jukebox is very 1980 radio. The drinks are fairly potent and the wait for a table forces you to consume a few of them. But most importantly: the chicken and gizzards rule. Up until having Shaffer's fried chicken, a Harold's on the far south side of Chicago was my favorite. Now I'm forced to drive 4.5 hours for my preferred fried chicken. Friends suck.

Shaffer's is a classic. I've been going here as long as I can remember. It's not fancy, its very north woods. And nobody can believe you can eat and drink all night and it be about $25 a head. The jukebox playing Neil Diamond as you walk in sets the tone. All of the bartenders know what an "old fashioned" is (unlike in Chicago). Mrs. Shaffer's famous chicken can't be beat; its greasy and oh so good! French fries don't get any better than this either. If you are daring, order the gizzards--they melt in your mouth. The sugar cookies at the end are the best and the coffee is always perfect. In the summer you can sit outside overlooking the scenic Peshtigo River. The decor may still be from the Brady Bunch era and Shaffer's timing is no coincidence. They make sure you have at least two rounds of drinks in you until your food arrives. But that's all part of the experience and we never complain because that's why we love it there. Play some smear while waiting. And if you go on your birthday be sure to get the special song and dance.

If you come to Crivitz it's a must place to put on your list if you like Chicken because it's fantastic. The Fish is also the best in the area along with the shrimp. The bartenders and waitresses are great and know how to take care of you. If you want a steak your out of luck they don't have one.
