I travel solo for work. At the end of a long day, I always end up in chain restaurants because the menu is familiar -- even though I know the food won't blow me away. My hotel concierge recommended this place. It was the closest, and I was tired. I need to start trusting the decisions I make in this state, because they never disappoint. I couldn't be happier. The staff is incredibly friendly; I kind of feel like they're old friends. The ambiance is dark, and comfortable. Wooden tables and chairs much like my grandmother keeps in garage for a night of playing cards. [To be fair, she also keeps a couple couches and a carpeted rug in her garage.] I ordered beer cheese and cabbage soup an antipasto salad and a margarita. The soup was delicious, and the salad was everything I expected it to be plus twice the size. The margarita tasted kind of like the Jose Cuervo pre-mixed bottle I can buy on my own, but it did the trick. Places like this make me feel like I need to leave that comfort zone of chain restaurants more often. Bravo!

Can't believe I have not rated this place all this time . I love this place. It does have kind of an old feel and a regular spot for the local blue collar workers . The sandwiches are pretty good and other menu items are pretty decent as well. Service is always welcoming and friendly

This is nothing special. Tables are very close together and the menu is mostly fried food. I think this is a better bar than a restaurant.

I don't think I've had a bad meal here. Located in small but cozy Butler, this place is pretty good if you're looking for a place that makes you feel at home. Everything they make is hot and tastes really fresh. Their soups are phenomenal as well. On Fridays, of course they have fish fries! I love love love going here for fish fries. They give you big portions of fish, and you can opt to get their potato pancakes instead of the french fries. I always do. It feels like a fish fry can't be complete without them. I've also gotten their adult mac n' cheese. It was pretty good, I could tell that they made it homemade and not out of a box, and it was baked instead of made over a stove. Along with that, I had a tomato soup. It was so creamy and good, I slurped down the whole thing and I was nearly stuffed by the time I had a few bites of the mac! This place is also pretty inexpensive. You get a lot of food and it's decent. Sometimes I can't finish my entire meal. The waitstaff is my only problem. The past few times I've been there, it seems like they were hovering over my shoulder almost every 2 minutes. I know they're trying to be like the average mothering servers around here, calling you "hun" and "sweetie" every now and then, but damn I'd sure like to enjoy my food without having someone standing over me!
(4)Meghan H.
Cute place with good food and friendly service! Atmosphere is WI bar/superclub, kind of old school. Food wasn't fancy, but really good and service was fantastic. Would love to go back here next time we are in the area.
(4)David K.
Had Father's Day dinner there and was very impressed with the food. The Cajun ribs were tender and flavorful and the zucchini strips were perfect. My wife had the fish fry and the fish was flaky and crispy. The service was friendly and the atmosphere casual. We hope to come back soon!

Maria B. stated "I've never walked away from a meal here hungry or angry." yelp.com/user_details?us… That's a fantastic summation. I regularly stay at the off-the-off-ramp motel nearby for work, and Butler Inn is the nearest place to get a quick bite that won't suck. I would also add that waitstaff presents like a casting call for Wisconsin local pub servers. They run the gamut from giggly to bantering to mothering, but they always make me feel like I'm in Wisconsin, and I'm welcome there. I've had and enjoyed the chicken ('broasted' and rotisserie), various soups, and meatloaf. I usually just get the special, and it's always been good. My favorite offering is the Rueben sandwich, with is made using chunks of corned beef--not lunchmeat.

Nice outdoor patio with a small town diner feel. I had the rueben with fries. It was delicious and would definitely order again!

I landed here on the first Friday in the Lenten season with a good friend who also lives in the north side like moi. It hadn't occurred to us that all the fine Catholics in the world would be out and about finding opportunities to stuff their faces with fried fish. So the parking was a little crazy, but once we made our way inside we were pleased to land a table upstairs right away. The Butler Inn seems to be a culmination of many of the things that I love about Wisconsin. It was spacious and somewhat modest, but accommodating in every way. We enjoyed some Bloody Mary action, I had a cup of delicious clam chowder, and we both had fish. I went for the standard fried Cod dinner with potato pancakes and cole slaw, and I was very pleased. My friend had a walleye dish that the waitress had recommended, and she really loved hers as well. We noted as the evening drew to a close that this may be the perfect place for us to meet up for future similar endeavors. I will definitely be back.

If you're going to hit this place up put your pretentiousness on the back burner - its an old school 1980's, never walk away hungry, corner pub type restaurant. The menu is huge and has some very good traditional Midwest "specialties". Never had a bad meal here, but I also didn't go in here expecting a 5 star treatment as some obviously were --- "Boring"........really?
(3)Erika C.
Came here to watch the Packers game and grab a bite to eat. The appetizers were hugely portioned and the meals were phenomenal. Many TVs that showed the game and attentive waitstaff made sure our beverages were always filled. Great value for the price.
(4)Maria B.
Don't get me wrong, this place is just fine and we enjoy stopping in from time to time. The food is good, not great. But this is a corner bar (granted a big one) so you temper expectations. I've never walked away from a meal here hungry or angry. I'd have given it 4 stars, but there are a couple of things that always annoy me. First, the servers have a tendency to forget about you after they drop off the check. It takes a long time to pay. Second, THE BELL!!!! The kitchen dings a little bell every time a food order is up. They need a better system (invest in pagers, guys!), because the constant ding-ding-ding-ding-ding of that bell is very annoying!!! Get rid of the bell, I will give you a 4th star.

Don't get over excited, it is what it is, and they are good at it. I call it blue collar bowler food. Good job.
(3)Joseph B.
The fish fry was great. Deserts are superb. Always plenty of seating. Great, friendly service. What more can I say, generous portions. So you won't walk away hungry. I am a big guy so I can say I got enough to eat.

Sometimes there's a place.....where everybody knows your name....... This is my Cheers spot. Great little corner bar and grill. But I come here to grab a quick bite on weekends. They have a no over the top decorations or loud entertainment. This is where you can have a great conversation with friends. The staff is friendly and the decorations are stuck in the 70's. It's a great little spot.

Butler Inn chicken sandwich sounded good. charbroiled breast with Butler Inn BBQ sauce. chicken had a texture as if it was pounded to tenderize. BBQ sauce reminded me of grocery store bottled stuff. Kitchen drenched sandwich in sauce.

Went here for lunch today and had the buttermilk peppercorn chicken with a cup of Cajun turtle soup. The chicken was very dry and it did have pepper corns in the breading. The horseradish dressing was tame. The frys were like any coroner fast food burger place. The turtle soup was pretty good and the best part of the meal. I was underwhelmed because this place is like a step or two up from a fast food place. The chicken sandwich and frys were no better than any other burger place. The soup was spicy and in a creamy tomato like texture with turtle and spinach. I would go back for the soup. The whole meal was $13 and over priced for what I had. I could have went to Burger King and got 2 chicken sandwich for $5.00 of the same quality. It looked better on paper. Maybe other items are good because the place was packed and the food was slow coming out of the kitchen. I would not say don't go here because way to many people were in there.

Eh. I used to go here quite a bit when I worked down the street. The past few times it really hasn't been anything to write home about. The location is probably the best thing about this place, as they are right on the corner of Hampton and 124th. Service tends to be really slow. Food is ok, but a little overpriced for what you get, and for the type of restaurant it is. The last time I got a chicken parmesan sandwich, it was really greasy. If we're in the neighborhood and looking for something different than what we are used to getting, we'll give the B.I. another shot. A few suggestions : if you are looking for a healthier option than a side of onion rings, I guess you really need to spell it out. Once I asked for a healthy side (such as a salad) and was presented with a side of onion rings. Huh? Also, if you go on any of the karaoke nights, make sure to bring earplugs. Sometimes it gets really loud in there and it's difficult to hold a conversation if you are near the bar area.

We had a great time on New Years Eve noon (all 12 of us). This is our third year coming here as a group. The food is quite good, the menu varied and affordable while the waitress staff was superb . This is a very good neighborhood type restaurant. We will be back again next year and some other times.
(4)Todd S.
Went for Friday night fishfry. Average service and food. Was a party of 6 and our food ranged from good to poor. Seafood sampler was the worse of the bunch. The Cajun Turtle soup was good and spicy. The fish sampler was pretty good also. We have been going to this place for years and it is always just about this quality. We usually go here because it is convenient.

(Full disclosure-- I worked at the Butler Inn for a couple of months a couple of years ago). I've worked in many restaurants and seen a lot of kitchens, and while this place is nothing special, it's clean and I wouldn't be afraid to eat here. If you do come, do it on a Friday when they have really good clam chowder and a nice fish fry. They are known for Cajun turtle soup, which I have not tried because I just can't bring myself to eat turtle, but it's popular. I would not order a salad, though (except maybe at lunch) because they pre-make them and refrigerate them on all day on the plate, causing them to become dry and lifeless. If you're all about mom-n-pop places who don't answer to a corporate overlord, this is your place. They definitely follow their own rules. It's kind of a place stuck in time, where the waitresses (no, I'm not being sexist; all the servers are women) call you "hon" and the drinks are strong. It's truly hard to believe that it's just across the county line from the city of Milwaukee, because it feels like it's WAY out in the boonies.
(3)Elizabeth R.
It is SO overrated! Seriously. I just do not get why people like this place so much. I would totally pass on it for other venues in the area. The atmosphere is just very musty and boring. The whole place brings your mood down. I would not give it a one star because it was clean. The food was mediocre.

food is generally good. the mexicans that cook are on point, as most mexican cooks are. however, i think that the stable of older female waitresses are like the golden girls. they are slow, inattentive, and at every opportunity they have, they will be sitting down "arranging silverware" the owner is a phenomenal pool player also. but its like land of the dead in there on fish fry days. noting but old people just clogging the place up, slowing everything down. horrible

Wow, I can't believe there hasn't really been a good review for this place! We just stumbled into it yesterday. It was a Saturday afternoon, a little before 1 pm. The place was pretty busy, but not over crowded at this time. Our server was very good - fast service, and just the right amount of "need anything else?"s. I had the BLT burger with onion rings in lieu of the fries, which was the special for the day. It was $7-8. The meat had just the right amount of pink ( i don't like my burgers well done. if you do, you should ask for it. I was not asked, but it seems to have been the default version). I was so glad I asked for the onion rings instead of the fries - they were really yummy! Not too much batter, and shredded really thin. Everything was on the greasy side, but I wasn't looking for healthy, and was in the mood for some comfort food anyway. My hubby had the fish and chips. If you are looking for it in the menu, look under "sandwiches". it's there for some reason... For some reason he thought it was tilapia rather than the cod that the menu said it was. I can't really tell the difference when they are fried, so who knows? In any case, the fish wasn't all that great. I think they were too fat and the batter too think. The fries were also quite on the fat side. Not quite wedges-fat, but about the thickness of 4 McDonald's fries put together..I prefer thin, so I wouldn't order this particular dish. My sister had the turkey burger with chips. She thought "chips" were going to be fries like my hub's fish and "chips", but they were just that - chips. She wasn't happy about them. The burger was a OK, and the turkey was deep fried. Overall, I would go back again for the onion rings and burgers. I saw another person eating a Ruben or some sort of a melt - and it looked so good! i might try something like that next time. I would also only go when I feel like I need some grease. Someone else told us that they have delish wings on Thursday nights, with the hottest sauce she has ever tasted. I'm an Asian nut with super calloused taste buds for spicy... Bring it on! I will write another review once I've figured out how how these wings are.

Being from out of town, i always look for locally own restaurants and thought this looked like a friendly place. I wasn't disappointed as the staff was very nice and the food was decent. The best part was the cheap beer - which i wasn't sure if it was happy hour or not.I'd go back if i am in the area.

First, I should say that we've had a fish fry here several times and the Walleye and potato pancakes were good. Based on that positive experience, however, we stopped on a Saturday noon for a terrible experience. At 12:30 there were only three tables in use. We ordered the Prime Rib sandwich special for $8.95 with a cup of Meatball and Spaetzle soup ($3.25). All this was terrible. The soup was like a left-over gravy. The sandwich platter had a scoop of mashed potatoes made from a box, some gravy from a can ladeled over everything, and two thin slices of very fatty prime rib piled high on two pieces of factory made bread. Perhaps there are some better choices on the menu, but this was some of the worst restaurant food we've eaten in years.
