Awesome place! Ever since I had a bad experience in Ft. Wayne, Indiana I've been a little aprehensive about trying sushi places in non-metro areas. This place was excellent, the best part was the service. And the quality of fish was superb. If you're in Appleton, WI give these guys a shot. They have some great sushi chefs. The Hibachi side looked fun, but I went strictly for the sushi bar.

I love the food and the dining in experience, but beware the takeout. Always slow (have a drink at the bar) and usually wrong. But I crave their sushi so much that its worth going and waiting, and waiting and then waiting some more while hey fix the order. Seriously tasty food.

The grill tables (not hibachi, but individual grill tables) are super fun...grill your own dinner to your liking! Swordfish is firm and fresh and delicious...always something to be wary of in Wisconsin being so far from the ocean.

This is THE place for sushi! Try the squid sauteed in garlic OMG

I love Sushi, but to be honest the last place I thought I'd find really good, Quality stuff was in my hometown! I mean...what are they going to have? Walleye Nigiri? I had heard a lot of good things about this place so I decided to give it a shot. When I walked in I thought I had entered the wrong place because it looked like any other place on College Avenue. The host desk was at the back of the bar and there was nothing that said "Sushi Bar" to me. I asked the Hostess if this was a Sushi restaurant. She smiled (not the first time she'd been asked this) and lead me past a large Hibachi dining room, to another smaller room with the Sushi Bar. The Bar itself was the perfect height for a wheelchair...always a good start. Since I was a little apprehensive, I ordered some individual Sushi. A Salmon, Hamachi and Eel. I was very impressed. they all were fresh, tender and tasty! I had planned on ordering an entree from the menu, but since my initial Sushi was so good, I just added the Chef's Selection Sushi with nine different selections. Everything was really good, but my favorites were the Surf Clam and the Squid. After dinner I finished my night drinking a Sake and watching the NCAA Championship at the bar. I will definitely be back next time I have the chance!

My favorite part of coming back home to visit from Chicago! GO late to avoid the crowd get the dinner for 2. your mind will be blown. I thought i'd write this review because I have lived in Chicago for 2 years almost and have not found a teppenyaki spot to hold a candle to this place! Especially when it comes to price! Single meals here start at 20.00 a person I guarantee when I am back in Appleton you will be one of the first things on my list of things to do. ASK FOR LEE. he is amazing!

Was in town for work and went here the other night. My group went in back for some hibachi action. The atmosphere was very fun and light hearted. The chef was really good. I've been to a couple hibachi places and he was definitely one of the best I've seen. The food was really good as well. I had chicken and scallops. I tried some of the steak from one of the people with me. Steak and scallops were really good. Chicken was standard. The dinner was priced well also. If I'm back in Appleton, I'll keep this place on the list to go, but its not a must go for me.

Excellent sushi and menu. Katsuya & Nakashima never let you down. We moved here from California and this is as good or better than some of the best sushi places we have ever been to. Also has other great selections if you are not a huge sushi fan.

I love Katsu-ya. I love it so much I wish I could just live there. Every time I've been here I've got the teriyaki and it's so good, I can't conceive of trying anything else because I feel like I'd be betraying my favorite, as ridiculous as that sounds. I've been here on my birthday and on an anniversary. The staff are very well mannered and I've never had an issue with the service. They're very receptive to their customers. And the majority of the customers here are very well mannered as well--for the aforementioned anniversary, a total stranger paid for our $40 dinner because he was excited that "such a young couple was willing to try new and exotic foods beyond just cheesecurds." I've associated some great memories with this place and whenever I'm back in Appleton, I always want to come back here. Love it, love it, love it.

Sushi was very good, hibachi was very good but service was very slow.

After numerous trips to Tokyo and Yokohama in my past I missed Shabu Shabu and finally found that Katsu-Ya had it on their menu. Made reservations for last night and unfortunately was disappointed in the experience. Our waitress was either inexperienced or the restaurant has a different approach on how to serve Shabu Shabu. We will probably visit again and try another menu item, but if that visit is another disappointment most likely will not be a returning customer.

Food is excellent!! I'm from the west coast and have lived on the east coast so I've been spoiled with great sushi for as long as i can remember. I was pleasantly surprised to find very good (and surprisingly fresh) sushi right here in the Appleton. Get the nakashima roll and the ultimate Mexican roll if you're a roll person, or my fave is to just get the 9 piece chefs choice sashimi. For an appetizer the jalapeno shrimp poppers are amazing, seriously awesome. Food is excellent, service is suspect though, hence the four stars. But, the last time i was there i did have a nice server, this was the first time EVER for me. Not that this really matters, but: If anyone from Katsu-Ya reads this, get some decent chopsticks, great, nice restaurant but those cheap chopsticks are ridiculous, embarrassing. PS-never tried the hibachi side...

I enjoyed the their sushi! I didn't get a chance to hop over to the hibachi dining but the environment was great! Nice staff and cool bar. The sushi menu had plenty of variety for a great price. One you should try is the Spider Roll its AMAZING! But I would definitely recommend it!

I usually eat at Katsu-Ya/Nakashima on a pretty regular basis. Whenever friends come to town, they always want to go back after I've taken them there previously. The decor is great and the location is even greater. I am a fan of both the Hibachi and the Sushi served there. Service is generally very good as well. The lounge/bar area can feel a bit crowded at times but it's a decent place to have a few before dinner drinks. The bartenders are sometimes a bit disengaging but in their defense they are usually quite busy. The only downside to this restaurant is there tends to be no parking anywhere near, unless you're lucky (This is a problem for many of the great restaurants in downtown Appleton). This is a great place for anyone looking for something different (especially larger groups).

Went here last night to send off my friend who's going to be out of state for a few weeks. This is only my second sushi experience, so while I'm not a sushi virgin, I don't have a lot of experiences to compare it with. As I walked into the bar area to wait for the rest of my party, I was immediately impressed with both the atmosphere and the service. Music was playing, but it was at a level that still promoted conversation. Even more impressive, within less than 2 minutes one of the women behind the bar noticed me and asked if I wanted something to drink. As a short woman in a wheelchair, this is the first time I've ever been acknowledged by a bartender without having to put great effort into flagging them down because they just can't see me. While we waited, I ordered the cucumber basil sake-tini which was absolutely amazing. I ordered a 2nd for my dinner with a little mint added and it paired wonderfully with the 2 sushi rolls I had- the Philly and the Dynamite. Both were out of this world (and the first non veggie sushi I've had). I preferred the Philly as I discovered that tempura in the middle of a sushi roll is a bit of an odd texture experience for me. I would absolutely go back again, especially for happy hour. The only reason I can not bring myself to give this a 5 star rating is that the only form in which matcha was served was in ice cream (which was delicious). At a Japanese restaurant, I expect to find traditional matcha... or at the very least in a martini. ...(updated 11/27) Went to happy hour a few weeks ago. I was really excited because I don't know of another sushi place that has discounted sushi as a part of their happy hour. Actually, if I had to choose between the 2, I'd rather have a sushi discount because I can get drinks anywhere. I came in with my friend and scoped out our seating options. Either the bar or the tables. Unfortunately the tables are really high. So high that as a paraplegic, I could not get up into the chair myself. Once on the chair, it was extremely difficult to eat since I'm so short and the table is so high. It's extremely unfortunate that happy hour is, for all intents and purposes, non ADA accessible (unfortunately this is probably not illegal). I will speak up and ask next time, but it would have been nice if our waitress, who saw my needing assistance to get in the chair and the awkward height of the table), would have asked if I wanted to sit in the dining room as soon as we walked in and she saw my wheelchair. That's part of customer service. Unfortunately this drops my original rating from 4 stars, down to 3. ...(updated 2/28) WOO HOO! Happy hour is now ADA accessible as it's now in the entire restaurant. My rating goes back up to 4. Although my favorite drink, the cucumber basil sake-tini is now off the menu. They still make a great one, but it'll now cost you $9.

Great decor and ambiance. Chefs choice is only basic sushi dishes. Great drink selection and service. Reservation not required.

They have a good hibachi and pretty good sushi...the bar area is a little small but if you're looking for a dimly lit atmosphere at the bar with good sushi it's a pretty good place. Overall, good sushi, good hibachi, good weekend atmosphere to go out for drinks

Kinda shocked actually. Recently had the best sushi of my life in Chicago so figured everything else would be down right weak sauce until I went to a better sushi place. But hey this place was pretty good. I gave it an A+ for hospitality, creativity, ambience (bar scene A+), and its originality (two out of three sushi chefs were white boys?!?!). I undoubtedly have had better sushi but this place blew me away because its up in Wisconsin. The Fire and Ice Roll and the Geisha Kisses were both very creative. Wouldn't have thought all the stuff in those rolls would be so good. If you're a purist sushi eater then this place isn't for you. Its got alot of tasty yet gimmicky rolls (like the Fire and Ice and Geisha Kisses). The quality of the fish itself was par.

Inspired by Leah's recommendation, my coworkers and I checked out Katsu-Ya last night. Yes, its mostly a Hibachi restaurant with some other Japanese items including a long list of maki. My coworkers really enjoyed their hibachi dinner and I tried a selection of nigiri and a spicy scallop handroll and a spider roll. Sushi was nothing special - very run of the mill. Leah - please tell your sushi chef to use less rice for each piece of nigiri. However, I was still happy to eat something besides steak. I'd like to know why does every hibachi Japanese restaurant have to do the same silly routine? Can't people eat hibachi without suffering through a show?

If you have been to Benihannas in CA, then this is the exact same concept: hibachi tables, where you sit around a rectangular table and in the middle, there is a grill thing where the chef cooks your meal in front of you, throws things in the air, makes a volcano out of onions, and has flames up almost near your face! It's a show/meal that not only is entertaining but actually really tastes good! Oh, this place also offers sushi and other Japanese dishes for those who are not interested in the hibachi menu offerings. We were there as 3 couples and each couple had the shrimp, steak and chicken hibachi dinner which included a soup, salad, and dessert and was way more than we needed! Though this is not related to the Benihanna chain as far as I know, like it the chefs are funny and the food was delicious!!!

The 2 star review says it all...I've experienced better. For the price honestly I would say 1 star, but it was hibachi so understandable it was overpriced to begin with. Service fine, fried rice extraordinarily-over gingered, and dinner average. Unfortunately, worst hibachi, and $100 + dinner I've experienced.

Great sushi. The happy hour is a special find-- get discounts on beer and wine and 30% off sushi! This is a rarity... sushi "on sale"??

I have had the pleasure to go to Katsu-Ya dozens of times due to the close proximity to my university. What everyone has been saying about the Hibachi area is true; therefore, my focus will be on the sushi dining area. The modern decor is warm and inviting. Each table is set up for a comfortable amount of privacy at each table. Each table also has a korean BBQ located in the center. I recommend getting a cut of meat as an appetizer prior to the sushi. It is extremely fun way to cook your own food and the cuts of meat are all top quality. I recommend the beef because it will literally melt in your mouth!!! Yes "melt" in your mouth. The nigiri variety is outstanding and the piece of meat is a solid size. It blankets the log of rice is sits on. The Unagi is my personal favorite especially if someone is unsure about eating fish raw on a bed of rice. Unagi is (eel) which sounds gross if you have never had it, but I like to think of it as a "sugar-ee fish" it is extremely sweet and they also include a light sweet eel sauce on top. The sushi menu is extensive, but I would like to steer you towards the special rolls. The presentation is second to none and the taste of each roll is nothing short of incredible. I have had sushi on the coasts and in different countries, and this comes close to the quality you would find in these places. Katsu ya is a great restaurant for groups and couples! Enjoy some saki at the bar, an appetizer, and then a wonderful dining experience. It is kind of pricy, but the quality and service is worth every penny.
