Stopped by this place on the way going up north couple of months ago...kept reminding myself to write them a review! Food is fantastic, authentic indo-malay food! I tried the satay, the platter w/coconut rice. Very homely dishes and big portions! Friendly and sweet couple/owners with great attitude and service! Definitely would come back if I ever go up north again!

What a gem! Unexpected authentic Indoesian cuisine in Appleton, Wisconsin. Exotic and inexpensive. Try the lunch buffet! You can sample many of the dishes. Plus a surprising

I received a very nice reply back to my post. They suggested that I come back and discuss dishes that would suit my less spicy palette. I will do this.

We're visiting from Los Angeles and though it is surprising to find authentic Indonesian food in Wisconsin, it was a pleasure to eat at this family owned restaurant. We got to the restaurant a little before noon and dishes were still being brought out, as they were just finished being made. I would definitely recommend this place, especially if you want to try something new, not to mention the lunch buffet is offered at a really reasonable price of $8.99.

Just had very yummy Goat Curry and chicken satay. Hey Appleton, wake up to wonderful authentic Indonesian cooking. Give this restaurant a try, you will not be disappointed if you like warm spice, rice and family a family ambience. Food can be slow out of the kitchen but realize this is essentially a one woman show.

We found this in the Entertainment Book that we purchased and thought to try something new. I have never before been so horrified by a restaurant! The sweet kids working there have a scrooge for an owner and are forced to treat new customers like second class citizens limiting purchases to the noodle menu (rather than the dishes advertised on the back of the coupon) and stripping the meal of any amenities that would come with a meal. When questioning it the coward behind the counter wouldn't even turn to face us much less acknowledge we were talking to her. We greatly enjoyed our meal down the road.

Food is pretty good to be fair, but don't expect them to refill say after 12pm for lunch buffet. What concerns me is their service. The owner(or I thought who is the owner) lady was not very friendly, never saw her smile. Instead saw her yell at someone's children once.Though they are not my kids, but I will probably never bring my kids back there. Instead the waitress there is super nice, feel bad for the waitress if the unfriendly owner eventually make guest go away.

Appleton, I'm disappointed in you. A friend and I went to this place Sunday at lunchtime and we were the only people there. It kind of blew my mind, because the food was fantastic. I grabbed the corn fritters as an appetizer. They were delicious. Then I moved on to the Nasi Pesel, which I got with tofu instead of chicken. This was a massive plate full of food. It included an omelet-y thing that wasn't even mentioned on the menu. The peanut sauce was on a salad, and it was awesomely spicy. The tofu was cooked perfectly, and the sauce was fantastic. I was just really excited about the variety of flavors on one plate full of food. The vegetarian selection is a bit limited, and that's a bummer. There was also a weird interaction in which the owner told my friend that he shouldn't order what he wanted and told him to order something else instead. If you don't think people are going to like a dish, it probably shouldn't be on the menu.

Food was excellent! I am so happy I decided to try Indonesian cuisine. Presentation was wonderful, and the taste even better. I will be back!

Great 'healthy'lunch option, everything is fresh and delicious. Tons of vegan and vegetarian options and the staff is gracious and friendly! Perfect weekday lunch spot!

I came for the lunch buffet and the food was decent but they didn't refill any of the food so a lot of the pans were pretty empty and we only had the last scrapings to pick from. And it was only 12:30pm and the lunch buffet ends at 2pm. I wouldn't recommend going to the lunch buffet unless you go there right when the lunch buffet starts.

I went to Java Warung with my father on a limited time-span trip, and as we entered we were eerily surprised that no one else was dining. But alas we took our seat and were greeted by friendly wait staff. I enjoyed a delicious cup of coffee, had the Lumpia, more delicious, everything was delicious, the butternut squash soup was divine, spring rolls were offered for free as a side, and were perfect and included mango. I had the Urap Jawa, which included barbecued okra, lemon grass soup, tempeh and tempura all of which was just absolutely perfect. Highly recommended. GO tonight!

I have enjoyed my visits here but ordering is some what challenging never quite sure how large the portions are. Today going simple soup, satay and avocado salad. Servers are nice yet need to be more attentive.

This was my first experience with Indonesian and Malaysian cuisine. It was a nice experience. I was greeted by their waitstaff. She was friendly and helpful in considering some of her recommended menu items. I started off with the lumpia goreng...a deep fried spring roll with a sweet/zesty dipping sauce. The main entrée was Gule Kambing (cooked lamb in curry sauce). It was very flavorful. Not as spicy as I normally like things, so they brought me a couple of different pepper based pastes to try. They were both very good. The entrée came with a plate of sautéed vegetables and a few sliced small cucumbers. There was a Malaysian rice roll called "lontong". It reminded me of the Thai sticky rice that I'm familiar with. The other item was what I believe was an Indonesian pancake called "serabi". It was also very tasty. The overall meal was very good. For dessert I had "kolak". This is an Indonesian dessert consisting of yam, banana and tapioca pearls in a coconut milk base. It was served warm and reminded me of a similar Thai dessert dish only normally served cold. It was very good. My overall dining experience was very good and will be returning to try some of the other menu items. I will probably try the buffet some day to experience the variety..

My family and I have been here quite a few times for dinner and also the buffet. We love it every time! The owners are a very loving and sweet couple. We love dishes of SE Asia and were so surprised to find this in Appleton! The food is delicious, especially the Balinese Chicken!! Can't wait to go back again.

This place was a mixed bag. I went with my parents. They headed straight for the buffet, and came back with bowls filled with all manner of fried and stodgy looking stuff, and gave it mixed reviews at best. That's not how I roll, though. I ordered a lamb curry off the menu. It was fresh and tasty, and came with a side dish of stir-fried bean sprouts and bok choy that was also very good. The dining room is kind of low on atmosphere, but it's all right for a quick and cheap lunch. Just take the time to let them make you something fresh rather than diving into the buffet.

Finding Indonesian restaurants in the US are not an easy task, except for some big cities such as LA, NYC, or Philly. So, having an Indonesian restaurant in a city like Appleton WI is really great. JavaWarung is an Indonesian restaurant that will entertain almost everyone who is looking for something new. The foods are great, the pricea are affordable, and the selection are not bad. And the service is quite OK.

Love this place! This place is such a gem for Appleton and the Fox Valley area. Great food, great service. I have tried several dishes here and I have not been disappointed in any of them! My favorite is to go during the weekday and experience the buffet. She makes several different dishes that are made from scratch for you to try out. Warning get there at noon, because they can run low on favorite dishes. Although a quaint, not super fancy restaurant, it would be great for a date night or anytime someone is craving great ethnic/authentic food. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes authentic Asian cusine!

Decent Indonesian food. Sparse atmosphere, very basic service. Good selection of meat/veg, noodle/rice dishes. Open on Sundays, which a shocking number of restaurants in Appleton are not.

I have mixed feelings about this place. It is a gem in a way because it is a rare opportunity for authentic Asian food (that isn't Thai, Japanese, or Korean) in the area. My own food was great. My wife ordered the steamed fish, which was generally good, although it tasted smoked for some reason. The main problem with it was that they never cleaned the fish, so the guts were eventually exposed, creating an unpleasant smell. This suggests that with a little extra care and effort, this place could be better. That being said, I will definitely be back.
