Love this place! I get the rockfish burrito every time I come here! Outside patio has an amazing view of the sound and the mountains. Staff is super cool too. I highly recommend this place.
(5)CJ M.
no servers if you're sitting outside, placed order at bar, been sitting 45 min, still waiting on salad & entree. Maybe get 2 stars if the food is good.
(1)Kalib K.
One of my favorite restaurants in the local area. The staff is very knowledgeable about the menu and are always eager to help.
(4)Roger D.
The deck is great I had there wild salmon and it was over cooked. The service lacked they were some what busy but not overly did not seam to know the menu that well. The view from the deck was really good.

When ur slogan says "where the food and service are top notch" you should follow and keep to your word. I understand today was mothers day and the weather being almost 80 on a Sunday that they where busy, but I have never experienced such scattered unorganized service. We ended up spending more than 2hours there for our lunch because of the delayed time between us getting our server, drinks, appetizer and meal! We had felt forgotten and each time recieved one short of what we had asked for and had to keep asking for things like silverware and water.. I might give it another go, since the food was good but nothing special or outstanding. Though I am sure my appetite and attitude for food by the time we had recieved our meal was spoiled because it took way to long.

Went for lunch, food was good service was good, view was awesome. Nice and laid back atmosphere out on the balcony. Great view of the sound.
(4)Jim K.
Wow, great food, interesting tap choices. Service was friendly as well. The best sweet potatos fries I've ever had. A young kitchen staff, open kitchen and they were singing back there too. Happy cooks means good food! The outdoor seating is prime too! What a view in sleepy Steilacoom. Highly recommended and worth the drive.

Do actually sittinpromote him statin the restaurant now, and have been here by myself at a table for 34 minutes and have not been asked if I want anything to drink or eat. This is the third time coming here, and I only came back because of the view. The first time was wonderful experience the second the bartender was very sweet and talkative. But after waiting an hour and 48 minutes to sit down (I know why didnt we leave, remind you the bartender was awesome) the waitress didnt come with menus or water or anything for an additional 15 minutes. Now by this time the restaurant is settling down and she had more than enough time to get to us. Nothing!!!! Long story short it was awful food poor service. I couldn't believe the kind of people that work here. Horrible. The owner is very sweet, but needs severs that at least can drink to try the beers for recommendations and keep the 17 year olds at the host bus stations. Could be great but needs staff reviews. The host Danta should be a server. I have been watching Him and he pays more attention to the guest more thanThe waitress. ... promote him stat

We took our friends out last night . The restraunt is really nice and the view from the deck was great. The staff was really nice but the service was some what slow and the food was ok. I think when it gets busy it probably should be all hands on deck and everyone moving very quickly so food is served hot . I would like to try them again but not on Friday night and see.

I was excited about trying this place, as we are new to the area; however, we were turned away due to trivia night. I don't understand what they were thinking closing the entire restaurant to trivia night. You would make a lot more money by turning over tables, than having the same people sitting and snacking on french fries all night. I think we will try other places where our patronage is wanted. Not a good first impression!
(1)Jackson S.
I think this is a great restaurant for its size. I had the pulled pork sandwich and thought it was great. I highly recommend this establishment.
(5)Darcy K.
Top Side impressed us from the minute we walked in. We were greeted quickly upon entering although it was obviously a busy Father's Day afternoon. Ray, our fabulous server, was engaging and helpful. We ordered an interesting cross mix of food each of which was cooked to perfection. From the kids' buttered noodles and Fish n Chips to the Manila clams in butter/wine broth to the Top Side signature salad with fruit, pecans and a lovely dressing we will be back as soon as we're in the area. Thank for making our meal a hit for all ages.

Great Salads. The atmosphere reflects Steilacooms 60's feel. The Top Deck has a an excellent view of the Puget Sound. The service is quick and friendly.
(4)Bill S.
Great food and service! John(owner) bends over backwards to make sure you have everything you need. Dining on the deck in the summer is as good as it gets!
(5)Liz D.
I love, love, love the deck here at Top Side. I really love the fact you can eat out there year-round as well. Today it was a WA state beautiful 60 degrees. I was surprised to find we were the only people out enjoying the sun! The food was good, filling, and served promptly. The owner, John, was friendly and accommodating. This will be one of my favorite spring and summer locations :)

OOPS! What's going on here? Started out so great! We had terrible service...like the worst really. The bartender was our server and she clearly was more concerned with talking with a couple regulars at the bar than actually serving food or drinks. We had to ask a very nice girl who was sweeping etc to ask our server for another beer. It still took a good 10-15 minutes to get it as we watched her continue on with her conversation. The lack of service surely wasn't due to lack of staff as we counted 12 workers and maybe 20 guests tops. Unfortunately the beer was warm again, and the food was just yuck and close to uneatable. The last time we were here we saw people leaving tables with full plates and overheard complaints about the food, lack of service and overcharging. It appears there is a consistent problem that needs to be addressed or Topside will close soon too!! Sorry guys, but issues, issues, issues!!

I visited this awesome place twice while with the Army at Fort Lewis during the summer. The food was delicious. I had a burger that was very tasty and satisfying. Their alcohol pours were generous, and if you like beer they have micro brews from all over the area. What was really great was the view while sitting on their top deck patio. A beautiful view of the ocean in a nice homey little town. Unfortunately I was disappointed with the service. Although it was very friendly, it was extememley slow both times I visited. I think my friend and I were sitting at our table for almost 15 minutes before we were greeted or our drink orders were taken. It also took forever for the waitress to come back to see if we needed anything. I am an extremely generous tipper for proper and friendly service, but another one of my pet peeves (other than crappy pours on alcohol) is less than expected service. Other than that I recommend you try it if you are in the Fort Lewis area. Hopefully your service experience is better than mine.

This is so funny how all over the place the reviews are. We stopped here for a drink and appetizers after hiking south of Steilacoom and had a great experience. Awesome view like everyone says, decent beer selection, and my compatriots mixed drinks were good too. We got the baked avocado, and it was insanely good. I think we got some tacos too, but I can't really remember cause this was earlier in the summer. Parking is downright fucking annoying for a little town like Steilacoom. Just park on the street. Or park in the lot and just "forget" to pay like we did (with no consequences). I understand charging for parking in downtown Tacoma and most of Seattle, but this is fucking Steilacoom. End of side rant. This place was great, and we'll definitely be back!

Reviews for this place are all over the map. We were passing through and it was my turn to find a place for dinner. I saw this place yelp and thought "should I chance it?" Just to be safe, I asked our hotel for restaurant recommendations and they named Topside as a choice. I'm glad we found it. We got there just after 5:30 on a Tuesday and the restaurant was moderately filled. We asked to sit outside, the view of the sound is absolutely wonderful. I see some negative reviews about customer service. Our waitress was the opposite, she was attentive, cheerful, and was able to provide recommendations. Two of us had the salmon and the other in our group had the fish tacos. The fish tacos were promptly devoured with no complaints. They same can be said for the salmon; albeit, I thought the salmon was slightly over cooked (minus one star). A variety of brews to choose from was an added bonus. Price seemed reasonable.

Came here with my family for my birthday today and sat out on the deck. Amazing view of the Sound & Chambers Bay. We had great service and the food was delicious. Highly recommended the crab and artichoke appetizer! A lovely little local spot with great food.
(5)Jazmine L.
I am from the east coast so i have def. Been on the hunt for some good food. This by far has been the best at least that i have tried in my short time here at washington. We were seated right away the service was great. And the food was fingerlicking good. I had a pulled pork sandwhich and baked beans with fries. For the appetizer i had artichoke and crab dip served with sliced toasted bread. I will def be returning!!
(5)Brianna N.
We've driven by here plenty of times and always wanted to stop in and have lunch outside with the view, the ambience is great but we were so so disappointed in the food. We ordered nachos that came out with cold , cheap cheese and stale nachos. We were surprised that for the price of what we paid , you'd expect so much more. Fish tacos weren't too bad. I'm not one to leave negative reviews but I know that constructive criticism can help at times and the food leaves something to desire ..
(1)Kiyeon K.
Lovely place! The view is just remarkable. Breathtaking view of the ocean. The bar is upstairs too. We had the Crabby Patty (a sandwich w fried crab) along w fries. It was really good. Fries were just mediocre. We were doing wounds of Patron shots chilled w lime. Can't go wrong w these ever :) Definitely a place to eat & drink at in Steilacoom!!! Servers were so sweet & attentive as well :)
(5)Michael K.
The hotel recommended a bunch of restaurants and we viewed them on Yelp. Location made is select Top Side, but it is the attentive and friendly service and very tasty meal that will get us coming back. The drinks came out quickly and were refilled continuously. Appetizers were very tasty and the meals were cooked and presented well. The view is of course a tremendous asset, but not the only reason to come back!
(4)Nicole B.
Found this gem on yelp, and decided to make the drive from Puyallup to test it out, and I'm glad we did! We got there right at 11:00 on a Saturday morning. It's was a BEAUTIFUL day! Awesome view of the water, I could have sat there all day! Our waitress was great, very attentive and pleasant. I ordered the crab cake burger which was really good, and the fries are to die for! My husband order the Cobb salad, he liked his as well. Lots of beers on tap. Seems like a great place for happy hour on the deck. When we left the chef came out and thanked us for coming. Al in all a great experience. It's out of the way for us, but I would go again.
(4)Chris E.
My new favorite place when I come to Dupont... Great service, great view and pretty darn good food.
(4)Andrew M.
What an amazing view. Seriously, it's stunning. That alone gets a star. And that's where it ends. Horrendous food, terrible value, inattentive (yet simultaneously annoying) wait staff, disgusting bathrooms, and dirty cutlery/dishes make this place absolutely unbearable. My recommendation: go, have one beer and spend about two hours drinking it while enjoying the view and trying to drown out the incessant irritation from the wait staff and god awful smell from shitty crab cakes grilled in six month old reused cooking oil. Then, get the hell out and have a real meal somewhere else.
(1)Jon W.
Tip: don't eat here, just go for drinks. The view is amazing the food isn't. Although the owner is one stand up guy whose always so kind.
(3)Rachel S.
We LOVE Topside. It's a friendly pub with great atmosphere and takes regular pub food to the next level. The view on the deck is a bonus, but we like eating inside just as much. John the owner is always visible and making sure things are going well. We can always find a new beer on tap that we like, even though the good ones do tend to sell out now and then. The waitstaff is sometimes a bit too busy to be truly attentive, but they're friendly and very well-intentioned. Sure, sometimes there's a wait. Is that so surprising? Our favorites are the Topside Salad, the fish and chips, the crab artichoke dip, the nachos (huge portion, use as a whole meal or share it), the Black and Bleu Salad, and every single burger. The Topside Salad is awesome for when you want to eat out but also want something healthy. That salad is the only thing I don't need a box to take home half, though it's a generous portion. We can also recommend the South Sound Salad, the Crabby Patty, and the Mac and Cheese with crab: all delicious! Other things we love about it: it's kid friendly with a decent kid menu. It's a fun place to watch a game, and trivia night is fun too. Overall, this is a great place to go. Is it 100% perfect all the time? No, of course not. But for a local non-chain, it's awesome.

We have been here twice, the first time it was my family of four about 7 months ago, and the second time it was eight all together (4 adults, 4 kids) last week. I warned our guest that the food was not the greatest but the view is one of a kind. Top Side followed my expectation from the last time. The Good: - They have a great view of the Sound (to me this alone is worth it) - Good kids menu at good prices (about $5.50 a meal with drink included) - My kids did not like the pizza and were able to switch it out for burgers with no problem - Fast Seating, can accomadate large groups - Prices are decent for lunch ($10-15) The Bad: - Slow staff, not very attentive. (I never got a refill on my water) (Wife got the wrong type of cheese on her sandwich) - You will wait a long time for your food - Not the tastiest food so don't go with high expectations. - Limited free parking (some free streetside with pay-to-park lot in the back) I would come back again mainly to show off the view to guest but don't expect fast service or the best food in the land. I really hope they improve their quality as they have the potential to be a great restaurant.

If I could give no stars, I would! Went today to enjoy! We asked if we could sit on the patio. We were told by a very rude server that we could sit inside until we ordered our entree. After that we could not move outside. We went ahead and made drink selections. The waitress informed us that it could be awhile because she couldn't make the drinks. 17 minutes later we got our ice water and ask for our appetizer order. She stated they were out of clams. I ordered the goat cheese cheesecake, they were out of that, then they were out of avocado. Very disappointed with the service and food! Don't go! Complete waste of time!
(1)Shelag C.
The meal was amazing. The only was playing bar keep and was very concerned with customer satisfaction. Our appetizer was so good (crab and artichoke dip). Our meal was delicious. I had fish and chips and hubby had Mac and cheese. We both cleaned our plates. Can't wait to go back.

First off let's get the ridiculously awesome view out of the way , yes the view alone is worth the dining experience , but contrary to some of these reviews I've read ... so is the FOOD ! , we've eaten here at least a dozen times now in the last couple of months since we've moved , we even picked up lunch to go once , the crab cakes , the fish and chips , the rockfish burrito , I could list them all , bottom line if you want great relaxed atmosphere , great view and tasty eats then this is your spot , our family will definitely be returning to try the rest of the menu
(5)Nataliya C.
Very relaxed environment ! I got the the mushroom burger, it was average but good. Staff was very accommodating.
(5)Karen A.
We tried again last week after a bad experience a few months ago, sadly we will not be returning. About the only thing this restaurant has going for it is its location. We ordered 3 meals, waited over 30 mins for our food. She forgot my soup and I had to cancel it, then tried charging me for it. The Steilly sandwich was cold and burnt, the fact that she even served it to our table was sad. The fish and chips was burnt on the outside and soggy on the inside, this is standard fair and once again not sure how you could serve something so obviously over cooked. The Maui Maui tacos contained the tiniest pieces of fish I've ever seen and I was literally still hungry when we left. Our server didn't seem too concerned over the sad state of our dinner, and had to be prompted to take off the burnt sandwich and soup that never came. The manager couldn't even bother to come over and check on us.

WHAT I LOVED: Crab & Artichoke Dip - best I've ever had, period! I've been trying it across Washington for over a year now and I haven't found a better dip yet! I think they include blue cheese in theirs... Yum! Black and Bleu Steak Salad - My personal entree favorite, but sub the ranch dressing for blue cheese dressing Patio - Can somebody say, "Patio Heaven!!" It's almost like a little penthouse set up, being at the top of the building. The patio overlooks the water and the Steilacoom market. It's seriously perfect, even on an overcast day! Mom & Pop-like service - Great staff! Every time I come in they are so friendly, they know my mother and greet her as a regular. That extra warm feeling you get when the owner comes out to chat is priceless and definitely not overlooked. Atmosphere - last time I was in, there were two tables interacting and the man offered a taste of his beer to the lady at the other table. My mom and I jumped in the conversation laughing at their beer discussion, and then he offered us a taste of his beer too! I declined to try (regretfully), but I still thought it was so cool to see people interacting and discussing the menu items too! OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH: Well... To be honest, this place has pretty much nailed it every time I've gone. My only suggestions would be: The Black and Bleu Salad - Making an official "Top Side" steakhouse dressing for the salad and adding avocado to the salad mix. The steak also seems to be cooked in a cajun-like spice, which I don't know is entirely needed. The salad is DELISH on its own! I just feel like they could make it more traditional, and use an amazing dressing as the place to insert their unique flare or special touch! Happy Hour Food - They really should include their Crab & Artichoke Dip on the Happy Hour menu, and should also feature some Top Side unique "Sliders" at the $6 point of sale. Most restaurants I dine at have at least one of these two items on their Happy Hour menu, and Top Side is known for their burgers... Just a thought. Note: I pinpointed the $6 price point specifically, because Morton's Steakhouse in Downtown Seattle (which is considered upscale fine dining and usually has a higher price point) offers both of these items on their Happy Hour menu for $8. Additionally, Pearl Dining Bar & Restaurant in Bellevue, WA, which is around the same $$ price point as Top Side, is known for their $6 Happy Hour. Even if the portion sizes needed to be reduced slightly, I still think this would be a huge money-maker for them and a great way to draw the Steilacoom, Lakewood, University Place, and Dupont Happy Hour fans! Here's the link to the Top Side Happy Hour menu: topsidebarandgrill.com/?… FINAL THOUGHTS: Happy Hour changes or not, I'm still going back! I love this place and they definitely deserve the 5 stars.
(5)Brianna Z.
View was great and that is the sole reason the bar earned one star. We don't typically write such reviews but this was one restaurant we had to warn other about. The food was horrific to say the least, and we went to the Top Side with the expectation that we'd be having beer and bar food. The sweet potato fries were horrendous! Fried once, sat in the window, then re-fried and served. Absolutely gross. 1. Fish tacos... Looked like they came from a TV dinner meal, plated and served. No flavor even with the mango salsa. 2. Swiss mushroom burger: McDonalds burger topped with slimy grilled onions and mushrooms. 3. 7 seas beer = amazing. After being so displeased with our meal, we explained how unhappy and unpleasantly fried the food was, yet nothing was done to improve our experience as first time dinners. Not the cook, owner, manager came to consul, but left our sweet server to apologize and none of our bad experience was her fault! She was great. This is a sad story of a restaurant that could have great potential in a small town, but totally tanks.
(1)Bebot D.
I had clam chowder and Campbell clam chowder may taste better ! !! It took us a while to get our order And the crab cake sandwich is so so .
(1)Tobin T.
Great view, great food,, decent prices, good craft beer selection, friendly staff.. about a 45 min wait for a seat on the deck on a summer weeknight, but definitely worth it! Pretty good rotating craft beer selection too! Just expect a hike from your parking spot.. we had to park a few blocks away..
(5)Brian B.
Great atmosphere/view. Poor service, and really poor food. Good beer selection except for everything they were out of... Kinda sad they have a bunch of potential.
(2)John O.
Excellent service, great food with an awesome view of the sound. We had the Fish & Chips with a Caesar Salad and a cup of Chowder. Wonderfully prepared and delicious. One of our favorite places to eat in Steilacoom, Washington.
(5)Rob P.
Food was barf. Kids fish and chips was straight up burnt. Rockfish burrito tasted of putrid fish left out in the sun. Just awful. Deck was nice and beer was cold. Credit for that. Good service. Just don't eat.
(1)Megan E.
Food is horrible and overpriced. I ordered a Waldorf salad tonight - $14 and my chicken was clearly some sort of Oscar Meyer packaged chicken. It was gross. The only thing going for this place is the bar and the view.
(1)Sarah F.
Probably the best view in Pierce County....but.... Lots of room for improvement everywhere else. I want so badly for this place to figure it out and be successful. The view is to die for. The ambiance and crowd are always great. Service: while friendly, are sometimes not the most attentive staff and can be forgetful. Food: I was disappointed to see that they have raised their already HIGH PRICES recently. I'm not sure if this is for the upcoming US Open and they are hoping to profit off of all the rich golfer folks from out of town, but for Steilacoom, it's a bit too much. This is not some swanky fancy pants restaurant. It's a bar and grill. With a great view. But the prices are a little out of control. For example, the baked avocado used to be $8, and now it is $10. For an avocado (and a small one at that), a few garlic cloves and some Texas toast type of bread. Crab cakes for $12. And you get 2 cakes that are about the size of a sand dollar. Salads in the $14-$15 dollar range that are just average, and probably the worst $12 nachos I've ever had. I was here a few weeks back and we got our entrees before our nachos (our appetizer), and then when they came out it was a small plate of tortilla chips with shredded cheese on it - not melted - just shredded cheese. It was a joke. I will say - the herbal cheesecake is amazing. It is homemade by one of their wait staff and it is out of this world. Props to her. :) Drinks: Very weak pours. I actually have gotten so frustrated by this that I just order wine or beer now because I know there will actually be alcohol in it. When this place was "Jakes", it had a HUGE beer list (20+) to choose from. In the past year, there were times there were maybe 5 craft beers - maybe. A little sad. But, I did notice that the list has improved in recent weeks, but still not to the extent that it was. I really hope they make improvements with the food and prices because this place has the potential to be amazing.
(2)megan s.
Waited 15 minutes for service on a hot day. . Only to have to ask for water. .then order. ..then another 20 minutes go by and no drinks .. no waiter. Worst service. Slow for no reason as it wasn't even busy. Get one drink another 10 minutes later. Never going back.
(1)Matt W.
Foods not good enough to wait an hour just to be able to get a seat at the bar. The wait list for people going outside takes up all available space left in the bar area. Wouldn't recommend unless you have an hour to waste.
(2)Rick P.
Best BBQ chicken nachos i have ever had... An the service was amazing. The place may not be in the best part of town but the bar was clean and trendy..
(5)Cheryl S.
Owner seems like a nice guy and view is spectacular; unfortunately, the food is way below average and service is extremely slow. Burger tasted like it came from Costco. Owner might want to focus on training staff - seems like a really inexperienced crew. A lot of potential here...
(2)Kyrsten G.
The view was great but not great enough for us to go back. This is clearly a locals dive bar that lucked out with a great location. We got the chicken panini and the crab patty sandwich. The chicken has either been cooked frozen and then recooked or its some kind of mad scientist project meat. I've never had such a texture. Disgusting. The sweet potato fries were good. The crab patty sandwich tasted store bought and frozen and was mostly breading, hardly any crab. Nothing seems fresh or well prepared and the prices for what you're getting are ridiculous. Even the waitress was rushed over and told us they were out of pretty much everything. (On a Saturday evening!?) don't waste your money on the food! Maybe just a drink and the view and then go somewhere else.
(1)Reema S.
Overpriced!! They are definitely capitalizing on the view of the Sound so they skimp on quantity and quality. Breads given in appetizer were charred to the point of burned. I arrived there 5 min after happy hour ended and they wouldn't still agree to at least serve one of their items even though I offered to pay the non Happy Hour price. This was even after saying that I was vegetarian, so I had limited options anyway, and the Happy Hour appetizer would have given me an option! It's not like that item vanished in their kitchen just because happy hour was over. My boss won a raffle there once and inside was a box that had 4 wine glasses. One of them was a broken wine glass with lipstick marks on it. Come on, really??! Clearly they just recycled it out of their kitchen! I used to go there when it was called Jake's Bar and Bistro so I remember the food used to be good and fresher. Since the owner changed, I've gone there 5 times and everytime they're out of half of their beer selection, but they don't erase it off their chalkboard menu! My husband ordered a burger once and it took 25 min for the waitress to come back to our table just to say they were out of the patty, so he had to reorder a different dish well after everyone else at the table had already received their food. Another one of my co-workers ordered the fried oysters and it was just one giant goop out of the deep fryer instead of separated. The view is not going to be enough to keep people coming here! There's a lovely park down the street that I can have a picnic at and enjoy the food more!
(1)Jered M.
We went there on a Thursday evening three weeks before the US open was to arrive and it was very busy. We ordered an appetizer of crabcakes for $13 and received two. They were okay but for $13 is a little overpriced for two tiny crabcakes. I have the fish and chips and it was fairly good but a little soggy. My wife had the burger which was good but the fries were cold. It looks like from other reviews that this place is going down hill.
(2)Ryan K.
I have been here many timea and I must say it is always great! The staff are friendly, the food is delicious, and the views from the deck are amazing! They have a pretty good cocktail menu and a decent selection of beers both on tap and by the bottle. They do get busy fast so if you want to grab a seat on the deck either come early or be prepared to wait. If you're in Steilacoom it is worth a shot!
(5)CJ P.
Great pub with high-end grub! Comfortable seating, classy decor, great view of the sound, friendly and down to earth waitstaff. Our favorite visit on a Tuesday night to play some trivia, if we get the chance. I have tried about half the menu items and very few disappoint me, you can count on Topside for a quality and reliably good meal. I enjoy the rotating tap of beer selections, as well. I brought two of my coworkers here who have very different palates: one is a country boy from the Midwest and the other is an organic-foodie from cali. Both of them loved the atmosphere and thought their food was fantastic. This is a crowd pleaser if you want the bar experience without visiting a dive joint.
(5)Brad t.
People who do it right - make it look so easy. These folks got it down. If you are near here - try this spot for a sunset dinner. WOW.
(5)Erik F.
Great location, not great food. I've decided to no longer get takeout from Topside because I get home only to find issues with my order. Got clam linguini, only to find virtually no clams and zero sauce.
(3)Heather J.
We came here on the occasion my mother-in-law's 62nd birthday. There were 4 of us in our party when we arrived at 7pm on a Wednesday, and waited an hour to be seated outside. While we waited in the bar, we ordered the delicious baked avocado appetizer and drinks. The staff remained very cheery, friendly, and upbeat during our whole evening. We ordered the steak, Mahi tacos, and chicken. Although the appetizer was great, the entrees were terrible. The nice waitress asked us how our food was and each of us said that it was not very good. She apologized and said it was probably because the kitchen was so busy. Not offering any substitutes. We were happy that the drinks were still good and the ambiance was great. The chief complaints were that the potatoes tasted unwashed and dirty, the broccoli was not cooked, and meat was tough. The fries were cold and tacos had salmon instead of Mahi and looked like a child's dinner. The chicken tasted as though it sitting under a heat lamp for a lifetime and even looked that way. Because of the entrees, I am giving this 2 stars! Yuck! Come here for the drinks and appetizers only!

This is our second time coming to this resultant and I'm kind of stuck in the middle with my review. My first time I got the Rockfish burrito and it was amazing. Burrito had great flavor and was a big portion for 12 bucks. The service was great and were attentive to our needs. The second time which was today we started with the crab dip. The crab dip was so so the taste of blue cheese and cream cheese over powered the dish. We tasted little to know crab flavor. My wife ordered the chicken Cesar wrap and I ordered the Ruben with fries. My wife enjoyed her dish me the Ruben saved my meal. My fries were very cold and I only ate them because I was starving and didn't want to wait for another batch. My Ruben was delicious one of the best I've had. Very flavorful and stayed true to a classic Ruben. The atmosphere is amazing and service is great I may have come on a off day we definitely will give them another try!

The atmosphere is cozy inside and the staff very friendly. If you are willing to wait you can get on a list for the next opening for a table outside on the deck. I would rate it higher but my shrimp poor boy was poorly done. It basically was a cabbage salad sandwich with very few shrimp inside. When I asked about it I was told it was made that way so the sandwich was still profitable. I was not thrilled with the sandwich but expected a better response from my inquiry. I wasn't testy I just asked nicely why it had so few shrimp inside. I would rather pay more for a quality product than be shorted on the menu item. For what I paid it should have been better. I brought half home but will toss it because it is terrible. Wasted my money, but will choose a burger next time. If I should ever go again.

I rented their banquet room for a rehearsal dinner. Being the mother of the groom it was imperative that I put my best foot forward with the new in laws. Nikki and John put my mind to ease after our very first meeting. The room is beautiful, we had about 40 guests, the view is spectacular and the wait staff is efficient and friendly. Nikki and John helped plan a menu that was not only delicious (we did the pasta bar) but how and when to do the serving of the drinks main meal and dessert that would help the event flow. I ran into a problem with the dessert (brought in from an outside source) called Nikki and she took care of the problem for me. When we were decorating the room she stepped into help and was there throughout the entire event to make sure we had everything we needed. I would highly recommend this space for any event that you want to be a success.

Had a private party there. The owners are incredibly friendly and accommodating. The food was lovely, the prices were resonance. I would do it again in a second. Thank you!
(5)Jackson S.
This place has great food, great staff, and a great view! Will definitely come back soon.
(5)Clint N.
After some consideration this place is turning into a favorite of mine. I have not had a meal here that didn't surprise me with how delicious it tasted. The service is as personal as possible given the staff to customer ratio. The view is spectacular. I still stick to my guns about not coming here starving during a rush... But a solution to that one is to get an appetizer at a bar table while waiting for a table on the patio. Boom. Crisis averted.
(5)C B.
People are right the view here is amazing- but, unfortunately the outside was closed (even though it was bright and sunny out) because of the wind. Only had a beer and nachos (which were good). The food others were ordering looked delicious. We left and went and had lunch somewhere we could sit outside but, we will try again.
(3)Adrian S.
It's a pub with pub grub, and I'm a fan. First, Shelly the waitress was awesome. Friendly, fast, attentive. Having been a server in college, I never get it when I see servers with attitude. Do you not understand that tips will make or break your night? Anyway, I had the Rockside Burrito. A blackened rockfish with the expected ingredients. It was good. It was also hot. Not break-out-in-a-sweat hot, but it definitely had a kick. It came with a verde salsa and chips. Which of course necessitated cooling down with a couple of brews. It was a lot of food, but it was good. It was almost warm enough to sit on the deck. The view of the Olympics is incredible on a clear day.
(3)Jennifer R.
So impressed! We recently came across this gem when we were out exploring Steilacoom. We just moved here & was just checking things out since we live close & we saw it from down by the street. Well, we are dinner there. And my oh my! The service is incredible, the wine was perfect, our dinner was outstanding, the outside dining overlooking the Sound was even more impressive. This is our "go to place" love it!!
(5)Charlotte D.
I love the fact that they have have the beautiful deck with heaters that overlooks the Sound. The service was great and the food amazing! I had the Calimari Steak app and the T.B.A. and I'm obsessed!! They gave us plenty of time to enjoy our beers and the sunset, I definitely recommend! :)
(5)Richard H.
Nice little bar right by the Ferry terminal with a AWESOME view of the sound! The food and drinks here are ok, and service was pretty good, so would recommend this place!
(4)Hope S.
Definitely my boyfriend and I's favorite place to go. Great atmosphere and prices. The service is always just right- attentive but not overbearing. Plus they usually have a great selection of delicious new beer!
(5)Steve H.
Walked in and sat right at the bar tonight (Monday 7 pm) no waiting. Bartender took our drink order about 5 minutes after we sat down. Then our food order about 5 min later. Waited over 30 min for our food. Our order was sitting at the food station for about 15 when a waitress (that does not tend the bar) finally brought our burgers to us. We asked her if we could get new ones made because the food had been sitting there for so long. She took the food back to the kitchen. About 5 min later, we asked for the bill as we were done waiting. The bartender fumbled around trying to figure out our bill and then turned to us and said 5 dollars. He proceded to put the $5 in his pocket...not the till. We are guessing that he comped the 1 beer that was on our tab and proceeded to give himself a $5 tip (which he did not deserve). We did not get any apology...he just threw his hands up and said "I'm busy". I feel sorry for the owner as they don't know that at least one of their employees is skimming.
(1)Colleen V.
Love coming here when the deck is open! Service is great and drinks are stiff! They have a great beer selection also. The steilly cheese steak sandwich is always yummy.
(4)Scott P.
My last night in The area and decided to try the Topside...it was recommended by my B&B. The clam chowder was very good. The linguini with clams was also very good, but what stole the evening was the Cheesecake Dessert. It was light and very delicious...handmade in house by my waitress (Jaclyn). It was possibly the best cheesecake I have ever had. The wine selection was unique consisting primarily of upper northwest wines. There were also some European wines on the list and I had no problem finding a good one to accompany my meal. Atmosphere was casual and inviting. Service (wait staff and kitchen) was quick and courteous. All around this will be my first stop my next time I am in the SeaTac area.

Came here for drinks and snacks later on a Friday night. This is winter so the beautiful outside deck is close so the place is small this time of year and at 7pm on a Friday we had about a 20min wait. Absolutely worth it but plan on it. Started with an experimental drink called "oliver's twist." Photo's and menu attached. This was fun, refreshing and an interesting cocktail. I would order it again. I do have to admit the egg white in it did make me think twice about ordering. I am glad I got over it. They have a great selection of local spirits and if you are a martini lover as I am I would absolutely recommend the local Steilacoom vodka "Chambers Bay" with a twist. It is made from honey and is very nice. We stayed to the appetizer menu as we were just out for a drink and some conversation. Humas plate, Crab Cakes and the ploughmans platter were all great and we each got a bite. Everything is house made, fresh and well presented. We did have a little something sweat as well. It may sound strange but the deep fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich that comes dusted in powdered sugar and some additional jelly for dipping is REALLY REALLY worth the experiment, It was something super special. Great atmosphere, friendly fast service, nice food and good cocktails. If I had one critique it would be that sometimes it has an identity crisis. It does not know if it is a hip local bar or a hip local restaurant and the clientele looking for each is a little different. That being said we were seated at a restaurant table and had a nice time.
(4)Cassandra F.
Nice, cozy, warf restaurant with good food, a nice view, and very friendly staff. Will definitely go again. However, parking is a bit limited, so plan to walk. We parked on the street within 2 blocks.
(4)Natasha W.
This place is awesome! My husband and I wanted to go out to dinner and had driven by this place before so we thought we'd give it a try. We went on a Thursday evening and had a zero wait time. It was a gorgeous evening so we asked to be seated out on the balcony which was accompanied by a beautiful view of the water. When we ordered, we didn't have to wait long for our food which was great because we were starving. The food itself was magnificent. I ordered the Chicken Saltimbocca and my husband had the Top Sirloin. They were accompanied by these amazing potatoes and delicious asparagus. Both were divinely seasoned and we really couldn't have been more pleased by our entrées. If you're looking for a spot for a date night with your significant other I would definitely recommend this place. My husband and I will certainly be coming back!
(5)Krista U.
I've had the opportunity to dine at Topside a few times and unfortunately have been underwhelmed. The best two things this restaurant has going for it is the patio with gorgeous views of Puget Sound and the delicious crab dip. It doesn't get any better on a sunny day! Despite their success with seafood in the crab dip, I have been extremely disappointed in their salmon. The last time I ordered it (on a salad) my father ordered it as well. Mine was completely devoid of flavor and his was downright fishy. I didn't even finish mine. I've also been disappointed in the service, specifically on the patio (service inside was much better). The last time I was out there my party was ignore despite several servers working the sparsely populated deck.
(3)Naomi H.
The view is to die for, absolutely stunning. Apart from the view, it was a bit chaotic when we arrived. Took quite some time to be seated even though the restaurant was at around 30% capacity inside and 80% outside. They mentioned the delay was due to an extremely large party which we witnessed when we went outside to eat. They were kind about it and it was easily looked over. The food was incredible! We had the onion rings, clams and fish tacos. The clams were average, definitely not as many as I had hoped for $15 range. Found much larger quantity with similar quality at other local restaurants. Nothing to write home about. That being said, I have to say the fish tacos were stunning. The waitress requested we try it with a chipotle sauce which was the finishing touch. She was such a great waitress and so kind. Absolutely hope to get her again for future visits. Everything was prepared and brought to us in record time, shockingly quick food service. Can't wait to take my husband here to enjoy the views. Perfect ending to a day of crabbing.
(5)Jayson Y.
The view is something to behold. Had a bit of a wait on a Thursday late afternoon but managed to make ends meet by drinking some of their rotating beer selection. The staff was friendly and always gave us updates as to when our table would be ready outside. We ordered burgers and they were adequate. Overall we would go back and try something different.
(3)Lacy R.
Terrible service. Waited for beers for 10 minutes and were told we had a seat outside on the patio...5 min later they told us we werent going to get seated outside and the kitchen was closing in 30 min. So we wasted the rest of the daylight hours for an outdoor seat we didn't get and then were told we had to order. Lost our business.
(1)Emily R.
As a visitor to Seattle, my friends took me here for happy hour. I'd like to say the server, Kellia, was just fantastic. I originally ordered a pumpkin cider beer but Kellia was nice enough to offer me a sample because she thought I wouldn't like it. She guessed right! That's just great customer service.
(5)Jacklyn W.
I have been here a few times and absolutely loved it. First time I had the Black and Bleu Steak Salad, then Calamari Steak Strips, and today had a Pulled Pork Sandwich. Each time the drinks and food has been top notch and the casual feel of the restaurant is nice. Today my husband and I sat on the deck overlooking the water in the 80 degree weather, it felt like we were on vacation. It's so close to my house and the prices are very decent so it is definitely my go-to lunch and dinner place.
(5)Richelle H.
Beautiful view overlooking the water! Fish tacos were okay. We ordered a side order of sweet potato fries and they were the most amazing fries I have ever eaten! I'll come back just for the fries and the view.
(4)Catie F.
The short of it: Meh. I won't be back. Awesome location with lots of well thought touches (outdoor heaters and blankets on the deck!). The inside looked nice, though we just walked through on our way in and out. We came for dinner because my boyfriend has been for lunch several times and has always had awesome food. But man, it was SO disappointing! First off, the chalkboard beer menu made it appear that they had a decent selection but when we tried to order we were told all they had were cider, one microbrew, and bud light. "Lucky" for him it turned out they did have the one he wanted, but it was clearly the stale bottom leftovers out of the keg, not good. The food came and it was also pretty underwhelming. The artichoke dip was different than what he had before, okay but not great. My salmon burger was a dried out fillet stuck on a bun with a little squirt of tarter sauce. His burger was okay. Salad was meh. It's too bad, an awesome place is not awesome if the food and beer suck.
(3)Lucas R.
I wish everyone had an aoli or two like this place! Awesome deck upstairs overlooking a few historical blocks (think houses and churches 150 years old), Great local beer selection with a variety for everyones tastes, good variety of fish, burgers, sandwiches, and veggie options. They also have a dessert menu worth saving room for. I think my favorites so far are the black and blue salad and the rockfish burrito. They also have a nice conference/banquet room, which I think we are going to try for a work meeting lunch in the Fall
(4)Michael K.
Two guys and a girl sit at Johnny's Dock having just finished a steak, scrambled eggs, hash browns, smoked salmon eggs benedict, and several alcoholic drinks... the time is 1:30 PM. "So... what should we do now?" "I think we should drive all the way to Steilacoom to eat and drink more!" "I hate you." 25 minutes later the trio settles in at the bar and orders... 2 glasses of 12 year bourbon 1 apple cider with a shot of vanilla vodka 3 of the girliest cocktails every conceived (deliciously ridiculous) 1 pound of steamer clams made in the most heavenly mixture of butter and Blue Moon 1 order of awesomely fantastic steak cut fried calamari Indulgence, thy name is Saturday. As a throw-back, the first time I visited this bar was during the summer when they have serve proscuitto wrapped jumbo prawns with skewerd cherry tomatos and fresh mozzarella... pretty much amazeballz. Huge fan - and I get a little huger each time I go...
(5)Jill S.
The deep fried PB&J Sandwich is to die for! I also like their Chicken Caesar Salad. Everyone who I have been with at Topside has enjoyed their meals. It's a little on the spendy side, but not too bad. I would recommend this place for lunch or dinner. They have an outdoor eating area with a good view of the water too!
(4)Randell A.
I love the outdoor atmosphere of the place especially during the summer. On a clear day the view is beautiful and then sunsets are awesome! The burger I had was very good, cooked the way I wanted it and the fries wee good as well. The have any various local beers available.
(4)Kristy P.
This best thing about this place is their location and their deck with their amazing view. It's a great spot on a sunny day. The food is good, drinks good. Really no complaints at all. They also do to go orders, called in orders a couple times and service was good.
(4)Jeremy M.
I want to like Topside, but without the deck it is just a sub-par restaurant. The menu is pretty sparse and a little expensive for what you get. My wife got a burger that was super dry and weird tasting. I ordered the fish and chips and was told they are out of them. This is the third time this has happened to me. This place has so much potential, is super clean, and the staff is pretty nice (tonight waitress was average and a little slow, but usually they are great). I keep coming back because I'm a local and want it to be good, but I am consistently dissapointed. Please get better. You have so much potential..
(2)Eric L.
Delicious menu, courteous staff, and an unbeatable outdoor view. If you have yet to visit Top Side, definitely do yourself a favor and come on a clear day - the already-tasty food gets a substantial boost from the restaurant's roof-seating-view of Puget Sound!
(5)Tornadoroo K.
Love it! The view is incredible. Of course the day was sunny and the air crystal clear. The Olympics were covered in Snow. The food. We had the Prime Rib Sandwich special. Served on a toasted Hoagie with with fries it was large enough to please my husband and I called for a take home box. Didn't need it. My hubby liked it so much he ate my left over half. He of course poured the blue cheese and horse radish sauce on his. The prime rib was the whole slice, about 1/4 inch thick (perfect for a sandwich) and came cooked med/med well. I, having saved room for desert, ordered the Creme brulee. It was excellent. very creamy with a nice amount of browned sugar on top. The goods: They have a limited, but excellent menu. Not really a kids place and no special kids menu. Nice selection of specialty burgers and they are all currently $8 (with fries) on Mondays. The Salmon burger is the only one left out. Otherwise, expect to pay up to $13. Try the Tillamook Cheddar and Bacon burger. The wine and beer selection is very good. They rotate the Tap Selection, so its a great place to try new brews. The wait staff is friendly and very efficient. Some of the best we've run into. The menu prices are good/excellent for the food. We expected to pay more. For the two specials, two drinks (soft) and dessert we paid $42. I'll try to keep the cost updated on return trips. Definitely a top five restaurant for Stilacoom/Lakewood.
(5)Jeanene H.
Came on a beautiful Friday night. Date night with the hubby for dinner. Sat outside and enjoyed the view. I ordered an appletini, which was gross! So much syrup! Ordered the ahi tuna and it was over done, pink in the middle and not red like it should. Very disappointed.
(2)Danielle B.
I really like Topside for light dinners and happy hours with the girls. This place is perfect rain or shine for a dining experience with a view of the sound (and Olympic Peninsula if you're lucky!!!). They have pretty timely service, though some days the staff seem to be a little slow in the bar if the deck is open. I love the food since their menu can accommodate most cravings. Perfect for a first date or date night or to catch the game. It's cozy much like the town it resides in.
(4)Grace A.
Hhhhnnngg. Top Side. Why are you so far away, and where have you been? Bartender made us sweet custom drinks, and we tasted some of that infusing vodka behind the bar. Everything was perfect. I had the clams, made with Blue Moon hefeweizen. Perfect sauce. Perfectly done clams. Super chill staff, super beautiful view. Aside from being out in the boonie boon boons, what's not to like?
(5)Lory K.
Friendly, accommodating staff, great food, great view. Accommodated my wife's food sensitivities with a smile. Yum! We will be back. Don't miss eating here.
(5)Emily E.
I am definitely a fan of this place and have been for years (under previous name/management/not sure what happened to Jake's). The location is great as it is tucked away in Steilacoom, so it's more of an intimate atmosphere of somewhat regulars and less frequent diners. Of course, you cannot and will not beat the view on a clear day either. The vibe is cozy and clean and for the smaller venue it always seems to still have seating when I walk in... expect reservation are suggested for Trivia Night on Tuesday at 7pm. Trivia Night is a good time as well, as there is good range of categories for everyone to partake in. Now on to the real reason we are here, food and bev. I think it is pretty decent, never have had a complaint and have been there enough times to work my way around the menu. I always can depend on the Black and Blue Steak Salad to deliver. It is the only salad that can't be halved though, sadly... sometimes I just want a little! Even when stake it involved. I've enjoyed the West Coast Burger with the to die for sweet potato fries, and the risotto I had with the Wild Pacific Salmon was delicious. Beer selection is very good and variety of wine (local WA choices too!) are on tap to complete any meal. Staff is attentive and friendly... always a pleasure.
(4)bebe j.
Came here with a friend to gab and grub. Waitress was super sweet and friendly. Great beer menu, wine okay. We ordered fish and chips and onion rings. Everything was greasy and just tasted like oil. I took all the breading off the fish and dipped the fish (which was moist but unseasoned) in the tartar sauce, which WAS tasty. Sweet potato fries were soggy, coleslaw was watery. Meh. Not worth the $40 bill.
(2)Chris D.
Crab artichoke dip was very tasty. The burger was large, juicy and flavorful. The service was pretty bad though. It took over 30 min to get our food.
(4)Ben T.
I had a sandwich that really didnt stand out but the salads looked amazing. My wife had one and that is the way to go! You cannot ask for a better view and a fun atmosphere makes for one of the better restaurants in the area. Next time we are coming back for trivia!
(4)Arun R.
Nice place. Good food. And a TV in each corner for football. ... score. Had a TBA.. Turkey, bourbon bacon. . Not enough to make me drunk, on bruschetta bread. ..but the avocado was missing. Reasonably priced. Will have to try it in the summer when the sun is out and can sit outside. Will have a nice view of the water and Olympics then.
(4)Beth B.
Location is the ONLY thing going for this place. This is the third time I've been here and it continues to disappoint. The servers are rude and disrespectful. The food is awful and way too expensive. I ordered the ravioli and it was clearly frozen. There were possibly 8 ravioli and it cost $16- $2 per frozen ravioli. It SUCKED. Plus I had an $11 cocktail that tasted awful. SAD SAD SAD! So frustrating.
(1)Burke L.
As a local I gave Topside 5 stars because it beats anything nearby hands down. Nowhere else has a deck like this one, no one has the rotating taps like here and no one has John for an owner. We are charter customers and used to come here when it was called Jake's. After sitting empty for months John took it over, remade the inside, hired new staff, changed the menu and made it a much friendlier, welcoming place. For this area Topside is a unique experience. Give it a try and I think that you'll agree.
(5)Jason A.
Great food but don't bother if you have less than 1.5 hours for lunch. They simply cannot do it because the service is agonizingly slow.
(2)Jim S.
Good food but slow service and it's a Monday night :( We really liked the atmosphere, and will go again to see if the slow service is a real issue or if we picked a bad night to go.
(4)Michael S.
As Topside, I have never had a good dining experience. Food is horrible, service is worse. At least when it was Jake's, they had a nice selection of beer. And the view? Yeah its great, but I have the same view from my deck. If you're in Steilacoom and looking for a good dining experience, try Le Creme Brulee. Then walk to Pioneer Park for the view.
(1)Christina B.
It's all about the view on their deck. On a sunny day, it's gorgeous. My boyfriend and I stopped by for dinner as the sun was going down, and it was so beautiful. Besides that, though, the service is slow and the food and drinks are mediocre. I had checked out their menu on their website and was excited about the cocktails they had listed, especially the Blue Norther and Sunnyside ( topsidebarandgrill.com/?… ). Well, when we arrived and were given a drink menu, there was one (maybe two) of the drinks on the menu that reflected the drinks that were listed on their website, and I was disappointed. Please update the menus on your website to reflect what's actually being served. Further, the cocktail was weak. The servers are friendly and they have a nice variety of food on their menu. Steilacoom is a small town, so there were a lot of people there who seemed to know each other. It was amusing to listen to conversations as people were running into old friends. If the weather permits, sit outside. It's really peaceful. The bar area inside is very noisy.

Finally got the opportunity to visit this establishment BUT it is now a gem of the former place called Jake's. I have heard of this place many times from the Hubby and his boys, as this what a frequented local bar for them. Walking in, my Husband was very impressed on the updates and addition, the main thing being that the deck was open and is always open, which was an issue with the previous owner. My first time was just for a night cap, so we didn't get the full effect as they were near closing but of course, let us linger and even get a second round. I was super excited about this place and couldn't wait to get the full experience, which we did, a couple weeks later. First 70 degree day and we were in the area and hungry so we stopped by for lunch!!! The deck was in full affect but it was a little much for us so we sat inside. John the owner was there of course and our friend Hal was helping in the kitchen!!!! I ordered the Fajita burger, YUM, Hubby had the House burger I think it was called? It had the works, blue cheese etc, and he devoured the thing!!! The sweet potato fries are AH MAZING!!!! Full bar, good size wine selection and lots on tap:) Yay for Top Side!!!!!
(4)Eric C.
First time here... Good beer and excellent Mac and cheese. We had the black and blue steak and it was a wreck. The steak was good but the order and delivery was a mess. The steak was delivered very rare..and we asked for it to be cooked longer. We got the steak back the same. By the time we got steak sauce, the steak was cold and bloody. This place must not move many steaks... I would like to try this place again soon but will stick to a burger and a beer.
(3)Robert S.
The best thing - the view. The owner knew what he/she was doing when this placed was built. You have an amazing view of the Puget Sound. Location - it's easy to find, but the city itself is a little bit off the freeway (I-5) so it's takes a minute to get there. Service - the servers are generally younger so they can get flustered easily, so I would rate this average. Food - sometimes a little greasy, but there are solid portions, so once again - average. Price - the three $'s is correct. Overall, this is a great place to go. They have good specials during the week (and Trivia on Tuesdays). If you have a significant other, it's a perfect relaxed date spot-shorts and t-shirt, but romantic on the deck.

After a long hard grueling day at work we decided to venture our way out of Dupont and head down to a town called Steilacoom. After traversing the country side, and driving through the blackened forests we came upon a place named Topside Bar & Grill. We parked the horseless carriage off the side of the road and meandered to the establishment. We hiked up the long flight of stairs and requested a table for a few. My innards were churning of hunger, it was unsettling to say the least. However, the Order Procurement Specialist was quick on the draw, and before we knew it we had our beverages in front of our noses. We opted to start our feasting gala with an order of Fresh Steamer Clams and also Calamari Steak Strips. This would be the first time I have had Clams made in a Hefeweizen broth and lets say these baby's danced on my tongue and slid down smoothly! They were superb! The Calamari Steak Strips were the size of most Mozzarella sticks, and they came out with a chipotle aioli and another spiced sauce. The calamari tantalized my taste-buds and we almost had to duke it out for the last one! I ordered the Wild Pacific Salmon and a Side Caesar Salad. The salad was very well organized and it came with a quarter of a lemon to squeeze the flavorful juice all over the salad. Seems how I lost the battle for the last Calamari, I made sure to squeeze the lemon in such a way that it squirted into the eye of the Calamari victor! I call that a victory for me! The Salmon came out shortly after, I was already feeling the level of food and did not think I would be able to finish the dinner. The salmon was excellent, it was flaky and good, there was a small kick of spice to this swimmer of yore, it made a small bite in my mouth and was deemed excellent. They served it with a side of broccolini which was not bad, however it was not great. But I will not complain, as I ate it all! After this wonderful meal, my eyes we glazed as I was in a food coma, and our Check Bringer had the audacity to ask us if we cared for Dessert! I might have grunted or groaned, but she got the hint, there will be NO dessert for me! I believe when I am back in this area again, I will have to visit this establishment again. Let us hope that there isn't any rain to dampen the soles of my shoes, as I do not like to squeak when I walk.
(4)Raquel T.
food 2.5, view 5 enjoyed an early dinner and warm weather on the deck.. ordered: -bbq pulled pork w sweet potato fries -west coast burger w fries -fish and chips everything was fine but i wouldnt come back for the food.. the view is pretty amazing though
(3)Michelle M.
Gotta love Steilacoom! Great little town with big views and nice people. Topside grill has a wonderful rooftop deck (I haven't sat inside yet) and some great local beer choices. I think the menu is overpriced by $1-2 on the majority of the items but they don't dissappoint. My favorites so far have been the fish and chips and the mussels. Our waitress was kind enough to bring us a small portion of frites to munch on before she brought out the huge mound of hot and fresh ones to go with the mussels. Treat yourself and make it a sunset date night at Top Side :)
(4)Kelly S.
This place has the most god awful service. If you are waiting to be sat outside, they will not let you order your food. You can only order drinks and appetizers. It's absolutely ridiculous.
(1)Ronnie E.
Just found my new favorite joint in Washington. This was my first visit on a holiday around 5pm, not to take anything away from the service. To start, the service. Impeccable. My beer never went empty. Didn't wait long for my food or bill at the end. It was like I had my own personal server. The food. I ordered the fish and chips and calamari. I just bashed Ruth's Chris for serving up some horrid calamari but Top Side just totally redeemed my view of the Pacific Northwest and its calamari by serving up the best calamari I've had in a long while. The calamari was served in deep-fried breaded steak strips stacked up on two ends of a rectangular plate, garnished with a lemon wedge, lettuce leaf, and two drizzles of sriracha for color on the plate. The calamari was fried to a an even golden brown and I'm still thinking about each bite. The fish and chips. I'm assuming it was cod but each bundle of fried fish was cooked to an airy flakiness that I haven't experienced anywhere else... not even in San Francisco, New York, or any other port city in the U.S. that you would expect good foods. I had the option to get sweet potato fries but I went with regular fries. Even the fries were awesome! I really wish I was a better writer to describe how good the food, service, and the overall bar was. They have a nice view of the water and there was an outside patio with heaters. I'll definitely come back but I'll try to avoid the normally busy times for bars. I don't want my experience to be downgraded. If I have another experience like today, I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade to 5 stars!

Food over priced and awful is the best way to describe the food. Sent back riblet's waitress returned to let us know that they could and would not remake them. WILL NEVER GO BACK!!!!!

I've been to this restaurant twice but have yet to eat there. Here's the deal: Last December I talked my family into driving all the way to Steilacoom to try the Top Side only to find a note on the door saying that the restaurant was closed for a staff party. 'Kay. I tried again this summer, a beautiful, sunny Sunday in July, and again was shot down. When we walked in at about 2 p.m. and asked about a table on the deck (the whole point of going here I think) the hostess gave me a semi-coherent explanation that they were understaffed, hadn't expected it to be so busy (on a SUNNY SUNDAY when you have OUTDOOR VIEW seating...) and they "weren't really" seating people but she'd put our name on the list... She and two servers then sat down to fold napkins. Seriously. And I noticed that there was one young guy in the kitchen and no food on any of the tables. While we went back outside to wait for friends and reconsider a sign was taped to the door saying that the Top Side would be closing at 4:00 due to a 'family emergency'. I think it probably should have read, "due to 'a really good party that the young staff all wanted to go to and the manager is out of town'... Or something like that. Great location and I hear the food is good but I won't be subjecting myself to the disappointment again.

Oh where to begin... When we came in, it was trivia night. Great, except it was July 3rd and there were a lot of people in town looking for a place to have dinner. So the only seating available without waiting an hour was outside. Which was great until the sun went down and we all froze because the heaters on the patio didn't put out any heat or were broken. The owner admitted that the ones that were working, ended up only being for looks and really didn't put our any heat-Dude, you have a restaurant on the Puget Sound, get some heaters. We were told by a table near us that they had waited over an hour for their food, which came out cold, and were then blown off by the owner and told that they were served promptly. He offered nothing to get them to come back. After an hour of sitting outside, we asked to be moved inside because trivia had ended. Our server (the owner) simply disappeared. We were told later he had gone home. We were given to another server, who couldn't seem to remember we existed. She never brought drink refills, even when asked. We had to find her and ask for the check, which she also forgot to bring. We complained to the person who seemed to be in charge and he did apologize, but offered nothing to rectify the situation. I heard a lot of people complaining about the service here and I think they figure you don't have any other options in this small community. Well, 10 minutes up the road is The Ram, Applebees, Red Robin and a lot of other nice places. Granted, they won't have the Puget Sound view, but are you willing to pay for that with bad service and mediocre food?

Geez I am extremely behind on reviews so let me crank a few out while watching two NFL Preseason games! Go Tebow and RGIII My wife and I had a hankering for a burger and after a quick Yelp search, we decided on Top Side Bar & Grill. We walked in around 6ish and was immediately shown to the outside deck, which from what we were told, was newly built. The weather was pleasant with the usual gray skies and cool breeze. Shortly after being seated the sky opened up to a few rain sprinkles but the quick-thinking waiter offered umbrellas to everyone on the deck. We accepted but as soon as the umbrella was installed and raised, the rain stopped. We both ordered angus bacon burgers with Tillamook cheese and the usual trimmings of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles. I ordered fries, and my wife ordered sweet potatoes fries as a healthier alternative...show off! :-) The burgers were delicious, and the service was outstanding. Not really sure what else they have on the menu because we knew going in that we wanted a big, fat, juicy, burger!

Delicious! I had fish n chips and a few local brews and have no complaints. My only reason to give it a 4 was that it was a bit pricy and the service was slow because they were busy but it was worth it over all.

We came here last friday to soak up some of the last bits of sunshine and were completely impressed! They have an awesome patio, with an amazing view of the sound. The service was great, the drinks we awesome. The food was good and the sweet potato french fries were the bomb diggity! They also informed us that during the cooler and down right cold months, they button up the patio with glass, so you can still enjoy the view! Sounds great to me! Missing star? Some signage on the street level would have been nice, getting in is a little bit of a maze!

The view is amazing and eating outside while overlooking the sound is a great experience. As for the restaurant, they seem hit and miss with the quality of their food. I have been here twice and both times a couple of the meals were great and a couple of the meals were ok. If they get their quality of food to a consistent level, this will be a very good restaurant.

We have been regular customers of Topside, formerly Jake's since we started our business down here in Spring of 2009. We really enjoyed Jake's and wish him well. John at Topside runs a very good restaurant, and takes enormous pride in his work. We also use the banquet facility on the lower floor and find it fantastic for hosting events that are 30-90 people. The patio of the restaurant is surprisingly good, as a simple two stories up, reveals incredible views of the South Sound. You can see the mountains, water, all the islands, chambers bay golf course and the narrows bridge. The food is incredibly good, and shows the pride of the staff and ownership. What you might find really surprising are the soups. Each one is hand crafted and made with premium ingredients. The clam chowder is the best I have ever had, and the daily soups are normally so good that even if I normally don't like a type of soup, I'll try it anyways. After growing up on canned soup, I realized I missed out on one of life's great pleasures... French fries.... we all love them right? These are high quality potatoes, with a high priced/quality oil. You can't beat the fries of The Topside.... Whether it was Jake's or The Topside, a complaint from time to time has been service. Folks should realize that when the weather is good, people FLOCK to the place. The extra wait time is worth it, considering the view and the food quality. We are proud supporters! -Magnus Brandfors, President of Steilacoom Investments

We went with friends last night. It has a nice decor and was not too busy. Our server was awesome and she was on the spot. Unfortunately, we had three different starters and the mushrooms and onion rings must have come strait from the cheap part of the freezer section of the supermarket. The burgers were good and since this is the fourth time we have eaten there, we haven't seen much greatness in this cute place. The view can be killer, but it's too chilly to go outside on the deck. The beers are wonderful!

I absolutely love this place. The food is always really good and there is an excellent selection of local micro brews on tap. It also has a good neighborhood atmosphere, where if you sit in the bar area the people around you will chat to you. I have to say the reviews that mention slow service or wait time also mention that it's a summer day and they're eating on the deck. Of course on a beautiful summer day in Washington you're going to have to wait to eat on a deck over the sound and the business is going to be busy. The staff are always friendly, I've only ever had great service there.

Amazing view, decent food, horrible service. We sat down on the deck and waited for 10 minutes to even be acknowledged. A glass of water would have been nice, but I had to resort to going inside to the bar and getting it myself. The drinks we eventually ordered took just as long and the IPA was luke warm. The mixed drink someone in my party had was weak and she was told that they could remake it, but it probably wouldn't get any better. Seriously? Our checks were not accurate either, with extra items we didn't order on them. Some people at a table behind us got tired of waiting and walked out. There seem to be a lot of good reviews here, so I'm not sure what happened when we went. I don't think that I will be going back if I can help it.

my husband and I love eating here. the food is a little pricey, but if it's nice out and you get an outside seat - oh it can't be beat! such a beautiful view. the service is pretty good and the food is great.

I went to Top Side for the first time a few months ago, and have been back several times since! The food and service are outstanding and I would highly recommend it to everyone!

Great fish & chips. The Topside Amber Ale was a great addition to the meal. The owner stopped by to inquire how we were doing - nice atmosphere.

I went here recently with some coworkers for after work drinks and dinner. I will start by saying that the place is nice, with a nice view to boot. They have a deck that overlooks the Sound and when you add some sun and blue sky it is fantastic. The beer selection is top notch, a lot of local microbrews and a few domestic offerings for people with no taste. For food I had the fish and chips, really good and a nice sized portion. The breading wasn't too thick or greasy, just the way I like it. Another plus was the service, attentive without being over the top. If you are looking for a place to get some good food and drink at a reasonable price you should check this place out. I have a feeling I'll be back soon.

We had lunch here and had great service - everyone was very friendly and accommodating of our special requests. The view from the patio was beautiful.

Lunch on July 14th. Boy, am I badly behind on completing reviews! The food was very good, the service prompt and attentive and the prices reasonable. This has been our experience every time we've eaten here, before and after a recent change of ownership.
(4)Sonia S.
The view is nice, the menu has some yummy sounding drinks...mojitos not that good. They were having a ticket only event on their deck...if we would have been able to sit out there and enjoy a meal and a few drinks, possibly a higher rating. Will check it out again.

The Top Side Bar & Grill is Steilacoom's newest restaurant. It opened to the public on Friday, March 23rd, and shortly after opening it was standing room only. Owner and manager, John O'Reilly, gave a heartfelt welcoming speech to the customers and staff on opening night and those present responded with much applause. Patrons ooh'd and ahh'd as plates of hot appetizers and entrees were delivered to nearby tables. Amazingly, for an opening night, the kitchen crew did a fantastic job of keeping up with the orders all night from the packed house. My party enjoyed several appetizers, such as mussels steamed in mixture of herbs and German hefeweisen, and nicely proportioned entrees, such as steak tenderloin. We couldn't find a single thing to criticize about the food, drinks, or service, which attests to the strong experience and thorough preparation of the owner and his staff. Lisa, the bar manager, was kept busy making creative and tasty concoctions such as her signature Lavendar Martini. My wife, who usually imbibes a single drink per night, couldn't resist and had two of Lisa's Lavender Martinis over the course of the night. The Top Side Bar & Grill also has 17 beers on tap and a number of wines available by the glass. We paid a second visit to the Top Side Bar & Grill tonight. Being Sunday evening, we got there just as they opened the kitchen for dinner at 6 PM. A pre-dinner cocktail for me was a very smooth Martini made with Ebb & Flow Gin, which is made in Seattle by Sound Spirits. And never one to mess with a proven winner, my wife ordered another Lavendar Martini. Having had a late lunch, we decided to split a large order of fish & chips which consisted of five thick cuts of perfectly fried cod, crisp seasoned fries ("chips"), and the dipping sauces were home made. The IPA microbrew was a perfect accompaniment. For dessert, we had a delicious multi-layered slice of chocolate cake. The service on our second visit to the Top Side Bar & Grill was equally friendly and attentive. We can't wait to visit the Top Side again. Please visit the Top Side's Facebook page for photos. facebook.com/TopsideBarA…

I'm conflicted about coming back, my salmon was so salty I had to send it back. But when I got it back it was perfect and a delicious! My husbands fish and chips were not memorable. And don't order the creme brule, it was a disaster, almost inedible.

Family in town from New England and decided to take them on a fab NW day in July! I have been to the Top Side about 3 years ago and it was great! This time, service, food and staff was lacking. We ordered nachos of all things and the oven wasn't working so couldn't order them. They were out of IPA too! All on a Saturday afternoon? Prime location, just saying, this place needs a visit from restaurant Impossible.

Great food, service, and atmosphere. The owner and management at very personable and hard workers. Elevator access and garage parking available.
(5)Heather D.
The atmosphere on a Sunday afternoon was nice. It wasn't too crowded and the waitstaff were attentive. The restaurant itself is very clean and the bathrooms aren't gross. I had the west coast burger with fries and a diet coke. The burger was OK but it was a bit dry. It would have been better if there was more sauce on it perhaps? They offer a boca patty substitute for the meat patties but I would suggest that they make homemade black bean patties with a good aioli sauce. I'd go back though and try something else, it's a cool place with a decent beer selection.

SO, SO, SOOOOO excited that they are open! John from the old Jake's is the new owner & the small but strategic changes/updates were brilliant. The turkey bacon pesto sandwich is to die for! They've got a frier now for fries & fish & chips. The fries are very good & I'm not a fry girl. Looking forward to a great summer enjoying Top Side Bar & Grill!
