We usually meet the kids on Mother's day somewhere around Olympia and this year we choose El Sarape in Olympia. We meet early to both avoid the dinner rush and allow all of us time to get back to our homes. The overall restaurant is OK and the food was good but the service was nonexistence. We were there at 3:00 (yes it was Mother's day but the restaurant was over 1/2 empty) and it took 1 hour to get our food (there were 11 of us). No apologies, explanations or any effort to compensate. Later - as everyone was leaving - I finally asked what happened. Apparently one of the cooks didn't show up. I understand that can happen (what a day to choose) but couldn't the staff have let us know. That is the difference between customer service and just doing your job.

Went at dinner time, was surprisingly busy for how bad the food was and the price of the bad food. By bad food, we are talking about everything from stale chips and blah ketchup salsa to over cooked bad tasting meat. Service wasn't all that good either.

We have been coming here for so long that it's like familia... Great salsa, traditional taquitos, tacos Guadalajara and Cadillac margaritas!

I am so sorry to say that most of the food is from a can! The service was with a smile but I seen past that to the dirty worn out interior of the restaurant. People please clean your menus at the end of the evening. I would not recommend this restaurant at all. the Taco trucks here locally are 100% better.

This is our favorite Mexican restaurant! The service is always fast, and friendly. The food is delicious! Today, we were in such a hurry but we really were hungry and wanted to get some food. So I called in and I said we'll be there in 10 minutes we're in a hurry. When we walked in our food was ready and hot and delicious!

It's a Mexican-American place. The service was okay. They weren't busy. We had a fairly central table in a fairly dark restaurant, we didn't really end up close to a window. As is the case with most Mexican-American Restaurants, our entrees included a slop of refried beans and a slop of rice. If Mexican-American is something you you like, then El Sarape is probably good enough. On the bright side, I bought a half order of chalupas and it was a very good serving size, just the right amount.

I recently ate here with my girlfriend, and had a great meal, excellent service, top notch margaritas, all at an extremely reasonable price. I recommend going here for what I consider the best Mexican style food in Olympia. The two-star rating this place currently holds, is a farce! Try it out!!

Get the lunch special. Don't expect a nice Mexican-American restaurant. It only provides the basics.

I'm reviewing this restaurant for the lounge area and happy hour. Pros: decent food on the half off appetizer list, happy hour till 7 pm, cold cold beer at 2.00 for Coors lite. Still can't give more than two stars because: Cons: Place is dingy, dark, chairs are all broken and old, cigarette smoke comes in the back door regularly, service is terrible. The bartender after 5 (Ms A) is frosty. She ignores you, she doesn't bring the bill even when asked twice, you sit there with an empty glass forever while she serves the regulars and chats with the other servers. We never saw her smile even at her regular customers, yet they seem to like her. We figured after we had been to happy hour there like 4 times maybe, just maybe, we could be considered "regulars" and treated a bit better, but after watching the behavior of the other people eating and drinking there (married women clutching the buttocks of several of the guys next to her, married men kissing and going out to the parking lot with other women) clearly we had a long way to go to meet their standards of behavior in this Mexican food/bar/lounge. These same people are there every time we go in, didn't matter which day. If you can go earlier than 5, the bartender before Ms A comes on is wonderful! Bright happy, cheerful, good at her job and makes everyone feel welcome with great service. Just don't feel bad if you aren't "regulars" after 5, it's everyone but the "in" crowd there. Trust me, you don't wanna be "in" with them. I'd have to say, any of the other El Serape restaurant/lounges (Tumwater or Westside Olympia) are far far better than this one. go there and basically stay away from this one.

Love this place!!! I've been coming here since I was a kid and I love it!!!! I think having only two stars is rediculous, this place is amazing!! The food is authentic Mexican food, not American Mexican food! It's absolutely perfect and I will make sure my kid come here and enjoy this wonderful food! I may not be for everyone but if you want great authentic Mexican food for a great price this place is where it's at!!

Dingy restaurant with decent food. The wait-staff was quick and pretty friendly. The food was a bit oily in the fajitas.

I would say the food here is laughably bad, except that the joke was on me. For $25 we got two vegetarian burritos that contained literally nothing but sauteed zucchini and onions. My husband had talked with them over the phone for our to-go order and he was promised the burritos would contain guacamole, rice, beans, etc. Not one of those ingredients was in the burrito. It was insane to wrap a tortilla around a small amount of zucchini and onions and not a single other thing and charge us $25. Also, the salsa that comes with the side chips is horrifically bad. We tossed it out--it's like watery tomato that tasted spoiled and not spicy. Seriously, if you're a vegetarian, or care at all about what you eat or where you spend your money, stay away from El Sarape with its staff who lie and serve bad over-priced food.

It's 90 degrees out today so I didn't want to cook. We decided on El Sarape since they are in the Entertainment Book and close to home. They seemed to have air conditioning but I would have enjoyed it a little cooler. I had a chicken chimichanga and the wife had the beef fajitas. Both were pretty standard typical americanized mexican fare. Portion sizes were large and the service was very good.

El Sarape has not been a consistent experience for me. Last night we stopped in after we went to a movie, it was after 9pm. Maybe that was the problem. There were some loud drunk groups eating nearby, which distracted from enjoying our meal. The music playing in the main eating area, was in competition with the blaring music from the bar, that didnt help either. When the food came it was pretty bland. Their salsa is ok and they give you a pitcher of water for your table, so you don't have to wait for them to come by and see you are empty, that is always nice. They are also pretty quick and always friendly. I think I will stick to eating lunch here, they are usually better then.

We went here for dinner on a Friday night. Total wait time was an hour, not including eating time. Approximately 40 minutes when we arrived, and we waited for appx. 20 more minutes after we were done eating, before someone down to get our ticket for us. The chips seemed like a stale/fresh blend, some totally lacking crunchiness. My food was warm (definitely had been sitting around for a while). Some tables were very close together. Food was not worth taking for left overs. Will not be returning.

Just like most of the food in Olympia, this place sucks. The chicken isn't marinated, nothing was seasoned properly, beans and rice are bland which is a big fail if you serve them with everything. The guacomole and salsa are not fresh. Depressing to think taco bell gives better quality.

The waiters here all look like mini Antonio-Banderases. So it's very nice 2b served by them. They have nice chicken mole enchiladas. Vegetarians order any combination with beans as a substitute for meat. Their choros are also very delicious but eat them quickly before they get stale. I did get a small fruit fly in my margarita once but the waiter was super cute and nice about it and brought me a new one right away.

While driving through, we decided to stop at El Sarape for some Mexican food. We were warmly greeted by the staff. We got the usual chips and salsa. The salsa was better than your typical salsa because it was smoky, chipotle like flavor. The chips were warm and a great compliment. My husband ordered the Asada Burrito and while he said that it was delicious - it was not more than average. Although, I give them an A++ on presentation. I had the Torta De Pollo Asada, it was the Americanized version it came with fries. Definitely tasty but not the Torta that I expected. Overall, if you're hungry definitely stop by - just don't expect anything extraordinary.

My husband placed a take our order for 1 carne asada and 1 carnitas dinner plate. When he got home we got a carne asada and a beef fajita. He called in the restaurant to tell them that they got the order wrong. The hostess who picked up the phone tried to tell him that it was his fault and that next time he had to be more specific. She didn't even apologize for the mistake. Instead of fixing the problem, she was just rude. My husband talked to the manager and got a refund. They have just lost a long time customer.

Not a Fan at all. Went durning lunch time and there were only three people working. The place wasn't really busy but they still sat me and my wife in back of the place alone and didn't like to check on us. We ordered enchiladas and asked for queso. We had to ask the someone where our queso was 20 mins later, which was some of the worst queso dips I have ever had, 10 mins later out food shows up. I order enchilada rancheras and they came out as verde, I ask one of the waiteress if they looked like rancheras and she said yeah. She just straight up lied to me like I didn't know the difference, I have had alot of mexican food in Washington, in Texas and in South Carolina and I have never had Green ranceras sauce. It tasted exactly like VERDE sauce. You can't lie to people when the menu has a picture of the rancheras sauce next to the menu item!!

I figured I'd stop in at this location and get some shredded beef enchiladas. I love the west side El Sarape, so I figured It would be the same. It wasn't. They only had ground beef, shredded chicken and shredded pork. I went with the shredded pork. There was potatoes in them! And the enchiladas sauce was off too. Cool bartender though.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
