Been going here since they've opened up and Matsu serves amazing Japanese cuisine. You will NOT find overly battered tempura, super sweet teriyaki, or ridiculous sushi rolls that mask the taste of the fish. What you WILL find is authentic flavors, kind service, and a cozy feel while you dine. * Sushi: Their spicy tuna roll has a wonderful balance of spicy with high quality tuna. The sushi here is definitely prepared by a sushi chef that cares about what he serves; fresh, flavorful, and elegant sushi. * Tempura: Lightly battered like it should be. A generous portion of veggies and shrimp and the dipping sauce is light and not overly sweet. * Sukiyaki - Enough for two as it's filled with lean cuts of beef, tofu, veggies, and clear noodles. The broth is perfect over rice. * Teriyaki - Come here to taste what teriyaki should taste like. MMMMM. * Udon - A delicious broth with tender noodles served in clay pots And to finish it off - you must try the COFFEE JELLO. Yes, it may sound odd but you like coffee ice cream, right?? It's really tasty. In the end, they are consistent with their food & service. They are super sweet family who runs the restaurant. Oh, lunch time bento boxes are wonderful too. Matsu plays this funny background music (it's pleasant) and I find myself humming it when I'm at home. Need to find out where I can get the cd. Go and you will know what I'm talking about. Enjoy!

Pros.. The chicken teryiaki!! The best, so tender and juicy. Neg.. Weird starters like cucumber something, weird black things, wierd salad dressing. Oh and the prices are pretty out there for teriyaki. For 2 people you'll most likely be spending 30+

I read the reviews and went there with high expectations. I guess I'm a little more critical of Japanese food, since I've been exposed to tons of it. The food was good, but not excellent. Matsu is a great neighborhood place that has good food. The level of the quality is not where other reviewers place it though. I had the saba (mackeral) my girlfriend had the tempura and her daughter had the udon. None of which jumped out as super fantastic. We also ordered a number of pieces of sushi. The rice was cooked well and seasoned properly, but not equal to Shiki or Shiro's. I would go there again since it's in the neighborhood, but not for a special occaision. In regards to decor, the place needs a face lift.

So after trying this place for lunch, I've decided that it's good but it's not super. I like sitting at the sushi bar and unfortunately the sushi bar here is covered by clutter...strike one there. The portions are just ok here, nothing to shout about. This place is good and there is no complaining but that's all. I like other places better.

Came here on Saturday for lunch. Guess what...no longer open for lunch on Saturdays. Please update your web site!

We returned most of the food we ordered because it was just awful. The tempura was the only thing we could eat. We returned the food politely an didn't request a refund. Instead of asking what was wrong, waitress insulted us. Avoid this place.

this place is the Ichiban! The beef teriyaki was like a steak. The sushi was great. soup and salad was excellent. This place is the Ichiban!

I've become a Matsu regular. Good quality sushi at a reasonable price. Surprisingly, dinner prices/portions are quite reasonable. They also serve a very nice lunch special -- for $9.50 you get 3 pieces of nigiri, 4 pieces of California roll, chicken teriyaki, shrimp and veggie tempura, and miso soup. I leave feeling stuffed and happy. The one negative experience I had was one lunch when I ordered the tempura and sashimi (it's better at dinner). Several pieces of fish were still frozen, and when I drew attention to this, I was told that it might take some time to defrost. No offer to replace the frozen sushi. At the end they did give a discount, but I wasn't thrilled with how they dealt with the error. The fact that they were once frozen doesn't bother me as it's a fairly common practice (the FDA recommends freezing to kill parasites and bacteria), but the fact that they were still partially frozen when served was problematic.

I don't live in Lynnwood but am up here working a lot. This is the only sushi place around and luckily it is good. I have been coming here for a long time. The food is reliable and the staff is very nice. I think the rolls are really good!

This is becoming our favorite North End sushi restaurant. The fish is always extremely fresh, and there is often a wide variety of special sushi options. It's also large enough to feel kid friendly (an important factor for me, and something that distinguishes this from our other fave place, Taka Sushi). The sushi runs the gamut from very traditional to some moderns rolls, but the focus is on good, fresh fish.

We came here with friends before we headed out for a Halloween haunted tour (see Bastyr University Haunted Trails). Matsu is located on a seemingly run-down strip mall, next to a Mexican place with painted bedsheets for a sign. Nice. I went with an assortment of nigiri and roll sushi, while Betty opted for the sashimi and sushi dinner. The wait for food was long, but since it quickly got rather crowded, we chalked it up to business. The service was kind and attentive, although this is generally par for the course in most Japanese restaurants. After ordering and during the wait, I got a chance to look around the place; while it's certainly no SoDo sushi joint, in terms of decor, the owners have a good attention to detail, right down to using the vented hanging cloth to cover up boxes in the hallways. It looks and feels like an independently-owned Japanese restaurant, and doesn't go overboard or is too kitschy (e.g., Sushiland or Todai). We chose this palce based on Yelp reviews; I probably should have noticed that most of the reviews say the tempura and sukiyaki are great, but few mention the sushi. Now I know why. While the fish on the sushi itself was quite wonderful and mouth-melting, the quality of the other ingredients was lacking. The seaweed was old, announced by its tough chewiness, and the rice felt and tasted like it was made from a make-sushi-rice-at-home kit -- none of the fluffiness or subtle vinegar quality that are hallmarks of good sushi. Overall, Matsu Sushi earns three stars, primarily because the service and fish itself was good. It is definitely a pricier locale, though, and we caught a glimpse of a couple that walked in, stood over a table and looked at the menu, then walked out. If I ever do come around to going back here, I'll definitely go with sashimi, sukiyaki or tempura. CONTEXT: Date: October 2007 Time: Dinner Table for 4, no reservations

Oh what these people can do to fish and rice! Sheer artistry. Friendly staff, sushi to die for and moderate prices. Why are you still here reading this? Haul your butt to the northern reaches of Lynnwood and partake of perfection.

CLOSED! Alas, Matsu is no more. I am so sad that the best sukiyaki in the puget sound is gone. Thank you for the many years of wonderfully tasteful cuisine. You will be missed.

I came in here on a Friday night with the boyfriend, because he was craving Matsu's signature teriyaki chicken. I agreed to go when I realized it had been a while since I enjoyed delicious tekka don shaped into a beautiful rose from the house sushi chef. We didn't get what we came here for. In any way. Immediately upon entering we noticed that things looked different. I wouldn't go as far to say "remodeled" because it didn't look complete. They kept the most outdated stuff from the old decor, and the new stuff didn't quite fit. Coolers and tanks were set up near the front, nearly half the seating was gone. We sat there idly for a few minutes while a group of younger people stared back at us. None of them were eating sushi. In fact, I noticed the giant bowls of soup in front of them didn't resemble anything I knew to be on the menu. We continued to stare ahead at the sushi chef that looked much different and younger than the one I was used to, waiting for help. Finally, a young guy came running out. Where was the old sushi chef or the sweet woman who always promptly greeted us? We sat down and were handed a one page, laminated menu. What happened to the heavy, multi-paged menu? What happened to the warm towels that would arrive the second you were seated, before? That's when we got it: They changed ownership. And as the experience went on, we realized it wasn't for the better. We were given tea without question but no water or other options for drinks until we asked. We ordered tempura to start. Boyfriend ordered the teriyaki chicken, and since tekka don no longer exists on the menu, I ordered a shrimp tempura roll and two pieces of salmon. I was told that there wasn't enough shrimp tempura to do the tempura and my roll (on a Friday night?) so we had to choose one or the other. I decided to go with a plain jane cucumber roll instead. And, my salmon was ignored. It didn't show up at the table, but it didn't end up on the bill either. Go figure. The tempura was just okay, but the sauce wasn't right at all. The teriyaki chicken was not the signature teriyaki chicken my boyfriend was used to. This new chicken resembles what you would find at a teriyaki joint but didn't even taste as well. The bad aftertaste it gave after I tried it forced me to eat the ginger that came with my sushi to get rid of it. It was also partially cold, and the rice it came with was cold. The cucumber roll was just a cucumber roll, and well, I have no idea about the sushi since I didn't get any. I watched the server look at us a few times to see we were done, but only after the 4th time decide to give us the check. I guess the only upside here is that it was much cheaper of a bill than it would have been at the old Matsu Sushi. However, If we were charged the same amounts, it would be even more of an outrage than it feels like right now. The old Matsu was outdated but it was cozy, inviting, and it felt authentic. Nothing about this place feels that way anymore. I feel guilty that I didn't visit Matsu enough before to figure what happened to the previous owners. I can't even express the sadness I feel that it will never be the same, and that my favorite tekka don spot is gone. When reading other reviews, I noticed that the chef from the old O2 is the one behind the bar now. I guess It's just as well that I didn't have any sushi -- I did not like the sushi at O2 even a little bit. This place should change names so that customers aren't duped into coming to it under the pretense (and yelp reviews) of what Matsu USED to be. RIP Matsu Sushi. You were loved.

Under new ownership. They have cleaned up the place, which is nice. No longer run by an older Japanese couple, now run by a nice Korean family. Flavors are not there, homespun feeling gone, and their tempura is just terrible. At the time or our visit, several items on the menu were no longer being served that had to be pointed out after we tried to order. Basically this has turned into another Teriyaki and "sushi" joint. I'm bummed...

3/21/2015 well, hello there chef jin! where have you been? so glad to see you again! chef jin is the new owner of Matsu Sushi. chef jin was the head sushi chef at O2 Sushi before it's unexpected closure and sale to the current owners in 2014. you all know how i felt about chef jin so i am thrilled to see him at Matsu Sushi. currently, Matsu Sushi is open only for dinner. seems there are a few details that still need to be worked out transitioning to the new ownership. it looks like it is chef jin with a young assistant behind the sushi bar, one person in the kitchen and a young waitress. the sushi bar has been opened up. we actually could sit at the sushi bar, and not have to stare at a wall of sushi trays and sushi boats that barricaded the sushi bar. we could look into the sushi bar space, see the fish in the cooler and speak to chef jin and watch him work. the old carpet has been replaced with a new wood floor. the middle row of the three two-top tables are gone. i'm not sure what they are planning with that space. there is a tank of live halibut and sea cucumber by the front door. the menu is limited but focused and should have enough variety to satisfy most everyone. yes, there are plenty of sushi rolls. the sushi and sashimi plates don't list what will be on the plates. it is strictly up to chef jin to choose what he will serve. i like that. prices are reasonable starting at $19 for the sushi or sashimi plates to $27 for the sushi/sashimi combo. as always, go sit at the sushi bar and order your sushi or sashimi plate and have chef jin fix you what is good and fresh for today. tea served upon seating small bowl of edamame and seaweed salad served miso soup and salad. croquette (korokke). two deep fried mashed potato dumplings (pancake style) with tonkatsu sauce. as expected. gyoza: crispy deep fried. generous serving. as expected. chicken karaage: weakest item. almost too crispy. not bad, but i've had better. very generous serving. sashimi and tempura combo: beautiful cuts of fish and large tempura serving. great value. sushi plate: nice presentation and generous slices of fish. 8 nigiris and 2 rolls. you get one nigiri of each fish so you can taste a wider variety than if you were served the common 2 nigiri serving per fish. the rolls were tekkamaki and kyu maki. these are very tradtiional hoshomakis. another great value. we were spotted fresh sea cucumber and little bitty deep fried baby octopus. the sea cucumber will most likely be an acquired taste, but adventurous folks may enjoy. it smells and tastes like the ocean breeze. the baby octopus were one-bite tender. it's not on the menu but i would order this the next time if chef jin has any on hand. i think he serves these to the sushi customers or heh, to people he thinks would enjoy them. fresh fruit served was served at the end of the meal. service was satisfactory except at the very end when we had to ask for our checks. it apperas our waitress was doubling as kitchen help. she was cheerful and pleasant. all in all a very satisfying dinner. if you give chef jin your email or phone number he will alert you when he brings ins some special fish. welcome back chef jin!

I have been a Lynnwood resident for about 10 years and Matsu Sushi has always been one of the best kept secrets around here. It certainly was the best place to go if you were looking for a calm soothing atmosphere after a rough day and authentic Japanese food for that "umami" flavo Last night's visit did not go well. I noticed the change of decor and the server told me that they were under new ownership for the last 6 months. Gone was the relaxing Japanese music, replaced by ubiquitious K-pop. I noticed something was off when instead of the usual Japanese appetizers, they presented me with kimchi, pickled onions, and squid jerky with hot sauce (traditional Korean appetizers, banchan). Weird, I thought. I had ordered the deep fried squid, ika-karaage. When it arrived, it did not come in soft pillowy sections coated with crispy deliciousness. They served out full sections of squid tentacles that looked roughly beheaded and worse, it was ROCK HARD. I mean it was cooked, not frozen, but I spent 5 minutes chewing on that tough piece of leather. The tempura was a disappointment. The batter was not light and crispy. Everyone knows youre supposed to chill your tempura batter in ice water to get it the right spidery consistency when it fries. My tempura arrived coated with THICK batter that it looked like my prawns and vegetable were coated in a MUSHY cocoon. To make it WORSE, the vegetables were LIMP and MUSHY when they were supposed to be crisp. The only points the tempura gets is that they gave me 5 pieces of large shrimp (usually Matsu Sushi only gives out 2) which unfortunately was poorly cooked. NEVER COMING BACK HERE AGAIN. EVER. What a disappointment to have a 5 star restaurant go down to a Teriyaki joint and not a very good one at that.

This used to be great sushi. New ownership now which doesn't appear to be Japanese anymore. There were subtle things that gave away the lack of attention to detail that used to be here. The part that stuck though was that I ordered the matsu plate and came home sick. Needless to say, not coming back.

My Japanese friend and I went here for lunch last week and she really liked it and wants to go back. I had the Bento Box and it was definitely worth the price. My friend ordered a variety of sushi pieces from the menu. And the service was great.

Finally got a chance to try this place after hearing great things from several people. We had a great experience. The fish is SUPER fresh and the menu is simple and authentic. I went with a more omakase experience, which I never do, because I got the feeling I would be in good hands. It definitely paid off. Great cuts of fish that melted in my mouth! The hubs ordered a "fru-fru" roll (shrimp-tempera-california-type thing) which he wasn't super impressed by, so I would suggest sticking with the basics, which they do well. The spicy tuna roll was fabulous. We also tried the miso black cod and we devoured it to the point of licking the bones. SO GOOD. The location is rather tucked away in a small strip mall, but most map apps will be able to find it no problem. Google maps took us right to it.

This is a run-of-the-mill sushi restaurant...especially for the Seattle area. The food and service were good but the decor and ambiance were apt for the strip mall that this place lives in. Inexpensive, plain-jane sushi...get yours to go.

The owners of the original Matsu Sushi retired (early 2014) and sold the restaurant, but it re-opened under new ownership with the same name. The new owner did some minor re-modeling of the interior. The menu remains mostly the same. The menu prices are slightly higher, but not so high as to be a dealbreaker. I really enjoyed the food of the original Matsu Sushi since it served food that was very similar to what my Japanese mother cooked. When she visited me, I always took her there and she too enjoyed the food. Although the new owner or owners kept many of the same menu items, the quality isn't the same. My biggest gripe was the rice wasn't cooked properly (too dry or too old) which is cardinal sin for a Japanese restaurant. The breading of the deep-fried pork cutlet in the katsudon and tonkatsu was too flimsy. The beef sukiyaki was served without any shitake mushrooms and the beef was tough. No miso soup was served with meals. I've only been there twice so my experience is limited, but that's my initial impression. Since there's new ownership, there is probably growing pains. There aren't too many similar Japanese restaurants in the area. If they can improve the quality (taste) of the dishes served, the new ownership can carry the banner (reputation) of the original Matsu Sushi. Hopefully, they'll succeed.

So I'm not often moved to write reviews but when I am it's because I believe it's worth sharing.... This sushi joint is well worth a visit. Tucked in a very unassuming and rather sketchy looking strip mall this is one of the most authentic sushi bars I've found on my US travels so far. When you walk into a sushi bar and see a live fish tank with product in it you clearly know it's fresh!!! The chef, a classically trained sushi chef, literally came to that tank a couple times I was sat there and grabbed some seafood and prepared it. Sitting at the bar I watched live shrimp put on a plate in 30 seconds, and a whole live halibut dispatched and served up to three tables is 5 mins. Also got talking to some obvious regulars, a family where the dad had brought in the shrimp he'd caught earlier that day off his boat and the chef was serving that up. It's no frills so all you shishi Los Angles folks don't expect fancy but it's pure, honest down to earth Japanese style sushi and well worth a try. I known I'll be back!!!!

This is our favorite "go-to" Japanese restaurant. Yes, they have sushi but they have many more authentic Japanese dishes on the menu. This restaurant has a sushi bar, but beyond the "typical" American expectations, they have much more to explore on the menu. We have never been disappointed...always happy with the attentive service. The portions are beyond generous. Happiness...is a special Japanese restaurant.

I realize they have this in fine print on the menu, but still.. They were going to charge me extra to switch out tuna for cucumber rolls. I think that's ridiculous. I feel that they should go out of their way a bit for customer satisfaction, esp. considering how many years I've eating there. That being said, cali rolls are still creamy good, unagi is still grilled and sauced to perfection, and miso soup is still not too gritty.

Matsu Sushi is, perhaps, the reigning "senior" member of Japanese cuisine within Lynnwood city limits. In late 1999, Chef Matsushima took over the spot that once housed Tsuruya restaurant in the quiet Highline Plaza and quickly upgraded the quality of truly authentic Japanese cuisine. For a short period of time, Matsu's competition was Sushi Taka, Taka Sushi, and Edina Sushi, with Sushi Moto of Hwy. 99 all providing formidable challenges. Today, Matsu Sushi stands out for its consistency and top-to-bottom scrumptious offerings. I have dined here at least fifty times and this place is one of the last real Japanese restaurants that offer a 100% real-time, 100% Japanese atmosphere in dining. From the décor to the music to the utensils/dishware to the "smell" of the place, this is exact dining like you were in a small neighborhood in Japan. There are no losers on the menu so feel free to pick whatever you fancy. For lunch, I always go for the "daily special." For $10, you get a full-throttle meal of the classics. As for dinner, start off with a large Sapporo to whet your palate, then go for it. The sashimi and/or sushi platters are stellar. While anyone can cut a fish and slap it on a ball of rice, Chef Matsushima maintains strict quality control and uses only the highest-grade sushi-level rice and you can taste the subliminal difference. The standout cut of fish here is the salmon. On most occasions, you will receive a deep orange pigmented slice of flesh that is bursting with the essence of what salmon is and should be. And, the meaty texture is firm and slick with omega-3s. Just as exceptional are the fried menu items, specifically the "katsu" or cutlets. A really good Japanese restaurant prides itself on its breaded and deep-fried meats and this one is a classic. Crunchy but not over-greasy. Flaky but not burnt crispy. And, the meat is juicy, not dry. I have spent as much as $25 for a thick cut of pork cutlet in Tokyo so I know what it is like to be in katsu-heaven. This place does it best here. The chef's daughters only make a rare appearance as servers, unlike in the past, but the service continues to uphold the tradition of high expectations when dining Japanese. This place will not be around forever so get here soon for a fast-disappearing glimpse of what ubiquitous fine Japanese dining used to be.

Matsu sushi was located in a strip mall that doesn't seem to have any interesting store... It was a small cozy Japanese eatery. Nothing trendy or big sushi menu. I tried a few appetizers, calamari, tempura, sunomono (cold seafood appetizer), Kani croquette (imitation crab and mashed potato inside) and boiled spinach. Nothing stands out but all were OK. Portions were not big as other Japanese restaurant nearby. They have daily specials posted at the sushi bar area so check it out in addition to the regular menu.

You may be able to find comparable sushi elsewhere in western Washington. Matsu Sushi does it fresh and seasonal, straight forward, no nonsense. Very good! But you won't find better beef sukiyaki in western Washington. I've been looking. Nobody does this dish better than Matsu. Go here for beef sukiyaki! The missing star? They've stopped being as careful and detailed in their service. No more hot towels, less cheerful greetings, louder music...just details. Still the best Japanese food north of Seattle. Get some while you still can!

I personally love sushi and I have few favorite restaurants that I visit regularly. I visited matsu sushi due to my friend insisting to try this place out. When I walked in, Japanese songs that I've never heard was playing. The view of the restaurant is very authentic. There is a live fish tank right by the sushi bar which probably means the fish is fresh. I ordered sashimi plate which was about 20 dollars and I was really surprised how good it was. Probably best and freshest sushi I ever tried. I recommend this place to try those sashimi! You won't regret it. I told the owner that I'll be coming back within a week.

This place use to be my favorite until a few weeks ago....there were only a handful of tables in use when we got there at 5:45 and yet it took over an hour for our order...we had ordered 2 extra items to go so my husband could have something for lunch next day and when we finally flagged down the waitress for our bill and the to-go portion of our original order she must have forgotten to turn order into chef because she came back and said it would be another 20 minutes...we said forget it...by this time it was already almost 7:30. We also noticed the quality of the maki rolls was not up to par...have decided to find a new favorite sushi bar.

Ordered sukiyaki, ebi and spicy tuna tonight. And some mochi - green tea and red bean. The portions are huge!! And the dinner comes with salad and soup. It was fresh and absolutely delicious. It is family owned so they are so friendly and go above and beyond. We have had chicken and beef teriyaki before along with Udon and it was Delish then as well. Great food, great service and great environment. And there were tons of regulars that came in while we were there and they knew everyone's name!!! Love this place

I don't know what sukiyaki is supposed to taste like, since this was my first try. But it was delicious! It was perfectly sweet and not too tangy. The veggies weren't overcooked, and there was a lot of them! Maybe just a bit too much cabbage and not enough cellophane noodles. I only say enough noodles because I was surprised to even find them at the bottom of my bowl. I was so full, but I wanted to keep eating. Their agedashi tofu is the best I've eaten so far. The tofu is perfectly crispy, and the sauce was very tasty. Everything came out piping hot, which is a huge plus for me! They are kind of pricey, though. The waitstaff is very friendly, but maybe a little slower than I was expecting, but I was really hungry! I would be back here for a hot meal-- my friend's seafood bowl also tasted good, and there were generous amounts of fish in it.

Tempura o taberu no to sushi o taberu, dotchi ga ii desu ka? Niku o taberu yori tempura/sushi combo o taberu hoo ga ii desu. Tempura to sushi suki desu kara. Kino, Matsu Sushi ni tabe ikimashita. Sushi wa totemo oishii deshita. Watashitachi wa tanoshi deshita. I thought that a compromise between tempura and sushi was solved by ordering the combination. This sure solved my hunger pangs for both. Miso soup was great, and we enjoyed the crunchy tempura and the fresh sushi. The waitress was super friendly and kid friendly. I had an enjoyable time here in this small corner of Lynnwood.

I've been on a mission to try new sushi spots in the Edmonds/Lynnwood area. Matsu was next on the list. The yelp reviews are very hit or miss so I was unsure what to expect. The spot is pretty hard to find. I actually drove right by it twice before realizing where it was...but that has nothing to do with my review. A friend and I arrived around 8 on a Friday night. There were 2 other parties there, so rather quiet for a Friday night. The menu was pretty standard, which was disappointing. I appreciate when sushi houses feature a handful of uncommon options. Our order: house salad, scallop sashimi, spicy scallop, toro sashimi, spicy tuna, shrimp tempura roll, soft shell crab roll. We also had 4 bottles of saki and a couple tall Sapporos. The scallop sashimi was very good. Very melt-in-your-mouth. The tuna was totally average. The spicy tuna was ... not. It was definitely just a tuna roll, and really nothing other than tuna, rice and seaweed. This was about what I'd expect to find at the grocery store. The shrimp tempura and soft shell crab rolls were also fine, nothing special. Total bill was $100 +tip, so about average prices, maybe a little on the cheap side. Overall, it was good, not great. Pretty average across the board. Not a mistake to try, but probably won't be back. There's better in the area.

We were meeting some cousins for dinner last week and one of them frequents Matsu Sushi quite a bit. Tiny little place in a strip mall. Tiny. Yet, full of awesome! We were a table of 7 and were catching up and not really getting around to ordering. The server, in an extremely respectful way, said to our cousin (in Japanese, and ooh so softly), "There is another large group coming in, and I don't want to rush you at all, but if you all order at the same time the food will take forever in our little kitchen." It was a gracious move on her part....helpful to both us and the kitchen. Plates of tempura (veggies, crab, and shrimp), teriyaki beef and chicken, ton-katsu, California rolls, and sushi plates....along with your staples of miso soup, pickled veggies, and rice soon way overtook our table. Everything I shoved in my pie hole was fantastic! I'm sure there are a billion Japanese restaurants in the greater Seattle area, but Matsu Sushi deserves your patronage at least once.

Located in an unassuming strip mall in Lynnwood, this Japanese restaurant provides solid fare for a decent price. There are better restaurants in Seattle but sometimes one finds themselves north and craving some sushi without dealing with Blue C at Alderwood. We went directly at 5 p.m. but noticed that during our meal, the restaurant began to fill up with regulars and patrons waiting on to-go orders. Our waitress was exceptionally friendly and brought us hot steamed towels after we placed our order. She checked on us a few times during our meal but never to the point of harassment. If you are in Lynnwood and crave Japanese food, this place will fit the bill. We were pleased with the items we ordered and you can check out my uploaded photos if you'd like a good idea of the portion size.

I've been going to Matsu Sushi for years. It's not the best Japanese food I've had, but this is coming from someone who has a Japanese mom, and lived in Japan for a while. I rarely come to Matsu now, but when I do it's usually during lunch time. Their lunch combinations are pretty good, although I'm not a huge fan of their teriyaki chicken. There's too much sauce for my liking, and the chicken isn't consistent - sometimes it too tough, has a lot of fat, but other times it's fine. Their miso soup is pretty traditional, but comes with like 4 tofu cubes. I'm spoiled with having a ton of tofu in my miso soup! But I love their miso dressing they put on their salad! Their ebi furai (deep fried shrimp) is pretty good, which came with rice, miso soup, salad, and otsukemono. There were 3 shrimps, but they were pretty small compared to other ebi furai's I've had. However, for $16.50, it seems a bit overpriced...but hey, I'm cheap. So that could be a great price for all I know. But I'm sure you can get a better ebi furai elsewhere for the same price. Matsu Sushi definitely isn't the best Japanese restaurant in the area. There's much better Japanese restaurants in the area - especially downtown Seattle. Yes, it's expensive there, but I believe it's worth it. Otherwise, Matsu Sushi will definitely satisfy your sushi cravings in the Lynnwood area.

I looked for the best sushi in Lynnwood and had to choose between these guys and another one (right across the street). A friend and I found ourselves here and I'm so glad we did! It's nice inside, the edamame was delicious. We ordered 5 rolls to split between the two of us, and each bite was wonderful in every way. If I had the money to go out (and felt like eating white rice for the rest of my days) I'd go here daily. Recommended if you like yourself a simple, delicious sushi roll. Go for it!

While running a few errands in Lynnwood, my girlfriend and I had a craving for sushi. Not knowing the area, we used Yelp to explore [nearby] sushi restaurants. Matsu Sushi showed up, 4-stars, 67 reviews. It looked promising but fell short. The plain sign and window treatments screamed bento box dinner. What the hell, we'll give it a shot. We were greeted by a friendly waitress. "Table for two please". She motioned us to one of the back tables without meeting us at the door. I surveyed the sushi bar. Stacks of sushi boards surrounded the sushi bar nearly touching the ceiling. The front table was covered with specials and announcements. One in particular stood out, something about market prices being high for a select number of fish options. Nothing out of the ordinary. The dinner menu offered a wide assortment of combo items with less focus on nigiri and rolls. One item jumped out at us - one of our favorites - miso black cod. Matsu Sushi was charging an incredible $21.50 for the dish. Our favorite spot in Seattle charges less than $10. We would have loved to compare the two in order to understand the astronomical price difference. Items ordered: Hot sake, Tonkatsu, Scallop (nigiri), Amaebi (nigiri), Albacore (nigiri), Negihama roll, Spider Maki. We should have stuck with a few more hot sake orders and the Tonkatsu. The Spider Maki was probably the most disappointing. We placed the order and received it a few minutes later. The presentation, flavor and texture screamed 'I just came out of the freezer and was quickly warmed up and wrapped'.

Pretty great sushi! Unexpectedly ended up here while trying to find another restaurant and I'm glad we did! The sashimi and rolls were yum yum as well as fresh. The also have black cod collar which is one of my favorites. Overall, the prices were decent and the food tasted great.

Food is delicious and very presentable. I love the Sushi and sukiyaki here. The only bad thing about this place, would be the service. Service isn't all that great, sometimes. Depends who is working. I probably suggest never go there close to closing time (obviously) but I was hungry and craving for sushi. great good, not so good service and slight expensive. But it is worth it if your looking for good sushi and not poor quality/portions.

For what you pay for, you don't get a lot... may be I just need to orient myself to sushi in this area, but although fish is fresh, my salmon sushimi included the very fishy grey part near the skin. Usually that is cut out for cooked dishes, and it seems to be a sign of skimping. I also had the tempura udon... the batter was delicious, but for $11, you get 1 shrimp, 2 pieces of veggies. And the space itself is uncessarily dark... like you walked into a cave. A very uninspiring meal, will keep searching.

Trecked into Matsu Sushi last night after seeing the copious numbers of fantastic reviews for a non-chain restaurant in Lynnwood. From the outside, you can't really see into the restaurant, but when you get in there are a good number of tables. We waited a bit to be seated, but were greeted in Japanese and seated promptly. Me and the lady ordered everything to share and got sukiyaki, tempura, and spicy tuna rolls, California rolls, and uni. The food came out really quickly and our server was super nice the whole time. The miso soup was delicious, not grainy as has been noted in other reviews. Whatever they use on their tempura is delicious, really crunchy but light. The shrimp tempura was sooooo good. I ate more of the sukiyaki than I care to admit, but thought the beef could have been more tender, as it seemed a little tough. I really loved the noodles in the sukiyaki, such an interesting texture, and I could drink that broth for days. The California roll was really delicate and the avocado in it was melt in your mouth. I don't normally enjoy raw fish, but the spicy tuna roll was good and had a nice spice level. I tried uni, only because I've seen Anthony Bourdain eating it with relish on tv too many times not too. I have too say, it wasn't as bad as I imagined, but I didn't really like the texture or the flavor. I can't give this more stars simply because of the pricing and my level of enjoyment. It was good, but when I got the bill, this definitely wont be a place I could go back to often. I understand good sushi costs money, but the sukiyaki didn't justify its $18 pricetag. That said, three stars aint bad in my book.

This review does not cover any of the sushi. I came in here with my sisters because when I yelped teriyaki this place came up as being close, and we were already in a rush to meet some friends in Greenwood. The place was small and I've never noticed it before even though I lived in the Lynnwood area for over 10 years. When we opened the menu my eyeballs almost dropped out. Maybe because it's the Greater Seattle area and there's a teriyaki joint in every plaza (along with a Starbucks, or espresso stand) I was kind of appalled at the price. $14.95 for CHICKEN TERIYAKI? My younger sister looked at me, almost as if to ask if I wanted to leave. Nope, we didn't have time, so I told her this had better be the best damn teriyaki she's ever had. She order the CT, I ordered the Salmon, and our elder sister order the chicken sukiyaki. Before you get your food you get a side dish of salad, this tiny amount of cucumber with a couple of shrimp, and this black colored stuff...might've been seaweed? The black stuff was the only thing I didn't like, and while the apps (of course) didn't fill you, it can take that edge off of being hungry and only makes you further anticipate your food. The entrees came quick and yes it was the best damn CT she'd ever had, my salmon was great and my sisters chicken sukiyaki was YUMMY! I loved this place! I went back a month later with my boyfriend and got the salted mackerel which was equally incredible. Its definitely pricey, but the food is unlike what I'm used to having at a sushi and teriyaki place so I'll be back!

My sister and friend wanted sushi and while I don't like sushi, it was two against one. They didn't end up ordering it anyway, heh. I used to live in Lynnwood and I don't remember this place, but I don't know how long it's been in its current location. It's right behind the jack in a box on the corner of 196th St and 44th Ave next to a Korean BBQ. Now, I don't know much about Japanese food, but I ordered the chicken sukiyaki (didn't even know what it was, heh) and it was DELISH. The chicken was tender and the cabbage was wonderfully delicate and enriched in the broth. I even ate the tofu and I hate tofu. The flavors blended well and it was so, so good. Drool worthy, I'm telling you. Dinner came with miso soup, salad, and marinated seaweed (forgot the name). Very, very filling and I sadly did not finish it all. The service was quick, but very friendly. Definitely outdated decor, but who cares. It was clean, warm, and just what I needed after running errands all day in the cold rain. Sounds like I'm describing a bath, but they ARE warm and you come out feeling relaxed and refreshed and that's how I felt after eating at Matsu Sushi. And very, very full. :)

Did we go to the same place? I did not get a 4 1/2 star feeling after eating at Matsu. I went twice this week. The first time, we ordered sushi, and it was pretty good. The most memorable thing was how fresh the fish was. The salmon nigiri was delish. I just wanted to note a strange fact: if you ask for any substitution on a roll, they will charge you $1. I asked if they could make a unagi/avocado roll because all they had on the menu was unagi/cucumber, and the waitress said I'd have to pay an extra $1. I passed on that... The second time I went to Matsu, we tried the baked oyster appetizer, which was TEENY TINY for the cost and strangely served in a seashell--somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, Ariel is swimming around with one boob hanging out. My friend ordered the soba buckwheat noodles w/wasabi dipping sauce and tempura. He was not happy with it because he felt like the sauce tasted "plasticky." I ordered one of my favorite Japanese dishes -- beef sukiyaki. It was kind of small for $17, especially compared to a place like Miyabi in Tukwila (look it up). It was literally a pot of onions/cabbage with a few overcooked slices of beef, some overly cut-up shirataki noodles, one shitake mushroom, two pieces of carrot, and 4 squares of tofu. :( The sukiyaki tasted good, but the ingredients were so sparse. For $17, at least give me TWO mushrooms! Our waitress this time was not so nice. She was very stand-offish and cold. Rather than ask us if we were ready to order, she walked up to our table and stood there with her pad and pen, without saying a word. It was awkward. She did it 3x because she kept coming back when we weren't ready to order yet. It was a strange experience.... If I ever go back, I will have to stick with ordering nigiri and sashimi, and pass on the rolls and entree items.

A couple friends and I were craving sushi and we were in Lynnwood so we thought what the hell, Yelp is pretty reliable. Welp, we were wrong! Matsu Sushi had a 4 star rating and after eating there, I feel like perhaps Lynnwood residents aren't aware of what good, fresh sushi is, because we were highly disappointed in the quality of fish. My friends and I all had different dishes and rolls, I'd say out of 6 different dishes, we maybe enjoyed 2 of them. The food wasn't terrible, but for seafood in the Seattle-surrounding region, it should have tasted immensely fresher. The waitress was very kind, but pretty inattentive. Sad to say, but we definitely won't be going back.

One of my favorite place for good Japanese food. I've never been disappointed. If I want excellent and affordable this is the place. I always order the dinner combination of sushi and tempura because why mess with perfection. If my husband and I have time during lunch on a weekday we head to Matsu for their Bento Box that comes with everything good in this world. Their lunch specials comes with green tea, teriyaki, sushi and tempura. The fish is always fresh, the tempura is always perfectly fried with just the right amount of batter, so light. The teriyaki sauce is not too sweet, just the right amount of sauce compared to other teriyaki joints I've been to. I'll definitely be going back, again and again and again.

This rainy, evening found us at Matsu. The husband and I were craving chicken teriyaki and Mr pulled into the lot where Matsu sushi was. Let me say that this place is not your standard teriyaki joint, I was looking for our usual fast food type teriyaki, not sit down service. I put all expectations out the door and sat down for a delightful dinner. Being our first time we ordered pretty "safe". We both ordered a teriyaki and tempura dinner combo, and a spicy tuna roll. Like I said we played it safe. Out came our salad, sunomono, and a kelp salad. They were all good, and the contrast in textures and flavors were pretty good. They timed our miso soup nicely too. The waitress was pretty attentive and kept an eye on things. Then again it was maybe because we were the only patrons on this blustery evening. Our entrees and sushi were pretty good, and flavorful. The chicken teriyaki was meaty and portions were large. The tempura was perfectly fried, light, and still hot! It was real good. Our spicy tuna roll was flavorful, the tuna pieces were not your standard chopped tuna. It was actual big pieces. Service was nice and not overbearing. Loved that I got a big fat pot of tea to myself. We will definitely be back, and explore more other menu items. If the items were as consistent as tonight, then I think we may of found a reliable Japanese restaurant in the north end. Only time will tell.

We finally got to try this place! It is definitely good! I so loved my Kasuzuke Black Cod and I was impressed that the side order of the Hamachi had tails! My friend told me authentic Japanese sushi should have those tails =) so interesting =) My friend ordered the Matsu Sushi dinner special and she was impressed with the freshness of the fish. She ordered uni in the middle of the meal and it arrived toward end of our meal. When she took her first bite, I can immediately tell by her expression that it was DELICIOUS which she confirmed verbally. =) We were wondering if it is this good all the time. Today is their first day back in business after their vacation so everything must be fresh and the chef and cooks are in better moods =) Well Yelpers are giving good reviews so it must tell you something about the place =) I would say it definitely deserves 4.5 stars... but i'll be nice today and round it up to 5.

I went here for dinner for the first time. Judging by the reviews, yelpers say it's very fresh, tasty and moderately pricey. I was very excited! However, after having a $30 meal I completely disagree. The raw fish was NOT fresh at all! It tasted like something they've stored away for a long time. The taste was mediocre that I ended up liking the ginger 3x more than the actual sushi. Although the vegetable tempura and the rice wasn't bad, I would DEFINTELY NOT COME BACK here. It was overpriced for the quality of food. On a positive note, the place is decorated nicely with Japanese partians. The service is superb and that's why I give it 3 stars. But you are certainly better off heading to beltown.

It would have been 5 stars for the 10years of great food I had at this restaraunt, referring people to M.S.,many many dinners with friends and family.I often went in myself to do paperwork, read,or just chill and enjoy some quality time and good food.Never had a problem with seating,I liked a booth so I could sit comfortably and have room to lay things on the table. One day,I went in,requested a booth, and was told by my waitress that since I was one person, that I couldn't have a booth. The waitress had gone to ask the chef, the owner about seating,he told her no booth for a single patron. It was not overly crowded or anything, and I was a regular customer.I was offered the sushi bar,I did eat at the sushi bar but wasn't happy with the treatment I received, and clearly the chef was not willing to listen to his daughter,my waitress.Sadly,I never went back. It's been several years now,and I have missed the very good food and,up until that day, good service.A good and loyal customer should not have been treated this way.I hope the owner is treating his loyal customers better,as they are what makes a restaraunt successful.

This is my all-time favorite Japanese restaurant. The staff is friendly and fast, and the food is amazing! It's always hard to decide what to order when I get there. Their chicken teriyaki is nothing at all like the fast-food type, it's juice and not overly sweet. It's perfection. My other favorites: katsudon, tonkatsu, and black cod

One of Lynnwood's best kept secrets. It doesn't really look like much as it is tucked away in a plaza, but don't let its outward appearance deter you. As you walk in, you are greeted warmly by the hostess. The restaurant is small yet has a very intimate and cozy feel to it. I had the bento lunch box special. The quality of the sushi is better than most casual sushi places I've been to. The tempura light and crispy. The teriyaki was delicious, the meat tender and flavorful. Overall, I had a pleasant experience.

The staff is quite friendly and the quality of food is fantastic. While they do not really have any US style rolls they do have many authentic Japanese dishes and offerings. Would recommend to anybody looking for a good Sushi experience.

This place seems like a very authentic, multi-generational, family run, kaizen esque (refinement, refinement, improvement) mindset that only Japanese people could endure type establishment. However, the "Chirashi" (good dish to measure an authentic sushi restaurant) was an absolute disaster. I felt like cancelling the order, but I am not that thick skinned so I resisted.

I want to preface this bad review by saying that I am admittedly a sushi snob. Most people probably wouldn't know the difference between bad and good sushi, especially if they stick to rolls. So this review is more of a warning for the serious sushi lovers. So I was in Lynnwood with a sushi craving and found this place on yelp. 4.5 stars with over 40 reviews was worth a shot. Looked on the website and the chef was trained in Japan. Sounds authentic too! Should be decent, even if it's in a run down strip mall next to Lover's Package, right? Well... I should have known better. I asked for omakase 10 pieces of nigiri. What came out was what you expect on a typical sushi combination order besides the toro. 10 awful pieces of sushi for $25. For $25 I can get 10-12 pieces of truly amazing sushi elsewhere. The fish was basically butchered. They looked ok from the top, but it was ragged at the bottom as if the knife was too dull. The fish wasn't very fresh either and was of subpar quality. The toro, rather than melting in my mouth, tasted chalky. Even the color of the fish seemed off to me. And don't get me started on the poor excuse for sushi rice. It was very cold and hard and tasted like plain white rice without the vinegar and sugar that makes it sushi rice. And I had to cut out half the rice to make it edible. A huge block of tasteless rice under a mediocre at best piece of fish. Blue C sushi tastes better. I bet the grocery store has better sushi. I cannot believe this place is rated so highly. And today, my bf is not feeling well and suspects food poisoning from the sushi last night. I'm guessing it may have been the scallop nigiri he had since that's the only one I didn't eat and I'm feeling fine. I spent $30 for my first bad sushi experience in years. My bf spent $25 for a stomachache. I hate wasting money on bad food more than anything!

Did not meet expectations. Sushi was just okay. Hot food was good. Service was okay. The place is dated. Maybe because it was the end of the night, after ordering and receiving food, service all but disappeared. The sushi rolls were priced well but the rice was dry for me. Again it may be because it was the end of the day. The Tempura was hot tasty and the terriyaki chicken could be more tender. Presentation was great. The bentos were pricey though, starting in the upper teens. Overall, this place just felt middle of the pack when it come to sushi joints. I will just have to keep looking for some good north end sushi.

This is one of those simply amazing sushi restaurants that is tucked away in a strip mall. It may be hard to find, but definitely worth programming your GPS to find. The sushi is very fresh every time, no matter what day of the week. The wait staff is always friendly and very prompt with your sushi creations. They even have a cool poster at the end of the room to help identify what your fish looked like when it was still swimming in the ocean. Definitely worth a trip to Lynnwood!

Don't take AMEX and no WiFi. Your Korean restaurant neighbor 2 doors down has WiFi. Maybe that's why they had more customers last night when I was there. Wake up and understand customers and technology.

It's been a long time since I've been to a Japanese restaurant. I guess it's because for the price, they better return the favor by giving me really fresh fish, simple yet amazingly flavorful dishes, and good service. Obviously, I haven't had this experience recently... Until today! Considering Matsu Sushi is a small spot in one of many suburban strip malls, I was pleasantly surprised. The server was super nice and diligent (she noticed a kitchen mistake on one of our orders before bringing it to the table). I ordered the lunch special of chicken teriyaki, tempura, sushi, and sides which include miso soup and two salads. The portions were not big, but large enough to satisfy. What really amazed me was the sushi. I got three pieces of nigiri and three pieces of California roll. The roll was nothing to brag about, but the fish was amazingly fresh. The cuts were a good size as well. Next time I want some sushi, I might just have to call on Matsu.

This place is a find. My wife and I grew up in LA, I would say it has the best sushi anywhere short of Japan. I digress, on a scale of 1 to 10 Matsu gets a hearty 8. The rolls are full of fish not all rice, and the fish quality was very good. When you take into account the low price, Matsu is easily a 10. We got 3 healthy size rolls, an order of salmon nigiri (great by the way), miso, and tempura app for $50 including tip. That is a deal! Don't let appearances fool you, or let it if your that type, less crowds for the rest of us.

OMG...the food here is great! My husband and I were in Lynnwood last night with my in-laws and wanted to try someplace new to eat in the area. My husband and I love Japanese food so we wanted to see if there were any good restaurants in the area. I checked Yelp and found this place. What a find! I'm so glad the other reviews mentioned the physical location of the restaurant because it probably would have been a little more difficult to find. When we walked in we were greeted by the friendly hostess who seated us immediately. The hot towels that were given to us was a nice touch. The menu was filled with a variety of items to chose from. I ordered the Beef Teriyaki and Sushi dinner combo which included a new york steak and 5 pieces of nigiri, 3 pieces of cucumber roll and 3 pieces of tuna roll. While a little pricey at $20.95, you certainly do get a lot of food for the cost. And, the sushi was great quality. My husband got the Matsu Sushi dinner which included a whopping 10 pieces of nigiri, 3 pieces of cucumber roll and 3 pieces of tuna roll. My mother in law ordered the Tempura dinner and my father in-law got the Chicken Teriyaki and Tempura dinner combo. I was really amazed by the amount of food we all got with our dinner choices and it was all so delicious. Everyone was more than satisfied with their meals. The service here is great. We received our food in a timely manner and our water glasses were alway filled.

I found it! Sushi Nirvana. In an unassuming, slightly seedy strip-mall in Lynnwood, across from the Police Station. No Joke. I came here for lunch on a Saturday, and the signs on the outside of the door stated that they were NOW OPEN for lunch on Saturdays! I was so relieved that they were, because I don't know what I would have done if they were not. My sister and fellow-sushi-lover and I walked into the tiny restaurant, and we were the only customers in there (apparently the Saturday lunch must be very new). We were greeted with "Moshi Moshi", and seated, and served a great cup of tea from a sweet Japanese lady. The interior of the shop was homey, clean, and friendly, reminded my sister and I of our favorite chinese spot near our parent's house in MLT. We ordered two lunch combos- I went with a chicken teriyaki and sushi for 11.95, and sister-dear went with a sushi and sashimi combo for 15.95. OK, it was a little pricier than our other favorite sushi spot in Lynn-Hood, but when the food came out, I knew we were in for a treat. The miso soup was delicious, not salty at all, and I finished the whole bowl. The salad was standard lettuce carrot and cabbage and had that dressing stuff on it, but it was nice and light and so refreshing on such a hot day. Then, the main course. A whole california roll (tuna and veggie), FOUR pieces of assorted nigri, perfectly cooked rice, fresh ginger and wasabi, and a large portion of gently cooked perfectly juicy chicken teriyaki. A huge amount of food, and it was all great. The sushi was absolutely amazing, perfectly seasoned, the freshness of the fish was astounding, it left no odor on my breath afterwards, even when I burped. I snagged a piece of my sister's fresh tuna sashimi. It was tender, perfectly cut and perfect thickness, and seasoned with what I can only describe as Love. We got a more than ample portion of sushi with our meal. Matsu-san really is the best sushi chef I have encountered in my short, inexperienced time as a sushi connoisseur. 30 dollars for two people to eat(and have leftovers) left a pleasant taste in both of our mouths. If you want fresh, delicious, reasonably priced, real sushi made with love and attention, In the north end, come to Lynnwood! Now open for lunch Saturday!

    - Greeting: Polite, friendly (is it me or family owned restaurant has warmer feeling than a chain restaurant?) - Wait time: I got table right away on Christmas eve, don't know about other times. - Price: Most expensive thing on the menu doesn't go over $2

I tried Matsu for the first time tonight. I was pleasantly surprised. I have to echo the comments of other reviewers... a little outdated, hole-in-the-wall, surprising for a strip mall... but once you taste the food, you forget about all of that. I had the Ume Sushi platter, which came with Miso and a salad. The Miso was full of flavor, not the typical bland broth that you get at other places. The nigri melted in my mouth, and the tuna roll was fantastic. I will have to go back and try more of the menu. This place is one of the best.

I got take out from here tonight: chirashi and Spicy Tuna roll. They have two different versions of chirashi here that are $4 apart, so I got the pricier one to see what it was all about... and wow, what variety! Probably the most varied assortment on chirashi I've ever seen. Big slices too! But only one of each kind of fish, and I wanted more salmon. :( The fish itself was pretty good. Additional kudos because the spicy tuna roll was made with hot sesame oil and not spicy mayo. I love the authenticity that brings. The spicy tuna was heavy on the tuna and light on the oil, so it burned just enough to give me a kick, but didn't leave me running for water. The server was super polite, and the place was quaint but felt authentic. The one down side was the sushi bar. Chairs at the sushi bar were super low. Boats were stacked on all sides, blocking the view from the patrons to the sushi chef. Add the banners hanging from the ceiling and you really can't even see into the sushi prep area. I guess it's the chef's choice, but it's really such a shame. The only time I saw the chef was when his arm emerged from behind a banner with my to go order. Overall, a good experience. But far away. I'll only be back if I'm in the neighborhood, but I will definitely remember this place.

First it should be noted that I am by no means a sushi connoisseur but do enjoy it from time to time. I had a friend in town from Montana and he wanted to partake in some "good sushi". Our original plan was to go to someplace in Capitol Hill or Belltown, mainly because of the assumption that we couldn't get good sushi outside of the trendy Seattle neighborhoods. After some research here on Yelp and several menus online it appeared that Mastu would be just as good as anything downtown. It was a little hard to find and without reading the reviews first I would have never thought to try this place. We started with edamame and miso soup, both were good but nothing extraordinary. We then ordered several pieces of nigiri including fresh snapper, yellowtail and salmon. They were all larger pieces that had the perfect amount of wasabi and tasted as fresh as can be. We also ordered the Northwest, California, Sake, Spicy Tuna and Unakyu (eel) rolls. The northwest roll could have used a little more cream cheese but the spicy tuna and sake rolls were fantastic. The spicy tuna had a nice kick but little to no aftertaste. I had never had eel before and while it was not my favorite, tasted like well cooked beef fat, but it had good flavor and made me rethink my originally perception of eel. Overall don't let the location and exterior appearance steer you away from this restaurant. If you are looking for a variety of Japanese dishes without the hassle of downtown this is the place to go!

Stopped by here since I was nearby for a work appointment. I nearly decided to go to the Korean restaurant 2 doors down - but decided to stick w/ Japanese since I've been hankering for sushi. I had a lunch special for $9.95. For the price it was fine. Nothing stellar, but all seemed reasonably fresh & well-prepared. There were only a few others there for lunch on a Friday - don't know if that is normal or not. Service was fine & it was a clean, pleasant environment. And yes, it is in kind of a random strip-mall...but isn't everything in Lynnwood?! (don't hate, just kiddin' sorta) Side note: several places - restaurants & retails spots seemed shuttered along this pretty major road (Chevy's, billiard place, etc...). Sad sign of the times I guess.

Came here for lunch the other day and we were impressed! This little Japanese restaurant is in a little strip mall by a Korean restaurant, a bowling alley and a small burger drive thru. I would've never thought to try this place if it weren't for my friend's recommendation. It is authentic Japanese food...a little hard to find these days since a lot of people are so into the modern "Asian fusion" type food. I love it when I can find authentic Japanese...not like Wasabi Bistro downtown where the food is so overpriced and not good at all! The servers are friendly, fast & attentive. I had a ten-don and it was a good portion- 2 shrimp tempura, 1 eggplant, 1 zucchini, and 1 broccoli piece over rice. Very reasonably priced here. Will definitely be back!

Coming from LA / SD, this is as good as it gets. Havent ventured Seattle yet, but for this area, I think it is. $23 Chirashi is my typical dish for sushi quality. Pretty decent size for me, couldnt finish the rice. But it is definitely not what you would expect in LA / SD. Rice was hot, Miso was good and there was 2 appetizer dishes. Pretty good to say the least and the service was great, I drank about 10 cups of tea, and should ahve gave her more for tip since she was 5 ft away filling my tea every 5 minutes. Nice polite all that, but not over bearing, or silly like Japadog!.. ha!

Great portions. I ordered Beef Suikiyaki for the first time and this place did not disappoint. The broth was really tasty and the beef was tender. Authentic Japanese

Definitely a gem, especially in Lynnwood. All the typical nigiris are offered, and they are great! The price is typical of a regular sushi price, so if you're a kaiten sushi goer, you may balk at the price first, but so far when we went in groups, the per-person price is actually not bad at all, considering you're getting a fresh sushi and at a much better quality than any kaiten sushi. My only gripe is that they don't have any selections of gunkan-style nigiri, which is unfortunate. One time I managed to have them do it for me, but on others they were reluctant to do so.

Well, since I've been writing mostly about Japanese restaurant since I joined Yelp, one more review for Japanese restaurant wouldn't hurt, yeah? Matsu Sushi.....hmm. Okay, you sushi lovers, I will give you one more insight. Not all sushi chefs possess same skills and experience and you agree, right? Here are my top sushi chefs (I'm talking sushi not hot foods) in Seattle area based on my own criteria (ALPHABETICAL) My criteria has nothing to do with whether the place has customer lines out the door. The only criteria is their expert skills at preparing highest quality end products. And no, it has nothing to with whether he has good social skills/humorous with English speaking customers sitting across the sushi bar. Jae ; Chinoise Cafe On Madison, the youngest in the list but can stand against any of them. Kazuo san; Red Fin, formally at I love Sushi Bellevue/Seattle. Definitely one of the best, some of you would know him for sure. Matsu san (the owner Matsu Sushi); yes he is quite old now but back when he was in Japan at young age, he is known to have earned high places in All Nippon Sushi Tournament. Since many Japanese sushi chef in US actually have never worked sushi bar in their home country, I think that has some merit. Excellent knife skills. No, he won't make you a fancy roll with crisped macadamia nuts outside ^^. Nishino san; a genius at creating something wonderful out of nothing. Saito san: Saito's sushi and sake bar, is it still there? Anyway, a perfectionist when it comes to nigiri. Yama san; Tokyo in Factoria, well I gave poor review for Tokyo in general but has nothing to do with his skills. Some have grown up eating sushi made by him since childhood are now in college. Very well balanced nigiri and sashimi. So, why did I list top sushi chefs here? Because in my own opinion, Matsu san stands above them when it comes to pure skills. Please don't expect a 'fun time' with him if you visit after reading my review. He wants to serve you with his foods not with his mouth... I still remember his wife's killer tempura... :)

It's a beautiful crime that a sushi restaurant of this quality is located in the same strip mall as Lover's Package. I was turned on to Matsu by reading the reviews here on Yelp. Yet another excellent recommendation from the community! The fish here is always astonishingly fresh and tasty, and the teriyaki chicken was a real awakening to me. Sublime sushi, deliciously light tempura, addictive teriyaki. Service is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is mellow; I often see families with small children munching away happily. My favorite sushi restaurant in the 'Hood.

I love this place. Love it. Their rolls are fabulous, and their fish is wonderful. I've had many of their dinner entrees and they have all been wonderful. The teriyaki is fantastic!! The sauce is light and thin, not goupy and overpowering like "TERIYAKI" places. Tempura is wonderful. The Sukiyaki is my boyfriend's favorite meal there. When geoduck is in season, get it here. It's so fantastic!! It is family owned and operated by wonderful Japanese family. When you come in you get a hot steamed towel, then they give you the little salads, sunomono and I don't remember what the other are called.. You get soup (miso), and an iceberg salad with their special radish dressing. We often go here for birthdays because we aren't rich. Their prices are good for how much food you get; we always get too much so that we have leftovers!

After reading Jay's review I had to come check out this spot. Can't say I was disappointed at all. It's a cool little spot, that's almost hidden b/c they don't have a large sign like most plazas usually would. I was very impressed with their knife skills. The rolls all tasted so fresh like it was butter, probably the best sushi I've ever had, not that I'm an expert by any means. The lady is also very friendly and always wears a smile on her face. To top it all of, you can't go wrong with Mochi ice cream, I think it's like 2 pieces for 3 dollars. Since my first time coming here, I try to visit once a week, although their hours of business confuse me. They're closed on Wednesdays, and closed between 2-5PM? atleast they were closed after 2PM today(Saturday). Despite that, I'd definitely recommend coming here if you're looking for a low-key, peaceful, and enjoyable meal!

It's always nice to see Japanese restaurants in the US serve miso soup Japanese style (no spoon). It gives you a more authentic experience. I never knew you weren't supposed to eat miso soup with a spoon until I lived in Japan. The sushi and sashimi was good and gets served with the nice beige ginger, not that weird pink stuff. Ginger isn't pink. Pickled ginger shouldn't be pink.

Went to MATSU SUSHI AND WAS NOT IMPRESSED BY THE BOILED , UNFRESH CHICKEN THAT THEY TRIED TO PASS OFF AS TERIYAKI,ALSO THE SUSHI WAS JUST FROZEN FISH THAWED OUT AND WAS NOT FRESH AT ALL!! The portions were tiny and price high. I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK. YUK!!

This is a really small place that is hidden away behind Dave's Burgers, next to the Lovers Package. I came in a few weeks ago and had their special for lunch. The special changes frequently and is always posted on the outside of the restaurant on a dry erase board. The decor of this place is a little old school, there are booths on both sides with a few small tables in the middle. The booths were a little worn so make sure you fit your butt on the middle of the 2 person booth seat or else you'll feel the springs on your buttocks. Never the less, the food was quite good, my girlfriend had the chicken yakisoba and a sushi roll and she really enjoyed it. My special came with 4 pieces of California roll, chicken katsu, small bowl of rice, soup and a small salad. We spent a little under $30 dollars for the both of us with tip included so it was quite reasonable. The sushi roll that my girlfriend got looked really fresh. All in all, good local place for Japanese food with reasonable prices. We will be back!

Six of us fit snuggly and ate contentedly at a booth at Matsu Sushi, a place that filled quickly after 6 PM. Absolutely delish, fresh sushi that satiated the palates of four. Two in our group are sushi fanatics from San Francisco, and they were very pleased with this find. Two others consumed the udon noodles and the chirashi dinner with great delight. The large chunks of fish and roe tucked into the corners of the Bento were both very tasty and colorful. Yelp was the beacon that pulled us into this lovely, friendly Lynnwood sushi place, right behind the famous Dave's Burgers drive-up...but that's another story!

I previously gave a 5 star rating to this restaurant. My wife and I really liked to go there because it's one of the better sushi restaurants in our area. We have dinner there at least once a week some time even twice or three times a week and always tip well (20%+). We always spend a lot of money here ($80-$100 dollar per meal) until one recent bad experience. We have been taking our 4 month old son to this restaurant 3 or 4 times in his car seat carrier. He always behaved well and slept peacefully while we were eating and never caused any problem. Recently we went there again and there were several tables open, but the waitress told us to sit in the seat right next to the door because it's their policy that baby has to sit away from other guests because other guests don't like crying babies. So we sat at the table and every time someone opens the door the cold air comes in and made us really uncomfortable. I am sorry but I will probably not go to this place again. If my kid isn't welcome here, I don't feel like eating here either. Sorry Matsu Sushi, you have lost a customer who has spent thousands of dollars here.

This place is hard to find...tucked away in a little strip mall between white linened children kicking each other and a commercialized sex shop, but KEEP LOOKING. Do not give up! It's worth it! You know when people always talk about that hole-in-the-wall with the amazing food? This is one of those places. It's small and simple and dated inside, but very clean and worth the half an hour you will spend driving up and down 196th and 44th trying to find it. I love the sukiyaki, the vegetable tempura, and the majority of their sushi rolls are pretty darn tasty. Beware: I am a vegetarian and cannot attest to the quality of the fish or anything but I've heard no complaints from my non-vegetarian dining partners. Most dishes come with so many opening courses like lettuce salad and thinly sliced cucumber in vinegar (sorry kids, I ain't one of those I-know-all-the-names-of-Japanese-food types) that I'm almost full by the time the main course comes around. They do the hot towel thing and all that jazz, so it's about as authentic as Lynnwood is going to get. If you like Japanese food, GO THERE. It's a hidden gem!
