My favorite coffee shop in Langley. Friendly staff and great coffee. We always make sure to stop in when we're over in Whidbey - you should too!

My husband surprised me with a whale watching tour up in Whidbey last Sunday for my birthday. So we decided to grab a few sandwiches from a local restaurant, Useless Bay to take with us. We knew going in that this place had great reviews and was highly recommended by the Yelp Universe, but we were honestly not prepared for how flipping AMAZING the sandwiches would be. The Coffee house and restaurant is a bit unassuming. It has a large patio area for al fresco dining, and a pretty, classic brick facade. When you first walk in the entry is a bit snug, with a few scattered tables and chairs to the left, and brightly lit bakery counters to the right showing off their baked goods and their freshly made sandwiches. You can either order from the counter like a typical sandwich shop, or you can actually grab a seat at one of their tables for a full dining experience. The small entryway opens up into several rooms that lead into one another. You can tell that the building was once comprised of several smaller rooms that were opened up to allow for the flow of the restaurant. Lining the walls are photographs of the town, the island, and several historic residents of the area. It's from those photos that I learned that the Useless Bay Coffee Company is housed in the former city hall, which has now since moved to the former Masonic Temple across the street. Back to the sandwiches though. They. Were. Amazing. We got two sandwiches, one was the Autostrada, and the other was the Turkey Cheddar. They were fresh, and panini pressed to perfection. I don't think you understand. These sandwiches were so perfect. Complex, savory, fresh, unique, and exactly what we needed. They were so filling too, and had us set for most of the day. If you are on Whidbey and are looking for a light, satisfying lunch, you should absolutely stop by Useless Bay Coffee Company. I know that we'll be back to check out the rest of their menu.

A funky, welcoming look straight out of Austin Texas, an outstanding iced coffee (strong, smooth, flavorful), and also the best food so far on Whidbey Island. They smoke their own pulled pork and you can get it on a nice salad with pickled jalapenos, pickled onions, and roasted tomatoes -- or whatever it is you want instead. Tacos with house-smoked pulled chicken were good too, with some unusually great black beans. I could eat here all week.

My husband and I stopped in for a hot tea on a beautiful morning. Neither of us drink coffee, so I can not review that aspect. We ended up not getting anything because we could not be guaranteed that the Chai Latte was vegan. They do offer rice, soy and almond milk, however the chai was a mix and it may have contained powdered milk. They do have gluten-free options but their food is heavy in cheese and meat. Sorry vegans, you can't go there. Really cute place in a lovely setting though.

Yum !! My husband came on a weekend getaway to whidby island. We are loving all the places we eat!! This little coffee house is more than coffee & bakery items. The ingredients they use is high quality & it shows.

Useless Bay Coffee Company was the first stop in Langley after arriving from the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry earlier today for me and the kiddo. Wide variety of food items are available: panini sandwiches, baked goods, soups, salads, burgers, breakfast fare, and of course, coffee! Super friendly counter and barista staff. What did we order (w/ tax and tip under $24): 8 ounce hot chocolate ($1.80) 16 ounce mocha ($4.25) Lemon brioche ($2.65) 12 ounces organic Ethiopian roast beans ($10.95) The indoor seating was taken up because there was a trio playing live music, but fortunately on a sunny Saturday, there's plenty of outdoor seating. Well tended plant beds (daffodils!), chirping birds, and bubbles floating from the machine at the next door glass studio and gallery. Hot beverages were spot-on perfect. For me, that was one of the best mochas. The lemon brioche was very tasty - not too eggy and ample lemon curd in the center. Great people, food/beverages, atmosphere and vibe - worthwhile stop during a visit to Langley!

Went here with a my company for a work retreat. Had great eggs and toast! Lots of room to spread out and have the conversations we needed. Will definitely come back next time I'm on the island.

It's our family tradition to stop here for brunch and live music whenever possible. The best Huevos Racheros on the island!

All we had was coffee, so this review is based on that. Stopped by on a sunny September Thu. Very few visitors in town. COFFEE: 4.0. Decaf and regular Americanos. The regular was a medium-roast. I would have preferred darker, but it was well-made nonetheless. SERVICE: 4.0. Prompt and friendly. AMBIANCE: 4.0. Large area inside and outside.

Great cafe that has a lot of seating inside and outside the location. The food and coffee was great- the pressed sandwiches were delicious. We went on a Sunday and there was a live group performing music, a great touch to the ambience of the neighborhood. Would definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area!

Everything is perfect about this coffee shop. From the hand crafted drinks, the panini sandwiches, to the 5-star service. This place is a must when you're in Langley!

My favorite coffee shop on the south end of Whidbey Island. Wonderful food and coffee. Live music throughout the day. The ambiance inside makes you feel like you are in Europe. Abundant outdoor seating for spring and summer. Great location to stop at while walking around Langley.

I love creatively put together coffee shops. Obviously owned by artists, this place has spunk. Latte is Devine. Cappuccino with copious amounts of foam is mouth watering. Baked goods are really good and not too sweet. Such a welcome change from any chain like coffee shop.

What a beautiful place. Love the location and atmosphere. They have outdoor seating for lunch. We ate an Italian sandwich and it was the BEST I have ever ate in my entire life. They also have a big coffee and Italian soda selection and their white chocolate mocha was to die for. The employees were also very friendly, even asking me where I got my glasses from. Very good vibes.

Delicious food, inventive coffee creations, and options for those of us on restricted diets (i.e. Almond Milk in addition to Soy). Ample indoor and outdoor seating. Classic Pacific Northwest atmosphere and service with a nice blend of crusty and friendly. Went there all three days that we were in Langley.

I'm a little sad I didn't get a coffee here. Funky vibe that seems more aimed at residents than tourists. They have a simple lunch menu of burgers, a few sandwiches, salads, tacos, and chili. One of the better chilis I've had with a home made crema topping. Fish tacos are also very good.

Great food, great drinks and wonderful service. I can't wait to come back and bring my friends!

  • J P.

This place is awesome. Two Americanos, an iced tea, a soy latte and a soda came to $12. That's probably fairly normal in this area, but if you're used to Starbucks pricing it's a welcomed change. My latte came with a really cool image drawn in the foam and it was absolutely delicious. Husband's Americano was amazing as well. The staff was so friendly, the (dog friendly!) garden outside was relaxing and a lovely place to sit. Lots of places for individuals/groups to find a place to take a break. Wish I lived in the area...I'd be a regular.

  • Shaula M.

Full espresso bar with all the options, including rice & soy milk. Lots of creative lattes and nice chocolate in the mocha. There's a nice assortment of baked goods, and some packaged GF/DF cookies (Thank You!) There's also a full menu we have yet to explore for bfast & lunch. Lots of creative indoor & outdoor seating and music sometimes in the morning. This is clearly a destination!

  • Michelle S.

I haven't come close to even trying half of what these people have. And I'm already sure this place is wonderful! They had such a nice trio of musicians playing when we got there, and the atmosphere was homey. I really enjoyed my coffee and it was masterfully made. Frankly, this is the first good experience I had had this morning, and it really made a difference to me!

Came here with our kids. Great fresh food. Fantastic outdoor eating...sunshine helps! Recommend fish tacos, pork tacos, pulled pork was ok, great burger! We'll be back!

A charming little coffee shop in Langley. You can stop in for mid-morning live jazz, just a cup of coffee, or an excellent breakfast. The atmosphere is fun and fresh -- a great way to start off your day!

We wanted to hit up mukilteo coffee company (VERY good also) again on our way home from a weekend at deception pass, but it was closed. So, I sadly searched out something that just might compare. I ran across this place and saw the good reviews. We were actually right next door watching the glass blowing, having no idea that such good coffee was waiting within feet of us! This place makes an amazing latte. The coffee is great, and the barista did a fine job with the art... Kudos! Even bought a bag of the Smugglers Bay to bring home.

Nothing fancy, but a good meal for a vacation island day! I kept it simple with eggs and potatoes. They offered a nice alternative of tomatoes to toast if you would like it.

Only went here on a random morning looking for coffee. The americano and espresso we ordered were great and the place smells amazing! We will be back for breakfast or brunch next time we're in the area :)

  • Julienne P.

Ordered Americano and Mocha - both were just okay. It gets really crowded in ordering / pick-up area where everyone is in each others way. There's really not a good place to stand to wait for your drink and you are literally constantly moving to get out of someone's way. It doesn't help that they have 2 doors right in this same area that customers are always coming in and out of - I'd recommend they lock one and put a sign up to use the other door to help reduce the chaos (even if they did, it would still be fairly chaotic in there). We chose to get our drinks elsewhere next time since morning chaos just isn't worth it for us.

Great iced vanilla lattes. A bit difficult to get to given the street construction but worth the effort. Filled with locals and the breakfast smelled good.

The food here is beyond delicious. I have never had such perfectly flavored and textured potatoes alongside my breakfast! Fast wifi, lots of space in the back room with cool arts on the walls, and a spacious front garden for when the weather's nice. I've always found the servers to be friendly and accommodating, too.

Incredibly delicious coffee, great breakfast/brunch/lunch choices. Very crowded on the weekends, but worth the wait. Outdoor seating for when it's warm enough to use it.

Great spot for a quick bite with delicious food. My husband really loved the vegetable tacos and my BBQ burger was juicy, and perfectly cooked. The portions seemed reasonable (not huge) and the service was fairly quick. You order at the counter and your food is brought to you.

  • James A.

Nice atmosphere and great location.... Just had coffee today, which was very good and demonstrates craftsman quality roasting. Have to come back for lunch at some point so I can give a full 5 for the food as we'll... Pricing is a little high, but quality is good too.

Good mocha. Art on top was amazing. Not very sweet so ask for more chocolate if that's an issue. I had the omelette with bacon and cheese. Tasty. Another reviewer was praising the potatoes, I thought they were ok. My wife got the Mediterranean omelette. Ingredients were good and generous. Sauce was overpowering. Service was wonderful. We'll try the Braeburn tomorrow.

Went last year and had good but tried to go twice this weekend and had crappy service. Nonexistent service. Sure we get it you close at 3pm but we were there a couple of minutes before 3pm and waited in line only to be told the kitchen is closed. How about telling us before we waited? Or being nice about it? Can't say we were too disappointed to spend our money elsewhere.

Everything the owner does is to perfection. The coffee is the best on Whidbey.

My favorite place for breakfast & coffee on the south end of Whidbey Island, always fresh. I love the breakfast burrito with a side of bacon!

  • Steven S.

Not the first time I've been here and a deliberate, unwarranted phlegmatic service is evident. In-house espresso (ordered Americano) was Starbucks-like. Aligning with most coffee shops, the baked goods are exclusively sweet with exception of the abominable regional interpretation of bagels. Why no savory goods? Average. Very nice outdoor seating, however.

We stopped here for sandwiches in the late afternoon. The young woman who took our order was so incredibly friendly. She told us not to feel pressured for time to pick out a sandwich and to let her know when we were ready. She seemed delighted by our order and was really friendly. We had fun sitting on the patio area and admire the flowers and serenity around us. The sandwiches were bomb, too. I enjoyed the Della Della. I don't remember what my Eating Companion had, but they were very pleasantly surprised by the little containers of hot peppers that came with the sandwiches.

  • Layla K.

All I wanted was a simple club sandwich. That's all. I asked for no tomatoes, and instead of cranberry whatever sauce I asked for regular mayo. They don't have mayo.... Ok I'll take pesto. How can a place with multiple sandwiches on the menu not have mayo? My sandwich comes with both tomatoes and cranberries. Clearly the girl taking my order didn't care or the cooks dont. I then asked for ranch dressing for my overcooked fries which they also don't have. Awesome.

A nice place to enjoy some breakfast and a coffee (especially on the outdoor patio when it's warm). The housemade apple pork sausage is quite good and the rosemary toast is delightful. They make my omelette with egg whites only without any grumbling and the free WiFi is appreciated. One of my favourite places to chill in the morning.

  • Brian E.

Nice place to enjoy a (good) cup of coffee or a hot chocolate. We like sitting in the back room...well lit with lots of windows, retro tables, and pretty mellow. In the summer, people will jam on the patio (the music quality is hit or miss), but on a sunny day, who cares. Worth a stop if you're in Langley.

  • Paul V.

I love this coffee, everyone who visits me loves this coffee, anytime I go back home they request I bring some of this coffee... you get the picture, it's a good cup of joe. I wish there was a simpler way to buy it in Seattle, online only or when I'm visiting Whidbey.

Very disappointed in our experience at UBC. My wife report the Havana was good, the Bacon Burger was ok, but the breakfast was very disappointing. Eggs were not cooked to order, potatoes bland, and my toast cried out for mercy. Coffee wasn't bad, but due to the mediocrity I give one star. This is very unfortunate. We wanted so badly to like this place. This would be a "Walk on by" in my book. Sorry UBC.

Damn, Useless Bay Coffee Company is really awesome. The atmosphere is killer: it's well decorated, good music, etcetera. Great lighting too. The food is the best though. My favorite are the fish tacos- they never fail. BUT, the beans that come with them leave something to be desired. Brunch is also phenomenal here. Great dishes, simple and complex ones! Their coffee is really where it's at. It's always good. I think they roast the beans in house or something? I'm not sure. It's all local though.

Stopped here to grab a bite to eat after a hike. The garden seating is lovely, and we were pleasantly surprised by the menu options. We both got fish tacos (one Baja, one salmon), but there are lots I sandwich and burger options too. The outdoor music is a nice touch.

Great coffee, bought a bag to bring home. Also, full breakfast & lunch menu. Pancakes were delicious & nice omelette choices. Country potatoes were well seasoned, yet just slightly undercooked (I still ate all of mine though).

I had looked up places to visit while on Whidbey Island and this place came up as one of the best in Langley. I ordered an iced americano. When one popped up on the bar, I thought it was mine, but was wrong. Apparently there was a bunch of people before me; it took at least 10 minutes just to get my drink...and I didn't even order anything fancy. A little too slow for me. Napkins/milk and cup covers were in different parts of the store, so I found myself walking back and forth...not super efficient. Service was ok, but nothing exceptional. Not super friendly. I couldn't connect to the internet, if there was any, but I didn't ask for help. Great outdoor seating area, although it would be nice if you could exit from the patio. It is closed off so you have to go back into the store to leave.

My family stopped in here for lunch last Saturday and it was decent. I ordered the chicken sandwich with slaw. The sandwich was pretty good, perfectly seasoned and not over sauced like some places. I got the slaw with mine and it was just so so, nothing special about it. My wife got the club and she thought it was alright, nothing to write home about. My biggest frustration with this place is it seems over priced for what you get, not only that but I have to bus my own table after I'm done. Next time I'm in town we will definitely try something different

We took the ferry from Mulkilteo to visit. We were craving for some coffee as we were driving around for hours just sightseeing (visiting from ca). The place is very cute from the outside and inside. Too bad it was really cold because the outside seating area was super cute! We ordered Soy Lattes and americanos but man they were very strong. Everyone was very friendly and it was a relaxing atmosphere. However, i'm not sure if I would come here again for their coffees if I ever visit this Island again...

  • Chris S.

One of the best iced coffees I've ever had. Latte was also excellent. Lots of seating indoors and outdoors. Great for both small and big groups to get your caffeine fix. There was live jazz music, playing outdoors. Whenever I'm on Whidbey, this will be my coffee spot.

Very nice and friendly atmosphere. Food was quite good, we tried the cheeseburger and the tacos. We are definitely going back. Can't wait to sit in their garden in summer. 1 extra star for the bocce court, awesome!

We were in Langley @ 9am and we were looking for a coffee shop. Then we found this. Here are my observations: 1. The people @ the counter are not friendly. 2. Very good coffee. 3. Breakfast muffins are fluffy and savory. It can be 4 stars but I'm not really a "fan".

  • Dana G.

Perfect start to a fall Sunday morning ... one of the best damned cups of coffee I've had. Happily, UBCC does not follow the near-ubiquitous burnt-bean trend. Tasty seasonal pumpkin - cranberry scone & ginger cookie on the side hit the spot with me & my sweetie too. Hip, kitch, cute to boot with a good vibe. A definite repeat when we return to Langley. Good enough for us to stop twice already in the same day!

  • Kris O.

The last thing we expected at what we thought was a coffee shop, was to get an amazing burger! A cheap, huge, amazing burger, that is! For under $10 we each got an enormous, delicious bacon burger with a ton of equally delicious shoestring fries. They were very busy, but we still didn't have to wait long for our food. We went back for breakfast the next day, and were happy to find their coffee and omelets are also great. We will definitely be stopping in here again the next time we are in the area.

Great people with great coffee. Just follow the full aroma of the daily roasted coffee beans to a delicious cup of coffee. Mochas, lattes and food was wonderful.

Best lattes and great atmosphere. The town of Langley is so cute and Useless Bay Coffee Co is in the middle of town near the bookstore, movie theatre, shopping and much more. A great place to have a private party too. We went to a rehearsal dinner for a wedding and were amazed by how good the food was!

  • Tracy A.

The best burger on Whidbey. Absolutely fresh, hot, and tasty with layers of flavor (based on bacon avocado burger and a cheeseburger). Their bagels are great (which is hard to find on Whidbey, and thus worth a mention) and their coffee is solidly good - not the best I've had, but definitely of a quality and flavor well above most (try Coupeville Cafe for Stumptown excellence). Reducing one star only because it often feels so chaotic ... ordering and drink pickup takes place right inside the only door, where there is also a big column taking up space. It gets crowded quickly and trends toward noise levels that aren't in keeping with "relaxing cafe vibe" ... but their staff are perky and friendly, and receipt of food and drinks is pretty quick. We'll be heading back often to try more of their fare: paninis and breakfast for sure!

  • Cara S.

I am not a big coffee drinker. I stay away due to most places make their coffee so strong and I can only do a mild brew. I have to say that I was able to drink my entire cup of coffee with no issues. It was mild but still amazing!! I bought a few bags for home. I just finished them and I am trying to order more from them online~ Yes it is that amazing!!! LOVE THIS PLACE!! A must GO!

This was what we could find as we ventured North accross Whidbey Island on Sunday. The good, the food was tasty. The staff was friendly. Free wifi which is cool in a place that has no cell data coverage. The not so good, EXPENSIVE for what it is. No Coke or Pepsi products you pretty much gotta drink coffee, tea or other coffee house esque beverages. I can live with this but they should at least have canned pop. Also the clear your own table thing bugged me. With what we paid, it should be more full serve I give it three. The food was very good and they seem like good small town people. If you want cheap, proceed to Oak Harbor or to Dairy Queen in Clinton. If you want a nice lunch or some great coffee and tea and money is object, eat here. I will likely come back when I get to Whidbey Island as I liked the burger a lot.

I ONLY HAD THE COFFEE!!! Specifically, 2% latte, doppio. They are slow and they don't have 20 oz to go cups, but this was some delicious, smooth, dare I say creamy? Coffee. Nice looking place, too. Way better espresso than most places on the Island, IMHO. Especially that horrible place that looks like it'd be good, but isn't, that is next to the grocery store in Freeland. You know, that big newish complex. That little place looks really cute and happening, but their coffee is ass. I mean ass flavoured. I know you think you're desperate for a coffee, but you will be disappointed. Not if you get coffee at the place I'm reviewing. They could use a nutmeg-grater though, how hard would that be? It would be cool too. Not too poseur, just nice. I've said enough.

Simply perfect coffee. I bought a bag of beans while on vacation and I knew that it was going to be good. The alluringcolor of the roasted beans and their oily shimmer piled high in the grinder hoppers at the counter almost made me swoon. The acid balance, roast, and grind were perfect. So perfect, I'm going out on a limb here to say this is the best I've ever had.....this coming from a coffee snob from Seattle no less. Well done folks. We had just eaten and that was the mistake of the day. The sandwiches in the glass case were piled high with fun combinations with yummy looking breads! The patron in front of me in line mentioned to me how he takes drives from Everett occasionally just to have lunch here. I will be back. In fact, I'm going to call you folks this week to see where I can buy that fabulous grind here in the city. VERY WELL DONE folks!!

Overall: Seriously, what's with the quantity and not quality? After my disappointment at Sweet Mona, I was looking for something that was delicious. On walking in, we saw a huge display cabinet of the biggest pastries I've ever seen. The cinnamon rolls were the size of my head and so were the cookies! I can't say much about the décor - I find it a little kitschy. The speed of service was incredibly slow! J went to order, whilst I waited for the restroom for at least 5 minutes. When I got back - he still hadn't ordered and he was at the front of the line! I then went to sit outside. It was a good 5-10 minutes before he appeared with "goodies". The muffins were ok in flavor, but were ULTRA-dry... I nearly choked on it! The coffee was ok - it certainly was nothing to write home about! This place was an overall disappointment.

  • Mrs C.

I've been here twice and was disappointed both times. Last time I went here I ordered a small soy latte and it was so bad that I couldn't even drink half of it. I like a lot of other coffee houses but my experience here was awful. If only there was a Stumptown on the island.

This is my coffee place of choice on South Whidbey - and there are several! Very good coffee, and some interesting and quite good sandwiches to choose from. The outdoor seating area is outstanding and always busy on a sunny weekend. If the weather isn't good, they have plenty of seating in the back. My only issue is that at times they can be a bit slow. But this is not Starbucks! (thankfully).

  • Margaret L.

The food here was unexpectedly good for what I thought was essentially a coffee shop with a small kitchen. Large menu and plenty of hearty offerings. I ordered the veggie tacos (chickpea fritters, veggies, avocado and tzatziki) which also came with black beans and slaw. It was all delicious and tasty, especially the slaw, which had a Greek twist to it. My husband ordered one of their paninis and fries. The panini was meaty and well pressed, and the fries were skinny fries, crispy and yummy. There aren't any fountain drinks, but you can buy canned Cokes. We spent about $26 for both of us, and we got plenty of food. I would definitely go back there.

This one star thing-- it hurts me to do this to a place that I've loved for awhile now. Funny how one terrible experience can do that. The history: I've been driving 40 minutes each way, several times a week to Useless Bay Coffee for awhile now-- their coffee is really that amazing. Their sandwiches are beyond amazing. Even their service (up until today) has been great. Today: I happily head in, order lunch and an Americano and settle in with my partner for (what I thought would be) awhile. Within 10 minutes (lunch was still in front of us) an employee approaches us with "We're closed now". Huh. Now, I would be completely fine with this if we were told at the counter when we ordered that all orders were to be to go as they were closing shortly-- I honestly don't think that this would have been too much to ask. I would have grabbed a coffee and gotten out of their hair, and probably elected to have lunch somewhere where I could actually enjoy it. They would have gone home on time, sans annoyed customer, and all would have been right in the world. Instead, we were rudely kicked out just minutes after sitting down. I realize that my opinion over one bitchy remark and a wasted lunch doesn't matter a lot in the history of this place, but it should. I'm not going back, and definitely wont be recommending it to anyone anytime soon. Sorry Useless Bay. I'm just not that into you any more. ps. Just noticed my name in another review-- something to do with being slightly unreasonable in my review of this place. I am loyal. I'm an awesome customer, and about 97.6% of the time I overlook things that might have others throwing a fit. I get it-- I've spent enough time in the service industry to realize that it was the last place that I wanted to be, and I've put up with customers who were unpleasant-- to say the very least. I feel that oftentimes this makes me a bit more sympathetic to the odd server or restaurant employee who may not be having the best day. However, in business (as in life) there's something called accountability. I didn't do anything to warrant being snipped at, and I feel that it was extremely off-putting. For it not to be acknowledged at all tells me that this is either business as usual, or that the staff are stressed out and unhappy. Maybe a little of each, as I've noted some common threads in previous reviews. In any case, I prefer to spend my money in a place that makes me feel good about it. Especially if I'm going out of my way to support it.

Stopped by several times during our week long stay in Langley and it was wonderful. Fantastic lattes and very friendly baristas. Great place to kick back and enjoy the island life. Completely charming in every way imaginable, just like the rest of Langley.

Would have been a five star, coffee and food were excellent. Had to wait, granted it was a Sunday morning, yet my coffee made it out and food followed intermittently, people I were with received theirs, then I had the same and it took an additional 10 minutes for my food. They had to wait on me to finish. Great music by a young string quartet in the courtyard.

I only bought beans so I can't qualify a 5-star but service was friendly and coffee was well-priced. One of the baristas is very philanthropic, and I thought it was great that they promoted that by displaying a newspaper article about him. I would frequent UBCC if I lived on Whidbey. No doubt!

Breaking up with a place that you enjoy hurts, it hurts even more when the first signs of love towards that establishment are felt. However after the treatment i received today by a Woman who works there i feel like there is little other choice. Pros: great coffee, great food, great place to take both in at. Cons: they will straight kick your ass out on the street after closing, without any heads up or warning at time of purchase. They close at 4:30 pm... Here is what happened: My partner and i were out spending the day driving around the island, we make it a habit of going to this coffee place quite often, pretty much because we love(d) it. It should be noted that we live in Oak Harbor, so it is quite an expense in time and fuel to make our way down the island in order to visit. We show up to find the place quite crowded, and because in the rational world coffee places simply do not close at 4:30 we did not even think to consider the possibility that this place was about to close down. I wait and place my order, and they ask if this is for here or to-go. I tell them that i plan to dine in, they have no problems with this. I no sooner than spend 10 min sitting down with my meal then a Woman walks up and says something to the effect of "i hate to rush you, but we are closed" whoa... I just spent almost fourteen bucks on two coffees and a sandwich and you are kicking me out???? Please note: the place was still crowded, there were still many people eating, there was not any overt signs that they were "turning the lights out" and we were well past our welcome (especially since they sold us our god damn food not ten minutes prior...). Thoughts on how it could have been handled better: 1) explain to us at time of purchase that you were planning on closing in a few min and that if at all possible we order it to-go. 2) stop accepting customers at closing time 3) let a couple of people enjoy the short amount of time they have to spend together in your lovely coffee shop, even if it means they are there 30 min past closing. At no point was it made known to us that we were eating on borrowed time, until of course the point where we were pretty much told that our asses needed to be out the door, most ricky-tick. There are plenty of places out there to explore, it was fun while it lasted UBCC but i think we should start seeing other people. On a side note, the Man with the bald head and silver glasses is a kind and polite person who i wish the very best.

Ummm coffee! Great varied food selection! Coffee is good anytime of the day and selections vary from healthy to gluttonous. Staff is friendly and really tries to take care of you..

Yes, you have to wait on a busy sunny summer weekend, but it is so worth it. Delicious coffee, foam art, beautiful building, exotic garden, live folksy music, and steps away from quaint shops in one of the most beloved island towns in puget sound.

My sweet wife and I took a weekend trip to Langley on Whidbey Island to hang out with her two friends from college. While the small Victorian town has some of the best food I've had anywhere, Useless Bay Coffee Company served me hands-down the best latte ever! Yes, that's right, I said EVER! My wife, who usually gets stressed out when I, Mr. Picky, tries a new coffee place, She was pleasantly relieved when after tasting my latte, I turned around and raised my eyebrows, gave her that "Damn, that's tasty!" look, and rushed over to give her a sip. Long story short, I had two lattes and took two bags of freshly ground beans with me. The baristas (mostly guys) were fast, efficient, extremely nice, and kept the place clean though it was busy at the time. I didn't try the food there but based on Laura S' review, I'll try that next time. To sum up, if you are ever on Whidbey Island, anywhere on the island, and picky about your latte, you simply MUST try Useless Bay Coffee Company. I highly recommend it.

Have been in Langley for 1 day and have already been there twice. Macchiato's made very well. Espresso not bitter. The one issue, which prevents me from giving them 5 stars, is the long wait to get your drinks. It took 15 minutes from time of order.

Going here for a sandwich or just a cup of coffee is a big treat. It's cozy inside when its stormy out, and the garden and landscaping make sitting outside a simple pleasure. Staff is friendly, and you can tell it's a nice place to work. Looks like they are trying out different menu items, but I haven't tried it out for dinner. I've been by when there is live music which is also great on a sunny day. A local gem for sure.

Clearly a local hotspot but I find it just average. Whidbey Commons across the street is much friendlier, and usually not as noisy or chaotic as USeless Bay. Food is not imaginative, though their drip coffee is nice and strong. Espresso drinks taste good too. Outlets seem few and far between for those looking to plug in a laptop - but maybe that's just me. All in all, this place will do the trick in a pinch but it isn't my favorite Langley coffee joint.

Really great coffee here. The food is good too. There is also a server with a british (?) accent who genuinely seemed to care whether I was satisfied with my coffee and sandwich. And I definitely was. However--in my past two trips, rollover on my order was roughly 20-25 minutes. Specifically, for one coffee and one sandwich (barely warmed). On one occasion I ordered 5 bagels to go--that took 36 minutes from the time I asked for the bagels until they were in my hand. I am not expecting corporate coffee house turnaround time--but I have been served entire meals in the time it took to get a coffee at this place. I'm not totally sure what is going on during the lag time. My brother vowed he was never returning after the bagel trip--but I haven't committed to that drastic decision yet. Yet.

Erik and Arianne, while perfection might be something many strive for in life, it's something you can't expect to sustain itself 100% of the time. I too have been coming here from the north half of the island and despite the wait time on some of my visits, (something about being on 'island time' comes to mind), I absolutely love this place. Brilliantly roasted coffee (I've yet to come by a watered down batch) and to-die-for panini's that can appeal to herbivores and carnivores alike. Not to mention, who doesn't mind a few drops or more... faaar more... of some irish liquor in their coffee in the morning? I fear that regardless of where you purchase your coffee next, if you go there enough, you'll be quick to lose interest... to just not be into them anymore after a less than satisfying experience. I'd just like to point out that sometimes the best part of a rough break-up is the reconciliation that comes afterwards. Cheers.

Excellent coffee and panini sandwiches for lunch. Also great location with outdoor seating. Beautifully landscaped. Cool place to hang out. Outdoor BBQ coming this summer.

I come here three or four times a year. Not a lot by any means but they have good food and good coffee. However I have noticed a drastic decline in customer service on my last couple of visits. Hopefully it's a temporary problem.

I got in there during the rush hour .. bummer .. saw a line formed to place the order and then people standing in the pick up session (which is just next to the cashier) for their food. The line (both lines) were moving bit by bit (at least not stalled), so I gave it a try. Lots of seating in the coffee shop (which is a plus, you don't need to wait for a table). Pastries are pretty good too, I've a gingerbread scone. They warmed it up for me and delivered to my table (pretty nice). Coffee is pretty ok. Pretty noisy. All in all, not very impressive but not bad at all. It will be nice area to take a break or grab some quite bite before heading to ferry. Not suitable if you are aiming to find a quiet island coffee shop to read.

I live on the south end of Whidbey and have started coming here for breakfast, it's good and reasonably priced. I usually get a coffee and breakfast panini sandwich. Usually its all quite good. Once, when ordering it took way too long, as if the young woman behind the counter had just turned on the grill and then waited to put my sandwich on. (It seems to me the grill should have been on way before the place opened.) Other times have been quick however, so I consider it a quirk. I like to go early, before it gets crowded, and also it can be quite noisy in there. I just tired their BBQ for dinner which is why I've downgraded my review. I was interested to try this since I'd heard good things about it. I got a chicken mole BBQ, which was good, but the pieces were pitifully small. Also the cole slaw was over-spiced with cumin, which was not to my liking. I took a few bites of the beans and these didn't taste all that good either. So good, but small main, with sides that don't taste so good.

I love Langley, though I'm sad to say that I generally only get up there once a year. (Last weekend of February for the Murder Mystery.) That said, this is my favorite spot on the island. My family will frequent many of the same shops and restaurants there in this cute little town, but our devotion to them is nothing compared to our devotion to this coffee place. They're busy and they don't go nearly as fast as Starbucks, but then you won't find the same attention to detail and dedication to the craft at a Starbucks. I've never tried any of their food, but have heard good things (and their pastries LOOK good). But their coffee is fabulous. And they make decorative swirls and hearts in the foam, which is a small reminder that the staff is putting that little extra effort into your beverage. Inside seating is...cozy...but they're opening an addition this late spring/summer, so look for that. They've added more seating outdoors since last year as well, and when the weather's nice there really is no better place to be. Go. Seriously, you guys, go and support this place, they're fabulous.

I can't drink coffee, but I hear it's divine! The reason I am rating it is because their sandwiches are DELICIOUS!!! The atmosphere is relaxing, eclectic and fun it is a great place to stop if your on Whidbey! They serve tea and hot chocolate for us non-coffee drinkers...don't get me wrong, I love coffee and theirs smell delicious just can't drink it. When the weather is warm sitting outside in the beautiful gardens is a plus too.

This coffeehouse and coffee bean roaster is beautiful inside and out. Comfortable, clean, classy, roomy indoor seating. Outdoor seating is also a pleasure with beautifully crafted metal seating and umbrellas, outdoor amphitheater, edible and lush gardens. Follow the path around to the back of the coffeehouse and you'll find a lovely little garden there as well. There is often live music inside or out. Also very kid-friendly place (I have two little ones). I come back again and again for the atmosphere, latte art, and incredible paninis. It is all quite addictive. The prices are similar to other coffeehouses in town. If you visit often enough, like me, the baristas will make a good effort to call you by name. A MUST SEE (and eat-drink) if you are on Whidbey Island.

I was in search of a quick lunch and was sadly disappointed to find out that I couldn't get a sandwich without all of the veggies that they had already put on them. Doesn't make sense to not make sandwiches to order because the extra veggies just got thrown away. If I'd wanted a premade sandwich I could've gone to 7-Eleven. Food was OK (nothing to brag about), but the attitude was like, "So what if you don't want veggies?", and who needs that kind of attitude? I don't get it when this is a SERVICE industry and service is so lacking -- guess I should've just had the coffee because they have rave reviews for that.

Love it for the lovely buildings, the beautiful garden, and the outdoor tables/structures. Perhaps my favorite outdoor cafe of all time. Good coffee although I haven't really focus on it to offer a review. Service is a bit slow, but hey you are on "island time."

A touch of class in Langley, which is fun to visit too. Since owner Des Rock opened the doors this place has been packed - and for good reason. The coffee, which is roasted on the premises is excellent, the barista's are well trained, the Italian cups are a wonderful finishing touch. But wait there's more. The food is fabulous. Des is a master at creating unique and tasty sandwich and pannini combinations from quality ingredients that keep you coming back for more (2011 - Tacos are now available too). The soups are great, and there are many other tasty looking goodies available in the case if you've got a sweet tooth. It's a pleasure to sit outside in the herb garden on sunny days (which now unfortunately due to some stupid alcohol restrictions is way too caged in, but still a good place to sit), and the cheerfully colored, back-room expansion offers additional seating inside for the winter months.

WOW! I am a California city girl used to amazing food and coffee houses and when I saw this place I was blown away. Such amazing attention to detail to make this a very comfy yet aesthetic eating, drinking and socializing experience. We went there for breakfast and had some Panini's that were heavenly! We had a big bowl of the mushroom soup on the side! FLAVORFUL!! And the coffee was so special in a sweet little cup and was the most flavorful Breve I have had in a looong time! This place makes me want to hang out there all day and socialize, eat, drink and be very merry! A must if you are on the island!

good stuff here! came here with the folks for lunch, since they LOVE this place. i had the ham and salami panini, which was great. it had all the right toppings, and just the right amout of kick! also tried a little bit of the tortellini minestrone soup, which was really good. i didn't try the coffee, but my dad loves it, so i'll have to give it a try next time. instead, i had some tea which was a bit lacking in flavor, but maybe that's how it was supposed to be... not sure. for as busy as they were, the service seemed reasonably fast for the three of us to get our food. all the prices were good, especially for what you get! definitely worth a stop here for breakfast or lunch.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
