I have been to the Axe Handle Cafe 3 times over the past year. This first time was shortly after they opened and I went with my wife for breakfast. The second I went with a friend for lunch and the third I went with another friend for dinner. I'm a VERY picky reviewer and I rarely give 5 stars for something because according to Yelp, 5 stars means that it's "as good as it gets". 4 stars means I'm a fan, 3 stars is "ok", 2 stars is "I've had better" and 1 star pretty much means "get me out of here!" So I follow that, strictly. On my first visit, I liked what they did with the space, it was something I had wanted to do for years but never got around to it. Removing the false ceiling, exposing the ducts and painting the ceiling a dark color to give you that large space feel while keeping eye levels down is perfect. Well done. However, on that first visit, it appeared nothing had been done about the acoustics problem this removal creates. My wife and I heard everything that was going on, the private conversations across the room, the dishes being washed, the clatter of employees moving around. It was loud. So loud that my wife and I couldn't hold a conversation as I'm deaf in one ear and have lost 50% of my hearing in the other. On their menu at the time, they had a frittata, but the description called it a crustless quiche. Okay? Frittata and quiche are two different things, with two different methods of preparation, which is it? I couldn't get a straight answer from my server, so I ordered The Axe. I'm a sucker for good biscuits and gravy with eggs. Unfortunately, this was just average for me. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. The biscuit left some room for desire on my palate, it was huge and flavorless. My eggs, I asked for poached. What I received, were not poached eggs. They appeared to be prepared in either a consumer level "egg poacher", which is a silicone material that you crack and egg into and float around in boiling water, or they were put into a ladle and floated in water, or they were prepared in some sort of countertop device. That's just speculation for how it was done, but I do know they were not poached using any traditional method. The entire egg was present, the yolk was visible surrounded by a large ring of egg white, almost like it was a sunnyside up, but not. A traditional poached egg is going to look like a mozzarella ball, these weren't even close. The gravy was run of the mill for me, nothing stood out and it was severely under seasoned. My coffee was tasty. Our service was mediocre, we had to call the wait person over several times to get refills on water. The local decor and focus on old Kingston is cute, I like what they are going for. My second visit for lunch, they had done some work to fix the acoustics it seems, it wasn't as noisy and much easier to hold a conversation. My friend and I split a grilled portobello sandwich. It didn't blow my socks off. The mushrooms were okay, but the mozarella was... weird and the bread was undesirable. My friend and I are both chefs she's classically trained and I'm more... out there, however we both had the same opinion about the sandwich. Could have been better. We just had water this time around and again we had to ask repeatedly for refills and it took 35 minutes to get our check after we had finished out meal. I'm not sure if they were just leaving us alone to chat or if we were being ignored on purpose. It wasn't that busy and we both made eye contact with our server several times giving the clue that we were ready to go, clear our plates and give us a check, but he looked as if he had more important things to do. My third time there with another friend for dinner. Neither of us are sure why restaurants do this, but it's rampant. Maybe we're just picky, but like my poached egg experience, you can't call a Shepherds' Pie a Shepherds' Pie if you're using beef. That's a Cottage Pie. Shepherds' don't herd cattle. Call things what they really are. Just a pet peeve of mine. Frittata is frittata, quiche is quiche. We ordered their Jerk Chicken and shared it. There's not a lot I can say about it. It was not an experience that was memorable. Bland, underseasoned, dry, plated poorly. Service was a bit better this time though. Overall, the place is okay. For the price, it should be better than okay. Service is not where I'd like to see it when I'm paying for a meal. The atmosphere is cute, acoustics still needs some work, and it lacks any intimate feel to it, no sense of privacy. I've had better, I've gone 3 times and it was consistent, but it was consistently mediocre. They also blocked my friend from being able to make comments on their Facebook page after she left her opinion, it wasn't bashing, it was an honest review with suggestions. They blocked her for it. Not cool. I wish them success, they clearly have some hard core fans, and I'd love to be one of them... But I'm not.

Great food in a charming atmosphere. It's only been open two weeks, so there are some kinks to work out, but I'm sure that'll improve with time. Our dinner was very tasty. Be sure to save room for dessert. We'll definitely be back!
