UPDATED ON 11/21/2013 - ADDED TO BOTTOM OF REVIEW I go here occasionally with my parents for sushi, and I quite like it. The food is tasty, and the little appetizer plates they put out before the entrees are ready are a delight. Prices are reasonable (most sushi rolls are in the $4-$8 range). I don't know how so many other reviewers had to wait so long to be seated, as we have never encountered that problem. Unfortunately I haven't explored the menu outside of the sushi/sashimi selection. Maybe it's time I did! Edit* I decided to change my review slightly and upgrade my star rating from 4 stars to 5. The last few times we've been in, I've noticed more about how they present their food and the restaurant as a whole, and while it was always good, I feel like it's gotten better. Today we ordered several Rainier rolls to share, and the way they arranged the roles on a large plate drew looks and comments from everyone, including the people in the booth adjacent to us, who asked us what we had ordered and complimented the appearance of the food. The quality of the food is always good, but having a nice presentation is a big plus. The employees take pride in their work as well - before our sushi arrived, we spied someone behind the sushi bar photographing some food with his phone. Given how nice it looked, I'd probably have done the same. In addition, the owner is familiar with my family and always comes out to greet us. Businesses appreciate their regulars, especially small businesses, and it's actually quite nice to be recognized and appreciated. It makes our visits that much nicer.

Come here for the fish soup - cooked table-side. This is one of the only places you can get that, in Federal Way. Otherwise, service sucks (even when it's not busy), and the other foods are expensive and probably not worth it.

Don't come here. There are so many better places for sushi in the area. We got the medium or large sashimi platter, I can't remember. The fish was not as fresh as it could have been....A little disappointing because sashimi is supposed to be uber fresh.

Horrible place! When you first walk up and inside, it feels like you have stepped back in time to a bruce lee or martial arts black and white film--the ones with the subtitles and the voice overs that dont match up to the moving lips, you know? There is a front desk there with cluttered papers and someone was charging their cell phone but there was noone there to greet customers. We didnt know whether to just walk in or to wait. There was noone at the other "desk" either and we were standing at the second part of the entrance for about five minutes looking confused. There were some guys and what I found out later was the sushi bar, but you cant tell what the hell it is because they have these huge FISH TANKS blocking the bar area. The sushi guys looked but didnt bother to leave behind the bar to come welcome us. Finally someone comes over in a rush. They sit us at a long table. We get the menu but without explanation or offers of drinks and the young guy rushes off without another word. They give us the sushi ticket and the menu, which has Korean and Japanese food. There is no explanatiopn or pictures of the sushi so that you know what you are really getting. Our first instinct is to get the family dinner. It says 18 or 19 dollars; we think yes this will be the best for our money. Three or four different people were serving us and they ALL seemed to be out of sync with each other. They were rushing around but I didnt understand why because it was not packed in there. They bring food out all at different times, which is confusing. To explain, I decided to get the teriyaki with the tempura since the family meal was 18 a person and it was just 2 of us. It comes with salad, miso soup ....here's what these people do. They bring out everything all by itself. They bring the salad and then 20 mins later, the miso soup (which the miso wasnt even broken down all the way; there were particles floating around); they bring out a small bowl of rice a while later and then wayyyy later ( i was so hungry i couldnt wait for the rest of the meal because they took so long); they bring out the teriyaki. It was big chunks of meat and the sauce was good but when i tried to chew it, it was chewy and so charbroiled that there was no point. I tried to get some more sauce besides the droplets they put on and the lady acted like she didnt understand what I was asking. We had got soda, and they bring us these cans and a cup of ice. They didnot explain that it is just a can on the menu or before we ordered. I dont even remember having water to drink. It was such a waste. We had to be in there for 2 hours waiting around for them to bring us our food. I would never recommend going there. I went to use the bathroom and the decor and lighting was beyond acceptable. Ive never seen dust gather like that before in so called established business. It only made me wonder what they REALLY do in the kitchen. Also, they had a curtain hanging up as a way to the bathroom--completely stained and dingy; what kind of place is this? Our bill came to an obscene amount and we had to witness people walking out because they hadnt gotten their food. I wish I had turned around inside of going in here. These 2 in 1 and 3 in 1 restaurants need to be shut down. My boyfriend got the shoyu ramen and they brought him all the little fishcakes and cucumbers to put in it..but they took soo long that we ate those way before they brought him the other part of the meal. They didnt even have the decency to have silverware on the table. I had to ask for a fork, which took so long before I could find someone to ask. Dont Do It!! The servers disappear and the food is not worth the wait. Oh! How could I forget the SUSHI?? We ordered the Federal Way roll and the California roll; why did it have raw fish in it...there were the sliced pieces and then the end pieces they put on the side; those end pieces were not the same part of the roll as the others. Disgusting. I dont see how they messed that up seeing that we checked off the only ones that seem suitable to eat; the only ones in which we understand the ingredients. The tempura was an excessive amount and it was greasy. They didnt have any sauces to go with it either; after awhile it made me queasy. It didnt seem to go with the rest of the meal.

Excellent Sushi! Owners are really friendly and food comes with free appetizer nibbles that are always fun and different. Love the rainbow roll and spider roll. Great sushi costs a bit, but you get what you pay for. Love to get take out. You should go here!!!

My parents took me here the other day for my birthday. I came here a couple times in my youth but I didnt remember much. We got a huge seafood hotpot, some udon and inari. I am not a huge fan of most seafood but I did eat alot of the crab and fish in the hotpot and it was very tasty, the soup was very good as well. The udon was great, Im used to $1 asian market udon so this was obviously superior in quality with fresh noodles inside. They offer a good mix of japanese and korean foods. If I lived closer to here I would frequent it more often.

Korean appetizers and Japanese food. How can you possibly go wrong? Private dining rooms are same charge as a table (just ask to be seated in one), and sashimi plates are very high quality and plentiful, as well as fairly priced.

I hate to even rate this restaurant as a 1 star. We went there with a restaurant.com certificate. When we first asked if they accept it, the waitress went to the boss to asked. Then after a few minutes, she came back and said yes. She quoted the policy for the certificate. We then ordered. After about 10 minutes, the lady owner came to us and said she will not honored the certificate. She said she will loose money if she honor it. She also said they joined the restaurant.com program by mistake. However, they are still listed at restaurant.com . Bad business. They will loose all their customers eventually for being greedy and poor management. By the way, we were almost the only one there in the restaurant at that time.... Around 6pm..... Food was not great. But not too bad either. Well it is just OK.

The worst service on the planet. The sushi chef was nice & personable and then he just vanished! I sat there for 1/2 hour wondering where ANYONE was then I saw the entire staff having dinner! Zero tip!

  • Darren D.

Meh... I can honestly say I've had better. The staff is attentive...when they remember you're there. Service was very slow and the miso they served tasted like salty water. The person joining me had sushi as well as noodles and was unimpressed. I had sukiyaki and can honestly say Kabuki in Tacoma is better. A return trip here is doubtful.

Love it here! We've been going here since I was a kid. Great atosphere. The owners are really nice and friendly. The food is delish! Must try!

Went there for dinner last night(Sunday evening). They had only a handful of people dining. Food was excellent but I had to dock the stars because the food can't make up for the slowness of the service. I was there over an hour, most of that was waiting on food. Our entrees included sushi and sashimi, however after receiving our entrees and finishing them we then waited about 10 minutes before our sushi/sashimi came out. So after we polished that off we were finished with our meal and waiting for the check. And waited, and waited...finally we got up to wait by the register.

I give Akasaka 3 stars because on both of my visits the food was inconsistent. The first time I really enjoyed the teriyaki and tempura but the second time the flavor was off and not very much sauce, meat was a bit dry. thankfully my son enjoyed it and they even made him a traditional Korean sushi not on the menu when he asked for it. Overall great service, just inconsistent food.

I have been coming here since I was 14 years old. GREAT Sashimi and Korean BBQ! The service is always good and they give a ton of food. I would recommend any of the sushi rolls and sashimi as well as the Tempura and the Blackened Cod is to die for! I have never been disappointed with there food or service. The owner is usually working at the front desk to great you. It has remained one of my favorite places to eat for 13 years.

The storefront is unassuming, but the interior is spacious and varied: vented grill booths, private rooms, sushi bar and small tables are all seating options. Went today with a friend and split 5 rolls: it was an absolute feast. They appear to keep a good selection of live, seasonal proteins in the fishtanks next to the sushi bar. Prices seemed really reasonable, the menu had a good variety of foods, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Sushi came with a marinated sprout dish, a cucumber/shrimp/seaweed salad, some sort of fried crackers and spicy pickles. All were tasty and really interesting variations on the green-salad/miso riff I've seen so often. Miso was offered when the sushi arrived, but we both declined: we were had plenty to eat. 5 rolls were a generous lunch 2 people, and all were delish. We also ordered the geoduck nigiri, which was forgotten by the server but prepared and delivered promptly upon second request. Neither of us had ever tried it, but it was in season and sounded interesting. So unique, and so much flavor! I can't use soy on my sushi, so flavor and texture are ultimate, and based on my single nigiri Akasaka will not disappoint. Next time, I will have to try the sashimi. I walked in very fond of Koharu, just down the street. I am not willing to give up on them yet, but so far Akasaka has far better service, superior prices and is at least equal in food quality. Koharu is definitely prettier, and coverall more intimate, so it may be a better location when first impressions are what count. If you are looking for freshness and quality, or to please a crowd, try Akasaka instead.

I have driven past this place for years and have never gone in. Finally did yesterday while waiting at Discount Tire next door. I was expecting Japanese only food so we walked in with our mind set on Bento Boxes. They had them, although they called them O'Bento boxes for some reason. They were pretty good and only $8 or so. Great Deal! Soup and some Banchan to start and then cooked salmon, sashimi, a couple of rolls, tempura, deep fried shrimp, marinated vegies, and teriyaki chicken and rice. Everything was pretty good except the chicken was overcooked. The place is a little funky inside with booths, a lunch counter sushi bar, and private japanese rooms with sliders. There is an out of place fountain in one end and 3 big cloudy seafood tanks which probably gave off the fishy smell. We choose to eat at the booth and we were the only ones there on a Monday at 1 pm. The booths and the private rooms had barbecues set in the table and I realized that this is also a Korean BBQ place. We will have to come try it again for dinner and try the Korean BBQ.

My wife and I have not been here in a couple years. This place is run down. We had family feat #3. Food service was down right bad, food was OK to poor. Much worse than previous years we have eaten here. The had a vacuum cleaner running though half of our meal making a racket at 6:30 PM. Should have cleaned up before dinner service. I have come here about once every 2 years for the last 20 years and I will not be going back. They need to gut this place and entirely upgrade it. I can imagine how filthy the kitchen must be after 40 plus tears in business.

This place has the worst service ever!!!! I used to live in fed way and had been there a few times. The service is terrible, there were times we waited 40 minutes before our waitress came by to take or order. I've been there with Korean friends and received outstanding service. Then when I go with American friends they act like we are not there. I even heard the waitress tell the owner that we were there before another couple the owner replied our Korean customers are more important, mind you I speak Korean and told the waitress we were eating somewhere else. My last time there my in laws wanted some sashimi. So we ordered a medium plate along with a spicy soup of cod stew. Midway through we asked the waitress for another medium plate of sashimi, after a half hour of waiting nothing! So we got up to pay and mentioned it to the owner, she goes back asks the waitress what happened? She then comes back and says that will be $80. WTF !!! No sorry no we were very busy she forgot or she's new nothing! F!#^ this place! Never ever again! The food is spotty wait staff terrible and the management is horrible! They're getting one star cause they won't let me post no star.

The food here was fantastic! Best Ahi Poke I've ever had, and everything was reasonably priced (except the Asahi and Sapporo, IMO). The complimentary Korean appetizers were nice and spicy as well. I enjoyed the pickled bean sprouts especially. For the main event, I ordered a hodgepodge of random rolls and nigiri, and I was not disappointed. The Hokkigai and Kani nigiri were my faves, as well as a spicy tuna/specialty roll with a garlic mayonnaise base whose name escapes me at the moment. I look forward to coming back to this place again and again, until I've tried it all.

Service is terrible there...the owner under staffs that place so bad that it will take 30 min just to get your menu....one time i had to go to the kitchen and ask what was going on because we waited over an hour and got nothing!!! AVOID THIS PLACE

I'd prefer to give 2.5 stars. The two of us went on a early Friday evening, hoping to find some decent sushi in Federal Way. The restaurant was pretty busy. We had a 15 minute wait for a BBQ table. The patrons were about 50% non-asian and 50% asian, most of them presumably Korean based on the language I overheard people speaking. Interestingly, there was an elderly Japanese couple sitting next to us. They seemed to be enjoying their Japanese dishes which I believe were sukiyaki and possibly an udon soup dish of some sort. They interacted with the staff as if they were regulars. They directed us to a table that was not clean, so we went back to the waiting area. The hostess seemed pretty incompetent to keep an eye on open tables in an organized fashion. Once we sat and waited about 10 minutes our waitress finally showed up with some tea. We ordered two appetizers: the ahi poke and a sake-miso marinated black cod filet. These appetizers came out very late, one of them after our entrees. We ordered various nigiri sushi as well as Kalbi. The ahi poke was excellent; a very large portion with very nice fish and excellent seasoning. It was just a huge amount of ahi. I'm not a poke expert (yet) but I could not fault the flavors nor the freshness of the fish. The black cod was excellent. If you've had the miso marinated black cod collar at Maneki, it is very similar, but the version at Akasaka has a pronounced sake flavor that does well to cut through the richness of the miso and butteriness of the cod. It too was char broiled. My kalbi was cooked in the kitchen. I had wanted to prepare it myself at the BBQ table but they told me that is only done for two or more people. OK, I can't fault them for that, but I was never told this policy when I placed my order. Regardless, the kalbi itself was quite good and well done, a large portion of nice quality meat over a bed of onions on a sizzling plate. The marinate was quite noticeable but not overpowering. Our sushi was much better than what we expected for sushi in Federal Way. The O-toro tuna was the biggest let down actually; thin slices of less than flavorful otoro. The fat was there but not the flavor, if you get what I mean. The oyster nigiri was very good and fresh, with enough oyster juice preserved to drip into the rice below. The octopus was rather tender (not amazing, but above average) and had a good octopus flavor...it is rare that the flavor stands out for me with octopus. The yellow tail was OK. Halibut was nice and I believe served with sisho leave in the nigiri. Overall, the sushi was much above average for Federal Way, but not outstanding compared to other sushi I have had. I should also mention that the price for the sushi was very reasonable and we got two nigiri pieces per order instead of one. At $5 for two otoro nigiri that is not bad at all for price. The banchan were sparce and I was not impressed. The cabbage kimchi was pretty average. The cucumber kimchi was a solid B. There was a bean sprout type that was average as well. That is it it for the banchan...just three or four types that were average. In a city with dozens of Korean places, this is not acceptable. The banchan at the pal-do world restaurant, tobang BBQ, kokiri, and Chang Ahn Jung are MUCH more varied (you get 6-10 types automatically) and much more imaginative and tasty. So I thought Akasaka was poor in this area. So sounds good so far, right? Well, I admit the food, in particular the poke, black cod, and sushi was well priced and tasty. The Kalbi was average for the Federal Way area and the banchan was below average. Were Akasaka loses points is in cleanliness and service. There was a fly bothering us and the neighbors throughout the meal. The drink menu that sits at the end of the table was filthy and unfit to be kept on a dining table. The waitress, while quite nice when we saw her, was extremely inattentive (never asking if I needed a refill on the beer, not taking away our empty banchan dishes, not asking if we needed any more banchan or drinks, not bringing out our poke APPETIZER until AFTER our entrees arrived...) It was not just us...the Japanese couple next to us had to repeatedly flag down their waitress to get service as well. I've eaten and about 75% of the Korean places in Federal Way and this place had the worst hostess and service of them all. So its a mixed review. The sushi was better than expected. The korean food was average. Banchan below average. Service and hostess poor. Poor cleanliness. I think we'd go there again for good value sushi takeout and that is about it. By the way, try tobang BBQ a new KBBQ place about two miles south on Pac Hwy. They just opened and their KBBQ and banchan are outstanding.

I've been eating here for the last 5 years now. My kids love this place and always looks forward to coming here. We eat here so much that the owners gives us a gift during the holidays. Its by far my favorite Korean Restaurant around. I eat at a few spots here and there but when it comes to entertaining friends and family this is our spot. The service is great. We are always treated like friends when we come here. The food is amazing. And if you like Korean dining you owe it to yourself to come here. I rate this restaurant for the Korean Cuisine and not for the Japanese though they serve both. Me and my wife do eat alot of Sushi but not here. Its not bad, dont get me wrong. But we come here for only one thing, the Korean food. :) If you've never eaten at a Korean Restaurant before then your in for a treat. You always start of with plenty of appatizers on the house. From different type of Kimchee to a variety of vegitable dishes or sometimes fish / seafood appetizers. You would normally get about 4-6 little plates of goodness before your main meal comes. If you come enough, the waiters will start spoiling with other tasting. Once they gave me Conch. The meat was sliced in nice portions with the huge shell decorating the plate. Thats as first for me. I've had snails before but never this. It was a nice experience. This is the type of hospitality you will expect from here. We always start off with Spicy Tofu Soup which is the most popular. It comes in different flavors from beef, pork, and seafood. There are some Korean Restaurants out there that makes there Tofu Soups there main dish like how Pho is to Vietnamese. Then the grill! You need to make sure when you come here to eat off the grill. Most tables have a grill right in the middle of the table. You order different types of meats from Beef Ribs, Spicy Pork slices, to Prawns and Chicken. You then start placing the meats on the grill and start cooking away. This is always the highlight of any Korean meal we have for dinner. When the meat is done we normally wrap it in Lettuce and dip it in a bean paste and sesame oil which just compliments every bite. Just writing this is making my mouth water. All in all I highly recommend this place. Bring some friends or family. Grab a table with a grill and enjoy the great food. You will not regret it! If your are bringing a group of more then 6, there are bigger rooms with grills in them. I brought a group of 12 once and we where all able to sit in on room with a sunken floor which was fun for everyone. Do make reservations if your party is bigger then 6. Have fun!

Second favorite sushi place, behind Susha Tama in Tacoma being numero uno. Love the lunch and appetizers that come along with it... reasonable to average priced. Love it here, super quiet, laid back, and great dim lighting.

This is undoubted the worst restaurant I've encountered in years and the owners have no understanding of customer service. The food was horrible starting with the poncon (Korean side dishes) which were all very old and had a soured taste. The main dishes proved to be even worse especially an expensive fish soup ($43) which was undercooked with the center of the fish still frozen. When I went to pay I made my complaint to the owner. She refused to give back my change immediately and called her husband from the kitchen who in turn used his cell phone to take my picture. Absolutely avoid this place -

Akasaka such a fun name to say right? So fun to say that I am in fact sorry to give them such a poor review. As you walk in to this establishment you see the many awards they've been given hung proudly on the wall. "Best Sushi of Federal Way, Kent & Auburn" I have to agree. It is the best that I've had in this area...(there are 3 more places that I plan to try in the coming months.) On rare occasions my mama takes me out to dinner and tonight she wanted sushi. To Akasaka we went! This isn't the first time we've been here, but it's probably the last time I'll go. The place is rather large. I can't tell if it's the lighting or all the dark wood, but there is something sort of gloomy and dingy about this restaurant. However, there are some cool rooms for larger parties complete with the "take off your shoes" experience. The service is pretty good. The young waitress was courteous and prompt the whole evening. I ordered a combo with tempura and a california roll. MmM MmM good. The California roll was rolled really large. It was delicious; I can never get enough of those. With my tempura combo I expected her to ask me if I wanted raw or fresh sushi. Sounds like it would be the same, but she didn't ask me. As a result, I ended up gifting my mom most of my meal because a lot of it was raw tuna. Not my style. I'm not a huge fan of raw sushi. Sorry, I know that sort of places my review in some kind of sushi twilight zone, but I only like the vegetable rolls and deep fried soft shell crab rolls/wraps. The tempura sort of disappointed me. There wasn't much variety in the vegetables. I had too many starchy potatoes and sweet potatoes, one mushroom, two huge onions and one small itty bitty piece of brocolli. I suggest they add more vegetables to their tempura game otherwise they might get more reviews like this one. The complimentary Miso soup was excellent, cured a headache that I had for hours that day. My mom ordered a gigantic bento box style meal. She seemed to enjoy it, but it was too much for her, so she took a lot of her food home, but it wasn't appetizing enough for her to finish it. I'd love to give them an A-OK review, but I only give those to restaurants that I plan to patronize again. Akasaka....I still like to say your name.

I've known this place for a long time and it has been a while since I ate here..seriously about 10 years ago. The reason why I went here was because my friend decided to take his mom for Mother's day here and I just tagged along with my family. To make the long story short...the sushi was 'ok'. That's the thing about sushi, it's not like it magically has this fantastic taste to your tastebuds like other foods like marinated meat and such, but to me sushi just tastes pretty much the same everywhere I go. Then we ordered spicy pan fried octopus with noodles. It was blend. But the part that ruined it was we ordered 2 big sushi platter and two spicy pan friend octopus which all came out to be $140.00!! Trust me, the portions were small. In any case, I prefer other Japanese sushi restaurants anyday.

I really enjoy this place when I want some awesome Japanese. It is a great place for groups with private rooms. The services is fast, and all around wonderful. I really enjoy all the little appetizers they bring you before your meal. I guess you would call them that. And I love their Chicken Katsu. It is perfectly cooked, huge and I mean H-U-G-E amount of both Katsu and Rice. I recommend this to anyone who loves good Japanese. Can't go wrong with this place!

Wow, You never realize how many restaurants you've been to until you log into yelp and you see the default restaurant your family goes to whenever you go out to eat staring at you in the new reviews box. My dad is like a permanent fixture in the bar here. It's where he goes to eat, have drinks with friends, and to relax. Whenever we have family in town we inevitably get one of those side rooms where you have to sit on the floor...hate that...end up with cramps in your legs and back while your feet fall asleep...but anyways. Sushi here is good and the Sashimi is even better. Shabby interior that could do with some remodeling and a good wipe down, but typical for a Korean owned restaurant. The concept of a professional waiter or server is unknown in Korean circles. Most of the ladies that work here have been doing it for years, but there's a secret to getting quick service at Korean restaurants. You gotta be able to raise your voice a little and say "Yuh-kee Yo!" or "Juh-kee Yo!". Make sure you make eye contact after you yell and they'll rush right over. It might be outside of your comfort zone to raise your voice a little, but when in rome right? That said this is a seafood restaurant. Go with the Sashimi. If you're cheap and want to get a bigger bang for your buck go with Sushi. I am not really a fan of Maewun Tang (spicy fish soup), but others who are fans have said that theirs is the best. It's okay as far as I'm concerned, but once again I am not really a fan of the dish. Korean BBQ? Other items? I dunno, I've only had Sashimi and Sushi here. Haven't experienced the nail in the rice or feel the service is all that bad. If you want Sushi in Federal Way (limited options) this place is the best place for it in town.

$18 sushi platter with the worst spicy tuna roll I've ever had. The tuna was slimy and was evidently covered in hot sauce to hide its lack of freshness. The bowl of rice that accompanied my son's katsu was obviously bottom-of-the-pot burnt and reheated too often. A real shame. I used to like this place back when I lived nearby. In fact, I had such nice memories of coming here that I chose to have dinner with my son here instead of at any of the Korean places nearby, when I really wanted Korean food. Never again.

By far the best place for Japanese food ... or at least the best place in Washington not named Nishino. The sushi here is very good but if you come here just for the sushi then you're really missing out. Truth be told, you can probably get comparable sushi at any decent neighborhood joint and, of course, if you're in Seattle proper there are oodles of options. No, the reason you come to Akasaka is to try Japanese food in the broadest sense of the word: broiled fish cheeks, udon, about a dozen different sorts of fish stews, etc. Whenever I'm in the area, I always make an effort to get Akasaka because there are dishes that you will never find in Seattle (or most anywhere else in the Puget Sound area). For the raw-fish lovers out there, go and try the Hwae Do Bap. It's basically chirashi gone wild. Best thing on a hot day.

Everytime I go here, I make sure I wear sweat pants because my pants go up 3 sizes each time, which just goes to prove how good the food is. If you are having trouble deciding between whether you're craving Japanese or Korean food, this is the place to go because they offer both and both are equally scrumptious. Pick either to sit in a tatami room or at a table, but make sure you get a table with a grill so that you can mend your own Korean BBQ. I recommend getting the kal bi but in general all the meat they offer is tender and perfectly marinated. The side dishes that come with the Korean BBQ are also very good, so make sure you don't get full of those before the main course comes =) The sushi and sashimi are also equally as delicious and fresh. The only reason why I don't give this place 5 stars is because service tends to be a bit slow since the place is usually packed. However, they have little bells at each table that you can ring if you need assistance...nifty indeed.

Akasaka is a good restaurant, both their Korean and Japanese food are good, not the best but reliably good. It is a popular restaurants with Korean customers and almost always busy, any day of the week. If you have time try their hot pot on the table(~ shabu shabu), it's good. Their sushis are quite good as well. If you eat there they give you a lot of side dishes while you wait like kimchi etc.. and they are very good and nice to have while you wait. The only downside of this place are that it is often too busy and they sometimes seem to forget about you. On the other hand if it's too busy there are many other alternatives within walking distance, such as Anhabi and Indochine.

Akasaka is a bad place to eat period. You're wasting your money on poor quality and awful tasting food. The medium sized sashimi plate we ordered came with old radish, dry tuna, and worst of all, half of the assortment was the same kind of fish. There's nothing special with the miso, no tofu or anything, and it smelled of chlorine. The banchan (little dishes to eat with rice) was old and the wrong kind of sour, and the main korean dish (a type of jungol) was eh... mediocre. Not only is the food bad, but they lack customer service, which is a big no-no for me. Oh yeah, the hand towels they gave us to clean our hands with left our hands dirtier with a foul stench. Yuck.

Portion size is big here and sushi is average. Side dishes are good. Average price is $10 for dish. Sometimes service is slow.

This place is always busy when I go there. Their sushi/sashimi is fresh and bomb.com . Their haemul jjigae and other fish jiigaes are SO GOOD! Last time I was lucky enough to get it when they just got some fresh ones and it melted in my mouth! I haven't tried any of their korean food, so I would not be able to rate anything on that. Their customer service can get a little hectic when they are really busy, but it is usually very good. The interior is great also, they have lifted floor rooms for guests who want to sit in an "authentic" style eating room. I highly recommend this place

I gotta tell you a story about this place. I've always enjoyed coming to this place because of a. good food, b. good service, and c. large selections of food. my parents love coming to this place. BUT One day, my bf and I went to go eat Panbroiled Spicy Octopus. It was too chewy for me, but oh well, at least my bf liked it. About 2/3 way done, my bf chews on something hard and spits it out. Guess what he found!? A staple. YES.. the metal staple that's used to 'staple' the papers. We tell the server and she looks at us suspiciously and asks 'you just found it now?' Why does it matter if we found it now or found it 10 min.ago? She took it to the kitchen and comes back out saying there's nothing that could have staples in. I told her it's probably from the packaging or other paperwork they have. We looked at her disgusted, and she told us that she'll take it out of our tab. This happened during the summer and I never went back. I hope to go back one day, but i just hope that nothing like this will ever happen again.

i forgot about this place! i would rather go to Mirak for my korean bbq, but akasaka has really yummy ban-chan (the side dishes served with all korean food) and more importantly, their sushi is FRESH! i've yet to try the korean fare, although i did have the kim-chi ji-gae (kim-chi stew) and it was okay, but their sushi is truly the best i've had up here so far. service is okay. it's best if you're actually korean cuz they seem to pamper the korean guests a bit more (it's not a racial thing -- it's a cultural comfort thing, cuz all the waiters are korean). and they do get pretty busy so the wait can get a little long, but it's definitely worth it! if you like sushi, and not just good sushi, but GREAT sushi, you need to try this place.

I come back to this place for one thing and that is the spicy fish soup. Not a fan of many of the other dishes, but the soup is made really well here with good quality fish. Also, I really like the fish collar, or cheek side dish. Not sure what part of the fish it is, but it's really good.

Decent food. Its not one of those places that you want to regularly go back to. Once in awhile is ok since their sushi and food isn't the best...its just decent. If you're willing to drive out of the Federal Way area to get better sushi, definitely do so, but if you're being lazy and need a sushi fix...akasaka would do. Or I'd recommend going to the foodcourt across the street at H-MART. It has a better/fresher sushi stand.

Hands down my favorite sushi restaurant! Last night I drove from the Queen Anne area of Seattle all the way to Federal Way, Washington just to go to Alasaka. I'm never disappointed the fish was so fresh and also she was outstanding plus they give you little Korean dishes like kimchi fishcakes yum! They have regular tables, Japanese style tables, and a great sushi bar. Don't miss out if you're in the area.

I don't know if I just wasn't feeling sushi today or what but I just wasn't that impressed. I had two rolls and they both did not taste right. When I walked in no one saw me or even cared to seat me. I had to walk around to the kitchen area and ask if they were open. It's so hard when I have been to some pretty fantastic places and I feel like every sushi place should be at that level... I hate writing bad reviews...

This is my go-to for Japanese and Sushi in Federal Way! I love their food, the rolls and sushi are delicious. They serve small appetizers before hand. It varies every time. I think the service is decent, not super fast or overly attentive but all the employees are very nice and I've never seen them busy so I believe everything is made to order and that's why the food doesn't come out super fast. Never too long I'd a wait though. The other thing I love is the price, much better than some of the neighboring sushi joints, on top of that...they're big rolls! I've never had an issue polishing off several sushi rolls, but even with a group, I almost never am able to finish it all. When I do, I practically need to be carted out of their. Also, the overall appearance is slightly run-down but very cute still. The bar looks nice, they have the booths with a hot plate in the middle and even private rooms with floor seating which I've never used but look fun for parties! If you're even thinking about trying Akaska, just do. They have an extensive menu far beyond just sushi and rolls!

Not too bad of a spot here! I've seen this place for years but never made it in until recently. We came here for a family dinner and my expectations weren't that high going in but I am glad to say I was pleasantly surprised lol. First off it's real easy to find and there's a lot of parking both in the front and in the back lot so that made it nice. When I walked in it was what I had pictured, typical old school Japanese themed restaurant with a little late 1980s feel to it. Well equipped with Tatami rooms, cocktails, local regular customers, and an abundance of Asian decor. The menu has some good choices with a mix of both Japanese and Korean dishes along with some nice sushi options. What impressed me was the variety of food, this wasn't just another teriyaki joint, they have some good traditional meals here which was cool to see. Their drinks were strong and service was fast and friendly. So far my experiences have been really good, sushi has been fresh and my food has tasted consistently tasty for both the Japanese and Korean choices. Prices are pretty good here too, nothing crazy expensive like some other places in the area.

This is a place that's been on my list of places to eat at for sometime. My sister and I just decided randomly that yesterday night, was the night. And oh are we coming back for sure. Seeing the menu online before we left, I was already excited and overwhlemed with all the choices to choose from. You got choices like the Philadelphia Sushi rolls to Bul Go Gi to sashimi and a load of teriyaki dishes. The menu is quite colorful and I feel that there will always be something for anyone to eat and be satisfied. The servers was friendly and the service was speedy. We had the Sukiyaki and it was very good. I had a couple of Sushi rolls. Can't ever go wrong with that. I'll come back just to make a meal with sushi haha. This is also a restaurant that isn't stengy with portions. Order the appetizers when you got 2 or more people wih you. I totally have to try eating in the tatami room (^_^) I'm coming back to try something different everytime haha.

Really - I'd like to give them a 3 1/2 stars - knocked them down mostly for their service. The only complaint with service is getting the food can be slow. Otherwise, for those that say their check comes too slow or waiter doesn't come by often, I just discovered they have a service button on the booths to call them! All the food I've had has been great except for one type of roll (didn't like the topping on it). Can't seem to remember the name of it, sorry! My top two favorite types of food is sushi and korean food which is why I like this place and would keep coming back here! Been here twice and I've had their bibimbap, seafood pancake, and a large selection of their sushi rolls and sashimi!

Akasaka is like the sure and steady restaurant that always delivers in Federal Way! The owners and staff are extremely friendly! Love this place! Best sushi, Japanese, and Korean food in town!:)

Best sushi in town.. I have been a long term customer of Lee the owner. He remembers what you order... . is very creative.. and has Toro. You get side dishes of kimche and other appegizets. He has a full service bar and a full.menu of Japanese and Korean food. More expensive than the all you can eat places but we'll worth the quality and not having a hassle when asking the other places to customize. ..

The spicy Korean soft tofu soup and the seafood pancake ! Although it took a little longer then expected , the soup was worth the wait . Updated 031714 I came back today and the service was amazing , of course had the spicy seafood tofu soup and tried the sushi and you have to try the butter yaki . Delicious !

Hands down best sushi in the area. Always fresh and very relaxed atmosphere. Good traditional sushi unlike many chains that add a bunch of sauces and toppings. The staff will let you hang out and socialize and I've had many work lunches here. My favorite by far.

We've driven by this place probably a hundred times but never gave it a second look. We were recently trying to find a new place to eat and I noticed the reviews and the Yelp deal, so we figured we'd give it a try. I'm really glad we did because the food was amazing. We both had the bento with chicken teriyaki and the black cod. Everything from the starter salads (my 10mo old loved the sweeter one that I think was tofu, but not sure), to the miso soup, to the sushi and sashimi, we were quite happy. The portions were extremely generous and everything was good quality. I really want to try more of their sushi and sashimi the next time we go. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of the service. They weren't busy, yet someone only came by once to refill our water outside of delivering the food. If service improved, this would definitely be a 5 star stop for us.

Akasaka has some of the best sushi I have had in kent / federal way. It's very fresh and very tasty. The best part is it's affordable. Simply good sushi.

Not impressed with service at all. I'm a huge believer in costumer service being key to an enjoyable meal anywhere you go. We were sat away from regular tables, but next to a larger party which made no sense. The person who sat us just set the menus down and walked away... Didn't say anything. The large party we were next to was getting ready to leave but there was a loud argument with the manager that we overheard and it really put a damper on our dinner. I got a water and it was never refilled. My boyfriend got a beer and was never asked if he wanted another one nor a water. So the second half of our meal we didn't have anything to drink. We were never checked on once we received our food either and it took 20 minutes until my boyfriend had to get up and ask for boxes and the check. I'm pretty sure we were just forgotten, but the other tables in the actual dining room were getting a lot of attention from our server. The food was probably 4 out of five stars which is the only reason I gave this review 2 stars. Chicken yakisoba was good, but not great. Same with the sushi. (Cali roll, spicy tuna, Philadelphia roll, Ichiro, and tuna wrap). I've had much better food and the service was just terrible. Will not be going back there, bad from start to finish.

  • KT E.

This is cool ! They have shabu shabu and Korean BBQ and sushi! I haven't tried it all but I intend to! What I had was sushi and it was decent

    (4)
  • Julia Y.

The yakisoba was flavorful, but I would've preferred more spicy so I asked for Sriracha sauce on the side :) Portions are plentiful, so come hungry. Really good value if you purchase the groupon. The lunch prices are a lot more affordable which cuts off at 2:30pm.

  • H L.

The food is decent I guess. It was more about the quantity with their Bento and kid's meals, but the way the menu is sorted, it forces you to order in combos that you may not be interested in. The one star is for the fact that they charged a 30% tip amount on my check when I wrote down 15%. Not cool!!!! If you ever use your credit card here, check your statements!

  • Brandon B.

Wish I could give no stars. We show up at 3pm no one there to greet us and we have to seat ourselves at the bar. Then the waitress comes over and says the chef hasn't showed up. WTF?! That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Way to go guys!

    (1)
  • Terrene R.

Very friendly lady greeted me and was helpful when I picked out Sushi rolls to go. I used a half price coupon I purchased online which was nice. The rolls were just ok. I expected some special sauces with the rolls but only got wasabi, soy packets and pickled ginger. Sushi was alright but I have had fresher. The extensive menu and great service would make me go back to try the place while dining onsite. Maybe the sushi rolls would be more exciting then.

  • Brian S.

When I walk into a restaurant, I want to know a.) whether I should seat myself or wait, b.) where the menus are (if they're not at every table), c.) a short wait for my food, especially if the restaurant isn't particularly busy, d.) clear communication with the waiter/waitress, and e.) great food. Unfortunately, I went zero-for-five here. I hovered near the entrance for a couple of minutes or two before I was seated. Upon reaching my table, I looked at the simple laminated sushi menu in front of me -- featuring pictures of sushi, with no prices -- and wondered if the place had combinations or other dishes. After sitting for maybe three minutes, I wandered around until I found a batch of yellow to-go menus. I took one back to my table just as my waiter was arriving with a bound copy of the full menu. By then, I'd prepared myself to just order sushi, so I filled out a sushi list. Nowhere on the paper did it say anything to the effect of, "If you write a 1 next to an item, you'll get two." So I ordered maybe 14 pieces of fish, and when the waiter helped up the paper and asked me something I didn't understand, I weakly nodded. Big mistake. The banchan was a welcome appetizer -- this place is a mix of Japanese and Korean fare -- but it didn't stop me from working up an even-bigger appetite as I waited more than 20 minutes for my sushi to arrive. When it finally arrived, it looked fantastic. I wondered where the oysters I'd ordered were but thought little of it. I dug in, and the quality of the fish was adequate. Not great, but OK. Then the sushi kept coming. And kept coming. I wondered if I was receiving someone else's order before realizing that it was twice the order I'd expected to receive. To be fair, I didn't ask to return it, as I figured I could refrigerate the extra sushi at home and that the miscommunication had been at least partly my fault. The food didn't make me want to throw up, but the bill nearly did. I'd expected to spend $30-$35; instead, I paid $81 ($68 plus a $13 tip). Again, I'm partly to blame if I ordered sushi incorrectly, as I always go for combos instead of using a la carte menus. Still, removing the misunderstanding from the experience would add maybe half a star. There are too many decent sushi options nearby to justify coming here.

We stopped by for lunch and I order the hwedupbap (sashimi over rice, veggie and pepper sauce). It was pretty disappointing. The fish was fresh and alright, bu the balance of everything else was off. I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I haven't been here for dinner in over 10 years so I can't really comment on that.

I'll just give the rating from 1 to 5. 5 is the best. Service: 4.5 (Although the waitress was bit too enthusiastic, kind of annoying. I wasn't very annoyed, I understand that she was trying to be friendly, but my boyfriend and his friend thought she was kind of rude to be interrupting us few times in our conversations. Just because we're Korean like her. She seems like a cool person though. I like how she looked like she had a lot of energy around her, so I was comfortable. Sometimes it's best not to be too friendly because it will just freak people out. I didn't hate the waitress though.) Interior: 5/5 (Lovely and beautiful. They had oriental picture frames, indoor waterfall garden, cozy place to dine. It felt like homely, but in oriental way.) Food: 3.5/5 (I guess you can say the food wasn't all that great. It was still okay to eat. It wasn't that horrible. Or it wasn't like amazing. I ordered California rolls and it kind of had a bland taste. It was alright though. I really liked their miso soup though and their tea was okay. My boyfriend's friend didn't like his tonkatsu aka port cutlet that much though. I ordered the chicken yakisoba and I liked it, but my boyfriend didn't like his beef yakisoba. He said that he noticed too much oil in his food and said it was unappetizing. They serve both Korean and Japanese food, so that's a plus!) Exterior: 3/5 (It looked like a small restaurant, but I loved the creativity of the windows.) Music: 1/5 (I was shocked... why on earth would you turn on pop music at a very good oriental interior designed restaurant? I was very disappointed. I mean I don't mind listening to American pop music, but at a Japanese/Korean themed restaurant? I was hoping oriental, peaceful music. Not Katy Perry.... or rap music, wtf?) Tip: When you enter the restaurant, you have to look for the server. She was kind of not there. It wasn't even busy either. I think they should hire another person to look out the door and greet customers.

  • Silvia L.

The owner always has a smile on her face. She seems so genuine! The food is amazing. You don't expect to have all the food to be good with a restaurant that has a lot of variety of dishes but this restaurant is different. Every dish is made freshly by hand and you can definitely tell it's a higher quality of food. They have a lot of private rooms which is great for dates or even large group parties. The atmosphere of the place is really calming and beautiful.

I only went here because of coupons and deals. Now I know why they have deals going on, because they don't have enough costumers and they want to promote their business. I only been there for 3-4 times. I like their desert that comes with meal you eating and a tea that is weird tasting(I told myself, if this tea is almost weird/unusual tasting, then that mean its good for you/healthy) what ever taste bad is healthy. I tried salmon teriyaki, sashimi(assorted raw fish) and I wasn't impressed by it. Last time I went there I decided to go for sushi bar(I like sushi a lot). I ordered Dragon roll $11, tiger roll $11 and rainbow roll $9. One of those three the best was... rainbow roll, then tiger roll and last one you know what. The guy who was making sushi was great at customer service and friendly. The (raw)sushi on display looked old and that make me think not so good about sushi I am eating. I would come here again only if there is another deal going on. Other then that I have a better places that I can eat sushi at.

The food is fine. But you have A LOT of options for Korean food in Federal Way and there is better quality Korean food elsewhere. But the big reason you want to skip AKASAKA is because of the service. They are practically annoyed that you've stopped in for dinner. I've been here twice (I thought the first time was just a fluke). They honestly would rather not have customers. It's ridiculous.

  • Steve C.

Went in on a weekday for lunch and ordered a beef teriyaki and sushi combo. Was given hot tea instead of water, which I didn't mind and tasted good. Before my main meal arrived, I was given bean sprouts, zucchini, miso soup, and cucumbers as an appetizer. This was a pleasant surprise as i just expected a little bowl of soup. The beef in the teriyaki was an actual steak that was cooked to my liking, instead of the cheap flakes of low-grade beef that other places serve. The rice was fluffy and the salad was plentiful with good dressing. The teriyaki alone was enough to impress me, but the few pieces of nigiri and tuna roll were just as good. The meal cost about the same that some other places charge for much less food and lower quality. Service was average and the inside had a cool layout. Definitely a unique experience and I would return for sure.

Hmmm...is it Japanese? Is it Korean? Well, it's both! You can eat some Korean food and also order some sushi and rolls as appetizers. We had the spicy seafood stew and it was good but not great. Parking lot is big, restaurant is big, and service was good for me at least.

  • Mia C.

arrived for an early dinner - 5:30pm - there were perhaps 4 other couples in the whole place. we ordered appetizers, and they wanted our dinner selections at the same time. here is how the food was brought to us . first the salad .. my dinner, a few minutes later the miso soup, a few minutes later the appetizer my husband ordered. quite a while later an order of sushi I ordered. then my husbands dinner and finally the appetizer I ordered. So my suggestion would be to order appetizers and wait to order your dinner until you get them. the food was great, and there was a lot of it.

I really really wanted to like this place, I had read so many good things I decided to try it myself. I ordered a spider, California, and futomaki roll. The spider roll was not okay!! It was fried so hard and burnt, I wonder when the last time they had changed the oil was. I also ordered the Chicken Kurage, they were okay. The service was great though, and they even gave complimentary side dishes and tea, over all I want to give it another chance maybe the chef was just having a bad day

Been coming here for years. Excellent Sushi... Lee is awesome. Makes custom requests as usual. Very fresh sashimi. Korean fod is above average. When it gets busy as in many restaurants service can suffer. Kim chi is fresh. All in all a very good experience

This place is really nearby. I love it, their Unaju is good and the portions are nice for the price. Consistently tasty and they still focus on presentation(at least with the rolls) when you order takeout.

found this place opposite the Hmart. was looking for something different. first I thought it was just Japanese but no it's also Korean! Exterior is nothing eye catching, has plenty of parking. Interior was nice though. I think the fishtank contains all the fresh seafood! waterfall in the back and bathroom was clean (which is always nice) There are rooms on the side if you like to take your shoes off and sit on the floor to eat, there is a hole so you don't have to sit in lotus position during your meal. I ordered bi bim bap and some sashimi. Sashimi was very tasty, fresh and good size. Bi bim bap was good and I got my very extra crispy rice from the hot pot.....love the crispy rice. Service was just right and price was decent and about average. will definitely go again!

I visit several times a year when I get to Seattle for business along with our local clients. Not sure what everyone is complaining about from the other reviews, but they always take care of their regulars (even as infrequent as I show up). Maybe the others ought to create some loyalty, spend some money, and enjoy vs looking for reasons to complain. It's a smaller operation and family friendly, it's about slow and good, not mass production. I hear Blue C sushi with the conveyor belt serves those people better?

Just went there for dinner and had awesome food. Fresh sashimi and shabu shabu. You can get so much variety at this restaurant and quality food. Our favorite Japanese restaurant. But also they have great Korean food and the side dishes are delicious too. They have the best Seafood hotpot too! Live shrimp, live Uni (seasonal), live little octopus (seasonal). Only place I know that you can get so many fresh seasonal food.

Akasaka is the best sushi I've found in the Seattle area. Its a great restaurant overall as well. I always sit at the sushi bar. Over the times I've gotten to somewhat know Mr. Yi (sp?) and Brian and they're both good company as they make your order right there. The sushi is just insanely good, but so is sooo much other stuff. The poki is probably my favorite thing in the whole menu. Made just like it is in Hawaii with the ogo seaweed that gives it that saltiness and the raw onion. Gawd dahhhm its mad tasty! I also really like the tuna collar. Its a big piece of broiled collar served up with some sort of hoisin sauce or something. As far as sushi goes, all of it is good. I think I've had at least one of everything on their sushi menu. Just get your favorite, you can't go wrong. My favs are the sashimi unagi, toro, and tako. But some of the crazy ones like the Rainier roll and Ichiro roll are good too. The Rainier roll is HUGE! They have a decent selection of sake and soju. We usually get a couple beers while we're there. They're the ubiquitous selection of Japanese and Korean beers like Hite, Kirin, OB etc etc... The only thing about Akasaka is you have to be prepared to drop at least thirty bucks per person. Maybe twenty if you're not that hungry or don't get any drinks...

Great sushi, and a plethora of choices. Never have had a bad meal yet. The staff is slow and not very attentive, but the food more than makes up for it.
