Ok! I take full responsibility for ordering the ostrich steak. I simply like trying new foods so I tried. The flavor was good and it came medium rare as ordered, but so tough I figure that ostrich walked from Australia to Vermont! The wife's "surf" on the "turf and surf" was two less-than-jumbo, butterflied shrimp overcooked to a rubbery texture and "stuffed" with something exceedingly tasteless. The "turf", however, was relatively tender and done well. The half-dozen Malpeque oysters as an appetizer were, cold, seemingly fresh and on the half- shell, but the condiment served with them was overpoweringly vinergary. I, personally, don't know why anyone would put anything on an oyster if you truly love them and the brine they come in. We were offered wine multiple times and I assume their list is extensive, but a fine wine list does not a fine restaurant make. At least not for us on that evening.

WInfield's Bistro is a special treat in Stowe, with outstanding wine list (Wine Spectator Award) and dozens of wine by the glass. It's the finest local example of new American, with some outstanding seafood and meat entrees: duck, cornish hen, snapper, salmon, venison, rack of lamb, Angus beef. Sides were just plain elegant, asparagus and mixed veggies were seasoned with delicate herbs, starches were all over the top, as well: breads, pasta, or potato dishes. It's expensive, but an outstanding splurge, and there were a couple of specials from a fixed price selection. However, a restaurant this good encourages me to sample an extra glass of wine, to try the dessert, to have an after dinner snifter. In other words, the specials still add up with all the bells and whistles. The dessert menu was amazing, too, by the way, accompanied by a large selection of sweet wines, cordials and bottles not easily found. Service was graceful and observant, just like in the finest restaurants. I've eaten there in the summer, and both times they were fairly uncrowded. I hope the winter crowds fill the place. I'll find out when I return to Stoweflake, where they are located. By far the best meal I've had in Stowe.

This was the worst restaurant experience I can possibly conceive of. Please keep in mind that my brother threw up in my wine glass at dinner just two days before. My family (5 of us) came here on Christmas Day. They provided a four course prix fixe menu. Our waiter appeared to be in his early 20s and used the words "awesome", "sweet" and "dude" while taking our order. My stepmom asked if she could just get a vegetable plate since she is a vegetarian. It's fine if they weren't doing substitutions on a prix fixe menu, but rather than just politely saying so, the waiter literally said, "That's not going to happen." For course one, we ordered four soups and one salad. He brought out one soup, one salad, and walked away. For 15 minutes. Then served another table. When we asked him where the rest of the food was, he said to my father, "Hold up bro, course two is coming." I asked about the rest of course one, and he literally scratched his head and said "My bad!" He then brought out three of the wrong soups. When he finally brought the right things, they were all cold and the vegetables in the chowder were undercooked. He then immediately served the second course by pushing away the food we were just served. I got beef carpaccio, which contained all of the salt everywhere. Everyone else got the stuffed squash. Not only was it terrible and dry, but the waiter described it as being made of mashed potatoes, when it was of course made of squash. For an entree, I ordered the leg of lamb. My plate came out and it was freezing cold (as was my dad's). We sent them back. When mine came back, the lamb was perfect with one exception - it was prime rib, not lamb. Our waiter came over and asked if my stepmom and I wanted more wine. She said yes, I said no. A few minutes later, out came two glasses of wine. We wouldn't even accept dessert. No one ever offered us a comp of any kind. Our waiter brought the check out and said "I hope I didn't put too much of a bummer on Christmas" and walked away. Keep in mind that at no point during this charade was the restaurant crowded. Whoever manages this place should join Opus Dei and start flogging themselves repeatedly in the mirror each morning until this becomes a real restaurant.

We made a reservation at Winfield's Bistro for Christmas dinner a couple weeks beforehand at the recommendation of our concierge. We arrived early and were seated 15 minutes after our reservation time. I figured that since it was Christmas, the dining patrons were having a leisurely dinner. This was far from the case. Apparently, Winfield's was extremely short staffed that evening. We were not given a menu until 15 minutes after we were seated. We were not able to place our order for the four course Christmas dinner for another 15 minutes. We watched as three tables got up and left after they had not been served their first course after an hour wait. It was our first time to the area and considering it was Christmas, we didn't know where we would eat if we had left which is the only reason we stayed. Finally, after two and a half hours, we were served our entrees. They were both cold. The manager and the staff were extremely apologetic but a three hour meal at a restaurant was not the way we wanted to spend our Christmas.
