La Brioche Bakery is pretty good. Have I been to better bakeries? Absolutely. Does La Brioche bite the big one? Absolutely not. What I find to be pretty neat about this place is that the local culinary school feed into the bakery. Working at a college that stresses the importance of getting experience in the field, I appreciate the MO of La Brioche and giving culinary students the chance to please the taste buds of locals and visitors (like myself). This is, however, what one must expect when coming to this bakery - students are baking the product. I don't mean to say that they don't have what it takes to create a mean croissant, it's just that they don't have as much experience doing so as other seasoned bakers who have opened their own shops. I enjoyed a snickerdoodle cookie here with some coffee, and I was content with my purchase. My taste buds were satisfied, and that's all I could ask for from a baked good. If I come back to Montpelier, I would return to La Brioche and support the students and their passion.

This place has always been my favorite growing up in Montpelier. I use to come here all the time after school for their fresh coffee and warm chocolate chip cookies :) very friendly staff and talented chefs! Bon appetite!

The soups can be awesome...a large with roll and butter for under $4 is great...as long as the servers (students ?) don't spill and slop soup all over the bowl and napkin, don't give you a dirty spoon or forget the roll. Breads vary a bit but are generally very good to excellent. Glad to see that they don't pull a Red Hen Bakery on us and burn the hell out of the bread. I agree with another poster that the pre-wrapped and refrigerated sandwiches are a one-time-is-enough thing. Cake slices are way small for the price. Hell the cakes are made with free labor !

Great little find. We were looking for something simple and this fit the bill. Everything appears to be made on premise. Coffee was good. We'd go out of our way to go back again.

I was expecting more. I was expecting good pastry. This I did not get. I got hot chocolate that was from a mix, a super hard oatmeal cookie and some German Chocolate thing that was sweet. Overwhelmingly sweet. Good bakeries are hard to find. Pass this one up.

If only the cookies weren't more sugar than flavor, if the muffins weren't bricks, and if the sandwiches weren't pre-packaged. Only then would I boost La Brioche's rating. This bakery, run by New England Culinary Institute, is a disappointment in the heart of Montpelier. We hurt for baked goods in the Capitol City. Your best bet might be Hunger Mountain Food Coop. Or Red Hen Bakery in Middlesex.

I was quite disappointed with La Brioche. I expected it to be fantastic, because all of my experiences with New England Culinary Institute restaurants have been divine- at least in terms of food. But here, I had a dry cookie and my gf had an even drier piece of chocolate cake. She didn't even finish her slice of cake, and she is crazy about all things chocolate. Likewise, the coffee was substandard. All that said, perhaps we just hit the cafe at the wrong time of day or something. Still, I expected the same quality of food as I had across the street at the Main Street Grill. I'd give them another shot, since I've had really great desserts at other NECI restaurants, most notably Butler's. Still, when sugar hounds like me and my gf don't finish our sweet treats, something is terribly wrong.

My mom and I stopped for a quick cup of coffee and breakfast. I had the turkey and havarti croissant. While it was good, it would have been much better warmed up, and they didn't offer. Also, the girl BEHIND me got the last chocolate croissant, which is what I originally wanted, but they skipped over me in the confusion of the line. I think it's a great concept and not badly priced, but things did seem to be a little disorganized. I've only seen restaurants run by culinary students, but a coffee shop is a nice change.

The best cappuccino I've tasted since I laid my feet in the States. Nice croissants too. Didn't care much about the muffins.

Stopped in for a quick bite to eat at this bakery. Was hoping for more of a vast selection but def didn't have much in terms of selection. I did get an amazing Chocolate Mousse Cake though so that has to be worthy of some stars obviously. Friendly staff, quick and efficient, nice place, just wish they had more of a selection at least when i was there.

This place was indeed horribly disappointing. I expected so much more from a New England Culinary Institute bakery. The pastries were nice looking but once you dig in you find you've purchased yourself a dull and dry piece of fluff. To make matters worse they serve extremely unpalatable coffee. I'm not sure what the problem is but this is the only NECI institution that I don't really ever want to go into again... and it's the bakery!

Normally I just stop by to get their hot crusty bread or might get a cookie or some nuts tarts. I don't really drink coffee or juice so i stay away from that. I ate alot of their pastries when I was in baking class but after awhile I stop eating it because after you know how much butter they use in their products then you think twice about eating it. lol This place is alway crowed so expect alittle line. Also La Brioche has free internet so that is alway a plus.
