This was a very pleasant surprise! The cheese plate with roasted garlic was great, the prime rib was delicious and wild boar gnocchi was yum. The apple crumb cake for dessert was also a yummy treat (thanks for packing it up for us). The service was really good and the bathrooms were very clean.

Food was amazing service was awesome, love the unique local concept of the menu. I had an amazing steak, my boyfriend tried the special which he loved. It's awesome that you can find such an amazing restaurant on the mountain, I will definitely return if back in the area.

I love this place! The service is fast and friendly, and the food is delicious. My family and I always enjoy eating downstairs, but the upstairs sun room is really pretty too. We started with a cheese plate, that included various types of Vermont cheeses. It was amazing! I especially loved the blue cheese. For my main course, I got the Vermont chicken, which was sweet and beautifully cooked. My dad got an impressive chicken pot pie, that was golden at the top, and full of fresh vegetables. The kids menus was also great. They had lots of options for kids that don't want to eat a little kids meal. We will defiantly be returning to hearth and candle.

I love America because for the large portions and decent prices in restaurants. Located in the village of a family resort, I was expecting ridiculously high prices that I'm used to in Blue Mountain in Canada.. You know, 12$ for a drink, $50 steaks... and you're still hungry. This is the most "upscale" restaurant in the village but prices are what you find in an average Canadian chain restaurant. The decor is very homey with a fireplace and dim lighting, a place you would expect to spend $100+ . They advertise all their food is from local farms.. and yet they have seafood on the menu when their state has no large body of water around.. makes you wonder. As an adventurous foodie, of course I would order exotic meats and dishes that aren't available in Canada. 1. Ostrich meat tar tar: ($12) like all tar tars, the meat was finely chopped along with a raw egg on top. Double your chances to catch food poisoning. Comparing to other meat tar tars that I've tried made in the same way.. beef and horse, the ostrich is less irony. It was so good we ordered a second portion to share! 2. Cheese platter... ($5-6) depending on what cheese you selected.. we chose one of everything. I love cheese and always thought I was a cheese connoisseur.. until I tried the ones here, most of the ones on the menu I've never even heard of. 3. Elk tenderloin ($42) : Only served in rare, which is totally fine since even rare is over cooked for me. There was only 3 very very thin pieces served, they try to fill you up with the potatoes that accompanies it. Maybe it was the cut of the meat, it was soooooo soft and breaks right off without chewing it. Hearth and Candle definitely helped me opened my eyes and left a great impression for exotic meats. Nothing was mediocre. This is the place to go to relax with a drink after a tiring day of riding.

Our first night at Smuggler's Notch Resort, we arrived late and a little hungry. We decided to splurge on a light meal at the Hearth & Candle. We were sat near a fire place in the bar area, which was perfect. I'm guessing this was the family friendly side as we had our daughter and there was another couple with a small child. I ordered French Onion Soup. My husband, the Potato Leek Soup Du Jour. We also split one of the appetizer specials: Swedish Meatballs. The meatballs were very tasty, but perhaps a little too much garlic and pepper. I think what was missing was some lingonberry jam to cut the rich, spicy sauce. This was accentuated by the savory French Onion Soup.... Perhaps a bad pairing on my part, but my local hard cider did help between bites and slurps. My daughter was the luckiest... We asked of a kids menu, which goes to 16 years old, and she ordered the Steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. The steak was perfect. It was a generous size and cooked to perfection. I was so happy to see this beyond the usual fried chicken tenders that is the default kids meal option at most places. My daughter was not happy with the gene beans as she prefers them very soft and the ones served were still crisp. To me, that's more of a personal choice. My husband enjoyed his soup. I had a taste and found it well seasoned and nice texture. 2 soups, 1 appetizer, 1 Kids meal, 1 wine, 1 cider and 1 non alcoholic cocktail ran us about $70 pre tip. A bit high, but this is a resort and this is their most expensive restaurant. If you can only splurge once, perhaps it's best to do a full meal. We may still do that in the days to come!

We wanted to like this restaurant as we love that the food is organic and local. Unfortunately, the food was not good at all. My husband ordered the beef short ribs, they were tough and chewy and were charred to death. Short ribs should be very tender. I had the butternut squash ravioli. The first time it came out, it was frozen on the inside. They brought me a new plate which tasted a bit better, but the homemade pasta was tough and grainy and not very appetizing. Also, we were never brought a bread basket, which is not that big of a deal. Last but not least, when I went to the bathroom, there was a cockroach crawling next to the toilet! We would definitely never come back.

Meh. I got their version of the fish and chips because it looked so good and different but it really fell short. The fish was bland and the malt vinegar dressing was very diluted. The hubs got the prime rib - he said it was good but almost like they cheated and soaked it in the au jus before serving. The apple crisp dessert was not that great either - kinda sour. I wouldn't come back and it was a tad pricy for such a blah meal.

Worst restaurant I've been to in a very long time. First of all, it's so dimly lit that we had to use the flashlight app on our cell phones to read the friggin menu. I ordered butternut squash soup. It arrived in a decent sized bowl BUT IT WAS AT MOST 1/4 FULL!!! Ridiculous. My veggie pot pie was gross. My friend had prime rib which required quite a bit of dissection to find a bits of meat amidst the fat. This was really really really bad. AVOID.

Our party of four ordered three different entrees; Gnocchi w/wild boor, Mahi-Mahi and Vermont Chicken. All were tasty and perfectly prepared with all agreeing that the chicken was the best of the three. Our hostess and server were both professional, yet friendly and certainly contributed to our dinning pleasure. While the food might be considered of "fine dining" the atmosphere is more relaxed and tables are bare wood. On the other hand, prices are at a level one would expect back home in the metro NY/NJ area. On the other hand, kids eat free. In summary, two things stand out most; the food was very good and a "house" wine at $9 was a very small (maybe 4-5 oz) pour.
(4)Don M.
The food here is excellent. This place could easily thrive in any city, but here it is a short walk from the slopes! The atmosphere is best at the bar or in the adult dining room. The bartending is top notch. Have Akash make a drink for you if he is around. I have heard the portions described as small, but they most assuredly are not unless you are a devotee of supersizing. If you get appetizers you will be bringing food home. Not inexpensive but a good value.
(5)Michael P.
We would give it four and a half stars. the main dishes were really good in almost every respect. they had a special treat the night we were there, monkfish! the crab risotto on the side did not have any crab I could see or taste and it tasted mostly of citrus - so that was a bit of a disappointment. also they have free children meals but they are from the cheaper fried foods version and not the better foods which they have on a second children's menu. friendly service. a bit pricey.

We stayed at smugglers notch resort and booked ourselves in the snow shoe dinner at Top of the Notch which is on top of Sterling Mountain. Hearth and Candle catered our dinner and despite being in a shack with no electricity and our chef had to do everything with a head lamp (the place was pitch black) the food was amazing. The bread was warm. We had venison chili, new england clam chowder, salmon, chicken with brie and the house salad and apple crisp for dessert. Make sure to come here if you're in the area. .

4.5 This is an amazing place. I am so happy the boyfriend and I went. Hearth & Candle supports local farms/farmers. This is a big deal to me. I genuinely appreciate restaurants that gather their ingredients locally; the tastes are richer, fresher and just plain ole good. I feel good about knowing my food wasnt sitting on a boat/truck for hours on end while wasting gasoline and emitting carbons just so i can have dinner. This restaurant focuses on the patron's enjoyment and even offers a child-free area. GENIUS Thank ye kindly, Hearth & Candle for giving me the option to have a romantic dinner date without having to glare at the parents of the nearby shouting, giggling, crying, fighting children. thank you. the food? so so good. i dont need to spill my guts over the great flavors. the other yelp reviews did a good job at that point. it aint cheap, but its worth is all the way.

Everyone thinks it's greatest especially the locals. Having lived in the area for 6 years I have never been impressed or had a good meal the several times I have been. The most recent time I found long hair in my mashed potatoes from what turned out to be one of the head cooks who's a male. Don't waste your money here unless you like flossing with human hair.

The name conjures up a cozy New England tavern serving hearty comfort food amidst wood paneling and early American antiques; however, the only thing traditional about this restaurant was its name. Last week our party of three adults vacationed at Smuggler's Notch and after a long day of travel we were looking for a stress-free meal so we decided to dine at the Hearth and Candle which is on the property of the resort. My wife and I tried the "prime rib special" which came with a small salad and an "apple fritter" desert. Our son chose the short ribs which he enjoyed. The prime rib was very inferior---obviously it was some leftover New York strip cut into slices. The mashed potatoes were the worst we have ever tasted. The deserts was simply an apple pie cut into tiny sections. The ambience was not inviting and the service was indifferent given that there were only two or three couples in the entire room plus the server was very condescending to the point of being obnoxious. Below the main dining room is a bar where we could hear the sound of merrymaking. Perhaps we should have gone down there for some pub grub. All in all, it was a negative experience and not a good beginning to our vacation. If you find yourself in Smuggler's Notch, take the trouble to drive towards Stowe; there appear to be many better dining options.

I don't understand some of the reviews on here. Perhaps no restaurant would meet your high standards. We found the restaurant quite charming although we were expecting a hearth somewhere. Overall the atmosphere is cozy, the staff was attentive (all tables were full), drinks and food arrived quickly and the experience was quite good. Some of the prices seemed a little high but you are at a resort restaurant so it goes hand in hand. The cheese plates are delicious, the maple butter was fantastic and the Vermont chicken was really, really good. My dinner companion thought the sauce was a little too tangy but I thought it was quite delish! Definitely not a place for kids unless they want something other than hot dogs or pizza!
(4)Patricia F.
My husband and I were looking for a nice meal to end our stay. The food was some of the worst I have ever had! My coq au vin was tasteless and the chicken was stringy. The only good thing was I sent it back and it was removed from our bill. My husband's veal Marsala had thick breaded pieces of veal instead of thin cutlets. The only good thing we had was the flatbread appetizer. If you are wanting good quality food and nice atmosphere this is not the place to go.
(1)Tim P.
Although this is a resort restaurant the menu is quite creative. For example, the trout is offered brick baked on bed of garlic and cream risotto, the lamb is braised with pistachios and they do have prime rib. Anybody who braises lamb with pistachios deserves a glowing yelp review, which I am very happy to provide. Much recommended, we will be back.
(5)Maria M.
A cozy gourmet restaurant that is actual kid friendly. There is a kids menu and dining room that serves families but also an adults only dinning room. On Smuggler's Notch Resort's property but this resturant is independently owned and operated. Entrees use local ingredients but this place could be located in New York City with the quality of food they serve. Delicious meals created with flare and flavor. Always a highlight of our annual trip to "Smuggs".

We really enjoyed ourselves on a recent visit here. Wonderful start to finish. The food and drink selection was unique and interesting with something for everyone. We had a unique cheeseplate, oysters, duck confitt, rabbit for appitizers and split an order of short ribs. It was a really special evening.
(5)Bill S.
Food was great. Service was excellent. Kid/tween friendly. Pricier than expected.

I have been dining here for years, although not as frequently now as I have moved out of state. The food here has always been among the best eats in the area, but this past week I ate there again (and again, 2 nights later!) and I have to say the menu is the best I have ever seen them have. The two meals we had included the "Oscar" (grilled shrimp, crab cake, filet mignon), skate wing(!), duck and beef ribs-all of which were exceptional. Add their famous seafood chowder, hush puppies and duck ravioli apps and we really couldn't have been more satisfied with our meals, which we finished with a house-infused apple-pie martini. Keep in mind reservations are a good idea during the winter of summer season, and if you want to avoid a family atmosphere request the adult-only Birch Room for a quiet, relaxed dining experience. I am already anticipating my next visit to Vermont, and the Hearth will be my first stop for dinner...

Not a good experience. My daughter ordered a hot dog and it cam out still COLD in the center. C'mon guys its a freakin hot dog! Salmon and steak were just ok. I asked for medium, some parts were well done, some medium rare, taste was just ok. Gazpacho was quite good though. Prices far ezceed quality. I know you are on a resort and you'll pay more, but we will not be back, there are much better choices a short drive away.

This restaurant is outstanding. The service is perfect, the food excellent, inventive with local flavors. Not your usual boring fare. True, it is pricey. My husband and I had one glass of wine, 2 glasses of beer, one appetizer and an entree each, bringing our total to $100+. So save it for a special occasion. Apparently the Vermont Chicken is very good and was brought back by "popular demand." While we dined there, all members of a family ordered just this!
(4)Sally W.
Congenial hostesses and waitors/waitresses; kid-friendly, but also has a small bar downstairs and has more secluded tables. A interesting entree menu (I had delicious wild boar with gnocchi), but not too many options for salads, soups, or desserts. A very nice getaway from the usual hubbub of vacationing families.
(4)johnny d.
Always excellent! Higher prices for the area, but not out of line with the quality of the food. Definitely go here! Service is top notch too.
(5)Mike S.
Nice spot. Enjoyed the bar. Great local beers. Good quality food. Kids ate free. Not cheap but good.
(4)Valerie H.
Perfect for foodies, unique dishes. A little pricey but to be expected in a resort atmosphere. Cheese platter was great! Yummy potato soup, I had without bacon. Eclectic variety of food and cocktails, great presentation. Lots of local ingredients.
(4)Samme C.
It's Thanksgiving night! We are on vacation and dying for a turkey dinner. They were open thanksgiving night! Which is awesome. The Fam got turkey dinner and I got Vermont Chicken dinner. Turkey was good and Vermont Chicken was great. Turkey dinner was tonight special of course, but Vermont Chicken is on the menu. So make sure you try it. The wine sauce is awesome. The dining room is small and has a Norwegian feel to it. The menu is also small in every category. It is expensive, but it's fine dining.
(4)Opchanacanough W.
My family and friends love it here. When we went here we sat downstairs but we also like the up stairs. They also have a Coloring contest on the back of the kids menu. They have some Vermont cheese to begin with. The service is fast and great. The kids menu has a lot of options. I got the kids steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. For dessert I the special which was the banana foster which was very good.

This was my girlfriends and I second trip up to smuggs from CT, excellent food both times. The bacon wrapped filet was probably one of the best steaks I have eaten. Pretty dam good for a ski resort.
(5)Sean H.
Convenient to smuggs, and ok food but expensive for what it is. We were seated upstairs and the acoustics of the room were weird - I could hear everyone else's conversations as if they were at my table.
(3)Kelsey H.
I had such a good meal! Would highly recommend duck, if was amazing. Really though, everything ordered was amazing. A little expensive but definitely worth it.
(5)Paul B.
New chef and menu - both outstanding!!! Highly recommend this restaurant - we'll definitely return.
(5)Joe A.
The pesto fettucini was a flop! Very plain tasting. Everything else was great. Try the filet, crab cake and shrimp or the fish and chips with a twist. They were both superb. All the appetizers were great and the service was impeccable.
(5)Sean R.
We go up to Smuggs all the time, and try to make a point of eating at the Hearth and Candle because the food is always great and the menu changes constantly with new interesting dishes. The Vermont Chicken is always on the menu, for good reason. Great atmosphere for adults, maybe not the best for young kids. I sifted through the negative reviews on here, and they are unwaranted, and certainly not a typical experience for me or my family. Hearth and Candle really is your best bet for good food in the area, and it's right on the resort which makes it even easier.
(5)David C.
Really cute and convenient. Staff very kind. Nice hot bread and butter. Entrees not good and very expensive. Drive down the road to a local restaurant.
(3)Sarah W.
Being at a ski resort doesn't offer a lot of food options but luckily Smugglers' Notch secures a huge WIN with the Hearth and Candle. We went with a family who has been going to this restaurant for 10 years who had nothing but the highest remarks. My husband and I, who have city standards for food, would call this restaurant 'top notch' and here's why. 1.) Food - YUM. I got a steak that was done perfectly medium. My waitress also easily let me switch from fries to mashed potatoes without any drama. I got the beet salad which had a perfect slice of beautiful blue cheese on top. My husband and I split the bread pudding which was amazing for someone who isn't even a bread pudding fan. Our waitress said she eats the bread pudding for dinner sometimes - that was a great endorsement. The entire table was very happy with their meal, as well. Portions where just right. 2.) Drinks - I ordered a delicious whiskey martini. I'm not a fan of martini glasses (dumbest invention, ever) and they easily accommodated my request to put it in a different glass. 3.) Ambiance and noise - We ate upstairs (there's a different look/feel downstairs). The noise level was PERFECT for my one working ear. I'd call it quiet even. Clean, pressed white table cloths and low lighting made for a classy affair. 4.) Service - Spot on. Our waitress was there when we needed her, kept our water filled and was very helpful and friendly.
