It's been nearly 10 years since I've moved away from Chester. When I think back upon the times in this great village, Baba-a-Louis' Bakery is one of the many great memories. Walking down to the bakery from Dodge Road (a healthy stroll), we'd enjoy weekly pizza nights. This was also a very convenient and attractive place for lunch as well, since I worked a short distance away. As striking as many of the products is the building and decor itself. I see a few negative reviews of this fine establishment on Yelp but I'd encourage the rest of you to give it a try. If you're from Chester or the immediate environs, then you already know the deal - but if you're a flatlander (like myself) speeding by on 11 (slow down, by the way...) then I'd really recommend you stop and appreciate this very unique place. (Oh, and if you're coming from the interstate and are heading up 103 - do yourself a favor and go straight; take the mile detour. Trust me). note - if you're expecting a french baguette (i.e., what is intended to resemble as closely as possible an authentic french baguette) then know in advance that this sourdough version does not aim to replicate the baguette from the old country. Louis' version is his own interpretation of the Vermonter baguette!

Disappointing. Unfulfilled Potential. In 2014, while staying at Jackson Gore in Ludlow, VT and looking for the ultimate Vermont bakery experience, I researched bakeries and Baba A Louis came up with high ratings. So a road trip was order down to Chester. We passed Caste Pointe along the way, which looks like an excellent spot for dinner. Arriving at Baba A Louis, the place had character, but very limited offerings for breakfast. No muffins, no Danish, no Donuts. Wait, was I at a bakery? Was there a hidden back room I was missing? We kept looking for more. We left with some bread and an ok brownie. This was certainly not the Vermont bakery experience I had read about online. This was no Bova's from Little Italy in Boston.

Have been going to southern Vermont for over thirty years. Have passed Baba's bakery for as many years also. One day my wife and decided to stop by. As we walked in the greeting was as warm as an Antarctic summer or a vat of liquid nitrogen. The place was pretty much empty. Tried the various breads - dense, hard, dry, flavorless. If you ever had the good fortune of having styrofoam in your mouth you've just had a taste of the bread. Don't bother.

Yummy sticky buns and mint brownies. Beautiful building with wood beams, large windows, stone path with wooden branch archway leading to the entrance- see the photos on the website: babalouisbakery.com/bake… I took a star off for being cash only- no credit cards! Wish it were just a tad closer to Okemo or Stratton, it's a trek from "home base" (on a ski trip) if I want to go get a pastry.

there's nothing not wonderful about these people! Delicious sweet pastries as well as savory pastries. Breads, crackers, weekly pizza (that I haven't been around to sample yet) these people are a destination! There is also a separate Phoenix Cafe operating there as well, and the food is also excellent. Salads, breakfast, lunches, yum! ,I have spent hours there drinking coffee and working on crosswords, it's a great place to while away the summer afternoon!

We always visit John and Ruthie and the bakery staff when we are in Vermont - it's worth a cross-country trip! The bread and pastries are the best in the world, the building is an amazing architectural jewel, and there's free wifi. Pizzas served Fridays are fabulous meals. Cash and checks only (keeping their costs down).

We were researching places in Vermont as well as the Vermont Cheese Trail Tour and Taste and came across this GEM of a place. The smells and tastes are as amazing as the architectural details inside. We stayed for lunch and ordered the smoked salmon quiche ( the creamiest quiche I ever ate) and a turkey and bacon sandwich with garlic mayo on the most delightful grain bread. The staff was friendly and the place was spotless. We left with a loaf of artisan's bread, sticky buns, ginger cookies (WOW!) and a big smile. Just remember to bring CASH as they do not accept credit cards.
