I never cared for barbecue until my uncle said I had to try this place, and now I'm hooked! Their combination plates are amazing! The ribs, sausage, pork, chicken - everything is incredible, and you get a LOT for the price! Every time I go to Vermont (which is at least 3-4 times per year) I HAVE to stop at Top of the Hill Grill; otherwise I consider my trip unsuccessful. Oh, and get the baked beans!
(5)Jeremy F.
If you're a fan of serious bbq from all over the South, as I am, don't hesitate to go. Burnt ends were bangin', the sides were tasty and the view over the idyllic Vermont landscape was a lovely backdrop to a delicious meal. Wish I had more than the day-and-a-half to try it more than twice (gonna try to go back tonight with friends, heheh). If I don't update this review, it already has my stamp of approval!

I love the Heidi wrap and roasted roots! Thanks for having vegetarian and vegan options at the bbq joint! Awesome view good vibes great place :)
(5)Paige B.
Great view over the pond, very relaxing, like we were on an awesome picnic. Food is good, we had the shredded pork in bbq sauce, brisket, and 1/4 chicken. Not a lot of smoke flavor, tasted more like they were oven cooked, but nonetheless flavorful, and tender. Beans were good, got the impression they were canned beans with some Bbq sauce thrown on, which is fine but would be better if they sautéed up some onion and a little bell pepper, many mixed in some regular chili beans too...Cornbread average, throw a can of creamed corn into your cornbread mix and give it a little flair. Coleslaw needs a little salt, a little vinegar. Had no flavor aside from watery cabbage. Great house labeled root beer. Overall an enjoyable experience and would visit again especially with some tweaks.

Bloody delicious stuff and I'm not that much of a "grill" person. Cool little hand made menus on paper plates describe the dishes and everything is priced to be easily agreed upon. They have their own soda they make (and it's great btw) in addition to delicious and slightly spicy rice they side many of the dishes. So far I've had the Grilled Catfish, fish tacos and pulled pork sliders and haven't been disappointed. Beautiful view overlooking some kind of waterway. Definitely back soon. Only drawback is yellow jackets trying to drink my soda for me, but it is what it is when you go out in to the forest to eat.

If you like hot and spicy this place will suit your palette. Fish tacos were so spicy it was hard to enjoy them. Rice was a little milder for black beans were too spicy too. My husband ordered the half smoked chicken with coleslaw, beans and cornbread. It was pretty good although it came slathered with barbecue sauce, should've remembered to ask for it on the side. Cornbread was like a little brick. The chicken did have a nice smoky flavor. The tables were dirty and had not been cleaned in a while so this lent to not such a good experience. We asked for tap water and it was served warm with no ice. The only other option was soft drinks or tea. Since it was evening we could not have the tea and we do not drink soft drinks. Would we stop here again? Probably not.

Great stop in Brattleboro for BBQ whether you are traveling north or south on I91. More than worth the five minutes off exit 3. The brisket is top notch (this coming from a true southerner). You don't find this kind of food in New England often... They have a variety of sandwiches and combo platters to choose from, all of which look to be quality cuts home cooked with love. The view from this place is spectacular. Indoor/outdoor seating in a very unique setting. Bring your dog! They are welcome too :).
(5)Rob P.
Good is ok but for the price and quality I would not consider returning due to wait times and lack of inside dining space.
(3)Steven K.
Damn good! Beef ends were rockin' Will definitely stop in next time I'm passing through Brattleboro!
(5)Mike Angie D.
Great place to eat and relax. I tried the brisket, ribs and sausage all was very good. The employees were extremely helpful. I enjoyed the outdoor setting looking over the valley and waterway. If there was one thing I would suggest is a 3 and 4 meat plate with smaller portions so all items could be tried. I made a 3 meat but was $25 and not enough sausage was added for $6. Even with that I will stop again for the food and service just chose less items.

My cousin chose this place for us to meet up as the midpoint between his home in Portsmouth NH and mine near South Glens Falls NY. The line of people waiting to order was a good sign. Turned out to be a great choice. The pulled pork was excellent and the people serving and running the place were friendly. Seating is outdoors and the view was great, but there's also a covered area. Not too far from the interstate and highly recommended for a visit if the weather is nice. Otherwise you can always do take away. Will definitely return when next passing by.
(4)Will H.
This place is over priced, food was ok the chicken sausage gumbo had NO chicken. Root potatos were burnt

Quick service, nice view and solid BBQ.

We stopped by here on a recent rainy Friday evening. The line wasn't that bad and there was ample seating under the tent. I went with a smoke pulled pork tortilla rollup. The pork was cooked perfectly and had a nice smokey taste to it. I liked the bbq sauce used as well. The portion size was pretty good. It looked short on the plate, but it was stuffed pretty darn good. My wife opted for the salad with smoked turkey. The turkey stole the show. Outstanding. I fancy myself as an amateur cook when it comes to BBQ smoking; the turkey nailed it. We went with two sides: Coleslaw and baked beans. The beans were perfect. They had a nice blend of flavor and hint of sweet. They also had a bit of meat mixed in for flavor. The coleslaw was good. Very fresh, but could have used a bit more dressing. I found it a little dry. Try the root-beer! It's their own brand it it's way better than what you'll get from the national brands. A great spot to eat as well. The view would be nice on a sunny day/evening. It's a little pricey for what you get. But then again, what you get is good.

The Top of the Hill Grill was a great lunch stop on the our vacation. The food was very good though not the best beef brisket and pulled pork we have had. The salads we superb and the lemonade was homemade. They have the best staff we have encountered. The outside dining area could not be more picturesque and pleasant.

Best BBQ joint I've been to in a long time. Outside and inside patio areas with a great view. Great!

When you see Curtis' BBQ in Putney, pass it, and keep driving another 6-8 miles into Brattleboro to Top of the Hill Grill. The prices, food, and scenery are much better. It's a small roadside stand perched atop a tall steep hillside overlooking scenic ponds. The seating area has like a tree house like aspect about 20-30 feet above the ground. It's a very cool atmosphere with bluegrass playing while you're sitting high up among the trees. The menu is pretty expansive with tons of options. I ordered the combo plate which gave me a bit of everything. My wife ordered the chicken fajita. The verdict. Ribs were thick and meaty, tender with a nice sauce. Baked beans were decent, as was the brisket and chicken. The coleslaw was bland, and needed salt & pepper. My wife's chicken fajita was average, but was seasoned good. Overall, very cool place to visit. The BBQ is much better than Curtis'. They also take credit cards which is very convenient.

Top of the Hill Grill is one of our favorite places to eat in Brattleboro. The food is smoked and barbecued to perfection and very flavorful. We have become vegetarians since our first couple of visits to Top of the Hill, but surprisingly even vegetarians can enjoy the smoky fare at this meat-focused establishment. We have tried several of the veggie inspired dishes in the past few years. Our favorite by far is the Tempeh Wrap. It is served in a choice of wrap (we usually get the sun-dried tomato), grilled peppers and onions, huge chunks of tempeh, and Top of the Hill's own sweet and spicy BBQ sauce. We were a bit disappointed this year that the wrap no longer includes chunks of potato, like it did last year. But it was still a fantastic and large meal. We also tried their grilled sweet corn. It was cooked to perfection inside the husk. We LOVED it! The service is solid. The staff seems a bit frazzled at times, but they are kind and helpful as well. They definitely do all they can to serve their guests. Over all we always enjoy a visit to Top of the Hill whenever we visit Brattleboro.

Nothing beats the Top of the Hill for BBQ
(5)Ross B.
On our way to Mt. Washington. We hate chain restaurants. This place is amazing. The brisket is out of this world as is the pulled pork. But skipping the baked beans would be a crime. Great kids options and it's all home made right there. Such a great welcome to Vermont!
(5)Marco D.
Came here on business from RI, was looking for some good eats and found this place. Wow - was it great. Got all 4 of the sliders, and they were all amazing. I'd definitely take the 2.5 hour drive again to try this place again.
(5)Dan B.
A great spot to hit if you live in the area, just visiting or stopping by on the way further north like we were. As a vegetarian, the options were super - the tempeh burger is fantastic with avocado. But I admit I had to try some of the pulled pork - and I was glad I did. We stopped by with a large group and the staff was super to us and we all left very full and very happy. Besides the entrees, the cookies was delicious and the brownies had a little kick to them that added to their fudge-y goodness. And it's not just the food - the setting has some great views and there is even a hammock calling your name.

This review pains me to write- were usually big fans of Curtis right up the street. But I have to admit this place was pretty good. If they had Curtis' Carolina sauce it would be perfection (is it heresy to byobbq sauce?) The good- heated porch was nice this time of year and I suspect the outdoor area would be very pretty during the summer. The ribs were pretty bangin and the chicken we got was pretty great too. Brisket was meh- but certainly wasn't bad. Greens were awesome. Menu was also pretty accommodating for vegetarians tho we didn't try any of it (what's the point??? Lol) The bad- Very slow service considering we were one of 3 couples and bbq should basically be done before they take your order. Not a huge fan of sweet BBQ sauce... But that's a preference. The ugly- Woman who took our order was a supreme begotch... We wanted burnt ends and they didn't have it so god forbid we took 2 more min to figure out our deal (no one else was there). Gave us a Liz lemon epic eye roll... Slammed the order window shut. Lost a star for that alone. The other lady was nice and the gentleman was very friendly.
(4)Meg B.
I have been a few times and really enjoy the food and ambiance. They have beautiful patios overlooking the hill down below and also a small dining room for when it's rainy or cold. My only reservations about the place are length of time required (there were only about 3 small groups in front of us when we went but it took over an hour for us to get through the line and receive our food--that was just unexpected for a place that is not even a sit-down restaurant) and the cost (the plates are a great deal with sides and meat but getting a side, sandwich, and drink can easily be $20).
(4)Matthias J.
Beautiful location when you can sit outside on a nice summer day. Broad selection of dishes. Our group sampled the pulled pork, burned ends, ribs and burger. The ribs were rather disappointing, being somewhat on the tough side and with not much taste to them. Burned ends was my favorite.
(3)Paula P.
Out of a small building a little larger than a food truck comes an amazing array of wonderful food!! This is a great place! Everyone can get exactly what they want and it's all great! We got a hamburger and a chicken sandwich and both were great! The outdoor seating is very pleasant (although on a hot buggy day it might not be so nice) and it's central in the little town of Brattleboro. Definitely a place to stop at whether you're staying there or just passing through! We are full-time RVers; see more about our travels at retired-openroad.us .
(5)Jess A.
Stopped for the first time a few days ago and was less than impressed. Ordered pulled pork and an ice tea and paid $19. The baked beans tasted like they were straight out of a can, coleslaw had no flavor and the pulled pork was bland. I expected more of a smoked flavor but only tasted that from the bbq sauce added on top, not from the meat. The only positive thing I have to say is the portion of meat was large and the people were nice. I'm not sure what all the hype is about but we won't be back.

Great view overlooking the water and the greenery. Top of the Hill is nicely perched on, well, a hilltop, with spacious outdoor seating and a nice venue to hang out on a warm day. I came here for lunch the other day with two colleagues while in town for the week. One of us told them to put all our food in one bag, however they forgot to do that and we didn't realize we were missing two people's food until we had driven away into town. We called and they apologized and offered to keep the food for us to pick up on our way back. Because we were both starving by that point we just bought something else in downtown and decided to stop by the place a few hours later. About two hours later we came back to get the food. What we did not expect was that they made us fresh food as soon as they saw us pull into the parking lot. When my friend came up to the counter the lady gave her a refund of $10 (slightly more than half of what we'd paid) along with our orders that had just been remade. Although my friend said she wouldn't take the refund, the lady also insisted, saying "we can't take it either" since she truly want to apologize. Seeing that my friend ended up dropping it into the tip can, she said "ok well, at least take a cookie." So we really appreciated the effort of them remaking our food and making the unnecessary refund. Back to the food. I had beef fajitas that came with a couple of tortillas, green peppers, salsa, and sour cream (I skipped the onions). The portion wasn't that big. Usually when I order fajitas I can't finish them since there's always too much. The beef also was too thin and could've been juicier. But the prices were reasonable, and we had fun hanging out in the backyard while waiting for our food since it was such a nice day out. I'd recommend the place to people next time I'm in town.

3 - for the food 4 - 4 .5 for the view and ambience Stopped in from out of town. Heard the BBQ here was good. He had the gumbo I had the beef brisket. Gumbo was decent at best - it was more soupy than gumbo. Flavor was good. Cornbread was the highlight of the gumbo as it was tasty and not dry. Beef brisket was underwhelming. I expected it to have more flavor and more jus. I also felt the BBQ sauce didn't do the beef any justice. In all - the meal was cheap. I'd probably try it again. But may entertain another dish. Ambience is fantastic for the fall views of the hills. Love outdoor seating!!
(3)Brian V.
Great place for BBQ and the outdoor seating is great on a fall afternoon with the amazing foliage. The staff is friendly and the turn around for the meals was good despite the large number of people who were stopping by the restaurant and enjoying the outdoor seating.
(5)Ed S.
Stopped for dinner with the family and dog in tow. Dog friendly so it was terrific in that respect. Had a great roadside treat. View out back is nice. Picnic tables and self service but delish. Burt ends were great. Kids loved a pulled pork sandwich. So big neither finished. They loved the mac and cheese. Brisket was yummy. The greens have crushed tomato. I think for those who like that style it's a treat.
(4)Mark M.
We had a little bit of everything here and nothing disappointed. The patio has an amazing view as well. Staff was so helpful and friendly. Can't recommend enough.
(5)Dean A.
We love this place. Always looking for local veggie/vegan spots when we travel through. Found this gem, destroyed some BBQ, tempeh, sweet corn, roasted veggies, root beers and polished it off with a piece of carrot cake & pecan pie. (Mash up style) a couple of us had some root beers, others brought in BYOB style. Shit was real. Like real real. The staff was super nice & very informational. The seating was an outdoor deck overlooking some scenic landscape. Don't know the technical term, What do you think I am, some sort of geography expert? This is yelp, not geography.com . I highly recommend to anyone with a tooth for taste. It's good. By good, I mean, Amazing.
(5)Megan K.
Reviewing it twice cuz it's just that good. Drive an hour out of my way to stop here. Adding filler so it won't be a tip. Great ambience!!!!! Delicious
(5)Allie M.
The Mexican food is the best in town. Delicious. It can get realllllly crowded here. So be prepared to wait a long time. I ordered take out one night, they said it would be ready in 20 minutes. 50 minutes later it was finally ready. It was delicious but we were getting angry because we were so hungry. We kept checking with the girl that worked there. She was kind of sassy about it. But we will still go back, the food is so good. There's a nice outdoor seating area overlooking the river. I'm a baker, and Ellie's carrot cake is the best I have ever had. To die for.

Proprietor Jon Julian served up a fine barbecue meal for our groom's dinner, from his traveling truck in June 2014. We worked together on the menu--chicken and pulled pork--and an array of sides, and the crowd of 90 was pleased on all fronts. I told Jon the next week that the food tasted even better than at the riverside grill! Of special note, was Jon's patience in holding the meal for almost an hour while the groom and his friends went for a dip in the local swimming hole on a hot June day, and the food did not suffer in the least. The price is reasonable, the proportions generous, and the chef congenial. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR CATERING as well as at the home site looking over the marshes of the CT. River (especially near sunset!). NOTE: BYO--stop at North End Market a mile up the road for a grat selection of individual beers chilled in an old fashioned wooden doored cooler.
(5)Star E.
The scent of BBQ is so enticingg from the ROAD (Rt 5) we had to stop. We are tired so getting chow to go. Happy tummy. Happt tastebuds.
(4)Alex P.
They have the best beans ever and they make the pork fresh to order they have restrooms plus indoor and outdoor there is a kids menu with stuff like a hamburger and a hot dog but there is also stuff like a flat bread turkey sandwich and fish tacos from a pulled pork sandwich to the mix with corn bread pulled pork and beans.
(4)Amy C.
I had the pleasure of planning a menu with Jon Julian of TotHG for a recent event for 125 people. He provided us a selection with good value, unique and delicious flavors and unique presentation. Our guests raved! We would sttongly recommend based on our experience. Thank you!!!!
(5)Debra L.
One of the coolest places I've been to in a long time. 4 stars is overly generous if you just consider the food but when you add in the atmosphere and the view, it's worth it. You order at the counter and the menu is large and varied, but the emphasis is on BBQ. I had the BBQ chicken plate, which came with an enormous portion of a half chicken, baked beans, cole slaw and corn bread. The chicken was a little dry (but I often find chicken at BBQ places is dry, especially the white meat). Not inedible-dry, but dry enough that I was happy to slather on some extra BBQ sauce. The cole slaw was average and the baked beans and corn bread were really quite good. My husband had the BBQ brisket plate and he was satisfied. Definitely not the best BBQ you'll ever eat but still enjoyable. There were a bunch of other things on the menu I wish I would have tried instead, like burritos, fajitas, mac & cheese or pulled pork. The menu was also very vegetarian/vegan friendly in case that's your thing. Most of the seating is outdoor, with some seats covered by a tent. There is also one room in the back that is enclosed. There was great music being piped in over the speakers and you overlook a nice river. You kind of feel like you're in someone's backyard. The weird thing is, this place is right off the main strip but once you get back there and sit down you completely forget about that, especially since you can't see it or hear it. If you're on a road trip and need to make a stop for lunch, I definitely recommend this spot.
(4)Professor Anonymous Q.
Use a little caution and don't get all worked up by the location and the BBQ sign. Many outdoor tables overlook the West River and sunsets, and in summer it's a nice outdoor experience. Note to evening diners: After 6:00 you MUST have your Cutters handy as the mosquitoes can be deadly! (Cutters is a bug repellent.) There is a smaller indoor eating area available for inclement weather. Prices are moderate and reasonable. Service is always friendly and efficient, although on those busy weekend nights there will be a line and the food can take 30 minutes or more to arrive. A pleasant enough food experience in an otherwise horribly unpleasant gastronomic town, Top of the Hill is NOT a barbecue joint, though it has the feel of one. The menu also includes several Mexican dishes, some Cajun style things, and some vegan/veggie along with the standard burgers and wraps. Not much stands out here besides the BBQ chicken plate, burnt ends, and the rice and beans. Otherwise their slaw is flavorless, johnny cake okay, baked beans so-so, pulled pork okay, etc. and with a slim selection of Snapple-style bottled drinks, but you may also BYO. As for the barbecue... Not much smoked flavor, often too dry, with a sauce that tastes suspiciously like store bought, but at least the meat is done in a smoker, unlike Curtis's grilled (per)version up in Putney. Folks from NC, TX or KCMO will scoff at the Q and sauce (and they'd be justified), but around Brattleboro we're just happy that the food doesn't kill us. Four stars for the service, the view, and the fact that you and your family will not only live through this, but you will very likely go back.
(4)Mark M.
Went here Saturday night around 7:30...I can see with all of the outdoor tables and the view overlooking the river this would be a great summer spot. It was a little chilly to sit osutside, but they do have a building with 6-7 tables and an electric fireplace where we were able to sit. As for the food, my wife and I both had a half-rack of the ribs...they were ok. They were not cooked long enough and were a bit tough/chewy...did not really fall off the bone. My son's chicken tacos were very good. Staff was very friendly and service was quick. Not sure if they really smoke the ribs "low and slow". Worth another try though.
(3)Elad B.
These guys are great! Good food, great service and an amazing view. We accidentally found this place and am glad we did so. If you're in the area make sure to stop by.
(5)Jasmine W.
great food! great scenery! I'll definitely come again.
(5)Sascha B.
Yes. You know it's really Spring when Top of the Hill Grill opens again. Everything here is good, but what you really want is barbecue. Outdoor seating with a fantastic view - come on a warm, breezy day.
(5)Colby D.
The ribs are fantastic. And the gumbo is amazing considering we're this far from Nawlins. Dog and kid friendly place to grab lunch. It's not cheap considering the bbq fare, but the food/vibe is excellent.
(4)Bill S.
We'd like to say better things about the Top of the Hill Grill because they are a likable, good community sort of place with fun outdoor seating overlooking the West River and a friendly buzz. But the food, based on our experiences, is unfortunately below average. First the pulled pork barbecue, although the Grill sells more than that (emphasis on limited Mexican and Cajun dishes). It has only a vaguely smoked flavor and always seems to come way too dry. Even the rather sweet sauce can't cover up the fact that it is tasteless. The sides are dreary. The baked beans surely come right out of a can, nothing added but a piece of that dry pork. The slaw is edible, the collards lack any distinctive flavors. (The collards at Curtis' up in Putney are much better). We'd like to like it more, but the bottom line for any food establishment is the quality of the food, and sadly we haven't found very much redeeming about that here.
(2)Joe P.
I had the beef brisket sandwich was was pretty good, it just wasn't mouth watering great. It didn't come with any sides, or fries or even chips. Overall it was a decent bite to eat. Heidi's Special Wrap was also pretty good which was grilled tempeh, potatoes, cole slaw, peppers, onions, and cheese. We drove 70 miles backroads on the motorcycle (taking the very long route) to get some good back roads BBQ, and the wife gets a vegetarian wrap (I gave up trying to figure this out.....). Sorry... I lost my train of thought... It was more of an asian taste to the wrap, but it was pretty good if that is what you are looking for. Some of the things on the menu aren't typical of a roadside BBQ. There is mexican food, wraps, and yes.. vegetarian. Its a good atmosphere, with nice outdoor seating, good overlook view as you eat. Overall, a pretty good experience.
(3)Kristal L.
This was such a lucky find. Great food (the jambalaya and the Ribs were my favs) and really fantastic atmosphere. It was so much fun to sit out on the deck with my friends and enjoy yummy food with a amazing view. We will be back (read with the voice of the Terminator)!
(5)Rebecca A.
I have only been to this place once but I love so much about it. A bunch of friends and I went here to celebrate graduation and I am glad we did! 1) I got half a chicken, cole slaw, and baked beans I just remember it being a humongous portion...their version of a half was my version of a 4 person portion hehehe. It was all SO good though. And to top it off, they started my addiction to Joe's Green Tea. YAY! 2) The woman taking our order was really helpful and super friendly wanting to know where we were all from, etc...cute :) 3) They give you a playing card (ours was a queen of hearts i think...) and when that card is called you get your order. I thought this was a unique/adorable touch to the place. And being able to eat all of this on wooden benches in the Vermont sun (yes it happens starting as early as May when I graduated :)) is so priceless!! As a note they dont serve alcohol but have no problem if you bring your own.
(5)Jason J.
We stayed at a nearby hotel having run the Tough Mudder at Mount Snow earlier that day and were literally ravenous by the time we got back. Six dudes covered in mud, sweat, and the tears of those who got booboos - all of us requiring BBQ. NOW. Once again, the Yelp mobile app does its thing and sets us down the street to Top of the Hill Grill. The line at the ordering window was long, but after an agonizing ten or fifteen wait we ordered and sat down only to realize that this place was BYOB. Dammit. Our orders came maybe ten minutes later and we tore into it like rabid hyenas devouring a rotting antelope carcase. With sauce. My beef brisket plate wasn't that great. The meat was tough, dry, and pretty flavorless. The mac and cheese was more than made up for it, and being as hungry as I was, I couldn't really complain. My friend's chicken/bacon/avocado sandwich was fantastic, but how could it not be? Combinations this perfect only come around every so often, like NBA Jam (Tournament Edition, obv) and Super NES. Service was friendly and we left full. The outside seating was nice and the view couldn't have been much better.
(3)Briana M.
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy!! This had to be the BEST road side stop for food I have ever experienced. Makes me wish I lived in Vermont.
(5)Kristen H.
My son and I shared a couple of plates so that we could try a variety. We really enjoyed the ribs and brisket. Collard greens were tasty and coming from Mike as well, that is quite the compliment. Not sure if the beans are homemade but they were delicious. yummy corn bread. We both enjoyed the scenery and vibe. I recommend spraying yourself down so the mosquitoes don't bite and you're welcome to BYOB. We loved it!
(4)Nancy C.
If you've never had southern or Texas BBQ, you might consider this place pretty good. My advice? Stick with the pork. The ribs are decent. Stay away from the brisket-- gray, watery, no smoke rings. The sauce made it edible but just barely, and the sauce could use a bit more kick. Word to the wise: bring your own beer. They don't serve it here.
(3)David S.
Burnt ends sandwich and their labeled root beer were both phenomenal today for lunch! Wish I wasn't just passing through town! My wife ordered the Paginator. Unfortunately, at 12:30 p.m., after the order was taken, we were told they were out of guacamole. As a result, she changed to the Patty Melt. She thought it was just average, and kept picking on my sandwich because it was so good.
(5)Kelli W.
Love the fish tacos! Great family environment.
(4)Jen R.
We stopped here based on a recommendation from a lady at the visitor's center and were blown away by both the food and location. I wasn't even hungry for bbq so we initially stopped "just to check out the menu". Famous last words! I was born in Louisiana and was pleasantly surprised to see cajun catfish on the menu, with collard greens, no less, and was tempted to give it a try. When I tell you..... WOW. I devoured my meal and found myself licking the plate to get every last bit of the chipotle lime cream sauce that had covered my perfectly seasoned catfish. My husband's brisket sandwich was equally yummy. So much so that we debated whether or not to order another meal to take for later! Instead, we decided on a piece of their humungous fresh made carrot cake. Excellent, as expected. Combine that with the extraordinary view from our outside table overlooking the water and the fall colors and I have no choice but to give this place 5 stars. Oh, and I can't forget the service! We spoke to 2 different people at the window (the second when I went back for more of the amazing sauces) and both were above and beyond friendly and helpful. Of all the places we ate on our vacation, I wanted most to wrap this place up and bring it back to San Diego with us.

I remember coming here when I was a kid and It being great but wasn't impressed with my recent visit. Their meals and sides are very good but the BBQ aspect leaves a bit to be desired. I got the ribs and brisket & was surprised to see the sauce on the side, the meat was pretty dry & just lacked any flavor which was disappointing and the barbecue sauce that did come with it just tasted generic like from a cafeteria or something. Since it's supposed to be a BBQ place and the prices are high I gave it a lower rating but If you're in the mood for mac'n cheese or mexican I'd definitely recommend it (really good burritos) The atmosphere is really cool and has a nice view of the river and all their specialties are drawn up cute on paper plates with interesting names. I hate parking in the lot though cause it's very narrow, crowded, & hard to get out of so I usually park next door & walk over.

Very cool environment, views, deck, the promise of great food. I ordered a pork burrito with no rice and what I got was a tortilla filled with refried beans, no pork. I have always considered rice in a burrito as filler and a cost cutting measure so maybe people are fooled when there is rice in it and it's firm. A flour tortilla stuffed with refried beans is not worth just shy of $9.00, with or without rice. I gave it two stars because the beans were good. Maybe they forgot to put pork in it? I didn't get into it with them because if you have a sign that says "complaints" that points to a cliff you really don't want to hear complaints. I'll give it another try in the future and try the bbq and give another review.

I really like this place. I went last October with my parents when they were in town and then again a couple times this Spring after they opened up for the season. The BBQ is pretty good. I liked the chicken and pulled pork a lot. A friend of mine from the South says the BBQ is mediocre but I guess her experience with BBQ is different than mine is being from the NW. So it's about expectations. Remember you're in Vermont. Enjoy the friendly staff, the nice atmosphere and the gorgeous view and you'll be fine!

The star is for the atmosphere, not the food, which was flavorless. I had the ribs which were a little over done and barely had smoke. They were overly dosed with sauce that tasted no better than store brand. The coleslaw was equally bad. Might as well have just been cabbage. That's all it tasted like. My wife got the brisket, again flavorless. We won't be back.

We stopped at this roadside BBQ stand for a great lunch on a road trip. I had the delicious pulled pork sandwich, and my husband had the fish burrito. The salad was perfect - fresh from the Farmer's Market mesclun. I didn't enjoy the noisy road behind me, but the great food and novel atmosphere more than made up for it. Recommended!

Went here one year after they catered our wedding. It was just as good as we remembered. I got a beef quesadilla this time with a small side of Mac & Cheese. The quesadilla had strips of brisket in it, chunky salsa and lots of cheese. Very good! The mac & cheese never disappoints and is made with local cheddar. The food takes a little while, but it's worth it!

This place is so Brattleboro! I think that I saw Jerry Garcia in line one time. You must stop here if in town. We order Heidi's Special, I believe is the name. Tempeh, barbeque sauce, potato and slaw in a wrap. Phenomenal! Suggestion: call in your order ahead of time on a weekend, summer night as the queue can build-up.

i've eaten here 2-3x times a year since it was opened maybe 7 years ago. great -- no, Stunning -- location, especially on a nice day, but since they built the pavilion in the back, even good on a bad day. John, the owner, has Great taste in music, and there's always a track of blues, cajun, or old time music running at a sane volume. i agree with most posters: the pulled pork is great, and the brisket often dry. i love the catfish. i cook Cajun, so maybe i'm fussy on that, but i find it mixed here, sometimes okay, but often the gumbo is pasty instead of a proper roux, and the jambalaya doesn't resemble the real thing (although it's tasty). most everything else on the menu is a win. a tip for those who think it's pricey: the pulled pork sandwich is practically the same amount of meat as the full-price plate, and almost half the price, and the wraps are all great deals; a lot of great-tasting protein for not much money.

The WORST food I have had in a long time. NOTHING here is BBQ, no smoke rings and NO FLAVOR! One word to describe the brisket & burnt ends.."YUCK!" Chicken was dry (dark meat) and just a bad flavor, with a teaspoon of sauce tossed on it to classify it "BBQ." Even my Snapple was warm. . Service was nice, but really slow. My vote, stay away.

Stopped in for lunch after the Brattleboro's Brewer's festival here. The smell of hickory smoke is what got my attention for this place from the street as I was driving by. Although I didn't end up getting any BBQ since their selection of creole food looked interesting. Its a nice roadside shack eatery. I thought their idea of giving you playing cards instead of a number was cute and would keep people from forgetting their number. I went with the the jambalaya and a side of mac & cheese. The jambalaya was nice and spicy although it was more like really intense dirty rice than a normal jambalaya. I enjoyed it none the less and the sausage in it was very tasty. There was no shrimp in it which I liked, but if your expecting it be warned. The mac and cheese was super creamy and tasted great. The location was very nice with a good sized deck with tables that overlooked the river. There was also an enclosed area to sit as well as a hammock. So the options were plentiful. They don't serve beer although the lady at the counter said they are BYOB and the gas station which was a quick walk down the street had cold beer in stock.

Ended up here after it turned out that most Brattleboro restaurants are closed for lunch, and I'm really glad we found it. I had a delicious veggie burrito ($6.95) that came with rice, beans, cheese, salsa, lettuce (proper, yummy lettuce - not shredded iceberg). My partner's mac and cheese ($6.95 too) was also great: creamy with a bit of sharpness (they use local cheese!) and nicely browned on the top. And they have their own root beer!

I've gone here a couple of times and each time was not disappointed. They have a great menu and each dish is full of flavor and fast service as well! I've witnessed the Top of the Hill Grill start its business a few years ago when it was just a grab-and-go, maybe one picnic table to what it has become today. It's quite an establishment and you'll find their pulled pork, fish, fajitas and pretty much everything on their menu is delicious and will keep you coming back for more. All my friends, my bf and anyone else that has eaten here will be able to attest to the goodness of this eatery!

I stopped here for some dinner on my way from NH to CT via rt 91 & unexpectedly found this gem! It's quick, casual, & tasty -this will definitley become a regular road house for me. The "roasted roots" (roasted root veggies) were outstanding!

We stopped through on our way back to CT. This place is just a couple miles off I- 91. A couple of notes: parking is a but limited and the line can be long. So, brace yourself for a bit of a wait. The good news is once you've ordered, your food comes out quickly. The setting along the water is nice and there's quite a bit of seating outdoors (they have covered areas as well). We order the beef brisket, jambalaya, Mac & cheese (adult size) & a Joe's green tea. Yes, we are from the south so I realize we have higher expectations of BBQ, but this sandwich or the jambalaya didn't come close to cutting it (especially for the price). Both dishes lacked any flavor-HUGE Bummer! Specifically, the rice in the jambalaya was not good, it was luke warm and was too spicy for me. The saving grace for our stop was the Mac & Cheese. Good gracious alive was it out of this world! Honestly, some of the best I've ever eaten. All in all, I really think it boils down to what ya order. And make sure to bring some cash, no credit cards accepted.

Wow, was this good. What looks like an ornate roadside summer food shack turns into a unique riverside eating attraction when you park and get in line. There's a friendly home-spun attitude without becoming homey or kitschy here. The food itself? Very good, and reasonably priced. I'll definitely come here again when I'm in town.

Solid food from the grill, quite fast and very original. I have had the pulled pork, the brisket and the Sloppy Joe's. I liked all of them. The meat is always very tender and flavorful, portions are very generous and overall it's very quick. If you decide to stay you can have a great view over the river, perfect during sunset. Cash only.
(4)David O.
First off - CASH ONLY! There is an ATM machine basically across the street. Second, don't know why this place is listed twice on Yelp, but I'm going to write two reviews. Third, what a great funky location. You sit outside in what feels like almost a tree house in the way it set up with funky music playing. The view is "OK" but not great, of a deep gully and some water below. Oh wait, the food? You want to know about the food? Had a smoke turkey sandwich, my dinnermate had the sloppy Joe. The smoked turkey was very good, could have used a bit more smoked flavor. The sloppy Joe was sublime, awesome, incredible, and it was oh so cheap. The corn on the cob we got, beyond incredible but nothing, nothing is better than good New England butter and sugar corn. The baked beans also very good. Great place to eat, would strongly recommend.

One of my favorite places to eat in Brattleboro, pity it's not open 12 months a year instead of just 7. Then again, absence does make the heart grow fonder, right? In my opinion John and his crew make pulled pork into an artform. Smoky, moist, tender. Covered in Top of The Hill's sweet, thick, smoky bbq sauce it's a bit of heaven right here in southern VT. The portion that comes with a pulled pork dinner is indeed generous, and this is coming from a big guy. The side slaw is wuite tasty. I'm not a baked bean fan so I substitute roasted potatos in place of the bean. Potatoes roasted with a dash of rosemary and some garlic. Fabulous-frickin-lous!! And let's not forget the cornbread...some of the best around. Occasionally I pick up some of their gumbo or jambalaya go have for dinner the following day. The gumbo is a must, full of zippy flavor. Food aside, the staff here is fast and friendly, the scenic vista one takes in while dining is awesome and John's music mixes are trendous. I've eaten Cajun in Louisiana and BBQ in all the southern states including Texas and as far as I'm concerned TOTHG is every bit as good.

My wife and I were going home to Connecticut and pulled off 91 for gas and a bite to eat. We were so happy we found theTop of the Hill Grill! We could smell the wood smokers before we saw this unassuming stand. We walked up to the window and were immediately struck by the menu that is all over the outside of the stand written on beautifully decorated paper plates. My wife got the brisket sandwich and I got the grilled cajun catfish sandwich. But our choices were hard because the menu was awesome and the smells were killer! Many slices of tender brisket on a great roll, delicious bar b que sauce, with more if you need it. Mine came with a large catfish fillet, perfectly blackened with a spicy chipotle lime sauce and lettuce and native tomato. Delicious! The grounds are awesome too, cool tables and chairs overlooking a peaceful water scene, a screen porch, even a hammock! To end our meal we split a huge piece of carrot cake (only $2.95!) Great experience, great food, nice kids working there and a very eclectic group of customers made our trip to the Top of the Hill Grill memorable and we will go back! Now, why only four stars, they don't take plastic or out of state checks, but that is our only complaint! Keep up the great work, guys!

I have eaten here several times, they have great baked beans and the bar b que is pretty good for this far north. I have been happy with everything I ever ordered, but usually go for the pulled pork sandwich or the half rack of ribs. The view from their deck is amazing.

Had the Pulled Pork with Cole Slaw-delicious. Casual atmosphere with a friendly staff- I was most impressed with the staff- very professional for a fast food establishment They were there to work-not chat and kill time like I have witnessed so many times in similar stores recently. Whether they were taking orders, cooking, cleaning or emptying recycling and trash they all had smiles on their faces.

Dissapointing especially for all the local hype about how great it is. I did like the BBQ sauce but my meat was pretty dry, and the sides were tiny and not a lot of flavor in them. Nice view though while your eating. Also not a very nice attitude from the help. I expected a lot more.

Drove right past it heading northbound. Once we came back around southbound we saw it right way. The day we went the weather was awesome so sitting outside wasn't an issue. There is very limited indoor seating. You walk up order your food and sit at a table. They call you when ready. We had the chili, quesadilla, fish wrap, pork plate, ribs, beef brisket, and mac n cheese. Everything was great except the ribs. They had a weird taste and not very meaty. Otherwise we would have given the place 5 stars. Staff was very friendly and prices weren't too high. Good place for kids. View of the river is pretty nice too. Very casual dress code. Parking is along side the roadway. CASH only and local checks. No credit cards taken.

Flamebait: I like their BBQ over Curtis's. Seriously. First thing is that they have a good, spicy sauce. Also they have some pretty good wraps and sandwiches. Their sides are pretty good too. The price is not super low but I think it's reasonable for what you get. The place is beautiful and is BYOB. I definitely recommend it if you're stopping by the area during the summer.

Driving south on I-91 from Quebec to New York City, we got hungry for lunch coming up to Brattleboro VT. This was the first interesting looking restaurant we saw after exiting the interstate, so we gave it a try. I ordered the smoked pulled pork sandwich and baked beans, and my sister ordered a burger. We have a lot of good BBQ in my hometown, Oakland CA, and I wasn't sure how it would be here - but it was great. The burger was great too. We really appreciated finding such good food completely by chance, and the beautiful view from the outdoor dining area made it a perfect lunch on a warm autumn day. Thank you from two hungry travelers.

This is another one of those upscale road stands that is so much more than a burger spot. Despite some higher prices the food is well worth the cost. A really varied menu and excellent BBQ sauce makes this a must stop. What sets this place up as a different place to grab lunch is the healthy options and great sides. You have to pull over and stop once Spring arrives and enjoy this place. One other cool thing to note is that you will be given a playing card when you order and your card will be called when your food is ready!
(4)Kim G.
I wish the food was a bit better....because their menu has such a good variety of cajon and creole. It's a good place to stop for a decent lunch, though. Indoor seating available in a little house, but the deck seating provides a better experience. There is even a hammock for lounging.

One of the few places that gets most of the stars for location. The view from the patio is fantastic. I ordered the brisket which was incredibly bland and unflavorful, though the the sides were quite good. My friends who got the pulled pork and burgers did much better. Great music, great location, byob. Would definitely come back to if in the area. Seemed a bit overpriced but so did most things in Brattleboro and this San Franciscan can live with that.

roadside smoked bbq fare just of i-91, or vermonts version of it. Wasn't in the mood much for eatin. . . got the half-rack of ribs ($12). Pricey, and not all to much to rave about. Sides cost extra. Ketchupy BBQ sauce. Star added for surroundings. . . decked scenic overlook with picnic tables, a nice break from the highway, but wouldn't eat here much if I was a local. beware the "pumped in" beatles music. Sneak in your own soda (or road sodas!). Next time, I order a burger, which I heard are pretty good.

Even though Mother Nature has yet to take the hint about the whole spring thing, seeing signs of life at this eatery temporarily abates the frustration I feel with snow being in the forecast in mid april! Overpriced, maybe. Mediocre sides, yes. But slappin' some pulled pork onto a grilled bun gives me a glimpse into the summery goodness that's to come. I love these guys for opening way early in the season and holding on until the bitter end in November. The catfish and jambalaya are tasty, too. My only tip- ask for extra bbq sauce on the side.
(3)Lily C.
I love the food at Top of the Hill Grill and the view over the river is beautiful. I love to get the turkey rueben and a side of the rosemary potatoes. The catfish is also tasty and I have heard good things about the pulled pork from my dining companions. My only complaint is that the food is pricey. I don't go regularly for that reason.
(3)tilla e.
I love this place. For the price, you get very good food and beautiful scenery. It can get crowded when the weather's nice. I've also seen folks do BYOB. The barbecue is decent, particularly considering you're in Vermont. The quesadillas are good too.
