Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

This place is solid evidence that you can get good Mayan/Mexican food even in New England. Geography ain't got nothing to do with it. It's not pretentious (unlike many other places in Bratt) and the food is good and reasonably priced. Service, excellent. Only complaint: the menu selection is not super large. But, hey, everything is tasty! Get a reservation.

Muy delicioso!!! And considering we are in rural Vermont, it IS as good as it gets. :) The prices may seem a little steep for Brattleboro standards but my party and I all stuck to the tortillas/uah;for una tortilla, that comes with both rice and beans it is extremely decent at $6.50 and proportions are muuuuy grande. I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything by not ordering something more extravagant. My sangria was more expensive than my meal! haha. The food was even more satisfying than the sangria and I can not WAIT to go back here with some more friends. I wasn't expecting much by way of Mexican cuisine when moving here from California but this typical Mayan faire is authentically amazing. Special plus side is that it is just up the street! Not to mention, no animal products were used in the making of my food. I'd still love to find a place where I can have chips, salsa and a decent margarita (my comfort zone) but I guess I'll just make that my place for now! Chips and salsa would be out of step with the authenticity of the Three Stones scene.

We now have evidence the route of the Maya ended in Brattleboro. This place brought back my memories of a trip I took last year called Route of the Maya. The tortillas were just like the ones I had right off the grill in Guatemala and El Salvador. All of the ingredients were fresh and deliciious. Everything had good spice and the the outdoor patio deck was superb. The owner and her mother wear their traditional Mayan dress and there are some photos of the mother when she she was a young woman that will spark a nice conversation if you let it. Don't let the exterior of the place fool you. What waits inside is a delicious meal and a beautiful atmosphere.

astonishing food, fresh ingredients, wonderful and imaginative tastes. i'm pretty sure they don't pay much in electric bills; Mucuy's smile probably lights that whole section of Brattleboro. Christian has done a *great* job of remodeling the interior, which is decorated artfully and playfully. the family is soooo friendly and warm and welcoming, they make you feel like friends instantly. and you just don't see this quality of food very often at any price, yet Three Stones is very, very reasonable. we stuffed ourselves, including dessert (boca negra, so good it'll make you weak in the knees), took some leftovers home, and i thought the bill was wrong at first, it was so low. we were seated near the kitchen (nicer than it sounds) and Everything we saw come out looked and smelled heavenly. i'd tell you what we ate, but it's irrelevant: i simply can't imagine getting a less-than stellar meal here. this is about as far from pre-fab food as you can get. well worth a trip -- we live 22 miles away, and are headed back soon!

Simply wonderful. This tiny, family run Mayan restaurant has a small menu and they do everything excellently. My husband and I sat at the bar at 8:30 on a Saturday - the rest of the place was still full! - and ordered: * spicy hot chocolate * a cheese empanada... I usually shy away from fried food, but it was fresh and not at all greasy. Delicious. * onzicil for myself (pumpkin seed specialty - A tortilla topped with sautéed zucchini and smothered in a tomato-pumpkin seed salsa, served with a salad, rice and beans). * a panucho tortilla for my husband (fried with shredded chicken and cebolla curtida which are red onions blanched with vinegar) * dessert: dulce de leche and a boca negra (chocolate delicacy with a hint of chili pepper). The boca negra pudding came out piping hot and the chocolate flavour was heavenly and rich. Yes, I have copied some of the descriptions from their menu online, because this was my first experience with Mayan cuisine and I wanted to get the details right :-) Every single thing down to the tortilla was fresh, light, homemade and just plain beautiful. The owners are lovely and the atmosphere is warm, cozy and friendly. They're open Wednesday - Saturday from 5-9pm and there are vegan/vegetarian options.

This place is amazing. The food is spectacular and the vibe is relaxed and friendly. My husband and I ate there on a Friday night. The tiny place was packed (you really need reservations), but we were able to sit at the diner style counter (with a view into the kitchen). I didn't see anything come out of that kitchen that didn't look absolutely delicious. Dinner -- Chicken Enchiladas with a special roasted pepper sauce (sorry can't remember the exact name). Fantastic. Cheese Empanadas. Super Fly. Flan. So good, I wanted to bathe in it. Main attraction -- Mamacita. Her name is Alejandra. She is pure awesomeness! In addition to cooking a lot of the food, she did most of the painting and sculptures in the place. I'm pretty sure she can do anything. Anything.

I decided to take my family to eat here based on the yelp rating and boy did my fellow yelpers get this one right! The Sangria was great and myself, wife, and kids all loved the food. My only negative is the on street parking. Check it out if you're in the area.

My dad took me to this restaurant after a skiing trip. I loved the tacos. The beans were spectacular. The bench was so comfy that I almost fell asleep. The caramel flan was a great dessert that I didn't share.
(5)Boulder And Pebbles H.
Delicious and fresh- totally authentic-fresh margaritas available would make it perfection - the chocolate dessert cake is unreal - a must for dinner when in the area.
(5)Ed S.
This is my favorite restaurant in Brattleboro. Family owned and it shows. When I eat here I feel as though I am part of their family. I have never had a bad meal.

My wife and I came here for dinner. From the outside you think this couldn't possibly be a restaurant. But, we tried it anyways. Inside, it's' a small intimate area. It probably seats less than 50 people. The menu is not the typical Mexican menu with the traditional items. It took some questioning to the waitress to narrow down what we wanted. My wife ordered the beef tortilla and I order the special of the day, chicken enchilada. She was so-so with the tortilla. I, on the other hand, was very happy with my enchilada. The only thin is that they only serve bee and wine, no Margaritas. And, they did not have fried ice cream for dessert. All in all, if you willing to veer away from the traditional Mexican menu, you would probably enjoy Three Stones.

Wow, amazing. Andrea and I just moved from Tucson to Brattleboro, and we figured that we were going to be skipping Mexican food for the forseeable future. But we'd heard good things about Three Stones, so tonight we went. I had two of the Uah tortillas, which are kind of like gorditas--fat corn tortillas served open-face, but flexible enough to roll up to eat. Yum. Being a vegetarian, I got mine with black beans, cheese, cucumber salad and hot salsa. The salsa was really hot, just like they promised. I also had some of Andrea's tomatillo salsa, which was milder, and very tasty. Andrea ordered a panucho tortilla and a cheese empanada. The panucho tortilla is a corn tortilla stuffed with a thin layer of bean and fried in a pan. She had hers with some veggie toppings and tomatillo salsa. I had a taste--it was good, although I prefer the Uah. The empanada was very tasty. Both dishes also came with a healthy serving of black beans over plain white rice. The salsas were very fresh, the tortillas tasted fresh, the empanadas, while a bit decadent, were not greasy. I was a little taken aback when I first looked at the menu because whether you get meat or not, the tortillas are the same price, but after trying them, I didn't care as much--there were a lot of veggie toppings. Soft drinks are very reasonably priced, and they have two very interesting-looking desserts, although both Andrea and I were too stuffed to try them.

Excellent food, friendly staff, unique setting. LOVE this place! Definitely recommend reservations.
(5)Carey E.
Authentic Mexican with a real Mama in the kitchen! We sat at the bar because there were no tables and had the pleasue of talking with the owners, a hubby and wife team who realized a dream by opening this restaurant. Everything was fresh and delicious and the atmosphere was warmy and cozy on a wintry night. Sangria was delish! I live in VT, but travel often, and this is worth getting off the interstate for! Enjoy.
(5)E. W.
Delicious home-made ultra-fresh tortillas, lots of filling choices, good beer, cozy interior; great meal, though next time I'll ask to substitute salad for rice and beans, delicious custard desserts; ask for extra hot sauces; worth a pit stop off I-91 Exit 1 - Canal street - head toward center of Brattleboro, will be on your left about 1.5 - 2 miles from exit. Call ahead - it's a small place.

I don't really "get" what all the fuss is about this restaurant. First, though, I will admit that Mexican food in general is not one of my favorites (don't get me wrong--I LIKE it--but when dining out, I generally choose something more unique or exotic). The menu at Three Stones is small. And by small, I mean SMALL, I believe there were three or four entree choices, plus one special. The interior is downright dumpy. So dark you can barely see what's on the plate, and I nearly froze to death from the wind coming in around the window I was seated in front of. I saw a diner at another table having the same issue. They are very stingy with the 3 sauces they bring to your table, they come in a cup (maybe 1/4 full) that is literally the size of a Nyquil cap. And if you order soda, it comes in the can. Not that I'm a "prissy" diner or anything, I love to eat at food carts, its just that with a restaurant that is so highly-rated, I had expected something else. Honestly, the best part of my plate was the fresh yummy salad. The rest of the food was nothing special. I am giving the restaurant 3 stars because (a) the service was great and (b) as already mentioned, Mexican isn't one of my favorites, so I'm trying to be diplomatic and assume that so far as Mayan goes, this place might just be as great as all the other reviewers seem to think. Or maybe its just that there isn't much to choose from in Brattleboro's food scene.
(3)Melissa M.
Exceptional home-style Mexican food - just delicious, homey, friendly, fantastic place! if you're a fan of Taco-Bell-style tourist Mexican, this is not the place for you. But if you value authenticity in both your meal and in your experience, go here. I cannot wait to go back again!
(5)Barry A.
Let me add that ( I was there again last night) a full plate of three chicken tamales (including balck beans and rice and one of the best salads in town, the other at TJ Buckley's) was only $13.
(5)Matt O.
I don't like Mexican food but the food at Three Stones bears no resemblance to any Mexican I've had. The food is the freshest and expertly prepared and served. My only fear is that I'll encouter waiting lines once more people learn about this wonderful eatery.
(5)Carol H.
went to Mayan Peninsula this spring and the food at Three Stones is as good as the best restaurant there. We love love love it here. Always Get The Specials! They truly are special. Reservations are almost a must.
(5)X O.
This place is absolutely fantastic. The only downside is, that it's only open from Wednesday till Sunday. The menu is quite short, but all dishes are very very well chosen. The ingredients are great, and everything tastes super fresh. I tried the tortillas with pork and one with chicken, and they were just fantastic. Juicy, flavorful meat and a great sauce.
(5)Lili R.
This is the best restaurant in town. Hands down. When my husband and I moved from the DC area, we were looking forward to fresh ingredients and food lovers in the kitchen... not so much. We have eaten at all the restaurants in town, by this point--including the fancy ones--and nobody beats Three Stones. This is where we take all of our out-of-town guests.
(5)Jean J.
If you haven't gone here I would encourage you to make you way into this beautiful mexican cuisine. This restaurant is pleasing to the eye, and invites all of your senses to enjoy this authentic cuisine. Definitely one to check out!

This place was great for a cozy dinner. It is a very small place so make sure you make reservations. When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly hostess who very promptly took us to our table. Our server was just what you look for when you go out. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and helped answer my many questions, and she was also attentive without making us feel like she was constantly over our shoulder. We started the evening off with some red wine. Their selection is pretty good and the prices are fairly standard. I was excited by the menu because after doing a fair amount of travelling in the southwest, I have grown tired of some of the more run of the mill Mexican dishes. Our server explained that some of the items on their menu are traditional Mayan dishes and I have to say that there were a few that I had certainly never heard of. I tried a sampling of their 3 different types of tortillas, which they then allow you to customize. I was particularly impressed by their panuchos, which are tortillas stuffed with refried beans and then pan fried. It was really a treat. I liked that it was crispy without being to heavy. The chicken and pork were both very tender and the veggies were very fresh. All in all, a very pleasant dinner that left us very satisfied. I will certainly be looking to return sometime in the near future.
(5)Joan P.
Unique and delicious from start to finish. Sangria for me, and the zucchini with pumpkin seed salsa. Our son enjoyed a tortilla and a chicken and cheese empanada, followed by the amazing chocolates dessert, which he shared a couple of bites only under pressure. The meal drained away the stress if our traffic-clogged drive and left us full, but not overstuffed, and happy.
(5)Brian R.
Had the empanadas. Tremendous! Amazing how they are so crispy and grease less. Flavorful filling (pork and cheese). Large portions too. Really wanted to try some of the desserts but too full. Will have to head back! Eat here you will not be disappointed. Family owned. Proprietor stopped by, very friendly and did everything; ensured that we were completely satisfied.

Real Mexican food! If you are sick of Americanized Mexican and want to try something delicious and authentic try the Three Stones. I think I might become a regular.

Had the pleasure of trying Three Stones for the first time for dinner on a Friday night. My friend and I did not make a reservation (though that is recommended), but arrived shortly after 5:00 PM and were able to get a table. The meal and service were excellent, and the ambiance is cozy and colorful. I had one of the daily specials, chicken mole served with black beans, rice, and a salad on the side. The mole sauce was easily the best I have had at any restaurant, and the beans were perfectly flavorful. My friend ordered the tamale and was just as happy (I will probably order that next time!). We didn't leave room for dessert or drinks, but what we saw at our neighboring tables looked phenomenal. It's not a cheap bite, but the pricing is reasonable for the portions and quality. I'll definitely be back!
(5)Denise R.
Absolutely fabulous. Not quite Mexican, but OMG, so delicious. Small in size, huge in flavor. Make reservations and save room for the Dulce de Leche. Fantastic!!!
(5)Jess W.
Best Mexican in Vermont, hands down. One taco is like an entire meal. But eating the two leftover for breakfast is dessert. Get them with the works- you won't regret it! The homemade salsas are amazing, and we will be coming back for dessert soon as well.
(5)Anna H.
There was a lot of hype about this place and I was worried that it wasn't going to live up to it. I am from Southern California and have experienced some very delectable Mexican/Central American food in my day. As the five stars suggest, Three Stones met the hype and it made my husband and I very happy! We made reservations, which was a good idea because it's a pretty small place. Once you walk in, you get a whiff of something that smells yummy and are greeted with a smiling face. The menu is small, but we wanted to try as much as we could. I ordered the chicken tamale (tamales are one of my favorite things in the world) and my husband got three tortillas - all three styles with all three types of meat. We also got a beef and cheese empanada on the side to share. Everything was delicious! The tamale corn was very fine and packed in, making it very filling, but very good. We decided that we liked the panucho style tortilla the best and my husband decided that next time he'd stick with the chicken or pork adobado rather than the beef. The empanada was very good as well. We tried both deserts and loved them both. The service was very friendly and it was apparent how much pride is taken in their food. All in all, a great dining experience that I look forward to experiencing again! The two hour drive from New Haven was worth it!
(5)Scott A.
I was in this restaurant the first night of service and have returned with great joy many times since. This is exquisitely clean and expertly prepared Mayan food. Forget mushy bean dishes smothered in cheese. Instead, think homemade tortillas, pumpkin seed salsas, roasted pork, chicken or vegetarian empanadas, mole (on the first Friday of the month), and save room for the Boca Negra dessert. Then, make reservations. You won't be sorry.
(5)Erin M.
This is a lovely little restaurant. I love the decor/ambiance, the service was fantastic, and our meal came out fast. The food was very good, but the menu is limited, and if you have any kind of dietary restrictions it would be hard to eat here. For example, there are only 4 options, 5 if you count the rice and beans plate, all but one dish had cheese/dairy, every dish had grains, but there were a couple of vegetarian options which was nice to see. One of the two specials was a vegetarian option as well. I had the pumpkin seed dish which was one tortilla with sauteed zucchini topped with a pumpkin seed salsa, a salad, and rice and beans. It was very good, I just wish my meal was hotter. My whole plate of food was warm at best, and cold after 10 minutes. I don't think the prices were that bad, a little expensive maybe compared to other places, but this is a small family restaurant making high quality food so I'm willing to pay a bit more. You can tell the family takes great pride in their work, and that's such a rarity these days it's worth going at least once to experience the love and dedication they've put into their food. I don't know that I would come back to dine myself, but that's only because my digestive system can't handle all the beans, grains, and dairy. However, I will most certainly recommend Three Stones to other people looking for delicious food and wonderful service in the Brattleboro area. Maybe I'll just come back for the sangria and hangout in the cozy bar area!
(3)Judy B.
Three Words for Three Stones: Some Kind of Wonderful! Best Sangria. Ever. Nice staff. Beyond Tasty!!!
(5)Whitney F.
I love this restaurant! I have been twice before and have never been disappointed. I chose the tortillas, 3 different ways. Yum!! The chocolate dessert is amazing. A very nice glass of malbec to boot.
(5)Alex P.
U haven't Ben here in a wile but I know they are amazing they have a deck a counter and a booth they are a bit pricy but they have amazing food soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooÂooooooooooooooo yummy
(5)Judith M.
Yes. I will go back. No, I will not go in the winter (it's drafty when they open the window in the kitchen, which I understand, but I ate wearing my coat.) Yes, I will order their awesome tortillas and their delightful specials and get some of that incredibly good deal on the wine. NO, I will not sit in the area staffed by the waitress with the worst attitude I've ever seen. I hope that she is working on her PhD in veterinary science because: a) She should stick to animals and avoid humans- (hello, eye contact or pause when you put things down on the table? No. You throw them down and walk away without comment - repeatedly- or a return to ask later- is this what you ordered? is everything ok? Do you need a beverage? Thanks.) b) it's the only reason not to take this kind of behavior personally, which is just not a good idea for my own equanimity. Maybe on a different trip I will feel like four stars.
(3)William M.
Great food. Mayan ' Not Tex-Mex. Truly a greatest in a unique atmosphere . A definite treat
(5)Professor Anonymous Q.
Five Yums. Do NOT judge this place from the outside or you will surely miss a great meal. Inside is a delightful little dining room and the tiniest of bars (seats six?), but the meals are big in flavor and size. Short limited Mayan/Mexican menu with a few specials each night. Problem deciding? Trust the waitress. It's almost a can't miss experience - at least we've never missed. Enchiladas, empanadas, tortillas, spicey salsas, hibiscus tea. Honest food cooked and created by honest restaurateurs. It almost feels like you're eating at their house, and we LOVE that experience. Works great as either a planned night out with friends, or last minute decision by you and the better half. Open only three or four nights a week, so call ahead and make a res. (They will usually serve right up until 9:00 - if they have anything left!)
(5)Arianne G.
i can't disagree with the statement "three stone is the best restaurant in brattleboro." i've only been there once, but my brother and i agreed the food was to die for; phenomenal was the word he used. i don't even remember exactly what we had but it was all amazing. all of it. we had some specials, and i believe the menu changes often. the desert was a spicy chocolate lava cake or something of the like. it was absolutely delicious. need to go back!!!
(5)Brian B.
Three Stones, how I love thee. Looking almost like a trailer home parked on the edge of a steep hill, neighboring an auto shop and gas station, it may not appear to be a destination, but is it ever. Three Stones plays hard to get with me, and it works! The number of times I've tried to go and it was closed outnumber the times I've actually made it in the door and received a meal (four to three!) But that's OK, they are trying not to ruin their "only a few people know about it" vibe. I've gotten the tamales, the empanadas and the tortillas on my three trips respectively. I'd say my favorite was the tamales, though there are no "wrong answers" here. The tortillas are pretty small for the price, and the other two options will be more filling if that's what your'e going for. If you sit behind the bar, you can talk to the nice owners and other regulars -- most hipsterish, hippyish, only-shop-at-farmers-market-ish expats from NYC ... but everyone's least annoying, best foot is forward because they are consuming awe-inspiring food so it's all good.
(5)Kate B.
Ahhhhhhhhh! What an amazing experience. The food was so fresh and delicious...but nothing compares to the sauce sides that are offered with the meal. So hot and delicious!! The owners are delightful and friendly :-) Make sure you get a reservation though!! There is very limited seating, and you won't get a table on a friday or saturday night if you don't have a res. Further update - I have been here at least a dozen times, and every single time deserves a 5 star review. The consistency is unbeatable. So is their homemade Sangria as well as their homemade hibiscus tea (a wonderful non-alcoholic alternative). Get the pumpkin seed plate, but if they have mole on special, definitely get that as well. We get the boca negra every time. To address the microwaves - yes I believe they do reheat their empanadas- because if they were cooked to order I;m sure it would be a 45 minute wait!! I've heard from the owners themselves that the empandas are made fresh every day though. Every time I come here I'm delighted. Bravo Three Stones!
(5)Charlie B.
3 Stones is a wonderful restaurant, with truly delicious food unlike anywhere else, a pleasant dining deck overlooking a river, and modest pricing. Oh, and the owners are a delightful old Mayan lady and her daughter. You really want these people to succeed. The food is fascinating - it may sound like totally standard Mexican fare (tortillas, enchiladas, tamales) - but it isn't. Partly that's because it's homemade, on the premises. But the combinations of flavors are specifically and uniquely Mayan. You have never tasted this Mexican food (I bet). We had: pork and cheese empanadas, crisp, very rich, soft on the inside; a chicken tamale, delicious; and panucho, a tortilla stuffed with refried beans, crisped in oil, heaped with shredded chicken and topped with tomatillo salsa. None of the dishes were particularly spicy, but 3 levels of heat of salsa were provided on the side. All the dishes came with a very nice sorrel leaf salad with cucumbers, and rice and black beans. For dessert we had yummy little Mayan coconut pudding squares, $1.50 each. The whole dinner, for 3, with a beer and a terrific iced hibiscus tea, including tip, was $64. A terrific value sez me. Go eat there!
(5)Matt M.
This place is nothing much to look at from the road, but once you step inside you know you made a great choice. We had the uah (a tortilla cooked on the griddle) with cochinita adobado (pork cooked in achiote, garlic, and banana leaf) with cheese, tomatillo salsa, red radish salpicon (a radish/onion/lime mix, and cebolla curtida (onion marinated in vinegar). I dont think you could go wrong by mixing any other toppings, meats, or variations on tortillas here. Once you take a bite, the flavor just explodes. I would come back to Brattleboro from NYC pretty much just to eat here again.
(5)Chris D.
Great find. Thx Yelp and reviewers. Yes, looks a bit drab from the road and parking is on the street or down around the corner in a public lot, but the inside was lovely and we ate on the relaxing back patio, seemingly a world away from the road. sangria and dos Equis were perfect and the empanadas as well as the various tacos with meats, cheese, Beans and various sauces were all excellent. They could spot check their salads for bad greens before plating, but they were great mixes with nice lime dressing. Not many kid options so younger kids won't have the usual garbage food, so be ready to give them a simple taco with beans, chicken or pork or rice and black beans. And the service was very pleasant and efficient!
(4)Nadav M.
Honest, fresh, delightful, reliably good food. Simple menu, enhanced by daily specials. Our favorite place to eat in Brattleboro. Eating on the outdoor patio in summer is a real treat. There are only two dessert options, but they cover the bases: chocolate and custard. Check the hours, as they are only open certain days. On weekends reservations are important. On weekdays you can often get in without much wait. The owners/hosts are gracious and welcoming.
(5)Chuck C.
Positively amazing food! The building facade will fool you. Good, otherwise we might never get reservations. The ambiance is very cozy and the food is just so very good. Try the hibiscus tea or sangria. Empanadas and tamales are my faves.
(5)Andrea T.
I have been driving past this place for a year now, dismissing it as a dumpy little roadside trailer with most likely a sketchy dirty kitchen... I couldn't have been more wrong. When you walk in, this little roadside kitchen is transformed into a beautiful and clean full service restaurant and bar. The decor is colorful and fun! The waitstaff dresses in black and the owner is dressed beautifully as she greets you at the door. We were two and were asked if we had reservations. We were lucky enough to be there very early (about 5:15pm, fifteen minutes after opening), so we got seated right away as the place was still empty. Within ten minutes, every table was full. So take note, **make reservations** as this place only has about 8 tables plus six seats (or so) at the bar. We ordered the Onzicil tortilla- A tortilla topped with sautéed zucchini and smothered in a tomato-pumpkin seed salsa. It is vegan and it is DELICIOUS! The dish comes with rice and beans and a very generous fresh salad with mixed greens, marinated onions and cucumbers in a light vinaigrette. The entree is $14. For drinks we ordered a red sangria *$7) and a hibiscus Jamaica drink ($2.50), which were both on special but after reading other Yelp reviews, seem to be offered very regularly. We will definitely be back for dinner very soon, and with the right planning we will take out of town friends and family for dinner here as long as our party isn't too big. It's a special place!

Three Stones was recommended to us by one of the Inn Keepers at Forty Putney, a local B&B where we stayed for a long weekend. Upon first glance, Three Stones is an unassuming local joint - a house turned restaurant nestled on the top of Canal street just outside of downtown. It's the kind of place that native New Yorkers like myself would normally steer clear of, but given that a local recommended it to us, and we were on vacation, we said "what the heck, let's go for it!" Upon walking in we were instantly greeted with friendly smiles from the entire waitstaff and a nestled into a cozy, romantic, and low-key environment - just what we were looking for. We ended up sitting at the bar (tip: make reservations especially on Friday nights, they only have eight tables!) which was completely fine. Being that I'm vegan I was so happy to see that they had vegan (and vegetarian) items. I went with the pumpkin seed salsa over zucchini and a fresh tortilla which came beautifully arranged on a platter with black beans and rice, and a salad with mixed greens, pickled red onions and shaved radish. To be honest I wasn't even that hungry given that I had been snacking all day, but I was able to clear my plate, the food was THAT good. My boyfriend opted for the two-empanada combo platter, one with chicken and one with pork, and practically licked his plate clean as well. We couldn't leave without him trying the dessert, a dark chocolate cake with a hint of spices topped with whip cream. I cheated a bit and tried a small amount, which was totally worth it. Picture a warm brownie melting in your mouth. You cannot go wrong! And while I'm not drinking these days, if I was, I'm pretty sure I'd order a gallon of the sangria, everyone else seemed to be guzzling it down. Dinner came to $55 (including tip) for two entrees, dessert, a beer and one amazingly refreshing hibiscus tea. Not too bad at all! You really can't go with with a cozy atmosphere, friendly waitstaff, and homemade food with fresh ingredients all found within a cute New England town.

An amazing meal at a place that does not look like much from the outside. We had particular dietary requirements -- dairy and gluten-free -- and there were ample choices. We loved a special on the menu - a kind of chicken soup with (intentionally) burnt chilies that was out of this world. Yummerific!

If you want the taste of authentic Mexican food while enjoying the trappings of New England charm then Three Stones in Brattleboro is a must. The house Special Sangria was a great way to start our meal followed my an amazingly colorful plate of food for the family. The portion sizes are not too large meaning no doggy bag. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and thanks to the great weather we are having in New England we were able to sit on their small but nice outside terrace.

Sorry everyone, this isn't California Mexican by any means. It's decent enough, but by no means mouthwatering. It fits in the category of "well, that was food, but nothing special". I don't understand what all the hype is about. Maybe just being a californian I'm predisposed to amazing Mexican. This was lame.

Good eats!!

It may not look like anything special from the outside, but I can't wait to go back!! This food was outstanding. Forget tex-mex. This is high quality, authentic, delicious Mexican food. Everything is prepared fresh to order from fresh ingredients. Together, the 6 people I dined with tried nearly everything on the menu (including desserts), and I would be challenged to name a favorite. It was all great. They did have a mole special that was out of this world... To top off the fabulous food, the sangria was also a big hit and the service was great!

Elegant hyper-authentic regional Mexican cuisine. Reservations required due to entirely understandable popularity, everything at a good price-point. Attentive but not invasive service. One of the places that makes the dining scene of Brattleboro a true cultural resource for the entire area.

Far be it from me to break the streak of 5-star reviews this place has but it has to be done... Pros: Cute building, great decor, tables, paint, etc. Very nicely done. Kid-friendly (there were 3 babies in addition to our 2 kids here on a Saturday at 5 pm). My husband mentioned I was a vegetarian (almost vegan) on the phone when he made the reservations & they made sure they had vegan tamales on special that night. The host (owner?) was super gracious & friendly when we arrived. We could tell he enjoyed being there. Always good. Yummy sangria. Was it the best I've had? No, but good enough for me to order a second. ;) The vegan tamales which were the special that night are freaking phenomenal. I can't remember the last time I had anything so flavorful & surprising. Seriously. So. Freaking. Good! And I dunno how they did it but the rice & black beans are something special. It's not "just" rice & black beans. I dunno what they do to them but they are yummy. And the salad was great too - very fresh with a nice light "flavorful without being overpowering" dressing. Cons: Our server was pretty indifferent. We always tip 20% and sometimes more if the server hits the basics: welcome, eye contact, friendly, brings out drinks, appetizers, entrees, & does the standard "is everything okay?" 5-10 minutes after the entrees come out. In addition to being pretty indifferent, polite but not friendly, she never came around to ask how our entrees were & we had to flag her down whenever we wanted something. The menu... So I know other reviewers said the menu is small, yes, but it's "enough" cause everything is good, well that's good for them but if you don't eat meat, poultry, or dairy like me, there's nothing you can choose from except a salad or a side of rice & beans. The menu could use one vegan entree & one seafood entree - I would LOVE to see what kind of fish tacos they'd do here. I bet they'd be spectacular. They only offer Mexican pudding & flan for dessert too. Both "meh". Price: so a lot of other reviewers said it was a "bargain". Ummmm no. $12.50 for a SIDE of rice & beans? I don't care how good they are, that's crazy. $12.50 for a SIDE dish? That's pricy in my book. We've had empanadas in Hells Kitchen in NYC that were $2.80-3.00 each. At $12 for two empanadas here, that's TWICE as much as NYC. That's pricey. And just cheese or meat & cheese are nothing fancy at all... Over all.... Will we be back? Yes. Probably without the kids tho. Our kids tastes are too simple to enjoy this quality of food. ;)

Ok so this place is like the best food in town. Passing by I admit it kinda looks like a whole in the wall that's gonna be mediocre but walking in you can tell right away it's going to be amazing. You can't find better Mexican food for these prices anywhere, I have never been disappointed with a meal. Get a reservation, because anyone who's come will come again. The people there are great staff is good and kids will be able to get something. The beans are really good and if they have it get the hibiscus iced tea it's cinnamon and sweet, but not to sweet, and just great. The portions are perfect . If your here you have to go.

The best food around! This wonderful establishment is completely affordable and the quality just doesn't get any better. Try the sangria!

We went here with high hopes, all the 5 star reviews made us very excited for our meal. The food was ok. The empanada was covered in too much cheese and sauce. The rest of the food was basic, and from the taste and sound of the microwave it appeared everything was reheated in the micro.

Even though the menu size is small, the food is good and filling! The design of the restaurant is a little bit weird when you first look at it but we liked the garden.

I stop here for dinner every year on my annual fall trip to New Hampshire and it has never disappointed. First, the wines are amazing! Second, the Mayan food is exquisite and DIFFERENT! Third, you just can't get a cozier ambiance with the tucked-in bar, tiny dining room with pillows, and artwork all over the walls. Fourth, they are gluten free - YAY!
(5)Amber L.
We considered not going here because of the limited menu, but my god it was delicious. The portions are small for the price, but they really know what they're doing. So good.

Amazingly good!! Best meal I've had in a long while. Don't judge by view from road; it's cozy inside and the food will blow you away. It is very flavorful. I love chiles! I had the special enchilada with tomatillo salsa. All the salsas were great, so was the flan. I will be a regular while in B'boro !

We returned for another delicious meal at Three Stones! Now whenever we're driving through Vermont we have to stop at Three Stones even if its an hour out of our way. It's that good! Make sure to get their chocolate mexi dessert!
(5)Jason E.
Make sure you make a reservation because a lot of people were getting turned away. The food was awesome and the atmosphere was great. For this one.. Don't judge a book by its cover. Driving by the place, it doesn't look like much but believe me it is well worth it. For under $50 we had 2 meals, drinks, and dessert.

My Vermont friends love this one a little more than I do, but it is still good. Yes there is a cutesy appeal to finding this Mayan Mexican place in such a hole in the wall location, but after the second meal I felt we had exhausted the menu and the food, while clean and tasty, can get a little bland. The pumpkin dish is the highlight and the sangria is reliable. Efficient friendly service and a great vibe from all the people who clearly love the place.

I found this restaurant using yelp. I went with no expectations and was delighted. The food was so tasty, it brought me right back to my days living in Panama. The food is fresh and authentic (and the sangria was yummy, too!) Will DEFINITELY return. Will definitely recommend to all of my friends.

Excellent fresh Mayan Mexican food. Great service. The servings are always large and filling. Definitely call ahead to make reservations as it can fill up quick. We have young children and they always find something yummy to eat.
(5)Fiona F.
Excellent!!! Do not let the outside fool you. It looks like a restaurant does IN Mexico. The outside is very unassuming. You may even drive right by. GO IN!! The good is delish! Fresh and not too expensive either. Service is amazing!! Definitely will return

I had dinner here in July 2015 while I was in the area on a work trip. The atmosphere was very quaint and cozy. The service was friendly and attentive. I had the pork tamale which was outstanding and I had the chocolate brownie-style dessert which is one of their signature dishes. The food was prepared very authentically and this really separates this place from many Mexican restaurants in the U.S.

Tried this place based on a recommendation, and loved it. The exterior of the restaurant gives no hint of the gem inside. Glad we had reservations because the place is small and fills up quickly. The food comes quickly though. Very simple menu. Our group tried the chicken empanadas, the enchilada special (the pork and the chicken), and the pork tamale. Everything was delicious. All our dishes were served with a fresh salad and amazing rice and beans on the side. The dulce de leche was good but not my favorite. We also had the house sangria and a cucumber drink that was incredibly refreshing. If you are passing through Brattleboro, this place is definitely worth stopping in!

Why am I finding all of a sudden really good Mexican food in of all places Vermont!? I think I know why.. Excellent locally sourced ingredients, then you get someone in the kitchen who knows what to do with them and it's magic. Excellent tacos. Homemade. Say no MORE! A basic Uah for me, and off to the races with loaded pork that is so succulent it makes me cry. The chicken is just as good, but not really... cause the pork in this state is destructive to my arteries. Load the toppings.. get ALL of it ... the red radish touch is a great pickled snap to the flavors as well.. but what's the real winner? The salsas. These were some of the best salsas I've ever had. A mild that has cucumber wet freshness along with the tomatillo. The medium rich and meat, with the hot filled with chili and smoke not unlike Chinese chili sauce you'd find at a Chinese restaurant but far different and true to the cooking's style. Then there is the ultra hot. Really good too.. but I oniy dabbled a little. Small very unassuming little spot, but so worth the stop if you need a bite.

A few weeks ago we stopped in at Three Stones after leaving work and talking about this restaurant with coworkers. This was our first time dining here but everyone we spoke with highly recommend this restaurant. When we arrived we were warmly greeted by the polite staff and our waitress was incredible. We ended up purchasing their tortillas which were amazing and their empanadas were great as well. The quality overall was delicious and the only critique we had was that the beer we purchased was over the "serve by" date The prices here were a bit high but that is due to the area and quality of the ingredients. Being from a Hispanic family homemade cooking is important and this restaurant meets the build of incredible food.

As others are saying here, the outside looks like nothing special, but the inside is really pretty and cool, and the ambiance is great, attracting diners young and old. The hostess is a beautiful, friendly woman who is always wearing really amazing and colorful Mexican clothes. And of course, the food is amazing. I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. Be sure to make a reservation!
(5)Rick W.
Delicious and authentic food served by a beautiful and elegant owner who takes the time to explain the dishes, the craft and her own personal story. Be sure to make reservations, or take your chances at the bar where you are more likely to get to know more about the food. Service was excellent. Food was superb. Brattleboro is lucky to have Three Stones.

Amazing fresh food, tasty sangria and the most friendly service ever. Do yourself and your taste buds a favor and call this place for a reservation. It's family owned and operated and it shows in the pride they take in everything they do from the home made sauces to the super fresh ingredients. It's traditional Mayan food cooked just like they would at home and that's how they treat you, like you were a guest in their home. Slow down, and savor every bite!

This is always my go to place for dinner, excellent food ( I'm a huge fan of the tamales myself) and their cantaloup jucie is a must try.I guarantee you won't be disappointed! The prices are reasonable and the owners are wonderful people , the whole place has a very warm and cosy vibe. As far as I'm concerned this is 5 Star worthy traditional Mayan cuisine .
(5)David B.
Don't judge a book by it's cover, this is a wonderful place for an unusual Mayan food adventure. The outdoor seating is wonderful and relaxed. The menu may be limited, but everything they make is done right. The staff are friendly and attentive. This place is a real find!
(5)Sandi G.
This was a pleasant surprise ( thank you , Yelp). It is very good Mayan style Mexican food ( versus Tex-Mex)The menu is quite limited, the wait staff was very helpful in explaining . I recommend ordering whatever is being offered as a "special". You would also be wise to call ahead for reservations, as seating is limited.
(4)Rebecca D.
Although it was hard to find, once we arrived at three stones the frustration stemming from our GPS fail slipped away as we embraced a cool glass of home made sangria.... The portions here are extremely generous, the mood is soft and calm, and the wait staff was prompt and peppy. Did I mention their killer home made sangria? I just wish there was a way to take it home with me.

Delicious and authentic. Very cozy environment. Our waitress, Berry, was above and beyond good. We WILL make this one of our new go to restaurants. A MUST try!

There is not a lot more to say about Three Stones than what all the previous reviewers have already said. We took a trip to Brattleboro, VT for few days away from the daily grind. Looking for a unique and wonderful dinner, we found Three Stones and it did not disappoint! Since it was a Wednesday night in January, we were lucky and got a table without reservations (which are recommended). The menu is limited, but that is okay - the selection is perfect. I chose the tamale and was not disappointed. It was fantastic! The mixture of flavors made my palate tingle. Not one for hot, I went with the mild green salsa and found it to be a tasty addition to the tamale. Hubs ordered three tortillas, one of each variety. They were delicious, although the ground beef was his least favorite. The meals were huge and very filling - no room for dessert! I had the red sangria and it wasn't bad, but not the best I've had. Hubs had a 60-minute IPA from Dogfish Head and loved it. Salsa note: I don't like a lot of heat, I tried medium salsa, but it was too hot for me. Hubs was able to do the hot salsa, but the extra hot was too much for him. If you like good Mayan Mexican food (not Tex-Mex Mexican), definitely give Three Stones a try - it will not disappoint. For just under $60 (with tip), it was a great meal! Just don't plan to use American Express (Visa and MasterCard are okay).

Head off the Main Street and find your way to canal street to Three Stones! I had the chicken tamale and it was delicious! The restaurant doesn't look like much on the outside but step inside and you are taken away on a Mayan epicurean experience!
(5)Leslie R.
Excellent! Just like someone else posted, don't let the exterior fool you or you won't want to stop. Everything is fresh and delicious! Service was great too. Stopped here on our way to Burlington and would definitely go out of our way to come here again!
