Awesome find in a cool town. Cool tatted barista chick named Bam made us the best latte we've ever had. Maple latte is a must!

Took an overnight trip to Brattleboro and stopped by for breakfast before heading back to Boston. It was a Saturday morning and the cafe was pretty empty, so there was almost no wait. I had a maple latte for the first time and it was great: not too sweet, just the right amount of foam (but no foam art, so jealous of the photos I'm seeing here), yummy enough to make me forget about the below-freezing cold outside. And my cider donut was so good, I practically inhaled it. It looked pretty small on the counter but each bite was so delicious that one was all I needed. I wish I had one now. Bonuses: The staff were nice without being fussy or pretentious, the location's right downtown and near a ton of shops I couldn't wait to explore, and the logo is awesome. Definitely going back next time I'm in town.

After my review just 3 days ago, I received an immediate message from the Manager. I truly appreciated the quick response and her understanding and appreciation of my feedback. Today I received a pound of coffee from Mocha Joes and I am very thankful for the customer service. This being said I will be sure to give Mocha Joes another try the next time I am in the area. Everyone has off days, and perhaps that's just what I encountered! Thank you very much Mocha Joes Managment

This place has great unique drinks! Their maple lattes are amazing and the decor is so original =) I came here in the fall and spring and they have perfected the cozy/trendy coffee shop vibe.

best maple latte ever!

I found myself in Brattleboro a few days ago and in need of tea before Twilight Tea Lounge was open and so I came to check out Mocha Joe's. The reviews I'd read focused on coffee so I wasn't sure what the tea selection would be like, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a medium-sized and well-chosen selection of teas, various hot beverages including a delicious custom Vermont-themed mate, and baked goods that have vegan and gluten-free options. When I asked what was in the gluten-free ginger cookies, the woman at the counter pulled out a list of ingredients and let me look over it, which was absolutely wonderful. The staff were friendly and helpful and had no problems making me tea in my travel mug. I will definitely return on future visits. The only issue is that entrance is accessible only to people who can do stairs, as there are several steps down. It would not be possible to get a wheelchair into this space short of having people carry it.
(4)Sarah F.
Great iced coffee and a Maple Syrup Latte that knocks the socks off any Starbucks sugar filled frappa whatever. Next time I'll ask for it a little less sweet, ended up mixing both the iced coffee and maple latte, but most people will like the sweetness level. Darling little location in a charming old building.

*THE* coffee shop in Brattleboro. Down a short flight of stairs off of Main Street (below street level), it provides the perfect, cozy nook for proper coffee drinking. All of their drinks are made to order, and any of them can be iced. I have a hard dime deviating from is their iced chai -- perfect for a hot, summer day. Their baked goods are also excellent and would recommend grabbing either a biscotti or a slice of their coffee cake to make a complete event of it. The staff have always been friendly and helpful, quick to offer suggestions or give me a moment to take in the large and beautifully designed chalk board menu. One of my favorite things about Mocha Joes is the funky, local artwork that rotates through. It's almost like a funky small gallery walk. Go for the coffee, stay for the environment, and walk away with having taken in the art.

No breezy outdoor seating or river view -- but that's OK, Macho Joe's gets by just fine on the strength of their beverages! We found ourselves in town for a wedding and needed a kick to get our day going. I got an iced chai and my husband got the iced coffee; both were really excellent. We each got a pastry too. He was happy with his; I thought the coffee cake was a too dry, which was sad because it looked delicious. But we would be repeat customers if only we lived nearby!
(4)Justin P.
Delicious idea of sweetening coffee with maple syrup, nice little ambiance. Staff wasn't the fastest in the world but it was pretty good and the coffee was really great! I'll be back for sure!
(4)Sam T.
I'm so glad I found this incredibly awkward little coffee spot. Awkward because of the stairs situation that you have to walk down just to discover them, but once you arrive you'll see what I mean. They take incredible care of their ingredients, the coffee beans are fresh and each order is prepared flawlessly. I never thought maple syrup and coffee would go so well together; try the famous Vermont Maple Latte

This morning I stopped in at Mocha Joe's for a morning pick me up, and thought this little coffee shop was OK. This shop located in the heart of Brattleboro can be easily missed due to its location, but it is a place you should try out if you are looking for a decent brew. This shop is tiny, but it has a great seating area to spend time with friends. This shop also sells a ton of different pastries! The only downsides to my experience were the fact that when I walked in, I felt like an outsider. This coffee shop seems like a local hangout for a regular crew, and today I played the role of the new guy. The other issues was that I tend to be an iced coffee kind of guy regardless of the weather, and this shop only makes iced coffee in the summer. This wasn't an issue, but when I asked for an iced coffee, the customers in the store chuckled at me as if I should have known this rule. The employee making coffees was great and was patient with me as I looked over the menu. After asking him a few questions, he made me my coffee which was was good, but I had to wait until I got to work to put Splenda in it because they only had sugar. Overall, this is a good coffee shop with a pretty unique feel and rude regulars!
(3)Amy R.
I LOVE Mocha Joe's!! Whenever people come visit I take them there for coffee and a baked good. The coffee is incredible, both brewed and espresso, and they have local bakeries providing the most amazing baked goods ever - I seriously had the best muffin of my life here. Staff is always really friendly too. :) The lack of a 5th star is more due to the space they are in NOT the product - it is not very comfortable for staying there and relaxing or studying, it's a really cramped space and since it's essentially in the basement it feels a little dark. But I definitely still go because their coffee is just really great!
(4)Ali F.
Looove how cozy this place was.. Stopped in after dinner and was wowed by the coffees and pastries.. Wasn't sure what I wanted so the barista made a combo of my favorites. delicious!
(5)Hillary A.
The best coffee I've had state-side and pleasant servers as well! It was a great start to a twelve hour roadtrip.
(5)William F.
Comfortable little coffee shop that serves their own beans. I've only had cappuccinos here, but they were very good. I tend to like mine on the wet side, and Mocha Joe's seems to make them pretty dry, but the coffee quality is still top notch.
(4)Karla M.
I am an avid coffee drinker. By far the best coffee I've ever had was here! I've tried just about every bean and theirs is the best. I want to fly back to have a shot of espresso from here! Thank you for having such a cozy and wonderful place. Plenty of seating and coffee add on options that are only available here! I talk constantly about this place. Will go back!!
(5)Mr B.
Great casual vibe, amazing selection of green and black teas, fresh baked goods to meet your heart content, and co-op honey. Not sure what more you can do except infuse culture like open mic and/or live performances. Small space so not likely an option but this is a community hub for sure as it is loaded with flyers, pamphlets and awesome brochures!
(5)Ana R.
Mocha Joe's was my fella's hangout when he went to Landmark college. He's brought me back to Brattleboro twice since we met and each time, we have to go to Mocha Joe's. It's a sweet little place with great coffees, lots of yummy pastries and all that tree-hugging, granola vibe. I like that they have a fancy decaf coffee. Not every place gives a shit about non-caffeine drinking coffee lovers. Lots of people hanging out in the back writing their screenplays, etc. People bring their dogs, it's nice. Go there. They have soft t-shirts.
(4)Heather G.
Good coffee. You do have to go down a flight of stairs to get to the coffee shop. I actually skipped going last time I was in Brattleboro because I had a stroller and those stairs are narrow and steep. It definitely has a chill atmosphere though and seems to be a "Brattleboro institution".
(3)Gillian T.
Exotic coffee beans from around the world! So it's nice to try different flavors of coffee. We had the maple latte and Ethiopian coffee which was great
(5)Iona T.
On our way back from an epic skiing weekend at Stowe, we stopped in Brattleboro for a much needed coffee break. Energy levels were flagging after three days of high octane skiing and several lively evenings. At one point in the car on the way, the driver was the only one left awake listening to the BBC's flagship film review podcast featuring film critic stalwart Mark Kermode. (We were all awake however for his recommendation of the new documentary on Lance Armstrong which we agreed we'd all like to see). Having originally thought we'd get coffee to go, we liked the ambience and so decided to stay. The coffee drinkers amongst our party were satisfied, the hot chocolate lived up to expectations and the Earl Grey tea drinkers were pleased with the quality of tea bags used. Seduced by the carrot cake on display, we ordered three slices. The cake was universally acclaimed, but the frosting divided opinion as some felt there was too much (perhaps catering for the American sweet tooth) whereas others felt it was just right. There was further division over the decor in the restroom - a nice nod to the coffee culture, but brown perhaps not the best colour scheme for a bathroom. The presence of books in the coffee shop was welcome (and to be encouraged in cafés more generally) but could do with a wider selection - and board games or magazines would be a good addition. Overall, coffee and cake consumed - job done.
(4)Linda C.
Stopped by this cozy coffee shop on the way home after a full day of skiing at Stratton Mountain. I ordered a tea fog which is tea steamed with milk and my fiance got a hot chocolate with an artistically drawn leaf on top. Both were delicious, as well as the chocolate chip cookie we got too. It was pretty busy in here around 5pm, but we managed to snag a table. If I lived around here, I would probably be a regular. I would love to try other drinks on their menu. Definitely will have to swing by again when we are up in VT skiing.
(4)Nancy K.
I love LetsBeReal's review and agree with it. So I'll skip the griping about the clientele and talk strictly about the coffee. It's great. That's all you need to know. Especially the Kenya AA. 'Nuff said.
(4)Scott K.
I go to mocha joes a few time a week and I absolutely love their coffee, drinks and snacks. The staff are always friendly and quite knowledgeable when it comes to coffee. The only reason for the 4 star and why I don't go every or even twice a day is that service can be slow. it would be nice if there was an express line where you could get just coffee or easy to make drinks. I realize it takes a long time to make some of the coffee drinks but other customers end up paying the price with a long wait and slow service through no part of the employees just the setup. Other than that mocha Joes is great !!!
(4)John L.
What a great coffee place on the way back home from the beautiful Green mountains of Vermont. The location of Mocha Joe's is somewhat odd. It seems to be in a small basement area of some larger building. But once you go downstairs and take in the menu of drinks, it is quite impressive. Since we were heading home from a great day of skiing, I got a hot chocolate and my girlfriend got a tea fog which was tea with steamed milk. My hot chocolate came with a cool looking leaf design. We also ordered a chocolate chip cookie which was delicious as well. The only gripe I have is that it doesn't open early enough so we can get a cup of coffee on the way TO the mountain...
(4)Yahn C.
Great coffee shop. I stop here every time I am in Brattleboro. They have some good coffee and make a great expresso. The store itself has this really cool vibe, makes you feel like the people making your drink are coffee experts or something. I highly recommend it if you're in the area and looking for a caffeine boost.
(5)Mike M.
On an epic New England/Quebec road-trip vacation, I found this place on yelp and stopped-in for a morning jolt. I like to support the local shops, and found this location with a steady line of locals. I got the dark roast, which was bold and had a very good taste. The ambiance of this location was super chill/cool, and I wish we could've stayed longer to take it all in. The lone guy behind the counter was smiley, helpful, and friendly. Next time I'm in Southern Vermont, I'll make it a point to stop-in again.
(5)J D.
Go here often with my daughter. I get whatever dark roast they have on offer; she gets a kid sized maple steamer, not too sweet, not too hot, and they make it perfectly every time. There are tons of drinks on the menu and every one of them beats the generic crap you get a Starbucks hands down. The staff are some serious hipster types; usually they're friendly enough but sometimes the hipster thing can definitely grate.
(4)Dianna S.
Out of all the coffee places my husband and I tried on our New England honeymoon, Mocha Joe's was in the top 3. That's pretty impressive considering we were drinking coffee constantly. I didn't stay in the coffee shop long enough to comment on the atmosphere. However, the coffee itself was pretty decent. I had them make me a blueberry mocha. Granted, they didn't put enough blueberry in it to taste it, but it was not a bitter espresso like many of the other coffees I tried. Our bed n breakfast also served a custom blended ground coffee, which was pretty tasty as well. If I lived in Brattleboro I'd definitely be back.
(3)Katherine W.
I travel a lot for work and as such have experienced a wide variety of coffee shops. I cannot remember the last time I had such an awful cup of coffee. It tasted like what I imagine battery acid tastes like - an old, bitter toast that had been burnt, reheated and burnt again. Dark roast red eye, drunk black. Ugh.
(1)Jasson S.
The cafe is very cute and sits below street-level right on Main Street. There always seems to be a line and the staff takes it in stride and very polite. Atmosphere aside I was not impressed with their iced coffee. It was exceptionally week and tasted more like tea then coffee. I also found their incentive system a little stingy. Their punch card proclaims, "Any Coffee or Tea Drink After 10 Cups!" then in small letters underneath, "$2.75 Ma Value." :/ They have decent reviews here on Yelp, maybe I just need to try another drink the next time I'm in Brattleboro.
(3)Julie C.
Waaaay better than Starbucks and you are paying nearly the same price. Mocha Joe's is a bit more. Pumpkinghead Latte is so good! I simply loved the guy who took our order. He looked like he belonged in Portlandia. Hipsterville.
(5)C. E.
Epic wait for a terrible cappuccino. Perhaps the barista was new? The cappuccino was boiling hot with scalding, steamed milk filled to the top of the cup and only a little foam (this is not how a cappuccino should be made). Really awful. businessinsider.com/how-…

If you are a drunk, a drug addict, a sixty-something hippie, professionally unemployed, enamored with W.E.B. Dubois treatises, a high school truant, taking a break from panhandling, or simply psychotic, you will have found a comfortable home right here in the uninviting basement that is Mocha Joe's. Others will find this place slightly unsettling. Be clear and enunciate if ordering and using such complex words as "large" or "small", or enquiring about the coffee. These constructs are confusing to the typically disinterested (stoned?) and seemingly uneducated staff. Watch your step as well, as the entry stairs (down) and the various thresholds throughout are truly ankle breakers. Often not suitable for kids under twelve, our most recent visit featured a very young (middle school?) couple grinding atop each other on the couch. Otherwise... Look, I WANT to hate this place. And in fact, I DO hate the place, BUT.... they do make a good coffee drink, whether espresso, lattes or straight black. Chai needs more spices (try Amy's for a better chai drink). But, damn it, they do serve a decent joe, so ignore the customer base (if you're not one of the above), and forget the staff stupidity (count your change) and just enjoy the coffee... to go!
(4)Courtney N.
I recently visited Brattleboro and Mocha Joe's caught my eye. Very nice, smallish coffee place with an extensive menu. I found it hard to decide! I ended up going with a banana chocolate iced coffee. Very decadent and rich. The price was great. The wait wasn't too long and the service was pleasant. Looked to be a very popular place. I'll stop by the next time I'm in the area for sure.
(4)Rebecca A.
So i went to grad school in Brattleboro....took a complete leap of faith and loved it. One of the reasons I loved it so much was Mocha Joes...a little slice of heaven! I was definitely there multiple times a week and for good reason. Initially I was drawn to the place because of the line out the door. You very quickly understand why. It was at Mocha Joes that I had my first proper machiatto (not the starbucks knockoff disgusting thing) and have bee hooked every since. They have good coffee (iced or regular), and espresso w/latte art, and my friends swear by their teas and ginger beer. They also have good fudge (I usually find fudge revolting fyi :)) But what I love most about this place is that everyone from the patrons to the staff are SUPER nice. They are friendly, warm, and definitely know what they are doing. The vibe is also pretty great. The patrons all chit chat with each other about random stuff, and you can literally just sit there and chill for hours drink or not and they leave you be. Pretty fabulous, what an awesome respite from graduate school craziness.
(5)Leo K.
They make one hell of an Iced Latte, makes it almost worth it to come down to the sketchy part of Vermont
(4)Marina S.
Delicious iced latte; definitely one of the best I've ever had. The crowd? Pretty damn sketchy though. I wish I had any inclination to come back to this part of Vermont, if not solely for that coffee.
(4)Toni M.
Mocha Joe's is a great little coffeeshop in downtown Burlington. The shop offers free wifi and the espresso and pastries are delicious. The shop is always full of local art and local people which makes for some interesting people watching.
(3)Leanne C.
My earliest memories of coffee and cafes comes from here. As a child, the Mocha Joe's label is what I attached to coffee because my father always had a cup in hand. Now, when I return home and make my stroll down Main Street, I always stop in here to get a medium cup of coffee- no milk and occasionally a dash of sugar. The staff are always strangers seeing I don't return home much, but they always greet me as a friend. Interchangeable faces but always a consistent small smile or kindness across their face. If you want a good coffee house experience, come here.
(5)Amber L.
I'm not that thrilled. When I asked about the coffee, they seemed to think that I didn't know how coffee works and I was like, no man...I'm asking about YOUR coffee. So I just got a regular coffee and I thought it was lousy.
(2)David M.
I dropped in hear mostly to use my internet and to kill some time while waiting for my car to be able to start again (long story). I ended up getting a chai latte and watching a game of chess being played next to me. I love the location (below street level), cozy feeling without being too small. The chai was a solid loose leaf variety, and all in all satisfying. The coffee smelled amazing. The best part, though, was the staff. They were incredibly friendly and efficient. I might have to add this to part of my Brattleboro ritual of falafel and used books.
(4)Gary V.
Beautifully crafted bar drinks and the best cider around. I see that some people have complained about the speed and atmosphere. These people have been tuned to enjoy the auto-produced crap that Starbucks shoots out fast and mediocre. Yes, I drink it cause in most places there is no alternative. The people at Mocha Joe's have to actually do more than press a button. If you want true quality it takes a little time. Additionally the fact that it has a unique and cool vibe should be an attraction. Do you really prefer the antiseptic mass-produced interiors of Starbucks that are the same everywhere? Really? Wow, I guess you do. Sunday afternoons it is crowded with skiers going home and that sucks but I also have to deal with the morons heading to the Hampton's on Friday mornings at Starbucks off the LIE in the summer and that is worse!
(5)Elaine F.
I read the reviews of this place and was excited to "check it out." Imagine how disappointed I was when I asked the server what the difference was between the Costa Rican and Brazilian blend and she answered, "They're from different countries." And this was the answer AFTER she checked with another server because she could not answer! If this wasn't bad enough, she proceeded to give me $2.00 change when she owed me $14.00. I think the servers/cashiers should receive more training at this cafe. On the plus side, it does smell awesome when you walk in.
(1)Ciel D.
I liked the atmosphere, and visited Mocha Joes twice again after my first visit this weekend. Its centrally located and has good hours. I liked the freshness of the food, the good bagels, and the coffee was fine. A bit strong, so I just added some water. I had a croissant sandwich, a raspberry oat bar, and huevos rancheros, in my three visits. The eggs are Vermont eggs, they use good cheese and fresh veggies. I found the service cheerful, and one young man today went out of his way to be amazingly helpful, and make sure I got what I'd asked for. Nice, nice fellow!! I enjoyed breakfast there, and there were sufficient tables and space, so that I spent a leisurely hour, reading and eating. It was perfect. Why did I not give it 5 stars then? Well the coffee was just okay, and one girl behind the counter was so loud, talking about her personal life and kid, it was distracting to me, across the room even. She seemed to be on every shift as well.....
(4)Ken R.
The macchiato is a work of art! 'Comfortable' is the best word for the place; 'varied' is the best word for the coffee; 'cheerful' and 'artistic' are the words for the staff.
(4)Courtney R.
Delicious chai latte and yummy caramel bars with chocolate chips. Romantic little spot for a coffee date!
(4)Jeri S.
Only worth the trip if you're passing through the area. The staff are either dazed, confused, high or all of the above. Ensure you enunciate the size of your drink, as the employees here cannot differentiate 'small' from 'large.' I find pointing at the cup size helps them comprehend - visual cue. The coffee is decent. The pastries are great, but I don't think this place can take credit for that... A local baker supplies the sweets. Atmosphere: atrocious Prices: Fair
(1)Ren C.
Italian style cappuccinos, lattes, and every other fantastic espresso drink you could ever wish for can be found here. The baristas are friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. And finally the location is something straight out of a beat poetry book - so cool! The beans offered are freshly roasted, no oily crap here. This is exactly what Specialty Coffee lovers want in a cafe. I recommend the Vermont Maple Latte, it will take you higher!!!
(5)Steven D.
Really good coffee and they are pet friendly!
(5)A Z.
Simple the best coffee roster in Vermont / Massachusetts. Maple latte is my favorite.
(5)Kate B.
I love Mocha Joe's - the coffee is superb. Only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that sometimes the service can be frustrating - however, this is only been my experience with one barista in particular. Everyone else is extremely friendly, vibrant and welcoming, and I usually have my order being prepared while I'm walking down the steps. I can't drink other coffee anymore because Mocha Joe's has changed me for life - keep doing what you're doing :-)
(4)Barry A.
I have to agree with those who have complained about the service in this coffee shop, and in this town. I love the coffee here. I have never had burned coffee or a disappointing cup. However, the service has overwhelmingly been horrible, with only one or two exceptions to my experience. Be prepared to wait in line while the ultra-hip barristas chat about love, partying, sucky tourists, and how they were ripped off at the antique store across the street. These are conversations I have heard while waiting in line here. One woman behind the counter ignored 8 people in line (me being one) while having an indepth discussion with some guy about how to oven roast a chicken impaled on a beer can
(2)Jilly j.
I'm a regular cup o joe kind of girl! Grabbed just that before my thrift shopping adventure. Super cute local spot w/ super fresh ground coffee and a chill local vibe ;)
(4)Bill C.
Oh God. So many hippies. And unfortunately the place is in the basement, and has rather echo-y walls, and it was (in October) full of fatter tourists and their screaming kids. I felt a little claustrophobic. No free wi-fi and only one outlet, so it's not a great laptop venue either. I have to give three stars because, well, the coffee was good (although EXTREMELY SLOW -- again -- hippies!) and if you are looking for this kind of grungy vibe, this is where you'd go.
(3)Daniel M.
If I had to live in Vermont I would quickly narrow down my choice of residence to two places. One would be Hartland Four Corners, because it's so beautiful and the other would be Brattleboro, because it's so funky and so Vermont. It's a small city with some cool restaurants and little places where you just might want to hang out and never go home again. And one of Brattleboro's true gems is a downstairs place on Main Street called Mocha Joe's. I like coffee, drink a lot of it, and really appreciate the effort its employees put into making satisfying, unique coffee drinks with the highest of high quality ingredients. It's got something for everyone, from traditional regular coffees to more exotic blends to exceptional drinks. Of late I have developed a taste for maple lattes and the best I've had so far is at Mocha Joe's. Starting with a strong coffee it's spiced up with a generous helping of maple - I believe they were using the more flavorful grade B syrup, although I'll have to check that. Although it's one of the more expensive items on the coffee menu it's so full of flavor and blended so well that it's clearly a bargain - and worth getting a second one. Yum. A couple of sips will tell any coffee lover that Mocha Joe's beans are properly roasted, NOT burned. There is a difference and it's noticeable when proper roasting unlocks the different flavors of coffee beans in a strong brew. Try that at a publicly-traded coffee emporium. Not possible. No trip to Mocha Joe's is complete without a baked goodie and my favorite is the raspberry walnut pastry. Cookies are fine but, similar to the coffee, I want to taste the many flavors in my pastry and the tastes of this complex item complemented my latte very well. Not too many nuts, no overpoweringly strong raspberry flavor and a smooth texture made it an excellent choice. Tasty stuff all around. Mocha Joe's probably warrants a fifth star but I'll wait till I have tried a few more varieties of its coffees and pastries. That will give me an excuse to go back, too.
(4)Daniel K.
Love Mocha Joe's. Support your native coffee spot. Keep the chains out of Brattleboro
(5)Cody S.
Located right downtown , the location and atmosphere is a bit down below. The coffee beans are better than their actual coffee drinks. They do charge extra for iced drinks(75 cents) , which is not something very common and makes the drink priced highier. I got an iced Americano and was not too intense and rather weak. On my second visit ordered a maple latte which had some pretty thick foam and no fancy latte art. Was expecting better for a coffee roaster. You can actually get there beans cheaper elsewhere. Not the cleanest or brightest shop but it is Brattleboro. It does have a hipster grungy feel about it.
(2)Margaret M.
I am a tea-drinker, and I like the cafe based on the fact that they have a nice selection of teas and are inexpensive. I had the Lapsang Souchong which was good but nothing spectacular. My sweetie had a chai latte, and again, there was no "wow" factor. All in all, a decent and clean place to stop by and have a quick caffeine fix.
(3)Cal F.
Nothing special in terms of the coffee- the Americano was rather weak IMO. But they did have some other fun, vermont-inspired flavor. I'm rating this place low, because I agree, "Meh. I've experienced better." more than any of the other choices. The oatmeal cookie was BEYOND OLD. .... like something that the reduced section of a bakery wouldn't even serve. I bet it was sitting there for at least a week. I tried to dip it into coffee, but yuck - it was still OLD and there was no way I could pretend it was biscotti. I'm astonished they even sold baked-goods like this, even if things aren't tasty, they should be fresh! The coffee cake was bland and dry as well. Not sure how this place is storing their foods, but I would not return here by choice.
(2)Boulder And Pebbles H.
Best drip coffee anywhere - always a stop if I'm anywhere in the Brattleboro area! Iced coffee is usually good as well but inconsistent-sometimes tasting old / dilute.
(5)nate r.
I'd have nicer things to say about this store if the waitstaff was less concerned with keeping up the appearance of feigned bohemian ennui and more concerned with, you know, their jobs. It's never clear whether the people behind the counter have any experience whatsoever operating the machinery or whether someone pulled from the streets of Brattleboro (one of America's top destinations for loiterting) as the line at the register grew. I'm beginning to believe there's a movement afoot to foist veganism on customers by consistently making the error/choice of substituting soy milk for real milk. Regardless of what comes in the drink which invariably will have taken the better part of an hour to arrive, it's frequently burnt, cold or at the least just served with an air of contemptuous disdain if you happen to have recently shaven or are not wearing hemp. If you need coffee, just go to Dunkin' Donuts.
(1)Wing M.
It's an okay coffee shop. The coffee is okay. The baristas aren't very happy to see you. The atmosphere is cute peppered with the random, smelly person coming in and sitting next to you. It's probably a great place if you smoke since I always see half a dozen smokers drinking coffee and smoking outside the place and blocking half the sidewalk. There's no wifi and not really a place where people do work. So, yeah, it's okay. Just not my kind of place.

As far as non-corporate, small, beatnik type coffee houses go - this is one of the best. Located sub-street-level of Main Street, Brattleboro - Mocha Joe's has some of the best coffee in town. It doesn't offer the modern amenities of Starbucks (which, in my opinion, is a good thing). It's a place to go to relax, enjoy a book or the newspaper and soak up the atmosphere. Check out the cool artwork on display or people-watch (cause boy can you see some characters coming up and down those stairs). Try some of their specialty drinks - they are very good...

At this point in our trip to Vermont, I was over small town independent coffee shops. This, plus the cold and rainy afternoon, may have impacted my opinion of Mocha Joe's. Mocha Joe's is a lot like every other small, independent, locally-owned coffee shop I've ever been in. It's got slightly above average coffee and a decent selection of pastries. The staff is tolerant of your existence. The interior is a collage of yard-sale and other second hand furniture and bad local art. I don't know, I guess I liked their Barack Obama t-shirts and coffee blend...not that it was clever, just a funny gimmick that caught my eye. Meh.

Cool, funky local coffeshop. The bf liked the coffee. Nice selection of coffee with beans from various countries. The vegan walnut brownie was pretty fantastic. If I lived in Brattleboro, I would go often. Imagine if they made even more good food...

Great iced coffee, and terrific chocolate chip cookies. The help is always nice to me. Just saying. I made a special trip in to get Sweetie Darling a cookie treat, the last time we were in Brattleboro. Yes, they are that good.

Great expresso, good place to play chess or read the news, but to be avoided when it's packed to the gills. Hard to pin down when is best to go. Service is good.

I love this place. One of the best places in the world to get a great cup of coffee.

I finally went after hearing all the hype; perhaps it has good coffee, but since I don't partake, I got hot cocoa... not that tasty. But the place itself is lovely and seems super! Maybe I will try coffee someday... and on that day this is where I would come!

Good fresh-roasted coffee at low prices. Friendly service. Stripped-down ambiance and no wi-fi makes for a nice break from loitering MacBook users like yours truly. Free secessionist-slanted newspapers to get your hopes up for Vermont as an independent nation.

The coffee is carefully-sourced, locally-roasted and delicious. The folks who patronize the joint are all close with each other, but friendly enough to newbies, too. They let kids and dogs in, but that doesn't stop the local town characters from coming, too... 'nuff said.

Don't let the corny name fool you, this is a great little coffee shop. The latte needed the extra shot that I ordered, but then it was quite good. Nice crema.

I sometimes stop in here to play some cards while sipping the mexican hot chocolate. During the summer though I will get a lemon lime fizz or a mocha Joy drink instead. Many consider it to be the best coffee in town and will drink no other. Mocha Joes is a fixture of Brattlboro life with both familys, business men, and hippie types all joining in for something to drink. I do think they should get a more variety of pastries and goodies though.

Stagnation destination number one up in Brattleboro, plus some fucking DEEEE LICIOUS coffees, including cups-of-excellence roasted right down the road on occasion. nicccee couches, often funky art. That permafried patchouli reaking dude in the corner has a 50/50 chance of being the artist. Good vibe, nice staff. ok, so QC on the espresso drinks is a little lax, but just fucking relax mannnn.

If you're tooling thru the eastern Peoples Republic of Vermont, no stop is complete for java junkies without MJ's on the itinerary. You have to take home your own beans, too. Recommendation? The stronger blends like the Brazilian espresso and french roast.

My review is for their coffee beans, as I never go into the store. On a whim, I decided to try their Sumatra beans purchased at a local store. Bottom line, the coffee tasted pretty crappy. I was surprised how light in color the coffee was compared to Starbucks Sumatra. Call me whatever you like, but Starbucks Sumatra is much better, richer and smoother.

Cozy downstairs location, fresh roasted french roast beans that glisten, interesting & changing artwork on display. It can be a little crowded on days like today when some bozo with a booming baritone decides to talk on his cel phone in the back (he was sitting there with nothing in front of him on the table and kept calling people and saying he was working on something for the next hour...) but this is a fluke -- really it's a great place to work or socialize. If you need a plug for your laptop, look up -- they're all in the ceiling. One strange feature is that if you're here at dusk, it always seems later than it is -- it's about 3/4 underground, and the windows open to the E, w/a row of buildings across the street. Going here today made me miss Brattleboro. Not to be confused with this place in Davis, CA yelp.com/biz/My4YWjxvlsv… which does serve decent coffee, but which doesn't have a tenth the charm.

A great place to get some tea and check up on your online life with their wifi. The atmosphere is cozy and friendly, welcoming everyone and their dogs.

a cool little place and i love what they stand for, i have to say it depends on who makes your coffee some were wonderful and some were ok. but over all a great place and always our first stop of the AM.

The majority of my undergraduate philosophy papers were written here (in long-hand of course) with a huge stack of reference books cluttering the tiny tabletops. I particularly liked this one little table that was a checker board- on occasion I'd shove my stuff aside and challenge one of the baristas (ok usually a friend) to a duel. With Waits belting his magic in the background, the most excellent carrotcake and brew, B&W photos from the local kids or some "art" piece, a grinder with barrels of beans, you just can't beat Mocha Joes. The one star ding is for the fact that you have to take your smoke breaks outside in the cold- and Bratt can be F-ing cold.

I had to sign up for yelp to tell people how bad the coffee is here! I have been using yelp for years and NEVER felt the need to chime in on bad places cause i never thought it was worth it. But with Mocha Joe's I felt I had to warn the people. If you know anything about coffee and enjoy good coffee don't even try this place. If you like crappy, burnt, over roasted coffee that a bunch of flocking sheep think is good? Than this is your place! I actually gave this place 3 chances, all more unpleasant than the last. Never again.

Loved the Americano and amazing fresh baked raisin scone (it was heart shaped, how cute). Didn't dig the attitude of the cashier though, she wasn't very friendly and seemed annoyed when my friend asked for a drink reccomendation. But the coffee and ambiance were great, and I'm having scone-eating dreams, so def worth a visit :)

yeah, i'm giving it five stars. why? because they have good coffee. and i like sitting on the red window sill outside and smoking. you can read a free newspaper in there cafe area, which is small but a perfect size. comfy couch and a rotating cast of vermont type people. i never tend to linger to long there, which is good because you've got lots of other places to sit around in brattleboro and kill the day.

Great coffee made there or beans to take with you!
(4)Jen M.
Lemon fizz, chocolate monkey or classic cup of Joe, anything you order here will be awesome! Great atmosphere, I docked it one star though because there isnt much seating and its always like a sauna in there but hey, you cant have everything.
(4)Chris G.
This is a great quality coffee shop and is worth the stop if you are in town. Their coffees are some of the best I have had. The brownies rock too. The staff is there to make you coffee, not make you feel good.

Coming from Nor Cal and missing my everyday fix of my Starbuck's skinny hazelnut latte, I decided to drive into town and check out this infamous Mocha Joe's that all the Marlboro Music College participants are talkin' about. Luv the quaint small town feel of Brattleboro & the "BeetleJuice" look/feel of town, and the people in Vermont are *SO* friendly. It's been refreshing to walk down the street and actually have strangers look you in the eye and say "hello." Mocha Joe's is located off busy Main Street, below street level, so walking down the staircase into the coffeeshop reminds me of my fav coffeehouse in London. Right away I noticed that prices are decent, pastries look enticing, (I really appreciate how ppl in Vermont are so veg & vegan friendly!) and my skinny latte: well, can't say bad at all... Not Starbuck's, (most ppl would say this is a *good* thing), but there's pleasure in supporting the small local independents of coffeehouse land. My friend and I found a table in a nook and talked for hours. This could very likely be our new saving grace. I'll be back Mocha Joe's! Luvin' my summer here in Vermont!

An amazing little local coffee shop with a lot of character and, of course, delicious coffee! Their pastries/cakes and hot chocolate are also amazing too. I must recomment the spicy hot chocolate.

Fun local coffee shop (although no wireless at this writing. sigh.) with a line sometimes going up the stairs and out the door. A small, cosy, subterranean space with beautifully roasted coffee and some of the most authentic-smelling chai I've smelled in a while.
