I was here for lunch on a Sunday. I had the prime rib which was good though nothing spectacular, though I suppose that is what one should expect when ordering prime rib. The salad bar was great, and reminded my, with fondness, of the Ponderosa salad bar as a child. Decent beer selection. I think I found the place a little pricey, for what it was, otherwise I might have been more inclined to 4 stars.

My steak was pritty good, I got mine med. well and I wish it was a little jucier. But your meal includes the salid bar. But I had great service. Enjoyed it with tge family.

Well we were almost scared off from a prior review but I knew from researching that they had outdoor seating and it was a perfect evening. We arrived about 7:45 and were lucky enough to snag a table on the deck with a lovely view of sunset. Our most excellent waitress, Kathie, was prompt, courteous and had excellent suggestions. My wife had the soup & salad offering, we split the crab cake appetizer and I had the stuffed trout (a special offering that night). Our food was served in precise order, service was attentive and not overbearing. The food was very good and we very much enjoyed our first trip to the Publyk House.

Aside from the spelling of the name, there's nothing askew here! I called the Publyk House up as a pinch hitter for our old standby, Madison's. I reserved a table for four but reservations weren't needed. Plenty of free tables but I'm not sure why. Great food, great wine and beer selection and a decent atmosphere. The Cajun Shrimp pasta was excellent. A little spicy, and made better with chili flakes. Just the right portion of pasta for the price. There were 8 larger shrimp and they were cooked to perfection Also, a trip to the salad bar is included with every entree, yum! I was disappointed with the calamari we ordered as an appetizer. While the zesty side sauce was tasty, the calamari was overlooked and rubbery. Not worth the money. A great option in the Bennington, VT area.

Great views and antiques. The warm maple whole wheat loaf was a pleasant surprise. The salad bar was just as awesome as all the comments said. Fresh and well maintained. Our comfort foods for dinner were the liver and meatloaf. So tasty. Really better than expected. Yummy Vermont cheddar mashed potatoes. Excellent green beans. Topped off with strawberry shortcake. Very good staff. Pleasant experience. Not pricey.

Really liked this place. My food was perfect. Salad bar is included with all meals. It's a nice big place and we had like 12 people with us and were easily accommodated.

Oh dear, this trip with friends (after recommending the fried oysters) was a huge disappointment. The fried oysters were not even good. The batter was falling off of them , and they did not look or taste fresh. The prime rib was fair, and my husband liked his special of a Seafood Kabob. He is not fussy. The tiny loaf of warm bread is just okay, though the maple butter is yummy. Nuns of Newskete Kahlua cheesecake is divine...but $7.00 for a mere sliver seems high. It's such a great building, we just wish the food was better.

Went on a weekend trip to VT. and decided to try this place out. We ordered our food to go. The steak was great cooked just as we had requested. The appetizer Twin Crab Cakes with Aoli left something to be desired. They were so-so, I wouldn't suggest it. Overall our meals were great.

I loved this place. The service is awesome and the view is gorgeous. The maple butter is delicious. If I am ever in the area again, I will go in a heartbeat. Don't miss this place.

Excellent food and service! Stopped in after day at Stratton Mountain based on reviews. Rustic, country decor, fires roaring and comfort food. Portions were large and each entree came with access to the salad bar. Before the meal each table gets fresh bread and maple butter. Will definitely return and recommend!

Amazing! A beautiful restaurant that serves impressive food. Definitely a treasure of Bennington, Vermont. My Husband ordered the strip steak and I had a turkey dinner. The steak was prepared perfectly and my turkey was moist and, delicious. You've got,to try this place!

We regularly vacation in the greater Bennington area. Three years ago we ate at Publyk House, enjoyed the food, and met the chef as he visited each table. Last year there were service issues, but a friendly young manager came right over and resolved them. This year, there were four of us for with a reservation, and although (or perhaps, because?) the place was quiet both service and food were awful. We started by ordering a bottle of wine after being told that our first choice was unavailable, but from then on the waitress who was apparently breaking-in a trainee clearly couldn't be bothered with us. For example, although the other waitresses were audibly telling every other table in the room to enjoy the salad bar our's never even mentioned it to us although we bought four full-price main plates (yes, of course we just got up and helped ourselves, but that isn't the point, is it?). Tuesday at Publyk House is half price bottle of wine night; it says so on the website, it says so at the hostess stand, and it even says so on the register receipts! But our waitress charged us full price. When it was brought to her attention she first replied that she doesn't usually work Tuesdays (no, we hadn't asked), and then when she (finally) dumped a corrected check on the table it was with the snide remark, "good catch!" But the food was as bad as the service! Two fish dishes were so deeply coated that it was almost difficult to discern whether there really was fish under all the breading. The green beans that accompanied each plate seemed to have spent days in cafeteria hot plate. And the $26 bone-in rib eye steak special with garlic and mushrooms was atrocious (yes, we did tell the trainee who promised to pass on the information, but never heard back)--cheap fatty, greasy meat that had been poorly cooked. And it wasn't just one bad steak, we know because two of us ordered it with the same experience. The waitress herself did (finally) come by to clear the inedible steaks, but made no comment on their being uneaten. No manager was apparent this year, and as we left the hostess who was doing paperwork at her stand noticeably refrained from asking ourselves (or the couple after us) anything about our dining experience. Likely she could guess the answers and didn't want to know; we won't be back.

The atmosphere, people, and view are well worth the trip. The food is fantastic. Local musicians are featured on a regular basis. They even have karaoke night. A must for all.

Overpriced loud noisy place! Don't go here expecting anything other than mediocre food that's very expensive! BF's steak was too dry-for almost $20, that's unacceptable. The sides were small, the baked potato was good, the green beans were al dente, not crisp! Green beans are NOT pasta! My Eggplant Parmesan was mediocre at best. The pasta was al dente, but the marinara sauce was sweet with no flavor! The eggplant was sliced too thick, had too much breading and far too much cheese. Maybe this for $17 is considered good Eggplant Parmesan in VT but in NYC this wouldn't be accepted at a take out place let alone a "fine dining" place. They've a salad bar which is decent. The 2 stars are for the friendly hostess, quick seating and edible bread.

I came in with a group of friends/actors and crew from the Oldcastle Theatre Company for trivia night. We were all mostly from out of town and were invited to come. The food was great and we had a blast. Awesome place! Oh! We also won trivia night. Pretty cool. ;)

I ate here for the first time in many years, and found out from dining companions that the Publyk House had been reborn under ownership by the same family that runs the Dorset Inn Bed and Breakfast. I was happily surprised to hear that, because I had stayed at the Dorset Inn and found both the accommodations and the food in the attached restaurant to be great. We had an equally good experience at the Publyk House. The food was great, with the prime ribs getting rave reviews, the salad bar was varied and fun and the tab for five people for drinks, dinner and dessert was quite fair. I left planning to do this again. Celia

My wife and I went on a Sunday evening in July. We sat on the patio. The view was gorgeous. The host and waiter were both pleasant. Our dinner was pretty darn good too. A fun spot. Note to All: Quite a few reviewers are making idiotic comments. When writing about a place, you have to take it for what it is, and this restaurant knows what it is, and does it right. It was a great Vermont experience, and I'd encourage anyone to go, sit on the patio, and have a pleasant dinner.
(4)Justin P.
The food is very good and is always fresh. You can sit outside and enjoy a beautiful view of the mountains. The salad bar is nicer than most restaurants. There is good draft beer available with many options from near by micro breweries. I come to this restaurant at least once every time I come to Bennington for business
(4)Michele C.
Great foods, great atmosphere, great views of the Green Mountain State, AWESOME salad bar, DELICIOUS homemade bread w/ homemade maple butter, solid service. The outside patio/its views are beautiful!

We had a great meal. Best part about the meal was our waitress Elizabeth. Great Service.
(4)Susan J.
Everything is quite delicious here and the salad bar is amazing. The staff is friendly and attentive. The view is wonderful besides. Wish they still had the free cheese in the bar area that they had decades ago!!!!

Came here 15 years ago with my grandparents so I have very fond memories of this restaurant. We enjoyed the view of the mountains and the food. They have a very nice salad buffet. I had the filet with blue cheese and carmelized onions, baked potato and veggies. Was a very nice dinner. Also enjoyed the bread and maple butter!

Oh em gee. Maple syrup butter. I can just drink that up without the bread. It doesn't help that their soft bread was delicious as well. This place fits the definition of being in the middle of nowhere in a town in the middle of nowhere. The view is beautiful though. I sat out in the patio for dinner. The sun was setting and it was a bit hot, though the view made up for it. The bugs however... there were flies buzzing around me and the food, and other types of Vermont bugs flying nearby. That, I'm not a fan of. It made me wish I had chosen to be indoor instead. The food was okay. My bf ordered the bacon wrapped chicken and I had the classic shrimp scampi (one of my all-time favorites). The chicken was very juicy. Plenty of spinach stuffed inside - which my bf didn't like, but I did being that it's one of the rare veggies servings I'll get being away from home for a month. For the scampi, they served me 6 jumpo shrimps along with many tiny ones. It tasted pretty good then and there. I took a lot home with me because I was too busy stuffing myself with the bread and butter. After reheating the pasta at home, there was literally more than half a cup of grease/oil floating in the plate. Quite disgusting. My favorite was, again, the bread and butter. Reminds me of the savory rolls and cinnamon butter at Texas Roadhouse. I'll definitely miss this about VT.

We were taking a little driving tour through New England and Bennington was one of our overnight stops. We were warned away from this place, but we ignored them relying instead on the glowing yelp reviews. What a dreadful mistake! First, the place looks like a barn, and when you're inside it feels like a barn. Dark. Rustic. Wood. Cheesy bar. And our worst nightmare...a salad bar. Let's start with the good. It had a wonderful view from the patio. Unfortunately that's it. PH is a series of chopped-up spaces. You have to walk through two of them to get to the salad bar from the patio, and they were both staff workstations. The bar itself wept from it's sadness. Everything on it came out of a pre-washed package. Nothing fresh or local. Mind you, it was July which is pretty early in the season, but their competition had PLENTY of fresh ingredients. It was also sloppy and unsanitary. Items had been dragged from back of station to front and slopped into the front trays along the way. Look, if I'm paying $90 for a meal (for two), is a fresh salad served on a cold plate too much to ask? One of us ordered the Blue Ox. The steak was not fresh, but thawed. While cooked exactly to order, it was hopelessly tough. The caramelized onions weren't, but a quick-sauteed imposter that were sliced 1" wide. They were barely soft. I made the mistake of ordering the blackened salmon with gorgonzola cheese sauce. The salmon was a dreadful pre-frozen thin filet that hadn't been thoroughly thawed before the grill, making it mushy and tepid on the inside. And what in the world made me think a gorgonzola sauce would pair well with fish is beyond me. It was dreadful. Both dishes were accompanied by "sauteed seasonal vegetables" which were pre-frozen too. If you like frozen food clumsily prepared, this is your place!

We had an excellent dinner on 11/25/13. Salmon was moist and flavorful. Husband had Baked Cod. Salad bar is very good and we got a loaf of warm bread at the table. Loved sitting near the fireplace. Service was excellent too. I would definitely return. Meals are a bit pricy but quality was worth the cost.

Coming from manhattan, it's an authentic place with good food, generous portions, draft beers, good service and reasonably priced. Meals include the salad bar, with all fresh veggies and more, service was excellent, very kind and don't miss the terrace at sundown, the view is beautiful This place deserves more than just a 3 stars average!

Out of the way place in Bennington VT. We were there on a Thursday night and it was busy, so reservations or arrive early. Rustic decor with a pleasant view if you sit in the bar. The salad bar is not extensive but high quality. Prices are relative. If your from the east coast you'll find them moderate. If from the Midwest you'll find them a bit on the high side. In either case, if you factor in the quality and service, it's an excellent restaurant and well worth the effort to find.

Stopped in route to Stratton... Great food, good ambiance, sat right next to the fireplace. We were pleasantly surprised with the whole experience!

The restaurant is once again The Publyk House. Moderately priced meals with good salad bar served in an intimate atmosphere. The Blue Ox Strip steak was excellent

We came all the way up from North Carolina and had a large dinner party of 26 people for an anniversary dinner. We had reservations way in advance and informed there checks would be split up, well apparently that wasnt clear enough because when we were all done eating we had to wait over an our longer while the wait staff sorted through the orders. Speaking of the wait staff they seemed completly lost the whole time, it was so bad we ended up leaving the table and walking out to the bar ourselves after the first 20 minute wait to get a beer. The people re filling the waters were out there walking around way more then the wait staff which was horrible. After the checks (which was only split 3 ways by sections of the table it wasnt some big thing) took forever I walked to the host station and asked where we could pay and the girl who was working was EXTREMELY rude and snotty but took my card and the check and stormed off i went back to the table and she came back and shoved the check at me and stormed back out of the room. All together we spent right around $1,000 i did not feel it was ridiculous on our part to expect a smile and the wait staff to well wait on us! I have never had to go get my own drink so many times before. On the positive side the scenary and the food was pretty good the food came out a little cold but that didnt bother me cause i understand theres a big group. All in all i would NEVER eat at the restaurant again and id highly recommend no one does...if i wanted the kind of service i got there i would have just went to Dicks Resturant. Thanks.

Excellent!we arrived with a party of 10,we had a reservation and were seated right away. The place was very busy, but the food and service were excellent. The cod was excellent, the shrimp scampi high quality, excellent prime rib, everyone in our party was completely satisfied with all their dishes! For a busy Saturday night ,we could not believe the quick and attentive service! We cannot wait to return!
(5)Stephanie C.
Not bad but not too impressive....exceptional salad bar but had the scallop special and had to search for the 4 that were served. The green beans and twice-baked potato both were cold. The others had liver and onions and pronounced good as its an unusual menu item. The fish and chips was huge and good. Service was good and it was crowded so call for reservations.
(3)Scott W.
Very busy. Had to sit in the bar. Just had crab cakes and lobster bisque. Both very good. Big place, lots of people. Not a beer drinker but had the pumpkin beer which was exellent! We would defintely return. Reservations suggested.
