Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

It's been a while since I've been here. Despite the restaurant's shortcomings it was still a haven of decent food in the barren culinary desert of Bennington VT. Decor and service were always fine and nice. The salads and bread were fresh and fluffy. My only problem was that the pasta dishes are always either over-seasoned in some way or they only hit one flavor note/are a big pile of one thing taste/texture. a couple of times the sauce was just too salty or too thick/over-saturated with cream to eat. If I still lived here I would probably come back sometimes but I would order with a bit of caution or maybe have sauces on the side.

What a pleasant surprise! My wife and I were passing through Bennington and on a whim stopped at Allegro. The fare is simple and beautifully prepared with fresh ingredients. The pasta we perfectly cooked. It was kind of late but the wait staff was attentive and friendly. They didn't try to hurry us out. Good simple Italian food, well prepared, pleasant quiet surroundings, a good moderately priced wine menu and friendly staff. We would happily return.

Came here with a party of 10 including two children for a pre-marathon pasta dinner. They accommodated every request making this meal absolutely perfect for everyone. They offered gluten free pasta, could prepare sauces without adding the hot kick, one member of our party needed very plain pasta to suit a sensitive stomach and all was no problem. Everyone loved their meal. Service was great. Lovely atmosphere. Def recommend.

8 o'clock on a Friday night and the streets of Bennington were deserted. However, as soon as I stepped into Allegro, I felt as if the town came to life. This place was so busy I was taken aback. My friend and I had to sit at the counter, otherwise it'll be a 45 min wait. Wow! The bread was so good we had to have seconds. That or the 2 of us were starving out of our mind. The bread was very good though. Being in front of the kitchen window, I couldn't help but hawk out for our food, as always. I had the rigatoni with chicken over spicy tomato cream sauce and it was amazing. It was spicy, creamy and very tasty. Half way through, it got a little too cheesy for me but I made it until almost the end. My friend enjoyed her clams and mussels over spaghetti as well. If I were to live in Bennington, I'd frequent this place. The atmosphere was warm. Though busy, I was still aware that I was in the country, and not a bustling city. It was a very enjoyable dinner.

My family and I have been big fans of Allegro for years, and we are glad it has survived the rough economic climate of Bennington for those years. The couple that owns the place is fantastic and always very welcoming. And to be perfectly honest, this is probably the best restaurant in Bennington. They have a good menu - my mother likes the spaghettini with clams/mussels, my father likes the alfredo, and I usually go for the locally-grown specials or the spinach salad - and a decent wine selection (we like the pinots). And for dessert, we always get the pot de creme (it's the best)! If you're in Bennington, definitely try Allegro!

If you are looking for food that has full flavor, this is the place. I can tell you that the bread is awesome and the food is above average in portion size and taste. The house salad was actually amazing. The process may seem a little high but once you eat the food, you will feel that you should have paid more!

Great food, wonderful atmosphere and they do GLUTEN FREE if you ask. I went for a 20th anniversary, and couldn't have asked for better. Try the mussels if they have them. The pasta with homemade fennel sausage was wonderful. Rich, but yummy. And the servers know their wine list well. Not too expensive, either.

So, let's just start with my bias. I'm 1/2 Italian, and was raised on Italian food. My dining companion and I ate a late evening mid-week dinner while traveling for work. We started with the roasted Brussels sprout appetizer. It was really good with caramelized balsamic vinegar and if I remember correctly garlic or possibly onion. It was delicious. This was the third time I have had this dish (all at various restaurants and once at home), I have to say I think this one was my second favorite (home being first). I felt it was a little salty, but I don't particularly like salt (I know that's sad, even worse it isn't because of health reasons!!). For the main course my coworker, a vegetarian who doesn't each cheese, was able to have a dish made combining ingredients from two other dishes- creating rigatoni all'arrabbiata. She said it was delicious. I had the special with scallops and shrimp in a creamy garlic sauce over homemade pappardelle. It was very very good. The scallops were sweet and tender, and the shrimp were nicely cooked. The pappardelle was nicely made and cooked al dente. The only issue I had with the meal was that I tasted garlic allllll night (bring a breath mint!). The portions were large, neither of us finished our main course, and we didn't order dessert. We didn't have dessert. The reason I did not give my review 5 stars is that we were ready for our main course, and the waitress asked if we were ready for the next course. We said yes. She began to take away the rest of the roasted Brussels sprouts. We asked her to let them remain on the table. She stated that the chef wouldn't send out the main course if they were still on the table. We resolved this by asking her to box the rest. This was odd. At least don't just take the food away without asking what we'd like to do with it. BTW, the bread they give you at the beginning of the meal services was warm, with a crusty outside and soft tender crumb inside. The atmosphere was nice, although it was weird seeing a patron using a laptop at a table. The decor was must more upscale for that to be occurring. On the flip side, every cafe in town (gosh almost everything in Bennington) closes at 6pm, so there aren't many choices to eat and work/surf.

I am a harsh critic of Italian food and was pleasantly surprised thinking there couldn't possibly be good Italian food in Bennington. I was wrong! The appetizers were good, not great, calamari ingeniously serviced with pepperoncinis, gnocchi which everyone else enjoyed (didn't try, not a gnocchi fan) and stuffed eggplant which was thin sliced and didn't have much eggplant flavor, but was good. I had the mushroom pasta, in a cream sauce. Good strong mushroom flavor and nice and garlicky, pleasantly surprising. My friend had pasta with spicy red sauce and basil (really good! stole a bite) and my other friend had the pear spinach salad which is not healthy but pretty good too. Not mind blowing food but I will certainly be back. As for the service, the waitress was pleasant and was happily fielded any joke questions we tossed her.

Fabulous restaurant in Bennington. They have a great wine selection and the food is delicious. We were in Bennington for work and our hosts took us here straight from the airport. This was just what we needed. We all shared the roasted Brussels sprout appetizer, followed by the warm spinach salad. My entree was the shrimp with asparagus. Everything was excellent. I would definitely come back if I find myself back in Bennington.

Great Italian with a creative menu. I had spicy chicken and rigatoni. Just enough heat without overpowering the fresh flavors. Nice setting and good portions for the price. Good date spot! And good wine selection.

FABULOUS all around! I have been told for many years about this place. A hidden gem in Bennington! Great food, fabulous service (thank you Anna), lovely ambiance & fantastic prices (where can you go & get a nice decent size glass of Merlot for $6.00 & an excellent Cosmopolitan for $7.50?) I am glad this place is not "in-my-back-yard", because this would be a place I would go to at least once a month. The portions are so generous, you will have lunch the next day! A definite place to dine if you happen to be in the Bennington area!

Awesome rabbit meatball appetizer. Rigatoni with chicken was over the top. Very rich, flavorful and fresh food. Food delivered is just as described in the menu. Happily not your common Italian restaurant . Only suggestions walking in the door, foyer was not appealing to the eye and the hostess could use some smiling classes. Bathrooms need some updating paper towel roll a bit tacky. Bring this all together and four plus stars easy to attain.

I went here at the recommendation of a local merchant who raved about it. I was VERY disappointed. I'm not a food snob, but the dinner we had was sub-par at best. We started with calamari, which was pretty good. Lightly fried with a spicy hoisin dipping sauce. The issue was when my entree arrived. I ordered the chicken with risotto. The risotto was glutinous, there was a burned smell to the chicken and the chicken itself was rubbery. Probably the most rubber-like chicken I've ever had. I never send food back, but this time I made an exception. The waitress was very apologetic and offered me a choice of the same dish or pasta bolognese, which my son was having. I couldn't face the chicken again so I went with the pasta. It was also a disappointment - the pasta was limp and the sauce was reminiscent of Chef Boy-ar-dee. I forced some of it down since I didn't want to be "that guy." Meanwhile, my son thought it tasted fine, but he probably inherited his less-than-refined palate from me. I really hate to give two stars, but that represents the kind of meal I had. In fact, I considered giving it one, but I can tell that they're trying to give folks a good dining experience. We were visiting the college so it was just an overnight trip. However, if my son chooses Bennington I know one place we won't be visiting for dinner.

An excellent choice in Bennington! My husband and I were really happy with the service here and the kitchen was super fast! We walked in at 9:15 ahead of a party of ten and our dinners arrived before they finished ordering. The party of 10 was also served incredibly fast. The pappardelle with mushrooms was as good as the pasta I had in Italy. The $4 house salad was very generous and the dressing was flavorful. Simply good food. Yum!

The menu here is well put together and priced right for the quality of the food. The inside is open and appealing. The wine list was excellent which made my husband and I very happy- it can be hard to get a good glass of wine around these parts at a decent price. The food was excellent and the service was well timed which I appreciated.

Very nice Italian restaurant in downtown Bennington. The pasta was excellent and the prices were very good as well. Clean restaurant with a nice atmosphere. Very friendly service and all you can eat bread with oil and vinegar dipping sauce.

Driving through small towns in New England we usually don't get this lucky. We were there early on a Saturday night and couldn't get a table (even though the place was fairly empty-reservations I assumed) so we sat at the bar. Obviously a place where locals go to spend their food dollars. The place was upscale, clean and tastefully decorated. Both our meals were fabulous. Service was courteous and prompt. The wine did not taste like it had been open that day but I can let that go. We ended up having a nice relaxing meal that sustained us the rest of our drive home.

We had a super yummy meal here for our anniversary last week. The eggplant Parmesan "meatballs" were crispy on the outside and appropriately gooey on the inside, the Arctic char was just delicious, and the Belgian chocolate pot de crème surpassed even my friend's glowing review. We will be putting this on our "excellent kinda fancy dinner place" list for sure!

Whenever we have something to celebrate we go to Allegro. We have only ever had the best dining experiences there: incredible, creative food; wonderful wine and beer selection; phenomenal service. Make sure to try the eggplant asparagus app-- to die for!

Delicious from top to bottom. I had the Italian fennel sausage with broccoli rabe on a bed of penne pasta. The pasta was almost too al dente but the sauce & sausage were so good it didn't matter. My daughter had skirt steak in mushroom cream sauce & that too was great -- great cut cooked to perfection. My wife had a special of pasta in mushroom cream sauce tossed with bacon & chicken -- also to die for. The Pinot by-the-glass was very good. The wait staff was great staff -- patient, friendly, good humored, attentive ... They have espresso.

We love to stop at Allegro when we swing through Bennington. Consistently the best food and service in southern Vermont. Reasonable prices, masterful execution, spot-on service. We had amazing rabbit meatballs, spicy chicken pasta and tender flank steak. Plenty left over for lunch tomorrow.

This restaurant was fabulous on everything we tried, which included a GF pasta dish with house made fennel sausage with broccoli rabe, mussels, salad and dessert. We are from Long Island, but we will definitely be going back if we are ever even remotely in the area.

I love to come in for dessert. This time I had Avogadro paired with Sambuca. Fantastique

Very nice experience here. Had rabbit meatball and rigatoni with tomato sauce. Both are flavorful and memorable dishes. The tomato sauce was especially fantastic. My friend said the food was on the slightly salty side, so if you like low sodium you probably wanna ask them to be easy on the salt. This place is about 40min away from the Mt Snow ski resort, so consider it on your next ski trip!

Went to Allegro last night for dinner after standing at Madison's for 10 minutes waiting for somebody to at least recognize that I was there. Anyway, walked down the street and "settled" on Allegro. I had a nice bottle of Chianti, a little restless but doable. Started with fried calamari which they serve on a balsamic vinegar reduction. The calamari was nicely breaded and fresh. I could have done without the reduction but it didn't hurt the calamari. I the spinach fettucine with wild boar. It was ok, nothing too impressive. I had coffee ice cream for dessert which they hand make there. It was a nice ending to a nice meal.

My wife and I thought it was great, good atmosphere and great unique Italian food.

Nice atmosphere with friendly service. Helpings are nicely presented but on the small side. Definite Northern Italian menu so don't look for any red sauce here.

I had a chicken-tomato-spinach pasta dish. It was excellently prepared, but little chicken - about 2oz. As a way of saying sorry the waitress didn't charge me for a glass of wine.

I was really disappointed by Allegro. My mom and I went there on a Tuesday evening. It was pretty dead. Yes, it was Tuesday but it was the kind of dead where there are two other groups there and the space feels way too big. The place was too dark and the ambiance wasn't that great. The foccia bread they served as an appetizer was really good but the gnocci I ordered was horrible. It was so bad I could barely eat it. It tasted all chemically. Mom on the other hand, loved her skirt steak so maybe it was just that one dish that wasn't so great.

I've dined at allegro during my labor day trip to vermont. Given that I'm italian I feel particularly qualified to rate an italian restaurant. My experience at allegro was very satisfying: my boyfriend and I had the vermont cheese and focaccia as appetizer (the focaccia was pretty good, one of the closest to the real italian focaccia that I have tasted so far) and then he got a steak (very well cooked and with interesting potatoes as side dish) while I had gnocchi alla carbonara (now generally carbonara goes with spaghetti and their version of this typical italian sauce is a little modified with the addition of peas and I think cream but who cares? the final result was pretty damn good!). Service was very attentive. I have been here only once but based on my experience I would definetely recommend this restaurant to a friend.

My wife and I stopped while passing thru. Nice atmosphere, good service, and very good unique italian food. The desert was great!!

My husband and I chose to give Allegro a try for our 22nd anniversary. It is peak leaf season here in beautiful Vermont and Allegro was VERY busy the night we went in. The bread we were served at the beginning of our meal was soft, squishy white bread, seriously lacking in structure and flavor and was served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Thankfully, it was all uphill from there! We shared the [house-made] rabbit meatballs with gnocchi and the eggplant - asparagus apetizers. Both were excellent. I enjoyed (but couldn't finish the very generous portion) the crispy chicken and parmesan risotto (risotto was a little bland, but the chicken more than made up for it) and my husband enjoyed a dish of mussels and clams with a glass of white wine that had a lovely fruity flavor. I thoroughly enjoyed a chocolate flan-like dessert while my husband opted for chocolate ice cream with a salted caramel sauce that made for a pleasing combination. We spent $100 (including tip) and an hour and a half enjoying our meal and experience of Allegro. Not too noisy, dimly lit but not so much that you can't read the menu, mellow atmosphere. I forgot to mention that the owners were called in to help (it was their usual night off) due to the high volume of customers that seemed to arrive all at once, and they both stepped in and seamlessly orchestrated the front and back of the house. Our waitress was very attentive.

It was fairly late on Sunday night and Allegro was open, so we tried it. When my appetizer arrived, I was surprised the chef even sent it out. It was a beet salad with cheese fritters, and the fritters were burnt on one side. Not toasty dark brown, but actually black. Because I did not want to make the dinner unpleasant, I did not send it back, but I should have done just that. The spinach salad with walnuts should have been served for dessert, as the dressing made the candied walnuts over-poweringly sweet. No one else in my party even finished their pasta, it was simply not that good. However, the bread was fresh. And the fresh plum sorbet was excellent! Tart and refreshing, with a granita-like texture, it was outstanding. But a dinner for 3 with no drinks and just one dessert, $100 is a lot for a basket of bread and one bowl of sorbet, which was what we ate and enjoyed.

For a small town with shit for restaurant choices, Allegro's is a breath of fresh air. The food is hand crafted and you can taste the passion that goes into making it. The wine list isn't super impressive but the prices are decent. The decor is unique and relaxing, service is excellent. I eat here every time I go home to visit my parents and enjoy myself thoroughly every time.
