You can't go wrong here!!! Went there Sat. night, called ahead for a table, which was a good idea. Got seated immediately. The food is incredible, my daughter had Lobster Mac & Cheese, husband had scallops, and I had the crab cakes. Everything was fantastic, BUT the icing on the cake is DO NOT LEAVE without having the Peanut Butter Parfait!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's like dying and going to heaven and returning for a second trip!!!! Highly recommend it, do leave without it, if you are full, take it to go!

Amazing. I've never had anything disappointing here. Fish n chips (best tartar sauce ever!), calamari, swordfish tacos, salads, pork burgers - all are great. I highly recommend visiting on a Tuesday night when you can get $5 house or black bean burgers (my favorite) along w their hand cut fries. Citizen Cider on tap sweetens the deal, along with a long list of draft beers. The desert jars made by the local culinary program are delectable as well.

Ate there on a Thursday evening, party of four. The good: My brother's duck burger was excellent, my husband's fish and chips was very good (fries excellent) and massive portion, my sister's salad was delicious. My scallops were delectable. Scallops cooked perfectly, with a nice browning outside and buttery tender inside, on a bed of light citrusy risotto. Cooking scallops perfectly must not be easy, because it doesn't happen often. I'd go again just for that. The rest: Our waitress was a little brusque but competent. My first glass of water smelled faintly of bleach, and we did have to ask several times to get a replacement. It was busy, but still. The replacement was fine, no off smells or tastes. Noise levels not bad. Plenty of elbow room between tables. Nice woodsy pub decor.

For the price of the meal, you would think this would be a better place to eat, but sadly I have been here 3 times and have been deeply disappointed upon each visit. First of all, the set up leaves a lot to be desired. It is extremely loud and conversations are almost impossible and the seating puts you close enough to other tables where waitresses have to squeeze by every few minutes. While the staff is friendly, service is very slow and often times you have a different person tending to you because your server is nowhere to be found. It once took 25 minutes to get a refill only to be given the wrong drink... As for the food, I wouldn't call it fabulous. The prices are high enough where I certainly wouldn't call it worth it and I have yet to be impressed by any meal I was served. Many times my food has actually been served to me cold and had to be sent back to be reheated. The portions on anything other than burgers are very small and we were even once told we couldn't have bacon on a certain burger because their chef at the time "didn't do that at lunch time" Overall, I avoid this place as much as possible. It might look nice, but that's about all it has going for it.

It's so rare (ha! Burger pun.) That we get a bad dish here. The wait staff is always professional and nice. The food is high quality American pub fare. The Mac and cheese is always devine. The burgers are perfect, the other dishes... Wait! There are other dishes? My only complaint is the onion soup is too sweet. French onion should be beefy and savory, baked under a broiler with crusty cheese. The excuse of a "sweet onion" soup that is easier to assemble is horrible. A good french onion soup says worlds about the beef used and the talent of the soup maker. The chowder is always great ;)

This is a great upscale pub environment. Lots of craft beers from various venues in Vermont and throughout. Solid selection. Nicely thought out menu of comfort based pub food. The burgers are flavorful and reasonably priced. The poutine was decent...nice scratch gravy that wasn't too heavy. The swordfish tacos were decent..I'd like them to try the same with ahi tuna....I think it would be a hit. I've tried their salmon entre...it was well portioned and flavorful. A couple minor downsides...it can be loud on a weekend evening...and equally. I found them a bit understaffed....so my waiter was a bit overstretched on one occasion. Overall...very good value for the food...and an eclectic pub style menu. I'd recommend. 4 stars

This lovely restaurant is a welcome addition to little Barre, where some of the restaurants have just been around too long and aren't that good. I really enjoyed my lunch, and the others who dined with me said their lunches were excellent also. Burgers, sandwiches and fish tacos all satisfied. The interior is welcoming and interesting, with local references in the artwork, and the service was friendly and efficient. Well done!
(4)John M.
Solid pub fare. Pizza, burgers and imaginative entrees. Where can you get a duck burger? Very good. Beer selection excellent. Waitstaff attentive. Atmosphere darkish and heading for upscale.
(4)Denise C.
Truly stellar burgers in a bright, airy, casual gastro-tavern venue. Lovely charred goodness with a juicy, well-packed patty, nice sharp cheddar, and a toasted brioche bun. The fries were quite good as well, hand cut with the skins on and perfectly-salted. Service was quick and friendly, and the prices were not out of line with any of the other taverns we've come across in our years roaming around Vermont. Big difference was that this place delivers a solidly good meal. Even the ice tea was above average ... so happy to have had other Yelpers recommend this place - and will be very happy to come back again...

This place was so good we ate here twice in one day! It's on the corner and looks deceptively small, but once inside the place is large. Two separate dining rooms, one with the bar. It's Decorated nicely and has a well appointed bar. Good wine and beer list and specials at lunch and dinner. Try a beer flight. For lunch I had a mozzarella tomato panini and the soup of the day, carrot ginger. They were both perfect, the soup being outstanding! For dinner I had the BBQ braised pork shanks with greens and the jalapeño Mac and cheese. Oh my god it was good. It was a huge serving that could have been shared by two. It didn't help that we also ordered the onion rings and the truffle fries as an appetizer!! I was stuffed. Great service also is the reason this place deserves a five star rating.
(5)Amanda L.
We had a fantastic meal during our one night stint in Barre. The swordfish tacos were a great blend of spicy and crunchy. The kids' meals were equally delicious, albeit a bit overpriced. Only 4 stars because it wasn't a great wait with young kids. A few crayons would have made a big difference!
(4)Nathaniel W.
As far as I'm concerned, you can't beat good pub food, and this is excellent. A terrific selection of comfort food dishes, ranging from burgers to pizza and even mac & cheese. Reasonably priced with a terrific bar and beer selection. Ate there for two meals on the same day. It was that good.
(5)NikkeyNDon C.
Delicious! Tons of flavor, good beers and friendly staff. The ambience is great as well. We live an hour away and wouldn't mind coming back in to town just to eat here.
(5)John A.
Got off to a slow start. I sat at the bar as I was by myself in town for a bike race the next day. The bartender was disinterested and inattentive to the point where I looked down to make sure I was still sitting there. She had her back to the customers for a long time. When I finally got her attention things improved. I ordered the Farmhouse salad which was very good though hardly a bargain at 10 bucks. The Scallops w Shrimp Risotto was quite good and fairly priced at 20. The atmosphere was a bit loud but tolerable. The beer list was very good. Worth another shot preferably w a more friendly waitstaff.

I went with a group of 6 on a Friday night, so this review is based on that. I totally understand longer waiting times for larger parties and even more so on a Friday night, but we waited about 45 minutes just to get our drinks we ordered. I got the Green Mountain Mule which was seriously disappointing. Why make a ginger syrup and add to (very, very flat) tonic water? Ginger beer is honestly the only way to make a good Moscow Mule. Our waitress definitely had too many tables to handle so we didn't see much of her. There was also a bit of a mix-up and one of six of our party members got their food about 10 minutes before the rest of us. As far as food goes, I got the Roasted Red & Golden Beet salad, which was very lacking in beets. I also got the fried calamari which was not too bad. For dessert, I split a cheesecake with strawberry sauce. It was just okay, nothing special. I wouldn't recommend this place and I won't be going back.
(3)Jenny C.
The bf and I stopped by here for one last VT burger before heading back to Boston. So, appropriately, we both got the Vermont Burger which more than satisfied our meaty needs. The burgers were juicy and tasty and...well what else do you really need in a burger. We paid the $1 extra for a side salad which I think is a little silly but, oh well, it's a dollar. I'd definitely come back if I was in the area again...the beer list looked fantastic and I saw some people ordering the mac&cheese which looked amazing, also.
(4)Steve L.
The food was varied, some good, some not so good. The place was so loud you could hardly hear the person next to you. Pizza was burnt. Some entrees were out. Arrived at 7:30 on Saturday night. Service was excellent. I might eat here again but there are better choices in Barre.
(3)Nina Ann T.
This is my favorite restaurant in Barre. My boyfriend and I eat here once each week. The atmosphere is great. It's a comfortable setting for a date, or to bring family/friends. It would be nice if it wasn't as loud, but you can definitely still carry a conversation so the noise level is forgiven. I have ALWAYS had excellent service here and I cannot count the number of times I have been in. The food comes out quickly and there is a lot of waitstaff so you always feel attended to. Additionally, the servers are always friendly and helpful! At this point, I have tasted almost everything on the menu and it is all good! My favorites include the BBQ Braised Pork Shank, the Swordfish Tacos and their unbeatable Mac 'n Cheese. My boyfriend is a big fan of their beer selection and the fact that the waitstaff is highly knowledgeable when it comes to drink selection. You really can't go wrong with a visit to the Cornerstone. If you're visiting on Thur/Fri/Sat, do call ahead seating! It's a popular place and there might be a small wait, but even if there isn't a table available right away there is usually space at the bar!
(5)Morgan S.
Both the food and beer selection is exceptional. Loved the Mac and cheese. They have Heady Topper!
(5)Bryan V.
Good service. Good food and presentation. We were riding motorcycles and stopped for lunch. Highly recommend.
(4)Eric S.
Once again Cornerstone delivers. Great food at good prices, well trained wait staff, and Mike the GM is very friendly and accommodating. As I told Mike last week- this is the best restaurant overall between Bethel, VT and Montpelier with the exception of Ariel's in Brookfield, which is a different experience.
(5)Brette V.
I love the fish and chips, however it says it's good for kids when that is not the case. I had lunch with my best friend and toddler who is pretty well behaved and there was barely anyone else in the restaurant so it wasn't like it was busy. We were not offered a high chair nor did I even see one to ask and there was no children's menu. I ended up having to eat with my squirming toddler on my lap and I shared my meal. Not having a children's menu is doable and not a big deal but I did not enjoy having him on my lap. He couldn't sit at the table by himself because he wouldn't have been able to reach the table. Over all disappointing for the prices.
(3)chris r.
We stopped in for a quick lunch and were rewarded with a long beer list and an excellent food selection. The haddock sandwich was very good and my husband was pleased with his burger. Adding a Heady Topper was just the boozy icing on the cake.
(5)Sarahmond W.
The Cornerstone is one of the best places I've eaten at in my entire life. I've been there several times now and have never been anything but amazed. Their BBQ Pork Shank is one of the greatest plates of food I've ever eaten. They also have an outstanding beer and wine list! Bottom line: The Cornerstone is a must for anyone who appreciates a good meal.
(5)Tyler C.
Great poutine if you enjoy that! Service is excellent and prices. Would defiantly recommend this to anyone looking for great food! I love that fact that some drinks come in mason jars and some of the entrees and apps come in cast iron pot. Always a great experience there.

I know this is early days, but i have been to the owners' previous establishments and i was expecting to be impressed - and was, very much so. We went last Friday after they had 3 or 4 nights under their belts and got there early (4pm) to make sure we got a seat at the bar. Started out with a Dogfish IPA draft and split some wings with my friend. Great wings, not too spicy, very crispy and plenty of them. No carrots on the plate, but plenty of celery. For a meal my friend ordered the Poutine and i got the Cornerstone burger, medium rare. The poutine looked delicious and the burger was cooked exactly as i expected. Even the bun was delicious (brioche?). Tasted all buttery. We had another pint, talked to the nice pair of bartenders (Mike & Mike) and were on our way after enjoying ourselves for about 90 minutes. The place is obviously clean and brand new, but one thing i noticed was how i saw people from all different demographics: me and a few others in jeans and carhartt coats, others in collared shirts and families with kids playing with crayons. Everyone was smiling and seemed to be as happy as we were. We will be going back - often!
(5)Dan A.
Nice place and good food, would like a more expanded menu. That's the only reason it's not 5 stars....
(4)Kristin M.
This place has been consistently good since it opened. The mahi mahi is flavorful and complex and the poutine is enough to warm your soul through. The prices would be twice as high if this were a large metro area--and would still be worth every penny!
(5)Sue P.
I had high hopes for this restaurant, but they were dashed. The waitress really should warn people that the steak and cheddar panini is served rare. But she didn't and when I had picked off the steak she couldn't be bothered to ask why. Instead, she seemed irritated and was barely civil when she brought the check. Add to that they were out of the cider I ordered at 1:00 in the afternoon and she was clueless about it. There's only one chance to make a first impression, and apparently they have so much business they don't need to try. I won't be back.

So there is probably some unwritten rule about not reviewing a restaurant the first day it throws its doors open, or even during the first week. I would abide by that, but I don't know what they could do better than what we had tonight. The only "complaint" I could make is that we agreed to a 30 to 45 minute wait, which did end up being 45 minutes, even though there were 7 open tables. However, I chalk that up to the staff trying to properly pace the tables on the first night that they are open and serving food. In any case, let me start with the restaurant itself - a warm, inviting space with low lighting, large windows and spacious seating. The bar creates a great focal point, and a fireplace in the room that can double as a private room adds and additional warm glow. It incorporates the historical nature of the building and of the town, but not in a highhanded "glory days" or "hometown pride" way. Service was really well polished for a first night - I I can't think of a negative thing to say in that regard. As for the food - it is the only thing that could outshine this great comfortable space, and it succeeded. We began with some of the best chicken wings I've had in a while, and set the tone for the meal: delicious food that has its roots in traditional comfort food and is executed extremely well. The wings had perfectly crispy wings surrounding plump, meaty and juicy meat. There was just the right amount of slightly spicy sauce on the wings, which were served with a few sticks of celery and some blue cheese dressing. The dressing might have been the only let down of the meal - I wish it was a bit thicker with a few more chunks of blue cheese, but that is a really small quibble, and not a problem, just a personal preference. For main courses, we had fish & chips and the Cornerstone burger, a 8oz Kobe beef burger. The Kobe beef is only $2 more than the regular Angus burger, and at $12 for Kobe beef, we couldn't pass it up. The burger lived up to expectations - flavorful, juicy, and fully of pure meaty flavor. When paired with the brioche bun, some cheddar cheese, and aioli, it is essentially burger heaven. It also comes with pickles, which are thinly sliced and also served on the side, and while I'm not a big pickle fan, these were pretty good. The fish and chips were all that you wanted from a good plate of fried fish and french fries. Fresh fish that clearly tasted fresh enrobed by a very crispy batter, fried to a dark golden brown. Moist and tender inside, crispy and crunch outside. Neither my wife or I are fans of coleslaw, but this celeriac slaw was crispy and not sopping with dressing - we both enjoyed it. The tartar sauce is not your traditional mayo with relish floating in it - it is mustardy with plenty of dill, and once again, even though my wife isn't a tartar sauce fan, she enjoyed it, with the fish and with the chips. Speaking of the chips, kudos goes to the Cornerstone for doing fresh, hand-cut fries, cooked until dark mahogany. These are what fries should taste like. Can't wait to try them in the poutine! Since we were indulging, we went for dessert as well, splitting the peanut butter pie, served in a small mason jar. It was layers of peanut butter mousse, chocolate cookie crumbs and chocolate fudge, topped with chunks of chocolate and peanut butter. Again, nothing "fancy" but exceptional in execution. I only wish I had a glass of milk right there to wash it down. Mix all of the above with a fantastic beer list featuring craft brews from the region and nationally, and this is one of the most exciting restaurants I've been to in Vermont, and there are many places that should pay attention to how they are executing, as there are lessons to be had here. We will be back often!

My wife and I had dinner at Cornerstone a few weeks ago for a long overdue date night. We got there around 5:00PM on saturday night and I'm glad we weren't any later because the place filled QUICKLY! Even with a packed house our experience was great. The service we received was so good it was almost like we were the only table there. For starters we each got a salad. They entrees at Cornerstone are reasonably priced, but don't come with a salad. They do offer smaller versions of their salads which is what we got. I got the ceasar and my wife the beet. Both were fresh and delicious. For my main course I got the braised pork shank with jalapeno mac and cheese, which was really good. The pork was fall apart tender and paired perfectly with the barbeque sauce. The mac and cheese had a nice jalapeno flavor, but only a hint of the heat. I even downed the collard greens which are not usually my favorite green. My wife chose the Angus burger for her main course and asked for it to be cooked through. When it arrived it was actually medium-rare which is fine for me, but my wife cant do. When we told the waitress about it she took one look, agreed, apologized and took the plate away. Within a few minutes we had a replacement plate with a perfectly cooked burger and new, hot fries. Mistakes can happen, but when they are taken care of with this level of service they really don't matter. I know a lot of restaurants that could use a lesson from CP&K in this area. Even with all the above, two desserts and a couple drinks our total bill was about $80.00. Considering the level of service we received and the amount of food and drink we purchased this is VERY reasonable. I really cannot understand why this place is currently listed as $$$$ here on Yelp. Its definitely $$$$ quality and service, but I would say its closer to $$ in price and you should definitely give it a try.
(5)Danielle R.
I have been here twice now and have not been entirely impressed. I ordered a burger the first time which was great but I found the taste may have come from the massive amount of grease in it. I literally had grease running down my arm. I thought the mason jars were a cute a touch and the setting is more intimate. But too expensive for me not to be satisfied with the food unfortunately.

A friend and I went here the night after Christmas; after hearing good things, we were eager to check it out! There was a short wait for a table as the restaurant was very busy. We ordered drinks (nice beer selection & reasonable prices I thought) and just planned to share a few things from the menu. The poutine: AWESOME!! Crispy fries smothered in delicious gravy, cheese and short rib pieces, served in a small cast-iron pot on a cutting board. Portion size was generous & presentation was lovely! Peanut-butter pie: WOW.. So good!!! This was the waitress' recommendation and it didn't disappoint. Served in layers in a mason jar, it tasted even better than it looked. Very rich so I'm glad we shared! Service was great & very friendly throughout our visit. As someone who was born and raised in Barre, it is so nice to have a restaurant like this downtown with great food and a cozy, welcoming and sophisticated atmosphere. Cannot wait to go back and try more food -- and I hope you do the same!

Barre is a community steeped in history. Like many downtowns, the onslaught of "big box" retailers and vanishing industrial jobs have posed challenges. That's why it is so nice, as a Barre native, to see establishments like Cornerstone opening. Every seat was full during our stay. The food was very good and boasts culinary touches unlike anything Barre has ever seen. With advanced notice, Chef Jesse LeClair gladly prepared me a vegan dish (bok choy and quinoa ravioli with tomato soy broth). I appreciated his creativity, as many other places would have given me pasta and a simple salad - traditional veg fallbacks. My appetizer was the roasted beet salad - darn tasty dressing! - minus the cheese. My mother had the pot roast flatbread and my wife ate French onion soup and beer can chicken. Both were delicious. Food presentation was modern by Barre standards. Portions were generous. Prices were also reasonable considering the quality of food. Ambience and decor are wonderful. The owners rehabbed a prominent property alongside City Hall Park and the Aldrich Public Library. My wife and I live and dine frequently in metro Boston; Cornerstone exudes just the right amount of big city sophistication while paying homage to Barre's blue collar heritage. Service was very attentive. We waited only a few minutes for our table, and the servers regularly checked back for drink refills (big pet peeve!). The co-owner and chef also made it a point to visit tables. Classy touch indeed. We enjoyed seeing several old friends, both who worked there or were dining in. We will definitely visit again when home. Cornerstone is a wonderful centerpiece for Barre's recently rebuilt downtown (think: Big Dig lite) and will undoubtedly attract those of us who crave a slightly upscale but unpretentious "go to" spot. I wish the team every success and hope this is a sign of things to come in the Granite City!

In short; it's amazingly good. I don't get up to Barre often, but now I'm thinking that every time I'm in Vermont I need to stop by this place. I got the barbecued pork shank with the mac and cheese, and when it was delivered by my server (name of Lou- very pleasant and on the ball, never pushy) he described it as 'Flintstonian." He was right, thing was HUUUGE. I'd been craving a slow cooked pork shank for days and days, and this place delivered. Perfectly cooked, falling off the bone with all that good, soft connective stuff. Absolutely awesome. My wife had the skirt steak, which was also tasty, but it was also not a pork shank so I paid it little attention. But the dessert, man. The dessert. a peanut butter pie served parfait style. That blew our minds. Absolutely delicious, thick layers of chocolate and peanut butter mousse and a cookie crust. Great stuff. I can't wait to go back and eat there again. I remember the burger looked pretty great, and I've read good things about the poutine. Cornerstone! Eat there.
(5)Josh J.
I've eaten here a few times now and the food was excellent! Great selection of beers also. The only bad comment I have is the noise level; it's kind of like Sarducci's in Montpelier. So loud, it is hard to have a conversation, especially for those hard of hearing. I think it is probably from the tin ceilings they have....the noise must bounce right off.
(4)Rose S.
Great American pub!!!! Fabulous layout, lots of space with a decent sized bar. Walk in and everyone greets you. Crazy number of beers on tap, all listed between two chalkboards. Probably twenty in total! Most are local, or from New England. I went with a Stone IPA which was delicious! And I got the angus burger and that too was pretty darn good. Cooked perfectly with melted cheddar cheese, and just enough stuff that it wasn't messy to eat. My friend got a flatbread pizza which looked tasty also! We went on a Thursday around noon and it was fairly quiet. I'd like to come back and see how it is on a Friday night or when a game is on! Nice to have a cool spot like this in central Vermont with a lot to offer for pretty much any occasion.
(5)Michael X.
Good beer selection and environment, but their menu is a little bit thin. Food is above average for the area, which is also reflected in the price. Overall pretty good experience.
(4)Bera D.
After our hotel fiasco in VT this place was such a welcome surprise! As a vegetarian I eat a lot of Mac and Cheese and the Mac and Cheese here might well have been the best I've ever had! There were several other options for vegetarians as well. The menu was short but, to me, that just shows that they're doing a few things very well as opposed to places that do a lot of things badly. I went with my mom who got the chicken salad, which she enjoyed. Her fries were excellent and my beer was wonderful as well! I don't know what it is bout VT that let's them make beer so well. Our waitress was nice and I'd love to go back!
(5)Aaron C.
My tip says it all.
(4)William K.
Six meals in three months, all excellent. Great service, pleasant staff, great beer. The wine list could improve, but my guess is that beer moves better, and that likely drives the distinct difference in those choices. Go, it is really great.
(5)Edwin B.
This place was great! Good beer selection, the steak was cooked wonderfully, the collard greens were great but the jalapeno bacon mac & cheese was awesome!
(5)Neil J.
We went by not knowing if they were open or not. What a great surprise. We had to wait as we didn't call ahead for the table, but it was a very pleasant wait, met some nice people. While we were waiting they took great care of us and got us a couple Margarita's from the bar. Note I'm using a capital, M, they rock, generous servings in a mason jar glass and they tasted great. We split a flat bread for appetizer, which really could have been a light meal for us. The potatoes, scallions and bacon toppings were really good, we ordered ours without the ranch dressing. My girlfriend had the "beer can" chicken. Please don't let the folksy name turn you away. This is very similar to the chicken I had at the Common Man, a high end restaurant one of the owners previously owned. It still amazes me, I tasted it, it's like I've never had chicken before, it's amazing. Makes me wonder why I've never had chicken like this in my entire life, and I've eaten more than my share of chicken, even prepare via beer cans, but nothing this good. Dinners were always excellent at his old restaurant and I suspect they will continue here. We went there steady for years. Personally I couldn't resist trying the Poutin, as I don't get to have it much. It was great, presentation was excellent, I won't get into the details, as it was fun and a bit unexpected. The atmosphere is a class act. Very professional, but casual. It's interesting, you would feel comfortable just having a beer, or if you are looking for some very nice dining, you'll be in heaven here. The menu reflects the same along with the mix of people. We've been out in Burlington, Stowe, Sugarbush Valley and there are very few restaurants that can compete..... its a great bonus for the Barre Montpelier area, truly a few steps up. We loved it, we'll be back. I'd be shocked if someone didn't like what was done here. It's so great to see a new business thriving, you can tell they really did their homework and know what they are doing. We'll be back, no doubt.
(5)L R.
If you build it, they will come! I have been a resident in Barre for 4 years, and I can't express how happy I am that the Cornerstone has arrived. We showed up at 4, as I heard there can be a longer wait at dinner. The atmosphere is modern and tasteful, I felt like I was in Burlington, not Barre!! They offer a large selection of local micro brews, wines and have a full bar. The menu isn't huge, but the sleek approach leads me to believe that all the ingredients are fresh. Don't get me wrong, they cover all the bases, every thing from soups, salads, smaller plates to entrees. I had the swordfish tacos and it was the most tender swordfish I have ever had. The presentation was wonderful, and they were loaded with fish and avocado. I could barely finish the two. My friend had the edamame burger, which was a vibrant green and served with HAND cut fries! Our server was friendly and prompt. Finally, someone is doing it right in Barre. We also shared the almond joy parfait (very good) , because they were out of the salted caramel ice cream. I had a wonderful dining experience and I hope to be back many times.
