I eat here every once in a while since I live a little too out of the way to come regularly. It's been 5 years though and even if I wait a year, Bento Mom remembers my name and everything we've talked about. I eat both the sushi and the PBQ/CBQ and they're absolutely delicious! Their dumplings are the best. Some people are taken aback and upset at Mama Bento's personality, but it's because she sees everyone as friends and family. You're not just a customer, you're important here. The food is delicious and I love the décor. So go and enjoy when you get a chance! I'll be heading back soon, I know it!

Best sushi, made with love! Got the best message from the owner and she also treated us so nice and taught us how to use chop sticks and the right way to eat a the sushi in a way that not disrespectful to Japan. She is truly a good soul! And it is truly good food! And tea the tea was amazing!
(5)TK B.
Momma Bento was very welcoming, her personality will take you back if you are a person that's to yourself. Otherwise, you'll love her. Thanks for showing me which order to eat the Sushi, how to use chopsticks, and how to make origami. Papa Bento comes out after you've finished eating to see if you enjoyed your meal. We did!! Honestly I didn't mind the wait. Monday, even when quiet, there was still a wait -- it's called preparation of fresh food. Would you really want 2 minute sushi?!? A suggestion would be offer warm black tea or cups of water and wonton/ crackers for customers to nibble while they wait. This will keep them at ease. Speaking of special teas, we enjoyed the tea MOMMA Bento made us. (Ginger and the Plum) We even took cups to go!! Overall, very pleased with my experience . Call ahead if you want a quick transaction. This isn't fast food. They spend time with each customer, teaching them the traditional way to eat Sushi, you know, without insulting the chef :)

First time here and it was awesome. Tea was excellent. Chicken bulgogi was tender and not dry. My BF doesn't like miso soup, but he liked theirs. Shrimp tempura was excellent. Bathrooms were clean. Service was good. Owner is very friendly and makes you feel very welcome. Nice establishment. I highly recommend. They don't use paper plates. Also, dumplings are excellent!

I have just moved to the area and this was the first time me and my roomie had been here. I'll start by saying the menus was really confusing and a bit pricey. The sushi was "okay" but I won't say it was fantastic. I enjoyed my dragon roll. The mochi ice cream was COVERED in whipped cream and I couldn't really taste anything else but the whip cream. My tea was in a small mug and I got more ice than tea but it was still good. I will say the dumplings were really good and we actually ended up ordering a second plate of them. With just the food I would say this place is 3 stars. But the owner is what really knocks this review down for me. She is really loud, pushy, and over the top. I'm sure some people find it endearing but I don't. I didn't really let it bother me until she went to show us how to eat sushi "correctly." She touched my face and put the food in my mouth. I DID NOT APPRECIATE IT AT ALL. The sushi chef did come over and thanked us for coming. He was very sweet. I would only recommend this place for their tea and dumpling. I did not find the character and behavior of the owner to my liking at all.
(2)J S.
Mmm mm good! I've ordered the shrimp tempura dishes O and P on the menu. We also ordered the plum and ginger tea and I love it. Bento mom and chefs customer service was welcoming and entertaining. I like when owners interact with their customers and that's exactly what they do. Other than the waiting there's nothing bad about this place. But I understand that you cannot rush your craft/ art.
(4)Jihane L.
Sushi was great! I'll be back soon. I love the homemade soy sauce. The owner was very attentive and taught us how to properly use chop sticks and eat sushi the Japanese way. Loved the teas too!!
(4)Tifany W.
First time here and I will be back! The sushi was amazing and the tea made me feel great! I had the spicy tuna and avocado sushi, shrimp tempura, miso soup and seaweed salad. It was refreshing to see a family owned place that is run by Christians! The food was so good, I had to give Mama Bento a hug before we left! I will be back soon!

I am sitting in this restaurant as I am writing this review. Also, I would give this no stars if I could. It is a Tuesday night, so it's not busy...so one would not understand why our food has not come out after almost 45 minutes of waiting. The lady at the counter is very boisterous and in your face. Also, they charge for everything...can't even get a glass of water; only out of the bottle...for $2. The sushi chef came and thanked the customers that have come, eaten, and left before we have even gotten our food...which is all sushi. After waiting almost an hour with no one else in the restaurant, I told them that I wanted my money back and to leave, I was told that my rolls were almost ready, and after an argument I told her I just wanted them to go. She snatched my chopsticks out of my hand, plugged again that the soy sauce was home made, and gave me my food. At least the sushi chef said sorry. Overall, this was one of the worst experiences at restaurants EVER. I have been to 5 star sushi restaurants that were packed and had amazing sushi at the same price. She says she gets her business by word of mouth, so I hope some of you reading this decide to go elsewhere. So, I'd say save your money...you'd get better service at McDonalds.

Clearly, something must be in the tea that's giving some yelpers satisfaction of this place. I honestly don't see it. By the way, this is an update review from my last review almost two years ago. Once again, I'm going to give this place one rating - only because zero rating is not an option. My friends have been reading my review and never could understand why I was so critical, being that I'm more of a mellow person who always looks towards the best of things. So, I decided to bring a friend to witness the circus that takes place in Bento Cafe. After writing my first review, the owners decided to switch up the menu a bit and invited me back for a free meal. I never wanted to go back, however, this time I chose to return to see what my friend thought of it. Bento Mama is the same act as she has been. Like everyone has described, she's overly extreme. Perhaps some who know her personally may appreciate that, but if your'e going to want to attract new customers you to find a balance of behavior or code of conduct. She's just boisterous and the attitude speaks louder than the actual quality and taste of the food. You're just left with an unpleasant taste of an overall bad experience. Again, the soy sauce is good/above average, but I do not think it's incredibly delicious for people to be driving miles or flying into the area just to "drink" it. I know I would definitely not walk down the street just to buy a bottle of this. The soy sauce is not salty. It has the right levels of salt and umami sensation. However, the aroma of good soy sauce was absent. I am a bit of a soy sauce critic and I have to say, her soy sauce did not have a quality smell to it, nor did the taste of good quality soy hit you when you initially taste it. It doesn't compliment the fish, but rather adds a light salty sweet taste to it. You really need an aromatic soy sauce that will compliment the taste of fresh fish. Anyway, enough about the soy sauce, which is the best thing in the restaurant. I want to talk about the menu. Yes it has changed a bit since the last time I've been there, but the items are over priced for the kind of experience you'll get. There's no spectacular ambiance. There's no constant wait staff. The decor is unpleasant. The service is not 3,4, or 5 star quality. The presentation is not good. And most importantly, the taste of the sushi is just scratching the surface of being average. Therefore, in consideration of these factors, this place should not be expensive. I've read other reviews where they indicate that it is on the pricier side because they use the freshest ingredients. First off, sushi restaurants should always seek to use the freshest ingredients. That's not an excuse. Second - there was absolutely no quality in the service. You got a yapping lady who takes your order. You're not constantly being offered water. No one seats you, you go up and order yourself. It's a cafe for goodness sake. Please take your darn prices down. Again, your sushi isn't that good. I'd say it sucks for that price. The dumplings you get with each meal were not good. They honestly taste like they came out of a bag from Costco or something. They just weren't that good. The Miso was once again bland.
(1)Eric W.
This place is an experience, but not really a good one. Like most of the other reviewers have stated, the woman running the register is very intense. She tells you how amazing the food is, how the tea is good for healing, the soy sauce is home made, and that they're number 1 on Google and Yelp. I almost believed her, until i started looking around. The decor is somewhere between a typical sushi restaurant and a sandwich shop. The first problem comes while ordering, they have pictures of combos, but no prices or descriptions. Then when you look up above your head, they have prices and descriptions, but no pictures. It could be confusing to someone new to japanese food. The next problem is the price, i paid $29 for a bento box (which didn't come in a box) of about 12 rolls, 4 tempura shrimp and a tea. The quality of the food is average at best, better than grocery store sushi, but nowhere near some other spots in the area. The cuts of fish are too big for the rice, and the home made soy sauce (served in a Kikkoman bottle) tastes like its regular store bought. With all the food problems, on top of the service and price, i just cant recommend this place.
(2)Alaina J.
Very good sushi. Bento Mom was super friendly and helpful. My experience was similar to other yelpers, I got an "in your face" (literally) demonstration of how to properly use chopsticks with a bit of Christian testimony. I was good with it, but can see how others could be pit off. I will go back, but may be inclined to order takeout so I can use my chopsticks the "wrong way" if I choose to.
(4)William M.
Really good sushi! I been a customer for more than 7 years and the taste is unique. They make their own soy sauce and really good natural tea. I'm in Europe and every time I'm in the area I stop by for some great sushi.
(5)Adria G.
My first visit yesterday--I took my granddaughter after we came out of the movies. Bento is very clean and inviting--we were warmly welcomed!- and since it was our first visit, the various selections were explained to us, which I felt was very nice. There was a very good selection. ...Since we are 'seasoned' sushi eaters it was easy to choose--We had #5, #15, & C since eel is our favorite. They make their own soy sauce and herbal teas. We had an herbal tea that was delicious and the sushi was very good.--very fresh. Bento Mom and Bento Dad, as they are affectionately referred to, made our time there very enjoyable as we savored our sushi. I would say pricing is moderate, and both my granddaughter and myself are anxious to take the rest of the family on a return trip!! Bento is easy to find and there is plenty of parking--located in a center off Prince William Parkway, a main street. I would recommend Bento--most definitely!!

Be careful what she rings up and the prices on the board don't match . they over charge here !!!! And they take forever !!!!!!!

The best sushi restaurant in Woodbridge, VA! Sushi always made fresh with the finest of fresh fish. Don't know the art of eating Sushi? Just ask Bento Mom to teach you Sushi 101! Soon you will be coming back for more and become part of the Bento Sushi and Roll family!
(5)Brittini B.
So let me just say I'm in LOVE. The food is amazing and you have to try the tea! My favorite it the Honey Citron Tea. The owners are so friendly and welcoming. I have found my sushi home!!!
(5)Jen L.
The tea was out of this world!!! And the sushi amazing but Mamma Bento is worth coming to see !!!
(5)Tess G.
Best sushi and dumplings I've had in a while. Bento mama is the type of woman who gets to know her customers, and honestly that's one of the main reasons why I come back. She always has something new and exciting to talk about.
(4)Sydney C.
I absolutely love this place!! I don't understand why there are negative reviews. The owners do a fantastic job running the place, especially since they are the ONLY ones running it. Sushi is on point!! The best I've had and all ingredients are fresh and of good quality. They are actually less expensive than most places I've been too. I've been going to this place for a couple years now and will continue to go
(5)Traci R.
It's been two years since I've been to Bento because I moved so it was interesting to see all the changes they made in response to the Yelp reviews! I was a little bit disappointed that the owner was no longer as bubbly and chatty as she used to be. I thought it added to the character of the place. Seeing her excited about her work made me excited to eat it. And i honestly believe it's as good as she says. But, I get that not everybody likes to have a long convo before ordering. They really did edit the decor in there. My mom made note of it the minute she walked in so that's nice. I also saw they have Keurig, which I always support! Other than that, the sushi is still awesome! I ALWAYS get the Fiesta Roll which is my absolute favorite. My mom tried the chicken katsu which was also really good! So I'd suggest you go and try the new, revamped version of Bento Cafe if you weren't a fan in the past!
(4)Jo R.
Pricey on the bento boxes which really doesnt come in a box. The Mamasan talks to you but tells you what youre doing wrong with how you chew your food, how you drink your tea, how your posture while you eat, not something you want to hear while you eat, was glad the 2nd time we went there, there were more than enough people that she could talk to she left us alone..whew...there are other japanese restaurant around so Id skip this one.

Pretty much what people have said before, is what i experienced. I've never felt so ripped off eating sushi, and unfortunately i purchased my meal before reading the reviews. I ate there twice and both times the experience was AWFUL I walked in, and was immediately approached by the owners. 1) my soy sauce is so good, it's home made, and people drive miles just to come here and drink it. 2) you can lose weight eating my sushi 3) look at all my customers, they love me, they send me gifts from all around the world. this one is from Alaska, this one is from blah, blah blah. don't get me wrong you are a nice lady, but it gets pretty annoying. Food was less than mediocre and the staff was just awful.
(1)Bobby W.
Just had the best miso soup and fried dumplings I've ever had. The service here is beyond fantastic!
(5)Melissa K.
Bento Mom is hilarious and the food is the highest quality sushi I've ever had. She always makes me feel like I'm at home and that's the best feeling when walking into a new restaurant. The tea is to die for as well as the dumplings. I love this place and I'll keep coming back! Try this place out!
(5)Richard B.
Sushi was mediocre at best. The price was terribly high for the poor quality of sushi. I hate leaving bad reviews, but I will avoid this place in the future.
(2)Duke D.
I ordered ramon and paid $$ for what was clearly Top Ramon. I will never go back and waste my hard earned money on nonchatai so called Japanese food. I have lived in Japan for 12 years. My wife was born and raised there. This is not Japanese food just because someone says so. Don't waste your money or your time on this place.
(1)Alfredo T.
As soon as I entered I was welcomed and shown the menu. The owners were very friendly. I ordered the number 9 which was the salmon, avocado and California rolls with a jasmine tea. Delicious. I'll be back.
(4)C L.
The lady is crazy! She kept telling me that in our culture we serve moms first even before kids. Well, my mom can't be served if she doesn't have her food because it took eternity to get our food. Then she kissed my son on his face three time!!!! That's disgusting. AND the food was overpriced and not good. My husband was pissed!
(1)Jeffrey K.
I have been coming here since they opened and love the quality of the sushi for woodbridge. Sushi Mama always remembers my name and and asks about my son. I've never had a bad meal here and love the sashimi platter.
(5)Jenny S.
I have to live 1 star here since zero star is not allowed. Totally overpriced. Long waiting time. Taste bad
(1)China D.
My favorite place to go for sushi! Salmon is out of this world! The owners are also very friendly and outgoing. The hot tea is incredible! I go here at least once every two weeks!
(5)Ross O.
I've been going to Bento since it opened in 2006. I have only gotten a Yelp recently. This place keeps me coming back year after year, even after having moved to Florida. Bento Mom and Dad are the kindest restraunt owners I have come to know. They try to make everyone feel like family. I know they have made me feel like it. I have traveled a lot over the years and try sushi restraunts in practically every city, and Bento is among the best I have encountered. I will keep coming back to Bento for as long as the doors are open!
(5)Tim T.
pretty much what people have said before, is what i experienced. I've never felt so ripped off eating sushi, and unfortunately i purchased my meal before reading the reviews. I walked in, and was immediately approached by the owners. Some key works she's said over, and over, and over , and over again. 1) my soy sauce is so good, it's home made, and people drive miles just to come here and drink it. first off, she barely gave me any in a tiny cup. also, it tasted no better than any other soy sauce. 2) you can lose weight eating my sushi well, thats because your portions weretiny for what one pays for. also, i get it... you are trying to be the next subway espousing the wonders of your food. realize, it can be very insulting to others, especially women. 3) look at all my customers, they love me, they send me gifts from all around the world. this one is from alaska, this one is from blah, blah blah. don't get me wrong you are a nice lady, but it gets pretty annoying 4) i can't explain why it's so good, you just gotta try it to know. i really don't know how this lady stays in business. the food was below average, the portions were tiny. it was served on paper plates, and her reasoning is that its more environmentally friendly, which doesn't make sense. paper/styrofoam is more wasteful. this place is for suckers, and once one eats here, they never come back. pretty sure of that.
(1)Rebecca R.
Best sushi in Woodbridge! Made to order and VERY friendly staff! Been a loyal customer for 3 yrs and won't go anywhere else! Staff is very accommodating and will make whatever you want!
(5)Rae O.
I just want to start this review with saying I have been going to Bentos for about 6 years and love this place. Yes, the sushi rolls are on the smaller side, but it is always good and I feel like made with more care than other sushi places in Woodbridge. It has always been spot on. They owners are sweet and enthusiastic about sushi and I think the owner/wife is great. It makes me sad that they felt like they needed to take down the pretty cool fan art off the walls (why cant they have pride in what they do yelp??) and that they felt the need to tone down the sushi enthusiasm. It is rare in woodbridge that you come across a restaurant that has some personality but I guess it just wasn't ok with some. If you crave a eating experience that is boring and a server that barely acknowledges you well this is not the place for you.
(4)Rose M.
As much as I wanted to like the place, the owner, "Bento Mom" is just too overbearing for me. She means well and I appreciated her humor, but after she proceeded to tell me that she could help me "lose weight" and somewhat embarrassed me since there were a few people in the place, I was ready to take my order to go. She showed me pictures of her "fans" and proceeded to rant the whole time we were waiting for our food. I lived in Japan for 6 years and this doesn't even compare. The sushi is way overpriced and the quality wasn't that great. For the price she charges, you think the food would be served on actual dinnerware instead of a dixie plate! As soon as I sat down I got a lecture on chewing my food 100 times before swallowing to "train my brain to think it's full." She tried to show me how to properly use chopsticks, when I corrected her and told her that I know what i'm doing. I will not be going back here. The food was meh, way overpriced and the owner is over the top. I do recommend going to Sakura if you're in the area and looking for good, moderately priced sushi.
(1)Adam H.
I have been going to Bento for years now. I have eaten there many times. I am a huge fan of sushi and have had a lot of sushi from many different places and I consider the sushi at Bento to be some of the best I've ever had. It upsets me to see all the negative reviews on here, and I feel the need to defend them. One thing you have to understand is that the place is not meant to be a high end fancy restaurant. It is meant to be casual and the paper plates have never upset me. As far as the price goes, good sushi is expensive. If you want cheap sushi, go to Wegman's and Harris Teeter and that is what you will get. Cheap sushi. To think that a small business such as this should be able to compete in price with Wegman's is ridiculous. The price that a business is able to pay for their ingredients is heavily based on the quantity that they purchase and a small business like Bento does not have nearly the turn around as a giant corporation like Wegman's. Whether you like it or not, sushi can not be good and cheap at the same time. The thing that upsets me the most about all of this is the situation with Bento Mom. Like I said, I have eaten here many times over many years, so she has gotten to know me and my family. She is an incredibly nice person. She treats her returning customers like they are old friends and she is always sincerely happy to see them. At one point while I was going there more regularly, I started calling in my orders over the phone. All I had to say was, "Hey, it's Adam" and she would say, "How are you? So that will be two number 12, one salmon, one tuna, etc." She remembered the specifics of my usual order. You only get this kind of service from someone who really cares about their customers. As far as her lessons go, one thing you have to understand about the Japanese culture is that it is very traditional. There is a specific order to eat sushi. There is even a specific direction that you stir the wasabi into the soy sauce. While I don't necessarily obey this, I have found her lessons to be interesting and educational. Now I have seen the reviews on here and I have seen that she and her husband have taken the time to personally respond to some really nasty ones. They have made an effort to change a lot in order to try to win back these customers. I just went in there today for the first time in a while to see how they were doing. The prices have dropped some. That's nice, but what was really upsetting was Bento Mom. She has definitely changed her approach. She is quiet, and does not say much at all anymore. I would normally be greeted with a big hug, but not this time. She seems to have had her spirit broken. She is not the lively, happy person she used to be. She does not seem nearly as proud. She does not seem like her heart is even in it like it used to. These reviews have broken her. It's really easy for a bunch of people sitting at a computer to say whatever they want about whoever they want, but sometimes they don't realize the impact that it has on someone. Maybe she could have come off as a little overbearing, but unless you're extremely introverted, it's really not that bad. What you got from Bento was a truly unique dining experience. She was proud of what she did. She was extremely friendly and only meant well. This is a small business that struggles to get by, but they do what they do because they love it. Their prices aren't making them rich. They're making them able to get by. I would like to see Bento Mom go back to the way she was before and I am still crushed to see that she is clearly hurt. These are good, honest people that make good sushi. If you want cheap sushi, if you want customer service that doesn't care about you, if you want your money to go to the giant corporations that crush little mom and pop shops like this, then gp get your sushi at Wegman's, but if you want some good sushi made by wonderful people that you can feel good about supporting, then please give this place a try.

This place is a very odd restaurant that I'm not entirely sure how to review it. I'm debating with myself whether I'd go back. Apparently they have some very loyal customers. "Mama Bento" seems intent on aggressively evangelizing a very specific "correct" program of sushi eating, which includes minimal wasabi, gyoza, home made soy sauce, environmentally friendly serving ware, and medicinal teas. While I'm not necessarily in disagreement, the place is a radical departure from the usual Japanese restaurant, where I can quietly consume my meal over a cold Kirin or saki. I left unsure if I'd walked into a sushi restaurant or an unorthodox weight loss program. It's something I'll have to mull over. I'm not necessarily against wait staff disagreeing with customers, either. If I ordered a hanger steak or venison medallion well done, for example, I'd hope the waiter would stop me from committing such a crime. None the less, "Mama Bento" can seem overbearing. The cuts of fish on the nigiri are generous, but the rolls are unexceptional and there is limited variety. Compared to some of the Japanese restaurants I've been in, where the wait staff is truely educational and turned me on to exotic delicacies such a fried fish bones, "Mama Bento" seems eccentric and over the top. Her restaurant is an experience I'm glad I had, but I'm not sure I'd care to repeat it.
(2)Renee O.
Momma's choice of restaurants to celebrate her birthday and she picks sushi. Luckily everyone in the family LOVES sushi. This place did not disappoint. The sushi taste fantastic...dragon roll and rainbow roll being some of our favorites here. The sashimi was fresh and tender. Our family of 5 (3 teens included) stuffed ourselves til we were full for $65 bones. Fantastic value for a fantastic meal. Thank you, Bento Cafe Sushi and Roll. We'll be back.
(4)Dennis C.
If I could give this place zero stars I would. The owner is CUCKOO! I realized this after the 4th or 5th time she explained how good her food was and how people from all over the world send her gifts. I thought it couldn't get any worse but I was wrong....when she brought us our food (which was okay but over-priced) she grabbed my chopsticks to "show me" how to use them. I quickly explained I didn't need help so she moved on to my wife. I would've thought that maybe it was just us until I saw her do it to another group. Even worse, she actually fed one of them a piece of sushi! I could not believe what I was seeing...no sense of boundaries or personal space. I will not return.
(1)Crystal J.
The sushi here is good, but not GREAT, like Wegmans a few miles away. The Udon noodles were excellent. Piping hot with fresh ingredients. Nice spot, nice/funny service
(3)Marc D.
Really enjoyed dinner here. All of the sushi was carefully prepared and if excellent quality. The owners were very attentive and everything was absolutely spotless. Don't go for the atmosphere -- go for the foods and excellent service. ..
(4)Mariel G.
Avoid this place at all cost! You can get better sushi for much less elsewhere without the hassle of "Bento Mama" and her homemade soy sauce and food served on "environmentally friendly" paper plates. I've had my fair share of sushi and sushi restaurants and this by far is the worst I've ever experienced.
(1)Alisha G.
Nice small place...& yes, the other reviews are correct: the owner will drive you nuts. Not much of a selection but what they have is good. And everything is serve on paper plates....
(3)Fortiz H.
This place is Ok for Sushi, but is very expensive.
(3)Ron H.
Overpriced and annoying. The sushi here is nothing spectacular and yet the prices make you think you are at an authentic Japanese bento shop. Not even close. Problem number one is the owner. She means well, but puts herself off as this grand teacher of Japanese cuisine with the sanctified mission to enlighten the souls of the round-eye. She will "show you how to eat sushi properly", she will educate you on "why ginger is important to clean your palate", instruct you as to how to pick up your food with the chopstick", etc. etc. I looked over her lunch items and noticed along with the typical Japanese teriaki and noodle soups, she also had bulgolgi. I then noticed the newspaper she was reading was clearly written in Hangul. I said, "Isn't that Korean?" Whoops! I guess she didn't like that question, but I finally got to eat my overpriced meal in peace.
(2)Fareed S.
The owner is very nice. She speaks to you as if she knows you personally and that feels great in a small business setting. It was very clean and relaxing. The portion size is great for one person. As a fitness specialist over portion is a turn off and not to mention says a lot about your ingredients. Good food is never over portioned. I admired that she mentioned health and nutrition without me telling her my profession. I was introduced to her soy sauce and soup based on the health benefits. Now for the sushi. Good taste and the sauce was not salty as I have noticed in other restaurants. The rolls had the right portion of each ingredient. Next to my baber so I'll come again.
(4)Samantha H.
A great place to eat. Mama Bento is fantastic and always makes me feel welcomed no matter the length of time between visits!
(5)Bryanne S.
I try to hold back on bad reviews unless the food/restaurant is so bad, I think people should know. Unfortunately, that is the case with Bento Cafe. First off, from the moment I walked in, the woman/owner would not stop talking. She asked if it was my first time there, (it was) and proceeded to show me her "Fans" which amounts to a tacky wall of random paraphernalia sent from her devotees. She said at least ten times that her food was so good, people send her gifts from all over the world. She told me about how she helped people lose weight with her fantastic miso soup. She told me that her Japanese customers love her soy sauce so much, they drink it, and that's what authentic Japanese people do. She told me all the same crap that other reviewers have mentioned, and then mentioned she could "show me how to lose weight." I told her I wasn't interested, and she kept right on talking about this and that. I felt incredibly uncomfortable. She stood there and explained everything on the menu as if I couldn't read, and reminded me that her food is "very healthy" because everything is "homemade" and that she is a "naturalist." It was so overbearing I finally ordered the BBQ Chicken Bento Box and the hot arrowroot tea so I could go sit down and stop listening to her. They were out of arrowroot tea, she told me, and also several others. She told me twice to order a "fruity tea" and I told her I don't like fruity flavors. I ordered a hot ginger tea instead. At this point, and since I'd walked in, I was the only customer in the restaurant. My order was RIDICULOUSLY expensive. The bento box was $12.95 and the tea was $4.99! My order with tax was $18.85. I couldn't believe it. I expected that my portions would be reasonable and the food high quality based not only on the high price, but her incessant boasting. After about 10 minutes, (and hearing the beep/open/close of a microwave) I was brought my miso soup and 2 dumplings. The soup was mediocre at best, and the first I've ever been served without tiny tofu cubes. I did not taste anything different from other cheap Japanese/Korean restaurants that serve miso. The dumplings were nice. They were tiny, but delicate and crisp and the sauce that accompanied them was flavorful. Then, about five minutes later, my "bento box" arrived. I put the quotes because I think it is a joke to call what they served me a "bento box." This was more akin to a cheap Hawaiian "plate lunch" with a shredded cabbage slaw drowning in heavy, sweet mayo-based sauce, a giant mound of bland white rice and finally, the ultimate disappointment, a pathetic gray pile of cubed chicken, that had no vegetables (as pictured on the wall menu) and was crumbling at the edges, (normal when cooking frozen chicken). All of this was served on a tiny Daisy paper plate. Nice. What happened to a bento box? Isn't that the NAME of the restaurant? The food looked completely unappetizing. The meat was chewy, rubbery, bland and old tasting. It had no sauce except whatever it was cooked in, and had dried, and honestly, it looked like my cat's Fancy Feast. I took a small bite of the slaw, and got a mouthful of mayo sauce, which was so gross. I took a few bites of rice to cleanse my palate, and then gave up. I couldn't do it. Another five minutes had passed, and since no one had bothered to bring me the expensive hot tea I ordered, I left my full plate on the table and went to the register to request a refund for the drink. She asked me how I liked the food, and I told her, "It's not what I expected. The picture shows the meat cooked brown and with vegetables." She actually replied that they don't use onions because customers don't really like them, and I told her that she shouldn't use that image to advertise the meal then. I wanted to tell her that her food was disgusting, and that I felt like I'd just been swindled out of almost $20 for food I wouldn't feed a dog. I've had Lean Cuisines that tasted better than that. The prices across the board were ridiculous - they are in line with high-quality sushi restaurants that have fresh fish flown in daily from Japan. I've eat Japanese for many years, and am quite accustomed to high-quality Japanese food. In fact, down the road at Tokyo Japanese there is far better food and I don't think THEY are top notch either. My point being: this restaurant needs to rethink it's menu. Those plates are $4.99 plates, MAXIMUM. The woman gave me a refund for my tea by handing me a $5 when I paid with credit. She cheated me out of the tax she charged me for the meal, and she cheated me out of lunch because I had to go home and make a sandwich. I will never go there again, and didn't see anyone else rushing through the door. She needs to back off the customers, rethink the menu and they need to revamp the food. It was stale, cheap, and gross. I am definitely disgusted.

B. G's review couldn't be more spot on. This was the worst Sushi experience ever! I couldn't believe how overpriced the rolls are and they were not even that great. Bento mom was VERY talkative... We were the only ones there at the time so I can see how she might be a little bored, but it was to the point of annoying. We will never go back to this place. I'd rather drive all the way to Springfield for Osaka. If you want some decent sushi, go over to Sakura. It's better then here and the service is great.

I hadn't been to this place for at least five years, because the woman behind the counter (I don't know if she's the owner) drives me nuts. But I was in the area, in a hurry, and the place where I usually pick up sushi for my husband was under rennovation. When I walked in she said "you changed your hair!". I guess she tries to connect with anyone who walks in by saying something personal, but that actually turned me off. So I tried not to show my annoyance with her and looked at the menu. She would not stop talking! I just wanted some ala carte vegetable rolls and possibly some California rolls (simple stuff!). When I asked if she had ala carte, she convinced me to get some combination order because it came with soup and their version of pot stickers. I gave in and ordered it. I can't believe it was over $13 for the tiny sushi I got, the smallest amount (I'm not kidding) of miso soup I've ever seen, and two tiny pot stickers. The pot stickers were so small, I could have easily eaten both at once, and I don't normally cram too much in my mouth at once! Maybe she makes the wonton skins, because I have never seen any so small in any Asian or other grocery store in my life (and I've lived in Korea and shopped in Japan). She also lectured me on what she says is their home made soy sauce. She advised me to drink some of it when I got home, before adding any wasabi. Then she showed me a t-shirt from some woman from Alaska who she says comes to her store to eat salmon, because it's better than what she can get in Alaska. Coincidentally, I have also lived in Alaska, which she noticed when I gave her my Alaska Airlines credit card, thus the story. I believe Alaskan salmon is the most commonly used in U.S. restaurants, but she says she doesn't get hers from there! Her final story was about a woman, she had a before and after picture of her, who she said lost 200 pounds from eating her miso soup. I couldn't take the stories any more, so I took a walk to the dollar store and back, hoping my order would be ready when I returned. When I got home, my husband recognized the different container from usual, so I reminded him of the place near Milwaukee Frozen Custard, and my 11-year old daughter immediately shreiked "that weird woman who wants you to drink her tea?!". Obviously, my whole family will not be frequenting Bento Cafe ever again. Did I forget to mention that after being there for less than five minutes total, I could smell the oil on my jacket when I got to the car?! NEVER AGAIN!! The woman is too crazy for me. I'm normally very patient with restaurant employees and actually like talking to them about their business, but not this woman!

This place does not even deserve a sinle star. If there is 0 for the rating I would give this a 0 out of five. Over priced and small portion. Very low quality of food. The lady who seems like an owner of that place must be out of her mind really. I am sure she doesn't even check these reviews. I was about to call her and compline when we came home and checked the food we carried out. Just shocked.... She chopped the donkatsu in micro pieces. The food was just a joke, they must have no pride of what they are doing. Let me stop here, they don't deserve this moment of my time. ? ? ? ... ! ? . .

Every time I am in the area I go and get some sushi from Bentos. I Enjoy the eccentric owner and her alter to the customers who love her... She is almost as much an icon of the place as her sushi. My favorite is the tempura rolls - both the #1 and the "P" on the menu are excellent... and the Plum tea is amazing. Yes, it is expensive, but it is more than the food I go in for.. it is also the conversation and humor that the owner brings to the place. I do think you have to have a certain openness to enjoy her presence - which I do whole-heartedly.
(4)Kristen J.
I would probably eat here more often if the lady would let me read for myself, instead of lecture me. And the price is expensive for Woodbridge.

Nice little "mom and pop" type sushi joint. The owner was real nice and accommodating, showing us photos on the wall of her patrons. The establishment was clean and neat. The sushi was good. Not the best I've ever had, but decent. I wouldn't drive great lengths to eat there, but if you're in the area and have a hankering for sushi, I would definitely recommend it. The thing that I like most about the establishment is how much the owner cared. No matter how much you may think she's annoying you have to admit, she is passionate about her food.
(3)Erin M.
I've been going to bento for close to six years now and I love it. The food is great, Bento Mama (the owner) is always friendly and caring, and it's a great atmosphere.

If I can I'd give it no stars. $9 for ramen is ok, but for instant-ramen that u can get for $.25 at any Asian mart? Really? The insane proprietress had the nerve to tell us that this is how it is in her country. I'm sure in Crazyland, that's how it is served, but in japan if u were to serve crap like that, you are just begging to go bankrupt. For the love of mankind do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.

The lady seemed very nice but too imposing. The sushi was overpriced and was TINY!!!! NOT GOING BACK!!!
(1)Jeremy R.
This is the fast food of sushi in a bad way. The prices are a little high for the quality of fish. The miso soup is ehh, nothing to write home about. It is served in a help your self pot and seemed more watery than it should be. The lady that runs the place is very annoying. She gets to the point that she tells you are wrong in how your plate, napkin, and soup should be set up at your table and then tries to move every thing to be more feng shui because it helps with the digestion presses or something. As for the food I was just not impressed. The tuna was bland and their combinations were more salmon based than anything.

I had the vegetarian combination roll platter with two dumplings and hot plum tea. The platter was very good and the plum tea was even better. I have never had plum tea so this was a real treat for me. The owner there was very kind and shared with me a lot of health information which I find to be helpful.. being that I'm a vegan and have lost way over 100lbs and is very health conscious this was a conversation that I was really into. They have a lot of healthy teas to try and is very vegan friendly. I had know idea how to eat with chop sticks and the owner pulled up a chair and showed me and now I feel that I'm a expert now :-) There are so many restaurants out there that could careless about you or your health Bento Cafe is a breath of fresh air. They have something for anyone to eat. I spent about 14.00 which was was a good price for good food and the best tea I have ever had. The overall appearance of Bento Cafe is very clean.
(4)Jerry W.
They are definitely overpriced for what they serve. I had a combo with a california roll and crab roll, and water to drink and it was $16. If it was great quality sushi, I'd understand this price, especially with the size of the rolls. I was disappointed in the serving sizes, but they were actually pretty tasty. The miso soup was kind of watered down, and the dumplings were only so-so. The lady that own the place was very friendly, but a little pushy
(2)Cardigans B.
Overpriced and annoying. OMG, it was over $20 ordering just one cucumber sushi roll and chiken/rice bento in paper dishes! The quality and service are just food court level, but the price is fancy Japanese restaurant. The owner was just annoying as well! We never go back. The name Bento Cafe is tempting...hate my GPS
(1)Lyss B.
I have never experienced such cheap, expensive "sushi." Every roll was wrapped in a gooey mayo mix that waters down the IMITATION crabmeat. For a $50 lunch, we left very hungry and had to laugh that everything was served on the cheapest styrofoam and plastic ware Costco can buy. I felt competely taken advantage of since the size of the pieces on their pictures, which she claimed they made themselves, was not even close to what was served. Terrible, expensive lunch and they will never receive our business again.
(1)Mark T.
VERY overpriced for the quality of food served. I mean come on ..... $43 for lunch for two? The owner "Bento Mom" is a character and liked by the locals but her food is poor quality. My friend ordered a beef tonkatsu platter that consisted of watery miso soup with a couple of TINY pieces of tofu in it, 2 overcooked (probably frozen) dumplings, shredded cabbage with thousand island dressing, cold rice, a fried beef cutlet cut into tiny squares that made it look like dog food (really) that was cold. I had a california roll type platter "#15" with more of the watered down miso(she called it "low sodium" miso soup), 2 dumplings, and 2 small rolls that were grocery store quality. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else in Woodbridge for sushi. I will be.
(1)Emily M.
This was one of the absolute worst places I've EVER been too ! "Momma" was CRAZY ! The owner " momma " talked to us the whole time. She even made me order something I did NOT want. And when she brought out the order she physically FED ME my sushi.!!! And she talked so fast and so much i couldn't even say stop . she also put wasabi in my soy sauce and didnt ask me. i HATE spicy food she also brought our food onPAPER PLATES ! And she said " we are trying to save the earth " but hello wash a plate saves the earth not using paper plates ! .She charges way to much and the quality of the food .... Lets just say I could go to walmart and get the same quality of food.
(1)JoJo D.
The lady there is very funny but don't go there if you're easily offended or take things personally. The sushi rolls taste good, but they're kind of on the small side. Bigger than buffet sushi but smaller than supermarket sushi. Not really worth it for the price, as I ended up ordering two dishes and spending about $26 for lunch. Good tea selection too, but I think she's more interested in pushing health products than making quality sushi. They also claim to brew their own soy sauce which is interesting, but it's got less sodium and for that, I'll just use the low sodium kind. I'd go back if I was in the area and wanted a quick bite of sushi, but only if I really didn't feel like driving an extra few miles to a better place. I just moved here so any suggestions are welcome!
(2)Q. J.
I am an asian and love sushi to death! But this place is definitely overpriced! The quality is so-so and the lady sounds like always in competitive mood to convince customers that this is the best sushi place. To me, this is NOT at all!
(1)Claudette R.
Overpriced. Smells of deep-frying. We tried this place on a whim and were tempted to walk out immediately. We should have, and we aren't coming back. The sushi is tiny, the prices are large. Everything is served in Styrofoam.
(1)Tomomi C.
BAD! I'm Japanese and that food is not Japanese food we eat in Japan! Please, don't go there! They are not even Japanese so I don't think they know how to cook our food. When we order Japanese Noodle I was shocked I got instant noodle instead. It's made me very sad if people think that's Japanese food, because it's not! Please, turn around in front of the door and go somewhere else. It's really bad...
(1)Sushi L.
The owner/lady is extremely nice. Very good quality, but very little sushi for such an expensive price. I think this place would be a lot more successful if it was some place other than woodbridge. Demographically, it would fair a lot better is some place like Tyson's or Ballston.
(2)D H.
ZERO stars if Yelp would allow it! I eat sushi a lot and have to say that this was the MOST EXPENSIVE sushi I have ever had. So pricey that it was almost on par with a roll that I had at Nobu in Malibu, price wise that is. It was mediocre in taste at best! Very small rolls, not fresh, bland, and the edamame was brown. The annoying lady at the front brags about her world renowned sushi as she serves it on paper dixie plates and a cafeteria style tray. I can't wait for this place to go out of business! Stay far far far away from this place. It's a joke!
(1)Alexander L.
The sushi was really overpriced but I found the shrimp tempura enjoyable. Bento mom was very entertaining but we were relieved when someone else came in for her to direct her attentions to. I gave a small tip ahead of time thinking that we ordered and they brought it to us, but was unpleasantly surprised it works by name calling and I tipped for zero serving service whatsoever. Heck, for the price of the sushi I kind of felt robbed having given the tip.
(3)Guillaume L.
Wow this place is so overpriced & serve tiny in portion!!! After reading some of the reviews, we figured we'll still give this place a try 'coz we were craving for sushi.. Not many places for sushi in Woodbridge & we figured it can't be worst then Hibachi Buffet's sushi, we were wrong!! When we first walked in, we were greeted by this talkative annoying old lady who introduced herself as "Bento Mom," next we saw lots of choices/pictures for sushi, noodle & bento box. We got excited & ordered sushi, bento box (Teriyaki chicken), Udon and Soju for myself. When we got our food, 1st our miso soup was cold, teriyaki ck tasted old, sushi so-so & worst of all the presentation, all of our food were not only nowhere near the pictures nicely displayed on the counters but all our food were placed and brought over on these cheap paper plates that you use at kids birthday parties and discard after each usage, we looked at each other stunned. Well $80 later, we were extremely dissatisfied & felt cheated, no literally 'coz she over charged us on one item and "Bento Ma" ordered an extra item for my wife when she merely asked how much it was. The only positive thing we got out of this is our daughter enjoyed the dumplings so we ordered an extra one for her. Also, why is she "Bento Ma" pretending to be Japanese, she's obviously Korean??? She should be proud of her own ethnicity/Heritage and not pretend to be something she is not! Bottom line, if you crave for good sushi, go to Fairfax, if not Wegman in Woodbridge (Stoneridge) is a much better alternative.

This place is way over priced for the food. I dont mind paying for a $15 dollar meal; as long as the food is delicious. This was not the case. The chicken Katsu tasted like it was refried and old. My plate my meal came on was the lid of some to go container. I can honestly say that this probably was one of my worst culinary experiences. Eat at your own peril.
(1)Veronica G.
Most of the sushi is crap, but a select few choices are quite good. I am not sure who gets off charging no less than 15 bucks for 6 rolls though! This was definitely a one time experience or my wallet would run away.
(1)Sarah C.
They make their own soy sauce, which is delicious. It's kind of unassuming (it's in a strip mall, and the decor is not that great), but it's possibly the best sushi I've had in the area. Definitely try the "Q" -- spicy salmon. Each roll is twice the nice of a normal roll. Yum!
(4)Lilibeth M.
I checked this place out when it first opened, and have returned a few times later, but I can honestly say I haven't returned in years - and I live close by! The Owner (I think?) who works here - the friendly Korean lady - means well and has been nice to me every time I visited, though it hasn't compensated much for the quality and price of the food served here. The menu selection is not expansive by the least bit, and you can probably get the same food elsewhere for cheaper and in larger portions. I guess one of the main things that bugged me too was that all the food was served on paper plates and styrofoam bowls (for the less than impressive ramen or udon). I tried the chicken katsu once (missing it at home), and was displeased to find it already cut up in tiny chunks for me - probably to hide the fact that it was only ONE filet of chicken. I could've have bought TWO katsu chicken filets with rice and macaroni salad back home in Hawaii, for half the price of what was served at Bento Cafe :(

I have to agree about the intrusiveness of the experience there. Granted, I believe the "let me educate you on sushi" aspect from the owner is well placed, but it's delivered a bit "strongly". I've been eating sushi for years, but got a lecture on how to hold chop sticks properly .... as in, they were taken from my hand, and I was then fed the sushi (twice). I took my kids with me, and although it was awkward at the time, it was a humorous conversation piece for us after having left. Although I have to admit the sushi was of good quality, it is definitely overpriced to be served on a plastic tray with paper plates, and pre-poured soy sauce. Although it's a allegedly home brewed soy (and to be honest, it IS good) ... you work with what you're given when you walk away with your tray. There's no soy on the tables, and you have to go to the counter to ask for more (you're given less than half filled small plastic condiment container of soy). I paid somewhere around $75 for a moderate (emphasis on moderate) order of sushi for myself, 10 and 14 yr old daughters. Had it been a more high end experience, or more sushi than what we ordered? Cool. But to have plastic trays and disposable plates/utensils for that amount? Not cool. My kids wanted to go back b/c they found the owner entertaining (especially seeing their Dad fed like a kid), but it's too "in your face" for me ..... As the experience continually unfolded, I just found myself wanting to get up and walk out ...
(2)Brian B.
Do not come here. The food is a total scam. This is a place for people who don't know what Japanese food is. I got the salmon steak and it was tiny. The salmon was overcooked and brittle. The rice that came with the bento box was cold. The rolls here are tiny and not worth half of what they charge. The smoothies are a joke. Service is slow. They don't expect much business so it took over 30 mins for us to get our food. If you've ever eaten Japanese, you'll be disappointed. If you just want something that claims to be Japanese then you're at the right place.
(1)Lisa R.
It is over priced for mediocre sushi but the matriarch owner is hilarious, you have to understand the culture to appreciate it. When I was there she asked a customer if he was "made in america" or not, and went on about how she is Chinese and speaks mandarin - hearing this I say "thank you" in mandarin and she responds with "SYONARA ENGLISH IS MY SECOND LANGUAGE". What's not to love about that?
(3)Thaiha V.
For the price that you pay for the sushi at this place, you'd expect at least to have some real plates! The sushi is served on paper plates. which makes it unappetizing to begin with. Then you hope that the sushi will taste really good so that you could forgive the way it was served to you, but it's disappointing. I would not go here again. Avoid it like the plague.
(1)Keeley B.
People say its expensive but i think its the normal price. i mean get 2-3 rolls for 9 bucks PLUS miso soup and 2 appetizer dumplings..what other sushi place does that? It definately has dropped its quality of sushi (or my palette has improved?) but it is freshly made. im sure it depends when you go. I always go for lunch around 12-1. They always made speciality orders for my sister and i back in 2004-05 when it first opened "the lady" has never pushed her products on me but maybe its because i used to go all the time..alll that is new. i saw it lined up my last visit. I have only been 3-4 times since early 2008...i heard the prices went up abit but its cheaper than the larger restaurant sushi. And YES wegmans sucks because they 'tendorize or beat' the tuna (its gross and mushy).
(3)Susan N.
Worst food poisoning ever! I thought I was going to die. I had a salmon roll (raw) it didn't look as pink as it should have and in retrospect I should not have eaten it. I am so glad my kids had the California rolls, they're cooked - The kids didn't get sick. The door is filthy - the bathrooms smell - these all should have been clues. I will never go back.
(1)Israel S.
Grocery-store sushi quality. Much too expensive for a takeout place, some of the bentos will get you through lunchtime at a decent prixe-fixe rate, but overall I'd avoid this place and go a few miles to Jangko instead.
(2)Katie F.
YUCK! Extremely pricey and horrible. Avoid the color enhanced fish at this place with caution!
(1)Joshua B.
When you first walk into this place you are met by a very energetic lady, who tells you the sushi at this place is the best ever. She will tell you all types of crazy stories. However, minutes later I was disappointed. This place is not what I expected from a sushi place that claims to be the best around. First off the price is a little step for the quality of fish; secondly eating sushi off of a paper plate isn't how you eat sushi. The homemade soy sauce is decent, but not all that. The miso soups was sub standard, and the house salad was way over priced, and not very good.. The lady at the front desk, is very closed minded with sushi being her way only.. My friend asked for a Philadelphia roll (which they call a bagel or Boston roll) with tuna instead of salmon, and the lady at the front of the store made a huge fuss about it. After a few minutes of arguing she finally said fine she would make it with tuna instead of salmon. Overall this places isn't that good. The sushi is average at best, and the prices is very high.. I would not recommend this place to anyone and will not be going back.
(2)Big D.
Piss poor, expensive, imitations of Japanese food. They use Top Roman instant noodles for the roman bowls, and charge $9.00 for it. Horrible food and horrible service. I don't recommend this to anyone who knows anything about real Japanese food. Even if you don't know anything about real Japanese food, don't waste your money on this dump. Another reviewed wished they had left immediately! We felt the same way. They used sushi rice in place of regular rice. What Japanese, in their right mind, would substitue sushi rice for plain white rice? No one. Don't go. Don't waste your hard earned money at this dump!
(1)Aly R.
I've read a lot of complaints on here about the price of eating here, but what it all comes down to is you get what you pay for. If you want cheap sushi, I suggest trying the grocery store. If you want good sushi, this is a local family owned place I would definitely recommend. The service is excellent. Yes, the owner is on the chatty side, but she is very grateful and friendly, so I'd much rather have her chat for a few minutes longer than I would expect than have her be rude and unwelcoming. I noticed that she was more chatty when I said it was my first time visiting, so perhaps that was just her way of selling the place to me, and once I came back she was just as friendly but happy to let me have my privacy while I ate. I've tried a few different sushi rolls here, all excellent. The dumplings are also very good, and the miso soup is comparable to what you would get at a bigger chain restaurant. I've had her ginger tea several times and it is excellent as well. I'm happy to support this restaurant over the larger chains in the area because it is locally owned and family run, and you can tell that this restaurant is everything to the owners, so they are willing to go the extra mile for customers.
