Chinese Cuisine
The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

My experience here was great! I guess I have never really found the perfect Chinese restaurant for me although, I have been on that quest for quite a while. I was in Williamsburg for a couple days and decided give this place a try. I loved it! As a country boy, I think I've had every kind of pork there is but I wasn't too sure if I had pork belly before. It sounded disgusting but the pics looked good. So I tried it. The bomb! It was crispy and flavorful. I ordered Hunan chicken for my entrée. Bomb!!! Full of fresh veggies, wasn't just something heated up in a ton of thick brown sauce and the chicken looked and tasted good. If I could change just one thing, I would say it was a bit salty for my taste but that can be adjusted. The next time I'm in Williamsburg I'm going to stop here again.

This has got to be the best Chinese in the area. I live in NYC and this is better than some of the best Chinese places there!

The last time I went to the Peter Chang in Richmond, a new waiter was training there for the Williamsburg Grand Opening, which is how I found out that a Williamsburg location was even opening up. Thus, I made it a point to try out the new Peter Chang when I was in Williamsburg. This location has only been open for a few weeks, but business seems to be doing well. The restaurant itself is about twice the size of the Richmond location; the second sectioned-off room adds a lot of seating space. Like the Richmond restaurant, the Williamsburg one also has a ton of waitstaff. The menu offerings were essentially similar to the Richmond menu, although I felt like the prices were a tad higher. The physical menu was also a different color/design and made out of a different material. The look of this restaurant is different; it is somewhat less bright and a little more plain (but still charming). Food was excellent as always! The Dry Fried Eggplant is still one of my favorite dishes! Service was fine, although everyone seemed busy. I also noticed that the old couple running this restaurant were the same people usually at the Richmond location. They must have come down to help with the Grand Opening, although I definitely did a double-take, wondering for a half-second how they could be at two places at once. xP

This is by far, one of the best chinesse restaurant in hampton roads, I've visited this location many times, the service has improved a lot since the first time I visited it. For those guys that have been complaining bout service, I would suggest give it another try, you won't be disappointed. They have new items in the menu try one of the Hot Pots if u like spicy or try #36 such a great chicken dish with mushrooms and scallions not spicy at all, that's the first dish I tried and its so yum yum!!!! Go for it
(5)Nicole O.
BEST CHINESE IN WILLIAMSBURG. Hands down. It even rivals some spots in Los Angeles. It's great for big groups, the food is definitely made fresh, and there are so many options, you will never eat the same meal twice. I need to go back and try the scallion pancakes ASAP.

Peter Changs is the best !! Great food very CLean. A lot of choices . Also Diania she is best server always has a smile on her face:) I will keep returning to this Great place thank you so much!
(5)Robert W.
Peter Chang in Williamsburg and Richmond are incredible. The food is something special and deserves a trip or two or three..... I've eaten at both locations more than once and if closer, I'd eat there more often! 5 +++++ Stars

Lovely culinary gem in Williamsburg! I came in for lunch on the weekend with my father, and we had a great meal. Every dish we sampled was flavorful and delicious. We split three dishes, (not finishing everything), and I ate a fairly large amount, but didn't feel overly-full. That's the mark of a great meal. We will come back for lunch during the week, when the prices are a bit lower.

This is not good food. My friends always want to go, I insist it's not good, and once we go there everyone dislikes it. Probably the worst fried rice I've ever gotten from a restaurant. I've tried close to 10 of the dishes here and only one of them was remotely palatable. The rest of them were just completely bland. Even more frustrating is the price given how subpar the food tastes. I'd frankly rather go to China House down the street (standard cheap Chinese place) than here.
(1)Hong H.
Very authentic Chinese. Surprisingly good. Space is large and very comfortable. What made us decide to go is that they actually have Chinese dish names in the menu. Our food is delivered very quickly. We ordered: Steamed soup buns: not the best I have had, but decent Beef brisket noodle: mildly spicy, very good, recommended Sautéed diced chicken w. Szechuan chili pepper: heaven sent, highly recommended Tea smoked duck with deep fried onions: It is ok Mapo tofu: very good, recommended Some Fish fillet dish from the lunch menu: it's ok Clearly the specialty is Szechuan. All the hot and numbing dishes are worth of trying if you want to try authentic Chinese.

I wanted to give this place a 4-star but the service killed it. I stopped by here with a party of seven after a long day at the water park. We were surprised to see a wait in the front when we walked in. They told us it would be 10 - 15 minutes. We still didn't get seated after 30 minutes passed by. It turned out that they were having a big party in the back room and did not have enough servers for other tables. So even though there were many empty tables but no servers were available. My friend had to talk to the "owner" several times with hint that we'd leave if we don't get served anytime soon. It was just ridiculous how they were so understaffed. Fortunately, all the food came out pretty quickly after we finally sat down and ordered. Most of the dishes were pretty good, but everything that came with sauce was veryyyy saucy to the point of being overwhelming. Overall, it was a decent Chinese restaurant considering it is in Williamsburg area. I honestly didn't expect much, but it was pretty decent and nothing was "bad". I guess management could be improved with staffing appropriate amount of staffs when they have big parties.

This place is WAY passed its prime and needs a makeover stat. The ladies room plumbing was broken and the main dining area looks like a "cafeteria" according to my 10 year old. Service was fine - very pleasant new server had been there all of 3 weeks. Food? Yick. Sweet and Sour Chicken was loaded with ketchup-y sauce. Anything with 2 peppers or more next to it is too hot and numbing for us to eat. My husband who likes hot & spicy did enjoy the 3-pepper beef but it was flamin' hot (to me). Beef was tender. The fried rice (I got Young Chow) was great and the dumplings were standard. I would NOT go back. There are better Szechuan places hear us in Philly.
(2)Sally D.
Typical, Typical Chinese food. I can not see how this place won all the awards. If anything, they act like their $het don't stink. The guy behind the counter completely ignored us. Wobbly tables, burned out light bulbs, flys. Maybe in it ha day, it was nice. They're now just trying to ride the coat tails of awards given to a guy who is no where to be found. All you're typical inspired USA invented recipes- orange chicken, General Tso chicken. But don't ask for a fortune cookie. They turn their noise up. PS- it was seriously the worst fried rice I've ever had. It's good food and you won't get sick. But with all the hype, don't get yourself worked up, because you'll just get let down.
(3)Kristina N.
I've been to a few Peter Chang restaurants and I have to admit that this one is probably my least favorite, but they still have really good authentic Chinese food. I think you'll find that they have something for everyone - including the more well known dishes like sweet and sour chicken and fried rice, but the Szechuan is where it's at. I love the hot and numbing dishes and the tea smoked duck. For starters, I wouldn't miss the eggplant or mushrooms. Service can be hit or miss and the decor isn't really anything to write home about, but I come here for the food. If you want to try something different, I would suggest going for lunch. They have a good lunch special M-F, but you can order from the entire menu at any time.

Peter Chang's is so freaking good. It is really authentic Szechuan style food. We started off with the scallion pancakes which were good. I think the curry lol dipping sauce it is served with could be better. We also got the spicy wontons and crispy pork belly which were both delicious. For our entrees we had golden mountain beef and pan fired noodles. The service is good nothing to complain about. I have been to my fair share of Chinese restaurant and if they are really good it always comes with a price. The price to pay at Peter Chang's is the bathroom. It is kinda gross but the food is so good it makes up for it. It is by far the best Chinese in Williamsburg and they offer student discounts.

A couple years ago, we happen to be there for the opening night. We returned this past weekend...Because our son goes to college there. This past weekend, we went twice. We had the Tea smoked duck, braised fish, braised seafood, chicken and ginkgo soup, the spare rib and mushroom soup, fried pork belly, garlic spinach, lamb chops, scallion pancakes, grandma beef with wooden ear fungus... Everything was tasty and there was no msg (as far as my body told me) and I asked for light salt. It was still delicious. My wife has determined we'll go there everytime we visit our son who goes to William and Mary
(5)John H.
Excellent. This is probably one of the best Chinese restaurants I have ever ate at. Large portions, good atmosphere, and good service. I had the Hot/Sour soup which is really good, most Chinese restaurants are really not that good, but PC was spot on. I then had General Tso chicken, which was on lunch menu, but they made into dinner and it was incredible. My son had chicken lo mein and it was very good. Look at any of the tourist magazines or fliers and get the 10% off, added bonus!
(5)Philly P.
Food here is too salty and unfresh. Low Mein was realy salty which we had to mix with white rice to bring it down a notch. Vocanic Fish was tasteless, meat was dry and unfresh. However, service was good. This is just one of the places where they aim at college students and tourists. We will not return to Peter Chang.
(1)James G.
Finally got around to checking this restaurant out after they were rated as a best Chinese restaurant Coastal Virginia Magazine. I ordered Hunan Flounder with fried rice and it was delicious. And the speed at which they delivered the food after I ordered was unbelievable. I don't know how the did it but I was surprised. I will definitely return in the future.

Overall disappointed with this PC location. We have one in Charlottesville and have always had a good experience. We decided to get takeout from PC in Williamsburg and ordered it at 5:45pm via the website and then do a pickup to eat at our hotel. Well, approximately 40 minutes later I walked out with our order. I asked multiple times during that wait where my order was. The guy was so flustered. It wasn't THAT busy in there. He would never say more than that and never seemed to be doing anything about it. Also, the guy next to me had his food delivered to the wrong place...it was supposed to be a pickup and they gave his food to someone else! Never did I hear "we'll comp it," or "let me have them make you a new one immediately." Ridiculous. The food was decent but I would certainly not return with the service I received. The only reason for the second star was because in true PC fashion, it was non-greasy high quality Chinese food.
(2)Rich S.
BY FAR the best Chinese food in Williamsburg. Food-wise it's probably the best overall restaurant I've experienced in Williamsburg. The price is very reasonable for the ambiance and quality of the food. I had been to the Peter Chang's in Richmond before, so was expecting solid food. I got just that, and the atmosphere is a notch above. I came here on a Sunday night and the restaurant was about half full. There's a ton of space and the ambiance is casual, yet elegant- ideal for a nice date. Still, I noticed a few single patrons eating at a table to themselves, which to me is further evidence that the food is top notch. My dining companion and I were both in the mood for spicy, and boy did we get some HEAT. He had the Kung Pao Chicken and I had the Chicken Hot Iron Plate (#34) which came with a variety of peppers and onions. We both thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and food. I had hot tea and was served an entire pot for only $1.25. I'll also note that they offer white and brown rice and do not upcharge for ordering the latter. My reason for not giving the place 5 stars is that the service didn't match the awesomeness of the food and atmosphere. While attentive in the beginning, our server never refilled our waters and did not check back in on us until we were ready for the bill. She was nice enough, but seemed to lack energy and didn't try to engage us in conversation. Also, we both had enough food for takeout and instead of boxing up the food for us, we had to do it ourselves. Aside from the friendly and charming host, the other waitstaff seemed similarly blasé. Overall, Peter Chang is the bomb and I'm happy to have it so close to home.
(4)Troy S.
Many of the waiters/waitresses are really nice foreigners (randomly, a few eastern european) that have nice casual conversations with most parties. After exploring the wide variety (but not so good quality) of most other Williamsburg restaurants, many will find Peter Chang's a breath of fresh air. The meals are quite large and the prices very reasonable. I'd suggest not going during peak lunch hours (not sure about dinner hours) cause they can get pretty busy. Definitely stick to the more spicy Sichuan-style dishes, as this is their specialty.
(3)Sassy Z.
That veggie fried rice w/no egg is tasty!
(4)Keiko M.
WOW! Their pot set fire all over my body. But it was really tasty. This place is good for winter. They have many spicy Chinese dishes. The staffs are friendly. The waiter is pretty nice. The hostess wearing very short shorts was chatting with a male staff all the time, which looks weird. Pricing is ok. Simple soups are only 2USD. I didn't like their sour soup though. Free parking lot is around the building. Many Chinese ppl. Exotic. Not romantic place at all. For family. I'd love to go back there to try non-spicy dishes soon.
(4)John G.
Possibly the best restaurant in Williamsburg. Order the bamboo fish, tea smoked duck, baby wontons in hot oil. Anything hot & numbing.
(5)Barrett F.
Best Chinese restaurant on the Peninsula. Service was a little above average but the food was great!
(5)Jia Y.
One of my favor place when I am here. They have the best authentic Chinese food here. The service is fast and the food especially hot and numbing beef brisket, it is spicy and tasty, five stars. I tasted many other dishes and not one has disappointed. Keep up the good work!
(5)Mary A.
Dry fried eggplant, steamed dumplings, New Zealand lamb chops, and pork belly with mustard greens.....UHMAZING!!!
(5)Mitch R.
First off to start. The service is terrible. Secondly the food is amazing. Honestly the best Chinese food I've had in America and I've eaten Chinese food in at least 35 states. So pick your poison good service or great food.
(3)Jason V.
You can do Chinese food the way you have always done it...or you can do it way different. Get out of your comfort zone and try the puffy scallion pancakes to start off with. The curry dipping sauce is bananas. If you stick with a spring roll or something else commonly found on a Chinese food menu, you'll taste the difference between these and the frozen + reheated variety most places serve. For an entree, get something in a clay pot, or something Szechuan style and hot & spicy. Pork belly was excellent and not too scalding-fiery hot. Chicken & eggplant in the clay pot is so much food, it's two lunches instead of just one. I've dined at Peter Chang's NoVA restaurants in Fairfax & Alexandria (both now closed I think) and I'll seek his food out wherever he goes. Glad he's in Williamsburg and I hope he stays.
(4)Norm V.
Finally! A an old-fashioned and traditional Chinese restaurant in the heart of Williamsburg Virginia. Place is very clean and there are plenty of seating. Decor is traditional but not over the top. There are plenty of servers so the service was good and fast. We got our food very quickly. Now the review of the food: Overall, very good and savory. I recommend the spicy garlic sauce eggplant, combination fried rice, general Tso's chicken, pan fried chicken and mushroom with scallion. Their food is way better than the take out Chinese place. Definitely will come back here again. I like this place so much I cannot wait to go to another Peter Chang restaurant the next time I am in Charlottesville VA. Or the next time I'm in Rockville MD where I read they will open a new restaurant.
(4)Maria M.
We visited here during our most recent stay in Williamsburg and hubby got a Chinese food craving. Of course, I turned to Yelp. Decor was a bit on the cheesy side, but I don't judge a book by its cover. It took awhile for our server to come over. I got the impression he was new as he seemed very nervous and at one point I watched him drop a plate. We both love eggplant, so we decided to start with the dry fried eggplant. It as excellent, with just the right amount of kick. I continued with the chicken and eggplant with ginger in a clay pot. Another good pick! Hubs ordered General Tso's chicken and remarked that it was average. He proceeded to eat part of my dish (and we still had leftovers). We will defiantly visit again on our next visit to Williamsburg. I'm eager to try the pork belly and fish dishes
(4)David L.
Being Asian I have very high expectations and the food here never disappoints! The ambience feels like a cheap Chinese spot but the food has great flavor and spicy entrees. When there are lots of Asians eating at your Chinese place, the food will be good. Try to see what the Asians are eating to try the unique entrees. If you do not like flavor, just order your bland chicken and broccoli Chinese carry out meal and you won't appreciate the great selection they offer. I can't give it a 5 star cuz the ambience doesn't meet the foods' quality. So don't worry about dress code and come to eat some good food!
(4)Brian M.
One of our favorite Chinese restaurants, period. I let our 8 year old pick and she picked a winner in Peter Chang's. We had the sweet and sour chicken (excellent), chicken lo mein, and seafood in stone pot (in an awesome curry sauce). Our 5 year old even loved the curry. Looking forward to eating the leftovers tomorrow!
(5)Jeremy O.
Last time we went the food was great, but this time, the server got both our orders wrong, we would have told her but she never returned to our table. No water refills, no nothing. $60 and no service, we had to go up to the counter to get our check. We'll go back and try it once more, but only during the slow times.
(1)Sherry K.
Been here several times. Mostly carry out. Even though I order the same items, I never know what it will, taste like. It's always different. Check your carry out to make sure the order is correct.
(3)Michael J.
Scallion pancakes and the whole fish with pine nuts are both something you have to experience at least once. The atmosphere is nice. My wife & I go there for quiet getaways.
(5)Michael C.
If you find the gems on the menu you will be impressed! Go for the daily specials--definitely fresh and solidly authentic Chinese.
(5)Stella C.
Drove an hour and a half out of the way on my road trip from South Carolina to New Jersey to check this place out with family. Wait staff barely knew English. The scallion pancakes were basically flavorless, and the curry dip may as well have been gooey brown water. The died eggplant was good-- until I kept getting chunks of clove in my mouth. It was gross. Furthermore, the fried noodles were tremendously underwhelming. Don't let good media coverage fool you.
(1)Irv K.
We came here for our Babymoon on a snowy post-Valentine's Day Saturday night. We were greeted by a friendly host and were seated right away. The waitress was attentive and offered good advice about the menu. Lots of couples and large groups of William & Mary law school students were scattered all over the restaurant chatting about their professors and peers. The restaurant had a very open, modern and retro-fitted feel. This location has only been open about a year and 1 month at the time of this review. Parking was easy to find even though the restaurant seemed very full. There was a healthy amount of Chinese patrons which is also a nice sign of things to come. We heard such good things about certain dishes that we ended up having to ease off our dinner order. We started with the scallion pancakes (which were huge!) and the crispy pork belly (which has a kick and is very flavorful). The Szechuan spices were just what the doctor ordered for my cold. The soup dumplings were next on the table. They were delicious! If you've never eaten/imbibed them before, be sure to ask the server about the process so you don't end up spilling it on yourself. Basically, dip, place on spoon, take small bite, drink immediately from the area you bit into and then you can eat the dumpling. The soup and ginger was perfect for my sore throat. So far, the appetizers are right on...even though we didn't finish everything. We have to leave room for the main dishes right? Time to loosen the belt a notch or three! Main dishes=Jing Jiang Duck & Whole Boneless Tilapia in sweet and sour sauce. The duck was served similar to Peking duck with pancakes and hoisin sauce. The duck was a little bit salty for our tastes but flavorful. The cucumber slices helped to add some balance. The tilapia was delicious but watch out for the bones underneath! We could barely finish our meal between 2.5 people. However, I did polish off the tilapia and my wife worked on the duck. We both rolled up our sleeves (and loosened our belts some more) and took care of the dumplings and scallion pancakes. The only thing we wish we had more of was...more room to eat more! 4 stars because we had to drive from Alexandria to Williamsburg, Va. Final bill including a hot tea, $1 for brown rice and a Tsing Tao = $73 after tax and before tip. If our hotel had a fridge and microwave, we might have taken some home. We look forward to coming back OR the grand opening of a restaurant in DC! As we were leaving, we overheard a table of college students singing a rough falsetto version of Alicia Key's "This Girl is on Fire" but had replaced the lyrics with "My Mouth is on Fire!!!" I was waiting for a collegiate a cappella version to kick in shortly. Instead the poor guy was gulping down water like a fish about to be fried and dressed with sweet and sour sauce!
(4)Sydney L.
Really you people who are dissing this place have no idea about Chinese food. Granted some of the things can be hit or miss but honestly it is very authentic Chinese food. Try the dry fried eggplant- it's awesome and addicting-- for a experience of numbing hotness that you will not forget and you'll come back often. The Orange beef and also the braised fish in the clay pot with the baby bok choy are excellent you need to try them!
(4)Curtis M.
One of the spiciest Chinese pots in my life. It was tasty but really really HOT! If you wanna impress somebody, take them there. It's not romantic at all but wakes you up.
(4)Richard L.
We know Chinese food having lived in Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan and traveled throughout China many times; my wife is Korean. The food is OK but not extraordinary. The Dan Dan noodles, one of our favorite dishes were OK but very spicy; the eggplant with garlic sauce was very good and authentically Szechuan; the shrimp with mixed vegetables were mediocre with no particular sauce or flavor, although the shrimp were fresh; the pork dumplings were OK but nothing to rave about. The most surprising were the onion "pancakes" which I order often--these were bizarre IMHO--they came out looking like inflated ballons on a plate--just a breadlike crust with nothing inside and tasteless--I did not detect a hint of scallions in them. The service was OK but our server lacked any sense of customer service of graciousness for such a highly touted restaurant-- he was in that mid-range somewhere between being blasé and barely civil. Worst of all the décor and ambience were to put it mildly disappointing--it is too large and cavernous with three dining areas--very noisy with kids running around screaming on the bare wooden or tile floor, the furniture is old and shows signs of wear and the place has the charm of a school cafeteria--it isn't traditional Chinese nor is it modern. The price was OK at about $25 per person, no alcohol or desserts-- but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back there--mediocre at best!
(3)Michelle A.
The fried eggplant made my tongue feel REALLY WEIRD.... The water felt fizzy in my mouth because of the fried eggplant. Maybe it was MSG??? I don't know but i did not like it!!! The food was good, the Szechuan Pork belly was a little too salty. The sesame chicken was really good!! The lamb racks had a little too much seasoning. The tilapia was nice and fresh, but the sauce on it tasted like the same sauce on the sesame chicken. The Ribs were decent, nothing spectacular. Overall good!!!!
(4)Edward L.
Decided to check out the local Chinese restaurant while in town for a couple of days. Saw a couple of reviews stating the dry fried eggplant was good. Ordered that, the braised while fish in soy bean paste, and some pea sprouts. Everything was good except the eggplant. It's not that it was bad, just not good. Batter was too thick imo. The flavor of the sticks was very bland. The greens on top of them was tastier. The while fish was delicious with some spice. The pea sprouts were cooked well and were tasty. I found it odd that there were no chopsticks on the table as part of the utensils. I'm sure you can ask for them but still... Also, there were no sauces on the table (not that we needed them). Well, some kind of sauce for the fried eggplant might be good. All in all, I was glad to see that the menu had more than the typical beef and broccoli fare you find at westernized Chinese restaurants.
(3)Ryan R.
The food is really good and portion size is big enough that you can have left overs from both the lunch and dinner menu. The staff is really friendly, and the service is good at this location. I had a really bad experience at the VA Beach location which almost made me not want to try again. I'm glad I gave this one a shot. The best thing is being able to share dishes with a group. Will definitely come back.
(4)Susan D.
The food is halfway decent, but in no way worth it. It is also massively overpriced. The service at this location is abhorrent. I've both sat down and taken out food here and all times have been terrible, but this last experience finally put me over the edge. I ordered food online and paid in advance, which is probably what the mistake is. Once they have your money, they don't care. I arrived on time to get my food, sat there for 45 minutes, constantly reminding people and nobody helping me. The manager ran around like a chicken with his head cut off for 20 minutes doing nothing, and then I never saw him again, while a group of seemingly brain dead waiters stood in the corner. It was not until, after 40 minutes of waiting in the poorly decorated restaurant, that I decided to get a refund. When I asked for one, they "needed to get the manager" as it would be "almost impossible," and my food appeared 5 minutes later. When I got home, they had given me the wrong bag, and none of the contents were what I ordered. Instead: go to Bangkok garden! It's down Richmond Road and is decently priced, has a nice ambiance, and not run by what must be drunk middle schoolers.
(1)Chris M.
We ordered for delivery while staying nearby. The delivery service was on time and courteous. Dishes ordered: Dan Dan noodles: very flavorful and SPICY! It's a good dish and I can't have enough of it even though I was drenched from the spiciness. Mabo tofu: we asked them to add ground pork. Excellent. Just like how my mom made it Chicken with basil: whee..another spicy dish. Chicken was moist and not overlooked. Overall, excellent Chinese and I would come back the next time we are back in Williamsburg

Went with family to this place on Christmas Eve while on vacation with high hopes based on stories we heard about Chef Chang and good reviews on Yelp, but was hugely disappointed. To be honest food was one notch above the greasy Chinese takeouts one might get from a random roadside restaurant, but can in no way compare with restaurants in the metro DC area let alone NYC or the west coast. Besides the food, the decor is bad and the floor was so slippery, the latter of which I first noticed when I brought my daughter to the restroom. I then walked back with her to the table and out of the blue slipped on maybe spilled water or juice and fell hard on my back. I had to lie on the floor for a couple of minutes before I could move, and subsequently had a brief shock reaction feeling nauseated and sweating. During the entire time we're there, no restaurant staff came to check on us, although the waiter continued to bring us food and somebody quickly brought a "wet floor" sign and set it up where I fell. After the incident I observed one more customer slipped and nearly fell and the front desk guy tripping up himself next to out table. It's just unbelievable how they completely ignore the safety of their customers (and their own) and showed no compassion when an accident did occur. Overall, so-so food, bad decor, cold staff, and a VERY slippery floor. I would never return.
(1)Shanon J.
This food is great. When they say spicy they mean spicy. A must try. We asked the waiter for recommendations and he didn't steer us wrong.

Read the story on peterchangrestaurant dot com. Claimed to be best authentic chinese food in the US. I havent eaten everywhere, but I wouldn't disagree! This food is authentic and amazingly delicious. We had Fish Filet in Hot Iron Plate #42 with wood ear mushroom, snow peas basil and carrot. Flavor so deep, so good you cant help make gutteral noises. The fish is lightly battered and fried the braised in the sauce and so tender yet firm. Also had the braised seafood with spicy bean sauce in a clay pot. Unreal. Tons of various seafood and mushrooms in a sauce ive never tasted before. Im writing this review, eating it the next day, cold even, and still my wife and I are moaning. Eat here. This was a solid unique experience. The decor us nothing to speak of BBC ut the service was great, and the menu was a treat of a culinary adventure.

My husband and I are in town for vacation and were craving Chinese. After reading the reviews we decided to check out Peter Chang's since the only complaints we could find on it was the "ambiance". Which first of all was completely fine...I'm not sure what kind of ambiance people are looking for in a Chinese restaurant. Anyway, the service was fast and friendly, the portions were huge and the food was amazing! We would definitely recommend Peter Chang's if you are looking for good Chinese food in Williamsburg!

For a Chinese in Williamsburg, they get 5 stars but overall 4 stars Chinese place. They can compete with places in Philly and NYC. Their fried eggplant was OK. Based others review, we tried it and wasn't impressed. Their double cooked pork belly was excellent. It's not as spicy but love the black bean flavor. The braised fish with bok choy was a solid dish....kids enjoyed it. Their sesame chicken for the kids was ok...a bit on the sweeter side. An overall, a good place for an authentic Chinese place.

This place was fabulous. I read the other reviews and came here. Upon going in the place was empty. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. I have to say the tea roast duck was out of this world...Also the eggplant was fantastic.

Historically, Chinese food in Williamsburg has never been authentic. I like Peking as much as the next guy, but it's refreshing to visit a restaurant serving food resembling something you might actually find in China, or at least Chinatown, NYC. Some of the dishes are pretty exotic, but the menu is varied so if you're not looking for an adventure you'll still be able to find something to your taste. The most telling thing about the quality of the food is how often my family spots the owners of other Chinese restaurants dining here. As others have said, the service here is mediocre so don't expect to be treated like a king. The service has improved over my visits though, and hopefully will continue to. I hope Peter Chang's succeeds, it's probably the best Chinese food I've had in Hampton Roads.

Good food, bad service. Chinese sichuan styles. The food is spicy and well seasoned but lack of good service making 5 stars restaurant becomes 2 stars. I might want to just take out the order next time. The orange chicken I ordered for my kid is not something we can find somewhere else. Its overpriced and I think its only good when its on lunch special menu.

We have now been here a couple times for dinner and lunch. I am still learning what dishes are great and which ones are average. Based on the crowds, even at lunch, I would say that most people are happy with the place. Scallion pancake and crispy pork belly appetizers are both unique and worth trying. The golden chicken is good, but don't plan on eating much of it, as it is very heavy on the breading. It's more of something you would eat a small portion of and share with the whole table. Enjoyed the Jing Jang Shredded Duck and will have it again sometime. Overall, if you are looking to eat "Americanized" Chinese food you should stick to the Panda Express, but if you are an adventurous eater then this is a great spot.

The chicken here was absolutely delicious-- usually it's very hard to find a good Chinese place, a place that doesn't cook their chicken with too much dough or give it an overwhelming taste but this right here is a gem. The tastes of the standard Americanized Chinese dishes were slightly unique, which I enjoyed. The customer service is pretty average. In my experience you would have to ask for napkins, plates and my online order did not go through initially.

Visited a few weeks back. Me and my sis, were going to Busch Gardens for Howl-O-Scream. Figured this was my chance to try this place out while in the area. We ordered the Scallion bubble pancakes, Szechuan Bang Bang shrimp, Pan fried noodles combination and Szechuan Double cooked beef. In all it was great, though I did not care for the shrimp as it over sauced or the curry sauce that came with the pancakes. Also those pancakes are huge! My favorite was the beef. Looking forward to the one opening up in Va Beach!

I'm sitting in my hotel room the day after eating here; my family is sick with food poisoning. I'm reporting them to the health department; until you see a sign that says under new management, Do Not Eat Here!!!!!

Great food, Cheap for the quality and large portions. I had peters duck in stone bowl it was delicious, spicy just right. Good tofu and general tsaos, but get one of the special items not the food court regulars. Friendly and professional staff. Decor is fine nothing notable but would fail yuppie standards (come for the food duh). Very satisfied! Will be back !
(4)Jeffrey L.
I guess I got caught up in the hype. I ordered takeout, and it wasn't anything special. The food was surprisingly bland, in fact. The person who took my order was good, but otherwise, I won't be going there again.
(3)Rae B.
My favorite Chinese food place in Virginia. I live in Newport News and gladly make the trip for the dry fried eggplant!!
(5)Brandon C.
The food was ok at best. Reminded me of a bigger sit down Chinese restaurant. I ordered the General Tso's chicken and it was just ok. Nothing to write home about. I would go again, but it would have to be long enough to where I forgot what the food was like. The service was prompt but not very personable. The spring rolls were nothing fantastic. All in all I have better Chinese at home where I'm from. Overpriced for what you get.

This review is as much of a sparkling endorsement of the food as it is a condemnation of irrelevant and misplaced opinions. I'll be brief about the food. I'm Chinese and Chang's is the best Chinese food I've had in this area. And it's not like I found one thing that I like and that's all I get. On average, I'd say 4 out of 5 times whenever I try something new, I come away impressed. However. If you are expecting douchey decor to impress your date, or Sichuan food that has been magically teleported from Sichuan, or if you're hoping to find the most incredible General Tso's chicken known to man, you're going to be disappointed... mainly because your expectations are dumb. Call me crazy, but I don't frequent Chinese restaurants to take in the latest trends in interior design. And everytime I read a review that starts with "Well I've been to __(insert country here)___ and this doesn't compare to...." my eyes start rolling towards the back of my brain. Newsflash numbnuts, you can't get Chinese food from China here. But you can get Chinese food made by Chinese guys from China, which would be Chang's. And yes, we're talking about Chinese food. Not lunch specials made for the lao wai. They make that stuff because they have to, not because they want to. Ask for the dinner menu and spare yourself the embarassment. There you have it. Sorry to get all Dennis Leary, but the short of it is: try it, eat it, enjoy it. Is it a little pricy? Sure, but unless you can get Scotty to beam you over food from Sichuan, this is as good as it gets.

The most authentic Chinese food in the Williamsburg area and its phenomenal! No crappy American Chinese take out food here! No sirry. Just yummy double cooked pork belly, mapo tofu, and that intestine! Hmmm intestine. I recommend you go with a group and and order family style that way you can try a variety of dishes. Oh and don't be afraid to try new things!
(5)Sean W.
Was pleasantly surprised by Peter Chang. Who would have thought that you could find good Chinese food in Williamsburg of all places? The baby wontons in chili oil and golden mountain beef were both excellent.

This was really good, very authentic Chinese food. Came on a Tues night, didn't have a reservation, and the place was hopping. Got a table right away, and great service. I always order won ton soup to start at Chinese restaurants and usually, it is a sign of how the food is going to be. Well, the soup was delicious - tiny little dumplings, not too doughy or overbearing, the broth was delicious too, flavorful without being too salty. I had the chicken with ginger and eggplant in a clay pot. It was very good and could have easily fed two. My daughter ordered pan fried noodles with shrimp and what a delight it was. The noodles were very thin and a little crispy - not greasy at all. It was in a white sauce with lots of vegetables and the shrimp were a nice size. Very light and healthy. Others at our table ordered the Mongolian beef and Kung Po chicken - also excellent. Was very pleased to have found this place while on vacation. We are from the NY metro area so we know good Chinese food and this place is as good as home.
(4)Crash D.
Had a nice dinner there last night, Food was good and not too expensive. Did not try pigs feet or pork belly. Wonton soup was worth ordering. Wheelchair accessible for customers using mobility devices.
(4)Selene C.
I called the next day to tell the owner what I thought about the soup. At least he refunded my money. I wish I told them right there, but the waitress never came by and I was tired from jet lag. Teached me a lesson to speak up right away next time.
(2)Dhanesh M.
Had takeout for lunch from here. Very reasonably priced for a full meal. Food was good enough! Their spicy was spicy enough. I would order from here again.
(4)Andrew T.
Simply amazing. Authentic, delicious, friendly service, etc. Expensive, but worth every penny.
(5)Jennifer T.
If I could give this place lower than 1star, I really would. I ordered the braised fish with Shanghai bok choy, and this dish came out to be spoiled. My whole family tasted it and spit it right out. Not only could you taste it but you could definitely smell the sour, spoil-like scent. I told the waitress and she came back telling me her manager tasted the dish and there's nothing wrong with it. The manager (I believe) came out and asked us whats wrong. I told him the dish was spoiled but he denied it to be and said this is tradition chinese flavoring. On top of that, they made me pay for this dish. Disgusting restaurant.

Authentic sichuan chinese food? in Williamsburg Virginia? Thank you Peter Chang! Ok, so it's pricey. But considering I'd have to fly to Southern California to get something close, maybe not so bad. Make sure you order the numbing spicy stuff. Here's a simple rule of thumb: if you've seen something similar at Panda Express or a mall food court, don't order it. Some other folks I've gone with have ordered stuff such as the general tso's chicken (which still tasted decent) but I wouldn't recommend it. I love the cumin beef (aka beef with grilled onions and japalenos), all of the spicy stews, twice cooked pork, tofu skin (appetizer), crispy pork belly.... Wife loves the dan dan noodles and the bamboo fish. Daughter loves the bubble pancake, the jingjiang pork (think mushu). Don't worry about ordering too much--most of the food tastes pretty good upon reheating (not the fried stuff).

The service was good, our server was very polite and quick to please. The food was enjoyable and filling. While at first we were thrown off by the prices we soon realized that one plate of food could be split between two people and we ordered enough that everyone was able to get a little piece of everything! By the end of our experience, our party of 7 was full and satisfied, at a fair price of course!

I'm not much of a Chinese food fan, but Peter Chang made me reconsider. This is not the typical take out crap you get at a counter; worth trying especially if you like to try new flavors and dishes. If you don't like spicy, tell them so and they'll make sure it's not. The menu is so long that you almost think there are too many choices. Surprisingly the hot & sour soup is a disappointment, but that's not why I go there so can overlook.
(4)Char B.
Washingtonian feature on the new Fredericksburg Peter Chang's said it matters if he is the kitchen. That was our experience in the Williamsburg restaurant. A few good dishes (dry fried duck and mapo tofu, although an odd ratio of tofu to sauce). A few average dishes (chicken with chilis). A few poor dishes (scallion pancakes that were super greasy and cumin fish without cumin). The service was fine, although the waitress did not speak English (Eastern European?) well and couldn't help guide us on the menu.
(3)Jennie L.
BEST food ever! I am never disappointed by their service or food. I recommend Peter Changs to anyone who knows the difference between okay Chinese to authentic.
(5)John T.
The food here, today, was good - not great. The portion sizes are generous and the prices reasonable. All the "normal" dishes are represented. The staff was friendly and the service was quick. I started with hot and sour soup which was both hot and sour. There was plenty of vegetation and egg(?) in the broth. I enjoyed it. The spring roll was small but tasty. I wish they didn't bring all the spring rolls on one plate as I dislike having to share my dipping (duck?) sauce. I had Chicken in Spicy Garlic Sauce (my wife is going to love me when I get home). Spicy it was, with lots of what looked like slices of fresh jalapeno peppers. Served over plain white rice (fried rice is the other option) it was very filling. Overall, your average American Chinese restaurant fare. It's what I was expecting, so it did not disappoint.

We had the spicy seafood pot - it came with a generous portion of fish, shrimp, scallops, squid & an abundance of button & abalone mushrooms. The mushrooms were delectably coated in the spicy sauce & particularly good (as these mushrooms by themselves aren't known to be exceptionally flavorful). Be cautioned though, the chilli bits that came with it- the green ones are rather hot, though the red ones were really bell peppers. All in all- a great dish to go with plain rice! The fried pork belly was a winner to us- so crispy & not oily at all- so you didn't feel so bad eating it, although I did think I was munching on delicious bacon minus the salt content haha! The peppercorns, cilantro, scallions imparted nice aromas to the dish, & though we did think that the dish could've used Just a tad more salt. But it was a really good dish I'd recommend! Service was prompt, friendly, helpful. All in all, a great place for an authentic Sichuan meal. In fact, we think prob the best in the area!! Thumbs up!!
(4)Shah S.
What a great find! We had the potstickers, dry fried mushrooms, hot & numbing chicken hot pot and beef szezhuan. It was all really good. If I am in the area, I will definitely revisit.
(4)Vanessa W.
great authentic chinese food, my hubbs is from Taiwan and says its the most authentic hes had in all his years in the u.s.
(5)Mark M.
This is the best Asian food I have ever eaten!! By a long shot. If you like spicy food this is the place!! I've never left a restaurant looking forward to the next chance to eat here!! The flavors found in the hot and numbing selections are a delight to the palate that Americanese restaurants can't duplicate! Restaurants found out of town like this that are not available in your home locale are always a let down knowing you can't get it at home! I would recommend this place to anyone that likes food and likes to try different things in their culinary life! Thanks again Peter Chang!!!

Omigod, omigod, omigod, I must be in heaven! To those of you who don't know what a big deal Peter Chang is, we'll I'm here to tell you he is a BIIIG deal! I've just moved here from Atlanta, where he and his food are culinary legends, and his restaurants are on my Top 5 list of places I've missed! I had no idea he opened restaurants here until just now!!! Heading there immediately! Some suggestions that are generally offered in all of his restaurants are the Dry-Fried Eggplant, Pork Belly with spicy mud sauce, and clay pot anything! These dishes aren't for the faint of heart. They are SPICY (hot and numbingly so), but they are amazing!!! So happy!!!!!
(5)Kimberly L.
Best Chinese food in Williamsburg area and its really not even close. The Hot & Sour Soup is epic! Only bad is the spring rolls. Everything else we've had there has been excellent.
(5)Steve W.
I eat here all the time and absolutely love the food. Never had a bad meal and I have tried many things on the menu. I love the crispy pork belly appetizer, the bamboo fish, and the house special fish. The portions are also huge, definitely enough to have leftovers the next day.
(5)Matt C.
PC lives up to the hype. Completely BA. Do I need to throw out a TLA on this one? Nope. Totally SFW, but I recognize I'm not the OP.
(5)Kathy M.
I was hoping that this would be a great place since it had a big write up in the VB Pilot. All I can say is that I was not impressed . I've had better at China Buffet.

My review is based on my experience eating vegetarian fare on a sunday afternoon. No lunch menu available on sunday for some reason.. There were just a few other patrons in the restaurant and many MANY workers. We ordered the spring roll appetizer (3 tiny rolls for $3). They looked and tasted identical to the frozen variety available at your local grocery store. We ordered two entrees. The Nape cabbage with tofu skin ($13) was an overcooked and under-seasoned pile of white mush on a white plate served with white rice. The tofu had some seasoning on it but not enough and there wasn't much tofu either. The cabbage was waterlogged and cooked beyond recognition. We also got an eggplant dish ($12) that was marginally better. The eggplant was sweet, but again, just a total mush pile. There was a pepper icon on the menu for this dish but its sad sauce lacked spice. The few cooked green onions couldn't save this boring dish. I asked for soy and chili sauces which helped a bit. The rice wasn't very good. Food wasn't the only problem. Service was slow despite the number of employees. Several were busy on their smart phones or eating themselves. The room is painted and decorated in a really tacky manner. To top it all off they played an 80's soft rock XMradio station (with ads) way too loud. Won't return. There are great Thai and Vietnamese restaurants less than a mile away on the same road.

A very nice treat in Williamsburg. Very attentive wait staff. The food was excellent and served exactly as requested. Welcome to Williamsburg, Mr. Chang!

Everybody raved about this place, but I was pretty underwhelmed. The inside of the restaurant is not what you would expect from the prices- glaring fluorescent lights, kitschy decor (but not in a good way), prints from digital photographs that have clearly been enlarged too much. We were brought water in big red plastic coca-cola cups. My wine came in a glass whose stem was about an inch thick. On to the food- I ordered the bubble pancakes? Or whatever? They were good, and the curry sauce was good (if sparse- could have used more), but not mind-blowing. I was wary of the spiciness (I usually don't like things that are super-hot), and I had been warned that things here were super-spicy, so I ordered something with no peppers beside it, a chicken a mushroom dish. That turned out to be too conservative- there was no seasoning in the dish that i could taste. I liked the idea of the wood-ear mushrooms, but they tasted a bit- rubbery? My fellow diners were more down with spiciness, and they seemed to like what they got a lot. And they're good friends, so I'll probably end up there again. If I do, I'll try a one pepper dish. But stay away from the no pepper dishes. Unless, of course, they learn that to season food does not have to mean using peppers and chiles.

Reading the inconsistent review here. I am thinking, they must have done something right and they must have done something terribly wrong. I am a Chinese and I understand pretty well about Chinese food and cooking. Now let me share my experience here at Peter Chang, Williamsburg. The decor is not really worth mentioning, of course, most people who care for good Chinese food isn't going there for the decor. To have a good experience at this restaurant, you will need to understand a little about their specialty and what they are good at, those food items are turned around faster and less spoiled food. If you order something that does not get ordered they will not warn you about it and the manager does a terrible job admitting their food is not tasting right. There must be reasons I can't understand. After several times being there, we are working our way of knowing which dishes are good and avoid the less popular dishes, and remembering which waiter or waitress is good. So there is a learning curve I would say, haha, not expected at a restaurant, ey?

An unexpected surprise in the Burg. Great Chinese, decor is meh.

Great food! The dry-fried eggplant was amazing!! The bathrooms need some cleaning though

Very good Chinese restaurant

The most authentic food I've had in a long time. Everything was excellent!

We tried this place out tonight. It was not very busy when we arrived but it started getting busier after awhile. The server was very friendly and helpful. I was with my two kids and it was hard to figure out what to order. We decided on the braised beef with cilantro--suggested by the server. The kids did not like it. :( I thought it was ok. But the server replaced the meal for us with the orange chicken with was pretty good. We also ordered the puffed pancake appetizer which was interesting but a little greasy for my taste. We also ordered wonton soup. There was nothing real memorable about the food this time around. I plan on coming back and giving it a try. My ordering selection was a little limited since I had the kids and we were going to share. I would also like to mention....it is pricy. Next time I might try the lunch so we can save a little! Our one meal and appetizer/soup was $22. I think I will get it 3 stars right now but may change it later on the next visit!

I have no idea why there are so few good reviews for this place. This is the most authentic chinese food I've had since moving to Virginia from the NJ/NY area. I am seriously grateful that this place has opened up. I'm a regular now. The clay hot pot dishes are my favorite. The golden mountain chicken is to die for. I crave it!! I agree the decor is less than expected. For the prices and quality of food, there is a disconnect there but I'd rather have great food. One thing that disappointed me was that they served hot tea with tea bags instead of loose leaf. Though having the option of Jasmine, Green or Oolong was nice. This is seriously authentic sichuan style Chinese food. The flavors and quality are unmatched by anything else I've tried in the area. The people who say its just like any other Chinese Food place are mistaken. It is a bit pricey, but the portions are big enough to share or have more than once.
(5)Marian P.
The food here is barely better than what you would get at a chinesse takeout. We went for lunch and so had the specials. This may be authentic Chinesse food for Williamsburg but it is far from authentic to be real. Good for lunch, get the special.

The restaurant has seen big crowds since opening on September 28, and it's no wonder: the food is fantastic. The menu is similar to those in Peter Chang's restaurants in Richmond and Charlottesville. I was delighted to see both the dry-fried eggplant (crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and nicely spicy) and spicy dry-fried fresh mushrooms (tossed with cilantro and red peppers, good and salty, I could eat this like popcorn) on this menu. There are other Chang specialties like Bamboo Fish (pieces of fried white fish flavored with cumin, pepper, cilantro and scallions), Shan City chicken / shrimp (breaded and stir-fried with hot peppers - not for those afraid of heat) and the various hot pots. I've already made some new favorites: the Szechuan chili New Zealand lamb chops are impossibly tender, the coriander fish rolls are complex and cooling, and the tea-smoked duck with deep fried onion is simply out of this world. The menu is large and varied, and I look forward to trying everything on it!

nice service. nice place for williamsburg. went there for lunch and had the chicken and onions. lovely spice, lovely jalepenos with cilantro. pretty basic and fresh tasting stuff. not much else to expect. looking forward to coming back.
