Gourmet quality food at pub prices. Chocolate stout is insanely good. Great staff.

Very cool place in Colonial Williamsburg about ten feet from William & Mary's campus. This place has a sort of "mug club" where you get massive pours of the beers on tap for a discount. Pretty much everything on tap is craft with a focus on American craft and a few random English/Scottish/Welsh beers. Bottle list is large and I found about 2-3 beers I had never heard of before. Atmosphere is great- a huge college bar and a ton of fun. Can't remember what night I went but it was either Friday or Saturday and it was packed to gills and a complete riot. Very cool vibe and cool people. Excellent all around. Didn't try the food, but I probably would recommend you get sandwiches at The Cheese Shop nearby.

Excellent service and they have such a crazy amount of beers on tap - I think the count is 42. The owner Glen is really nice and accommodating, and have really great prices beer. My favorite so far is the seasonal Pumpking that tastes EXACTLY like pumpkin pie and is like 8.6%!!! We didn't try the food due to time constraints, but I'll bet it's great!

Could not enjoy dinner or beers because it was so hot. When asked why so hot I got..."you should of been here last weekend". As a business owner I would never allow that to happen. What I typically order and what was on the menu came out differently. Waitress said they are changing menu... Beers great but that will be my last time there.

We came here on a Monday for trivia, $5 burgers and half price pints. Apparently half the town has the same idea every Monday because service was veeery slow. Food was OK, beer selection was great. I'd give it 4-stars for the experience, but the restrooms weren't very clean and no one had replaced toilet paper in dispensers.

I love this place, but it isn't going to be for everyone as you can tell by the diversity of the ratings. I love it so much, I'd buy it if the owner in the orange hat ever decides to sell. It's a college bar. It's a local dive bar. If that's what you want, you should be as happy here as I have been for the last 18 years. If you want some fancy boutique, tourist trap, McDonald's, etc. you're at the wrong place. Pros: - diverse beer selection - fattening bar food - ambiance - slow service [^1] - too far a walk for the tourists Cons: - slow service - bathrooms There's parking in the back, but it's not great. Just keep driving down the road for 1-2 blocks and park on the street. Much better. If you see me here on a Friday night, say hello. [1]: This is a pro because you're not going to be rushed out to make way for the next customer when you just want to hang out.

(1) Their Kitty Hawk is the best burger in town. (2) Their fries are the best in town. I don't know how they do it, but they are so crispy it's ridiculous.

Huge disappointment! This has always been one of my favorite places for food and great drafts but no more. My mother and I came in for the first time in awhile for lunch. We ordered as soon as we sat down. When my beer finally came it was warm and flat. An older woman said that there was no one to fix it (maybe a broken cooler?), which was too bad but fine. After half an hour we still had no food but people who came in after were finishing their meals. I went to the bar to ask and was told 2 more minutes. Shortly after the same older woman (manager?) barked at my mother "why do you look unhappy". We would have been fine waiting, but since she asked I explained the delay and that we were hungry and frustrated waiting on 2 sandwiches. Instead of apologizing, she began snapping that she had only just seen us sitting there. She had spoken to me directly about 5 minutes prior... As she continued to snap, still without food or beer, we explained that this we were no longer interested and left. We went next door to Paul's and within half an hour we had finished a great meal and a cold beer. As '08 and '78 alums, I hope someone else does buy this place and bring it back to life!

Green Leafe Cafe came recommended to my group of four by some employees at Alewerks. I guess when there aren't too many other options around, this kind of place would come highly recommended... Pluses: happy hour lasts from 5-9, burgers are $5 on Mondays, fried apps were tasty, and the menu is expansive. Negatives: beers were kind of pricey, so half off didn't make them THAT cheap, burgers were 'meh', and service was painfully slow. Definitely reminded me of dive bars from my college days and had a fun time drinking and playing trivia, but not somewhere I'd recommend for dinner.

I usually eat here at lunchtime and have been doing so for years. Never had a bad meal or poor service. Excellent beer selection, a number of local and state brews but plenty from out of town as well. And understand this is a total DIVE BAR not a regular restaurant.
(4)Rebekah B.
If you can get past the rotting food smell emanating the place as you walk in, the beer selection and burgers are great. A good dusting and cleaning would go a long ways for those visiting while the sun is still up. There was a shard of glass at the far end of our table, not very appetizing, and I don't need to know the story of how it got there. Right across from W&M campus, so perhaps students don't deserve better?! I wouldn't return and won't recommend, but as a starving student, perhaps the cheap beer and food specials are enough to continue to entice.

Just your average decent bar: came here with a group so didn't get a chance to check out the bar but did order a drink and the beer on tap is pretty good, nothing to complain about. We managed to get seating for eight of us in the back in the evening hours and got pretty fast service. I mean we got our time to decide what we wanted and the food came in about 30 minutes for eight of us. Waitress was nice enough. Ordered a burger with cheese, extra toppings like jalapenos and onions. I thought the burger was good, just like what a bar burger should be like. Atmosphere-wise, well just a local bar-restaurant setting to hang out at. Would I come again if I were in the area? Yes. With there not super loud music, to have a conversation with friends. Yes.

Had not been here in years, like 30 years and the place hasn't changed a bit and not in a good way. As I walked in the familiarity was great but after we sat down I realized how dirty the place felt and the heavy smell of bleach didn't help as if they were trying to mask a mess. As I was telling my kids how often we used to come here after high school (back then you could drink beer at 18 in Virginia) we looked over the menus and order drinks. The draft beer selection was great and I ordered a local IPA which was delicious. We ordered the crab dip appetizer which was actually quite good. Next were cheeseburgers ,which they claimed are made fresh there .We ordered medium they came out like hockey pucks ,the chicken fingers were commercial grade the fries which required a dollar up charge were way too greasy and limp and soggy. The worst part is the mediocre food took forever to get there we eventually had to ask another server to please find ours so we could get our check ,and the place was not very busy they had no excuse to be running behind. As another review pointed ,out the place looks so dirty and dusty in the daytime. it is very evident that the current ownership is not putting anything in the restaurant to keep it updated. It's a real shame the place has a great location and with the slightest bit of investment it could be a really good spot.

This place has potential of a good craft beer selection, if the place was clean! The Dogfish 90 Minute IPA was some sort of raspberry beer tonight. I returned it and the bartender and 2 other bar employees tasted and agreed. They said the keg said 90 Minute..this makes me think they aren't cleaning the lines properly. Other beers we had tonight did not taste proper. Big miss on that! I would never return for food because the place just doesn't seem sanitary.
(2)Kim H.
Yummy crab dip, Reuben sandwich, house chips. The draft beer list is a mile long and with a selection of superb beers. Southern Tier Choklat is a must! Sloooooow service. Very loud.
(3)Pat M.
Going to be generous and go three stars instead of two just because of the quality beer selection and the fact that they have a cask ale available! Wifey and I went to Green Leafe for dinner (and a beer for me!) while visiting Colonial Williamsburg. The food was about average, and what you'd expect for bar food. The beef on wifey's French Dip wasn't the "melt in your mouth" top quality type, but tasty enough, and served on a pretty good roll. I was disappointed to find that the shrimp po' boy sandwich, which I saw on an online menu, was no longer a menu option. I opted instead for some sort of fish sandwich (rock fish tenders, perhaps?!) that sounded better than it tasted. I found it sort of bland overall. The fries and sweet potato fries were good, however. My beer choice was a poor one, alas, but that's not their fault...dratted bourbon cask brewed ales!!! The biggest downer was the overall service, which I ascribe to two problems-- first and foremost, they had terrible wait staff management, as individual waiters/waitresses had tables strewn all over the lengthy floor. Would have been a whole lot more sensible and efficient if they were assigned to particular sections. Second, our waitress was a classic "one thing at a time-er" for most of the evening. Good wait staff can - in only ONE trip - drop off a drink order, take a food order, check in to see if a table needs their check or refills, and perhaps even whistle Dixie! Not so good wait staff works in isolated stops and starts, and may not be able to tie their shoelaces and breath all at once!!! Overall, I'd go back for a beer or two, but probably find somewhere else to eat. One last funny note-- Green Leafe was one of the competitors in the first ever Jamestown Chowder Festival and competition on Saturday night, and embarrassingly served chowder with cold fish that didn't appear to have thawed, even well into the evening! Needless to say, they did not win the judge's or fans' choice awards!
(3)Richard S.
Good selection of beer on tap but it heavily favors the season. Good burgers at a great price. Appropriate for a spot right off campus. Good choice.
(4)Herbert M.
The food and the service were horrible! Arrived at 6:30 got our order taken at 7:00 food didn't arrive till 8. We ordered fries, a salad, pizza and pasta. The fries were burned, the dressing sketch and there was a hole in the pizza, as if someone had bitten in it.

We stopped in for food & football on our way home from holiday road tripping. The good - epic beer selection, the kona burger was awesome, their French fries were pretty good without catsup, and I loved the house salad. The bad - we had to hunt down our own flatware and didn't get catsup for our fries. Also the floor was sticky with this lingering smell of old beer. (ick) The ugly - they tried to pass off warmed nacho dip as a cup of chili. Luckily I was hungry, I love bean dip, and it was good bean dip. But really? We might stop in again if we're in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so. It's just another college bar with beer and (that night) football. If you want actual food, check out your options.
(2)Ryan W.
As a CW employee, you get a 10% discount. Went for lunch one day, it was pretty good food. It a relaxed atmosphere, makes me feel like home (ODU bars). Their beer selection is awesome

I ate and drank here during the july 4 weekend. My check was $39. I left a $7 tip which is more than 15%. When I checked my credit card bill, the bartender or whomever appears to have added $40 extra dollars to my tip. I contacted my credit card company and disputed this charge. I wish I can give this place negative stars for such UNETHICAL practice
(1)Benjamin K.
Pretty terrible. Ate here last night based on the reviews from yelp and other sites. Appetizer took over 15 minutes. No seasoning on the cheesesteak at all - tasted very blande. Reuben was ok, waitress cometely forgot the kids meal for my daughter. About 10 beers on the draft beer list were unavailable and not indicated on the paper beer list. There were a few good things. We had completely finished our meal by the time the brought out my daughters kids meal so the waitress aplogized and didnt charged us for it. The kids meals were all only $3 which is incredibly cheap. The beer menu was extensive enough that despite being out of a bunch of them there were still lots if good selection. Beer was fair priced not a good deal , but didnt feel price gouged on the booze. Would come here for beer but never would eat here again.

You can ignore the one-star reviews. This isn't that kind of place. Nor is it five-star worthy if you've spent any time in a city with more more than three bars that aren't part of a Ruby Tuesday's. So here's what you get: undergrads, and a huge selection of beer, most of which is worth trying. (Though the beer is probably more intriguing than the undergrads.) Aside from that you should know that the parking is terrible, the food is 'eh' and that the hierarchy of classiness in Williamsburg bars is as follows: 1. The Green Leafe: Lots of beer but you can't play table games 2. Paul's Deli: An okay selection of cheap beer and no one minds the sound of quarters 3. The College Deli: Cheap. Someone is probably throwing up in the bathroom as you read this 4. The soon-to-be-closed Hospitality House: Grad students dancing and wondering why they've chosen to spend several years in Williamsburg
(4)Rich T.
It was my first visit to the bar, which was around the corner from where I was staying. In the good company of friends and family for Graduation weekend, I was not surprised to see the college town bar showing off its craft beer selection. The food and service were good, bathrooms not good, but 44 taps isn't all that. While I could admire the vast tap selection here at the Greene Leafe, it wasn't a knockout list and it left me wondering how often the taps changed out. . The food was enjoyable and the menu was well placed to market its diverse wares to some discerning palates. The bathrooms were worse than I had seen in a while, even for a college town. If I had been a health or building code inspector, this place would have been "toast". I would probably return in the future to take in more of the menu.
(2)Holly D.
HORRIBLE service! I swear one of the workers was on some type of drug or maybe she was just stupid. We asked for drinks and she just got a handful of [unwrapped] straws and threw them on the table. Not to mention when we got our drinks there wasn't even a drink in them? Seriously man, just absolutely horrible. -10/10 do not recommend.

Tony and I, along with friends went to the Green Leafe Cafe after spending time in Historic Williamsburg. It was a beautiful day but we were ready to sit down and enjoy a drink or two with snacks. We sat at the bar. It took Tony at least 15 minutes to go through the long list of beers (64 draft and 150 bottled) before deciding on a flight of beers - yes, he's a beer snob - or rather, a beer connoisseur. Carol enjoyed the woodpecker cider, Glenn the St George IPA, and I had a glass of wine (half price specials). I rarely drink beer unless I'm sitting at a large table with Maryland steamed crabs in front of me. We shared the artichoke, spinach, and crab dip, which was served in a hearty brown bread - just to tie us over before dinner. It was excellent. I love it when a dip is served in a bread bowl. This is a place I'd like to dry for dinner sometime.
(3)Andrew T.
I'm sure Sodom and Gomorah would have three and a half stars too if their Yelp page included reviews from the year 12000 BC. At least if your wife turned to salt, you could pour it on the food to give it some flavor other than the fungus from the kitchen floor. A rotten, spat upon (applies to the food too) skeleton of what it used to be.
(1)Mandy B.
Great deals on Williamsburg's best draft selection between 5 and 9 (happy hour on Saturdays, too!) -- half off, cheapest beers are therefore $2. Nice atmosphere, and usually pretty quiet. Good service.

Jello shots. Sunday mug nights. Thursday DJs. Tuesday night photo hunt sessions. So many memories... The Green Leafe is your typical college bar - casual and welcoming and (like any neighborhood bar) if you go there often enough, the bartenders all know your name. I typically avoided this location on the weekends, as it was overrun with undergrads, but during the week I loved it! Located next to Paul's Deli and across from the W&M stadium, the Leafe (as it's affectionately called) is a prime location for students (undergrad and grad) and locals. It's one of three main "bars" in the 'burg, also known as the delis, and is often packed on the weekends. During the week can be hit or miss, and personally I always liked that I never knew whether or not there was going to be a crowd on a Tuesday. Quite frankly, I enjoyed it even when my friends and I were the only patrons. I've eaten veggie burgers and salads at the Leafe, but it wouldn't be my pick for a meal. This is much better as a drinking spot. If you want to feel like you're holed away in a cozy local bar, then stop by the Green Leafe for a mug and a jello shot.
(4)Sharktastic D.
This is the best bar in America.
(5)Nicole D.
The Green Leafe is one of the few bars we patroned in Williamsburg as we were usually with a group of Marines. They have a huge beer selection on tap and in bottles. Plenty of places to sit but only if you go early otherwise you're stuck standing up. I think its hilarious watching the Marines and Navy people interacting with the, ahem, sometimes snooty patooty William and Mary college crew. One area of improvement is the bathrooms- someone needs to attend to those better, they can get pretty bad after only a couple hours.
(4)Eva S.
The Green Leafe is my favorite bar in Williamsburg. This place is the only place to be on a Monday night with 1/2 off burger night AND trivia (shout out to my team: Cotton Gin and Tonics). The staff are kind, understanding, and enjoy a conversation. Say hey to Tim from me!
(4)Ashley L.
My boyfriend, Joe, and I were checking out Colonial Williamburg, but we wanted to get off the main drag for dinner. He had seen this restaurant referenced by a local brewery on their website so we decided to check it out. The place looked a little run down from the outside, but there was a cool 'old world' vibe inside that you dont get back home in Pittsburgh too often. I didn't expect much from the place, but I was pleasantly surprised by the beer and menu selections. I'm a cider fan and they even had a cider on tap, which is pretty much unheard of for me. We had a few beers and the loaded sweet potato fries as an app- which were delicious. I had fish tacos which were fine, but the salsa and chips were really good and fresh. I forget what Joe had, but I do know he didn't have any complaints. The only thing lacking was the service, but it was no where near bad enough that I wouldn't consider returning if I were in the area again. Our server wasn't really knowledgeable about the beer or the food, but he was friendly none-the-less. I'd definitely recommend the place to someone visiting the Williamsburg area.
(4)Tess D.
I recently returned to the Leafe after years of enjoyment through college at W&M. What a disaster it was! The fries and burgers were sub-par and totally changed. I used to go to half-price burger night very often in college because the burgers were so delicious. The beer list is extensive but often not up to date and not all the servers are knowledgeable about the beers. I know this is a college bar, but the service is so slow and honestly just below expectations in every way. I was so disappointed coming back here, I don't think I will be back unless I hear of major changes from my local friends.
(2)Rachel P.
As a William and Mary student, I frequent the Green Leafe because of its convenient location, delicious burgers, and great beer selection. There are many special deal nights, which I will try to list: Monday is half price burgers, Tuesday is pint night, Wednesday is $3 microbrews, Thursday is cocktail specials, Saturday is Margarita night, and Sunday is Mug Night. When school is in session, be prepared for it to be loud and crowded after 9. Smoking is allowed after 10. Get the gorgonzola bbq burger!
(4)KJ M.
Great place, great food and the best staff. I was looking for a fun place to go that was local and not a chain. My friend and I were treated to a fun evening of drink and food. Being from the West coast, we compared beer and food. The crowd was mixed with mostly college kids, but they were all friendly. Thank you for making a tourist feel at home.
(5)Mac O.
Best bar in Williamsburg, and one of my favorites of all time, anywhere. It's just the kind of bar I prefer the most: dim, dark wood, a huge selection of beers, incredibly casual, very laid-back. None of this bass-beating, disco-ball-dropping, meat-market bar scenes typical in college towns. When you're drinking at the Leafe, you feel like you're in a bar surrounded by family and friends (and chances are, if you're in school at W&M, you will know just about everyone in there, packed wall-to-wall Thursday - Sunday nights). The beer selection is tops, and I love the fact that they have a nice variety of local beers (although I always laugh out loud when I see Bud listed as local, because of the Busch plant nearby. Ha, I'm chuckling even now). I also love the fact that there is a large selection of microbrews, and definitely appreciated it even as an undergrad all these many years ago -- just because I'm in college it doesn't mean I want to drink Icehouse and Beast, thanks. The Leafe appeals to your more discriminating side, and I like that. The food is actually really good for bar food, too. It definitely won't be receiving Michelin stars any time soon, but I actually liked grabbing dinner there every now and then as a student. And can we talk about the soft pretzel appetizer? This ain't your average swing-on-the-rotating-rack-for-6-months at 7-11 crap: this is a soft, chewy piece of heaven with a spicy, sweet dipping mustard. Get in my bell-eh! Like I said, in the evenings (especially Thursday - Sunday) the place is definitely an overcrowded college bar if you show up any time after 9 or 10 o'clock. So if that's not your thing, go a bit earlier when the service is more attentive and the place is a bit quieter...especially on Leafe's famous Sunday Mug Night, when the college students show up with their brightly colored plastic beer steins for discounted prices on beer. In college, Sunday was the best night of the week!
(4)Kelsey H.
This is a great place both day and night. I've taken a group of teenagers during the day for food, and we were able to find a massive table to seat all 13 of us and we had great service! Usually when we ask for pitchers of water brought to the table, the waiters just look at us like we're crazy, but our waiter (I forget his name) was enthusiastic to get us pitchers. Our burgers came out promptly and were delicious as usual. During the day it's REALLY slow (we were the only ones in there the entire time). At night, it's definitely a college scene. The bar is amazing (try the York Peppermint Patty Martini!) and there are plenty of college guys (and girls) there, and it does get loud during the night. There is hardly any atmosphere, but that's not really a big deal in a college bar. However, the parking SUCKS. Like, even the employee's shirts make fun of this. I would suggest parking over at Zable Stadium and walking over, otherwise, you're likely to back your car into another car or a wall if you park at the Leafe.
(5)Spencer H.
I totally would have given this place 4 stars, had the bartender not accused me of credit card theft when I went to pay my tab. Obviously, I have a boy's first name. I'm used to people raising an eyebrow when I introduce myself, and I've had more than one potential employer assume I'm a dude prior to meeting me. It really doesn't bother me. Green Leafe was a different story. I have never been so insulted as I was that night. I had ordered a round earlier in the night and given the female bartender my credit card. When it was time to leave, she was no where in sight, so I gave the male bartender my last name. After flipping through the stack of cards, he pulled mine out, read the name, gave me a look and said "What's your first name?" When I told him, he copped a major attitude with me and said "No, it's not. You can't pay with somebody else's card!" WTF. He made such a scene that other people were staring at us, and my friends came up behind me to intervene. He then demanded to see my ID, which I dug out of my purse and threw onto the counter. After realizing his 'mistake' he didn't even have the decency to apologize. Having worked in retail for years and with so many friends in the service industry, I can tell you that slandering customers is not a smart business practice.
(2)Ed C.
great beer is great, fish and chips were spot on. This is an old pub that caters to a lot of William and Mary students. Do not let that dissuade you, The ambiance is of an old college bar. There is great pub food and the staff is very knowledgeable about the beers on tap and in the bottle.
(4)Mandi R.
This was my secret Oasis while I was in Yorktown for military training. Its a great place to study and have a drink, or bring some friends for trivia night, or meet someone new over an awesome craft beer. LOVE this bar, and it's one of the few places i miss in VA.
(5)Scot W.
I have spent quite a bit of time at this bar during work trips to the burg. It is a great bar with really good food and an interesting and extensive tap list. They also have a good selection of liquors, liqueurs and mixers. Their fish and chips and their fish BLT are the only food items I can vouch for, but they are both seriously good. The fish and chips platter is an unconquerable mountain of food. Their prices for pitchers are quite reasonable and they often have a pretty generous special going on. Definitely a bar-goer's bar and a great place to spend an evening.
(4)Keoki S.
The Green Leafe is a pillar in the bar scene in Williamsburg. It's the most popular bar for William and Mary students due to its large array of beers and drink specials during the week. They carry all kinds of beers on tap, from Guiness to local breweries such as Legend and St. George. The food is usually good. The wait staff attentive and sociable. You will tend to see the wait staff out drinking at the Leafe after their shifts or on their days off.
(5)Mark B.
Great college pub, with what you would expect. Loud, great beer, excellent pub food. Uncrowded, at least now in the summer. Widely varied menu with above average fare. Beer specials. Check their website. FUN! Not at all dark when we were there, a Tues nite.
(4)Wendy C.
To know a city really well, you have to seek out its local suds. This became my final stop after a weeklong pub crawl spanning 4 cities and 7 beer geek bars along the Amtrak line. Felt I had enough after a long night of liver abuse at Capital Ale House in Richmond and many other notable watering holes in DC & Philly a few days earlier. Since this was voted one of the top 10 beer bars in the nation according to USA Today and had a average rating of B+ on Beer Advocate, it's definitely worth a visit if you're in the colonial area. It doesn't take more than 10 minutes to walk from there. My friend lives an hour away from here. He wanted to explore the area's nightlife after our dinner in Merchant Square. Our options were limited to the "3 Delis" on the campus of William & Mary. What else was there to do at 10pm in Colonial Williamsburg? This place reminds me of most bars I frequent in the "Williamsburg" that I know of back home in Brooklyn (ad nauseum joke of my VA friend). The similarities are in the 1890's wooden decor, iron chandeliers, jukebox in the corner, a good beer selection, wi-fi bragging rights, and a mixed crowd of divey-chic hipsters, artists, and students. Forgot I was in a different state until someone started lighting up a cigarette from behind us. For as long as I can remember, smoking in public places had been banned in NY since 2003. As I scanned through the menu looking specifically for VA microbrews, my friend ordered a "Brooklyn" Lager. I quipped about our regional role reversals, but it triggered him to a politically toned discussion on "Virginia" ham and why outsiders (like myself) liked the taste of it more than an average Virginian. I don't know if we are friends anymore, but I still love the beer here. I wanted to try something I never had before like the Blue Mountain Full Nelson Pale Ale, but they ran out of it recently. They had the Legend Hop Fest Anniversary Ale on tap which I didn't get to try while I was in Richmond. It wasn't hoppy enough for me, so I moved on to the more smoky and bitter St. George IPA. In my opinion, it's the best beer in all of VA. Although this is the only recommended place in town for nightlife, I enjoyed my evening here and it made me feel pretty much at home.
(4)Sewon C.
The Green Leafe food is underrated! I love their crab cake sandwiches are delicious and they come with really good fries. Plus, they have a huge selection of beers on tap.
(5)Daniel R.
College DELI! Food is over priced. The beer selection is the only redeemable factor
(2)Lissa -.
Big college hangout across the street from the William and Mary campus. Cool bar, ok food.
(4)Lena M.
Basically a William and Mary hangout---both for undergrads and grad students. Don't go in there unless you are prepared to smell like smoke. Even if you're just in and out. Fun place, though, when you're looking for a bustling bar that has a wood feel.
(3)Chuck M.
Ok the owner is a tool, the staff kicks ass they have tons of great beer and every now and then you might run into some smart W&M socially awkward kids, some very cool W&M people as well. The one in new town doesn't have what the original has and that is character. I have been going in here for years in fact I live in Phoenix and still make it a point to hit this bar once a year just because I know a lot of people in Williamsburg and Sunday night mug night is off the chain, the half off burger night on Monday to nurse your hangover from Sunday..crucial!!! They used to do a trivia night for gift certificates if you are smart and don't want to pay your tab get in on this unless my boy Benny is in there you will lose. He is the loud guy that is pissing you off and hitting on your girlfriend. This is my favorite bar in the world. It says it all on their mugs, good food great beer bad parking.

It's cool. Service is not that great even at 4 o'clock pm on a Sunday. Lots of good beer and ok food. All together it's not to bad
(3)Andrew W.
I still have two Mug Night mugs! The Leafe draws a slightly older crowd (W&M seniors and up) than the other W&M hangouts (Paul's and College Deli) due to its somewhat stricter 21+ policy. Great memories -- I had several classes senior year that met at the Leafe! Nothing like sitting around talking about eastern European politics over microbrews.

Dive bar but with lots of stuff to like. So yes, it is somewhat of a dive bar and doesn't have the nicest bathrooms but the rest is quite good. The food is pretty good for a pub. My companion raved about the Garlic Grilled Cheese. While it would be nice if they had a vegetarian burger, the Mediterranean Wrap that I had was great. The bar had an interesting group of diverse people. The wait staff were having fun occasionally with hula hoops between good service to their tables. There were several HDTVs with NFL playoffs showing. Saving the best for last, the Green Leafe has a fantastic tap selection! With 30+ beers (maybe significantly more) on tap including a respectable selection of local beer from Williamsburg, Hampton, and Richmond and 100 bottles, this is a fun place for beer in Williamsburg. They have a rotating beer on hand pump. This is their older location, thou they now have a newer location too. Want a pint, this is where to go!
(4)Mochi K.
This is the only real College Bar in Williamsburg. The interior is all dark wood. The beer selection on tap is amazing. The food is ok.
(3)Britt M.
Maybe it was because we came here on a holiday - July 4th, but the young wait staff was somewhat rude, extremely unhelpful, and seemed to enjoy sitting around talking to one another or smoking cigarettes outside, as opposed to helping customers. From the warm beers, to the chef and employees outside smoking, to the jalapeño peppers the chef put on the Philly Cheesesteak in place of the green peppers that normally come on a Philly (it was either innovation or confusion...but either way it was unappetizing), our visit was extremely unenjoyable. As regular visitors to Williamsburg, we definitely won't return here.

Hadn't been to Williamsburg in many years, so decided to stop in on the way back from N.C. I forgot that the college had let out for the wiinter vacation, so when I arrived the town was pretty much deserted. After looking up bars in the area, Green Leafe looked like my kinda place. I was right. Had pretty much every thing I love in a bar. It was casual, had tv's for sports, had an enormous beer selection, and above average bar food. I would say it is a cross between dive/college bar and a local tavern. I think the term "dive" is used way too often and can connote some negative images. Now it was a monday night and school was out...so I would imagine that it was not as crowded as usual, but still pretty full. Also, a mix of younger and older crowd...so obviously not completely a "college bar". I had a fun night watching the game and sampling the wide variety of beers. Only thing I would be worriied about is mixed drinks. I ordered a red bull and vodka and it was the worst I ever had. Pretty sure they have red bull running through their soda dispenser and I guess that may be why. Also I'm sure the cheap vodka didn't help either. I learned my lesson and went back to beer. The bartenders were pretty nice and attentive. So no gripes there. My only real complaint would come with the guy they had doing trivia there. I had no clue what it was, so when I saw they were doing it I tried to ask him what it was about. He was very short with me and seemed bothered that someone was asking about it. When I asked a second question about how it worked I got another short, annoyed response. If you're trying to attract business with a trivia night, maybe they need to get a person who is personable. Instead he put on his "sassy gay guy" routine all night at the end of the bar with a few of his friends. They were very "touchy-feely" with one another as wel. It was pretty annoying and unprofessional in my opinion...I don't know if he works there, but he still represents your bar. I actually enjoy trivia games and probably would have participated. But this guys attitude completely ticked me off. I might have left if there was another bar in the area, but I guess luckily for them there wasn't. All in all, a good place to grab beers and get a good meal. Everything on the menu looked good. I ordered a reuben and it was above average.

Green Leafe downtown beer selection is great when they actually have in what they advertise or have on the menu. The food has gone from ok to bad over the last three years. They never cook anything correctly, if you send it back they do a terrible job or just dont fix it. Go there for drinks but dont expect much of conversation past 7 cause its loud. Oh yah and the bathrooms are beyond gross. They use to have great food.
(2)Andrew K.
I was really impressed with this cute little place. My little side salad was unique with crumbles and grapes and such things. My crabcake sandwich was also pleasant. My server was very cordial and accomodating. They like to advertise that they were rated top-10 nationally by USA Today. While this is an overstatement, it was quite nice.

I grew up in Williamsburg, so I realize the significance of this place (being the only halfway decent bar in Williamsburg). That being said, I feel justified in giving it a proper review. This place sucks. Sorry. It smells funny. I can't really place it, but it sort of smells like cheese and puke, combined. Don't eat the food here. I'm pretty sure that the cooks are all stoned out of their mind, which normally is no big deal, but I've heard some pretty awful stories of the level of cleanliness in that place. Last but not least, the beer. Alright, it's a decent beer list. But having lived places outside of Williamsburg, that's an average beer list. Sure it may be great compared to Paul's deli, but what exactly does that say? Everyone raves about the great beer selection here and I can't figure out why. There's not a single proper porter or stout on the list.

Gotta Say I am borderline 5 stars on this place! Monday Night, 1/2 price on Burgers and Craft Brews. I like it already! The burger was cooked perfectly medium without me asking. The Fries were, an interesting crispy fry with some kind of crunchy coating on them. take away for having to ask for condiments and a napkin. Add ons for friendly staff willing to chat and recommend a beer. take away for the four members of the staff that were too busy talking to each other to pay attention to their patrons. All in all a GREAT visit two great beers and a really good burger for less than $15 including tip! I come back this way I'll hit this place up again on a monday night! Sláinte!

I don't know where to begin, but this place was by far the best place to get a meal and a unique beer in Williamsburg, and for that matter, Virginia. It's a college bar without feeling like a college bar (in my opinion) directly across from W&M's stadium. The food was always excellent. I visited many, many times, and a buddy even had his bachelor party here. The beer list is impressive and you'll find just about every type of beer on here. One of the best was the (at the time) $32 bottle of beer with the frozen yeast cork. I forget the name, but it was brewed like a beer, but finished like a champagne, or something like that. While they have the typical bar foods, they also have other items on the list that are not so typical. I frequently got the fish sandwich, just because I eat mostly seafood, but the burgers were excellent. Teh salads were huge, and I really don't ever remember having any meal there that wasn't good! Where it was a meal after mountain biking the local trails, the location of a bachelor party, a place to meet for a date, or just an "in the neighborhood" check-in, the Greenleaf was never a had sale for me. The service varied, I have to be honest. I wasn't quite a regular, but If I lived closer I would have been!
(5)Lindsay G.
Pretty good. Nice beer selectiion but fyi the beer menu is completely out of date-ask your server instead. Had the So Cal Chicken sandwich-nice combo of chicken, smoked gouda, bacon, avocado, and spinach. I ate mine off the bun. Quite loud as it is near the college and frequented by students.
(4)Emily H.
I've only been here once to drink, but I had a really good time. The bartenders were good, and the drinks were strong. The music was on point, with a really good mixture. Lot's of pretty ghetto looking people there though, if you're turned off by that sort of thing. ;)
(3)Bradley N.
I had some memorable meals and even more memorable drinks at the Leafe during a year spent teaching at W&M. Holidays and weekends are big and brash, with lots of college-soaked atmosphere. Afternoons on weekdays tend to be more relaxed and cater to visitors, college faculty, and alums who tend to make regular pilgrimages here. You will find a wide range of pub grub and excellent beer offerings.
(3)Alix M.
There's a lot to like about the Green Leafe, especially if you like nachos, burgers, personal sized pizzas, and beer. I can't say enough about the friendliness and patience of the waitstaff -- birthday parties, professor meetings, happy hour, Mug Night -- they always take care of us. Bottom line, it's my favorite bar in Williamsburg. Good news: half price pitchers are back on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
(4)Stefan M.
Let me be clear, this is NOT a review of the GLC in New Town. Let me start out by saying that maybe I'm biased... Biased not because after 2 years of grad school at W&M, I spent a ton of time here, but because I can unequivocally say I think this is the best bar in the world. Atmosphere is great, tables plentiful, amazing beer selection, fairly inexpensive (although they have jacked their prices up) and a good crowd. The servers knew me and all of my friends here, and even on nights when things started to get out of hand, they always made not to be jerks. Oh Green Leafe, how I love you. It's not just Mug Night, the buffalo softshell crab sandwich, the Chimay Tripel, or your charmingly gross bathroom... It's the fact that even when I had people come down and took them to see you, they loved you as much as I did. Slainte...
(5)Lisa K.
This is my most favorite bar in the whole wide world. If you park at the stadium, you don't have to deal with the worst parking lot in Virginia. Problem solved. Mug Night is the greatest thing ever, and I will confess it's the only time I come. My friends and I lived at Mug Night for a good year, and there's nothing better than taking over that big round table in the middle and getting rowdy. The food is great--order the cheese fries with bacon! It's a heart attack on a plate, but it's worth it. Plus who can beat the gigantic mugs of beer for SO CHEAP! And they have approx. one million choices (not exaggerating...ok maybe a little). The staff rocks; we used to always get this great waiter who wore pink shorts. I don't know why he left, but come back, Pink Shorts! You were awesome. Even the undergrads who crowd the place and sometimes cause a line to spill out onto the sidewalk aren't as bad as they could be. If you are anywhere near Williamsburg, please go here. It's dirty and divey and fantastic.
(5)Alex C.
I'll open by being direct, if it weren't for the vast selection of beers on tap I would give this place 1 star. Granted its a pub atmosphere but even in that regard it falls short. Your food order is nearly always wrong the first time, the staff seems apathetic and more concerned with each other than the customers, and ask for anything other than a beer and you're met with a look of panic by the bartenders. This place is good for getting a beer after work...nothing else.
(3)Paul S.
It's well-documented that this is the place to go for beer lovers in Williamsburg. They do have a great selection, though it seems like every time I decide on a beer I want it's out. I enjoy the food as well, it's better than your average bar fare. The staff is pretty cool but the crowd is usually lame W&M students. Still one of the better places you can go in the Burg. Just stay away from the Greene Leaf in Newtown, it's nothing like this one.
(4)Julia F.
Best pub in the area...or the only one we found - Nov 15, 2009 Cute place, tough parking, fun-ish atmosphere. Would return because we didn't find anywhere else that was open or fun. For a college town I think we expected a more boisterous/college atmosphere.
(2)Matthew W.
I had a wonderful experience at Green Leafe on Scotland St. I do not like their other location, the original is just that. Having had an awful experience at Paul's deli, my girlfriend and I chose to check out Green Leafe which is next door. We were met with a very relaxing atmosphere, and some of the best bar service I have ever received. Ashlyn was amazing and I have to say makes one of the best White Russians I have ever had. Please go on a Tuesday or a Wednesday and see for yourself.

The name Green Leafe Cafe conjure up images of a vegan coffee house, but it is actually an incredible beer bar! The beer selection is vast, especially on tap. I appreciated that the menu lists where each beer is brewed. Being an out-of-towner, I made sure to try several VA beers. I favor wheat beers and was very impressed at their large amount from which to choose. My hamburger was fantastic - one of the most succulent I have had. It was gigantic, but I couldn't resist eating it all. The potato salad is also a worthy side item. Finally, the atmosphere is perfect. It had the ideal tavern feel with wood everywhere (walls, floors, tables, bar), and I enjoyed the numerous beer taps hung above the bar. Best of all was the bartender. We had a very natural, interesting conversation as I leisurely ate my lunch and sampled some brews. If I lived in Williamsburg, this would certainly be my local haunt.
(5)Anpan W.
The beer selection is fantastic. The food is okay. The homemade potato salad is good. The crab cake sandwich is messy, but tasty. Skip the bbq pulled pork sandwich. A townie now at Georgetown, a just graduated Ed.D. and a current undergrad all endorsed The Green Leaf Cafe. It has Hopleaf like selection (for Chicagoans) without the attitude.
(4)Ashley S.
Was really A-OK....Nothing to spectacular! One disappointing thing was that they didn't have patron. Lots of great beers on tap. Food was okay! Service was mediocre.
(3)Mimi C.
Because of it's proximity to campus and like any restaurant/bar, Green Leafe's clientele ranges from students, professors, visitors and tourists depending on the time of day and if school's in session. It's a charming restaurant to stop by for lunch. For dinner, you might see some professors catching a bite. The weekends and Mug Night will be packed with students. Get there early if you and your friends want a table. Green Leafe serves food that's a step above your average bar food. The salads are actually made from real greens, not just iceberg lettuce. However, last time I went for lunch I ordered a veggie wrap and I adore cheese, but I think my veggie wrap was misnamed. It had more mozzarella cheese than vegetables. My friends were happy with their sandwiches and fries.
(3)Taylor H.
I'm sad to see they've turned this place into a sports bar. However, the food is still great and the beer selection is still awesome. As long as college students continue to fill it up, it will still have a fun atmosphere. Still have awesome nightly specials.

When attending William and Mary, I worked as a cook at the Green Leafe. The kitchen there was a lot of fun, but there is a lot of fluctuation in how it is prepared. At the worst of times, the food is still ok (coming down to pub food levels), but at the best of times, the Leafe can produce some really great meals. The management is a savvy group and they keep good people onboard to make it a friendly and well run place. Finding it's place in the world as a purveyor of fine beers, the Green Leafe is the only place I have to stop when traveling through Southern Virginia these days.
(4)Daniel S.
Nice place to relaxe!! Good people, great burgers, and good drinks!
(4)Matthew L.
It's definately a pub first, but it has pretty good pub fare. They do some great sandwiches. The burgers are prepared well. I really like the meatloaf or the fish and chips. At night it doubles as an undergrad hangout for William and Mary. It is a Virginia bar, so be prepared to leave smelling like an ashtray.

Local. Longstanding. Legendary. If you're looking for the primo spot in Williamsburg to nab a burger, cocktail, or one of over 180 different kinds of beer, the Green Leafe ("Green Leafe Downtown") is the place to do it. Nothing within walking distance of the College of William & Mary has quite the reputation the Leafe does; not Pauls, not the College Delly, and certainly not Mamma Mia's. The main draw: the weekly Sunday Mug Night, which attracts just about everyone 21+ on campus with enormous refills of brightly-colored plastic mugs for reduced prices. Stop at one and it's probably your 21st birthday. Make it two and you're either just getting started or finishing up. Three and four mugs make the hideous Williamsburg townies attractive, and number five will keep you out of class until Wednesday. The food ain't bad, either. Although a bit overpriced, the burgers are solid, and the late-night onion rings hit the spot after a local Legend Lager. Bottom line is: if you're looking for tradition, this is the place to be. The best booze bang for your buck? Try next door.
(5)Cassie P.
I'm fairly new to the Williamsburg area and it's a much smaller town than I'm used to living in, but the Green Leafe wasn't bad. If you're looking to kick back and have some drinks with a few friends, this is as good a place as any. The atmosphere is very college-y and the servers are friendly. I would go back.
(3)Theresa S.
Years after leaving Williamsburg, I still talk about the awesome nights of plastic mugs full of Woodhchuck cider and cheese fries. I think that's a sign this is an indelible part of my past.
(4)Brian S.
4.5 stars I love this place. Best food, beer, and atmosphere of the delis. New TV's make it easier to follow sports. The service has always been terrible, but the beer selection makes the wait worth it.
(4)emmy f.
Monday 2 dollar micro-brews and half-price burgers brings me to the Green Leafe. It was the first place I went to as soon as I turned 21 (right after the ABC). The food is quite good, although a little bit expensive for my college budget. Parking is notoriously bad, but most kids walk anyway. I don't know why I'm writing a review for the Green Leafe. Every band that comes here for concerts or Fridays @ 5 comes to the GreenLeafe before and/or after the show. It's in such a prominent location that everybody who visits the college knows about it. My Chemical Romance got food poisoning here. haa haa. But Muse was spared. The Ska band Last Martyrs of a Lost Cause got crunk here. So... Yeah.
(4)Jennifer F.
Green Leafe is my kind of place. It's got a great atmosphere, decent food, and a great selection of beers. The staff has always been great and it's a nice, relaxing place to hang out with friends. I wasn't thrilled with the seafood bisque, but it's definitely good for a burger and fries. Being past my college days, I tend to go to GLC earlier in the day or in the summer when it's not as crowded with college kids, but it certainly is a place I would have liked hanging out at when I was at the height of my drinking career.
(4)Andrew B.
Great prices, setting, music and beer selections (tons!). Appetizers were good. Best neighborhood pub I've been to in a while.
(5)robert b.
Green Leafe Cafe...ok even the bouncer here is friendly. This place has a college atmosphere but with a cheers feel. There are regulars here, but not in a trashy sorta AA way, and with that being said I give this one of the better pubs I've been to. This place has something like 28 beers on tap, which I tried to do my best of trying as many as I could. There is one beer that even the bartender gives a warning too, the UFO, which is still "fermenting" in the keg. The Shots here are unique as their name sakes, from John Benet (you read that right) to an 8 year old boy, don't ask why their named that but simply order it for the S&G factor and shootem. Me and a buddy only got through 12 shooters before he tapped out...(they are cheap and very fruity...some of them are creepers). The food is average fair for bar food...I recommend the calamari and the fries...stay away from the tenders and the calzone....when i go back i will sample more of the menu...but really I wasn't there to eat. lol. The bar keeps here are cool. Very friendly and very much experts about the beer. If you are nice enough and ask you can even sample some...keep it cool...don't be a kiss ass. Go here on a Thurs if you want to be part of a live crowd...Fridays too. (come on its the weekend)...but even then on a weekday night this place is cool to go get some beers and drinks with friends.
(4)Michael M.
These other 4 and 5 star reviews are way off. The kitchen ran out of both of our first orders, and what we ended up having was worse than airport fast food. Cheese fries tasted frozen with a tiny sprinkle of cheese powder. Chicken sandwich was tasteless and the garlic grilled cheese sandwich was a horrible gut bomb. If the beer wasn't decent I would have asked for a refund.
(1)Matthew M.
Your standard college town bar...with a twist. Well, not that much of a twist. It's just a college bar with a great beer selection. The best part is they place your "standard" beers (Bud, Miller, Coors) in it's own list at the end of their beer book with a title that says "Macrobrews (Shame on you!)"
(4)William M.
Pretty good place to grab a quick dinner and a pint. LOTS of beers to choose from on tap, and a good menu that's much more expansive than usual bar fare. I would definitely drop in again for a good dinner, and a huge selection of beers.
(4)Chris L.
We used Green Leafe Catering for our wedding reception in Williamsburg and it was fantastic. We highly recommend their catering services and high food quality to everyone. The staff is phenomenal and will work with you on all your requests. 5 Stars!
(5)David R.
My wife and I have visited the Green Leafe a couple of times now during our stay in Williiamsburg. The first time was just for drinks. We went in the afternoon and the place was not crowded at all, which was nice. On the advice of one of the patrons, we tried the Angry Orchard cider. It was sweet, but quite refreshing on a hot day. The bar is sort of a dive, but I loved it. I felt totally comfortable there. The bartender was a nice guy and checked on us regularly to see if we needed any refills. We loved it so much we came back the next day with a friend and had dinner and drinks. I had the grilled chicken sandwich, which was very good. I couldn't make up my mind on what beer I wanted, so the bartender (same one as the day before) brought me out two samplings of pale ales to try. They were both wonderful, but cannot remember the one I chose. The bartender was also our waiter and he provided excellent service. Before we leave Williamsburg, we may try to stop in again. Sorry, no comments on the bathrooms, we didn't use them.
(4)Chris P.
We (William and Mary staff), come here at least once a week for brews & some tasty food. The draft selection is excellent, and, Tuesday nights Virginia Draft special is great. I've eaten here with my wife many times, and, the food is always good. They don't allow smoking until after 10PM (started that rule a few years ago), so I know if anyone lights one up that I've stayed much later than I planned. Beware, parking sucks here - park across the street in the W&M stadium lot, or down the street.
(5)Stacey P.
One of the few bright spots near the W&M campus - a great place for drinks after work or lunch/dinner. The garlic grilled cheese can't be beat! I typically have a hard time choosing between a side of fries (they make very good ones) and the side salad, due to the delicious raspberry vinaigrette dressing.
(4)Katie S.
The food is fine and the beer is fine, but the service is atrocious. A few friends and I were in a little while ago, and were celebrating a 21st birthday. We picked the Leafe because it allowed 18+, and that would allow all our friends to come and celebrate in one place. A few of us got there early, all under 21. We were Xed and let in, and sat down at one of their larger tables. The waitress came over and asked if we'd be ordering food or drinks. We'd wanted to order food, but weren't aware that the kitchen had closed, so that was a no go. A couple of people in our party ordered Cokes just to placate her so that she wouldn't bother us, but the rest just wanted water while we waited. A few minutes later, she came over (without our ordered Cokes) and told us that if we didn't have a 21 year old here with us to order drinks, she couldn't serve us and that we'd have to leave. Even when we told her we had a 21st birthday party coming, she still made us leave. I understand that she thought she wasn't making tips off us and just wanted us out, but had she waited five minutes or even listened to what we were saying, she and the bar could've made a crap ton of money. It wasn't full by any means, we weren't taking up valuable table space or anything. It was a Tuesday night and the place was dead anyway! She was unnecessarily rude and the whole situation was completely ridiculous. If you don't want under 21 coming in after your kitchen is closed and they can't order anything, then don't let them in!
