Excellent Sushi. I would rate the Sushi the second best in Virginia Beach (see my other reviews for #1) however the service and value for your money Yama would be #1. We ordered a California, Philly, Volcano, and Dragon rolls. Based on Yelp reviews we also ordered Candy Cane, Spiderman, and Friday Night rolls. They were all very good. As we were eating they sent us two other Special rolls on the house, an Iron Man and a Hawaiian roll. What a nice surprise. They were fantastic too. At the end of the meal they gave us cheese cake also on the house. When we were getting ready to pay they gave us a Yama coffee mug and a $10 gift card. So you can see why I would rank this the best value in quality Sushi in Virginia Beach.

Best sushi spot in Virginia Beach. The servers are always super helpful and mindful of my boyfriend's shellfish allergy. I never walk out of this sushi restaurant hungry! I do recommend selecting this spot if you want to spend time sitting and chatting with your friends or date as they are often busy so it takes a little while to get your rolls during dinner hours but totally worth the wait!
(5)Catherine C.
Lets get one thing straight I love good sushi. This place not only has great sushi but amazing customer service! I came in with 4 other people and we were immediately seated by the nicest server! We got the 2015 special. So two rolls a soup and a house salad. The salad was decent sized came out quick! Soup was good but the rolls were amazing oh my lord have mercy. THEY EVEN GIVE YOU A COMPLIMENTARY ROLL WITH YOUR ORDER WHAT THE YES THIS IS FANTASTIC. And they were special rolls not like a generic California roll, ON TOP IF THAT THEY GAVE US COMPLIMENTARY CHEESECAKES. They are doing everything right.
(5)May B.
This place never disappoint me. Tonight my husband and I received free sushi free cheesecake and a free hat. We are very very satisfied customers!

Generic American Sushi. It's a great spot to go if your a newbie for sushi. It really doesn't have anything too elaborate or shocking. If you come here early afternoon you can watch their prepare rolls for the dinner rush. It does get very busy here, especially lunch sushi box specials and payday time! The service is great, very attentive and welcoming! They offer a "free roll" or gift on the house almost every time we come here.
(4)Nicole W.
Service is great and the food is fantastic! I had the gyoza to start and then the Christmas tree roll. Eight bite-sized pieces of fresh spicy tuna and salmon with seaweed salad piled on top. There is ample seating for groups or smaller parties and very friendly staff. The cheesecake is a must.
(5)Rudy R.
Though is has many fancy decorations to give the appearance of genuine Japanese sushi cuisine, Yama's is just really a watered down American sushi bar. I was introduced first to a cucumber salad which would have had the effect of cleansing and preparing your palette. However the cucumbers seem to have sitting for a while before I received them, they were soggy instead of crisp and fresh. Next they bring you a soup and salad. The salad was fresh and crisp and the dressing tasty. Unfortunately the miso soup was watered down and lukewarm. They then brought me a clear mushroom soup, which while not watered down, lacked seasoning which I was able to fix with a bit of soy sauce. However I was disappointed with the sushi. This place does not use wasabi as they build their sushi. Any sushi lover knows wasabi is what gives sushi it's unique flavor. I was also disappointed with the imitation crab meat which showed up on my plate which would never be used in any pride filled sushi restaurant. Is there room for improvement? Yes. Could this place become a staple in Virginia Beach? Absolutely. But unless they change their execution and strive for sushi and excellence the right way, they will fade away like many other restaurants.

We were able to be seated immediately. The staff is friendly and attentive. We got our drinks quickly. One person in my party ordered the seaweed salad which came out quickly. My friend and I ordered a Kani salad (at the same time as the seaweed salad, mind you) but it took 20 mins to get it. That was annoying but it was a very tasty. Our sushi came not too long after the salads and it was delicious! They even give you 2 rolls and cheesecake on the house. Overall good experience despite the long wait for the salads.

I like to come here bc this only one of the decent sushi places to are open in the afternoon. Portions are generous and not to mention the free rolls. I've ordered here at least 10 times, and my food always comes out completely flamboyant. The sauce and fried stuff is a distraction and takes away from the real sushi taste. I feel Iike this place lacks authenticity. They have given their food away to American taste buds. Not to mention w/o the free rolls, desserts, and gifts would they get business still? Yes, but they would definitely lose costumers if they didn't have these perks being showered onto them. Can't beat the prices and location is convenient. Overall this place gets my cravings fulfilled. Time and place given I would go elsewhere.

Yama, Yama, Yama. My favorite sushi spot!! I don't go as much as I'd like to, but when I do go, the Candy Cane roll is ALWAYS a must!!! White Tuna, Crabmeat, Special sauce, arranged in a way to look like of course, a candy cane. This place as the best sushi in my opinion. Staff is always friendly, and even guys in the kitchen always greet guests hello & say goodbye when they leave. The best part is that guests/tables are always given a complimentary roll! There's not a time that I've been, where we weren't given one! Definitely a great sushi spot!!
(4)Mike C.
Excellent place, we only ordered sushi (take out) and everything was tremendous. We ordered 6 different rolls and avocado salad and they gave us 2 extra rolls for free! The people are really friendly and great service. The prices are really good compared to other places we've been to. Really friendly local feel and it's not "put on"!
(4)Erica C.
My husband and I received a free Spider-Man 3 roll ! And watermelon! Our food was very good , and service was great . We also got the Dancing roll and Hurricane roll! The hurricane was our fav. And both Are deep fried . I'm pregnant and can't have raw sushi so they worked with us on that . Clean and good service . I recommend going here !
(5)Katie A.
I absolutely love this restaurant, the staff is friendly and expedient, the food is great. I my self have tried the pork katsudon, dream, rainbow, dragon, sushi and sashimi deluxe platter and some more rolls I forgot the name of. Everything was delicious, the restaurant has a great ambience, only odd thing is that they keep playing the same 20 minutes of music over and over again, but it's not overbearing so it fades and you don't notice it really.
(5)JESSICA M.
Favorite sushi place in the world!!! I suggest the candy cane roll. I crave sushi from here at least once a month. I have been eating here for about 10 years and have never had a bad experience! I love Yama!
(5)L P.
First bad experience at Yama Sushi. After coming multiple times because it is still one of the best sushi places in Virginia Beach, service on this day is way below par. I watched as 4 tables arrived after us and received their sushi as we were skipped over and our waitress came over once in 30 minutes to ask if we were ok. When I finally caught up with a different waitress she checked on our food and said it would be ready soon. Another 30 min later after waiting longer than necessary I had no choice but to get up and leave. Completely disappointed. I will order ahead next time and just pick it up.
(1)Melissa B.
Servers do not keep their tips. No, they don't pool their tips and split them either. The manager pays them $9 an hour and keeps their money. When a paying customer leaves a tip, we assume the server keeps it, NOT THE GREEDY OWNERS. I know this to be true because my daughter was an employee! And she never got her last check or a returned phone call after several attempts. Sad. Thieves.
(1)Donna A.
Like the other two locations, the food is very good. I have been to this location a few times and generally when I am out in the area and crave sushi. This location is clean, both the dining area and the bathrooms. The servers are friendly. They are a little average when it comes to refills, picking up plates, and checking on you. I would recommend this location; however, Princess Anne is my favorite!
(4)Nick C.
Recently took my Wife here for her first time. this being my third. This place is very affordable for Sushi. Its always fresh. They give you cucumbers with wasabi for as a free appetizer and they always throw in a free roll on the house, this last time I went they gave us a free roll and a free cheese cake as we were leaving! The waitresses here are very friendly. I will continue to go here as long as I am stationed here. I would recommend this Sushi place to anybody.
(5)Cathryn K.
My boyfriend went here based on other Yelp reviews, and we had a really good experience! We ordered 5 different sushi rolls, all which were very delicious. One thing I had not liked about other places is that they didn't have enough fish in them, but this place killed it. SO much fish, and it was all delicious. We had the: Rainbow, Spicy Salmon, Philly, California, and Red Moon Roll. They were all delicious. Then, they came out with a free roll on the house, which was also AMAZING. (Iron Man Roll). Then, when we were finished they brought out a free piece of cheesecake! (Which was awesome, because I wanted something sweet.) Overall, a great experience & would go back again. Pretty reasonably priced...we paid $45 for the 5 rolls and a Corona. The only downside was the service was a little slow.
(4)Brittany A.
The service is very good, great even, but the quality of the salmon wasn't good. It smelled and tasted fishy, which isn't good when it comes to raw fish. There are a lot of rolls, most of which include crabmeat and shellfish. The general booth roll isn't a roll, its a deep fried scallop with chopped up raw salmon and tobiko on top. It was an interesting concept, but the scallop was rubbery and the bad salmon made it worse. The yama roll was pretty good, the best roll. We got it for free, Yama Sushi is celebrating their 11th year anniversary and give a free roll (any roll from the menu) and a slice of cheesecake on the house. The yama roll has lobster, crab, and shrimp in it. Very good and flavorful. The second best was the Christmas tree roll. Beneath the seaweed salad is a cube of raw tuna steak atop each cut of spicy salmon roll. Yum The rest of the rolls weren't memorable, one was completely covered in mayo (inside and out) and deemed inedible. In fact, most weren't really edible because they were full of that strongly smelling fishy raw salmon. I wanted to like it, I tried, but at the end of the meal I ended up embarrassed that I brought my hubby here and we spent $70 on food that we mostly couldn't eat. :(
(3)Erner L.
Very good sushi and awesome customer service. Only issue is the chicken was so bland and non seasoned, but then again it is a sushi bar. Everything but the chicken is delicious. Definitely coming again.
(4)Meredith T.
Whenever I'm visiting VA beach, Yama is the go to place for sushi with my boyfriend. The staff is always so friendly and the sushi is always top notch! We've gotten a free sushi roll and dessert the last few times there and that's always a plus! Definitely a hidden treasure! Awesome environment and delicious sushi!
(5)Kimberly A.
I am NOT a sushi fan, but I went here with 7 people. Out of the 7, 5 are huge sushi fans. I basically ate the delicious cucumber salad, house salad and tea. All very good. Everyone else ate several different rolls, General Booth, Spiderman, Twin Towers, Dream Roll, etc. and consumed them with enthusiasm. They also had the Miso soup that they all enjoyed immensely. As mentioned in the other reviews, we received at least one free roll and 3 slices of cheese cake. We left with LOTS of left-overs and everyone was stuffed to the gills (no pun intended!). My family goes here quite frequently and is never disappointed. For those of you who prefer your fish cooked, you can order cooked dishes. The servers are alway very accommodating and friendly. Portions are always generous.
(4)Ariel R.
I had the Iron Man, and it was DELICIOUS!! I'm not a big sushi fan, but eating here has Def made me want to try more.
(5)Meghan T.
Best sushi I've eve had! As a vegetarian most places have the typical avocado cucumber etc roll... They go above and beyond! Sooooo good, never ever disappointed! And ive got a free roll or dessert every time I have came which is awesome! Absolutely love this place. No better sushi!!!
(5)Andrea T.
I went here a while ago for a friends going away dinner.. TERRIBLE service. We had reservations for a group of about 12. We all ordered & Three other groups about 7+ people that did not have reservations got there about 20 mins AFTER us.. Ordered & received their food before us. We waited over an hour. Those parties had already left & we were still waiting. One of my friends had to eventually get her food to go because it was taking so long. They never apologized or even bothered explaining why our orders took so long. It was not during busy hours. & there weren't many other customers. Won't be returning.
(1)Dakotah A.
Every time we have been here they offer complimentary rolls as well as cheesecake. The atmosphere is tranquil with soft music and ambient lighting. Very quick service and waitresses are easy to communicate with. Quality sushi overall. Try the Dream Roll!
(4)Rikki B.
I love the sushi here!!! It never fails me!!! We didn't get one of the rolls we asked for and I was perfectly fine with that! But I was super sad that we didn't get our cheesecake at the end like we normally do!!!
(5)Jane A.
This place has gone downhill. I agree with Rudy's description, it's a "watered down American sushi bar." Anyone who has had good sushi will not pick this place first. They really try to conserve their fish in every meal, it is completely obvious. The miso soup is awful. They really need to improve their food.
(1)Ca M.
Nice atmosphere. Sushi is hit or miss... Sometimes its fresh and sometimes it isnt. Service is always great though and they give you a free sushi roll or dessert every time!
(4)Tracey H.
SO good! Will be back next time I am in the area. Superb service, table visit from manager, free roll, offer for free fried cheesecake. Totally recommend this place.
(5)Kaitlin E.
Hospitality is what makes this sushi restaurant stand out above others. Let me list the complimentary items my husband and I received during our visit to this restaurant. 1. Candy Cane Roll $10.95, 2. Cheesecake $6.65, and 3. a large framed hologram picture of polar bears and penguins that we later hung in our kids' room. I was a little confused why we kept receiving all of these free gifts, especially the hologram picture haha. We both order the Yama Special Combo meals. I ordered option 7. Friday Night and Sunset. It was alright but it's I found the tempura to be slightly soggy. I couldn't tell the difference between the two and was bummed about it but honestly they are described very similarly. "Sunset: Shrimp Tempura, Spicy Tuna, Crabmeat(Spicy Salmon) Friday Night: Crabmeat, White fish ,Seaweed Salad, Shrimp ,Tempura(Spicy Salmon, masago, tobiko)" If you're gong to order two special rolls, turn to the last page of the menu and order the special roll combo. For the same price or less, you will also get a soup and salad. Lastly, it is worth mentioning that there is no free refills on soda since it is served by the can.
(4)Miranda H.
Good sushi at a good price. Staff is friendly, super clean, and decent sushi! Spicy tuna rolls were good and they even deep fried them upon request!
(4)Art B.
The nicest staff & management we have ever experienced! The sushi runner brought out an Ironman roll on the house & the manager brought us cheesecake on the house as well. The food was delicious! There is a wide variety to choose from, & all of the food is fairly priced. We will definitely return, especially for their lunch specials.
(5)Elizabeth O.
Yama's was the first place I ever had sushi, ten years ago. We came back to the beach on vacation, and is still the best place ever for sushi. Always delicious.
(5)Jazmin B.
Amazing sushi! Great prices and great atmosphere. Celebrated my husbands birthday there and had a blast. It is officially our designated place to go out to sushi!
(5)Garrett N.
Great service, pretty good food, reasonable prices. Definetly worth going to. Plus every time I go I get something on the house lol
(3)Christina J.
Yama is my favorite sushi spot. I go here at least twice a month and I have never had a bad experience. They get pretty busy during their lunch hours since they have the lunch specials going on. It's a great deal! I usually get the lunch box- for $8 and some change you get your choice of two rolls, salad, miso soup, and dumplings. On top of that, they also give you another random roll "on the house"
(5)Mike O.
Great sushi choices- the rolls were made perfectly. The soups and salads were very good. Dessert was even solid- cheesecake, which is an unusual option at a sushi place. There is an anniversary deal right now that made the price even better. Met the owner and she was super friendly. I can see why they are so busy
(5)Claire B.
I absolutely love sushi and this is a top notch place. Fair pricing, delicious classic and original, sushi. Here's the secret... They bring you a roll on the house and a slice of cheesecake. Every time. Speedy service and delicious sushi? It's a must stop. 5 stars.
(5)John B.
Tonight was a special night. Grandaughter's birthday. The stuff made her fell special they brought her a slice of chesse cake with a candel and sing her Happy birthday. Those guys rock.
(4)Jene K.
I have been going here for over a year and my last visit is my final one. I usually get the same rolls and a friend and I went and got about 5 rolls between the two of us. Both of us have been going here at least twice a month so we knew what to expect. We were unpleasantly surprised when they were all salty. Too salty to eat- it was terrible! Now I am all for having an off day so no big deal- maybe they had different sauce? I brought it up to the waitress and she took it to the manager (?) We were informed that if we did not want it so salty then we should have either ordered something else or asked for less duck sauce. She did not apologize, merely told us that it was our fault for ordering what we did- which is the same I always get. Even the free complimentary roll was too salty. It was ridiculous. Had they handled the situation differently I would consider going back however seeing as there are better sushi places in the area I will go to them instead. Very disappointed.
(2)Bianca S.
This place is Awesome !! Free cucumber salad ! Free roll!! And free dessert ! Sushi was great ! Didn't take long at all. Great customer service. Everything overall was great ! I highly recommend this place !
(4)Katrina C.
Yes! New location! Finally closer than the one in Gen. Booth. To be frank, I've never been a super fan of Yama. Why? Because it isn't the best sushi around. Don't get me wrong, it's NOT terrible. Just isn't the freshest fish around. The rolls were quite tasty and moderately priced. The location is new, so everything seems pretty clean. The grand opening week was awesome! They gave away a free roll on the house, cheesecake and a small piggy bank to take home. But perhaps the best part about this place is the awesome service. The wait staff is super nice and are eager to serve. -1 for the frozen tasting fish.
(4)Tiffany S.
I have a really serious Yama addiction. This year is their 9th Anniversary, so they are stepping up their 'free treats' as I like to call them. Often it is a piece of cheesecake, a roll on the house or both. They have expanded in the recent years to accomodate their new found lunch rush and popularity, but I will always love to come here with my family and now my husband. Some of their best / my favorite rolls are the Friday Night roll, the General Booth roll, the Ocean roll and the Candy Cane roll. Everything here is truly delicious though so it's really worth trying. Their cucumber & seaweed salad is the perfect little snack before sushi, and the 'lunch box' with complimentary orange is just great.
(5)Cole M.
Great place. We order sushi from work a lot for 4-5 people. Today they gave us 3 free rolls, and an extra miso soup. Great spot.
(5)Jessica S.
I am by no means a sushi connoisseur but I like certain California rolls. Since moving to PA I haven't found the kind I like until Yama. The place is so nice and welcoming. The staff is so awesome and I couldn't recommend this place enough!!!
(5)Tiffany A.
My love and I eat here:) it's pretty tasty. The servers are nice and quick. They also offer random free things from time to time. Which is always a surprise.
(5)Andrew H.
You almost always get a free roll and a slice of cheese cake! The sushi is well made and the fish is of good quality.
(4)Ginger H.
Wow, big place! Came here with a large group and we had almost every combination roll on the menu! The rolls were exceptional!!! We did not have any sashimi so I cannot comment on the quality, etc. of the sashimi. The rolls are generous, unique and taste wonderful!!! Service was impeccable, quick and of course as everyone has commented...they give you a free roll to try. I definitely recommend this for awesome tasting rolls, value and overall experience!!!! Don't let the high volume and size fool you into thinking this is a low quality ... it is excellent food with great price points and they've figured out how to do it efficiently!
(4)Bun N.
Service was good but food was so bad. This Japanese restaurant is fake Japanese restaurant. Sashimi is not fresh. Sushi is awful.
(1)Mandolin G.
My fiancé and I both have food poisoning from this place. My temperature has been steady at around 102.8. I'm supposed to get married today and I don't think that I'm going to be able to. This really sucks because his family is here and I leave Sunday to go back home.
(1)Joseph H.
We love us some Yama!! Good sushi and does not take long. Get free roll too if u order certain amount. All rolls are good but like volcano and any that are fried - I know not really sushi but so good. Lunch boxes r da bomb diggity! Yama be there fo sho!
(5)Richard O.
I've been to this location many times and this sushi restaurant is the best in VA compared to others. I've always loved their warm welcome each time I come and the manager is very nice no matter what location she's at (too bad I forget her name all the time!) The rolls are delicious and the service is fast. They give random rolls/deserts on the house (varies each visit). Sushi lovers will love this spot and it will leave you in awe. And what's even better is that maybe if it's your birthday, they might be nice enough to give you a nice gift! Compared to their new place on Princess Anne road, this location is lively. I'd only go to the other location since it's a lot closer. Edit* They're service can be very slow during peak hours. I waited about 30 minutes for my food. Thankfully, conversation was passing the time. From what I hear recently, the waitresses are not as good as before.
(5)Lindsey P.
Excellent sushi, well priced, good array of options..gave us a free roll and fruit at the end of the meal. Would def suggest! Will absolutely return!
(5)Thomas B.
We visit at least once a month, and have been coming here since 2005. The sushi is by far the best sushi in Virginia Beach, we have visited numerous, but not all, the sushi bars in the area. Always fresh, had a problem with a hot roll once, they immediately ordered a new one! The atmosphere is comfortable, good thing they expanded into 3 suites, originally only in suite back in the mid-2000's.
(4)Maritzaida A.
It was so delicious! The service was incredible. They were very full (cause it's such a great place) and we had to wait a bit for our orders but then the food came... Wow! It was AMAZING! They really didn't have to but they brought us 2 (amazingly delicious) rolls on the house! Plus free dessert!! Come and pick any of they're creative rolls, it's worth the try. They're attention, they're detail, courtesy and such delicious sushi, made our night. Definitely recommend the place and definitely will go back. SUPORT local businesses!
(5)Justina B.
Every time I visit VA Beach we make certain to make Yama a must stop! This trip we went for lunch and yet again it was delicious. Even though the place was packed we were seated quickly. We had a delicious lunch box and I still can't believe for $7.95 you get two rolls, soup, salad, and extra rice! Yama never fails to impress - we qualified for a free cheesecake, but we were all stuffed so they brought out orange slices instead! Keep up the great work Yama! Can't wait to stop in on my next visit!
(5)Chris S.
The inside of this restaurant is fifty shades of orange on the inside. I think they hit every shade of orange possible. We went in for lunch and I was very pleased. Got the lunch box and it was more than enough food. They extra "on the house" roll was definitely interesting. Took a little long to get food but not terrible. They also brought out a free piece of cheesecake at the end. I love cheesecake. Try it out I doubt you'll be disappointed.
(4)Shana M.
My friend and I went to Yama for dinner on a Friday night. We got there early enough that we didn't have to wait for a table. We were seated quickly and drink orders were taken. After looking over the menu for a few minutes, our waitress came to take our order. She was very polite, no complaints about our service. Appetizers came out and soon after, our sushi. In addition to what we ordered, we were given a free roll. No complaints there! All in all, food was good and servers were attentive. The only complaint I have really is how expensive it was. My bill alone was almost $30 and that was for only two rolls, an appetizer and drink. You pay per can of soda, so no free refills. I've been to all you can eat sushi restaurants in the area where I paid less, ate more and the food was just as good.
(3)Meghan C.
The ambience is dim with orange lighting, which I was not a fan of. The seating is mainly booth style with an almost hidden bathroom. I thought the food was average and we did get a free roll and a cheesecake slice for dessert. If you're looking for average food, this is the place for you
(3)Duane D.
If you're not in the know as far as sushi restaurants in the Virginia Beach area go you would probably not even realize Yama Sushi exists. I say that because it's tucked away in a location you would least expect. Trust me, you want to sought out this restaurant behind the Wendy's on General Booth Blvd because they hook you up, the sushi and service are on point. Yama has been in business for over 9 years and they have managed to expand the dining room area to accomodate their growth in customers. I always gravitate toward the Christmas Tree roll (Spicy Salmon Rolls underneath, Spicy Tuna Tataki, and Seaweed Salad). The fish always tastes fresh and the sauces they use do well in complementing the flavor in the rolls. One thing that has always been consistent in my dining experiences here is that they always provide the table with an extra roll on the house for the table to enjoy (usually a Shrimp Tempura roll or something else that is a crowd pleaser). On my last visit to celebrate their 9th anniversary they offered our table of four 2 extra rolls, a slice of cheesecake for dessert and a wooden flower vase on the house. Not to say that the food we ordered wasn't good enough, but it definitely was a nice surprise to say the least. Yama also does a good amount of business during lunch hours as I've often gone into the restaurant and seen locals as well as officers from the local navy bases visit here. There are many sushi restaurants in the Hampton Roads area to go to that offer great value with AYCE specials. Although Yama doesn't do so it really doesn't need to because of the quality of their product and the consistency customers have come to enjoy time and time again. Definitely a fan!
(4)Milly C.
I've had numerous rolls and I love them all! They always give you a free roll and sometimes even a free dessert. Although they are a little pricey for dinner, it is worth it. No matter how busy they are, the service is always great.
(5)Becky V.
Used the be my favorite restaurant. Go at least once a month however I won't be back. Food doesn't taste the same from visit to visit and service is horrible. Not sure if all the good people went to their new location or what but it stinks that Yama has deteriorated this badly so fast.
(1)Renee H.
I usually go to the one in Volvo (it's new) and they have great sushi & the lunch box is good cheap & lots of food!!
(5)Jon N.
Service was excellent! Food was great. Salmon sashimi platter was the bomb. Christina was excellent. Ya Ya! Thanks! Last samurai!
(5)Angie M.
Went here for lunch with a co-worker. The strip mall looks a little seedy, so I wasn't too hopeful. But, I was pleasantly surprised! The lunch boxes are good, sushi is fresh, and they even brought us a small roll on the house to try out. Service is fast and good. Clean inside, as opposed to the lot. Would return if in the area.
(4)Brian C.
Stopped in here on Saturday as a group choice after golfing. I'd heard about this place, but never had been to it. Upon entry I immediately liked the atmosphere. It's very chill, dim lighting but attractive and I like that. Courteous and friendly wait staff. A friend recommended the Candycane Roll, said it's the best thing you'll ever have. This turned out to be true. The Candycane Roll was the most amazing thing I've had in the world of Sushi. I WILL go back there to eat one again. A couple tall boys of Sapporo go down great with this too. They also gave a free roll as an appetizer as well as a complimentary slice of cheesecake to share for dessert.
(5)Lorrena T.
I compare all sushi places to this place because it's just that great. Reasonably priced for the size of their rolls; ranging anywhere from $10 - $14. Trust me, though, it is money well spent, especially if you're looking to satisfy that sushi craving. You will not be disappointed. The service is great, the ambience is chill. Last time I was there, I was with no less than 25 people, so they accomodate large groups fairly well. And the plus side to groups? Sushi rolls on the house! But from what I understand, they do free rolls all the time, depending on how much you order. I recommend the Candy Cane roll, Volcano Roll, or the Stone Roll. Those are all my favorites, but then again, I would recommend anything on their menu. Btw, I reside in NJ, and I just enjoyed the experience and the sushi I had at Yama so much that I would take a 6-hr trip to VA Beach just to eat thereagain. Talk about hype! This is definitely my number one sushi joints of all time.

The food here is always amazing. My favorite is the Iron Man Roll. They almost always give us am extra roll on the house, so we get to try new ones all the time. The latest time I was there we even got cheesecake on the house which was delicious. I love this place!
(4)Tamara B.
Good food. If you order takeout they always have it ready to go. Prices are in line with other sushi restaurants in the area.

I'd say Yama is 3.5 stars I've been coming here since Yama just occupied one unit in that tiny shopping center. Back then I loved it so much! Now I only go because my best friend loves their volcano rolls and feels like no one else can do it like Yama. For the price, Yama is good. The rolls have gotten smaller and yeah, they still hook everyone up with a free roll, but I feel like they've gotten so popular in the past few years that they barely know how to handle it. I felt very very rushed today when I came in for lunch. I know Yama is the hotspot for lunch nowadays especially with their $7.95 lunchbox and free roll they give to every table. But, our waitress was so rushed that I barely understood her when she spoke. She would plop things down on our table and run off to the next one and blurt some more stuff that no one could understand. She gave us our complimentary oranges when my friend and I had just started on our lunchboxes and gave us our check when we were about halfway done. After that she just ignored us. I feel like nowadays they're more about turnover rather than keeping the customer happy. Food and prices are decent, but let me enjoy it please :(

I have NO idea what sushi restaurant these people ate at, but this was literally the worst sushi I have ever had in my entire life. You poor deprived people, or you poor people on crack. Ok, this is literally what my food was...I had a roll that had imitation crab meat as the only thing stuffed in the center, with slices of imitation crab meat on top, topped with eel sauce. Only satan would even invent such a roll, let alone charge $12 for that. I had another one with a fish that I couldn't detect and had the consistency of soggy mushrooms, with what I can only describe as buffalo hot wing sauce (not a spicy mayo). And guess what?! It was also stuffed with imitation crab. The sushi dinner was terrible. Of the 9 pieces, the tuna tasted like a trashcan, and there it was again, more imitation crab slices. Am I at Wal-mart? I requested no imitation crab. Holy hell people, we are in Virginia Beach, land of the Chesapeake Blue crab. I've had better sushi in the middle of the desert. There is just no excuse for this. In fact at this point, and this is the only time I will ever say this, I would have rather eaten sushi from Wal-mart...in a desert...out of a trashcan. My kids got steak teriyaki. Or should I say steak goopy corn starch. It tasted like dish soap or toilet bowl cleaner. I am not kidding at all. If you want great sushi, just go to Hanaki. Don't waste your time at Yamagoopy sushi. Oh why did Elbow rd. have to flooded!!
(1)Ryan C.
Good sushi, solid beer selection, and we received an extra roll and a dessert on the house. What more can you ask for?
(5)Kevin S.
This was my first visit and I was seeking a nice dinner. I must admit the shop set back off the road with minimal lighting and a small entrance made me question the reviews but as I entered I realized it was easily three times larger than it appeared outside and a large crowd had stopped in for dinner on a weekday. On patronage alone I was pretty sure it was the right choice. Service was outstanding, adorable and attentive. Our waitress was quick to bring our meals and even included a complimentary roll of the chefs choice. Each dish was well prepared, fresh and consisted of generous portions. I will be returning back to Yama's when I have my next sushi urge but highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys good sushi.
(5)Yajaida P.
This review is entirely skewed by the price point. For a sushi fan on a budget this is the best you're going to get. Is it the best sushi in Hampton Roads? That's a big negative. But the rolls here are reasonably priced and they give you one free every time you order. My favorite menu item is the sumanomo salad, which is a few pieces of sashimi over a krab salad. They are closed between lunch and dinner, and service here can be very slow. But when we go out for sushi and want to keep it under three digits, this is where we go.
(4)Joy L.
Excellent and fast service. Food was fresh and flavorful. When they say spicy they mean it so keep that in mind when ordering the spicy rolls. We were also given a free tempura roll and a cheesecake. I'll definitely be back for more.
(4)Ashley O.
CERTIFIED YAMA ADDICT Without a doubt my favorite place to get sushi .. My favorite rolls include: Candy Cane, Friday Night, Shrimp Tempera, Salad Roll, and Volcano
(5)Kirstin G.
Love this place! Best sushi restaurant in Virginia beach! Always the best service, never too long of a wait for your dinner, even on the busy nights. Definitely recommend this place!!
(5)Melissa M.
Good got the price but the lunch device is slow, not the place if you need to get back to work in a hurry
(4)Mike A.
I think people like this place so much because you generally get a free roll or dessert when you go, otherwise I can't see what the big deal is. I always try a sushi / sashimi combo when I first go to a restaurant to gauge how good of quality the fish is, and here it's mediocre at best. They do have some unique / different rolls, if you're going to go, I would suggest sticking with those.
(2)Ellen H.
I love love love this place. The sushi is amazing! Service is alright. Sometimes ignored when you first walk in but that usually does not happen. Delicious!
(4)Thomas R.
Terrific sushi at reasonable prices combined with super friendly service. What a great find during our first night in Virginia Beach.
(5)Brandon S.
By far, the best sushi in the area. My favorite sushi place anywhere! The staff is always super friendly and you never leave without some sort of gift (whether it be free food, dessert, or even a statue of some sort). This is ALWAYS the place I recommend to people not from the area.
(5)Art K.
Excellent sushi! Appreciated the complimentary roll and cheesecake slice. Suggest the twin tower roll and Jungle roll!
(4)Ryan E.
Decided to come here randomly with 2 friends. Did not expect the free roll AND cheesecake! That was a major plus for me. We all ordered rolls and they were very delicious. We were trying to find good sushi and this place has a great selection.
(4)Brandon F.
I am a sushi head. I've eaten it all over the world , and this is some of the best. This is easily the best sushi place in Virginia possibly in the whole East Coast, Excluding New York City. Fish is always fresh, prices Are astoundingly cheap for the quality. The ambience is amazing it's not your generic American sushi house. Try it out!
(5)Jay A.
Yama forever. Free roll every time. Not just an avocado roll, but usually the roll that you were eyeing on the menu. It's a busy spot filled with locals and regulars. Word on the street is that Yama is the best around Virginia Beach. I have yet to try all of the places in Virginia Beach, but I think that I don't want to. Note, the prices are pretty high for sushi in Virginia Beach, but it may be worth it noting the free roll and other surprises in store.
(4)Howard F.
The shumai, sushi and sashimi were good. They were very accommodating of our party of 12 (including 6 kids) and very friendly and polite. The waiter was especially good about checking on what my celiac father (who needs to be gluten-free) could and could not eat. Even gave us some bonus rolls! The specialty rolls at Yama were not so good -- the ingredients might work, but they are smothered in goofy sauce that just kills them.
(3)Molly M.
Terrible service. It took well over 10 minutes to get a drink order. The waitress was nice but not busy, no reason why we never got refills. Took so long we got a free appetizer roll. Once our rolls came they were terrible. I had something that tasted like someone chewed up artificial crab meat and then spit it out onto a piece of sushi. It was hot, slimy and disgusting. I ate once piece and spit it out. My very simple California roll had old brown avocado inside it. Awful. I will never eat here again.
(1)Amber N.
This was my first time dining here. I heard from friends that this was a great place to eat so I wanted to see for myself. I was very pleased with everything! The service is great, the food was fantastic, and they hook you up with lots of freebies. We received a plate of spicy tuna seaweed salad, a Hawaiian roll ( which was very tasty ) and a lovely piece of cheesecake. The dining atmosphere was very nice and I like how all the booths are open ended. I plan on making this my regular neighborhood sushi spot!
(5)Harry A.
Most will tell you that this is their favorite place to get sushi in "Vah Beach". I whole-heartedly agree. I was never big on sushi before coming here, but that was because I never ate authentic sushi. The place is clean, and while popular, I've never had much of an issue getting a place to sit. It can be a bit hectic at peak lunch and dinner hours, but the longest one would wait is about 15 minutes, and it is certainly worth the wait. Service isn't slow and the sushi is served as an art itself. The ingredients are fresh and no matter the order, your food will be very tasty. A good choice is the sushi/sashimi dinners, as you will get a nice mix of various types. A great choice for someone's first time with sushi. I did find it funny that a Japanese restauraunt is owned and operated by Chinese. However its quick to overlook as the prep team knows what they're doing. Don't be suprised to get something on the house. Overall, best choice for sushi in the VA Beach-Norfolk area!
(5)Evelyn L.
Such a great experience!!! Food was delicious!!! I recommend for everyone to try this place!!!
(5)Susan F.
Don't know why it took so long to find this place but after 2 years of looking for some good sushi near the ocean front we are so happy to finally get some. Definitely worth the drive from the north end! The atmosphere, service and food are all top notch! And I would say that even if they did't give us freebies.
(5)Jason L.
Super sushi spot! Inventive rolls, great service. Highly recommend.
(5)JR D.
Excellent sushi restaurant. We all enjoyed our meals and would recommend it to any one. Great hospitality by the staff.
(5)Chris D.
Their specialty rolls are delicious! They usually give a free roll on the house too! Best Sushi in VB
(5)Bonnie H.
I think Yelpers give out 5 stars like candy. My review is for Sushi Bar, I ordered the superman roll and Miso soup. Didn't taste fresh, vegetables were soggy no crunch, my miso soup wasn't hot. The restaurant itself is new and clean so thats a plus. Sad to say I didn't get a piggy bank or a free roll, but even if I did I wouldn't go back.
(2)Takako F.
Contemporary sushi rolls were sooooo good!! I do not recommend to order normal Sushi plates...The Shari (Rice) can be like wax for nomal sushi. People there are super nice and On-House extra plate is always yummy!! And you get the fancy gift, Chopsticks (Hashi) gifts from Yama sushi!! Way over our expectation!! Insite is dark, so no need for makeup!!
(5)Ari C.
Best Sushi in Va Beach, as far as I'm concerned! The place is beautiful, clean, inviting and very accomodating. Love, love, loooove their interior decor. The staff were all friendly even the guys in their cute Kimonos behind the Sushi bar! Everything we've eaten tasted excellent esp. my Spicy Tuna! I would love to go back to this joint again when I'm in town and wishing there's one where I'm from in San Diego! Try it, try it, try it~ is all I can say :)
(5)Cameron T.
If you don't really like Sushi, then this is your place! The staff is nice, but they are Chinese. I'm Chinese....so it's not like I've got anything against Chinese people. I've never had really great sushi made by Chinese people, or Korean people. BUT, I am all about traditional fare. My favorite place in town is Kyushu...owned by Japanese people who make great sushi, and lots of authentic Japanese dishes like udons, and katsus. Some of the rolls are tasty, but totally not authentic. Don't get any of the "tuna" rolls. They were filled with mushy chopped up tuna. The tempura shrimp were good, but the veggies were heavily breaded with a thick batter. The staff is very nice, and they always give you a complimentary roll or two! (which is why I think people really like this place.) Personally, I'd rather spend more and get better tasting food. If you enjoy California rolls, and a lot of the cooked stuff then they have a huge selection of pretty good rolls. However, if you like all the traditional Japanese dishes made the correct way, and raw fish rolls then this is not the place for you.
(2)Richard W.
Above and beyond the best Sushi you will ever have!!! Go there as much as possible.
(5)Ariana O.
This place is absolutely amazing! This is my favorite sushi place in VB. Kind of a hidden location but the interior is gorgeous! Almost always give you a free roll, and everything is really unique but delicious! Chefs are always friendly, just an overall good vibe with DELICIOUS sushi
(5)Andrea G.
A week before I moved to Virginia Beach, while I was still living in New York, I happened to meet a VB local who insisted within 5 minutes of meeting that he had to take me to his favorite sushi place in town. As a native New Yorker who is accustomed to only the freshest sushi, I was skeptical. But true to his word, a week later he took me to Yama. And I was amazed to find that the sushi was fresh, delicious, and REALLY REALLY good. My favorites are the Christmas Tree and the Super Mario roll . . . and they almost always give you a free roll on the house (often the Salad Roll--def my favorite). They have a lot of original rolls the don't have mayo or tempura too. And if you come on the weekend, sometimes you get dessert for free too. This is the only place where I've ever ordered the sushi boat and it was definitely worth it. Who cares if it's not authentic and everyone who works here is actually Chinese? This is by far the best sushi you will find in Virginia Beach.
(5)Leland L.
Terrible! You could not pay me to go back. The place had been highly recommended by several friends, but I wonder what is on their mind. Their prices are ridiculous. For 2 of us, our bill was $95 and we left hungry. Yes there was one free roll that was not what we would order brought to the table of 4. But it was a roll with fried ingredients, which we do not order. The sashimi is very limited. Did not taste that fresh. They try to butter you up with free dollar tree crap, but that does not make up for the fact that their food stinks. Service was terrible. We literally had to stand up and wave the waitress down. No concept of drink refills there. They also do not understand people who want to order their meal in pieces. We don't order sushi all at once. We ordered sashimi and the waitress thought that was all we wanted and never came back for our roll order. We had to track her down. Terrible Terrible Terrible
(1)Chancy C.
This place is perty awesome. I was satisfied with all my orders. It may not be as great as back "home"..in hawaii, but darn good! We would ALWAYS get a free order of sushi and dessert...it'll either be a cheese cake or sliced oranges. It is thee place for those who are damned in "Dam Neck High". Don't forget to snag a few melon candy at the cash register ;)
(4)A F.
This is the best I have ever eaten. I really wish this was the standard for every sushi bar. Almost worth visiting VB for!
(5)Mathew C.
Great suishi and friendly service.
(4)Kimmy C.
So...it's not authentic. Yea...once in awhile I head straight to the bathroom after I get home. But... The service is so great and so are the rolls. I know. I know. Rolls are sooo americanized sushi. But, so is pizza. And, pizza is heaven. I love most of the rolls (maybe with the exception of the rolls with cream cheese in them). For appetizers, I love the bbq squid, agedashi tofu and avocado salad. They always seem to give you free rolls. And, once in awhile, they give you these random gifts like tea cups, chopsticks, piggy banks...It's really the atmosphere that makes this place great.
(4)Farrah A.
we got tons of recommendations for this place. so we tried it out and we were hugely disappointed. the people are nice, the atmosphere is nice. the food was not good, too americanized. we'll never go here again. we're from hawaii, lived in san diego, and visit japan -- so good japanese food is easy for us to gauge but hard to find in virginia beach. pro -- you get a free sushi roll con -- their sushi rolls ordered: pearl & christmas tree roll, pork katsu, tempura. it's hard to mess up pork katsu and tempura, so those were fine. the cucumber salad wasn't that flavorful. the rolls (pearl & christmas tree -- received a candy cane roll free) were terrible. rice was cooked/seasoned wrong. the sauce drenched over the top of the pearl and candy cane roll were much too sweet. the ahi over the christmas tree was terrible, it wasn't seasoned well and the soysauce used was gross. i ended up drenching every roll in wasabi/soysauce just to make it taste better.
(1)Ashley B.
My favorite sushi place in Virginia Beach, and I've been to many of them! The Volcano rolls, Salad Rolls, Spicy Salmon, Dragon roll, etc etc--It's ALL good. The gyoza (meat/pork dumplings) that come with the Lunch Box special ($7.95) are delicious; with the special you get to select two rolls from the lunch box list, two dumplings, salad, miso soup, rice, and cucumber salad. You practically ALWAYS get a free roll when you're there and oranges or some kind of free 'treat' with your check. Service is great & fast!
(5)A G.
I was never into Sushi until I came here. I was around when it was just a sushi bar with about three tables and have been able to watch it expand to the fullsized restaurant it is now. The rolls are outstanding with my favorite being the Spider Man III and the Crazy Stone (which I call the Burrito Roll b/c for some reason I think of a burrito when eating!?!?) The staff is too nice for their own good and everytime I've gone I either get a Salad Roll or Candy Cane roll on the house (it's rumored if you order over $15.00, you get a free roll).
(5)Meri B.
Me and the ladies in my "girlie dinner" group had a really nice time here. The service was okay; the waitress got some drink orders messed up and it wasn't super fast, but not enough to lessen the dining experience. Everyone loved their food. The free rolls were yummy, as was the complimentary cheesecake for dessert! Can't beat that.
(4)Dave S.
Good sushi and friendly staff. Dining area is a little small so waiting can take awhile on weekends. would recommend going on weekday.
(4)Brittany R.
I absolutely love Yama. My family frequents here at least once a month. My family is originally from NYC and when it comes to sushi we always go all out. We usually get two wooden bridges covered in sushi. I love their rolls, just thinking about it makes my mouth water. The salad, candy cane, christmas tree, spiderman and volcano are some of my favorites. This place has grown since we first started coming here. I heard they are going to open some new locations. The service is great; fast, precise and comes to you with a smile. Whenever we go they always bring out some extra rolls, sake and dessert on the house.
(5)Amanda H.
My favorite sushi in Virginia Beach!!! I often come here for takeout because it's right around the corner from my house and the sushi is always fantastic. I am writing this review though because of the amazing experience I had here with my family for dinner. They were visiting from out of town and are huge sushi fans and I recommended this place because the sushi is well-priced and delicious and the staff is so kind and friendly. What I apparently forgot to mention is that it isn't a divey, cheap sushi place--the atmosphere is nice and it's a great place to go and hang out. We ordered the goyza for an appetizer and it was the best any of us had ever had so we ordered another. Then we ordered 6 sushi rolls to share (spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, Yama house roll, dream roll, crazy volcano and candy cane)....when they came out our waitress also brought a salad roll on the house. We all agreed that these rolls were some of the best EVER and while we chowed down our waitress brought us a roll she said was her favorite (ocean roll?) and it was awesome. We just kept oohing and ahing over the flavor and quality and once we managed to stuff ourselves full of every last piece, our waitress brought us a complimentary piece of cheesecake that was divine. We just kept being surprised with the level of service and quality of food. When we got our check, the waitress brought out a cute pair of flip flops for my sister and a pretty vase to take home as well. So the "goodies" were great, but just added to the charm and experience--without them, this is still probably the best sushi place in va beach!
(5)Steven S.
YAMA IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I have been there numerous times and it is always a great experience. Every single person I have taken there is now a loyal Yama fan. I travel a lot and often eat sushi, but I am still yet to find anything as delicious as the Candy Cane Roll at Yama. Also they always bring out a roll "on the house" which makes you feel nice. I definitely recommend this place and whenever I am in town next I will be seeing you!
(5)Ashley S.
I loved the booths at this restaurant. As my friends and I were there, the ladies pulled a couple booths together for large party and it looked like they were happy to do it. My Dragon Roll was fantastic and the Spicy California roll we shared had just the right amount of heat. Our rolls were large and reasonably priced as the other reviewers have said, but I thought that the service was kind of slow. All in all, I would go again as it was cosy and friendly and well-priced! Bon apetit!
(4)Bianca M.
I've been here two or three times. The sushi was okay and it was nice if them to give out free rolls. Once I was treating a boyfriend and we ordered over $50 worth of food. I guess our waitress assumed he was paying. The waitress brought a free dessert to the table and set it in front of him and told him it was for him. That was very rude and guess what? I didn't leave her a nice tip and I haven't been back since.
(1)Jr U.
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! I've been travelling back and forth to VA Beach for about a year now and EVERY TIME I go, I HAVE to eat at Yama. I've tried almost every single specialty sushi they have. And every single one is superb! The service is THE BEST. They usually give free rolls and desert if you have a big group or order a lot. The staff are really friendly. If you're looking for a great place that has great service, and has great sushi, go to Yama!
(5)Will M.
I don't care who run's the kitchen Black, White, Canadian, Yama is awesome! The rolls are well thought out and prepared, and above all delicious! Yes the waitresses are slightly lost but it's cool, bring a friend to pass the time until you get your order or drink a beer and be cool, the food is coming! If you act right they might throw in a Volcano roll on the house. All in all if you want some good sushi and are in the Va. Beach area hit up Yama you will not be disappointed.
(4)Micah P.
The sushi here is pretty good. The place can get really busy, but they are pretty quick with their service which is both a good and bad thing. The good: you get your food quicker and the bad: you feel a little rushed.
(4)Mo B.
Hidden behind a Wendy's in an obscure strip mall is Yama Sushi Bar, the best in Virginia Beach. It is a small, cozy restaurant that can sometimes pose an issue for seating, but since it's tucked away, it's only a twenty minute wait maximum and completely worth it. The walls are painted a glowing orange that immediately envelopes you as you settle into your booth. The waitresses and sushi masters are all extremely friendly and attentive. For drinks, I always get the traditional Japanese green tea and a bottle of the Kikkoman plum wine. This wine is absolutely amazing. I always look for it at the store, but haven't had any luck elsewhere. I suppose it just makes Yama that much more special. The complementary cucumber salad tantalizes your taste buds and distracts your grumbling tummy long enough for the Miso soup to arrive. Yama's miso is phenomenal as well, but also just a tease for the main event. The sushi specials are always affordable, but I always go for the bento boxes. Complete with vegetable tempura, cucumber rolls, salad and rice, it's the best deal, especially at lunch time. Their spicy tuna rolls and salad rolls are raved about as well. By the end of the night, when the bottle of wine is finished and the plates are clean even though you wanted to save some to take to go, Yama will be on your top list as well.
(5)Carnelia G.
Once upon a time, you used to have to search high and low for sushi in Virginia Beach. Nowadays you can't swing a dead salmon without hitting a decent sushi place. Yama is one of those new sushi places and it's really good. On the level of Fusha Lounge, Yama is a nice environment and tasty fresh sushi for a reasonable price. I especially recommend the Volcano Rolls. Yama puts a new spicier twist on this classic roll.
(5)Latisha M.
Very good sushi! Lots of different varieties available. Everything tastes so fresh too. The staff is super friendly and attentive. I really liked this place and will be going back!
(4)Pauline W.
First of all, I had been coming to Yama's since the day they opened their doors about 10 yrs ago and the were this itty bitty sushi bar that was top notch. Since they've expanded several times already, it seemed like the quality of the food has gone down over the years and the frequent switch out of waitresses is like a revolving door. I think their sushi has suffered greatly in order to accommodate a larger clientele and so it's now mostly about quantity and not quality like it used to be. They still offer the free roll and dessert, which I believe is the appeal for most customers, but not even that could get me to come back. Their spicy tuna roll used to be my all-time favorite and now its texture is mainly mush, almost like baby food and the crunch they used to have on it is either no longer there or the sushi has been sitting for too long and the crunch has softened. It's sad to write this review because I remember what it used to be like, but come if you want so-so, inexpensive sushi, free rolls and dessert, it's not the worst in VB for sure, but it's no longer the best.
(2)Jacob S.
Very good. They give you a free house roll too.
(4)Robyn R.
very good!! we got a free roll and a slice of cheesecake for dessert. The sunset roll and the yuma is really good!! would definitely reccomend this place.
(5)Jessica S.
The best sushi place in Virginia Beach, hands down! Always great sushi, reasonable prices and amazing service. They almost always give a free roll and sliced oranges for dessert. No other place in Va Beach can compare.
(5)Ka Yan Y.
First of all, this is a japanese restaurant run by chinese. This is nt a problem by itself, but most of the time, they just dun get the spirit of japanese cuisine, they dun get japanese food is meant to be delicate, not rough... The miso soup did nt taste right, its with chinese spices and the difference is quite obvious if u have had real jap food, also the tofu inside were powderly, its nt even tofu, it melt.... with the cucumber appetizer, they RECYCLE¡! Since my boyfd n I did nt eat it, they just put it back n used that to serve the next customer, that's just nt acceptable,,,, We were already fed up with the place before the lunch bento box even came, well, the bento box didn't change anything, with the chicken katsu, the breaded part is nt attatched to the chicken n the breaded part is almost thicker than the chicken, the salad sauce was watery, the rice was nt even jap rice, its chinese,,,, overall its just disappointing,,, I dun kn if that is the best virginia beach has cuz I m nt from here, but certainly is bad compared to sushi I hv had anywhere else in the states,,, nt to mention the waitress speak english with a strong accent and they yell across the restaurant with chinese dialouge, it just was nt pleasant If I hv one more chance to choose where I want to hv my last lunch in virginia beach after a beautiful vacation, I would nt choose yama sushi....
(2)Nick C.
This is a great sushi bar. It's no where near where we live but we still frequent this place. The service is always great, the sushi comes in generous portions and the specials are very creative. On many occasions, we have been treated to a free dessert or appetizer. We don't go enough to be known there or to be called "regulars" but the staff is just so friendly, they want to leave you with a good impression. This place is generally busy when we go. Not the type of busy where you can't get a table and the service is slow, but the type of busy where you know it's a great place because people are always there.
(5)Molly T.
Um, this is the only place that when my friends and I go- we uh, run straight to the bathroom after. Sushi is tasty, but it's always drenched in mayo like sauces. Usually crowded and service is a little slow- but they will give you a free roll or dessert when that happens. Good for sake nights. And I still go when invited- I'm just picky on what I get.
(3)C M.
The service is friendly, the menu is great, and the prices aren't too bad. They're usually quite packed but if you call ahead you should be fine. They usually give out a roll "on the house" while you're waiting. Their specialty rolls are to die for, especially the "Ocean Roll." After going to many of the other local sushi bars in the area we've finally found the right one. Now, this is the only place we go when we want to have sushi. The rest of the places pale in comparison.
(5)Yum E.
I went there and I wasn't too impressed. The menu was limited IMO and I had a hard time choosing something I wanted. I agree with cameron t. about the rolls. If you like cooked rolls, it's good place to go. If you want good sushi (raw fish), not so great. Overall, I've experienced better.
(2)Mary Beth M.
This is the ONLY sushi place I go to in Virginia Beach, and it's the best I've ever had in general. The waitresses are so nice, as is the owner and other chefs. The sushi always has a delicious flavor, and they give you a lot of food for a great price! (Lunch box special). Best sushi at the beach.
(5)
