Just look at the 5 Stars, that says it all. Great food and service. Our new place for seafood - Chef Charles keep it up you have a good thing going with your food and staff. Well done.

The service was good, food even better. At first I thought the portions were a little small, but that was misleading. I left feeling stuffed. Got a chance to talk with the chef and owner and he was extremely nice and being a Johnson and Whales grad like myself knows exactly what he's doing. It shows in his restaurant. I wish him the best of luck, but I don't think he needs the luck. It's a great place.

I had a great meal last week tuna special with lots of great taste. different types of vegetables .

Blue Seafood & Spirits is a delightful addition to the Red Mill area. Our dinner there was simply A+, as fresh as can be and skillfully prepared. We will definitely be back and recommend it highly.

Atmosphere is awesome! Food is amazing! Great wine list, and they serve Pepsi products my favorite! Will come back for sure.

Wow! This is my new favorite place. The service and food were outstanding. We got there at 5:30 and were sat immediately. the pineapple mojito was tasty and perfectly mixed. The calamari was ok, a little forgettable compared to everything else. The chefs complimentary crab salad taster was awesome (please put this on the menu permanently). SWEET POTATO Biscuit deserves all caps it was awesome with some kind of sweet fruit butter and I am already craving it again. The seafood sampler with mahi and broiled crab cake was perfectly cooked it wasn't even slightly fishy. The steak Diane was fork tender. Last but not least the chocolate bread pudding was a perfect finale to a wonderful dinner. This place is a gem and I can't wait to come back!

We decided to try this restaurant during our vacation based mainly off the favorable reviews it had received previously from yelp and trip advisor. Boy did it live up to its reputation. First I called ahead to check with manager about whether it was kid friendly and whether casual dress was appropriate. When I called ahead for info I actually spoke with the owner/chef who was very friendly and explained to me even though they don't have a kids "menu" per se there were things for kids (4 & 6) to eat such as chicken fingers and French fries. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a well dressed hostess who immediately showed us to our table. Next we were promptly greeted by Derek our waiter who was very friendly and knowledgable about the menu. After ordering, before our meal arrived we were surprised by a complimentary shrimp appetizer and excellent little biscuits with honey butter. My wife and I both had the seafood belle haven which was absolutely delicious and the right size portion. After dinner we were personally greeted by the chef/owner about our experience and had a short conversation about the restaurant. Overall we were very happy with the experience and would definitely dine here again next time we are in the area. Thanks you Chef Charles for an excellent meal on our vacation.

Great service and amazing seafood. We were with a large group and had several entrees on the menu all of which resulted in clean plates. The sweet potato biscuits were amazing as well. I would highly recommend the crab cakes and flash fried oysters, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu.

I've been here twice. This place has absolutely incredible food. I am not usually a big seafood guy, unless I am cooking it myself. I usually get the "lightly" fried shrimp, and that's exactly what it is. Horseradish cream sauce to dip. Crab soup is delicious, with generous portions of meat. Staff and owner are owner are very friendly and accomodating. You're absolutely nuts if you think this place is anything under 10 stars.
(5)Joshua F.
We had a big group (10) and this place handled it well. A few small goofs amounted to little, as they were hidden by wonderful service, great food, and one of the best atmospheres one can hope for in a strip mall. Chef is actively involved and makes everyone feel special. Great with kids, too. Don't miss this place. Highly recommend the calamari, oysters, and carb soup. We've not seen anything close to this place in the area.

Great service. Great chef. Hours de overs are given before the meal. Husband said crab cakes were the the best he had. Fried shrimp was awesome. Filet was thinly sliced and was great too. Come early this place has been discovered.

WOW. If you are wondering how this place has so many reviews and is still holding onto the full 5 stars-- stop wondering... the best seafood ever! We were vacationing at VA Beach and took the ~20 min ride from the strip to hit this place and boy were we HAPPY about that decision. We did our research and saw that Blue does not take reservations, so we got there early. Glad we did because by the time we left, every table was full. Since it was still happy hour when we got there, the hostess asked us if we'd like to sit at the bar to take advantage of the happy specials... another score, especially since everything we really wanted (shrimp and crab cakes) were on special that day! $6 crab cakes, $2 each tempura shrimp, $5 microbrews and house wine. Can't beat that! We also ordered some of the best calamari I've ever had. ALL the food was uber fresh. The shrimp was out of this world. We thought about ordering more, but refrained ourselves and saved room for creme brulee-- which was delicious (wish the top was a tiny bit crispier when I cracked it with my spoon- but it was still sooo good). The chef/owner made it a point to visit us and the other customers to check in-- a gesture that is very much appreciated. We got to know him a little bit and he sent over some other goodies that we got to try on the house. Now that's service. We will 100% return to Blue the next time we vacation in VA Beach and have already told many friends and fam to try this restaurant ASAP!

Decided to take my gf out for a dinner date on a Friday night. Showed up around 8pm and the placed was almost full. So we decided to just sit at the bar and the bartender's name was Derek. He was a really welcoming guy and knows how to treat people well. First off...we got a complimentary sweet potato biscuit with some whipped butter. Tasted amazing to me but not to my GF (doesn't like sweet potato). Then we also got complimentary shrimp on a cracker with some type of sauce...it was delicious! For entrees I've ordered the Fried Seafood Sampler and she ordered the stuffed salmon. Both dishes were amazing. The service was quick for an almost full restaurant on a Friday Night and our Bartender made sure we didn't run out of drinks. The environment is nice and has Multiple TV's that play scenes of the ocean underwater showing animals. I would definitely recommend this place to people who a looking for an upscale seafood place with an average price for entrees around $20
(5)Carey F.
I loved this place! It's exactly what I look for in a restaurant...local ingredients, chef prepared dishes and great drinks! The food was fresh and well prepared and seasoned perfectly. I had the pork chop which was absolutely delicious. I only wish I'd had room for dessert!!!
(5)Jay Rand B.
Very good dining option in the Virginia Beach area. The service is fantastic here. The food was well presented and flavorful. Appetizers were quite well done. Entree choices were plentiful and varied. Dessert options were limited but well done and made on site. No "wow" factor here but compared to most of the other options on or near the beach, this place is near a 5!

Last week while on vacation at Virginia Beach, my family and I were looking for an upscale seafood place to have a nice gourmet meal. Along our journey, we came across Blue Seafood and Spirits. Located roughly 10 minutes away from the strip, the restaurant appeared to be a small, unassuming establishment that was located in a strip mall. How did my dining experience go? To find out, read below. The Good: Service- The restaurant officially opened at 4:00pm, but my family and I were standing outside around 3:45pm. One of the employees saw us standing outside and opened the doors about 5 minutes earlier than advertised. We were immediately seated. The server that attended our table was very knowledgeable of the menu, answered every question with certainty and conviction and refilled our drinks without being asked. The food itself came out in a reasonable amount of time and was piping hot when it hit our table. Concept/Décor- With a name like Blue Seafood, I expected there to be some blue running through the restaurant, but the concept and décor was amazing. The backlight in the bar area was a light blue, the table napkins were a darker blue. On the walls were flat screen TV's that showed different marine animals that were swimming in a true blue ocean. Menu Selection- Unfortunately I have a shellfish allergy and most of the items featured some form of shellfish. But for those that didn't want shellfish, the restaurant offered regular fish, chicken, pork chop, steak and chicken fingers. There were also a number of items to choose from which was amazing. Taste of Food- I ordered the Pork Chop with Mashed Potatoes and Veggies. The pork chop was very tender and moist. The mashed potatoes were real and seasoned perfectly. The veggies were also cooked and seasoned nicely. The Not So Good: Prices- My Pork Chop dish was $18.99 and that was one of the cheaper dishes on the menu. The most expensive that I observed was the Fried Seafood Combination which was $25.99. Given my frugal nature, these prices were a little too high for my blood. Seasoning of Pork Chop- While the pork chop was hot, juicy and tender, there was also a tad bit of saltiness. It wasn't too salty, but the salt level was very noticeable. Overall- Amid a few hiccups, the restaurant has great service, a great concept, cooks fresh food and successfully earns its title of being a more upscale eating establishment. I would definitely go back again when I am in town and recommend others to try this restaurant out as well. FIVE STARS.

Fresh food, quick service, great tasting food and the prices are fare. The seafood is local, and fresh along with the vegetables. The management is friendly and so is the staff. The Chef takes time out of his nights and brings over complimentary hors d'oeuvres and later on in the evening asks you how everything was. We were welcomed right at the door, the setting was romantic and I liked the feeling of being "underwater." The restaurant had TVs with sea life on it throughout the night. This restaurant is smaller than most, but it gives you better one on one service with the staff and quicker service. We were in and out within an hour and did not have to spend all Friday night waiting on food. Definitely a go to spot, and it may become a regular spot at that!

This is a wonderful place from people to product. It has a limited seating capacity which makes you feel like you are eating on someone's dining room, there is that homely touch. I think the seating is limited to 60. The ambiance is good, tables are organized nicely. They do not take reservations. Once we walked in we were greeted by the hostess, who was really friendly and very open. There is a small bar with seating area, we did not seat there as the wait time was only 15 mins. There are several TV monitors playing videos of fish swimming in blue ocean. Very relaxing. Our server was very friendly who served the food with a smile on her face. Once seated we were offered complementary which I believe a variation of shrimp tarragon, delicious. We ordered calamari which was served promptly, it was excellent. The appetizer was so good, we ordered another appetizer that they accommodated promptly - fried oysters which was also fantastic. One of us ordered a crab soup that was also very good. Our main courses were - fried shrimp, corvina which was prepared with spinach on top and with a white sauce, belle haven (shrimp, scallop and crabmeat baked with a sauce), crab cake. All of them were excellent, prepared to perfection. For four of us the total bill was $130. I also had a beer (they have a decent collection of wines and beers), and one of us had sprite. I would like to come here - again.

I definitely don't give out 5 stars too often but this place deserves it!!! We decided last minute to eat out bc we wanted seafood and it would be too late when we got home to get everything done...so to Yelp I went! The restaurant is a short drive from Virginia Beach, small (so get there early or make reservations if they do them). We got there about 4:30, which proved to be a perfect time! A few tables were filled, but by the time we left (5:30-6) the place was packed!! Our waiter was just awesome, I missed his name (black guy also working behind the bar) super friendly, just lovely all around! I ordered a cup of the crab soup, which was tasty, only thing I would change is keeping the crab in lumps (that's how I make my soup, crab flavor is better that way), hubby had a side caesar which was tasty as well! I ordered the seafood Oscar (?) salmon, lump crab, asparagus with a hollandaise sauce, fresh veggies & Asiago mashed potatoes. Very well prepared, only thing I would change if this was my meal is a bit less sauce & not so smooth taters...(I like the lumps). Hubby had the Belle Haven, which was crab, scallops and I believe some other seafood. It was baked with cheese on top! He loved it, said maybe less butter, but he still loved it!!! The chef came out several times to see how meals were progressing which I thought was a nice, caring touch. We even got some free tasters, shrimp canapés and sweet potato biscuits with a peach (?) butter. We will definitely be back!! Thank you for a great meal!

During vacation in Virginia Beach my wife's family decided that we wanted an upscale seafood restaurant, and we decided to come here due to their 5-star rating. Everything was what we expected it to be. I had the only steak item on their menu, and although it wasn't piping hot - I suspect because it had to wait for the rest of everyone's food to be ready - it was wonderful. The waiters are very attentive and prompt and exhibited good knowledge of the food.

I have been passing by this place noticing a crowd standing outside. I thought it's always busy and I'm not one to stand in a line that long, so I passed by, time and again. Tonight I turned to yelp for an after 9pm venture in VB. There aren't too many good restaurants that stay open past 10 pm and I hate going into a place last minute. I've been made to feel like "I was the reason the employees couldn't go home early or when they wanted to, because I came in the door last minute, and I HATE being rushed or ignored when I'm paying for a meal and service. We had actually chosen Blue, but given the listing as closing at 9:30 we were hesitant choosing them as it was now 9:25. We were almost out the door and I ran back to the computer and dialed up their number, hoping the closing time listed was wrong as it is a Friday night. A girl answered and I doubled checked there closing time and she verified 9:30, then she said "but there are still a lot of people here so come on and we will be expecting you." I said "are you sure?". so we headed there and as soon as we entered the front door, Tonya greeted us and asked "if we were the ones that called?" Yes we were. She said come right this way, but we asked to sit at the bar. She said we could sit anywhere we'd like. I asked her what was good there as this was our first visit. She suggested to start with the calamari, then one of the nights specials lump crab/butterfly shrimp dish. The bar tender Tina welcomed us and commenced to inform us of their specials and take our drink order. With several suggestions, we ordered a bowl of she crab soup to start. While waiting, and enjoying our beverages, the owner/chef Charles came up behind us speaking to us as if we were family, brought us sample taste of his ceviche. Tina asked if we would like to taste the calamari (which she had suggested as a starter), and she brought us a sample. It was so delicious we ordered it and in a short time it arrived. our selected entrees were the lump crab/ shrimp dish and a barrel fish dish with choice of sides (we got mashed potatoes and vegetable medley/sweet potato/vegetable medley) and it also included sweet potato biscuits with apricot butter. OMG. I could've eaten a plate of those. Everything was top notch and the staff was more than accommodating. We were made to feel so welcomed and the food was an experience. We never got the She Crab soup, but i'm not sure if I would've been able to eat any more. Next time...

One of my all time favorite movies is the Kevin Costner classic " Field of Dreams". Chef Charles has built and developed arguably the best seafood restaurant in Virginia Beach, some would say on the Southside and others may go further to even say Hampton Roads. Blue's location is not as desirable as say the Ocean Front. But as in the movie "Field of Dreams" build it and they will come...even if it is almost in Pungo, LOL! The crowds have indeed come and Blue has developed a cult following among seafood Aficionados. It hold the ONLY 5 star seafood dining rating in our area. I first checked out Blue when they first opened over a year ago. It was terrific then and I can vouch after tonight's service that it's even better. They have found the perfect chemistry of challenging to find seafood, exemplary kitchen staff and a knowledgeable wait staff. They really are hitting on all cylinders. Exterior of the restaurant is quaint with clean lines. Symmetrical windows and blue benches adorn the front of this simple store front bistro. The sign when lit up is two shades of Blue and really cool. The area was clean and presented well. Upon entering I was quickly met by wait staff who said I could take a seat where I like. At around 6:45 PM on a weekday they were around half full. The 15 stool bar had only a few customers and filled in more as I ate. Tile floors run throughout the smallish dining room. Wood tables combine with white cushion and wood chairs center Booths running at the left perimeter. Five flat screens display sea life. If lucky enough you can snag the circular booth in the front. I really liked how the place emitted a casual vibe and fun atmosphere. My waitress Tonia greeted me and went through the specials. I decided on the impossible to find on a menu in our area Lemon Buttered oven poached Monk fish with side of Eastern Shore Sweet potato and vegetable medley. I also asked for a wine pairing with my meal and was provided a sample of a Nero D Auda which was lite and scrumptious, I ordered up and kudos to Tonia. Chef Charles himself presented a House Smoked Black Tipped Shark with a lump of Caviar served on a a piece of toast. I informed the chef that I first tired them out in there opening weeks. It's been a long time since I had Cavaier and it was a extraordinary. Several minutes later Tonia came out with two small sweet potato biscuits with Apricot butter. They were melt in my mouth and two did not seem like nearly enough. An unexpected surprise hit my table when Chef Charles brought over a plate of Tempra Fried Shrimp with Horseradish sauce compliments of the house for my return visit. Huge, crispy and so delicious dunked in the sauce. Less than 25 minutes into my service my meal was delivered at the table. The fish was sizzling in the lemon butter. I started on the veggies and sweet potatoes first and both were very good. After allowing my fish to cool a few minutes I cut into the huge pieces of white fish. This was my first time trying Monk and it was a light tender fish cooked excellent. My taste buds did a dance every time I took a bite, it was marvelous. Tonia checked up on my and kept my water filled. I told her that this was an awesome dish and she said that she would let the chef know. I enjoyed not only my meal, but the company of regulars Cathy and Lee who were seated beside me. They too enjoyed the Monk. Surprisingly I found out that Lee also resides in the Bayside area, so a hike for him too, but worth it. The chef made his way around the restaurant checking on how everyone was doing. He stopped and talked to our area and I learned that he has been in the restaurant business for over 20 years and is very passionate about conservation of not only seafood, but wildlife. He jokingly shared that he raised chickens when on the Shore. He has been executive several places, most recently at Norfolk Yacht. He and his wife both run Blue together. Before departing I splurged on a Chocolate Bread Pudding with Crown Royal Creme and house coffee. This is the chef's specialty desert and it did not disappoint. One of the better deserts that I can recall having at the beach. The house coffee was brewed to perfection and paired nicely with the rich chocolate. The tab ran North of $45 for a solo meal. Not cheap, but I will always pay for quality. The awesome reviews of Blue are not by chance, they offer something unique others do not. Fresh and when possible local seafood you cannot always find in our area. Chef Charles is like a dynamo whisking around the dining room. He not only checked in on all of his customers, but he also assisted the wait staff in clearing tables. From the time I came in until I left I saw him totally focused on all facets of his business. His passion for owning, managing and thrusting himself to the front of his operation has paid off. Try for yourself and don't be surprised if you don't find yourself writing them a 5 star and telling all your friends.

I really enjoyed my dinner at Blue. Walking into the small restaurant we were warmly greeted and felt very welcomed. The chairs were actually comfortable and made you want to linger over your dinner! I ordered the tempora shrimp. They were huge and lightly breaded and fried to perfection! A creamy horseradish sauce accompanied them.A sweet potato and julienned mixed vegetables were the sides. I had to get dessert because they were serving my favorite---creme burlee. It was very good, smooth and creamy. I wish the sugar was caramelized a bit more but the flavor and texture were spot on.

Got to love Yelp! I was introduced to this place by Yelp, and am sure happy I know about it. This will give reason to drive over yonder. Food: The restaurant provided samples for the event that I attended. Unfortunately, I did not come with a paper and pen to note down everything that Chef Charles mentioned, but I caught plenty. Everything that is cooked is fresh, they bring it in, and everything is local - either fished or purchased locally. The fresh flavor is there, and it's on point. All the flavors and the obvious love is put in the food that is prepared. I am not a fan of tempura, but the shrimp tempura that was provided as a sample was extremely good. I am happy to say, this might be the first shrimp tempura I have tried in a restaurant that I like - and I probably would've never tried if it wasn't for this event. The food is prepared in a very creative way, where everything that is put together fits. Ambience: The place is great, and I felt like I came in to live a full underwater experience. The place is decorated with several TVs that play underwater videos displaying marine life. It is very soothing. The seating was comfortable and the place did not feel crowded. Service: Chef Charles spoke about his passion for fishing, and cooking. His speech definitely showed that he's a shift that is about quality and not quantity. He shows great love to the craft of cooking, and the quality of the food. The people in the restaurant have long standing relationships, and it flows really well. Everybody was really nice, and if you go, strike up a conversation, there's good things to hear. Now it's time to go back for a full meal!

Sat at the bar during happy hour and it's everything everyone says. Food was fresh and delicious. The chef got some Barrel Fish in and let me try some - it was really succulent and delicious. Also took advantage of some really good HH deals: $5 microbrews $6 crab cakes $2 tempura shrimp Crab cakes were delicious. Shrimp was great. Calamari was some of the best I've ever had. We will return on our next visit.

This place is incredible! I have found my new seafood place. I can see there is one fake review here from the known HR troll who obviously has never been here. Well let me say that is way off. That was very nice of the owner to address it but not necessary in my view. I am in love with the crab cakes here because they are just to die for. I had to go off of my vegetarian diet for a day for this! Fair prices too. Definitely going to start coming here more often. These reviews do not lie! If you have never been, you must go now. It's my 150th review so it had to be something special. So glad I heard about this place through the grapevine.

There is none Better. This is Virginia Beach's FINEST Restaurant! See more Reviews including mine on TripAdviser.com . The place is considerably snd purposely Small so that Chef Charles puts out Food that Rocks!! Whether you come early or late, you can expect to be treated as the most valuable customer. The Restaurant soared to Five Stars and Stays There due to the awesome, individualized plates that tantalize the palette. Please note, you may have a 45 minute wait and they do not take reservations, BUT you quickly forget the wait after you are seated and become the focus and Chef Charles prepares your 5-Star Dining Experience. My personal favorite is the Award Winning Crab Cake. Salute to you Chef Charles! We will see you soon.

Oh, my. Where to begin? This place was awesome! As an avid yelper, when I am looking for new restaurants to try, I turn to yelp first. My mom either takes us out or cooks for us [her kids] every year on our birthdays, and this year was no exception. This was the restaurant I chose for my 31st (It was a milestone for me this year because I lived to see it at all! I almost died seven months ago, but by the grace of God, I didn't.) I stood outside the front door to look at the menu, and a hostess opened the door for me and asked me if I was ready to be seated. I followed her inside and was seated promptly. She and the servers [a server and a trainee] were very friendly. The service was excellent as well. When I asked about the gluten free options, the server[s] let me know that almost anything on the menu could be made gluten free, and then they listed the exceptions to that. I asked about substitutions on the menu and they said they didn't know but would find out. The chef himself came out to speak to us about it and let us know that he would make any of the substitutions we requested without any additional charge, and he brought us an absolutely AMAZING, DELICIOUS shrimp appetizer. He was very friendly and jovial, making light conversation while he was at our table. The food was excellent, everything was cooked perfectly. I was impressed that it was also local. The restaurant was clean and the ambiance was nice. My husband is Filipino and we both love seafood, and have eaten at many seafood places over the years, including many in this area. This was by far the best in this area, and probably in my top three of all time. I will definitely be coming back, and recommending it to anyone who needs a good place to eat fresh food.

I really wanted to go to Blue Seafood and Spirits after researching restaurants in the Virginia Beach area. After dining there, I would give the restaurant six stars if I could. Everyone was super friendly, from the waitress to the chef. The chef was extremely nice. He brought out complimentary hors douevres for us- shark salad on toasted bread, which was delicious. He was also constantly in the restaurant floor asking how the meals were and conversing with patrons, which was a really nice touch. The food was fantastic. Along with the shark salad, we also got complimentary biscuits with apricot butter, which were extremely tasty. For our entrees, I got the seafood belle haven which was scallops, crab, and shrimp with melted cheese on top and mashed potatoes and veggies on the side. It was absolutely scrumptious. My boyfriend got the tuna steak, which he said was very fresh and cooked to perfection. We also got the chocolate bread pudding for desert which melted in your mouth. I would wholeheartedly recommend coming here for dinner if you're in the area. I will definitely be back if I'm in Virginia Beach again.

The best seafood I've had in ages! Is a small place but great servers and top notch seafood. Totally worth waiting for a seat.

This was a pleasant surprise! My daughter wanted to celebrate her birthday here based on all of the Yelp reviews. I have to say that the service and food is about as good as it gets in this area (obviously this applies only to the restaurants of which I have been a patron). When my youngest daughter and I arrived, our party was already seated. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly. The ambiance was very good; however, we arrived for a late dinner and it did get a little noisy during our meal. The server(s) (one was a trainee) were available at all times and kept the drinks refilled. The glasses never ran dry. They were able to answer all of our questions. The chef/owner came out and greeted us and made sure that we were being catered to and answered questions we had about replacements for certain items in the dish of which they did. Surprisingly most of their dishes are prepared from local sourced foods and cooked fresh...nothing prepared. Before our dishes arrived, we were presented with an appetizer (mouth-watering, delicious!) and then a plate with small sweet potato biscuits and I believe it was apricot butter. We should have saved the biscuits for dessert. They were THAT good! Next the salads came out and our then the entree. Everything was appropriately portioned. I ordered the Seafood Belle Haven with mixed vegetables and a sweet potato which was divine. Everything was seasoned perfectly. I would not recommend the sweet tea. We ordered sweet tea and at first the server brought tea to the table and my daughter said it was too sweet. When I ordered sweet tea I was told they didn't have sweet tea but they would bring me simple syrup or something else that I can't remember (perhaps plain sugar?). In any event, they did sweeten it before bringing it out and you could see the simple syrup at the bottom and it was way too sweet. I don't drink unsweetened tea and don't care for sugar in tea once it's cold because it doesn't dissolve properly. I don't drink soda or alcohol so for me, it will be water next and yes, there will be a next time!

This place is top notch. The food is excellent, the drinks wonderful, and the service is superb. My husband and I honeymooned here in va beach and we made this place our splurge. We had dinner at the bar (recommended) and the bartender, Derek, was a show in and of himeself and was a great server. We were able to ask for certain elements in our drinks and he delivered everytime. The food was wonderful and the prices reasonable for seafood. The chief came out to check on everything and was fun to converse with. The bathrooms were clean and the music was great too. Overall, the place was fantastic and can scarey be recommended enough.

Outstanding seafood. Great service. The best I've been to in the Virginia beach area
(5)Dan G.
The food and service are incredible. This was by far my best restaurant experience in VA Beach. I had the seafood Belle Haven. It was delicious. Very friendly staff. Beautiful place as well. Just a great experience.
(5)Steffany C.
Amazing, the bread and butter was fantastic, crab cake was perfect. Flounder cooked to perfection. Staff is friendly, the owner came out and asked me, by name, how my dinner was. Definitely recommend, I'll miss this place!
(5)Josh V.
Overall this place has fantastic food with friendly service and all at a reasonable price. I decided to take my wife for a pre Valentine's Day dinner since I knew the actual Valentine's Day would be super packed. We arrived at 730 and the place was filled to capacity. The restaurant itself isn't that big and if I had to eyeball it, it probably holds 70 people max. We were told it was a 30 minute wait but luckily it wasn't that long. Not too long after being seated, the chef greeted us and gave us complimentary gulf shrimp as an hors d'oeuvre. It was very delicious. Wife had a pineapple mojito which she said was more minty than pineapple. For appetizer I had the crab soup after reading many good things about it and I was not disappointed. It is full of flavor and if I tasted correctly it had a tomato base sauce which was an excellent pairing with the crab. My only complaint was that it was not as warm as I would've liked. It almost seemed like I got the last of the batch. My wife had a half dozen raw oysters. She said they were top notch in freshness, cleanliness and taste. Out of 5 she said they were definitely a 5 and trust me, my wife knows her oysters. For the main course I had the crab cakes since it was their signature dish and I have to say that they were excellent. Broiled to perfection and not over seasoned. Did not have one bit of shell in it. With a squeeze of lemon and the accompanying tartar sauce it was a perfect bite. The mashed potatoes were also delicious but not mind blowing, and the vegetables were just meh. The crab cakes were definitely the star of the plate. My wife got the fried seafood platter and according to her everything was really delicious. She gave it a 4 out of 5. For dessert we had the chocolate bread pudding which was their signature dessert. I was disappointed it didn't come with ice cream since that's how I like to eat my bread pudding but it definitely did not need it. The cream and blueberries were cold so it balanced out the warm bread pudding nicely. And the taste was absolutely delicious. I love bread pudding and this is definitely one of the tops. Some other notes is that the chef visited is a total of 3 times throughout our evening to make sure everything was ok. I thought that was a nice touch and it's nice when the workers (especially the chef) is appreciative of their patrons. The only slightly negative points were that the tables are very close together. I feel like I can hear everyone's conversations and they can hear mine. Also our waitress forgot our waters and cocktail sauce even after we asked her twice for them. She was very friendly though and we all make mistakes so no big deal. Finally, the bathroom is in a weird place. You have to walk through all the servers because it's behind their servers station so be prepared to dodge waiters. Despite the minor flaws, the food and friendliness more than make up for it and I really wouldn't mind coming here again!

I'm in heaven, I get carried away... It may not be by the water, and instead of an ocean view you have a view of the parking lot, but I'll tell you this is the best seafood restaurant I've been to in this city in a long long time. The chef comes out with amuse-bouche to thrill "our" palates before our meal arrives. Ahhh. Amazing, local, fresh. I'd swear there's a fishing boat outside delivering the fresh catch everyday. And the bar, don't get me started, I feel like I am sitting in a renowned York City or Washington DC's watering hole. I know what I like and I really like "Blue Seafood and Spirits"! You will too.

There is a wealth of great seafood to be had in the Hampton Roads area. As a new resident I have barely scratched the surface. Tonight at Blue Seafood & Spirits I definitely had one of the best seafood dinners I've experienced since moving to VAB. The full experience here is superb. Every person associated with the establishment was friendly and attentive, from the hostess to the chef. After taking our drink orders we were treated to some shrimp brioche. It was a delicious way to take the edge off since we were there for a late dinner. After placing our orders they brought out some sweet potato biscuits with apricot butter. I'm glad they were small because I would not have had the self control to stop eating them. Our awesome waitress brought us a second plate of those during our meal. I ordered the Eastern Shore Dinner which came with a broiled crab cake and fried oysters. Sides were roasted veggies and some asiago & chive mashed potatoes. The sides were fantastic. Roasted veggies can often be a forgetable intrusion, but these were done perfectly. The butter and garlic complemented the fresh taste of the beans, carrots, squash, and zuke. The mashed potatoes were creamy with a nice bite from the asiago. The crab cakes were perfect. All crab and no filler. They had a delightful buttery crust and I did not have to dig any shell out of my mouth the entire time. The oysters were fat and delicious. Battered perfectly and fried to a perfect doneness. It was some of the most well prepared seafood I have had. Another important element is that the kids menu had quality seafood options. They offered grilled options as well as fried options. My kids loved their grilled shrimp and fish plates. I can't wait to go back and try more of their menu. I highly recommend this establishment to those looking for a great seafood dinner at a great price in a cozy, friendly environment. It's a small restaurant so be patient with the wait. You will be greatly rewarded.

this place is everything upscale dining should be to include the owner / chef coming to each table to speak with the clientele. You can tell they work very hard at being the best. The buck head mounted in the men's room that was killed by the owner is also a nice touch. He joked with me that in their last restaurant that in the first restaurant he owned with his wife there were all manners of hunting trophies above the bar that completely mortified his wife. He said when they opened Blue his wife said, "You can have one and it's going in the men's room"

We were looking for a great date night restaurant while on vacation and hit the jackpot with this place. I love a place where the chef/owner comes out to see how things are. Check. I love places where the chef will send out a bonus appetizer based on what they are trying to get you interested in. Check. I love places where the menu isn't the same all the time, refreshed daily for specials, farm fresh ingredients and fresh catches of the day. Check! A Trifecta! This place is NOT to be missed. You won't be disappointed.

I've always wondered how young aspiring chefs start. They graduate from Le Cordon Bleu, then slave away first as an apprenti and then as a cuisinier before (somehow) jumping ship to become head chef of another restaurant. But the owner of this place shows entrepreneurial spirit. This restaurant is a test - a miniature, so to speak, of what a full restaurant would be. It has all the trappings of a Michelin restaurant. There are fresh catches of the day. Soup du jour. Tasting menus. Prix fixe and a la carte (I think). Ingratiating and attentive wait service. Amuse-bouches. A well-stocked bar. But I could feel that the chef is experimenting, trying out different flavor profiles and combinations, testing what works and what doesn't, and honing his craft and learning all the practical things that's needed to make a full restaurant run successfully but don't learn in culinary school. He is running a restaurant without fully running a restaurant yet. This is actually a great thing for the customer, because the prices are miniature as well. You get the talent and knowledge of a world-class chef without the pomp, pretense, and prices. The menu is constructed to fit those of modest means, but he pays full attention to make sure that among the few things he chooses to do, he does them perfectly. He knows to play to his strengths (deep-frying things) and doesn't make things any fancier than they need to. I had the soft shell crabs, which were truly succulent, but frankly I would guess that anything on the menu would be excellent. I want to call special attention to what I believe is their biggest strength - freshness. This is Virginia Beach. The ocean is right there. There is no excuse. I had a fried oyster sandwich for lunch earlier, and I could tell from the crumbly dryness that these oysters has been frozen and thawed multiple times while being shipped some unnecessary distance to arrive at the restaurant. This place is not that. There is a special, indescribable, marine flavor that peeks its head out when you slurp up a fresh oyster or crack open the leg of a crab you caught with your own hands ten minutes prior. You get it here, consistently and potently. I also had the crab chowder, I bet that they made their crab chowder from meat they picked out by hand from a catch that came in that same morning. That's the attention I speak about. And it shows.

Came here under recommendation of Yelp. The menu or atmosphere isn't too fancy (as it shouldn't be at these prices), but everything was extremely fresh and cooked perfectly. Everyone loved their food. I think they also encourage reviews, which also helps their average rating bit. The only low point is that the restaurant is in an unassuming strip mall, and has a little bit of a tacky atmosphere. They have several Walmart brand TV screens showing underwater scenes, with wire covers installed outside the wall. That said the atmosphere is "good enough", and I think the owner has his priorities in the correct order.

Stopped here for dinner on a Friday night it was PACKED, after waiting a bit we were seated, the chairs were soft and pillow like..very comfy, the ambiance was nice, there's ocean videos playing on flat screens throughout the restaurant, mini candles Lit at each table & music playing in the background (that was drowned out by the dinner crowd) our server was very kind and well versed on the menu & specials, we had shark with succotash & variations of potatoes, very yummy! Can't wait to come back to this place!

Blue Seafood & Spirits is the place to go for (somewhat) upscale seafood. Get here early or be prepared to wait - there were plenty of open tables when we arrived for an early dinner around 5 on a Saturday evening, but there was a constant stream of people arriving and by the time we were through every seat was filled. I had the catch of the day which was fish (unfortunately, I don't remember what kind) stuffed with crab and broiled, and the girlfriend got the broiled seafood medley, which was fish, crabcake, and scallops. All of the seafood was fresh, and cooked and seasoned perfectly. The entrees were accompanied by steamed (or maybe sauteed) vegetables and potatoes (we had a choice between sweet or asiago mashed), which were also great. We finished off our meal with a delicious slice of key lime pie. Blue Seafood & Spirits had good service and outstanding food, and also gets bonus points for ambiance - I loved the comfy chairs, ocean-themed decorations, and televisions playing underwater scenes. I would definitely want to come back the next time I'm in the area.

Found this place on yelp due to the first two restaurants that were closer to us being closed. Lucky for my sister and I cause the food was amazing and the staff were great. The chef visited every table to check and see how the food was which I thought was a nice personal touch. The sweet potato biscuits with the apricot butter was absolutely amazing. The crab cakes were a good size and were not loaded with fillers which was nice! And my sister spared me one of her fried oysters and it was absolutely delicious! Glad that we found this place and if we re back in the va beach area we will definitely be back!
(5)Amanda V.
went here based on reviews. I just went in for light fare, so I had the spicy shrimp with marinated cucumbers Split the calimari delicious. will return! Next time will bring a large appetite and my husband so I can nibble at his plate too! nom nom nom nom!
(5)Eva C.
I have been here several times, the food is always wonderful.
(5)Stephen S.
Top notch and I just cannot say enough about how fresh the food here is. Lucky me, I got the last order of soft shell crabs for the evening and they were to die for. Never frozen and fresh from the Eastern shore. My wife had a fantastic fish with Dave & Dee's Oyster Mushrooms. She could not have been happier with the tremendous flavors and fresh vegetable medley . Chef Charles visited every table and he "OWNED" his cuisine. What a great guy and the staff was fast, fun and we will be back and back and back!.
(5)Kyle S.
The food is very good quality and the chef seems like a genuinely nice guy - brought out a complimentary appetizer, asked how the meal was going, and thanked us toward the end - very gracious host. If you're at the beach, it's worth the drive (10-15 mins) if you want quality seafood. The meals we had were very well prepared and as I said, good quality. Service from other staff members was somewhat lacking - had to ask for a few things that she should have been on top of, not overly engaging beyond greeting and taking order. Wouldn't make this a regular stop for each beach trip as I'm not sure there aren't just as good/better options on the beach (I.e. Watermans)
(4)George M.
Fabulous! Fresh, tasty, nice cozy atmosphere, great service and very reasonable prices. Highly recommended!
(5)FabuLisa L.
The food is absolutely incredible. There was about a 45 minute wait when we arrived, yet it was worth every minute. Once seated, we were offered a complimentary shrimp appetizer from the chef. He checked on us and made sure we were enjoying our meal. I was impressed throughout the meal. We ordered the cream of crab soup which was PHENOMENAL. Our entrees which consisted of the shrimp tempura and crab cakes were delicous. The entrees included two sides and the sweet potato cornbread (Yum). We selected the homemade chocolate bread pudding as a dessert and my Fiancé and I were fighting over it (he doesn't even eat sweets lol). The service is quite exceptional. The hostess, servers and staff were incredibly sweet and gracious. This dining experience really made our vacation special.
(5)Shinsil M.
ok, so i've been using yelp for 3yrs and this is my first to write review! this place is right at the point! if this was in Nova where I leave, there would've been a long Crazy waiting line.. we ordered the chef's special catch for the day, I had flounder type finsh and my bf had barrel fish; i loved how they prepared the fish topped with fresh tomato sauce, green olives, red pepper. the sauce was blending well with fish. and vegetable medly was so flavorful, i even finished carrots that i normally don't touch. the food was so well seasoned, it was so flavorful and filling! we had breading pudding which was addicting And their service is awesome! the flow was smooth! we felt like we are having food channel food!
(5)Janine F.
Tried this based on reviews. Went in with idea of trying a drink and app (Pom margarita & tempura shrimp), they were so good we stayed for dinner. Bartender was proficient, atmosphere clean and comfy. We were treated well and the prices were reasonable for the quality of food.
(5)Paul T.
What a fantastic find this was! Everything about itwas great. The Maître d was taking time to learn the name of regulars, the chef brought out an amuse-bouche, and checked in to see how everyone's meal was, my waitress was attentive and charming, and oh ya... they served great food. I went with the special, a perfect lamb dish. The veggie medley was a little flat on taste, could be that it was just being overwhelmed by everything else. I also tried their bread pudding with crème anglaise. It was more like a chocolate mouse lava cake? It was fantastic. Oh, and the bread course was delish. Portion sizes were also spot on, I'm a big fan of right sized meals. The decor was great, especially as a scuba diver, they had all the internal screens showing the coast of Mexico. Really was my first time seeing TV's as art, it was tastefully done. Blue, continues to increase the quality of restaurants at Red Mills Commons, making the location a little food Mecca away from the beach.
(5)John H.
This is a great little restaurant in the Red Milll area. Started off with she crab soup which was one of the top ones I have every had. I had the eastern shore fried oysters which were just lightly flash fried, fresh and very good. My wife had the corvina which was recommended by the waitress and also very good. The service was excellent and the food came out pretty quickly. The chef dropped off some complimentary crab dip before our dinner came out. He also stopped by after we were done eating to make sure everything was okay. If you are looking for intimate dining this is not the place to go. The tables are very close together and seem crammed in. Also thought the crowd was on the older side and I'm in my 40s. Overall I'd highly recommend Blue and will be returning.
(4)Chris R.
I just wanted to dessert. So I google searched "the best bread pudding in Virginia Beach". Blue seafood and spirits popped up. So naturally I had to try it! amazing! The chocolate bread pudding was to die for. It was fresh, chocolatey, velvety, and oh so good! Even though I only ordered dessert, the chef still came to my table to ask how everything was. The staff was friendly, prompt, and attentive. I will definitely be back for the entree, and by entree I mean another dessert!
(5)Jack L.
Absolutely fantastic. Perfect soup. I had the salmon Oscar and it was perfect. My wife had the broiled seafood medley (I sampled - I'm a guy) and it was also perfect. Very attentive staff. Not cheap food, but well worth it. The atmosphere is also great. A nice fairly new place.
(5)Emily D.
Amazing service, even better food. We visited on our last night of vacation at Sandbridge Beach and we were nothing less than satisfied. The sweet potato biscuits are delicious.
(5)Lyndamaria M.
Our waitress was friendly, professional, spoke a little fast, but they were busy so I understand. Something that stood out to my fiancé and I was that the chef was actually out of the kitchen making sure his patrons were enjoying their experience. From the outside, and without the help of Yelp and some friendly locals I don't think my fiancé and I would have chosen this place but we are so glad we did. I had the blue cosmo, it was very tasty. It is first come first serve no reservations needed, nor do they do reservations. Their calamari was delicious and the Steak Diane was amazing. The mushroom melts in your mouth and the steak is juicy, tender, literally falls apart, no knife needed... but they give you one just in case we're visiting from California and will be back annually... so best believe we will be returning!!!!
(5)Matt M.
His place is awesome! I ordered salmon, wife mahi mahi and they were both great! Kids ordered chicken strips and were well received! The sweet potato biscuits were amazing too. We might go back tomorrow, even though it's our last night here.
(5)Kristian B.
So I have to write this bit just because I can't write a one word review. But here's all I want to say. "Epic."
(5)Shawn D.
You will not be disappointed on any level! From the decor to the appetizer and straight through to dessert everything aspect was enjoyable! Chef Charles has a love and passion for great seafood and delivering an enjoyable dining experience. He personally delivered a complimentary smoked mango shark salad appetizer to our table upon arrival and checked with us during and after dinner to inquire about our satisfaction. Sweet potato biscuits with apricot butter are served to all prior to the meal and they are scrumptious! My husband and daughter had the seafood belle haven, broiled scallops, shrimp and craabcake with asiago mashed potatoes and fresh veggie blend. My son ordered shrimp tempura with fries and fresh veggies. I ordered a corvina fish topped with tomatoes, olives and mushrooms, I believe??? , mashed potatoes and a broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini and yellow squash blend. Everything was broiled, steamed, sautéed or however to perfection. Moist not dry. Crisp not mushy. We ordered the chocolate bread pudding with a marnier glaze sauce. Melts in your mouth! Our server Lindsey was excellent and very attentive! The pricing was reasonable! We will dine here again upon returning to Va Beach for our next vacation.
(5)Juan Carlos L.
Elegant atmosphere but not uppity. Excellent customer service from the hostess to the chef. And the food is simply amazing. What a great treat by the beach! 5 star seafood from a 5 star chef!!!!
(5)L F.
Service was impeccable-food was fabulous. We went there because of the reviews and boy, were they right! Had twisted salmon-piled high with crab meat and asparagus, topped with hollandaise sauce. Finished with chocolate bread pudding-to die for! My husband loved the sweet potato biscuits with mango butter. Will definitely visit again.

I came in last night for the first time to try it out. I found out about the place from others who have been there and said that it was really good. When you go in, it's not overly decorated, but there are televisions lined up on the walls. They are not used for shows and such, but to show different aquatic scenes and such. Based on that, along with the menu, the place is definitely themed for seafood and about the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Many items on the menu are named after a town or part of Virginia's Eastern Shore. After ordering, the manager (though I think it might be the owner) came to the table with an hors d'oeuvre, which was a Cajun shrimp, which was excellent. It was packed with flavor, and the sauce the went on it complemented the shrimp well. No appetizer was ordered on this visit. I had the fried tempura shrimp for dinner. I can't remember the last time I had shrimp as fresh as it was here. I thought that maybe they just got it as a fresh catch on the same day. The entree came with a mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. The shrimp were also a large size. I wasn't planning to have a dessert, but I ended up having one anyways. I got their maple glazed crème brûlée. The dessert was quite delicious. I would definitely get this dessert again sometime, but not necessarily every time I go. Service was fantastic. The server was on point and checked on us to make sure the food was done properly, etc. This place is definitely a first rate restaurant. If you're in the area and want something that's a bit more upscale, but still has the casual feel, this is the place to go.
(5)Jon S.
The food is amazing here. I have been here twice now and have not been disappointed. The service is top notch and to have the chef check on every table during meals is phenomenal. I went this time with 2 friends and decided we would each try something different, everything was great. Dessert was to die for, the bread pudding was amazing and I will go back to have that over again. I can understand why they have a 5 star rating still with all of the amazing items on the menu and an impeccable staff.
(5)Glenn D.
Wow. The food here was fantastic. Service was friendly and prompt. It is not a big place and it filled up quickly. The food combinations were creative and the portions were just right. Will definitely come back.
(5)John K.
I usually have a rule no 5 star 1st visit review, unless I am totally blown away!! And tonight I was!! Our Waitress Tanya was awesome knowledgeable about the dishes on point with suggestions and very nice to chat with, the food is the star of this place. The broiled crab cake appetizer was one of the best I have had all meat no filler and melts in your mouth it eclipsed Baltimore's finest and then some. The fried seafood platter was a dream, all lightly fried not overbearing with the most amazing scallops, shrimp and oysters accompanied by a fried crab cake and perfectly cooked fish all was perfect. The house made deserts of chocolate bread pudding and key lime pie where tasty and enjoyable well worth the stretched tummy. I have lived in VB my whole life and must say this was the best meal I have had here in recent memory, from decor, selection, service and taste Blue does it spot on.
(5)Joseph J.
Delicious. Excellent service. Although not a place I would consider "kid friendly" the staff was very accommodating for a family with three young children. That is kid friendly. I'm glad we stopped by.
(5)Debbie D.
On vacation looking for a local place for dinner. Came here based on yelp stars and reviews. Awesome food the owner has a great thing here!
(5)Patrick C.
Perfect, everything was perfect, what more needs to be said?. Complementary Smoked Mako appetizers were wonderful. My wife had their crab cake dinner and it was great. Not sure what was holding it together since it was almost all crab meat. My son had Oscar Salmon. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the mashed potatoes were honestly some of the best he ever had. I had a blackened fish if the day which was tender and flaky with just the right amount of blackened spice. It came with three tempura shrimp that were very large and cooked to perfection. Next time we are in Virginia Beach we will definitely be going back.
(5)Stacie S.
Got here just before 5 pm and the place was completely empty - perfect for an early dinner. Derrick was great: Friendly, Polite, Professional and Attentive - all while manning the bar! The bar crowd started arriving just after 5 for happy hour and by 5:30 a steady stream of couples. I started with 6 oysters on the half shell and then the Salmon Oscar - both delish and cooked perfectly. The veggies were a little blah but I would definitely come here again.
(4)Karla D.
Just had a FANTASTIC experience!! Service and food was amazing. Complementary oyster appetizers and sweet potato biscuits were the best. I had the Salmon Oscar and would order it again without hesitation. I highly recommend you check it out
(5)Michael K.
Wonderful dinning experience, taste and quantity of food outstanding. The service was exceptional making for a very nice evening. This restaurant is on my list to return to for many years to come. I had the soft shell crabs and they were the best I've ever had. The chocolate bread pudding is a must.
(5)Colleen B.
Well deserving of 5+ stars. We choose to sit at the bar and the bartender was very knowledgeable about the menu and their locally craft beers. The chef brought us a cajun shrimp appetizer---amazing. We had the happy hour shrimp, "happy shrimp"---the best shrimp I have had in a long time. We shared the broiled dinner of fish of the day, flounder, crab cake we had a choice of sweet potato or asiago mashed potatoes, we got the sweet potato. Also, a vegetable medley. Everything was fresh, seasoned well and cooked to perfection.
(5)Sagittarii A.
My experience here with my husband was excellent. The food is really delicious. We started off with the crab soup which was phenomenal. The chef greeted us with a complimentary shrimp ceviche which was delicious. I had the broiled seafood dish which was perfect. I would suggest this quaint place to anyone who enjoys great seafood.
(5)James R.
Vacationing in the VB area and my daughter found BLUE on Yelp--we had to try it! We were amazed! All of the 5-star reviews are spot-on. Some reviews suggest the prices are a little high. I say they are a bargain for the quality of the food, the rich flavors and the excellent service you get. It is easy to see why some Yelpers note that this place was packed. We were a little early for dinner and had no trouble getting seating. Derek was our waiter and he was very friendly, helpful with describing the menu items, and timely in his delivery and pickup. Chef Charles visited a couple of times and that really impressed us. The other staff we met were also friendly. It was hard deciding from the menu choices. Here are a few highlights from our visit: We can recommend the crab cake and the seafood belle haven. For me, sweet potatoes usually call for a generous application of butter. But not at BLUE! So I recommend the sweet potato as a side veggie dish. For dessert, you cannot fail with the Key Lime Pie. We were quite pleased with the rest of our meal, too. I would like to go back sometime to try some of the other entrees and desserts.
(5)Nick D.
Hidden Gem for seafood!!! This place provides great food from the Eastern Shore. The chef and owner personally comes to every table to see how you are enjoying the food. I absolutely love the food here and the specials are delicious. I've lived in the Sandbridge area for most of my life and I refer any tourist staying in the area to check out Blue bc they are unlike any other place for seafood in the area. Margie and Ray's is fried frozen fish. Baja is overpriced sysco products. The SB island is not a place I would take anyone to eat. They all have good qualities but if you want excellent seafood nearby the SB area. You must try Blue Seafood!! Small restaurant but extremely worth the wait!
(5)Bec J.
New fav place! No wait on a Wed at 7pm.. Servers are very friendly and Chef Charles dropped off a tasty little shrimp bite for us to try. The calamari is very yummy! Sweet potato biscuits are fantastic! Portions are very good - not too much! The crab cakes are excellent with lots of crab! I hear they are award winning. Oysters are also excellent! Fresh sides and chive mashed potatoes! This place is good and 5 stars is totally supported!
(5)Brad B.
Top notch. Perfectly prepared seafood with creative and delectable twists. Service was beyond reproach and the chef/owner greeted us at the door, and visited our table at the conclusion of our meal. Not a bad thing to say. If anything, it was crowded and it made our romantic dinner a challenge at times, but easily forgiven by the quality of food/service. This place needs 3000 sq ft more seating to meet the well-deserved demand.
(5)Ted E.
I cant say anything but "Fantastic". A great staff, great local seafood and each drink served with the greatest of care.
(4)G H.
VERDICT: Good food, but a bit overpriced and crowded/loud. That said, it's likely the best restaurant in Red Mill. PROs: The crab soup is good and the entrees (e.g., twisted salmon oscar and steak diane) are decent. Healthy and affordable children's menu, which is only provided verbally. Good mixed drinks (e.g., Spring Break for $10). Bathroom decor (e.g., hunting theme in men's bathroom and mints & hand lotion in women's bathroom). The men's bathroom should be painted a hunters green or dark red though; the hunting theme is confusing with pastel yellow walls. Charles, the owner with his wife, is visible and active and brings out free appetizers (e.g., cajun shrimp). The waitstaff, especially Holly, who sadly no longer works there, is quite attentive. The TV screens show an underwater video which is both scenic and entertaining to children. CONs: The quality of the food and mixed drinks do not justify the prices; the majority of dishes should be $2-$3 less. Although the food is supposedly fresh, the health effects are soon cancelled out by the tremendous amounts of butter in the mashed potatoes, cream in the crab soup, holidaise sauce on the twisted salmon oscar, etc. It is a bit crowded, which makes it too loud and keeps it from being an intimate experience. The she crab soup is good, but not as good as Big Sam's (near Oceanfront) which has pieces of crab meat. The steak diane, the only steak on the menu, is more of a salisbury steak than a signature steak and surprisingly subpar.
(4)Lara R.
If it was acceptable to lick my plate I would have done so. The food was outstanding. It's obvious that the chef has a passion for what he's doing. That alone is great, but with a staff of professionals it just makes for an exceptional experience. My family WILL be coming back, and we are bringing all of our out of town friends here.
(5)Brittny D.
This place is amazing. We live right down the street and passed by so many times never looking twice. Saw on YELP they had 5 stars and a bunch of reviews so we had to try it. Let me tell you, this place deserves every star and than some. The atmosphere was very relaxed and upscale. Staff was very welcoming and friendly. The chef came out and served us with an amuse bouche of black tip shark and caviar. I took my bite and about died and went to heaven! It was perfectly balanced and I could have eaten a whole meal of it. My daughter wanted the crab soup but I wasn't sure she would like it because it had sherry in it. So they brought her a small sample to make sure! So thoughtful. Needless to say it was great! I will get that next time for sure. My husband had the flounder w/ crab cake and I had the shrimp tempura. Both being seafood foodies we were in love with the first bite. The crab cake was not fishy or dry. The flounder was flaky and also not even close to being dry. My shrimp was golden brown and again cooked to perfection. The horseradish sauce they give was such a good compliment to the sweetness of the tempura. This place is amazing and we can't wait to go back. So glad we found this hidden diamond. Thanks to Chef and service staff for a great family dinner!
(5)Johnny G.
The atmosphere was great and the food was.beyond superb. Derick was excellent and very helpful. Both meals were awesome and the crab cake and fried oysters were the best I have ever had! If you are in or around Virginia Beach this place is a must!
(5)Tessa W.
This was one of the best restaurant experiences I have had in a long time. The food was amazing, the staff was excellent. Chef Charles mingled amongst the patrons and made us feel right at home. Excellent beer and wine menu, and the food was fresh and delicious. A must for dinner if you are near Virginia Beach.
(5)Rick S.
1st Yelp review here, and there's a reason for that. I have never been a review writer, but I decided to join just to write a review for Blue. Ate here for the first time last night and will definitely be back. Raw oysters were fresh, and the crab soup was more crab than soup. Wife had fried oyster dinner which was perfect, and I had the broiled scallops. The chef came by twice to chat, very friendly atmosphere. All in all, a delicious little place in Red Mill. Highly recommend! Oh, and get the chocolate bread pudding for dessert. There is a picture of it on here somewhere, it tastes as good as it looks!
(5)David D.
The best seafood ever. Casual dinning. Extremely polite staff. The chef came out and spoke with everyone.

My wife and I had the most amazing seafood hands down that we have had since we have lived in Virginia this is truly an amazing place with a talented chef Charles. Between him, his wife Shannon who waited on us and the polite friendly staff I recommend this place to everyone! Also this is the first and only time I have done a review because of how impressed we were!!! A+++++ food, service and value for your money also make sure to get the cheesecake

We were visiting from out of town, and saw the reviews. Everyone in our party loved every bite, from the incredible soup to the amazing dessert. An absolute must-try. If you want seafood, this is an amazing place to go.

They don't take reservations, but it starts to slow down around 8 and the kitchen never closes before 9:30 at the earliest. Best seafood restaurant in Va Beach!

Excellent food and superb service. Best crabcake we've ever had. The pudding is out of this world! !!! Highly recommended.

Best place in the entire tidewater area for any type of seafood and drinks. The bartender Derek is one of the best bartenders you will ever have. The sweet potato biscuits are complimentary but are one of the best food items I have ever had. This is a must try and must return place to eat and enjoy a drink.

There's a reason that Blue gets so many 5 star reviews: the food is that good and the staff are that welcoming. We were sat at the bar rather than wait for a table. Bartender Derrick made us feel quite at home. The pineapple mojito was good enough to get an encore. The Caesar salad was excellent but the creamy crab soup was full of shreds of crab laced with Sherry and the tastiest soup I've had in years. I had the broiled seafood platter which had perfectly prepared scallops, a devine crab cake and a piece of a solid mild fish caught of the coast of Mexico that completed a wonderful entre experience. The accompanying sauteed baby string beans, zucchini and yellow squash with a small organic sweet potato roundedb off a perfect plate. my lovely had the broiled scallops with the same accompaniments for her own plate of equal quality. we finished with a bread pudding dotted with blueberries that was of almost custard-like texture. We traveled six hours with our pups to vacation at Virginia Beach and this will be a high point.

The sweet potato biscuit was amazing especially with the apricot butter. Must try the pineapple mojito and the crab cakes. Will come back again!

We went here last night looking for good seafood and found it. The chef was engaging, the wait staff was knowledgable and timely in their interactions. We had crab cakes, soft shell crabs, red snapper, and a mixed seafood dish. Everything was tasteful, appropriately sized, and very enjoyable. We will go back.

Amazing! The food is delicious and the staff is super friendly and efficient. Blue has the appearance and quality of an upscale restaurant, but with a down-to-earth and welcoming attitude. The chef came out to check on everything, which is always appreciated. We had a baby in our party and they were quick to get her food out to her to keep her happy (and quiet) which was very smart and helpful. I do not live in the area, but I will make it a point to eat here each time I visit.

Blue was fantastic! We headed over late on a Tuesday night, but they ushered us in and were incredibly welcoming. The staff was amazing, very knowledgable, and attentive. The atmosphere was wonderful, upscale but still very comfortable. Finally, the food was great! I had the special barramundi (which was divine) and my husband had one of the dishes from the menu. Both were great options, and the sides (and sweet potato biscuits) they came with were wonderful as well. They also had an extensive local beer list that my husband thoroughly enjoyed. Overall, you can't go wrong with this stellar local joint!

This new seafood place recently opened up in the space that used to house the now defunct 7 Martini's and Tapas. Some of the decor has changed but the layout is mostly identical to the previous regime. We both tried the crab soup as a starter. This comes out much more like a New England chowder than it does a version of she crab soup. The flavors of dairy are very prominent with no hints of Old Bay or sherry. It was quite tasty for what it was but I guess we both have become accustomed to the flavors of she crab. If we don't get it we feel like we missed out on something. Anyway, for entrees I did the crab cakes and my wife did an order of fried oysters. The flavors were outstanding in both selections, which can only mean the seafood was screaming fresh. My cakes were loaded with lump crabmeat with no noticeable filler of any kind. The certainly passed the test and at $21 for two good sized cakes, I felt well taken care of for my money. No complaints at all. The sauteed veggies on the side were decent enough but lacked any pizazz until I doused them in pepper. The starch component for each of us was a blop of mashed potatoes, which seems to be a kitchen hold over from the 7 Martinis days. The chef in that kitchen seemed to be obsessed with mashed potatoes, which was one of many things that eventually turned me off the place. So the proteins are excellent but the sides do need some work. Once the kitchen gets settled into a groove I hope they get a bit more adventurous with the side dishes. Don't neglect them, please. We did get a chance to talk to the chef/owner during our meal and he explained that he gets all of his seafood directly from his own purveyors on the Eastern shore. People he has known and does business with for years. That is an excellent sign and the very reason his seafood tasted so delicious. I am looking forward to a return visit very soon.

I wish i cd give them 6 stars. Chef came to our table (unsolicited) with server to discuss beer and wine pairings. Most products they serve are local. Great service. Corvina, blackened or broiled, is recommended.

Great dinner! Excellent service. It was nice to eat a restaurant where both the staff and owner/chef seemed to care about the food they served. I would definitely go back. We had the crab soup 4/5 The oysters Rockefeller 5/5 The biscuits with the apricot butter 4/5 The fried oysters 5/5 The Crab cake 4.5/5 Overall the experience was great

This place is fantastic! I've eaten all over and in many cities. The vibe is amazing and no one rushes you through a meal. The shrimp bite and sweet potato biscuit that are given by the chef are so fantastic. Great drink selection and the seafood is amazing! If you want great food and a relaxed non rushed atmosphere this is the place to go!

Came here on a random decision after a long day of work, my fiancé and I just wanted somewhere close. I absolutely loved it. It was about 6:30 and it was pretty busy, so we decided to sit at the bar and eat. It was really entertaining watching Derrick. He's was great to talk to and he made sure we had everything, even though he was extremely busy bar tending. We got a sample of an appetizer while we were deciding what to order from one of the owners. He came out and greeted us with some samples. We ended up starting with the calamari, which wasn't bad, very crispy and came with fried jalapeños. The sweet potato biscuits are very dense and heavy, it comes with apricot butter. I got the broiled seafood medley. The fish and scallops weren't bad, very fresh and moist. The crab cake was soaked in butter, it wasn't as I pictured a broiled crab cake that I'm use to. The sides were amazing! I loved the veggie medley (corn, asparagus and cherry tomatoes) and the organic baked sweet potato was perfectly cooked! My fiancé got the fried shrimp. It was decent size shrimp, which I liked his dish more than mine! The mashed potatoes is REALLY good! Everything here is extremely fresh and they try to stay local! You'll definitely be able to taste it! Highly recommend and we'll be back!!

We visited Blue Seafood while vacationing in VA Beach based on the high ratings and complimentary reviews we read. Chef Charles and staff did not disappoint; this place was wonderful. We arrived about an hour or so before closing with a party of 7 (including 3 children.) We were greeted with smiles and a welcoming demeanor despite the late hour. After we were sat we were promptly greeted by our server Reed - Reed was awesome. He was knowledgeable about the menu, kept our drinks filled all night and even though it was late and the restaurant was closing, he never made us feel rushed to leave. He even filled our drinks while we settled our bill. The superb service was matched by the deliciously prepared food. She Crab soup, Fried tempura shrimp and the Seafood Belle Haven were among some of the favorites. And the sweet potato biscuits were fabulous. We decided not to get dessert but we are already planning a return visit to Blue to sample the sinful looking chocolate bread pudding. Can't say enough about this charming establishment.

I love seafood. But I also like trying different things. This time I am kicking myself for not sticking with the seafood. Fried eastern oysters for the app. Cooked just right. Here's where I made my mistake. Instead of getting the salmon, like I would normally buy, I tried the rack of lamb just for a change. Lamb cooked a perfect medium rare. But way over seasoned for me. Could not enjoy the taste of the lamb due to the seasoning. Great service and noise level was such that you could have normal conversation. Giving it 4 stars because the other 4 members of our party all had seafood and enjoyed it immensely. Will try this place again next time we are in the area.

Our best meal of the week! I got the Swordfish special. It was perfectly cooked - a flavor explosion! My husband got the flash fried oysters- excellent- juicy and tender. My 9-year old son got the pork chop. He ate the whole thing!! Servers were helpful and knowledgeable. This place is a must if you like good food!
(5)Lorenzo C.
This place is so friendly, me and some friends come here at least twice a month. I ordered the special for the week oyster rockfeller fried or raw they are so good.
(4)Julie S.
Was hesitant when I saw all the 5 star reviews and when we drove up to its nondescript location; but it really is as good as it gets. Excellent service, superb cocktails, homemade salad dressings, and outstanding entrees. Chef found his way to our table of 6 to be sure everything was up to par. It clearly is deserving of a 5 star rating.

Date night in my family usually means my husband and I spending Saturday night at a typical chain restaurant, ordering meals we've had a thousand times, merely because I like consistency. While I love trying new things, when schedules are busy and money is budgeted (my husband is a banker, so he manages every penny), you tend to look to the familiar because you know it can be counted upon. This past Saturday, I was ready to take a risk. I was really in the mood for some seafood, so I sought out Yelp for some guidance. After going through some reviews, I found Blue Seafood and Spirits. The menu looked great, so I convinced my husband this was worth our weekend date allowance. Upon arrival, I was pleased to find it was a quaint space with great lighting and decor. It was clean and we were met with friendly faces. The restaurant was mostly full at 7:00pm, but we were seated immediately. Our waitress, Alicia, was very kind and attentive. I loved that the chef, who is also the owner, brought out a complimentary appetizer for me and my husband, welcoming us to the restaurant. It was DELICIOUS! Crab claw salad atop a crisp, garlic crostini. We ordered the crab soup, as I saw it was a recommendation on Yelp. It was okay. The creamy broth was not super flavorful, but perhaps that was the idea. It made the other ingredients (bacon, crab meat, and leeks) shine a bit brighter. For my entree, I ordered crab cakes with the organic sweet potato and chef's vegetable, which was carrots and green beans. My husband ordered the tempura battered shrimp with asiago mashed potatoes and chef's vegetable. My crab cakes were cooked perfectly. They were filled with crab and didn't have too much breading, like ones I've had in the past. The spices were not too aggressive, just perfect. Even though I'm pregnant, two were filling for me. The sweet potato was great and the vegetables were tasty with a hint of butter and salt. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his entree. The shrimp were butterflied and dip in a tempura batter then fried. The coating was really light and airy. The sauce served with it enhanced the flavors. The shrimp was really fresh. They were jumbo shrimp and didn't taste frozen- definitely made to order. He loved the asiago mashed potatoes and, despite the fact that he's not much of a veggie guy, he enjoyed those, too. We ended our meal with the chocolate bread pudding, though the two other desserts offered by the waitress sounded excellent. The bread pudding was great. It was served over a creme anglaise rather than having a sweet, syrupy sauce oozing from the middle. It was really nice and didn't make you feel like you were going to gain 40 pounds by eating it. Overall, great food, atmosphere, and staff. I would definitely recommend it to any Va Beach native or visitor.

My husband and I went last Tues at 4:30. We are early dinner people so this was good. Enjoyed a perfect cocktail and was given an appetizer that was excellent. Dinner was very fresh and the seafood cooked perfect. I had fried oysters. The vegetables were delicious also the sweet potato biscuits were to die for with apricot butter. Ummmmm. We will go back. Owner was so nice to talk with us. Deserts sounded heavenly. Next time I may have a small meal and go for the desserts

We had a fabulous meal at this wonderful secret spot near our house. We are unsure how we missed the opening as we are fresh seafood fans. So glad to have discovered it! Our party of four enjoyed delicious specialty cocktails and local brews on tap to start our experience. Every one of the entrees ordered were excellent. The crab cakes were fantastic. The oysters on the Eastern Shore dinner were reported as the "best I've ever had" by my husband. The asiago chive mashed potatoes were decadent. Chef, thank you for the deviled crab samplers. You should be proud of this wonderful place you've created.

if you live in Va Beach or are visiting. DO NOT, I repeat DO not miss this little gem. Best seafood dinner I have had in Years.. Chef/owner is amazing and hand delivers amuse bouche to each table. I had the fresh catch which was Pacific Rockfish and my fiancé had the crab cakes. Both were prepared perfectly!!! The server sat my plate down, then told me that the chef was not happy with my portion size of fish, so they were bringing me another piece to make up for it. I couldn't believe it! AND the second piece was even more amazing than the first!!!! Everyday they have some version of a crab soup, last night was a cream version with corn. My fiancé loves crab soup and he was definitely not disappointed. Everything came out piping hot, which I love.. So what I'm trying to say is run don't walk!!! have dinner here!!!! If there happens to be a wait, WAIT, it is totally worth however long you stand around for a table. Leave room for dessert, you will be happy you did

Great seafood and service. Mom and pop type place so not a chain. The food is superb. My wife, two kids and I all thought it was 5 stars for the food.
(5)Derek K.
Scallops were a bit bland on the sea scallop dinner even though they were drowning in butter. Vegetable medley had good seasonings and baked sweet potato was.... well a baked sweet potato. Jumbo lump crab cake was pretty good. Not the best at the beach, but good. The crab soup with spinach was good. I prefer a sweeter crab soup like Maninos, but it wasn't bad. Overall, it was a decent meal. I rate it more of a 3.5, but 4 will have to do. In order to get a 5, you need to be the best and the oceanfront still has the top places. It is a nice addition to Red mill though, as we needed more seafood places down here. We'll be back to try some other dishes. Overall service was decent, but the waitress could have improved. One wrong order, which is no biggie. However my drink went dry 3 times during my meal and had to wait a bit too long for refills. A huge nono in many people's books. Key lime pie was ok and chocolate bread pudding was ok.

All seafood lovers MUST dine here. Absolutely the most fresh seafood you will find. I've had a bad run of local crab tasting like it's been sitting on a boat for a week before it hit my plate. Not at Blue though. So fresh, and flavorful. The menu looked so delicious that I had the waitress choose my entrée and she came back with the crab stuffed salmon with green beans and sweet potato on the side. I couldn't have been more thrilled with selection. Also a Def must try is the crab soup with bacon, soft shelled crab and fried oysters. You will not be disappointed. We will be back again and again.

Outstanding! A couple of friends from the area suggested I try this place. It far surpassed my wildest expectations. It was very busy during dinner rush when I arrived, but the hostess made me feel welcome and let me know it would only be a few minutes. The service was impeccable through and through. However, it's the seafood and Chef Charles that really shine here. I had the Broiled seafood medley, with ultra fresh sea scallops, lump crab cake and cobia fish in a herb butter sauce. I was unfamiliar with cobia and the waiter explained it perfectly. It tasted similar to swordfish and was delicious! The sides were asiago mashed potatoes and roasted corn. There wasn't a crumb left when I was finished with it! In addition to the locally sourced food, it's the little touches that make this place special. The decor is beautiful, with HD tv's showing ocean scapes that give the impression of being underwater or in an aquarium. It's a pet peeve of mine when gourmet restaurants ruin the ambiance with a tv blaring sports or something to distract you. At the end of the meal, Chef Charles took the time to stop by and briefly chat with diners. It's a wonderful gesture of respect for the customers and an educational experience as well. For those out of town and unfamiliar with the area, it's a little bit hard to find, in a larger shopping center. But don't be fooled by the chain stores around, this place is truly a gem and worth the trip. Can't wait to return again!

This restaurant was a tad bit smaller than I imagined in my head when I looked it up on line however don't be dissuaded off by its humble size. This place is amazing. It comes off as a bit upscale yet homey, if that makes any sense. I came here on a Wednesday night, by myself, to celebrate my re-enlistment around 7 pm. Oddly enough i continued to remain by myself as the only diner in the restaurant. The staff was curteous and friendly,( maybe because I was the only one in there? Or maybe they are just a great staff) and tool my order right away. So I ordered the Twisted Salmon Oscar, the soup of the day which happened to be a crab chowder of sorts. The chowder came out first. It was freshly made, creamy and delicious. I was upset I only ordered a cup. Next was the salmon, it was superb! (Now I'm from Florida and in the navy so I've eaten fish, good fish, all around the world) The salmon itself was flaky, the crab Oscar had huge pieces of lump crab in it and the side dishes were also tasty...scrump-delium-tious.

I've been to Blue three times in three weeks and each experience is better than the last. Everything is fresh and prepared to perfection. The lump crabmeat crab cakes literally melt in your mouth and one bite of the flounder reintroduces you to how fresh fish is really supposed to taste. The service is always on spot and the chef/owner always makes several appearances throughout the meal to check on his customers and to send out several complimentary "little bites" for your enjoyment. The in-house, hardwood smoked oysters were fantastic! It's wonderful to have a first class restaurant so close by, finally. Watch out, all you old eateries in VB, this Eastern Shore guy is doing it absolutely right. You have some serious competition.

Found It On Yelp!!! While vacationing in Virginia Beach from the Shenandoah Valley we were looking for a restaurant serving good local seafood and vegetables when we discovered the Blue Seafood & Spirits reviewed on Yelp. Boy did we hit the jackpot for fine dining. An intimate setting bursting with class and terrific atmosphere. We had a short wait at the bar for a table and were attended to by Derek who saw to our every need. Once seated we enjoyed excellent service throughout the meal by Reed who never let a chance go by without checking on us. I enjoyed the broiled seafood platter which included barrel fish, lump crab meat and shrimp with mashed potatoes and fresh veggies. Every bite was one to savor from beginning to end. Chef Charles, the owner, added his personal touch by actually serving the meal himself and thanking us for our patronage as we prepared to leave. The staff was attentive, welcoming and professional in every respect making you feel like a friend come to dinner. We wish this business all the best and look forward to returning in the near future.

Wonderful food! Polite staff! What could be better Eating delicious locally themed dishes while supporting local farmers and watermen.
(5)Mary D.
We had the oysters Rockefeller as an appetizer. I had the crab stuffed shrimp special while my husband ordered the broiled seafood from the menu. Our food was delicious! The chef has strong connections to the Eastern shore so the seafood is fresh! We will definitely return.
(5)John H.
Outstanding!!! It's always impressive when the owner/chef stops by every table to thank them for coming in. Service was spot on, entrees reasonably priced for good seafood. Key lime pie with cashew/graham cracker crust was excellent.
(5)Pauline B.
My husband and I are visiting family and they treated us to Blue for our birthdays. Everything we had was delicious- the soft shelled crabs, the tempura shrimp, crab cakes, grilled cobia. The servers and Chef Charles were just as nice as they could be. We hadn't planned on eating dessert, but were talked into trying their chocolate bread pudding. We sure know how to clean a plate! We even got our picture taken with Hecter the Chicken! Great food, great service, great fun!
