I have been going to Cheng's for years and it is my favorite Chinese restaurant, hands down. Not only that but they have the BEST sesame chicken you will find ANYWHERE. I'm not exaggerating. After having it there for the first time, I've ordered it at other places, thinking it would be good, too. I refuse to order sesame chicken anywhere else now - nobody does it as well as Cheng's. I've never had a dish there I didn't like. I moved to L.A. in 2007 and when I go back east to visit family, I always request dinner at Cheng's. I just wish they had one in L.A.!

Had the sesame chicken (thank you fellow Yelpers!) with the green beans. The sesame chicken was awesome. Huge portions, of tender chicken in a velvety sauce topped with sesame seeds. The green beans were ok, nothing special. I generally really like Chinese broccoli so I will try that next time. I recommended this place to some co-workers and they were very happy after their meal. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Absolutely delicious Chinese food.Best I have ever had every single time tastes exactly the same tangy sweet crisp perfection .Eggrolls to die for, great Chinese dishes, elegant atmosphere. You can even feed the koi in large koi pond with fountain which kids love. You can order a Peking duck whole or half and have it served and sliced at your table. The drinks are also just as good,Theres a volcano drink for 2 with a little island in the middle on fire full of yummy concotion for 13.00!They bring real glasses not plastic and pots of jasmine tea complimentary with meal. Its always a breathtaking view and dining experience, really I cannot rave enough about this suprising hidden little gem. Utmost professionalism in management , waitstaff and bar.More importantedly the best Oriental food I have ever had in a upscale not chain mall run of mill restaraunt. Good things Lotus pineapple rice with seafood and chicken served in a whole pineapple the best oriental dish I have ever had .Most delicate and delicioius ever very light and airy real scallops and not the greasy heavy feel after some food.Little parasols and paper animals in your drinks.Silver service tableside attention from most acommadating and eager staff. Shrimp eggroll absolutely delicious light cripsy just enough wrapper, filling and shrimp . Great general tsao chicken.Fresh broccoli Great beef and brocolli. Great lo mein and fried rice.Unique romantic quaint dishes and alot of seafood which I love, atmosphere is awesome, staff is great but food is the best,

For years Chengs was my family's Chinese staple. The food there is good (our favorites were the Rainbow Chicken and Sesame Chicken). Most anything you get there is at worst decent, and occasionally awesome. Service there was usually great, but on two different occasions my wife and I dined in and after waiting for 30 minutes for a waiter (and trying to make eye contact with staff) walked out irate and hungry. The first time it happened I wrote it off as an off night, but after the second I kinda got pissy at Chengs. The rating would have been a four if not for those two experiences. Still a great place for take-out.

The food is consistently good!! I can't say there is anything I've had on the menu that I haven't liked. Try the Bananas Flambe too! It's better than any desert you'll have!! The only thing I wasn't too happy with was the booth had worn out seats and the waiter and waitress were a bit too attentive in wanting to clear our table when we were clearly still eating. The portions are large and the prices are reasonable!!

Food: 2 stars. -1 star for poor service.

Definitely not your standard Chinese joint, insofar as the menu does not consist of a variety of mystery meats drowning in monosodium glutamate syrup. And I say that with more than a little affection for the by-the-book Chinese delivery joints. Cheng's covers most of the expected bases and then some (yes, you can get Beef w/ Broccoli), with the differences being to Cheng's credit: the meats and various seafoods are fresh, recognizable, and flavorful, served with tasty but not overwhelming sauces in reasonable proportions. This is probably the only Chinese place I can think of that not only does dine-in service, but which is highlighted by its dine-in service: while they're not the fleetest wait-staff in the world, the servers do a nice job and the food is usually very well presented. Some of the more interesting dishes come served atop portable burners, crackling in pans, or, in the case of the South Seas Pineapple Rice (delicious!) served in a hollowed-out pineapple. The menu is deep and varied, the portions are generous, and the egg rolls (I'm an egg roll guy) are friggin' outstanding. There's a full bar, although I can't claim to have ordered anything particularly adventurous from it. A few other notes: the decor is very cool, if a bit over the top; you'll either love the Lotus Treasure Rice or rue the day you heard of it; parking can be a bit of a headache, because on a weekend night there pretty much isn't any. Still, if you're in the mood for Chinese and want something more than bloated food coma in an origami box (which, hey, there's nothing wrong with bloated food coma in an origami box: I love the stuff), Cheng's is one of the better options in the metro area.

clean and friendly skip the lunch buffet and go right to the menu. excellent szechuan beef and the best General Tso's in the area.

I came here while job hunting around Sterling. I was really happy with the place! Great drinks (a tad expensive) decent food... But what I really liked was the kind service and warm wash towel they gave us at the end of our meal. I will return sometime this summer.

One of the better Chinese restaurants in the area-- one of the few that mostly do dine-in rather than takeout. Food is decent. They have a full bar and some specialty drinks, though I didn't try any.

I thought this was pretty decent Chinese place. The prices were fair. Had the Won-Ton soup and General Tso's chicken. Best Won-Ton soup I've ever had. The General Tso's was good, not the best I've tasted, but better than a lot of places. The breading-to-chicken ratio was good and though the sauce was a little on the sweeter side than I'd like (though, again not as bad as a lot of other places) it had a nice garlic flavor. Service was very attentive. They had a lunch buffet which looked alright but I always think it's better to order off the menu in most cases. Overall a good choice if you want good Chinese food and are in this area for shopping/business.

I have been going here ever since moving to northern virginia 10 years ago. It is the best chinese in loudoun county. If you like spicy food one of the best dishes is Thai Basil Chicken I order it every time I go there.

A local favorite. I've been to Cheng's half a dozen times and have never had a bad experience. The decor and restaurant itself is run down and tacky, but the food is good. Parking can be an issue if you visit during peak times. I've taken people to Cheng's and have recommended it to many, however, it's a 50/50 tie as to whether or not my friends and family liked Cheng's. So, it sounds like to me, you either like it a lot or you don't at all. Give it a try and see if you agree.

I LOVE this place! The scenery is wonderful. They have a little pond with a wooden bridge and fishes right in the middle of the restaurant. Their food is good and they have great service.

For a long time now, I have been a fan of Cheng's Oriental Restaurant because the food is simply delicious. No, you won't find many (if any) authentic Chinese dishes, nor will you find splendid decor and ambiance. Instead, Cheng's is a place that simply serves better tasting food than almost anyone else. And lots of it. The portion sizes are enormous. The only way to get more food would be to eat at a buffet. Not only will you leave Cheng's stuffed to the brim, but you will almost certainly have to take food home with you. Talk about bang for your buck. Quantity is certainly not an issue with Cheng's. Cheng's also offers a long and varied menu that will keep you coming back to try new dishes. You could, for instance, order Chinese takeout staples like General Tso's Chicken or Fried Rice. But why stop there when you could order their spicy Da-Chang Chicken, their famous Sesame Chicken, or the Crispy-Shredded Beef? Their lamb and shrimp plates are similarly delectable, as are the Beef Spare Ribs and Szechuan Beans. Yum. Cheng's has a tendency of becoming crowded around peak hours (especially during weekends), but you can make reservations if you call ahead. I certainly recommend Cheng's if you are in the Sterling area and have a hankering for Chinese. You won't be disappointed. --- Pros: Tasty food, large portions, good value, great selection Cons: Mediocre setting, crowds are unpredictable

As a rule of thumb when you eat in any restaurant... particularly Chinese... you want to make sure the bathrooms are clean. HOLY MOWLY! Leaky bathroom, moldy, smelled funky and toilets were disgusting. The atomosphere is that of something from the 1960's. Table clothes and table napkins were stained, the carpet looked old and soiled. The booths and chairs appear to need repair. Worst of all the large ground level koi pond was emanating this "dirty fish tank" smell. Ok... so now comes the food. We ordered shrimp something with carrots that looked like these were cut with a serrated blade, sauce was white. We also ordered a few other dishes that contained vegetables. All of our sauces seemed bland and the vegetables tasted rubbery. To me this means the sauces were pre-made and the vegetables frozen. The staff seemed eager, but speaking a different language to each other. My overall assessment of this place is that the atmosphere is CREEPY and the food was disgusting. I'm still hopeful I'll find a restaurant that creates real Chinese food. Will let you know when I find it.

You will not find better Chinese at a better price in this area. I recommend the Sesame Chicken. YUMMY. I wish they offered brown rice as an alternative to steamed though, even if it meant paying extra.

Love the Peking duck and the banana flambe dessert there. Oh yeah and an egg drop soup. Generally, it is one of the best places in the area.

First take-out order but it will be our last. The food was ready when I got there, no problems at the restaurant. The issue was when I got home. While the food was well-packaged but that was the last of the good. Of the four dishes we got, one was mostly good. One was completely inedible - the crab rangoon hadn't been deep-fried long enough. The dough around the filling was soft, the squished dough at the top was completely hard. Nothing was good crispy; if we'd been at the restaurant I would have returned the dish to the kitchen, we could not eat it at all. As for the rest, completely under par. The mongolian beef pancakes were hard. The lo mein noodles weren't cooked right, they weren't even smoky. The sauces were watery and weak so we tried to boost them with soy and duck sauce they sent along. The duck sauce was mostly corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup, it was sweet and not interesting . A little soy sauce might have helped but sadly, the 'soy' sauce packets they gave us weren't even soy-based. Water, salt, vegetable protein, corn syrup, coloring, sodium benzoate. Where's the soy? Where's the wheat that soy sauce is usually made from. It wasn't even salty! Non-salty soy sauce, WTF? Are they out of their mind? The food was moderately inexpensive and they do have a 10% coupon on their website but I think we'll be looking for another Chinese restaurant.

I've never been disappointed here - the food is always good. Its hard to find a restaurant in this area that offers an old school simple style chinese experience (vs. take out joints). I crave this place when I want chinese. Yes, I have been to the Peking Gourmet a few times, besides the duck, the dishes aren't that great.

Cheng's has been around for ever and I've been there a number of times. It's okay. The food is fairly standard American version of "Chinese" food. The Sunday buffet is big but the same as it has always been. There is really nothing inspired on the buffet. The interior has recently (not sure when). The paint and carpet were updated and look nice. Some of the wall hangings have been replaced or redone. That awful bunch of poor ignored plants is still against a window. Sadly they made it through the transition. The wait staff is the same. They are attentive and quick to refill your water or answer questions. Honestly they are probably the best part of the restaurant. About 2/3's of the way through our meal, I sadly glanced up at the ceiling and at the track lighting fixtures. OMG. They were filthy. They were so filthy that the dirt had build up to a dark mat. It's only a matter of a short time when that stuff starts dropping off and into food or onto the floor. One of the fire sprinklers was so dirty I wondered if it actually worked. The ceiling tiles are dirty, dirty, dirty, dirty. So in the freshly painted place, the ceiling was gross. My only hope is that they have a different person responsible for cleaning in the kitchen than the person responsible for the dining room.

Cheng's Oriental Restaurant has good service but their food varies on the dish and the night. The Peking Duck is at times really tasty and the skin is really crispy as should be but I've also been here when the duck was extremely dry and the skin soggy and fatty. I've had the same experiences with the Da Cheng's Chicken... sometimes good, sometimes bad... seems too much trouble to find out which chef is working which night. There are better Chinese restaurants out there with more consistency.

Ok, maybe its the fact that I have spent a lot of years eating authentic Chinese cuisine. Maybe its the fact that I just moved here from California. But Cheng's authentic??? It's about as authentic Chinese as the boxes of fortune cookies available as you go out the door. Now, don't get me wrong, I think the food is excellent (hence the 5 stars), but this place is more Charlie Chan meets Paula Deen than it is authentic Chinese food. Case in point: iced tea served in mason jars with handles. General Tso (whoever he was) is surely turning over in his grave. We had the General's famous chicken, and it was fantastic, although the portions were a bit on the Paula Deen side. Again, don't misunderstand -- I LOVE Paula. I would adopt her as my momma if I could. It's just I am not used to seeing General Tso's chicken in chunks the size of nerf footballs and covered in sauce that would make any southern grandma proud. The elderly Chinese gentlemen doing table side flambe's is a bit of a stretch from a traditional Chinese restaurant as well, as is the lounge piano player. All-in-all, the food was excellent, and the restaurant very entertaining. We'll go back for the food and for the show.

By far the best chinese food in Loudoun county. Only downside is they don't deliver but excellent sit-down experience.

I have likely been going to Cheng's Oriental(not to be confused with P.F. Changs) since I was born (I have photos from my 3rd birthday at Cheng's) and have never been disappointed. Right when you walk in, you are greeted with a Koi pond with a bridge from the dinig area to the bar. This is not your cheap-but-good "chinese" take-away, this is real chinese food prepared the way your local spot wishes it could. Every dish on the menu is good, but the General Tso's Chicken, Double Delight, Pepper Steak, and Orange Beef are particularly fantastic. To end the meal, Cheng's makes a mean Cherries Jubilee and Bananas Foster tableside! There is also a full bar, and by full, I mean anything you could desire and then some; one of the few resturaunts in the area that stocks Remy Martin Louis XII.

I have only been to Cheng's 2 or 3 times in my life and I'm a native Northern Virginian. I read lots of reviews here and decided to give their Sunday buffet a try. I will use a 10-star rating, 1 being the worst, 10 being the best. Selection: 2 Quality of Food: 7 Waitstaff: 1 Cleanliness: 4 I think that they use their B-Team for Sunday Brunch (Cooks, Wait Staff, etc.) and it shows. I've had better Lo-Mein and Hot/Sour soup at some real "dives". That's my last visit to Cheng's; Everyone at my table had that "let's eat and get out of here" look on their faces. I kept telling myself the food was better than the presentation, but overall I think this places better days have passed it by.

Cheng's needs a Change! Service- Very polite and is always close by. My waitress, Ling, did a good job. And the busboy always made sure my water was filled. Food- Rule of thumb: Wait at least 10mins after you receive your food to eat it. I ordered the Crab Rangoon's as my appetizer and General Tso's Chicken as my entree. Both came out piping hot that it was impossible to eat. When I first bit into the Crab Rangoon's, all I tasted was the cheese, no crab at all. The dough was very bland and hard (almost like biting into a fortune cookie). The Orange/Duck sauce on the other hand was very tasty, gave the Rangoon's some flavor. The Tso's Chicken lacked a lot of taste and flavor as well. All that was evident was a "sugar" taste. I received about 6 pieces of chicken and not even 3 pieces of broccoli. Interior- Paint chipping, holes in wall, the atmosphere reeks of bad taste. The plates and napkins belong in the '80s. It was very annoying to eat and talk while that pond's filter was going. Which leads me to asking why there were two ponds in the floor?! Those Koi are huge and the ponds are too small!!! Overall, I did not finish my food and I will not be coming back.

We have a Christmas Eve tradition: Chinese food and good friends. The group of friends rarely changes; the Chinese restaurant rarely gets a repeat. This year, it was Chengs. We were a party of 10 (four children) . We were seated promptly (7 pm reservation). The service was a bit slow but not in a bad way. We were perfectly happy socializing with our friends and appreciated not feeling rushed. The food was good. I don't think I have ever had truly amazing Chinese food but this was fine. From best to meh: A beef and scallops dish, a shrimp with walnuts dish, a lamb skewers dish, and a pineapple duck dish. Would I return? Not without a reason as its too far from home.

Our family's favorite spot for Chinese food. Treated like family every time you go! Family friendly and quick service for pickup orders. Try the banana flambé! You won't be sorry!

I went there today with a friend in the middle of the afternoon. The indoors are like an oasis from the parking lot. It has a nice koi pond in the middle of the restaurant. We had a nice booth next to the wall of windows. But the windows hadn't been cleaned in a while and canceled the benefit of being next to them. The rest of the restaurant was very dark. Hot tea was provided free when seated. The egg rolls were fresh. My vegetable fried rice was ordinary. My friend ordered a mango mojito that was too heavy with mango. I really don't know why this place has so many high ratings. Do the reviewers have low standards? I know that great Chinese is hard to find in Northern Virginia. P.F. Chang's in Tyson's is the only one that I can recall that deserved many stars. There are some nice places in Chinatown, too. Ever eaten there? I think you guys need more experience.

My group wanted to have lunch here yesterday, but was told that we would have to come back at a later time due to a gas oven repair. We returned to partake in their lunch buffet today (Saturday), but found out that lunch buffets were only offered on Sundays. Our group of 7 (4 adults and 3 children) were seated immediately and were given our glasses of water and a pot of fragrant jasmine tea. After answering our food allergy concerns, our server Yvonne took our order: 2 plates of steamed, then pan-fried pork dumplings (aka gyoza) for the kids Lamb curry (express item, w/c came with fried rice and eggroll) for me Moo goo gai pan (express) for Mom Chicken fried rice for the picky 4-yr. old Shrimp with broccoli for a sis House Lo-mein (shrimp, chicken, beef; fried rice; eggroll) for a sis While we waited for the food to arrive, some of us roamed around the resto and found that 1. the women's restroom was bright and clean; 2. the bar looked well-stocked; 3. there were many beautiful koi (colorful carp that resemble very large goldfish- some are white in color- with most having black and/or brown specks on the tops of their front halves of their bodies; specially-bred species can cost many hundreds, even thousands of dollars) swimming in the large fountain pool located in the front of the restaurant by the host's station); 4. the restaurant's space is very large; can easily fit two hundred people; has beautifully-painted dividers/screens; has large windows that allow ample outdoor lighting and views of the sky and, regrettably, the parking lot. After chatting us up a bit about our home country and hers, Yvonne went to the back to retrieve our food. Out came the dumplings and the eggrolls. I took one bite of a great-looking piece of eggroll to find out it contained *! After dashing to the restroom, I arrived back to the table and it wasn't long before I was served lamb curry. I wish I had taken photos of our food for they were beautifully presented- good portions of rice and meat, and the veggies were fresh and bright in color. There was a mix-up regarding my sis' order of shrimp with broccoli, as the initial dish served was shrimp with mixed veggies. This was quickly amended; however, Mom was quick to point out that the first dish had actually tasted better than the newer dish. Overall, we enjoyed the dishes and even made a special stop back to the house to drop off leftovers, as it seemed shameful not to since everything tasted very good. We asked whether Cheng's sister resto Pacific's (which closed) delightful wok-fried filet mignon entree found its way on Cheng's menu; we were told that the new menu will be in place in a few months' time. I can't wait to come back for a visit so that I can savor that filet mignon and the awesome sea bass with shoyu butter!! Two sisters and I have fond memories of our dinner experience at Pacific's almost two years ago, which included three delicious cocktails (I had the gorgeous luminescent and delightful Blue Hawaiian), three tasty entrees, and a banana flambee for two, the latter prepared at table-side by Mr. Cheng himself! I shall remember that night for many, many years to come! We will have to come back on our next visit to VA and try Cheng's for Sunday buffet, which I'm sure will include many dim sum dishes. Check out Cheng's website as it offers coupons for 10% off dinner and buffets.

Ok, so Pacific, the Asian-infused place across the street, was owned by the original owner of Chengs, Louis. Pacific has now closed, and guess what, Louis is back at Chengs. Even better- the menu at Chengs is exactly the way it was. He hasn't tried to change what us locals love so much. He has, however, added Pacific-ish items as specials to both the appetizer and entree menu. Now, it's the perfect blend of both worlds. They even moved the piano over from Pacific, and it was a nice touch adding background music to the dining experience. Favorites still include- noodles with spicy sauce, chicken lettuce wraps (love it with extra pine nuts), rainbow chicken, and the steamed dumplings. The dumplings and lettuce wraps can make a great meal on their own. Sunday brunch is good as well, but you'll leave overly salted and stuffed. Go easy or you'll feel it later. This place serves parties of 2 just as well as 20, and kids are always welcome.

Cheng's has some pretty decent food. Last night I had some egg rolls (so-so) chicken lo-mein and orange beef. I think the orange beef was among the best and the chicken was very worthy as well. What I find odd is that no one has mentioned LIVE MUSIC! The first Sunday of the month has performance by James Bazen Big Band starting at 6:30PM. To be honest they are really quite good and the food, combined with the "show", simply becomes something over the top. I risk including it only to try and be sure we don't lose it. It should be way more popular than it is. Going back to Cheng's though, I've always been satisfied with the dishes there. The service is tops also.

  • Judith L.

Right when you walk in there's a koi pond, the pond even has a little bridge going over it. The service is consistently good and I usually go with a friend so we can share dishes. I could make a meal of just their appetizers- which I am tempted to do most of the time I'm there. Their chicken dishes are good, always the right balance of flavor. Their lo meins are good, I usually get some of the spicy sauce on the side. A good place for consistently good, enjoyable food. I go here whenever I can and am in the area.

Still a good choice for the area for Chinese. They've repainted the walls and adjusted the decor a little, but the food is the same solid menu that they've had for awhile. Their online ordering process is a tad weird, but still reliable and fast. If you get takeout, the portions tend to be a little smaller for some reason (not enough broccoli in the General Tso's for example)

My husband and I recently dined at Chengs on a busy Saturday night and the place was very crowded (we arrived around 6:30 p.m.). We had not made reservations but only had to wait fifteen minutes. We ordered the steamed pork dumplings which were heavy on the dough though not bad. For the main course we ordered the Sesame Chicken over crispy noodles which was fantastic and a generous portion for two people to share. We also ordered the Beef and Broccoli which was okay but nothing to remember. We've been dining here on and off for years and the service is always great.

I know Chinese food and this place was pretty good. Still "Americanized" but definitely more authentic than I expected. The service was good, too, which is a rare thing I say when I visit Chinese restaurants. There's a koi pond there, too, which my daughter loved. I had to watch her like a hawk b'c I was pretty sure she was going to fall into it. Nicely decorated, good food. I'd love to come back again the next time we visit the area!

Had a nice experience at Cheng'd the other night. My husband and I stopped by for dinner after the cirque Italia show at Dulles Center. The restaurant was large and mostly empty but it was about 10pm and they close at 11pm. I ordered the spicy chicken with basil and it was a huge portion for $11.99 and came with a side of rice. My husband ordered the combination fried rice and liked it although he thought it was a little bland-he enjoyed my dish much better! We ordered egg rolls for our appetizer and while they were greasy, they were pretty good. The waitress was incredibly friendly and filled out drinks up as soon as they were empty. Our food came out super quick, as did the check when we asked for it. I opened my fortune cookie to no fortune and the waitress brought me over another one. Overall we had a good experience here and if I was in the area again I would stop by.

Walked in for lunch. Decor was dated but clean. Bathrooms were slightly hidden near a sectioned off portion of the restaurant. Koi pond was filled but no fish could be found. Water service was prompt but nothing was said and the process seemed some what confusing. We just waked up the Buffett which triggered other guests to do the same. The buffet was small, a couple tables lined up with about 7 different options (salad, meal, dessert. Food seemed fresh and tasted good. However, several chucks of the general tso chicken were not eatable and I had to spit them out into a napkin, fat and bone. A waiter finally made his way over and offered us soup with our already full plates of food. We declined. Hot tea and water were always filled and available. Empty plates were cleared expeditiously. As we exited, we walked by a community bowl of after dinner mints that we joked were probably germ infested. Management was sitting in an office and made no attempt to speak to us as we left. Leaving us feeling unappreciated. In general, there was nothing that stands out about chengs other than its tenure within that shopping center.

Can't believe I have waited this long to upgrade from four to five stars for Cheng's. Have been here regularly during the last 1.5 years and absolutely love it. The Rainbow Chicken is to die for. Especially when you get it hot and fresh in the restaurant so it's especially crispy! The flavor is a perfect blend of spicy schezuan with just a hint of sweet balance. The veggies are plentiful with that dish too. I've tried other dishes, and they're all great, but I just keep coming back to this one. It's a 6-star dish! Also, I'm a big fan of the tofu vegetarian spring rolls. Service is always good, the price is right and the location is easy to get to and always bustling but never crowded.

Proportions are huge! The food is great quality and reasonably priced. My family usually gets a bunch of meals Togo and we make a little buffet. The sesame chicken is my favorite but we get a few other things there. I've been coming to this resteraunt since I was a kid and I hope they always stay in business.

  • Marcy M.

Pay close attention: I give them 5 stars not for their food alone, but for their food + customer service. My go to Chinese dish is always General Tso chicken so of course that is what I ordered. I did not notice the small print that said it comes with dark meat unless otherwise specified. I am not used to dark meat from Chinese places so I was surprised and thought it tasted gross. However, they were SO nice when we called them about it and offered to remake my dish with white meat- no charge. And it was delicious! So the food itself is probably 4 stars but I gave them the extra star for being so nice.

I actually was stuck in the area with a bunch of cousins and we couldn't decide on a place We went in here super hungry and so everything tasted okay, but the serving sizes are really small and they literally give you 6 or 7 prawns per entree. If u really have to come here try their Thai basil and ginger based meats (chicken and shrimp) those actually hit the spot! Nothing to rave about nothing worth mentioning! But they fed us all with love and great quality and we were the last to leave aswell and they were nice about it !

I went here because a colleague wanted to. I've worked across the street from Chengs for 12 years and have never gone in. I don't plan to go again. It's not a 1-star review because if they decided they really wanted to, I would go. I'm not that opposed, but it has no attraction for me. First off, as a vegetarian, there is basically nothing on the lunch buffet. I didn't enquire about their soups, but hot and sour soup often has chicken broth, and these folks didn't look like they would go out of their way to make it vegetarian. Two of the five of us ordered off the menu for lunch. It took a while. Our colleagues were completely done by the time our food arrived. I had the vegetarian mini spring rolls and tofu with vegetables. Both were unremarkable. Just two doors down is Saigon Cafe, where the Vietnamese food is much fresher, tastier, and seems to be made from higher quality ingredients. There are plenty of other places in this same shopping center that I like a lot better. I won't be coming back to Cheng's unless I must.

Food is good but service is horrible! Very common to be seated and no wait staff. Has happened twice - not going back. Such a shame for this place once was a great restaurant.

Their food has the best taste when it comes to all of the other chinese restaurants in the area and for the most part the food is always consistent. It isnt the best restaurant for dining in though, being as they have ancient decorations and the floors and tables always seem dirty to me. The wait staff is pretty rude and it is a little unsettling how the spanish waiters gawk and my mother and me every time we dine in.. Id recommend just getting carry out.

Let me start off by saying that I have been going to this restaurant for 25 years and have always been treated well, until this evening. The restaurant manager (Benny) has zero customer service abilities and he is too arrogant to listen to the customer. We arrived before it got busy and there was one other party ahead of us to be seated. We gave our name to the older gentleman that had greeted us. We were told that it would be about 10 minutes that we would have to wait to be seated. After 15 minutes and people coming in after us were being seated I went up to the desk and attempted to talk to "Benny" saying that it looks like we were passed over. He took great pleasure to say that the other people had reservations. There were 2 groups listed on their reservation sheet for 7:00 PM. The parties were arriving before 7:00 PM and instead of taking care of the party that had been waiting a long time, he did nothing. As he continued to seat more people I went up to the desk again and attempted to explain that our name was never placed on their list since we were the only people there besides the reservation party that needed to be sat. I had requested a booth and we were given the worst table near the kitchen door. Certainly not a booth near the window where the better servers stations are located. At this point the restaurant was at its peak for the evening and it did take a long time for the food to come. This could have all been avoided if this restaurant manager was customer service oriented. To the benefit of the restaurant, the cashier who recognized us as very regular customers, attempted to do everything is her power to help us get served as fast as possible and kept checking in on us. If it was not for her the rating would be a single star. The quality of the food as Cheng's has remained good over the years. It is a favorite of our family. The place could certainly use a refresh and a painting and without a doubt a restaurant manager that is friendly and could have listened long enough to be able to make a wise decision instead of being unfriendly and foolish. This restaurant needs someone at the front desk that can effectively greet the guests and actually be welcoming. Someone with Benny's lack of personality should stay as far behind the scene as possible. He is in a tough business but without the ability to greet the customer and engage with them, he cannot build customer loyalty and can ruin what was supposed to be a nice dinner. I hope that the reader will be aware about Benny and that the owners of Cheng's will consider putting someone with a positive personality in front of the customer.

When we first walked in the place didn't appear very clean. There was dust on wine bottles that looked like they hadn't been touched in ages. The lady's room was out of order. The water and diet coke tasted off. The tea too. We ordered dumplings, spicy wontons and general tsos. The dumplings were ok but the wontons really didn't taste good at all. They weren't spicy and the peanut sauce they were doused in just made them soggy. The general tsos was good in some bites but others very fairly bland. There are a ton of Chinese places in the area and I wouldn't return to this one.

The juice ain't worth the squeeze here. Cheng's may be a staple of Sterling, Virginia, but the quality of their food and care from the staff have dropped considerably since the restaurant's prime in the 1990's. We've gone numerous times for their buffet and menu items over the past couple decades, and these days it's just awful. Their lunch buffet is always cold. Not just warm from sitting out, but cold as if the food came from a fridge. We've made them aware of the issue on numerous occasions, and nothing changes. Today was our absolute last time going for the buffet. When we made the server aware that the food was cold she asked, "Did you get the food from the bottom?" News flash, lady - Food should be hot from top to bottom. Patrons shouldn't have to dig to the bottom of a serving tray just to get hot food. She didn't even make the manager aware, not that this would have mattered as the managers seem to take the same attitude when it comes to correcting problems. No dishes were checked and/or replaced. We've also met this same lack of care from both the servers and managers when it comes to ordering off the menu. On one particular occasion we wanted something with a little spice to it, so we ordered the cashew chicken which had the "spicy" symbol denoted next to it on the menu. When we got the dish and found that it wasn't spicy, we told the server who simply said, "Cashew chicken isn't spicy." No alternative dishes were offered as replacement, nor a comp to the bill. As we were leaving the manger asked how everything was, and we told him about the issue. He simply said, "The menu is wrong." To date this has not been updated in the menu, and that was at least six months ago, if not longer. The sad part about all of this is that when we were driving to the restaurant for the buffet today, we actually considered McDonalds as an alternative. In fact, we even said to each other, "It's just going to be the same old food, and it probably won't even be hot." Sadly, we were right on both counts. How terrible for Cheng's when McDonalds seem like a better alternative. Five to ten years ago I would have happily given Cheng's a four star rating. These days, it's barely worth the two I gave it. Of course, five to ten years ago they also seemed to care about the quality of food they were serving. These days, not so much.

Tonight I had the worst Chinese food I have ever tried. We spent $60 + dollars ($1.50 extra for brown rice) on a meal for the family and ended up not eating most of it. It was our first (and last) time there and we ordered to go. This is a break down on the dishes we ordered: - Broccoli Beef: Mostly broccoli with beef that was not seasoned in any way, not even salt (tasted like dead cow). The weak brown sauce on it did nothing to provide favor. - General Tso Chicken: Fried pieces of unseasoned chicken. You'll do better buying bags of processed chicken nuggets and slathering them in a bottle of brown sauce from the Asian food aisle. - Twice-Cooked Pork - Mediocre at best. - Crab Rangoon - Tiny dollops of "crab" with cream cheese (couldn't taste the crab) wrapped in thick fried dough that was mushy around the cheese and tough on the ends. I have officially given up on finding good Chinese food in the DC metro area. Next time we go out for Chinese, I won't complain about going to Pei Wei.

I came in on a Tuesday night. Only five tables. The server was very attentive. I asked her what she suggested as it was my first time. She said everything and I saw a language barrier. I ordered the Peking duck because it was a house speciality and the pot stickers for an appetizer. The food was very good. I will be returning.

Terrible customer service, food is nothing special, decor dated and worn, on a hot day (95 degrees) the air conditioning was not the best. Today I ordered the General Tso's chicken (you have to pay extra for white meat for several of the chicken dishes) and asked for white meat. The dish they served was batter fried dark/fatty meat in a tasty sauce. I told my server I asked for white meat, and she told me I didn't but my wife backed me up. Without a word or a smile, she took it back and returned later with chunks of white meat that looked nothing like the first General Tso's dish. The chunks were 3x larger and absolutely no batter fried coating, just a light dusting of flour. They wanted to argue with me, telling me "that's how we make it when we use white meat". They removed it without a word. I wanted to order something else, but they never asked and never came near our table again. My wife's Lemon Chicken was good...dry with no vegetables and sauce on the side. Hot and Sour soup was very, very bland without the sour "bite". When the bill came, they had not removed the General Tso's chicken dish and I had to remind them to do so. Overall, I would never recommend this place or return again based on the abysmal service.

The service was good and the food was good. I really liked the steamed dumplings. Their duck sauce was very sweet and reminded me of a berry-ish taste which I thought was interesting. They had a small pond in the restaurant which I thought was cute.

Disappointing. No Tsaos on buffet. Beef too tough so my husband and 3 sons were not able to eat it. Filthy old place; very hurting. We would have been better off if we ordered our own food. After driving about 40 minutes I was expecting at least a clean well lit place. Instead it's like a dungeon. If you want this place order your own.

My husband and I have been looking for a local Chinese food restaurant that doesn't consist mostly of buffet food (buffets really gross us out). Cheng's hit the spot. It was a nice environment, and you could tell the place was full of regulars. Of course, we weren't there for iced tea, but it's worth mentioning, oddly enough. It tastes great and it's served with a small pitcher of simple syrup on the side instead of traditional sugar packets. Great idea! Our food was delicious; we were completely satisfied. We aren't vegan nor are we vegetarian or gluten free (and we'd never expect a restaurant to cater to those needs if we were) so we can pretty much choose from the entire menu. There's plenty from which to choose! If you're a wheat eating carnivore, I totally recommend Cheng's.

I went in around 5:00pm. The place was nearly empty, but it was early; people still commuting, and what not. I've been numerous times, but mostly during lunch. I was pretty disappointed this time around. I ordered an egg roll appetizer and a General Tso's chicken entree (with white meat). The egg rolls were not cooked completely, with some room-temperature shrimp in the middle. The entree was subpar, certainly the worst I've ever had at this particular restaurant. The chicken was overcooked; very dry and tough.

This is my second time to Cheng's. A girl friend introduced me to this place and when she said Chinese food in Sterling, I ended up at P.F. Chang's at Dulles mall and not this place. OOOPS. She meant this little out of the way restaurant. So after I find the place and walk in, I think, YIKES! Old, old decor. But hey, she has taste buds, so lets see. So we order our General Tso's and Mushupork. The food is pretty decent as Chinese food goes in Virginia. While I wasn't excited about their decor which is tired, I was pleasantly surprised to see that their food, portions and price were all about on par with one another. The reason this place got 4 stars though? LOL.... What can I say, I'm a fan of ice cream. For dessert, we had peaches flambé with ice cream. YUMMYNESS!!! Table side and a fun presentation with maybe a little too much fire (especially when you feel the heat.) but it was quite delicious. We were the first to order it that night and you heard people ooohing as they saw us getting the table side order. We noticed that a few others ordered the dessert soon after. lol. I would go here with my hubby sometime, but its a minimum order for 2 on the dessert at $8 a person so not exactly cheap- although I think worth it. Problem is, this man doesn't like fruit...so I'm kinda S.O.L until I can drag another girl friend to go and indulge with me.

Chengs was, and always has been a favorite for my family. Chinese New Year here is fun and this is a very big restaurant. The mixed drinks here are super strong and big! One suffering bastard (enough for two) was all it took. Favorite dishes: anything served inside the pineapple is awesome and their spareribs are huge and a must have. This time I had a slightly spicy hunan chicken with mixed vegetables and sampled the steamed dumplings (enough for an entire meal!). Everything was great as always. They have a 10% off coupon on their website.

I have been going to Chang's for quite a few years now, but less and less over the past two years. The food is better than average "Americanized" Chinese. For the most part, I enjoy the food with a cold beer, and my favorite place to sit is near a window. Beef and shrimp combo is my favorite, and the Chicken Almond is good too. I really have to agree about the decor. It's beyond time for the owners to renovate. A restaurant should be freshened up at least every 5 years, or at least deep cleaned and repairs made. There is a lot of competition with better food around, so they should try and remain competitive. Otherwise, i'd still give it a go every few months or so.

Yes the interior is dated and could use some refreshing, but I come here for the food......the food people. This place is a staple in Sterling and feel free to compare the food to other Chinese joints in the immediate area. None will hang with Cheng's! Also, the cheesy love boat boar and fish pond make for great memories in this establishment. Just dust that old pirate ship and make a few changes but please, don't change the food! Imperial Twin!

Ate here last night before hitting the movie theatre next door. We all splIt a few appetizers and entrees. The food was very good though definitely Americanized (aka prepared a little differently than traditional Chinese). The service was excellent. We had three different people including the manager come by ok utility table to take our order and check on us. The decor here is average - I've definitely seen worse and more cheesy. One thing I really like is that they have a sample display of the specials of the day out on display on a table as you walk in. I'm a visual person so that helped me out a lot when deciding on what to order. P.S. Do not order the mango mousse cake dessert...not very good. Aside from dessert, I will definitely be eating here again.

Cheng's is very popular amongst the local so I was extremely excited to give this place a try. Sadly I was not whisked away by my experience here. They staff is loaded down in every section and look miserable which shows through to the customer when they finally arrive to your table. I was excited to see that they can Peking Duck on the menu. When Peking Duck is done right it is an amazing dish. This was not right. What I got was more like old soggy fried chicken. The other dishes that were order at the table were nice but nothing to rave about. I could have ordered delivery at any old Chinese place and would have been fine.

Of every place in the country, this is my favorite Chinese food. I've been coming here since they opened 20 years ago. And that's no small feat since I live 600 miles away. The inside is typical of a sitdown Chinese restaurant, they even have an indoor coy pond. There is a well stocked bar that you can sit at if you are alone or just prefer to sit there. The menu is the perfect size, large anough to give you a variety but not so large you spend 30 minutes deciding what to eat. The food is well prepared, fantastic presentation on sparkling clean plates. The flavors are independent on each of the dishes. The General Tso's doesn't taste like the Sesame Chicken. To say that the flavors were exploding in my mouth would be an understatement. I recommend the Chinese String Beans, very good! The Sunday brunch is a well kept secret that I am sharing with you all. You can't get a better deal for the buck.

We love Chinese food. Love a great, local place even more. When we first moved to Sterling last year, we tried Chengs because a friend recommended it. Loved it. Food was delicious, plenty of vegetables (not just sauce two limp pieces of broccoli and meat), not swimming in sauce and fantastic. Throughout the year, had decent food. Downside, is it's take out or sit in only. We only get take out. But it's been about 6 months since I last went. When I went this past weekend, the food came out looking weird, covered in sauce. The crispy beef was anything but crispy, with only a few pieces of sad looking peppers. The chicken lomein was lacking both vegetables and looked and tasted like it was just overboiled chicken. Not to mention I felt questionablely queasy afterwards. I'm fairly certain I got food poisoining from my crispy beef. I hope Cheng's gets it together and goes back to the food it was serving last year. I'll hope for the best and try again soon. But they are only getting one more chance before I start looking for a better restaurant.

Price was excellent. The food was meh. The classic warning signs were: 1. No Asian people in the restaurant. 2. Very few people in the restaurant at all, during peak lunch time. 3. I had to ask for chopsticks. The last time they won any awards was nearly 5 years ago, and the bulk of their awards were from the early 90s. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because there really aren't many good places in Sterling.

After 20 Years in the local area I finally decided to try Cheng's. My wife and I decided to try our usual (her General Tso's Chicken) (mine Chicken with Cashew Nuts) and a couple of egg rolls. The parking lot is packed on a Sunday Night usually a good sign. I got the meal to go and with a 10% coupon from their website spent $24.00 for dinner. When I got home My wife opened her General Tso's and noticed it was 50% broccoli and the sweet spicy sauce was brown watery sauce that was not really sweet and the chicken chunks were loaded with fat (no Purdue here). Fortunately when ordering I asked how they made their Chicken with Cashew. Normally it is chicken, cashews and a sweet brown sauce. Unless you tell Cheng's, you will get dish made with celery, sliced carrots, brown sauce and roasted cashews. I ordered it like it should be just chicken, cashews and sweet brown sauce. What I got was a mound of diced chicken (check) roasted cashews (check) watery brown sauce (not check), Oh yes, and a special ingredient shards of Chicken Bones. The egg rolls were greasy and filled with vegetables and shrimp (both cooked so long they had no flavor) the packaged duck sauce could not hide the fact these were tasteless lumps of grease. I waited 20 years to eat there and it will be 20 years before I go back.

In the outer DC suburbs in Northern Virginia, most Chinese restaurants are mediocre at best. This is one of the rare exceptions, and a nice surprise. Nice atmosphere. Nice menu. Very decent food. The hot and sour soup was quite worthy, one of my litmus tests. Very nice spicy seafood.

Do not eat here! They have MSG in their sauces - almost landed at Urgent Care due to horrible reaction from chemicals in food.... manager did not seem to be concerned when I called to share what happened and was not willing to reimburse for meal as 3/4's of meal went in trash. Go somewhere else to enjoy this type of food - stay away for sure !

Excellent Chinese food. We are repeat customers as my husband grew up in the area and introduced me to it and now has me hooked. We usually go for dinner and love the mom & pop feel of it. The owner is usually always there to greet us. Occasionally we'll go for Sunday brunch, which has a great assortment of fresh food for your money. Friendly service too, so overall value for dollar you can't beat this place.

I've been here several times and have not been impressed by the quality of the food. It seems to very un-authentic Chinese food. I just don't get what all the hype is about. The restaurant is very large and good for family gatherings, but the food is just OK. There weren't any dishes that really stood out for me. Go to the new Golden King restaurant down the street that just opened. Although a much smaller place it serves some authentic Chinese food out west!

It was my first time at Cheng's restaurant. My friends recommended it. I ordered Mongolian Lamb with Pancake. It was cold chewy and pancakes were very cold. It was awful but we went with our friends who they love that place I didn't want to say anything. My jaw is still hurting. I complained about the food at the end of our meal becuase I wanted them know how this dish was. The waitress was annoyed and didn't even listen to me. O well I'm never going to go that place again.

Wow, I am really surprised by the bad reviews. Cheng's is in my opinion by far one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area. I've been going here since I was a little girl as well. They know my family by name and everyone who works there is so nice. Agree they could stand to make some renovations and some of the seating is ripped up, etc. So, I don't disagree with that assessment. My favorite dishes are the Hunan Shrimp, Lotus Rice, Crispy Beef, and the shrimp and scallops in garlic sauce. Yum. Going there tonight and I cannot wait :-).

This is a pretty decent Chinese food place, at least as good as one can get in suburban Virginia. The three times I've been there(with my mother or sister; they live in Sterling, I live in Fairfax) service has always been prompt, the facilities clean, and the food tasty. It seems to be pretty busy in the evenings, but we've never had to wait too long. The staff rapidly and efficiently clears tables to when a group finishes their meal.

I don't often go to Cheng's but when I do it's always a pleasant experience. The waitstaff is friendly and hasn't changed in years, so they recognize the regular patrons and ask if they'll be having the "usual" or if they will be having something else. The decor isn't lavish or plush . . . in fact it's quite the opposite. There is a coy pond near the entrance of the restaurant. The coy are HUGE. Children seem to find great amusement feeding and watching them. There is also a pianist that plays nightly. And inevitably, there always seems to be someone in the house to which the pianist serenades. The food is good and the portion sizes are ample. I generally have the crispy spring rolls, beef on a stick (beef satay), combination lo mein. For dessert, you hafta get the flambe. They have banana, cherry and peach . . . and I my preference. It's prepared at your table and the "swoosh" of the big blue flame always brings out the ahhhhhs and ohhhhhs and applause from the surrounding tables.

How long does it take to get a check I'm trying to go to Moe's to smoke some hookah geeez people get it together... Had dinner here with a group of 8 people we order 12 dishes and shared everything. The general tso chicken, cashew chicken, crab ragoon, and spring rolls were not eatable gross and greasy. The service is way too slow it take forever to get anything...The plus side I really enjoyed the garlic shrimp and scallop dish, and the chicken lo mein... The real big disappointment is they don't have oolong tea it's my favorite at chinese restaurants..

I have been a regular at Cheng's for at least 15 years, and I have never been disappointed. I can honestly say that I have had almost every dish on their menu. Some of my favorites are the Rainbow Chicken, and the Crispy Shrimp with Walnut . Don't forget the Banana Flambe' for dessert. Solid Service, and portion sizes. This has always been my go to spot for Chinese food.

Best Chinese restuarant around. The egg drop soup is fantastic as well as our favorite Seafood and sizzling rice. Also the foo foo drinks are to die for. I've been going for at least 10 years and plan on going another...

For the last 20 years we have been regulars and Chengs and loved it each time we have been. We have never gotten any thing we didn't like although often we will get the same things over and over knowing that we love them. I love the Hot and Sour soup as a starter and don't miss out on the Egg Rolls they are never too greasy and always come out really hot straight from the kitchen. The hot mustard is really hot, just the way I like it. The beef with broccoli is great for the kids and I absolutely love the house special fried rice it is loaded which huge shrimp and chicken and beef. But let's not forget the lemon chicken, another favorite with the kids. Their nightly specials are always something very special and absolutely wonderful. I lover their dishes that include some type of fish, they are all well worth a try. But without a doubt the best part of the experience is the service. Maybe it is that we have been going there for so long, but I feel we know the entire wait staff. There has been little or no turn over in staff over the years and they are very attentive and friendly. They know your likes and dislikes and area always just too happy to please. Definitely worth making it a night out. The atmosphere is fairly casual but is as is the case in many places the older crowd does dress a little better than the younger crowed and the latter in the evening it gets the better people dress. They do take reservations and on weekend in the late evening I would recommend them or the wait can get rather long.

And I wasted my money again. We used to be regulars here but about a year or so ago, the quality and portion sizes really started to diminish. Today is the last straw. I ordered take out and it is inedible. I called to let them know and they were rather rude (and I was actually being polite). Fortunately, there are other good chinese restaurants in the area!
