Parking is lacking but if school is not in session you can park in their parking lot across the street. Great yeast donuts with multiple choices that seem to vary by the day. If you are looking for the same donut each visit, good luck! We haven't found them yet! But don't worry, they have always had interesting choices available and we have yet to be unhappy with our options! Wonderful flavors and very friendly, helpful staff make it a great stop when we are in Richmond!

Best doughnuts I've ever had in my life! I can't ever look at Krispy Kreme doughnuts the same way I did before having Sugar Shack. The doughnuts at Sugar Shack are always fresh and so tasty! It's just the right amount of icing/glaze and doughnut. I love the Samoa, Sprinkles, and M&M. My friends are huge fans of the Maple Bacon.

My mom is from a little town not far from Richmond. When we pulled up, she said "I don't know, ever since Bill's pastry closed years ago I haven't found a good donut." We get a half dozen, one of which is her favorite: blueberry cake. She takes one bite and says through a mouthful of donut, "I've never had a real donut until now." Go, you will not regret it.

I love The Shack. I have to workout extra hard to counter the calories I consume from The Shack. They're good all the time, but extra delicious when they're just made and still warm, which is practically all of the time because they sell as soon as they're made! They still haven't labeled the doughnuts, and probably never will, but they have improved the service. Just know what you're getting yourself into when you go. This place is always packed. So good luck getting a parking spot, and plan on waiting a bit in line. Service isn't slow, the customers pondering their selection are. Again, it wouldn't be that way if the doughnuts were labeled. P.S. New Sugar Shack opening soon at 12th and Main!

I went to Sugar Shack for the first time today. I was a little overwhelmed with how long the line was, it was halfway in the front parking lot! But that shows how everyone enjoys their unique donuts. Once I was in the door, I liked the variety of donuts they offered- I ordered the maple and bacon donut, the pumpkin spice donut, and 2 Carmel m&m donuts. My husband and I enjoyed them all! When I come back, I'll make sure to arrive earlier to beat the line!

Favorite donut shop in RVA! A couple of my favorites: Samoa, Lemony Poppyseed, Maple Bacon, & Blueberry cake. Like them on fb! They have cute challenges and if you come into the store and do it, they'll give you a donut for free! On busy hours, they often don't restock on certain donuts.. Even though you see them sitting on the rack straight from the kitchen. Just double check and see if they have the donut that you want anyway! They will not let you exchange a donut if they had already (and just) placed it in the box!

Not only are they delicious, they're creative too! Donuts are light and fluffy! A bag of donut holes is a thing of beauty, especially when they're fresh and it's cold out. Be sure to get the cereal topped donuts when they're pretty fresh, otherwise the cereal gets a little soggy. The salted caramel and the caramel drizzled with chocolate and covered in coconut are both to die for! Wish the bacon was crispier, but that's a personal preference--the flavor is SPOT ON. The staff is friendly, the coffee is hot (and delicious!), and the donuts are so yummy and fun! Don't bother with other places in town. This is THE destination donut shop!

I love the citrus glazed cinnamon rolls, they should be signature but they hardly ever have them. Service is great, selection is generally meh. Cold dripped coffee is incredible albeit over priced.

  • Chelsey P.

Donuts...mmmm. There wasn't a line when I went there on a weekend, so maybe I just got lucky? The donuts were so very good, and the coffee was also decent. The staff was very helpful and patient, but there needs to be more seating areas!

My cousin brought me here against my will! Seriously! She wouldn't let me out of the car! Augh. "I'm getting you a donut," she says to me, "and you will eat it!" Uh, okay... Dang it. The place looks small but cozy. We walked in and right then a long line formed behind us. Well, glad we got there in time. She picked out the maple bacon one, two Oreo donuts, two originals, one pumpkin spice and a couple others I don't remember. I tried the pumpkin one and I wasn't impressed. Didn't want to shove in more calories, so didn't take a bite out of the Oreo one. Looked good, but hmm... Their donuts are alright but they're way too big and thick for me. I will probably just stick to krispy kreme. The employees were nice and got down our orders quick. Oh and defiantly "check in" here so you get a free donut.

All the donuts were delicious, but the cinnamon roll really stood out. It was by far the best cinnamon roll I've ever had. Not too dense like so many are, and it wasn't overly cinnamon-y. The Generra (a cinnamon mocha with orange peel) was amazing. Not too sweet and heavy like so many mochas, and the orange peel gave it a really nice aroma. I wish I didn't live across the country from this place!

In town for the marathon and heard we had to stop in before heading back to NC. Amazing doughnuts and friendly staff. We hope you open a Winston-Salem location soon!!! Truly a wonderful experience. Virginia is for doughnut lovers.

Best, best donuts I've ever eaten! We went at night and were afraid the donuts would be old, but not the case at all. They were still very fresh and yummy. We also purchased a bag of Zeke's Tell Tale Dark roast coffee and we are now a huge fan of that coffee company. *the only thing I didn't like was that the person helping us was not really customer friendly. We didn't know the names of the donuts since it was out first time so we were just pointing them out, she was not too happy and seemed annoyed. Not taking it personal, and we will go back!

This literal "shack" at the corner of Lombardy and Leigh, across from Maggie Walker, is a place where all New Year's resolutions go to die and the inner food munsters come to life. Variety and uniqueness is what makes Sugar Shack a hopping area regardless of the lack of sitting or parking space. Not much to add except to leave your calorie-counting books at home. Donuts are less than $2 for special/regular donuts. The selections are infinite as they keep coming up with new flavors and combos. Feel free to donate a suggestion on their chalkboard. I'm waiting for the day my earl grey strawberry donut suggestion comes to life...drool.... *For Yelpies, check-in for a free regular donut. Recs: 1. Crispy bacon atop delectable maple syrup slathered over lightly fried donuts. 2. For the vegetarians, sweet and perfectly tasting strawberry icing atop fluffy donuts. Heard the blueberry one is bomb-diggity. 3. Anything else that looks good.

5 star not enough !!! One of a kind of experience !!! My favorite was peanuts doughnut !!! Every doughnut was so perfect and more important sugar so enough not to much .... Everything homemade , all the glaze with berries smashed in the kitchen :-) I mean everything made right in front of your eyes ...

  • Sun J.

OMG this place is so cute! the donuts look so artsy and are decorated very nicely, maybe that's why they're on the expensive side? i love the simple, yet "wild" flavors; they know how to create a variety of flavors while staying within the chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and maple zones. their seasonal pumpkin donut with caramel glaze was so good. their Samoas make me happy. the maple bacon was perfect, tasted like breakfast in one bite. i will definitely come back! be sure to look up their store hours! also, parking is a little hectic when they're busy. i also tried an iced latte and the coffee is good, i just wish the latte wasn't so creamy. i think the quality of the milk was good, but maybe balance it with the espresso better.

  • Brian B.

I don't understand what all of the fuss is about with this place. They make ONE kind of donut and cover it with different things... and charge $1 for the donut. Nothing special here. Move along.

    (2)
  • Brian L.

Pretty good donuts. Love that they pushed the envelope to make specialty ones, not just the run of the mill ones you'll find at a Krispy Kreme or Dunkin'. Pro tip - the Samoa does not disappoint and is pretty darn close to the actual thing.

    (4)
  • Anne R.

We tried Sugar Shack for the first time today. They were out of most of the donuts people have mentioned on here. We tried the roasted coconut over vanilla, peach cream, blueberry cake, blueberry cheescake, cinnamon roll and some combo of chocolate caramel icing with chocolate chips. The consensus was that they were all ok, nothing special. I've had fresher and tastier donuts from Dunkin' Donuts. The business itself was super cute and very Richmond!! Staff were friendly. Biggest suggestion to you: Do NOT park in the lot behind the Shack. We got towed after being inside for all of 5 minutes. Cost us $125!!! (FYI I added this suggestion in hopes that others can learn from my error)

  • Judy R.

BEST DONUTS EVER!!! I am just happy that it is a bit of a drive for us to go. Otherwise we'd be there every weekend. The Maple Bacon donuts are divine, we've had their Cinnamon Buns, Oreo, Cider Glaze with local apple cider. I love that they use local ingredients!! They are HUGE donuts and just melt in your mouth. I usually eat at least 2 or 3 before I even hit the freeway. Parking lot IS really small but if you circle around the block and come back, usually something opens up.

    (5)
  • Suzanne R.

Great doughnuts, no question. I still don't understand why they insist on avoiding labeling the doughnuts. There is always a very long line and having to tell each customer what the flavored are just makes the wait that much longer.

  • Jen K.

2nd visit, same ad the first, Awesome! We LOVE this place!! All of the donuts are of the chain. We'll be back again soon!

    (5)
  • Chris A.

Amazing, amazing, amazing donuts. So glad they opened a location in Alexandria. The strawberry frosted is by far my favorite, but try to get the maple frosted with Lee's fried chicken on top. Also, the blueberry cake is a winner. There's no set menu - they make a variety throughout the day with no apparent order - so be wiling to try something new. Chances are you'll love it.

I lived in Richmond years ago and finally made a trip back to the old stompin' grounds to visit some friends. Sugar Shack was on my short list of "must go here immediately" (which also included Mamma Zu. Check and check). My husband and I ordered a donut each and a couple to take with for the friends we were staying with. While at the shop, I had the strawberry glaze and the hubs had the caramel glaze with chocolate chips. Oh. My. Good. God. Usually fruit glaze is a bright color with some sort of flavoring. Not here! There is pureed strawberry goodness slathered all over the top of the warm, fluffy, delicious donut. The caramel topping was also a party in my mouth, and the tiny chocolate chips were a little melty which was awesome. I am not really a donut fanatic and only eat maybe 2-3 a year because the calories just aren't worth it to me, but if I still lived in Richmond I'd be at Sugar Shack weekly. The coffee was also spectacular - great, rich flavor without being acidic. All in all, this place completely lives up to the hype.

I finally stopped by Sugar Shack today after weeks of my husband coming home from work raving about them. The donuts were really tasty and fresh. The selection wasn't huge but I found something I enjoyed. Using labels wouldn't be a bad thing.

Awesome selection of creative flavors- Beautiful interior at new Parham location!

    (5)
  • Tiffany N.

Delish! Seriously thought that a box of 12 would't be about $14 or so... along with adding specialty donuts in there.. but low and behold! I got so many beautiful donuts that I think I got diabetes just looking at them. Customer service is really nice as well; I guess that's why the line was so long! Try the caramel one :) just kidding.. try all of them. But not at the same time.

So delicious, their flavors are so fun, and their coffee is the best. Love popping in on Saturday mornings and picking up donuts and a cafe au lait. Super hipster, and their staff is so friendly.

If there's a line, wait. You won't regret this decision. Just wait.

  • Colleen N.

Sugar shack donuts are the epitome of light and fluffy. I've shamefully tried almost every flavor and whenever they announce a new one on facebook, it's a safe bet that I'll make a trip that day. Nevertheless, the maple bacon has reigned top dog for quite a while now.

Awesome Awesome AWESOME donuts & pastries. I no longer live in RVa, but damn, do I still crave 'em.

  • Sarah T.

They make a good donut. When we arrived mid-day on a Sunday the line was out the door, the smell of donuts wafting into the parking lot. I know I may be in the minority, but donuts are one of my all time favorite foods, and I don't have a lot of patience for the trend of 'who can pile the most outlandish stuff on a donut' trend. If you have good dough you don't need all the fluff, literally or figuratively. I tend to use Boston Cream as a test donut, and I'm going to leave at least a little disappointed if you don't offer them. All that to say, your donuts are delicious on their own, no need to hide them under all that icing and candy. Docking the 5th star for pandering to the topping trend.

Ended up at the Sugar Shack as just about everywhere else in Richmond was closed for Labor Day. Thank goodness that was the case. Donuts rotate based on what sells out and what replaces it is always what you want next. If you take a 5 year old be prepared to say no at some point.

Was excited to try this local business. Im in town on vacation from California, so I had lots of fun local food to try. The parking lot was completely packed. Walked in and there were a bunch of younger tattooed guys working there, maybe not everyone in this town is a vegan lol. The guy working the donut station was super nice and explained all the different types to me and my mother. My mother is a huge dork and likes to tell strangers that I'm in town on vacation and that I've never been there. They all smiled and amused her and her silly questions. They had bottled yoohoo chocolate soda and I almost got one. We ended up ordering 2 glazed, 2 maple bacon, a sugar donut, a local brewery's stout donut and the largest Apple fritter I've ever seen. I also purchased a very soft red tshirt. It was very cute and I love that kind of stuff. You pay in cash or card and then sign and iPad to get the total. Very fancy for a little shack. Always tip! Always! The iPad has an option to tip on it. Very convenient. We left and got home to eat the donuts. Unfortunately I ate them too fast. Like way too fast. So good. I checked in when I got home and saw the free donut with check in thing. I missed out. Can't wait to come back! Will try and eat them slower.

  • Anne S.

I went in right around opening and got a warm strawberry glazed. It was phenomenal! I've also had oreo, samoa, and traditional glazed. I'd give the strawberry 5 stars and the rest 4 stars. The rest would probably be 5 stars when warm. Definitely check them out! Really cute inside, but no sitting room.

Sweet donut spot. Cozy & fast service from friendly staff. Good selection and I dig the butterfinger donuts. Adventurous ownership willing to try out recipes & go for what the people want!

Great place. Quick and fast service. Kyle is great helped us find parking and the right donuts. I had the chicken and maple which was tooo die for. Wish I bought more. Since I am from NOVA I will check out the Alexandria location soon.

Undoubtedly the best doughnuts in Richmond. Our favourite is the blueberry, but you can't go wrong with whatever flavour you decide to try.

  • Xiti A.

BEST donuts in Richmond hands down. Come here way too often! Their variety of flavors ins mind blowing, the staff is friendly, I do wish there were sitting places, but nevertheless, I love it! RECOMMEND 100%!!

  • Anna C.

The base donut is pretty good and something I would eat without all the delicious toppings. The toppings put it over the top. I can't have more than one, though. They are definitely jam packed with sugar.

  • Caroline H.

I'll cut right to the chase: they are so good. My two friends and I came in here a few weeks ago on a rainy Sunday morning to order some lattes and a dozen dones (is "dones" a cool donut nickname? I'm trying to be cool here, please excuse.) We are hip, attractive 20 something ladies (ok - full confession- we were hungover) but the sugar shackers were def not trying to exchange snapchats or Instagram handles ifyaknowhatimean (I'm saying they weren't super friendly.) but no matter! We are hip, we get it! I'm an out-of-tower and needed my shacker to explain what all the flavs were bc there were no signs? (#confused amirite?) but no matter these dones are worth the bones!! (....sorry....) The lattes were good and the donuts were omg so worth it once we got back to our abode ( I ate at least 4). So yeah, go here. But I think they could step it up with signage so I didn't feel like such a Les Incompetents.

One of the best donut shops I've been to hands down. I was expecting this place to be overrated, but to my surprise, I actually enjoy it. The donuts although have probably sat in the case for a while, tasted pretty fresh and fluffy. I absolutely loved the apple flavored one. The location is nice and had a decent sized parking lot which is a win! The shop could have used maybe a table or two, but other than that it was pretty spacious. The staff we're knowledgable and were nice enough to explain all the flavors since it was our first time here. Tip: If you check in on yelp, you'll get a free donut!

Good, fresh quality donuts. You can taste the unhealthiness with the toppings but so worth it and so good.

    (5)
  • Joy P.

I'm not a black coffee kind of gal, but this coffee did not need any cream or sugar.. awesome! The donuts are a little too sweet imo (I don't have much of a sweet tooth though). And the chicken and maple donut totally weirded me out (Yes, I did try it!). Service was really fast and everyone was nice :).

    (4)
  • Rob M.

Sugar Shack is an abundance of flavors and experiences. This isn't the place to come for a boring glazed donut. The flavors rotate pretty much daily and the crowd never leaves.

    (5)
  • Jacqueline R.

The donuts are excellent ALL of the time. When they are sold out of my favorites (strawberry or chocolate) I can always count on what is available for good taste.

    (5)
  • Marshamallow P.

My sweet tooth is always satisfied with their delicious donuts! Anything you get will be sure to please. I love how inventive they are with their flavors. I've been meaning to try their Lee's Chicken donut so that's on my list!

  • Micah C.

Nice thick, doughy donuts. Go for gold here, the more intricate the donut the better it likely is.

    (4)

Good doughnuts. Many flavor combinations - sometimes overwhelming (as in too sweet/cloying). But overall, nice independent doughnut shop. Kind of hipster-y.

This really is as good as it gets! Voted Top 10 by USA Today and well deserved. I am so glad to see the outpouring of support for these guys by other reasonable Richmonders. Reading some of the negative reviews below make me loose a little faith in humanity. Psh....some people. I could go on and on about all of their fantastic attributes: light, fluffy dough, creative toppings, overall product perfect in almost every way - but if you've read some of the other reviews, you already know all this. I'm here to address those who may not have tried Sugar Shack before and may have some unrealistic expectations set by donut giants like Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts. 1. If you go in the morning or on the weekend, expect a wait. And maybe even that they're sold out. If you check out their facebook page (which they do a really great job of updating frequently) or give them a call, it will give you an idea of availability. You can also always pre-order 24 hours in advance. 2. Expect a line. Like, always. But trust me; it is absolutely worth the wait. 3. Don't park in the gravel lot behind the building, you will be towed. If the lot out front is full (which it often is), there is a lot across the street that you are able to park in. Or find street parking. 4. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Please keep in mind that all of these donuts are 100% handmade. They are mixed from scratch, cooked, and iced all by hand. This process takes time. Understand that these people care about their craft and it shows in their product. There is a lot of hard work that goes into making just 1 batch, not to mention the countless batches that fly out the door daily. 5. They do not use any preservative in their donuts. That means if you buy one on a Tuesday and decide not to eat it until Wednesday or Thursday, it will not taste as fresh. The conglomerate chains use preservatives in their batter, which keep the product fresher, longer. But ultimately, isn't a more natural product better? And who wants to leave one of these delicious donuts around for more than a few minutes after you've purchased them anyway?? 6. If you walk in the shop on a special occasion, i.e. National Donut Day, SSD Anniversaries, Mother's Day, etc. EXPECT THAT THEY MAY BE OUT OF DONUTS! Again, they make these goodies by hand. These people are not machines and should not be expected to act as such to meet the unreasonable demands of people that are used to the generic, overly sugared mess that KK and DD sell. If that's what you're looking for, go there. Please. Don't crowd the door and prevent people that love and support this establishment from purchasing this wonderful product. And then keep your idiotic, unrealistic, selfish, and rude comments and reviews about the wait and/or unavailability to yourself. There....I feel much better. I think I'll treat myself to my favorite - a Samoa donut now. :-)

There is no better sweet than donuts and Sugar Shack makes the best donuts in the world. We drive 30 minutes, squeeze our huge SUV into the tiny lot but the service is great. They use great technology so no paper when using your credit card. The donuts are huge, light, and taste amazing. My kids love the M&Ms, I love the chocolate and my husband likes to try whatever crazy flavor in the case. If you can, pick up a pizza size donut for a party! My kids went crazy when they saw the giant chocolate donut covered in M&Ms!

  • Amanda P.

Best doughnuts in Richmond. If you're looking for an awesome local business, that has a quality product, this is the place. Sugar Shack is consistently crowded, which is a good thing (meaning the food is clearly awesome), be prepared to park in their lot or along Lombardy/side streets and enjoy your wait (it's worth it). The maple bacon donut is crazy good, the strawberry glazed anything is great as well. They have a substantial variety of desserts daily, and the staff is knowledgable and sweet. The stamped boxes they come in couldn't be cuter. The doughnuts can stand some time, so if you don't eat them right away, they can hold up in the box for a couple days. The doughnuts aren't too sweet and you definitely won't be disappointed with their product.

I always wanted to try this donut shop and one day I decided to try them out. Parking at this location is very limited and make sure you don't park in the lot behind the shop. You will get towed! Once we did find parking, we waited in line that snaked out the door. They don't have names for the donuts but all you have to do is ask and the order taker will call them out to you. Pay close attention cause she goes very fast. They have a nice selection of different flavors to choose from. I could barely wait to get into the car before I took a bite of my donut! It was like eating a cloud!!! I wouldn't go all the time due to the price, but it's a nice treat for a special occasion.

  • Matt E.

I've been here a bunch recently and it's always a treat. Special recommendations include the maple bacon donut and anything strawberry frosted - if you're like me and you grew up on most store-bought donuts, you'll be shocked that they actually taste like strawberries. A word of warning; the cake donuts are incredibly dense and rich. Plan on splitting with a friend or saving half of it for later.

    (5)
  • Tyrell C.

I've been going to sugar shack since the day they opened. The donuts are AMAZING!!!!! You might need donuts anonymous. The maple bacon is my favorite its like breakfast all you need is a side of eggs.

  • Kee B.

So, I went in a couple of months ago, and literally stood there about 10 minutes as the gentleman in front of me in all of his sexy blue button down with a white collar glory asked the same question about the same damn donut on repeat. I thought I was gonna be a fucking skeleton before I got my donut! That leads me into my point: They don't mind explaining what's in the case or helping out if you need a bit of help deciding. I have nothing but respect for this place. They take no nonsense, treat their workers well, and always seem to have some type of delicious prize in store for their customers. They truly enjoy what they do, and the donuts reflect that.

Looking for awesome yeast-style donuts that are not only ginormous in size but also delightfully delicious and fabulously fluffy?! Sugar Shack has got you covered! Their donuts fly off the shelves and the flavors change by the hour but that's what makes this place so awesome - there is ALWAYS something new to try! I've only sampled a few flavors but I really enjoyed the coffee-flavored donut and the vanilla-glazed donut studded with mini M&M's - the warmth of the donut softens the M&M's ever-so-slightly that it just melts in your mouth (not in your hand, haha!). Small cons: 1. parking lot is tiny and pretty terrible but there is a fast turnover so you'll eventually get a spot 2.no labels for the donuts in the display case. I understand the flavors rotate around-the-clock but they should consider getting labels that they can easily change out, it's annoying for customers (and the employees, I'm sure) to always ask which flavors are being offered. Very reasonably priced donuts, good coffee, quick service, and unique (without being too wacky) flavors - what more could you want from a donut shop?

Update! This review was written when they first opened, but am seeing now it was delayed in posting. I have become a huge fan of sugar shack! Their donuts are so yummy! I have also contracted them for a few of my brides as wedding dessert favors or as desserts for corporate events and they have always been very accommodating! 5 stars!

SOOOOO GOOOOOD!!! That is really all I can say about this diamond in the rough! You might drive up and not think you're going to find the best donuts on Earth inside, but you will! I went today for the first time and I WILL be returning soon! The service was quick and the associates were very nice. Also, their coffee is amazing! It make the 20 minute drive home worth it! Thank you Sugar Shack for gracing Richmond with your presence!

Worth the wait!!! Not just a hipster place to be seen, it's an actual great donut shop with awesome coffee. I'm a purist so the chocolate and glazed were my go to and they don't disappoint. A definite must have is the maple bacon which was spectacular. Be prepared to wait in the elements but u won't regret it.

After reading all the reviews here on Yelp, I *had* to swing on by the Sugar Shack on a Saturday morning-- it's been on my 'To Do' list for weeks now. Okay, so we make the 20 minute trek over to Lombardy, and easily find a parking spot. Plenty of parking on a Saturday morning-- excellent. We waltz in, and it the decor totally sells me immediately. It's trendy, it's classic, it's 40's all over again. Love it. I step up to the counter and proceed to order the orange rolls, the maple bacon donuts, samoa donuts, Pay Day donut and a few sprinkles and chocolate donuts. T The guy at the counter is super friendly, super down-to-earth, and all is great, swell, terrific. When I pay for my donuts that come to around $17 for a dozen donuts, I pay up via an iPad. Oh, yes. Technology. Brownie points for everyone. So, I've got my donuts, and I'm ready to totally dive in, but wait. Where are the tables? Okay, fine, no tables. How about some chairs? Surely there are chairs, right?! Uhhhh, no. Okay, how about a bench? Uhhh, think again. No table, no chair, no bench. Nothing. All that is there is a little shelf attached to the wall that a family of about 5 is standing around awkwardly trying to eat and look comfortable. I felt awkward for them. No. Just no. So, my experience comes crashing down, and I take my little brown box and we set out for a Starbuck's. The donuts were really great, though! But, dammit, I want to enjoy my donuts IN my 40's-lovin' joint. I don't want to enjoy these suckers in a Starbucks. So, bottom line, the donuts are lovely, the decor is excellent, the staff is uber cool, the technology is awesome, but for the love of all that is good and wonderful, invest in some patio tables and chairs and hook us up with some seating. It's imperative.

Definitely a fan of the Sugar Shack. Picked up an assorted half dozen recently and each was pure yeasty sugary goodness. The selection wasn't huge but was varied enough. We also got there a little late in the morning so they may have been out of some flavors. Love the customers' flavor idea board and hope to try some of those flavors in the future.

If you need a sweet fix, this is the place! At VCU there's often a box hidden away, the doctors there got me started on a Sugar shack . I can only have a half donut at a time, the sugar force is very heavy! Try the maple bacon

Amazing donuts, consistent between the locations. Flavors change so much they don't label them. Maple bacon is a must try.

Sugar shack has THE BEST donuts. Period. And you get a free house donut when you first check in on yelp!

Sugar Shack has made having to go to work 100 times better. I brought them in for a client meeting and they were a hit. The unique variety they offer allows those who are more adventurous something tasty for their pallet or those who prefer the basics a fluffy delicious doughnut all the same. I definitely recommend it!

    O. M. G. Seriously. O. M. G. Sugar Shack has taken something simple -- a doughnut -- and made it a true delicacy! I adore their light, fluffy yeast doughnuts, definitely prefer them over the much heavier cake style, and then Sugar Shack tops them with some of the best things in the world. Some of our personal favorites are Samoa (caramel icing, toasted coconut, chocolate drizzle), Maple Bacon (maple icing with bacon pieces), and just about ALL of their cereal varieties (Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Captain Crunch, etc). If only we knew in advance when they would have our favorites...but more on that in a bit. The beautiful part about what Sugar Shack does is find the perfect balance of pastry to toppings such that the doughnuts are both sweet and flavorful without being nauseatingly sugary. They also have done some really cool things with SAVORY doughnuts as well (think longjohn doughnut split and stuffed with scrambled eggs, cheese, and bacon or sausage). The fare here is absolutely amazing; I highly recommend it! The food itself EASILY gets 5 Stars, but there are a few annoyances that detract a star for me: 1) The menu is, seemingly, a whim. They do not have a pre-set standard menu of what they make on each day (or at least one that they publish), so it is a bit of a crapshoot as to what you are going to get each time you go. They have gotten a little better about this (on a daily basis) now that they have a strong Facebook following, but it's still a pain if you live across town like I do. I'm all for unfettered creativity, but I'd like to see a more structured menu. 2) Parking is terrible. And that is being generous. I figure, at best, they can get 5 cars in their lot and, in most cases -- weekends in particular -- any hope of getting one of those 5 spots is a longshot at best. To add insult to injury, both adjacent lots are apparently actively towed. They could really benefit from taking over the adjacent lot -- or at least borrow it. 3) Location, location, location. I'm sure that the VCU hipsters LOVE how close the beloved Sugar Shack is to them, but it's a bit of a hike for anyone in the 'burbs. I'd love to see them open another location outside of the Fan/Downtown/Shockoe corridor. Pretty please! Hint, Hint. Please?

Delicious. My wife and I got a dozen donuts, plus two for free for a special giveaway that day. I would definitely go back

Great donuts, inventive flavors, fabulous location. I sometimes have to actively take the long way home to avoid the temptation for a maple bacon donut.

So good! Nice fluffy donuts with delicious flavors! The samoas and maple bacon are my favorite. The staff is super friendly as well. I'll be coming back many a times, for sure!

Not much to say that hasn't been said about these heavenly pillows. I allow myself one indulgence per month as a reward for finding the willpower to abstain the other 29/30 days.

Oh my, this place is amazing! My fave was cinnamon/sugar. Honey lavender latte was right up there with donuts. Worth the effort & wait in line!!

Bought four donuts around noonish and ate them when I got home later, around 6pm. Still fresh! I had the maple bacon and salted caramel. Plenty of maple frosting, which was good. Salted caramel was pretty good too. Hubby had the strawberry frosting with sprinkles and regular chocolate topping. Nothing special about the chocolate. The strawberry was so yummy. Tasted like strawberry ice cream. So good! Yes, the donuts are kinda big and eating two will really fill you up! Over all, very good donuts but still doesn't beat our favorite donut place, which has special thick chocolate frosting and filled donuts. The guy at the counter was very polite and gave great customer service! It was my first time there and he pointed out all the available flavors.

  • Alisa O.

Delicious sugary pieces of heaven. The strawberry icing is surprisingly not artificial tasting (not an easy feat), and the array of toppings offered make my eyes very happy indeed. Coconut, chocolate chips, reese's pieces, rainbow sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles, chocolate icing, glaze, caramel. Half the joy is in just staring at all the options before you decide. Good luck in convincing yourself to just get one!

I love you! I would marry you if you were a person... You would hold me tight in the warm fluffy hug that only a donut could give! Bacon on my maple donut with real bacon and not bacon bits (like some other donut shop in town that shouldn't see the "light of day"... yes please! A perfect sea salt and caramel smothered delight with out being so sickly sweet? you know me so well! Your Butterfinger clad pastries could even allow me to see past the semi ok coffee. Alas I'm afraid our marriage would be short lived as Wilfred Brimley would knock on my door, espousing "Diabeetus!" But I would die happy!

Sugary goodness! Can you say diabetes? Who can say no to chocolate glazed donuts sprinkles with mini m&m's or crumbled health bars? Strawberry glazed with Oreo crumble, anyone? Chocolate with orange zing? Deliciousness! Just make sure you go with friends as self restraint and so you can share and try multiple Flavors

Just wish the Lee Chicken Donut was offered more!~

  • Alex W.

Interesting flavors, but the donuts were a bit too dense, as I prefer lighter donut innards. But overall, not bad. Definitely worth a stop if in the area. If you don't eat them that day/night, microwave for 5-10 seconds max before eating. Also, avoid the hipster behind the counter. He comes off as pretentious and couldn't wait to get you out of there fast enough. The woman was much nicer.

    (3)
  • Brittany H.

The Samoa and blueberry cake are definitely my go to's but my absolutely favorite is the apple fritter! Too bad they only have it in the mornings. It should definitely be a regular part of their selection

I just moved to Richmond and this has been the best donut shop I have ever been to. There are lots of flavors and the staff really care about you and their product. They have a fun Facebook presence that's worth being plugged into (They will post a way for you to get a free donut almost everyday on their page) and love engaging with their community. For example they are actively trying to get The Foo Fighters to play at Richmond and are looking to give away concert tickets if they do. I love the creativity they put into their donuts too like the most recent fried chicken donut. Would recommend you call ahead and ask what they currently have In stock if you are looking for a specific flavor as their selection is almost never the same. Only thing Sugar Shack could do to be better is to start being a place that people can hang out (tables, chairs, etc.) but I understand the current limitations of parking and space. In summation, Sugar Shack isn't just a quality donut shop, it's a positive instrument of change in the Richmond community from what I have seen so far

    (5)
  • Leannda M.

These donuts are hands down the best donuts ever! Always soft and fluffy and never greasy. So many different toppings (my favorites are the chocolate with m&ms or oreos). It's been almost a weekly stop since I have been in Richmond

    (5)
  • Jim J.

The best donuts I have ever eaten. We ordered the glazed, caramel with chocolate, and chocolate frosted donuts. All three were consumed within minutes. It's disappointing that I'm heading back home to New Jersey, I'll now know what I'm missing out on. :(

  • Audra N.

We finally decided to give these donuts a try last weekend and I'm so glad we did. They're absolutely incredible! The salted caramel was my personal favorite, and the red velvet got rave reviews. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth the stop.

Nice sized donuts. Not sure if they are the best I've tasted. There are many variety to choose from at good prices. Still in search for a good donut other than Krispy Creme.

  • Denise A.

Awesome donuts! The tallest unfilled donuts i've ever seen, so tall and thick i thought maybe they we're filed... until my mom says, they have a hole how can they be filled! Oops my bad mom! I tried the maple glazed and the butterfinger, and my mom tried the heath bar and a milk and white chocolate stripped donuts. All were awesome, a Krispy Kreme type of chew, but imagine eating 2 Krispy Kreme at one time. The donuts were nicely decorated. And i did like that they sell beverages (coffee, tea) as well. I was blinded by the donut case, but i think they have a few places were you can sit and eat if you choose.

We stopped here again. This time on a road trip to Philly. Past experience told us that the potential wait would be well worth the half hour detour. Normally this place has a line at least to the door, if not out the door. Today, during the holiday break, we were surprised by no line, and lots of tasty treats to choose from- even the maple bacon that sometimes is limited. The staff was helpful and friendly. Everyone is welcome although the place - a small, hole-in-the-wall shack (literally) - seems particularly attractive to a hipster crowd. The donuts are fantastic. Some of the best I've ever tasted, and not just a replica of some chain rolled in the disguise of a cool setting. They taste homemade in a good way. These donuts are very very good on their own, but the team has really designed some creative and delicious combinations. Irresistible. Stop by for a donut or a very good cup of coffee, even if it is miles out of your way.

    (5)

AWESOME coffee and donuts! The donuts melt in your mouth like an out of body experience. Small parking area (5 cars), so park a short distance and walk. It will be worth the wait :)

  • Josh B.

The donuts here are really delicious, and for a cute little donut shop with such a perfectly chosen name, that should be enough! This little Sugar Shack is located at a convenient corner behind the Kroger near the Carver neighborhood. The shop is really cute inside, albeit small, and decorated well. The staff has always been very friendly and more than willing to answer questions about the daily choice of donuts. One of my favorite things is that they do have a small parking lot to make dropping in for donuts to go very easy. My other favorite thing is the slow drip cold coffee. That alone is reason to make a stop in to visit them. It's great to have another yummy donuts spot in Richmond and everyone should certainly give these guys a try.

I've been anxious to try this place to see what the hype was about and since theirs a new one near my office I figured I'd give it a go! I'm a believer! The blueberry donut and the cinnamon roll were heavenly! The atmosphere was cool too. I shall return!!

Simple and good. Or go elaborate. Also good. Don't skip the maple and bacon.

their donuts are super fun. Not the best donut, but the toppings totally make up for it. And their coffee is my favorite in Richmond. Bummer the downtown store front closed :/

    (3)

The donuts are pretty good, but the place is overrun by hipsters. The Treat Shop has better donuts, more selections, and greatest of all, no hipsters!

  • Gloria P.

After hearing so many good reviews about this place, I had to go visit. I'm not much of a sweet eater but the interesting flavors drew me in. There were a bunch to choose from and you're sure to find one you like. My favorite was the Samoa! I wish they would label their doughnuts so I don't have to ask about each one. I'll be back to try the coffee and the other flavors!

  • Kiera R.

This place is basically the Aladdin of pastries in this city: total diamond in the rough. Their facebook is constantly offering an exchange of fun tasks for a delicious gift of a house donut. The staff is helpful and friendly and also give praise for dance moves. My #1 stop for donuts. Please never leave me.

    (4)
  • Lauren N.

What I like about this place is that they don't just have the average/usual donut. Their creations are creative and unique (but they also have the original favorites for all you plain janes). And most importantly TASTY. They could only be better if they were served hot (like a couple donut places in va beach I've been to ). The biggest room for improvement I see is simplifying the ordering/pricing process and adding some seats. Their customer service is great though!

    (4)
  • Brian H.

These donuts are the Chron McDon. Staff is very friendly and the donuts are better than Krispy Kreme!

PAPA'S FINAL VERDICT: papa likey.

Amazing donuts!!! These are easily some of the best donuts I've ever had. My boyfriend & I will get them on Friday & they'll still taste amazing 24 hours later. So many unique flavors & really well made.

    (5)
  • Kathy I.

They have all kinds of crazy donuts, including ones with BACON! It sounds crazy but it's pretty good! This place is way better than Krispy Kreme :) and it's super cute!

    (5)
  • Raymond B.

The best raised-style donuts I've ever had. Fresh, chewy, dense yet soft, these donuts are amazing. Their creative toppings add that extra oomph to every unique donut flavor (even if their coloring choices on their toppings are a bit over the top/tacky and toppings themselves look like they've been applied roughly). Tad expensive compared to big-box stores, but my goodness they can take my money any day. That good. Overwhelming champion over Dixie Donuts (cake style) and Country Style Donuts (raised), which are both excellent, but don't match Sugar Shack's undeniable freshness.

What ... a bacon donut, samoa, popcorn, raspberry puree, what an eclectic collection of savory treats. Welcome to the Sugar Shack! Located across from VA Union Univ. this place sits on the corner; a gray building nestled in the neighborhood. When walking in its a chic coffee bar meets rustic loft with a scene of donut treats. The place is clean, neatly sprinkled with gnomes hiding secrets of sugar sweets. I was in awe of the variety of donut options they have quite a bit of options for you to try. I ended up getting the Samoa donut and maple bacon. The result was like biting into a cloud of deliciousness! I found myself can I put these on the floor and dance around in excitement? I also ordered a coconut latte as well which was great. The downside was that the service was nice, but coulduse a pinch more of a welcoming ... I was overwhelmed when ordering and didn't know what kind of treats they offered, and in styles of donuts. Also, they didn't have their tshirts in large only small & medium's. Also they gave you no napkins in the bag. All in all, a great way to end the afternoon or sneak a quick drop by before work. Just know that they close by 4 pm so make it a much needed stop!

  • Angela L.

Some of the more interesting and different flavors had already sold out once I arrived at noon. But none the less the ones I tried were amazing. I got 2 chocolate caramel glazed, a Nutella crunch and a strawberry Nutella glazed. The donut itself is really soft and the glazes are thick. I did have a worker come out and describe the types of donuts they had. But even after being told the types I still had to point. So a typed out name in the glass would be helpful. If she didn't come out to describe them I wouldn't have chosen some that I did. I believe they sell gluten free donuts on Sunday which my sister was excited to try as she is allergic to wheat. So an extra star for serving gluten free. I hope to try Sugar Shack again soon.

  • Ahmed A.

Some of the best donuts out there! Even the simple sugar ones are just off the chain.

    (5)
  • Kathleen S.

Love their coffee and their donuts are awesome. It is annoying that none of the donuts are labeled, but none of the workers have been rude about telling which flavors are which. The parking lot is small, and they are serious when they say that if you park in the lot next door you will be towed. Better to look for parking on the street!

  • Monty S.

The most incredible donuts in the city of Richmond, VA! They are so creative and delicious!

Literally the best doughnuts ever! I make sure to come at least once when I visit Richmond. I drive from Chesterfield each time. Never had a problem with customer service Never had a problem finding something I like. I get a half of dozen to take home with me. Love love love!

    (5)
  • Matt M.

These yeast donuts rival Country Style's. I got a half dozen - chocolate cake, chocolate glazed, Butterfinger, cinnamon sugar (2x), and Oreo. The cake was just okay, but the rest were outstanding. I especially enjoyed the one topped with crushed Butterfinger. The cinnamon sugar dusted ones could probably use a little more cinnamon sugar. I didn't have any coffee, so can't speak to that. I went on a weekday on my lunch break and didn't have to wait in line. I can see how parking could be difficult if the place was packed. The staff was very friendly. Sugar Shack is a great and much closer alternative to Country Style.

    (4)
  • Amya M.

Sugar Shack is amazing. There is nothing I have tried that I didn't love. Everyone there is super sweet and welcoming. The only downfall is the parking. But that itself is a plus, I make it a point to stop by if the lot is empty (which is rare) that way I keep from over indulging!

    (5)
  • Kara W.

BEST......DONUTS......EVER!! I don't know how they make them, but they are so fluffy and cake-like. They just melt in your mouth and the fact that they are made to order makes them warm and so good. Love, love, love them!

    (5)
  • Jana B.

Great donuts, really good donuts... but if you're eating here, it probably just means you haven't tried Country Style Donuts (by the airport) or Dixie Donuts (Carytown) in Richmond. Now those are donuts that make me excited to wake up in the morning.

    (3)
  • Kirby R.

I'm usually only a fan of glazed donuts. I had been meaning to try Sugar Shack for a while. The zebra donuts were delicious, but the favorite for me was the cinnamon drizzled with vanilla. Nice and soft. Almost melting into my mouth.

  • Brad M.

This place isn't too far off the interstate exit I take to work so I figured it was time to visit. I park, walk in, and am greeted with this marvelous display of scrumptious looking donuts. But I'm on a mission. I want bacon. And I want it on top of a donut with gooey sugar and saturated fat. I want my death to come in the form of pieces of tasty dead pig on round deep fried flour. So the maple bacon donut gets ordered. And yes. YES! It was great. Better than great. The bacon was not skimpy. In fact the bacon was top quality and mixed with the maple coating...oh yeah. I'll definitely be going back. The only caveat is it was a little pricey, but I deem it worth it.

    (4)
  • Janice G.

What can I say....love them. not too sweet, not too heavy, not too airy....just right.

    (5)
  • Brian S.

The donuts are some of the best I've ever had, but the coffee is consistently wreak. I'd give it 5 stars if their coffee wasn't so flavorless. I don't know if its the roast, or they just don't use enough grinds when they make their batches of drip coffee. I'm trying to be constructively critical. Perhaps no one has told them that their coffee sucks.

    (3)
  • Ayimah A.

the best doughnuts i have ever had. the end. my favorites are the samoa and the plain. yummers!!

    (5)
  • Jason M.

Best donuts I've ever eaten. Possibly Richmond's best homegrown franchise -- and that includes Sweet Frog. Unfortunately, they can barely keep the counters stocked. Go early and often if you want to see all they have to offer. Looking forward to the Chesterfield expansion.

    (5)
  • Erin K.

Only tried the funfetti cake donut because cake donuts are my favorite. At first bite I thought it was too greasy and a little too salty but enjoyed the rest of it. Was certainly greasier than other cake donuts I've had. All other varieties were plain yeast with various toppings and I prefer donut places to have more options for the actual donut flavor. My friend got the maple bacon and said the bacon was soggy but she enjoyed the Samoa.

    (3)
  • Darin L.

Really good donuts!! Different toppings and flavors. Everything is done well. I have been here several times and the quality is always very good. The line is always a little slow, but worth the wait.

    (4)
  • Denise K.

I've been to Sugar Shack a couple times already and it has never disappointed yet. The Samoa donut is so good and it reminds me of the girl scout cookies. I have also tried the caramel with M&Ms and vanilla with oreo. These donuts are best for those with a sweet tooth, but for those that prefer salty snacks like me, these donuts are still just as satisfying. The service is also great too. I asked them about the flavors and they were great at telling me what each donut was, and there is a lot. Also, you can get a free donut when you check in for the first time. This doesn't apply to all the donuts though such as the maple bacon one, but they still apply to most of them. I can't wait to come back again and try the other flavors I haven't tried yet!

  • Mackenzie R.

THE PLACE: Limited space, get your donuts and coffee and sit outside or head out. THE PEOPLE: Friendly enough. THE FOOD: Great donuts. Solid variety.

    (4)
  • Kyle C.

Very good donuts. Make sure you read the three-step ordering process posted at the back of the store. The process is not apparent for first-timers, so some orientation is needed. There are not any options you can go wrong with. Ask about what flavors are happening. Cute little donut stand with good coffee. Better than average donuts made fresh.

  • Lindsay T.

This is one review that doesn't need a lot of detail. Just go to Sugar Shack and thank me later. But seriously, these have got to be the best donuts I have ever had in my life. They are huge, but not overly dense. Their flavors are amazing, and change all the time. My favorites have been the Cinnamon Sugar (simple but seriously amazing), the Somoa (or the toasted coconut which is similar to the Somoa without the chocolate), and Maple Bacon (I die, seriously). I also love when they throw in a special, like the Lee's Chicken. Its like a portable Chicken and Waffles! I have to agree with the other Yelpers, though, that signs regarding what each donut is would be helpful. I understand that the flavors change throughout the day, so maybe signs in front of the trays aren't possible, but maybe a sign above the display to list everything available that day would work.

  • Shiori S.

I happened to try Sugar Shack when they were offering free house donut when you order in third person. So automatically I appreciated their sense of humor and ability to engage with the community. When you walk in, it pretty much screams hipster which I can appreciate. However, they do not have names or descriptions of the donuts as they want customers to ask in person. I think that's a great way to engage the workers with its customers and to build positive relationships! So Shiori ended up ordering the "Hot Mess" donut which consisted of everything bad for you but it was so worth it! In fact, I'm still thinking about it. When I went in around 5:30pm, people were still in and out of the location which I found it surprising for a donut shop. All in all, I'm excited to go try other flavors and to participate more in fun activities that have enticed me to walk in :)

I LOVE SUGAR SHACK AND YOU WILL TOO!!! This is pretty much the only thing I miss since graduating from VCU and moving away. I would come at least 4 times a week. The donuts are so fresh and moist, and the rotating flavors are well thought out and amazing. The staff is ways friendly and very eager to help and explain the flavors that they have that day, which I'm sure gets pretty redundant, but they never seem to mind. I'm so glad by brother still lives in Richmond because I always have an "excuse" to go visit.

    (5)
  • Daniel K.

The flavor of the donuts are amazing; however, I felt that the flavor and bite of the actually dough was lacking or rather just mediocre. I do believe that their unique flavors do extremely make up for this rather disappointing dough but, nevertheless, recommend for parties, office gatherings, or just to cry yourself to sleep on a friday night.

    (4)
  • Vanessa L.

Definitely worth a visit! The place is clean, and the staff is friendly and patient. i think they understand that their donuts are flavorful works of art and customers need time for intense decision making before investing. Sugar Shack donuts are amazing. And...Gaaah....maple bacon flavored donuts.

    (5)
  • Chad S.

This place is just freaking awesome... What can I say. Constantly rotating variety of doughnuts... Tuesday is Filled doughnut day. Custom doughnuts for special occasions, great coffee (btw, medium roast is most flavorful even for a dark-roast fan)

    (5)
  • Ching H.

Ya slay me everytime. The different flavor combinations, the yeast-y goodness...that probably doesn't sound right, but sometimes being wrong feels so right! These bad boys are large and in charge, if you check in on yelp you get 1 free house donut, which sweetens the visit =) Honestly, I've had many good donuts here, and I have to say I think I love the strawberry cheesecake, the sea salt cheesecake, the espresso, and the glazed. I'm always excited to come here, let me tell you though, these donuts will slow you down and put you into food coma, at least it gives me a really good sugar rush and then all of a sudden I want to pass out...but that might be a personal problem...ahem. Stare at these donuts, take pictures with them, bc they will surely be your new BFF"s. P.S.- for some reason this parking lot is really dangerous, both times I have been here my friends have almost gotten run over. Something about these donuts just causes driving impairment! So walk carefully and be aware of your surroundings. ;) Half kidding/half serious about this!

The Samoa donut.... So freaking delicious!!! Not too sweet surprisingly! The blueberry donut omg the texture.. So freaking good! So moist! The others I tried were okay too but sweetness overload.. I couldn't eat them all. Maple bacon donut, the Apple pie.. They were okay. That Samoa and blueberry though... Yum!

This place is yeast heaven. If you love donuts this is a place that you cannot pass. When I was here I sampled the glazed and famous maple glazed with bacon. Ah, so deliciously devilish. With generosity Sugar Shack has a offer of 1 free house donut for that you may unlock on your first visit. Other options include tea, hot chocolate and coffee. Oh, how could I forget my beloved apple fritters! They are as big as your head so share accordingly. Sugar shack lives up to its name.

Donuts are huge! 1/2 is definitely enough. Great variety, there's something for everyone!

Always have fresh donuts and there is always a new flavor to try every time I go in. The staff is very friendly and efficient and always patiently explains the new donuts or any questions. My personal favorite is the Samoa- this is a MUST for anyone who is visiting RVA.

Crack donuts. A must stop if in the area. We had the girl scout cookie one and even after leaving it out on the counter, it was still soft and delicious. They don't have signs for their donuts so the guy at the counter explains it to you. The parking lot does get a little hectic so be careful when going and coming.

The most OVERRATED doughnut I've ever had. No flavor, lacks real taste. All doughnuts are yeast and none are cake. Dunkin Donuts are 10x better.

Hubby ran in yesterday to grab some donuts for us because we wanted to find out what the hype was all about. He said the customer service was good. We got 2 original glazed, 1 samoa, and 1 maple bacon. Prices are very reasonable and I was actually surprised as to how cheap they were! I ate the maple bacon one and I thought the bacon pieces were quite too big and it was all in the center of the donut. I like it better when they're cut up into smaller pieces. It was good but you can tell they didn't taste as fresh.. guess I'm spoiled by going to krispy kreme and always getting the fresh batch or by my hubby making them at home.. It is definitely worth a try and I'll probably go back to try other flavors.

I love how sugar shack gives away free donuts for interesting challenges - such as drawing a crazy image or wearing something specific. It's very creative and brings in more customers and a fan base. My first two times here I was following challenge prompts, my third time here I was just craving a glazed donut. Sugar shack definitely has the best donuts in RVA and also anywhere - I've never had a better donut.

  • Jacob K.

It's okay, I don't really get the hype though. Donuts in RVA right now are the FroYo/ Cupcake crazes of a couple of years ago. Country Style is still a simpler and better tasting product. Or for that matter get a sourdough donut from Mrs. Yoder's at the South of the James Market, SOOOOO Good.

Unique, delicious, and addicitive. I try to only stop by once a month but it's worth it!

The best donuts I've ever had hands down. Even though they're fairly large, I could probably finish several in one sitting - they're that good. (Though I would not recommend that anyone perform such a feat unless you have dangerously low blood sugar and a great metabolism!) There are a variety of flavors that change from day to day, and every flavor is good! I especially love the strawberry, salted caramel, chai, and anything with sprinkles! I can barely order JUST one whenever I go (and I'm afraid the employees might have started recognizing me there.) I always tell people I know from out of town to stop by Sugar Shack. I'd choose these donuts over a hot body any day.

I've had Lee's General chicken, maple, glazed and a few others. All very good. If you're craving a cake style donut, this place will fit the bill quite nicely.

They never disappoint. I wish I could bring this place with me when I leave RVA. My 2 faves are the blueberry cake & expresso doughnut.

Follow them on Facebook pronto! Each day they post something you can do for a free house donut, and a house donut is any donut with one topping which was a nice surprise since I went in thinking house donut meant glazed only. In addition to the free donuts, we decided to order 2 specialty coffees. We tried to order a Generra, their signature Cinnamon Mocha with Fresh Orange Peel but unfortunately they were out of orange peel. We opted for a honey lavender latte and their latte flavor of the day, something with amaretto and coconut, instead and they did not disappoint. We had to wait a bit for our coffees, but it was a lazy Saturday so we didn't mind. I had had Sugar Shack donuts multiple times at my office, but my first visit to the establishment was a sweet success.

Not only did I get a free donut with a third person ordering. The place is clean well kept. The donuts taste fresh and have a pleura of interesting flavor a, don't be sky to ask they don't have signs of what the donuts are (one of the only set backs, but inspires customers to inquire) great and a lovely experience.

My only concern is that parking is limited and stuff isn't labeled, but the donuts are awesome! My dad owned an Italian bakery growing up in the Northeast so I like to think I know a thing or two about what a real donut should taste like. Sugar Shack does an awesome job with their donuts and variety of flavors. I would highly recommend ordering a dozen random donuts and trying flavors you might not usually try. They always find a way to make it work no matter how off the beaten path.

A Richmond gem. I go here on special occasions (e.g., birthdays, anniversaries, etc.). They have your classic glazed to butterfinger donuts. Their staff are fun and quick too! The donut selection changes every 15 minutes so be sure to visit this place if you are from out of town and want to try something special.

  • Erin J.

Generally speaking I can pass on donuts, my kryptonite is a warm cookie; however the donuts at the Shack are tasty! I appreciate changing flavors and fun Twitter promotions. The coffee is excellent! While the lines can be long it's always worth the wait.

We stopped by Sugar Shack an hour before its closing time on a weekday. We tried the following 5 donuts: Oreo cookies Coconut Chocolate Glazed Pecan (I think?) Their website is under construction. So there wasn't a way to find what flavors they offer beforehand. Also, they seem to change the selection every 15 minutes or so. If you have a specific flavor in mind, you might not be able to get it. With that in mind, if you are prepared to try just about anything - go for it. You might just be pleased. All of the donuts tasted fresh and soft. They are huge, so we only got a taste out of each. Honestly, I like them enough to recommend them, but I've had better ones. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to end up at the Sugar Shack. But if you're in the area, you could give them a try.

Wait.... have I really not reviewed this place yet?? Sorry my bad, must've fallen into a sugar-induced coma post donut consumption. After every visit. Over the past year. Yeah. Chronic sugar comas - It's a thing, look it up. Anyways, much has already been said about the wondrous-ness of Sugar Shack, so I'll try to keep it brief. The good: If heaven had donuts, they'd be like these donuts. My faves include but are not limited to the maple bacon, maple iced, strawberry iced, butterfinger and vanilla icing, and just plain ol' regular glazed. Regular glazed and maple iced are my first two choices at any donut place, and a pretty standard way for me to gauge the delish factor of the donuts at said donut place. A+ here. Maple bacon usually isn't my thing (something about sweet + meat I can't get on board with...) but I tried it b/c Yelpers rave about it - sure enough, WOW. The bad: The parking lot = the Hunger Games. Seriously that is the tiniest strip of concrete to ever earn the name parking lot. Luckily, you can't really loiter here (more of a grab and go, though I did see a bench for sitting) so if all of the 5-6 spots are taken, you won't be waiting too long. Maneuvering in and out is a bit annoying, so be careful! Also, some of the donuts are a little too sweet for my taste, but what can you really expect from a DONUT place with SUGAR in the name?? Just stick to regular glaze if you don't have much of a sweet tooth. A little pricy for donuts as well, but I think worth it because the donuts are soliddd and also larger than your usual donut from say Krispy Kreme (which I still love, don't get me wrong). Ooh and the coffee's good too! They don't advertise it as much but some people really rave about the coffee here. I can't wait for their new West End location to open this year!!

My love for donuts has grown exponentially with age. I have not been in Richmond in nearly 10 years and yesterday got to feed this sweet, sweet habit. Mmmmhmmm! Might have been the end of the day but what did that matter when they bake fresh like every 15 minutes. After getting a recommendation from a tired and weary but still-with-it donut barista, got a cinnamon sugar and a samoa. Never have I eaten two donuts more quickly. Albeit these were yeast donuts and therefore not as filling as the cake variety, they were nonetheless quintessentially scrumptious: good size, texture, sweetness. Not a lot of space in store or in the parking lot but get to here however you can, then make a break with your bag-o-donuts!

  • Audri W.

The staff are super friendly and helpful which just made our first experience so much more delightful. The donuts are also superb; light, fluffy, and delicious as all donuts should be! Highly recommend to anyone and everyone. I will be coming back.

I first visited Sugar Shack when they were first starting out and it was great then. My following visits have gotten progressively better. They've definitely refined their craft to a T and customer service hasn't tanked a single bit. The salted caramel donut and samoa are my favs. They also have several pumpkin varieties for the fall! They run awesome promotions every single day. Check their facebook. They give you a mini challenge and if you do it, you get a free house donut (which is pretty much any donut there, minus the bigger speciality ones)! You also get a free house donut if you check in to yelp. The only thing I still don't like is that god blessed parking lot.

Sugar shack is an apt name - WOWza sweet but great and filling donuts. Wasn't stoked for the mix of flavors for the first trip and you risk a side on collision if you need to take a left out of the lot... but I'll reroute myself to avoid it and certainly keep checking back for new flavors! The line organization could use some help/just having a clear menu displayed of the options will help folks be prepared to order. I went the first few weeks they were open so perhaps this has been corrected. Thanks for moving southside!

  • Rachel I.

Do they lace these donuts with illegal substances? Because, damn, these donuts are addictive. The strawberry iced are probably the best I've had. I did like the maple bacon and heath bar donuts too. Let's be real honest here...I haven't tried one donut from Sugar Shack that I didn't like. Check them out for donut cravings!

  • Bailey R.

BETTER THAN KRISPY KREME!!!! I didn't think it was possible! I went to Richmond to visit some friends before they made their trip to NY and they took me and my boyfriend to Sugar Shack. The line was out the door! I was like ok they might be alright. NO! Best donuts I've ever had... Crack!!! You will be addicted to them like you're on crack! So now if one of us has to go to Richmond we always bring back a box. That's how good they are. So far my favorite is the one with vanilla and caramel.

  • Lena F.

Soooo good !!! I love kk but I usually have to warm them up occasionally to get that airy softness (I love my donuts warm, soft and not too sugary) I was definitely surprised when I poked the donut and realized how soft it was lol. I got the Samoa and mannnnn!!!!!! So good!! You won't regret it. Not too sweet just right

  • Abby S.

I came here planning to just try one donut, but the variety of flavors was too tempting to pass up! My friend and I tried the samoa, maple bacon, espresso, chai, and blueberry cake donuts. The yeast donuts are differentiated only by the glaze and toppings, which are spot on. The donut itself is super soft and fluffy, especially if you eat it right away! The blueberry cake donut was also amazing - a lot of cake donuts can feel heavy, but this one still felt really light. There aren't any labels in the display case, since they bring in fresh donuts every 15 minutes. The employees there are all super nice and willing to help you identify each donut, though! They also have solid coffee options - I opted for the iced coffee with a pump of sugar free hazelnut syrup, and my friend got the con leche, which was really milky and sweet. No seats/tables inside, so take them to go and enjoy them quickly :)

Sugar Shack is every sweet tooth's heaven on Earth and every dentist's worst nightmare. They have a wide selection of flavor to choose from which changes daily. My favorite is the Samoa donut which is one of their most popular ones so if you go in the evenings they're often sold out. Being a religious coffee drinker my other favorite has to be the espresso flavored donut. I've also tried the Butterfinger and the Oreo flavors. Butterfinger was a little too sweet even for a sweet tooth like me, but both of these donuts were generously topped off with real candy and cookie pieces. I agree with other reviews that these donuts need to be labeled!! Would help out the customers and the workers too since they won't have to answer questions every 5 seconds.

  • Brian C.

I caved and tried them. Finally. Woah. I get what all the hype is about. They've got so many different and interesting flavors, you should give them all a go. The donuts lasted for about two days until they got hard...so don't try to save them. They had over a dozen different flavors when I was there - ranging from solid favorites to creatively inspired. The only one I didn't love was the bacon one...it was just too strong. But I wouldn't be surprised if someone in your group loved them. They're expensive for donuts, but not for the quality of donuts they sell. They're a completely fair price.

  • Mary E.

This place always has a line out the door. They have so many crazy types of donuts to choose from it is fun to hear what they have each day. They have 'normal' kinds as well but they aren't displayed and you have to special request them. I don't love donuts, but I have gone back to just get the experience again.

I'm a vegan now, so I haven't eaten a Sugar Shack donut since my conversion. But, if I were to break veganism, this place would be the reason why! I am not exaggerating - these are the best donuts I've ever had. And donuts and are my favorite treat! They've also got so many flavors and often do specials where you can get a free house donut - all you have to do is check their social media accounts. I recommend the Samoa donut, maple bacon donut (I am a vegan and the past carnivorous self that remains in me sometimes craves this - it's awful I know), strawberry donut, oreo donut, and chai donut. But, recommendations aside, everything here is delicious. You really can't go wrong with any of the flavors! I heard rumors of them making a vegan donut but I'm not sure if it's going to happen any time soon. I have high hopes that they do though!

Unclear how this place ranks just #7 in the country. It ranks #1 in my VERY experienced book. Just phenomenal artistry in donut/pastry making. Want to make friends at work? Bring them Sugar Shack. (Now take the B52's hit and replace "Love" with "Sugar."). In the case of the rock stars that own this spot, the two aforementioned terms are uniquely synonymous within the context of that song.

We were visiting Richmond for the weekend to celebrate my husband's birthday. Decided to give this place a try, and we are glad we did! The donuts are so soft and fresh! We tried the Samoa, Maple Bacon, Angry Orchard, and strawberry chocolate. They were all incredible! Great spot!

  • Bianca S.

Its a rinky dink looking little shop from the outside with a tiny parking lot, but the donuts are good. They offer a creative variety, bacon maple being popular. But they make different stuff different days I think and only ha maybe 4 flavors available when i went. Need more consistent/wider selection but worth a try.

    (3)
  • Steve D.

Overall really good, service is really friendly and quick - Coffee great, some donuts are just "wrong" like the margarita donut - that one went in the trash! Speaking of trash, they really need to do something about that really really bad smell where their dumpster is - walking pass their parking lot- it makes you wanna turn away. You guys need to do something about that smell. But i do love this place! Yum for donuts!

  • Teresa L.

such a cute little donut/coffee shop! they have some very innovative flavors..I tried the cinnamon sugar, Samoa and funfetti. The cinnamon sugar and Samoa donuts were fluffy and airy. I expected the Samoa one to be more chocolatey like the Girl Scout cookie from which the donut was inspired. My favorite was by far the funfetti donut. It's more dense and sweeter. I wish they had the flavors posted somewhere inside the shop but instead I had to ask one of the workers for all the flavors that were available. I would definitely come back for more donuts :)

    (4)
  • Mary S.

Their donuts are like a croissant and a donut had a baby that was blessed by Zeus and Jesus and the Flying Spaghetti monster... ridiculous. Light and airy with a slightly crispy shell. I usually get the classic chocolate-iced and it is so darn satisfying. Their coffee is good, but I would love to see a local roaster's name in there. Nevertheless, I have eaten so many of their donuts and they always make my tummy and taste buds feel like they're on Cloud 9.

    (5)
  • Lisa N.

Definitely a must stop by donut shop if you are new to Richmond and debating on which donut shop to stop by! Their selection is vast and you will surely find one that suits your taste bud! I don't remember all the flavored but the employee is very welcoming by explaining to you what they got and what is in each donut! One small downside was the employee that checked us out! She was getting irritated with us for picking out the donuts we want and that I felt was unnecessary, since a lot of customers that come in could have been there for the 1st time and did not know all of the donuts they carry. Overall, a spot for all the sweet-tooth people out there!

Tried a caramel one for the first time... It was HUGE first of all.. But also tasted so good i had to break my diet to have it. It was well worth every bite.

This seemingly unassuming little shack is packed with such tasty little treats. It was also packed with people and a line out the door. Although it was so busy, the staff is so efficient (and helpful) we got thru the line in just a few minutes. I tried the blueberry cake donut and tried my friend's maple donut. Both were uh-may-zing! They were super sweet without being too overwhelming and the donut itself was nice and fluffy. I had a huge meal beforehand and couldn't finish my donut, but it made for a perfect late night snack. :)

This place is definitely Richmond best kept secret. Quite possibly the best "doughnut" I've ever had. I'm using passive aggressive squinty face air quotes around "doughnuts" because what they sell here aren't really doughnuts, but rather circle shaped glazed cake. This isn't a bad thing. What sugar shack serves is FREAKING delicious, it just isn't the jelly filled, office breakroom thing I'm used to. I had the hyr\brid blueberry red velvet glazed cake which was light and airy with a crunchy but delicate glaze. Amazing flavor that tasted like flintstones fruity pebbles. The regular glazed doughnut was fluffy and not oily or heavy at all, which keeps you from feeling like a guilty fatass. Other things that add to the amazingness factor are the quality of the coffees, the super helpful staff, and affordable prices. Make sure you use the yelp check-offer for a free doughnut! This pace would be ten stars if it had the following: "Doughnut" nirvana Wish-list -An actual parking lot built for more than three cars -Signs describing doughnuts. I know you rotate the flavor often, but really how long does writing "chocolate chip" on a post-it note take? -Eclairs, Eclairs, Eclairs!!! -How about opening a new location that's called the "Sugar Suite" with comfy couches, Wi-Fi, and Nora Jones playing in the background..just a thought.

Plain and simple, really good doughnuts. Their location is interesting and there isn't much parking.

  • Nathan B.

Sugar Shack, let me count the ways: They have Zeke's coffee. They have amazing donuts. There is always something new. There is always a reason for more donuts. A dangerous place. (I mean that in the best possible way) Talking specifics, their donuts tend towards the larger, more substantial breed, rather than the smaller more oily type. (if that makes sense?) I love them. I prefer the more stripped-down variants (the lavender and vanilla I had the other day was great) as compared to the bacon-topped or other donuts with a lot of extras on top, but you have to try a bacon donut at least once. Voted one of the best for a reason, and this is from a Fractured Prune fan.

  • Damian L.

I don't eat donuts anymore since I'm trying to lose some weight and semi-diet. Is what I would say if Sugar Shack didn't exist. I had been to their newer location downtown a few times but this is the first time I've been to the original location, and damnit, they're delicious as ever. We ordered a half dozen donuts for my fiancee's birthday, and we got a variety including a couple strawberry glazed, an orange glazed, an M&M, a Baby Ruth, and a maple one. Everybody that had a donut unanimously decided that they were far too delicious for their own good. Donut Deets: - These are yeast donuts, the fluffy kind that rise. They're not cake donuts. They're absolutely wonderful in that they're nice and fluffy without being too bready, dense, or overly fatty. - The donut flavors. While there are tons and tons of them, the selection at any given time includes 10-15 flavors. So if you see something featured in a picture, there's no guarantee that they'll have them. I love all of their fruit frosted kinds as they have small pieces or chunks of the fruit in the glaze. I'm sure all of the other kinds are great too, I'm just a fan of fruit flavors. - They're about $8 for a half dozen, which is a bit more than your average donut, but it's so worth it. Doughy Verdict: If you like donuts, you owe it to yourself to try either this location or Sugar Shack Coffee downtown.

I had some very delicious donuts here! wow I was impressed, the building is small without much chance to sit and enjoy your donut on site but they make a great grab and go place. I would highly recommend!

Heaven. Always a pleasant experience. Never disappointed. I credit them for getting me my job. I started as a contractor and would bring in donuts occassionally. I was called into a meeting and was literally told, "we'd like to convert you to a full time employee. Then you can expense the donuts."

  • Bryce C.

Best donuts in Richmond, hands down. I have enjoyed every donut I have tried here and there always seems to be a new flavor. Though the lines are long, the employees zip through the customers and are always friendly. The standout donuts are always their strawberry flavored ones!

A five-star review really should be "as good as it gets." When it comes to donuts in Richmond, Sugar Shack is as good as it gets. The donuts are made fresh daily and the variety is really something special. Maple bacon, Lee's Fried Chicken, Samoa, basically anything you can come up with they have probably made at some point at Sugar Shack. The prices are very reasonable, and as they've gotten more and more popular I'm a little bit surprised they haven't raised them. Some caveats to this five-star review: -Although these donuts are five-star quality in taste, they don't keep for very long. Plan on eating them that day. -Parking is an issue in the mornings. It is a VERY small establishment. -They can run out of donuts if it's a particular busy day. If you're ordering a dozen or more call ahead beforehand and check to make sure they have some in stock.

Every single donut I tried was AMAZING!!!!!! Was anticipating coming here and it was so much better than I thought! Their glazed is perfect. Fluffy and slightly crispy on the outside. Their sour cream cake was just sublime. You have to go!

  • Elijah C.

What, I can't give six stars? ;-) If Homer Simpson were around, these are the donuts he would drool over. Toppings on a donut don't really impress me, so I could not really care less about their maple sugar and bacon covered donut. I stick with the basics. I prefer their basic donut hand baked to perfection with a smooth sugar glaze. Kick it up a notch with the glazed donut with orange zest. You might just experience God.

These donuts rise to the level of a religious experience. The most airy glazed donuts ever, but I am addicted to the maple bacon donut. Apple fritter is huge and must be tasted as well.

I don't know where to begin about Sugar Shack. If I could marry a concept I would marry everything that is this doughnut shop. When confronted by sub par doughnuts in every other part of the world, I turn my nose up at them, aware that nothing can compare to the perfect texture that is sugar shack. If I die I want my entire life's savings to be spent buying all the unhappy people of the world a sugar shack doughnut so that for one glorious second they can experience pure, unadulterated joy. Go here.

  • Sarah M.

Not gonna lie...these donuts were the bomb. I can't decide if its a good thing or a bad thing that the sprinkles were so heavily applied that they were hard to keep on the donut as I was eating it?

You donut want to miss out on these donuts!!! Absolutely love this place! The donuts are so unique and so delicious. Try the cinnamon rolls too they are so good. My favorite is the sugar donut though. The coffee is delish. Whenever I go out of town and want to bring someone a little bit of richmond I bring them these as a gift and everyone has loved them. I haven't tried the chicken and waffle donut they occasionally have but it's on my list of things to try next time I'm home. There coffee is delish as well. Make sure the follow them on Facebook as well. They are always giving out free donuts if you go to the shop and wear something specific of bring something they say on Facebook. And who doesn't want to see donuts all over their Facebook page.

    (5)
  • Dave R.

Awesome! How do you describe "best donuts in town" without tasting them? The coffee is great too. We come here about once a week and other than the long line of people who want the same thing, this place kicks ass. Definitely get the cinnamon roll if you can.

Delicious, filling and full of flavor. Also helps that it's less than 2 miles from where I live. The donuts are big and fluffy. One with coffee makes for a perfect morning.

When there's a cloudy day (or raining, storming, tornado, hurricane, etc) Sugar Shack will lift your spirits and do your sweet tooth justice! Seriously, who doesn't want a soft, thick, sugary, round of fried dough?! Whether it's a simple glazed doughnut or a maple bacon doughnut (they actually have that flavor!), Sugar Shack will please!

  • Allison R.

After a year+ in Richmond, I have finally learned the magic that is Sugar Shack. And let me tell you, it is dangerous knowledge to have! I've tried two donuts now - the samoas and the salted caramel. Both were incredible. The donuts were soft yet chewy, with plenty of toppings. They also had a lavender honey donut that caught my eye the day I went, and that is definitely something I'll be going back for. As an FYI, at busy times, they have limits on the number of donuts you can buy (e.g., on busy mornings, might be as few as 6). The morning I went, I could buy 24 (ha!), but just keep this in mind if you want to feed a large group.

  • Emily B.

Best donuts in Richmond my friends. THE BEST! Go get yourself a blueberry cake donut, a strawberry frosted or a samoa. Or heck all three. Holy smokes you will NOT be disappointed. If it's a weekend, go sit on the bench across the street at Maggie Walker and scarf those things up while they are hot. You'll be like dang girl, you were right with those selections, they are so on point. But now you're asking, but HOW could she only give it 4 stars when she's such a HUGE fan?? Why??? Well here it is... the customer experience is, well... annoying. Often times there is a line and therefore you can't really see the selections. Then you get up there for your turn and get bumrushed into making your selections. I've had some peeps that are super happy and cheerful and will patiently explain the flavors and others that are haughty hipsters that snarl out answers while barking at you to move over (when there is no space). I get that they like to experiment and are constantly trying out new flavors but what I think would help TREMENDOUSLY is to take their top 5 bestsellers and always have those on hand (and labeled dammit!) then have a section of experimental or newbies that can be explained. I can't tell you the amount of times we've walked away with nothing because we didn't want any beer flavored donuts with lavender and ketchup frosting. Okay not really, but you catch my drift right? Just keep the staples shack! But I still love you, okay?

The donuts are so good - especially the maple bacon and strawberry. I haven't been to another donut shop that offers the same variety. Will definitely return!

Delicious donuts. A bit pricey, but what can you expect? I wish there was more parking though. Also don't forget to check in on Yelp while you are there. You get a Yelp coupon for a free donut! Only reason why I took a star off is when we went, most of the donuts that were there contained chocolate. Which is fine, but not everyone loves chocolate all the time. It would have been nice to see some fruity flavors. Although we did go around 7 or 8pm at night.

OMG I so did not need to go to this spot! Yet, I DID! I had not one, but two doughnuts and I felt like I seriously cheated on health food. Well, I DID and it felt good for the time being. The aftermath, not so much. Sort of like cheating in real life. Any who..their doughnuts are really good...the best when fresh out the grease, but I had to setting for two that were already sitting out. Nonetheless, a great doughnut spot if you're in the are or in the mood for a doughnut or two or three.... I do not judge!

I can definitely see why people love sugar shack. I'm a fan too maybe not a huge fan but then again I'm trying to lose some weight so if I tell myself that I won't go so much. Sugar shack is all cake doughnuts so they are big and fluffy, so basically delicious. I really love how they sometimes get really creative with their doughnuts. I mean using lee's fried chicken, omg so awesome! When I went I got a strawberry chocolate chip and a pumpkin pie chocolate drizzle. The strawberry was really great. Not too sugary and the chocolate chips gave it a nice crunch. Now the pumpkin pie was amazing. Had a great strong pumpkin flavor but the chocolate got kinda lost. Overall, I don't think you will be disappointed if you come here craving a doughnut. The only downside to sugar shack is how small it is. I was a little annoyed that they don't label any of their doughnuts cause if they did their line would move so much faster.

Best doughnuts I have ever had! Definitely recommend the Maple and Bacon and vanilla with sprinkles! Definitely worth the $1.20 a doughnut.

As you drive up to Sugar Shack, you will easily scope out the horrendous situation that is called a 'parking lot'. For such a popular business, it is way too small. People are parked very closely to one another, block people in and find small areas of curb on which to park on. Those living on the wild side park in neighboring lots but it isn't recommended - we watched a few people get towed during the small amount of time we were there. Certainly a money-maker for tow companies. The building is small. The line gets ridiculously long and confusing when it starts to wrap around in circles inside (no one wants to stand in line outside in the freezing cold). But shewwwww-eeeeee!!! I wish I could re-create and bottle the wondrous smell that smacks you in the face when you walk in the door here! Heaven on Earth! It certainly makes your wait time more enjoyable. The donut case will make your mouth water. So many different flavor options to choose from. The flavors offered also vary throughout each day as they continue to make new batches. I was a little (Ok, MAJORLY) disappointed that the samoa flavor wasn't available during our visit. However, I sucked it up and decided on Maple Bacon and Baby Ruth. With a cold glass of milk, the Maple Bacon selection was delectable. The Baby Ruth looked amazing, but I shared it with a friend later on in the day. The way it was devoured, I'd say it was also a winner! If you haven't been, hell, even if you HAVE, get your booty over to Sugar Shack ASAP!

I know Sugar Shack is supposedly the new hotness, but I have been a number of times. The first time I visited, they had a chocolate cake donut with coconut in it... five plus stars! When I didn't see it again, I asked... apparently the kitchen decided not to make it any more. Well, at least there were apple crisp donuts; four stars! Now they don't make those either. Every time I go in, there are loads of the same old basic donut, just with stuff on top, usually the old standby of chocolate with something else. Meh. If Sugar Shack would bring the game back to where it started, I would give it five stars, but seems like they are getting lazy and just can't be bothered to stretch any more. Two stars.

The donuts were so very yummy! I was also impressed with the cleanliness and decor of the store. I was met with friendly staff when we walked in and did not feel rushed to choose from the many choices. The store smelled wonderful! I can't wait to return!

Stopped here before leaving Richmond, and it was definitely a sweet way to end our visit (pun intended.. ha ha). I got the lemon poppy seed donut with strawberry drizzle, the bacon maple donut, the caramel donut, and a Guatamalan coffee. All were fantastic and so fluffy and moist. They also were not too rich, which was a definite plus. My favorite was definitely the maple bacon.. I've had several maple bacon donuts at different places and I'd have to say theirs is the best, simply because the bacon pieces are real actual pieces and not 5 crumbs of bacon, like most places. The coffee was also excellent. The staff did a great job of keeping the long line of customers moving and were super friendly. I wish we had a Sugar Shack in my city!!

    (5)
  • Erica A.

A family favorite. I always get 2 of the maple bacon donuts because. Well, Who can resist a donut with BACON? It tastes like an entire breakfast on a donut. I am still chasing the elusive Lee's Fried Chicken donuts! There is no flavor I have not enjoyed. And to top it off, the staff is fun and the coffee beverages are incredible, too. This is high on my list of donut spots in Richmond!

Pretty good donuts. The maple bacon was sold out by the time i got their and thats the one i really wanted! But the sea salt caramel and chocolate glazed definitely hit the spot. Ill make sure to come back earlier for the maple bacon!

FINALLY! I've been stalking this place on Yelp, reading reviews and plotting when I would make my way down here to try these well raved about donuts. I had to pick my daughter up from summer camp on Cary Street, so I finally got my excuse. Was way easier to find than I thought and parking wasn't bad, but I went at 5 pm on a Wednesday. I parked, went in, and was warmly greeted by a young lady behind the counter who offered to answer any questions I may have. I asked about the flavors and was prepared based on the previous reviews. I chose 6 and then saw 1 additional one that looked good, so I ultimately walked out with 7. So far, I've only tried the chocolate and caramel with sea salt and it was yummy. Donut was very fluffy and light and there was just enough topping. My family and I plan on tasting the rest tonight after dinner so an updated review coming shortly...

Review Update: 3 out of 5 still. I returned to Sugar shack, but this time I got a half dozen, due to gluttony and peer pressure. The service did improve this time; I showed the woman working the free house donut check-in, and she happily honored the Yelp deal (my dozen came out to be $6 as a result). I chose the salted caramel, maple (they ran out of bacon that day sadly), m&m pink-frosted, coconut pink frosted, Oreo, and sprinkle donut flavors. I was so full from eating lunch earlier that I only tried pieces of the salted caramel (which, was a thumbs up), Oreo (nothing super special about it), and pink coconut (tastes exactly how it sounds). I thought I would be able to try pieces of the other donuts I bought later, (aka: the next day) but the donuts were hard as a rock by then. This was really disappointing; most donuts I purchase from other spots can keep soft for at least 24 hours. These barely held up... I even tried the good ol' microwave trick in attempt to soften them to a state of edibility. No such luck. The donut toppings are fun and cute to look at, but the donuts are are all made of the same recipe besides the toppings. It'd be nice if they had donuts that were made with different batters (e.g: blueberry donuts, chocolate donuts, etc) instead of just changing the stuff thrown on top. Overall, I gave the shack a second try, but don't find any reason to come back.

These donuts are the heat! The actual donut isn't that sweet and it has the perfect compression bite but the sweet icing w the less sweet donut is an advanced combo and it works great. Great coffee too!

Its now been 19 trips (there were more but I was so consumed with donuts that I didn't check in) and this is still the top donut/coffee spot I have been too! I have traveled to Chicago and DC for competitors and I still come home to Richmond to enjoy the best! Sugar Shack's amazing dough sets it apart first; its flaky, soft and delicious. Second are the amazing taste concoctions that the team puts together. My favorites are the Brown Sugar Cinnamon, Samoa, Plain Chocolate Glaze. However, I have never had a bad donut here (trust me I have almost tried them all - the darn cherry coke eludes me its my Eleanor!). In addition to the great donuts is the awesome coffee they offer and really cool staff. I am huge fan and I will continue to spread the word!

  • Emily K.

Ugh, Sugar Shack has me addicted. Seriously... I literally did not like donuts AT ALL until I moved four blocks away. Country Style and Krispy Kreme don't compare to Sugar Shack, which has somehow mastered the art of making a donut that is both light and fluffy, yet substantial and not gone within three bites. A big gripe of mine is that the toppings are mostly gross - all of the donuts seem to be quite sweet without much on them - so adding stuff like M&Ms or oreos or bacon (ew) is just overkill and leaves you looking for a palate cleanser about a quarter of the way through. I wish Sugar Shack did more gourmet donuts, or donuts that have more complex flavors, sort of like the irish car bomb they did on St. Patrick's day. The cinnamon sugar, glazed, chocolate glazed, blackberry filled, and cream cheese glazed are my standbys. Simple but perfect donuts!

House donut is light and fluffy. Coffee was a significant miss. Donut was quality and did not need to be buried by sugary toppings.

Mommy and daddy loves these doughnuts...they purchased a half dozen which included maple bacon, vanilla coconut, plain, samoa, toffee, & strawberry cheesecake. They indulged in these sugar puppies two days in a row...Now! If they'd make a vegan version I'd be happy to try...guess I'll keep dreaming

Sugar Shack is one of biggest reasons why I miss Richmond (although they are starting to branch out in Virginia). During my 5 years living there, I ate at sugar shake all the time! I got coffee and doughnuts there before they 'blew up' and started growing. Hands down, best doughnuts I have ever had. I actually love glazed but they have so many creative kinds which is awesome. They make great coffee as well! The only reason why I am giving them four stars, instead of five is because the service isn't that great. They are definitely nice if you catch someone at a good moment, but I have had a couple encounters when they are snappy or seem overwhelmed. Honestly, what I think happened is when sugar shack made USA Today's top doughnuts in the country and blew up, they just weren't prepared for it. I'm sure it was overwhelming going from a small coffee/doughnut shop to a line out the door 24/7. So I do feel for them in a sense. It is totally worth it though, best doughnuts ever.

First visit, and I'm very impressed! This place looks very different on the inside. However, parking is a total nightmare which is why I could only give them a 4 star rating. Whatever you do; do not park in the gravel parking lot behind the building. ..as we were promptly warned: YOU WILL BE TOWED IMMEDIATELY! Anyways back to the most important part of this review, the donuts! !! They are great and the variety is wonderful. This weekend they are serving Lee's chicken donuts, I know you're thinking, uhh, and so was I at first. That's until I tried one... I'll let you find out for yourself. Great experience, and welcome to my bday month celebration.

Yes please!! Delicious, cakey doughnuts with a variety of flavors. Sugar Shack offers both traditional and some out of the ordinary flavors. I highly recommended this place and it came highly recommended to me. For the best selection, go earlier in the day/afternoon because the most popular flavors will sell out quickly - even though they make doughnuts all day.

These donuts are delicious. Like... holy shit, the MOST delicious. We dropped by during a quick weekend in town & tried the cinnamon sugar, the Samoa, the maple bacon, & the Snickers. All of them were thick & doughy & somehow light, all at the same time, sugary but not disgustingly so. Someone here knows their donut recipes, for sure. Still, I'm just not enamored of the sort of charm Sugar Shack seems to be going for. They have a handwritten chalkboard on the wall, a sort of laying-the-ground-rules sign. The sign says the donut options rotate too quickly for labels & instead instructed newcomers to let the staff know they were visiting for the first time. My friends & I - indeed newcomers - told the guys behind the counter we were new to Sugar Shack & asked if they could tell us what the donut options were. "Which ones?" the guy asked, & when we seemed confused (why wouldn't he tell us what all of them were?), he looked at us & said in a sort of judgy voice, "Uhh, ALL of them?" We were admittedly sort of overwhelmed, & we stepped back to make way for other customers as we made our decisions, but it felt like Sugar Shack's employees were all just standing their rolling their eyes at the stupid new customers. I get it, they're going for a hipster vibe, but we would've appreciated a little bit of Southern hospitality, I think. We left with donuts in hand, happy about the tastings that were to come, but I, for one, was not particularly pleased with the overall ambiance of the place. I'd go back for the donuts but not for the attitude.

My husband and I just moved to Richmond about 6 months ago. Back where we were from we only had the standard chain donut shops- but as soon as we moved to Richmond we were told we HAD to try Sugar Shack donuts. We were not disappointed. They were AMAZING!! We got six donuts. Two of the butterfinger, one chocolate glazed, one cinnamon sugar, one regular glazed and a cinnamon roll. We ate off the box for two days. I am not a fan of overly sugary/rich desserts and these donuts were the light, fluffy and not overly sweet. Can't wait to go back!

  • Rebecca L.

The best! Just the best! The line gets long (so get there early). Actually, we WERE there early (9am?) and the line was out the door! The donut flavors do change ever 15 minutes so they don't have labels on the donuts (as their "helpful rules" board states). We saw this delicious looking samosa donut, but it was gone when we got to the front. We didn't mind so much, since there were SO many tasty looking donuts! (Just don't get too attached to one flavor :p). They are more of the cake/fluffy variety of donuts. Not as dense as Dunkin Donuts, and oh...so much better! So much tasty sugar. Which could be why everyone was so nice? Who could be mean surrounded by so much happy!? Also - They have Zeke's Coffee from Baltimore! Win! Also, Also - check their Facebook page or yelp page before you go. They are always doing specials for a free donut!

I generally do not like sweets, but DAMN are these donuts amazing! My sister had an interview at VCU Pharm School, and so we made a foodie trip out of it and this was on the top of our list of must eats! The first time that we came here was around 10pm and it was not busy at all. The people who worked here are so helpful and nice! We just got 2 donuts (1 coconut chocolate and 1 maple bacon). If you check in on Yelp, then you can redeem a free donut! We took the donuts back to our loft rental (shout out to Airbnb) to try them AND OMGGG hands down best donuts ever! We loved the maple bacon donut so much that we had to come back the next day to grab a 1/2 dozen for our Beaus. They loved them!

Best donuts in the land. I regularly come here to grab a dozen for big meetings at work or to take to brunch at a friends place. They are always a hit and they have some incredible flavor combos. Best ever was the guiness dough, baileys boston creme, with jameson chocolate frosting they had on St.Pattys this year!

  • Rich S.

Donut heaven! I had the classic maple frosted donut this morning as a post-run snack and it was excellent. Light and fluffy dough, yummy sweet icing. I also had a 16 oz cup of coffee, which was strong, fresh, and less than $2. They also have a full espresso menu. The space is warm, but unfortunately there's no seating to mingle. I thought the staff was very pleasant and friendly. It irks me about that the credit card terminal asks you whether or not you want to leave a tip. I prefer the tip jar. I'll probably be back after future runs through the fan!

Fantastic! I've eaten Sugar Shack on a number of occasions, but it was the first time I actually went to buy the donuts. I already knew the donuts themselves were pretty fantastic (a little filling though). The staff was very helpful! They explained the basic flavors while I was choosing the different donuts to bring to the office, and helped me decide on which flavors to pick. I definitely recommend coming here to grab a dozen!

********PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: DO NOT PARK AT THE ADJACENT LOT. IT MAY LOOK LIKE A CONTINUATION OF SUGAR SHACK'S LOT, BUT IT'S A TRAP. YOU WILL GET TOWED BY ASSHOLES THAT WILL CHARGE YOU $130 TO GET YOUR CAR BACK. I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE AS AN OUT-OF-TOWNER.******** But seriously, if you park there, expect to have your entire day ruined by those predatory dicks, also known as On Time Towing. They watch the lot from across the street and will tow your car as soon as you go inside the shop. Douche bags. ANYWAYS, I digress. The donuts here are mind-blowingly fantastic. So much so, that if you get here closer to 3, they'll all be gone. You have to get there early on! They're soft, moist, fluffy, flavourful, and just downright f*cking delicious. I have been looking far and wide for donuts that compare to Baltimore's Fenwick Bakery. I've tried donuts from New Orleans to Charleston, SC to Florida and so on. But OMG, finally! These are SO good. They almost made the $130 tow bill feel less painful! Haha, who am I kidding. Nothing would make that feel better except winning the frickin' lottery and putting them out of business. No hard feelings here! We talked to one of the employees about their Zeke's coffee (seeing as I live just up the road from the original Zeke's here in Hamilton, Baltimore) and they said they're thinking of opening a shop here. YES. PLEASE. YEEEEEESSSS. I may sound like a donut lunatic, which I am, but can you people please be like "Devonshire from Bmore needs these in her hood or she'll die"?? Just beg for me! Alright, I need to step down off of this crazy box. Ultimately, my review is a very positive one. I'd take my advice and get yourself some donuts and experience some pure delicious joy.

I've had my fair share of donuts from different places and I must say... Sugar Shack is by far one of my faves. The downside is that you never know what donuts are available when you arrive. The donuts that are brought out change every 20 minutes based on bakers' preference. Had to make a second trip just so I could order the maple bacon donut before leaving richmond. All the flavors I ordered were just foodgasmic: sugar, chocolate, maple bacon, samoa, nutella, and glazed. This is a must stop shop for donut lovers!

Oh my doughnuts!! We have found the doughnut paradise!!!! Their doughnuts are AMAZING!!!! I had the chocolate and caramel glazed, to die for!!!! My husband got the red velvet, which I tried too, unusual, but very good. And we got the sprinkle one for our daughter, she devoured it!!! The size of those things is just ginormous, bigger then any others we've tried in the past. A huge array of flavors, which actually change every 15 min, unreal!!! They make them right there in the back kitchen, and there's actually a window where you can see them create those beauties.. fresh, airy, fluffy beauties that are just Scrumptious!! Salivating just thinking about it.. Brewed Zeke's coffee is delish as well. The place is tiny, really is a shack size, but very cool, decor is unusual, the staff is great, friendly and very helpful. Found a new location to look forward to when in town. Definitely love at first sight!!

When this place opened up and I found out about it, these were my initial thoughts: 1) Why did this open right when I moved out of the city!? 2) I have to try this place out! 2 visits later, I'm glad this place wasn't around when I was living right around the block because I would be such a fatty by now. The name is quite appropriate as it is really a shack. It's made to be an in and out kind of deal. Love that I check in and free donut already just for being a yelper! I know donuts are the new it thing and this place goes all out on flavors. I ended up getting a dozen to share with my family and friends back home. Needless to say, they all loved it! The donuts are big, but very light to eat! Love all the different flavors they offer. I got glazed, cinnamon sugar, samoa (Heck Yeah!), butterfinger (?), pineapple, chocolate glazed. You are in better luck for more variety if you get there earlier! Donut loveee!

The only minor issue I can fault Sugar Shack for is being so popular that the line so often extends out the door. I don't know that I've had a consistently better donut, anywhere. I've perhaps had a better glazed donut from another famous RVA establishment, but Sugar Shack has such a variety and such consistent quality across their rotating flavors. This place is always a treat and a "can we please stop at..." request on the weekends.

This is one of the best donut places that I've been to in Richmond. The store is pretty small and so is the parking lot. I've only been here once, so I'm not sure about the names of the many donuts that they have. Wonderful selection! You're bound to find a donut to fulfill your craving. I love their glazed and chocolate covered donuts. Both had the perfect amount of sweetness. Great texture! These donuts are so addicting, but then again, what donut isn't? I heard that they always have different flavors, which is pretty cool. I like the check out process. They use square at checkout. They use an iPad that is encased in wood for checkout. When its your turn to add tip and to request a receipt to be sent to you or to be printed out, they just flip over the iPad to you. Very interactive!

  • Sarah R.

I can't even...just so good. These are the best donuts I've ever had. The staff could be friendlier and less "hipstery" - just gives them license to be rude! Hipsters are in Brooklyn, not Richmond. You make a good product - so be nice and excited to sell it!

Now I know what all the fuss is about. Huge beautiful donuts in combinations never seen before. I brought a dozen of assorted treats in for the office. Now I am the most popular gal in the place. Everyone had fun cutting the donuts in two so the could sample multiple flavors. All were a hit. I especially liked the maple bacon. So filling I could not eat lunch until 2pm!

I can never go back to a Krispy Kreme donut after having had these beautiful little yum yums. With them, I've never had a donut I did not like. I love how fluffy and soft they are, and the flavors are always a hit. The only downfall to their constantly changing menu is the fact that you can't get attached to any one particular flavor. I fell for their key lime donut and never saw it again. Always get there early if you want their famous bacon maple donut. Don't bother calling ahead as flavors sell out too quickly and change every half hour. Very happy they opened a second location.

One of the top 10 donut shops in the U.S.! They got there because they do have the best donuts in town. Donuts are glazed, not cake. Handmade by experts. Recommended: anything strawberry glazed (it's my absolute favorite), actually any donut. I have no discrimination when it comes to Sugar Shack donuts. Side note: they've been quite busy since they were named one of the top 10 donut shops in the nation. Line is long, but goes by quick. May have a limit to 6 donuts if the line is too long. Follow them on facebook, twitter, instagram to get current updates. They've been really good at updating the social sites when it comes to crowd, contest. They also give out free donuts everyday just check out the social sites on what is needed, could be bring a flower, guitar or a smile. @rvadonuts

I was just in getting a few donuts and the guy working the counter seemed annoyed when I asked what a certain donut was. He never made eye contact, had a scowl and rolled his eyes when I asked a question. Did I ruin his day by asking " is that caramel or maple", maybe he needs to consider a new line of work. This has been my experience with Sugar Shack lately. The donuts continue to be amazing but the service is sub-par. This past weekend I was in and there was a line out the door. That's fine, busy isn't bad, except there was only one person getting people donuts. There were two other people working but one just stood at the register and the other was just kind of walking around behind the counter. He then yelled at customers for coming in the door and standing near the "coffee bar". He said people had to go back out the door in case anyone needed coffee. I can see where he was coming from but if you are worried about too many people in line then go help get people donuts instead of yelling at customers. Also no one was getting coffee. A few people actually left after his little tantrum. The donuts are amazing, the best I've ever had. I have tried all kinds of fancy donuts here but go back the chocolate frosted every time because it is that good. They truly know how to make a great donut, but they need to work on their employees attitudes. I always leave a little pissed at how I was treated. I know a few of my coworkers feel the same way. With all the new shops perhaps management is spread thin, but they need to check in and see how their staff is treating customers, it's not good and no matter how good the product customer service matters. Ask the staff to smile, or at least not scowl at the customers. Hopefully the folks out in midlo are a little nicer.

CRAZY delicious! Best donuts on the entire east coast (and believe me, we have consumed A LOT of donuts)!! On our east coast "roadnutz dough trip" we stumbled upon this amazing gem. We had Samoa, strawberry, maple bacon, espresso chocolate chip, and orange zest to name a few. Some highs: 1) SUPER moist 2) AMAZING flavor in every bite - the strawberry donuts even had a crystal like crunch from the strawberry bits in the glaze. 3) CREATIVE and unique creations. 4) Absolutely NO greasiness - not like those cheap gross donut places that leave you with grease mouth, making it impossible to consume more than 1 doughnut.

Heaven is a donut from sugar shack! They have new flavors (salted caramel, marble, Girl Scout cookie-esque, etc, etc) every time I've gone; the strawberry icing with sprinkles seems to be a staple and a delicious choice! Also, to be noted is their coffee from Zeke's a roaster in Baltimore that makes a great companion to donuts. Last, but not least BE CAREFUL PARKING!! The lot around back is known for towing almost immediately; sugar shack is great about marking the appropriate parking spots so don't ignore their signs!

O M D {oh my donuts} The donuts were out of control yum. We came on a Saturday morning ll very busy ll but didn't wait more than 10 minutes. We really wanted to try the maple bacon but they were out, however the staff had the cooks make some quickly for us which was totally unnecessary but very much appreciated. Also tried the vanilla icing with m&m, strawberry, and apple pie. Delicious, all of them. Best donuts we've had in RVA thus far. Oh! Cold brew is amazing too! Friendly and fast service, even better food!

So good! They have a lovely staff who helped with explaining all the different types of donuts.I bought six; the maple bacon, sea salt caramel with chocolate, candied walnut with chocolate, caramel chocolate chip, and two Oreo. Was about $11. Definitely will be back.

  • Amal H.

Simply delicious! I love their donuts. But i realllllllllly hate that they use the same gloves for holding the donuts. I do not eat pork, the guy used the same gloves from the person before me ( maple bacon) to hold my samoa donut. I threw it out, i got embarrassed to say something with a line behind me.

Sugar Shack absolutely live up to their hype. Regular donuts simply cannot compare. However, these donuts are not for those on a diet, or those watching their weight- they are for those who want to indulge. Indeed, there is a lot of sugar! Just a heads up: Not all of their flavors will be available at one time, because they have them on rotation. Each donut is of considerable size, so you are getting what you're paying. Personally, because they are so sweet, I find that one donut is quite filling. It's best to space eating them out- otherwise you might fall into a sugar coma! Be prepared to wait in line because space is limited. Unfortunately when it's freezing like it was yesterday, the waiting in line will take place outside the door. I wish there was a place to sit inside, because it has a very cozy vibe, but I guess that's part of the shack's novelty.

Parking is an unfortunate nightmare as well as getting in and out of the lot. Counter service is almost as traumatic. The donuts are not marked and cashiers seem irritated if you ask what kind they are. Some are obvious by toppings, but call me crazy I just like to know what I am ordering. That being said, once you are able to safely park, get out of you car without being hit in lot and get your donut from a not so friendly server its not too bad. Not great but an average donut. For a much better experience check out their location in the West End. Service and Parking are a breeze. Don't forget to try a Cafe Con Leche too its awesome.

Fantastic, pillowy, sweet donuts with a bit of a crispy exterior. So much yum! My problem was the major shade that was thrown at me for not knowing each donut flavor. I'm not a regular (good thing for my waistline and blood sugar levels), so I didn't realize there are a few different glazes/frostings with a variety of toppings for each glaze. Some were just a singular variety. Unless you are a donut psychic or something, there is no way to guess what the flavor is by looking at them for some of the varieties. I was made to feel like an idiot when I asked for the pumpkin pie and got a snarky "Which one?" before I understood the topping choices. You can't decide to forego labels then expect people not to have questions/be confused. Don't even think about pointing to them instead to save face. I did go fairly early in the morning, so I hope it was just a case of the Saturday morning grumps. The guy at the Square POS was nice. Delicious donuts though!

Please forgive me for my previous review, where I only gave Sugar Shack four stars. They deserve all five stars--the customer service has improved drastically. (It wasn't bad before, but when they first opened, they had people in there who weren't friendly and seemed irritated to be working there.) The new staff was AWESOME and the donuts are the best you'll ever taste in your life, I promise. Also, in my previous review I mentioned not having a sitting area--I take this back. I'm glad they don't have a place to sit because people need to get in and out and not hold up the line or crowd the place. :-)

I've been fortunate enough to have traveled to many different places with gourmet donuts so my review may be tainted because of my vast donuts experience. I came and ordered 4 donuts - maple bacon, nutella crunch, something with strawberry, and im totally blanking on the last one. The donuts are a fairly decent size for gourmet donuts, but i was not OVERLY impressed. the base of the donuts is the same. the only difference is the icing and toppings on top. While the base donuts was good. i wish some of the flavors were baked INTO the base donuts. Not all flavors are always available, and there weren't that many options when I went in so maybe i just missed out on the really good ones...? I'm not sure. not bad, but was expecting more from a place with such high reviews.

The "donut" I just ate was, with no hyperbole, THE GREATEST THING I'VE EVER EATEN. Friendly staff, amazing selection of incredible donuts. I had a caramelly chocolatey concoction of confectionary bliss. And a fantastic cappuccino perfectly made. I cannot wait to pass this way again.

Yum. This place calls for a special trip if you don't live close. Everything is delicious, and the people are friendly. Tiny building and limited parking though; but still worth the visit.

Well I've been here twice so far. Loved it the first time, came back, and just left with 24 free donuts. Moral is awesome donuts and awesome people. Will definitely return.

I'm a simple girl who likes a simple donut! Sugar Shack has something for me and something for someone who loves their donut with bacon. They're delicious! I think everyone should go. Especially those with small cranky kids, this place works magic lol. Cons: The line outside can be a little crazy. They run out of donuts quite often. Pricey for a donut shop, but it's worth it. Tiny parking lot

Oh My Goodness! I'm not a sweets eater-strange I know- but when they asked me if I wanted a cake for my bday I said no...let's try sugar shack. I had already heard amazing things and who doesn't love bacon! We got their infamous bacon and maple donuts and their powder donut. Straight heaven! LOL

I can't help but love this place, sugar=yum, cute staff=yum, donuts=yum and donuts with crazy toppings=yum. This is THE place for yeast donuts, its not great for cake donuts, but its got yeast down to a science.

I don't eat donuts very often, but when I do they are definitely from Sugar Shack. HIGHLY recommend the samoa.

    (5)
  • Cristina P.

Yes, yes, yes! If you have any inclination to eat donuts, you must indulge here. The flavors and variety are awesome (lavender honey, maple bacon, Oreo, salted caramel) and the service is very friendly and helpful. Get the salty caramel donut - the only thing you'll regret is not having an unlimited supply of them.

    (5)
  • Christine D.

Awesome! Moving right near one of their locations soon and I cannot wait to be closer to the deliciousness.

    (5)
  • Tina K.

So, yes, these doughnuts are little pillows of sweet deliciousness, so sweet that your teeth will hurt, which helps limit the number you can eat in one sitting. But please, Sugar Shack, listen to your customers and label the doughnuts. Nothing is more irritating than standing in a line having to wait until the people behind the counter go through the entire line-up over and over. It wastes time for the people in line and must be super-annoying for your employees who have to repeat themselves 1,000 times a day. Delicious coffee, too! Go later in the day to avoid lines.

  • Anne O.

These donuts are insane and so is the crowd. I was told by a fellow patron in line that this place had been on some list for best donuts in America or something. The line long, there is no skirting around that one. I went in the morning and the line was literally out the door. That being said, the donuts are DELICIOUS. We got a plain pumpkin, a walnut pumpkin, two samoas, an espresso, and a maple bacon donuts. Each was fresh and soft and melted in my mouth. The coffee there is really good too. Don't come in expecting to get a certain kind because they nicely point out on their walls that the flavors change roughly every 15 minutes so be sure to ask what they have! I was lucky enough to get there just in time to get a fresh batch of Samoas which everyone seemed to recommend. If you are content with waiting you will reap the rewards of how good everything is.

So it took me a while to jump on the sugar shack bandwagon, but I finally did! I have been MANY times and every time I indulge in my purchase before taking a photo to share on yelp! I love the consistency of their products! The donuts are big and they have many different flavors. Just beware that if you find a donut that becomes your "favorite", then chances are it's already 100 + people who already favorite it- so be methodical about when you stop by -because if you go when its packed, you may not get the flavors you're craving! The donuts are soft, fluffy and heavenly. I am not sure if they post their flavors(for the day) online, but that would be nice for us regular patrons. Flavors I have tried: 1. Strawberry ( a favorite of mine! it's the right amount of sweetness and not overdone) 2.Raspberry (as a lover of raspberry everything I was NOT a fan of this donut-the taste was off to me-maybe too sweet?! I couldn't put my finger on it-but I took one bite and that one got trashed that morning and I have never ordered it again lol) 3. Cinnamon Bun (another favorite of mine...this thing is big!!!! I don't eat alot of sweets normally, so this thing gets cut in half at my house and I may eat some for breakfast and the other half as a snack another day) 4. Salted Caramel ( here is another one that I wanted to love so much, but it was a huge let down! I have salted caramel cravings here and there, but this donut flavor was not good for me. I thought the caramel was WAYYYYYY tooooooo sugary/sweet and too gooey! This might be one of the only flavors that I would have to give this award to Dixie Donuts because they do salted caramel correctly) 5. Chocolate, oreo, plain with cinnamon/sugar (don't know the name)....these were all good as expected. Nothing really stood out to me when I tried these, but they are good. My only complaint is their coffee! I have tried on numerous occasions to try their coffee in the mornings when I grab a donut and each time I have been disappointed. It could be a simple issue as untrained staff on how to mix proportions etc. I usually order soy, coconut or almond milk with all my coffee anywhere I go and I normally have no issues. But sugar shack makes it very WATERED down and the flavors are OFF! So if your a soy/almond/coconut person, don't waste your time! Risk being late to work and just go elsewhere for caffeine kick! Overall: I think everyone should give sugar shack a try! Your bound to find something you like. I sure did!

Unique and delicious donuts. Don't like that they don't post what flavors they have in the shop on social media or even in the display. They do this so as not to limit the creative freedom of their bakers, but seriously! Is it really that hard to update flavors on social media as they change?! That's the appeal of social media live minute-to-minute updates (duh). I have personally run into staff who seemed annoyed when asked what flavors they have. I've heard from other friends who have come in to visit that their experience w/ the staff was very similar. Some of the people are just rude! Additionally, don't like the lack of parking @ the location at Lombardy and Leigh. Favorite donut is the apple fritter which I have only had once! They don't make it often enough. Also, love their quirky deals!

Excellent donuts. Maybe not my all-time best, but very solid. Atmosphere is friendly and I appreciate the commitment to eco-friendly, fair trade coffee etc.

Maple bacon is to die for! Great people who get you in and out as soon as possible. Look up their Facebook for daily quirky deals to receive a free donut! Also, they have birthday donuts! What more could you ask for??

  • Simoney H.

It's embarrassing how much I come here, but I can't help it. It's right next to my house so the delicious aroma of the doughnuts draws me in ~3 times a week. It's a wonder I haven't gained anything - just goes to show that you can enjoy treats so long as they aren't super processed! Every single flavor I've tasted (and that's most of them) is like a little circle of heaven. The actual doughnut itself is always crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Perfect material for addiction. Customer service has also improved a lot since the place opened up, so if people on here put bad reviews about it in the past, I'd give it a second chance. This place is as good as dessert gets.

  • Macon R.

Doughnuts were pretty. But every time we get them for work, they are dry. I wish they would spend more emphasis making a GREAT doughnut instead of making a ehhh doughnut look pretty. Duck Doughnuts is much better. Will I eat them? Yes, do I crave them? NO. As a foodie, I would prefer the focus be on better not bigger. I'd rather have a smaller doughnut that was awesome, then a huge one that was ehhh just ok.

I think this place is a little over-rated. Donuts are good but not amazing. Not sure if it is worth the long wait at weekends.

Best. Donut. Ever. Since moving to VA from CA, I haven't been able to find a delicious fluffy donut like the ones I was raised on. Even my mom told me that nothing here is "like Marie's". But alas, something that rivals my childhood memories. Now Marie's had a much larger variety, in terms of donut type (fluffy, cake, fritter), but they didn't venture into creative flavors. If you're in the area, stop in. In the words of my boyfriend, "I'm so glad we don't live closer." My skinny jeans agree.

Donuts, the second cousin of a cupcake. Yesterday was my first visit and I have absolutely no idea what took me so long. The EASIEST way to get here is either by bike or walking. Me and a couple of my friends rode our bikes, placed them against the wall and went on in. It's a pretty cute little donut shop, no fancy chandeliers or modern furnishings, just a regular place with awesome donuts. If you check it on yelp you get one free house donut! Score! I got the maple bacon donut and the Toffee heath bar donut both were very delicious and nicely sized. Maple bacon donut is definitely different as the contrast of salty/sweet gives your taste buds a different thrill. As most reviews have already mentioned, they NEED to put up signs that indicate what each donut is! Instead of having the person come around and point to you which is which.. Service is pretty friendly you can get in and out quickly. A couple of reasons why it's not a 5 Star Review 1) Parking.. there is a small lot in front of the place but there aren't designated spots and what I mean by that is that there are no lines and you can just park in any direction you prefer which can cause a traffic jam. 2) Prices. Each donut was roughly $2 a piece which is a bit steep, considering it's close proximity to VCU.

    (4)
  • Kimber D.

Love Sugar Shack on Lombardy. The donuts are creative and tasty. The parking gets a little tricky on Saturday morning; but well worth it. The glazed donut with maple topping and bacon is divine! Worth a visit for their creative treats.

  • Arun M.

I come here for the donuts and they mainly sell the yeast style donuts. I'm very picky about this style of donut because if not done right it comes out tasting like a dinner roll with icing on top. Their frosting and toppings are very creative and flavorful. Some of their filled donuts are unique but after eating some I felt like the execution was bad. The service, like their donut options, are a hit or miss. If you're looking to get some of the popular flavors then come when they first open. Location for this particular spot is a little awkward to get in and out of even though it's at an intersection with a stop light. This place grabbed my attention because the name was sweet but overall if you're into this style of donut then you'll like this place, as for me, I'll look into other options.

  • Brett C.

As a non-coffee drinker, I was a little bummed they didn't have any Juice...but then I realized...this company ONLY sells sweets and coffee. After initially being frustrated, I instead applaud the Sugar Shack to their 100% commitment to support RVA's indulgent vices. Congrats, SS!

Best donuts in Richmond. Being on a restricted diet, I appreciate the staff's willingness to sell me unglazed donuts.

  • Toni T.

Ok, so I finally got to try the maple bacon doughnut. At the moment I took the first bite, I realized what all the rave was about. The key is definitely to get the "right" flavor (that is, one that suits your taste buds and makes a lasting memory for you). Then, I went back on national donut day and got the Lee's Chicken doughnut. Wow. Go to Sugar Shack if you want good doughnuts and you're in the mood to be adventurous, because these flavors certainly are. Oh, and bring some patience. You'll certainly need it, at least when inquiring about all the flavors (signs would be helpful, y'all?), if not hunting for a place to park during peak hours (it's not worth getting towed out of the lot behind the building...I can't afford $100 doughnuts).

    (4)
  • Jamie O.

Best Donuts Ever. I have to get a dozen at least a few times a week.

    damn good donuts. cool people

    (5)
  • Bonoca Y.

Oh so delicious. Best to ask what's hot because those donuts melt in your mouth. Taking away one star only because it's annoying to ask what all the flavors are. I realize they change every hour, but how hard would it be to label each flavor?! By the time the counter person went through the whole list of flavors, I forgot what the first ones were! Make everyone's life simpler please and post names! Other than that minor quibble, these donuts are the best!

    (4)
  • Philip H.

Everything is great, period. Coffee/lattes/every single donut. I live down the street which makes me WANT TO DIE BECAUSE I HAVE DELICIOUS DONUTS RIGHT THERE ugh. Anyway, go here at least once. Good luck keeping it at just once.

I'm so in love with donuts. Even before donuts became the new cupcake, they were my thing! I'm just obsessed. Sugar Shack donuts are PERFECTION. Yeasty, pillowy, little pieces of heaven! I loved all of the flavors I tried, but in particular, the sea salt caramel was freaking delicious!!! Sugar shack is definitely worth a stop whether you live in Richmond or are just passing through.

    (5)
  • Sabena M.

I thought I was the last person in Richmond to try Sugar Shack, but just in case there are others out there who haven't yet been by, prepare to go off your low-carb diets! It is worth every carb! So many yummy things to choose from and friendly people to boot!

First, let me say that I came here after reading a comparison in another review to Voodoo Donut in Portland. Whoever wrote that has obviously never been to Voodoo and should be ashamed of themselves. The donuts here are a little more dense than your normal yeast consistency which may or may not be your thing. The donuts themselves have good flavor but have nothing remarkable in the batter that makes them special from a standard yeast recipe. Truthfully, the texture and flavor of Sugar Shack's yeast recipe reminds me of Martin's. The supposed "amazing selection" when I visited early-afternoon seemed to be just a variety of combinations of the same flavors rather than unique, clever pairings. For example, a plain chocolate, a glazed donut dipped in chocolate, a plain donut dipped in chocolate with raspberry drizzle, a glazed donut dipped in chocolate with raspberry drizzle, etc. The bacon on the maple bacon was chewy. The staff actually appeared to hate their jobs. I'm not sure if they're friends of the owners, or if the owners just happened to hire THAT many employees who lack social skills, but it was almost impressive. Sugar Shack is better than Dunkin Donuts and several other chain options around Richmond, but by no means is it a 5-star culinary experience. I don't know how high or sheltered you'd have to be to call these things perfection.

  • True F.

Best donuts I've ever eaten. Consistently creative flavors like orange coconut, Jameson chocolate iced, strawberry Oreo, maple bacon, maple and Lee's fried chicken, samoa, espresso chocolate chip, chocolate eclairs, pizza sized party donuts... they do donut magic.

  • Gabriel L.

This is the best donut place in Richmond

    (5)
  • Chavi B.

Sugar shack was really yummy. I only went once, & most of the doughnuts were sold out by the time I went which Is why I am giving 4 stars. I really wanted to try the salted caramel doughnut. I noticed there was a lot of doughnuts with peanut butter which was unfortunate for me, since I'm allergic. Otherwise it was a cute little place, with sugary delicious doughnuts :)

  • Katie S.

Delicious donuts although kind of pricey. Pleased with the unique donut options plus they have decent coffee too

    (5)
  • Amanda M.

Samoa donut with perfectly toasted coconut, caramel frosting and chocolate drizzle was a nice treat. Cool atmosphere-copper ceiling tiles and counter, exposed brick walls and natural wood counters. The donut hipster behind the counter wasn't the friendliest, but the girl who made my iced tea was very helpful and pleasant.

    (4)
  • Susan S.

Donut Heaven. Seriously. These are amazing!! The service is friendly and fun. The maple bacon was out of this world delicious. The salted caramel was absolute favorite. It melted in your mouth with the initial caramel sweetness and then you got this little pop of sea salt that comes along at the end and enhances the caramel flavor perfectly. I can't wait to go back.

    (5)
  • Aster B.

Found my holy grail for donuts. I appreciate that they are all hand cut and hand dipped and ALWAYS fresh. Also, the texture of the donuts is better than any donuts I've tried. I'm not a big fan of really thick and cakey donuts 'cause they tend to be dry - but sugar shack's are light and usually not too "headachingly" sweet. My favorites would have to be the Mixed Berry donuts. It's always my recommendation for first timers. Perfect!

    (5)
  • Sharonda P.

My family and I decided in comparison with Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme, and Sugar Shack we actually enjoy Sugar Shack a little better because they offer the most unique and creative donuts. There are other little donut shops we haven't tried yet though. The employees take care of you right away, and right out the door with your choices. I give them 4 stars because when entering the parking lot it is a very dangerous intersection there.

    (4)
  • Meredith B.

These people... they are a Danger. They Deliver, which is really the last thing I need in a shop that sells absolutely top-notch fried treats. It's... actually sort of a relief that I don't live in Richmond itself or I'd be in a great deal of trouble, and as is, we still ordered a huge batch the last time I was within their delivery radius. I particularly recommend salted caramel and espresso glazed.

    (5)
  • Andy H.

Sugar Shack is amazing when it comes to the selection of donuts offered, I've been there twice. The first time I ordered 6 donuts, the one for me was a Butterfinger donut, which just tasted like chocolate... I couldn't taste any of the "butter" part of it. Other than that every other donut tasted pretty good. I'd recommend this donut shop to anyone in the area, but I would stay away from the Butterfinger donut. I also ordered donuts the 2nd time for my little cousins from out of town, they seemed to love it, especially the maple bacon. Maybe I just had a bad donut.

    (3)
  • Gus P.

Had a hard time finding this out of the way spot but it was worth it. The maple bacon doughnuts are one of a kind and were an instant hit when I went recently with a group of friends. They also do a riff on a Girl Scout cookie Samoa doughnut with toasted coconut that is another reason to come back again. Good coffee too!

  • Jonolyn B.

Best Donuts. I don't even mind driving far to get them

    (5)
  • Alexis M.

I love this local doughnut shop. Everything is fresh, unique, and yummy. My favorite doughnut is the maple bacon by far, and they do a daily free doughnut all the information for that is listed on their Facebook page.

    (5)
  • Liz J.

Amazing. Just amazing, delicious, fluffy donuts that you want to eat over and over again. It is so good that the line is almost always out the door even on rainy days, and because it's a small shop, they constantly rotate their flavors and offer different varieties. (This also has a downside because sometimes you can't get your favorite, but then it forces you to try something new and equally delicious!) My favorite is a regular donut with strawberry frosting, but I am always a sucker for something that has chocolate. You can't go wrong no matter what you choose.

  • Chelsea M.

Stopped at the sugar shack twice on a weekend getaway to Richmond with my donut loving boyfriend. We both agreed that these donuts were top notch. Fresh, warm, and light and fluffy; there were plenty of flavor combinations to please any palate. Only drawback was there was no tables in house to sit and enjoy these tasty treats.

  • Jeff H.

Sugar Shack is mouth candy as well as eye candy. I love dropping in to pick up a dozen various before taking my truck in for repairs. I give them to the mechanics and I swear it makes my invoice a little lighter. With that: 1) The ladies behind the counter are super friendly and incredibly cute to boot. 2) The Yama siphoned coffee is amazingly strong and not bitter at all! 3) These donuts are the perfect density and much easier accessed than Williamsburg Rd, BUT if it is the middle of the night, and you need donuts, the latter is waiting for you. 4) You definitely have to be strategic when visiting. Parking is the only downside. 5) They have t-shirts and those shirts make awesome gym shirts. I love working out in my Proper Pie shirt and now my Sugar Shack skull shirt will make a nice alternate. I give Sugar Shack a 5 star for the five points above! Oh, this place is Square friendly.

    (5)
  • Pia C.

Hidden doughnut shop in Richmond. While it is raved for it's select diverse flavors, I found it drenched in sugar with poor, inconsistent display. The strawberry glaze they use is amazing though, made from real strawberries. Huge doughnuts for price.

Donuts as big as your face. At least it seemed like it.

  • Leah F.

i love sugar shack donuts like a fat kid loves cake, which is why i can't visit so much or i would be a fat kid! but needless to say these donuts are perfect. I don't love all of the toppings, but they always have creative choices and the staff is friendly.

    (4)
  • Tara B.

Sugar shack no doubt has the best donuts around. I'm disappointed in how my large order for my wedding was handled and the unprofessionalism of being asked to text my credit card information for payment, without ever receiving any details of what my order entailed other than the number of donuts I was ordering. I must say, the owners quick response when I emailed stating i would be canceling my order was much appreciated. Whether or not the problem was addressed...who knows...all I know it that I am one disgruntled bride who will not get to have a Richmond favorite to enjoy at my reception.

Best doughnuts and lattes in Richmond, VA! Hands down! Handmade doughnuts, amazing flavor and worth every penny! I will never go back to Krispy Kreme ever

  • Meagan G.

They're good donuts, I'm not going to lie. The prices are a little over the top, especially for their basic glazed or chocolate donuts (not the specialty donuts). My issue with Sugar Shack is that their employees tend to be very rude. The one time I went in, because their display case wasn't labeled I was asking what each donut was and by the end the employee pretty much told me to choose a donut and stop being picky about what's on them. Another issue is that they claim to have all these different flavors, but if you go there around 2pm or later almost all of their donuts are gone.

I can't tell you how much I love Sugar Shack. The donuts are not too sweet, amazingly soft, always fresh, and so diverse. I wish I could have some everyday day, my waistline would hate me though. I really love all the donuts I've tried, I really can't choose a favorite. Everyday they have some sort if fun promo for their customers that can earn them a FREE house donut. This place is really amazing, and definitely worth a try! Dunkin' and Krispy Kreme who?

Your service is great! The employees were pleasant and patient. Even though it was my first time there, I wasn't rushed and I loved the donuts! Half of them didn't make it home. Keep up the good work ! I got the Oreo glazed, strawberry and sugar and caramel .. Tasty !

Best donuts EVER! They get very creative with their flavors and keep their customers interested. A definite must for all donut lovers and out-of-town guests. Stop by if you are in the Richmond area. The maple bacon and somoan donuts are easy favorites.

Really good donuts and really affordable. I sampled twelve different donuts; and they were all amazing. This was my first time here; and I want to shout out to the staff who took the time to educate me on everyone of their donuts and help me put a great selection together. I went in the afternoon and everything was really fresh.

I have to say that every time I get a Sugar Shack Donut, i am instantly happy!! If you can try to go early, when the donuts are just coming out of the oven and are still warm!

They have yummy donuts who flavors are constantly changing. Quick service and reasonably priced. Frustrating there are no labels telling you which donuts are which.

We WANTED DONUTS after having dinner at Chilis and were so happy to find this place! First ALL donut/coffee places are closed on the peninsula (were we are from )early. Duck Donuts and Sunshine Donuts to mention a few. To find one open at eight o'clock was fantastic! The donuts were the perfect size for the price $1.20 or so. We bought the dozen for seven something. DON'T forget the free donut here on yelp! The dough was airy and not greasy as some mom n pop donut places go. The frosting on the chocolate tasty. I only gave four stars and would have gladly gave five if not for the lousy attitude of the guy and gal behind the counter. Sour faced and begrudgingly giving out the names of the donuts. The three peeps in front of us wanted a dozen they were asking what and how many of each there were , he was almost rolling his eyes at them. They said give us a minute to decide and walked out. We thought we were dealing with the soup nazi and waited for the gal to tend to us. She was only slightly better. We got our delicious donuts and got out. The BEST of donuts, lousy service.

The most delicious, light, fresh donut I've ever had! My friend lives in Richmond and told us he preferred Dixie Donuts because of his preference to cake donuts opposed to the "fluffy" kind. We set out to compare the two. We stopped at Sugar Shack first. Super friendly staff greeted us & ran through the donut selection with us. My sweet tooth was overwhelmed, but ultimately decided on the chocolate glazed donut with strawberry drizzle. It was the perfect texture. Light & airy and best of all, not greasy at all. My boyfriend got the strawberry glazed version. You could tell it was made with real strawberries. They all tasted so fresh. I almost plunged right into the bag of goodies I bought for my parents to devour their Maple Bacon & Samao donuts. I restrained myself with all the willpower in me. My boyfriend ordered an Oreo milkshake & proclaimed it was one of the best he'd had. I, however, needed something a little lighter to quench my thirst. I asked the barista if they served unsweetened tea. She kindly ran through the loose leaf teas with me and recommended her favorite iced variety. I was very pleased with the choice! It was absolutely my favorite of the two donut shops in the area. I can't wait for my next visit.

These are the perfect donuts for my household. My wife prefers lighter, Krispy Kreme-style donuts. I prefer heavier, cake-style donuts like the ones you find on Williamsburg Road. These are right in the middle. Neat flavors, cool aesthetic both outside and inside. Can be very crowded and parking can be tough. But it's worth the struggle.

Uuuuum Sugar Shack is Sugar Crack (See what I did there?!) By far the best donuts I have ever had and that is saying a lot because I eat a lot of donuts...and Im not a cop!! So during a brew tour that a friend had strategically organized I told him we had to make a quick pit stop... after much begging and convincing we had the addy in his gps and were on our way! We almost passed the tiny building but caught before going through the intersection. Pulling into the parking lot I could smell the sweet aroma of donuts while sitting in the car! I fumbled with the door handle to my friends spaceship car and like a little school boy jogged to the door. When I got inside I was done for, the donut smell smacked the mess out of me after that its sort of a blur, we walked out with half a dozen donuts and stood in the lot to gnosh. I took a bite of one of the maple bacon donuts I (must have) purchased and almost shed a tear at how amazing it was. I think I was starting to embarrass my friend because he began to look around to see if anyone was watching me. I began to tell him just how delicious this thing was and all of a sudden an employee that walked out after us walked up to us, "Hey I was getting ready to leave and go home but they wont let me leave and I dont want to leave these in my car in the heat..." What he said next almost made me faint, "...you guys want this box of donuts?" Time stood still, and I started hearing a chorus sing, doves were released and I eventually came back to and replied with a simple "of course, thank you sir." Ok I lied it was more like a "Hell yea, thanks man, sick!!!!!" Grabbed the donuts and grinned ear to ear! Sugar Shack I will be back!!

What a treat. I don't normally post reviews, but I had to make an exception. These donuts were perfect, no other way to describe it. I have to say thanks to the staff who were so gracious and sociable that I felt like a regular on my first visit. When I got home and took my first bite the only way to describe it is by comparing it some kind of spiritual ecstacy. Their glazed donuts remind me of ones I used to get as a child from Southern Maid in Shreveport, but better. Amazing taste, texture, and the perfect consistency. I have never had a better donut than the ones I got from the shack today. :)

  • Shane J.

These donuts are simply amazing. Skip dunkin donuts and you will not regret it. So far my favorite is the Samoa. I did not like that the donuts weren't labeled. The employee seemed to get frustrated because my wife and I kept asking what each one was. Go there!

went there tonight for the first time at the parham location... was given the wrong doughnut which i realized too late. the staff was very rude. there was a worker there hammering the letters c o f f e e on the wall- (wooden letters for decoration) crooked- over & over... which made it very loud... & very annoying...probably why my order was not heard. it was not a good first impression. why would you hanmer with customers in there? decorating 3 weeks after it opened, with customers in there? at 7:45 pm? very odd. i just did not see the hype. maybe if i got the correct doughnut i would, but i do not care to go back. not fun. not good. & why were there literally 12 employees working... & only 3 varieties of doughnuts out? do you need to go early or is it usually like that?

    (1)
  • Sarah D.

Best donuts I have ever had. Hands down. Absolutely delicious and so many fun flavors. Since it is such a small place the line can be a bit long and sometimes you have to wait for more donuts to come out, but totally worth the wait!

Easily the best donuts you will ever eat, served up by casually cool hipster staff who love to give away free donuts. Check out their Facebook page for daily deals as well.

  • Betty T.

I don't get the fuss. I think the donuts are okay but the flavors on the top (orange, strawberry, etc.) are almost flavorless. The glaze on the regular is like library paste.

    (2)
  • Katrina M.

There is a lot of hype behind this place. I've heard of people waiting in line for their donuts. I do think that the donuts are warm and delicious, but I don't think it would be worth my time to wait for them. I suggest going to Sugar Shack during the less busy hours. When I went there wasn't much to choose from. I guess they had sold out of all the favorite flavors early on in the morning. The donuts for me were a little TOO sweet for my taste. I think I would like them better if they weren't as glazed or filled with toppings.

Donut fanatic. I even own stock in Krispy Kreme and I felt bad when I enjoyed these donuts. Not once or twice, but I am there just about every morning before work to get something. Only bad thing about this place, I cant stay away long enough to actually try to lose weight.

Oh my gosh! These are the best flipping donuts in Richmond!! Huge and soft, with that perfect combo of chewy and melt-in-your-mouth goodness. I'm in love. I've eaten the maple bacon, glazed, and strawberry so far. They used real fruit in the strawberry glaze and the taste was phenomenal. Totally worth the drive downtown.

I've never been to the actual location, but people at work are always bringing in a box to share. It's probably a good thing that I've never been to the actual bakery itself because I would probably be tempted to buy a whole dozen for myself!! these donuts are amazing. especially the maple bacon one...it sounds like such a strange combination but it's really delicious. Sweet initially with a salty, smoky aftertaste. These are definitely the best donuts I've ever had.

Sugar Shack is a great little hipster-chic donut shop with pretty delicious house coffee and fantastically fluffy and creatively flavored donuts (we tried the Bacon Maple, Coconut Pina Colada, Irish Cream and Toffee, Raspberry, and Samoa - all were amazing!). The staff was pleasant, the donuts did not disappoint, and I was really happy with their dark roast. I only have a few qualms/suggestions for this new diabetes-to-go establishment: - They need to list their hours on the outside of their door. (*Also - they will apparently be open on Sundays starting July 21st. Yay!) - The flavors should be labeled. I went in there a bit blind and couldn't find a list or labeling whatsoever. It would definitely prevent the line from building up if they could help clueless but curious customers like me just look and pick instead of asking the guy behind the counter to describe/name every one. - This was very frustrating: maybe it was just me, but they stuffed/threw the half-dozen that I bought in paper bags... upside down... it's a shame that a place that makes such beautiful and delicious donuts treats them so unceremoniously. It would have been nice to have them in good presentation... say, in a box. When I pulled them out of the bags I had to reassemble them a little before giving them out. Hopefully these are just growing pains. I'll definitely be back for more, but maybe next time I'll bring my own box.

Do you remember the feeling when watching "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"? You know, the part where all the parents and kids who found a golden ticket walk into the first huge room? The room with a chocolate river and giant gummy bears? Remember that sense of "awesome"? That feeling of "damn, that's gotta be the best idea EVER"!! That's the sensation you get when you bite into one of Sugar Shack's home made donuts. The location is great, the price is right, the people are friendly, and the sweets are amazeballz!!! This place is original and hip. It's no wonder it's taken off like a super bouncy ball. I can't wait to go back and I HIGHLY recommend others checking this place out.

Sugar Shack never ceases to amaze. As a Maggie Walker student (that school across the street), I frequent this friendly establishment far more often than I should admit (probably once or twice weekly) and have been amazed at the quality of the doughnuts on each and every occasion. The staff is always friendly, hospitable, and more than happy to give a description of all the doughnuts offered. To further establish themselves as a small, hole-in-the-wall eatery, Sugar Shack keeps their doughnuts on a constant rotation. In fact, the doughnuts are so often switched out that it can be difficult to taste the same type twice. However, I can attest to the fact that their cake doughnuts (specifically the blueberry) are far superior to any other doughnut I have tasted and are absolutely heavenly in both flavor and texture. Sugar Shack Donuts is also worth a like on Facebook because every day brings a new "freebie." Among the most creative offers are a freebie for singing a classic song, bringing in a sharpie (which they keep and use to mark the boxes), wearing an EMT uniform, writing down a cheesy pick-up line, and even bringing in a birthday card for one of their employees. A fair word of warning though, the cake doughnuts as well as the maple bacon and Samoa are specialty doughnuts and will cost a few cents extra as well as not being eligible for a freebie. If this eatery is not on your radar, be sure to check this place out as it truly embodies the Richmond food scene while adding a few of it's own eclectic ideals. You won't be disappointed.

I recently went back to Sugar Shack to try different assorted donuts since SS was up and running. I chose three donuts to satisfy my sweet tooth before work. I picked the Butterfingers, peanut butter glaze with peanuts & chocolate chips, and a peanut butter glaze with peanuts. All of the donuts were delicious. The donuts had great texture, plenty of toppings, and a very airy inside (soft). Sugar Shack has some unique combinations of toppings on their donuts. Most donuts are around $1.90 (a bit pricey for a single donut ).Sugar Shack should label their donuts because prices varies between specialty and house donuts. Sugar Shack dozen of donuts are on the expensive side. The shop is very small. It's more of a to-go type of donut shop (no seats). The parking lot is very small and parking can be a hassle especially during busy times (don't park anywhere if you cant get parking. Some lots near SS are private and you will get towed). The employees are friendly. Sugar Shack is great choice for assorted donuts in RVA. I give Sugar Shack a 3.5 rounded up to a 4 because of the consistency of their donuts. I took a star away because of the prices.

Love this place. Donuts are consistent with texture and flavor and the toppings vary with the seasons. My only gripe was the shortage of product on hand... both times I've shown up they are sold out of certain donuts. I realize forecasting your sales is always a challenge, but not having your full menu available is a huge miss. Quick fix: make double of everything. If there are any leftovers at the end of the day, message me for my address :) A lot of people compare this place to Country Style Donuts, but they are two completely different monsters. One isn't necessarily better than the other, just depends on your preference!

AMAZINGLY delicious donuts. Great selection that rotate often. The employees are patient and give great recommendations. My favorite thing was sitting in the chairs in front of the store listening and watching people fawn over the donuts.

I ate there just after noon on Saturday the first week they were open. By then, many flavors were sold out (as I expected). I picked up four donuts and had to restrain myself from opening the box on the way home. They smelled heavenly and tasted even better when we finally bit into them. Soft, light but oh so yummy. Will be better as the staff adjusts to demand. Only drawback is that the parking lot is too small.

  • Stephanie L.

Delicious!! Tons of flavors and has that small business, hometown feel to it. Customer service was amazing and my friends and I couldn't help but eat our donuts right there! Only thing that would have made it better would've been a big glass of milk to wash down my donuts. I got a maple syrup bacon (nomz) and a jelly filled donut. The maple syrup bacon obviously stood out. Both donuts were warm, and delicious. Just the right amount of sweet without making me feel like I just gave myself diabetes.

  • S Teresa M.

Donuts are amazing. Parking stinks. I know, I know, there are many signs saying not to park in the gravel lot next door. But, hey, we were just gonna run in and see what flavors there were and then go move the car. Less than 5' and the car was on the tow truck. $130 later we had the car off the truck. Before we had even gone back inside, there was another car on the truck. So beware, the tow truck hides somewhere very near the lot and your car can be towed in less than 5' upon entry to Sugar Shack.

  • Amy G.

Love the variety and fresh taste, don't like the uncertainty of not knowing whether my favorite flavors will be in stock. I'm generally a fan of the caramel icing and the Samoa is my top choice. Appreciate the late hours and putting in a nice spot where many others would not have bothered. Don't know how many more donut restaurants Richmond can support, but pretty sure Sugar Shack will outlast many other comers. Ride your bike or walk if you can because parking can be a real struggle.

the original sugar shack location is my local coffee shop. the coffee is better than Starbucks down the street and the staff is always welcoming, even when the line goes out into the parking lot. love the donuts, too, of course! my favorite is cinnamon sugar, but really you can't go wrong with any of the flavors.

OMG I will never go into a Dunking Donut or Krispy Creme again. Sugar Shack's donuts are amazing they are big, sweet , fresh ,locally homemade , the flavors change like everyday ...and the works are sweet and adorable. I am in love with this place.

I should know by now, having gone through the whole cupcake craze, that just because somebody plasters a fancy name on something doesn't mean it's going to taste like that. But I love donuts, and when we drove past Sugar Shack it was just so cute that we actually made a U-turn to get into the parking lot. The inside is adorable, clean, and bright, and the donuts look fabulous. The prices are OK, service is good, they even use Square to get you checked out quickly. BUT. There's no flavor in these babies. I wanted to like them, I sincerely did. We chose 3 flavors and the only flavor any of us could detect was mint, in the creation called "German Chocolate Mint." I hate to be a stickler, but German Chocolate used to refer to a specific cake: a chocolate cake with caramel icing topped with crushed pecans and coconut. How would that possibly combine with mint? It doesn't, because German chocolate in this case doesn't mean anything. We couldn't even detect chocolate, just mint. We tried a vanilla filled donut, iced with chocolate. There was no flavor to the vanilla filling and there was so much filling packed into the donut that we ended up with filling smeared all over someone's shirt. Again, I hate to be a stickler, but over-stuffing is as bad as under-stuffing. The ideal donut can be eaten with fingers, not with a fork, on a plate. The last flavor we tried was called Irish Car Bomb. The guy told us it had Jameson's whisky and Guinness in it. Being so close to St Paddy's Day it seemed like a "must-try".....there was zero flavor. It was nothing other than a plain donut with icing on it. I wanted to like it, my friends told me it was a great place, and it was so cute and hip inside.....but I'm not going back.

Always happy to see a local business succeed, but I'm not entirely sure why this is working. Yeah, they're pretty donuts, but they're also at the end of a long queue after struggling to park. Even if I lived across the street, I don't think I'd stand in line for these again. With all the fancy toppings, all I can taste is sugar and shame. I don't get it.

    (2)
  • Aimee C.

I get the novelty of the fancy flavors, fine. They have an edge on creative donuts. WHat they do not have is an actual good donut. I won't go back, and I certainly don't think it's worth waiting in line for. How hard would it be to have a menu board?

Not really an update as such, though I have been back multiple times and continue to be impressed. I just feel like I need to address the review by Susan L posted on 8/6/13 Yes, they "promised" that there would be vegan donuts - a promise which they have actually kept. However, after realizing on day one that they would not be able to concentrate on both vegan and regular donuts and do both well on a day to day basis they had to make a decision to go with just the regular. But because they wanted to keep their promise and because they wanted to support those with a vegan diet (something they really didn't have to do) they came up with the idea of having a special day just for vegan and gl donuts. And yes, to a bakery, they do have something to do with each other - both require some type of special processing and/or ingredients that are different than for normal, regular ones. As far as limiting people to just a few donuts...well would your husband rather have waited in line only to find out that there were none available because people were buying them by the bulk? I'm sure you would have complained about that too. As far as the taste goes, gf is quite different and definitely not everyone's cup of tea. However, if you had read the comments from people on FB (which you obviously frequent yourself since you took a shot at them for posting so much) you would know that the people that have gf diet restrictions were raving about them. Obviously SS cares enough about their customers to take the time to make sure they were putting out a safe, tasty, totally enjoyable treat, That is the sign of a great business.

I went on a Thursday morning, between 9:00-10:00. The parking lot only has about 5 spaces. I ended up parking in the gravel lot next door, which I found out later was not allowed. So I'll just park somewhere on the street next time. When we walked in, I was disappointed. Why? 1. No seating. 2. The display shelves were practically empty. The cashiers said that they were waiting for new batches. That means fresh, hot donuts, but still, a lot of people were waiting and I think Sugar Shack should anticipate high demand early in the morning and just keeping pumping those out continuously. Again, no seating. So we ate our donuts in the car (after a tenant in the next door apartments told us that we weren't allowed to park there). Oh my lawd, they were tasty. We got the blueberry glazed and strawberry glazed donuts. Not our first choices, but those were the only ones available at the time. Delicious. Totally worth the lack of parking, seating, and waiting. Once they get their act together, I'll be back again.

Best donuts in town, hands down. They make every single thing from scratch. The fruit glazes are always wonderful. My favorite was raspberry until I tried the orange. Both are totally to die for. The apple fritters are a real treat, so if you happen to see them (they're elusive), make sure you get one. They are not to be missed!

Normally- i do not want to rave about a new place, because once the newness dies off, they can sometimes become mediocre. In the case of Sugar Shack- i think once the newness wears off, they will only get better. Expertly placed between 2 colleges and a high school, Sugar Shack knows its audience. Most of the doughnuts were of the candy bar/cookie variety- oreo and MM being the most popular flavors of the people in line at the time. They also have a full espresso bar and coffee (didn't get the roaster of the coffee- but it was a company i had not heard of before) as well as milkshakes. I was able to find parking, but considering that the majority population was Gov. Schools students- I'm assuming that the parking lot was filled with employees- which was a shame because there's only about 6 spots to begin with. The gov school students sort of held up the line, many people were just there to be there- and not getting anything, which made an already crowded place more crowded. The shop itself is an attractive but sparsely decorated space- dark and light wood accenting the bar and register area. There are no tables/outdoor seating, and i hope that changes. a picnic table outside would be a great addition! It was great to see the baker working from the line as the kitchen has a glass wall reminiscent of krispy kreme. It was frustrating was that none of the doughnuts were marked with their type, leaving me to stand in line over 25 minutes and only just guess what each kind was- instead of making my mind up ahead of time. Once you got to the counter, the employees working were already so harried and frustrated (with gov school kids or just new business jitters? hard to tell..) they rush you through your purchase, and don't have time for your questions. ("is that lemon zest on top of that doughnut?" was met with silence) I ended up getting a maple bacon, an original glazed style, strawberry coconut, and a toasted coconut. All regular style- no filled. I'm sure there were other flavors in there- but since nothing was marked i was left to figure it out myself. The donuts were of the fluffy, yeast types with good texture- similar to the Country Style doughnuts we all love. The original style was the clear winner- with the candy-bar variety being tooth achingly sweet. I'm not going to be too harsh since they're still so new, and because overall, it was a good treat. If Sugar Shack can improve line times, improve organization/variety signage, training of staff- and also reign in the overworked gov school crowd- i think they've got a good thing going for themselves! That area is ripe for something fun- and what a great addition they have already made to the neighborhood. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Sugar Shack's ability to take something very decadent and complex and execute it in a way that didn't overpower you with sweetness. I tried their caramel with sea salt donut and it was spectacular. I'm not even a fan of caramel. It was just executed perfectly, as many of their donuts are. I highly recommend paying them a visit!

The flavors change pretty much daily, according to the whim of the bakers. I judge donut shops by their cinnamon donuts, and since I live closer to Sugar Shack instead of Country Style, I have to give the ribbon to these guys. Minus one star for lack of seating inside, but it's a minor inconvenience.

These donuts were ridiculous. Hot apple fritter. Absinthe donut, with cinnamon. Just go. And eat them warm if you can. Yum.

The chocolate an maple covered bacon donuts were delicious. I had pre-ordered a dozen of each for my sister's bday. She kept raving about how good Sugar Shack Donuts are and how much she wanted them for her bday so I decided to surprise her. I was more surprised than her! They were amazing. The dough is so.....yummy! And the chocolate and bacon as well. The donuts are really something else. I haven't had a chance to try any other donuts but I that is definitely on my agenda and it should be on everyone else's too!

I love how they make donuts. The outside is crispy, almost crunchy, while the inner donut is soft and fluffy which gives a great texture combined with a tasty batter. While the shop is small and fresh batches come out at a unpredicted times, its worth the wait.

Indescribable flavor combinations of delicious donuts. Unless you visit, it's hard to relate what a treat this is. I Tried the Carmel seat salt donut and cherry cola donut. Yummy!

Best donuts I have ever had in my life! The donut with bacon on top is to die for and the chocolate frosted was amazing as well. This plates puts Dunkin and Krispy Kreme to shame. Highly recommend.

These are delish. It's always busy no matter what time of day but line moves fast. Parking lot is small but all still very worth it.

I stopped by the shop around 7pm and they were bringing out fresh donuts. Basically it doesn't matter what time of day you are stopping by to get donuts, you won't be disappointed with the level of freshness. These are the best donuts in RVA, in my humble opinion. They are light and airy with just the right amount of yeastiness (it is a word). All the various flavors make them interesting but at the core, the donut is dreamy. Parking is limited but worth the hassle even if it's busy.

These are THE BEST yeast donuts I've ever had. Big, fluffy, melt in your mouth delicious. The "fancy" donut flavors are pretty incredible, too! And you can't beat the price!

I happened into this place on accident. The chai tea latte was so delicious. I did not try the do nights but they look and smell amazing. If you are passing by on a road trip this is a must see! I'm already conspiring how to get back for the maple bacon doughnut!

Sooooo goood. I have a ginormous sweet tooth and this place hits the spot, every time. I also happen to love yeast donuts and these are by far the best yeast donuts I have ever had. They're handmade, generous in size and incredibly fluffy. I love how the flavors change on the daily so you can try something new each time you go. There has yet to be a flavor that has been a miss for me. I have to limit myself, usually to three and even then I tend to eat all three the same day! If I bought more I'd probably eat them all...uh, self control, where'd you go? The donuts by themselves get 5 stars hands down. Sugar Shack as a whole gets 4. Ambiance, service and of course donuts have been wonderful but it would make it to 5 stars if they had a little more room to sit and park. I understand the lot space is limited but it would be nice not to freak out about where to park when the lot is full and where to eat these babies if you come with a group of friends. Maybe set a sitting time limit to help with flow? I dunno....but whatever it is you guys are doing with these scrumptious circles, keep it up!

I went here bc one yelper said they had vegan donuts....welll, they didn't :( I was deeply disappointed bc we aren't from VA and we went out of our way to try a vegan donut. Buuut, THEY HAVE VEGAN MILKSHAKES!!! So, my sadness lasted roughly 30sec and I ended up ordering an oreo vegan shake and it was delicious!!! My mom, not vegan tried a donut and said it was very good. Parking is difficult at this place, but it's worth waiting around for someone to leave so you can grab their spot.

Been here several times during the week around 9 AM before class, not busy and still a good amount of donuts to choose from. I've had the cinnamon, peanut covered and m&m covered donuts and they were all GREAT! I have gotten the coffee a couple of times, I now choose the small size...it has a kick! Great atomosphere, nice people and even the people in there as customers are great! Keep up the good work, and if you are reading this and haven't been yet, get up off your ass and get here!!!!!!!!!

Love the donuts, but I allow myself to eat them only on special occassions. Otherwise I'd be as big as a house. Always fresh, always a surprise on the combinations they come up with. And as an added bonus, very best coffee in Richmond. Parking can be challenging, and be advised there is no seating inside or out. It would be nice to have a couple picnic tables outside so you could eat the goodies there on the spot. But the buidling is a reconstituted very early gas station, and space is at a premium. You'll have to eat the donuts straight out of the bag as you drive off. Highly recommended. Good stuff.

Just incredible. Worth any wait time. Service was friendly and welcoming, and the donuts were amazing. I tried the maple bacon and the strawberry coconut donuts and was extremely impressed. The texture of the donuts and the flavor of the topping made my mouth water. Can't wait to come back soon! I absolutely hope to be a regular customer.

Wow. Just wow. If you like donuts and you haven't been to Sugar Shack yet, then you should go. Probably right now (or tomorrow when they open back up). I popped in earlier this week and left with not one, not two, but three donuts! Granted, I didn't eat them all, but I did eat two of them! I went with a classic glazed, because, really, who doesn't love this sweet, simple treat? Also, I feel like the way a donut shop does a glazed sets the tone for the rest of the flavors. Luckily, this glazed was fantastic. The donut itself was extremely fluffy and light, while the sugar coating provided just the right amount of sweetness without being overwhelming or creating sogginess. In addition to the glazed, I also went with the raspberry oreo option and this totally floored me. It was clear that they used real fruit for the icing; I could actually taste the seeds! And you can't fake flavor like that. The icing was sprinkled with crushed oreo, which created an awesome flavor fusion. If they have raspberry icing next time I visit, then I don't even need to look at the other flavors. It was just that good. I love that they change up the flavors constantly; this keeps customers on their toes and it's intriguing to not know what options you'll be faced with on each visit. I do wish they labeled the donuts to make it easier for customers to decide on their order while waiting in line... but I'm guessing this might be a big difficult with the ever-changing offerings. And they're so new that perhaps this is on the list of to-dos for the future. Either way, the donuts are delicious and the staff will tell you what the flavors are if you ask. I've only been once, so it's a tad premature for a 5-star review, but if they keep up the crave-worthy work, then they'll be earning that extra star from me for sure.

OMG! The best donuts ever! The parking lot is small and there is usually a line and you may only have 4 donut flavors to choose from (because the rest have sold out!), but it is soooooooo worth it. I have tried 4 different flavors and my favorites are the strawberry and the samoa (which tastes like a yeasty version of the girl scout cookie). Earlier today I was brought to the Sugar Shack by my family. It was not my decision to go there. While I was not kidnapped and forced to go, I also wasnt the one driving so I sucked it up and went along. In case those of you are wondering why I started my review off in that manner, the incident this past summer with Sugar Shack left a bad taste in my mouth. Upon arriving today, I noticed that there was a sign on the front window warning customers not to park in the gravel parking lot. Once inside, I liked how all of them employees did not hesitate to greet my family and explain the different types of donuts that they have for the day. Good service goes a long way. I ordered two donuts: One that had a caramel, vanilla and peanut topping while another had an orange type of glaze. Both donuts were fresh, but not as sweet as I would have liked them to be. Nevertheless, Amid the slightly high prices, good service is the law of the land and I could see myself coming back in the future.

This was the second time I had been to Sugar Shack. Before I even start, I will say that the donuts are worth the trip. They have a good selection of specialty donuts, when stocked. (That was the other issue.) Last weekend I went there to try them again, and after being there for literally 3 minutes; my truck was being towed. You can no longer park in the side lot (gravel lot) and they will nail you IMMEDIATELY, if you do. Luckily we caught them towing the vehicle before they left the lot. $130 later, I got my truck back after it had moved all of 5 feet. After that, we waited in line, which was out of the door and into their small parking lot, that holds about 7 cars. When we finally got to the counter, they were about out of everything. This was around 10:00 AM on Saturday. We got the last of the specialty donuts, barely, and didn't get the full assortment we had wanted. We got the last two maple-bacon and an M&M. There was only glazed and a cinnamon something left. There was still about 20 people behind us, again, with a line out of the door, and only two types of donuts left. Come on guys, this was primetime on a Saturday morning. Also, the signs they did have posted at Sugar Shack regarding the parking were on a printed out piece of computer paper (8.5x11) and barely visible. They were placed right behind the bench out front where people sit, so the signs were blocked from view from the outside. Hopefully as much as these guys are growing, they will get some common sense and rent part of the gravel parking lot next door. I'm sure they lose out on business because most people won't stop when the line is out of the door, the small parking lot is full, and there isn't anywhere else to park. I don't think I've ever paid $140 for donuts before ($130 for tow + $10 worth of donuts).

These donuts are delicious and their staff is friendly. The location is handy on my way to work it is just off 95 coming from the Bottom. This is another donut shop I drove past before it opened and watched it being built in Richmond. I love donuts and was very excited there would be a new doughnut shop in town. They did not disappoint me. Delicious and a good value since the doughnuts are very large. The staff and the owners seem to actually care about the customers what a change a pace in comparison another trendy shop over on Cary Street. They don't have labels and the staff does not seem to be tired explaining what the donuts are which is great for the customers. Sad thing is I no longer have to ask. I would have given this place a 4.999 if that were an option, just since there are some better donuts IMO. However, these are amazing and the staff and ownership is phenomenal.

Had heard about this place but knew the establishment to be an old car repair shop. I was suspect. Small establishment with lots of edible goodness! 4 stars instead of 5 only because parking is tricky & you have to wait upwards to 10 minutes to order and sometimes there's a wait for doughnuts

Really excellent doughnuts. And I'm a doughnut snob/addict. The flavors are good and all, but the basic glazed is done perfectly - dough and frying. And that's a rare thing

Dear Sugar Shack Management, please label the display case! This was our third weekend morning to try out Sugar Shack. First, the donuts are absolutely delicious! Second, the parking is a challenge at this location...but is easily overlooked by the quality of their product. Third, which is why we are rating 3 stars, the customer experience has consistently been subpar. The main problem is that there aren't any labels on the beautiful display case. We were told on our first experience that this was intentional, ironically to enhance the customer experience...something about encouraging the staff to engage the customer. Cool idea in theory but when the lot is full and the line is out the door all we patrons want is to order our box of donuts, grab a cup of coffee, and be on our way. The final straw was rude service. This morning the dude slinging donuts was impatient, reluctant to communicate what was in the case, and finally conveyed a condescending tone. I realize we all have bad days, and donut slinging can be stressful, but this entire experience could have been avoided if Sugar Shack would simply label the donuts! As original and amazing as these donuts are, we left with a bad taste in our mouth.

Delicious donuts with incredibly innovative flavors! I had the maple-bacon, and it was out of this world. The interior is whimsically charming, and Sugar Shack offers a lot of specials where you get a free donut if you show them a picture of your pet or know an employee's name. Sugar Shack has been a real boon to the Maggie Walker community, considering its proximity to the school, and I'll definitely stop by again.

After waiting for the promised vegan doughnuts, am disappointed. Sugar Shack announced before they even opened that there would be vegan doughnuts. After weeks of anticipation, ends up the only vegan doughnuts are on Sundays when they do gluten-free. Not sure why as vegan and gluten-free have nothing to do with each other. Have passed on by several Sundays after checking out the line, but last Sunday my husband stuck it out since the line wasn't crazy long. Once he got to the counter he was informed there was a three doughnut limit. Geez, as much as post on Facebook you'd think they could have mentioned that. In hindsight though, it was a blessing. We're vegan, not gluten-free, so maybe we didn't know what to expect. The doughnuts were fried hard on the outside and inside the dough was really dense and chewy with a bitter after taste that got stronger the more you ate. Maybe this is normal for gluten-free doughnuts, don't know. In any case, not tasty for us. Was so excited about this shop since it's nearby, but will drive on by to Churchill for WPA vegan goodies.

Im new to Richmond and a friend suggested that I pop in here for some sugary snacks! So glad I did! I came here Wednesday morning and picked up a half dozen of downright amazing donuts! They were soft melt in your mouth goodness. Seriously. I have also been looking for a good coffee spot and decided to try the latte of the day which was Almond Joy (as if it couldn't get any better). The drink was AMAZING. Everyone raves about Lamplighter but I thought this place's coffee was easily better. The barista was kind and she chatted with me while making my drink and happily answered all of my questions about the place. Such a cute and inviting spot that I will be frequenting no doubt!

Just the best. Tragic for my diet, but gloriously delicious. The Sea Salt Caramel is so awesome. The creatively imagined lattes and chais are less famous, but also well worth a try.

I had a wonderful first experience at Sugar Shack and cannot wait for my next visit. Their location is ideal for traffic into and out of Richmond, close to VCU, The Fan, Northside, Carver and Jackson Ward. For several years I thought that their location would be a wonderful spot for a bakery and coffee shop, and wallah!, within 2 years of me thinking that, Sugar Shack begins renovation! I am also a baker and always look forward to supporting other fellow bakers whether it be a sweet shop in another city or a new local business. I am in love with their tasty treats so far (I tried 3 different flavors: the toasted coconut and chocolate drizzle which very closely resembles the well known Samoas girl scout cookie, I also tried the apple fritter and the traditional glazed donut covered in a fresh strawberry glaze. I have yet to try their gluten free or vegan products, but look forward to doing so. I definitely give them 5 stars on quality of product. Their staff were equally friendly and inviting. Their coconut blended frozen coffee was delicious. While most folks are used to donuts being pretty affordable in the states, I would have easily paid more for one of theirs. It was well worth the visit. I have a feeling that my only problem will be having to wait in line on my next visit. I have seen a line out of the door each time I have driven by the place this week. (That's not a bad thing though :-)

Lovely, delicious, fun donuts! Coffee is fantastic as well, in particular the cold brewed drip coffee (over the latte). Light, not too sweet donuts and anything they make with fruit is made with REAL fruit, can you believe it?? I was skeptical of the raspberry because of the color, but it's not artificial and it's phenomenal. The peanut butter glazed was actually one of my favorites (surprising for me, considering all the other flavors) and you must try the maple bacon (they even one over a pal of mine who is against bacon-y desserts). Only a few "gripes" (and they are definitely not enough to keep me away!), I wish they had places to inside (and outside) to enjoy your donut - and i don't need a sit down table, but maybe a high-top to stand around, or a counter top next to the window to stand at to eat your donut and sip your coffee - no chairs necessary (think how a lot of the store front brewerys around town are set up). The parking lot is small- be prepared and car pool! Find street parking, park at Kroger and walk over? This luckily hasn't been an issue for me yet because I've biked or walked there so far. The only other thing would be some sort of labeling system for the donuts (nothing fancy) so everyone can make up their minds while in line and not have a dozen questions when it's their turn -that one thing would help A LOT. However, they are pretty brand new, have a FANTASTIC, above the rest, product and I have had a donut weekly since they've opened (good thing I bike/walk there!) so I will be going back and think they can only go up from here.

Is it just me or has Sugar Shack changed their donut recipe or do they have different bakers? I visited not long after they opened and bought a chocolate glaize which I thought looked and tasted as good as Country Style donuts on Williamsburg Rd (which really do have the best donuts in town). On my second visit, I again bought a chocolate glaize and noticed that they didn't look the same as on the first visit and after getting home and taking a bite, it didn't taste as good either as on the first visit. It didn't have that melt in your mouth consistency. But I decided to try them again so I went back a third time and bought a peach fritter, a cinnamon bun, and a chocolate glaize. Again the chocolate glaize donut did not look the same as on the first visit . They look like donuts you get from Dunkin Donuts and no longer look like the ones you get at Country Style. And it still didn't taste as good as the one on my first visit. It tasted like a donut from Dunkin Donuts but not as tough as DD's donuts are. The peach fritter was huge and very good as was the cinnamon bun but I'm sad to say, Sugar Shack donuts are just not the same melt in your mouth tasting donuts as they were when they first opened.

I ordered a maple doughnut and a cortadito. Let me say this, looking at the pictures I thought that I would walk in and order a cute little doughnut. No, these things were hugs and so sweet. I have a bit of a sweet tooth so it did the trick for me. It was big, and fluffy, and sweet and I could really taste the maple that reminded me of childhood pancakes. Yes, it was kind of pricy for a doughnut but, it was so big how can I complain. I just wish I had more space on that particular day to try some other flavors. I guess I will just have to make another visit.

Despite someone telling me not to come here, I did it anyway and was glad I did. This place is definitely the place for a donut fanatic to live it up! The flavors available are impressive and delicious (between this place's heath bar donuts and Cook Out's heath bar shakes, it's heath-heaven!), and I definitely think the airy nature of the donuts makes all the difference between them and their big-box competition. They have some COLOSSAL donuts pictured on their website and Facebook page as well, though my timing hasn't been quite good enough to snag one yet. This place makes each donut with TLC; that means great donuts, though fewer of them made. You have to be the early bird here to catch the donut! Now, DEALS: 1) Your first check-in on Yelp will net you a free house donut! Considering each donut is a dollar and change a piece, that's a nice freebie, 2) On many weekdays (not so much weekends), they will post on their Facebook page a special promotion they're doing for that day only that will net you a free donut. Look out for it! The only really negative thing I'd say here is their parking. If you live close enough to walk, WALK. Otherwise, prepare to do the parking space tango. I had to basically pirhouette just to get in and get out of here, and my car doesn't need the exercise, I do! Frankly, if you're looking to reward yourself, a donut here is the choice of champions. Overall: 4.0 stars --------------- Pros: -Donuts are unmatched in quality and taste by anywhere else in Richmond. -The daily deals can definitely help out in the price department. -Friendly staff and quick transactions make this a grab-n-go experience to be envied. Cons: -Parking is a major pain, and running into cars/people/beloved pets is still frowned upon in modern society. -Non-deal-days (AKA weekends) per-donut costs relegate this treat to the owners of bottomless pockets or unabashed donut addicts. -Get here early or not at all. These donuts sell like...well... hotcakes. That sounded weird.

Let me tell you about Sugar Shack Donuts ... First off these are no ordinary donuts, no sir, these are donuts of the Norse Gods (think Thor ... "hey there handsome ..."). They rise way, way above Krispy Kreme, trample competing Richmond donuts Dixie Donuts and have more variety than Duck Donuts could dream of (not saying I don't love all of those donut places - except Krispy Kreme ...). Sugar Shack has a variety of different flavors that rotate every 15 minutes, thus none of the donuts have labels. Not to worry - the kind people who run the shop are always happy to repeat what each and every single donut flavor is to anyone who asks. Some flavors that seem to always been around no matter the time of day: Butterfinger, Samoa, Peanut Butter of some sort and plain ol' vanilla with with M&M's, chocolate chips, chocolate drizzle ... you get the idea. If you are lucky enough to be at Sugar Shack when they have cake donuts YOU MUST TRY ALL OF THEM! Seriously though, I have never tasted something so perfect as Sugar Shack's cake donuts. The best cake donut flavors I've tried so far are: pumpkin spice and the blueberry muffin type thing. Really what it boils down to is that anyone, donut novice to donut snob, will love Sugar Shack Donuts.

This place is heaven on earth. Even a donut hater, such as myself, doesn't need to puff on a fatty to want to devour each and every flavor. I'm dropping them to a two star, I am tried of being treated horribly! Today I go in there at around 1:15 (8/9/2014) and other than the guy in front of us, we were the only ones in there. Well there is was no sign on the doughnuts and only 6 flavors that took the entire display!!! They had none of the specialties except maple bacon so again I could not try the samoa, apple fritter, or caramel apple... This worst part is there are no signs and a display that says to ask the flavor if there is no sign. Well I did, and the guy yelled the names at me in a rude manor not like he was making sure I could hear him, but because I was an inconvenience! Just because I do not look like a city boy doesn't mean I should be treated in a horrible manner. The only reason this place even does well is because it is pretty much the only non brand doughnut shop here that is not Dunken or Krispy Kreme. Once the new shop opens in Willow Lawn, I guarantee a lot more people will start going there as there is no way I am the only one treated bad here, the other people are probably just to afraid leave a bad review in fear of retaliation... Oh to top it all off, there was a guy making dough with flour all over his hands wiping it on his clothes and then goes back to working with his bare hands.. Eww, I do not want what ever is on your clothes in my food...

I'm definitely a regular here for a reason. The donuts and the staff are awesome. Maple bacon is probably my fav with Samoa in a close second. There's always a great selection and the baristas take great care with your coffee, especially if you have a speciality latte. Sometimes getting coffee is a little slow but it's totally worth it. If you want quick and shitty lattes, stick with the chains. My only gripe is that the parking situation at this place is usually a hassle. There's about 5 parking spaces, not including parking by the benches. The owner of the apartments behind the shop has a towing service ready to tow people just looking to pop in for donuts, which is really ludicrus considering there's only 2 cars in that lot whenever I've been there and been ballsy enough to park there.

Large selection of yeast donuts with multiple combinations of toppings and glazes. The espresso glaze and dough base were both good, but wish they were integrated a bit more. The red velvet cake donut was fresh, crispy on the outside with a sweet sugar glaze. Wish there were more cake donuts. Parking is tight but manageable.

After hearing rave reviews, I had to bring the family for a morning sugar rush. Specialty donuts- such as the Maple Bacon- are going to run you $1.90 each while the everyday Maple or Chocolate are going to be slightly cheaper. Purchasing a half dozen like I did will get you a 5% discount. The person at the counter seemed less enthused to answer our questions... so it may be helpful for this establishment to label the donuts in the display case. All in all, they are very tasty and my girls loves them!

I had the Oreo with strawberry icing. It was great. Not over-the-top sweet but still able to scratch that early morning sweet tooth itch. The staff were helpful and willing to go over the visual menu (not a written one, so they just told me what each one was).

I visit Richmond every now and then to see my sister and in-laws and saw that my sister "liked" Sugar Shack on her facebook page. My actual response was, "What is this?? How come I don't know about this place??" I'm all about unhealthy foods, so you know I had to make the stop. This place is located near the VCU campus' Bowe St Deck. It's on the corner of Lombardy and Leigh St. The space itself is quaint and nice for a local donut shop. Inside, there's a small window where you can see the workers creating your donuts by hand. Apparently, flavors vary throughout the day, so going early doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be able to try all the flavors at once. My sister went in the morning to pick some up for work and she was able to get a raspberry donut, while I came at noon and picked up a butterfinger/white frosting donut (that wasn't available when she came in). I also picked up a lemon (or was it orange? I can't remember now) zest glazed donut which was divine. Sugar Shack's donuts are light and fluffy, which is good in its very own way. Some people like a denser donut, but this isn't where you're going to find it. I would definitely still recommend people to stop by Sugar Shack though due to their awesome creative flavors! People seem to come from all over for their Bacon Maple Donut, but seeing as I'm not a fan of bacon, I passed on it. Prices for donuts are a bit expensive (for me, but I don't eat specialty donuts too often, so maybe this is how it goes). There's no half-dozen or dozen pricing, it all depends on which donuts you pick and they're just charged individually. And finally...coffee, I did pick up an Iced Toffee Latte...and while it was okay, it didn't taste strong enough (for a latte). My sister told me afterwards that Sugar Shack is one of the few places that cold-brews their drip coffee...so I'll definitely have to try it in the future!

Where ever you are... just stop what you are doing and head over to Sugar Shack Donuts now... RIGHT NOW. How have I been coming to Richmond for all these years and NEVER known about this place? The line wrapped around the inside and then out the door, we waiting about 20 minutes and it was worth every second. I got an assorted dozen to take to my mom as a thank you for letting my friends and I crash at her house and picked up a Bacon Maple Glaze for me! Oh my goodness... amazing. I was with four of my friends and all you could hear was the "mmmmmmmm" sounds... mostly coming from me! I was also totally thrilled when I saw that they offered the Cuban coffee Cortadito! I have been in search of this coffee for years and have been unsuccessful in the DC area (surprising I know). On my way home from Richmond I got a text message from my mother that she had eaten the Mocha donut and loved it. I know I will be back here again and again. PS... careful where you park here, a guy behind us in line parked on the street and in the 5 minutes he was there his car was hooked up to be towed. He paid him $100 to not impound it.

Had Sugar Shack twice, once from coworker and once on my own. Tried another time too but was not open at posted time. Great yeast style donuts. They are large and one will probably be enough but so hard to resist trying another. The glaze and maple bacon are my faves so far. The coconut is good if you like that, and the m&ms were maybe sugar overload. Oreos was very good too. Coffee (hazelnut latte) was some of the best I've had lately. Cons: Parking lot is small and you may have to park illegally People ordering a lot and supply can be sparse (hand made!) so by the time you get to the front a lot of varieties are gone. They are doing well with a great product, wish these guys continued success!

Great little independent donut shop. Didn't try the coffee, but it looks solid. Not a ton of options on donuts (maybe 10 when I stopped in), but they range from classic (glazed, cinnamon sugar) to creative (maple bacon, orange glazed, chocolate coconut). Working my way through a half dozen right now, and all are fresh, fluffy and flavorful. My only complaint is that I got there at 9 am on a Saturday, and they were out of a number of options, and the back kitchen didn't seem to be turning out any more. Unless the long line was a fluke, and I doubt it was, I'd expect better anticipation of donut demand. A great option for an indulgent breakfast.

Oh my God Sugar Shack, how I love thee. Easily one of, if not the best, donut places around. I have never had a bad experience in Sugar Shack out of the hundreds of times I've been. They always have a number of varieties of donuts, all made fresh. I know some people complain about there not being labels in front of the donuts, but really, it's often not that hard to figure out which donut is which flavor. If you don't know, the staff is almost always ready and excited to tell you what the flavors are. Definitely one of the friendliest staff of any food establishment I've been to. The shop itself is a little bit small, parking lot included, but it's not bad if you're a reasonable human being who doesn't get pissed off and inconsequential things. If you want some donuts, go to Sugar Shack, you won't be disappointed.

Coffee was not good. The barista seemed uneducated as how to pull a shot. Both my husband's and my cappuccino were bitter, which was very disappointing. On top of that, we had to wait 20 minutes for it to cool down because it was too hot. So, I'm sure the burnt milk didn't add a great flavor to the already bitter espresso shots. If their website didn't brag about Zeke's coffee, then I probably wouldn't have cared, but I was expecting a cappuccino as good as one from any of the coffee shops the NoVa/ DC area. With that said, donuts were amazing! Pretty to look at and fluffy and delicious to eat. I will definitely return to get a donut. But just a donut next time.

OMG, I am in love with Sugar Shack! I decided to check out SS. The staff and manager were super welcoming and kindly listed the doughnut flavors. Like other Yelpers mentioned, it would be helpful to have the flavors listed on cards, but perhaps, they have reasons for not doing so. There were so many flavors to choose from, but we finally decided on a salted caramel and a pina colada. Both were amazing and very fresh! I will be back and next time I will get more than just two....it is my duty to try all the flavors. Doughnuts: 5 Staff: 5 Location: 5 Parking: 3 Yes, they are so good 5+5+5+3 = a 5 star rating! I can forgive parking. Cheers!

Wonderful donuts! Always good! NEVER PARK IN THE LOT BEHIND/NEXT TO SUGAR SHACK! It's not owned by sugar shack and your car gets towed by the time you go in and buy your donut.

I Just tried this place out on Sunday. Unbelievable. I tried the cinnamon doughnut, traditional glazed, and vanilla/butterfinger. Heavenly is a fair word to describe the deliciousness! These doughnuts were a little thicker than i'm traditionally used to, but in a good way. They were soft and fluffy. Either way, highly recommended.

i got the espresso donut and i used the yelp deal which got it to me fo' free! unfortunately i was not impressed with the donut. parking is a nightmare so i got mine and flew the coop. as the name suggests , the donut is sweet, but sickeningly sweet and i was not a fan of the bread like texture of the donut here. eh, im glad i got to try it at least...

Best donut place in town/ever. The maple bacon donut will never disappoint and is always my standby. However I try to try a new one each time I go in. Anything strawberry flavored is excellent. You can actually taste strawberry flavor as opposed to just eating pink icing. I always hate to say this, because it's not locally roasted, but their coffee is probably the best in town. I will go just for coffee sometimes. My favorite time to go is Wednesday through Friday when the Goatocado food truck is out front. Their healthy quinoa bowls always make me feel better about my donut purchases.

They have always been cold when Ive eaten them. I wonder if my review would raise to a 5 star if they were warm. Nothing is wrong with these donuts. I like things decorated to look like cats.

Finally made the trip downtown to Sugar Shack Donuts this morning. The staff was very friendly and the line went by quick. I got the maple bacon doughnuts which were amazing! The doughnuts were soft and very fresh and the bacon was cooked to just the right crispiness. We also ordered the monster 18 inch doughnut which was huge! That would easily feed 10-20 people and came in an extra large pizza box.

I love this donut shop. The customer service from the ladies is always pleasant and the donuts a irresistible temptation of delectable flavors despite the calories and sugar.

Seriously, these doughnuts are as good as it gets. No joke. Their maple bacon doughnut. oh god. I am not kidding when I say that these doughnuts are AMAZING. Luckily for me, I get to pass this place on my way to work every single day. It's difficult not to stop. It's also difficult because my boss knows I love them and she brings them in by the dozen. If you haven't visited Sugar Shack then you don't know what it's like to have a REAL doughnut. Don't pay attention to those other places around Richmond that serve "doughnuts" because they probably aren't even real. Tehehe...I actually just haven't visited any other doughnut shops yet since I've already discovered the best one in town! Take care & savor it up!

Love this place so much. As soon as I tried my first donut, it was love at first bite. The glazed blueberry was my favorite, with the strawberry frosted donut running a close second. I surprised my kids with a couple donuts for a fun after school snack, let them get a bite in the car, and by the time they finished their homework, I had eaten them on stealth mode by myself. Whoops. Every time I've had a donut from here, they've been super soft, chewy, and fresh. What makes this place so great is the amazing, inventive flavors and topping combinations. They don't have signs in the display case because they are pushing out so many different donuts throughout the day, but the people who work there are super helpful and will go through a donut summary sesh with you. I thought peanut butter and bacon sounded a little strange, but it was pretty darn fantastic. If you want a fun, fresh, sweet treat, definitely hit this place up!

I'm going to keep this pretty short since everyone else has summed it up. Get a mix of what they have but keep in mind, Krispy Kreme makes a better glazed donut. Or better yet, pick up a half dozen here of assorted and then get a dozen glazed off the conveyor belt of Krispy Kreme. And like everyone else says...note the parking.

I got an espresso with chocolate and it was delicious! The donut was so light and fluffy and the frosting was rich and delicious! One donut is all you need. The atmosphere inside is also very warm and inviting. The ceiling in this place is also absolutely beautiful. The staff was friendly and humorous! I cannot wait to go back!

The best donuts on the East Coast! They may cost more than Dunkin Donuts, but they are 100 times better.

So I had heard about the hype of the Sugar Shack donuts and I figured I needed to give them a try while in town.m I stopped by on a Saturday around 3:30 to find out that they were all out of donuts. So I came back the next day and they had donuts so I decided to take a dozen home to Northern Virginia with me. The cinnamon sugar donut didn't make it out of the parking lot and it was delicious and probably my favorite. The rest of the donuts hung out while I drove back to NOVA all the while filling my car with the smell of donuts. I think I got a small sugar high from just smelling the donuts, and was kind of annoyed by them in the car by the time I made it home three hours later. I don't recommend being trapped Iin a small car with them for a long period of time. My husband downed two donuts right away and seemed to enjoy them. My kids also appreciated the flavors like m and m and sprinkles. I on the other hand wasn't impressed by the candy topped donuts, or unique flavors such as mint chip or maple bacon but much preferred the classic cinnamon sugar and chocolate glazed. Overall, pretty yummy donuts but I know to stay with the classics I love.

Great place to calm your sweet tooth cravings and your cowarkers will love you to boot. Their selection is very varied and they are not afraid to puch the limits and you shouldn't be either.
