Although I love everything they make, I have discovered that I am by no means a picky eater when it comes to Thai food. Can't find a thing to complain about, however I've been told by many people that this is by no means the best of what Thai food has to offer. The only complaint I can possibly make is that sometimes things are a bit inconsistant with how spicy they are and how spicy they ought to be.

I usually don't get calamari from Thai restaurants, but the calamari at Mom's Siam was delicious! Their curry dishes are also nice, spicy, and flavorful. Service was quick and I'd definitely try to come back again.

I've been here a few times and its been alright every time I go. I would actually give it a 3.5 if i could. The food is ok, it does come a little greasy. I usually have the Siam duck with Curry, it is one of the best dishes there, in my opinion. The one thing that really bothers me is that when you eat outside and sometimes inside there is an army of flys just waiting and it gets really annoying swishing your hand over your food every 30 seconds. Another note on the place is that they only split a check once and I think you have to have at least $15 to use your card. Overall its a nice place to grab some Thai Food when you want some. Great service, good people, ok food, and a nice patio if the fly army isn't around.

have been going here for the great curry for years and finally tried the thai tea martini... coconut rum, Thai tea and baileys so delicious!!!!!! dont forget to get some mango and sticky rice for dessert yum!

I've lived in Thailand and my wife is Thai. This makes me an expert in Thai food! ; ) I don't mind "Americanized" Asian food, and actually do like it (eg. Orange Chicken), sometimes. Mom's Siam definitely falls into this category, and this has to be expected with the clientele being Non-Thai. So in light of this, I understand, though to my wife, this place doesn't cook up anything authentic. We had the Green Curry, Chicken Pad See Ew, Beef Pad Prik, Fried Calamari, and Pumpkin Custard. The Calamari was pretty tasty with a light batter. The Green Curry didn't have enough of the curry taste and too much coconut milk. The Pad See Ew had good flavor, but numerous pieces of rice noodle that seemed hard or burnt. The Pad Prik was pretty good and I ate a fair amount. Avoid the "Pumpkin" Custard, it's really an Asian squash with egg custard (hard) in the center. The atmosphere was nice, but when there were patrons upstairs, it got a bit noisy sitting down below. Overall, it's a place that satisfied my craving for "Thai" food, just as Panda Express can satisfy my craving for "Chinese" food. I guess outside of Los Angeles, which has the largest Thai population in the U.S., we can only expect watered-down Thai food.

Great place for Thai in Carytown and modestly priced. I love their Pad Thai and Red Curry (and the wings). There is a nice patio to sit during Spring/Summer and enjoy your meal while people-watching in this hip part of the town. Highly recommended!! Also great for a date or just hanging out with some friends in a lazy afternoon!!
(4)Brianne C.
Decent Thai dishes in a slightly gritty, tropically themed, hip setting. The dumplings are particularly notable for their tender wrappers being filled with freshly chopped chicken, scallions, and vermicelli noodles. Sitting on the patio is lovely during the milder seasons. A nice, if unremarkable place for lunch.
(3)Mos D.
I'm never impressed and the only reason I go back is because my parents love this place. Everything tastes boring here as if the whole menu was the same dish with one minor variation. The hotness of a dish never matches the menu description OR your request. I feel like the food is take out quality at best.
(2)Lia S.
It was fine. Edible, but not at all enjoyable, memorable, or good. Service was iffy, they only take credit cards with a $15 minimum, and the food was kind of tasteless and bland. If you're looking for Thai in Carytown I highly recommend going to Ginger Thai over Mom's Siam.
(2)Lauren R.
I love Thai food and will try any Thai place I can. Mom Siam is good although they get bonus points not for the food but rather the simple face that they have a outside eating area. Service is okay and I do remember a few times with it being slower than I would like but other than that, the food is good and the outside dining option makes me come back.

A number of years ago, Mom's Siam had lovely food in a fabulous location and at a fair price. Sadly, this has not been the case for some time. This location has played host to at least two gay restaurant/bars that did brisk business, offering good food and prices only to be driven out by C'town prejudice as much as poor management internally. At least one, non-gay bar foundered round the gutter at W. Cary and S. Colonial before Mom's Siam moved in. Despite removing the cooling summer awning which covered the entire patio, Mom's still made outdoor dining a great pleasure in those first days. Sadly, NOT so now. Whether inside or out.....everything is filthy, sticky, gamey and the food always seems off, even if only slightly. Service is poor and prices higher than when the food WAS good. Why the dept. of health has not shuttered this place is beyond me. Everything is simply filthy and just nasty.
(1)Abby P.
I ordered the fried rice, which was good, but downside, I ordered the Yum Talay (a seafood salad), which I've had at countless other restaurants, and it was not good. The squid was filmy and tasted either undercooked or just poorly executed. Needless to say, it made me feel sick. I'd rather go elsewhere.
(3)Jeff S.
good food. very bad service. i ate here for lunch a half dozen times before i just decided that the service is a deal breaker for me. the deal breaker event: server was pushy toward extras like spring rolls, dessert, etc.. and then she wouldn't split our check and got attitude with us when we asked her to. no warning or apology. just refusal. so when we paid in cash she gave back $5 bills assuming we didn't need 1s for the tip! which would have equated to a 25% tip. no way after that little ordeal. i'm a good tipper too. 20% standard. the service is generally bad but this waitress pushed it too far. i give it two stars because the food is good. if the service were good i'd probably give three or possibly four as a lunch spot.

As a general rule when I begin to think of rating a restaurant I would start out at a 3... if things are intiquing or better than what I thought, the rating goes up... same things are true for lowering. I've been to Mom's Siam probably 20 times over the course of a 10 year span. While I know that its not the best thai I've tasted, there is always something special that I like. While sitting out on the patio drinking Singha and enjoying people watching, it hit me. I think I like the environment.... the food just ads to it. If it were amazing food that I would go higher on the rating. Truthfully there is nothing wrong with the food so dont get me wrong, its good...just had better. I tend to gravitate always toward the *INSERT MEAT HERE* and basil offerings on most Thai menus. In this case I ordered squid and basil. It came out tender with large pieces of squid. Very delicious with good sticky rice. Outdoor eating in carytown is few and far between, but the small patio at Mom's Siam on a summer night is pretty nice. ~

I love this place. Of the four Thai restaraunts currently located on Cary St., Mom Siam is my favorite, though Ginger and Thai Diner Too are also very good. The atmosphere is very casual and the service staff very friendly. I've had many items on the menu and have never been dissapointed, but the larb and pad thai are particularly good.
(4)Donald W.
A favorite restaurant for lunch. I began going to Mom's when she was at her previous location a block or so away. I personally like the family that runs Mom's Siam--Mom, Sonnie, Joe. They're good, friendly people. I've never had an entree at Moms I didn't like. My recent favorite has been the green curry dish. (I had it today!) And I rarely resist the Mango and Sticky Rice for dessert. (I had it today!) The crowd today at lunch was electic as you might expect in Carytown. I did notice that one diner is quite well-known in the Commonwealth of Virginia. His picture is posted just left of the door with Mom's family. Look at the pic only if you are a Democrat! *lol*
(4)Nic S.
The pad thai is ok, but the many of the dishes are greasy and loaded up with filler "food" (i.e. bamboo shoots and straw mushrooms). I find very few fresh veggies in their dishes. I have eaten at somewhere between 30 and 40 Thai restaurants around the country in my life and rank this one in the bottom ten.
(1)Kathryn S.
Had Moms Siam for the first time tonight. We got drunken noodles for take out and it was ready in 15 minutes. Reasonably priced and delicious! This has def become our go-to take-out Thai place!
(4)S A.
I like their foods, but they only accept min $15 to use a credit card. So it always hinders group of my friends to go eat there together..
(3)Ashley S.
This place was alright for Thai food, not too bad. The service is nice! The only downside was the food portion for the price. I ordered the panyang?? It was one of the curries but anyways, it wasn't my favorite but it was sweet, had a lot of coconut flavor, and had a really nice display on the plate. It's in Carytown and be sure to watch out for the spicy food, cause their spicy is pretty spicy.
(3)Reery K.
Love Mom's Siam. Great foods and friendly services. Should try their specail cocktails; Sabai Sabai, Mojito or Thai tea martini...very tasty;)
(5)Beverly W.
Great food! I love the fried tofu and the calamari. Beer was cold and the waitstaff very friendly.
(4)B L.
Pretty good..recommend seafood vs duck entrees...either way you can't go wrong...friendly staff and nice atmosphere..go outside if weather permits...
(4)Vicki C.
I think Mom's Siam is under-rated here on Yelp. It's not the best Thai food ever, but I think it is perfectly good for what it is. It's our default place for when we want to watch something at the Byrd theatre. They have a great list of $20 bottles of wine, so we'll order a red curry, a noodle dish, and a $20 bottle of riesling. I would characterize it as not a destination restaurant, but a good casual restaurant. We're always happy when we leave.
(4)Sonya S.
Wonderful restaurant. Fast service, great food, and in a great area.
(5)Stephanie K.
The Thai tea and Thai coffee are very good drinks. This is probably the best place that makes them. I decided to order the chicken green curry and requested a little spice. I noticed it wasn't as flavorful as the red curry but I did enjoy my meal. After my course, I got fried ice cream for dessert. This was hands down the most yummy ice cream I've had! The only complaint I have about this place is about how there was so many flies surrounding our table because we were seated near the door. Overall this is one of my favorite Thai restaurant. Its very affordable place to dine too.
(4)David Y.
Service-wise, it was kind of an odd experience. We went at an off-peak time (5 pm on a Sunday) so there was no one there, and I guess they were in the middle of a shift change because we interacted with 3 different people without really knowing who our server was. Either way, no biggie. However, the food itself was awesome! Can't go wrong with drunken noodles. My friends ordered appetizers and they were all tasty and fresh. We sat on the patio which was large, clean, and shady. All in all, it was a good experience and the food was super tasty!
(4)Huy H.
Maybe 2.5 stars? MAYBE. I've had food from here twice now, once for delivery (cash only) and most recently as dine-in. I'm trying to get over my distaste Thai food, propagated by restaurants such as this one but boy, is it hard when places like Mom's Siam has become the norm for this very distinct cuisine. The delivery we had was pretty decent, I believe I ordered the pad thai and the tom yum seafood soup. The pad thai had enough and decent flavor and had more than 3 shrimp for being $12+. It was good enough that I thought, hey, I'd eat here again with some friends. Well, last week, we did just that. At the restaurant I ordered the chicken drunken noodles and chicken satay as an appetizer. When the chicken satay came out, it was an odd pale yellow color and looked like it had been steamed and not grilled in anyway; there were four of them. When I cut into the first piece, the middle was still extremely pink, e.g. raw. My friend had the same issue with hers. I alerted the server and sent it back to the kitchen. About 5 minutes later, it seemed she had just brought back out the same skewers that were put back onto the range to finish cooking. Five minutes after that, she brought out a fourth skewer on its own plate. Now, I'm not completely up to date on my health code regulations, but is this even legal? To re-serve food that was sent back to the kitchen for being raw? Even if it is, from a restaurant etiquette they should have sent out new ones (and maybe even comped them). We ended up just asking them to take the appetizer off our check and sending it back, untouched, to the kitchen. They didn't make a fuss about it and were apologetic, to their credit. My chicken drunken noodles were completely lackluster. If you like small portions on really large plates, then this place for you. I was a bit leery of the chicken in my noodles after the appetizer debacle which may have shaded my experience of the entree. But overall, it was rather bland and greasy and nothing like the spiciness that is typical for drunken noodles (it is, after all, devised to treat hangovers or while drunk with its spiciness!). There was maybe three or so pieces of bell pepper but otherwise, no thai basil or other veggies which I missed. This last bit isn't necessarily specific to this Thai place, but I've noticed other places doing it to: increasing price for different proteins? Most of the noodle dishes start at $9.95 with a $1 increase each for pork/beef/seafood, etc. Thai food, and Asian food in general, isn't very expensive in the first place. Rice noodles are cheap and the amount of meat they include, and the lack of vegetables on the plate, doesn't do the price justice. On the plus side, their selection of Asian beers was good! Would I go back for just that? No. Not with literally several other Thai places within walking distance.

The Best Thai in RVA. The salmon is divine! Not fishy or fatty. Every time I have come the Salmon has been my friend. The Thai iced tea is hot or miss as times it can taste watered down. The spices and veggies and nicely done. The service is on point with the staff always going the extra mile to make visits delightful. I am a regular and will alway refer friends to visit Mama Siams.
(4)Carter S.
I am actually quite confused by all of the low stars for Mom's Siam. In my opinion, this is the best Thai in Richmond! Their pad thai, green curry, red curry, and massaman curry are all so so good. I am also obsessed with their House Siam Salad (ask for another cupful of their sauce because it is amazing) and their fried tofu. Also an added bonus--they are one of only a few restaurants that have a nice seating area in Carytown. There is usually parking as well on the street right off of the restaurant, which is really helpful when trying to park on a crowded Friday night! All in all, a favorite of mine in Richmond. One last thing-- they are usually a bit picky about credit cards (it may be a 15 dollar minimum?) and larger groups. I'd put a few extra bills in your pocket before heading out if you're going with a bunch of people. Take out: easy, fast, and packaged well. Many thanks!
(4)Tiombai R.
Only had drinks but the service was not good...it took forever for our waitress to take orders. She never came to check on the table. Not sure I will coming back here.
(2)Lai S.
Came here bc it was the only place that had available outdoor seating.. Sticky rice had a few pieces of lint/hair or something..? Really disappointed with the wings we didn't even eat them-- nor did my daughter I have NEVER had chicken that bad EVER. It was like it was boiled then put in tempura and fried with NO salt or ANYTHING .. The seafood drunken noodle would have been great if it wasn't so salty.. Good amount of seafood. The best dish we had was probably the spicy lemon chicken my husband had flavorful and not salty. Service was ehh only 1 waitress, who took ur order, brought u ur food and check, and cleaned the tables. Maybe Sunday's are their slow days? Overall blah
(2)Sarah S.
No. Expensive, dry, tasteless, food came out way too fast for it to be just freshly made. The seafood tasted like salt and water. I wish I could say more, but I was not impressed at all. Not many people here either, it's like they knew. Please go anywhere else. I spent an hour of my life and $16 that I will never get back.

First off, my boyfriend and I are Thai fanatics. We get it almost everywhere we travel. With that being said we've had a wide range of experiences. After hearing great reviews about this restaurant, we thought we would give it a try. The service was not at all what expected, our food took a long time to come out. Which would be understandable had it been a busy evening, but it wasn't.
(3)Nathan M.
I have been to this restaurant several times with my wife and kids, and even my friend from NC who loves Thai food, and we all love the food here. I am a huge fan of Thai food, and my wife is half Thai, and she and I really enjoy this place. We have always gone during the day, and service has been fine, not sure how it is at night when it's probably more crowded. This is my favorite authentic Thai restaurant on Cary st., although Thai Diner is also a good one.
(5)Irene E.
The fried squid was ok, not really thai flavor besides the dressing. Drunken noodle was just midly spicy but marked two *s... Overall not too impressed by the food compared with other thai restaurants in RVA area.
(3)Ellen H.
Surprised at how much I liked the food here! I had heard some bad reviews, so I was wary, but it was close and my friend and I were tired. We ordered the garden roll and some dumplings, both of which were okay, but nothing extraordinary. My friend ordered their Pad Thai and I ordered their duck dish with rice. Man, was that duck GOOD. Moist, well-cooked, perfect marinating, just enough spice to wow it up, and looked phenomenal. The execution and the presentation, phenomenal. I split this dish into dinner that night and lunch the next day. I really really didn't have room for dessert, but I had been craving fried ice cream (so bad!) for so long that I just had to get it. Initally, we were going to share it, but we each got our own. I devoured that thing. Gone. For the food, I would go there again. But mind you, they ARE at Carytown pricing. My duck dish was 13 and some change and, while I believe good food is worth paying for, for the portion, I wasn't exactly thrilled at the price. But otherwise, great service, excellent food, great ambience. Hats off to you!
(4)Allison R.
I've been to Mom's Siam twice now, and once it was 5 stars, and the other time 1 star. So weird to have such variable experiences. Both times I had the Siam Chicken (stir fried chicken with watercress, broccoli, snow pea, green bean, green onion, and ginger), and both times it was really good; loved all of the veggies that were included in the meal. The only complaint is that on the second visit, some of the snow peas weren't properly cleaned and still had the stringy end left on -- made me choke a little and had to excuse myself to the restroom! The husband told the waiter about this, and he seemed less than concerned. I'm not sure what we were expecting, but a little concern would have been nice that someone wasn't preparing the veggies properly. What varied so much is the service. The first time, our waiter was incredible -- really attentive and helpful, and made me want to come back. Our second visit, we went on a quiet Sunday afternoon, and barely saw our waiter; he was completely absent. Although I bet we end up back at Mom's Siam, we certainly won't go running there.
(3)Kelly K.
The Pad Thai was so sweet it was disgusting and hard to eat. My boyfriend is a literal garbage disposal and refused to eat it. Decided to go here after we went to Mom Siam 2. Don't go to this one.. go to the one in shockoe if you go at all.. yuck.. egg rolls and wings are pretty good though
(2)Sally H.
Loved the food! We stumbled upon this place as we toured Richmond. We ordered the drunken noodles and the soft shell crab pad Thai. It was amazing and the portion was big! Customer service was great as well. I would definitely go back!
(5)Meg H.
The food was really good. Skittle too spicy for me but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The staff was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the food.
(4)Shanthi W.
I personally think that Mom Siams has the best Thai in richmond! I always get the drunken noodles and they never fail me! Be warned the food is spicy but it's so worth it and they cater to your level of "spiciness" which is nice! The inside is very cute and casual! Love it here
(5)Thessa T.
Oh Mom's Siam, you had so much potential. You were hyped to me so much. But when it takes 2+ hours to get my food and your waitstaff has as much empathy/ability to care as a limp carrot, you lose my business. My friends and I decided to take a break from Ginger Thai Taste (A FAR SUPERIOR THAI RESTAURANT A FEW BLOCKS AWAY) we really didn't know what we were in for. We got inside, sat down (with me unfortunately right next to the door on a very cold night) and ordered some A+ sounding 'tizers. And waited. And waited. And? You guessed it. Waited. An hour passes Our server came back, and asked us if we wanted to order our entrees. We asked him where our appetizers were, as there were only three of them. Two of those being soup. He said that they were "swamped with pickup orders" and that our order had been overlooked. He didn't apologize. My friends and I shrugged at one another, in no rush, and ordered the entrees. Plot twist: we waited another hour. A different waitress approaches our table with our appetizers and sets them down. At this point we're all ravenous and getting hangry, so we gobble them down and wait some more. She returns 30 minutes later and says "You all didn't order entrees, did you?" Cue the annoyance. At this point my friends and I just decide to pay for our appetizers and go somewhere else. I stand to find our original waiter, he makes eye contact with me, rushes into the kitchen as I approach, and carry out one of my friend's meals and sets it down in front of her. We wait 15 minutes for the other dishes to trickle out. Seems like someone wanted us to stay put. To add salt to that wound, the food wasn't that good. At all. My friend's curry tasted so strongly of pineapple they couldn't eat it. It was like ingesting a pineapple lipsmacker. My one non-vegan friend's chicken was undercooked. We had sat there for around 3 hours to get mediocre food and a frankly apathetic waiter, who charged us fully and half-heartedly apologized about the wait. I ain't neva coming back. This place reeks.
(1)Sukanya P.
The best Authentic Thai in Richmond. They have a nice outdoor patio and upstair private seating. Really good drinks and 12 draft beers. My favorite dish are Padprik Khing Curry, Siam Wild Pork, Chicken Basil, Green Curry, Chicken Ginger.
(5)Megan B.
Is say my overall experience was just meh, good, not great. I probably wouldn't go back. We ordered the squid yum as an appetizer, it was a marinated squid salad. That was delicious and definitely the best part of the meal - spicy, flavorful, and very fresh. For dinner, I order the chicken pad see ew which I normally go CRAZY for, but their dish was just okay. It was definitely missing something and wasn't as flavorful as it should have been. My date ordered the pad thai and that was even more disappointing - it was good but it did not taste like pad thai. It was too sweet and had a sauce that tastes more like sweet chili sauce than the normal pad thai sauce. Overall, my experience wasn't bad, but I'll definitely be trying other thai places in town.
(3)Christina D.
This is my favorite Thai in Richmond. The calamari is so crisp and perfect. I always get the Panang chicken because it's sweet and perfect. The crispy rolls are the best I've had anywhere. The service is great, and It's the perfect spot for outside dining. Crispy bananas for dessert are a fun treat too!. I only wish they delivered out here to Rocketts Landing!
(5)K D.
After a day of sitting by the pool in the hot sun my friends and I wanted some basic Thai food, nothing exceptional, which Mom's Siam promised to be. However, even though our expectations were already low somehow this place still managed to miss the mark. They forgot to put the peanuts and the Pad Thai sauce on both my and my friend's order of Pad Thai....pretty key ingredients, I would say. We got it to-go, so by the time we got home we couldn't remedy the situation. Swing and a miss.
(1)Whitney B.
I went here with a couple friends about a month ago. The waitress was really nice and the food was good. I can't recall any stand-outs, except for the Mango and Sticky Rice, which was DELICIOUS!
(4)Marie S.
Got takeout. Panang with tofu and beef with broccoli, and some fresh rolls. Food was ready super quick, all ingredients seemed fresh and the tofu was done well (some other places really drop the ball on this one making it all rubbery and gross). Will be back.
(4)Katie P.
Best place for Thai in Richmond. Great Service! Definitely get the sun-dried beef appetizer.
(5)Lane F.
Best Thai food in Richmond! Try the Shrimp Tempura and the Green Chicken Curry.
(4)Lisa G.
Atmosphere and service are 5 stars; food is just three. Hang out on the patio on a nice day and watch the passersby on the edge of Carytown. Food comes quickly, they check on you when appropriate and bus the tables promptly so that the trash on your table doesn't accumulate. The pad Thai is good, but a little bland. The peppers in the drunken noodles are cut way too large, and it's a little bland, too. Prices are average.
(3)Michelle D.
Gross. Ordered pad Thai, mango with sticky rice and Thai tea for carry-out. My mango had a small black hair on it. What a disappointment, especially for $5 a pop. Pad Thai flavor was good but there was a small piece of what looked like an ingredients label mixed in with the noodles. What the heck. Thai tea was also good, but just like another reviewer wrote: it was mostly ice. Yeah, I won't be coming back here anymore. My stomach feels queasy thinking about what I just ate.
(1)Jacqui R.
My date and I actually stopped into Mom's Siam for a glass of wine but ended up sampling the Pad Thai as well. We were on a trip from the Hampton Roads area and before we headed back we wanted to find a place with a nice patio. We were walking around Carytown and decided to stop into this place and honestly, I don't even think I knew that it was a Thai place when we first sat down. Lucky for me though, I LOVE THAI. We decided on the Pepperwood Pinot Noir wine which was very nice - good flavor, cheap bottle. We also split a pad thai which comes with chicken and a couple of large shrimp. It was really fantastic, great flavor. It started to get a little chilly outside so our waitress graciously moved us to an inside table, however we were taken upstairs were it was pretty packed, tiny and a little warm. I can definitely vouch for the food here but I'd try to get a table either outside or at least downstairs.
(4)Jolinda S.
My mom and I went to eat here over Mother's Day weekend on Saturday for an early dinner. There was no wait at all and we sat outdoors on the relatively large patio since the weather was perfect. Our waitress was attentive without being annoying and our drinks and food came out quickly. I had the Tomkhar Kai soup, which has chicken, coconut milk, cilantro, lemongrass and lime flavors. If you're a fan of pho, get this soup. It's so good. I ordered the lemon chicken for my meal which was also great. For the food alone, the review would be 5 stars. I've always had great apps and main courses here. So why does this only get 3 stars? The simple observation that my mom made..."You know, our waitress reminds me of somebody who's on something." "Yeah, Mom, that's probably because she IS on something." You've got Mom in your name and you've got waitresses who are hungover / out of it on Mother's Day weekend? Not cool Mom's Siam. However, I will go back because the food is amazing. The patio outside has the best seating and is about as large as the area of indoor seating. The indoor decor is a hodgepodge of "thai-looking" stuff, and it can look dingy and worn sometimes. The bathrooms are tiny and have an odd layout, but are always clean. I'm not sure I'd go here to mingle / meet people at the tiny bar but it's a good place for a group of friends that want to grub.
(3)Erin C.
I really like Mom's Siam. It's all the way at the end of Carytown and it's a great place to sit outside on a nice day and enjoy light but filling food. They have umbrellas and a fan in case it gets too hot and the indoor area is nice too. I've never had bad service here and they have a good selection of vegetarian dishes. They serve it American spicy, generally, so if you really want it hot, make sure you let them know you genuinely want Thai hot. Extensive wine and beer list and a decent selection of cocktails. I'm told they do private parties. Alison mentioned that some of the noodle dishes can get oily and that's probably the only complaint I have about the food here. You have to request sticky or brown rice if you want it, otherwise your food will come with white rice.
(4)Christian B.
Inconsistent. Occasionally you'll get a well made dish, but for me that was 5 years ago. Ordered delivery this eve - Panang Tofu, 2 tomyum soups, fresh springroll (tofu) and two Thai iced teas. Panang was ok - would have suffered more had they not provided a small ramakin of chili paste. Tomyum not that great veggies cooked to death - more sour than spicy. Springrolls were poorly wrapped, they must not have been rolled fresh as the tofu was dried out. Weird bland sauce. Thai iced tea 2.50 for a small cup 94% ice, 4% condensed milk, 2% Thai tea. The tea was not delivered initially the delivery guy very politely offered to go pick them up. Upon returning only brought one. Mom siam owes me 2.50 - and an hour of wasted time.

This past Friday evening, we attempted to enjoy a laid-back, hangover-reducing Thai food experience on one of the best patios in Carytown. I don't know what it was, but that one night the whole block was being attacked by flies - no fun! Everyone was getting seated outside and then moving inside after about 5 minutes of swatting. Totally not Mom's Siam's fault, and the staff was super pleasant and efficient about moving folks inside. I started with an iced Thai coffee, as they make one of the better ones in town, and split an order of dumplings, which were incredibly delicious. Unfortunately, our main dishes (ginger chicken for the girl and drunken noodles for me) were far too bland, making their "heat rating scale" irrelevant. Tasty, but nonetheless disappointing when you were expecting a bit of spiciness. I guess the best part was the service, as all the staff seemed to be in the right places at the right time with a good attitude, despite having a totally packed restaurant. I've never had a bad experience here, but I really wish they'd spice their dishes up a bit.

We were on our way to Secco for my birthday dinner but parked in front of Mom Siam's and all of a sudden I realized how long it had been since I had had Thai food so we gave it a shot. We ordered four appetizers - some hot some cold, all spicy - and were thrilled. Particularly the duck salad with perfectly cooked duck. They also had a drink I had never heard of before called a Sabi Sabi made with Thai Rum and muddled basil. Amazing. It was the perfect accompaniment to the meal. We went back another time, did the appetizer thing again and were, again, thrilled. This time also had the mango and sticky rice dessert which was pretty good. Maybe next time we will be able to resist all of the delicious appetizers and get down to some main courses because they all sound delicious.

This review is solely for the delivery expeirence, and as far as delivery/to go Thai goes, both the food and the service has been really good quality and consistent.

I always have better experiences here in the summer out on the patio. I LOVE the Green & Red curries, as well as the Pad Thai. I don't even like Pad Thai usually. I am not a huge fan of peanut flavors in Asian food, but the peanut isn't overpowering here. Pretty decent beer and wine offerings - bottles are priced well to share. The food is great, though I wouldn't say it's farrrrrrr better than some of the other Thai offerings on Cary Street. However, if it's a nice day definitely choose Mom's Siam for the patio!

I really like the patio here but the food is just okay. So, there aren't many big patios in Carytown, but the one here is spacious with umbrellas and big tables. I like. There's a good specialty cocktail menu, an affordable wine list, and a ton of wines that are just $20 a bottle. I like this too. It makes for a perfect way to while away a sunny afternoon or warm weekend night. I really think the food is just okay, though. I've gotten apps, salads, entrees and everything is good, but not as good as other Thai cuisine. The beef is always kind of chewy, so I usually stick with chicken and tofu. Service is also just okay. On a recent visit, we had to ask three times to get water and the waitress rarely offered refills on alcoholic beverages, instead she had to be flagged down. I will continue to come here to eat outside, but don't make it by much when my only choice is eating inside.

When the weather is nice, and you are craving Thai food, Mom Siam fits the bill. It's got a great outdoor patio where you can people-watch while you eat, complete with comfortable cushioned chairs. It gets pretty busy when the weather is nice, but it's worth the wait. The food is good- not knowing much about Thai food, I think it tastes reasonably fresh, and light. The only thing I've had here that I didn't like was the lemongrass soup (it tasted a bit fishy for me)- my ginger chicken was very pleasant, and my thai iced tea was sweet and creamy. I do think their prices could be a little lower given the portions, but you're paying for location. They also have a fully stocked bar, so this is a great option when you want to catch up with a group of friends.

After walking on Cary Street, we were starving so we stopped by for a quick hot dinner. After a week of sandwiches, I was dying for Egg rolls :) and pumkin curry. Awesome dish...I also ordered the typical Thai ice tea and was satisfied. Coming from the bay area, this Thai place was not disappointing giving the clientelles were mostly non-Asians. The owners are Thai so I was more assured when they were all speaking Thai :) Clean location and very nice waitress. SErvice was quick and the bar was open and very homy atmosphere to it. Did not use their lady's room so cannot comment on that aspect.

Man. So Mom's Siam. I'm not going to rate you unless they make me, Mom's Siam, because we used to be very close. I guess what I'm saying is I'm not objective anymore. I've lost my view point, and I miss you. I really do. But I'm just not happy with who you've become, with your snazzy bar and fancy plates with so little on them. I guess I'm trying to tell you that I've been harsh, I've been wrong, I've been right. And sure, maybe there's only another block between us now, but it feels like crossing forever. I miss the food you used to serve, and every time I saw those blank menu pages after you came back, I got excited. But they stayed blank, and I stayed away. I wish you'd come around again, but... I'm afraid I CAN quit you. And I'm afraid I have.

We happened upon this place due to the specials menu: crisp fried whole rockfish and soft shell crab pad Thai. Both were pretty good, not super amazing, but the service was polite and prompt and they were very accommodating. I will say for the price of the pad Thai the bulk of the noodles didn't seem high. As one poster here noted, lot of filler with bean sprouts.

I love Mom's Siam! If I can't stop in to dine, I will place an order to go. They usually have my order ready in 5-10 minutes, it's always accurate, hot and tasty! Why aren't you eating at Mom's? They are sooo yummy!

Great beef red curry and pad thai. Would go back again!

We came to Mom's Siam for a late afternoon lunch/early dinner and I thoroughly enjoyed myself! The location couldn't be in a more perfect spot, right on Cary Street. We were lucky for a sunny afternoon and got a spot on the outdoor patio. The location is great for a warm, summer night because what can be better than enjoying thai food outdoors?! The staff was very friendly and the food came out pretty quick. Great pad thai with decent prices!

Great place - ate outside - great service - friendly. I got the Cashew Nut medium spicy with Tofu instead of chicken (I am a vegetarian). Came rapidly tasted wonderful. It was not hot enough but they brought a pepper paste that was very tasty and it made it hot enough. Highly recommended.
(5)Steve K.
They have great Siam Chicken and accommodated a group of nine with a smile. Love the out door dining option.

A nice place to eat. You won't feel let down if you eat here, nor will you feel like you've found your new favorite restaurant. A pretty place to eat on the patio during the Spring/Autumn. Our table had drunken beef noodles, shrimp curry, chicken and broccoli and some kind of spring rolls. Everything was good and totally adequate yet not really mind blowing. I found the curry to be overly sweet and unappetizing. They have a great bar selection. The reason I knocked them a few stars is there were a TON OF FLIES on the patio. It was disgusting! It got to the point where you could hardly stop waving your arm long enough to pick up your fork. It made me wonder if there is an alley filled with composting trash right next door or something. Flies were inside, too, when we stopped in to use the restroom. Aren't there ways to control this? Anyway, if they get a buzz zapper or a piece of fly paper I'll be back for a satisfying Thai meal. Until then, Mom Siam!

There are way too many people clamoring to go here for how boring it is. At first, I was impressed by our drinks - I had a sabai sabai, which is delicious and the only reason I would ever enter Mom Siam again - but when the food came out it was so disappointing. Just all bland and tan. No spice. It was sad in light of what we could have gotten at Ginger up the street.
(1)Rachel P.
Used to love it, now I don't even like it. Whan Whan Whaaaaan. I think I am now jaded by delicious Thai that I have tasted while living in Cali. Everything lacks in flavor, ingredients are cheap and flavors just aren't good. Sad Story.
(1)Alison M.
I like Mom Siam. Plus: Its got a very nice outdoor patio. The food is authentic and delicious. Minus: Plates are a little smaller than some other Thai places around town. Some of the noodle dishes are pretty oily.
(4)Jason W.
The food here is decent but not spectacular. Ordered the chicken panang very hot which wasn't that hot at all. Service is good. Stay away from the bar tables near the restroom. The odor of urine was unbearable! We requested to be reseated which they did without issue. Almost as if it were a fairly common request.
(3)Kristen M.
This place was AWFUL! I had the worst wonton soup of my life. The fresh spring roll was all rice noodles and the dipping sauce tasted like old duck sauce left in the sun. Thank God they had cheap beer.
(1)Mercedes M.
While the staff was attentive and it had a nice funky vibe - the food here was really below average. Their dumplings were soggy and dry at the same time, the satay had no flavor, and it had not bright flavor at all. I would *not recommend* checking this place out.

my menu was moldy. seriously, the menu had mold growing on it. how on earth am i supposed to eat at a place that has moldy menus? i had to get up and wash my hands again after picking up the menu. i felt like i was in an episode of gordon ramsey's kitchen nightmares. so i went to the restroom to wash my hands. the toilets had moth balls in them. i can't really describe how much it kills your appetite to walk into a room that smells like urine and moth balls. over all the place just didn't seem clean. it seemed like it need a good scrubbing. there were flies everywhere and everything just seemed scuzzy. the food was pretty bleh, and all i could think about was how nasty this place is. we got the spring rolls which consisted of brown lettuce and sprouts, and some sort of gelatinous sauce. i couldn't even touch it. our entree's came out - duck curry and beef basil - and were pretty mediocre. the beef basil was supposed to be spicy. i guess by spicy they meant salty. it was literally four small pieces of beef swimming in a sea of salty gravy, a few peppers and a boat load of onions. the duck curry actually wasn't that bad, but after the moldy menu my mind kept thinking about how dirty the kitchen must be. definitely wasn't worth the $50 we spent on dinner and i won't be back. and i'll be sure to tell everyone i know about how dirty the place is and about the moldy menus.

Lunch outside on a beautiful sunny day. Food was fresh and hot. Spicey tuna with steamed greens was excellent. The wait staff was attentive not hovering. Great experience. Definitely would go back.

Decent place to get Thai food. The outdoor patio is a fantastic place to enjoy a dinner out. The food, unfortunately is a bit bland and underwhelming. From an atmosphere perspective this is probably the best Thai place in town. From a food quality perspective, there are other restaurants with better quality (Beauregards most notably).

I hate when a return visit to a fave restaurant leaves me disappointed and wondering why I ever loved it. Sadly, this happened to me with Mom Siam recently. Maybe it's the economy, but my friend's dish, normally served with a slew of mixed veggies, was practically all onions. Our summer rolls had hardly any shrimp, mostly just bean sprouts. Everything seemed to be cut back to mostly the cheap ingredients. It was a bummer. We'll probably only go to Thai Diner Too from now on. Sigh.

I went to Mom's Siam with a group of 6 and when we arrived they only gave us 5 seats. After trying to flag someone down to get an extra seat, they very reluctantly gave it to us. Not off to a good start. I remember the last time I went to Mom's Siam I sat outside and was surrounded by flies, creating an overall unenjoyable experience. That wasn't their fault so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. This time I sat inside and the place still didn't impress me. The service was very slow and the food, quite frankly, is unimpressive. The curries, which are the reason you get Thai food, are essentially the same in terms of flavor and I left craving... something. I don't know what. It just wasn't satisfying. Needless to say I won't be coming back to Mom's Siam unless I'm dragged there. Why go when Ginger Thai is so much better?
(2)Cindy E.
Extremely flavorful Thai food in a very quaint building. For an appetizer, I tried something I can't remember the name of but highly recommend. They were like spring rolls, filled with curry and sweet potato. So amazing. My entree was the chicken fried rice because my friend said they have the best fried rice ever. She was right. I've never had it so perfect. Meanwhile, I sampled her entree which was the Pad See-ew with Tofu. That has become a new fave. So has Mom's Siam.
(4)Page E.
Prices good. Food out fast and friendly service. Chicken Pad Thai extra hot is my go to dish. Nice patio in warm weather.

All I can say is YUM!!! Absolutely delicious food and a quaint atmosphere. And of course, love that it is in Carytown which is such a fun area. I definitely recommend. So far I have yet to have a dish I haven't liked!
(5)Shaye N.
Mom's is my go to for thai take out. I usually order the drunken noodles. I love how they don't mess around with the heat level. It's nice and hot to start with and I don't have to request extra spice. Delicious! They're super fast and have reasonable prices. I'll keep coming back.
(4)Danielle W.
It's not always easy to find true vegetarian Thai food (i.e. the old fish/oyster sauce don't ask, don't tell). Our waitress was very accommodating and seemed excited to share with us all the menu items that were vegetarian. She even picked out a vegetarian appetizer for us. Prices are reasonable and the outdoor seating is nice and relaxing.

Given that I now (practically) live across the street from Mom's Siam, I figured I would give it a crack. Typically my go-to Thai spot is Ginger, it takes a lot to sway my mood away from them. The staff there was very warm and friendly, and the interior kitschy and slightly cluttered. Where they completely missed was the Pad Thai I ordered. Now I really mean it when I say this: it had NO flavor. Literally, none. The chicken was bland, and the noodles / misc ingredients were totally vanilla. About the only flavor I detected was the fish paste - and definitely not my favorite taste of Thai cuisine. It's really a shame, I would probably go here all the time, given my proximity to them, and how nice their staff was. But Ginger simply brings more flavor to the table, or in my case, the take-out container.

Back in the day, Mom's Siam was my go-to thai place. Cheap, generous portions, outdoor seating... there wasn't much not to love. The last few times I've eaten there, however, have been less than stellar. Not bad, but not the greatest. Whenever I'm craving thai, I typically order one of two options : pad thai tofu with cashews or fresh spring rolls and coconut soup with tofu. Although I'd like to think I'm pretty adventurous, I'm just so enamored by both of these orders that I just can't stray. Needless to say, I've eaten all three of these items at Mom's Siam multiple times. The last time I ordered pad thai, there was just something off about it. It wasn't as flavorful as I remembered it being, and the texture of the noodles wasn't ideal. The spring rolls, which I shared with a friend, also didn't live up to previous spring roll experiences. I'm hoping it was just an off day, because Mom's Siam has been good to me in the past. The soup, on the other hand, has never lost its flavor or its appeal. But a word of warning - if you order take out, the soup portion is much smaller than what you received dining in. In fact, the portions seem smaller on all the takeout dishes (unless my experience was a fluke). I was really disappointed when I ordered take-out a few months back. We had friends visiting from out of town and after a day of hanging out and catching up, we realized we should probably get some food into our systems. We decided on thai and I was so excited to share Mom's Siam with them. When we got home with the food, the containers were little more than half full, and most of us were left hungry after the meal. Yes, my friends enjoyed the food for the most part, but being hungry after eating dinner is not usually a good thing. It's not all bad, though. Like I said, the soup has always been very flavorful and the portions are generous when dining at the restaurant itself. Lesson learned: Don't order take-out unless you're only looking for a snack. It's worth a shot to sit outside on their large patio... even if you're just sipping thai iced tea!

'Twas freezing out as we ducked into this small corner Thai restaurant. We were seated at the corner large table (not the booths) where there were curtains covering the entrance to somehow retain heat. Unfortunately, the cold just kept on seeping in gusts at a time. And here starts our food adventure. It's not bad, the setting I mean. There was a huge mural, good lighting, few decorations here and there. Plus, the service was kind and our waters constantly refilled. Major downside? The taste was completely and utterly bland. Even though the amount of food that was given barely justified the price ($10.95 up to $18.95), it's just not good. Not a bit. Food: 1. Pad Thai with spice (must request spice) -- it's one of the only dishes tasted that has any flavor at all. The regular Pad Thai without requested spice has zero flavor. 2. Lardna Talay ($10.95) -- terrible bland taste like water plus a little soup flavor. Fortunately my disappointment was only mediated by the three large bland-tasting scallops, some shrimp, and squid. Otherwise, the flat noodles also just tasted like water. Bleh. Hunger makes one eat it and I'm not one to waste food. 3. Panang Curry -- apparently a decent dish given the other lackluster plates. Perhaps my only recommendation out of the foods we tried. It smelled delicious and the taste wasn't terrible, hooray! 4. Fresh shrimp roll appetizer ($3.95) -- includes two rolls with peanut sauce. Quite good but somewhat expensive given the amount. In other words, if you come here, be prepared to stick with the curries and perhaps a fresh shrimp roll appetizer. I'd avoid venturing into the non-curry territories unless you are sure they taste good, lest you experience the same disappointment we did.

As some of the reviews stated, my once-weekly Thai place started to become really inconsistent last year. After taking a brief hiatus, we returned this year and the food has been consistently good. We've gotten takeout 3 times just to dip our toe in the water to see if things had improved. That first takeout was incredible. Back to its former glory. Still not sure if it was a fluke, we tried again. And the next takeout experience was also awesome. And the one last night was... again.... amazing. I think I'm a believer again. Maybe they just tried a bad chef, or maybe they tried to save money with lower quality ingredients, who knows.... But unless those 3-in-a-row experiences were coincidences, Moms Siam is back to being my favorite Thai place and I would go there without hesitation. Update: There is still the occasional inconsistency, but I generally think this is a solid choice for Thai and still the best option in Richmond. Plus, you can't beat their patio.
(3)Em S.
A decent place for good Thai food. Like most Thai places, there are plenty of vegetarian options. Tofu pad thai and jae curry with eggplant and vegetables are both delicious choices. The food is quite tasty and can hold its own very well in Richmond. The restaurant has an upstairs seating area inside, and one can imagine it used to be a bar or saloon before getting an artistic makeover into a Thai restaurant - albeit there is still a bar inside.
(4)Brandon H.
This is a shame because the food is actually really good but I had a bug walking around on my egg roll one time and I shrugged it off. When I went back again I had a huge hair in my rice. Not going back unless it's clear they tightened up
(3)Luke P.
You can't go wrong with Mom's Siam. It's not exceptional, and it's possible it's the third best Thai place in Carytown, but it's very consistent and dependable. It's not hit or miss - you're going to get what you expect every time. Everything appears to be freshly prepared, and the cooks are better at integrating vegetables into their main courses and using onion to really add a lot of flavor than some of the other places. It's got some atmosphere, but it definitely needs a little more done to the place to make it more appealing. It's dark and can feel very closed in and crowded, even if their are few people there. Remember to ask for some pepper when getting the spicier dishes - they default to fairly bland. The Thai hot is just too hot, but they're next level down is right on.
(3)Elijah C.
I eat here between 1 and 4 times a week... and I would describe myself as the world's pickiest eater. They laugh at me because each time I dine, I order the Garlic Chicken. I'm predictable. I'm Vanilla. But I love that Garlic Chicken. It's like crack for me. And it's consistently good which keeps me coming back... and in the poor house. ;-)

Yum!

Mama Siam, housed in lower Carytown, is a true find for Richmond Thai fans. The only downside is lack of easy parking, but keep driving in circles and you'll find something! The food is freshly prepared with authentic, top grade ingredients. I ate there last night with friends and were impressed by the high quality and alacrity of food and service. Another plus, you are literally less than a block away from BEV'S ICE CREAM, with homemade on the spot gelato, sorbets and my personal favorite, fully loaded ice cream, all freshly made that afternoon. Mama Siam is reasonably priced, outdoor seating is now available and I highly recommend it. (Be sure to let your server know the degree of hotness you prefer) .

The good: Arrived late on a week night (to their credit, they are open until 10pm, 11pm Friday and Saturday), seated and ordered quickly. There's also a nice seating area outside. It was too chilly for me that evening, but I'm sure on a nice sunny day it'd be a nice place to hang out with a drink and some Thai noms. The meh: Started with an order of Siam Dumplings and fresh spring rolls. The dumplings were good, though a little bit salty. The soy sauce they came with though, tasted heavily of salt. It really bothered me and what would have been a really good appetizer became one that I let my dining partner finish. The fresh rolls were tiny shrimp with mostly bean sprouts and cabbage. I didn't like the sauce that came with it, either. It was slightly watery but extremely sweet. I'm not sure how that happened. But the rolls were bland and I wouldn't waste my time ordering them again. The entrees were pad thai and pad se ew. Noodles for the see ew were borderline overcooked and more greasy than I'd like (heating up the leftovers, the container we took them home had oil pooled at the bottom of it. So yeah, oily). But overall, the se ew's flavor was decent. The pad thai on the other hand was bland, even the chicken in it was bland, and probably not worth ordering again. I'd give this place another try and test out their curry or a chef's specialty, but from what I've had so far, you can do better, even within a few blocks.
(2)Frankie B.
Solid three stars. Drunken noodle - great! Tofu cashew - no way! Green Curry - ok, Elephant Thai is better. Wait staff - friendly and attentive.
(3)Rachel D.
I have been coming to Mom's Siam for more than 10 years. The family that runs the place is friendly and makes delicious Thai food. I've moved away from Richmond, and anytime I return I have to come here. Favorites include the Crispy Whole Fish, Softshell Crab Pad Thai, Namtuk, Massaman Curry, Green Curry, and Drunken Noodles.
(5)Sam F.
This used to be a great place to go for Thai food but it has slowly slipped into the "we don't really care" category - shows itself in both the service and the low quality of the dishes served. The last time I had the Pad Thai there was a huge clump of stuck together noodles showing poor, careless preparation. Whatever the case, it was not very good. Service has gone down as well. It's very sad but after three very disappointing experiences there in last 6 months, I felt I had to register on Yelp and post this. There are so many more Thai places in Richmond now, no one needs to suffer this.
