The most disappointing thing was the batter that covered my duck and the fried shrimp. This is not "light" batter. It made my entire duck red-curry dish taste like funnel cake. I like my duck crispy, not fried in batter. I'm no expert on traditional Thai food, but this made it feel very inauthentic to me. Very American. Pad See Ew was only passable. The noodles did not have the great chewy texture that I usually love. I will say that I really enjoyed the beef salad. This dish was also different than I have tasted before, but in a good way this time.

No. I need to stop giving this place second chances. It's bad. The food isn't good. You pay 14$ for five pieces of chicken and some bad service. Bad idea, don't go there.
(1)Mark M.
Overpriced and mediocre at best. The only good thing I can say is the serving size was good. So we didn't leave hungry. We really like Thai Diner 2, but their lunch portions are too small
(2)Paige A.
Wait staff was really sweet, good location, good drinks (had a Shirley temple & iced coffee--we're very sweet, so keep that in mind). I like that you could choose your level of spiciness for any dish. For Thai food, price was a bit high, but you did get good sized portions & it was yummy. I'd go back!

This is my 3rd or 4th time here, and I am never disappointed! The pineapple fried rice has a ridiculous amount of flavor, so lovers of bland food steer clear ;) Other yummies: Crab rangoon appetizer, yellow curry, pad prik king. Great service and great location (Carytown, right next to sweet frog!). If you come on a weekend evening your best bet for parking is the public deck on Crenshaw.

I need Yelp's help with Thai food - I've been trying it off and on for years but am not sure what to order to stay away from food with sugar (or sweetener) in it due to a low carb lifestyle. PLEASE send me your suggestions. :) I *love* curry and spicy food. Through the years Ginger has always been awesome and is my fav Thai spot for their food, location and outdoor seating. Consistently fresh ingredients, cute and clean space, great staff. The deck is wonderful for watching people try to parallel park, and for puppies and tattooed denizens on the street. They will make even the die-hard pepper lover cry (just ask my bf), but always with several checks from the owner/wait staff to be sure that's what you really want. The menu is great and the taste has always been pretty consistent. I usually get the Tom Yum soup and the Lemongrass; I've tried salads and other entree options but am not keen on entrees with a sweet taste (unless it's offset by savory), so I stick with what I know. The satay chicken app and fried/fresh spring rolls are also great. I doubt anything on their menu is not great. Good beer and wine options too.
(4)Marco S.
Pretty good food! Definitely loved the the thai spices- they warm you up, but don't burn your mouth. Good service too.
(5)Lauren G.
I'm a regular at Ginger Thai. Reasons: awesome outdoor patio, prompt service, great location, good food. It would get 5 stars, but I still consider myself a Thai food rookie so perhaps a better place does exist? Anyone attempting to find low-cal options, take my advice: stray from anything "Pad" (i.e. a week's worth of carbs via noodles, but delicious) and go for their Lemongrass or Ginger Perfect. They always give you a giant heap of white rice on the side, but I always use it to soak up some of the brown sauce from the vegetables. Things to consider: This isn't a fancy place. Their drink menu is super primitive - 4 beers, 4 whites, 4 reds I believe. The waiters won't/can't give you any in depth recommendations or even split checks sometimes, but they are prompt. I love spicy food but I still ask for medium here...they definitely tend to lay on the heat so beware!

When I first moved here, a lot of people told me that Carytown has a lot of good restaurants. Since I hadn't had Thai in a while, I asked a colleague to recommend a Thai place in Carytown for me to grace with my presence. The recommendation was Ginger Thai. It was a good recommendation. While the place is a little bit to crammed, I enjoyed the food. I had the drunken noodles with pork. I decided to get the hot insteasd of the thai hot or the out of my fucking mind hot. The person I went with ordered the Thai hot, and she certainly regretted it. Her eyes were watering, and her mouth was so hot that she needed water as much as someone stranded in the Saharah.
(3)Eileen K.
We were looking for a new Thai restaurant to try and Ginger Thai it was. There were 3 of us with 3 different degrees of hot. I ordered the tofu drunken noodles hot, and the waitress said, "Are you sure?" lol So, I changed my order to "I do not want my lips to burn." So, we had a special order of mild/hot...and it was perfect! The next plate we shared was a mild Pad Thai --medium---and again, perfect. And the last plate we shared was the incredible Pineapple rice-mild-. Now, I must state that I HATE CURRY--can't tolerate it. But, I must retract for this dish! Pineapple rice with nuts, raisins, pineapples and your choice of meat/tofu was incredible. Service was great and the place was clean. We'll be back!

There is one word that perfectly describes this restaurant: HORRIBLE. I am a huge fan of Thai food and this place ruins it. The service is beyond horrible. The sanitation of this place is frightening. There were so many flies all over the place. The food isn't reasonably priced either. I won't eat there again.
(1)D M.
Pretty small place inside, seats are on top of each other and not much to have privavcy. Hostess sat at back table to greet and seat us which was pretty rude. Guess it is better during the summer when the patio is available. Had a spicy shrimp dish that was overloaded with veggies i had to leave behind which looked like I never touched the plate. But the shrimp was jumbo and pretty good. Not sure if I would return, will try the place Thai too down the road at a later date and compare.

Portions are small and overpriced but the food is good. I ate all of my stir fried veggies and shrimp in lemongrass sauce, and I could've easily managed a few more bites. Overall, I enjoyed it. The sauce was too salty, but the food was cooked well--shrimp was firm, veggies were appropriately crunchy. Heat Index WARNING: These guys don't screw around. I ordered my entree 'hot' (#3 on a scale of 1-5) assuming it would be like all the other ethnic restaurants I've been to in the south--super dumbed down for weak tongued white people. That said, I am white, but I'm from the Southwest. I was weaned on NM green chiles--freakin' bring it. And they did. It was hot. Really, really hot. So I slowly tucked my tail between my legs, bowed my head, and gratefully wandered over to the two scopes of rice that came on the side. I was then able to power through. My husband, thinking the same thing, ordered 'Thai hot' (#5). At first he smiled and said it was awesome. Then his tongue went numb, he started sweating, and his eyes rolled back slowly into his head. He gave up pretty quickly and ordered a couple of spring rolls. The waitress said she assumed he'd been there before because he had placed his order so confidently. Afterwards we picked up a couple of frozen yogurts down the street to try and quell the volcano in his stomach. Give it a try but proceed with caution.

Ginger Thai is usually the Thai restaurant I go to the most in Carytown. Ginger Thai has a unique taste to their dishes in my opinion. I personally like the unique taste in the Ginger Thai food. I get the pad see ew, which is tasty. The drunken noodles has good flavor. The drunken noodle dish come with huge chucks of vegetables. I like vegetables but not so chunky. I cut them down if I get drunken noodles. The staff is good at customizing certain dishes to your taste. The Thai dishes at Ginger Thai come with a side of crushed peanuts and a lime. The Thai Iced Tea at Ginger Thai is delicious. Ginger Thai has one lady that usually services the entire restaurant. Ginger Thai has a nice social atmosphere. The service is usually good and fast. The lady that services the restaurant is friendly. Ginger Thai has a small seating area inside the restaurant and some patio. If prices were more reasonable,I would give Ginger Thai a 3.5 rating.
(3)Chad T.
This was the first time I tried Thai food and I was not disappointed. I ordered the Spicy Basil leaves and the dish was delicious. The portions were big as well. I actually had enough to take home with me for lunch the next day!

Dined here Sunday night 11-11-2012. Excellent restaurant with 5-star food (had the fried spring rolls & Thai cashew chicken). Very appetizing; sauce served with the spring rolls was fantastic. Quite crowded; lot of locals coming in for carry-out; sat in the patio area overlooking W. Cary Street; service was good; would definitely come back.
(5)Jess H.
The food here was okay. I've definitely had better Thai food, though, so I'm wavering between giving them 2 or 3 stars. Let's just say it was 2.5 and round up. The bad: 1) Tables are much too close together, making it difficult to navigate the already small restaurant, and also forcing you to listen to the conversations of the people around you. (In case you were wondering, the table to my left was having a thrilling discussion about the ingredients in sunscreen, and the table to my right featured a lady lasciviously telling her man-friend "try some of my juice on your nuts." I kid you not). 2) Fresh spring rolls were much too big, didn't have enough shredded carrot inside, and the dipping peanut sauce had too much vinegar. I like a more peanut buttery-like dipping sauce, but that's personal preference. 3) Flies. Not a ton of them, but enough to be annoying. Also, why are there flies in the first place? Things to consider. 4) My mussamun dish did not have enough substance to garner a $12.95 dinner price. Not. At. All. The good: 1) Service, despite being extremely busy, was pretty fast and they were really polite. 2) The thai tea is splendid. Well made! 3) They are pretty generous with the white rice that comes with your entree. 4) My tofu mussamun was cooked well and had great flavor.
(3)Shannon H.
Two words...Green Curry...the best in Richmond! I get it almost every time I eat here.
(5)Jalpa P.
4 stars for FOOD + PRICE Very tasty food. I've had their basil chicken, green curry, drunken noodles, and a few appetizers. AMAZING!!! They have spiceness levels and this is the only thai restaurant that I've had so far (and I've been to A LOT) that doesn't joke about the spice. I'm Indian and I took my mom here and she got the third level and actually said it was too spicy (when an Indian person says this...it's serious). The only thing that turns me away from the restaurant is that they don't give you a lot of food for the amount that you pay- personally, I think it's over priced. Elephant Thai gives you more for the price you pay. So much so that I don't really feel like going back even though the food is great. 4 stars for ATMOSPHERE Small restaurants with lots of places to sit. Outdoor seating available. Nothing amazing. They have the bar seating that faces the windows to the restaurant which is kind of cool. If you have a large party they'll have to put a few tables together which I feel like is half the restaurant since it's so small but they'll accommodate.
(4)BJ L.
I give this place 3 stars based almost completely on the location. Smack in the heart of Carytown, it doesn't get much better. As far as the food goes, they did a decent job, but it wasn't stand out. There are far better places to go in Richmond for more reasonable prices. The fact that they have a "Make me cry" option for spiciness is always helpful.
(3)G H.
Consistently our favorite Thai spot and one of our favorite Richmond restaurants. Everything is always good--especially the yellow curry.
(5)Rick L.
I'm stuck between giving this two or three stars. I'm landing on two, because there were actually three turn-offs during our dining experience. In the order in which they occurred: 1) As I was famished following a cross-country flight, I ordered some fresh spring rolls for us as soon as the waiter greeted us. For close to $7, I expected at least 4 spring rolls, but the waiter said that only two come in that order. So I doubled it. Then spring rolls arrived, I was embarrassed on behalf of the restaurant. Were their chefs from KFC or Wendy's? These spring rolls were as americanized as I could imagine. They simply had angel hair pasta (90%) plus a tiny bit of carrot (shredded). No mint, no basil, no flavor. It was honestly the worst effort at a spring roll I've ever tasted. Did the sauce at least make up for the blandness? Not a bit, sadly. 2) For the entree, I ordered the $15 vegetarian dish. It was delivered ten minutes after the dishes my dining companions ordered- clearly the kitchen had forgotten to make the dish, so they rushed it. And they rushed it to the point that it was all wrong. The eggplant was so undercooked and chewy that I had to send it back after two bites. I took the safe route and ordered the drunken noodles with tofu. Still overpriced, but at least delicious. These noodles were flavorful, but not exactly drunk. If there was supposed to be anything like sauce, it was not in evidence. 3) The waiter was apparently fresh off his job as a mortician. He had all the personality of an undertaker, without the smiles. There was exactly zero expression in his voice, and his service was indifferent at best. So, would I return? no, not even if you were paying for it. Date of dining experience: April 10, 2013

This is a great restaurant right in the midst of the action on Cary Street. It has a small patio for outdoor dining, and the food is very light and satisfying. You can tell they use fresh ingredients. I like the seafood salad, but I LOVE the garlic and black pepper with chicken. And their spring rolls are worth checking out as well. What I really appreciate about this restaurant is that you can choose the combination of meat and sauce/veggies that works for you. For example, I can get the garlic and black pepper with chicken, shrimp, beef, pork, even soft shell crab and duck. My husband also says they do a very nice beef curry. Word of warning- their website is not complete yet- but they do have their whole menu on there, so it's worth checking out.
(4)Wes F.
I enjoy eating at Ginger Thai when my usual favorite is closed or inaccessible for whatever reason. I usually sit in at the bar that faces out to the street so I can watch people walk by. They do a good job at all the standard dishes, and the presentation is above average. I don't ask for "extra broccoli" anymore because they charge me for it but I am never convinced it's there. And they serve the Pad See Ew with American broccoli instead of Chinese broccoli. Overall, though, it's excellent food. Bathrooms: One unisex single-user locking facility with a toilet, sink, and mirror.
(4)Eric R.
Truly the best restaurant in Carytown. Try the Tom Yum soup or the Grilled Beef Special Salad. They are my favorites. The only negative I have seen is the adult beverages are very lacking.

To be fair, I lived in Thailand when I was younger and have high expectations regarding Thai food. However, Ginger Thai is sub-par even by the most relaxed standards. Cha Yen (thai iced tea) was neither strong nor sweet enough for my tastes. Phat Grapow Gai (basil chicken stir fry) was far too salty and was filled with the unique choice of celery (which is the first time I've seen of the 250+ times I've had this dish throughout the USA and Thailand). The sauce was well flavored with the right amount of basil, but when I asked for Naam Plaa Prik (Thai condiment staple -- fish sauce with floating chillis) I was brought an astonishingly sweet sauce that was not spicy in the least. Our party also ordered Lemongrass stiry fry which tasted nearly identical to my dish, with the fortunate exception of not being subjected to celery overload. Not even 3 bites into the meal, one of our party spilled their drink into their plate. The wait staff feigned sympathy, gave us a few extra paper napkins, and then did none of the following: cleaned the spill, cleared the plate swimming with chicken and cola, offered to make a new dish, nor put their meal on the house. It's clear that the $11.50 was far more important than creating a repeat customer. In summary: food was only vaguely Thai, mildly enjoyable, and over-priced. Service was halfhearted and incompetent, and there are several other choices for Thai food in the area -- all of which are far superior. 2 stars is being generous.

Ginger Thai Taste is by far my favorite restaurant in Richmond. The Thai Cashew Chicken is a vision of perfection and the lunch portion is just the right size (dinner portion has more meat and rice, but the same amount of vegetables, which is a shame because the tender vegetables are the best part). I have dreams of eating this dish. The Pad Thai and Curry dishes are also very good and with a variety of spicy-ness options available, there's something suitable for ever palette. The atmosphere is nice--padded cushions to sit on and tasteful Asian inspired decor without seeming too gimmicky. On warmer days, the patio offers a cool alternative. The service has always been exceptional. My only complaint about Ginger Thai Taste is the absence of a full bar, although they do have a small selection of Asian beers and sake. It's unfortunate that the other Thai restaurants on Cary St. seem to draw bigger crowds than Ginger. I'll certainly be returning again soon!
(5)Natalie M.
Ginger Thai is one of my all-time favorite restaurants. I absolutely LOVE the Ginger Perfect dish and the staff is really friendly. I think it's a cute place for a date night or just a fun night out with friends. Definitely recommend!
(5)Daniel T.
I took my wife there a last month. I had cashew chicken. It was great!!! The service was good and the atmosphere was nice. The place is clean and nice tables. I think it's the best Thai restaurant I ate at in Richmond,VA.
(5)Gina G.
Decided to go here for dinner last night. This was my second time here had the red curry with jumbo shrimp and it was excellent. The curry sauce was very flavorful and they did not skimp on the veggies or the shrimp. It is tiny so you would have to reserve or get there at the right time for them to accommodate a large group. The staff there are great too!
(4)Ray S.
They did a good job. We have had better here in richmond but this is in a good location and the outdoor seating is fun.
(3)Amy S.
It was all good until the cockroach crawled onto my plate. I wish I was joking.... The hostess, when alerted to the problem, simply came over with a napkin and squished the bug, then whisked it away. No offer of comps, no apology, nothing... The food was just okay.
(1)MissGinni H.
Last week, my lunch at Ginger Thai with my constant companion was not a disappointment, but there were some things that made me wince...namely the check. There was no lunch menu per se, or lunch specials. There was no entree really under ten dollars. with 2 entrees, one order of fresh spring rolls, one small soup, and two drinks..we're talking almost 50 bucks. i don't want to ever pay that much for lunch, ever. That being said, what drew me to Ginger Thai was the Tom Yum soup, and it is delicious. I got the chicken as my meat choice, but the star is that spicy broth and the wonderful hot sauces served on the side. There was plenty of fresh cilantro too. The fresh spring rolls were good, not remarkable. the peanut sauce was not a familiar creamy peanut sauce, but rather thin, and not very spicy. My companion had a curry dish, and requested it "medium", and it set his mouth on fire. He can't really handle the spice like me. I ordered shrimp pad thai, which I love, and have had at so many different places. Some have been wonderful, and some not so wonderful. This was about right in the middle. The shrimp were few, the sauce was tasty but sparse, as was the egg and tofu, but plenty of crushed peanuts and bean sprouts. I ordered medium, and found it mild...but that's me. extra limes were brought on request. it was good, but could have been better, especially for 12 bucks or whatever it was. The server, I hate to say this, was extremely hard to comprehend. she was nice, and brought Mr. Mouth-on-fire about 20 coke refills, but it took us several "excuse me's" to understand that the kitchen was closing in ten minutes and we needed to get our order in. It is a nice-looking restaurant. Will I return? yes, but maybe just for the Tom Yum soup.
(3)Jessica L.
I've only ever had carry-out here, so my review doesn't fully encompass the restaurant itself! My roommate was craving Thai and told me she usually goes here when she's not willing to drive all the way to Pad Thai in Mechanicsville. We decided to order dishes to-go, and I went with the Tofu Pad Thai while she went with the Beef Drunken Noodles. The food was ready to pick up in about 15 minutes, and they were both pretty good. Not amazing, but decent when you're looking for a Thai fix!
(3)Kristin B.
Amazing tofu! Very good tea & I loved the after dinner cappucino candy. The service is excellent!! Even though the seating is cozy and there isn't much room between tables, my drinks were refilled constantly without the meal or conversation feeling interrupted.
(4)Fern H.
Came here a month ago for a birthday dinner. Service was great. They didn't know what sake bombs were, but gave my friends the necessary ingredients/cups/shot glasses for one. Food: Had pad see ew. One thing I will say is that you do NOT use regular broccoli in this dish. Its chinese broccoli!! I automatically gave it a 1. The flavoring was extremely salty and there was too much garlic. I gave it an extra star bc of the service
(2)Julia G.
First place, ever, to take me seriously about getting it "Thai Hot" or as they call it "Make Me Cry." It almost did. If you like spicy, go! But, make sure to stare at the waitress intently, almost with an offended expression, when she is sweetly trying to convince out of, basically, suicide. I double-dare you!
(4)Kim J.
Yummy chicken pad thai and Thai iced tea. The only weird thing is our vegetarian spring rolls (which were also tasty) were served at the same time as our lunch. That wasn't too much of a big deal. Service and atmosphere were great too. I'd go there again.
(4)Alana G.
This is probably my favorite Thai place in Richmond if I'm judging solely by the flavor of the food. I usually get the curries (red, green, or yellow -- I liked them all), though the past couple of times I've had the drunken noodles with tofu which are surprisingly filling. Their Thai iced tea is uber sweet and marvelous! Both the lunch and the dinner staff are consistently friendly and very helpful for those of us with nut allergies. Not cheap by any means, but filling and tasty so I'm willing to pay for it on occasion. Also, when it's warm and sunny, their little terrace is pleasant.
(4)Khalilah L.
Food is tasty altho portions can be better I paid $15 for drunken noodles w/ shrimp and only got like 4 shrimps ...like damn O_O Im gonna try out another thai spot next time
(3)Mary R.
I really did not enjoy the food here. My pad see ew had so much black pepper it was hard to eat and the tofu was so tough I could barely chew it. The only reason I give it a 2 as apposed to a 1 is the atmosphere is nice on a Sunday afternoon and the staff was friendly. However, unless the food changes I would not eat here again.
(2)Judith L.
3.5 stars Not super experienced with the Thai scene in Richmond, but this place is pretty good. Small- shall we call it cozy?- but the make good use of the space that they have to work with. The staff is friendly and attentive- I never had to ask for a refill and they kept an eye on the customers as well as checked in throughout the meal to see if anyone needed anything or if everything was satisfactory. I had the pad se ew with beef here. The beef was tender and the dish was flavored well. They have a style of cooking Thai food that was slightly different than the other places that I've tried- but that's not a ad thing. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Carytown and in the mood for some Thai.
(3)Kelly H.
While not the best Thai I have ever eaten it's certainly very good! The best in Richmond. Excellent curries! As spicey as you like...just remeber if you ask for VERY SPICEY you do indeed get VERY SPICEY. The location is nice but rather small space in Carytown. It can be rather crowded at times and you may be standing outside to wait on a table. But if you like good Thai it's worth it!
(4)Emily C.
So I've recently been traveling to Richmond quite often. I had heard about CaryTown and decided to check it out. My honey and I did after I had convinced him it was really fun. Coming from Austin TX... Richmond was a tad bleak to say the least, but I'm a firm believer in exploring and forming my own opinion about cities. Make the experience my own shall I say... So we LOVE Thai food. Used to have a neighborhood spot in Austin where we frequented (as I hang my head in shame) 2-4x weekly. Thus... We were looking for the same here in Richmond. And we found it! I consider myself a Tom Kha expert and Ginger's didn't disappoint. Made fresh to order and full of flavor. Our second fav is the Thai Cashew Chicken, we usually get with extra veggies hold the rice. Medium hot is SOOO GOOD. My boyfriend keeps trying to convince me we need to take this sauce to a lab to see exactly what is in it being we've tried to recreate at home and have failed miserably numerous times LOL All in all I really love the lil charm Ginger offers, looking at all walking by while you sip on soup and chow on chicken always is fun on a weekend afternoon.
(5)Brian C.
Their food is outstanding, always cooked perfectly, super spicy and the service is excellent. The brown sauces are very delicate and have loads of defined flavors. Any seafood or tofu dish is out of this world good. Watch the heat level though. They are not kidding when they use the "make me cry" heat level. How can you go wrong?
(5)Stephanie S.
The service was awesome, the location was great, the atmosphere was exactly like my favorite Thai place in San Francisco, Chili Cha Cha. But the Tom Kah soup was so-so at best. It had green beans.. green beans!! I love my veggies.. but Tom Kah Kai should NOT have green beans. And the broth was completely flavorless, what it was lacking in flavor it made up with in spiciness. Where's Chili Cha Cha when I need it? The bottle of wine I picked up beforehand made everything better though. Come to think of it, I don't know what a bottle of wine won't make better.
(2)Jason B.
The food was awesome, the service was as good as it could be will two people managing the dining room, patio area, as well as take out. Despite the wait for service and food, all meals came out together and were hot and flavorful. I believe they were surprised by the dinner rush because they weren't as busy when our party walked in. I would return to this place as long as we are not in a rush to get through the meal.
(4)Barbara P.
They have Massaman curry! that's a winner for me and it was pretty yummy. Its a pretty small and somehow even though its in the middle of Carytown its intimate. This would be a good spot for a casual date night boys!!!! This is not my personal fav Thai place in RVA but its close at 2nd.
(4)Dev W.
Visit frequently and always happy. My friends like spicy and I don't so the staff modifies the heat level in each dish. My vegan friend like it since it's one of the few places in Richmond with tasty food for vegans, vegetarians, and meat lovers- all at the same table. Service is great and the outdoor patio is a ideal on nice spring and fall days....but nearly unbearable in summer. The coconut water is really refreshing without being too sweet. Nice option for something sweet other than tea or softdrinks. The place is very small so either get there early or late or during the week. Can be crowded but wort the wait. I wish they would make the decor a bit more urbane and contemporary but I go there for the food- not interior design tips.
(4)Will E.
Although the decor isn't much it isn't in poor taste either. Food comes quickly and the servers appear to be gracious. The chicken dumplings probably need a redo. They use dark meat chicken if not minced and it takes on a very different taste. However! The Blue Crab & Shrimp Rice dish was delectable. My companion ordered the salmon & apple dish with peanuts. It was pretty tasty and a very interesting meld of flavors but it did not compare with my Blue Crab & Shrimp Fried Rice. It isn't often that I get to dine with the restaurant staff catering to me and my guest with no other patrons to cater to but when you given the chance the special attention is more than welcomed. Typically an empty restaurant is a sure fire sign of a need to continue my search but my companion was pretty convincing in playing Ginger Thai up weeks before my arrival. An overall pleasant experience and I would absolutely revisit if and when in the area.
(3)Lisa N.
Situated in the middle of busy Carytown, Ginger Thai is expensive ($18 for a beef drunken noodles, WHAT?!), over-crowded due to its small size, and has so-so service (probably because it was busy). The portion sizes are large, however, so sharing is not a bad idea. The food is just average and my friend, who ordered the spiciest level was not impressed and had to ask for the spice rack to add even more. Overall, I will not be coming back.
(2)Caitlyn D.
I have come to the conclusion that, although I adore Ginger... it's actually not that good. I like it because I started going here my first year of college, when I barely knew a thing about Thai food, and kept coming here with my friends, my parents, and my dates. So yeah, the food is overly salty and the place is cramped, and the best waiter in the world stopped working there about a year ago, but. The staff are nice, the barstools by the window are the best seat in the house (sit there and peoplewatch while everyone else behind you in the restaurant fades away..I told you I went here on dates), the iced coffee is nommy if a little over-sugared, and the food is flavorful and filling. They don't skimp on spice if you want it. A solid and nostalgic spot.
(3)Derick K.
These people know how to serve up some Thai. I'm a huge fan of the Red Curry and the Yellow Curry, extra spicy, with a Thai Iced Tea and copious amounts of water. Start off with the Fried Spring Rolls and you'll agree that the preparation was remarkably executed. You should, of course, vary the level of spice to your tastes, some of us prefer feeling sorry the next day. HOWEVER, use caution; I ate here and followed it up with an early morning trip up I-95 through holiday traffic. Bold or stupid move, we'll let you decide. Also, being located on Cary Street, there are various flavors for foodies to enjoy, but a good job has been done to not overwhelm the traffic with too much of any one style of cuisine. This is probably one of the greatest strips for food that I have ever been to, but Ginger Thai is hands down the best Thai food in Richmond, regardless of which side of town you're on.

AWESOME food. We visited RVA from San Jose California to meet our best friends. They were showing us around the downtown area. We went to maymont and on our way back we felt like eating some really Hot tasting food. Although we were Indians and there were pelnty of Indian restaurants around, we opted for a Thai place because we knew we can some nice Hot food at a Thai restaurant and we were bored of eating Indian food. So we went into this little restaurant. This is a very small restaurant. It was packed on a winter Saturday for lunch. The lady offered us seating near the bar and we took it. We were a party of 4 and all vegetarians. We ordered Fried Spring Rolls, Tom Yum Soup, SF-8 from the menu, Pad Thai, Basil Fried Rice. We ordered everything "Thai Hot". There was a "Make me cry" level too but we felt it is too much. The Thai Hot was too hot mind you. I would rate it at about 8.5/10 scale where 10 means you will cry for sure and I am South Indian where we eat Jolokia peppers for lunch :) Anyways, the food was YUMMY. The hotness was just like how we expected. After that we washed it down with Coconut Water. The coconut water was a let down. It is sugar water with a little bit of coconut. Bottom line. AMAZING FOOD. Try it. You won't be disappointed.

I fell in love with this place the first time I visited. Best lad nah I've had and they are VERY generous with their portion size. The restaurant has a cozy, "cute" atmosphere to it as well which usually sets a very good mood on a busy weekend night. I give it 4 stars because although the food is amazing, the service is slow. There have been a number of times where I'd order a side dish or another water and I'd never see my waiter again. Still, a must-have if you're a Thai fan.
(4)Leslie A.
While I now consider Ginger Thai to be the best Thai food I've had yet in Richmond, the high price of their meals knocks this down to 4 stars. As is mentioned before, their spiciness table is no joke! "Make me cry" hot is something I'm not sure I want to bring upon myself, as "Thai hot" actually does make me shed tears. Food here is delicious. I'm not sure what other peoples' standards are for Thai fare, but here in Richmond, I can't really complain too much with this place. :)

We went for lunch today. I counted 7 flies hanging out within a few feet of our table inside. The food was OK. Way overpriced. The red curry was too salty The drunken noodles with shrimp came with 5 shrimp. 2 appetizers and 2 entrees brought the lunch bill to $50. That's without drinks. I've lived in Philly and worked in NYC. That's an ambitious price to charge for what we got. I'm giving it 3 years.

My favorite Thai in Richmond is Thai Diner off of W. Broad St. I wanted to try something new downtown, so my boyfriend and I ventured to Ginger Thai. We ordered the fried Spring Roll which comes with two in an order. They were tasty. I ordered the Pad Thai - American Hot and he had some sort of Pineapple Combo with Rice. I tasted both and thought they were good, but I would have preferred my Spicey Noodle from Thai Diner. I thought the spice was just right, but I think may have been a little more spicier than I was used to. It was definitely way more pricey than what I was used to. The service was very attentive and friendly.
(3)Lia S.
Not the greatest Thai food I've ever eaten, but I'd venture to say it's probably the best in Richmond. The restaurant is not particularly pleasant or charming, but it's also not expensive and perfect for a casual bite. I highly recommend the fried rices, particularly the pineapple fried rice. Careful what you ask for in terms of spice - unlike most restaurants, they don't tone down the spice for Americans. FYI... I wrote this review BEFORE reading Kelly H.'s review below. Apparently we had the exact same experience with Ginger Thai.
(3)Kate W.
I love the service here and the food is excellent. They are not afraid of the heat at all. I feel like most places assume that people can't handle spice, but this place gives you a choice of how spicy you want your food instead of assuming that you need mild. I like mine very spicy, so this is a great place for me! Also, many other restaurants in town have very greasy thai food. This place was not greasy at all. Loved it. Highly suggest it.
(5)Toni T.
This visit was my first experience with Thai food and I was excited to try a new cuisine, as a friend had been raving about it! I had the Pad Thai with scallops; my bf had the same, but with the meat combo. We both had mild spices in our dishes, as some of the previous Yelp reviews indicated that the food could get pretty spicy. We both enjoyed our dishes and the mild taste of the noodles combined with the meat. I thought the prices of the entrees were a bit pricey, but given the portions sizes, I'd say they are worthwhile. I would love to try the Pad Thai with soft shell crab (they didn't have any that day); I also saw a fried rice dish with blue crab and shrimp that I've love to try. The staff was friendly and I appreciated the covered patio that offers a place for people watching in the Carytown district. I am a new fan of Thai food and wouldn't mind visiting this restaurant again.

Tom kha soup not tom kha onion. Came here on an early Saturday evening and the place had a lively crowd going which is a good sign. After I made my way like a mouse through a maze to my table (seriously the tables here are uber close to one another, like reach out and poke your neighbors nose close) I was promptly attended to by our waiter. Despite the busy restaurant he had a good grip of his section and was very courteous and attentive. If only the food had been as good as the service. I had a tom kha soup that was spiced just the way I like it, to the point of making most people cry, but it had more onion in it that anything else. It had 3 shrimp. That's it. 3. Not 3 and a little piece. Only 3. There was, however, enough onion to reconstruct an entire blooming onion and an onion coliseum. Suffice to say I was not happy with my dish. The GF ordered a curry dish and it was good but it definitely seemed to lack enough bang for the buck at $13. The only bright spot was a kick ass Thai tea but that was too small an item to rescue this train wreck. There are quite a few better Thai options in the Carytown area, I think I will stick to them for my next fix.
(2)Rebar M.
Walk further into Carytown for better Thai. The atmosphere is nice, especially the patio. The menu touts itself as being veg friendly, but fish sauce is the norm in the majority of sauces - beware veg friends - The prices are a little steep for Richmond, the service could be better and the food quality is good, but there is better in the immediate area. Pros: Spring/Summer Rolls are by far the largest and best in the area. They spice things up to tear jerking levels if you let them. The atmosphere is cute and the patio give you great views of Carytown. Cons: Fish Sauce every where, which is OK if you are not a veggie like me. Waiting for your own reservation, which has happened to me several times. The dishes are your standard Thai fare and above standard prices.

A friend and I went to Carytown (Richmond's traffic nightmare) for an errand and decided to have lunch at Ginger Thai. It turned out to be a good choice. GT is a small restaurant, so don't expect spacious surroundings. And, at $10 minimum for a lunch entree, don't expect to walk out for under $35 for two people including beverage and tip. However, for an occasional spree, GT is a good choice. We both decided to have the yellow chicken curry, medium spice, and we were both very pleased. The heat from this full bodied curry gradually sneaks up on you,and by the end of lunch we could tell we had been eating spicy food. The curry had chicken, chunks of carrot and roasted potatoes swimming in the delicious sauce, which had a great coconut undertone. Two scoops of white rice were on the side for mixing. Next time I have to go to Carytown, I'll make a point of coming back to GT.
(4)Heather S.
Great small place with good food and fast, friendly service. Went on a Saturday night when the place was about half full. The mixed grill panang curry and tofu pad thai were both very good. The heat rating scale was a bit higher than expected, so I'll likely go for a notch lower next time. For such a small place it seems odd to have a TV on, but it's not loud or distracting.
(4)David H.
decent thai, nothing spectacular. thai tea was underwhelming, a little on the sweet side and lacking in flavor
(3)Meredith W.
Ginger Thai is in a great location right in the heart of Carytown. I called in for pick up, and the ordering process was quick and easy. When I came in to pick up the interior was cute, small area but nicely maintained. The man that had taken my order was very nice and my food was ready really quickly, but another girl that was working there was slouched down on one of the booth benches and saying she was going to take a nap, kind of bad business to be playing on your phone and practically laying down in the dining area. The food: I had the thai iced tea, which was a little too sweet for me but it was made on the spot so the guy making it may have just used a little too much condensed milk on mine. For an appetizer I had the crab rangoons which were completely different then others I have had. These were almost completely crab meat on the inside, I'm used to mostly cheesy with some small bits of meat. They are also half moon shaped and flat not little pockets like in most places, bottom line- I didn't like them and actually tossed half the appetizer. For the entree I had Chicken Pad See Ew and it was pretty good and a huge portion size. The broccoli tasted really fresh too. Overall, I would def return, but I would try a different appetizer
(3)Brittney G.
I have tried a few Thai places in Richmond and this one is by far the best. The food is a little over priced.
(4)Ronello X.
When you walk in, you quickly realize that it is much smaller inside than it appears from outside. The food is on point! Go for the Bangkok Chicken, it is super good. The Drunken Noodle is ok. The service is ok, but could be stepped up a bit. However, the wait for the food was short. Overall, I would recommend and will eat there again myself.
(3)Trey B.
Another home-run here when it comes to Thai. I personally don't care for it as much as some, but I wanted to check it out because it is in a great location right in Carytown. The black pepper and garlic steak was perfect, exactly what I was expecting. Lots of nicely cooked veggies, the steak was juicy and flavorful. Just about everything that was dining was stuffed and requested boxes because the portions are very generous. Very good choice, the prices are average. Seating is kind of close, but I foresee that only being an issue if they become packed, which they weren't at the time. Five stars in my book :D
(5)Colleen D.
I think they're trying to be Pan-Asian, rather than just focusing on one cuisine. That's what the curry entree I ordered tasted like - Thai plus Chinese. Also, huge chunks of vegetables in the soup and entree do NOT make your restaurant fancy - it just makes it look like there's more on the plate. I did not see any lunch specials, either, so that should have been a clue that this place is WAY overpriced, perhaps to pay for the obvious renovations to the front of the building. 23.00 for a simple soup and entree for one; and no brown rice, either. I don't think I'll be back.
(2)Vasu S.
Be prepared with your wallet full as the food is on the pricier end compared to the neighboring Thai options. Another point to be noted is they are not kidding when their spice level says "makes you cry"!!
(2)Susan F.
Not too impressed. I had been wanting to go here for a while. I stopped here for lunch on a recent trip to Carytown. It was okay...I have had much better Thai. I had the Ginger Beef. When I visit Richmond again...I probably would choose some other place.
(3)Rachel P.
Definitely better than the rest. I always have excellent service here. It's really the only Thai food I like around the bouts. Which is a damn shame...b/c thai food is something I llllove. P.S. certificate on wall states that the chef was trained in Bangkok @ the Blue Elephant cooking school. Which is better than nothing right?
(4)Logan M.
Absolutely the best Thai food in Richmond. Tons of choices, friendly staff, and very clean. I almost always get the Thai cashew with chicken but I've tried a bunch of other things and everything was fabulous. They also have the best fried tofu I've ever had, perfect every time.
(5)Tim M.
I've come her a few times while hanging out in Carytown and I've never had any complaints until now. The noodles in my Pad See Ew were either undercooked and soggy or overcooked and impossible to chew. My date's Pad Thai was apparently fine though so maybe the cook just messed up one dish. I guess that's my only complaint; the service was pretty quick and sitting on the patio gave us a nice view of the neighborhood.
(3)Micah P.
Ginger Thai had good food, but I'm not really a fan of the atmosphere. The restaurant is really small and a table for two usually means you're in a very small corner of the restaurant feeling squished.
(3)Lilly N.
Although this is a cute space in Carytown, the food leaves more to be desired. I've tried the green curry here, and it was mediocre -- flavors were more on the spicy side with not much complexity. The spicy drunken noodles that I've had once (and never again) was mushy, not spicy at all, and by the time I was finished with it, half of it was still left. Hint: I'm usually a clean-plater. The Ginger perfect was more like ginger-imperfect -- was there even ginger in the dish? The only thing that I enjoyed at this restaurant was their tom yum and tom kha soup, but even then the veggies were sized more appropriately for Andre the giant. Really?
(2)Antony S.
The atmosphere has a quaint homely feel with gracious service. The food is moderately priced and the menu has the essential list of Thai dishes. The food itself is..... good to ok. It's worth checking out if you haven't yet been.
(3)Anonymous P.
Ginger Thai has a cute, cozy interior that makes for a nice dining experience. In terms of the food, I found it to be an average American Thai restaurant. Everything was enjoyable, but nothing remarkably so.
(3)Krystle W.
The food here is divine, consistently. I've tried the Pad Thai and the chicken w/cashews. I ordered my chicken cashew dish with mild spice and my poor mouth could not hang...to my spicy weaklings, this is your FYI/APB. My friend ordered the curry which I tasted - FAB! She made a good point in saying "this is the only place I've been that gave me enough rice for the curry. Awesome. Wait service is friendly and responsive. I've been to Mama Siam and there is no comparison. You need Ginger Thai in your life.
(5)Jeff E.
I had dinner here last Saturday night with two friends from out of town. Our hostess/waitress couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating although she is sometimes hard to understand due to her strong accent. I had a Singha which is a Thai lager and it worked well to quench my thirst and the heat of the food for at least a few moments. I had the green curry bowl with chicken at "medium" spiciness. While delicious it was almost too hot for me. Don't order your dishes "hot" or "thai hot" unless you know you have a high tolerance for pain :) Prices are reasonable. The space is small but comfortable. I imagine it may get crowded at peak hours but at 9:30 PM it was probably a little over half full.
(4)Ron D.
Awesome food, great service and located in a very convenient, hip place of Carytown, with friendly, fast staff! There is a very neat patio in the front which is where I sit and watch people while eating great food!
(5)Christopher H.
Food: High-quality ingredients and lots of variety. The portions are good (not so much that you'll be taking some home, but enough to satisfy). I highly recommend the calamari appetizer. The only drawback is that the spiciness is all over the place, it depends on who's cooking. I used to always order "medium"--sometimes it was perfect, and sometimes it was so much I couldn't eat the food. (I'd recommend ordering the chili sauce on the side and adding it to taste). Atmosphere: Very cosy and clean. Service: Always great! The woman who owns the place is very charming. Overall, I think it's the best Thai place I've been to in Richmond (including Mam's Siam) on all of the above. Check it out!
(4)Brian F.
No joke, I found a dead caterpillar in my entree. Thought the place was cool until that. Wouldn't go back.
(2)Quang N.
Really an average Thai restaurant. While the location is great, the actual restaurant is crowded and the staff a bit slow. Still, given the quality of the food and the prices required to keep such a great location, there are other places I would rather go to for a better quality Thai meal.
(3)Lee B.
I can't speak for many items on the menu, since I invariably get pineapple fried rice and ginger beef, but I can say that those two are some of the best Thai dishes I've had. The waitstaff is very friendly and your food will arrive promptly. Ginger Thai is my favorite restaurant in Carytown.
(4)Morgan S.
One of the best Thai places in the city! The dining area small yet cozy. And the food is phenomenal, I have eaten there about 3 or 4 times and it is great the pad see ew has a very nice spice to it and the drunken noodles are delectable and of course the standard pad Thai is good safe bet. My only complaint is the drink selection was a little lacking for my taste but they do all the standard beers.
(5)DJ L.
My first choice around for Thai food (not that I know ALL of the places). Usually get it to go, but I always enjoy going in and eating. The people there are really nice and it always seems that the customers are always really happy...Its kind of weird actually...
(4)Claiborne I.
A few years ago when this place first opened, it was my favorite Thai in Richmond. Now, after a recent visit, I will prefer other places. The food is good but not for the prices. Especially, when you can eat as well for less just a few blocks down Cary. Ginger Thai features all the staples in a comfortable and clean atmosphere. Plus, it has nice outdoor seating which could be worth the premium on a nice day or night. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with the food. It is good, but it doesn't represent the value I expect from a non-upscale ethnic eatery. I won't avoid the place, but I won't try to make it back either.
(2)N n.
This is my favorite place to go to for Thai food in Richmond. I am a huge fan of Thai food. It's one of my go to comfort foods. I like how Ginger Thai gives you the flexibility to choose the type of dish/curry/sauce, the meat, and the level of spicyness. The decor is nicely detailed with Thai silk pillows and cushions. The service is always great.
(4)Ryan P.
This is the best Thai place in Richmond (coming from a vegetarian mind you)!
(5)Sarah B.
holy tofu pad thai! sooooooo good. this is my favorite of the 3 or 4 thai places on cary street for sure!
(5)Jeff S.
i love this spot. i've slowly stopped going to the other thai restaurants in richmond because they have let me down in one way or another. ginger never does. the service is friendly, the food is uniquely their own and exceptional. the best tom kha soup i've ever had anywhere. my only gripe is that it's more expensive than the others but at the same time it's a better value. i could eat the spring rolls and tom kha forever. i use this place to reward myself when i've earned it and i have some extra money for a nice meal.
(4)Nic S.
I love the food here--except the Pad Thai!
(4)Elijah C.
I did not want to say it at first -- one of my very good friends owns a competing Thai restaurant. I've been a frequent and fiercely loyal customer to that restaurant for years. But this restaurant has won me over. It's consistently better. The flavor is always spot on. My roommate usually orders the Garlic Chicken when I come here as well. It's a bit on the expensive side, but please do not let that deter you from trying this place at least once. For me to suggest I like it more than the four restaurants my friend and his family own... that says a lot. This is my #1 Thai restaurant in Richmond, Virginia. As much as I love taking photographs, I rarely do it in Thai and Vietnamese restaurants because I always order it without vegetables ... I would prefer if photos are on Yelp, they represent what you actually get vs. what I order as a picky eater. The supplemental questions are a bit tricky on Asian restaurants. Is it good for kids? It depends on your child. Most children prefer a burger or hot dog. This restaurant does not cater to them. Is it good for a group? Keep in mind most places in Carytown and Richmond have limited seating. It's good for a group if you make prior arrangements or don't arrive at a peak time and expect seating for ten. But I take most of my food to go since I live a block away.
(5)Matthew V.
Came here on a whim because my fellow guest and I were visiting from out of town to see family. We enjoyed sitting by the sidewalk on the patio on a cool spring evening. I'm not a snob when it comes to Asian cuisine, but the food from Ginger Thai Taste seemed to be one of the most authentic an experiences that I've had anywhere. For one thing, there are five choices for how "hot" you want your meal to be, with number five being the hottest. I have a preference for things to be pretty hot. However, my awesome waitress followed up with my request for the number three by saying, "Are you sure about that, sir? The number three is hot enough to make your nose run and eyes water." Everyone within earshot let out a bellow of laughter, including yours truly. I changed my taste selection to number two, which was still hot, but not that unbearable. Overall, our service was friendly. Cool atmosphere. Good food. All of you lovers of Thai food, definitely come here!
(4)Alixandra G.
Note to people with legitimate gluten allergies - this is a no go. I'm sure they mean well but they do not have a clear enough understanding of what gluten is to make this a safe bet if you are celiac. They said they can fully accommodate allergies yet ordering a stir fry raised the question of gluten free sauces which caused a lot of confusion because they didn't understand that oyster sauce and many others often contain gluten. A lot of general red flags that one gets accustomed to when they have serious allergies and dine out. We ordered fresh rolls despite this and they were, as other customers noted, bland and unremarkable.

Came here Saturday night. Sat outside (good for people watching) after 8pm. We had a very lovely and kind waitress. We ordered the friend calamari appetizer which was very tasty (good quality chunks of squid, not just the round parts). We always order a papaya salad at every Thai place we try, this one did not disappoint one bit! Very fresh and crisp papaya with bursting flavor. The pad Thai was awesome! I got it with chicken and shrimp and "medium" spicy. My boyfriend got the drunken beef noodles and it was so fresh and flavorful. I appreciate that they ask "are you sure?" If you ask for it "Thai Hot" because it is supposedly HOT. the medium was perfect. Overall, the service was prompt, friendly and the food was great. Will stop by again if we are in town!
(5)Kristy L.
I love all types of food and I'm not picky. However, this time I was traveling with three other people, one who was my dad, who is one of the most pickiest eaters ever. He can find any flaw in the most perfect thing. We traveled from jersey for around six hours due to traffic and we were hangry. Ginger, for its small size(which is common in carytown), is amazing and even impressed my dad. The food was prepared beautifully. My dad loved the spices and flavor of everything, as did I. I'm not the best with spicy food, but all their food is prepared with other great flavors, the spiciness complements it well. My recommendations is their curry and drunken noodles. Delicious!
(4)Kasha W.
Huge portions and delicious vegan entree options. The drunken noodles were amazing. All of the standard are well made here in the cute little restaurant. Outdoor seating option in Cary as well. GREAT service staff. Will make this one of my standard Thai places.
(5)Harshad M.
The location is great and nice ambiance . The food was really good. My wife had Drunken noodles which she said was very good. I had Cashew Chicken and the sauce was very tasty. I thought it was a little pricey but they compensate it with the portion. What they can do is get a wider variety of beers.
(3)Allison I.
Great service, great food and wonderful atmosphere. I love the location of this Thai place in Carytown along with them being Pet Friendly. They accommodated my puppy and even gave him a bowl with water & ice. The pad Thai was very "saucy" and the meat was tender and moist compared to other Thai places around RVA / VCU. We also got the steamed dumplings- must try!
(5)Brandon W.
Terrible service, completely overpriced dishes, fake thai restaurant serving general tso's chicken. My girlfriend is Thai and she hated this restaurant.
(1)Thuy V.
My second favorite Thai place in Carytown. It is a bit cleaner and smaller than Thai Diner Too. The food is less greasy. Flavors are good but the massaman curry I had could have had a little deeper flavor. I would say the non-special entrees are an OK size. Friends had the soft shell crab and another fish special and they were very happy with their choices. They also don't skimp on the rice. A solid place.
(3)Colin B.
The green curry bowl is off the cha-zain!
(5)Jaimi G.
This place is soooo good! My siblings and I took my mom here for a unique bite for mothers days treat. We loved it and the service is amazing! Nice outdoor view and seating with fans! Right near sweet frog
(5)Lizzie L.
I love Thai food and am always in the market to check out a new spot. I went to Ginger Thai on a Sunday afternoon. The resturant was busy but not too crowded so we got a table right away. For a starter I chose the Satay chicken, it was cooked nicely, seasoned well and the peanut sauce was delicious. My favorite dish is Panang Curry so that's what I ordered with chicken. The dish was spicy and the sauce was semi-flavorful but not the best I have had, I would say 6 on a scale of 1 - 10. The menu was on the expensive side in my opinion. Overall, the food was good but I will continue my search for Thai in Richmond!
(2)BB Q.
Always delicious. I've been enjoying Ginger for over a decade, and it remains one of my favorite places in town. I always find my dish with fresh, crisp vegetables and plenty of flavor. My favorites have been the green curry, pad Thai, spicy basil leaves, and of course the drunken noodles. The deck is a nice place to enjoy a meal, as is the "bar" seating along the window (also nice if you ever are, or want to dine alone). If you can't enjoy dinner at the restaurant, carry-out is a great option, and extremely fast!
(5)Megan B.
After going to fan noodle bar and moms Siam, I can tell you that this place blows them both out of the water. Best Thai food I've ever had. We ordered the spicy calamari salad, pad see ew with seafood, and fried salmon with this awesome tamarind sauce, green apple, and peanuts. That was TO DIE FOR. Incredibly unique and flavorful. I wasn't sure about it after just hearing the description, but man was it amazing. The sweetness from the sauce and apple perfectly complemented the salmon. Very fresh too. And the pad see ew. WOW. Big, thick, chewy noodles, with a sauce FULL of flavor. It was picture perfect, and a big portion. I have a huge appetite so o ate it all, but I was quite full afterwards. The only reason I give 4 stars is because the calamari was a bit chewy. Too chewy. But the flavor of the salad was really impressive. I will absolutely be going back here, and will not be trying any other Thai places in Richmond anytime soon :)
(4)Chris T.
I am being nice about the 1 star. The fried calamari appetizer was priced at $9.50. Anyone who knows anything about the food service industry could tell you that the calamari was bought premade in a box. The same batter is used on mozzarella sticks in American chain restaurants. The steamed dumplings were ok but the sauce had the consistency of maple syrup and it was overwhelmingly sweet. The crispy duck with basil was overloaded with veggies and lacked a fair amount of duck for the price. When I asked for Thai spicy it came out lacking and spice at all. As a person who loves Thai food and who is half Thai I was extremely disappointed with the food. The service was lackluster at best
(1)Anthony T.
Great food paired with attentive service always makes for a good experience. I went here with a friend for lunch and I ordered a Panang Curry while my friend had Pad See Ew with Thai Iced Tea. We were famished, so it was great that our food came out ten minutes after we ordered. The curry was flavorful and not overly spicy (at spice level two -- I recommend this level for those who like spicy but can't tolerate it very well) and had plentiful meat and vegetables. The Thai Iced Tea had a good, strong tea flavor and wasn't too sweet. Service was excellent and attentive. Although the lunch prices seemed a bit expensive compared to what I am used to at other restaurants, the portions, the quality, and the service warrant the cost.
(4)Shanthi W.
The food here is overpriced and the rice portions are very very small-- I would recommend buying another order, you'll need it. The parking here is okay carytown is generally busy regardless of the time you go. The first time I got take out I stressed I was allergic to peanuts and they still included it in the sauce with the fried spring rolls, needless to say I got sick. I like Mom Siams 1 and 2 way better
(3)Alice G.
Solid 3 stars-maybe even 3.5: delicious succulent thai food! I had the perfect ginger chicken . I asked for it to be on the spicy side and it was PERFECT- delicious crisp veggies and fresh fragrant ginger and garlic- yum! Quality jasmine tea too!
(3)Matt B.
The lesson learned on my visit to Ginger Thai (Taste) was that Richmond, Virginia really doesn't have any "bad" Thai food destinations... well, aside from maybe Thai Gormet in Hanover. Ginger Thai felt and tasted like a traditional, family-owned, local restaurant serving "authentic" fare. The quaint location in Carytown sticks out as a little bit of a sore thumb, or maybe a sore pinky toe - this place is TINY! You are certainly well advised to avoid eating here during the busy hours, at least until the nice outdoor - covered, but not heated - patio is opened. Ginger Thai does offer reservations, something highly recommended if you're going out on date night or on a weekend. The interior design and decor certainly leaves something to be desired, but who are we kidding? This is a Thai restaurant. The interior is either poorly organized or too crammed. Enjoying the conversation of your neighbors was not the most enjoyable and left me wondering if I wanted my neighbors to hear mine. However, this may have been the intent to allow a two-person staff to seemingly cook and serve for the entire establishment. My opinion started high, as I started eating, and started to plunge towards mediocrity by the time we finally got a check. As with any ethnic food joint, you really have to take the ambiance and service with a grain of salt. Sometimes the best foreign cuisine is found in the oddest little dive. Ginger Thai certainly does not break that mold. (Note: This almost earned Ginger Thai a 3/5 stars) With that said, the food was quite delicious and flavorful. The go-to measuring stick for any Thai establishment is their fried spring rolls and their Pad Thai - the go-to American dish for Thai newbies. We also enjoyed the Massaman Curry - a flavorful, spicy Muslim curry which includes potato, peanuts, pineapple, and vegetables. The appetizer of spring rolls excelled in warm, crunchy flavor and well seasoned vegetable filling accompanied by a delicious Thai-peanut sauce. Ginger Thai serves these the way they should be served. Ours were a little mushy, but that can be solved via technique. The Pad Thai excelled in a deep level of flavor hitting on the many notes required by this complex-yet-simple street food. They key to any successful Pad Thai is ensuring that the rich flavors of each of the ingredients can be tasted - Ginger Thai hit each of these aromatic notes as well as any I've had. The smooth texture of the flavored rice noodles juxtaposed with the crunch of crisp veggies, the sweet caramelized onions and palm sugar complimented by the bitter-sour tamarind, and the rich fish sauce paired with the earthy-fresh flavors of bean sprouts and crushed peanut. Spot on! Ginger Thai's Massaman Curry excelled in providing a warm and spicy richness packed full of flavor. One of my favorite Thai dishes, due to the combination of chili pepper heat and the sweetness of fresh pineapple chunks, this dish is a hearty stew with potatoes, carrots, and onions. Taking a sip of the curry broth, I shot back from a kick in the mouth of spicy-heat - "Hot" is certainly hot enough at Ginger Thai. My only complaint was in the reduction and thickening of the curry, it was a bit watery, but again the flavors were evenly balanced leaving a dish that I ate every last drop of. Setting aside the lack of ambiance, space, and service Ginger Thai succeeds at providing delicious Thai flavors at a moderate price. Add this one into your rotation of Thai Diner / Thai Diner Too and you certainly won't be disappointed!

Kind of pricey for stuff I can make at home but really yummy anyway. This is usually me and my other halfs' go-to place. The service is always really good and I love the Thai iced tea!

I am not a huge thai food fan, but I went here for dinner with some friends and had a very solid experience. The prices are a little higher than I am used to, but the serving sizes are large enough to not leave you hungry, and perhaps large enough to leave you something to take home. I had the drunken noodles with chicken at medium heat (2 out of 5). The spiciness was definitely there, I would say a perfect amount. My friends had pad thai, pad see ew, and red curry and all were satisfied with their meals. The tables are a little too close together. The service was efficient. It was cold outside, but their outdoor patio looks like a good spot to watch the world go by.

Of the three thai places in cary town ginger costs the most and has the smallest portions but the food is more flavorful/better than the others.

A small and a neat place. The food is authentic and well prepared. I love their drunken noodle which is a must try at this place. Also nice is their pad thai and fried rice. Be careful while you select the spice level. We once ordered the highest spice level and it was hard to finish the meal though I can handle good deal of heat. Parking is hard to get during peak lunch hours. This is better than any thai restaurants in d/t area.

Have been here twice - and had the best Pad Thai both times. Lots of different options to add such as meats, seafood, veggies. I have tried both the mild & next up on the spice chart depending on my mood. I really need to try something different, but I've enjoyed the pad thai so much I keep going back to it. The waitress that we had both times was pleasant and very efficient; maybe one of the owners? My only thought is the pillows? They look really pleasant, but I can't help but keep thinking "how clean are these pillows?"

Could not enjoy my meal for those nasty pillows that were filthy, and sticky in the booths.....nope... cant do it

VCU medicine program was hosting their pre-interview dinner at this restaurant so they covered the cost. I tried their thai iced tea, crab Rangoon, spring roll appetizers, and pad Thai combo with chicken beef and shrimp. Crab Rangoon was really good with their peanut sauce but the spring roll was plain, just empty carbs. Our resident should've ordered the shrimp spring roll instead. The pad Thai, on the other hand, was good with all that meat. They give so much yummy noodles, I had to take about half of it home. One of the female applicant next to me ate like one fourth of her pad Thai and threw the rest away. I wanted to take hers home too but feared the watchful eyes of my residents. Also, if you are here on interview, don't get alcohol because the program won't cover it. The same girl next to me had to pay over $10 for a glass of wine. You should get their Thai iced tea instead :) Oh, and watch out for their spiciness. I wouldn't recommend going too high, I chose the second spicy from the bottom and I could feel it. One of the guys got the spicy one level above me and he couldn't finish his fried rice.

Nice Thai place in Carytown. There a few Thai places within just a couple blocks, none are spectacular but all of them are decent, this place included.

This is actually a review for 2.5 stars. I usually go to Thai Diner too when the Thai craving hits and I'm in Carytown, but decided to try this place. Wish I had this forewarning, though: not a very friendly place for your wallet, especially if you're a student. Menu is set up a bit differently; they give you a list of entrees, and pricing all depends on whether you choose to add Vegetables, Tofu/chicken/pork, Beef, Combo, Seafood, etc. I ordered the pad see ew, which came out to be $19 (gratuity was added due to our party of 6). I found that to be outrageously expensive (sitting there, I vowed to learn how to make Thai food at home...). However, I'll admit, my meal was filling and delicious. The sauce was not too sweet (usually have that problem with pad see ew), and the rice noodles were big and plentiful. Chicken and broccoli pieces were large as well. Carrot slices were also in the pad see ew, which I found unusual, but it added a nice sweetness to the dish. It was actually so good that I finished my plate clean, and I'm that girl who never finishes her food/always asks for a box. Overall, really pricey but good food. Wouldn't come back, however, unless they lowered the prices or had reasonable specials at least.

Best Thai around! Hands down. Drunkin noodle and tom kha soup is outrageous. Watch the spice level...their medium is like spicy anywhere else. Can't imagine how hot spicy is. You can always get hot sauces in the side. Just get mild if u don't want a burn or medium for spicy. This is a family run authentic small cozy place.

Blah. Their food is very generic and expensive. I've been here several times and each time, I leave unhappy. Their chicken satay is dry and bland. Their drunken noodles barely have any sauce on them, and they barely give you any meat. Their curries have a muddled flavor. I can just go on and on. Service is also very slow whether they are busy or not which just makes the experience here more frustrating. If you can, check out Pad Thai Restaurant in Mechanicsville [ yelp.com/biz/pad-thai-re… or Thai Flavor in Glen Allen [ yelp.com/biz/thai-flavor… both offer much better food at reasonable prices. Food: 2 Value: 1 Service: 2 Overall: 2

Excellent, authentic Thai paired with good service and a cozy atmosphere. Tony was our server and he was excellent too. Go milder than you think you want on the spice...it's spicier than you'd expect.

I'm a huge fan of Thai food and have been trying out as many Thai places as I can in Richmond. I finally made it to Ginger Thai for lunch, and was pretty happy with my experience. Our food came super fast, and our server was so sweet. I had the pineapple chicken with mixed vegetables, and although there was not enough pineapple for me, the sauce was really delicious. When I go to a Thai place for the first time, I usually go for mild spice, just in case. I've found that "mild" means different things to different people! For Ginger Thai Taste, "mild" means "none." There was absolutely no heat to my dish. To me, that's better than not being able to finish my dish because it's too hot, but now I know for next time to definitely go for the medium. And there will definitely be a next time!

I highly recommend any of Ginger Thai's curry options. Sooooo delicious!

Excellent choice for a night out in Carytown. After sharing a wonderful Satay chicken appetizer, I had the Mussamen curry and my wife had the pineapple chicken. Both were excellent main courses with huge portions. Prices were high for Thai but on par or lower than other Cary Street restaurants. The only negative was that it was a dirty/cluttered. Not health code violation dirty but definitely needs a thorough spring cleaning and new paint.

Not bad, not great. Came here on the recommendation of a friend (I'm not local). We had the chicken satay appetizer (very good), panang curry (decent), and the pad thai with chicken (also decent). Wasn't blown away by anything but also wasn't disappointed by anything. Dessert was a Thai custard that was every bit as terrifying as it sounds. It actually didn't taste all that bad but it looked so horrible I couldn't even finish it (green rice surrounded by a weird doughy/pudding/yellowthing and topped w sweet cream). The food didn't live up to the prices, in my opinion. Service was excellent though. I felt like the lead waitress saw us all as her children and she wanted to make sure we were all being properly fed and watered. It was endearing. So. Get satay. Don't get dessert. Smile at your waitress. And you should be good to go!

We found this little Thai restaurant on our way to Florida. The massaman curry is one of the best I've eaten. My wife had a Thai salad was delicious.

Solid Thai food. Ginger Thai excels at making their dishes spicier rather than more flavorful. Drunken noodles pretty good, not as good as at Thai Flavor. Panang curry sauce very thin, very spicy, not as robust as I'm used to. Delicious Thai iced tea.

I've eaten great Thai food all over the country. I truly feel this is the best Thai food in Richmond. I love their shrimp fresh spring roll, larb gai, basil fried rice and all their curry dishes. Their pad Thai is also delicious though it's not what I usually order. Excellent location in Carytown and friendly service. We've been going regularly for 8 years.

Service isn't that good and very pricey; but food is absolutely tasty. Whenever my boyfriend visits me, we always had to get their Tom Yum soup. $7 is maybe too much for a bowl of soup but the flavor and amount of veggies they put makes it worth it. Their Pad Thai is also fantastic!
