A friend of my wife's turned me on to this place. They were both from the Richmond area and went to college at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA about 2 1/2 hours from this place. The friend craved subs from here so badly that she would drive from JMU just to get a sandwich. Hmmm... Anyhow, this is a local joint that only folks from the Varina area know about. I am not from Varina but drive about town for work and looked this place up when my wife and her friend mentioned it to me. It definitely has its own style, ambiance and flavor. You can get all manner of subs and sandwiches here. They are known for their cheese steaks but I usually get the Italian sub. What makes them so good? I think it is the combination of pretty good bread and solid, old school sandwich steamers that heat the sub, thoroughly melt the cheese into a gooey consistency and basically toast the outside of the bread just right. I am not sure that their ingredients are that different from other sandwich places. I have always said that it is the bread and the preparation that truly makes a sub and this place has that nailed. You can get fries here as well which is a nice indulgence or some pasta salad as a side. Don't miss out on the limemades which you can get plain or jazzed up with cherry or grape. Tried the cherry today and it was definitely for the sugar lover (that's me). This is a family run establishment that has been around over 20 years, I believe. They used to cater to the various concert venues in Richmond and the walls are covered with autographed pictures of artists with various staff members, adding to the overall coolness of the place in my mind. If you are over in the east side of RVA, come check this place out...

I've been coming here since I was a kid. Dropped in today and nothing had changed. Best subs in Richmond.

An excellent example of why Yelp! Is awesome. I would have never stopped here if I had not seen the rating and read the reviews. This is a great local sub-shop.

My first time to eat here yesterday and now I wish I lived closer to Classics because I really like this sandwich shop. It actually looks out of place with the development in the surrounding area but that all just adds to it's appeal for me. I think this shop has been around since the 80's. There were so many subs and sandwiches to choose from and I can't wait to go back. I ordered the Reuben sandwich and bf had the italian sub. It is interesting to watch the sub being "steamed" (?) and it does make the cheese all melty and just yum... yum.. YUM. made to order limeade was ... wow. a definite stop for me if I'm in the area... will even possibly make up an excuse to be in the area... yum. per bf: he actually didn't like that the cheese was too melty/ "gooey" and he said a reuben should be grilled not toasted....

Actual Rating: 3.5 Stars I have a love/hate relationship with Classics. I love that it is low-key and serves warm sandwiches and french fries but hate the pricing and quantity of food that you get. The first time I went to Classics I had the 6 in. Italian sub w/ small fries and my fiancé also had a 6 in. sub w/ fries. The sandwiches were placed on individual trays on a paper placemat, no plates. Needless to say, I hope they wash and sanitize these trays. The food was good. Sandwich was warm, everything seemed to be of good quality but I left hungry (I do not require a lot of food to begin with). Leaving a sandwich shop hungry is not okay when two sandwiches and two handfuls of fries cost $20. The second and third times that we have went have been much of the same. The second time I went, I ordered a cheese steak and that is nothing more than a steak-um that I can fix at home. The limeades are good but any extra flavor is an extra 35 cents. The stinginess of this place is apparent with the whole put the sandwich on the paper placemat on the tray thing as well as how they charge for every little extra and limit the number of ketchup packets they give you. A bright spot is that the service is friendly. While I think that Classics is good, I just do not get the hype based on the other reviews. I will go back because I like warm sandwiches and I like the ability to order fries with my sandwiches.

Classics is a blast from the blast! The sandwiches and lime-aid were great as was the trip down memory lane. This place is completely preserved from the 80's including the menu on the wall and I loved it. I had the Italian sub, which was fantastic, hubby had a Philly, kids had hot dogs. Service was very friendly and the place was spotless. There is loads of seating inside, you place your order at the counter.

We (partner, son, myself) used to eat here frequently perhaps 20 years ago and liked it a lot. Four days ago I got carryout... one of the dishes I ordered was a Caesar Salad. I got home and the "Caesar Salad" was made with iceberg lettuce! Sheesh! It was merely a tossed salad with Caesar dressing! A true Caesar Salad must be made with Romaine. And a bunch of other things. I suggest looking up the recipe in The Joy of Cooking. I also had a fresh squeezed limeade. Short on lime, long on sugar. Just adding another wedge of lime or two would do wonders for that. I also ordered a Philly Chicken sandwich, I believe it was called. Like a Philly Cheesesteak, but with Chicken. It was good, but unremarkable. I will give these guys another chance. If they mend their ways about the "Caesar Salad" I'll try to remove that part of the review.

This is what I want from a sub place. They have an expansive menu, are reasonably priced and I've never had to wait long for my food. Also, they probably have some of the best fries in the area. The only thing that is stopping me from giving Classics 5 stars is the fact I've frequently ordered a large fries and it seems no matter what I order they always give me the same size fry order.

The food at Classics is fantastic. It has the best roast beef sandwich that I've ever tasted and the limeade drinks are delicious as well. The inside is very clean and there is plenty of seating if you plan on dining in. They also have take-out if you wish to take your meal to go.

Had a great warm sandwich today (not sure the name): turkey, roast beef, provolone, bacon with all the fixings. Placing the order and payment was a bit confusing, because we spoke with 3 people multiple times, but it also takes the corporate feel away and complements this ma and pa shop.

This is my go to sandwich shop for lunch. Friendly and menu is vast. Haven't found anything I don't like.

The food at classics is great! But I was very disappointed with the price and quantity! The sandwiches and fries are pretty small compared to a lot of other places. Although the taste of their subs are unmatched anywhere around this area. I just wish they increase the quantity and know what their prices some, they would get a lot more business.

One of the best subs I've had in years. Little homey place with helpful staff and the limeade is to die for. Hubby had the Reuben and I had the meatball with onions and green peppers. He is a bit of a Reuben snob and said it was one of the best he had ever tasted. The meatball was on point , the bread crispy toasted and delicious. And the fries. Ahhhh heaven. Lightly salted and hot crispy yumminess. The decor is kitschy and neat celebrity autographed pics on the the wall and nostalgia everywhere. Lunchboxes and toys from the past grace the walls. Go. You won't be disappointed

I wouldn't go out of my way to make a trip here, but if you're in the area and need a sandwich it would be okay. There is no table service, so you order at the counter. When I saw the line, I was excited because that must mean the food is off the charts good, right? Well, not exactly. Sandwiches are really light on the meat. The wrap I had was gummy. Frozen fries. There is a kitschy charm to the place: it is filled with nostalgic memorabilia, plays oldies and the woman behind the counter calls everyone, "Hon". If you are looking for nostalgia, this is your place. If you're looking for great food, keep on driving.

Great food. Quaint setup and friendly staff. One drawback is small portions for the price.

Great cherry limeade only reasons for the two stars. Their "Philly Steak" absolutely SUCKS! Unchopped Steakem and I'm not sure if they even used a grill to heat it. If I lived in this area I'd open up shop across from them and make true authentic Philly cheesesteaks and subs. Major letdown Yelpers!

Great sandwiches. This place is hidden; must follow GPS to find this place. Worth finding this place. The food here is awesome!!

The bottled water here is delicious! They keep it nice and cold in the back, and serve it upon request. At only $1.60 per bottle, it beats the heck out of chain restaurants where they charge you much higher prices. And it's name brand water too, not that off-brand stuff you often find at smaller restaurants. Highly recommended!!

I can only echo what everyone else has said. This is a quintessential American eatery....had a basic meatball sub and it was great! Service is fast and friendly, prices are very reasonable. I'm not sure if it's the way it's supposed to be or not, but the lime aid does seem a bit heavy on the sugar to lime ratio, and I have a bit sweet tooth. It's certainly not a detractor though. The place is spotless and decorated straight out of the 80s. This is officially my spot any time I'm in the area... Y'all gotta give it a shot!

Good neighborhood place to grab a quick lunch. I tried the philly steak sub with a chipotle mayo and it gave it an extra kick to your average steak sub. Prices and service are great, as well!
