Great find! Cute little restaurant with good prices and even better food. Pickled vegetables were really unique and paired well with my sandwich. Portions were big but we finished everything. Service a bit slow because it's a small place and run by only a couple people. Still, overall nice vibe and delicious food.

I went to Chow House for a quick lunch. The restaurant has weird hours (open from 11am to 3pm). Chow House was very busy around noon. It's not a big restaurant, so seating filled up very fast (inside & outside). We had about a 10 minute wait. I ordered a Betty sandwich (Marinated Korean beef, pickled veggies, red onion, cilantro, eel sauce and avocado crema) with pasta salad. Chow House Betty sandwich was tasty. The marinated meat and pickled vegetables blended well together. I enjoyed my pasta salad but the serving size was very small. I tried Chow House Amante Picante (house-made chorizo, grilled chicken, jalapeno relish, and cheese) as well. It was flavorful and delicious (my favorite sandwich). The banana pudding was tasty. Our server was very attentive. Parking was a hassle because Chow House is located directly on VCU campus. Chow House is a good choice for sandwiches in RVA. I give Chow House a 4.5 rating. P.S. There was a sign saying the restaurant closes this week.

Absolutely love Chow House. Located conveniently in between the Fan and VCU campus, it's a great casual place to grab a bite to eat or get a takeout. The last time I've been here was about a year ago, and when I went today their menu selection has more than doubled! My friend and I got the Hot Chix and PB Sammie and I really can't decide which I liked more because both were SO delicious in a different way. Hot Chix - fried chicken sandwich tossed in habanero sauce. The chicken was huge!! It was literally popping out of the buns on both sides. It's also pretty spicy so hope you can handle the heat, and the breading was perfect and soo crispy. PB Sammie - This was recommended by our server and it did not disappoint! It's BBQ pork with caramelized onion (really good here) with chili aoli and tons of slaw on top. The BBQ was flavorful without being salty, which sadly happens at many places. The buns were also perfectly browned and toasty. Sides - The FRIES are a must-have here and they literally give you so much that it's more than enough for 2 people. The pasta salad was more bland than flavorful and kale salad was just okay. Service is always great and the guy constantly checked up on us. This is a small place but they have 3 group tables that can sit a maximum of 6 people each.

Good food and big portions. The burgers have so much stuff in it, they are about 10" high. The fries are delicious. We went here for lunch based upon the high Yelp reviews. We thought it was that good we went back the following week. Parking is readily available at the side streets a block down. Watch for the hours. I believe they are only open 11-3 earlier in the week. Then also in the evenings on Thursday and Friday.

During our dinner at Chow House, Justin and I found ourselves saying that we wished somewhere like this existed in DC: good, creative food where 90 percent of the menu is less than $10 and draught beer is just $5. I'm sure it helps that Chow House is catering to local college students but there are a shit ton of colleges in DC and no where near enough good cheap eats. After a couple of hours in the car and battling rush hour traffic, we made our way to Chow House. Street parking was free right outside the restaurant and we were able to snag the last free table inside, pretty lucky since it's a small dining area. We ordered the Sinful Spuds (fries loaded with shredded cheese, bacon, green onions and cilantro; $8) with the $2 add on pork butt as a starter though all of the food came out at the same time. The fries were fairly limp but the meat, bacon and Ranch certainly helped and we nearly finished the plate. The few sprigs of cilantro added a ton of flavor (to a few bites anyway), though I could have eaten half a bunch of chopped cilantro on it. For my main I got the Moo Moo's Demise (burger with a caramelized bacon patty, cheese, jalapeno relish, pickled red onion, chili aioli, lettuce, tomato and a brioche bun; $9.50). I didn't expect much from the warning that it was spicy but was pleasantly surprised. The relish actually had quite a kick! The aioli wasn't nearly as hot but had great flavor. The one thing that I disliked was that the bun couldn't stand up to the rest of the burger. It was delivered to me already soggy on the bottom...and not just the edges, the entire bottom felt like a sponge. That's one of my texture pet peeves and I ended up flipping it over, discarding the bottom and having myself an open faced, upside down burger. The burger itself was a formidable size (or maybe it was the fries that were and I couldn't finish my burger because I had so many of them) but luckily Justin had ordered a much lighter main, the shrimp po boy ($11), and was able to help out. With so much heavy eats I was quite thankful Chow House had a kale salad side option (and no extra charge for ordering the salad instead of fries). The sesame vinaigrette had a ton of flavor and the fresh veggies helped cut through the fries and bacon-cheese-spice laden burger. The dessert menu was very tempting but my full stomach and I were unsuccessful in persuading Justin to order the banana pudding since he would have been stuck with most of it. Instead he got the bread pudding ($4), which he can never resist. The type changes daily and we had one topped with chocolate chips. The bites I sampled were fine, but I'm no bread pudding connoisseur (I told justin it would be better if it was coffee cake and he laughed saying "but then it wouldn't be bread pudding!"), so you'll have to take Justin's word on that; he seemed to enjoy it. Overall a decent product in a cute little restaurant with more than reasonable prices. Chow House is more than worth a stop, especially if you're looking for a quick bite not far off of 95.

The service was quick and attentive. The atmosphere was relaxed. And most importantly, my burger was freaking unreal. Chow House is cheap, quick and delicious.

I can't believe I walk past this place so many time and never try it until now! From the outside, Chow House doesn't look like much, very ordinary. I live around the area for more than 4 years now, I can honestly said that this business location is curse. I have seen many restaurants opened shop here and closed down within months. For Chow House to last this long and thrive despite their limited hours, it is a testimony to their strength. As a party, we ordered the Sinful Spud, the Big Butt, the Betty, and the Po Boy. The appetizer Sinful Spud was a big hit! It was simply one of the best fries we have ever had. The pork belly just took it to the next level. The Po Boy definitely had substance. It is not your average Po Boy sandwiches with tiny little shrimps. Oh no, Chow House did not skimmed on their portion. These are big delicious shrimps and breaded to perfection. The sandwich bread itself is crunchy and not hard like others. For the Big Butt, it was packed with a lot of flavors. The meat was marinated really well and the veggies really reminded me of Banh Mi. I can't commend on the Betty because by the time I get to it, I was too full and must take it to go. However, the others in my party raved about it so it must have been very good. As for dessert, the special of the day was Maple Bacon Bread Pudding. It was like dessert and breakfast combined in one dish! The bread was moist and not overly sweet. They put just the right amount of syrup so not to drench the whole dish into a soggy mess. The bacon bits weren't overpowering or chewy at all. Every components came together wonderfully. This is a great place for lunch and I highly recommended it. They also do delivery and take out as well. You will not be disappointing!!

after waiting forever to try this place I finally had it for lunch today. I really wanted to give it give stars and it really thought I would but it's just not there yet. I had the health but sandwich and a mound of fires! the sandwich was a little soggy but probably cause I did take out, this didn't bother me though. the one thing I didn't like is that the tofu wasn't cooked. it would have been nice if they had grilled it because it would have held together better. I think next time I need to try the fry bread tacos because that's initially what I had my eye on. overall really good flavors, super friendly staff, and insanely generous with the serving of fries! can't wait to go back.

I am, frankly embarrassed to say that I managed to Graduate from VCU before I realized this place existed. I have rectified that oversight by going more than once, now, and enjoyed the place every time. The sandwiches have all been tops so far, particularly the Amante Picante and the Moo Moo's Demise, and they're all accompanied with either a Ridiculous mound of delicious fries or a startlingly nommable kale salad. I intend to return to try the frybread tacos. One hears excellent things.

I came here with my coworkers today and we all loved it. Three of us ordered the Black and Blue Burger - I'm not even a burger person and I ate the whole thing. It was the size of my face. It was DELICIOUS. Also, I'm kind of picky about fries. And their fries were amazing. The vibe was great, the service was great. I really enjoyed the entire experience and would recommend to others!

Went in on a Saturday afternoon around 3 pm to a relatively empty restaurant. There was only one waiter and he was super friendly and immediately sat us. My friends and I have been eyeing Chow House for a while, so I knew it was going to be between the HOT CHIX or AMANTE PICANTE. We ended up getting the SINFUL SPUDS appetizer with pork belly ($2 extra); they were amazing. The pork belly especially stood out. The fries were a little too salty for my taste, but it wasn't enough to keep me getting them again. Along with the pork belly, it had melted cheese and green onion. Yum! I ordered the AMANTE PICANTE for my entree with a side of kale salad. The salad was nothing special, just kale, sesame seeds, carrots, and radish. The dressing paired well with the salad, but perhaps not my entree....The entree though...OMG...BEST SANDWICH EVER. It was a mixture of house made chorizo (perfect amount of spice!), chicken, pickled jalapeno relish, and queso. It was so so so so so good! I would get this every time if I didn't want to try other options. My friend got the HOT CHIX which was also very good. Loved the spice on that as well. My other friend got the pork belly sandwich. That was my least favorite, but still amazing. I give the food a solid 4.3 and the service a 5. I'm rounding it up to a 5 star experience. Run, don't walk, to Chow House for lunch tomorrow. :)

The fry bread tacos are unbelievable. I'm just sayin' it. Get the fry bread tacos with BBQ pork butt every time. The sandwich options are diverse and interesting. For me, that presents somewhat of a problem since everything looks so good. It'll actually take me some time to find the perfect option. This time I went with the BLT&A and it was delicious. The lettuce was a little awkward since it was shredded, but the fried tomatillos and avocado sauce were delicious. But those fry bread tacos!!!!

Food - My party ordered the Sinful Spuds and I ordered the Betty with a side of pasta! And let me just say they do not skimp on the ingredients and definitely the portion. I had to force myself to finish b/c I hate packing leftovers home lol. The Sinful Spuds was definitely worth the ordering. The fries were crispy and there were enough bacon bits and cheese on there to make my tummy happy. As for the Betty, the meat choice was very flavorful and balanced well with the vegetables inside the sandwich also. However, one downside was that it was too salty at some parts of the sandwich and I think it was from too much soy sauce at the bottom of the bread. I wouldn't come back and order the Betty but my friends ordered other AMAZING sandwiches and burgers that I would definitely come back and get. The pasta was alright, I would definitely order fries as my side to get the bang for my buck next time though. I thought the cheese was overbearing and made my sandwich taste a little weird. Bonus, there's siracha on the table already. Price - The price is very reasonable for the amount of food served and I was a happy camper. $9 for the sandwich - I'LL TAKE IT! Service - Maybe because there is only one person serving and greeting customers but service could be better. But this is a small Richmond restaurant, like most restaurants around here and I can see why 2 people working in the front can be too cramp. I'm used to these types of restaurants in Richmond, so it doesn't bother me. A little flavor of Richmond eats for you! Overall, I would definitely come back and try some of their other burgers and sandwiches. It's also a perfect date place for 2!

  • GregMatt A.

Greg- Having lived in Richmond on Main St for almost 2 years now, I've seen this place hundreds of times and when it first caught my eye, I think I assumed it was a bookstore. Well anyone that was hoping for this to be a bookstore, you'll be really disappointed unless you like extremely delicious food at a reasonable price. Ordered MooMoo's Demise-$9.50 (topped with bacon, jalapeno relish, pickled red onion and chili aioli, lettuce and tomato on a brioche bun). As scary as it can be ordering a burger with soooo many toppings, this burger is a pure success. The flavors meld together extremely well yet you can taste them all individually. The bun was probably the softest burger bun I've ever eaten yet with a very thin layer of the inside toasted almost to a non-burnt, crunch. The food critic formerly known as: Matterhorn This restaurant holds a special place in my heart. NOT because I've grown up seeing it every day of my life or anything sentimental like that, but because we tried coming here a few weeks ago for a yelp review, but Greg failed to check the hours of business and I ended up losing all of my gains from my workout. In all seriousness though, if you want to try this place, just make sure they are open first, as they have some unconventional restaurant hours. On to the food! Everything looked good on the menu, but I'm basic - so of course I got the Chowsteak Hoagie which is just a fun way of saying cheese steak. It's got the steak of course, lots of cheese, and lettuce, tomato and grilled onions. This was probably one of the better cheese steaks that I've had - and sadly, my arteries agree. While the bun was a little more toasted then I would've preferred (especially after seing Greg's extremely soft and buttery burger roll) the flavor of the sandwich more than made up for it. For our side , we both got the pasta salad, which is a cold ciltantro pesto penne with feta and tomatoes. This was exceptional as well -- not bland or overpowering like most of the pasta salads that I seem to get. While I couldn't really tell what they were going for with their interior design and table designs, if you can manage to get to Chow House while they're open, you will not regret it! This doesn't seem like an intimate place to go on a date, but more like a casual lunch spot to catch up with a friend. As a plus though -- this place was practically empty, only one person was there when we arrived, getting a takeout order. During the meal, only one other group of three people showed up. Matterhorn OUT!

I had the shrimp Po' Boy . I love that they used Prawns instead of small shrimp. The atmosphere was hipster meets industrial. All In all I would consider going again!

Our family stopped in here after spending the morning at a training camp. We were looking for a place with interesting adult fare as well as a few things kids would like. The Yelp reviews suggested this would be a good stop. We were not disappointed! My wife had the BLT&A sandwich plus pasta salad side. I had the pulled pork sandwich and cole slaw side. Kids had the hot dog and chicken fingers. Everyone really liked what they ordered. Wide local beer selection added to the experience. Bread pudding was genuine (and will cost a half-marathon to burn off). The restaurant is small, family run, only six tables inside, seating for about 26. Service was quick and friendly (from a family-owner). Pretty reasonably priced too.

I've passed this place many times and didn't think anything of it but I finally decided to try it. It is now one of my favorites in Richmond. I ordered the portobello burger and it was amazing. The fries were also perfect. I would definitely recommend this place!

I can see why this lunch spot got such high reviews. I'm not a big sandwich person but this is not your average sandwich place. Delicious hot sandwiches, several in the vein of a bánh mì, and with such great flavors! Very creative use of ingredients and hearty to say the least. My sandwich was enough for two meals. My dining companion thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant's version of a pulled pork sandwich. I can't wait to come back to try more of the offerings. Oh, and for the first time, I tried a Mexican Coke which was served in a glass bottle with a paper straw and tasted like a regular Coke but less sweet. Is it lunchtime yet?

Really cute place, and the fries are perfect, but the vegan sandwich I got was pretty salty, so keep that in mind. My boyfriend got the fry bread tacos and thought they were solid.

My roommate has been trying to get me to go here for months and I finally gave this place a try. The food was well price and awesome. I had the Betty and my roommate had the box chix. They gave us a lot of good quality food.

So filling! The spud fries (I believe that's what it is called) with cheese and bacon and it was absolutely heaven melting! It was endless. It's a great place for group eatery but the only con I have for this place is that it closes early

  • Yasmine V.

We finally decided to make a trip out to Chow House again! I have to say it was absolutely delicious food. I got the Amante Picante and the taste was SO unique. The only thing I can possibly recommend is to put some of the aioli they put on my boyfriends dish on the side. He got the shrimp Po boy sandwich and loved it as well. The French fries were very good also, some of the best I've ever had and the portions are HUGE! I couldn't eat the other half of my sandwich, and neither could he. The guy up front that served us was very friendly and helpful. Our child wasn't having a very good day and wanted nothing to do with sitting down, but h brought us a banana and it helped so we could at least finish our meal. I only wish they would be open at regular restaurant hours so we could visit more often!

Easily the best sandwich shop in Richmond. Their menu includes a range of options, but all consist of quality ingredients with impressive execution. The only drawbacks are that the space is relatively small and the hours don't include dinner time.

Wow am I glad this place is in RVA, and I'm thankful for Yelpers who put it on my radar! I scheduled a lunch date at Chow House a few weeks back, and couldn't wait to try the health nut! Of course, multiple things caught my eye on the menu once we were actually there, but I stuck to my guns and went with my gut. And boy, and I glad I did! The health nut was a darn good sandwich - flavorfully marinated tofu, perfectly pickled veggies, cilantro, sprouts, peanuts, and a spicy peanut sauce all stuffed snuggly into a fluffy sub roll. it reminded me of a vegetarian banh mi, of which I'm always a fan. For my side I chose the kale salad because, well, when given the choice between kale and anything else, I always go with kale. it was a pretty healthy portion for a side, and I ended up taking half of the sammie and most of the salad home with me. Two meals in one... score! My dining companion chose the vegetarian chili, all the way. Translation? It was topped with cheese, sour cream, jalapeños, a sprig of cilantro (I think) and served with a delicious looking hunk of cornbread. This was actually one of the other options that tempted me, and I definitely plan on trying this during a future visit. I didn't try it, but she seemed to enjoy the selection. This casual spot is just a stone's throw from VCU's campus, and they offer both delivery and take out, in addition to dining in. If you're looking for a solid lunch spot (they do dinner, too!), then add this to your list.

Came in on a warm Saturday afternoon with six hungry friends and this delivered just as Yelpers promised. It's a small space and almost full when we arrived but managed to squeeze all seven of us in. The server was patient with us as we were loud and hungry and had a lot of questions. I had the hot chix (never can go wrong with that) and had a bite of my buddy's Amante Picante. Both were delicious. My hot chix came out hot and just the right amount of spicyness. The chicken breast was most and very flavorful. The amante picante was a flavor burst. The grilled chicken covered with chorizo and jalapeno relish was amazing. Everyone loved their sandwiches and vowed to return. They also have an excellent beer selection that supports the local brewers. The missing star was for my salad and "pork belly." I ordered a kale salad with my sandwich and it was as described...chopped kale with a teriyaki based dressing. Guess I should have verified what goes into their kale salad. The other thing was we ordered fries with pork belly and it resembled a pull pork. I didn't get to enjoy the "belly" goodness so much. Anyway, the sandwiches are excellent and at a great price point. Totally worth a visit.

I ate here for lunch on Tuesday. It's right near my office so I intend to go more often. I ordered the Chowsteak Hoagie with fries and it was great. The portions were huge and the prices were reasonable. Also, the service was excellent. It's nice to see a restaurant succeed on this corner for once! (The only reason I took off a star is because of the hours. I think they'd have even more business if the hours were a little longer.)

My new favorite Restaurant in downtown RVA!! Located within two blocks of the VCU MP campus. Look this place up on google maps first b/c it can easily be overlooked if you dont know exactly where it is. Came here on a Saturday for lunch (they also a brunch menu from 10AM til 2PM). The restaurant itself is pretty small, has about 7 or so tables and seats probably about 25 people max. I don't really understand the decor/vibe of the place but the food here is AMAZING. I got the Big Belly sandwich. It's served on a Banh Mi with braised pork belly with a killer sauce. Sauce was sweet and had a little bit of a tang to it. Pork belly was very tender and moist and tasted great. You also get a side with your order and I got the fries. I NEVER thought I would find fries better than Burger Batch or Burger Works but the ones here are a pretty good contender for best fries in RVA. The serving sizes here are very generous and for 9.50 for my meal, I was left with my belly content and my wallet still left with some money.

This place is always a winning place to go eat. Food is very reasonably priced (about $10 for a sandwich and fries). You will not go hungry, these sandwiches are HUGE with a mountain of delicious fries to match. The moo moo demise burger, the fried chix sandwich, the amante picante sandwich, they are all great, fresh, and have an interesting spin with either jalapeño relish or chorizo. I always get a to go container and eat the second half of the sandwich for lunch the next day.

It's Friday night at 7pm. We're hungry and looking for someplace new to try. The menu at Chow House sounded so good online that we were pretty disappointed to learn that they closed at 6pm. Instead we went to a local favorite restaurant and then headed out to lunch at Chow House the next day. The atmosphere is a bit confusing and left me wondering if they're still trying to figure things out. The menu is featured across several chalkboards decorating the restaurant's walls, there's a small counter with a couple of seats, and maybe 6-8 tables. I had the impression we should order at the counter but after standing there staring at the chalkboard menus for awhile we were informed we could sit down and receive table service. While many of the sandwiches and brunch dishes sounded appetizing, we decided to share a few things to better sample the menu. We ordered the crab rangoon, fry bread tacos, and kale salad. The rangoon was very savory and salty. The filling was a bit on the runny side but had good flavor. The dipping sauce was pretty thick and a little too cloying. Not bad but different. The fry bread tacos were good - crispy, hot fry bread filled with BBQ pork belly and topped with pickled vegetables and cilantro. We felt the pork was a little over-sauced and the pickled vegetables didn't really taste pickled. The kale salad was basically chopped raw kale with some sesame seeds, julienne carrots, and a nice sesame vinaigrette. The salad wasn't dressed at all which made it a bit of a rough salad to eat. I just prefer my kale salads massaged or slightly wilted. All the food comes out on paper in a plastic basket or metal tray, coffee in Styrofoam cups, and plastic utensils. They also offered a small selection of wine and local beers. The service was friendly and overall the food was pretty good. Enough of the dishes sounded intriguing enough that I'd like to return and try more.

I am really happy I found this place. It's small but their food is huge with portions and flavor. I got their big belly sandwich. It was pulled pork with their house BBQ and pickled veggies. Nervous about the pickled veggies cause in just so used to cole slaw being the only thing on my BBQ sandwich but it was full of flavor and just super tasty. My friends and I decided to share their big spud appetizer and it was so much we ended up just taking it home. All of us really enjoyed their food. The menu may be small but you get a lot of food for what you are paying for (which isn't to badly priced if you are a college kid!).

Made a pick-up order for a group of 6. Everyone loved their dishes and they did a great job on having everything ready to go; orders were accurate - napkins, silverware, condiments we needed and ready on time! You can turn any sandwich into a salad - LOVE IT!

This is definitely one of the best new restaurants in Richmond! If you're looking for great and unique food at an affordable price, this is the place! The fry bread tacos were fresh, unique and delicious as an appetizer. My friend, who's quite picky, said the crab Rangoon was the best shed ever eaten. She said the same for her burger. My shrimp po'boy was amazing! I loved the not-too-spicy yet sweet sauce on the sandwich and the mountain of fries was a perfect compliment! I can't wait to go back!

Located a stone's throw away from VCU, Chow House offers unique sammie options that have the potential of becoming Richmond classics. Our group thoroughly enjoyed: The Betty (Korean beef with pickled veggies - similar to Vietnamese banh mi), Fried Oyster Po' Boy (the crispiest oysters I've ever had and the bread was perfect - this one rivals po' boys found in New Orleans), and the B.L.T.&A. (Bacon, Lettuce, Fried Tomatillo and Avocado - love the tomatillo twist for the "T"). Sammies also come with a side; my kale salad was yummy but a little heavy on the sesame dressing. Don't forget to ask about their weekly specials and seasonal bread puddings for dessert; tried a DIVINE white chocolate bread pudding with salted caramel sauce - please make that a regular menu item! Staff is incredibly friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Prices are slightly high but remember that you're getting quality ingredients. This place isn't large so I'd advise rolling in with a smaller group. Oh yes, they also have breakfast items until noon. So they serve breakfast, lunch, dessert AND they run the Food Network on their TV?! Check, check, and CHECK. Super stoked about this new place, can't wait to return and try the rest of their menu. I can already tell it's going to be a regular go-to spot :)

Stopped here for lunch . I ordered the shrimp po boy sandwich ... was not impressed there was wayyyy too much breading on the shrimp and also in addition the breading was very very salty ...on the bright side attentive service, cute and cozy atmosphere Im not writing this place off the list entirely Im willing to give it another shot sometime in the future

Another restaurant on the corner of West Main and Morris St (RIP Boo's Brown Bag) and I think it is a good fit for the area. Hope it stays a while. The food was very good and good for the price point (most entrees less than 10 dollars). We were in the mood for wings tried the appetizer with curry sauce and habanaro. Both were excellent and wings are good size. If I had to pick I would go with the habanero flavor, nice and spicy. Want to try thai peanut next. We then tried oyster po boy which BF said was good and I tried the chicken chorizo sandwich with queso and it was good but a little dry. The amount of fries were huge and more thinly hand cut. They did not seem super fresh unfortunately. I wish one of us tried another side. I think both of us were satisfied but want to try other things because they sound pretty tasty. There are a few tables and carry out service. Such a good location for those near VCU and Oregon Hill. Server was friendly and checked on us.

Walked in with a wonderful greeting from the staff and great service. There wasn't that many people around but then again it was almost closing time on a weekday, which they are open 11-4. I ordered the Big Belly. It tasted amazing with the house BBQ sauce, pickled veggies, cilantro and I think it was aioli? Complimented with a side of sweet potato fries. The only thing was that they don't do fountain sodas, just bottles but it made it unique. Will definitely have to come back and try other sandwiches.

Chow House is wonderful! Very casual and comfortable environment with friendly staff. It's a tiny place but has some awesome decor which gives it a good vibe. The food is fresh and tasty. I ordered the fry bread chicken tacos and they were great. I'd recommend this place to anyone. I went to Chow House again about a week ago and I tried their shrimp po boy. I loved the flavors of the shrimp and Old Bay aioli! It had some fresh lettuce and tomatoes which was great but the sub roll was disappointing. It was toasted (which I love) but this one was too toasted. I hurt the roof of my mouth eating it. I ended up eating it as an open face sandwich because that more manageable. I'm also not a fan of the fries here so next time I'll go for a different side. Overall, I still like this place!

This is a special surprise with a refined flavor coming from what must be a creative and well attuned mastermind in the kitchen. Very friendly service and a hip and modern, yet grounded and alive, atmosphere. $4 beers and salads that, after eating half of my partner's, I'd consider ordering over their truly tasty veggie burger make this place hard to pass up. Top of my charts.

6 to go meals were ordered. 6 people loved their meals. Ranging from the Diggity to the Betsy. 5 stars easily.

This place is a local gem! I do not live in Richmond I was visiting my aunt and she chose places that we could eat off of the local suggestions. Boy am I glad we came here! The menu was small and to the point. VERY decently price for the flavor and quality of food this place rocked! I look forward to going to see my aunt again lets jus say that :)

We all ate too much. I had half a Betty and half of a PB sammie. Both were delicious with the PB Sammie being the best. We had a party of seven and everybody said they would be happy to have ordered any of the dishes on the table. Nobody ordered a shrimp po boy but we saw someone else with one and it looked great as well. The fries do not look like they would be good but they are. Everyone ate their mountain of fries. The fries are very greasy so be prepared to run through some napkins. Lots of pale beers and very few hop heavy beers.

First time here and sorry we've waited so long to try it. Already planning what I'll get next time! Amante Picante and Hot Chix today and both were incredible.

Delicious, savory food that can best be described as Latin/Asian fusion. Great portions with some awesome side options. Had a Big Belly barbecue sandwich, which had cilantro on it. I love cilantro! Look forward to seeing how the menu evolves as folks make requests--they're open to customer feedback, which is fantastic.

Excellent! Had the Betty as a salad _ yum! My husband had the amante picante which was tasty! My son had a sandwich with the barbeque and a kale salad. Very good too. Service was excellent. Definitely will go back.

I live less than a block away & I finally decided to try Chow House a few weeks ago. I ordered the Big Belly Sandwich & kale salad to-go & it was AMAZING! It's probably one of the best sandwiches I've had in my life, so flavorful & delicious. I will definitely be returning whenever I get a chance. One of my new favorite RVA hot-spots!

Umm... Delicious. Everything is so fresh and paired so well together. I've had the Betty, a BBQ chicken special sandwich, the kale salad and their pumpkin bread pudding fresh out of the oven. I was floored by everything. So many depths of flavor and executed flawlessly. These owners clearly love food and are great at being inventive. Love this place.

This place is cute and so conveniently close to VCU. We ordered the Sinful Spuds with the bbq pork butt as an appetizer and they were sooo yummy. The Shrimp Po Boy is something I will definitely want to order again. The Cajun aioli on it was delicious and the shrimp were a nice size, and not too much breading. I tried it with a side of their pesto penne pasta salad which was good too. We also ordered the Hot Chix which I would've liked a lot more if the breading on the chicken wasn't so salty. I took some of the breading off which there was a lot of. That came with a side kale salad which was nice and simple. There's so much more we want to try so we will definitely be back!

I got the fry bread tacos and they were not very good. The bread was so tough and drenched with grease, the carnitas was extremely dry with no flavor and the pork belly was just too greasy and fatty for me. However, two of my friends also ordered and their food was really tasty. The catfish special and steak melt special. I just want to know what's really good on their everyday menu. I'll probably try it again just a different selection and different meats. The place is a small nice restaurant kept very clean and the cashier and phone personnel were so friendly. I'd say just give it a try!

This is a solid hole in the wall burger joint. Well priced menu and plenty of value for your dollar. I came in at 2pm, so it was a bit off hour and nearly empty. Half decent beer selection on what seems to be rotating taps. I had the Moo Moos Demise burger w a side of the handcut fries. The meal was filling and fresh, I would definitely recommend and return.

This place rocks!!. One of the owners is a Retired Captain from Richmond Fire. And let me be the first to tell you he's a great guy I would know since I worked with him. Onto the food the Amante Picante ROCKS!!! It's juicy, spicy and full of flavor! Every time I have been I have never been disappointed. Check this place out.

Here with the family (party of 5). Had the Big Butt sandwich. Seasoned and cooked to perfection. Red cabbage slaw was on point. Nice little selection of VA Craft on tap. Banana pudding was good, bread pudding was great, but the service was superior.

Perfect restaurant for this area and the staff couldn't be nicer. I work very close by and have tried my fair share of the menu...definitely not your average sandwich offering. Love the bread they use. My personal fave is the chorizo and chicken melt sandwich. I believe there is cilantro, pickled veggies, and jalapeño relish on it. Again...much more thought and execution in their sandwiches. Habanero wings are tasty and large. Their fries are thin cut in house...can't believe no other reviewer mentioned them. Very good. Oyster po-boy, catfish, Korean beef sandwiches all very tasty. I'd imagine the oyster is just seasonal...menu always slightly changes which is a great sign and tells me the food is fresh. Also pumped because they are starting breakfast soon. Overall this is my new go-to spot. Highly recommend. I rarely leave reviews unless I'm really impressed.

If I tell you that they make use of a fryer, you might freak out. But with tender meats and great flavors, it's definitely a place worth checking out. Think Mexican meets Asian meets good ole 'Mercian. Fried beef egg roll with a Guac inspired sauce. Fried bread tacos with a variety of meats. For only being open two days, their menu (with I'm sure will evolve some) is outstanding. Yeah, it's fried, but that's part of the charm. Not all of the dishes are fried, which makes it delicious.

FANTASTIC! as good as it gets with delicious food, great portions friendly service AND here it goes...GREAT prices! We were visiting Maymont Mansion and yelped this place. We were not disappointed . Place was empty as it was way after lunch. The server was super nice as he welcomed us. We perused the menu and ordered the wings with peanut sauce. Wings were cooked to a perfection sauce was a little too thick but tasty with the sriracha and ranch dressing mix. We also ordered a steak sandwich that was seasoned well and had a generous amount of meat and cheese. The server brought us a plate to share. Cut fries were on the side and we had to ask for a togo container to bring home leftovers. Amazing experience.

If you haven't tried Chow House you are missing out. Not only are the sandwiches all great (Moo Moo's Demise is my favorite, but I've loved everything that I've tried), but the portions are huge. If you are a fan of fries you'll be in heaven, they give you so many that you can't even see your sandwich on the plate. In general I'm not a dessert eater, nor do I like most traditional "southern" dishes, but the bread pudding is like nothing I've ever eaten. They change it up weekly, so one week you can enjoy a bread pudding made with mixed berries and covered in a berry reduction, and the next week it could be chocolate chip. On top of all of the great food, the staff are what makes me keep going back. You can tell that they really appreciate their customers, and go out of their way to make everyone feel welcomed.

I was looking up for some Asian fusion food, and found Chow House. Over the past 8 years, I have seen over 5 different restaurants open and close in this exact location with a slight modification for each. I was debating on dining at Chow House due to the history of cycling restaurants, but ultimately gave it a shot. The list of Asian Fusion food was limited to only two options, so I was sadden by the lack of diverse entrees. However, the sandwiches were good, especially the Amente Picante... I think that's what it was called. It was a nice experience compared to its other predecessors.

Good food. Most of the menu is upgraded takes on American comfort food (burgers, bbq, etc) with some Asian or Tex-Mex flair. I've been in for lunch twice and had great, tasty meals both times. A great casual spot.

This is a great place - the food has tons of flavor. I have tried many things and I liked them all. The BLT&A was really good. Avacodo on a BLT creamy and delicious. The home made fries are very tasty. The flat bread tacos were full of flavor. The chili hit the spot on a cold night. The staff is very friendly and the decor is relaxed and modern. A great little spot on Main St.

Whoa! Despite the fact that I would have liked the sandwiches to be larger, I would have given six stars. Flawless service, edgy menu, colorful location and cool atmosphere. Service was impeccable. The waitress was johnny on the spot with my every need and beyond. She was brimming with menu advice and eager to pounce on any need that arose. The menu, though not rife with option, was for the connoisseur of bold and industrial flavored. This is a sandwich shop first but with a flair that lays ruin to the garden variety. The chalk board menu beckons my adventurous appetite but certainly would appeal to the more conservative. Korean beef, eel sauce, avocado creme, chili aioli, oysters and peanut sauce are NOT what you envision on a sandwich but these are think outside of the box people! "Uptown" in the fan is a vibrant and colorful part of Richmond right on VCU's campus and, as you would imagine, students steadily come and go and the crowd ebbs and flows with a mix of young bohemians, hipsters and ordinary joes that wish to venture from the mundane. Naturally lit inside, the place has a clean, small industrial fan feel with limited seating. Form follows function, neat and relaxed best describes the feel. I had the oyster po boy, chowsteak hoagie and chicken tomatillo with navy bean soup (yes 3 entrees). The subs were outrageously good. The bread was baked to perfection: crusty in the outer reaches and light in the inner. The fried oyster sandwich was proportioned nicely seasoned with old bay aioli. The Chowsteak hoagie was tender as could be and was adorned with queso and grilled onion. Both subs a savory delight. The soup...oh man...the soup! The texture, mild acidity and deep savory flavors meld together as if from the same womb. If you happen through the fan of Richmond this place MUST be part of your route.

went to the chow house this rainy dismal saturday afternoon. menu looked very unique and server took time to answer all my questions. i decided to go for the double cheeseburger w/ aioli sauce & fried onions plus a side of french fries . wow .... this was killer bee. the taste was awesome and they certainly give you an abundance of food. this was NO ordinary burger, this chef knows her stuff. it was so good I decided to bring my friend this same thing to try. she had heard about the chow house but lives in the far west end, so had not had a chance to get down here. she loved it too ... well worth the trip to the chow house, great food, courteous staff & ultra clean ....

I live just up the road from Chow House and walk past it every day on my way to class. One morning I decided to pop in for lunch. I had the Chowsteak Hogie. It wasn't too expensive and it was a lot of food. The flavors were amazing and the food tasted very fresh. The rest of the menu looked pretty intruiging. Also, the crab rangoons are absolutely fantastic! Highly recommended.

I think they've been open for a week at most. This place needs to stick around for a long time. The place itself is very simple with a few tables, a decent sized TV running the Food Network (awesome), and some cool accent lights and things on the wall. I had the Big Belly. However they describe it on the menu, cool. The simplest description is a modded pork belly bahn mi. It rocked. The piping hot, house-cured pork belly and very cold, pickled, shredded carrot was a great one-two contrast. The aioli had tons of flavor and spice but nothing that overpowered the other flavors. The cilantro was there, but it wasn't to the point where it starts to taste like someone dropped soap in your dish (cilantro is a tricky little herb...). And - get ready because a NY-then-Philly guy doesn't say this often down here in VA - the bread was the way bread should be: dry, flaky outside and yeasty, soft inside. Almost like the fresh Amoroso rolls at Tony Luke's (relax, I said almost!). I think I made it in time for a lunch special because my sandwich was hiding under a mound of shoestring fries. They were dark golden, salty, and the right soft/crunch. They seemed fresh cut, maybe brined (is that a thing with french fries?), and didn't need any sauce to have plenty of flavor. Staff (seemed like generations of a family) were all incredibly, GENUINELY friendly, cheerful people. The place seems to accomplish what a lot of food places in Richmond pretend to be: a simple place with great food. However, most of "those" establishments around here come off as trying WAY too hard (or their food isn't as special/great as they and their friends think it is). The concept elsewhere almost turns into a theme rather than motto. This place seemed like an honest-to-goodness "we just want to sell delicious things to you" kind of place. Perfect for lunch. Perfect for college area (I got out of there under $10 and very full/satisfied). Bottom line: this place already seems to have their ducks in a row as far as quality and execution go. People would be fools to go elsewhere for food in that immediate vicinity since the neighboring places are all around the same price-point, but I can't think of any that brought this much flavor/style. Clearly, I'll be back to try out the rest of the menu/specials.

This place is awesome. The Amante Picante was full of flavor and super spicy (in a good way). The sandwich was plenty big and my side of fries was stacked high. Nice service and cool decor. I'll be back to try the Hot Chix and their wings.

I was visiting my hometown for Thanksgiving break. My mom and I stopped in this cute restaurant with an expectation of your typical sandwich shop. I was wrong. Chow House is amazing. My food was delicious!!! I got the Shrimp Po Boy and the homemade fries. It was a great choice. The restaurant was very clean with a comfortable atmosphere. I had many questions (as I typically do) the service was top notch!! I wish I still lived in Richmond so I could eat there on a regular basis. One thing is for sure I will be back next time I visit.

Earlier this summer, I walked into Chow House on a whim. Little expectation for greatness; after all, the spot had been taken up and subsequently abandoned thrice in the four years I've been at VCU. What would make Chow House any different? An amicable man greeted me as I approached the counter. I smiled, returned the greeting, opened up their paper menu and never looked back. No item on the menu is subpar, the fries are well-worth an independent order, the sandwiches and burgers are a manageable, but filling size, the wait is short, the atmosphere is comforting and the staff amicable and open. Could use some more vegan items on the menu, especially with the vegan population at VCU, but outside of that, a complaint or misgiving would be hard to find. Thank you Chow House. You're wonderful and delicious.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I've had the Oyster Po' Boy as well as the Diggity. Both were absolutely amazing. We also ordered the habanero wings and they were PERFECT. Cooked to perfection, and the sauce was just the right amount of spice without being overbearing. The set up of the place is super awesome and the servers are on point. HIGHLY recommended :)

The food is phenomenal at Chow House. The first time I went, I ordered five different things to take home and ended up sampling all of it on my drive back. Everything looked so good, I couldn't hold back. Everything I've gotten from there has been AMAZING. My favorite is their crab rangoon which has a spicy little kick and mini chunks of crabmeat you can see while you're eating. Along with the crab rangoon, I just tried a spicy chicken sandwhich, which was better than Chick-Fil-A... Which is saying a lot because I love me a Chick-Fil-A sandwhich. The food looks like stuff that would come out of a culinary magazine and it tastes so freakin good. I also took home two little dump cakes for dessert which I devoured by myself. It was so good I ended up scraping off the gooey bits off the edges and and crevices of the pie tin with my fingernail. Sad, but true. If you ever have a bad day, come eat your feelings away here. There is plenty of great food, it's super affordable, and the people that work there are super friendly. They are always featuring something new every time I go in there and it always give me an excuse to come back. You won't be disappointed!!

Pleasantly surprised, a new spot within easy walking distance of VCU. The blt+a was delicious, crispy bacon and lots of interesting flavors. The pasta salad was solid, just what I want in my pasta salad, it's made with mayo but they definitely don't overkill it, with lots of crunchy veggies mixed in. The portions were great , especially for lunch time, and the price was definitely justified, you're getting more than the usual sandwich and chips. The staff was very welcoming and seemed to really care about the place and the food. There's a lot more to try on the menu and I'll definitely be going back, breakfast looked good as well.
