Service was great, atmosphere was quaint. But way too loud for my taste. Its a small place, with maximum tables crammed in. The food was okay, but not really worth the price.

Went for drinks and a small dinner with my boyfriend. He stuck with a beer (smart) and I went for a traditional mojito, which apparently was a highlight on the drink menu. The mojito was terrible. I am by no means a drink connoisseur, but this tasted like a straight up vodka tonic, with the occasional tasteless mint leaf going up my straw. It was undrinkable, to say the least. The pork nachos were acceptable, but could have used salsa. The dish was pretty dry. Thumbs down. Save your money for Carytown.

Love it!! Huuuge portions. Good prices. Even better drinks. Even while busy and shorthanded on a Sunday, our server was super attentive and was incredibly nice..even when our toddler acted out a little. The patio area is the perfect spot for lunch on a beautiful day.

I end up at 3 Monkeys most often for drinks or brunch. I like the outdoor-ish seating area that's great for people watching, as well as the cocktail menu and affordable wine list. The bartenders here are quick and friendly. They do a good job of handling the busy crowds that come here at night. Which brings me to one of my no-so-favorite things about this place. It's not a big restaurant, but it is a popular night spot, so if you want to get a drink in the evening, prepare to be bumped by throngs of college kids and 20 somethings looking to hit on them. I think the food is decent for a bar spot, but not spectacular. My favorite menu item is the Greek salad with grilled tilapia on top. The hummus plate is also very good and loaded with hummus, feta and fresh veggies. A lot of the other items on the brunch, lunch and dinner menus sound great, but just don't quite hit the point of amazing. The last time I got the Monkey Fries, the cheese on them was a bit bland. Similarly, my eggs bruschetta were a yummy idea, but just a little lacking. It's not that I wouldn't or don't eat here, I just wouldn't recommend it for awesome food. I do loving getting a table on the patio here in the evening and hanging out with some drinks, though. If you go, there is a small parking lot in the alley behind the building.

By day, I work for the man, by night I'm a pasta salad connoisseur. There was a time when 3 Monkeys p.salad killed it, but on the past two occasions it tasted like ammonia. Neither of us could finish our meals because everything tasted off. As far as the bar scene goes, sitting out on the patio during the summer is great and if you get hungry, order fries instead.

Food is mediocre. Drinks are meh. After 8pm avoid like the plague. Gets really college bro-y.

Love this place- great food and yummy drinks. The menu is diverse and unique and the dishes are tasty. I love that they are open for brunch, and have an enclosed porch where you can sit with the windows wide open when the weather is nice. They also have a nice drink selection, and well-priced beers. Good place for a happy hour.

I will never go to 3 Monkeys late night as I don't consider it a bar. I pretty much have only gone for lunch or an early dinner, as we all know the crowd that arrives later on. The sandwiches are pretty much the backbone of the place - their french dip is what pulled that fourth star out, it is quite good. Their burger is... just a burger, not quite sure what reviewers expect when they order them. Their bread is usually nicely toasted and their sandwiches are served with your choice of side. I think that in order to work at 3 Monkeys as a server you must be a college aged semi-good looking girl and that their uniform code is all black and as little fabric as the weather will allow. Not a complaint, just an observation.

I've never had a bad meal here. The service has been great in my experience. Eat on the enclosed porch even during the coldest months. I go at least once a month and have never been disappointed. They have always been nice enough to customize my orders for my allergies.

I've been here twice during my time in Richmond and have been impressed each time. The menu is delightfully eclectic and the restaurant has a casual and festive feel to it. Any place that offers spanakopita as appetizer is bound to be decent. The spanakopita was impressive, it reminds me of a smaller version of the kind that my mom makes. I also had the falafel sandwich with fries -both of which were good. The fries were curly and extra crispy My friends ordered steaks and a bit of seafood and enjoyed both. The drinks from the bar were also quality: good selection of beer and strong, tasty mixed drinks. Overall: a good experience at a good price.

It's ok. I wasn't impressed by my eggplant sandwich which had WAY to much bread, basic store bought Italian dressing, and under cooked eggplant, but I think everyone else in my party sorta enjoyed their food and the fries are tasty. They have a nice indoor patio area, but it smells a lot from smoke. This place turns into a crowded bar on weekend nights that's frequented by a college crowd. I'd probably go back to party, but not to eat.

On a recent road trip from Chapel Hill to Washington D.C. I stopped in here with some friends mainly because it was a Sunday night and not much else was opened. The service was super friendly and accommodating, but the food wasn't anything to write home about as it were. I had their burger and it was forgettable. My friends had the Jambalaya and the Pizza. Out of everything the pizza was the clear winner and is what I'd order if I ever find myself in Richmond again, The highlight for me was the fact that their background Music was Indie Rock and they played a lot of bands from the Northwest which I wasn't expecting at all in VA.

Some friends took me here...I thought the place might have some charm...but it was not to be. The patio area, which is an enclosed seating area that feels like a ill-kept greenhouse had a faint smell of vomit. Not something I wanted to smell right before my lunch. I had the monkey burger...a burger with avocado, gorgonzola, etc...basically a giant burger with some stuff on it. The taste combination was ok, but it would have been better just plain. I ordered fries, but they gave me onion straws, which have virtually no onion in them. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The atmosphere was a bit lame. I mean, we walked in and they had CNN on the tv...its the second round of the NCAAs and they were playing CNN. Is this a bar? Anyway...I am sure there are better places to eat in Richmond. Still, it will do in a pinch.

Since a good friend works here, I gave this place a second chance Saturday for brunch. Yes, much better than my experience a few years back! I had the monkey cristo french toast, side of hash browns and fruit. Hmm hmm good! I'm looking forward to another brunch!

Beef tenderloin wrap with mixed greens, tomatoes and gorgonzola cheese and a side of potato salad. Hot damn that was good. Dug the outside closed patio section. Extensive menu with just about everything. Definitely entertaining the idea of coming back- I was impressed by the food, beef was cooked tender and the complexity of tastes in a wrap had me loving every portion of it. Cute waitress had me smiling.

  • Claire B.

Nothing that fantastic. I went with a friend yesterday for lunch because other people had told me the food was really good. I was less than impressed. I ordered the buffalo wrap and the chicken was soggy and the rest of the wrap was so drenched in gorgonzola cheese I barely ate half. Also, the service was decent. A typical bar restaurant I'd say. Nothing really to write home about. Maybe if I got something different I might like it a little more, but I don't think this place would be my first choice to eat in the Fan again.

So one time I went to Richmond to move in by boyfriend and had the coincidence of having eaten at this place literally 3 times in a span of maybe 4 days? Mind you this was because of circumstances which include laziness (it's around the block) and then a bunch of friends came into town and again we were lazy and just walked here for brunch hung over.... Anyway, the bottom line is that this place is just mediocre. The Seared Ahi Tuna salad I got the first time I went there was above average, I'll give it to them. But, after a few bites I wanted more flavor. The next meal I had there was a portebello sandwich for lunch the next day. It was sooo very standard. The portebello was overcooked and the flavors were not sophisticated at all. We're talking shredded iceburg lettuce, bad tomatoes, and probably outta the bottle italian dressing. Not to mention the fries that accompanied were room temp-ish and straight out of a freezer bag. The very last meal I had at this place was brunch with a bunch of my friends. I got the omelette bruchetta, that sounded like it would be awesome.. but again was a dissapointment. Tons of bread with very little omelette and lacking in flavor. Also it was pretty cold. Home fries were not good, straight out of a freezer bag. I would not recommend this place. Mehhh.

My friends like this bar. I don't. But I'm kind of a bar and lounge snob. I like bars with tasty, uniqe beverages. If I wanted an appletini I'd just make it at home, and save a few bucks. It's packed, loud, and just another pickup joint in the bland RVA bar scene. There's colorful "martinis" to be had, and they do put a little plastic monkey on them, so that's cool. The bartenders seem good. Too bad it bores me.

Most young residents end up at 3 Monkeys pretty frequently for drinks. The drink prices are reasonable, but it gets very crowded as the night goes on. The food is okay, about on par with bar food. The Monkey Fries were good, as was the Monkey Cristo. The hummus plate was below average, but not awful. If you're looking to hang out with a bunch of people in the early-twenties this is the place for you, where you can grab some decent pub food as well. This isn't a place I'd go to for a stand alone lunch or dinner, however.

Yaaaaaawn. I didn't even really want to write this review, but seeing as how I use Yelp as a sort of travel journal, I think I should. It was not fabulous and not horrible. I went with my sister and two of her friends, and we just ordered a bunch of appetizers, some good, some not so good. Service and ambiance were ok, the place was clean, and the menu is expansive enough that anyone can find something they'll like. Here's what we had, in order of ok-good to ok-eh: Goat cheese stuffed red peppers: Really tasty, but a bit too heavy. Would have been better if there had been something other than just cheese in the peppers Cowboy sushi (beef carpaccio on a tortilla chip with wasabi, ginger, and soy sauce): This was pretty good, but really didn't need the chip. The Asian flavors all worked well together, so the chip just served no purpose aside from keeping your hands off the beef. Saganaki (sp?) flambee: This was a plate of good, salty cheese cut into cubes. Seriously. When we got it, the waitress poured some alcohol on it and lit it, but I think it didn't stay lit for long enough. It should have melted the cheese and browned the top, but, well, uh, epic fail on that front. The bread that came with it was really, really good, though. Red peppers, mozarella, and basil pizza: Ugh, what a mess. It was absolutely impossible to eat because there was so much cheese on it. The crust underneath all the cheese got soggy and gross before the pizza even got to our table, and there were hardly any peppers or basil on it. Stella's calamari: Rubbery and kind of stinky, but at least one person in our party enjoyed it. All in all, I'd go back if someone else brought me, and I'm sure the full-priced entrees are better, but I would not go out of my way to recommend this place.

    (3)
  • JCob W.

My wife and i had the calamari and it smelled like it was days old and could make you sick, we sent it back, ugh. Then we ordered some simple hamburgers, hard to mess that up right? Well, they sent us well-done instead of med-rare and covered their mistake with fancy toppings. Overall making a bad burger that costs 9 dollars. We were bummed, we thought Greek bar meant good squid and good burgers. I guess the fries were good.

Saturday night cocktails were tasty but the lack of standing room made it difficult to enjoy without a table. Brunch the next morning was a straight disappointment. The waitress forgot to put in our order and our food arrived cold. The breakfast pizza spotted across the room looked better than our French Toast Monte Cristo and eggs sunny-side up. Don't waste your time or your dining experience with either of our selections.

    (1)
  • Kathy C.

you MUST order the cowboy sushi. It is quite good...seared beef carpaccio on homemade tortilla chips and dressed with wasabi, a soy reduction and maybe that Sriracha sauce. Has a little kick to it!

    (4)
  • John T.

Okay, the waitress was friendly and attentive and the place had a great atmosphere, but the beer was incredibly flat, they managed to screw up a margarita, the crab dip tasted like cream cheese, and my buffalo wrap had no buffalo sauce and more blue cheese crumples than chicken... send your enemies here when they come to town, you will be glad you did.

  • Cheryl D.

This place sucked. I would give it negative stars if I could. Went here with friends on a Saturday night. Granted it was busy but half the food for a party of 9 came out almost half an hour earlier than the rest, had to ask the waitress for something 3 times, friend had to send his order back after specifically asking for it a certain way, all the food was way over salted and yet bland at the same time. Two of our friends left after waiting 45 minutes for a salad and when we tried to explain to the manager, she defensively told us someone was going to have to pay for it, even though no one there had ordered it and it was untouched, and how it was unfair to our crappy server not to. FAIL. We were traveling with a very large group of out of towners for a show and told EVERYONE not to bother eating there. Apparently the 3 Monkeys are the chef making the awful food, our incompetent server, and her delusional manager.

I am extremely disappointed with the experience I had at 3 Monkeys today (4/13/2013). I came at 2:30 pm with a group of friends who had just finished the Monument 10k and we were extremely hungry and tired. The hostess had a terrible attitude and wouldn't accommodate us on the porch outside so we sat inside. Then we sat there staring at each other for 20 minutes until someone came to take our drink order. We decided to order our meal at that time because we were afraid it would take too long if we didn't and we were very hungry. At 3:00 we asked our waitress where our drinks were and she said they were coming. At 3:10 we finally decided to leave because we had waited 40 minutes just for our drinks and we were sick of being ignored while everyone else was waited on. As a faithful customer at 3 Monkeys I am appalled by the waitresses laxadasical attitude especially after we had brought this to their attention. We left and went to curbside where we were served immediately with friendly waitresses!

This place is a bar with a restaurant, or is it a restaurant with a bar? Well, whatever it is, it's on the small side with an enclosed patio in the front facing the street. Nothing much in the way of atmosphere. The food was A-Ok. The service was great. Tori was our server and she did a bang-up job. We had the goat cheese appetizer with roasted garlic, although we are not usually ones to eat whole cloves of roasted garlic, especially when we have work the next day : ). Our dinner salads were *really* good, with a fantastic array of fresh ingredients piled high, as well as a pleasing selection of dressings from which to choose. For my entrée, I ordered the seafood risotto and was happy with it except that the rice was cooked somewhat al dente - not my favorite. There was a ton of seafood in the risotto - large shrimp, big slices of squid, oysters and huge scallops. Three Monkeys does *not *skimp on ingredients! I just wish the seafood had been as hot as the risotto. For some reason it was not.... sort of as if it had been prepared seperately from the rissoto, set aside and allowed to cool too much. I ordered a 'Nutty Monkey' martini, which I loved, and want to get the recipe. All-in-all, not great but not bad either. They just need to do some fine tuning and then I think they will be a winner.

My opinion may be skewed because I came here on my birthday and got incredibly trashed but of what I do recall of my food-- I believe I may have gotten some kind of seafood, as well as an appetizer, it was delicious. Also, had ordered some cocktails and they were extremely strong and good. This outdoor seating is great for people watching, as it's it's located in the middle of Main St., and it's always filled with a bustling crowd of people at night. Would love to go back and check it out when sober!

Was in town visiting family, and a cousin took me to 3 Monkeys. Wow! The service the food was just great. It was a hot May evening, but sitting on the patio made all the difference. I had Greek Shrimp tossed with orzo, feta, olives, artichoke hearts, and capers in a light tomato sauce. I topped it off with an apple martini. Family, good food and a night out, it does not get much better.

another place to eat dinner at kind of early (5-6ish) before the night crowd shows up, which i can definitely say is the popped collar, trust fund type. avoid it late, unless this is your scene. the patio is nice, usually not too crowded when we've been, and smoking wasn't allowed, which is a HUGE plus. you might be able to smoke later in the night, but we'd never stick around to find out. the food is decent and portions were pretty big, but it was nothing outstanding. we always get the fried calamari to start off with, and that easily almost fills us up. drinks aren't too expensive, but i wouldn't stay for more than two rounds.

This is strictly a review for the brunch. You MUST order the Monkey Cristo (it's like a Monte Cristo, but you see it's a Monkey... I know, super cheesy). Anyway, it's proscuitto, turkey and brie on french toasted bread. I have a rule about brie: anything with it automatically is 10 times more awesome. I get that the French have screwed a lot of things up, but damn they got it right with brie. This dish has to be about a million calories, but every single one is worth it. Go run a few miles to fight the guilt or don't eat dinner, which you probably won't feel like doing anyway after eating this. They also have a breakfast pizza that looks amazing and people seemed happy to be eating. The potatoes (hash browns, home fries - whatever you like to call them) were really good. Not the typical mushy, soggy spuds that have been sitting on the frying pan all morning. The OJ comes with ice to chill it. Bad deal because it eventually melts and dilutes the juice. The server was a little slow, but it was a crazy busy Sun morning. I just figure that the managers would figure out that it's going to be busy on a Sun morning and maybe staff up. I know, it's a revolutionary idea, but call me a rebel.

The food is good. Apps are HUGE and filling. The server was friendly and worked her hardest to please our group. The menu is fun, and there are a lot of options to choose from. The entrees were flavorful and delightful. Unfortunately I went on a Friday night with my family and we got stuck at the one table in the middle of the rows of booths. Apparently this is the WORST place to be after 7 PM. This place turns into a full blown bar with full on drunken people smoking what seems to be cartons of cigs. EW. This place should @ least be smoke free till 10 PM. By the time we were finished we had to rush to pay b/c drinkers were standing way to close to us all around our table....we felt like a suffocating floating island (they also cranked the music). When I was done all i could say was "get me outta here!". However i might go back for a much less crowded lunch. Sad to say that the ambiance kicked this place down a star for me.

  • Dae-su Oh _.

The rejects from Star-lite comes here when they get too crowded. At least the bartenders were nice, but the crowd is still full of douche-bags and the stuck-up. Hopefully the sport bars that opened recently will make the place less crowded.

    (1)
  • Nic S.

I haven't eaten any of the pricier entrees. My crab cake sandwich was decent and my burger so-so. Star-lite (a similar restaurant across the street) is much better.

This was my first time eating here in YEARS. I'm glad I decided to give it another try. I had brunch with a friend. The waiter, Robert, was very attentive. He was so attentive that when I asked about a possible ingredient in one dish I wanted, the crab dip (which was great), he made sure that the ingredient was not included in my entree (the Chesapeake omelette) because I forgot to state that I wanted the dish without that ingredient. The omelette was good. I ordered extra crab, but it was not needed. I love crab, though, so it was an added bonus on my part. The omelette looked huge, was cook perfectly, and tasted great with all ingredients inside. My friend ordered the same entree and shared my sentiment that it was great. It was a Saturday around 12:30 and it was not very busy, which was surprising. Yet, good for Mr since we were seated as soon as we arrived. All in all, a great visit.

Ate here during burger week so it was packed and also a Friday night. Although we were told a longer wait time, a table opened up fast and we were seated promptly. We both had one of the burger week specials. The burgers were tender and juicy and the fries were pretty good too. They also have a good beer selection. Our waitress was great despite it being super busy and we received our food and drinks in a timely way. I would like to come back when its not burger week to try out some of their other menu options!

3 Monkeys has a great offering for #RVAburgerweek! I stopped in yesterday during happy hour and got a bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, onion, blue cheese and avocado (their Monkey Burger), fries (my favorite shoestring kind) and a Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager for $8.90! What a deal! And the service was outstanding! 3 Monkeys is still just 3 stars overall, but this was a 5-star experience! Yay, 3 Monkeys!

  • Courtney T.

The server was nice... when she finally found her way to our table. Over all the service doesn't seem to have improved and my food was not that great. One thing I can't deny them are good happy hour specials, hours, and drinks.

First time eating there today. Had some basic brunch food and mimosas. The drinks were average, kind of hard to screw up. The food was overcooked and overall not very appetizing. There was a rush and understandably the staff was busy, but still seemed a bit unhappy with having to do their jobs. Looking at the menu and reviews, I thought I would really enjoy this place, but I don't think I will be coming back.

I really enjoy the brunch here and will come back again when visiting Richmond. Not sure why people don't like this place unless they speaking at night. Which it's closer to a college town "young adult" but other than that Sunday morning brunch was awesome.

Nice delicious Brunch!! I was almost scared away by the ratings, but glad we came on the recommendation of our UR student. We ordered the chicken and waffles special, the skillet special, and the goat cheese spinach omelet. All were delicious, hot, tasty! We sat on the enclosed porch, windows open on a glorious football saturday. Another great dining experience in Richmond!

I've come back to 3 Monkeys twice since my last review. Both times I was super disappointed. When we came late at night, for drinks and snacks, the service was nonexistent. We watched our waitress talk to the bartender for a solid 15 minutes while ignoring us. It took her an hour to get us any waters. And she was furious with us when we asked another waiter for our check because we couldn't find her. I came for brunch a few weeks later, and I ordered the skillet breakfast without bacon. It took 45 minutes for our food to come out, and the restaurant wasn't even full. When our food arrived, they messed up my order, and our waitress just rolled her eyes, didn't apologize, and it took another 30 minutes for my correct food to come out. The eggs were rubbery, the potatoes were so salty that I couldn't finish them, and the cheese was cold. When most restaurants mess up your order, you usually receive an apology or they take the dish off of the check, because you didn't receive what you asked for. I got neither. Our waitress had a terrible attitude, our service was terrible, and the food took ridiculously long to come out. Do I really need to spell it out for you? Don't come to 3 Monkeys. They don't value their customers, and the food isn't anything special.

Had brunch here with some friends after the Frostbite 15k. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Ordered the chicken and waffles with a spicy sauce. It was really good except the piece of chicken was tiny. I'd definitely go back for brunch and try other items. I've been there at night with friends and it's a bit too loud for me.

Horrible wait times for food. Waited 40 minutes for an appetizer and an hour and a half for an entree. Wasn't all that great either. Never going back. Try some other places out in the fan.

3 Monkey's isn't known as one of the great brunch spots in Richmond, and now I know why. I was drawn in by their pitchers of mimosas, and figured as long as that was on the table, mediocre food would be okay. But it turns out the mimosas nor the food are worth making a trip back there again. The mimosas were flat, so they either used old champagne (or it was an old batch), or vodka. We couldn't really tell, but it was pretty bad. My first indication that I should be wary about the food is that when I placed my order for one of the weekend's specials, our server told me that it had been ordered the day before by other customers, and none of them particularly liked it. Yikes! I ended up ordering just a standard bacon/eggs/potatoes breakfast that I figured even a highway diner couldn't screw up. The food was nothing special, but when I found a hair in my potatoes, my whole morning was pretty much ruined. Someone else's hair in your food is one of the worst offenses a restaurant can make. If that can happen in the kitchen, who knows what else is going on back there.

Best happy hour specials and best happy drinks. The bartender Dax makes a killer limeade and cucumber gin fizz..and so friendly!! Best service in the fan! Bonus-the $5 burgers on Tuesdays are cooked perfectly.

They've changed :( the menu is still the same, but execution is not. Got the same thing I normally get (beef tenderloin wrap with monkey fries) and everything was flavorless. Fries didn't have scallions, or salt. The wrap used a different, not as delicious, tortilla and didn't have mushrooms. The disappointment was strong with my entire table. Probably not going to be coming back :(

I've only ever been to 3 Monkey for drinks but each time it's been a pretty similar experience. The menu is decent but nothing special and the prices are the same. Service is alright but once again nothing to write home about. Late night it can get pretty loud and crowded but I've also seen the place deserted on weekend nights. I can't really get the vibe for this place.

We stopped by for brunch as soon as they opened. There was no one in the restaurant, so we choose to sit in the porch with the windows open. I decided on one of their specials, chicken and waffles. It was served with three pieces of all white chicken that was lightly fried with a crispy breading. The chicken was perfectly cooked and delicious. The chicken was served on top of a full homemade waffle. The entire thing was topped with a honey glaze. This was excellent! Well done. My wife ordered the eggs and sausage. It was a typical breakfast meal, but it was served with a cheddar biscuit. She liked it as well. The only reason for a 4 star review was because of our service. We sat for a while with empty coffee mugs that needed a refill. In addition, we had to wait a while for the check. We will definetly go back for brunch.

We came here to have a couple of drinks as a first stop around the Fan last night. We got there around 1130, and due to the cold it was by no means crowded. The four of us took a booth and were served our first round without problem by a seemingly pleasant waitress. One of our group went to the bathroom, and after dodging the guy puking in the urinal, brought back a round of shots for the table. Before he could even hand them out the waitress pounced on him, got extremely belligerent, and ordered him to not order shots from anyone but her. She then threatened to close us out. Well good job sweetheart, we closed out and left and left our unfinished drinks on the table. Either this girl was so stupid she doesn't understand how being a waitress works, or she was on some kind of mind altering substance. Getting loud and berating your only table is certainly going to pay the bills. I wish I could give this place 0 stars.

My first experience here left me never wanting to come back. The bouncer almost did not let me in because he took one look at my ID and told me it was fake, which it's not. Once inside, the place was just okay. I hate to base my whole opinion of the place on one bad experience, but the guy working there was just so rude that I don't know that I want to give it another shot.

I went to 3 monkeys with my girlfriend and her best friend and it was amazing!!! Of course it was cold outside but this was the night my team Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore were playing but we ordered the crab dip as an appetizer! Can you say Awesomeness in '3 monkey' language? Lol I would definitely return

Gotta say this place has one of the best Bloody Marys I've ever had. Spiciness was close to perfection. It had so many garnishments it looked like a Bloody Mary salad. They should make it an appetizer. Perfect, spicy, bold and gaudy as all hell. I loved it. The food was great also. As well as the wait staff. Kudos.

We went on a sat night around 10:30, it wasn't too crowded.. the beer selection on tap is pretty impressive, many local brews. We ordered the anduiolle sausage pizza.. eh.. ok nothing to rave about, but for drunken stooper nights-- 3 monkey fries.. awesome! fries were thin and crispy.. covered in real cheese, crispy bacon and house made range.. i could def eat like 3 of those. over all, 4 miller lights, 1 pizza, 1 fries, and a pitcher of beer for around $60-- service was pretty good also even though the place was redunk crowded.

This place has always been a fun bar to go to if you are 25 or under but once you get beyond that age, it would great if the food was good but it's just not. Multiple things I've had there aren't good and actually even gross. It's a good idea and a good location but they just need to completely change the menu, cooking, and let everyone know they did so.

We came here because they have cheap pitchers of mimosas and they were the only place with no line, but their food is unacceptable. The eggs Benedict was basically hard boiled and another one of my friends got two eggs over easy with a large piece of shell in it. Their breakfast potatoes are cut ridiculously small and other places are worth the wait

A nice chill spot with a lot of what looked like yummy Monkey drinks. Of course I couldn't try them all. I had the Mango Monkey which was nice. I typically like sweet drinks and this met most of my sweet need. A couple of other monkeys caught my eye, but I held back and the price of $7.00 per drink sort of helped with that too. :)...Drinks aren't something I would generally splurge on (yes $7 is approaching a splurge zone for me)..I'll save that change for an outfit or something. It looks better on me. :) Okay back to the review... The food was okay. I had a turkey sandwich so nothing special. I would go back and I suggest you go at least once if you haven't been already.

Went with a friend on a week night around 6:30pm. Dinner menu offered some diverse choices except that they were "out of " a lot of stuff, went through 3 options before finally ordering something they actually had available. The waitress was just plain snarky and rude. Her bad attitude made the experience a little awkward and with so many other bars in the area I can't think of a good reason to go back to this one.

A group of us came here for a friends birthday dinner, we had a reservation for eight, they put us at a table in the center of the restaurant made for six. I HATE THAT. Biggest dining per peeve ever. If I make a reservation, then you know I am coming, at least pretend to be prepared and seat us at a proper table. We waited forever for drinks. I'm a little foggy on how long we waited before our server took our order, but I remember waiting forever for the food. Maybe I am too old for such a "trendy" place, but I felt like it was too dark, too loud, and the service was just okay. The food wasn't terrible but there was nothing about the experience that makes me want to go back. Parking is a pain, the space is way too cramped, and I think they are trying to be more of a "night time hot spot" than they are a restaurant. That may be what some people love about this place, for me, I just wanted dinner and they aren't real stellar providing that.

If it was possible to give zero stars I would. A couple friends and I were at 3 Monkeys last night trying to get a few drinks. It was getting close to last call and we debated staying there, however after the service we received we chose to walk further down Main. The bartender was the least attentive bartender I've ever come across in Richmond. I get that it was slow and it was a Monday night, but you're ALREADY working, why not try to make some money? Every time we ordered a drink, the bartender looked like he wanted to punch us. I'm sorry but that's YOUR JOB. I simply can't understand how/why someone who relies on tips as their main source of income would be so unwelcoming and uninviting to new customers. My friends and I are always looking to add a new bar to our route and sadly 3 Monkeys will not be one of the bars we stop at. It's sad because the bar itself has a lot of potential ($4 Cinnamon Toast shots are legit) but their service is flat out pathetic.

Stopped by for happy hour and had a couple of drinks. The happy hour prices were great but the drinks were just ok. They tasted like they added a lot of simple syrup. I had to ask to have one drink remade as it was so sweet. Also had some appetizers, which were ok.

Love this place for brunch, especially on the porch. Their pork chops chimichurri special is phenomenal, and so is the egg bruschetta with pesto. The mimosas are strong and cheap, and the service is great. The clientele also tends to be significantly quieter and less annoying than at Star-Lite Diner across the street, not to mention the food is better. What's not to love?

Will never go here again. We went with 4 friends and had terrible terrible service. Wrong drinks, then charged us for 4 pitchers (we got 2) and charged the wrong people. We were ignored and had to go and find the server to close out our tabs only to have 20 extra dollars show up on bank statements a few days later. When I called the restaurant, the owner either didn't understand that I was over charged or refused to give me the 20 dollars that I was owed. A slick "come in again and I'll give you a free drink" was offered. No thanks.

We came here after the Color Run around 11am for brunch. The mixed reviews are pretty much spot on. Everything is alright, not fabulous, not terrible. The outdoor seating area was nice, but could be spiffed up a bit. The waitstaff was rather young, and not prompt at all. It took forever to get our food, but then again we'd just run a 5K. As far as food - I had the spinach and feta omelette with only egg whites. Delicious! However, it came with a depressing fruit side (only cantaloupe and melon), and over 3 cups of crispy potatoes. The eggs and goat cheese bruschetta my friend ordered was the ODDEST dish I'd ever seen. It looked like an entire loaf of bread cut into a starfish shape (over 3 inches thick). 90% bread, 10% eggs and cheese. All in all, I wasn't swept off my feet but I'd probably return if invited. If they didn't have outdoor seating I wouldn't go.

Had a good time here! I like the music they play, and the feel of the place. Not sure about the food, bc we only had drinks. However, I used to be a big fan of their pizza. Specifically, their proscuitto, sundried tomato & artichoke pizza. I haven't had it, or any of their food in a while, but it used to be great. I can't imagine that it's changed a whole lot, but I could be wrong. I see that a lot of other fellow Yelpers don't have the best of things to say about their food... Anywho, they have Fireball Friday's, where they serve shots of Fireball for $3. Not a bad deal if you like Fireball. I would definitely come back again, and I'd try some food on the next visit.

Frequent 3 monkeys more than most restaurants. I love the atmosphere and people that work there. The brunch food is awesome you must try the breakfast pizza's and egg bruschetta! Their dinner fair is decent but it is a great place to go to grab a drink, appetizer, and meet people. Overall, fun Place, decent food, never disappoints.

So, went with a work buddy for a late lunch/early happy hour and definitely came away disappointed. She ordered the queso as a starter and what was delivered may well have had cheese in it but it was unrecognizable as queso. We both tasted just a little, wrinkled our faces and sent it back. To their credit they did comp us another app - spinach artichoke dip - which was decent. I got the reuben and was pretty unthrilled. There was more fat and sinew than meat making it very difficult to eat and even more difficult to digest. Plus, there were sweet potato fries. I haven't yet decided if I will give it another shot. That being said, it does seem like a decent place to belly up to the bar and have a beer. But maybe thats all.

I just piged-out at 3 Monkeys! A cute bartender, meatball tapas, the seafood pizza, and a draft beer cured my hungry headache. Wednesdays are my favorite night cause it's peaceful, the crowd is minimal, the music is current and the service is friendly! Thanks Boo!

I have been living in the RIC for 3 years and I have visited just about everywhere yet never reviewed them. Atmosphere: dim lighting which is actually pretty nice because you get the lounge like feeling mixed with a little bar status. Be aware that if you sit at the booths near the bar, you will encounter lots of traffic and bumping of patrons past your table! its not bad until life night really starts picking up. Along the same lines, if you get seated by the bar-get ready for your lovely drinkers to feel the need to interact with you while they stand around chatting with friends (but this can be quite entertaining!). One thing that I do NOT like is having to wash your hands in front of everyone! Their is a his and hers bathroom in the back of the bar, but neither of them have a sink/mirror inside. So you have to come out of the bathroom and wash your hands at the sink that is nestled between the two higher class "porta potty's" LOL -but this is just a pet peeve of mine! Price: Drinks are decently priced ie mojitos etc are around $9 -but the drinks are worth it (depending on the bartender)! I consider myself a very tolerable drinker for a girl and 2 of their drinks had me feeling a little "delayed" Food: haven't tried and more likely I won't! I am funny about food and this place seems like a inexpensive place made for meeting friends and drinking. I know friends who like the food, but Ill pass! All in all: good for mingling with your friends! just ask to be seated away from the bar or outside!

My review is for the BRUNCH experience only. Atmosphere: Try to stay out in the patio-ish area where it's full of windows and sunlight. That will just brighten up your day (literally) instead of the dark wooded seclusion of the bar area. Also the music isn't as loud out there so you can actually carry on a conversation with your friends. Price: Such a deal! You get a full load of food for most dishes under $10. That's impressive for my wallet as well as my tummy. Food: All my companions' dishes always look delish. I will come back time and time again for ONE specific dish that blows my mind. The beef tenderloin benedict leaves me speechless (mainly because I'm stuffing my face with no time to talk.) Meat and poached eggs cooked to perfection. Why use a boring English muffin when you can serve a potato pancake drizzled with a "you know it's not healthy but ooooh so good" Hollandaise sauce. Side of asparagus? Okay! Other shout outs to amazing dishes: French Toast Monkey Cristo (a well worth it heart attack on a plate), Bagel with Lox (I feel so Jewish eating this, but they knock it outta the park!) and the Tri Pork Omelette (three types of pork...'nough said.) Go to 3 Monkeys! Or don't go....so that I can keep this place all to myself. :-P Just kidding, see ya there.

Decently priced, decent food, decent service, decent atmosphere... This is pretty much a stereotypical American restaurant/diner and for better or worse it is exactly that.

I'll concede that it might not be entirely fair to judge a restaurant's food solely by it's salads, but 1) you gotta work hard to screw up a salad; 2) I tried several so I've got a good sampling to go on. We ordered the chicken Asian, steak with cranberries and blue cheese, and fried oysters and bacon over spinach. How can you go wrong with fried oysters and bacon? But they did. I was also really excited about the spicy ginger chile dressing--way too sweet with a weird aftertaste. Basically all 3 options fell flat--meh. Perhaps their cooked dishes are more successful? Service was slow and there was no one in there when we stopped by on a lazy Sunday. Positive note: cocktails were pretty good and we tried a few of those as well. Chocolate monkey was very tasty, mojitoes were good--good selection of flavors--spicy bloody Marys.

There is nothing about 3 Monkeys that strikes one as being different enough or good enough to give it 4 stars. Owners Katrina & Johnny Giovas ( Sidewalk Cafe, Stella's, Kuba Kuba, and Kitchen 64) and George Tsipas ( Paul's Deli in Williamsburg,VA) have put together another restaurant that is......well.....a lot like all their other restaurants. The big problem with many establishments in this area of the fan, especially those on the "Robinson/Main Walk of Shame" tend to be way better bars then they are restaurants. I think 3 Monkeys is a place where people go to grease the gun whales before a heavy night of drinking or use that food to sop up what they have already drank. Serious diners won't go to 3 Monkeys are really any of the other places mentioned as they are all just different takes on the same type of bar food with a twist that gets tiresome after a while. Don't get me wrong, you will be blown away by portion size and I would venture to say that almost anything you get will be decent. I guess I am just getting tired of the same old formula. 3 Monkeys serves brunch from 9:30am-2:30 pm on Sat and Sun. This can be said for many other "restaurants" along this familiar strip and it is just the way it has pretty much always been. The list reads the same deLux(better than the rest), Sticky Rice (Asian fusion so a little bit of a different twist but more of a bar still), FW Sullivans, 3 Monkeys, Starlite, Metro Grill, Racine and Buddy's. All of which have potential to be great restaurants but the allure of the highly profitable bar business will always win out. If you want bar food to go with your drinking then 3 Monkeys is fine. If you are looking for a special occasion or a cut about the rest, you can do better elsewhere.

I sat at the bar on Saturday, April 13, 2014. I had the opportunity to meet your bartender, Hannah. She was by far the most attentive and talkative bartender I have ever met. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed her company. I don't think there's a better bartender in the Richmond area.

This place isn't bad at all. It's also nothing stellar, but it's fairly priced, has nice patio seating, and the goat cheese appetizer is pretty delicious. The Monkey Burger was pretty good, but the bacon came soggy, and it was a little dry. Judging by other reviews, it must be better on weeknights, because our service for a table of 6 was pretty prompt.

  • Jenny B.

Food wise, there is really nothing special here. The food is meh, the service is meh and it tastes just like their other restaurants (Star Lite, Gibson, Kitchen 64). Needless to say, it's best for being a drinking spot and that's it.

I love the fan and the small neighborhood feel of this place. This is my new favorite spot for brunch! The atmosphere is comfortable, the food is original and very good, the drinks are delicious and the staff is friendly and inviting. Last Sunday, I had the flank steak benedict. I thought it was original, very tender, and had just the right amount of spice! The bartender (who served us) suggested a strawberry pancake shot. Now, I don't usually do "shots", but it sounded interesting so I gave it a shot (haha...get it?) .....it (they) were soooooo good! I enjoyed my visit to 3 Monkeys and strongly recommend!

I stopped here with my BF on our way through Richmond. The place had just opened so it was empty except for one other table. The waitress was very nice and gave me good info on the pizza (they don't have sauce). I ordered the chicken pesto sandwich, pasta salad, and a sweet tea, and the BF ordered the crab cake sliders and a beer. The chicken in my sandwich was extremely overdone and everything else was just okay. I can't say I'd be back for another meal but can see it being a fun place to grab a few beers on a Friday or Saturday night.

First, you cannot see a thing in there, even the menu. The pizza crust is okay, but the cheese is horrible. I think it is the quality, but it is loaded on to make up for lack of taste. I don't know why restaurants think that more of something bad will make it better! The fries were good, and they were nice to put everything on the side. My husband liked the crab cake sliders, but the sausage and cheese on the pizza were both so poor in quality I could not eat any of it. The salad had more croutons than lettuce, and was swimming in dressing. Again, another case of loading crap on something to cover the actual taste. I think they are probably good for just bar grub, but don't expect any quality ingredients or sophisticated fare here.

Brunch The Bloody Monkey was weak but tasty, however the breakfast pizza was great! My brunch date ended up helping me eat it. (her omelet wasn't as good I guess) I'd def come back for brunch but wouldn't expect any spectacular dish. Young crowd, friendly staff, good times!

Our quick visit to Richmond started here to meet a friend who literally lives caddy corner to 3 Monkeys. We sat on the patio, which was good for people watching (and a nice view of 3 TVs), but I wish the windows opened more. It was a little stuffy. Good selection of beers on tap and they serve brunch until 3pm. I had the Monkey Cristo, which was a combo of a french toast and a Monte Cristo sandwich. It came with a side of crispy potatoes and syrup for dipping. The sandwich was inventive - who doesn't love brie, prosciutto and turkey on french toast? But it was a tad bland. The potatoes were really good though. Buffalo wings are standard bar fare, but nicely sauced. The burgers were declared decent.

I'm more of a club lover, so I didn't really like sitting in the booths waiting for service. It does get busy and crowded which makes it easy to meet people, but the space to walk around isn't very big....one night a friend and I just stopped for a drink and apetizer then went downtown which I enjoyed. I feel like this place is a good place to "pregame" then go on to something better.

Worst place in Richmond!!! We waited forever for the terrible food. We couldn't even stomach everything. We heard other tables also complaining about the slow service. The place smelled terribly. Not worth the time.

Came on a Friday night. Busy place with a college crowd. Alt rock on the sound system. Pros: busy place, fun to people watch walkers from the patio, waitress didn't charge us for the sodas which she said were "off", did notice they tasted too sweet. Drink specials were cheap. 2 drafts, 1 bottle, fries, and 2 sodas that were comped came out to 12 bucks. M'eh: fries were just ok Cons: smokers, college scene +/-

I haven't been to 3 Monkeys in a few months and I truly do enjoy their food but just not all of it. Three of us went here on a Saturday around 2:30 for lunch and sat on the patio...the servers and host were extremely friendly...the bartender took a litle while for her to get to us because she was engrossed in a conversation with someone else at the bar... I ordered their version of a grilled cheese on rye bread with three cheese, tomatoes, and bacon...really sinful...but oh so good. Along with the sandwich came a side of fries which I really wished I hadn't ordered because their was about a pound of huge chunks of salt all over them. I'm sure some people want to die of a heart attack, but not me. Next time, I'll remember to order the onion straws because I've had them before and they be tasty! One of the other diners I was with ordered the Monkey burger which has traditionally been really good but was slightly over done and thus dry...either way, he ate the burger and we all went our happy way. Overall, this visit was a three star visit but other than a few other mishaps, i.e. having to wait for ketchup and mayo for like 5 minutes after we got our food...that was realllll obnoxious. Anyways, take care and savor it up!

Monkey fries (Please don't give me a heart attack)!!! Came for a happy hour drink and what can be said other than $2 dollar domestic bottles from 4pm to 7pm. That's almost as cheap as staying home. Since staying home and drinking by yourself is the mark of an alcoholic, I rather pay a little more and absolve myself of the feeling that I drink too much. Then you order some monkey fries, fries swimming in melted cheese and bacon and you just stop thinking all together! A truely delicious but greasy affair. Need to try there menu a little more before I can say if it's good or not but the fries were a good start. The service was attentive and friendly. I had a tab going at the bar but the waitresses were still willing to bring me a drink at the table we were at and charge it to my tab. Not really that big of a deal but I appreciated the effort.

This is a fun, affordable place to grab a filling meal. Nothing stood out as bad, and nothing stood out as being amazing. They have a cheap wine list, and the food is all pretty decent. I had a half 3-Mushroom Pizza, half Chicken/Bacon/Red Onion Pizza. Hoping when they advertise three mushrooms that it would involve something delicious like morels or porcini, I was sorely disappointed to see three different sizes of button mushrooms. Unfortunately, the chicken was a little dry too. However the mozzarella was good quality, and the sauce and crust were good. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to the thicker Richmond-style crusts, but this one was fluffy and filling. I also threw back a glass of the house pinot noir, which was a decent pour for only $6. My friend had a veggie pizza and was very pleased with hers. Our salad was fine, but nothing spectacular. I like the atmosphere of the restaurant, especially the enclosed porch. It's great for people watching and the service is nice and relaxed. However I'm not sure I'll be going back on a regular basis for mediocre, when the other restaurants around town have been surprisingly great.

Why/When I tried it My brother graduated from VCU on Dec 9 and we stopped in here after the ceremony for a congratulatory brunch. Location/accessibility I don't really know a lot about Richmond so I can't really comment. My brother said he comes to 3 Monkeys sometimes for the nightlife, so I figure it can't be too far out of the way. There was plenty of street parking and apparently there is also a lot behind the restaurant. Not bad. Atmosphere Having been in college not long ago myself, I can tell when a nocturnal, crowded, dive bar tries to impersonate a trendy, hipster cafe during the day--welcome to 3 Monkeys. Menu/pricing The menu was standard brunch food at a pretty decent price. Our dad picked up the check, so that helped defray our costs :-) Food I tried the ham, asparagus, and brie omelette. It was a great combination. Service Service was fine. Grading The food and atmosphere were good, not great. Altogether they made for an OK dining experience. If I go back to Richmond, I'm not exactly making a bee line for 3 Monkeys.

Came here for a much-needed post-work happy hour with my coworkers...it was pretty cheap I think, for a giant plate of Monkey Fries and a vodka soda, my bill only came out to about $8. Can't really write a comprehensive review of the food since that was all I had, but the Monkey Fries (while addicting) had way too much congealed cheese on it for me to ever consider ordering it again. However, I wouldn't mind coming back here on other occasions. Our waitress was very sweet and more than accommodating, which was nice.

A couple of things about this place I really like: 1) Affordable 2)Great portion size and interesting specials. Today at lunch I had "beef tenderloin sliders with homemade chipolte BBQ sauce, and french fries." The sliders were pretty much full size hamburger rolls, each with thin slices of nicely cooked tenderloin beef, cheese, grilled onions, tomato, lettuce and a plateful of french fries. Downside is I almost fell asleep at my desk this afternoon. Probably not a great place for a business lunch, but a great place to get an affordable bite with friends and enjoy a few beers. 3)When the weather gets nice they open the windows on the patio for an open air feel. 4) Good location as a stop on a Robinson Street Crawl, close to (but more casual than) Carytown, and a couple blocks to VMFA
