If I could give this place ZERO STARS I would. This place was absolutely terrible I can't believe we wasted our money here. We walk in and it's completely dead but the bartender seemed to be on a 20 min smoke break or something. We ordered a flight of IPAs which were all warm not even cool. Like the beer was sitting in the tap tubes and they gave that to us. The wait staff was all gathered around the end of the bar sharing Facebook pictures and mingling with theirselves and there was NO customer interaction. Where is the hospitality? 40 mins later our food came out... 40 mins to make 2 burgers?? Cooks must've been on a smoke break... We ordered the Old Towne burgers. I asked for medium and it came out bloody and red. I had her send it back and in my stupidity I expected them to deliver a fresh burger and not one I had cut in half to check and fresh fries. Absolutely not the case. The same severed burger and same fries came back but lucky me they sat my cutting board of fries under the heat lamp........ Yum.... The only thing that was good there was their jalapeño honey aioli sauce.... Sorry Gosport we won't be returning.... What a WASTE!!!!

Food is decent. Good if you're careful. Appreciate that the menu is adventurous. The chicken pot pie is bland, bbq meh, house pickles not that great. Truffle fries are good. Last time we visited we had slow service. Sever gave us a bit of attitude when we mentioned how slow she was. I guess she was overworked - bussing tables, sitting tables, and serving people. She claimed the place was busy but we didn't see it. Could have used some management, organization, and more equal distribution of duties. We were one of a handful of tables complaining about the wait time. Needless to say the truffle fries aren't enough to get us to come back. Cross Gosport off the list of Olde town restaurants to dine at.

Located in the Old Towne area of Portsmouth, Gosport Tavern (GT) is my new favorite spot when I want a burger and/or a beer in Portsmouth. I've visited twice now--once solo and once with my boys. I love the pub-feel of GT, and it makes me warm and cozy. In fact, it makes me want to drink lots of delicious beer. That's a good thing since GT has an amazing list of great beer! I often try to research a bit about a business when I am writing a review, and when I read about GT, I found it interesting. Brad Stewart, the original owner of GT and a Navy retiree, decided to give homage to the military and shipbuilding history that was and is a big part of Portsmouth. Back in 1767, the Gosport Shipyard was founded, but later changed it to Norfolk Naval Shipyard. When GT closed back in 2011, the new owners took over in 2012 and decided to stick with the name--I'm glad because Gosport Tavern is a pretty cool name. Turning back to the present, the service both times at GT was decent, although definitely more friendly my first visit. The one thing I will give them is that my water glass was always full--big thumbs up from me. Both times I ordered The Olde Towne, which is 8 oz of house ground beef, chuck and short rib on a pretzel roll. They never offered to add cheese, but I'm sure they would if you asked. Their burgers are wonderful with that flame grilled taste, and that homemade pickle on the side is a great compliment. Instead of fries, they serve their fresh homemade fried chips; I love that they're different as I get tired of French fries. Their burgers and sandwiches arrive on your table on a cutting board, and I find it unique and fun. Last point about the food: my oldest son loves his burgers, and he told me that GT's burgers are the best he's ever had. So, there you go. I did want to mention about the beer... I ordered a Young's Double Chocolate Stout, but when it was brought to my table, a tear slid down my face. A can? Say what? He could have told me when I ordered it instead of the major disappointment I felt when I saw that aluminum can. I admit--I am a draught snob, but it tasted okay once it was poured into one their wicked cool glasses. However, when I saw the price on my bill, I choked and one of my boys needed to pound on my back. $7.50 for a can of beer is outrageous. Next time I will make sure to ask if it's on tap or not. Overall, I like GT, and I will definitely check out more of their menu items--especially their beer. I wish they had parking, but I haven't had a problem finding a spot on a side street. It is Old Towne, after all, with no strip malls or parking lots--part of its charm. If you haven't tried Old Towne or GT yet, I suggest you give them a shot. It might not be Ghent, but I still love it.

I've been here too many times to count. It ends up costing me more because of the downtown tunnel which I'm too lazy to avoid. Yelp helped me find this place which I'm grateful for. Great drinks, inviting atmosphere. Sometimes the waitresses aren't up to par, but it's a small price to pay. Prime rib? Delicious. Fried chicken? Wonderful. Burgers? Holy smokes. Dessert? Yowza! You just can't go wrong here. Stop going to the beach and getting mediocre food. This is the place to be.

Went for a late at the last minute dinner. I was searching for a good place for some fish & chips and I was a little disappointed with our meal. Fish had way too much batter which caused a lot of it to not get fried all the way. My wife didn't like the "beer taste" but that wasn't noticeable to me. I didn't care too much for what they called "chips" regular french fries and half of them were burnt. Tarter sauce that came with it had no taste as well. I did give them 4 stars because I love the look of the place and I have picked out several other dishes that I want to try next visit. Also the service was very good and the beer/wine selection is good as well. So yes I will give them another try. The mac & cheese looks amazing along with the burgers that I got a look at from others.

When here for our last second anniversary dinner. It was good, trivia nights on Mondays for those interested. We got a order of parmesan fries to start. We also got a cardiac burger which was pretty tasty as well. We had one of the crab cakes broiled and the other fried, preferred the boiled to be honest. Finally we had the spinach salad with salmon with was okay. The mac and cheese wasn't that great, really getting tired of every place swearing that theirs is to die for. This is a 4.5 star place, but I knocked it down for the slow service (slow all night and they forgot our beer order), the salad, and mac and cheese. I'd come back, its still really good food for the most part.
(4)Veronika R.
6-stars! ...If only I could. Venue is charming. Waitstaff are very friendly and attentive. Last time I was here for dinner I had the Spinach Salad and added an 8oz ribeye. YES! You can add a ribeye to your salad! Perfection! This place consistently puts out AMAZING food. The kitchen knows what they are doing and pays a lot of attention to the details in their dishes. Quality comes first. This is probably my favorite place to grab dinner in Portsmouth. I've never had a sub-par experience with the wait-staff here. Ask them questions, they will help you... it can be difficult to make up your mind with so many delicious choices and such an impressive collection of draft beers!
(5)Matthew R.
Good selection of beer. And steak was incredible! The help was very nice. And kept the glass full all evening.

This has become one of my favorite spots in Portsmouth and I wish I could take it home with me. If I ever move down to the area I will be a regular here as the food and decor is just astounding. On my first visit I had the Level 3 Coronary Burger which was basically a challenge. I don't do a lot of challenges because I have some respect for myself but then again sometimes you just gotta show everyone who daddy is. Turns out this burger is daddy. I feel most 'challenges' are just ways to draw in customers and media and the food in the challenge isn't particularly good, but Gosport showed me that simply isn't true. This freakishly massive burger, which fried chicken, short-rib, braised pork, bacon, egg, mozz sticks, and grilled cheeses for buns was astoundingly delicious. I hate how good it is because it's just so awful for you. I finished the burger but looked at the fries and said, "fuck it." Came here for brunch another time and had the Chicken Fried Steak. I love me some chicken fried steak and bonus points if they use a cut of steak that's respectable. Gosport uses a NY strip and the fat content on it was perfect. You feel like you're actually eating a steak instead of a piece of just fried mystery beef. The sausage gravy on it was thick and delicious. Great bar food.
(5)Morgan M.
I love this place! Food is on point. I always get the same meal - the Smithy which is 3 pulled pork sliders with sweet chili sauce. Need I say more? Instead of fries they serve seasoned chips made in house. Delicious! I've tried several different soups and they have all been superb. My husband always gets something different and he has yet to be disappointed.
(5)Luke C.
Not only does this place offer outstanding food and beverages, but they have exceptional service. This was one of my least favorite places in Old Town before the re-opening and is now one of my favorite! Despite wanting to eat the same delicious meal I had previously I force myself to try something different each time, and I've never been disappointed! Bar staff is friendly, knowledgeable, creative, and efficient. You will not walk out of here with a small tab, but you won't care!!!

I have loved this placed and dragged so many friends and family here, that it really hurts for me to turn on it. The food is great...when it is warm and served in a reasonable time. I drag a group of my work colleagues here once a month for a "Gosport Get Together". I call ahead and let them know I will have 10-12 people coming, and I make sure everyone is polite and patient and the server gets a generous tip. I have brought my son here several times with his Dad or as a treat with his babysitter, and they have enjoyed it, and it has felt like a neighborhood tavern and grill. We have had a couple experiences where it has been busy and understaffed- ok more than a couple... Enough so that if we walk in and see a large group, then we walk right out. Tonight my 4 year old wanted the Mac and cheese and the hot dog- both of which are great when they are warm. There were two large groups and I knew we should have just left, but I feel like this is my neighborhood restaurant so we should just be patient. My 4 year old was so patient playing with his toys for the one hour and 10 minutes it took to get our food. I have to say, with a couple big groups in the restaurant I knew we were going to wait, so I wasn't worried. The food came, most of it, and it was cold. I ordered the steak. The potatoes were cold and the steak had a pat of solid butter on it that was not even close to melting. The hot dog did not come with the Mac and cheese, which was congealed into a solid mass, but, really, does a 4 year old care? No. So he ate it like eating a Popsicle off a fork I had to steal off another table because we didn't ever get silverware or napkins. The hot dog came out 12 minutes later, and that's when the tantrum started, and for that I feel very ashamed and have to apologize. The hot dog was wrinkled and shriveled and the bun was too hard to bite into, and he was so upset. He did get a time out- I am not excusing his behavior at all. But I couldn't eat my cold steak and potatoes even at the $20 price. I gave the server my card. 20 minutes later she brought boxes. And this is where I draw the line. I told her that I understood she was busy, but the food was cold and we couldn't eat it and we just wanted to pay and leave and she said ok and dropped the check, turned her back and left. It is clear the management of Gosport Tavern do not support their waitstaff. They clearly do not need my business, and so I will be taking my family's business and my monthly get together elsewhere. I am glad that Gosport Tavern is doing so well now.

The Sweet Chili Pork sliders were outstanding! Large selection of beers and a great environment. Highly recommend!
(5)Jon L.
A very nice late nite meal place. You can sit outside if you like. I had the double turkey sandwich which was quite good.
(3)Sassy W.
My favorite place to eat in Portsmouth, and me and my coworkers eat here at least once a week when we're in the area. Only have been here for dinner. I haven't gotten through whole menu yet. Favs: (home of the best tater tots I think) goat cheese & herb tater tots, buffalo & thai chilli grilled wings (ask for extra thai chilli sauce. sometimes they skimp), spinach salad, broiled crab cake, mac & cheese, fried chicken (not on the bone), senorita cocktail

I must say, I was utterly blown away by the new Gosport Tavern after eating there with friends and family. Having never been to the original, I have nothing to compare it to, but the fact that I come back again and again is a testament in itself, I believe. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming with beautiful decor and cozy lighting. There is a large bar where I have found myself grabbing a meal and a drink after a day at work. The drink selection is extensive, with many a creative cocktail on the menu as well which I have yet to try. I normally end up having a glass of red wine; my favorite is their $5 Santa Julia organic cabernet. Very satisfying on the palate, and what a great price. The food here is exceptional in every aspect. I can't emphasize enough how dissapointing it is to get an entree served at room temperature, when it is supposed to be nice and hot. That is no problem here; the food arrives fresh from the kitchen, and sometimes I even have to let it cool down before digging in - not a bad problem to have. They just changed their menu a few weeks back to a more fall-like menu, and it rocks. The butternut squash soup is some of the tastiest, hearty winter soup I've ever had the pleasure to enjoy. Not to heavy, not to light, with a perfect blend of spices (and molasses!). Their house-made chips are wonderful as well - crispy, not oily, and seasoned just right. I could eat those every day of my life and consider it a life well lived. My lastest entree was the suryano wrapped salmon with sweet and sour bing cherry sauce. WOW! Who would have thought to put those ingredients together!? It works so well, though, that I think I'll try to recreate it myself at home, though I'm not expecting it to be as good. The savory pairing of bacon with the sweet/sour cherries complement one another without being overbearing. A highly recommended dish. I'm probably getting that again tonight when I go with friends, but then again I feel like I should branch out. At least one thing is for certain, the kitchen never fails to impress with both creativity and taste. Dishes to try: meatloaf fish and chips suryano wrapped salmon beer-b-q shrimp and grits (yes, it's as good as it sounds) So give Gosport Tavern a try. You won't regret it AT ALL. Great job guys, and thanks for keeping Olde Towne wonderfully scrumptions!

This place is on point. No words. The fried green tomatoes are the best I've ever had in my life. I will let it be a surprise, but the flavors were perfect together and it was a unique spin on a southern staple. We had the chicken noodle soup which was impressive and flavorful, truffle fries which are always fun, mac & cheese was delicious and again unique approach to a southern staple. My father had the fried chicken and gravy which was tasty and the presentation was beautiful. For dessert we did the creme brûlée cobbler and it was perfect. Five stars and will definitely be bringing my snooty foodie friends to check out this secret of Portsmouth.
(5)Thomas P.
Great food, awesome beer selection, amazing custom mixed drinks, natural ingredients, never had a bad meal or service here, classy and clean but not expensive
(4)Greg W.
Try the Ace Pineapple Cider. It was YUMMO!! The Fried Gosport Pickles are really good, not your run-of-the-mill fried pickles.
(4)E W.
There were only two waiters in the entire place. The blood marys our table ordered had no alcohol. The fried pickles were soggy. The "scrambled" eggs looked microwaved. My "drunken sailor" Ruben was extremely greasy and over-salted. We had to get up and get our own utensils, had to seek out the waitress for refills, and all our meals came out at different times. This was hands down the worst dining experience of 2015! We got comped nothing and the waitress didn't even apologize. Btw, we all have worked in the industry, so tend to be very understanding; however, this experience was awful!
(1)Jon T.
Watch out for the chocolate truffle balls they will get you. Richer than Richie tell the bitches come and get me.
(4)Sandra B.
The fried pickles started the meal off well and were delicious, which wetted our pallet. When the entrees arrived however we were both extremely disappointed. The pulled pork, while flavorful, was dry as a bone and did not come with any BBQ sauce. The burger was also dry and unevenly cooked- again no sauce at all, and the fries didn't come with ketchup either. If it sounds like everything was dry it was, which further included the hush puppies who were glaringly lacking any honey butter. Some sauce must have offended the chef at some point in life because they seem to have sworn never to use them. It also took almost 40 min to get our food with only two other tables. Take this review with a gain of salt, maybe it's the dice you roll on the cooking staff, just go in prepared, and maybe get drunk first- you'll have the time and then everything will taste great.
(2)Kat J.
Stopped in during the Portsmouth pub crawl. Although I'm sure the servers were sick of the wandering patrons, they were very polite and answered all of our questions. We enjoyed both the fried green tomatoes and the fried pickles. Definitely coming back for more!
(4)Maxine B.
We were very disappointed after this place came recommended to us!! We were the only people eating and it took 20 minutes to get our soup! I ordered chicken dumpling and the dumplings were raw dough! 4 of the items I tried to order were unavailable. My husband's burger was burnt to a crisp. The spinach side I ordered was drowned in butter and I had to drain it out to eat it! (And I'm a butter fan!). The lettuce on my crab cake sandwich and my husbands burger was the inside of the lettuce head: hard chunks, not leaves! Was the chef we had new, or why does this place have good ratings? All together, the food and service was a huge disappointment. We spent $80 and left hungry. :(

My fiancé and I went to eat dinner here last night. We walked in and the bartender made us aware that we would be seated in a few minutes. Understandably on a Friday night they were busy. However, being a "tavern" I would imagine that they are aware there business would be busier on a Friday night and would staff accordingly. We were eventually seated on a small table between two other parties, one larger one of two people in a four person table. My fiancé approached the employee who seated us (he had quickly ran off) if there was another table we could possibly sit at. The employee replied with significant attitude no and what would we like him to do about it. My fiancé pointed out the many empty chairs and tables in the middle of the room. The employee rudely told him they were reserved. So we sat down and began reading our menus. A waitress passes by. Five more minutes and waitresses and employees are continuing to pass by us. No one asked for our drink order no one came by to tell us our waitress/ waiter would be there shortly. We waited for some time and were never helped. We eventually walked out and will never go back due to how poorly we were treated.

This place is climbing itself out of the hole the previous owners dug for the name Gosport Tavern. If you haven't been in a while (like within 2013) you have to try this place out. The (Chesapeake) is a Crab Cake sandwich on a pretzel roll that is amazing. The Fish and Chips will leave you so full you will want to skip your next meal. Don't even get me started on the drinks, they have it and they know what they're talking about. Do your taste buds and stomach a favor and head down to Gosport Tavern for Lunch or Dinner.
(5)Unknown K.
I still like the beer selection - in fact it's gotten even better - and the food is generally solid, but the new batch of employees needs to step it up. If you get some of the staff from earlier, they are just the right attentive and know their stuff. The last few times I've gone, the new staff has either been too interested in talking to a friend/potential lover to pay attention to their job or hasn't been somewhat ignorant of the menu and beers. If you work in a beer bar, you should at least know what you are selling it seems. Hopefully the management will either offer better training or stop hiring people based on a certain physical attribute
(3)Alexandra M.
This place is a great addition to Old Towne! The crab cake lunch special is spectacular. Life-changing. A religious experience. I had the crab cakes broiled. The best part about them is that they're actual CRAB, not so much filler. Also, the side of macaroni and cheese. Uhhhhnnn. Real. I'm not even going to try with words. The beer selection is great, although word to the wise -- I find the taps to be always warmer than I think beer should be served, regardless of the style. It's very odd. I get cans and bottles now, and I'm very happy with those! Also, cheers to Gosport for staying open seven days a week. So many places around here are closed on Sundays or Mondays . Why the cold shoulder to the early week??
(5)Marlon T.
I came here on a pub crawl Sunday. We started at the Bier Garden, went to Gosport Tavern, then ended the night at Still. Since Bier Garden is serious business, I had already been decently inebriated by the time we arrived at Gosport. I had 2 more beers, some fried calamari, and had some intense conversation with friends. I happened to run into one of my other friend who bought me some tasty french fries. The fries were damn good and if I wasn't already full from all the sausages I had at the Bier Garden, I would've ordered a main entree here--I'm sure it would've been awesome-tasting. I think this place hasn't been open for that long since there aren't that many reviews on Yelp and given its goodness, I'm sure that review amount will increase at a fast rate. Gosport definitely should be on anyone's downtown Portsmouth pub crawl list.
(4)Valerie M.
Friday night dinner out in downtown Portsmouth led us to this location. Here we had great service and enjoyed excellent food. portions were decent in size. We thoroughly enjoyed it all!
(4)Jason S.
Went in expecting just your average run of the mill bar in Portsmouth...wrong. The Gosport Tavern is anything but average. The interior is very well maintained and makes you feel as though you are in an old school tavern in a seaport. The bar is rather large and well appointed with more bourbon and whiskey than the average bar and multiple rows of beer on tap (both local and out of area selections). But the food...man, out of this world. Homemade pickles, sauces from scratch and that's just the start. The burgers are huge and cooked to your taste (none of this "we can only cook it to med well or black for your safety"). The portion sizes are huge, so be if you start to order apps, then a salad and dinner expect to take some home. The wait staff and bartenders are well spoken, courteous and very attentive. Even though I don't live in Portsmouth I plan on heading back to the Gosport Tavern in the very near future...and I recommend you do as well!
(5)Johnny B.
Went here for lunch after the children's museum one weekend. Evidently, they were only service Brunch that day. I'm glad too! KILLER dill bloody mary. My wife's omelet was amazing. There are some lunchier items on the brunch menu. I had the Effingham. Shaved Virginia ham, granny smith apples, brie and ale mustard on a baguette. Illy mo-mo!
(5)Juanita S.
The chef if is outstanding!

If you're Black, stay back! Don't waste your time. When we arrived (appropriately dressed) for our 830 reservation, the place was fairly empty. Yet, we stood there for several mins waiting to be seated, but were never approached or even acknowledged. At least 3 different members of the staff (bartender included) kept looking at us, yet no one moved or said a word. So after 5 mins, we left. When we called back to explain why we left, Lisa apologized and said that she saw us come in and thought the server was setting up our table. Yeah ok right. Why would you need to set up a table when there are several empty tables already set up? Also, why weren't we at least greeted/acknowledged during our 5 minute wait by any one of the 3 staff members who clearly saw us standing at the door waiting to be seated? Either way, won't be back. GF insists on giving them 1 star because Erin's telephone etiquette was above average when we called to make the reservation.

I searched YELP for Taverns in the area and Gosport came up. Reviews were good so we tried it. We were not disappointed. Fried green tomatoes were excellent as were the drinks, beer, burgers and fried fish. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. We would go back if visiting that area again!
(5)Angela C.
I never went to the Gosport Tavern before it closed, but I am glad I went when it reopened! It's a great place like you'd find in Norfolk, where they serve great and local craft beers, extensive wine list, and other spirits to choose from, as well as great food. The owners know what works, and the Tavern is a great place to meet for drinks at their fabulously crafted bar, or for dinner with friends. I had the fried oyster dinner, which was delicious. My husband had the meatloaf which he also enjoyed. We shared an appetizer of calamari and fried green tomatoes with friends, which were both great. Great range of prices and meals, and service was wonderful, and knowledgeable about their beverages and food. Go and see for yourself!
(5)Amy M.
Ribeye w/ blu cheese is amazing. Casual atmosphere with friendly and efficient staff. Never knew the clams in a sausage broth could be out of this world.
(4)Norrell A.
Awesome brunch... I had the green eggs and ham...he had the hangover. Both hit the spot! Try the peach bellini...sure to make your Sunday even better!!
(4)Bazil G.
Another wanna be gastropub. They must have learned about the concept from a reality TV show as the staff nor the owner seem to have a clue what quality is. Serving up bland food (deep fried food is cuisine!) pulverized with sugar and fat, the refuge of the talentless cook, and trying to pass it off as cuisine. The staff sitting at the bar (all highly overweight as they must consume their own food) outnumbered the customers when I was there. They were all drinking beer and hanging out, while my food arrived cold, I guess staff bonding takes precedence over serving the customer quality food. Avoid at all cost.
(1)B.D. A.
Shaved Virginia ham with Granny Smith apples and Brie on a baguette makes for a perfect Sunday brunch sandwich! The atmosphere is ole Portsmouth historical and the staff is great. Don't miss it. Six blocks from the water and worth it. Lots of interesting adult beverages.
(4)Haley G.
service was great, the food and drinks were even better!
(5)Jeremy M.
Awesome place for lunch. Salmon BLT is absolutely flawless!
(5)Scott G.
So far, this place is incredible! Excellent beer selection and the service is incredible! The food is great. The waiter was incredibly courteous and kind. The atmosphere is nice and quiet, makes you feel like you're at home. There are no "undesirables" here, which is rare for this side of Portsmouth. We will definitely be back!
(5)Cindy E.
They make their own pickles. We learned that when we ordered the fried pickles, which I think were pretty good. They were huge, though. And so was the portion. All of the portions were. That's a plus. So it was a nice lunch. I had fish and chips. He had a half turkey and provolone wrap (that was really huge), and a bowl of chicken tortilla soup, which had too many beans in it for my liking. They have a lot of beers, with a lot of cool names, if that's something you're into. But the beer taps are partially covering the TV. And that's a bit ridic. Otherwise, grade A place.
(4)Tricia W.
This place was too good not to go back! Went here for lunch and ordered the spinach salad. The menu said you could add chicken and you know what I thought of their chicken from my earlier review. The server said it is grilled, not fried. BOO HOO. I said then forget the chicken. My husband asked if the chef would do it fried anyway. He said YES. YEAH. This salad was awesome. Candied walnuts, spinach, bacon, goat cheese and the amazing fried chicken. This salad was huge and they didn't skimp on any of the toppings. Try this and you won't be disappointed. My husband got the burger with blue cheese and chips. Burger had great flavor and the chips were good. Another solid performance by the Gosport team! Go here fast and give this place a try.
(5)Vern T.
Pros - Tasty Burger, great salad, super fried green tomatoes and friendly waitress. Cons - long wait for lunch and a $12 pint of beer. It was some kind of triple IPA that the waitress pointed me to. I've never asked how much a pint of beer was in the past. I always assume 5 or 6 bucks. I'm glad I stopped at one this afternoon. Unsure if I'll return.
(3)Tom R.
Been to Still, Eclectic Tapas and Bardo (same owners). Expected more. Bar service was reviewed as slow. It was. Food service was reviewed as slow. It was. Signature crab cakes were dry and pasty. Cheese grits were like concrete. Jalapeño hush puppies were bland cornmeal with no corn and no jalapeños. Never go back!
(1)Joshua T.
My wife and I have been doing Monday trivia night here for about a year. Sorry to say, but we decided to go to Public House for Tuesday trivia because the food and service has gotten pretty bad in the last few months. Our usual waiter Jamie is now always bar tending. The new girls are very slow to take your order. They forget you asked for ketchup or hot sauce. The cooks must have changed a few months ago too because our usual favorite aren't as good. Medium burgers come out burnt, truffle fries barely have any parmesan cheese and truffle oil is lacking, and fried pork chop is way too salty. The place has lost its edge...

Without a doubt one of my favorite spots since moving to VA! They have really fun specials throughout the week (Trivia, penny pint, and rib eye meals for around $15). The food is excellent, I'm a huge fan of their burgers and Mac n cheese- but what really sets Gosport apart from the rest is its AMAZING staff; servers and bartenders are knowledgable, personable, and thorough. Last but not least - the restaurant is SO CLEAN. That's really just the cherry on top

I can't say enough about this place! The food, the beer, the atmosphere, the location....all above standard for a pub/tavern. I come for lunch or dinner. I recently came for my Birthday with about 20 people and they exceeded my expectations! A must if you are in Portsmouth, VA!

Our food was amazing. The beginning experience started with our server John. He was fun and informed about the menu and the drinks. We needed some extra time to order and he was so patient. Bathe food was superb and fresh . We order mozzarella sticks that were fresh and light and homemade!!! Soooo good! Then we the French dip was proportioned juicy and the bun was relabel French roll. We ordered the crab cake sandwich which was superb because of the pretzel roll!!! My husband the buttermilk fried chicken . It came with a cheddar biscuit and gravy and amazing spin on the crazy homade spiral Mac and cheese . Lastly, my son ordered the spinach salad with goat cheese with added chicken. The vine grate dressing always homade and delicious!! We had the triple layer chocolate cake gauche! It was awesome ! To top it off Lauren got an extra box for our goodie cake and we were off! The food is not only supreme but the customer experience is extravagant!!!

Delicious food and great beverages! I do wish that it didn't take so long to get your food but I appreciate the quality and the love in it.

I come here often for a quick lunch during work. Normally the service is pretty slow, but today lunch came out faster then usual. I LOVE their fried chicken with gravy. I get it every time and I am never disappointed. I will say that the price is somewhat high, and I really disliked the $2 upcharge just for ordering fires instead of chips. Other than that, it has a great atmosphere and a non-typical menu.

I went to Gosport Tavern with a co-worker for lunch, as they were highly recommended. We were promptly met by a server to take our drink order and drop off menus. We Waited about 5 minutes for out drinks and about 15 minutes before the server came back for our orders. Which would have been acceptable if the establishment was busy but there were only two other tables sat at the time. The menu has a lot of great food to offer it was hard to choose. One we ordered the appetizer salad and lunch all arrived within minutes of each other. The food was super and once the order got taken the attention from the staff was really good. I had the crab cake lunch with fried green tomatoes both were excellent. The server went out of her way to ask if we wanted a to go cup to bring back to the office with us. We will definately be back.

We had a wonderful meal at the Gosport Tavern. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with lots of wood and candlelight. I ordered the caprese salad and tortilla soup. The salad had a wonderful, bright tasting, basil pesto. The soup was piping hot, spicy and loaded with chicken. My husband ordered the special which was prime rib.It was supposed to be 12 oz. but it had to of been closer to 16oz. It was huge and cooked perfectly. It had a delicious outer crust and the meat was so tender. And at $15 it is quite a bargain!

My husband and I went tonight and had a great experience. He had the shrimp and grits and I had a salad. Both were fresh and delicious. The service was excellent. Our server, Erin, was friendly and knowledgeable but not intrusive. She recommended the perfect beer, and some root beer that I'm now in love with. We will definitely be back and will recommend Gosport Tavern to others.

Been here a few times now. Good spot with good food. Recommend going during the week or on the weekends for dinner. I like brunch but for some reason I'm not a fan of their brunch menu on the weekends.
(4)Joshua G.
I've e only been her once and plan to visit again! they had a great selection of draft beer including a few local drafts! We tried the tator tots and sweet thai chili wings and both were excellent as recommended from other reviews! I highly recommend this place if your looking for local drafts and tasteful food!!!

I came here in the middle of a snowstorm because I was so hungry! There were about 8 people in the bar. The little red head bartender gave excellent service! I never had a gin and tonic in a tall glass that tastes so good. I ordered the Sailor Jack hamburger, that was pretty decent. The bartender kept good conversation and paid attention to all customers. I'd definitely stop by again.

Great drinks and great food! Unique and fun! Mixed drinks are delicious and the beer on tap has a nice variety. Food is super flavorful! First time here but I love this place and will be coming back soon!

I would be giving them a five but the service was a little slow during a weekday lunch. The food was super, especially loved the spinach salad!
(4)Leah D.
This once was a great place. That was a long time ago. I have been here several times since my previous review and the service and food have gone down DRASTICALLY! For dinner (when the restaurant isn't very busy) it will take HOURS to get your food. Today I went in for a quick lunch and it took 45 minutes to get appetizers and a little over an hour to get my meal. There were five other 2 person parties in the whole place. Why does it take so long to get my food??? And the food quality? Well it seems like there isn't much quality coming out of that kitchen. For dinner, I have had burnt Mac and cheese and buttermilk chicken. For lunch today, my fish (fish and chips) was burnt. What is happening back there that it takes so long to cook food that just comes out burnt? As for the service, the servers don't seem too excited to refill drinks (this has happened during dinner and lunch). It is sad to see another restaurant in Olde Towne go downhill. But I refuse to spend $30 on lunch that takes way too long to get and comes out burnt.

I'm a fan because their "a la carte" items were huge, tasty and reasonably priced. I have the pulled pork slider for $4 and it could have been a meal! Not to mention, that they had a bottle barleywine style ale - my favorite. The waiter was super helpful in getting me a beer I liked and he nailed it!
(4)Gabriel D.
Stopped by here by chance one night with a friend of mine. My order came out as expected the burger was very tasty and cooked to order - Medium. Its served on a wood board which is kinda cool, until your burger starts running juice all over the place and starts leaking off the side.... anyways kinda neat :) My friends order was not what she was expecting however the staff member understood and swapped it out for another item, which then came out wrong. By this point she just wanted to leave which we did shortly after. The beer selection is good and they allow you to sample taste them to see what you like. I would come back here again and check out further menu items. The establishment is clean and the bathrooms are very nice and clean and dare I say "fancy". So even if your order is not as expected you can be sure you will sit in luxury in the bathroom after :P

We came for a late lunch and found the place still busy but not too crazy. Service was attentive and food didn't take too long to get out. We tried several drinks from the tap and bar, all very good. The shrimp appetizer had super large shrimp with an amazing breaking on them. My kids both loved the cheesy grits and said they would come eat just those! The turkey and cheddar was large and very tasty. The salmon blt was awesome! The hot dogs were good as well. The homemade chips Rock! The chocolate dessert was well balanced. Not too rich but still flavorful. We really enjoyed our meal and drinks. Will be back to try more!

After reading the reviews this place look promising but the fried green tomatoes were mushy and the lump crab cake was not vrry lumpy, more like a pate the service was slow and the server kept saying she would bring more tea but kept forgetting. overall not a very good experience Food was average and slow service, overpriced for the quality and service.
(2)Andrae M.
I has the Buttermilk Fried Chicken with a side of Creamy Mac & Cheese. It was so good. Chicken was tender and seasoned well. Mac & Cheese was good. If I had one complaint, the buttermilk biscuit seem to be a day old. It was dry and little hard. However, I would definitely go back.
(5)K C.
Innovative menu that didn't disappoint. Fantastic fried pickles and a true Caprese salad. The pimento wasn't the best I've had but nothing in particular to complain about. My husband loved the Level 1 Coronary burger-- there is a Level 2 and Level 3 for those who want a challenge! Perhaps a tad overpriced but chalk it up to paying for a casually classy atmosphere.

EXCELLENT. The food, drinks, atmosphere, and service were all great. They have a large selection of drinks, although I was a little disappointed they didn't carry Blue Moon...nonetheless, I will definitely go back. I highly recommend it!

A+ for the baguette! I came here on a Sunday afternoon and it was surprisingly busy, so we had to sit at the bar. I like the seating options, which includes three tables outside and long high tables for groups. Bar seats were sturdy and comfy. Decor was simple and sophisticated. Both the brunch and lunch menus were available (yes!); each one page and not very extensive but with a good variety. I had the Effingham sandwich ($9), which had a generous portion of Virginia ham, green apples, and brie. Baguette was perfect, with a soft and chewy interior and sturdy exterior. I upgraded ($2) the side of chips for french fries, which were tasty. Service was excellent, with the bartender checking in every so often and the food and drink refills came quickly. Will have to come back to try the ham and cheddar biscuits...looked so good!
(4)Brittney D.
After trying this place out twice. I have yet to have a good experience with the bartenders. Each time I went and sat at the bar with poor customer service. Slow, rude and don't forget expensive. I live in the area and could come often but I'll go down the street. No thanks!

If you're comfortable with taking risks on your dining experience, then Gosport may be for you. For the first several meals we had there, we thought we had hit the jackpot. Excellent service, fantastic food and beer selection, over-all great experience. And yet, as another reviewer stated, it pains me to write a poor review of what was once our favorite restaurant in Hampton roads. But that's just how awful our last experience was - exorbitant wait time, cold food, horrifically poor service, and over-all the worst dining experience we've ever had. If you're going to pay more money relative to other restaurants in the area, you shouldn't have to gamble on what kind of experience you will have. Gosport is a hit or miss; for us, the risk is no longer worth it.

What a jewel of a find after deciding to walk out of the disappointing Still. Everything on this menu, from drinks to food, is well thought out and executed with consistent quality. The Pig Pickin was stupid good and probably the best sandwich I ever ate. Three dimensions of pork (ham, bacon and braised pork) juxtapose with spicy sweet pickled green tomatoes for total bliss. My wife is not into meaty sandwiches and I lost half of mine to her cause she could not stop eating. Her Caprese salad was very good with an interesting twist of serving the basil component as a pesto. And the drinks werr very good with Samuels Porch delivering a fresh delight while the Mexican Riviera offered complex dimension of cucumber, lime, tequila and jalapeno. To crown the effort, the triple chocolate pot au creme was divine and even the tangy caramel drizzle with coarse sugar crunch was multi-dimensional. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the prices surprisingly low. Well worth a repeat visit!

Food was amazing (we had the fried pickles for an app, and for entrees the burger and crab cake sandwich)...delicious all around! Service was great as was ambience. We are from out of town but stopped here with our dogs, they were happy to accommodate. The neighborhood was questionable and we heard a lot of sirens?? but this place was great and earned it's stars.

Great original food! They are really creative with their menu. They took some classics and made them their own. What we especially enjoyed tonight was the special touch that our waiter (Hunter) added to our evening. He was was very aware of the menu and took the time to get to know what I was interested in to ensure I ordered exactly what I wanted!
(5)Kevin C.
great atmosphere and the food is fantastic. I was looking for a good local spot with great food and beer/bar selection. This was a home run. Our server was fantastic and recommended the mac and cheese and I am really glad he did as it really was a highlight and the other dishes we had (charcuterie platter, oyster sandwich) were excellent as well. This is a great spot that I will return too whenever I am in the area.
(4)Corey P.
We 'be been here multiple times and have never been ignored like tonight. We sat at the bar and the bar tender was more interested in conversing with regulars at the opposite end and playing on her phone. The food and beer was awesome as always but it was missing the personal attention we 're used to receiving.

We stopped in for dinner before going to the movies. We actually were a few minutes ahead of the dinner hours were to start. Not to worry! We were able to order our adult beverages and take our time with the menu. I ordered the Cherry Limeade, very good, not too sweet, not too tart. I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken with the mac and cheese as my side and my husband ordered the fish & chips. Both dishes arrived at the table in very large & delicious portions. The food and the service was great. Save room for dessert, I had the peach cobbler Brule and my hubby had the whiskey walnut pie. Mine was just the right size after such a filling meal. We will definitely be making the Gosport Tavern a regular dining spot. Our server Lisa C. was very attentive, very knowledgeable and also told us about some of the other daily specials.

I give the Chef an A for Creativity Stopped in for lunch, the first chance I've had since they reopened. The menu is very creative - nothing ordinary and all sounded great. I ordered the Pig Pickin sandwich and substituted jalapeño-corn hushpuppies for the fresh chips. The presentation is different - comes on a wooden board instead of a plate or basket. The sandwich was piled high with ham, braised pork, bacon and large chunks of pickled green tomatoes on a baguette. The sandwich proved a bit of a challenge to eat but was very tasty. The menu said it came with a siracha aioli so I was expecting a little heat but it was nonexistent. The braised pork, in large chunks, was a bit on the dry side and slightly tough. The tomatoes were really good but the chunks were too big - would have been nice if they sliced them so you could get a little of everything in each bite. The huge bowl of hushpuppies was worth the $2 up charge. The place was very quiet but then there were only a few people in the place. I think they only had maybe 5 total guests besides me and my friend the whole two hours I was there. I can see where the place might get a bit loud if it were really busy but it still has a nice atmosphere. Definitely worth more trips to try the other creative menu items.

Great service and even better food. I love the Mac and cheese, the fried chicken, the green tomatoes....well pretty much everything! They have a huge beer list and great signature cocktails. The service has really improved since they reopened under different owners. There is a great ambience, casual but sophisticated. Over all this is one of the best restaurants in Old Town.

This restaurant is beautiful. Love the historic Navy name. Looks much better than it did under previous owners, the new team is displaying its pride in ownership. Yeah! I have been here a few times before and I loved it. Usually lunch with fellow service members and office luncheons. Always good! This time I went in to celebrate restaurant week. We ordered off the WHRO menu, a campaign the "sister restaurants" were participating in to support local television. Great thing to do, I was happy to help and eat great food for lunch. The menu was created by the chef just for this promotion. The soup contained crabmeat, spices and so much "yummy-ness" that I was EXCITED when my crab and seafood Mac N Cheese came toward our table. Yeah! But then I saw the clear water surrounded the clump of Mac N Cheese in the middle. Ah...no bigeye just strange then we dug in and the salty taste made our mouth pucker. The lump of seafood, baby shells and cheeses separated from each other, there was nothing "holding" them together as an entree. The ingredients separated into their own worlds never to synchronize and create a good entree. Great concept, poor execution! The dessert was a brûlée very well done. The waiter was excellent, the appetizer and dessert was fantastic and we will be back to eat off the regular menu. No more eating adventures while dining here. I lost a few ounces later that day so all things considered, a lesson was learned, no harm done. I will be back to eat my normal fare in the near future.

Let me start off by saying I had extremely high hopes for this place. I was in the area monday waiting to see my uncle who was at the hospital down the road. I yelped a place that had a good beer selection and ended up here. Awesome decision...which is why I was generous to give two stars. The day bartender was attentive and the manager (I believe) was cool to chat with. The white truffle fries were good and actually too many. The beer selection was great as well. On the chalk board was advertisement for penny pint nights on Wednesday nights which intrigued me and is why I ended up here tonight. Bad decision. Things starter off fairly well...we ordered a beer and got them...after a recommendation from the bartender and couple next to us I settled the sailor or something sandwich which was pastrami I believe. And my girl ordered fish and chips. About 20 min later the bartender comes to check on us and tells us our food is being plated and will be out soon. Fast forward 20 more minutes our food comes out. I believe what took so long was they were strategically placing the 9 french fries and 3 pieces of pastrami on my plate to make it look like there was more food than there actually was. The bartender then says "you have more fries on the way, these are skimp." Luckily for me they grew the potatoes in the back and cooked them fresh, at least that's what it seemed as the fries came out literally 25 minutes after my food arrived. The sandwich was less than stellar. The top bread was toasted great but the bottom piece was soggy like the food had sat in the back for 10 minutes before it got to me. The fish and chips were ok but the fries she received were cold. Another point of concern was the service two African Americans received. There was a white couple that came in and was greeted immediately by the bartender telling them to sit where ever they were comfortable. 10 minutes later two black women came in and sat at the bar...for 15 minutes they were ignored. Finally they got up and left without saying a word. If you're coming here for food there's probably some good choices if your server cares to get it to you when it's hot and ready. Don't sit at the bar unless you're a regular or an employee here as it seemed that's where the focus of the bartender was. For a place that has so much potential, in an up and coming part of town, there should be more consideration of who tends the bar. This could be a gold mine if people cared about ALL the customers that came in. If you plan on coming, come in the afternoon!
(2)Tima H.
takes way too long for food to come out. Fish and chips wasn't great. Ahi tuna was ok.
(2)Alan W.
Great food great service and a good selection of local beers.....and an owner who really cares about all of the above. Great place. I'll come here often.

Excellent first visit today. Took my mom to brunch for Mother's Day. The staff was very friendly and our waiter provided stellar service. The food was fantastic. Mom had a Bloody Mary and I had a Cherry Limeade for cocktails and fried green tomatoes in a wonder sauce that was sweet and a little spicy. Mom had shrimp and grits which she said was perfectly cooked and I had Tasso and pimento cheese sandwich which was darned tasty! It was sweet, spicy, smokey and salty. The flavors and textures combined beautifully. The prices were reasonable ($48 total) and well worth the drive into Portsmouth to visit.
(5)Jason Y.
Food was amazing both times we visited. I even attempted the level 2 coronary burger which was insanely good and enormous! The only issue that brought down the rating was the service on our second trip here. Server seemed unenthusiastic and unfriendly. Everything came out slow that night (even a bottled beer). The other server running around was very friendly and even chatted with us a lil but not the guy serving us. Wish the service was more consistent and matched how good the food was.

Gosport is rad. I went with my husband and kids (toddlers) for lunch after what felt like 12 hours at the children's museum. They were slammed so service was pretty slow but we weren't in a hurry so, no worries. I got a bloody hipster and it was bloody terrible but they do have tons of unique drink selections and a lot of beer diversity. I went with a Breckenridge Agave Wheat which never fails me. We ordered a turkey sandwich on a pretzel bun and fish and chips...easy, no frills. Both were exceptional. Our little girl dropped her leap pad behind the bench seating and the staff weren't annoyed at all, they even politely asked another guest to get up so they could pull the entire section away from the wall and retrieve the device. They truly exceeded expectations. We probably won't go back with the kids but will definitely be going back for a nice brunch, lunch date, or date night...and most likely will be ordering those delicious looking fried green tomatoes. drool.

Stop in for a drink! Had a few drinks quite expensive! Enjoyed the wings! Loved the fried green tomatoes!
(4)Shasa B F.
The ambiance is fantastic and I appreciate how they've grown since their grand opening last year. So far, they've revamped their menu and added a few things and moved some items, like the Effingham sandwich, to their lunch menu. Their beer selection is bigger, thank goodness and so is their bottle beer. The list provided doesn't exactly match what's in the cooler, but you can always look over the counter and get what you want, or ask the bartender what you would like.
(4)Samantha M.
Absolutely THE worst service (aside from our actually server, Erin) that I've ever had. The host rolled her eyes at us THREE times when we said we had a party of ten. THREE. She acted as if we were asking her to move the entire building as opposed to a few tables. We didn't think any party over six was an inconvenience.. The food runner was beyond rude as well. She argued with our table and we all work in the industry. The food took an hour, which is understandable for a Friday night, but the food runner proceeded to argue with the entire table after we asked what took so long. We then proceeded to go to the restroom and when we went inside we heard the food runner and bartender swearing and complaining about our table. Again, we all work in the industry and that was so uncomfortably unprofessional and tacky. Just to reiterate, our server Erin was AWESOME, but unfortunately the rest of the service was atrocious. The food runner and host should consider a new job for a source of income. VERY disappointed.

Went on Saturday for a late lunch. It was just delicious! I had the crabcake with fried green tomatoes and cheese grits. The dish was beautifully presented. Our server was delightful as well. Can't wait to come back for dinner!
(5)J D.
New owners, mediocre food at a premium price. I've given it three tries and have been disappointed each time. Here's a tip people... if you ask your customers "they overcooked this, is that ok?" You're doing it wrong! The service was fantastic twice and well, the last time was... horrid.
