I went for the first time this weekend. My food was excellent but the service was a bit slow. The other two people I was with weren't as pleased with their under cooked steak. Overall a good place to eat but a little pricey.

We drove there to meet a friend. The place was easy to find. There is a small parking lot next to the restaurant, and they do valet parking. The restaurant is a bit larger than what I initially thought, the decor is a bit darker which gives a cozy feel. We had reservation, and our friends were there before us already seated. Both of us had grouper and our friends had sword fish and vegetarian lasagna. All of the food were very good. No complains. The most of all was our server - she was very professional, very knowledgeable and polite. Gave us enough space to talk but also checked periodically to see if we needed anything. Both of us had a drink and the total bill for two of us was $70. I may go there again.

We sat at the bar on a Saturday evening. The bartender was cute and young, but not much personality (her boyfriend was there - maybe she was off her game paying attention to him). This is the type of establishment that would have a thriving bar crowd with a true professional behind the bar. Someone who can craft a drink, make conversation, upsell and recommend the menu etc. After having an underwhelming appetizer - fried calamari - and no reason to stay, we left for another restaurant.

I have heard wonderful things about the seafood at this place and live less than a block away so decided to check it out with my husband for dinner. I ordered the chef special which was salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The place is beautiful, the waitress was extremely nice and polite, and the food was wonderful. My salmon came with this strawberry mango salsa which I was worried would be too weird. But it paired deliciously with the salmon. The fish itself was fresh, juicey and cooked so nicely it almost melted in your mouth.

I'm going to start this off by saying, I understand where all the negative reviews for this place is coming from. I came in here with a very minimal expectation. Trust me, I was not a fan at first. I actually tried so many other times to eat here but every time we had to walk out due to the ridiculous wait. So this time we came prepared! I reserved our table a full week ahead for Norfolk's Restaurant Week. A full 20 minutes before our reservation time, I get a call from the hostess in an attempt to release our table to another customer. I called right back as we were walking up already. It was just a snafu, she did not mean to call me but another party. Just quite hilarious that the one time we did everything right, we were on the verge of quite possibly losing our reserved table. No big deal, we all laughed about it including the hostess who apologized tremendously for her mistake. Had we lost our table though, I would've considered it quits for this place completely. 456 Fish is suppose to be "high-end." I would say that they are just one of the more "grown up adult" restaurant on Granby, but by no means are they extremely upscale/high-end, jacket or dress attire, just look presentable and you will be okay. Lets move on... We were seated close to the door, but it was not at all a problem since their entrance had a heated foyer and there was also a clear narrow wall separating the entry way. We were soon prompted by a tall bald headed wait staff who came with water and then immediately questioned if we were there for the Restaurant week and if we needed more time to look over the menu. We asked for a few moments and he then returned to ask what we were having. After my date ordered, I was asked if I was just having the same, as if to imply that we couldn't possibly afford to order our own meals. A bit snobby, but I let that pass. I proceeded with my order and got a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon to go with my meal. We ordered the calamari and the crab spring rolls for appetizers. To my surprise, both were equally delish! The basil sauce for the calamari was a surprising treat. And the crab egg roll was deep fried adequately without it being too oily. Inside was a mix of Asian fusion with the bihon (rice stick) type noodle and real crab meat and minced veggies. On to the entrees. My date had the grouper filet with the garlic spinach and fried plantains on the bottom. I had the opportunity to try that dish and it was pretty tasty individually. The spinach was perhaps my least favorite out of that plate. The plantains were good, not soggy. The creole sauce had a slight kick in the end, but I wouldn't say its spicy at all. I had the crab cake with a jumbo broccoli and homemade mashed potatoes on the bottom. Let me just say how OH SO good the crab cakes were! The two sizeable cakes were perfectly crunchy and textured outside with a well seasoned filling on the inside. There was very minimal filler, it was mainly crab meat, which to me is the only correct way to make crab cakes! The mash was probably the absolute worse thing in the plate. It just felt bland and had a weird "old potato" taste to it. Side note, after we left the restaurant I looked at the restaurant menu and there was a remoulade that was suppose to go with the dish that did felt a little too dry by its lonesome. Had I known there was a sauce that was missing on my plate, I would've asked for it. The grand finale, the dessert of only 2 options. Cannoli and the cheesecake. They were equally good. The cheesecake however, was made well! None of that crust stuff that's just distracting from the tarty and mildly sweet cheesecake. It was a subtle end note, but I was satisfied with the meal in its entirety. So in comes my minus 1 star, for the wait staff that was just mediocre at his job. Not once did he come by to see if the food tasted fine or if there was something missing from my dish (like that remoulade!) or if we needed anything else. Yes, he refilled our water a couple of times, but no reassurance of where our food was for the first 10-15 minutes after ordering. It was just awkwardly unpleasant. I didn't have any problem with him in general, but had he at least made a decent effort to check up on us a few times, I would enjoyed this place so much more! Would I recommend this place? Yes, but it would not be my first choice. If I was ever in the need for some crab cakes though, its the only spot to go to!

Chicken and waffles were delicious! I substituted my regular waffles for red velvet and it took brunch to the next level. Plus a $3 mimosa...can't beat that. Price was reasonable. Outside seating available but flies are everywhere

Um. You guys. Why in the world doesn't this place have a 5 star rating?! So I came here with 15 on my closest friends, unannounced and had the absolute best time. First of all, EVERYTHING was amazing. The food, the drinks, the service, the pace. Everything. So my favorite things (other than the happy hour prices) were, in no particular order: The crab stuffed flounder Lobster Mac and cheese The crab cake appetizer The naan flatbread The beef barcole (or something) The scallops So basically everything! Look, just come. Make a reservation if you're coming when there's a show. I hear they get busy. Buy come when there's not a show so you can have the awesome half off happy hour!

I love this place! The wait staff is always friendly and willing to offer suggestions, it has a calm vibe, the drinks are tasty, and the food is wonderful. I've been here on a couple of ocassions and have never been disappointed. Whether I wanted white wine and a light fish dish or bourbon and a sweet dessert, I'm always satisfied. Not sure what to order? ASK! I haven't been let down yet.

Went here Sunday evening for dinner. I first started off with a Cosmo which was very good. I had their crusted pork tenderloin which was okay, it was almost slightly dry but not too bad. It was served with sweet potato medallions which were good and collard greens which I really enjoyed . The service was good and everyone was very friendly. The place was not very busy at all, there where only 2 other tables and that was around 6pm. I hope they got busier after I left, maybe they should consider being only open for brunch on Sunday's.

Everything was perfect. The best crab cakes; perfect vegetables; delicious salad and mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked just to medium rare as ordered. Best creme brulee I've had in a long time. The she crab soup was a bit off for my taste; the sherry was overpowering. But not off enough to stop me enjoying the whole bowl!

We arrived without reservations during restaurant week and was able to secure a table. I had the lobster macaroni and cheese, my huband had the filet and both were delicious. Our server Steve was attentive and pleasant. For dessert we ordered the Blondie brownie it was the biggest disappointed of the evening. But overall a nice experience.

Our first visit here won't be our last. My Belgian Waffle special was delightfully light and came with sugared pecans that were crispy and flavorful. I enjoyed the heck out of it! The upside pineapple cake martini was OMG amazing! If I hadn't known any better is have sworn I was having cake. It was beyond compare. My husband had the Guinness burger. It was super moist and had a great flavor. My husband had it devoured before I even had 1/4 of my waffle consumed. I brought home some bread pudding that I'm saving for after dinner. We enjoyed the live music. Our server was efficient, knowledgable and very friendly. He added to our experience. Definitely heading back for more visits.

It's intimate enough for a date and accommodating enough for a party. I saw it all go down during Restaurant Week. Our server was sincere. He asked how we were enjoying our courses, and when I mentioned the spring rolls were literally burning my mouth from the peppers, he offered to bring me something new. That wasn't my intent, especially since I'd already semi-suffered thru one of the two rolls. But it was nothing to it for him. He brought me an alternative -- I chose the caesar salad, because I'd also been munching on my friend's most delicious calamari. Getting full now... Despite my personal indifference with the spring rolls (which he attributed to a possible cluster of cayenne in one bite) all the other courses were excellent. There's a coat check. And the restroom has a wicker basket of individually rolled linen towels next to the sink. It's the little things.

Great place in downtown Norfolk! Centrally located. Great food. Nice atmosphere. Admit it was a bit slow for a Friday night but we were out early. 6p - headed to a concert @ 8. Two couples. Started out with a variety of eclectic martinis. Apps we had included calamari, she-crab soup. Calamari was unremarkable but the she crab was awesome! For entrees we had flounder, mahi, crab cakes and lobster mac. ALL were excellent and beautiful presented. Service (noting comments in other reviews) was spot on. They were less than half capacity but we certainly appreciated the attentiveness. Wish we could have stuck it out for desert but that will have to come in a later review. Highly recommended!!

I normally don't venture into Norfolk too often. I usually keep to Virginia Beach. However, I came to 456 Fish on Sunday for the last day of Norfolk's restaurant week. The first step in getting here was finding parking. We went past the parking before we saw the restaurant. It's not marked very well. We took a trip around the block to get to the parking, now that it was found. I had made reservations in advance to come here. When you come in, you can immediately tell this place is more upscale, as well as small and intimate. All of the servers were dressed in black with ties. Since we had a reservation, seating was immediate. For the appetizer, I had the crab spring rolls. They were really good and cooked well. The dipping sauce with it was delicious and had a nice kick to it as well. It went very well with the spring rolls. The main course I chose was the 456 Potato Chip Encrusted Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes. The crab cakes were delicious. There was nothing but crab in them. The potato chips held them together on the outside and was good with it. I had their steamed broccoli as well, though it was cooked a bit more than steamed. For dessert, I had the Coca cola cake. The cake was okay. It did seem a bit dry in some spots. It's not exactly what I was expecting. Next time I have a dessert there, I think I'll do the crème brûlée. Overall, the food here was good. I would come back again, but probably not until restaurant week next year. It's not so much because of the restaurant, but because there are places just as good as this place closer to home in Virginia Beach.

Happy birthday to me! My sweet man surprised me with a birthday brunch here and secretly invited my parents along.. so I was already in a great mood. I'm actually a bit shocked there weren't more people here on a Sunday afternoon. We dined in around 1pm and the place was maybe 25% full. We were greeted immediately and gave our drink orders. I wish our server had told us about the mimosa, screwdriver & bloody mary specials (it's on the bottom of the menu) before we ordered, but I suppose it's never too late to order a yummy mimosa! We had a few questions about the menu and our server was very knowledgeable and a joy to have around. He was present when necessary but never intrusive. I ordered the blackened tuna salad. It was perfectly cooked to order and seasoned well - a good amount of heat and spice. Greens and fruit on the salad were fresh and tasty. I'm glad I ordered the dressing on the side. It was inredibly thick! Others enjoyed the crab, asparagus and swiss omelet loaded with huge lumps of crab, as well as the fresh catch sandwich. Other perks - an "appetizer" of ginormous orange cranberry muffins. We saved them and had a bite or two for dessert. Yum! Also.. live music! The sax player was quite a talent. I can't wait to go back to try out the dinner menu!

We stopped in for a quick bite before a show a few weeks ago and sat at the bar. The restaurant and bar area are beautiful, but not enough to make up for the inconsistent service. We shared the calamari and then each had an entree (Grouper and Lobster Mac 'n Cheese). All of the seafood was well cooked and tasty, but there were a few execution errors: the fried plantains were buried and became soggy; the Béchamel sauce in the Lobster MaC was overworked and too thick. For the price, there are better options in the downtown area.

Came here again last night and everything was perfect after two years. I'm really shocked at the ignorant people who come here and complain about the no hat policy! What the hell?! I know it's the south and people don't have as much class. However, the rest of the world knows that when you enter someone's house or high end establishment, it's polite and good manners to remove your hat. The southerners who were raised in the back of a barn need to learn this. If not, go eat at Cracker Barrel. Our service was excellent. Cat explained everything in great detail on the menu and it was cooked perfectly. The beer menu was limited and they were out of pumpkin ale but it was ok because the service and food trumped it. Regarding people complaining of the price - this is good quality food and service. Coat check, etc. You get what you pay for and this was very reasonable. Really shocked at the amount of negative reviews here coming from people who don't know jack.

I took my parents here for their early anniversary dinner, and it also happened to be the last day of Norfolk Restaurant Week, so that was definitely a plus! (3 course meals for $30). I made reservations for 8pm, but we were seated a little earlier because it wasn't that busy. The lighting was very dim, which made it a little more difficult to read the menus. We were given waters right away and ordered drinks. I loved their mojitos; I find it difficult to find ones as tasty as a Mexican restaurant. As my appetizer, I ordered the she crab soup. It was very creamy with a delicious amount of lump crab meat and Old Bay seasoning. I would rate their she crab soup among the best I've had in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area! For my meal, I ordered the potato chip encrusted crab cakes. It came with two, and they were much smaller than most crab cakes I've had in this area, which may be because it was part of the restaurant week special. I really liked the extra crunch that the chips added to the crab cakes. The vegetables and mashed potatoes were a great pairing for the crab cakes as well. Now for dessert...the crème brûlée was to die for!! It's hard for me to describe, but all I can say is you have to try it! This place was delicious, and I definitely look forward to trying it again!

Great restaurant with attentive servers. I love the restaurants setup and modern vibe. Not to mentioned the food and drinks are amazingly delicious. Can't wait for my next visit. Summer was an amazing server.

I went here for a dinner business meeting. The meal was satisfying for everyone and not too over the top. The service was wonderful and everything was cooked perfectly. I wish the menu had a few more "new techniques" in food style, but overall everything was very yummy.

What a great place for Sunday brunch. Very smooth jazzy saxaphone music playing during a great meal. Dana was excellent serving our group of five. We all thought the eggs benedict was excellent. The coffee was great, mimosas, abd bloody mary's. Very nice atmosphere and excellent service. I would highly recommend for a great brunch selection. Nice portions at a reasonable price.

My husband and I came here last weekend after going to a movie - our original dinner plans were foiled because the place we had our eye on was closed on Sunday night, and we didn't realize until it was too late. So, we decided to be adventurous and try somewhere new. We felt a little under-dressed in jeans and sweaters, but we weren't denied service due to dress code. We would have figured that out had I taken the time to read everything, but I was at the point where I was so hungry, I was only focused on the food, not the ambiance when I was reading over Yelp. Our server was very friendly and helpful, and he made some great recommendations, and was able to accommodate my request for alterations to the crab cakes. Essentially, I requested the dinner option in the appetizer portion, and he was able to work that out with the manager, which I very much appreciated. My husband ordered the cajun pasta off of the specials menu, and very much enjoyed his meal. It was a large portion, with chicken and shrimp and pasta in a nice cajun sauce. As I previously said, I got the crab cake, and it was delicious! We also ordered the calamari for an appetizer, and that was nicely done - lightly fried rings, and served with a marinara dipping sauce and another sauce - it was green and my husband enjoyed it very much. We also ordered dessert - we don't usually. Billy's Cola Cake was too intriguing to pass up, and I'm glad we ordered it! I do love my pralines, and the icing on this torte was nicely reminiscent of pralines in New Orleans. Overall, nice place, I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for somewhere upscale.

It's a nice-looking restaurant, but the food is unimpressive. For the price (mid-twenties for an entree) I was expecting better. My grouper was presented very nicely, but it was overcooked and not complemented well by the other food on the plate. There were also issues with over-seasoning... do you really need that much garlic? Additionally, they actually mean it when they say they only serve fish. There are ~3 non-fish entrees (prime rib, filet, and pork tenderloin). This isn't necessarily a criticism but I'd be worried to bring a large party here in case someone isn't a fish fan. There is also no beer on tap, which is pretty ridiculous in 2014.

Excellent service, absolutely outstanding blackened tuna. Crab cakes pretty good-not a fan of the potato chip crust. Great collard greens, mashed potatoes so overcooked they were borderline inedible. Warm and inviting decor, and the area was very pretty as well. Everyone from the manager to the valet parkers were extremely service oriented (even though we didn't drive there!). PS-parking was ample.

Been here a few times.. Had to admit, I wasn't so impressed with the food.. The salads are ok and the fish was so-so. I went there on Sunday for brunch also.. Food wasn't bad, I just wasn't WOWED.

Yelp reviews tend to be a bit inflated, but if one goes by the rubric, this restaurant was "a-ok." As I walked in, the hostess was very friendly in greeting me and letting me look at their menu, but then after I decide to go in and she's leading me to the table, she tells me about their "no hat" policy. Uh...do you also have a no jacket policy that you want to tell me about before I actually get to my table and put down my bag and have time to take things off? Forgetting the fact that it's a bit of a silly policy, maybe at least let your guest get to the table to see if he's planning to take off his hat, as most normal people do at a decent restaurant once they get more than two steps in the door. (Btw, I don't wear a baseball cap, but more of an upscale cap in the "newsies" style.) The restaurant itself is pleasant, with a wall of running water dividing the bar area from the dining area, and my waiter was quite friendly and got me moving efficiently. I opted for a glass of wine with their ahi tuna sashimi (slightly seared) and then their signature crab cakes. The tuna was solid, but not spectacular. The portion size was decent, though tuna needs to be cut carefully to avoid sinew, and I had to work my way around some stuff (and spit out one piece). One warm roll later, it was on to the crab cakes. The crab cakes themselves were excellent. There was little filler, and the slightly spicy remoulade dipping sauce was a great complement (the potato chip crust was interesting from a texture standpoint, though I could have lived without it). It came with a large piece of broccoli, which was fairly plain but well-seasoned (though a bit of work to cut with my knife), and mashed potatoes. The potatoes were a disappointment in that they weren't warm enough (parts were kind of cool), and while service had been very attentive, my waiter kind of disappeared during the main course and didn't ask me how things were until I was nearly done; I never got to tell him how things were--or that the potatoes were kind of coolish--until it was too late. Somehow, two courses and a glass of wine got up to $60. Was it worth it? Honestly, not quite.

I came here with some friends for the first time and we enjoyed the atmosphere. It has an intimate setting perfect for a date but can also serve for a good place to have a nice dinner with some friends. Our waiter was very helpful and a great server. We had fried calamari and the egg rolls for an appetizer which were good. For the main course I had the crab stuffed flounder with a lovely garlic mashed potatoes I believe it was lol I hope I'm somewhere near right. One of my friends had the well known crab cakes which were some of the best I've ever had. The food was delicious however when it was time for dessert the bread pudding was amazing! I wish I had some more!

Great experience with customers tonight...service was excellent and food was wonderful. We had the sampler app - enough for the whole table with tuna sashimi, calamari, scallops, egg rolls, and shrimp. Then had the rockfish grilled (fresh catch) with broccoli and spinach. Others had the tuna and prime rib, both great choices with good flavor. They even accommodated our vegan diner with a great veg plate. All around a great experience and I would highly recommend!

Man. This is good seafood. Expect small delicious plates and for it to be a little pricey but it was well worth it. We got the soft shelled crab appetizer special, coconut shrimp, and surf and turf entree to split. Everything was spot on, even the garlic mashed potatoes (the perfect amount of garlic). We sat at the bar and the bartender was amazingly friendly and nice. We'll be back when we want to treat ourselves to a fancy dinner out.

I was in the mood for some fish last night after a workout at the nearby YMCA. This restaurant is a very short walk from the YMCA, and so this is where I decided to eat. I immediately sat at the bar after entering. Being a solo diner much of the time, I have found that I generally receive much better service at the bar than at a table, where I am often at the mercy of a wandering waiter or waitress. After taking a few sips from my martini and perusing the menu, I finally decided upon their 456 Grouper Filet, which is described on their menu as a pan-seared grouper, accompanied by sauteed garlic spinach, fried sweet plantains, spicy creole sauce, and balsamic syrup. I can only describe the quality of this dish as average at best. Being hopeful for a grouper filet which tasted fresh, tender and flaky, my filet tasted somwhat "fishy", a bit tough, and slightly undercooked. Its overall texture suggested that it may had been kept in the freezer too long. The spinach was ordinary and I could not taste the garlic. The plantains were mushy in texture and the creole sauce did not help their cause. I had also eaten here a few months earlier, during which I ordered the Sesame Seared Tuna Sashimi for an appetizer and their "fresh catch" entree which was swordfish that evening. The tuna sashimi was very pleasant and I had no complaints.. However, the swordfish was very bland, and the two sides were just ordinary. A second martini was also ordered last night as I was beginning to eat my grouper. Neither of my martinis were very strong and I barely felt them. What I did feel is what I might expect from one glass of wine. I will probably return to this restaurant in a few months from now to sample a "chef's special." But I am no immediate hurry, especially when there are a number of other restaurants nearby where their seafood offerings have proven to be more flavorful and artfully prepared. Overall, the best part of my meal last night were the salted mixed nuts I nibbled at from the bar.

Went to 456 Fish during early part of Restaurant Week. I've been there before and knew that the atmosphere, service and food were above par. They have not disappointed this week either. I was compelled to write this because we tend to be quick to criticize but slow to complement and I just shared a review for another Downtown restaurant that wasn't quite up to par. 456 succeeded because they are consistent with quality and for that, I WILL come back and spend my money. The shrimp aren't over battered and the sauce was delicious! Fresh steamed broccoli and mashed potatoes that are mashed with the red peels, without excessive butter or salt. BRAVO!

Went here last night for our pre anniversary dinner chosen by our daughter. Excellent choice by her! The place was cozy, our server, Adam, was very attentive, and the food was great! Would highly recommend this place if you're in downtown Norfolk! A must try.. the creme brûlée.. it was to die for!

Above average service and excellent food! I had the pleasure of dining at 456 fish during the week. They were notably slower than historic peak times, so a busy Friday or Saturday may offer a different level of service. But I can only describe my experience and the quality of food. To the latter, I ordered the special, a red snapper. It was cooked to perfection and had plenty of flavor. I generally prefer salmon but being my first visit to 456 Fish I wanted to try something new. I was very pleased. The dish comes with two sides. I chose vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes, both were very delicious. To end the night my companion and I chose to share the Chocolate fudge dessert. It was very rich and sweet. The portion is better shared rather than indulged alone. Generally, I avoid dessert but my companion was craving something sweet. Not that I was upset to try it. I also had some coffee. In regards to the service, there were a couple times that my companion and I were conversing only to be interrupted by the waitress. Generally, I applaud aggressive service but in a couple of instances prudence would dictate waiting for a more appropriate moment to interject. Albeit, this is a pretty minor infraction considering the timeliness of receiving our food and having a filled glass of water for the duration we were there. Overall, I was pleased with the food and service and I would go back again. It is reasonably priced and offers online reservations to facilitate the customer.

One of the best all around restaurants in Hampton Roads. Whether it's seafood, steak or the wonderful Sunday Jazz Brunch you can always find something outstanding to eat. The food is only matched by professional and friendly service. I highly recommend 456 Fish for great food and a very good time.

The food is good, I have been here over a dozen times. I will never ever come back however. I walked in with some colleagues on a cold January night, with a winter hat on. The hostess very rudely stated there is a no hat policy as soon as I walked in the door. With the few patrons you have on any given night you should be more respectful. Good luck....

Went there for brunch- it was good! Our server was very sweet-- and great to the bratty kids we had with us :) - food was good.. although it is HARD to mess up breakfast! Though we will live in the Rotunda so location is perfect for us... we will for sure being going back soon! Lindsey

We had a function here for school and I really liked the service here. From what I hear, downtown Norfolk wasn't all that hip and happening a few years ago but slowly it's starting to get more gentrified with the mall and all the condo's and new developments going on. Admittedly, it was a sponsored dinner so there service was great, the food was well prepared, and my drink was never empty. I don't know how it would be one on one but I had the Caeser Salad, Grouper as my main, and the flourless chocolate cake/torte. Really well prepared food. The Caeser Salad came out properly dressed, not soggy, with the requisite crouton "stick." If they serve this for the elegance factor, I suppose it looks pretty on the plate but it's irritating breaking it up with your fork and to watch the pieces fly. The dressing was good though, not too tart, not bitter, creamy and probably housemade? I wondered if they put anchovies in. Yum. The grouper came out delicious. It's their signature dish that has plantains and it was cooked ok. I noticed there were some albumin collecting ever so slightly on the fish, skin-side. I suppose since all of our dishes came out around the same time, this is why it happened. It's the classic argument of food prepared timely or food prepared well. Either way, it tasted delicious and was very well seasoned. So no complaints. My friend had the filet and that was very well prepared. The cake was cake. Delicious, decadent, creamy, and perfectly chocolate-y. Portion was great as it was a rich and dense dessert but a very fitting end to the meal. I would definitely come back again, on my own, to see how it is one on one.

I went here during restaurant week and was not impressed. I had a fillet of red snapper and it was clearly not fresh. My buddy who was with me said the same thing about his grouper. I'd like to try coming here again though since I've heard great things since. Maybe it was just a fluke. Service was so so, but my real problem with the restaurant was the food was downright inedible. Nothing was seasoned and the fish tasted like it had been sitting around for a week. Again, maybe just a fluke, but it still left me a little weary about this place.

If I could give this zero stars, i would. I went for the 'Lobster Night', and paid almost $30 each for what was described as a descent sized lobster by the waiter, which should have been around 1 1/4 pounds Upon arrival, all three were baby lobsters, know as a 'chick' and probably around 1/2 - 3/4 of a pound. These lobsters don't even have a fully developed hard shell, and almost no meat in them. The sell in the local restaurant supply ( I am in the business) for around $5 - 6 / pound, meaning that the lobsters that I paid $28 each for cost them around $4. I asked for the manager, and was rudely told that it was a 1 1/4 pound lobster, and that basically i could go F myself. Normally, any manager would make some apology to a party of three that is spending almost $200 on dinner, with cocktails, appetisers, and a $40 bottle of wine, and at least offered a free desert, or after dinner drink! NOTHING! I left feeling totally ripped off, and will never go to any of their other restaurants. SAVE YOUR MONEY, and find an honest restaurant, that actually cares about their customers!

Went for my mother's 80th birthday. The staff were very accommodating by speaking louder and being patient. The food was superior and atmosphere was great. I highly recommend 456 Fish!

Finally had the opportunity to try this place out yesterday for a belated birthday lunch. The name is 456 Fish yet I sat looking at a chicken sandwich on their brunch menu! After going back and forth I finally decided on their 456 Potato Chip Encrusted Jumbo Lump Crab Cake sandwich. I'm a big fan of eating crab but not super big on crab cakes. This sandwich was quite large and had a good amount of crab to it. The potato chips encrusting the crab was okay. I suppose I could have been without it. What was the steal of the meal though were the fries! Yes, the fries. They were freshly cut, large in size and perfectly mixed with seasoning. I have this quirk about me where I portion my bites so that my sandwich and fries are all gone at the same time but I blasted through my sandwich just so I can enjoy the fries. I was quite pleased to eat a stack of fries that don't come off of a truck frozen in a bag. As for the establishment itself I didn't initially notice that a gentleman was playing a saxophone. What a nice touch. The wait staff was very friendly and did a good job of making sure things were smooth. I had a good meal but didn't walk away with any sort of special feeling. With the fries stealing the show I can honestly say that this experience was okay. I'll be back though because I'm confident there is something there that I would love.

I come home for about 30 days a year. and this one of the spots I must hot in the first week and the last week while there. Outstanding Crab cakes, and a very nice wine list (a little pricey). I love this place. The trip home must begin and end with this joint. Great food, good service, nice atmosphere.

I love breakfast food! The brunch at 456 fish was so amazing! There are so many choices. I had The Gilly - eggs, sausage, biscuit, and fruit -, which was very good. I have never been to 456 fish before, it is really nice. The wait staff was good! They were attentive and helpful! Everyone in my party like their food. I would suggest 456 Fish.

High quality service, high quality food!!! Nothing much to do in Norfolk except for the restaurants in downtown. I'm glad I utilized Yelp to help narrow down the choices. And I agree with the other reviewers about this place. Nice establishment, classy wood chairs and tables, fancy water falls that separates the bar and the dining room. Antique like overhead fans powered by a series of conveyor belts. Due Torre '09 Pinot Grigio- Nice, crisp and light wine from Italy. Sorry I'm not a wine connoisseur, but it was good. Crab Cocktail Norfolk - one of their signature appetizers. Served with cocktail sauce, melted butter and lemon. Very filling, yum yum. See pics for visual representation. Angel hair pasta with grilled tuna- Again superbly done. Tuna was firm and cooked to my satisfaction, medium rare. Pineapple Upside Down Martini - Stoli vanilla vodka, amaretto, pineapple juice, with a grenadine sink. Sweet and slightly bitter. Again a fufu drink that I enjoyed. 456 Ganashe - molten lava chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and raspberry glaze. Yum, and I feel super-fluffy. Stuffed and satisfied for coming here. You need to dress slightly better than casual to come here, but a pretty good experience. Nice view of Granby street.

O man o man. I was one excited dude to finally have the opportunity to try this restaurant after hearing so many "unbelievable" things about it. Perhaps it was the hype, but I wasn't as thrilled with my food as other people were. Here's why: 1. Their famous crab cakes had a special sauce that they mention all over their menu. It turns out that these cakes were spicy... with wasabi. Sorry, not my cup of tea. On the upside, though, they weren't stingy with the crab in the cakes... just too bad the taste was off. 2. The only non seafood items on the menu were the angel hair pasta and the steak. Don't get me wrong, I came here for seafood, but in an effort to try everything, a friend and I chose to have a steak as well. Most seafood restaurants try to have a non seafood dish on their menu and often times steak is one of those. Especially for a high end restaurant, they try to make all their dishes taste good. Unfortunately, that's not true with their steak. We had ordered a medium rare and the first steak came back as a well done steak. Ok, simple mistake. They kindly take the steak back and bring another one that is rarer... but not quite medium rare. This time, there is no glaze on the steak and it turns out that the quality of steak was sub par as well. It was just tough. Service here was spectacular. I am going to give credit where it's deserved. They were very quick to help us out with our issues and even gave us a free dessert which was quite kind of them. I also had a beer battered soft shell crab. I've had it before at other restaurants and it's very hard to do well. The dish they had was A-OK. Nothing spectacular, but not bad at all. The best part of the meal was probably the dessert. Their creme brulee was not overly sweet and the bread pudding was actually quite flavorful especially with the side of ice cream. They have parking there next to the restaurant and when it gets busy they can valet it. They weren't particularly busy on a Friday evening when I went, but it was also probably because most people had gone away from town for summer vacation. If someone really wanted to go here I would probably go with them and just avoid the steak and crab cakes, but it wouldn't be a restaurant that I would say is a "must" try. It's possible that I just ordered the wrong things, so I want to be clear that I am not criticizing the entire restaurant, but at least from what I ordered, I didn't not leave with as good of an impression as some of my other fellow yelpers here.

Good was ok. Nothing to write home about. The worst part was they messed up the check. They tried to add a tip to a table they already added had it added for the large party. Then it's stumped them how to split it four ways. Been sitting her for half and hour waiting for them to finish it. I usually don't write reviews unless something was seriously messed up and this is! Finally he came back with our checks. No 10% off or anything like that. Just an apology and then asked us to fill out review cards. Seriously we were stuck for 45 minutes and then you want us to fill out review cards? HA!

This definitely hit the spot in our seafood cravings. Because we're not from the area, we were given two recommendations by our hotel. Since the other was closed to a private party, this was a welcoming alternative. The atmosphere is was upscale and elegant and service was top notch. If I'm ever in the Norfolk area again, I definitely will be returning.

I came here again for Restaurant Week with two friends. We ordered the following. appetizers: sesame seared tuna sashami - Uh, it's tuna sashami. she crab soup - We received melted butter. I couldn't handle more than a few sips. soup of the day - I don't remember what it was, but it was good. entrees: crab cake - They forgot the remoulade! Otherwise it was good. The garlic mashed potatoes were standard. grouper fillet - This was the weakest entree. The combination of the fillet, sauce, and fried plantains did not work at all. I believe it was also served with raw vegetables on the side. Who wants groceries on the side? bacon wrapped tenderloin - Surprisingly, I enjoyed this the most. It was a large serving, tasty, with great sides: smoky collards and lentils. desserts: creme brulee - Par. chocolate sin torte - Bogey. This tasted like black coffee. Gross. guava cheesecake - Birdie. This was interesting. Cheesecake with a hint of guava. overall: 2 tasty or interesting 4 standard 3 failures I guess that makes it A-OK?

Very good food - all of the specials and regular menu items have been prepared well and had great flavor. I would highly recommend. I didn't love the calamari, so I'd advise against that. Bottled beer selection is a bit bland and no tap beer but decent wines and good bar. Presentation of the meal was very good - service was not quite top-notch but acceptable and friendly enough. A definite good bet - you won't go wrong.

This is absolutely a solid lunch option in Norfolk (and probably a great dinner option.) Cool atmosphere at lunch - good for a meeting or group. The spring rolls and fish tacos were great, but the crab cake easily was the best thing I had at 456 Fish. I get a crab cake every time I'm in Baltimore, but it's never been this good. In fact, I can easily say I've never had a crab cake this good anywhere (Note: I don't consider myself a crab cake connoisseur & not even a fan.) Have to tip my hat to 456 Fish....recommended.

I was on vacation in Norfolk and we decided to try this place. The food was good but the service was just awful. Our waitress was extremely rude. We got there hours before close and she was rushing us the entire time. My boyfriend went to use the bathroom and she told me to take the wine home so we could finish it. She made us so uncomfortable we left soon after that. Hopefully this was a one time thing.... But it was still very disappointing.

Food was good but the service was slow.. I had the grouper, my wife had the blacked tuna but the service was slow.. Cooked well and the vegetables were well prepared but if I did not mention the service was slow.. And that took away from the whole dining experience..

Hubby, daughter and I ate at 456 Fish for lunch today...we shared the calamari, daughter had a burger and I had the crab cake sandwich. Alomost forgot...hubby had the scallops appetizer as his meal and I also had a bowl of she crab soup. Ok, the crab cake sandwich was ok but not the best...it by far does not beat AW Shucks crab cake anything...! The calamari was ok, daughter didn't like the burger and hubby said the scallops were pretty darn good. The she crab soup was pretty good as well; however, I have had better so it didn't leave a remarkable impression on my taste buds. The service was average and the saxophone player was nice. The restaurant does have a cool cieling fan...like this really matters but I felt the need to share...lol. Not sure if we will go back due to the average meal and high cost...we nearly spent $80.00 with nothing really to rave about.

We rarely head to downtown Norfolk at night. Its just too far to drive for dinner and drinks. However, we were on our way to the Chrysler museum today and decided to hit somewhere for lunch first. Surprisingly, the Granby area of Norfolk is dead on an early Sunday afternoon. No traffic and ample (free) street side parking. Those are positives in my book. We parked right next to 456 Fish and decided to try their Sunday brunch. First thing you notice on the bottom of the menu is $3 Bloody Mary's, Mimosa's, or screwdrivers. The BM's were superb. I haven't had one this good in a long time. For chow, the wife and I split a bowl of she-crab soup (way good!) then she had the Tilapia BLT and I had the fried oyster sandwich. Both were fresh, delicious and very affordable. Sunday brunch is a great way to sample what this restaurant has to offer. Its easy to get to, its easy to park, and you get great food and drinks for a great price.

What???? butter but nothing to put it on!!!! We went there for my husbands birthday. He asked me to look for seafood. So I went to Yelp of course and thought this place would fit the bill. Was I wrong!!!!!Waiter spilled water and glass of wine on the table, never offered me a new glass of wine.I had to ask for a dry napkin under my glass as it was soaked.Brought butter after serving appetizers but no bread, no explanation until I asked.(the kitchen had run out of bread) Appetizers were ok.Finished our appetizers and 20min later still no maincourse! Then couple at next table got their meal although they came in at least 30min after we were seated. We left before getting our main course. We've never gotten such bad service even in a diner! The attitude of the wait staff was inexcusable! Like to give minus stars.

Service on a non busy Wednesday night was very slow, it took 30 minutes to bring out my meal. I ordered Mahi Mahi, the chefs used 2 seasonings ,salt and GARLIC, wait a minute that should have read 3 seasonings, salt and GARLIC and GARLIC. Now for the level of butter, floating in butter. The fish was on a bed of risotto rice, the rice was floating in butter. If I was not starving by the time I got to this restaurant I would have sent it back and walked out of the restaurant. Sad thing is I walked out hungry since it was impossible to eat most of the meal. Perhaps it was just this dish, nonetheless I would not go back for a second chance.

Came here during restaurant week on a Friday (make reservations!) and was very impressed. The decor inside was breathtaking...waterfall sectionals and cherry wood walls surround you. Attire is dressy so keep that in mind. They have a smaller wine/glass selection but very good...I had the dry riesling. Awesome. The food. For starters I decided to keep it simple and get the cesear salad..YUM. Very fresh and good. For my entree I had the Grouper Filet, which was cooked and done very nicely. For dessert I had the creme brulee with fresh berries. Not the BEST creme brulee I've ever had, but good nonetheless. My friend had the Chocolate Sin Torte and I think I enjoyed that the best....very deep dark european chocolate. SO good. I would def return here for a nice dinner with family or a nice date.

Very friendly professional yet down to earth staff. Had the fried oysters. Very tasty with the greens and sauce. Great service. Bartender went out of her way and jotted down some great eateries and a coffee shop near my hotel. I was impressed with how the entire staff cared for me as a person vice a dollar sign. If I lived here this would be my go to place.

I don't really like seafood, but I'll go to a seafood place every now and then if my wife wants fish. I had the Mahi at 456 and it was very tasty. The way it was cooked gave it a great seared texture. The tropical risotto on the side complemented the flavor of the fish. Additionally, our waitress was very upbeat, friendly, and helpful. If I liked seafood I would probably give five stars. It is a bit pricy, but no more so than other upscale seafood places.

You cant go wrong here. This is my go to place in Norfolk. I have never been disappointed. Great service and great food. The crab cake is wonderful and you have to have their signature lobster or shrimp spring rolls. Amazing. Reasonably priced and always consistantly pleasing!

First time there, was during the current Restaurant Week, and we'll be back routinely. Very satisfying. Food was very good (great she-crab and good spring rolls apps, butterflied shrimp and the crab cakes are perfect mains, potatoes not as advertised w/ garlic missing and not roasted but only whipped and needed butter and seasoning, broccoli lacked seasoning and proper steaming as well, desserts good), and service was great (thanks, Bryan. Had to run to the tow shop w/ our daughter if that helps you). Comfortable and business casual atmosphere (aside: our experiences show that many patrons are way too casual for the establishment and for the time of the meals during restaurant week, especially like here and Byrd and Baldwin). Recommend using the valet parking, and making reservations. See you for brunch and often.

First time here. The soup of the day (Fish and Coconut) was excellent. My main course was a signature dish (Grouper Fillet) was not as good. It was dry and not very flavorful. My dessert was great (Ganche). Found the restroom extremely clean. Will try again and hope main course can live up to expectations.

My boyfriend and I went here for our anniversary dinner. I would give this place more more of a 3 1/2 star rating. The setting is nice, as I especially like how all of the fans are interlinked via one fan belt. However, it was rather loud, and I often had to raise my voice in order for my boyfriend to hear me through all the laughter/ruckus of the restaurant. I had the crab stuffed flounder, which was pretty good, but it didn't blow me out of the water. My boyfriend's dish (it was fish, although I don't remember what specifically) was so-so, nothing too special either. The restaurant is pretty good, and I think that it was worth the money, but I think I had higher expectations because my other friends had eaten here and raved about it. The seafood is good, but I think you can get just as good quality for a better price (A.W. Shucks, for example). I wouldn't recommend coming here for a romantic dinner.

I just realized I've never reviewed 456 Fish - considering I'm there almost twice a month, I consider this a crime - perhaps in my deep subconscious I really didn't want all of you heathens to come and ruin my good time. I really love this place. Most things are very good. For starters, you should try Mama's Lobster Spring Rolls - mmmmm. They also do calamari very nicely here - and I'm actually not a huge fan of calamari. The fresh catch is always an excellent choice for the main course - especially when Rock Fish is in season. The wasabi mash (not on the menu) works well with broccoli as sides. I've also had the Salmon, Potato Chip Encrusted Crab Cake and a slew of other specials - nothing has ever disappointed. Though you aren't required to don a jacket, I recommend wearing something nice. Most people are dressed nicely here. I almost forgot. Do you like dessert? I'm not generally a dessert eater; however, if you sit down for a dinner and never try the 456 Ganache, I will personally slap your mother in the face. Yeah that's right, I went there. It takes about 12 minutes to bake, but it is well worth the wait (I've visited late night just for this). Sip some port or red wine as the warm chocolate oozes out of the chocolate cake and mixes with the ice cream - forget about it!

I haven't tried to many restaurants in downtown Norfolk and I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I had the Macadamia Crusted Mahi with the Coconut Risoto which were both absolutely fantastic and the Chocolate Sin Torte with the Shiraz was heavenly. I will definately try this place again.

Wow, what a horrible experience. When we sat down, our waiter immediately arrived to take our order. When we gave it to him, his decision to not write it down piqued our interests. The food arrived, except it tasted horrible. The salads were so drenched in dressing, it was essentially Caesar dressing soup with a few pieces of lettuce. It was somehow still bland though. When a few people did get soup, it was ridiculously spicy. I had never had a spicy clam chowder before, but I suppose there is a first time for everything. Maybe there were new cooks in the kitchen. When it was time for one person in our party to receive their entree, it never came. After waiting for 40 min and not getting the entree, we called the waiter over and asked about the entree. He said "Y'know, I thought I remembered someone ordering pasta, but wasn't sure, so I didn't check or put in the order." We then suggested that next time, he might want to write down the order, at which point he chuckled and walked away whiteout saying a word. Without offering to place the order or make the situation right, he brought the check and didn't say anything. I would have left a tip, but I forgot to write it down. I guess it happens to everyone. When I approached the manager, he apologized profusely but did nothing to make the situation right, such as a refund. If you're looking for food, don't come here. If you're looking for a great story to share with friends about a horrible dining experience, check this place out. Just be sure to write down the story so you don't forget it.

In my opinion, the best crab cakes available anywhere. We've eaten here countless times, sometimes for a fancy night out, sometimes just for drinks and appetizers at the bar, but I don't think once have we NOT gotten the crab cakes. They are all lump meat and coated with potato chips, which does sound odd, but is amazing. They have a bit of horseradish inside for an awesome kick. We've eaten, of course, things other than the crab cakes, and everything has always been delicious. We often bring our out of town friends here. The bartenders are also really good and they have a nice wine selection.

Ok, let me first say that after reading the reviews I had high expectation that sadly were not met. For starters the place was so busy that there was only one table, which didn't bother me. Then it took the waitress like 20 mins to come back to take our order. The food was nothing to write home about. They don't offer frozen drinks. Also when we had requested one additional pieces of bread we never got. To add salt to the wound, the waitress was extra friendly and remembered who we were when it was time pay the tip. All i have to say is when a restaurant decides to up their prices I as a customer expect MUCH better. Telling me that you're busy, is inexcusable and not my fault as a customer. I've been in plenty busy spots that still provide great service. I'm paying just as much as everyone else. I won't be going back.

I have been here for dinner at least a dozen times over the last couple of years. Today us the first time I have tried their brunch offering and I doubt I will ever do so again. I get the regular emails from (I believe her name is Kathy H.) them and was excited to try a new brunch spot. The drinks were great. The service was excellent. That's where the good stops. I ordered the eggs benedict with crab. The plate was cold, as were the home fries (I admit that I am picky, but what chef is unable to chop onions to a similar size and remove the onion peelings??!!), the english muffin was burnt (THE explanation was that the grill caused it as opposed to the cooks), the presentation was messy and crab addition did nothing because there was no prep, no seasoning. In short, it came up quite short. My mother ordered the Regular Joe and her food was cold. She sends it back after seasoning her eggs and do you know when the brought out her "new" plate, it was the same cold egg. Come for dinner, you shouldn't be disappointed, but brunch was a let down.

I've been here three times for lunch, and been pleased w/ my meal every time. Seems a little pricey, but so far I've only been when someone else is treating so, no worries! The turkey croissant is exactly what it says it is--just be sure to ask for some mustard. The fish tacos are REALLY good; I've had them twice and it is going to be hard to ever go there and order something different. Unless I am footing my own bill, in which case I will get one of the sandwiches again; most def. No issues w/ the service. They are really good about asking for your coat, so that's nice. Personally, I don't like giving people my coat, though. Usually have stuff in the pockets, don't want to invite a situation. In fairness, none of my coworkers' coats have been robbed. I'm just very cautious about such things.

I made reservations one night with my Mom. When we got there they couldn't honor our reservation :( We ended up eating and sitting at the bar. The food was delicious! I had the crab cakes. I have never had a better crab cake. They were delicious! The atmosphere was nice too. I would recommend this place if you are in the mood for seafood!

I have only been to 456 Fish for brunch on Saturday and Sunday and I have been incredibly pleased both times. The atmosphere is very nice, and there is live saxophone music that is not intrusive or overpowering in the space. The prices are reasonable , think $8-$16 for brunch, and the mimosas/bloody mary's are well-priced too. Service is obviously a priority, and this is one of the reasons I chose 456 Fish for a family brunch. There is also an adjacent parking lot, which is convenient if you hate to parallel park. My favorite brunch item is the Tomato Tower, consisting of poached eggs, garlic spinach, tomatoes and canadian bacon. The lunch menu is also avaialable for those who are not into eggs, crepes, or french toast.

Fortunately I did not have any expectations except maybe that I could eat lunch in under an hour. Waitress passed us up for a different table multiple times so we waited 10 minutes just to order food. I explained that we were short on time and she said if would take about 20 minutes. We ordered and then waited. She did drop off a refill, but did not ask if we needed anything. At 25 minutes I went to check on our food and was told by another server that it was not ready (though the previously crowded restaurant had emptied out to maybe 1/3 of the tables taken). He checked on our food and told us the delay was ordering a well done hamburger. So we finally got the cheeseburger and grilled chicken sandwiches after a 30 plus minute wait. The food was ok, but nothing special. I had to flag down the waitress to get the check, she dropped it off without a word and never came back. She checked on the tables next to us but avoided eye contact with me. I finally dug out some cash (I had had my check sitting up at the end of the table with my credit card) and left. Maybe their specials are good, but they cannot be worth the price with service like that.

Eating at 456 Fish was a wonderful experience. The food was excellent (both my wife and I had the salmon), the waiters were attentive, and the mood comfortable. The only issue I have with this restaurant is the parking. Perhaps once all of the road improvements have been completed this issue will go away.

Excellent food and service - very classy - - a "must" for your Norfolk visit..........I selected this restaurant due to reviews on Yelp - and it definitely held true to the great reviews - we were very impressed!

This was my second stop during restaurant week in Norfolk, VA. My friend told me I'm hard to please, but either way, this place finally met all my expectations. I made reservations, which I suggest you always do on a weekend night. My friend and I were seated very close to another table for two, but what separated us was a wall of flowing water. It certainly added to the beauty of the place and allowed us to not hear or even see the table in close proximity to us. 456 was spacious with high ceilings. There was a large bar area and old black and white photos on most walls. There is more information about the photos on the website. It was classy and sophisticated and I suggest you dress a little more professional and conservative. My friend suggested I start with a dry riesling, which I did. I usually drink reds, but this was a great addition to my meal. I started with the she crab soup. It was delicious and I ate it quickly. My friend and I both ate the 456 Grouper Filet, which was a pan-seared grouper, sautéed garlic spinach, fried sweet plantains, spicy creole sauce & balsamic syrup....and yes you needed the entire description. It was so good. When I first read the menu, I thought it came with tostones because that's what I think of when I see plantains, but they were in fact sweet. It definitely added to the dish, without being overpowering. I finished the evening with a couple bites of some chocolate cheesecake. It was good. I just couldn't get over my entree. Now, the service: The waiters are on top of everything! They are there immediately filling up water, taking away a fork, adding a spoon and even removing crumbs. They are all dressed in black and it's as if their goal is be in and out without any conversation with you. If you talk to them, they are thrown off. Our waitress showed no emotion, but she was on point! So, if you are in Norfolk, you have to go here. You will not be disappointed.

Ate here back in April to celebrate our anniversary. Have to give it 2 thumbs up and 5 stars to match one of the sister restaurants Byrd and Baldwin Brothers Steakhouse (nearly right around the corner and also gets 5 stars!!!). We thoroughly enjoyed the calamari appetizer ( huge serving!) and the potato chip encrusted crab cakes were different yet delectible! Highly recommend this establishment and look forward to returning! 2 restaurants down and 2 to go- Bodega and Big Easy are in the downtown Norfolk family of restaurants!

The best crabcakes in all of Hampton Roads. The have a very romantic ambiance, and their servers are very sharp and helpful. Thet are no means inexpensive, but it's worth every penny.

Went to 456 Fish for dinner with some colleagues from work. The calamari appetizer was delicious - light and crispy on the outside and tender meat on the inside. My blackened wahoo (fish of the day) was tasty and cooked just right. The plating was superb. One of my colleagues had the macadamia crusted mahi mahi and he said that it was delicious. Service was prompt but a bit brusque, this brought down my rating to 4 stars. It could have been better given that it was a weeknight and moderately busy.

456 fish has pretty good food, and overall I was satisfied with the experience there. Service was very attentive and pleasant. Don't mistake "good" for "great" and the food here that I have tried was good. Also, unless you are going for seafood, there are better options than 456 fish for the $$. There are non-seafood options, but steak I tried was just OK (it is passable). Recommendation #1: The tuna sashimi appetizer---IS EXCELLENT! This was the star of the night--sesame crusted rare tuna with fresh ginger, wasabi, and seaweed salad. The crabcakes, mahi, and lobster hushpuppies were all good, but I wont be craving them or begging to return for those items....the tuna sashimi appetizer is another story--and its fairly priced at $9. The desserts are also pretty good (tried creme brulee and coconut cake). Would happily go back here with someone else was wanting to go, but this wont be a regular spot or first choice for me. Its pretty expensive and dare I say somewhat overpriced.

Beware the curse of escolar. Google it if you want more information. In September I had dinner with friends at 456 Fish prior to going to the Sade concert at the Scope. I was the only one who ordered the "Grouper" special. While the meal tasted ok, not great, the bad part was to come. I tried to enjoy the concert but had to leave my seat at least 6 times to run to the rest room!!! I was violently sick and it wouldn't stop. I suspect that instead of Grouper I was served what is cryptically known as the ex-lax fish or escolar!!! Recent articles have shown that this is a common switch in restaurants. Stay away! You cannot trust that what you order is what you will be served!

I went to 456 Fish on a Saturday night before seeing Wicked. We had a reservation for 2, which was ready when we got there. They sat us at the end of the waterfall wall in a teeny tiny 2 person table. I'm petite, so not too big of a deal except it was a main walkthrough. My arm was bumped or fabric touched my arm by every person that walked by me. We ordered a bottle of wine and an appetizer. The appetizer was served before the wine bottle even hit the table. We ordered the Ahi, so it doesn't take long to cook, but as quick as it was I assumed they pre-made orders. She poured the wine and took our food order. I asked to substitute the veggie and was told there are no substitutions. Okay, fine. Five minutes later our food was at the table. The veggie and risotto was luke warm but both of our fish was piping hot. My guess? They pre-made the risotto and veggie and only made the fish to order. Hence the no substitutions. They can't possibly handle a substitution when they are going buffet style back there!! We ordered after dinner drinks and a dessert and when we were finished, it had only been 30 minutes. All of the food was really good, albeit luke warm (besides the fish). For the price? I want hot and made to order. Sorry, but if you charge $25 a plate I want hot risotto and a hot veggie that wasn't just slopped out of the buffet. Thumbs down. If I were to go again, it was most certainly not be on a busy night, lets see if that Chef can actually cook!!!
