This is basic burger and fish and chips place. Service was good but flies were abundant and no real atmosphere I tried several menu items including the potato chip nachos which were ok. The wings weren't bad but the cheese steak was inedible. A few people in my party got fish and chips which looked ok. Seems like good place for pint but not sure the food is worth it. Prices are very reasonable thou

Stumbled upon the Red Horse Tavern while I was wandering down Washington street in Middleburg. It looked pretty busy so I thought that was a good sign. There is lots of outdoor seating. The inside is set up like a bar (hence the name tavern) with bar seating, some tables in the main bar area, and seating in the annex room off the bar. There was a wait to sit outside so my friend and I sat in the annex room. There was no AC. The menu was pretty standard for a bar menu so I wasn't expecting much to begin with. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich ($9.50) and my friend had the fish and chips. The service was painfully slow and food was mediocre at best. My friend had to chase the waiter down to pay the bill and the room we were sitting in was very stuffy. I don't think I'll be coming back to this place - I would rather try something else in the vicinity.

My wife and I came here with another couple last night for dinner and drinks. So glad we did! I don't really understand the negative reviews I see on here except to guess that those are the "stick-up-their-butt" people we were trying to avoid by coming here. I researched a lot of the places to eat and drink in town and found that most places seemed really pretentious. This place didn't look to be that way and it wasn't. We loved it and will be back. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with smiles and great service. The waiter/bartender was right on top of things getting us set up with drinks and appetizers. We were never waiting on them to get to us, and we never lost their attention even though we were so busy talking that we were extremely slow with ordering. Quite simply, the service could not have been better. The food was great! Was it fine dining? No. But then again, we're not the kind of idiots expecting to get a 5 star meal at a place that is a "tavern". The food was really good. The potato nachos were a great appetizer! I had the buffalo chicken wrap and it was really tasty. Everybody enjoyed the food. The drinks were coning out as fast as we could put them down. There was never an empty glass. The band playing last night (Sol Roots) was really good! Perfect level to entertain, yet you could still have a conversation at your table. I tend to be critical on bands since I am a musician, I enjoyed the entertainment. We don't live in Middleburg, we're about 40 minutes away, but we will be back! We really liked the place and can't wait to try out their patio seating once it gets warmer. For all the people with those sticks up your butt, there are plenty of places for you in town. Leave this place for those of us who are trying to avoid you.

The service was terrible. NONE of their staff greeted us and it took them ten minutes until someone brought us a menu. NONE of the staff smiled. They had to have been the worst attitudes I have ever seen in a wait staff. The food was like cafeteria food except greasier. Please don't waste your time with this place, learn from our mistake!!!!!

Nice spot for lunch or dinner after work. I didn't have any drinks but it looks like a good place for happy hour after work. There's plenty of room for seating outdoors ( when it actually gets warm) and inside. I tried the fish and chips and was a little nervous because in the past this dish can be a bit greasy but it was very good! I'm looking forward to returning and actually having a drink.

After an amazing dinner at The French Hound, we attempted to grab drinks at Red Fox Inn but found that it was closed for the evening. We walked over to Red Horse Tavern to grab a drink. The bar seemed to be limitly stocked but surprisingly carried things like blueberry stoli and jameson (the liquor of choice for the night.) This place is exteremely casual and laid back. We sat outside on the patio to chat which was relaxing. The service was nice and fast, considering the small bar seemed somewhat full and there was only one bartender. Wouldnt mind coming back.

Good service, good food, I had the steak sandwich with fries and it was the perfect portion size. Prices are reasonable. We walked around middle burg and lots of the restaurants were closed and the open ones were a bit pretentious. The Red Horse Tavern was down to earth and much more accessible.

So it's one of those moments that I wish I could take back. The one time I did not check Yelp! reviews I ended up here and all I have to say is, "Awful" with a capital A. I was walking down the main street when I decided to walk in with a part of 3. There was no energy. The dining room was dark and dull. We looked at the menu and it looked ok for a quick bite. The waiting staff looked frantic and inhospitable. It also looked like a place that could use John Taffer from the tv show "Bar Rescue". I certainly don't want to be rude but the staff not only looked uncaring, their clothes and appearance was just down right dirty and unappealing. I understand they are working at a greasy restaurant but I have seen more polished staff at the McDonalds and Chik Fila. We placed the order for drinks and appetizer (Potato Nachos) and because we were hungry we also ordered the food. (Irish Burger, Salad, Chilli, Soup) The service was awful and the uncaring attitude was so visible that at one point we looked at each other and said, "Should we just leave?" but I felt guilty since the order was already in. The Nachos showed up and it was tolerable with a few burnt chips. When you are hungry, you will put up with a lot. When the food showed up and I took my first bite of the burger, it was simply horrible. The beef not only tasted bad it tasted like it's expired or old. The egg on the top was uncooked. The soup was just as horrible. I asked for the check and we left to have dinner at a different place. I haven never felt so bad for not checking the reviews and it clearly cost me a pretty penny.

Food is good, beer is cold, and place is warm and cozy, just like Middleburg, VA. Good service.

Very basic bar/tavern at a prime location with outdoor seating. Most people were attracted to the outdoor seating. One friend told us that it was interesting to watch the vintage vehicles drove through the city. The table we wanted had wet chairs and we wanted to see if there was a cloth to wipe the chairs. We went inside it was dark and there were hardly any servers. We told the bartender, he looked confused but he promptly came out and picked up a cloth to dry the chairs. I had a chicken burrito with salsa and avocado, I took the one half it did not have avocado, it turned all of the avocado was in the other half. The burrito was average the chicken was too dry and i had to chew for awhile. The server was nice though! Overall, the tavern looked better than it really was.

They let dogs into the patio area. So you have to be ready for that. The food was mediocre to bad. My husband said his Reuben sandwich was the worst. Service WITHOUT a smile. The wait staff seemed pissed we were even there. And it took forever to get the food! See if you can find another place to eat. Fine place to hang out and drink. I think they allow smoking.

  • Kelly F.

Manager was rude and told me that he "needed" to see my I.D after server already checked my I.D and was served wine. I was insulted to be asked twice to show my I.D because of his disbelief that I was of legal drinking age. I'm 27! It is nice to dine outside on a sunny day but I have dined here twice before and service is always slow and inattentive.

  • Beth C.

Food was good. The atmosphere was not. It is a shame that they haven't capitalized on the historic property and the ambience of the town in the tavern. 2 groups of customers stopped in and promptly left. The staff was very unconcerned about lost business.

What a gem of a spot! I have to admit, I was a little skeptical not based on appearance but because it looks like your local watering hole and we are out on valentines day! Turned out, the place is perfect! The sauv blanc is going down well, the food is great (tavern food, nothing frou frou) we have wings and delicious homemade chips, and everyone is very friendly from the bartenders to the other people at the bar. We will be back!

Basic, good food. Decent prices. Very friendly service. A couple of nice IPAs and craft beers on tap. Decent list of wines by the glass. Nice patio with umbrellas. Dogs welcome on the patio. It's not fancy; just happy and good.

This is a home town establishment. Great service, tasty food. The bartender Brendon was great! Our waitress Anthea was friendly and attentive. The tavern is small and they gave tables outside. I would definitely visit this place again.

Great place to watch the Super Bowl. Food was pretty good but not superb. It is unpretentious and that is hard to find in Middleburg.

Service was good, no complaints there but the food tasted just okay; nothing special at all unfortunately.

  • Shamun M.

I asked for an IPA and the server brought a Pale Ale. I ordered the Mussels, which includes a nice broth/sauce. But the server only brought a knife and fork, (NO spoon). Lastly, same story when I ordered dessert. They brought a fork, instead of a spoon. When I did ask for spoons for my date and I, they brought soup spoons. Really? One redeeming factor - I was hungry so the food tasted good. Red Horse tavern - EPIC Fail.

Cheap greasy food. It's basically the McDonalds of Middleburg. And the joint needs a renovation, or some maintenance. Maybe a coat of paint, like five years ago. But they serve Guinness on tap, so there's that.

Great food, great entertaining service. Yummy beers. They were great with accommodating our party of 7 on a Sunday. Highly recommended!

Not sure why this little place doesn't get better reviews. Smack dab in the middle of Middleburg and apparently primarily popular with locals however my friend and I did not feel out of place. Everyone was friendly and service was attentive. Selection was good and portions were generous. Nice bartenders and we split an appetizer sampler which was plenty for 2. Will return. Enjoyed meeting everybody!

It smells like a dirty bar. As soon as you walk in say good bye to your appetite. We actually did not eat here because we were mocked by the bartender for not knowing seating protocol. Once we we decided to leave due to rude service, we went to Market Salamander which was delicious. We passed the bar as we were walking back to our car and the same rude bartender asked us in a condescending voice: "Did you find what you were looking for?" He was a brunette bearded man.

What the..... It was freezing cold and we decided to go in here last minute. I couldn't deal with the cold outside anymore! After sitting down and looking around, I realized we had made a very bad decision! The seats are all worn out and I could see inside the kitchen, and it didn't look so clean. The service was okay. And the food was not that great. I won't be going back. How hard can it be to just buy new chairs and get some lightbulbs up in there? And maybe tell the staff to clean themselves up just a bit.

  • Jimmy R.

It's a nice place to grab a drink, especially if it's nice outside. Their outdoor patio area is nice. We've stopped there several times after our motorcycle ride. The food is not so great, and the service is horrible. Checkups by the wait staff are far and few between.

Middleburg needs more restaurants. The Red Horse Tavern was one of the few places open last Saturday night, so we thought we'd give it a try despite the poor reviews. We should have kept driving. Service was bad, the food mediocre, at best. I ordered the white chili. I can't tell you how it tasted, because I never got it. First they tried to give me french onion soup. Then they withdrew this and brought out our entrees. I thought they'd forgotten the chili, but the server then brings out regular chili. While we're eating our entrees, of course. The steak and cheese sandwich was probably slightly below the quality you'd get at Subway. The servers were confused and distracted. Stay away.

Middleburg is a quaint town. Stopped for lunch before our B&B Open House Self-Tour. Liked the outdoor patio setting. Ordered the Chicken Gyro from the specials list with a side salad. BF ordered only the chili since he ate a late breakfast. Food took about 15 minutes to arrive. His chili bowl was huge with lots of beans and ground beef. My gyro was also pretty big and salad was simple with lettuce, tomatoes, and shredded carrots. The pita was cold and hard. Very difficult to eat with hands so I tried to cut it with a knife. Disaster since the whole thing fell apart. Too much lettuce and the glop of tzasiki sauce was tasteless. I picked at the dried chicken and lettuce. Unmemorable meal. Wished I went to Market Salamander instead for their excellent sandwiches.

Food was fine, nothing exceptional. Servers are very friendly and helpful. Nothing to set the food apart, typical street cafe food. I had blackened shrimp over spinach salad and it was fresh and taSty. He had the Cuban sandwich, a little dry.

Was visiting the town of Middlesburg with friends. After a day of shopping we decided to stop in and have a drink. What a mistake! First, our waiter/bartender came over and we were all smiles but they changed very quickly. We ordered drinks and we were asked if we had been visiting a winery all day and should we even be drinking. Apparently smiling and laughing is not allowed. Might imply your wasted. This 20 something year old was extemely rude. I'm old enough to be his mom. He seemed irritated that we were even there. I wish I would have just walked out. This guy shouldn't even be waiting on people. Needless to say we had 1 drink and left. I won't be back.

I've been here twice with my wife. The food is good, the prices are reasonable. I want to give it 4 stars, for menu variety, food quality, terrific location, great atmosphere - BUT - I'm sorry, there's no excuse for scores of flies all over the tables. The kids working there are more interested in the game and the waitress too preoccupied with her boyfriend to keep the place clean. They DO wipe down the tables, so I can only surmise that the rags are used all day or maybe they don't use any cleaner.. We walked around the area and looked at the other restaurants' outdoor tables and we didn't see anything like it. Maybe install a fly trap - but please - DO SOMETHING!

How is this place staying in business!!!??? We were a party of 4 and wanted to sit outside to enjoy beautiful Middleburg. The sign upon entry to the patio said "Seat Yourself." There were two 2 tops against a wall so we pushed them together to make room for 4, keeping them against the wall. In less than a minute the waiter, (we later learned his name was Brad) came out and gave us a very dirty look. My daughter said to him, "We moved these tables to seat 4. Can we not do that?" He rudely put his hands up in the air and said, "Well you already did!!" The 2 people at the table beside us kindly offered to switch tables with us and made a comment about the waiter's behavior. The very kind and helpful bus boy/ food runner told us that pushing the tables together was not allowed because it interfered with the flow of traffic and as soon as another table became available, they would move us. That could have been stated in a nice way from the beginning. After that, we were ignored. Nobody offered us drinks or food, even though we were given menus. 10 minutes later we gave a drink order, then we were moved to a vacant table where we were ignored again. Probably another 10-15 minutes passed when rude Brad came to get our dinner order. My medium rare burger was a well done hockey puck. Fries were great. Beer was served in the bottle with no glass. Nobody ever came by the table to ask if food was prepared OK. As we left, my daughter's friend brought her water with her since it was in a disposable cup. When we got to the car, she was horrified to learn that there was a wad of mucus in it. This place should be shut down! The one star is for the bus boy and fries and that's being generous.

Very inhospitable, rude bar full of locals who have no interest in tourist business. Odd for a touristy town.

Went here for dinner last night. The first star is for a very nice patio, the second is for the beers that arrived quickly. The missing three stars are for the TERRIBLE food, 45 minute wait for said food, and rude service. If I ever go here again, it will only be for drinks.

Been a fan of this place since I moved into Middleburg back in 2000. It's small on the inside but it makes up for it with its huge outside patio which is dog-friendly! You can shoot pool upstairs or sit downstairs & enjoy a drink while watching TV on their tiny screen. It's a great & friendly atmosphere. Perfect "bar food".

If I could give less than 1 star I would. Unless you have no other options - do not eat here. I got the "shepherds pie" which was not only vastly over salted but you could tell had been microwaved - the cheese on top had been microwaved burnt on. I'm not a picky eater but I could not stomach it. It was served with a large white tasteless cold hoagie roll. My husband had fish and chips - it didnt taste fresh and was very oily. The staff was slow and rude. We waited over 15 mins to get our order taken. I took one sip of my husbands beer and the bar tender marched over and rudely demanded "if you're drinking, I need to see ID." It's the law and I have no problem and At 28 I do look young but c'mon, at least be courteous about it. Odds are a married woman out late with her husband is not trying to sneak a drink wide open in a restaurant. When he saw that I was in fact over drinking age he just handed my ID back and stomped off. I've never been treated like a criminal in a restaurant. Avoid this place at all costs - I'm not sure how you serve food that terrible and stay open.

Red Horse, not to be confused with Red Fox, is one of the of the few restaurants in Middelburg that doesn't take reservations. This is fine because they seemed to have plenty of seating when I walked in. And we didn't think far enough ahead to make reservations at one of the other establishments in town. I was early to meet my group so I hung out at the bar and had a beer. It was early for Middleburg lunch rush, but it was a very nice day for January. I think all of the problems we encountered at this place hinged on the fact that they were severely understaffed and that a lot of patrons wanted to sit on the porch. I counted only three servers and one was underage so he was unable to help us with our beer selections. Everything took forever. We were ready to order food by the time the waitress came around to take our drink order. Then she told us she couldn't put our food order in while she was taking our drink order. Again, they were understaffed. It was not like the wait staff was not friendly and hard working, there just weren't enough of 'em. I ordered the Glenwood wrap which was fine. I thought maybe it would come with carved turkey rather than deli meat, but it was ok. I requested no tomatoes and they got that correct. Others in my group seemed happy with their meals. HOWEVER, one of our fish n' chips orders got separated from our order and was delivered to a woman at the bar (who was a friend of one of the employees) so my friend had to wait another 20 minutes for her food while the rest of us were devouring ours. We ordered desserts which came out pretty quickly. The Reese's PB Pie was very good, although I doubt it was made in house. It seems that management has issues keeping this restaurant well-staffed. Without all the endless waiting I could have given the Red Horse another star.

I tried to go here yesterday (Holiday weekend Sunday) at around 2:30. There were empty tables on the patio and a bunch of clusters of people just standing around. It was difficult to tell if they were waiting for a table or just loitering. I spotted an empty table for two and tried to coax my boyfriend over to it and he said we should wait to be seated. Since there is no sign and no hostess stand it was really difficult to know what to do when you get there. A waiter was walking by and I asked if we could sit at the empty table. His response was "I think there might be a waiting list". So we go inside to find the "list". We literally stood blocking the front entrance because the inside was so small and cluttered there was no where else to go. We stood there for at least 12 minutes with at least 20 pass by's from various wait staff. Not one person acknowledged our existence. Not one. It left me feeling ignored and unloved. I was simmering in angst and told me boyfriend we had to get out of there before I blew a fuse. We drove over to Anthony's in Marshall where we were acknowledged and fed fabulous food. Do not waste your time here. They do not care about you.

Cute little place, though nothing special and they can do with upgrading their restrooms, but a good place to grab a cold beer nontheless. I went in here after some antique shopping and I'm glad I did.

I've been here a number of times after I've finished off a day hiking in Sky Meadows, and it's been pretty consistent-- which is to say that it's filled to the brim with bikers on the weekends, from opening til' closing. They're not 1%er types, but mostly weekend riders with expensive jobs and expensive bikes-- so you're probably not going to get caught in the middle of a gang war, but those types of scuffles and dust-ups are what makes actual biker bars fun to go to. Instead, this is a hangout for a bunch of people undergoing mid-life crises. Why am I bringing this up instead of talking about the establishment? Bars are defined by their clientele. You really can go anywhere to get a glass of overpriced American adjunct lager, so the primary criteria for determining where to get said beer is the setting in which you'll be punishing your liver. I can't say much about the crowds during the week. Food is standard bar food, beer selection is average. I just find myself impossible to source any reason to care about Red Horse Tavern, which is probably why I stopped dropping in two years ago. Meh.

Large menu with 8-10 salads, sandwiches, wraps, great apps. & more. We had a lovely lunch outside on the patio where dogs are welcome. Service was good and my Greek salad was amazing. Very fresh with lots of feta. There are two levels of outside dining with colorful umbrellas. It's a great spot, right in town, and has a laid back feel. Perfect spot to sip and people watch.

Great place to stop in for a beer or cold ice tea when out enjoying the day on a motorcycle ride. On nice weekends there are usually lots of bikes parked in the front. Food is good as well and the wait staff are friendly and attentive. The outside patio area is a great place to meet new people and strike up a conversation.

I have been eating and drinking at the Red Horse Tavern for a little over a year now. My overall experiences here are quite good- the food is dependable, the drinks are what you expect. There's someone here that cares about running a down to earth Tavern well. Thankfully to me, this isn't a TGI McForkadoodles. When I sit down for some extra hot chicken wings and a Stella, I don't have some waiter with 17 pieces of flair flopping into the seat next to me asking if I want some jalapeño poppers too. Sometimes low-key good service is the way to go. I called the food dependable. This isn't some back-handed insult as I quite like the food here. But getting it right on a regular basis is something a lot of restaurants can't seem to handle. If you need an unpretentious, relaxed atmosphere for a beer and a burger, check this place out. The patio on a nice day is unbeatable.

The Red Horse is one of the best places to eat in Middleburg. The service is is excellent and always quick and cheery. The atmosphere is relaxing and home feeling. The food is always good and served hot and fresh. You need to try their nachos and chicken wings they are the best I have had anywhere. On the weekend there is always a great band playing inside if you just want to stop by relax and have a drink and a snack. I highly recommend The Horse 10 Stars in my book. Way to go !

This is a great place to stop in if your cruising around NoVa wine country. They have a nice deck with many tables & chairs, very casual. Inside they have an eight stool bar with maybe a half dozen tables. It's a popular stop for the Harley crowd. Enjoy a cold one and watch the football game on their plasma; Redskins fans only. If you have a group of 10 or so you can reserve the party room and have a plasma all to yourself.

Awesome place, staff is very friendly, service was great, food was outstanding. 4 adults and 3 children and every meal was outstanding. Loved the Salad with flank steak, actually went back the next day to have it again. Great place. The homemade potato chips are the best in the USA....

Are you kidding!! How this place shouldn't even get 1 star, the waitress couldn't even remember to bring my wife a glass of wine and when our food arrived my burger had the wrong cheese the waitress disappeared so I took it back inside, a few minutes later same burger arrives with some blue cheese dumped on top of it and some day old over cooked bacon.. Needless to say I sent it back; my wife shrimp salad sandwich was OK even though she had to peel some of them herself!! Nice place to stop for a beer but don't eat here, it's gone downhill over the past year.

I really really want to like this place. I really want to write it a good review. Like other writers said, it has a great location if you are in or near Middleburg. It had an awesome deck and patio area, and it just looked like it should be a perfect place to spend an evening. For me though, I think there were just too many misses to give it a more positive review. We sat down for dinner around 6:15 PM on a Friday night. It looked comfortably crowded but not overwhelmed and we took that as a good sign. There was a table out front and the evening was lovely and so we went for it. A server took a few minutes to come over but since it was seat yourself, I wasn't particularly bothered by that. He was friendly enough, and within a reasonable amount of time we placed our drink order. What bothered us was that it was so slow from there. After we placed our order the server just disappeared. No refills, no "hey can I get you another beer?" he was either inside or on the other side of the patio but never really close enough so that I felt like we were being checked on or could even discreetly try to get his or another server's attention. The food when it finally arrived was hit or miss. We had ordered chicken wings, a steak salad, and a burger all to split. We were pretty hungry, and we kept looking around to get our wings, but again not being able to grab anyone we couldn't ask. As it turns out they were served with our meal rather than as an appetizer as it had been intended. Disappointing. They were a bit on the over fried side, and the garlic spicy sauce or whatever they called it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. The sauce could have been personal preference thing, but over fried is still over fried. The burger was well done and not medium as we had ordered it, but we were too hungry to send it back. I will say the meat was seasoned well and we really enjoyed it. The salad was probably the star of the meal. It was fresh, it was nicely sized, and it was delicious. At the end of the meal they did clear the table fairly quickly. There was a promise to bring our bill and a little extra water. We waited over 10 minutes before having to go to the bar to get someone to print out our check. Again, just disappointing. I go back and forth on whether will try this place again. On a nice day, I know that their patio will call to me, but the other side of me says that the service just has to be better. I've worked briefly in a restaurant, and from what I could see they had enough people on staff to make this run smoothly. I think they might just need to put a little more thought and attention into their customer service to make a better experience for their guests.

This is a nice little pub along Rt 50, right in the middle of town. It was a bit chilly out to be sitting on the patio, which is too bad because it looks like it would be a great place to sit with a beer and some grub. The food was fine, your standard bar fare, and the service was friendly enough. If I'm passing through on a nice day, I'd be willing to stop by again.

Food was great. We had the California Cobb Salad. They do not offer any organic options. Server (male) was cold attitude from the start but the guy going around filling drinks was nice. They didn't hound us as a friend and I were catching up for a while. They refilled our drinks often which was nice. We sat outside. I would go back however expect an server with attitude but look beyond that and kick back and enjoy yourself and company. Noticed they have bands on the weekends. Might check that out but have my husband deal with the wait staff.

[Note: I originally wrote this in May of 2009, but since I could only save it as a draft in the Yelp! iPhone app it was forgotten until 2011 when I finally visited the real website again! So some info may be out of date.] My wife & I stopped here on our way home from our first anniversary getaway in the mountains. After walking around Middleburg & reading some fellow Yelpers' reviews we decided to take advantage of the Red Horse Tavern's large patio since it was such a beautiful day. It was a cold beer kind of afternoon. I was disappointed they did not have any local brews but the import selection was decent enough. We shared the Potato Chip Nachos. The chips were nice & crispy with a slightly soft center. The cheese complimented them nicely - like cheese fries with less grease and more crunch. The salsa was obviously a mediocre food service brand which added nothing to the dish. The equally ubiquitous canned sliced jalopeños gave a little zing to the occasional chip but otherwise was as boring as the salsa. One bartender appeared to be the only server, except for a food runner. This did not give him time to be friendly but he did a very good job. I'd rather have my beers full & food hot than chit chat. The outside patio on a nice day is the real draw. Watching a lady try to parallel park across the street proved amusing as she drove up on the curb & hit the car in front of her twice. As other reviewers mentioned you'll likely have (yuppie) bikers pull up - we did. Also a surprising amount of tractor trailers drive past. The patio was marred only by the fact that smoking is permitted all over it. The patio is large enough for a non-smoking area so I'm surprised they don't have one as only one table had smokers when we were there. As of this writing there is a lot of construction going on next door; so if hammers banging bother you, go inside or come back when the work is done. Overall a nice bar for a cold beer and some salty chips on a beautiful day. The food quality is dwarfed by the establishments around it. But if you're looking for a cold brew & a quick snack we recommend it.

Very good food. Great place to have lunch went walking around town. The burgers and sandwhiches are good as well as the salad i had.

The service was horrendous. By far the worse we've experienced in the 2-1/2 years that we've lived in Virginia. The waiter could barely bother to open his mouth, let alone attend to our party of 6. He disappeared at least 4 times for no less than 15 mins at a time. When we finally got our meals, the food was very good and probably compensated for the bad service. But then he just left our tables cluttered with empty glasses and other items so we had to pile them up on the empty table next to us. The little room they put us in on the side was hot and stuffy with windows that did not open. But the worse part was the kingdom of flies who apparently ruled that room. I killed several but that didn't deter their resolve to terrorize our table. Flies are bad in a restaurant. Period. So would I go back? Maybe to the outside patio but certainly not the inside. grade = D-

It's a solid place to go in town. Food is bar food, so don't expect steaks, whipped butter and after dinner mints. You will however find a decent beer selection, good basic pub grub (burgers and wraps are the way to go) and some damn fine girly drinks. Several TVs inside are good for watching sports and the outside deck is great for watching the locals and weekend warriors on Harley's sporting their cheap leather and over weight wives. The service depends on the crowd as you can imagine......when it's packed with people expect to wait for your server and longer wait times for beverages and food. Again this isn't a "fine dining" establishment. If you want that head to the French Hound or somewhere similar. Be sure to give Sam a hug. He always needs one.

Ate there today for a impromptu dinner. No need for reservations; there will always be plenty of empty tables here. Great place to grab a beer and mingle with friends, but that really is it. The food is terrible, and the cleanliness is...well...it's basically a dive bar. Wouldn't recommend to anyone. Only go there for a beer or you're desperate for something resembling food.

Guy was rude and said they would be closing in an hour. An hour later a band was setting up and they were basically just getting started. Service was ok. All we had was a beer, probably would have had more but after trying to et his attention for 30 minutes we were both ready to just head home. It was a very unwelcoming setting. If your not one of there regulars, dont even bother trying to get good service or expect a friendly response back. I live in town, not sure I will go back. 2nd un impressive experience.

I give this place 3 stars for the bar. If the food wasn't so horrible, I would give the bar 4 stars. Beer is cheap, there's plenty on tap, and the bartenders are pros. If you want a drink, they'll build it up for you from scratch. No crappy mixers, or pre-mades. Good skills, and generous pours. I leave em good tips. But the food, the food , the food. People shovel this food, and it amazes me. Why don't they speak up??!! It's horrible. Salad with grilled chicken on top? It's old, hard, slightly sour, dry, and not even from the good part of the chicken. If it WAS from the good part of the white meat chicken, it's not any good any more. Oily chips. Everything full of bottled sauce and salty. The salad dressing taste like cough syrups. Ancient and slightly sour mussels. Everything tastes like freezer burn, or just old and soggy. YUK. The kitchen has no clue. But, again, it's a good bar for beer or spirits. TRUST YOUR BARTENDERS. ENJOY. STAY AWAY FROM THE GRUB.

Red Horse was okay. We came here for appetizers and dinner. It was nice to sit outside on the patio but the service was really slow. Friendly, but slow. And then, when we finally got our appetizers, our entrees came out almost immediately. The prices were good and the food was fine.

Our Friday night continued....leaving the Wolfe Tone Pub in Upperville. Heading down the road we decided to pop into Middleburg to see what was still open at 10 pm. Several folks were sitting outside at the Red Horse Tavern, so the car mosied on into the parking lot. We popped into the bar to grab a libation - Gin and Tonic, SoCo-Lime and a Star Hill Ale. There was a single musician belting out Reggae tunes to an audience of none as everyone was either outside or part of some form of "boy's" party upstairs. Bartender had nothing to say...including thanks, have a nice day, or kiss my ass. Oh well. Grabbed a table and chatted for a bit...started getting chilly and so we decided to head home. I didn't finish my drink...but it was good once I got home. Not the best place to hang...wasn't interested in even trying their food....certainly not a regular haunt for us!

The cheese fries with bacon were great. Thanks to the waitress who suggested I only get a "side" order of them with my cuban sandwich. The sandwich was very good....could have been heated just a little longer to make the ham hot. But the bread was toasted and the cheese was melted and it tasted very good on a cold day. Staff was all very friendly and attentative!

I come here less for the food than for the outdoor patio and the laid-back atmosphere. Burgers are a safe bet, as is the pulled pork sandwich. Fries are tasty and crisp. Great place to settle down for an hour or two with a cold beer and enjoy the afternoon. Dogs are welcome on the patio; when I was there with a giant German Shepherd, the waitress even brought him a bowl of water and a treat. This, despite the fact that he was literally half-covered in mud after a long trail ride and looked more like a wet rat than a well-behaved dog!! (In general, Middleburg is a very dog-friendly town... make sure you stop by the pet shop, Wylie Wagg, for treats!) On weekend afternoons in the summer, the patio and street parking out front often fills up with bikers, which can be interesting, but can also make it difficult to find an open table. Go early to stake out a table, or try your luck waiting for someone to leave! The patio is often open on warm spring/fall afternoons, which can be a good time to go as most of the summer crowds are gone.

My wife and I stopped out here on a Friday evening for a bite to eat. We'd heard good things about the place, and loved their outside patio seating. Well, at 6:30 on a Friday evening, we were asking a bit much to find a seat outside. It was packed! We ventured inside and grabbed a table. The bartender took care of us and the service was excellent. The food was about average, but we had no complaints. We'll definitely look forward to going here again...a little earlier so we can get patio seating!

After a long motorcycle ride in the surrounding area my husband and I stopped at this quaint tavern for a late dinner. The service was very good; the food was good also. I requested a few adjustments to my order which were happily taken and seemed to be no problem (not a normal reaction from servers). We will definitely eat here again!

I noticed the patio and people outside Red Horse while driving on my way to Winchester. I made a mental note to stop there for dinner on the way back home. My picky mom was skeptical after scanning the pub menu; I almost left, but my gut said stay. My gut feeling served me well. The weather was great, the patio seating was plentiful. We started with the Potato chip nachos... the taste of fresh potato chips was delicious! I will never look at nachos the same! (they have regular tortilla nachos or fresh cut /fried potato chip nachos... get the POTATO chip). The entrees came out just as we were licking the nachos off the plate...great timing. I got the fish n chips and my mom got the grilled chicken sandwich. The fish was tasty and fresh but a tad greasy (but hey what do you expect with fish n chips). The "chips" were very good french fries (fresh cut I believe) that tasted great with the remoulade sauce. The tiny side of house made cole slaw left me wanting more. My mom, a bit more relaxed after the appetizer but still wary, cut her chicken sandwich in half (she didn't want to waste it in case she didn't like it). Her sandwich came with run of the mill potato chips, a downer especially after you've had the hot fresh kind earlier. She opted for the horseradish mayo instead of the BBQ sauce. The sandwich was fantastic. The chicken breast was cooked well but not dry at all, excellent seasoning, on fresh bread. Except for the bite she shared with me, mom finished off the whole sandwich in no time! The service was indeed friendly..perhaps too friendly. The times I needed my server he was chatting with other tables. I then remembered I was in small town Middleburg where people actually still communicate verbally; the service was just part of the charm of dining on main street. To quote my picky mom "I'd come back here again."

The Red Horse has been pretty good to me. Whether I'm stopping on a summer motorcycle trip for a burger and some beers, or dropping in with a cold on a wet fall day for some orange juice and chicken tenders (yes, I'm seven years old when I have a cold), or still again dropping by with friends for late drinks, nachos, and mussels, I haven't yet found the menu-item I don't like. And all at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.

The food was not too bad, when it finally showed up. Couldn't tell you about the nachos, as they never did. Absolutely the worst service I've had in any establishment in any of the cities I have traveled around the globe. The staff was discourteous, ineffective, and completely incapable of delivering on even the simplest request. When we raised issues, regarding the 30-minute delay on the nachos, they acted as if we had committed a major offense. I would not order a glass of water at this "tavern". The service was worth less than the four cent tip we left. Avoid even if you are dying of hunger or thirst, their service will finish the job.

Great place to sit out on the porch if it's a nice day after a long morning or riding. Very laid back and they have a margarita that is amazing! Must try.

The patio at Red Horse in Middleburg is a great place for languid conversations over beer & appetizers in the summertime. Typical pub fare; not fine dining or healthy food -- although last time, noted the bruschetta was a healthy, tasty option (and I think they drizzled authentic balsamic vinegar on top.) Whenever I've been here, there have been numerous Harleys parked in front (and once a flying motorcycle.) Bikers, locals, art/antique collectors, families and tourists share the space - taking in sunshine and conversations; pausing every so often...to watch the bikes roll through Rte 50, or the newcomers arrive on the patio.

We were planning to eat at a neighboring establishment, but they were closed and the Red Horse was right there ready to serve us. Sam is a great waiter, easily making a mod to the menu for me. Black bean soup was excellent and finished just as the entrees for all five our party arrived simultaneously. (Have you ever been the guy the cook forgot!) Food was tasty and reasonably priced. My first time in Middleburg. Red Horse will be the tavern of choice next time. Thanks.

Location is great. Outside patio is beautiful and full of people. Red Horse is a cool little small town pub. The one star rating comes entirely from the bad food and poor service.

Great patio and great food and seems to have something for everyone. The food has always been consistently good. Great beer selection on tap and is a favorite for weekend bikers since the restaurant is on the main drag. Service is sometimes inconsistent and you usually have to find your own table. This place has improved a lot in the last year or so and is worth it, if not to just sit on the porch with a drink and watch passersby.

I am visiting here from Colorado. I always LOVE to go to Middleburg for a stroll around the street's, looking in the quaint shops. It's also fun to check out the local restaurants. I agree that the patio is nice, but if you are expecting to belly up to the bar and feel welcome by the bartender don't think about going to this place. The bartender could barely be bother to say hello when we came in. He was too busy watching "John and Kate plus 8 on the huge TV, which was rather annoying. He was also more interested in eating his huge disgusting pile of nachos then even ask us what we wanted to order. It wasn't a very good experience. I have to say the chicken wings were good, but service is a part of the entire restaurant experience so it was just really so disappointing. I have heard that since there are not many places to go in Middleburg that no one cares about good service. What a shame.
