Hank's is providing the BBQ buffet for the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo today and the food was absolutely great! The pulled pork sandwich is fabulous! Thanks, Stacy!

Go with the dry ribs. I'm originally from the South and I have to say good Real BBQ is hard to come by in Northern VA. On our visit to Massanutten we found this place. My dry rub ribs were the best I've ever had. The brisket was fantastic as well! Highly recommend!

Hanks's claims on its outdoor sign to have the best ribs in town. They don't. Their ribs are overcooked and dried out. Fortunately, they were willing to swap out the overcooked rack of ribs for a delicious pork sandwich. The service was friendly and accommodating.

We discovered Hank's last year while at Massanutten. This year we've had four out of six dinners from Hank's. It is without a doubt the best place to eat around Massanutten.

Went there last week during my vacation. The people that have given this place high praises are either deprived of what really good bbq is, and I feel sorry for then, or maybe they have a new pitmaster (if there REALLY smoke their ribs), but my experience was NOT good at all. First of all, the waiter had no idea of their "local beers". He referred me to the menu, which just listed the beer names without descriptions. This assumes that you're familiar with the beers, which most first-timers wouldn't be. I ordered the sampler platter, which gave me some of their ribs (I chose "dry" meaning so sauce, brisket, and pilled pork). The portion was huge. The ribs had tons of rub sprinkled on, which I didn't understand, but had no smoke flavor, and were DRY. The brisket had no flavor and was a little tough. The pulled port was just ok. My wife and one daughter had the steak. It was cooked mid-rare as ordered, but was so tough, that they couldn't eat it. My son had the kid's rib meal, which were also dry, and I can't remember what my other daughter had. Total bill with tipped was $120.00 (I tipped well despite the food). The best part of the food was the bread and butter at the beginning.

We ate here after eating at their other restaurant for breakfast. The food was plentiful and delicious. I couldn't finish mine. The waitress was friendly and helpful, although she confused my husband when she asked if he wanted a glass of water with his beer! I asked for the sauce with the most kick, and the waitress suggested one sauce, which was good but not spicy, but my hubby said it was me...I like my food spicy, he said it was....The salad was fresh, just enough dressing ( on the side), tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, onions, all crispy. Creamy cole slaw comes with most entrees, plus a side. The desserts were yummy, had one even though I had to take most of my meal back to our vacation spot. (since I am now an adult I can have my desserts without finishing my meal!)

We visited this past weekend during our trip to Massanutten. The service was very good and the food was good as well. We had a couple kids meals, I tried the port BBQ and brisket, both of which were very good and my wife had the grilled Cesaer with chicken which should would get again. We would visit again if in the area.

Good food! Accidentally found Hank's today driving around and enjoyed the food and lunch service. We ordered dry rub pork ribs, Reuben sandwich, briskets, grilled Caesar salad, corn & clam chowder soup. We shared the large servings and all were good with the ribs as my favorite (best dry rub ribs I've had in a long time) & a just ok on the chowder from the wife. The mashed potato as a side was an extra yummy surprise. Our waitress was very good too. Will come back next time we're in the area.

Never again. The food was average I got grilled chicken and vegetables. The service was good also; But the reason I'm giving it such a horrible review was because my dad got the pulled pork and beef briscet and he was sick all night... He only had cereal for breakfast and a granola bar for lunch so it was obviously the dinner that got him sick. That was suppose to be thier signature meal too... So be careful!

I like craft beer, so I must say right off I was a little off put that the sigh outside said "5 local beers on tap" and they included the national chain brewers Coors and Blue Moon in that count. If felt like false advertising to the craft beer lovers who are new to the area...:-(. That said, the beers they had on tap were good and the wait staff were very friendly and supporting of each other. The food menu was very expansive with lots of options for Ribs, pulled port, etc....but reasonably priced. I would go there again, especially for happy hour where drinks and appetizers are nicely discounted.

The service was great but the food really was disappointing. I have had better bbq elsewhere.

Pretty nice place right outside of Massanutten Resort. It was a bistro atmosphere, with lots of meaty food. I had a simple chicken dish, and it was prepared well. Only faults are the oddly sized tables (waaaaay too small) and the waaaay to big hunk of cold bread they put on our table. It's a thing with me, bread should be nice and warm. Nice kids menu.

    Try the brisket!

I look forward to going here once a year. I've never been let down. Their smoked meats have a nice deep smokey flavor. Their "juniper sauce" is awesome. Recently had their corn clam chowder. Was delicious. Seasoned perfectly and actually contained chopped clams and corn. The tomato spinach bisque was also perfectly seasoned and refreshingly light. My compliments to the kitchen for not going nuts with butter, salt and cream with any of their soups. The pork is very smokey, so if you're a store-bought or crock pot fan, this will stun you. YOU WILL TASTE SMOKE. Also had their whiskey chicken sandwich recently. Was tender chicken breast. Not over cooked or over sauced and on a fresh, airy ciabatta style bread. Their mac and cheese was a great compliment to my sandwich. Was a bit rich and greasy, but that's what cheese is. Great place!

Been eating at Hanks since we moved to the area ten years ago. Love it. The quality of the food is consistently excellent, and the service is good. My favorites on the menu include the dry rub ribs, the Texas beef barbecue, and the southwestern clam and corn chowder. I am not a big fan of their pork barbecue, but my husband loves it. The beer selection is fair; I haven't tried their mixed drinks or hung out at the bar, so I cannot comment on those things. I highly recommend this restaurant for dining in or carry out. Great for families, too.

I've passed this place a few times on my travels but only ever eaten here once. It seems to be a very busy place on Friday and Saturday night for the elkton locals. I ate lunch here on a Saturday afternoon. I was extremely hungry so my eyes were bigger than my belly. I ordered the dry rub wings. They were very good flavor, but a little tough. The hanks BBQ sauce was sweet, too sweet for my NC vinegar based taste buds. I only chose to partake in a little of it on the ribs. I ate 2 ribs and the remainder made excellent leftovers. I was surprised to see a pretty trendy bar when I first walked in, although didn't partake,

  • Todd H.

Excellent local restaurant, the bbq and ribs are consistently always good and if you don't want bbq the ribeye and prime rib is amazing. Also the best clam chowder I've ever had and a very good selection of local craft beers.

  • Neal K.

I don't leave many reviews but this could have been the worst BBQ I've ever eaten. Pulled pork was a pile of mush. The Brisket was so fatty and consisted of all little bits from the bottom of the pan. The ribs were probably the best part of the meal and they were just mediocre. Cole slaw was not bad, the server was friendly and efficient and the decor was interesting. Our party left over more than half our food over and we were starving afterward. My 6 year old daughter says Log Cabin BBQ was better so we might try that next year.

    (1)
  • Kat S.

Food was mediocre, BBQ dishes were totally overwhelmingly smokey in flavor. Service wasn't bad overall. The bill for a family of 4 was $98, including 2 Killian beers. Probably would not return.

    (3)
  • Caryn T.

I'd rate this place as average. It seems quite clean, and the service was good. The food was just average, though. The green beans were obviously canned. The macaroni and cheese was bland. The brisket was a bit tough. Their BBQ sauce is just okay. The highlight of the meal was the warm, homemade bread. If you don't expect stellar food, you won't be disappointed. It's a-ight.

I really hate to be the downer review, but I really was in no way a fan of this place. People like lists, so here is my experience broken down. The good: 1. The pulled pork was quite good. Nice and smoky. 2. The bread seemed pretty good. 3. The Golden Cock Rub. Thats a ballsy name my friend, and I'll give you points for it. The bad. 1. Decor. Way too neat, modern, and sleek for a BBQ place. The floor looked rustic, but what is with the modern art flower vases, fish tank and blond oak furniture? This looks like a family restaurant!? Also, I can't say I appreciate advertisements for your other restaurants in my booth. 2. The sides. Bland mac and cheese. Boring beans, and the coleslaw was a slap in the face of cabbages everywhere! Why does coleslaw always have to look like the stuff served to me in my school lunch? 3. The Ribs. My lady got the wet ribs. I'm not sure what it was about them, but they just weren't that pleasant. They were really dry and the sauce just was not cutting it. I enjoyed them a bit more the next day , but they just seemed like they had been reheated one time to many or something. This may be due to an off night, so I'll reserve judgment. 4. The Sauces. I did not like a single one of the sauces. They tasted way too manufactured. The juniper sauce tasted like a weak Worcestershire sauce, and the others tasted store bought and cornstarchy. The sauce should be the pride of any BBQ place. It should be your statement to the world saying "I am the King of my craft" It is the signature of the artist. Instead, this sauce said to me "I am available for purchase at your local grocery store" Craft an excellent homemade sauce, put it in squeeze bottles and then bottle some and sell it. I certainly did not hate my meal. I enjoyed my pork sandwich immensely, but unless you're in the area anyway, I wouldn't recommend this place. Even then, stick with pulled pork and skip the sides.

I came here for dinner and it was okay. We started with the crabcake sliders. They were a little saltier than I would have liked them to be but they were full of crab meat and not fillers (like breadcrumbs). Their coleslaw is very fresh without too much mayo. I really liked it. I ordered the greensalad with grilled shrimp. Nothing special about the greens but the shrimp was cooked just right -- not rubbery and overcooked. My friend ordered the dry rub ribs and they were too dry for me. They fell off the bone and were flavorful but I like my ribs moist. The pecan pie was soft and gooey and yuuuummy. Service was excellent.

Delicious food, great service. Every appetizer looked fantastic & nachos were awesome. Whiskey BBQ sauce was perfect!

  • Nate K.

Dined with my family here during vacation. Overall, it was ok. I have had much better BBQ and much worse. Bottom line is that I wouldn't go back without trying the other BBQ place just down the street. -2 stars for the wet ribs, they were too dry, flavor wasn't spectacular. Funny since they were done in their signature sauce. -4 for the dry rub. -5 for the fresh bread! -2 for sides. We had Mac and cheese, coleslaw, potatoes, and salad. Salad wasn't that fresh. -2 for service. They didn't seem that busy, but our waitress wasn't able to keep our drinks full and attended to properly.

Really excellent BBQ here. I had the sampler - bbq pork and beef, and 5 bones of ribs. The ribs were just about perfect. Falling off the bone and not a speck of fat. I had the wet ribs but they're not drenched. Still a little dry, which is how I prefer them. The beef BBQ was great as well - a good mix of lean and fatty brisket with a deep smoke flavour and not too much sauce. (But they don't serve sliced lean brisket on its own, which is my favourite.) The pulled pork wasn't the best I've had, but still delicious. To my taste though it was a bit mushy and almost oversmoked... and I love the smoke taste, myself. They seem to make and sell their own variety of sauces, all of which were tasty. (Sweet habanero works well with the bbq if you want some extra spice!) Someone else at my table tried the gumbo, which was also extremely delicious. Some of the best I've had (though not perhaps the most authentic). Side dishes were predictable but well-prepared. Coleslaw, beans, fries, etc... I had the fries, which were nice, and even though I don't like coleslaw this one was pretty good. Greens-wise, their regular salad was fine. They also had a 'grilled caesar,' which sounded interesting and looked good, but I didn't get to try it. Cheap draft beer, and by far the best wine list I've ever seen at a BBQ joint! If you're looking for some smokey goodness in the area, you can't go too far wrong with Hank's.

the food is pretty good but the service was weird. its like they couldn't wait for all the patrons to leave. the waitress was not very nice & hovered over us ready to snatch our plates. the three stars is for the food.

  • Victor M.

Thank God I went here! I got the dry-run ribs and they were heaven. Even loved their fresh-baked bread, mac 'n' cheese, and coleslaw. I only wish I discovered this place way before I had to leave town.

My husband and I hired Hank's to cater our anniversary party of about 100 people. They did an EXCELLENT job! They arrived exactly on time, were able to set up without impeding on the party, were attentive while serving the buffet, cleaned up quickly, and even packaged our leftovers impressively. And, what was even better--the food was delicious! So many of our guests commented on how much they enjoyed the beef brisket, southwest chicken, mac and cheese, vegetarian baked beans, and peach cobbler with ice cream. I'm a vegetarian and Hank's was able to provide a lasagna for me and my few vegetarian friends which they kept to the side so that the meat-eaters wouldn't demolish it before we got to it. Overall an A+ experience!

Spicy shrimp was very good, though I would have preferred it to be cooked a little longer for a firmer texture. Sampler platter was perfect for dinner: dry rub ribs, brisket, pulled pork. BBQ sauce mixed with the pulled pork was a little sweet, but a spicier sauce was available on the table and was great. Ribs are marinated and smoked in something that gives them a very reddish tinge. Meat was very sweet and moist. Would have ordered the bourbon pecan pie if it didn't have chocolate chips in it. While not the best BBQ I've ever had, we walked out full and happily satisfied.

We had a good dinner at Hank's, enjoying their very large portion of baby back ribs. They we pretty good, and while I've had better, these are recommended. The baked beans were unusual but very good.

Walk into the bar where all the fun is and the decor is beautiful. Walk a few steps further into drab walls, an aquarium and wood walls - not so nice but with restaurant tables, chairs and booths. Now for the food. . .The BBQ sandwiches and plate are great. The coleslaw needs to decide on sweet or sour - in between, not so much! The beans are great and so is their salad. Nice and fresh. The prime rib which was their Thursday nite special was about 1/3 fat. The 10 ounce was plentiful and $18.99 (kinda high for a special). The best deals seem to be the 1/2 priced appetizers from 4-6 pm and dollar beers. Can't beat that! We'd go back but probably opt for the burgers or sandwiches or the BBQ pork plate (not the beef - it was really tough). The desserts are good but could be better. . .gave a couple of suggestions which waiter said to put on the comment card that he would provide with the bill but he never did. Oh well, their loss. The staff in the restaurant is far nicer than the staff in the bar - been to both places at least a dozen times so I can compare.

Great BBQ. I had the pulled pork sandwich, and had leftovers to take home with me. That was 1/2 pound of BBQ goodness! Waitstaff was friendly and attentive. Food arrived quickly. The Pecan Pie was delicious as well!

  • Tessa R.

We enjoyed the food here. We each had the triple play (appetizer) which consisted of 1 pulled pork, 1 brisket and 1 crab cake slider, they were all delicious (my fav was the pork and my husband's was the brisket) and it was a nice way to sample a few things. The Wings and fries were also very good! We plan to go back for brunch on Sunday!

The food was OK but not special and the service was the worst I've had in a long time. The waitress and her service was pathetic.

We've been here a couple times when staying at our nearby timeshare resort. I was a little disappointed this time. They have a decent wine list which is a surprise. The decor is nice. Clean. Service good. The waitress was actually annoyingly nice. To the point of being fake. But I'll take that any day over someone rude. Didn't like the cheese grits much. Think I'll stick to having them for breakfast. The " pulled" pork was chopped not pulled. There's a difference to me. Too spicey. The brisket was okay and the ribs very good. Very meaty and tender- falling off the bone. Though I was disappointed with the pulled pork I'd still say it's a must try if you're in the area. Almost forgot--LOVED the blondie brownie dessert...

My wife and I have driven by Hank's many times on our trips through the area and finally had time to try it out. I had the samplet platter my wife had the Gulf coast pasta. The bbq and grilled vegi's were top notch. My wife said her pasta was great and Hank's has some of the best cole slaw she has ever had.

  • Greg S.

We came here while staying at our timeshare in Massanutten. Nice clean place. Casual with good food. I got the BBQ combo...pulled pork, beef, & ribs for $18 and it was pretty good. I had my family of 6 with me and they all said it was just above average with some liking different parts of the meal more than others. 3 people had corn clam chowder and all said it was very flavorfull but the clams were a little tuff...only 1 said they would order it again. For starters, all thought the bread was a little dry. Appetizer was nachos and they were average.

    (3)
  • Joe J.

not the best BBQ ever, but very good. price isn't too bad.

    (4)
  • Tammy L.

I liked the beef barbecue, it was above average. My favorite part of my experience at this restaurant was the Brunswick stew. It had a nice smokey flavor and all the vegetables had absorbed the flavor of the stew. The meat was very tender and they gave me a big chunk of beef right in the middle of my bowl. After dinner, I thought I would be craving the stew later on, so I bought a container of it (they take out containers of the side dishes up front). I kind of wish I had bought 3 containers!

  • Harley G.

We went here the Thanksgiving buffet in 2010. Excellent food, good service, and a nice cozy atmosphere. It's out in the hills by the Massanutten Ski Resort, so don't expect anything fancy, but with great staff and great food, this place is a surefire win.

  • Liz B.

Amazing! Good service great BBQ and deserts. Ribs fall off the bone and desserts were to die for. Came on a Sunday for dinner. Definitely family friendly.

    (5)
  • James B.

Although definitely worth a visit, Hanks not super. Would have given it a 3.5 if I could. Beer selection is strong, and the ribs are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Service is good and they're very kid friendly.

    (4)
  • Gaea M.

Don't eat here, if you're expecting traditional barbecue or good food. The baked beans are actually bean soup containing kidney, pinto and Lima beans with some odd vinegar twist. The barbecue is so smokey because they clearly add too much smoke flavoring. Lastly the potato salad was too firm and lacked mustard, salt, and pepper. If you are looking for a good meal while staying at Massanutten, go to Romano's! It was our saving grace with its pizza and subs, after other bad meals in the area.

First... I do not like BBQ sauce nor do I eat beef. This is not the restaurant someone like me should go to. My daughter and husband, however, love both. My meal choices were limited. We had the crab dip. It was "good" but not great. I had the fried chicken tender salad. Eh. Daughter had "The Rachel" - from their lunch menu (even though it was dinner time). She LOVED it. I think it's the best sandwich she ever had. I hate roast beef and it looked good to me. Hubs had BBQ chicken ("Church chicken") and he raved about it. Son (8 yrs old) had ribs... he picked at them, but that is what he does. He complained they were too sweet... Hubs LOVED the ribs too. He said the sauce was not too sweet but kept talking about how meaty the ribs were. I was so tempted by the dessert menu I ordered the berry/pear cobbler to take home. Again, "eh". Everything I had scored low.... I think I am just not the right patron for that business. The atomosphere was very much like "Lone Star", except more authentic. Very casual, friendly. No crowd. FABULOUS service. Rachel was our server. I would recommend it if you are the BBQ lovin' type. If you're like me, go elsewhere. If you're really like me, you'll go with your family because if they love it, you're happy.

  • Jenny W.

Disappointing...my salad was wilted, and the vinaigrette...left a lot to be desired visually. My steak was ok, but could have used more seasoning. We also tried the chicken which had a good flavor and was moist. The 1/4 rack.of ribs we tried tasted like the were probably left over from the weekend. For dessert I had the chocolate pecan pie...so so but also disappointing. We most likely will not return

Great restaurant! We are staying at Massanutten and were hoping to find decent restaurants off of the resort. Needless to say we went to Hank's 3 times the week we were here. Great environment, family friendly and their employees are positively wonderful! The Bourbon chocolate chip pecan pie is a must!

Wonderful food! The server Amber was amazing! It's a must for bbq! The brisket is why I keep going back! Excellent beer as well!!!!!!!!!!!!

Came to dinner with another family. Ambiance was nice and low key. Very friendly staff and absolutely great service. Food - appetizer -Buffalo shrimp, which unfortunately still had legs on it as a battered and dip dish, that was totally unexpected. Maybe the tail but legs!? Spicy and nothing special really. I ordered the half chicken with dry rub and let me tell you, I usually douse my chicken in sauce and do not care for the skin BUT the skin was the best part, unfortunately. The chicken tended to be dry all over. The beans and cole slaw were meh... Hubby ordered the ribs with the dry rub and the meat fell off the bone. I sampled some of the sauces but they are mainly vinegar based if that is what you are into. However, the prices were not bad. $85 for 3 adults and 1 kid including the house drink.

Gyzel(sp) was our server (she was awesome!!) and we had a blast!! The food was fresh, fast, and wonderful. Can't wait to go back to this slightly hidden gym!!

Got the "ribs for 2" special with my brother. The ribs were well-seasoned and quite tender--they separated from the bone very easily and were delicious. The sides were fine, but nothing amazing. The wait staff was very nice and the prices seemed reasonable. This place is certainly worth the drive.

    (4)
  • Terry H.

Overpriced barbecue house! I got the beef barbecue and pork barbecue. They were anything but exceptional. For less than half the price I can go to the COOK OUT and get a far superior sandwich. My wife and I had waited a long time to try this place. It was quite disappointing when we finally got to eat there. Our dogs enjoyed the leftovers.

  • John M.

Seems like it could be a better place than we experienced, and we'll probably try it again. This time, our first visit, I found the portions to be smaller than expected, and the bbq sauce seemed to have been used somewhat sparingly and was on the "eh, nothing really special" side. The ribs we got were cooked to perfection, but the flavor of the meat seemed a bit lacking. They do have some nice looking beers on tap, and will sell you a growler filled with your favorite.

  • Joseph G.

My wife and I went here on our vacation and loved it. The service was great and food was even better. I had the whiskey BBQ ribs and the meat just fell off the bone. They were perfect. My wife had the bourbon sirloin which was cooked to perfection and a side of they're BBQ pork. Which I enjoyed also. I highly recommend this to anyone in the area wanting some great food at a decent price.

  • Joe J.

The ribs were truly falling off the bone and were delicious. My seven and ten year old boys loved their food and being from North Carolina, they know good BBQ. Prices were quite reasonable as well. Great service too. Very pleasant surprise.

Caribbean grouper in a smokehouse with watermelon salsa? Good. My wife got a sampler of Texas beef and baby back ribs. The beef was vinegar based and the ribs were tomato based. Both smoked well. A nice smokehouse decor. I highly recommend.

The food was good but maybe just a little dry. The service needs MAJOR work. The young woman/teenager was kinda snotty and not very helpful. She needs better training for sure. Would visit again though.

Outstanding barbeque here in the mountains of Virginia. Excellent brisket and pulled pork. Portions were generous and prices fair.

Awesome food! We were staying at Massanutten resort and gave it a shot. We ended up eating there 3 times for dinner during our stay. My mom had the crab cake dinner and said it was the best she's ever had. I had the Gulf Coast Pasta.....twice.....soooo good. Loved this place :)

  • Christina E.

The food was great, pleasant, atmosphere, and fair pricing. Our waitress was also friendly and knowledgable. We were recommended by someone to try the cheese dip and it was a great recommendation. I had the BBQ sampler and loved it. I had the ribs with dry rub and my friends had orange chipotle which they also enjoyed. They didn't enjoy the Mac and cheese that much and also the fried chicken salad was literally a salad with chicken tenders on top. Not too impressive. Everything else was great.

  • Michael M.

Stopped in for lunch one day with friends. Amongst us, we ordered the Brunswick Stew (good), Chicken Wings and Salad, and I had Ribs (1/4 size) and Fries... The portions were perfect. The ribs were some of the best I've ever had. Perfect smoke ring, pink meat, and topped with the Whiskey BBQ sauce, which was excellent. Now, maybe my opinion is different, because I'm from Michigan... but I know I've never had ribs THIS good back up home. I may have to come back down just to have a full rack of these ribs...

  • Karri V.

Overall, this place was good. The flavors were all pretty much on point but I think some of their cook times need adjusted. First off, the shrimp and grits appetizer was very tasty. Growing up in a southern, coastal town I know all about shrimp and grits and I have to say their shrimp was cooked perfectly and the flavor was exceptional. We also got the Brunswick Stew which had a great consistency but was very, very strong. Next, we got the ribs for two which came with salad, cole slaw and two sides; cole slaw was good but sweet, fries were tasty and mac and cheese was really good. The ribs were okay but definitely could have been better. The flavor was good (we got the whiskey BBQ) but they were super dry. The ends were basically inedible. I think we would possibly go here again if we come back to the area but would probably not get the ribs or stew. Also, be aware that this place is pretty pricey compared to all the other places around. Had the ribs been better I probably would feel differently.

OMG!!!! I am a time share owner at Massanutten so Hanks is close by. That said I have not visited this place in years. I ordered the Texas brisket with sweet potato fries. The brisket was outstanding and to top that I had bourbon flavored chocolate chip pecan pie served warm and topped with vanilla ice cream. Hanks is now my favorite restaurant when in the area and highly recommend it. The waitress was very friendly and treated me well. Place was clean and played country music to get you in the mood.

Delicious BBQ. Was perfect for what we were looking for. The chicken fried steak was moist yet crispy on the outside. The mashed potatoes were creamy, still with some chunks of potato and skin. We took advantage of the half price appetizers and ordered the whisky bbq ribs and quesadillas. Both were very delicious. The ribs were fall of the bone, but not so well done that they just fell apart. The still had some chew to them. The smoke ring was apparent and the sauce was perfect. The brisket was sliced and cooked to perfection. The grits were cheesy, not too salty. My only complaint was that the cole slaw needed a bit more acid. The service was a bit slow tonight but I heard that they were short staffed. Might come back tomorrow to partake in their all-u-can-eat pork and beef BBQ for $19.99!

Quiet with nice decor. Small dining room and bar. Prices were a bit above average for the portions. Wonderful staff that was very nice. I got the double whammy sandwich which was filling but a bit over priced at $13 for a sandwich and fries. Also got the Incredible Hank drink. Good with quite a kick for only $10 plus you get to keep the glass. Overall a nice place with a nice experience.

I went there because it was on the time share tv as a recommended place. The service was ok, but the BBQ was not what I expected. It did not taste like any BBQ I am used too. The price was very expensive for BBQ. I would not recommend this place as one who eats out a lot.

While traveling in the south, we love barbecue. We found it at Hank's. We visited on a Sunday afternoon after church and had a very sweet waitress, Jessica. She was helpful and attentive. We enjoyed the food which consisted of homemade bread, salad, cheesy Mac and cheese, ribs, BBQ pork and brisket and potato salad. The meal was plentiful and we left stuffed to the gills.

We stopped in here during our stay at Massanutten. The ribs were pretty good (dry rub) and were fall off the bone. The pork sandwich was also decent with a good level of smoke and Hank's sauce. The brisket was disappointing...it was not tender enough and a super small portion. (Essentially 2 slices on a bun.) Service was friendly and helpful.

Really cool artsy environment. Great menu and drink selections. Friendly and courteous staff. A nice break from the surrounding touristy BS.

Most horrible experience ever!!! We were seated and forgotten! After 20 minutes of waiting for a server we decided to go else where. I can understand if they were crowded but there was 3 other tables only. We will never go back. Gave 1 star only because you have to

My wife doesn't eat red meat very often...so imagine my surprise when she said, "Honey, you know you and Jacob can't drive by BBQ joints and Smokehouses all vacation long without getting some, let's go for lunch." Gotta love that woman. Jacob had a pulled pork sandwich, NC style, and being from Eastern NC, he's got an attitude about his cue. But one bite had him grinning from ear to ear. I had their double wammy, BBQ beef and pork. Slathered with their bourbon bbq sauce it was delcious. And that wife of mine? She ordered a grilled Caesar Salad, and it was a head of romaine lettuce, halved, lightly grilled, with a nice tangy dressing and perfectly seasoned (as in, "Oh my god, I don't know what's on this chicken, but I love it!") grilled chicken pieces. Other kids had kid stuff: chicken tenders, grilled cheese, fries. All were good, but y'know.

One of my wife and my favorite things are trying new restaurants. That's why we love being on vacation because there are usually tons of selections. Not much to choose from in McGayhesville but we were pleased with every place but this one. Went here after a day of hiking in Shenadoah after another couple recommended. We were hesitant because truly good bbq is hard to find Bottom line- server was great, wings app was great, bbq was terrible. It honestly tasted like beef jerky. I hate writing bad reviews, just wasnt very good. Maybe just a bad night of bbq/brisket making??

Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Food is different than you might expect and delicious; most rubs and dishes are excellent. Chicken can be a bit dry. We always eat here several times while visiting Massanutten.

The food was fine, if stayin on Massunutten Resort, make sure to get off the resort to eat and this place will be significantly better than resort food.

Casual and friendly. Excellent service. 1/2 price appetizers between 4pm and 6pm. Shrimp and grits appetizer outstanding and is meal in itself. Nice that you can add sides of brisket or ribs for $3.99. Brisket was tender and tasty but a little dry

Hanks is a completely acceptable restaurant. The bread was okay, the service was okay, the entree was just okay. We had the ribs for two, and we were both full when we left. The ribs were a little dry. It was really nothing to write home about.

So so BBQ. Very strong smoke flavor in everything. So strong it tasted fake. Love BBQ and eat it everywhere. Love good smoked pork and beef but this was way overkill. Wifes salad was so so. Service was friendly and only thing that saved this place getting a one star rating.

Food was good and served by a very friendly wait staff. The restaurant gives you more of a "Bistro-type" of atmosphere, which I found odd for a BBQ smokehouse, but it definitely gives Massanutten some flair and style! We started off with the nachos, which were very good. The plate, nachos, black beans and cheese were hot, but for some reason the BBQ on the nachos were cold. This really off-set the flavor and expectation of a completely hot nacho appetizer. I had the "All-U-Can-Eat" BBQ plate. There is plenty on the first go-round, so just stick with the regular BBQ sampler as the all you can eat plate does not come with the ribs. The pork BBQ was excellent, especially with their whiskey sauce. I did not like the beef brisket as it had a strange taste and texture to it. I wish I had just gotten a big plate of ribs like my wife did as they were very good and fell right off the bone. Their dessert was absolutely fantastic! Their pecan chocolate-chip pie was the best I have ever had! If you can avoid it, do not sit in the booth by the front door. Although a glass partition and a partial wall separates the customers, the constant opening-shutting of the door causes the glass to rattle every time, which can quickly become very annoying. Parking is a bit challenging around 6pm and the crowds get larger shortly thereafter. This is 1 of 4 BBQ joints in and around Massanutten and the only one that serves alcohol.

BBQ sampler plate to go with 1 side for a womping $17.99. Delicious. So cool. Hubby picked up take out, so I wonder what it looks like inside.. but the food.. the food! I am a sucker for good BarBeQue. The food was pretty solid, 3 stars worth. Pulled pork was good but a bit drenched in sauce. Brisket a little dry. Delicious coleslaw and macaroni salad. Potato salad needed a touch more cider vinegar. Still, very good eats.

Hank ran out of Prime Rib at 5:55 pm on Thursday June 5th. 2014. Once again, Hank did not have Prime Rib on his Prime Rib nite. So, Do not go to Hank's for Prime Rib because he does not live up to his advertising.

Middle of the road. My rack of ribs were literally half moist and half dry. 4 bones had moist and smokey meat, and the other half of the rack felt cardboard in my mouth. Flavor-wise, I liked these ribs a lot. I got the dry rub, but asked for the orange-chipotle sauce on the side. You could tell that, as claimed, the foods are made from scratch with quality ingredients. The portions were just right. Didn't go away hungry, but I didn't get a food coma either. It helps that we skipped dessert. (Had some at home, anyway.) The server was friendly and attentive. Smiled, stayed on top of the drink refills and other needs, etc. I was a little confused by the decor (didn't jive very well with the menu), but that identity crisis was only a minor infraction, IMHO. Aside from half my ribs being dry, nothing else had me raving (good or bad). An overall "A-OK" experience. My favorite part of the meal was that it wasn't horrible, and more importantly, it was enjoyed with family.

The margarita was yummy. The Caesar salad , terrific. The shrimp and grits are awesome . I was not fond of the dry rub ribs as I didn't like any of the sauces, but everything else was great .

Came with family, so we were a party of 10. Ordered multiple dishes: calamari appetizer, pretzel appetizer, gumbo, ribs with fries, pesto grilled chicken, the naked burrito, grilled salmon, and a few all you can eat BBQ platters. Pros: - Decent service. We were a large party and our waitress was cool. She refilled our waters, gave us what we asked for, and didn't make us wait. However, I will say that I think the restaurant needs more wait staff. Our waitress didn't seem to get as much help as she needed. - Good quality meat and food. Their BBQ sauce was pretty good, too. My husband definitely helped himself to the 2 types of sauce on the table for his meats. Cons: - The all you can eat BBQ platters only come with 1 side. Whenever the meat was refilled, the sides weren't refilled. - The BBQ platter is only brisket and pulled pork. It's not a variety of meats. - The menu variety is ok, but to be fair, they're main focus is BBQ. - The prices for the fishes and the seafood are high, especially given how little seafood is in the dish. My salmon was small and there were only like 5 shrimp in the gumbo, which is like $15. - Checked in on Yelp, which gave me a free appetizer coupon. However, I was not allowed to use it, because I could only use M-F 11am-4pm. I don't like those limitations. Any coupons I've ever received on Yelp during check in, I've always been able to use it at the same time. If you're going to use Yelp and encourage your customers to use it, don't have limitations on the check in coupon. Final Answer: Good food. Am willing to come back.

We are owners at Massanutten and this was the second year going to Hanks. Food is mediocre, over priced and the service was mediocre as well. Had the brisket which was tough and very fatty and swimming in very sweet BBQ sauce. My husband had to wait 10 minutes to get a knife so he could start his dinner. Again, very over priced for what we had and overall not good. Don't bother.

Recommended by the B&B where we stayed, and it was a good choice. Had the sampler platter, which is a ton of food, with the orange Chipotle sauce. Everything was very good, and I liked the way they sliced the brisket , instead of shredding it. Service was great, and the atmosphere is good. Clearly a popular place in this area. We would go back again when in the area.

The food here seems made from scratch. Once you walk in, you can smell the smoke in the air that someone's been toiling over the smoker for a long time. I ordered two types of wings...the dry rub and the buffalo. One big annoyance is that one order of wings only come with 6 "large" wings that weren't that large. Unfortunately, I think the smoking process made the meat extra dry. I wasn't too too impressed with the dry rub, as it seemed too sweet like a lot of brown sugar was used. I then ordered a combo that consisted of two choices. I picked the dry rub 1/4 rack and a sirloin steak. You get a side order with that and a salad for $2 extra. I wanted to get the salad but they didn't offer the Caesar as a side. Again, the dry rub was too dry. The meat was fall off the bone, but it lacked flavor. The server mistakenly gave us the whiskey bbq sauce and it was by far the best type of choice for the ribs. I highly recommend the whiskey bbq over dry rub. Other choices include a hoisin based sauce and some other sauce. I also a beer sampler and I can say I wasn't too impressed with any of them. Service was attentive and the atmosphere was good. It's always good to dine in a non chain place that serves original fare.

First time here. We grabbed some grub on Sunday night as we were heading back home. We tried the nachos, ribs for two and their pecan pie. The dry rub was good. A bit dry but good. The whisky bbq was sweet and yum! We will definitely come again.

My husband and I are true foodies and we travel the world...By far two of the single best meals I have ever eaten were in Hanks. I don't know who are the cooks behind Hanks and Thunderbird Café (related places) But I wish, no I pray they will come north to Orange County NY so I can be this happy all the time!! (My husband says Ditto) Thank you for making our Trip and our Anniversary extra special. And your wait staff is just Awesome....Thank you all

We were on vacation and wanted to try different businesses, we came to Hank's.They asked if it was ok to wait 20 minutes? We are from Memphis so that was nothing. The place was packed, people waiting to eat, only 3 waitresses, since one called out. The waitress took our order 5 people, then of she went, came back with food, our drinks then asked if we were ready to order. We ordered ribeye, ribs, chserviceicken and steak& shrimp. When food came to the table, it was hot. I ordered ribeye, smashed red potatoes, and season vegetables= green beans& tomato. The food was AWESOME... The waitress did not miss a beat. By far the best place to eat. Great food, wonderful .

This BBQ was delicious! Tiffany, the server was very quick and made sure we didn't want for anything. Had a side salad to start which was a spring mix with an herb vinegar dressing, excellent. Had the shredded pork and Texas brisket which was great. Not too smoky. The ribs were excellent! I will be going back before heading home!

By far the best food my family has come across in our years coming to Massanutten. We always seem to end up dissapointed, luckily this wasn't the case with Hank's. The ribs were cooked to perfection and the sauce was ok. The service here was great. Friendly staff and very attentive. I ordered the rib eye as well as the ribs. The steak was good, not the best I've had by any stretch of the imagination, but better than what I've had in this area. As a starter we odered the shrimp and grits and my God!!!! I wish they had it as an entrée. This was the best shrimp and grits I've ever had short of Charleston NC. overall I will definetly be coming back to Hank's and sure my family and friends will follow.

Not very good, the ribs were as dry as the Sahara and not very tasty, the Texas brisket was ok, and the pork was underwhelming. The beers were ice cold and tasty, but the food left a lot to be desired.

After reading the mixed reviews, I decided to try it to myself. "showed up thinking we could use the free checkin free appitizer but its only the weekdays during times no one goes and eat." made me laugh, as the appetizer is available 11 AM to 4 PM, which is a fairly generous allowance for lunch, which is when the majority of this country enjoys a meal. The free appetizer was a pulled pork slider, and I would rate it about three stars. I tried the brisket, and while not nearly as good as the brisket you would get in Texas, it seemed slightly above average for brisket that I have eaten around this part of Virginia. The sauces seemed okay, the service was great, and the place was pretty nice. The prices seemed a bit on the pricier side, but didn't seem outrageous. Overall, it's a place I would come back to for lunch.

Best food so far on our Massanutten trip! My wife always has something wrong with her food and everything was perfect. The kids menu offered Mac n cheese and it was not Kraft!!!!! It was homemade!!!!! I had the salmon and it was delicious! I also had the beer sampler. Yum.

We ordered the specials ofblackened Wahoo and ribeye. Wahoo was good, but ribeye was tough with gristle. Spinach and sweet potato hash was very different and fresh, nachos just ok, not crowded on a Sunday night at 6. Microbrews available with growlers to go,

I have had 3 incredible experiences with Hank's The first one was we swung in to try them before looking into the catering menu for our wedding: We swung by about mid day on a Saturday and were greeted by a friendly staff. The bar has an amazing selection of beers for craft beer drinkers and domestic drinkers alike. The wings and sliders were amazing. The second time we met with Matt (The Catering Manager) to sample the menu for our wedding: We brought a brides maid with us; we were all blown away with how delicious and fairly priced everything was. Hank' catered our wedding: We hired Hank's to cater our wedding; with a plethora or options we worked with Matt to find an extremely affordable and delicious menu. We went with Pulled Pork, Jasmine Chicken, Green Beans, Cole Slaw, & Potatoes. The food was amazing, people who don't like pork at the pork, green bean haters were converted, and all of the food was eaten we had minimal leftovers. The service was perfect. The guys showed up on time and went right to work, they helped during cocktail hour, set the buffet table up and the second bar. Dinner went off so smoothly it was hard to believe 2 guys handled the who event. When the night was coming to an end Hank's helped with cleanup. The few leftovers we had were boxed neatly for us, leftover alcohol was boxed, and utensils were packed nicely. Hank's is the best choice for catering or a swing by for a beer and BBQ.

It was our last night at the resort and decided to try some bbq. showed up thinking we could use the free checkin free appitizer but its only the weekdays during times no one goes and eat. tried the bbq ribs which was only half a rack for almost $20 which i felt was super dry-almost like beef jerky- the sauces were not to my liking but used them anyways cause the meat was so dry. i even told my server but i guess they didnt care.

This was the first time we ate at Hanks. While the food is high quality, the rueben sandwich was thin and disappointing. The pork barbecue was not bad but frankly I have had better tasting barbecue in Harrisonburg. In fact I would prefer to go the short distance down the road to Log Cabin. Overall we left Hanks feeling unsatisfied and slightly disappointed.

This is 1 of 2 places I will miss now that I have moved. The whiskey chicken sandwich was the best one I've ever had. The catfish when they have it is great as well. If you only eat they're excellent BBQ you are missing out on the full experience.
