It's ok, their hotdogs are pretty good. Too bad they don't have cheese fries or milk shakes

Fantastic fried chicken, slaw and fries. Every thing was seasoned properly and at the proper temperature when it arrived to us. The car hop was friendly, knowledgeable and gave some great food recommendations. Great place, fantastic food and amazing prices.

Back in Panama City, Florida...many weekdays during high school, I ate at a place called Jimmys. Jimmys was a 50s style drive in/restaurant that has since closed. THIS place genuinely reminds me of those carefree days. I'm not some oldie who is reminiscing on the "good old days" (I'm 28, lol) but I'm reflecting on the whole hearted taste of a genuinely GOOD tasting burger. This is definitely a place I will return to when I want some good comfort food. Two thumbs up from this Florida girl!

Cool little drive in spot. Had the smittys burger and some waffle fries. Really liked the waffle fries. Burger was pretty good but I've had better from drive ins. Everything was a reasonable price and food was brought out quick. Worth checking out but I probably won't become a regular.

One of our local mom and pop institutions. While being an institution does not always guarantee that some place is going to be good, in this case, it does. Simple menu that has not changed, aside from price changes, in as long as I can remember. I always feel like I have traveled back in time when I come here. Back to a simpler, and frankly, better day. Freshly prepared food. Friendly car hops. No clowns, annoying red headed gals, or Kings here. Unless it is the street. Recommended.

Yum yum yum. I have visited smittys since I was a little girl and it hasn't changed a bit. Food is always good and you can't beat the prices.

Prices are the best. Suzanne was one of the best servers I've every had in a long time. She made good suggestions, was very lively and energetic. Don't come here with an attitude because these ladies don't deserve it.

Horrible. Sunday, April 12 around 5 pm. It took 30 minutes to get cold food. Cold burgers, cold bbq, cold fries, cold onion rings (which would've been nasty hot anyway). It was my 2nd and last time eating at Smittys.

Smitty's Better-Burger is tucked away off of King Street not far from the Langley AFB back gate. The food here really isn't the greatest, but for the price you really cannot complain. The ambiance and experience is what is giving the higher rating. Due to having barely an overhead cost, they are able to keep their prices low. The place has been open since the 1950's and it retains that 1950's era of charm with the carhops (though they wear modern T-shirts) and style of billboards and system of ordering food. The menu is placed on the walls of the buildings and hanging from the edges of the car ports. A carhop comes out and places a colored card on your windshield and pleasantly explains the headlight system of signaling when you are in need of service, or finished your meal. The food is pre-processed foods, where often they simply drop the items in the fryer and/or throw them on a grill. The food isn't horrible, but again for the price it is difficult to explain. There are not many places out there that you can pay $5 cash and actually get a meal with a drink and fries. That is becoming a more difficult feat even with fast food joints. Simply flicking on the headlights is the signal that you are ready for your tray to be removed off your car. The Betterburger combo is actually pretty good. I usually get the lettuce, tomato, and onion on it with other condiments. The crab bites are also good. The seafood is of the frozen-processed variety, but for the price, again, it's hard to complain. You'll get our money's worth here. It's not necessarily worth a special trip out of your way for, but its a good experience on a timeless place. I'm being generous with the 4 star rating, the food isn't worthy of the extra star, but the experience is. One final note, it is a cash only establishment. There is a rather daunting run across 4 lanes of traffic to the neighboring Shell station (which is a little sketchy inside) that is the closest ATM.

One of my favorite fast food restaurants. Great local place.

Smitty's Better Burger in Hampton, VA is an interesting place to dine. It's been located in the same place on King Street near Langley Air Force Base for decades. They've kept to the original concept of having carports, carhops, and window trays. It's considered a "landmark" in Hampton mostly due to its longevity and (now)-retro look and charm. You get the carhops' attention by flashing your headlights, which is a cool touch, and the overall experience of the food being brought to your car and having the window tray is pretty cool . If you're in the area, this process alone makes it worth checking out. The food is not wonderful, but fortunately the prices reflect this. I would recommend sticking to the basics--burgers, fries, onion rings, etc. They are all pre-packaged foods, and this is clearly how they're able to offer such low prices. I have no problem with certain pre-packaged goods, but I would recommend staying away from the chicken fillet sub, ALL the seafood, and the chili (which looks and tastes suspiciously like Alpo... not that I would know... ). The lunch special is solid. It's the Better Burger with cheese, fries, and a medium drink for $4.49. A five dollar price point is exactly what the special is worth, and I imagine the low prices are what have kept Smitty's in business for so many years. One last thing--the BBQ pork is nothing special, but they do have homemade coleslaw that's actually pretty good. The combination of the two is worth checking out. However the coleslaw can't do much to help out the fried chicken.

Based on the history and the complete lack of good food in the area, I was really hoping this would be a great place. It's basically a lower quality Sonic (which I cannot believe I just said). The menu is quite varied, but all was nothing special. The crab bites were so-so. the superburger was dry with pretty low quality produce on it (better off with a supersonic burger), Pork, Tenderloin sandwich was overcooked and dried out, although I was impressed to see this on the menu (being a midwest staple items), fried chicken was just ok, slaw was what you would get at KFC, seasoned waffle fries had some potential, but were a bit soggy. Kudos to them for being open for 50 plus years, but I think this is mainly based on the completely uneducated palates of the local folks... on the flipside it must be an upgrade to govt issue food on the base! LOL

so cool, retro, and cheap. I love it. cant beat the prices so try a lot of their unique menu. The secret here is the spiral dog a hot dog that will have your mind spinning.

I know this place is exciting because it is retro. Apart from some paint here and there, this place has not changed since the '60's. There's charm in that . . . to LOOK at. But NOT to eat. The food here made my wife and I sick, I don't think there is a very good following of health code in the place based on that, it certainly does not look like it. The server was a bit abrupt. Maybe it's because we had New York plates, I don't know. Time to set the bar higher Hampton. I am not saying Smitty's should go, they just need to bring it into the 21st Century.

They've been in business for over 50 years and they are serving great food, reasonably priced. If you are looking for a mom/pop shop or a pull up/car port type atmosphere, then this is the place for you.

Nostalgia city! Like eating out as a kid before fast food took over. Get the pulled pork sandwich with hot sauce and waffle fries.

Looks like a dive on the outside...but it's a classic drive-up eatery....like in the 50's. Our food came out hot and fresh, right to your window! Awesome!

After spending my entire 28 years of life in Smittys I have grown to love and appreciate it. My grandpa started it with his brothers. A couple of boys from Wyoming who found their way to Hampton via the Military. From there he met my grandmother and together they made a place that could be special in Hampton. Currently my mom and my uncle run the place. If you go for lunch Monday thru Saturday my mom is there. 6 days a week for 35 years. And while I take pride in her hard work, I know that not every day can go off without a hitch. Sometimes food gets "lost in the sauce", if you've ever had the chance to work in a restaurant you know that at hectic times you can lose track of it. And unfortunately, food can get cold. But dont fret. Send it back. We try to do eveything we can to make things better and tasty. Also, I noticed a "pre packaged" food comment. Of course some items are pre packaged. Go to sonic, BK, McD, or anywhere else and its prepackaged. However, all tomatoes, lettuce, onions, etc are hand sliced....every morning at 7 am. I know, I've done it. Cole slaw is made by hand and slamming thru a whole box of ice cold cabbage can possibly give you frost bite or at least it feels like it. The chili is also made in house. The recipe for our traditional hotdog chili came from my grandmother and is still made the same. And to the fried chicken questioners....its breaded by hand each day and takes 20 to 25 to cook because its not pre made and nothing we have sits under heaters. Just like the burgers, its all cooked to order, not cooked in the morning and microwaved. I dont even think we've had a microwave in that place? Anyways, while it might not be everyones favorite spot, it's always been mine and my friends, who at this point are Smittys family. And while it does need cosmetic updates (we've discussed that a lot) it takes a lot for a small business to do it. So don't let that retro style phase you. It's just like any mom and pop joint. Except not franchise sell out. We keep it real. We keep Hampton. :) "In Hampton, you know you've made it when you can call Smittys and they know your order based off your voice." Love. Eat. Be Hampton.

Beer batter onion rings... Omg!!! Pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw was terrific. Fantastic place for lunch

Smitty's has probably the best burger in Hampton. You can't go wrong with a nice, big, juicy, cheesy burger topped with lettuce, tomatoes and grilled onions. Ya just can't. Then here comes the fries. Arguably the best tasting fries in all of Hampton roads. Then quench your thirst with a nice cold soda. If your looking for a great meal that doesn't break the bank...Smitty's is where its at.
