Foode Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

  • Tom O.

We decided to give Foode another try but were extremely disappointed this time with the quality of the food. The biscuits were thin and soggy, the waffle was completely undercooked and gooey and the presentation on the plate was nonexistent. We never were completely sold on their service model but because of the lack of quality I think it's time to find another brunch spot.

Food was delish. Service was good. Ambience was great. My favorite thing about the restaurant is that there is outdoor seating overlooking old town Fredericksburg. It's just lovely.

We loved the outdoor seating, they were super friendly to our puppies, AND the food was great. We didn't know it at the time, but it would be the best meal we had in town, and all we got was the tomato bisque, the pimento cheese bread, and two beers. Well done Foode.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately that was the only good experience we had here. My husband and I arrived at 4:30 on a Saturday when dinner service began. We sat inside. He got a beer, he did enjoy, and I got the ginger basil lemonade, which was watered down and not very cold. We then ordered the risotto and the pork chop - both were bland and the pork was over cooked. Meanwhile we were trying to eat- we had to constantly swat flies our entire meal! NOT SANITARY AT ALL! We were the first in for dinner service, sitting inside, and there were flys everywhere. We were expecting so much more for the hype....

My friend had actually mention to me about this place. I've always wanted to come but hadn't the time until now. Needless to say, I will be back. The decor is very much like a home. They do stick to their promise of fresh ingredients. You can taste it! Very pleased.

This is my first review on yelp because this was so freeking awesome! 9 of us arrived right after they closed for lunch to prep for dinner, they served us the most amazing food with such a welcoming attitude!! Seriously, hickey salad aandwich, fredericksburger, anything you get seems like it would be awesome. They don't ask for tips, but we couldn't leave enough to say thanks!

I had heard so much about Foode and was really hoping it would be special. Can we talk? I felt like I was in a homeless kitchen, plus we were seated in the Alley way. It wasn't sidewalk cafe cool, it was the Alley. I ordered a chicken salad with curry sandwich. Frankly it was sort of disgusting but I ate half. I took the other half home but couldn't make myself eat it. Maybe other selections are better. They have an air of "aren't we special" about them, but frankly, no you're not. I've been in Fish and Chip places that were cooler. I think it might be a cool first date place, when you're not sure you ever want to see the person a second time or not. It's not much of a commitment kind of dinner date. Its was a place you wouldn't be able to navigate with a disability, don't bother to dress up, wear your best homeless chic.

Great little place sourcing local and fresh! Cozy atmosphere with a fantastic menu for the foodie and someone just looking for a great meal! The crispy fried potatoes with garlic aioli impressed even my 13 year old. The fresh brioche buns and vegetarian options were great.

Went here for Sunday Brunch. The wait wasn't that bad, we were told 30-45 min but we were seated in about 20 min. I had the pink grapefruit mimosa and the big nasty, while my husband had the breakfast hash, coffee, and biscuit with brown sugar pecan butter. The mimosa was good (not that you can mess up a mimosa..) and the coffee was decent. The big nasty was good, not great. The steak is cooked to one temperature only- medium well. I enjoyed the goat cheese cream, but outside of the cream, the dish lacked flavor. Not sure they use salt and pepper. My husband's breakfast hash was ok, but he said he wouldn't order it again. That dish also didn't have much flavor/seasoning, outside of the pulled pork. The service was good and people were friendly. I probably wouldn't go again for brunch, but we may go for dinner to see if it's better.

I will absolutely be back. As a vegetarian, the options were plentiful and tasty. I was impressed by the beer options and the outdoor seating as well. As a newcomer, the ordering system of standing in line to order inside threw me off a bit, but once I got the hang of it, it totally makes sense. It really makes the servers job easier. Overall, wonderful experience.

Unfortunately, we did not have a great experience :( Food was okay. One of the dishes we ordered was the fried chicken with eggs and biscuit, very greasy. Should've known since it's fried! The side if potatoes had some pieces that were undercooked. The seating is a bit confusing. Walk up to order then they let you know what table is available. The staff seemed either tired or overwhelmed. Maybe not a good day. Reviews are great so I was surprised to have this experience.

Pet-friendly, unique service, efficient ordering, quality ingredients used in their menu items. Affordably priced - loved the outdoor seating. Felt like I was in an alley way in Europe.

Creative menu items that change every week or so. So, every time you go back, you'll have completely different food options. There's no table service in the traditional way - upon entering, the hostess will sit you down with a paper menu and when you are ready to order, you go up to the cash register and pay for your order. One of the waitresses will then bring the food over to you and clear your table when you're done. Drinks are self-served and you don't have your own waitress. The restaurant is run pretty efficiently in my opinion. The food was great and staff friendly. The restaurant is located in the old town side of Fredericksburg, which is not a place that you'd normally find me, but I would definitely return to this place if I were in the area!

Well of course I leave Fredericksburg and this place opens up. What a great establishment. We came here for lunch while in town for the day and had a pretty good meal. The Fries were phenomenal and so was the cracked pepper aioli that accompanied them. I got the bacon salad and it was pretty good. A little small, but the dressing was solid and my wife had the Adult Grilled Cheese which was good but the beef that was in it had a lot of gristle. Overall it was a fantastic little place and I will surely return. Foode is a great addition to downtown Fredericksburg and I wish it was there when I lived there. I would definitely recommend their fries, now if they would only cook them in duck fat! Hint Hint...

Their brunch is fantastic! We've had brunch here most weekends over the last year and highly recommend it. The staff are so friendly and helpful, and remember us every time we stop in or pick up an order. They're also great about making small changes to dishes if you ask for it. I typically get the veggie scramble with no cheese, which is fantastic, lots of vegetables (most places don't put nearly enough vegetables), and the potatoes it comes with are fantastic! The atmosphere, especially when the outdoor area is open, is great. A nice little cozy spot but not cramped. They also do take out so if you'd rather sit at home, you can do that too.

  • Del S.

I love going to Foode for brunch. Everything I have tried was delicious. Its a little bit on the pricey side but its worth going once every while. The atmosphere is very quaint, its simply a few tables in an alley way but they have a back with more seating.

Went for Restaurant Week. I was hoping for something truly amazing with a named called Foode and all the great reviews. Highly overrated. Burger was nothing short of a grilled burger you can cook up in your backyard. The banana split with salted caramel tasted like store bought icecream and fudge sauce. Place was dark and tight with one small window. The only great part of the place is the entrance corridor where there's seating. It's nice, bright and welcoming but tight and awkward for people passing through. Would I go again? At $14.50 for a burger, I didn't think it was worth it. On top of it, the $20 for the burger and so-so banana split, wasn't much of a deal for Restaurant Week. It was just okay.

Loved the outside seating it is so creative and peaceful, the staff was really nice too. I like how they operate here it's very simple. The food was pretty good, definitely creative. The prices were not bad either. Decent sized portions were a plus. Will go back to try more of their food!

One of my absolute favorite places in Fredericksburg. Foode uses local farm-fresh ingredients to create dishes that have true personality. I highly recommend this restaurant!

  • Peggy S.

Not impressed. Not by the food. Not by the seating. Not by the staff. Don't know what the deal is here. I wouldn't sent anyone but my least favorite people. But on the positive side, it was clean. Super small, tiny portions of food. Not in a hurry to go back. I understand why the chef lost in the second round on the food network. Lol. Sorry, that's my experience here.

So finally came back here 3 years later. It's been difficult to find chicken and waffles on menus around Fredericksburg, so hubby and I came here for lunch on a Wednesday. My dish came with three pieces of fried chicken and a waffle that has been cut into four pieces. It was served on a cast iron skillet. There was plenty of fried chicken! The batter was flavorful (although parts of the batter were a bit over salted) and it came with sauce on top - perhaps it had a little bit of pineapple or mango in it because it was slightly sweet. The waffles were not crispy. Not sure if it sat too long before it got to me or what. The butter syrup sauce that was on it was very good. Hubby had a sandwich and fries and he was quite happy with it. Not sure if I'd have a craving to come back for chicken and waffles but happy that I've finally tried chicken and waffles.

Small, eclectic and fun. Worth a visit when in Fredericksburg but get there early as the line can go out the door by lunchtime. Virginia beef hamburger was delicious and service was very friendly and patient. Interior dining room is small but some outside seating is available in the alley leading from the street to the door. Thumbs up for: service, taste, price, quirkiness, LOLO

One, two....three strikes your out is usually my motto but the little epicurean elitist inside of me just knew that this level of difficulty to actually sit and have a meal here must be attributed to how orgasmic each item on the menu was. That HAD to be why half of the menu was one-lined well before any patron with a respectable social life would be sauntering in to dine for brunch. The fourth time I went, I ran up to the counter, almost in disbelief that the the menu didn't look like a canvas riddled with line art, I ordered the Chicken Power Scrambler and for my guest, a mushroom omelette. I took care not to be off-put by the laid back style of service or the communal seating, because all of these elements supposedly lend to the lure of Foode. As I let my eyes wander over the shabby chic digs and eager patrons, I could feel the anticipation mounting. I added a buttermilk biscuit to my order after eyeing the one someone sitting next to me had. Our dishes came quick, despite the crowd so my guest and I dug right in. My disappointment was only solidified when I asked my girlfriend asked how she felt about the food. "So, this is what we waited for". Wahhh wahhhh. Such a bummer. While the quality product and relaxed atmosphere lend to the dinning experience, it isn't enough to warrant a 3,4 or 5 star rating. Both dishes lacked flavor and thoughtful composition. While I left feeling lead astray by the buzz surrounding this little Old Town eatery, it was not all for nothing...best element of the meal, and at least worthy of popping back in to order it with a side of tea/coffee, was the delicious pecan butter that I slathered atop my buttermilk biscuit AND even better than that was all the swag that poured forth from Joy's rockin HAWT afro. I believe it may have magical powers.

Places like this are the reason why I love Yelp. Our route along I-95 took us by Fredricksburg, so I used Yelp to find something local that wasn't a chain but unique to the city. So glad Foode popped up! After checking out the site and menu we figured it was the perfect place for us to grab lunch; however, it closes at 3pm and we didn't get there until 2:55pm. Might as well try, right? We found a nearby street parking spot and made our way to the restaurant. Walking through the restaurant's breezeway that has a few unique wood tables under a canopy of umbrellas, I found the pastel parasols perfectly juxtaposed with the red brick of the buildings (wow, it's making me wax poetic, at least alliteratively... yikes). Antoine (sp?) met us and happily informed us that yes, the restaurant was still open for lunch, but just that we make our selections quick so that the kitchen could prep for dinner in time. No worries! Since we had never been here before, we asked what he recommended, and he listed a few things off the menu, including a burger (which are notorious as the longest things for the kitchen to prepare). At his suggestions, we took three Fredricksburgers ($10 for organic beef, bacon aioli, sharp cheddar and organic lettuces on a tasty bun with fries) and two Steak & Potato Salads ($10). DELICIOUS! I took my burger medium rare and it was one of the best burgers I can remember ever eating - cooked perfectly with a great flavor accented by the aioli and cheese. The sweet tea was also excellent! We were the only ones in here, and the staff (Antoine and the waitress/cashier) treated us well, talking with us about their story and how they've grown over the two years since opening. Seems like a great community, and it was refreshing to talk with an employee so enthused about his work despite us infringing upon their down time as they shifted from lunch to dinner.

We really wanted to try this place because we have been hearing such good things and it has an almost perfect rating on yelp. For all the hype, we weren't impressed. The restaurant was very cramped and there were flies both inside and out. The food was very good but very overpriced for the portion sizes. The place was noisy and the servers were just dressed in workout clothes. For all the overblown hipster vibes, the actual experience didn't measure up.

Great cool casual place! Good food, good service, fast and affordable. My wife and I split the delicious New York strip which was probably 12 oz. delicious roasted peppers, onions and potatoes cooked in duck fat! Mmmm. The greens were cooked so my wife asked for fresh greens. No problem! They don't even expect a tip since you order first and then sit. We still tipped a little. Just a cool place. I'd go back! :)

  • JD D.

If you like farm to table, you might like it here. I my opinion, the food was over priced and not as good as expected. The cost for two people, with tips, for lunch was $35. Again, the food did not meet expectations in taste nor portion size (probably due to it being lunch). Ask questions about the preparation (ie: dark meat chicken on their chicken and waffles. My wife ordered this but doesn't eat dark meat).

This place lived up to the great reviews! I had what could arguable be the best burger I have ever had and my wife had a fantastic pork chop. We will be back.

We eat a plant based diet (me all the time and my hubby will eat an egg for breakfast) this makes it challenging when traveling. A tour guide recommended this place saying they use all local produce and would work with us. The result was a wonderful lunch that was both delicious and satisfying! Would go there again!

Amazing amazing amazing! Fresh, local, relaxing, and delicious!!!! One of our favorite gems of Fredericksburg!!

  • Nancy H.

This place is very nice, eclectic and the food is fabulous. The reason for 4 stars is that it's very tight quarters and not comfortable dining. We've sampled a lot of the dishes, and I highly recommend the Fredericksburger along with the fries.

Love this place! Great tasting food, excellent ingredients, friendly staff, great coffee..., I could go on and on. I'll definitely be back.

Organic, fresh quality ingredients. Today I had the chicken cheesesteak which was AMAZING, on fresh soft bread with free range chicken and some nice veggies (broccoli!) wrapped up inside. The iced tea is the perfect sweetness, not Mc'Donalds 'rot your teeth' sweet. The staff is friendly (they won't accept tips) and the interior is cute and artsy. The patio is nice too. The only thing that struck me as funny was that they use Heinz catchup which is loaded with corn syrup and HFCS. There are organic ketchups out there. All in all, it's hard to be disappointed with FOODE if you care about quality and taste.

I really like this little restaurant down in Fredericksburg. The wait staff was good the concept is cool and I enjoyed the food. I would recommend this for locals and out of towers. The website is also great... these girls rock!

Cool little place, reminds me of Portlandia (oh how I miss it!). They could be a little more generous with portion sizes, but other than that a nice spot for the weekend if you're looking for a hipster organic vibe.

  • Cassandra L.

Foode has delicious food! I ordered a toasted farro salad to go, and they generously added more farro since I requested mine without meat and cheese. However, the inside of the restaurant could use a revamping as it looks like a crappy diner meets a car wash waiting room. Very awkward. They could probably benefit with some music, too, as a lot of women brought their kids. I am not likely to dine there because of the atmosphere. But the food, though.

My friends love to eat here, and I will go along with them for the association. They have a great ambiance, but I can never get a real meal! I am a vegan, and I would think that an establishment such as this would have at least one option on their menu, or even the means of creating a meal off menu for someone of my needs. They, oftentimes, offer me a side order of mixed vegetables which satiates hunger for the time being. But, don't go on Sunday, as they run out of vegetables on Sundays. Lol! Again... They have a great atmosphere and I've heard their food is good. :(

Delicious food. When we decided to find a place to eat using yelp, we had to eat here because of the good reviews. The burger I had was amazing, and my friends really enjoyed their pasta and brisket.

  • Jon L.

Their menu changes daily. The hostess hands you a menu when you walk in the door. You order your food and then get seated. It's a very small dining room. We sat at the 'community table'. We ordered the pimento cheese toast appetizers which was OK For our main we both had the Sloppy Jane, Ground turkey & chicken...it was excellent. Very casual, quite busy on a Saturday for lunch. Go early or be prepared to wait.

I really liked Foode. I liked the "concept" and I liked the vibe. I love that they sorta let the customer take care of themselves a bit and they don't expect tips. I'd say the food itself wasn't as amazing or as excellent as many Yelpers would have you believe, but it was good. I had the chicken n' waffles and my wife had a salad. We ordered a few sides too because they were so reasonably priced and because we wanted to sample a few things. All the food was of a high quality but the recipes weren't exactly too tasty. The chicken and waffle portion size was pretty good but both the chicken and waffle were a little blah. My wife's salad was a straight up disappointment (albeit a fresh, high quality disappointment) but the sides were all pretty good. We had actually been at a TGI Friday's the evening before for a family event, and we realized that we spent less at Foode and got quite a bit more to eat. I'll definitely go back to try more menu items.

Long wait, cold and average food at best. We went a busy Sat afternoon. A 30min suggested wait turned into 50mins to get a table. Food took an additional 30 mins to come out after asking couple of times although we ordered immediately after we came in. And the worst part - it was cold including the grilled chicken and the toasted bread with the sandwich. Seems like this place is mostly hyped up due to it's cool concept.

  • Irene W.

I guess I'm the oddball that likes to be served when I'm paying $15 for a burger and fries! The meat was definitely fresh and delicious - although slightly overcooked for medium (charred and cooked completely through about 1/4 around the outside of the burger. Fries were tasty. However, after being told how wonderful it was by a friend, I was taken aback by the casual atmosphere for such an expensive menu! I am not going to order a $25 steak and pay for it at the counter! And then have to get up to serve myself my own beverages!! We chose to sit inside and the tight quarters were uncomfortable and sitting at a double next to the electrical/supply closet that the waitress had to enter several times while we were eating was annoying and intrusive. Not an enjoyable experience but I will say the food was very good. I would have rather gone to Capital Ale House down the street!

  • Anna B.

Wow!!! A diamond in the rough...the food was incredible. Let me just say, pimento cheese toast...just say yes, please. You'll need a few for sure. The burger was great. The hanger steak was fab! Our six year old got busy with some pasta tossed in ricotta and sausage...she didn't complain! ;o) the sweet tea is good, the beer selection was really cool too. I enjoyed an organic ginger saison with my yummy burger, and I would do it all again. Thank you very much! The counter was attentive, and the food runners were polite and helpful, but without a dedicated table server it left me wanting something in the service department. That said, it wasn't anything I wanted more than coming back here! Give it a try and enjoy!!!

This place is great! Located in the heart of downtown Fredericksburg, foode offers delicious gourmet style food in a casual atmosphere. The food is excellent and although the menu is pricey, they do not accept tips so the bill ends up being reasonable.

Perhaps we were here on an off day, but I honestly can't see what the stellar reviews are about. There was very little about our visit that was stellar. We waited about 20 minutes just to get inside to place our order at the counter. After we placed our order and paid, we were told that there was not actually a table ready for us and that our order would be placed on hold in the kitchen. We awkwardly stood in the middle of the tiny dining room with our two small children for an additional 15 minutes waiting for a table. We finally got a corner table, and waited longer than we would have liked for our food to arrive (at least 10 minutes), especially considering that our food order was placed on hold previously. The food was fine, but the only memorable part for me was the pimento cheese toast. I ordered the chicken cheesesteak. It had decent flavor, but the chicken wasn't sliced as thinly as it should have been to be called a cheesesteak, and the bread was dry with too much bread for too little filling. My husband got the egg biscuit and chef's salad, and we got the waffle for our daughter. The ingredients on the chef's salad were fine, but sloppily presented. The cheese was cut up into large cubes, similar to what you'd see on a Christmas party platter. The honey butter on the waffle was good, the waffle itself was undercooked. The tipping/service arrangement is another head-scratcher. There is no tip line on the receipt when you initially pay for your food at the counter, even though you do get table service. Before we left, we realized we had no cash, and therefore couldn't tip. We wanted to love the place, but walked out underwhelmed and hungry. We probably wouldn't return based on our experience.

This is the story of a weary traveler that got very lucky! As a Seattle WA native on a history tour with two teenage girls we were on the long drive back from Colonial Williamsburg to DC without any good choices right off of the freeway. As a family we love food. We support the local artisan. And we avoid mass processed big box chain dining when ever possible. How does one do this on vacation? Thankfully Yelp exists but even then it is difficult as you don't know the area. On to Foode... Casual. Very Casual. Go in, grab a table, pickup a menu and when you are ready walk up to the cashier and order. This was great given we had just spent the day walking around a colonial theme park in the rain. The food: Foode is like eating from our CSA at home. They source mostly locally and the menu changes weekly based upon availability and season. I had a Jerk Pork Chop served with madras curried black & white rice, green cabbage, and green beans. All I can say was WOW! Kids had the hanger steak marinated in lemon and rosemary and served with sautéed broccolini with crispy russet potatoes with lemon aioli and chicken char-grilled and served with chipotle-bbq sauce served with sautéed bacon-studded spinach and thick-cut cornbread with honey butter. We all had a salad ahead of our main course. The Caesar is NOT traditional but excellent. My wife had the cherry apple salad with mixed greens, sweetly spiced pecans, dried tart cherries, gala apples then dressed with a creamy feta dressing. This was spectacular. My wife skipped a main course and had a small plate of tempura mushrooms served over a cheddar fonduta with a honey drizzle.Yum! Add a bottle of wine and some drinks for the kids and a family of 4 got out for under $100. I was pleasantly surprised and we have been in tourist traps all week and found sub-par mass produced food that cost much more. This place deserves all of the great reviews. I can't imagine being back in this area but if I am, I will make an effort to get here.

The best restaurant in Fredericksburg. Period. It's not even close. They have the best hamburger I have eaten in my life. The menu is unique, creative yet simple. Their focus on healthy, "Farm to table" local food options is outstanding. The only minor quibble I have with them is their space. I wish they were in a better space with more tables and brighter lighting. It can get very loud inside unfortunately, especially during the winter when the few outside tables are not an option. Other than this, Foode is perfection

Food was great as always, and I usually dine there, however today was a different story. I ordered my food to go, and they do not pack any To-go utensils or napkins. However if you are looking for a refreshing place to eat down town, I highly recommend foodē! I have 4 stars due to the lack of to-go service.

  • Rachel G.

Amazing. Can't say more about the delicious good and wonderful customer service. Always come early if you want to enjoy the full menu - they do occasionally sell out of their most popular items (chicken and waffles, chicken biscuit, burger, cheesesteak are among the first to disappear and for good reason.) I've also has the turkey burger, steak omelette, and the French toast. All were excellent. We like to bring our dog and eat outside when the weather is good! Prices are great - my husband and I usually eat lunch here for about $25. Don't forget your tip is included in the cost of the meal.

I had a charbroiled hamburg that was so black and charred tasting. You pay for your food before you see it. So the helper there said sorry about that.

I've been to Foode twice... Once for Sunday Brunch, delicious scratch made biscuits, thick cut bacon, yum, yum! And once for Saturday Lunch, juicy, flavorful turkey burger. Both times the food was excellent! Also, they make wonderful pink grapefruit mimosas!

Good Food! Great Experience! Took my 15 YO daughter their for lunch. She loves going to "Trendy" eateries. She was not disappointed. The location is perfect as you take a short walk down the bricked alley to the entrance. The inside is small, homey and very Fredericksburg. Seating is limited but luckily they have a large community table which my daughter and I enjoyed sitting at. I had the curry chicken salad sandwich and my daughter had the Slaw Dogs. Both were delicious. But the best thing there was probably the sweet tea served in a jar. Amazing. I would have given this place a 5 but there menu was pretty limited and they didn't have many things that I liked. However, they do change their menu every week. So I will be going back for lunch and dinner and may update my rating in the future. For now I will say the food is very good. But go there for the Iced Tea and cool atmosphere.

Deeeelicious! We stopped here while on a roadtrip thanks to yelp reviews, and I'm so glad we did! The ambience is great, and the staff were friendly. Since the restaurant focuses on organic, locally sourced food, I expected it to be overpriced and hoity toity but it was exactly the opposite. All of the lunch dishes are under $10 and the portions are huge. Throw in a fancy cooler drink and you're at $15 plus tax, no tips required. We ordered 5 meals and they came out within 10 minutes. The coolers came out in less than 5min. Foode is also very child friendly. They have nice big sofas (perfect for the breastfeeding mama who came in) as well as cafe tables and lots of high chairs. The kids menu is a little on the pricier side ($6.50) but again, a large portion so my daughter will be getting it again at snack time :). They only have horizon organic 1% milk though which I don't like because it's that UHT muck and not whole milk. Anyways, onto the food! I ordered the steak crostini (toasts w chevre, steak, homemade relish, onions, greens, balsamic) - Omg, I loved it! Also got a side of chunky herbed fries which were also yum. Side note: Rather than the Heinz ketchup that was offered, I would have preferred to see something organic or just more relish for the fries. Hubby ordered "the fredericksburger" and loved it. Who could really go wrong with a burger with bacon aioli? ;) My parents both ordered the chicken salad sandwiches. They were ok, but my hubby and I definitely got the better picks. My folks also ordered orange-lemon thyme coolers, and they were huge and super yummy. I should have gone and got one too but maybe we'll just go back another time :)

Best food in Fredericksburg! Hands down. My fiancé and I have eaten here more times than I can count, and have never experienced less than perfection. Everything from the atmosphere, to the menu, to the farm fresh, organic, local food options, to the absolutely lovely staff, is completely on point. It's rare to find a restaurant that serves amazing gourmet food, and still makes you feel welcomed like you've just arrived home. I just can not say enough about this hidden gem! Do yourself a huge favor and go! Here is a link to their Foodspotting reviews: foodspotting.com/places/…

The food here was very good. Between two of us we ordered three of their snacks/small dishes and I was pleased to have been filled up. We ordered the spicy sausage with polenta, the chef salad and the olive and bread plate. The chef salad was meh. It was a hurty-turdy version of a chef salad, but had merit. The sausage and polenta were GREAT! The olives were good, but it would have been cool if they came with more of the roasted peppers and marinated onions. The orange rosemary cooler was AWESOME!!!! I knocked a star off for the service. I was not impressed with the wait staff. I understand they don't get tips, but they weren't very attentive until the restaurant filled up and they started a wait list for tables...of which they had at least four open. Then all of a sudden we had two people in less than three minutes ask if they could remove our plates and box up our food....WHICH WE WERE STILL EATING! While I was impressed with the food and the ambiance, I don't think I would return.

I ate the Strawberry Waffle and husband had the Chicken 'n Waffle. Both were about $9 each. The Strawberry Waffle is just a waffle topped with fresh strawberries, a dollop of whipped cream, and sprinkled with cinnamon-laced powdered sugar. It was tasty but I had to steal Mr. S's syrup because it was a little dry. Overall it was good. The prices are high because they don't charge for tip (I assume this is the reasoning). Next time I will get the chicken biscuit! Of course, the decor is super quaint. We ate outdoors in the cute alley where there were colorful opened IKEA umbrellas hanging above us. I overheard the busboy talking to another patron about what they'll do next, so it sounds like the alleyway decor changes every so often, which is a nice touch. In my neutral observation, this place had a lot of hipsters.

LOVED this place!!! We were a bit put off by how small it is and that you have to go up to the counter to order. But, it was a cozy atmosphere and the food was SO good!! We had the Fredericksburger and fries. Both were cooked to perfection and had amazing flavor! The bacon aioli that is served with the meal is not to be missed! There weren't many gluten free options, but it all seems like REAL food and we just ordered our burger without a bun. Will definitely be going back soon.

In Fredricksburg for the day and we had an amazing BBQ Lunch courtesy of a place we found through Yelp. After walking through the historic downtown area and perusing the many antique shops near Foode's location, we decided to yet again trust our stomachs to the reviewers of Yelp. High on our own confidence in the website, we decided that we should try out Foode, to which we had been raved about by our friends passing through the city and which we were pleased to see was the highest rated restaurant in the city. Greeted by the sign outside the establishment, I was at first enthusiastic about finding a new trendy place for a bite on our trek along I-95. The tagline, "Gourmet for the Rest of Us" seemed to imply good food at cheap prices, which by itself is generally exactly what to look for. What should've been a redflag to me was that this restaurant was advertising it. Nevertheless, with empty stomachs and high hopes we went into the restaurant. The first thing upon entering the restaurant I noticed was that it was in, essentially, an alleyway. Or, at least I thought that the outdoor seating was in an alleyway. Beneath the colorful pastel umbrellas hung above this alleyway my preconceived notions about a trendy restaurant were confirmed, and then again by the college-aged staff. The next thing was being directed to the back of the restaurant, where we would order and where I thought we would sit. It having just rained, the seats and tables were very wet, the umbrellas hung above the alleyway seemingly did very little against the downpour. So we made our way to the back and came across, in this August heat, a very warm, cramped, and dim room. Needless to say we didn't want to sit in this room at the only inside table the restaurant had to offer, a community table no less. So we decided to sit outside on the wet tables. Another quirk of this restaurant besides the terrible seating accomodations is the way which you order food. Instead of being given a menu at your table, you're asked to order at the cash-register, even though there is full table service for drinks and for the food and despite the 5 waiters which tended to us during our meal seeing if we wanted more drinks or anything. So now we're in a crowded, hot, humid, dim room ordering from a very sparse and slightly eclectic menu at the cash register, 30 feet from our table. Very poor. I opted for the Thai Fried Rice, as did one of my colleagues. My other chose the apparent signature dish, the Hamburger. When the food came, I was immediately struck by the egg on top of my rice, as well as the egg in the hamburger. It made me wonder whether the "e" on the end of Food stood for egg. My hamburger-armed friend began to dig into her meal as us thai-ricers dug into ours. The Thai Rice. I don't really know where to start. There was a lack of spices altogether and the vegetables mixed into the rice were undercooked, tough and lacked flavor. The rice itself was the wrong grain and also crunchy. The only spice that the chef who made this knew was apparently soy sauce. So, all in all a terrible meal especially for a restaurant offering what was apparently "Gourmet" for the rest of us. This is the kind of restaurant that in a big city, like New York, would look nice and you might walk by it in the evening or at your lunch hour and see perhaps one or two people dining, but never go in yourself. Perhaps for a smaller town like Fredricksburg, it is the best they can get and the closest to "gourmet" food, which apparently is just a synonym for upper class exotic food. They try hard to pull of the look of a down to earth gourmet restaurant, using the recycled umbrellas as a ceiling, the exposed brick walls, scratchily painted shutters and rescue wood tables. They also used jars for glasses which instead of proving nifty and cool just ended up being cumbersome and annoying. What this leaves us with is a restaurant that doesn't know it's own identity, tries to hard to be cool without trying too hard to cook good food. If you're in Fredricksburg, skip this restaurant and look for something more appropriate for the area. BBQ, perhaps?

WOW!!!!!! This place was AMAZING!!! My fiance' and I went on a busy Saturday and there was a little wait, but nothing out of the ordinary. I liked that you order and pay, then you wait for a table. The grapefruit mimosa was TO DIE FOR! I had a simple egg and cheese on a biscuit that was only $5 and was sooo tasty! I cant wait to go back and try the vegetarian omelet! I would go back every day if I had the time.

Foode is just a gem!! Totally crave-worthy! The ambiance is trendy casual for sure. They don't offer traditional table service. Order at the counter and they'll drop off your food at your table. Don't expect them to refill your drinks for you either. That's what the drink refill stations are for. But, they also say that you shouldn't feel obligated to tip! The menus change weekly to stay in sync with what is in season. Their brunch dishes are delish, as are their burgers. If you happen to find yourself in F'burg, you must visit Foode!

This place absolutely lived up to the ratings and reviews it received. Between the two of us, we ended up ordering 8 dishes just because every time a server walked by with someone else's food, we immediately wanted it. There wasn't a single dish that let us down. If you're anywhere near this place, you have to check it out! FYI They're menu is continuously changing but if they have it, the prawns are a must!

Seriously good food, but a seriously wacked ordering system. Foode has outgrown "simple." Standing in a confusing line blocking the door and food traffic might have been fine when the business was still new, but with all of the people that are frequenting this place now, it just doesn't work. There are a number of girls standing at the register and running back and forth through the line talking to people when there already isn't enough room. Just sayin', the space doesn't work for what they are trying to do. Foode might as well have regular sit down service - avoid the clutter and irritation for your patrons and let all those chicks collect tips!

Overdone vibe, harried staff on a Saturday morning at midmorning. Had a friend who had morning sickness and they didn't care a damn when I asked for a roll for the poor girl. I've been to a lot better, but I guess Fredericksburgians who don't know SF or Brooklyn will rave about this place. Meh.

I've been to Foode for lunch more times than I can count. It's usually busy, so grab a table when you come in. There's also a larger community table. You get a weekly paper menu at the register and order there. You never know what surprises you'll find on it but there are some consistent menu items that are favorites. There are a few tables outside in the very pleasant alley entrance. The food is made in the kitchen upstairs, and brought from the outside entrance in a timely manner. The food is grown locally, some organic and extremely tasty. Everything. The burgers are moist and flavorful, the soups varied and different, small one person appetizers or something to share, salads unique and fresh, pizza very good and different than the local chains. They sometimes have on the menu a fresh rosemary bread you order and it's baked just for you with a dipping oil. It's awesome, tasty, crispy! The atmosphere is friendly, cozy, hometown feel, buzzing with people, first name basis, decorated with local artwork on the walls. Hanging around for more than an hour would probably depend on the time as it stays full through lunch and there are people who would like to sit and eat. There is no place like it. It's a fantastic addition to downtown Fredericksburg!

Foode is Fabulous! There are many reasons we love foode, first the food is amazing, second the food is locally sourced, third the genuinely friendly staff, fourth the creative menu that is ever evolving and finally did I mention the food?!?! I do have one recommendation (only one) the foode fries leave a lot to be desired, if only they would change their fries (check out Kybecca's fries) - aside from fries (minimal suggestion) I highly highly recommend frequenting this restaurant, not to mention the owners Beth and Joy are jut down right super nice people!

Fantastic food. Lots of neat choices. The space is a little small and the noise slightly loud when very busy. But I will definitely stop here again on the way to or coming home from DC. We love stopping in Fredericksburg. .

Wow, tried Foode for the first time. Loved that tips are not required! Burger was big (had to take 1/2 of it home). Can't wait to go back and take advantage of the outdoor courtyard.

I had high expectations for this historic-area restaurant. It probably didn't help that i was there on Father's day (with my boyfriend- but that's another crazy story). So after being moved from the 30 min wait outside to the inner sanctums of this place to wait another 10 minutes, we were herded into the cashier place to pick our meal and pay. Cashier was friendly. We ordered and waited around the cashier place for someone to seat us. Another 10 minutes. We get seated outside underneath a rainbow canopy of umbrellas. Nice. Decor was nice. Actual seating and my meal? Not so nice. There was a huge citronella candle in the middle of our table. The dang candle was so strong I couldn't taste my food. It didn't help that my egg fritatta was bland. Tomato sauce was the only flavor on that dish. My boyfriend got the chicken and waffles- and his food was good. Also- the patron next to me started to talk about bugs... caterpillars going squish... and it got to the point i had to look over there and see who was talking about bugs while everyone else was trying to eat.... she was clueless. One star of the show: The biscuits with homemade nut butter was excellent however. It did make me nervous that your food is traveling from the 2nd floor down below. (Thought the waitstaff would trip on their way down the staircase.) Maybe they could use a dumbwaiter system. Maybe they already have dumb waiters and don't see the point. One waitress felt put off when I asked for a fork. (If you don't want me to ask, why come to my table to ask me?) So, after that experience I will not be going back. $28 was a lot for a disappointing experience. Especially since we don't live in that area.

I'm going to spare the details of why you should eat at Foode. I live in DC and when I visit Fredericksburg, eating there is an incredible treat --not just for the decadent taste-- but for how delicious, healthy and natural the food feels in my stomach. Please, please, please open a Foode in DC.

Amazing food! Having someone care as much as I do about the quality of ingredients and the deliciousness of the end result is rare and must be praised when it happens. I am both vegan and gluten free and they accomplished such a feast of a meal I was blown away. My meat loving family enjoyed what they said was the "best burger" they'd ever had. I have to over emphasise how impressive the quality of ingredients were. An absolute treasure in the heart of Fredericksburg. Thank you for the service you do to this community!

It was alright. To me it was very expensive. They also run out of things over the course of the evening so when we arrived there was already multiple items that we could not order. The service however was good and I enjoyed the atmosphere. We sat outside and enjoyed the evening. The building and the ambiance are cool. The food was really good, I just didn't like what I ordered. Chips and salsa are delicious! I don't know if we will be back.

Oh, Foode. I wanted to believe in you so much. Don't get me wrong, the food I ordered was delicious (a really yummy bowl of tomato soup and a chicken curry salad sandwich that was divine). I even ended up eating part of my mom's Fredericksburger and her fries, which were some of the best I've ever had. But I think I devoured my food so voraciously not because of my appetite, but out of exhaustion from the crazy waiting system we endured. We waited 20 minutes outside after reserving our spot and kind of floated aimlessly around the storefront along with a few other waiting patrons (and it wasn't freezing out, but it was still pretty chilly). Then we were asked to go in and order. Then after we ordered, we waited. And waited. And waited. And I started getting anxious wondering when we'd actually get a table: more people started coming in and ordering, it seemed like people weren't even getting up to leave after finishing their meal. I was hungry! I was told that our food wouldn't even be made until we sat down, so with every minute that went by, my stomach grumbled with impatience. But the wait staff was pleasant, and they were okay with finally seating us inside after we ended up getting fed up with waiting and opted to eat at a table in the courtyard (it just became way too uncomfortable to sit out there in the shade and in the cold). I'd definitely try again on a weekday at a time where the place is dead and there aren't many other patrons there, because I did enjoy my food. But on a Saturday afternoon? No way, man. Your experience will be 85% waiting and crying on the inside and 15% getting to enjoy a very quick meal before paranoia sets in when you see another party of your size glaring at you and your table, and you hear an audible stomach grumble coming from their direction...

Great local food with originality. The service was very quick and friendly and they had a small but respectable selection of 4 or 5 craft bottles. Had the Pizzette appetizer on homemade crust, and the sausage shrimp and grits. The food and the ambiance were great.

There are so many reasons why I love this restaurant! I've eaten here many times and have never had a bad meal. It's a small space and since it's one of the few non-chain restaurants in town that is also good, they're usually packed so the entryway tends to get crowded. However, if you're patient, good food will be your reward. Even better, the staff are all very nice and the place has a fun, quirky atmosphere. The menu changes quite a bit with the seasons, but the veggie scrambles at brunch are always good, I love their pimento toast and whenever fried chicken of any description is on the menu, you're in for a treat! If you like mixed drinks, the various cocktails are a must-try. The bellini is my favorite, but I've had other goodies. And in winter, their decadent hot chocolate is fabulous!

Foode is everything and more! I came here for Sunday brunch and ordered the chicken and waffles. They were fabulous - flavorful, tender, and perfectly filling. The menu is generally very fresh, locally-sourced, and inspired. The building is pretty and very old-school Fredericksburg, with exposed brick walls. Yeah, the place is small and it can be chaotic when crowded but come on people have some patience! This isn't McDonald's. They aren't bragging about having served a billion people. Good food takes time and is worth waiting for!

You walk in through a beautiful, narrow brick courtyard and you feel like you're walking into another world. The restaurant inside is small and cute, almost as if you've walked into someone's home. The vibe is very much that of coming to someone's table for a meal, if of course that someone was using delicious, fresh ingredients and serving drinks out of mason jars in the most natural and least gimmicky way. The menu is great - extensive, fresh and variant. You may have to wait a little for a table at peak times, but if its a nice day its worth the wait. There's almost no where better to go for a fresh, original and enjoyable place to eat. I recommend the courtyard seating, pressed pork sandwich, fries and some white wine. I've heard the brunch here is amazing and I can't wait to try it out!

Nothing worked at this restaurant today. We went in for lunch, it was packed. We waited 20-25 minutes as advised...great start. Then it all went down hill. We ordered at 1:02PM. I am one who does not like my food rushed. 10 minutes passed, I was enjoying my drinks in the beautiful weather. 20 minutes, well good food takes a while. 30 minutes, tables who sat down after me were receiving their orders. 40 minutes, the table who had just sat down received theirs! 45 minutes later ( by this time husband was standing in line inside to ask what happened), food arrived. My Mushroom Sandwich looked good, but when I went to bite into it, some mushrooms were COLD, the others lukewarm. My husbands Adult Grilled Cheese tasted reheated as well. They were busy, and no one waked through to check on patrons. Honestly, it was horrible,...oh, the root beer was good.

My new favorite restaurant. Fresh, creative, and affordable food. I love that you can pay before you eat. Great place to split a bottle of wine. I like their pizza appetizer, their shrimp and grits (not super creamy but good regardless), and their salads. This is great place to go to lunch or an early dinner with friends.

I went last weekend and it was delicious! The weather was rainy, starting to snow so eating outside wasn't an option but the atmosphere was adorable! It was small yet cozy and the staff was super friendly. The portions size was plenty and I even had leftovers. I definitely recommend this place and I'll be back soon!!

Very, very good food. We all ordered salads which were made of fresh ingredients and were interesting in concept. This restaurant has an interesting layout - you walk through an alley which has tables set up for dining. The inside dining area is on the same level as the alley and the kitchen is upstairs. If I were not in the middle of Fredricksburg, I would think I was in New Orleans. Foode ("foodie") is a fast food/dine in hybrid - you order up front and then are seated by a hostess.

  • Derek R.

Very good at a decent price. Nothing mind blowing if you have traveled out of the area. I found the attempts at most dishes to fall short of other eateries in other cities, but here in "Fred-Vegas" it is unique as it has no competition. Unfortunately in a city outside of DC with few legit farm to table cafes "Foode" is about it. What is a highlight is the great service and terrific atmosphere, but ultimately forgettable.

We went to FOODE for the first time tonight and let me just say this... Mouthwatering wonderful goodness! Very comfortable atmosphere, friendly and knowledgable staff. The food is absolutely amazing and perfect for any real foodie! The sweet potato crostini was delectable! The Virginia bacon is AMAZING! My husband's chili burger was awesome and my son most certainly enjoyed the kids hot dog, grapes and fresh cut fries! Did I mention dessert??!! The salted caramel butterscotch budino was by far the most wonderful dessert I have ever had at any restaurant, it left me with a nostalgic feeling... 5 stars all the way! Thank you FOODE! See you soon! :)

After seeing the rave reviews on this place, I was stumped as to why I hadn't tried Foode up until here recently. A good friend & I ventured here one night. First impressions are everything, and I definitely think the asthetics of the restaurant are wonderful. From the cute little alley way it's tucked in, to the quaint and simple decor, it's very trendy. Parking is typical of the area, downtown Fburg, so ample street parking. Upon arrival, they were packed to the gill. The only open seats were at the community table, which honestly, I am not a fan of. At all. I am there to eat. Not to make friends. But if you're social and enjoy people (aka if you aren't me), then I can definitely see why that table would be a selling point. Not for me though. So we waited for the next available table instead. During our wait, one of the employees took our drink orders and brought us drinks to sip on while we waited for a free table. Unique take, never experienced that before. In addition, the drinks were in mason jars. I am a SUCKER for mason jars. I swear I'm gonna make everyone drink out of them at my future wedding one day. Anyway, thumbs up for that. My friend got the sweet tea. I tried a sip of it, but it was just average. Sweet tea runs through my veins so my standards tend to be high. It will suffice though. Our wait was pretty short and we were seated. Take note that the employees aren't your typical servers. They don't kiss your butt and hope you'll leave them tips. And you don't necessarily get assigned a particular server either. Any given employee will come over and check in on you at any given time. Sounds groan worthy, but it really isn't. We received more than enough attention during our dining experience. I almost felt bad NOT leaving a tip but they specifically told us they don't take tips. On to the food. My friend and I both ordered their burger & fries. Yeah yeah, we suck, both getting the same dish but whatever. The burger itself was very good. Tender meat, just enough pinkness to it. Definitely a gourmet burger. However, they provided very little toppings so it lacked any kick or memorable characteristics. The patty itself was pretty small too. The fries were very tasty though, didn't even need ketchup. Unless of course you are one of those people who puts ketchup on everything. Guess what did need ketchup, though? The burger. Anyway. Overall, I was really satisfied with the meal and the experience. However, the only reason that I refuse to give Foode the final fifth star is the price. I understand that the food is seasonal, local, and without any crappy added chemicals. That's great, I'm all for that sort of thing. But the food was too standard to have to pay the price we paid. If I recall correctly, our order wound up coming to like $35 or so. I'm not a tight wad with my food by any means, but that much for two burgers....really not worth it, especially when they gave us like one onion as an excuse for a topping. A patty, a bun, and an onion. Come on now. I would return, I just really don't like the pricing for something that didn't completely blow me away.

I am extremely picky. This is perhaps the single best lunch I have had. Every part of the dishes were amazing, there was nothing that did not receive attention and love from the Chef. Cannot recommend this place enough.

Love this place! Boyfriend and I have had the pleasure of dining here twice. The char-grilled chicken salad sandwich is sweet and savory. The chicken parm sandwich with smoked mozzarella was fresh and delicious. We also tried a mint syrup tea on one occasion that was so refreshing! Perhaps our fav was the Italian herb twice fried fries, either way yum! The staff is sweet and cheery and the decor warm and inviting. Only draw back is menu items go fast and once they are gone, they are gone :( You can't miss this hidden gem!!!

I have been here numerous times from brunch to dinner, and it has never disappointed. Their food is well above average, and has a friendly atmosphere. The only downside to any good restaurant is the chance of having to wait for a table. If you're willing to wait to do brunch, their chicken and waffles is one of the best I've had in Virginia. I will continue to dine here!

Foode is hands down my new favorite restaurant. It all started when my husband brought home his leftovers from lunch...Curry Chicken Salad Sandwich with Potato Salad. From the first bite of that sandwich I was hooked...seriously. I basically insisted he take me here for lunch one day, so he obliged and I was happy to see that the Curry Chicken Salad Sandwich was again on the menu. I ate the whole sandwich this time and loved every bite of it. A few weeks later I introduced my friend to Foode and I again had the Curry Chicken Salad Sandwich. I should probably venture out and try something different...but I can't stop myself from ordering it lol. You should order it next time you go and you should thank me after, even if it's just in your head. :) Oh, and the sweet tea is good, too. This restaurant is AMAZING - they use local everything and it's an awesome atmosphere. I only wish it was bigger so that more people could eat here! They do have outdoor seating, which would be awesome when the weather gets nicer.

Been here on two different visits to Fredericksburg and have to say the way they offer "service" leaves something to be desired. That said, the staff are very friendly and do what they can given the parameters (rules) of the restaurant. Wish they would actually serve me. The food has been pretty good both times, we've tried burgers, pulled pork, a bacon appetizer and the half chicken. All of them had very good flavor (though I'm not sure I got a full hlaf-chicken). Certainly worth visiting if you are there early enough to have a full choice of menu and don't want table service.

Based on reviews, we stopped in for lunch on a Saturday while passing through town, so had to wait 15 minutes for a table. Had the tomato soup (good, but should have come with bread or crackers) and the tuna & bread salad (good, but nothing special). Has a chaotic atmosphere (not sure where the line started or stopped; had to ask twice for water; seating was cramped with lots of bumped elbows). Hmm - too "organic" for us I guess. Not sure what all the fuss is about; can't recommend based on our one visit.

  • Kelly B.

YES! I love this place. Although I am not a devout organic food consumer, I certainly enjoy a restaurant that is founded on such values. You tend to find unusual blends of artistry and flavor when you visit a place that serves organic and local farm grown food! First off, cute as a frickin button tucked in the dreamy historic streets of downtown Fredericksburg. Simpe, elegant holiday decoratings welcomed us as well strolled down the walk (which included outdoor seating w/ heat I might add) just made the ambiance of this quaint little gem that much more enjoyable. Their customer service was the best. We had a 15 minute wait, but I had a very cranky, very hungry 6-year-old. The hostess/waitress spotted this right away and offered to put in an order of fries for us while we waited. The entire staff was just so wonderful and pleasant. Our food was amazing. My sister had the grown up grilled cheese and when her boyfriend tried it he said it was probably one of the best pulled pork bbq he ever had, and he is from Georgia where good bbq is a religion so that says a lot. I had a pizza that came with a salad on top with a tomato vinagerette. It was soooooooo yummy. I recommend this place to anyone who enjoys the treat of gourmet food and appreciates a creative menu that pleases the palate. Great with people. Great with kids. Amazing with food. PS They also serve wine and beer, although we didn't have any this day.

I was really disappointed with my lunch. Ordered the farro salad and it was very bland. Had to put lots of salt and pepper and then hot sauce just to give it some flavor. Was surprised there were no vegan options. The slamming of plates and utensils in to the dirty dish bin under the cash register table was quite unpleasant. Who wants to hear that while dining? Surely there's another way. I love the idea of farm to table and had high hopes for this restaurant but I was not impressed.

Great food and a great experience. The food is outstanding. We went for breakfast on a Sunday and were in line 20 minutes before they opened. The food is outstanding and even better they are well organized. Serve yourself coffee and water. Table service for food and other drinks. Loved it.

I really love the ambiance and outside dining here but my food was just ok, and I realty wanted to love this place! My Father had the steak omelet, which was very salty, to the point where he could only eat about half of his meal. I had the chicken and waffles, the chicken was good, the waffle was dry and a bit hard, no real flavor! My husband had the chicken biscuit and he really enjoyed it. Since my husbands meal was good we plan to give it another try.

Cutest downtown spot! When my friend and I walked down the brick pathway, past their outside seating, into the restaurant, we looked up to see that the sunlight was being blocked by dozens of brightly colored umbrellas hanging up! upon entering the establishment, we were greeted by a friendly employee and directed to the counter to order. Although you order at a counter, you are seated at a table and there is a server who will be taking care of you. It was Wednesday, so their fried chicken and waffle dish was available for purchase. It's only available for their weekend brunch and on Wednesdays, in limited quantities! They use mostly local, organic ingredients in their food, so it's not super cheap, but definitely moderately priced. I had a hard time choosing between the chicken and waffle or the slaw dogs, but I went with chicken and waffle. Delicious only begins to describe it! The savory and sweet flavors blend beautifully together. The fried chicken breast was perfectly seasoned, the belgian waffle, a gigantic fluffy counterpart, with the syrup served on the side. The chicken was juicy and the outer crust was crisp! There are so many intriguing items on their menu, but I'm so sold on the chicken and waffle I don't know if I'll ever try anything else! They don't provide traditional service, so there's no need to tip, which was another plus! Sometimes I find myself going through a fast food establishment if I think I might not have enough to tip Side note: the door does not just push open for you to leave. There's a knob, which I learned the hard way. More embarrassingly, I also learned that it doesn't push open to leave, you must pull. #awkward

So happy Yelp helped me find FoodE! I had such a pleasant Saturday brunch here with a friend from DC. There was a wait when we arrived at about 1:45. While they said it was going to be about 30 minutes, I don't think we waited more than ten. I was surprised to find that they do not have waiter service, but it was nice to have the food delivered to our table without having to leave a tip. You do pour your own water, which is in a little section off to the side with condiments. We were able to sit in the cute dining space outside, which hugs the brick exterior on both sides and is the perfect combination of shade and sun. I ordered the Power Scramble, while my dining companion had the grilled tuna salad. We split a huge side of fries, which were thick cut and delish! The Power Scramble certainly lived up to the name, with a hearty serving of grilled chicken, arugula, cheese and potatoes. All blended together for a nice combination of flavors and textures. The salad was relatively small but looked wonderful (and my friend verified that it was indeed). Nice little selection of canned and bottled craft beer. We each had a Hardywood cream ale to wash the yumminess down.

I love this place! The food is always good. I can never complain about service because it's on me and they don't accept tips. It's inexpensive and fantastic. I love the outdoor seating area. Its unpretentious while maintaining a trendy feel.

Foode has a pretty cool concept. You order in line and then take a table where they deliver your meal. Our meal was fantastic. Well above what I expected. The home fries...oh my gawd! I had a salad with seared tuna which was amaaaazing. Definitely go here!

Foode is a study in contrasts, and probably the most overrated restaurant in Fredericksburg. It's a wonderful concept and space: the menu is well-thought out, the ambiance is really wonderful (the alley through which you enter is spectacular), and the service was friendly and attentive. There's clearly a very capable restaurateur at the helm. All that said: the food is simply not very well prepared. Last year, I convinced myself I'd never return to Foode after my brunch included a scary-undercooked pork chop. But I had a friend visiting and she was taken by the (beautiful) website, so we decided Foode deserved another chance. You can probably guess how things ended up as it convinced me to activate a Yelp account. A run-down: Round 1: Japanese Chicken Wings & Steak Crostini. The crostini was probably the best thing we ate, and it came with a really nice balsamic reduction. But, this is beef on toast so it's not exactly a culinary coup. The chicken wings were undercooked and tossed in a pretty lame teriyaki-ish sauce. We forged ahead. Round 2: Shrimp & Grits and Broccolini. The Shrimp was simple and fine. The grits were under-seasoned and, in terms of texture, lacked grit. They tasted like they came from a box. Broccollini was a disaster. Underseasoned and overcooked and most of it was left on our plate. At this point we're a little over $60 in (date had a glass of wine and I had a beer--both served in totes adorbs mason jars) and the best thing we had so far was toast. Toast. After looking over the uniformly $20+ entrees, we threw in the towel and headed to William St. to find something else. Pros: The ambiance, service, menu and beer/wine list are all excellent. It *feels* like a nice restaurant. Con: You will almost certainly be disappointed by the food on your plate.

I definitely feel I need to update this review. Our first experience wasn't amazing, but we heard so many good things that we really wanted to go back and try it again. We came for Fredericksburg restaurant week and did their lunch combo. I had their burger and it was EXCELLENT. I have nothing but good things to say about it. I think I just got the wrong entree my first time, I am so happy I gave it a second chance.

Stopped in here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch with my folks after meeting up with them in Fredericksburg to check out some of the National Parks in the area. We came here about an hour before they closed which I think impacted our dining experience just a bit. The way it works is you are seated at a table with a menu and when you are ready you have to go to the counter to order your food. Drinks are refill your own when you buy soda or tea. They also have some canned beverages. My mother orders the Big Nasty which was a burger with bacon and an egg. She asked for medium rare originally but revised to medium after seeing what the restaurants "medium rare" normally meant. Her burger still ended up very much on the rare side. I had the fried chicken biscuit. Excuse me while I unhinge my jaw to eat that one.. My dish was okay.. It wasn't bad, but it could certainly have used more seasoning to it. The biscuit could have been a little fluffier in my opinion. As I said it was the end of their seating and I think that impacted things. I forget what my father had, but he did clean his plate! Next time I'm in F-burg I do hope to hit this spot again to see how it fairs.

Foode (pronounced 'foodie') uses produce and meat purveyors from local farmers, and offers lunch, weekend brunch, and dinner menus. They even have a Chef's Meal, which is a five-course tasting meal that require advance reservations. The hubs and I were in the area, and we decided to check out this restaurant for their famous 'Chicken & Waffle.' I did call in advance to make sure that they still had plenty left, but when we arrived, we got the last one! :O Those babies get sold out quick! When you walk through the cute brick alley-way with some al fresco seats, there's an upstairs (for dinners and such) as well as another entrance to their regular dining/cafe area on the main level. You are greeted warmly right away, and you can either grab a table or just order at the cashier (I suggest in you studying the menu beforehand and order right when you enter, as items tend to run out quick!). We tried the following: a Pimiento Cheese Toast (you pay per slice; this was a thick baguette slice with a pimiento cheese spread, toasted so that the spread is melted on top; it didn't really have a kick, and it could have bee toasted a little longer to make it more crispy; this was okay); Curry Chicken Salad Sandwich (all-natural, hormone-free chicken with madras curry, orange zest, red onion, and herbs, with organic lettuce, pickled red onion, and golden raisin aioli on a Pullman bread, served with a side of house potato salad; the chicken was a little too dry, and the curry didn't really dress the meat as much; the bread was a healthy wheat, and the house potato salad was more 'mashed' and was okay); a Beef Cheesesteak (chopped beef from hte Olde Town Butcher, topped with a cheddar cheese sauce and battered fried onions; served on a sub roll with a side of hand-cut fries; I wasn't a fan of this cheesesteak, as the chopped beef was dry, and the cheddar cheese, stated as being spicy, was more like small crumbles on top and was not melted or mixed in with the beef T___T I did like the thick hand-cut fries, as they were seasoned well and yummy); a Summer B-L-T Sandwich (thick Blenheim Organic Gardens tomato slices, lettuce, Benton's bacon, sliced cheddar cheese, Duke's mayo, and seasoned with salt and pepper, served with a side of housemade potato chips; the bread was slightly toasted, but more on the dry end; definitely filled to the maximus with the ingredients, but the tomatoes and the fillings kept falling out and made the bread soggy; I did enjoy the housemade chips as they were crunchy and tasty); the Chicken & Waffle (buttermilk fried chicken set on top of a housemade waffle (that was topped with a whipped maple butter), and a cup of warm Virginia maple syrup; the chicken, while a good size of the breast, seemed to be skin-less and just battered; the meat itself, while cooked all the way through, was not as flavorful as I thought it would be; the batter was slightly on the saltier end and had a unique peppery taste to it; the waffle could have been a bit crispier; the hubs did enjoy the combo of all of the ingredients, but I wasn't really much of a fan); Miss Susan's Chocolate Chunk Cookies (comes with 3 cookies, slightly warmed up (could have been slightly warmer), and a chilled glass of organic milk (so refreshing!); the cookies were not overly sweet, were very thick, and pretty tasty); and, a Strawberry Lemonade (housemade lemonade with fresh strawberry mash and a sugar rim; this was not overly sweet, which I appreciated, and pretty tasty; it does get watered down quickly from the ice, so drink up!). The staff here are super friendly and oh-so-nice, and they have limited seating (a communal table and a few 2- and 4-seaters. There is a citrus-infused water for you to have as many refills, as well as silverware and thick napkins. If you need any to-go boxes/bags, just ask one of the staff members. The bathroom is unisex, so keep that in mind. I am interested in trying out their Chef's Meal and their Cheesy Black Bean Burger, so I may come back to try those out. +Foode's hand-cut french fries +housemade potato chips +Miss Susan's Chocolate Chunk Cookies +Pimiento Cheese Toast (by the slice) +Chicken & Waffle runs out quick - go early if interested! +super friendly staff :D +limited seating +free 2-hour parking around the area

Meh is right. The decor looks like a college dorm. No charm at all. My wife had a BLT. Two incredibly large slices of good white under toasted toast with a perfect tomato, lettuce and three small slices of not very crispy, hickory over-smoked bacon (in the restaurants defense when she complained they brought her 3 more slices of bacon. We ordered pimento toast, it never showed. I had what according to the menu was the "Voted Best Chicken and Waffles in VA," After eating these I can only surmise 1 of 2 things: 1) This is the only place in VA that serves chicken and waffles or 2) Remember VA votes also voted Ken Cucinelli, a guy who thinks that man walked with dinosaurs and that, the earth is 6,000 years old as their States District Attorney. In other words these voters are dopes. The chicken was a dried-out breast, well fried, no bones over an ordinary waffle. Hardly the best fried chicken I've had this week and the waffle was ordinary. Based on the meal the place is over-priced and over-rated. If you want a BLT go to Wendy's and if you want fried chicken go to Popeyes.

Loved this place. You order before you are seated and then when you get sat, they put your food order in. Everything I tasted was amazing, I was very impressed. Loved the atmosphere and the look of everything. Beer and drinks served in mason glasses which were a nice touch. I ordered the bbq chicken with mashed potatoes-so so good. Also tried a small plate cornbread, shrimp chili type dish. That was awesome, actually filled me up too. Next time I am in town, I will definitely want to go here again.

While staying in a small town about an hour away, we found this place. So thankful! We showed up at 430, glad we did, by 5 there was a line to get in. Very untraditional order at the register place with a throughly elegant yet incredibly approachable menu. A ribeye cooked perfectly rare as requested over mashed sweet potatoes with perfectly cooked green beans was heavenly! We chose to sit outside, even though it was a warm August night, the wine served simply in mason jars rewrites elegant cuisine and made us forget all about the balmy air. This place seems to challenge all the norms and we were thankful they did. If we wind up back in the colonial town we will undoubtedly visit this place even though we have a steadfast rule to always try something new! Congrats on this eatery! Dr. & Mrs. M

We moved from Fredericksburg about 15 years ago after being there about 20 before we left. This old section of town was almost dead when the mall was built in 1980. The mall killed downtown Fredericksburg, but there was a resurgence in Fredericksburg in the 1990's, also known as the good times. People with vision bought shops and neat places and turned them into something special in a colonial historical town like Fredericksburg. OK, so what about the food now that we know the building is cool. Two of us got a Today Burger and the others two got Shrimp and grits, or something like it. My burger was nice and the hand cut fries were very good. I can't say it was the best burger ever, but it was good and the building is way cool. I go back a couple times a year and I would go back again.

The food was "alright," but definitely nothing a foodie would actually be impressed with. The wait was extraordinarily long, once we got to our table, it took ages for the food to come out. Once it did, the food came before appetizers. We ordered 4 meals. 2 came right before the apps, the other 2 didn't come until the first 2 folks were done with their food. We asked the server twice to please check on our meals, and both times she said "oh yeah yeah, it's coming" but never left her station to verify. The food came out cold, and there was no offer to even reheat it. After making the server aware of our frustration, she bought us a complimentary bread app for 1 person that was worth less than $2... For 4 people, AFTER we were done eating.......... Never again will I get caught here.

A well rated restaurant with a bit of an odd service. You are first to order your food and then you are shown to your table. Not a bad concept but there was quite a wait for the food to come. I order the hamburger. I was informed that earlier one was sent back for being too undercook. So I specified warm and pink which was their Medium. Instead I got warmish and red, definitely not medium. I'd have sent it back but we had already waited and I can eat rare meat. That's the reason for only three stars. The fries were excellent

If you are big fan of the corporate chain-restaurant experience, this might not be the place for you. Incredible food made fresh with local ingredients, attentive staff that are kind and helpful. We especially enjoy brunch with the family, but be flexible and ready to accept changes to the menu of you come later in the day. To us, it's just a reminder that they are truly using fresh, local products.

Great location, decent staff, and trendy décor, but the worst food imaginable. I hope they only buy pasteurized eggs, otherwise this place is trying to give you salmonella because the scrambled eggs I ordered were so runny it would have made more sense to serve them in a bowl than on a plate. Yuck! I am also very confused about their version of a biscuit. What I received was a traditional British scone; very dense texture and slightly sweet. It was a pretty decent scone, but it was not the buttery flakey biscuit I thought I had ordered. Needless to say, I wont be returning to risk food poisoning again.

Amazing burgers and attentive service. Seriously, I think that burger was the best thing I've eaten all year. The fries were also well above average. Even the kids meals were delicious, and big enough that I got to snag some bites of my 6 year old's hot dog and 3 year old's pb&j. The kids also loved the umbrella decor outside.

An outrageously long car trip to and from the Richmond area for a friend's baby shower necessitated a stop in Fredericksburg on our way back home. I did a quick bit of Yelping and it became immediately clear that Foode was the one restaurant that I needed to visit while we were in town. My boyfriend and I easily navigated through old town Fredericksburg and found a street parking spot right in front of the restaurant. There was a bit of a crowd gathered right outside, so I knew that the Yelp reviews must have been right on the money with this one! The hostess standing right at the front entrance was super friendly, asking us if we'd been there before and then, upon learning we were Foode newbies, explained how it worked. She marked us down for a table with like a 15 minute wait, and handed us menus right away, explaining that you order your food at the register whenever you're ready to order, and then they bring it to your table. I imagine the reason has to do with this providing much faster table turnover and quicker meals, and right on the menu it also details the fact that because they don't do traditional waiting, they don't expect tips. Definitely a novel concept in the restaurant world! The menu is somewhat limited because they obviously go for a farm-to-table, locally-sourced vibe, which I am aaaaall about. There were still tons of things on there I would love to go back and try, so there was definitely enough variety on there for me! Once we were seated inside, we saw why there was a bit of a wait going on -- this place is TINY! There are only a handful of tables inside, plus one long community table that looked like a lot of fun. We ordered at the register, having selected our menu items while we were waiting, and took our seats after being handed mason jars with ice from the register hostess to get our water (Sean) and iced tea (me). Silverware was already on the tables in another mason jar, so I think you can kind of tell the rustic, down-home vibe that this place exudes. We both got salads to start -- for me, the house salad which came with candied bacon, croutons, and cubes of cheddar, and for him, the roasted kale salad which I now totally want to recreate at home. I ordered the roasted chicken, which came with delicious mashed potatoes and some nice crisp green beans. I'm not usually one to get chicken at a restaurant, but they were featuring this dish as part of their restaurant menu and it really did sound great. As it turns out, it tasted great, too! The chicken was moist, the skin still crispy, and the sides really complimented it well. Sean got the gumbo risotto, which was exactly what it sounds like: risotto with a gumbo-type sauce and toppings. He had sort of mixed feelings on it: the first few bites weren't his favorite, but as he ate more, it grew on him. He still said he enjoyed it, and that the risotto was cooked really well. So glad that I paid Foode a visit! And thanks to my fellow Yelpers for your reviews that helped lead me here -- next time we come down, it'll apparently need to be for this place's weekend brunch!

Terrific beer selection, both local and regional crafts. Food was quick and delicious. The wife and I split the grilled cheese and cheesesteak. Both were amazing, but by far the best grilled cheese I've eaten. You order counter style but the staff was still responsive.

I can't even begin to explain how wonderful this place is!! We arrived at about 12:30 on a Saturday and was told it would be 30 min or so. No problem. We waited inside and looked over the menu. At the top is says they are not a typical restaurant and there is no table side waiting. Your order at the counter either before or after getting a table. If you order before getting a table they don't place the order till your seated. I ordered a chicken egg biscuit and pimento cheese toast. My husband got the Fredericksburger. First came the pimento cheese toast. I was fully expecting just a regular piece of breat with hot, melted pimento cheese on top. It was a small piece of sourdough with the melted cheese. First bite, I instantly knew I had made a mistake in only ordering 1 piece. It was heavenly and I do mean heavenly. The chicken/egg biscuit was very good. My husband also loved his burger. Everything is made with fresh local ingredients. Honestly, the workers made this experience over the top. They were very helpful in explaining the process, being that it was our first time. I'm not sure if she is the owner or not but there was a thin woman, maybe 40's and dark brown hair in a bun but she was so awesome. It was very hectic in there bc it is so small but she had everything under control and remained calm and collected. She filled drinks even though it is self service, got hot water for my daughters bottle and much more. Thank you so much for being so nice and helpful. Can't wait to go back!!!!!!

A great place to stop on the way to/from DC. The atmosphere was nice and intimate (but not too yuppie). The staff was helpful and it was so nice that the owner/manager refuses to accept tips! Pay your staff more and do away with an economically useless cultural norm! But the food was great. My wife got the caprice pasta and I ordered the New York strip. Both were well flavored and it was very apparent that foode uses fresh ingredients from local farms. I'd definitely suggest this place to friends who are hungry and just south of DC.

Foode, has great food! Blt sandwich delicious with a smokey flavor to the bacon. Shared it along with the slaw dogs with my hubby.pretzel bun on dogs was a bit dry and hard. Was asked if minded outdoor seating. It was ok .but not the quietest of spots. As we were given a table at the entrance near sidewalk n traffic noise..also had people waiting to get in and eat sitting right near us. Fist time visiting the place..could be more information on drink stations..table numbers need labeled better as you seat yourself. Over all nice. And will probably go back to try some other dishes. Wait time wasn't horrible..but will go when first open..as it was pretty crowded for a Friday lunch.

We love Foode! As regular customers, we have never been disappointed by the food or service at Foode. The food, the food, the food! Everything is so fresh and flavorful; chef Joy really is talented when creating these dishes. The menu isn't huge and changes with what's in season, but there is something for everyone: always a burger option, chicken option, steak, and vegetarian option. Appetizers vary but are always delicious and unique. Since the menu rotates often, I can't recommend any one dish, as the same thing probably won't be there the next time, but I must say that their burgers are always FABULOUS. The meat is so flavorful itself, and the fries are the best homemade, thick cut fries I've had...and I'm not a huge burger & fries gal myself! If you go to Foode, you won't be disappointed, just show up on a Tuesday-Thursday night or at an early or late time or prepare to wait!

Came with a great deal of "word of mouth" praise. Small place. Nice ambience. Nice for a group of four from what I saw. Maybe more but we didn't go up stairs. I thought it was okay food wise. I had the vegetable omelette and chicken. I didn't care for it probably because the eggs were a little over cooked. Ordered another plate of scrambled eggs with cheese which was way better. I liked the ambience more than the food. Good service overall, but I admit that the way my order came out affected my overall rating.

This place is by far the best tasting dinner in Fredericksburg I have had yet. I enjoyed all of the bottomless fresh iced tea while I waited in the gorgeous relaxing patio area. They brought us our gorgeous appetizer and entrees in record time and it was so delicious ! I can't wait to go back.

Buttermilk fried chicken over creamy cheddar cheese grits with bacon-studded field greens and burnt honey drizzle Chicken was moist and tender, crust was light and mildly flavorful, could have used a little more flavor, although, the burnt honey drizzle was excellent and paired well with the chicken. The cheese grits were yummy, fist time for grits and well worth it, also a first, eating field greens!! Delicious. Unique atmosphere and ordering concept. Self serve on the beverages. They have a beer and wine selection that I skipped. Small dessert menu, which I also skipped, I heard there is a bakery in town. Not my usual kind of restaurant, but I am glad I took the adventure and tried something new. Little pricey, but it's farm to table food, and I think it is the healthiest I've eaten out in a long time, even though I had fried chicken!

Situated in the old part of Fredericksburg. Ingredients are brought in from local vendors, reason for weekly change in menu. Staff is very polite. Pay up front then they seat you. We ate here on a weekday during the late lunch hour so it wasn't too busy. We opted for the beef cheesesteak and the pan roasted chicken. So much flavor in each bite! We were definitely happy with our choices! This place is packed on the weekends so prepare to wait a little bit. The food is worth the wait! We plan to try their breakfast choices, hopefully soon!

We came here because of their farm-to-table concept (as well as it being rated the #1 place in the Fredericksburg area), however, we were incredibly disappointed in the food. Everything was extremely average tasting and the ambiance was okay - very casual - and the outdoor seating area was cuter than the crammed, dorm-feeling indoors.

It's hit or miss. Either you love the food or hate it. Since the menu changes (I believe weekly) you can keep going back for a different result. The atmosphere is a bit too hipster for me but the service is good. My main complaint is that the best item they make (their fries), are not available a la cart.

Great food! Very fresh, farm to table cuisine. I really enjoyed my scallop appetizer. It was cooked to perfection and paired with tasty veggies and crunchy bacon. The shrimp appetizer is also delish. Fun, casual dining. Moderately priced for such well made food. Would definitely return and highly recommend.

It all starts with the very cool "underground" atmosphere. I've been here several times and the service staff is amazing and always has a smile on their face from the time that they hand you the mason jar until you're walking out the door with that after-foode glow. The menu isn't traditional, but there is always something for everyone and everything I've tried (which is most of it) is delicious! The portions are great, the food is terrific and the cost is more than reasonable. If you're looking for an awesome vibe, great culture and a good meal this is the place for you! You may have to wait patiently for some folks to vacate their cozy eating spot, but it's worth the wait (and a busy restaurant is a good sign, isn't it?).

Went again today with my mom and two nephews. OMG. Everything was absolute perfection. My mom had the portobella mushroom "cheesesteak" sandwich and I ordered the Fredericksburger. My nephews had the grilled cheese. The portions are generous and filling. I hate when restaurants serve enough for three people. I highly recommend paying a visit. The food is awesome.

Simple yet delicious plates in perfect portions. It's food I feel good about eating because of their commitment to the community. The place is cool & the staff is relaxed and charming. It's nowhere near typical and that is why I love it. One of my favorite spots in Downtown Fredericksburg. If you want fresh, seasonal and locally sourced food in a comfortable cozy environment you have to try FoodE! Take some friends on a Saturday morning, order some mimosas, pimento cheese toast and chicken and waffles (or a veggie scramble for all my vegetarian friends!) and get into the Love FXBG spirit!

I hate to do negative reviews but I had heard so much hype over this place... my brother comes here all the time even, but I just really didn't enjoy this place at all. Not only did I not like the indoor atmosphere but my chicken sandwich was nottt good (and had a long black hair in it). I hate to say it I just really didn't have a good experience!

A quaint and trendy place with delicious American inspired food. The service staff are laid back, but attentive and friendly. The menu changes daily based on the supply of local farmers and butchers. When you walk in, you order your food at the register. If there is a wait, they will not start cooking your food until you are seated at a table. The food is cooked up stairs, so the servers have to go outside and upstairs to the kitchen to get it. That has never affected my service though. I also had them cater my rehearsal dinner for my wedding and they seemed to be completely on my wave length as me wanting it to be an informal dinner with close friends and family. They incorporated a family style setting where we passed the food around the table. When combining 2 laid back families for the first time, this is the best concept ever. The only thing I would change is how small this restaurant is. However, it adds ambiance. The only perk to it being so small is that it makes it feel more exclusive. I've also had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners (she did the arrangements and served at my rehearsal dinner) and she was so kind. If you hit anywhere in Fredericksburg, this is where you need to go. PS, their chicken and waffles are famous.

The burgers here are the best you have to do order that Fredericksburger. We ate in the alley way alfresco fabulous. The only downfall is that you don't get "waited" on as in a typical restaurant. Personally I did not mind that but my son did. This is a fantastic place to go for lunch in downtown Fredericksburg. Sitting outdoors is fantastic, although I've heard other people rave about sitting at the community table

I like Foode. The burger is good. The Foode take on a grilled cheese is good. And I can't remember what else I had there ... oh yes! The warm chocolate chip cookie and cold milk. THAT was really good. For whatever reason my significant other does not like Foode. He does not think the food is cooked properly. I agree their view of "medium" is more like "medium rare" but I think that is easily remedied with good communication with the server.

Writing after my Sunday brunch visit to Foode. I was looking forward to their infamous signature brunch chicken +waffles after reading posts on their Facebook page! I'll start with the food... the chicken and waffles! This, unfortunately, is the reason my rating is for only two stars. While the portions were great, the food was terribly dry and not at all warm. The waffle tasted, looked, and felt like it had been set out for hours, being tough to cut and chew. They did give a cup of the buttery-syrup which was the only warm thing on my plate and although it was a tasty topping, it couldn't save the dish. The fried chicken was a surprisingly large portion but dry and again, not warm. I was disappointed in the dish. The service and staff were better than the food. I was prepared for their order-at-the-counter setup and thought the staff was kind and informative and the process of ordering was quick and easy. The wait for a table on a Sunday morning is expected to be a little long, so again, I was prepared. However, the hostess did state the wait would be 15 minutes and I waited well over 30 minutes. This didn't bother me much. Though, I did feel quite bad for the multiple groups following me to whom she gave the same estimate of 15 minutes, knowing their wait would be much longer. Another bummer of being a single diner during the Sunday brunch hours is that I was asked to take a seat at the very first table upon entering the quaint alley/patio, which was behind the hostess and right next to the bench of waiting customers. It was a little awkward to be eating so very, very close to waiting families. Though, again, I understand being a single diner on a busy morning isn't best for business. The redeeming qualities of my visit was the service. The staff was friendly and even though seated in an awkward place, the ambiance of the restaurant as a whole is nice.

stopped in for lunch today with my husband. it's such a cute place within the antique shopes of downtown Fredericksburg. You order at the counter and they seat you afterwards. We ordered the Grilled chicken hummus, Fredicksburger, and harvest plate. Everything was fresh, tasty, and well presented accompanied by a refreshing strawberry lemonade! I would be sure to visit again!

This is a must go when in Fredericksburg. I honestly don't think they can mess up the food. And now they have a 2nd restaurant I believe t he name is mercantile. I'm going there next. I just love coming to this place.

The food here is amazing! I give the food 5 stars, but I can only rate 3 stars because I don't like how it is set up here. There is always a wait to be seated, which is fine, but there is nowhere to wait to be seated. We were stuck waiting around outside with nowhere to sit for 30 minutes. At that point we were hungry and just wanted to sit & relax, but it was more standing around to wait in line to place our order rather than having an actual server. The food was so good, but this place would be better off in a different location...the experience wasn't all that relaxing or enjoyable & it is a shame because the food is excellent here!!

My wife, two sons (9 yrs., 7 yrs.), and I enjoyed a delicious Saturday brunch at FoodE. The experience alone was worth the drive to Fredericksburg! We waited for about 5 minutes after arriving close to 11am. As the temperature was 65 degrees F in the sun, we were delighted to sit at an outdoor table along the main courtyard entrance. The restaurant gives you the option of sitting outside, inside, or at the community table, but we opted for whatever was "first available" to minimize our wait time. Since the restaurant wants to avoid having people line up in the courtyard dining area, which would be a claustrophobic, fire-code violating experience and delay servers as they carry dishes out from the kitchen, the front reception area limits the number of people who can stand in line at the ordering area. The outdoor tables are lovely if the weather is nice, but the interior space is tastefully decorated and cozy. I ordered the chicken and waffles. The buttermilk dipped fried chicken was exquisite, and the waffles had a nice texture. My wife had the "power scramble" dish of eggs, cheese, spinach, zucchini, and squash with a side of red potatoes. It was lovely and the vegetables tasted very fresh. While my 7 yr old son had the kid's waffles, my 9 yr. old son devoured half of his Fredericksburger. Portions are generous at FoodE, but with high quality and freshness of ingredients. For drinks, the morning coffee was delightful (with free mug refills). The sweet tea was nicely balanced. I would strongly recommend FoodE for brunch. For day trippers from the DC region, it's best to arrive at FoodE by 11am to reduce waiting time (this should be your first stop), then relax by strolling in the downtown area or going directly to the Battlefield Visitor Center, or your next activity. Service was outstanding. The staff care about maintaing a standard of excellence. We were asked 3 times if we had everything we needed. My wife asked for tabasco (hot) sauce to accompany her power scramble, and it came in a matter of seconds. We definitely look forward to visiting again! It was a treat to dine outdoors and experience sunny weather on the Saturday before Easter. If you are fortunate to dine outside, it will enhance your culinary experience!

I am a big Foode and love any brunch and dessert place, so I decided I would try Foode. For the most part their brunch is pretty good. I was not a big fan of their lunch/dinner food. I have only tried on dish but it was a rice dish and the rice was hard as if it was not cooked enough. My favorite breakfast food is biscuits and gravy and french toast. My finaces is Chicken and Waffles. We tried the chicken and biscuits and the Chicken and Waffles. My fiance was pleased with the Chicken and Waffles. The biscuits and gravy was overall good, however thr gravy could have used a little more seasoning. The potatoes that came with the biscuits and gravy were also under cooked. Overall I would say at least try the brunch once.

Wow. So I didn't have time to write it up during. But! It was wonderful. Service was my type non-intrusive but attentive drinks served in mason. My kind of place. Sat outside. Nice night. Pork shanks and ribeye. Plus a grilled cheese for small fry. Shank was wonderful. Served on black rice. Brussels sprouts. More on the rice in a bit. Ribeye with sweet potato and green beans. My wife asked for medium to rare Came perfect. Shank was wonderful. Now for rice. Wonderful!! Plump. Juiced. Just perfect. Asked the waitress how it was cooked. Cute response of not knowing! Could you ask the chef?? The server comes back and says the chef said the secret ingredient is water. Smiles. We snicker. She says she will go ask again. A moment later the sous chef arrives smiling. We shake hands and he tells us about the rice. So well done. If you wanna know how the rice is done I would suggest ordering the shank and then ask. What a pleasure to be around folks who treat food the way my family does. Fives stars. Wish we could give more. The mussels were wonderful as well

Amazin' find in downtown! Come here every summer to visit with family and each time we discover something surprising! Great concept, love the way it all goes down! My wifey and I went veggie for the night and shared a bunch of things. And get this - two apps, salad, entree, bottle of wine and dessert = $66! Unheard of. And when it all started flowin' to the table - we just kept praising the chef. PIMENTO CHEESE TOAST - Amazing bread wedges topped with hot melted pimento cheese dip with a tinge of spice. GRADE: A FRIED CHEVRE CROSTINI - HFC! Simply an epic combination of flavors and textures. The sage pesto on top of the crispy goat cheese was brilliant. Tangy pepper jam was nuts! GRADE: A+ HARVEST PLATE - Jeez, this was a surprising twist! Crispy and soft pita, topped with an edamame hummus and grilled eggplant and asparagus. Really great flavors. hummus a tad salty. One side of an eggplant too black/charred. GRADE: A-/B+ GRILLED KALE SALAD - Least favorite for one reason that could have made this a solid A salade! I began to realize that almost every dish we had had a grilled/charred component. Although we were enjoying everything immensely, the "blackenedness" that we tasted in everything got a bit old. Kale salad had great elements - the crumbled asiago, caramelized onions, but the grilled greens killed the dish. GRADE: C+ COFFEE FLOAT - What a way to end things! Local Hyperion coffee with epic vanilla iced cream and homemade caramel and salt.... Shoulda got TWO! GRADE: A+ Super friendly staff. Much luck... we can't wait to return to VA!

I love FoodE and this is a long term relationship - I've eaten here many, many times, and had a party in their event space. Beth's hosting and service is caring and diligent, and Joy's food is fresh, real, and satisfying. Just this week, I had the grilled tuna salad, new to me, and it was everything I could hope for: seared fresh tuna, grape tomatoes, salty olives, red potatoes, and a perfectly balanced herb vinaigrette. This is true summer food, seasonal and full of flavor, made from the best ingredients. I'm so grateful we have FoodE, and its new sister, Mercantile!

I really wanted to like this place. Their "cheesesteak" is really crumbled ground beef, gross! The Mac and cheese is really more like a pasta dish, penne with liquidy cheese sauce. 2 stars come from the pimento cheese toast, biscuits and flavored butter and French fries. Wouldn't return just for that though.

Really, really liked this place. My boyfriend and I came to Fredericksburg this weekend for a 4th of July getaway from DC. We asked for restaurant recommendations and everyone mentioned Foode. To start, we shared the pimento cheese bread--so cheesy and so good! I had their turkey burger and my boyfriend had the chicken salad sandwich. Both were fantastic. It's a very fun, relaxed environment and the service is great. I'd definitely recommend sitting outside if you can!

This place is very good. The downside is that it's farm table and when they're out they're out- I had my heart set on the chicken and waffle but settled for the chicken biscuit. The chicken from the chicken biscuit was extremely well prepared , the hot chocolate was rich but not overly so, and the butter pecan spread was awesomeness.

This is an adorable bistro situated in a kind of alley in between two other buildings. The atmosphere is great with a European-style, slightly secluded, narrow outdoor set of seats nestled in a brick alcove and just a bit of rustic flair. The menu is short, but there was more interesting things to try than 3 of us could order and eat. My favorite dish was the bbq porkloin sub, which was unlike any other pork sandwich I've ever had. The pork was thinly sliced--almost like cheesesteak meat--and then served with a light barbecue sauce on a cheddar-jalepeño roll. The thing was delicious. The turkey burger was also good. The burger itself was refreshingly moist compared to most and was well herbed. If you don't like your turkey burger with a lot of herbs baked in, I recommend avoiding this one, but I liked it. The beer selection was bottle only, but decent with a focus on local beers. If Virginia beer was better, this would be great, but as it stands it's only decent. Overall, this would have gotten four stars if not for the stand-out porkloin sub.

We loved this place! It was great to get a nice meal but order at a counter as to not have to tip (they tell you not to). I got the barbecue chicken with sautéed green beans and mashed potatoes and it was AMAZING! We will definitely return next time we are in Fredericksburg.

Always a great experience. The food is fresh, seasonal, well thought out, and portion sizes are generous yet not grotesque. It is our go-to for a satisfying meal that is situated in a comfortable, relaxed environment. I especially appreciate the sense of community I feel when we are there. The staff cares about the food and the people who walk through the door. While I'm not a huge fan of the 'order at the counter and pay upfront' method, I have begun to appreciate it as I learn the reasoning behind it. The owners are committed to offering the staff a living wage, so tipping isn't part of the culture they have created. Wine selection is modest, yet well rounded enough to pair with the nightly menu. Okay... I really like this place. Go try it out!

Background - I flipped burgers for two years in high school (05-06). Because of that, I have a fine-tuned, extremely pretentious view towards burgers. Ladies and gentleman, the Fredericksburger was the best burger I've had in over 9 years. The minute I lifted the burger to my mouth and took a whiff of it, like a fine wine, the aromas of the grill and spices took over and once I took a bite, that God-like first bite, I was destroyed. The worst part of the meal was the end, knowing that after that final bite, I would never experience such bliss until I would return (or unless I ordered another burger, but I was way too full). What an absolutely fantastic burger. The ambiance and decor is terrific, the servers are extremely helpful (not to mention, gorgeous), and the restaurant is in the best part of the city. I love this place and cannot wait to return. PS - Also ordered the Pimento Cheese Toast and it was super good.

I've had friends rave about this place so I've tried it out a couple times. The environment is quite adorable even if a bit cramped. I do like that they change up their menu, and that they always have at least one vegetarian meal on there. However, I don't find their food to be as fantastic as I was led on to believe. It's average Id say. I certainly don't prefer to wait 40 minutes for their food but I'd probably wait 15. I will say they had this strawberry cheesecake this one time which was absolutely amazing and I'm not a fan of cheesecake. I'd definitely recommend that if you find it on the menu again

I wanted to try the chicken and waffles at Sunday Brunch. Brunch was from 10 until 2 or 3. We got there at 11:30 and they were already out! The only day to get this dish is at brunch so you think they would have it not run out so early. Very disappointed, but got chicken and biscuit. Good.

This review is long overdue! My husband and I love this place! We would go here as often as we could when we lived in VA. One of the reasons I love Foode is because their menu is constantly changing and it's always farm to table food, and what's in season. I absolutely love their chicken and waffles they serve on Sunday. I can't wait to go back when we visit VA in a few months. I think foode was one of the few things I really liked about VA. The traffic drove me nuts! But thank god for foode. We've always been served promptly and I just love the various things they do with their decorations. Once it was umbrellas hung above throughout the open walkway eating area and the last time I went it was beach balls. You go in, get a menu, pick what you want, pay, and sit down for your food to be delivered to your table. The staff are wonderful and the food is superb!!!! Keep up the great work! Also, word of advice, if you really want to try the chicken and waffles, come early because they will run out! We went right as they opened.

All I can say is YES. It's such a different dining experience and atmosphere, the uniqueness of the place makes it fun and interesting. They ask you to order up front and then you're seated. The service is casual, and you don't have a server, so you're not expected to tip. All the girls who worked there were enjoyable and professional. The menu is small, but huge in flavor and they change it every week. They only serve beer and wine, but had a good selection. I had the burger, and my wife the NY strip. Both were well cooked. Highly recommend the bread appetizer - although they may have a different version at the time you visit!

The food was quite disappointing. I had high hopes given the name and backing of the restaurant. My plate of food looked, felt, and tasted like it had been prepared ahead of time. The fact I got it about 2 min after ordering also leads me to believe it was pre made. I would rather wait longer and have quality, fresh food, than pay for reheated junk. I had the grilled cheese "for big kids". The meat did not have a good flavor, the slices of meat were too thick and chunky for the sandwich, and the meat had pieces of fat on it. Also the cheese was rubbery. It really was unappealing all around and I couldn't eat it. Thinking about it while writing this actually repulses me, it was that bad! I can only speak for the one item. I certainly hope the rest of the menu is better.

Decided to finally try FoodE since they participated in Restaurant Week this year. I called to make a reservation since we had a party of 8, and even though they don't officially take reservations they took my information since they only have one table that would accommodate us. We went on a Friday night at 7 (also the last weekend of Restaurant Week) so we expected them to be busy. When we arrived they immediately took our orders and gave us our drinks and said they would hold off on the food til we sat down. There were several parties sharing the community table where we were supposed to sit. We didn't stress out about it - there is a large enough waiting area, we had our drinks, and didn't mind looking around at the unique art work and market offerings. After about 15-20 minutes they brought us fresh ham biscuits since we had been waiting. I was impressed - they don't accept reservations but were apologizing that our table wasn't ready. Also, the biscuits were fresh out of the oven and had clearly been made just for us. And, best of all they were delicious! We were seated shortly after and our food started coming out. There were no complaints from anyone at my table. The grits that accompany the crispy pork belly were amazing! I had never tried grits before. They were so good that we asked for some to go and the boys at our table began talking about naming a holiday after those grits - Thanksgritting, Gritsmas morning, Gritipendence Day. The side salads and entrees were equally tasty. I bought some hummus from the market to enjoy at home. Most of us left with to-go boxes because the portions were plentiful. Two days later I saw that grits were on the brunch menu and we returned just for those - and the mimosas. Again, we were not disappointed. The only thing that I frowned about was they were already out of ham biscuits - and we got there by 10:30. Those babies must go fast. I love that the menus are updated on Facebook and the FoodE website. I love the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. They don't accept tips but serve you like they do. My other favorite restaurant in Fredericksburg is Bistro Bethem and FoodE manages to offer similar local, organic dishes, a varying menu, and make every guest feel special at a third of the price! I look forward to seeing what's on the menu in the coming months and will definitely return over and over.

Been intending to try Foode for a while now. Finally had the chance tonight & all I could think about after we left was all the amazing meals we've missed out on by waiting so long to get there! Foode is hands down THE best restaurant in town. I had the braised short ribs & they were excellent - smoky, tender & savory. The accompanying polenta was smooth & creamy and the greens were just right. The apple crisp was good, but my husbands banana muffin w/bacon buttercream frosting was out of this world. We highly recommend Foode!!! We're already talking about going back for lunch.

Wow! This restaurant defines different. And I mean different in a good way. My wife and I came here for the first time and was impressed. You pick up a menu at the register, order and then take your seat. There is even a community table for any who want to sit mingle with people and socialize. Our drinks were in old canning cans which was neat. Their philosophy is you should pay and relax the whole rest of your visit. No tips are necessary. The food is fresh and made to perfection. First trip I ordered a burger and fries. Burger came with tomatillo salsa which was delicious. Best fries I've ever had, the perfect touch of herbs and salt. Please check it out!

Foode is on my list of "must eats" for the Fredericksburg Area. It's crowded, it's a bit noisy, and you might get stuck sitting at the big "community" table. If you do, embrace it and make a new friend. Their food is outstanding, most of it is locally produced, and they are a perfect example of what a "non-chain" restaurant should be. Try them, you will like them. The ONLY downside is their unusual hours... they are only open until 8 on weeknights, and 2 or so on Saturday / Sunday. I believe this is a "quality of life" issue for the staff, which I understand, but I'd eat there 2-3x more often if their hours more closely resembled mine...

Took my best friend who was in town from California here. Greeted as soon as we arrived. Friendly staff, decent timing on food delivery. I had the chargrilled cheeseburger with garlic aioli and sweet thick bacon with foode fries and chipotle ketchup, she had the slow roasted pork bowl. We shared a bit of each and neither disappointed. We also tried the fried green tomatoes and they were the best I have ever had. Will be coming back here very soon!

This is a very unique business in Fredericksburg. I've never had organic food before, but since I've been doing Weight Watchers for a few months now I've been eating healthier. I saw a Groupon for FOODE and decided to try them out before buying the Groupon. The turkey burger I got was outstanding! It was so good that I went back the next day for lunch to get it again. Their portion sizes are perfect, not too much and not too little. It is a little pricey for lunch, but it's because of all the organic, local foods. To tell you the truth I spend just as much there as I do at a local place down the street from them and FOODE serves more than just sandwiches and pastries. The food is so fabulous, I'm willing to pay a little more. Also, they don't accept tips so you save that money.

FoodE is simply amazing. I have yet to be disappointed. They have an outstanding selection of natural & organic & local dishes. The beer list is something to write home about. I have had the fries, the chicken, the mashed potatoes, the chocolate chip cookies, sweet tea & the free fruit water! I would eat here every day if I could---it is priced right too!!! They have a kids menu & small market as well!!! I have come to the the conclusion that is truly is one of the top places to dine in Fredericksburg!!!

If you love supporting local farmers, then this is the place to go. Their menu varies depending on season & availability and it does not disappoint. The food is delicious and the service is what I would call "just enough". They are attentive, but not hovery.

I've been wanting to try Foode since before they even opened. We finally got around to visiting them a couple of weekends ago, and their power was out! So we had to postpone our visit until last weekend. Their set-up is a little different: you walk in and find a menu, then you order at the register, then wait to be seated (although you aren't on an official waiting list), then you get a table, then your food is brought out. You get your drinks while you are standing there (I ordered water, and there is a water cooler where you serve yourself). I asked the girl at the register what happens when your food is brought out before you get seated, and she said that has never happened. So what happens next? Our food comes out before we get seated! But, luckily, a table became available within a minute or two, and I was able to enjoy my soup before it got cold. There was nothing on our table, no condiments or anything, so I don't know what you do if you need ketchup or salt, but I am sure they are around there somewhere. So the soup I got was cream of mushroom and it was really good. I got a bowl and my husband had to help me eat it. For my entree, I got the vegan plate, which was grilled potatoes, grilled eggplant, and something green, like kale (I forgot). It was all good. My husband got the veggie risotto, and he said it was really good. We both got dessert- he got a cheesecake custard, and I got a rice pudding brulee. They were both good. Afterwards I stopped to talk to Beth, one of the co-owners, and she asked me my thoughts on the place. I told her the food was excellent, but the whole ordering and paying before you eat was kind of weird. She said the reasoning behind that was so that you don't have to tip your server, that they were all about saving the public money. I can get on board with that, as quirky as it seems to me. The food was great, and we can deal with it. We will be back!

This place is AMAZINGGGGG!!! Went for the first time about 8 or 9 months ago because i had bought a groupon and read the reviews about how good it was on yelp. Since then ive been there 4 or 5 times (Which is alot for me since its about 25-30 miles south and im not a fan of driving too far for food) Me and my friends are the types to try everything so we buy about 4 appetizers to share then each get a meal and end up sharing and then share a few desserts. The chicken is hugeeeeee and by far my favorite thing on the entire menu. The pita chips and hummus is my favorite appetizer although its only been served once in the 5 times ive been there (they base there menu off of whats fresh that day so the menu changes daily) The pork chop is also wonderful and the loaves of bread for appetizers with the oil dipping sauce is to die for. The atmosphere is so homey with food being served family style and everyone shares tables with each other. I would and have recommended this place to everyone i know and i cant wait to get back there as soon as possible ive been craving it

This restaurant had really good food but needs a larger venue! Seating is limited and the ordering process is awkward. You have to go into the small restaurant, get handed a paper menu, make your choice, pay and then hope to find a seat.

Finally made it here for lunch with the ladies to try out the restaurant I've been hearing so much about. Three of us had the curry chicken salad sandwich, one had a regular chicken salad sandwich, and one had a chef's salad. Everyone was happy with their meals, which were super fresh-tasting and served within ten minutes of ordering. The potato salad side that accompanied the sandwiches tasted great; the serving was on the small-ish side. Maybe I've gotten accustomed to the super-size servings at many restaurants, where there is often food left-over at the end of the meal. After leaving the restaurant, I realized that the portions were actually just right. We cleaned our plates and left completely satiated without feeling like we needed to be rolled back to the car. We sat outside at cute wrought-iron tables. Our server checked in with us once to make sure we were enjoying the meal. Otherwise, we were left to ourselves, which was nice. I will surely be going back to try more of the menu offerings.

Wanted lunch at one of my favorites in Fredericksburg, Jake and Mike's or SoupTaco, neither was open so I wandered around and stumbled upon Foode. Woohoo! Amazing! I had the Apple Crostini, a Roasted Tomato Soup, and Cran Apple Salad. Salad was good, fresh. Soup was delicious, so fresh and tomato flavor was sooooo good, especially after winter, tasted like summer is here! The Apple Crostini was amazing! I could eat a dozen!!! I live in Woodbridge, I will definitely be a return customer.

Food wasn't as good as hyped on Yelp. Way too hot inside to enjoy the atmosphere of the place. Pork chop was good, but nothing special. My wife's fried rice was okay, a little on the bland side. Service was unimpressive.

As soon as we walked through the door we were greeted by a friendly staff member who gave us menus and told us to order at the register when we were ready and take a seat anywhere. The menu is good, maybe a bit limited, but we tried the cheese pimento bites, the chevre crostini and the burger and enjoyed all of it. The burger was a little under cooked, but the flavor was right on, the fries were good, very hot! The cheese pimento wasn't bad, but the real treat was the crostini, which we ordered an additional time because the flavors were just amazing. We went using a groupon, which often times vendors are hesitant to really give you good service or try to upsell you, here they told us we hadn't met our $40 yet and we could put the credit towards anything in the "market". Throughout the service was prompt and very friendly. All of this is in addition to the ideology behind the food. Locally sourced, healthy options organic, no hormones, no antibiotics - Awesome, well versed in their wine selection, truly impressive. I would definitely go back despite the fact that I live in Arlington.

Updating my review based on latest experience. Went for Sunday Bruch with 3 others. I was looking forward to their signature brunch dish which won Best in Virginia. We were told a 20 minute wait, which was really 45 minutes. That's OK, it's a small place and they can't help it if people don't move along. Majorly disappointed in my dish though. While the coating on the chicken was tasty, the chicken was really dried out to the point of being indelible. The waffle had a wad of butter just dropped in the middle, no spreading it out. If that was the case, they should serve it on the side. The waffle was overdone and dried out too. It might as well have been an Eggo Waffle. The only reason I didn't go down lower in the rating was that the others in my party pronounced their omelets yummy.

The food is extraordinary and specially gourmet for a crazy good price! On top of that, the service is friendly, quick, and organized. The courtyard atmosphere is beautiful to enjoy. Recommend it highly!

Adorable and tasty place. So glad we stopped through on our road trip. I got the chicken hash and my brother got the sausage gravy and biscuit. His was probably the best sausage and gravy I've had. Mimosas come in a cute mason jar. :)

The grits are to die for... Keep in mind, I hate grits, but Foode is as good as it gets! OMG! The bomb!

Great concept. We didn't know what to expect when we walked in and began ordering at the counter. We did not wait to be seated and enjoyed the atmosphere. The main dishes came out pretty quickly and were very good. I had a vegetarian dish of grits and vegetables. Everything was fresh and cooked perfectly. The dessert was a simple biscuit, strawberries with ice cream but was very good. Overall, this is a very cool place with great food. More on the concept - since you pay at the counter before you are seated there is no tipping. This gives you a high quality meal while saving the 15 - 20% you would usually tack on.

Not what I expected. I believe they are popular because of good marketing not the food. The lettuce had seen better days

Wow, this was definitely worth a stop in this small little city. I hear the menu changes weekly and all the food is locally purchased. Anyways, the staff is amazing, it's not traditional serving so they do not ask for tips. I guarantee you'll want to tip them anyways after the service and quality of the food. At least I did. The wait is kinda long, but hey! You want your food fresh, right? They don't take reservations, but it's a steady flow of customers. I would definitely go back if ever in town, which is sadly probably never.

Once again, Foodē did an awesome meal for my date and I last night. My fish dish was fantastic! Her chicken was very good, too. Where else can you get an extraordinary dinner for two, and a bottle of wine, for $54? Thanks again! See you again soon.

What a let down. One of the first times that the Yelp community has let me completely let me down. Foode was a complete bust, and by the complete, I mean total, unadulterated bust. Where do I begin? Well, after reading all the great reviews about the chicken and waffles here I was pumped to arrive for Sunday brunch hungry. To my disappointment I was told they had run out of chicken and waffles. Come on guys! It's noon on Sunday and you are already out of food? Isn't there a Safeway down the street you can go buy more chicken? Why even put it on the menu if you are going to run out after being open for a couple of hours? We instead opted for the "big nasty" and the biscuits and gravy. Both were horrible and completely inedible. After we ordered the food came out lightning fast...like in just 90 seconds, so fast it put McDonalds to shame. The food was so stale and cold that I swear they had made it for some other party and it had been sitting out marinating for who know how long. You could tell because the biscuit in the biscuit and gravy were cold, and the egg texture was very plasticy resembling play-doh. The biscuits were just pathetic. They were hard, stale, and nothing like what good southern biscuits should be like. The gravy again was cold and just shocking that they would serve a dish in this poor state. My wife couldn't even force herself to eat this dish, but was too polite to send it back. I ordered the "big nasty," which turned out to be a "big nasty mistake." It was basically a pile of overcooked and undercooked ingredients (is that even possible?) piled on a plate and drizzled with mayo. Total amateur hour. The chef (if you can even call him that) had attempted to place pulled pork atop some vegges and wild rice... and then have the nerve to charge $14 for this. It resembled a dish I used to make in college when I was broke and scavenged the frigde for leftovers and combined that with rice and ramen to make myself a barely edible meal. The worst part was the wild brown rice was even worse than the rice I would microwave in the college dorm. It had been SEVERELY UNDERCOOKED to the point where I think I had chipped my tooth while attempting to grind away at the kernels. In fact, the couple next to had the misfortune of ordering the same dish and said they "needed to make an appointment with the dentist after this meal!" The pulled pork was burnt so badly I got strings of pork charcoal stuck in between my teeth. I immediately notified the server that I was totally displeased with the dish, and she said she would talk to the kitchen. The server and the kitchen actually had the nerve to tell me that I WAS WRONG and that was just the style of the rice and that's how the dish is made. Are you kidding me? Do they even taste their food here before they serve it? Isn't a chef supposed to do is taste his own food before he serves it to customers? What a load of crap! She did offer to replace my dish, but since they were out of fried chicken and waffles and the staff had managed to completely ruin the most expensive dish on the menu, I just opted for a salad, which was barely passable. In fact, our server never even offered (or did) take the "big nasty" off my check and proceeded to charge me for it even though the salad that replaced it was much cheaper. A lot of yelpers think Foode is inexpensive. I think not. It is a complete waste of money and you can find much better food at a restaurant that actually cares about customers enjoying their meal and not telling them they are WRONG, especially when the server knows they are lying to your face, but they don't want to go through the trouble of making things right. What a horrible excuse for a restaurant.

I've tried my best to become a regular at FoodE in the years since they opened. Any failure in this quest is due to my schedule and bank account, not the food or service. Their burger is still a great choice and one of the best I've ever had in a restaurant. It's available for lunch or dinner (usually with a bit of a twist). They typically offer a few menu standards and then mix things up to get the entrees interesting and seasonal. The salads are especially good in this respect, even if you're not traditionally a salad person. My favorite time at FoodE is brunch. I get what I call the "Carly Special" which sadly has not caught on with the owners Joy and Beth - it's the chicken biscuit with a side of whatever flavored butter they have that day (typically 50 cent extra charge - worth it). You then deconstruct the sandwich and eat the biscuit with the butter. Add a mimosa if you're feeling naughty. Note: FoodE also does catering and has an event space two doors down that can be rented out. I used this service for a graduation party in March 2013 and they were fantastic the entire process. I was very happy with the food and the way they worked with my budget (and never made me feel bad about not being able to throw bags of money at this meal). I had about 12 people there and they ALL raved about the food, even after the event. Annie was our server and she did such a great job taking care of us.

Reasonable prices, communal dining, friendly staff, and most importantly, well-prepared dishes using high-quality ingredients are reasons to come to Foode. (There's actually an accent over the e so you say "foodie.") I searched for a good spot to take my honey for V-Day and Foode was the answer. The restaurant's acclaim combined with its menu of foods prepared with locally grown ingredients seemed right up his alley. After enjoying Foode's porchetta sandwich--moist pork roast between slabs of ciabetta--Tom N said it'd be hard for him to go back to Taylor Gourmet. He'll have to post a separate review to describe what made him so happy, but what I can say is that he can't wait to return to Foode. My entree was their mac and cheese, which comes with assorted add-ons, like bacon and braised winter greens. In all the excitement of being in such a cool and happening spot, I somehow missed these options, womp womp. Anyway, I appreciated how the noodles were tossed in real cheese and had a comforting quality to them, as mac and cheese should, but I thought the dish could have used a tinge more salt. Tom N disagreed and said it was perfect. Still, I'm giving Foode 4.5 stars for the following reasons: 1.Great service 2. Cute setting (housed in the basement of an old building; you enter through an alley that's great for alfresco dining in warmer weather) 3. Cool concept (mentioned communal tables, order at the counter) 4. Use of fresh, local ingredients 5. Budget-friendly brunch What impressed me most about Foode was that they make over familiar American comfort foods, making them more high-quality than what you'd find at a greasy spoon and also not going over the top with the more decadent ingredients.

We went in for their Sunday brunch a few weeks ago and waited outside for over 45 minutes for a table. We became impatient and stepped inside to see if we would be seated and people who came after us were already almost done eating. We ordered and finally were sat. I had the chicken Apple sandwich, my husband had the gravy sausage plate and my daughter had the waffle. My sandwich was so dry it was unpleasant to eat. And my husbands was so bland he needed salt, pepper and a load of hot sauce. The waffle was super heavy and they barely gave us enough butter and syrup to eat one quarter of it. The iced tea and mimosa were good. But overall will never go for brunch again. May try dinner.

As a Chef I hate to write these reviews, but in this case, I must. Came here with a co-worker after hearing stellar reviews and recommendations. Honestly, I was extremely disappointed. Nothing is worse than having high expectations of a restaurant and then experience one of the most horrible experiences in my hospitality life. First, we came to this restaurant and had to wait 25 minutes while numerous tables were empty and open. One of these empty tables would eventually become our home, why 25 minutes? Your guess is as good as mine. Secondly, I wanted to taste more than just one option so I chose the pizzette and black bean burger. The pizza came first and at first examination it was obviously pulled from the oven prematurely, hence the still cold cheese and uncooked interior dough. The head scratcher for me was the overly done exterior of the dough but soft snotty center, and under dressed with sauce, which makes me believe that they pre cook their dough, then blast the pizza to finish it. The black bean burger was not cheesy nor moist. It was a dry sandy hockey puck..... My co worker had the chicken and waffles, the chicken again pre cooked and baked till dry before sending it to our table. The waffle was also undercooked and doughy. This next sentence is to the Chef "Get your drive and passion back, don't sacrifice quality for turns of dining, cook food ala minute" Whoever is running your kitchen needs to change their direction and not ruin this great restaurant that you have built. Regrettably, Garth Hansen

Nice atmosphere, great staff and laid service. Not the traditional restaurant. Scallops are to die for. Couldn't stop myself from eating my daughter's from her Fredericksburg burger, I had the Stripped Bass delicious and my husband had the Shrimp and Grits. A must to visit whenever you're in downtown Fredericksburg. My husband and I shared a bottle of the Paraiso Pinot Noir. We will come again. See you on our next visit FoodE.

We have driven between Raleigh and DC so many times, but it never occurred to us before to get off the highway a bit and see where Yelp led us. It led us here this recent Sunday during brunch time. Parking wasn't a problem on a side street. Having never been to Fredericksburg before, I have no idea if it is ever a problem or not. This restaurant has an unusual way of doing things, but the good news is, there is enough eager staff to lead you through the slight confusion. It starts with a gal at the entrance. She told us there was room for us if we were okay with sitting outside. Husband is normally never okay with outside, but he must have been starving because he okay'd it in an instant. We were handed a paper menu and told to go inside. So you walk through the corridor and go to the register inside. It is a small room...easy to see why there was no place for us in there. We placed our order and were told which table to sit at outside. In our case, it was the second one on the left. (not that anyone was in the ones around us, but at least we were told what to do). I inquired about the restroom and was told it was just one and an "unmarked door". Good news! Soft toilet paper! Seriously nice after a weekend in DC of way less than soft! Back at the table, our unsweetened tea arrived via mason jars. Shortly thereafter, Husband got his Cheesy Black Bean Burger with Potato Salad, and I got my Char-Grilled Chicken Salad Sandwich with Potato Salad. Instantly I was in envy of the black bean burger. Husband did share one bite (and I made it a good one)...it tasted as good as it looked! As for my plate, I can say that both items were quite good, but I didn't feel like they went together. Both were full of mayo, which is certainly not a bad thing, but it was too much mayo on one plate, plus the bread was white, so a LOT of rich whiteness. I ended up taking most of the bread off just to try to offset a bit of the high calorie content. (sad, I know). Somehow, based on the description of the sandwich (rather than the name of it), I had expected a grilled chicken sandwich, rather than a grilled chicken SALAD sandwich. I confess with all the confusion of figuring out what to do here, I didn't read everything correctly. My fault. I would happily go back, but would order differently for myself. Also, I understand now, after coming home and reading previous reviews, that tipping is not expected nor encouraged here. I wish we had known that because we left feeling really bad that we were not given an opportunity to do so. (they don't ask for one when you pay in advance for your food)...and we had no cash with us. Considering the energetic happy hard-working attitude of the staff that we experienced (watch them come down those narrow brick stairs carrying plates of food...oh my!), leaving gratuity is something that we personally, would LIKE to do. Love love love the idea of this restaurant...the quality of ingredients, the attitude...and the colorful umbrellas are just plain brilliant!

We went last night to celebrate my husbands 40th birthday. The restaurant is beautiful. The staff is helpful and friendly. We all gave the food a 5 star rating. Steak, Fish and burgers were amazing. I love that it is local farm to table. ONE BIG criticism! Buy condiments without high fructose corn syrup. I was very disappointed in this choice. Kind of took away from the fresh and local healthy feel.

My friend and I came here for a break from wedding errands after our innkeeper suggested some lunch spots in downtown Fredericksburg. Okay, it was the only place he recommended. Once he said "local and organic" I was pretty much sold. And as if I needed more convincing, as soon as you see the Foode sign out on the sidewalk and walk towards the entrance, you're greeted by exposed brick and a display of colorful umbrellas above you. It didn't keep all of the rain out but it sure looked awesome. When you walk into the establishment you are greeted by several friendly faces. They hand you a menu - something that is swapped out weekly based on what is in season. They ask for your name and then go set up a table for you. You then order at the register (GREAT if you are splitting checks) and then they show you to your table. Another reason for me to love this place: they served my ice water in big mason jars. Was this place designed with me in mind? It took awhile for the food to arrive but maybe I was hungry (and my friend stepped out to field some last minute wedding calls from vendors), but once the food came, it sure didn't disappoint. I got a burger that was so tasty and juicy. The fries were to die for - perfectly crisp and seasoned. My friend really enjoyed her chicken parmesan sandwich - the cheese was actually fried cheese. How cool! Overall Foode is very clean, bright, and is a hopping spot. We came a little early for lunch and it didn't take long for the place to fill up both inside and on the (colorful umbrella covered) patio. The staff is really nice and very accommodating to your needs. And even better - you can't always get local and organic food for a steal. My burger and fries was just under $11 with tax. I've had worse burgers for more than that. I'm really happy I stumbled upon this place. I'm not in Fredericksburg often but if I ever found myself here, I would totally come back. In fact, a couple of friends heard my rave reviews that they ate there twice that same weekend!

The atmosphere is very unique shabby chic from the moment you step down the outdoor alley to the front door. Inside it is very small, which provides a more intimate dining experience. If I had to guess, there would be approximately less than 50 seats total. Per Foode's menu, this is how they roll: -grab a menu, hopefully you'll find something you like. -if you do, walk up to the counter, order and pay. -to make things extra easy: if you order our housemade iced tea, citrus-infused water or coffee, we'll get you started. then, it's up to you to get as many refills as you like at one of our drink stations. They also have a no tip policy because they don't provide your traditional table-side service. 3 menu items were already "sold out" by 7:00 p.m.: Mixed Mushroom Pizzette Oven Roasted Chicken Char-grilled burger The pimiento cheese toast was tasty. The bread was warm and cheese was good. There was just more bread than cheese. More cheese is always better....in my opinion! I ordered the harvest plate for my entree. It consisted of asiago-roasted potatoes, mushrooms and grilled boc choy. My first choice was the mushroom pizzette (sold out!) and I must say that I wish I would have had it instead. Or an entire loaf of the pimiento cheese toast.

Easily worth the trip from the city. Foode is an anomaly in Fredericksburg being that I've had an amazing brunch, let alone meal here than compared to many other places I've been to. Carly C has been mentioning Foode to me for quite some time. We ended up getting there about 20 minutes before opening for Easter brunch and were the second party to wait in line. While waiting the line grew up to a block down the street! Luckily for us we didn't get there at opening, otherwise we would've been waiting for a while. Foode doesn't take reservations hence the wait. The ordering system is also cafeteria style. You are given a menu and then order at the cash register, then seated. Food is extremely small. I think the restaurant probably only seats about 25 or so people inside with more seating outside. Luckily for us we got our own table for two instead of seating at the communal table. To the recommendation of the gf, I ordered the Big Nasty, which was basically a fried chicken biscuit with melted cheese and a "side" of potatoes. Now for $11, you get a local organic chicken, a house made biscuit (amazing), farm eggs, melted chedder sauce, and local potatoes. I also wanted their french toast but the Big Nasty easily put me down. It was also one of the best meals I've had in a long time, for $11 too! The cheddar sauce used to cover the biscuits was delicious as well as the chicken and eggs. We also shared an order of biscuits with their brown sugar pecan butter. Not only were their biscuits the best I've had pretty much anywhere in the DC/NoVA area, but the pecan butter was crack. Yes, crack. Give me a bowl of it and I'd probably eat it alone until I get diabetes or gain 30lbs. I also had their beer sangria, although good, was not worth really mentioning. I wanted to get their bloody geisha however they weren't making them that day. Our meal together with drinks was only $48. Amazing for what you get. Foode prides themselves on serving all local products and I really wish Foode was more accessible. Easily worth the trip from the city or anywhere else. I look forward to coming back and trying their dinner menu.

Yummy! We started with the pimento cheese toast. Tasty but I would have liked thinner bread slices. The heirloom tomato salad was well presented and dressed with the right amount of dressing. The hanger steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly. I wish the polenta was creamier. The cookies were warm and chewy but I would have liked them to have more brown sugar vs white. I liked the short wine list which made choosing easy and wine by the glass offering was good. We definitely will return. Only major downside was they were out of a few items. The front of the house concept of only having waiters bring food and ordering at the counter, refilling your own drink was odd. There is no tipping but I wonder what the hourly rate is for staff; are they better off than traditional wait staff?

Still amazing. Took the bf here for breakfast. He had the big nasty which was a beef brisket, potatoes, and fried egg. I had the breakfast plate which was grits, cooked apples, fried egg, and fried chicken. Both were very delicious. To drink I went with the Orange infused tea and he got the super juice. While the super juice was good I don't see myself ordering it again. Left the cellar very satisfied.

OK, they have good food, but there is a major problem I have with this restaurant. Almost every time my mother and I go there they are out of what I want. Wouldn't you think that if you run a popular restaurant in downtown Fred you would stock up? If you do not go when they first open you shouldn't waste your time going there because they will most likely be out of what you want.

We were first-timers and went for brunch around 12:30. We got there at a perfect time because we got a seat right after ordering our food. After we sat down, the flood gates opened a few people had to wait a little while, still not too long. The atmosphere is adorable!! I am from Richmond and it has been a large adjustment moving to Fredericksburg because of the lack of local restaurants with great food and a great vibe. Foode nails the atmosphere category! The food is wonderful!! We ordered the chicken and waffles and the chicken biscuit with a side of potatoes. Only slight issue was with temperature of the waffle. It wasn't warm, but the chicken on top was, so it wasn't a major issue. The service was very quick and efficient! They were all very friendly. I ordered a Mimosa and they asked what flavor (I didn't know they had flavors). I told them I didn't know they had flavors and looked for the flavors on the menu which weren't listed. She never told so I said just plain I guess. For $9 each, I wish they would've taken the time to tell me. Prices were very reasonable! The Mimosa was good, but wouldn't pay $9 for one again. Maybe the flavored Mimosa would've been worth it! Food is great and worth the price in my opinion, especially for the quality! Definitely will be back!

I ordered the mac and cheese. For an extra $1.00, I ordered the chorizo and tomatoes topping. My mac and cheese dish tasted okay. It wasn't great enough for me to want to come back again. I thought the menu would have more tasty options for a weekend afternoon meal, I wasn't impressed with their menu selection. I don't think I'll be eating here again.

The wait time for this place was a little ridiculous. They don't have any way of telling you when it's your time to go in so you kind of have to stay on the one street it's on so you don't loose your place. There is NO place to sit outside. But I wi say when I got inside, the place was adorable. The food was really good. I had chicken and waffles. The size of it was big, so I had to bring some home. Overall, if you can stand the wait, it's a good place to try.

Great staff, great food - we're there every week. Just wish there was more seating! Wait time can be a serious negative, especially on the weekends. And how about a Foode truck on or near campus? Would totally clean up...

Yet another amazing experience at Foode! After my friends/clients introduced me to Zibibbo, I felt it only right to share one of my favorite spots with them; Foode. It had been a little while since my last visit, so it was totally a win-win in my mind to invite them to join me to Sunday brunch there. I have also been on the hunt for the best chicken and waffles in NoVa. It was about time to try out Foode's famous version. Just as suspected, it lived up to the "get it before it sells out" hype. How do places like Foode get their waffles so light and crispy? I'll master it one day, but I'm kind of stumped on it for now... I could tell my friends were definitely curious when they first arrived to the packed like a sardine can restaurant. It also took some explaining to them about how Foode works in terms of getting on the waiting list, ordering your food and drinks, and then getting seated. To someone new (myself included) the concept can be a bit awkward. Trust me though, Foode runs like a well oiled machine. Even if it seems like it's not going to work, they make it happen. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy. Your in good hands. I was really excited to try the mimosa on this trip. With the level of freshness present in everything else at Foode, I knew that their mimosa wouldn't be an exception. My assumption was correct. It was made with fresh juice. Nice! I hadn't even realized that one of my friends had ordered the bloody geisha (a bloody Mary with sake) until one of the servers brought it over to the table. When he let me have a sip of it I was instantly jealous. It was soooo good! Thick, spicy, and fresh. I loved what you could see ground horseradish dispersed throughout it. I'll definitely be ordering one of those next time. On this trip I decided to order The Big Nasty. Yes, yes, chicken and waffles was the original reason for the trip, but one of my friends had opted to order it (even though I think he wanted The Big Nasty too). Sense the group of us is fine with sharing, we all were able to partake it each of the dishes, so no one missed out on anything. I will say that Foode's version of C & W is awesome, it just didn't make it to the top of my list. To be clear though, it was great, and I'm really happy I have a place to get it in my area when I don't want to or can't make it up to Birch and Barley in DC. My dish, The Big Nasty, which surprisingly isn't big or nasty, was quite enjoyable. That sweet potato biscuit was inspiring. It was fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside; the sign of a homemade biscuit. It also paired very well with the chorizo sausage patty. You can tell that this dish was well thought out before being put of the menu. If it wasn't, Chef Joy is a true miracle worker to have just off-the-cuff put it together. To top off the trip, the manager (gosh I feel terrible that I can't remember her name...) remembered me from my last trip, by name. Amazing. She is amazing. With all the people she comes across in a day, how she can remember me by name months after meeting me is crazy. I'm so impressed. I'm also so embarrassed because I can't remember her's. I'll be asking, and remembering, next time. Thanks Foode!

The atmosphere is great! We chose to eat outside as the weather was perfect. We started with the autumn chef salad. It was very fresh and delicious. My husband then had the 'tonight's burger' with fries. The fries were homemade and very crisp and tasty. He said the burger was a little bland as the ricotta cheese didn't have much taste but was still good. He ordered it medium but the outside was very charred. I had the pan roasted pork chop. The flavor was delicious and was cooked perfectly. The sides were yummy as well. Loved the atmosphere as much as the food.

Call me crazy, but although I love Sunday brunch with the gals, I adore a Sunday brunch with me and a good read. Perhaps that's why my Sunday brunch experience with Foode wasn't as hectic as others who have commented. It pays to be alone after all! I've been wanting to try Foode for sometime and my main marker for restaurants that are open for brunch is that meal. While their lunch and dinner menus are something I intend to check out, my happy place is definitely coffee, mimosas, and a plate full of deliciousness. Easy like Sunday morning. I walked up around 13:00, an hour before they close, and they were sold out of nearly half of their brunch offerings. As a vegetarian, this only meant one item was out of the question for me, but for others, I could see why this would be problematic. I waited about a minute before I was called in and was the second person in the queue. My immediate thought was how little tables they have inside! I was expecting this place to be a larger restaurant, but their inside seating capacity seemed to be only 25-30, including a 10-person communal table. Again, pays to be alone ;) Decided on the french toast with berry compote and asked the super kind cashier, who I'm certain was an owner, to surprise me with a substitution for the sausage. Food came out in about 15 and for $12, the amount of food and quality you receive was exactly what you'd pay for. She subbed my sausage for a delicious "mini omelette" with peppers, cauliflower, onions, etc. which I ended up liking more than the french toast itself. I look crispy on the outside french toast, and this one was "eggy" and came off a bit under cooked :/ If it wasn't for my sweet craving, it definitely wouldn't have rated very high. Regarding ambiance, you know the drill. Foode is super unique to Freddie and I support the farm-to-plate initiative 150%. The decor is lovely, trendy, and fun and I'd dine here alone or with friends anytime of the day. The only downside is the capacity, so if you're coming with a group, I'd definitely arrive early or factor in a solid wait.

WOW. Chicken & Waffles done RIGHT. This restaurant is something special. Dining here is a true experience. You give your name to the hostess and await a table. While waiting you can peruse the menu [this can be a pain in inclement weather because they recently changed their rules and don't allow folks to wait inside -- SHUCKS!]. The hostess will let you know when it's your turn to make your way inside to place your order and pay (no gratuity accepted). After placing your order, your table should be ready. Be sure to try the Chicken & Waffles sometime...they're incredible!! :)

The first time me and my friend came to experience all of the great reviews! It was worth the trip! The staff was very friendly. All beautiful smiles and great personalities. It was such a warm and cozy atmosphere. Very small and very intimate. The food was perfect and the wine was great! I recommend this place to everyone!

Love the feeling of walking in to this place. Smiling staff and excellent food. The owner/chef always walk around to greet guest. Everything is organic and cooked when your order. They buy all produce and meat from local vendors so it lends to community support. They have all kinds of good food like pork chops to Asian-inspired dishes! One of our favorites for sure!

My wife and I wanted to celebrate our anniversary with something different, so I called Beth, and set up to attend the chef's table dinner on a Saturday evening. We were led to a separate kitchen and was greeted by Beth, who remembered from our email conversations that it was our 11th anniversary and explained that we could just sit and eat or interact with the chef while he cooked the five course meal for us. Our chef, Joe, had a meal just for us that was fantastic! It was laid out on a menu sheet that was placed on top of the table setting for me and my wife. I will admit, something in every course did not appeal to me in some way or another. But throughout the course of the dinner, I was amazed at how everything was prepared and the ingredients that were used to complement each other very well. First course was two large fried shrimp with pickled ramp remoulade, which was explained to us to be a type of tartar sauce. Second course was grilled kale, which I was certain I would not like, with pine nuts and organic cherries and shaved carrots. Third course was an Atlantic salmon cooked to our liking, sat atop a risotto with arugula and strawberries. To clear our palate before the fourth course, we were served a house made coconut-lime sorbet...awesome. Next up was a cooked to our liking hangar steak cut and spread on top of chilled soba noodles. And to finish off the dinner was dessert which consisted of a shortcake made with ginger and lemon with fresh cut strawberries in between the two halves and a scoop of house made vanilla bean ice cream on the side. Even though some things didn't sound too appealing on the menu, chef Joe made me eat my words, almost literally! I greatly enjoyed everything that was prepared for us, and wish I could have seconds! During the meal, the chef explained the courses for us and we were able to have a wonderful conversation with him and Beth since we were the only ones in the private kitchen. One of the interns working in the kitchen said that he was first hooked up with Foode when he came for Sunday brunch and had the chicken and waffles and just had to have more, so now he works there! We will definitely be back to try their other dishes in the upcoming months! Thank you Beth and chef Joe for making this anniversary a very memorable and delicious night for my wife and I!!

This was a great find! We actually got there and many of the items were already sold out but we found great, fresh and well prepared meals. This was quite a treat to have farm to table food with a great atmosphere and great staff! At the end of our meal we were able to talk with the owners who were so passionate about their food and what they do! Quite inspiring. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to another trip when we are in the area. Thank you!

We recently visited Foode after we heard some really good reviews. We were told by the host it would be about 20 minutes but if we sat at the community table it might be faster so we said OK and were seated in about 5 minutes. We found out that there is no waiter and that you simply pay for your meal at a register and get your own drink and wait to receive your food. We didn't mind that at all but it was definitely different. My GF and I sat across from each other at first but it was so loud I went to the other side so we could hear each other talk. We waited for about 40 minutes before our food arrived and it was just ok. She had the pork chop and I had the chicken and they were good but nothing special. The one thing I thought was absolutely amazing however was the asiago pudding. It was really rich and heavy so I only had a couple bites but it was really good. The chicken and pork-chop were just OK; cooked well but very mild seasoning. The best part of the experience was meeting new people at the community table and talking with them. Also, their community table is starting to fall apart a bit, as I would lean in, the boards would bend and I thought it was going to break off. I'm glad we tried but have no plans to go back any time soon.

Service? Great. Atomsphere? Not bad, just different. Food? Not good at all and very bland. Very disappointing. Had ny steak and my husband had pork chops. Yea, we probably won't be coming back. Feel bad for saying this because the ladies who work there seemed really nice and friendly but sorry..food just isn't tasty.

Food was good but a limited menu. The restaurant itself was a bit if a disappointment with the cafeteria style ordering and rush feeling of having to eat and run. If you are looking for a place to sit and visit with friends over drinks and a meal this is not the place to go.

This farm to table spot was awesome. I had the chicken biscuit and shared a side of grits with my friend. The freshly made apple, beer, ginger juice was great- just what I needed to help me with suffering from too much fun the night before. The only down side is that because everything is locally sourced, once they run out of something it's out- but for fresh food, I can live with that.

We went here for the Saturday brunch today. I had heard a lot of good things about Foode so I was eager to try it. Unfortunately it did not live up to me expectations. My son in law & I had the buttermilk biscuit chicken egg sandwiches. The biscuit was very good however our chicken was overcooked. The chicken was dried out and the seasonings were a bit too overpowering. My husband had the Big Kid's Grilled Cheese. He said the name was misleading. He felt it was more of a turkey sandwich with cheese. It was grilled however he didn't care for the plain white bread they used. He said that his turkey was dry too. He asked for bacon on his sandwich too, which was an additional $2.00 and he got just 1 1/2 slices of bacon. My daughter had the asparagus omelet. This was very good. She & I had the pink grapefruit mimosas. These were good as well. We all asked to substitute the Foode fries for the home fries, there was a $1.50 up charge to do so. Not worth that. The fries were overdone and barely warm when our food arrived. All in all our visit was disappointing. For what we got we felt it was overpriced. Probably won't be going back anytime soon.

We recently tried Foode for the first time. It is small inside, but the staff was very nice and the food was delicious. It's great to have a farm to table resturant in Fredericksburg.

I don't understand the hype. First, most of the food was fresh, but my wild rice was not prepared on the day that I dined. If I liked to eat with flies buzzing all around my food, I would have given this place 5 stars because they had an abundance of flies and they were certainly fresh. But what really shot this place down for me is that I am a lazy diner. I like the waitress to come take my order while I'm sitting in my chair tableside. I don't want to stand in line like I'm at a deli and order a $16 entree and an $8 salad. I expected them to ask, "Do you want fries with that?". High points were that grilled pork chop, however bland, was a nice cut and my husband seemed to enjoy his baked chicken. The wine is pretty cheap, both in cost and flavor.

This was my midpoint stop of a lenghty rainy commute back from dc to va beach and I am so glad I did it. I had the Fredericksburger and this is the best burger I had in decades. I like them medium well and it came perfect (moist and slightly pinkish) This is now a must stop every time I come back from dc.

A great little place that is tucked into an alley between 2 buildings in downtown Fredericksburg. They change the menu reguarly which keeps things interesting and I like the concept of using local ingredients to support the local farms. My fiance and I are both big fans. FYI - I hear that their brunch here is really good though I haven't tried it myself. Highly recommended if you are downtown looking for a place to eat!!! Overall, very cozy feel and food is always outstanding.

So is it pronounced "foodie," as the sign outside the restaurant suggests with its horizontal bar over the "e," or is it "food-eh," or something like "füd" or just "food" with an extra letter to make it extra special? Either way I was unimpressed. Their ordering system is sorta kooky, sorta off-beat and DIY: the menu's "here's the deal" section makes that clear. However, I sense that the owners are more invested in their uniqueness than their efficacy. Here's how it's supposed to work: you're greeted by a server, who directs you to the register in the back where you put in an order and consequently find a seat, then the food comes to you and you eat it. When my broad-chested friend Rob and I entered, we were greeted by a hostess who took our names down and told us there'd be a 10-minute wait; however, after sitting on a bench just inside the door, the hostess left and no one came to take her spot -- we watched several potential diners poke their heads into the cool outdoor seating area with puzzled expressions, not sure how to find a seat at such a place. I'm convinced that not even the servers knew, since a couple of parties strolled in and got seated ahead of us. While waiting for our table we were approached by about three nice indie girls who all asked us if we had already ordered or were looking for seats or if we had been helped at all -- it was annoying. The system is flawed and causes more confusion than it's worth, especially considering how small the space is: it reminds you why it's a relief to have someone take your order once in a while, why that's the norm in restaurants. Moreover, the outdoor seating area is gorgeous and very cutely decorated, a Virginia slow food aesthetic meets romantic-yet-divey Parisian café, which just makes it all the more appealing to be taking your time sitting at the table perusing the options, talking, not standing at a register awkwardly, etc. The food was pretty tasty, but alas, overpriced -- if I'm gonna pay 10 bucks for a philly chicken sub and 6 for a beer I expect the service to be awesome, which it wasn't. I really do love the space they have here, but an overhaul is needed in the front of the house -- "Meh. I've experienced better" is apt.

Felt this was a place I has to try, I was surprised the place wasn't crawling with hippies as I was told to expect. The hanger steak and sweet potato fries were very good. The menu was a little underwhelming, but sometimes that's a good thing, like a soul food kitchen "jus shut up and sit down suga" and eat whatever they plop in front of you. I'd go back at least once, I have to try the burger. It looked insane!

This place is a bargain! For the quality of the food, the prices here were nuts. The staff here was helpful and friendly too. While in Fredericksburg for the day, a friend and I were looking for somewhere to get dinner. The excellent yelp reviews steered us to Foode and we could not have been happier. At $5, the rosemary bread seemed a little steep when we ordered it, but we changed our tune when an entire loaf of freshly baked bread arrived at our table. The pimento cheese toasts were outstanding, as was the vegetarian entree of grits topped with string beans and grilled eggplant. If I find myself in town again, I will definitely be back to this restaurant.

Looks like I'ma be salmon swimming upstream on this one, but I was just not as impressed as I'd really hoped to be -- based on Yelp reviews -- by our experience at FOODE. And I'd so hoped and expected to have my socks blown clear off. I mean, on paper there's really nothing not to like about FOODE (pronounced "foodie"). 1) They're committed to supporting local farmers and growers, highlighting on the menu products grown and harvested near Fredericksburg. Locavorism is my favorite philosophy! 2) It's casual, communal dining in a low-key environment. Show up, give your name, and wait for the next available table. Peruse the menu, order at the counter, then have a seat and wait for your food and drink to show up. You might even end up at the Community Table (as we did) with friends and neighbors. 3) Their motto is "Gourmet for the rest of us," so theoretically the food is both accessible and, well, gourmet. In practice, FOODE didn't *quite* live up to my highfalutin expectations, tho husband and I certainly enjoyed our dinner here just fine. We started with a Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale and a Crispin Honey Crisp Artisanal Reserve cider (mine, natch, and the last one in the joint!). For starters we ordered the Cherry Apple Salad with dried cherries, walnuts, matchsticks of apple, and tofu dressing. It was fresh and flavorful, but didn't really feel outside the salad box. We also ordered Pimiento Cheese Toast, two at $1 a pop. *They* were awesome: a thin slice of crostini smothered in melted cheddar and chunks of roasted red pepper with just a hint of fire. I could have eaten a dozen and, after dinner, kinda wished that's where I'd pooled my calories. Husband and I split two entrées: a local, organic grilled Sweet Italian Sausage with cheddar grits, braised greens, cilantro oil, and burnt-honey drizzle; and a Risotto of local, organic Bacon and Greens topped with grape tomatoes and microgreens. The florid descriptions had our mouths watering. But, while both dishes were nice, both also felt a bit dinner-party-ish. Like, if your enterprising bestie served you either, you'd be majorly impressed. But coming from a professional kitchen, these entrées felt a little amateur. Again -- not at all bad, just short of what I had expected from all the glowing Yelp reviews. Perhaps this is just another example of what happens when you build a spot up too much in your mind. Alas.

went with my wife....she had the egg omelet (forget what it was called) with homefries...and i had the fredericksburger. It was just okay, really nothing special....my wife hated her dish, it was not an omelet but more scrambled eggs, but she told me it tasted awful and she did not even finish her dish. I tried her dish, and thought it was bland, not flavorful.

I thought I'd try Foode for a change of pace and so far so good. I added an inside picture. Everyone here is very nice and welcoming. Nice to see in the burg. You sit down and order your meal at the counter. The kitchen is upstairs so they have to bring the food down. I like the fact that they have a community table. Kidda like they have in germany where everyone just sits down with other people. Lots of local art for sale on the walls too. I ordered the cheesy bean burger which was very good with redskin potato salad. I don't know what's in the potato salad but its very tasty. My bean burger standard was Sammy T's down the street. This bean burger is very good. There are so many variations of bean burgers, some good, some so not so. This one is very good. Nice char flavor with chipotle spread on it. I'll definitely will come back to try the Foode for everyone else. Wopr

Let me start by saying that the food was good. Can't complain. I had the shrimp and grits -- very good and spicy, just the way shrimp and grits should be. I'm also not going to complain about the 20 minute wait for a table. The hostess told us that it would be 20 minutes, and it was 20 minutes. I am going to complain, however, about the attitude of the employees. I went to dinner with my husband and my elderly, disabled mother who walks with a cane. As I said, we stood in the lobby of the restaurant while waiting 20 minutes for a table (not a problem). As we waited, 2 available seating options became available at the same time: The end 3 seats of a community table, where the chairs were high barstools, and a regular table with dining room chairs. The hostess asked us if we minded the community table, and at first we said that it would be fine -- then, when we saw the stools (and thought of the difficulty that my mother would have climbing onto the stools), we asked if we could please have the regular table. We were told that the dining table had been "reserved" for another group. Well, foode does not take reservations (as mentioned by previous reviews). However, a 3-person group arrived shortly after we did -- and it was obvious that they were some type of "celebrity" -- the chef came out to see them, and they received complimentary alcoholic beverages while waiting (sitting down, I might add -- while we stood next to the door -- again, my mother was leaning on her cane). This able-bodied "special" group (don't know if they were investors or relatives or whatever) was seated at the 3-person table, while my mother struggled to climb onto the bar stool. Needless to say, my husband I were seething mad. We had our dinner -- again, the food was good -- but did not order additional beverages or dessert, because I didn't want to give them another penny. I will not patronize their establishment again. A place that would treat customers that way is not deserving of my hard-earned money.

So good it will make you want to smack your momma and call her Stella. Chicken and waffles is outstanding. The flavor on the chicken is spot on. Grits are great - better then the Flying Biscuit in Atlanta. Burger is awesome and the flavors are balanced. Plus, great sweet tea in a Mason jar. Simply, you need to go and enjoy some outstanding food in a unique small setting.

Really love the food and the atmosphere of this place. It is first come first serve so you have to make sure you don't go around a lunch/dinner rush. Although when I went I only had to wait about 20 minutes and the food was definitely worth it. I know a lot of people complain about this but I love the "laid back" feel to the staff. Everyone just wants to chill out, which is nice. The menu changes within a couple of weeks- last time I went I had a curried chicken salad sandwich that had lemon zest and pickled onions on it. The ingredients sounded like they wouldn't mesh well together but the whole thing was delicious. INCREDIBLE potato salad!!!! Wish they had given me more :( the sweet tea was also really awesome. I'll definitely be back here next time I'm in Fredericksburg!

This place is all about the food. And delicious it is! I live a short walk from Foode, and ate here just yesterday. I had the Big Nasty and it was sublime. Foode isn't hung up on much -- they'll bring a drink to your table, but after that, you are on your own for refills. Fine with me. The food is just incredible. Ambiance is likewise very chill, although it does get crowded and if you've never been there before it can be a little irritating with tons of people trying to get to the cash register to put in their orders -- combined with a somewhat unique ordering/seating setup. Just get over it and think about the food. You will not be disappointed.

You need directions to eat at this place! No employee explained the procedures to us for eating here. Maybe this place is trendy but I'll go to a fast food place for $40 less if Í want to serve myself. The fries are thick and undercooked. Not a good experience.

Not sure why this place has such high reviews. Positives: it has a cute outdoor seating area, we had good service, and their roasted tomato and chèvre soup was awesome. Other than that, I thought it was pretty mediocre. We got the black bean burger and the tuna bacon burger. The black bean burger was better--it had a good flavor and we didn't regret ordering it, but it certainly wasn't amazing. The tuna and bacon burger was fine, but was still bland and you couldn't taste the bacon. Not sure what all the fuss is about.

This is my third time here - I always try to stop for breakfast when driving from DC to Richmond on the weekend. This time I had a biscuit with whipped honey butter that was pretty much amazing. The biscuit was perfect and I want to mainline that honey butter. I also ordered another chicken biscuit that came with eggs (on the biscuit) and a side of potatoes. The chicken biscuit comes out super tall, so it's tough for most people to get a bite with the fried chicked, egg, and biscuit. Luckily I can fit like an entire grapefruit in my mouth so it's no problem, but maybe it's worth cutting up if you can't. Everything was really excellent - such a satisfying meal and the prices are pretty decent. I want to explore more dining options in Fredricksburg, but Foode makes it tough not to return.

What an amazing find! The outdoor seating reminded me of the charming Cafe's in Europe. The food is your quintessential farm to table (though no idea if there is actually a farm). The omelette I had was 'huge' and cooked to perfection. The accompanying traditional mimosa completed the experience.

I don't live in Fredericksburg, and it's been a few years since I've been down in the old town area, but I bought a Groupon for this place and decided to check it out with my sister. Boy, am I glad I did! The food was fantastic, and I loved the atmosphere and the way this place was just...unique. Nothing like it around. Loved the staff - the owners, Beth and Joy, were super friendly and Molly, the girl behind the counter was really sweet even though I probably annoyed her with my thousand questions. Amazing food. We started off with the FoodE Fries with peppercorn aioli - we ate 3 ramikens of the ailoli. I got the maple brined pork chop with apple butter butter (genius combination) and my sister got the pan seared chicken with risotto - the risotto was SO good - I wish I had gotten it with my meal, but mine came with potatoes. My only complaint would be that they don't let you substitute sides - I think they should - switching risotto for potatoes should be easy and allowed, I think. great sweet tea. The cookies were out of this world -they were crisp on the outside, and chewy and soft on the inside, and the little cup of milk was so cute. On my way out, I took home some of their housemade hummus from the market - by far the best hummus I've ever had. It's a little more coarse than what you're probably used to, and that makes all the difference. The flavor was great and the texture was amazing. It's not at all like the smooth, almost soupy hummus you get at other places, and that's why it's better. I'd drive down to Fredericksburg just to pick up some of that hummus. I might do that this week, actually - and maybe grab dinner while I'm at it. This doesn't have anything to do with the food, but a lot to do with why I fell in love with the place before I even set foot in the door...their blog ( thefirst365.wordpress.com ) is awesome. If you want to read the story of how this place came to be and what they've gone through to make it happen, you should really check out the blog. The owners are great writers and amazing storytellers. This place is so unique, and it does a really good job setting itself apart. The location is adorable, the atmosphere is fun and welcoming - It's gourmet food in a laid back "get your own drinks and silverware" type of place, and I've never experienced any place like it before. It's not like the "stuffy" gourmet food places I've been to before. I love eating local food produced by local farmers, so I really love what this place stands for. I will definitely go back soon. **Update** I just went to Foode for brunch for the first time, and wow! This place never fails to impress me. I wanted to order everything on the brunch menu, but I went with a bacon biscuit sandwich, and it was great. Black tea brewed with mint and served with a shot of mint-infused simple syrup...GENIUS!! I was depressed when it was gone. I hear the sausage and gravy biscuit and chicken and waffles are amazing, so that's next on my list to order. Good thing it's a trek for me because I would eat here every day if I could.

If you have ever checked out the prices on organic/antibiotic-free meat, it is very expensive and not always easy to find. So it is good to see a restaurant where you can eat real food for a very reasonable price. So you enter through a little alley and wind up ordering your food at the registter. They have free citrus water available. I have had the grass fed burger and the fried chicken and waffles here and both are fantastic! Also, you can do parties/events catered by them in the design studio next door. Went to one for a friend and they did a great job catering it.

Super friendly, fabulous food from farm to table, fast service, cozy atmosphere!! From other reviews i wasn't too sure about this restaurant but the restaurant setting had me curious. I'd love to go back on a warmer weather day to sit in their outside dining area. This spot is the spot you are hoping to find in a small college town like Fredericksburg. All food is fresh and local and seasonal. We had the arugula salad with barbecue, pickled onions, cinnamon raison croutons, cheese, and a mustard dressing. It was awesome! We also had the apple cherry salad with a feta dressing...equally delicious. For our main dishes we had the flank steak and the pork chops. I was sad at first because they were out of a few dishes that sounded good to me but they did not disappoint. The staff was so sweet and answered my thousand questions and offers alternatives for my low carb wishes. Some college ladies close to us had chocolate chip cookies and milk for their dessert and they looked amaing. In fact, everyone else's meals that I checked out looked great. I would definitely go here again. The total for our two meals, two salads, and two teas was 58 dollars. At first glance that may seem a tad high but once you see and taste the food you will see it is well worth it. The other great thing that EVERY restaurant should do...they take your order and get your drink while you wait. So...by the time your table is ready they have you r salad or entree there within a few minutes. Brilliant!

I have been lucky enough to travel the world & experience fantastic dining, but when I visit VA, FOODE is my favorite spot. The service couldn't be friendlier or more welcoming & the menu consists of local seasonal ingredients. If there's a wait , it's WORTH IT! The owners & chefs are awesome people who always make me feel at home. I am a huge FOODE fan :)

Highly recommend and love that menu varies on what is available. Fresh and unique food. Only weird thing - pay first, etc. - so what do you do about dessert? or how to put tips on credit card - which is based on service... which by the way was excellent!

Have been looking for a great brunch place in the Fredericksburg/Stafford area and finally found it! I could totally see this place in Richmond or Charlottesville but very happy its right here in our neighborhood! My husband and I came here on a Sunday morning at five minutes to ten (right before it opens) and thank goodness we did as it is very popular! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is great and the place is beautiful with the exposed brick and cool outside area. We had checked out the menu online so we were ready to order right away. We both got mimosas and the chicken and waffles. The mimosas (and waters) came out in mason jars...total plus in my book. Our food came out fast and was incredible. The chicken was simply amazing. I mentioned to the manager that it was our first time when we were paying and she stopped by our table to make sure everything was okay while we were eating. It really felt like everyone cared that we were having a good time. We will definitely be back for brunch and I hope to try Foode soon for dinner!

Finally! A good place to eat in F-burg. I enjoying a day trip and have been many times but never found that "I'd like to go back" restaurant. Read about Foode on Yelp and tried it today with my mom. We both enjoyed our food--she had the burger, which tasted like we'd grilled it ourselves on the grill. YUM! I had the yard bird--which is a fried chicken sandwich. The fries that came with both were hand-cut and had delicious seasoning. They had sweet tea (something I can rarely find in Northern Va.). Only complaint is they have very few tables (need to lose the living room style seating area and put some more tables in). As such, you may have to wait for a table. They won't cook your food until they seat you, which is good! Dont' let the "organic" label scare you. It's good food!

We waited for almost an hour after ordering/paying! I ordered veggie eggs and they were good except WAY too salty. A friend also ordered the veggie eggs and said they were the best she's ever had...so maybe the salt just got dumped on mine; they certainly would've been better without the salt, for sure. My husband said the veggie burger was awesome and I also had buttermilk biscuits with brown sugar pecan butter and honey butter and those were to.die.for! Overall though, waiting for almost an hour with young kids in a hot room for fairly small portions- no matter how good- only deserves a 3 in my book. I think the prices were also a bit high for what you got.

I'm so in Love with the Black-bean Burger! The atmosphere is a bit dinnerish in side but the outside dinning is absolutely dreamy, and the service was really great too!

Saturday, 12:30PM. Customer rep: Meredith. My mission in Fredericksburg: catch up with friends and eat at Foode. Quickie: +Great service +Clean venue +Variety of menu items Did you know...? They don't "charge" tip to your bill. Read up on their philosophy behind that policy. Suggestions: *Hipp-ify the tomato sauce and hot sauce please! And then...? The owners use this restaurant as a conduit for their values and beliefs on lifestyle and food, and it's a good thing. Reminds me of SF/Berkeley eateries. Place is offffff the hoooooook. Keep it up, Fooooodesssss! ********** Grubbed on: 1. Chicken and waffles ++Tender meat, fried appropriately with no excess grease ++Now I know what a real f'ing waffle tastes like (sturdy center, crisp edges)

Had their buttermilk fried chicken & kale salad. Both were delicious but that's the best fried chicken I've ever had!! A bit pricey when you first look at the price but it already includes the 'tip '. Not your fine dining but definitely a clean comfortable place to eat - every week! Believe the glowing comments. Staff was very friendly .

Foode, you are getting a 4 star rating at this time but you better be careful. This is a good faith rating knowing that you can do better. The idea is awesome and the execution of most of the dishes was spot on. I will give it another try soon and reassess. The veggie egg scramble simply had too much pepper. Typically I can overlook this but it was just a bit too much. Things I like: Very fresh. They carry a limited amount of their ingredients and when it's done, it's done. This concept is rare in most restaurants but it does ensure freshness and decreases waste from spoilage. I like how their ingredients are fresh and local. More restaurants need to understand the importance of supporting the local agricultural economy. Just think: If you went to a restaurant and they had two different fried chicken meals on the menu. On is described as bulk pre-frozen chicken for $8 and the other is farm fresh chicken from Sperryville Va for $10, which would you pick? If you are willing to save the $2, then this might not be the restaurant for you. Good work Foode, specially for Fredericksburg.

I am glad I found this restaurant on Yelp. Had to give it a try since the reviews were so fantastic. It was a very special and unique experience. Even my kiddos, who are finicky eaters ate all of their food. The Mushroom omelette was their favorite. I had to have the Chicken and Waffles. Lucky me, I order the last available that Sunday. The batter on the chicken was sublime and went perfectly with the waffles. The staff was awesome and we were seated rather quickly considering the inside is small. I would definitely go out of my way if I was anyplace nearby this establishment and by-pass the major food chains for this experience.

Foode is one of my favorite Fredericksburg restaurants. With it's changing menu, you'll get a fresh and innovative meal. If you haven't been before, they have a different style of service: proceed straight to the cashier line and get a menu, order and pay for your food, and then they'll seat you. Oh, and the most important tip for anyone going to Foode is to avoid rush hour! That means go early or late- otherwise you are in for a wait! The restaurant is small and can be overwhelmingly crowded during peak hours.

Chicken and waffles at this place are awesome! I highly recommend. Only downfall is some drinks like OJ come in really small glasses so be prepared for that. But overall this place is awesome!

I've since made numerous additional trips to Foode, and it is by far my (and my husband's) favorite place to eat in downtown Fredericksburg. Their char-grilled chicken salad sandwich is one of the tastiest sandwiches I've ever eaten!

I have to say. For the first time ever Foode forgot my order! I went there later on a Friday night and waited 45 minutes for my dessert before finally getting the attention of somebody who worked there and asked them to get it. They acted like they forgot I even ordered it. I've never had that happen at Foode and I was very disappointed it did. That place usually is perfect in every way. I'm hoping that was a one time thing. I wish that they had acknowledged they forgot my order and done something about it. At least an apology. Aside from that one bad experience I can definitely say good things. Yum!! The best food in downtown Fredericksburg. It is pricey so prepare for that. The food quality is well with the price. Also if you don't like being close to strangers you won't enjoy this place. However, it's definitely great fresh food and friendly staff. The brunch is amazing.

Can't recommend a dish because they constantly change. Fantastic, eclectic food. No mixed drinks, beer by the bottle. Foode is different. You walk in, walk up and place your order. Pick out your own table and they bring it when it's been prepared with love:) everyone here is really into what they prepare. It's a great experience.

Stopped in Fredericksburg for lunch on our way home and gave Foode a try. Very satisfied with the food options on their Sunday brunch menu and blown away by the service. Our son has a dairy allergy and the staff went out of their way to make him a special dish he could have. Meg was just wonderful! Would highly recommend.

A really special place! Ingredients are locally sourced, and these days it's pretty neat to be able to say you know where your food comes from. Because of the local fare, the menu items change frequently, so check the website for the current menu before you go - then you don't have to stand in line like a sap trying to make up your mind. The staff is super friendly, the water refills self-serve. There is great care in food preparation and presentation and when you get your food, you will feel LUCKY. That's a precious feeling, to be excited to eat what they've put on the table in front of you. There are only a handful of private tables, maybe 10 - then there's the community table with about 12 seats, where you might end up forced to make a new friend! I love the idea, you're certain to have things in common with the folks that frequent this restaurant - they're like you!

The food here is great, locally-sourced yadda yadda. However, the staff here can be rude. If you don't know exactly what you're doing they act superior and 'crunchier' than thou. Sounds dramatic, but I've had a negative experience more than twice now. Put a smile on guys I'm certainly paying enough.

Beth & Joy are the owners. They're so sweet and really care about making sure your food is 100%. Their cheeseburger with bacon aioli is hands down THE best cheeseburger I've ever had. They also have this really amazing pizza. It's a crispy cheese pizza with a really yummy salad on top. Their house salad is just over the top (in a good way). It has a delicious homemade dressing w/ candied bacon! Really, can it get any better? I think not.

I have been so excited to finally try Foode. I ventured to their website and was drooling over their menu all day at work. My friend and I get there and the location is gorgeous. It's like little piece of SoHo in Fredericksburg. After admiring the outside, we go inside and the place is packed. To my surprise we have to order and pay for our food before we are seated, including the dessert. How the heck am I suppose to make a decision that fast? It was too much pressure. After we ordered, we were almost seated at the infamous community table but had to move because lonely table for one came in. Ok that was rude, but true. Now to the food. My friend and I shared the chicken and sausage pasta dish. It was okay. It tasted like something I could have made at home. It wasn't bad I just wasn't too impressed. I was very impressed by the desserts. I had an baked apple dish with vanilla ice cream. It was AMAZING. The only issue was my ice cream was almost all the way melted because the kitchen is upstairs and the server has to go outside then come inside to serve it. My friend got the samoa inspired dessert. She said it was life changing. Overall Foode did not live up to the hype for me with this week. I think I'll try them again for brunch. Hopefully I'll have a better experience. So the here's the Executive Summary Pluses: Great Atmosphere Awesome Desserts Deltas: Bland Pasta Getting your own drinks If you don't get there in time your dish could be sold out Sweet Tea Rating: Good

Foode is not about Olde English spelling, it's about foodies. And it's a keeper. They source locally, some of it organic, and they're not a chain. Service is sort of halfway. They seat you and give you a menu, and when you' re ready to order you get up and go to the "hostess station" to place the order. Atmosphere isn't what you're paying for there; the food is what's important. If you're looking for an intimate or refined evening out, Foode isn't the place to find it. But if you're after interesting food prepared well, that''s a different story. They have some interesting yet inexpensive wines and beers, and the organic Malbec we chose was nice -- not as chocolaty as might come from a really top-notch winery but still solid and sweetly fruity (rather more blueberry than raspberry, but that's not a complaint). The food wasn't at our table johnny-on-the-spot, but it arrived in good time given that it was all prepared to order, not poured out of bags and flung into a microwave. My wife's buttermilk-fried chicken with greens wilted in bacon fat over cheesy grits was excellent, not overly cheesed as you'd expect if it came off the Sysco truck. My grilled chorizo with red "C" potatoes and a homemade light tomato-based sauce over black beans and garnished with an over-easy egg was downright killer. Well conceived and well executed, priced more than fairly. It would seem that they're serious about quality: the chef/part-owner herself visited our table to check on things. The only thing I can think of to complain about is that the egg on my chorizo dish wasn't over quite easy enough: I was looking for that velvety yellow ooze, and it wasn't there. Hence, four stars instead of five. Still and all, I'd go back in a heartbeat.

My wife and I drove down from Northern Virgina today to meet my Sister-in-Law half way in Fredericksburg at Foode. I was a disappointed to learn that I was "encumbered by literacy" when reading the menu on their website yesterday (Wednesday) to find out that the menu that listed a "Turkey Melt Sandwich" was listed on their menu for the week of 1 Oct is only available on Tuesdays. So I settled for the Turkey burger which was good. Although, I was a bit disappointed in the accompanying red potato salad, which I did not finish (which is unusual for me as I generally like potato salad) especially when one considers how small the portion was. Perhaps they should should consider smaller plates at $10 for this dish. The turkey burger was very good, made by the aioli which gave it a bit of tang, which made it interesting and worth eating. On the plus side. I have to say that the staff is excellent and very polite and aim to please even though they do not offer traditional wait service as one goes inside to order one's food and pay of it and then the "food runners" (servers) bring it to your table. Even though the drinks are self service and one goes inside to order one's food we felt compelled to leave a 15 % tip based on the attentive staff, in spite of the fact that this is NOT a full service restaurant. I found this place on Yelp as the #3 restaurant in Fredericksbug. Would I try it again? Only after trying # 2 and #1. It was good but, not great IMHO.

I have never had a meal there I didn't like! My favorite restaurant in Fredericksburg. Everything is farm-to-table/grass fed hormone free; some food is organic! Excellent brunch! The chicken and waffles are good. At dinner, their burgers are amazing. The menu changes weekly. Their milk and cookies are delicious too for dessert :) Awesome rustic atmosphere, friendly staff!

Talk about an unexpected surprise!! We heard about Foode through word of mouth. The first attraction was the alley way to enter Foode that portrayed its of a small town with a few tables leading to the front door. Then came the food. Which just happened to be served personally by the one of the owners who happens to also be the chef. I ordered the homemade Italian sausage over pasta. Incredible!! Yes, locally-owned homemade sausage and it was worth every bite. As a matter of fact, the menu serves all local farm grown foods. Yes, I will go through Fredericksburg again and yes I will certainly pay Foode another visit.

I have never had a bad experience with Foode. It is a place that I love to eat at regularly. My favorite thing I have tried is the black bean burger. It is awesome! Sweet tea out of mason jars is good too. Love that you order up front and pay before you eat.

I'm a picky eater. I hate to try new things, and even ordering at new restaurants is a little intimidating for me. I'm also not a fancy person, so snooty doesn't sit well with me. I don't like big menus with too many choices in seven different languages. Here's what I *do* like.....FOODE. This place is relatively new to my little town, but we were invited to a small party at FOODE once and I got to try a couple of appetizers; so I was ready to go back and try out their dinner menu. When my friend's photography showing opened at FOODE recently, I decided to take the family and give it a whirl. I thoroughly enjoy the quasi-cafeteria style of ordering first and then being seated. The menu is a series of dishes already put together for you. If you want an appetizer, you simply include it with your order and they bring it once you're seated. As I understand it, the menu changes all the time, so they actually print simple menus every day. This makes it more exciting to me, because I can assume that the next time we go -- and there *will* be a next time -- there will be fresh items to choose from. I chose a barbecue pork chop with a pile of greens that I can't even remember the name of (dandelion, maybe?) over bread pudding. I'm not sure what that evokes in you, but I thought the medley a bit strange. We also ordered a dish of sea salted truffle fries for the table to share. When this food came out, I was shocked at the quality. FOODE uses locally-grown meats and produce. The kitchen is actually in an upstairs room. The wait staff brings your food in through the front door because they have to walk through the courtyard to get it to you. This pork chop was perfectly seared and beautifully cooked throughout -- so moist with just the right amount of sauce and seasoning. It was balanced on the greens that had obviously been steeped in something delicious. I expected them to be bitter, but whatever they had been tossed with just added a perfect balance of taste and sweetness. Beneath the greens was a delicious bread pudding. I will confess that I'm not a huge bread pudding fan, and since I'd already eaten too many fries from the enormous serving they piled onto our table, I didn't have much room left. Apart from the bread pudding crumbs, though, there wasn't a shred of food left on my plate. I left already thinking about how to plan the next visit. If you've been to downtown Fredericksburg, you might have an impression of how things are there...some places have come and gone, and it seems like every week we get disappointing news about another restaurant that is closing. I don't think FOODE is a flash-in-the-pan kind of place. The obvious care given to the food and the overall dining experience is obvious. It's so new, and you can see they're still working out some kinks, but I have really high hopes for FOODE.

Hands down best brunch in the Fred!!! You MUST try the fried chicken and waffles and the fried chicken biscuit. OH MY - so yummy. RUN HERE NOW, do not wait - go!!! I also love that they support local farmers and use the 'farm to table" concept. There can be a long wait and there are not that many tables - but it is worth it!

I used to love this place. It was a unique, flavorful, and delicious. But it's not as good as it used to be. The flavor is bland, the portions are small, and all the proteins seems to be dry and overcooked. The service is great though. That's the only positive review I can share.

I read the reviews and heard from friends about this place, so my date and I decided to give it a try. We eat clean and organic so it all sounded exciting! Walking into the courtyard, you're greeted with specials for the evening and very cool wooden tables line the right side for a unique dining area, but it was a bit too chilly tonight, so we ventured in. Before entering the dining area door, there is a huge flight of stairs which we later found out is where the kitchen is. Hmmmm, not sure this was a good idea for waiters. (As we left, a waiter coming down the stairs, dropped a plate of food, poor dude, terrible idea for a kitchen location) Inside was very small but warm and very hipster which we like. The waiting area had two over sized chairs that took up space that would be better suited to set up more tables to accommodate the crowds that seemed to continue to file in. THIS PLACE STAYS BUSY which impressed me, so I was excited to order, plus I was starving! The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Given menus to review and order from, we were a bit taken back by the prices. Being that we really didn't want to spend a lot of money, we talked and decided to stay and give it try. After all, it was the kind of food we like and the place was cool! My date ordered the Breakfast Burger with a sweet tea (which he LOVED) and I ordered the Harvest Plate and a glass of red wine. The neighboring table had 3 very small children that seemed very tired of waiting for their food. My thought is, this is not a family restaurant, too small and since the food is cooked to order, the wee ones have to wait too long. Dumb parents, I felt bad for the kids.(We got our food, and were done before they got theirs!) Food came, and looked good. His burger ($13) was of considerable size and the fries were herbed. I tried a fry, and they were yummy! I don't eat much red meat, but I wanted a taste and it was good too. Nothing too special and could have been seasoned more. He agreed but continued to devour it. My dish ($15) was neatly arranged, mashed potatoes then a line of mushrooms next to a bright green line of greens. It looked interesting and I was ready to devour! I wish I could say that my senses had a party of delicious spices and aromatic aromas but as I kept tasting and eating, wishing that the next bite would give me what I was looking for, sadly it didn't. The greens were tasteless, the mushrooms were plump but lacked flavor, and the mash potatoes were over salted. Well, we were very disappointed at spending $44 for food that could have been seasoned better for being so pricey. I'm sad. I wanted to really like this place. :(

Great place, love the ambiance and the decor. The umbrella entrance is a must photo stop. The menu was very limited though, and the night I went they were sold out of one dish already so that made my choices down to 4 other items. You pay and order first, then you are seated. Kind of like Chipotle. Not really my preference but that's just me. I prefer sitting down, ordering a beer, reading the menu, then placing an order. The food was awesome. Best polenta I have ever had. The eggplant on toast appetizer was great as well.

Foode's motto is to offer affordable, organic dishes in an unpretentious, cozy atmosphere. The consensus brunch favorite appears to be the chicken and waffles which sells out quickly, but the pork chop with cheese grits was equally as good. The large, sugar rimmed mimosa with prosecco makes a good pairing. Make room for the crispy, light biscuit with butter blended with honey or fruit. Their wine list has bottles at prices other restaurants would offer for one or two glasses. Some menu items changes with the seasonality of the local produce. The Sunday brunch offers a unique option called 'the big nasty'. It is a chef's choice item which is the heartiest brunch item one can imagine. I have seen one version as a burger with thick bacon, cheese, and a sunny side egg. Another one was a burrito with steak, pork, chicken, beans, chile verde and too many other items to mention. Although you order at the register and tips are not requested, it still feels like a full service restaurant. Foode is highly recommended and can't wait to go again.

Can't complain about anything here. For a place that you have to order at the front, the service is superb. The food is excellent and shows some imagination. The drink offerings are also unique. I wish we had a place like this closer to home.

We was there last night for dinner. It is a great little place off a main road. We had the PB&J and the Grilled Cheese. Both were quality and totally fine for adults. They were both served with fresh grapes and fries. I finished it off with the chocolate chip cookies and milk. A fun dining experience.

The $5 small plate tapas style southern food is a great idea. I wish we would have tried it. My wife and I did the full portion plates instead, and they were okay. She liked her harvest plate, and my 1/2 chicken was okay (although it definitely wasn't a half chicken, the full breast wasn't included). We would try it again, but only for the small plates.

We stopped here for lunch. This is a small restaurant with few tables. We ended up on a wait list and eventually chose an outdoor table, even though the weather was still cool. The restaurant operates a bit different. After entering the restaurant, we waited in line for the register and were provided with menus. The line moves somewhat slow, since everyone must choose meals, desserts, and drinks at the register. You can pick up bottled drinks from refrigerators as you wait in line. If you want tea, you are allowed to choose a Tazo tea bag at the register and told that hot water will be delivered to your table. Beer bottles/cans are provided when placing your order at the register. Note that you pay for your food up front (credit cards accepted), but the charge/receipt does not include tip (as appropriate since no service has yet been provided). Luckily I had cash and was able to leave a tip on the table. Overall, the food and service were top notch. We started with the warm bread with mixed marinated olives. Recommended if you like olives. My salad was composed of only lettuce leaves, but because there were a variety of leaves and the dressing was light, the various flavors kept the salad interesting. I had the grilled vege sandwich. The vegetables were fire roasted and the olive-goat cheese tapanade complimented the vegetables well. The side potato salad was mild but flavorful. My one disappointment was that I didn't realize that the short beer list actually was longer and continued on the next column, so I ended up with a "lighter" beer. After sitting at the table, I realized that there were a half-dozen more beers, including Terrapin Rye Pale Ale from GA, Mission Shipwreck IPA from CA, and a Terrapin Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout.

Pros: Cute place & delicious, fresh, creatively served food. Cons: The restaurant set-up & ordering process. I went for brunch on a Sunday with my Hubby & Aunt. The place was really crowded (but that's a good sign). It's a little confusing upon entering b/c there are people waiting everywhere & you have to form a line to order your food at a cashier stand then have to wait in a small area with limited seating for a table to open up. That portion was annoying but the food made up for it. We tried the Bacon Suckers (sugar spiced bacon on a stick- yum!), Cheddar Grits, Bacon Biscuit, Sausage & Gravy & Fried Chicken Biscuit. All of them were extremely good and the biscuits were huge. My favs were the Bacon Suckers and Grits. Overall, I'd give this place 3.5 stars. I'd like to come back and try their dinner menu.

This review is only for brunch, which is incredible here! We did have dinner once and we were not impressed, but this is our go to place when we have people out of town for brunch. The biscuits and brown sugar pecan butter are to die for, and 'The Big Nasty' changes each week but is always excellent. The servers are always in a good mood and the decor is lovely outside and they love my dog which makes me love them even more! I love supporting a local restaurant with sustainable ethics and who apparently treats their employees well.

Went there for dinner with friends. Great atmosphere for get together. We sat at their community table, enough to fit 10 comfortably. If you're looking for a place to get wasted at this is not a place. For a simple date or hang out, it's great. Food is affordable, delicious & unique. Not too loud. You order and pay at same time at the cash register and they bring you the food. Drink out of mason jars (it IS downtown Fredericksburg). There's outside tables available for when its nice outside too. Overall, it's quite relaxing. Give it a shot, I'm definitely going back.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Foode. Best place to eat in downtown Fredericksburg hands down. The food is ALWAYS amazing the staff is always overly friendly and very helpful and the owners are awesome. I've eaten here at least a dozen times and every time I am blown away by how amazing the food is. I've never had the same thing twice and LOVE that the menu changes weekly.

Stopped here based on Yelp rating alone. Over 150 reviews with an average of 4.5 stars we thought this has got to be good. Well Yelp nailed it again! This place is outstanding. Service was great and welcoming. The food was incredible. This place clearing separates itself from local competition. I expect something like Foode in DC or New York because it's such quality. Luckily for us it's right here in Fredericksburg. If you're near here STOP IN!!!!! You won't be disappointed.

Decided to take a wkend getaway to fredericksburg and came here for brunch and it was amazingly delicious! The staff are super nice and super laid back. The place is so cute with a few outdoor seating, and indoor it gets packed in there but the wait is not bad and you can pre-order and pre-pay so that once you're seated your food comes right out. I ordered the curry chicken sandwich and it was great. my friend ordered the polenta with fried chix! both were awesome! i recommend the polenta with friend chix :) the other things on the menu looked great that others ordered around me and i will definitely come back to this place in the future. local. organic. inexpensive. delish. friendly. laidback. just all about food.

Foode was our halfway stop on our trip to DC and I was very impressed by this little place. Completely unpretentious and welcoming, we were seated quickly for Sunday brunch and our food came out soon after. The coffee was good, the chicken sandwich was outstanding and the big nasty with chorizo was delicious. Next time I'm in Fredericksburg I'm definitely coming back.

I was in the Fredericksburg area this past weekend and dropped in for a bite with my wife and in laws. Good place. When you walk in, its a little chaotic and seems a bit all over the place, but its just for the first few minutes. Once your seated, it becomes a little more clear on how the experience will unfold. The good- The food was pretty darn delicious. Since I was there during restaurant week, they had combo meals- I opted for the simple fresh green salad and the oven baked chicken. The salad was nice with good local produce. The baked chicken was deliciously cooked and nicely seasoned. I really enjoyed the addition of the russet red potatoes underneath the chicken. Ok, the not so good. It was hot. No air conditioning. I would have gone elsewhere if it was just my wife and I. Hot and sticky and whew, just jammed with people. Not the best dining experience. Also, I have to honest, the whole pay at the register/no tipping/menu explanation was a little too much. When I'm out to eat, I just want a straight forward server. But hey, the food was good and the wait staff seemed pleasant, so I cant complain too much. All in all, a nice night out in VA. 3.5 stars.

I don't go often because they're pretty pricey, but Foode has really great food. It's a small restaurant with a bit of a hipster vibe, and the staff makes sure to know you by name. This is a great place for a special occasion, and though their food often sounds a bit confusing, you can trust that it'll be delicious.

Let me start by saying that I have never had a bad meal at Foode. In fact, I have enjoyed several of the best meals I have ever eaten. Chicken and waffles...awesome. Hanger steak...unbelievable. Harvest plate...call your mother good. Best. Food. Ever. But do you know what I like best about this restaurant? The people. Being a celebrity investor can sometimes be challenging as people assume I deserve and want special treatment. However this is not the case at Foode. They invented the community table where the celebrity investor can break bread with regular folks. Everyone is treated equally as one big family. Foode: gourmet for the rest of us.

If it were possible to give 10 stars I would. I absolutely love Foode! It is my favorite restaurant in Fredericksburg. The food is delicious, but it's not just about the food. It's about the atmosphere. I love the casual, friendly, unpretentious atmosphere. I love that they display the artwork of local artists. I love that they get most of their food from local farmers and it's great quality. I love that Beth knows I always want sour cream with my french fries and that she always asks how my son is doing. I love that when I go in that place I feel like family. I love how real and transparent the owners are. The blog on their webpage is awesome. After reading it most days I wonder who in their right mind would want to own and run their own restaurant. It sounds extremely difficult and exhausting, but it definitely gives me an appreciation for what they do. They are living their dream. How awesome is that?! I love that Foode is so much more than food. It's for that reason I will continue to go there as often as my checkbook allows and that I will rave about it to everyone I know. Beth & Joy, if by chance you end up reading this review - Thank you for bringing such an awesome place to Fredericksburg! I know you're not a huge fan of yelp reviews, but I hope this one makes your day! Love what you're doing ladies! Keep up the amazing work!

Don't be tardy! We arrived at 2:20pm on a Saturday and were turned away as the kitchen closes at 2:20pm. Quite poor form! Update: We tried attending again and were rewarded with a great meal with lots of local fresh produce; a genuinely enjoyable experience.

I did not realize Fredericksburg had food like this. On a recent stopover on the my way down South I stopped by Foode towards the end of their Saturday lunch service, snagged a cute table for two, was waited on by the sweetest lady who referred to me as "honey," and ate the most delicious black bean burger. The patty is huge, yet it's all quality ingredients - not held together by loads of starch. The toasted bun, condiments, and fries were wonderful. My dining buddy, who's very picky with burgers, had the beef burger and he claimed it was one of the best burgers he's ever had. There needs to be more places like this - cozy, classy locations WITH COUNTER SERVICE for ordering, yet a lovely wait staff for drinks and bringing out the dishes, etc. Next time I'm making the trip down specifically for Foode. Also, great prices.

We loved this from start to finish. They do things a little differently but wonderfully. I had a corn risotto and he the pork chop. Food was fabulous. It was quite busy so we ended up at the community table. We sat across from a lovely lady from out of town. Great atmosphere. The thing that struck me as HUGE was that everyone that worked there was FRIENDLY and not tipped. Highly recommend!

Hands down the best and most original restaurant in downtown Fredericksburg! I eat at Foode all of the time and have never had a meal less than delicious! They support local farmers which really adds to the feeling of warmth and comfort to the place. The menu changes a lot depending on the season, but that just makes the new dishes so exciting to try! If you haven't eaten here yet you are seriously missing out! Great place for a date or to go with friends.

The reviews were great so we had to give this little place a try. A very enterprising and personal kind of place, we were quite optimistic, but seating was our first problem since the inside seating was jam-packed. It was a cool November mid-day, and although the sun was out it was just plain uncomfortable sitting outside in the shady passageway where a breeze blew in on us from the street...but on a sunny summer day I can see how this seating area would be a plus. The food was another issue. The chicken cheesesteak sounded great and we ordered two of them, but they turned out to simply lack flavor. The thick white-bread roll on which they were served overwhelmed anything that might have been lurking inside. The chicken was bland and scarce, the veggies overcooked. Cups of hot tea were consistently served lukewarm. The good things? My son's hamburger looked fabulous and we all agreed that the french fries were excellent. I'd try this place again just for the charm, but we hope that something besides the hamburger will make a second visit worthwhile.

I LOVE foode! I am a vegetarian and their harvest dish is always so tasty :) It is such a wonderful environment, my husband and I always enjoy our dinner there. He is not a vegetarian and always loves the food he gets. He also always gets a root beer there and it is very very tasty! The only down-side is their gift certificate policy. You have to use the entire card at once, you cannot use part of a gift certificate.

This place was incredible! I got the chicken and waffles, and it was delicious. My brother got the burger and was very satisfied. The place is a bit small but I expected that after the other reviews. I was honestly so happy with the place and i'll be coming back real soon!

As I systematically sample the culinary experience in old town Fredricksburg I have found myself repeatedly coming back here. The service is always great. It is a small place so conveying the food in a timely manner is made simpler. They maintain a no tipping policy which ensures a bit more bang for the buck (I hope they compensate their eager to please staff accordingly). I have yet to wait for any order placed for more than a few short minutes. The waitresses are always beaming with a smile and rightfully prideful about the menu. The atmosphere is very cool. Perched between two brick buildings is a narrow passageway that is lined with rustic tables to one side. Draped above the old masonry is some elegant overhead textile shading which lends to a serene old european feel. The "dining court" ends at a door that leads to a romantically lit earth toned, tiled room with simple furnishings. They boast free range, organic, local....which may or may not contribute to the bliss of my palette but if that's your thing give them points. The shrimp and grits were richly flavored and had me desiring more. The appetizers are majestic despite apparent simplicity. I ordered a loaf of rosemary bread once (on the basis that I was low on cash at the time) and POW!...It effected my senses in a way that food generally does not. I had some roasted hummus that took an otherwise mundane dip and made it something beyond. They are masters at melding things that compliment poetically and boldly. They push limits with earthy, raw, spicy, fragrant and textural contrast. If you see something seemingly ordinary on the menu brace yourself for a bitch slap of euphoria. I dined with a buddy some time ago and he had the fried chicken. After his first bite his brows knitted and his eyes affixed to his task of devouring his meal. He ate it intensely, angrily almost. He ceased all conversation and was totally engrossed in his meal. I smiled and asked "Are you enjoying that?" He was lapping a clean bone like a ravenous dog and he said "Dude...that was stupid good." Bon Appetite my gluttonous friends.

This restaurant skirts the issue of being called "trendy" by serving good portions of organic cuisine at affordable prices. The interior is simple, yet open and not a feeling of being too cramped. I had a grass-fed beef burger with delicious FoodE fries that had crunch but weren't greasy. The cremini mushrooms added some bulk to the burger, which was cooked perfectly. The chef salad left a lot to be desired, as the dressing was flavorless and I had not much besides lettuce on the plate... all the topping were on the bottom and there wasn't much. That being said, the candied bacon was superb. The children's menu was well executed with an amazing apple sauce that I actually finished. The staff is incredibly friendly and works very hard, although it seemed a bit chaotic. I would definitely go back

The food itself tasted great. If I was judging by only the taste of the food and the ambiance of the restaurant I would give them 5 stars, but unfortunately I had a bad experience. Maybe about a half hour after finishing my meal I had a bout of uncontrolled vomiting, which causes me to think that I got food poisoning from the meal I ate there. I wasn't sick before the meal, and I felt fine a couple hours after vomiting so I just don't know what else it could have been. I had a wonderful time at the restaurant and eating the food, but I could have done without the rest.

The Yelp reviews attracted us to Foode, and we were impressed! In an attempt at not repeating other reviews, we'll be back because: 1. Weekly menu - High quality, local produce means things change throughout the year. And if Foode can't find quality products, they won't serve it. Additionally, focus is critical to a fine dining experience. Foode narrows their menu to an interesting variety that changes on occasion. I like that, and it makes me want to come back to 'experience' the place again and again. 2. Clean environment - More than just keeping the tables wiped, Foode ensures that everything is clean, the floor, the register area, the Market, the Alley, the food itself. By focusing on local organic produce, Foode ensures that their clients receive the best quality food possible with the least possible environmental impact. I like that, and it makes me want to come back. 3. Staff - Hands down the friendliest and most knowledgeable staff I've dealt with in Fredericksburg. Be it the origin of the food or the subtleties of the wine, Foode's staff knows it and genuinely enjoys sharing in the dining experience. I like that. My wife and I had the burger and fries. While not something we'd normally order for dinner, we read that it was worth trying and were glad we did! They were delicious, and when paired with a glass of Cline Ancient Vine mourvèdre, it was outstanding. Cooked to order and served on a locally baked bun, and the fries were just right the crispness. All in all a great first experience at a place we look forward to trying again soon.

stop at F-burg on our way to FL. I love this town and this restaurant was equally loved. I order the chicken Philly and hot cocoa with Cinnamon whipped cream..yummers on the cocoa never had such an amazing cup of hot cocoa. The sandwich was good, but what really got me were the fries's ..the best fries hands down..so good. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, we had a dog and sat outside where they had heaters on this cold December day. If I find myself in F-burg again, I will be sure to visit foodE again, awesome place. And a final note, you place your order at the register and the food is brought to your table. Not a deal breaker for me.

Pretty good. They do a decent job of replicating trendier urban establishments in places like DC, which makes this place truly stand out in the restaurant-desert that is Fredericksburg.

Heard great things about this place. Walked in and the place was a mess. People everywhere. Could barely get in. If it wasnt for another patron to explain to us how to order we would still be standing there. After 10 minutes of this insanity we left. Wont be back.

Hands down the best restaurant in Fredericksburg. The owners treat you like family from the moment they meet you. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating area and the atmosphere is incredible. If you are having a bad day, come by and sit for a bit. Your day will get better instantly. Order anything that includes chicken and you won't be disappointed! Love, love, love, Foode.

We had a fairly "large" party for this size restaurant (6 of us on a Saturday night) but every single one of us loved the food we ordered! The service was great. I'm just bummed about the set up, I don't mind ordering first but finding a table and being so crowded take away from what I think could be a really fun place to sit, relax, chat with your fellow diners ...but I felt bad sticking around for too long because it was take away from this very new business profit. I really hope they are able to expand to a larger place someday! :)

Went here for Sunday brunch and had a great experience. The service is fantastic - very attentive and very friendly. The ambience is also very pleasing. I had a veggie omelet with potatoes, along with some of the best, creamiest grits with honey I've ever had. Delicious. Really glad more places like this are popping up downtown!

This was my first time to Foode in Fredericksburg, VA. We found the restaurant off Yelp and the reviews got us in the door. The atmosphere from the moment we opened the door was awesome. We ordered 2 appetizers, 2 dinners and a bottle of wine. We ended up at the community table which gave the restaurant a very warm and friendly feeling. The appetizers were amazing. (Mozzarella Balls and Pigs and Figs). We both ordered Strip Steaks and they were cooked perfectly and so tender. The owner Beth talked with us for a while along with a chat with Sous Chef Joe about the fresh ingredients they use in their dishes. I would highly recommend Foode....Gourmet for the Rest of Us. I definatly want to be a part of that crowd!

I really enjoy the food here. The bean burger is really good, spiced right with yummy flavor and a bit of a crispy bite on the ends and softness in the middle. The regular burgers are always yummy. The pizza is delicious and the dough almost has this pastry feel to it...I hope they keep it healthy because that's important. I'm always treated nicely when I go there and I like it when they call me by my first name---a personal touch that shows they like to know their customers. I cannot think of anything to complain about with FOODE. I highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner. Everything is good. The salads could be a little bigger but I probably eat an abnormal amount of salad. Anyone who complains about this place is insane.

Foode is an innovative and hip restaurant. It is very informal. Most of the food served here is organic and obtained from local farms. The food is delicious! Cocktails and wine are available. No need to tip here. You place your order at the register and pay up front before being seated! The only negative was that it can get very busy and a bit loud.

This place was simply amazing! Nestled along Caroline St in historic downtown Fredericksburg, it's location and atmosphere is very different from any place I've been to. They have seating outside between two brick buildings. You can sit outside and enjoy your meal under the shade and mingle with friends. Now enough of that! Let's get down to the FOOD! :-) I had the turkey burger with potato salad and sweet tea and the cheesecake custard for dessert. Hands down the best burger I've ever had...yep, true statement. I like the way you place your order. It makes you feel welcome and at home. You read the menu and decide what you want. Then, you just place your order and find a seat! Their whole idea is to not be the typical "restaurant". They cut back on service so that you don't have to tip! Great idea. The staff is friendly, welcoming, down to earth, and have great personalities. Will definitely be back!

Wonderful restaurant with locally sourced food. I really enjoyed their burger and the fries were awesome. The staff was extremely helpful and were even able to give me directions to a store I wanted to find when I walked by the restaurant earlier in the day. I didn't indulge in dessert but all the options sounded amazing and I will definitely be returning.

Loved it! Went there today to try them out based upon finding them on Yelp. Rustic, urbin, and unique. We sat outside and despite the warm temps today it was still pleasant. The food was awesome! I wanted the chicken and waffles but they were out...very popular so I went with the recommended chicken steak sandwhich and my wife and I split a fresh salad...it was simple, fresh and just hit the spot. Thanks, we'll be there again soon.

Eat here! This restaurant is a little gem in Fredericksburg. 1. The "ally" you walk through to get to the restaurant is quaint and cozy, and is lined with tables backed up to bench seating built into window sills. 2. The inside is larger than expected. There is a variety of seating options including comfy chairs, a long communal table with stools, and your traditional tables. They decor is simple, clean, and comfortable. 3. You order at the counter and the employees bring your food to your table. Everyone was exceedingly nice and seems genuinely happy to be there. The service is so great that you will want to tip but there is neither tip jar nor a tip line on the credit card slip. Although I have no problem tipping, and tipping well, I thought it was nice not having to worry about tipping. This place is all about the food. 3. To start, I tried the arugula pesto crostini and pimiento cheese toast ($1 a piece). Both were so good. With such simple dishes, attention to detail and quality of ingredients are key. Both of these requirements were present in these seemingly basic apps. 4. Next, I had the apple, dried cherry, pecan salad with homemade feta dressing (small $7). This was such a delicate salad. The apples were cut into little juliennes with such care. There is certainly someone in the kitchen with good knife skills and who knows the art of finesse. 5. A final note. Although I didn't order alcohol, the beer selection was great. They have a nice selection of interesting micro-brews. Also, no bottle of red wine was more than $22. In conclusion, I want to go back tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, until I've tried everything there is on the menu. I hope this place doesn't become content like so many new restaurants that start off strong, but only gets better with time.

Be very careful. A very uninformed staff assured us that the one of their salads was safe for those that have a gluten intolerance. As it turns out nothing could be further from the truth as the main ingredient in the salad was on the list as major offender and should not be eaten by those that have gluten intolerance and especially those that have celiac disease. When confronted the manager began to play word games over how it was described and how their nutritionist said it was safe. It is patently obvious that they do not know what the impact of their ingredients may have on some people and if they did use a nutritionist the person is either not communicating or horribly unqualified. This is a subject for the health department. Do they really know what they are serving? Faro is a major offender as it is Egyptian wheat with a name in Latin that means wheat. Regretfully this is probably the fourth experience we have had at Foode that has had some negative aspect. Cold food, poorly prepared, etc... While we need good restaurants in downtown Fredericksburg, Foode is not the answer. Cutesy yes, but the rest is lost on me. We eat out very often. I will not be back. Period

Tried this place while visiting Fredericksburg based on Yelp reviews. Someone said they had great hamburgers and they were absolutely right, it was awesome. Their local organic beef burger of the night had sweet tomato relish and pesto. The sweetness of the relish worked amazingly well with the pesto. The bun was an artisan roll not some plain packaged roll from the grocery store. The fries that were served with the burger were hand cut and varied thickness increasing the interest. They were liberally sprinkled with salt and house spices making for a wonderful treat. I'm a beer drinker and their local and non-local craft beer selection was outstanding with a little of everything. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in or visiting Fredericksburg.

Our family stopped by here for Sunday brunch. Love the concept of organic, farm-to-table dining out and this place is a small gem hidden in downtown Fredericksburg. The food is simple, delicious and elegantly prepared. Probably the best restaurant in Fredericksburg and on par with bistros in larger cities.

Absolutely delightful restaurant! We've tried almost everything on the menu. Burgers are fantastic: Juicy, flavorful, and delicious!!! One of the best restaurants in Fredericksburg! In fact, we've never had a single bad meal here! Service is friendly, portions are just right (not too little, not too much), environment is bustling, courtyard has quaint seating, and there is great pride in customer service. We'll be back again and again!!! Note: The restaurant is small and can get very crowded, but staff is very efficient when tables turn over. Wait times are generally low. Go straight to the register since this is where you will order and pay...even before you are seated. Menu: foodeonline.com/this-wee…

I really liked the atmosphere here. It is a strange mixture of fancy upscale and cheap casual. You order at the counter and get directed to one of the eclectic mix of tables and chairs. The sign says that they don't accept tips. If you only have 2 people, the big comfy leather chairs are great. You serve your own tap water which is the best I've ever had. They soak oranges in the water which makes it just barely sweet. The menu and the intimate atmosphere though make it seem fancy. I tried some of their crostini, pimiento cheese toast, and a bowl of vegetarian risotto. I also split an order of their tasty milk and cookies with a couple friends. It is a decent place for vegetarians and well priced.

This restaurant is on a nice street with easy street parking. You enter the restaurant through a cool alleyway that they have cleverly used as outdoor space. We were greeted cheerily by all staffers we passed...love that. It was a bit chaotic at the front door, but we did walk in at the same time as a party of 18. it wasn't clear what we were supposed to do, but we figured it out. Hint: get a menu, pick what you want, order and pay for it, THEN you get seated. We actually got seated rather quickly...Annie could not have been nicer. We got the "pigs and figs" app and it was delectable. Best thing we ate. I got the pork chop, it was large, a tad overdone and needed seasoning. The accompaniment was good and my savignon blanc was crisp and tasty. My son's burger was good, still could use a little seasoning. Daughter's chicken dish looked lovely, but a tad dry. Husband had the sausage dish and liked it, but was not blown away. Husband loved the beer choices. Waitstaff had great attitudes, cheerful and always checking on us. Waitpeople were going by us, bellowing people's names to deliver plates to customers through the meal, a bit distracting. The place was packed, with people waiting and no reservations accepted, although everyone seemed ok with a 25 - 30 minute wait. All in all, a darling place, good concept, great staff, pretty good food. It's all in the details now, folks. I give you a 3.5...you can do better!!

We were in Fredericksburg for a few days and went to yelp to find a place to eat. Food was well reviewed and with good reason. We got there around 6:30 pm one evening and they were running out of hamburgers, that's probably a good thing, it means they are worth ordering. Going in you need to know some ground rules, there is no traditional table service, you will be greeted and handed a menu, then you order at the cash register and take a seat. From there the great staff will bring your food and drinks. If you want more drinks you need to pay at the register again. I admit the system seemed odd, but it worked surprisingly well. They also have a note that says tips not required as they do not have real table service...you will probably want to leave a few bucks anyway because it is worth it. The food. I had a Za burger which was basically a hamburger with pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese. It was delicious. They ran out of buns so had to stop serving that burger, however some customers convinced them to serve the burger sans rolls, they asked for the burger on white bread but the chef wouldn't serve it that way, it would compromise the burger....I love to cook and had to agree that putting the pizza burger on white bread would have been a mistake. Bravo to the chef for sticking to principle. My wife had a delicious Risotto. The menu is not too big, a few well prepared dishes, maybe the right term would be artisan minimalist (I made that up but you get the point). Go to their website and read the owners story, it all makes sense after you read about their background. Note....they close around 8 and may run out of some items, get there early and you won't be disappointed. Great job Foode!

Delicious, fresh, locally sourced, organic ingredients. The best burger in Fredericksburg. On the pricier end of the scale, but the quality of the food makes it worth it. Untraditional tip-free service keeps things more affordable. A very quaint, local, atmosphere.

While on vacation, we checked Yelp and found this restaurant while on our way to Dulles Airport from Williamsburg, VA. It's tucked away in this small, quaint neighborhood. The food was great!! I had a black bean burger with pimiento cheese that was mouth watering. And, they had this lemon orange thyme cooler that was amazingly good!! If I'm ever that way again, I will definitely return!!

Went to Foode on Sunday afternoon. The brunch menu is a bit limited. It has everything you would want for breakfast, but it lacks a bit on the "unch" side. A few salad options and maybe a sandwhich or two would have been nice. That said the food was quite tasty. I had fried chicken w/ scrambled eggs, a buttermilk biscuit and hashbrowns. Yum. The biscuit was a bit on the heavy side, but the chicken was perfection and the hashbrowns were also right on. Best thing I ordered was mint ice tea w/ a shot of simple syrup on the side. Fresh mint in the summer is where it's at.

This place is one of the things I miss about living in Fredericksburg. The food is so delicious and thoughtful. Nothing makes me happier at a restaurant than eating food that comes from local farms, prepared with care by an excellent chef, and then served by friendly staff. This may describe other establishments as well, but what makes this place special is that they make it affordable! And also, their 0% pretentious atmosphere.

Once again - Foode knocked it out of the park! My son and I had the fried chicken with cheese grits and bacon studded greens. I consider myself a fried chicken aficionado and Foode never disappoints! My husband had a perfectly cooked burger with yummy fries and my daughter had the grilled cheese kids meal - one of her favorites. We all finished it off with the Not Allowed to call it Snickers bar. Service was great and everyone was friendly as usual. The quality of the food for the price is unbeatable in downtown Fredericksburg.

If I hadn't eaten at Maple Street Restaurant so soon before eating here I may have thought more highly, but it does pale in comparison as far as locavore cuisine goes. I had fig, bacon, brie bruschetta for which I forget the clever name. The cheese just didn't have enough bite to counter the smoothness of the fig for me. The bacon was phenomenal. My wife had a burger that was divine. It is definitely cramped but friendly so that's a wash. Certainly worth the time if you're in Fred Vegas.

Stopped here for dinner on my way back up to Northern Virginia after reading great Yelp reviews. Very unique atmosphere. You order up front and they bring the food to you but tips are not allowed. Comfortable seats inside or you can sit outside down the alley where the restaurant is located. I had the cheeseburger with parmesan foode fries. Delicious! My girlfriend had the risotto and it was nothing special. They also have warm chocolate chip cookies with a glass of milk for dessert. Good idea! I'm surprised you don't see that more at other restaurants.

We just came into the Fredericksburg area with friends and, based on Yelp reviews, decided to take them to Foode for dinner. We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and service. The food was nothing to brag about, however. Our friends just completed a marathon so whatever they had in front of them they ate quickly. The homemade rosemary bread was outstanding but the entrees were inconsistent. We had the pork bowl, and my friend had the sweet corn risotto. The pork bowls were dry and flavorless, with undercooked rice. The amount of pork was meager and also dry. Other dishes (salads, burgers) being eaten around us looked better, so maybe we just ordered the wrong things. Overall, we wanted to like Foode and probably will go back and try something for lunch. Not sure it is a dinner place to bring friends, but more a lunch/pizza place...

Great unassuming place. Had the tomato & cumin soup then the buttermilk chicken biscuit sandwich - it includes egg and cheese with a side of fried potatoes. Really enjoyed.

Love this place. Love the local ingredients and the variety of their menu. Their food speaks for itself and shows their talent and passion. Small and quaint, not fussy, and even my 5 year old loved it. Delicious and can't wait to return!

I got the Groupon for this place and I will definitely be back. I arrived a about 20 minutes before they were supposed to close for the day (Sunday brunch) but I was served and seated immediately. The ordering here works a little differently than most restaurants - you view the menu, order at the counter, then take a seat and your food is brought out to you. There's a gigantic glass water cooler in the dining room that has sliced oranges in it so the water tastes fresh and delicious. The food I had was fresh and sourced from local vendors which is a plus. Very rustic space with modern touches and a small market area where you can take home raw sugar, fresh organic produce, wine and other goodies.

I eat out...a lot. This is hands down one of the best places for dinner I have eaten at. It is simple - no fancy tablecloths, it is all about the food. What do I like the most? Simple - 1) the food is great. I don't mean kinda good, like most top tier restaurants (food is good, experience is great, looks nice etc.) I mean the food here is awesome. They care about food and you can taste it! 2) the place is relaxed, and the people are cool. 3) the prices are VERY reasonable. There is a small mark up on wine, so 2 people could eat dinner with apps and a bottle wine for well under $70!!!! This place is a must try for dinner...plan on trying lunch here next week!

Grilled cheese was amazing, and the potato salad definitely changed my outlook on that side dish. I ate lunch in the market area downstairs, so i don't have anything to say about the upstairs portion of the restaurant, but if it's anything like the market, it's incredible. Interesting location, awesome artwork on the walls, fantastic food, overall cool place to check out.

Oh my Green Goddess! This place has something for everyone. I have eaten at Foode many times and I have NEVER been dissappointed. I am more than happy to support a restaurant that supports local farmers. There really is a difference in taste when the food is local and in season. Their house salad is one of my favorites. There is an assortment of greens that are peppery, sweet, and pungent. The aged cheddar cubes add a sharp creaminess while the candied bacon takes this dish to another level. Who doesn't love bacon? The salad is lightly dressed with Foode's Green Goddess dressing...wow! It's creamy but the fresh herbs really make it kind of light. Their soups are amazing (especially the potato....bring it back), the Thai fried rice is simple but scrumptious, and the chicken cheese steak sandwich is savory and smoky. Brunch is great, I was really excited to see Benton's bacon on the menu. Keep up the good work ladies!

The burgers are GREAT! I love the laid back feel of the place. It's nice to have a place in Fredericksburg committed to using local farmers. You can taste the quality of the food.

This is one of my favorite places in Fredericksburg, I discovered it thanks to YELP and food has been excellent every time I have been there. Very creative dishes that is locally sourced and excellent beer. The only thing I would caution folks on is that the weekend lines can be long and we have only been there over lunch, but on our last visit they ran out of 2 of the 5 lunch entrees. Also, follow the foot traffic in, you are suppose to order first before you sit down!

While the food is actually pretty awesome, the service as been hit or miss! I've given the place nearly six chances and it's fallen short most times. The signature dishes - chicken and biscuit - is amazing - other dishes lack consistency. When asked about the inconsistency the waitperson was almost surly and instead of remaking my order just simply returned it to my table with the added ingredient laid on top. I decided not to eat it ... unsure if I will give this restaurant another go ... which is sad, because I really like small local places and was hoping this could be a regular spot ...

Really wanted to love this place however the food is just ok to me. Glad that it is all local and organic but I have never had anything blow me away. It all tastes fine just not great if you know what I mean. Plus they need to move to a better location now that they are so popular. Bringing food from upstairs outside to downstairs and inside is just weird. Especially in the winter.

My husband and I have gone here several times and have loved every single visit! On one occasion we even called ahead for a table for a large group and they went above and beyond by saving us space on a very busy Friday night. The food is amazing, and the staff is too sweet. We recommend Foode to everyone!

My boyfriend and I came here for a late lunch, early dinner on New Years Eve. We thought it was great!! He had a hamburger and I had the chicken salad sandwich. We both got the fries. His burger was cooked perfectly. My sandwich had large chunks of chicken and was delicious. The fries are amazing! The service was great too. I love that you pay when you order, which means that you don't have to wait for a server and deal with all that. I think that the inside could use a little color on the walls and maybe they could dim the lights a little. But those things would not deter us from going back. The food and service were both wonderful!

We really enjoyed this restaurant. Local ingredients, kid friendly, casual with a great building and decor. All of the people working here were helpful, friendly and warm. We had a great experience.

It still gets two stars, but I wanted to add that my husband ended up writing the management here and they sent a refund for the chicken entree we paid for ($16 something and tax). I believe the response included lots of excuses about how that was a particularly busy night - so take it as you will. Still kind of surprised they didn't care to further encourage us to dine again, but I guess I'm used to businesses actually caring if their customers are happy.

This is my new favorite restaurant. locally purchased produce, and food made with passion. It's a small restaurant so not a ton of seating. When you enter you can grab a seat then go order your food at the counter, but then it's great service after that. I also found my new favorite beer during our visit last night.

I don't want to sound pretentious when I say this, but I feel pretty qualified to review since I've been a fixture of the Fredericksburg restaurant scene for the last 20 years or so. I've eaten at all the "required" places, have been called a "regular" in many, and have seen even more, good and bad, come, stay, and go the way of the dodo. And without reservation, I say that FOODE is my favorite of them all, hands-down, past or present. FOODE is not a restaurant; it's an experience. They fill a niche in the 'Burg that no one else really does, and they do it superbly well. Great food, locally procured/organic, and a weekly menu that is a pleasant combination of both standbys and surprises every week. One of the things I like most is the fact that you're not overwhelmed with a huge menu, but with the same choices every week: they shop, they pick up what's great that week, and they build a menu round that. When I was younger and living at home lo many moons ago, I didn't have too much say in what mom and dad had for dinner, but I didn't much care: it was all good. They sat it in front of me, and I ate it, and I loved it. FOODE is like that. I have no say in what goes on the menu, and I don't care. It's ALL good. When I pick FOODE, they could pretty much bring me a plate of whatever and I'd love it--it's THAT good. It's fresh. It's simplecomplex. It's varied without being overwhelming. It's delicious. It's perfectly portioned. It's a culinary adventure in my regulated life as a writer. FOODE's gonna be a restaurant in my novel somewhere. Their byline is, "gourmet for the rest of us." I have, I think, a better one: "Come Taste the Love." Because you really can taste the love. These folks obviously love what they do, and you can taste it. Really. I had a baked pork bowl as my first dish at FOODE, and if Jesus's two grandmothers weren't Jewish, I'd have sworn they were back there in the kitchen. It was absolutely one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth--an opera on a plate. We've been back for brunch and dinner several times since, and I was no less impressed with the all-veggie scramble and the gruyere and country ham omelette. The biscuit with blackberry butter is a must-try. Chicken and waffles? Marvelous. Fig and chevre crostini? Superb. Pimento cheese like something Batman would come in for, in his tights, at 2 ayem, if they were open. Pimento cheese? Really? Elevated from snack food to symphony? Yep. Really. But as fabulous as the food is at FOODE, it's excellence is rivaled, perhaps dangerously so, by the staff. Friendly and attentive to perfection may be an understatement. I LOVE these guys. They're smiling while running round like chickens with their heads cut off. And I honestly believe they're really happy to see us when we come in. You can't fake that, at least not for this old boy. And the ladies all look like they've just stepped out of a Jane Austen novel--for a literary man, what's not to love? Add to this a cozy, laid-back atmosphere and great prices (no tips, too, and I HATE not leaving a tip here--that's the ONLY thing I don't like about FOODE), and you have what amounts to an unbeatable combination. I can have a week at work that makes the Spanish Inquisition look like a Sunday-school picnic, and a meal at FOODE makes me into a new man. Lord, thank You for food, the strength of our bodies, and thank You for FOODE. Prosper and preserve it, and all they that keep it. Amen. Rush, I say, RUSH, to FOODE. You're missing out on one of the great little things in life if you don't. But for pity's sake, please don't take my table. I'll need it soon enough.

The hummus was to die for and their pita was mouth watering. The girls working that evening were helpful and efficient and my fiancé and I enjoyed the privacy Foode's little alley nook provided.

I was visiting my sister at UMW this weekend and we decided to try this place for lunch. WOW. We sat outside with our dog, who received a free treat--a nice one too--from the pet store/dog bakery across the street. They had great Maine root beer and the food was behind good. Hand cut fries with black pepper aioli, curry aoili and chipotle ketchup were by far the best fries I've ever had. My black bean burger with house made pimento cheese was terrific, and my sister's pizza with salad was great. The rice pudding brulee was good, not overly sweet, and the chocolate chip cookies were soft and chewy and came with a glass of milk. Total: forty bucks and worth every penny.

This is definitely my favorite restaurant in Fredericksburg (granted, there's not a lot of strong competition). They have superb brunch (the biscuits and creamed honey in particular, get there early on weekends because they always run out of biscuits). I'm consistently happy ordering the Big Nasty, which changes every week. Their mimosas are excellent also, if you're in the mood for drinking in the morning. If you're going for lunch, the burger or the curry chicken salad sandwich are pretty much always good. The outside seating in small brick courtyard is really nice if you're into fresh air or want to bring your dog. The service is friendly and efficient without fail. As an added bonus there is no tipping, so it's high-quality food for a reasonable price. Without a doubt go here if you've never been.

Got the groupon for Foode a few weeks back and I'm SO glad I did. The menu is small and may lead you to believe the taste will be as well. NOT SO! I had the pan roasted chicken and the hubby had a chicken pasta dish. We also got a bottle of wine with dinner. We had a $40.00 groupon and ended up paying $1.11. So - even without the coupon, dinner was a steal and the food was DELECTIBLE! THe portions were large enough for me to have lunch with my dinner leftovers. THe only odd thing was the way service is set up - you order at the counter, then find a table and they bring the food to you. No big deal, just a bit unexpected. THe kitchen is actually upstairs so if you can get a seat near or in view of the door you can look at all of the entrees as they come in. A good way to pick out what you'll have the next time you come - and I GUARANTEE there will be a next time. The menu may be small, but what they do, they do RELLY well.

Chicken and waffles were great. Not too busy on a Saturday morning around 10:00am. A bit pricey for breakfast/brunch. 2 adults, 1 toddler = $42.

We finally made it to Foode and had a good meal. We'll need to go back since a few of the items we had were not to our pallet. The egplant spread appetizer was sweet and we are a savory duo. Ditto for the squash puree that was under the excellently prepared pork chop. The burger was great. Best parts of the dinner were the $15 bottle of organic Malbec and the french fries! More research is definitely needed. Closes at 3 for lunch and 8 for dinner. Fun.

This place in great, hidden away down a walkway off of Caroline Street, nice atmosphere, good food. I had the Apple, Bacon, Havarti Cheese sandwich, yumm.

I almost couldn't find the restaurant at first, as it's a bit tucked away despite being on Caroline Street. But the service was wonderful, as was the food. Inside, the restaurant has an old, rustic décor, which I found very nice. The cost of the meal was a bit of a reach for a college student, but still very doable. Overall, I definitely recommend coming to Foode.

After reading the review on here we went on our monthly date night and were immediately impressed. The appitizer, burgers fries and especially the cookies were amazing! I have never had such friendly staff, great atmosphere and the food is hands down amazing and unique. We love Diffrent and the food is definitely fine, fresh, never cold, and superb. Thank you Foode for a great night! I recommend coming before 730 on Saterday night though.

Driving home to NC from DC, looked for early dinner and found this place on Yelp, thanks so much! We could not be happier. Curried cauliflower pizza, black bean burger, (with great fries) with cheese toasts to start left us too full for what must be fabulous desserts. Giving it five stars for what it is, a casual, not too-expensive small setting. Love the organic fresh ingredients, and staff could not have been nicer. We will definitely go out of our way to return.

Had a great lunch Christmas week with my daughter, who was home from CA. We sat outside and were quite comfortable with the heaters they have. The burger was delicious and the fries were very tasty. We had some hot chocolate and it was soooooo good. The people there are all so friendly. Great place to eat.

This is a cute little place tucked in an alley off Caroline Street. You go up and order and then they tell you where to sit (you're not supposed to tip). It's definitely casual and yet sophisticated. Definitely try the little crostinis, they're delish and only a dollar. I got a goat cheese crostini with pesto and a pimento cheese toast. Then I had the vegetable risotto. A lot of stuff on the menu seemed oriented around what was in season, which I like, and it looked like they change the menu often. This is a lovely gem of a place!

My husband and I went here tonight for our anniversary. It was a cute place and well priced. I LOVED the organic root beer they served and appreciated seeing local art on the wall. I had the cherry-apple salad, which was really yummy. I really loved the pecans. I wish there would've have been some actual feta on it instead of creamy feta, but that's because I love feta. My husband had the pork bowl and said it was really yummy. We had a great time and my only complaint was that the way their fan and lights are situated it made for a strobe light effect.

There is not one word that can be used to describe how amazing everything is at my favorite restaurant ever! The food is fresh, healthy, and so delicious. Other than the food, the workers are so nice to be around and to talk to. There is also a family vibe around the staff is very nice to see. The service is super quick and accurate. The menu varies from meal to meal and day to day, but there is nothing on the menu that isn't worthy of being the best food that you have ever had. I would give Foode one billion stars if I could!

Horrible-Food really expensive- Bread and Oil 8 dollars (it's olive oil). Asian rice dish was 14 dollars. They were out of Pasta at 6:30 p.m. There is no service. You sit-get a menu-then get up and walk to the cash register and order and pay. I suppose if you want another beer you have to repeat this process...... When I go out and spend this kind of money I am buying the food and the experience which includes service. Sorry-Never going back

My wife and I had lunch at Foode today and thanks to other Yelpers we knew what to expect and what to look for on this week's menu. Everything we ate was fresh, perfectly prepared and delicious: cheese toast, cherry/pecan/apple salad, black bean burger, chicken cheese steak sandwich, fries, potato salad, Maine root beer and ginger brew and chocolate chip cookies and milk. Great service by everyone, met the owners and can't wait to go back as we started thinking about how to spend our next day in Fredericksburg. Also should mention we found it very quaint to sit outside.

Yummy - that is the best way to describe our dinner there. There were four of us and we each tried something different and everyone's meal was excellent. I NEVER order fried chicken, but I'd heard theirs was good so I decided to give it a try. Delicious! Steaks, pizzelle and burgers were also fantastic. Great environment - casual and comfortable yet still feels cozy. We'll definitely be back.

I really, really like this place. Both food and vibe were terrific. I had the fried chicken biscuit, country fries and the mint tea...all were very good! I'll definitely stop by and try a different dish the next time I'm in Fredericksburg.

These are people who really care about food and people. The food is incredibly good, high quality ingredients cooked to perfection. The staff understands that the are serving people not just showing off food. Food and drinks are chosen because they are good not just interesting. Come here again and again.

Nice little restaurant with a lot of personality. My family really enjoyed their meals...mine, however, was a little dry (pork carnitas). Inside seating was a bit warm. Pricing seemed reasonable. Parking on the street was very accessible. Overall, a decent experience.

My husband and I had the AMAZING experience of dining at Foode last night!! The ambiance is just soooo cool from the modern design to the placement of every lemon slice. This same vibe permeates through every item on the menu---FRESH and INNOVATIVE recipes from the black bean dip with homemade chips (to die for), light pasta dishes (pasta caprese :-)))) to the comforting creamy spring rissoto and on and on. As each dish passed by, I had to reign myself in a bit because it was such a difficult choice, but everything we tried was over the top delicious. We were sooo excited to get to meet the amazing chef (Joy) and the "does everything else" (Beth) You couldn't meet 2 more gracious people!! They work so hard every single day, and it shows in everything they've done!! We will definitely be back!!! Fantastic!! Whoooo Hooooo!!!
