Beautiful shop, fantastic food, incredible service. Everything I've tried thus far has been great: sweet potato salad, German potato salad, chicken salad sandwich, corned beef hash & scrambled eggs sandwich, turkey & bacon & avocado sandwich, pumpkin upsidedown cake, lavender cookie, butterscotch shortbread, ginger chew. Wonderful!

So good! For restaurant week a Co worker and I decided to get lunch here to go, and we were not disappointed! Their restaurant week special included two beverages, two side salads or soups, two sandwiches and two pastries all for just $20! The soup came with some sort of poppyseed bread and butter and the butter tasted so fresh like it was just churned. The bread was soft and had just the slightest hint of sweetness to it. For soup we got chili corn chowder, which the name is misleading. I thought it would be chili with corn in it, but not so much. It was not chili and there was no corn in it, I think they meant chili as in pepper, corn chowder as in they pureed corn to give it a correct texture. They put a cheese on it which melted and turned gooey so I wasn't complaining after the initial confusion was gone! My sandwich I ordered was the balsamic chicken, which had sliced chicken, balsamic aioli, lettuce and tomato on a seasoned hoagie roll. It could have used a raw red onion, but I could be biased, as I put onion on everything! The sandwich was amazing, to say the least! For my dessert I went with pineapple upside down cake. It was adorable and single serving sized. The cake could have been more moist, but it wasn't bad. More sweet than I typically like things, but still very good. I'm a little picky about cakes because I bake very well, so if it's not better than mine, I'm not impressed. Wonderful place, very cute inside the refurbished church. They have their sandwiches pre made so there's virtually no waitfor your food. You go through the line cafeteria style and pay at the register , very efficient operations they have going on here! I'll definitely be back!

My son & I typically come to the Burg once a week during the summer. We make our rounds to our favs, the library & then decide where we will have lunch. Today we tried Eileen's for the first time. I have to say I was disappointed, my son not so much. I like to be positive so here goes; like the atmosphere old church not cluttered seems clean, tho the layout is odd. There are flags directing you where to order/pay & where to pick up, however no one seems to pay attention to them (except me). Maybe if the order/pay area was up at the front when you walk in it would be less confusing for those who don't obey signs anyway. My son had 1/2 tuna "melt" sandwich, Caesar salad side & chocolate crinkle cookie. He did not have the sandwich heated. He said it was all very tasty. This IS a compliment as he ordinarily does not order tuna. I ordered the 1/2 ham, spinach & Brie sandwich & Caesar salad side. Positive first: spinach wasn't wilted, Brie tasty, and the salad dressing and homemade croutons had a good flavor. Bread was very dry. Ham had a lot of fat & grizzle. Instead of Caesar salad my side should have been called "cold cheese & stuffing". I'm not fond of deconstructing my food. I'm not giving up on Eileen's we will be back. Maybe I'll try the tuna.

With my sister coming from the north and I the south, Fredericksburg is a convenient place for us to meet up. This time we decided upon Eileen's Bakery. I was curious about this place, since I had read it was located in an old church. While it did look like a church, other than a stained glass window, it wasn't an interesting one. You walk in and are faced with a line and we found out why. The first counter is filled with a nice variety of sweetness. Scones, cupcakes, etc. All better looking than the last. The next case has the sandwiches and sides, followed by another case with a few bakery items and finally the cashier. I ordered an apple fritter and coffee. My sister had a sandwich, a boston cream with cherries donut and tea. Finding a clean table was fairly difficult and there didn't appear to be anyone assigned to that task. I managed to find one that was reasonably clean. The apple fritter wasn't bad, rather listless listless. The coffee was good. My sister like her chicken salad sandwich and we both loved the boston cream donut. Upon finishing up, I thought to myself, I would come back here for the other bakery items and coffee, if the mood struck me right..Not an overwhelming endorsement, but the best I can do based on my first experience there.

This place is a jewel. They not only have the most delicious pastries, but also wonderful staff. I recently got married at Westmoreland State Park and needed to find a place to make cupcakes for the reception. I found Eileens on Yelp. We picked up the cupcakes on our way down and were running late. I was so busy with things that I had not checked how late they were opened till. One of their staff was kind enough to give me a call and then wait after closing time so that I would be able to pick up the cupcakes. They were fabulous and everyone raved about the cupcakes....simply delicious.

The baked goods, salads and sandwiches are really good. The service had a lot to be desired on the day we went there. The service was so bad, that despite the good food, my husband refuses to go here again. The server had trouble with our order, forgot the side salad and then they were out of it when we FINALLY got our order. They gave us the wrong sandwich also.
(3)Rebecca T.
Absolutely outstanding. My experience with this bakery has never been anything less than stellar. Not only that but I have frequented many, many times being a local resident. Their pastries are second to none, and having lived in Paris for four years I do know a good pastry. Never overly sugary, perfect textures and balanced ingredients. I thought I didn't like bear claws until I tried theirs. The breakfast sandwiches are the best in town. Wraps with house-made chorizo, fried green tomato sandwiches on house-made English muffins and so much more. I know the custom cakes were unavailable when the owners had a baby, but they were still baking cakes for sale. The pistachio is a favorite of mine. I would recommend this business without any reservation.
(5)Sophie W.
The food was pretty good, but this restaurant isn't very newbie friendly. The menu is up on a chalk board and then there are sandwiches in the case to choose from, but there are no descriptions regarding what exactly is on the sandwich. If I go back maybe I'll just build my own sandwich. The place gets busy and I felt awkward trying to decide what I wanted. The baked goods looked and tasted ah-mazing!!!! I'll definitely be back at least for those.

Delicious sandwich, fresh and tasty, pleasant staff, nice shaded patio.

This place was one of the few options open on Sunday morning and we made the mistake of going here. Painfully unorganized, poor service. We ordered two coffees and a premade sandwich and it took 25min for them to give us the wrong order. Anything would be better than Eileen's, even McDonald's.

While waiting in line during a lunch rush I almost drooled while gazing at their apple tart. And I had plenty of time to drool, as the line to the front counter was quite long. We split a turkey sandwich with all kinds of stuff on a parmesan bread. Delicious, but I almost hate the service. No fault toward the staff, but some of them seem a bit clueless. While the rush wore off and everyone was eating, we sat waiting for our sandwich while the entire staff was gossiping. Finally one of staff came to our table while she was refilling her water. She asked if we were still waiting. 5 minutes later we see a tall teenage kid leave the kitchen with what seems to be our sandwich. But wait? Where are you going? He walks to our table, looks at us, leaves, goes to the patio, comes back, goes to the table next to us, offers them our sandwich (and the woman said "that isn't ours, but we'll take it"), then finally he comes to our table and gives us our sandwich. The number on our table wasn't hiding, but sure. About the sandwich: good. The parmesan bread was slightly underbaked, but not overly underbaked. A happy sandwich makes a happy gal; and that's exactly what I was. I love that Eileen's is a converted church-- I love the atmosphere. We'll definitely go back next time we're in Fredericksburg.
(4)Jay H.
My wife and I have been here at least twice. Every time we have tried sandwiches from the glass display case and they have been utterly delicious! Seriously some of the best I have had. The bread has always been great also. It is busy so the food is fresh. Made to order sandwiches can take a little while to come out. We will definitely be going back.
(4)Kelly K.
I've been meaning to stop by Eileen's ever since we moved to Fredericksburg. I am so sorry it took me this long! We had lunch here today, and it was great! First of all, Eileen's is now in an old (early 1800's) church, so the atmosphere is really cool. They have cases of prepared sandwiches, but I chose to make my own. You have several different breads to choose from, lots of veggies, different cheeses, etc. Hubby got a pre-made egg salad sandwich with a side of tomato salad, and said it was really good. They have lots of different chips to choose from, too. We got our son a chocolate-chip cookie, and he ate it, then asked for another. There were some pastries and cupcakes calling my name, but I ignored them. This is the perfect place for lunch in Fredericksburg.
(4)Mark D.
Food is OUTRAGEOUSLY GOOD! Love it, love it, love it.
(5)Jasmine C.
I took a friend who was visiting Virginia to Eileen's Bakery. While we were looking at the items in the bakery case, the lady behind the counter was violently coughing and sneezing on the items without covering her mouth or washing her hands or turning around. The couple in line behind us saw this and immediately turned and left the restaurant. We should have done that too, but we were starving and stayed. We both got horribly sick (respiratory sick, not stomach sick) a couple days later. So absolutely disgusting.
(1)Carol B.
Here from out of town and saw this very cool old church converted into a cafe and thought I would try lunch there--the amazing assortment of sandwhiches and salads drew me in right away!!! I had the Green goddess sandwish and it was DELCIOUS!!! I had no staff issues at all. Everybody was very nice and I would definitely go here again and again! Everything was sooo fresh and creative!!! The coconut cupcakes are to die for!!
(5)Michael D.
We decided to go to Eileen's based on the reviews that were posted and also from their website which boasted some pretty cool creative sandwiches. In our adventures in locating good, independent cafes as a pose to chain restaurants, this one sounded like a great pick. When we got there, the location was quaint and the building had several sections in it, with a separate coffee bar section that was dark, dreary and uninviting - not to mention no customers or workers in it. The menu that was online was about 5% of what was really there. They had a few sandwiches that were on the menu, but it seemed to have turned into a "create your own" sandwich type deal. The macaroni salad I got with my sandwich was pretty good although the mayonnaise dressing was a bit overpowering. They mixed up my partner's sandwich and mine, by switching our cheeses and they ran out of white bread and pickles as we ordered (Who runs out of pickles?). As for the "bakery" part, the case was half empty and had a sign over it saying "were not accepting cake orders". Not exactly what i was expecting in terms of a bakery. I guess I was expecting more. The website promotes two trained culinarians as owners, yet I just didn't see the quality. The restaurant location itself has a lot of potential and unfortunately its somewhere I wouldn't drive to on purpose.

Eileen's is simply the best bakery I've ever been to. Their pastries are delicious beyond compare. Their sandwiches are good too. The ambiance is very pleasant as well. I'm sitting here trying to think of one negative thing to say about it and all I can come up with is that the hours are too short. They close at 4pm, I believe. It's my favorite place to eat in Old Town Fredericksburg.
(5)Mo B.
When my husband and I compared notes after our busy day today, he complained to me that he waited and waited while Eileen made a sandwich for the lady in front of him, all the while not making any eye contact or notice of his presence, and neither did any of the other 3 staff present. My husband and the lady wanting a sandwich and a desert were the only two people in the store and he was completely ignored by all of the staff. He said this is not the first time this has happened to him (his office is nearby), but this time instead of leaving, he decided to see how long it would take. He's a nice, gentle, and patient man, and he always gives people the benefit of the doubt. If Eileens' doesn't make it, it's because of lack of customer care. The food is good. But, seriously, Eileen needs to notice her customers and make them feel welcome--all of them.
(2)Kimmy M.
The food here is delicious and reasonably priced. I was surprised to see it so empty on a Saturday morning. But then I discovered what might be the reason - even though the shop opens at 8 on Saturday, and even though we got there well past 8 (around 8:45 or so) there was only one burrito and one sandwich choice, not the full compliment that is on the menu. Which is where it loses one star with me. Would I go back? Yes because what we had (the George's Mess Burrito) was marvelous, but I would set my expectations accordingly.
(4)Cristina G.
I like going to Eileen's. Their food is fresh, delicious, and innovative. I love the new location close to the library (well, not that new, but not where they used to be) and I go at least once a month with friends. The sandwiches are great, the pastries are WOW, and I always take something home. That said. sometimes service is slow. Lately they are trying the "take a number" system and even then it takes a while. It seems like staff don't know what to do, they look confused sometimes. I will order and go to pay and they will tell me they are going to have my food at the register, then the cashier will ask if I got a number for my table so they can bring my food. And vice versa. Just yesterday I arrived just before noon and wanted a build-your-own sandwich and the young lady nicely had me wait because they weren't ready for lunch yet. As soon as I paid there were 10 people in line. So I wish they would get organized. But the food is great.
(4)Sue H.
Great location, atmosphere, food, and coffee (they serve Blackstone, a local brew, my favorite). The dining area is large with some sofa seating. I have experienced them to be kid-friendly, but the menu in my opinion is for those that want to experience a gourmet taste in their sandwich, wrap, quiche, or dessert/cookie/brownie. The bread selection is awesome. The last thing I ate there was a spinach something or other, but just know that it was DELICIOUS and I would go back for it in a heartbeat. Well, on second thought, I probably wouldn't truly get that exact same thing... they always have SOMETHING else that appeals to my senses to throw me off from going for a 2nd run of what I last ordered. I thank my friend Brandi for recommending this place to me over 2 years ago after I tried an apple tart that she ordered & brought to a function. YUM! My mother in law who visits us from CA quite a bit loves this place because it reminds her a lot of Napa Valley cuisine.
(5)Alix H.
Run, do not walk to Eileen's and come hungry because it will be impossible to choose among the amazing treats. The banana cupcake (smothered in chocolate) is one of the most delicious cupcakes that I have ever eaten and I have eaten cupcakes from several of DC's finest as well as Philly cupcake and wow - completely fantastic!!! We looked for breakfast on the way down 95 and drove four miles out of the way for Eileen's -- it was more than worth it and we will be back every time we are in the area. YUMMMMM!!! Oh and the setting is fantastic too -- the restored church is gorgeous! My only comment would be that the sandwiches would taste MUCH better headed in a convection oven -- the bread gets a little soggy in the microwave.
(5)Mike C.
The food is very, very good. The ambiance, an old 1830's church, is really nice. The only problem is that the service is a little bit off. The folks behind the counter seem just a little bit too confused. More than one of them. I'm not sure what that's about. I didn't get the sandwich that I ordered, but the one that I got was good nonetheless.
(3)Deborah B.
A little off the main path, but spread the word-Eileen's is outstanding! The best pastry and sandwiches I've had in Fredericksburg!
(5)Elizabeth L.
I ate at Eileen's a few time in their old location and always enjoyed the food. Yesterday I hosted a shower for a friend in their new location, and the service and food were both great! They were friendly and accomodating, even with people showing up without RSVPs (okay, that annoyed me more than them, but they were fine with adding food and giving us more plates). We ended late, after closing, and they never made us feel rushed, though I'm sure they wanted to go home! Everyone raved about the food - we had a buffet, and the options were the vegetarian, almond chicken salad, ham asaparagus and brie sandwiches, plus the house salad and the sweet potato walnut salad. Finally, we had a pastry selection and a strawberry frasier cake for dessert. The only problem - I specifically mentioned that the guest of honor was allergic to chocolate and requested that they go easy on the chocolate for the pasry platter, but only one choice was chocolate free. Lucikly, we had the delicious cake!

Great food. We purchase brioche rolls every sat/sun. The breakfast sandwiches are always great and the downtowner is the best way to end a pleasant dining experience.
(5)Meg H.
Stopped in here after touring the battlefields. Awesome location! Chai tea was amazing and wild rice soup, sandwiches, and salad were delicious!!
(5)Mary C.
I love eileens. Their sandwiches are amazing they have delicious ice teas and bakery items. I try to go every time I visit Fredericksburg, don't pass it up it's gem!
(5)Laura P.
I LOVE Eileen's!! The almond bear claw is a favorite among pastries. I've never had a sandwich I didn't like. The cookies and other sweet treats are delightful though I haven't tried as many of these since they're constantly rotating. I discovered this place in my last year as a college student at Mary Washington and now stop in F'burg for breakfast or lunch at Eileen's anytime that I pass through. My Mom does as well. Their special order options for Thanksgiving and Christmastime are wonderful--we have ordered cakes and pies on a couple of separate occasions and never been disappointed.

Eileen's Bakery & Cafe is actually an 1833 colonial church. When you step in, you go through another set of double doors to the main area. The place offers breakfast, lunch, and a cake menu, as well as catering services. The bakery cases seemed like slim pickings, but I realized that some of their pastries were set on top of the counter - they had cookies, breads, as well as quiche. I tried their popular Bear Claw (which was pretty large in size, but it was actually tasty; the filling of of the cinnamon, brown sugar, and the nuts with the nice glaze on top was pretty good; I think it would have been super terrific if it was more fresh and warm); a ham and cheese croissant (this was filled with a good amount of cheese, strips of ham, and dijon mustard (which I wasn't really a fan of)); and, a blueberry scone with a glaze (at first, I thought it was an orange glaze, but it was just a regular icing; the scone was more like a muffin and moist, but it was not as blueberry-ish as I thought it would have been, and tasted more just like a bundt cake). I also tried one of their cold teas, the Sweet Southern Lime Tea (this wasn't as sweet as I expected and had a very subtle lime taste to it; it was refreshing, and served in a coffee cup (which I thought was kind of weird)). One of the employees that was helping us was very friendly and sweet, but when inquired about certain items, she didn't have the faintest clue on what they were and what was in them T___T (some of the cookies were labeled, but everything else, you just have to guess). There is plenty of seating within, but I noticed that it was just way too hot and humid in there - no ventilation, and it was just pretty uncomfortable. I'm glad I was able to check out Eileen's, but not sure if I'd go back. +Bear Claw (request them to be fresh and warm) +no labels on items in bakery case T___T +extremely hot & humid inside :O

In Dexys Midnight Runners' classic one-hit wonder "Come on Eileen", the song was inspired by a childhood friend with whom the lead singer had a romantic, and later sexual, relationship in his teens. His Catholic upbringing led to a fascination with the taboos surrounding sexuality. How the heck is this relevant you say? wait for it.... Eileen's Bakery and Cafe resides in what used to be a reformed Baptist church in the Historic District of downtown Fredericksburg with the main church area serving as the dining room and the Sunday school classrooms as the kitchen and bakery production areas. If loving Eileen's sinful selection of delectable baked goods and drinks is wrong, then I don't want to be right! For my first visit, I ordered an apple fritter paired with a vanilla latte. The apple fritter was served warm with a orange zest glaze and generous chunks of freshly spiced apples and the vanilla latte was made from a recipe the owner brought down from Seattle (a close second choice was a spicy Mexican hot chocolate). The counter is lined with several delectable hearty breakfast wraps filled with freshly scrambled eggs and cured meats and the English muffins are made fresh on the premises which is a welcome upgrade to the assembly line prepackaged components at [insert your favorite chain restaurant]. In terms of their pastries and cakes, rather than give you a rundown of their selection, all you need to know is that they are a local favorite for catering to weddings both offsite and even onsite (it is a church after all and there is a lovely garden patio when the weather is warmer) so that should give you a general idea of the level of quality and artistry that they place on their sweets. Lunch offers a deli-level variety of freshly baked breads, cheeses, and home-made soups highlighted by a curried chicken salad in the cold section and a panini-pressed Cubano in the hot section. Service was warm and inviting and with the high ceilings and ample dining space, it serves as a popular place for group gatherings and formal events. Much like the town of Fredericksburg, the selection of edible goodies and beverages reflect a link to the past with traditional favorites all made daily by hand before dawn as well as providing accommodations toward a changing world with creative flavor combinations and influences from abroad. Great, I've officially cursed myself with an endless accelerating loop of "too-ra-loo-ra, too-ra-loo-rye-aye" every time I step into Eileen's bakery as a result of typing this review. Why must you be so dang catchy?
(4)Lillie P.
Excellent baked goods and service with a smile. We like the california breakfast burrito and their daily quiche. One word of advice though... bundle up if you go on a cold day. It was freezing in there last time we went. They need to install more heaters.
(4)Meghan F.
This little place is amazing! Mom and I love to go here for breakfast haven't tried the lunch part yet. Portions are perfect. It's worth the extra couple of dollars. I try to go when ever I get a chance. The only thing that stinks sometimes is the parking but that's all of down town
(5)Susan H.
So...we were walking in downtown Fredericksburg and Eileen's Bakery & Cafe caught our eye. As we approached the entrance, two women were leaving. One said to the other "I knew they were coming in here!" I asked her "Is their stuff good?" "Oh, yes it is!" She answered. "Well" I said "I guess we made the right choice". The reply---"You sure did!" Upon entering, you first approach the case where the baked goods are kept. The assortment was eclectic---1 large coconut cupcake, a couple of small but attractive pies, some pie slices and what caught my husband's eye---German spice cake. The lady behind the counter was very friendly and patient as we made our selection. We bought 2 of the German spice cakes to go. Eileen's also sells pre-made sandwiches which they will bring to your table for you. They also have sodas and juices. Later that evening, when we were back home, we split one of the cakes, as they are small. When I opened the container they were in, I was immediately hit with the smell of cloves. Each cake also had a thin apple slice on top, which we both thought was superfluous. But that cake---OMG! It was delicious! Not too sweet, not too rich---just right. It was dense but moist with a light confectioner's glaze on top. In addition, it had that homemade look to it rather than a mass produced product where everything is perfect. This is a cake to be slowly savored. After finishing it, the taste of cloves just lingers in your mouth. The next night we ate the other one. My husband heated up his portion and told me that he thought heating it up brought out even more flavoring. It had me wishing that I had done so with my portion, too. Based on that cake alone, I was ready to give Eileen's 5 stars...but...considering it was the only thing we tried, I held back. Eventually (in the spring) we'll take another day trip to Fredericksburg and will definitely stop in at Eileen's to sample some more of their baked goods. Heck, we may even sit awhile and try a sandwich!
(4)Melissa N.
If you are watching your waistline or have no self control, then it's best that you skip Eileen's. You will have a difficult time deciding what decadent yummy to get, but get there first thing in the morning or else the selections will be sparse. Service is always with a smile, and during the warmer weather the back patio is so inviting that you won't want to leave.
(4)Mark H.
We went in to order a sandwich from the menu and they told us that "we're not doing that right now" so we ordered out of the display case. After which we noticed that they were making sandwiches for everyone else. When we asked later about it they told us that if their sandwich makers are busy they won't make sandwiches. They were unapologetic and rude about it. I'd find somewhere else to eat.

This is a nice bakery in a lovely old church. The food is a treat. Made fresh daily and well worth the money spent on it. It is a bit pricey, but it is also the real cost of the food. The cookies are to died for and seasonal treats are something that you do not want to miss. They have coffee, tea and coco, as well as waters. The severs are friendly and helpful. Do side the prices for all the case items are not always listed.

Eileen's provides really delicious drinks and baked goods in a lovely setting. It's a one-of-a-kind establishment in historic downtown Fredericksburg. Converting older buildings into businesses is nothing new, but how often is it that you can enjoy coffee and a freshly-baked muffin in what used to be an old church? We enjoyed the comfy sofa seating available, with a coffee table in the middle, where you can place your drinks and snacks or maybe lay out a board game or two. It's almost like being in someone's living room. They also have reading material for kiddos, nice touch. If this spot was closer to home, I'd probably organize a gift exchange for the holidays here since it's really spacious and charming. Some of their special latte mixes contain dairy; be sure to ask. Other drinks are customizable, and the substitute milk is soy. Overall, a great place to catch up with friends, unwind, and laze away on a Sunday morning or afternoon. I can see this place being really popular with families and groups after religious services. It's also a good spot for entertaining friends from out of town.

I don't like giving 1's but feel I need to on this occasion. I ordered a cake here over the phone for a special occasion. The young lady who helped me on the phone was so nice and kind, I couldn't say "no thanks" after being told the cake - a sheet cake - would be 65 dollars! I figured this thing has got to be "melt in your mouth gorgeous" - so what the heck, I'll pay. I told the girl when I ordered that I'd be in around 4 p.m. today to pick up. Running a little late, I arrived around at the bakery around 4:20 p.m. and the place was closed. I never received a phone call (thy had my number) asking if I was on my way, everything ok? we're closing soon, I wasn't told to be there by 4 p.m. when I ordered as the doors would be bolted shut at that time. After banging on the front door for awhile, the dishwasher from around the back of the building finally came out. He and another gentleman wanted me to wait in the alley until they figured things out - they told me no one told them I was coming. I asked if I could step inside, as I didn't feel comfortable standing out there waiting while they f'd around inside. When I finally saw the cake, I must say - the initial appearance did not "knock my socks off" as I thought it would. The decorations were just "ok." I got the cake to our event and was given an end piece when cake serving time finally came. Biting into it - (I couldn't cut it with a plastic knife) - the outer edges of the cake itself were hard as a rock - as if overlooked. The cake itself was dry, not moist. Nothing special here folks. Really. Not much customer care (ie you on your way sir? Closing soon....), presentation blah, flavor in this one - sub-par. I've honestly has 100 percent better taste, quality and appearance for 2/3rds less the price at Food Lion. I'll take my business elsewhere next time.

Eating in an old church was a very unique environment! We stopped here on our way back home to pick up some treats, and I'm so glad we did! I had a mushroom and cheese croissant which was very tasty. My only qualm was that I wish it was hot and not just taken from sitting out. I also got three raspberry cookie bars and three chocolate chip cookies to go, and trying them later that day: DELICIOUS. Perfect cookie consistency (chewy, but not hard or crumbly) and just the right amount of sweetness. We'll definitely be back whenever we revisit Fredericksburg!

Oh Mylanta, I love this place. Now, I haven't been here since I graduated in 2010, so things may have changed, but I was thinking about it this morning and wanted to write a review. One of my favorite breakfast items was the lemon twist (which sadly it doesn't look like they make anymore according to their website). The orange glazed shortbread and raspberry thumbprint cookies are awesome too. I got the most amazing loaf of ciabatta bread one time. It had slices of potatoes and onions baked in the top. I'm a bit ashamed to say that it would have served four people and I ate the entire thing on my own... They make different types every day, I only saw it that one time. I wish they would open a location in Richmond so I could get my yummy Eileen's fix again!
(5)Thomas B.
How can a bakery be out of butter croissants at 9:30 on a Sunday morning? What a disappointment....
(2)N M.
Do they still use a microwave to heat up food items? They create this amazing tasting food and totally ruin it by putting it in the microwave to heat and serve. It is really disappointing because I just know the "George's Mess" could be one of the best breakfast sandwiches ever, if only it wasn't heated in the microwave. I see a lot of complaints about service, but I would say that it adds to the character of the place (excluding rude servers, but I haven't had rude service here). The service is definitely slow, and often don't quite seem to know what is going on (always seem to be in training without anyone to ask exactly how its done), adds to the slowness, but overall friendly. Pastries are really good. This place would definitely be a four star if they tossed the microwave and then a 5 star if the people behind the counter were well trained and efficient, but I know that poor front counter is a result of poor management.

This is a wonderful lunch spot! We had the pleasure of visiting during restaurant week and it was wonderful! The cream brûlée cake was a great addition to an awesome sandwich. The staff was very welcoming and friendly even during the peak lunch hour. The kids meal included julienned apples and a custom sandwich. We will definitely visit again soon!!

Great atmosphere and delicious food. Would be 5 stars if the wraps were thrown into a panini press instead of a microwave. That being said, they have a curry chicken wrap with peanut butter that is unique and amazing. Love getting lunch here.

Cute location. Friendly staff. Amazing pumpkin pie!!! There wasn't a ton of selections, but I will come back another day at an earlier time.

This is one of my favorite "meeting" places for networking or small groups. Very cool, contemporary feel to this renovated church. The food is awesome and has a very unique and delicious assortment. The drinks have always come out perfect the staff is very friendly. Prices are great and so is the location. It's pretty easy to get in and out of downtown.

I'd heard about Eileen's Bakery from some family and friends so I decided to give them a try one day for lunch. I was surprised to find the actual location of the building. If you've read my book, A Series of Events, it was the exact place that I was almost kicked out of when I was a young adult. It was surreal to be back in there again. I got a small, half of a sandwich of ham and brie, a bag of chips and just to be a smart-ass, a bottle of root beer. I was a bit shocked when the bill was just over $13. It was nice to sit and enjoy the really good sandwich and afterwards, I went over towards to the bathroom to look out on the patio and see the side portion of the building that I'd become so familiar with years earlier. It was so reminiscent of a time that I struggled through and shared myself with so many. I left with a smile on my face and dropped a few business cards on the way out. Good food but a bit pricey for what you get.

The best thing about Eileen's is definitely the building itself. A renovated Baptist church, the facade of the bakery is sensationally cute, especially at this time of year when adorned with Christmas decor. I so wanted to open the heavy church doors and have the smell and sounds of Christmas wash over me. But alas, the inside was somewhat sterile and reminded me of a Church cafeteria :/ Le sigh. There's a beautiful stained glass window which should definitely be accentuated by equally lovely seating and decor, but the standard tables and chairs leave this piece in a league of it's own. It was close to closing when I arrived, so the selection of baked good wasn't as plentiful as peak hours. The selection of quiches, tarts, and pies was still notable and I occupied the staff member for about ten minutes with my indecision. Finally decided on a half vegetarian sandwich with a side of apple slaw, which ran me about $7. LUCKILY, whoever made my sandwich made a pho-pa as well, crafting a whole rather than a half, because the portions are tiny... And unfortunately, the taste didn't make up for it :( .. The veggies were standard Subway fare: lettuce, tomato, onion, etc., with nothing striking my taste palette. The apple and walnut slaw, however, was delicious and the portion size a perfect accompaniment to a sandwich. As of now, Eileen's leans to a 3.5. Although I wouldn't return for lunch, I would give a pastry and a coffee a go; especially during their "Espresso Happy Hour!" (see my tip below)

Clean, bright friendly place with lots of well-made local choices for sandwiches, salads, etc. Great pastries. Wonderful iced tea/ drink selection (not tons but well chosen).

We loved the food; French quality pastries that satisfied my European boyfriend and a delicious quiche for me. The only detractor was less that perfect customer service; we felt as if we were hurried through making our choices. A clean fork would have been nice.
(4)Kima N.
The Mexican spiced cocoa is out of this world. Their pastries are close to perfection and their other baked goods are wonderful. There is almost always a wait but it's worth it
(5)Pat C.
Recommend the coffee cake and lemon bar. The coffee and espresso selections were not that great in my opinion. I have tried the mocha latte, vanilla latte and plain latte. For some reason, its always on the light side (too watery). It's never rich or filling. The Panini's and sandwiches are a must try though! They are delicious.

Eileen's - ah-mazing! We held a bridesmaid's luncheon there today. Eileen herself was so helpful and the setting was exactly what we had envisioned. (BTW - we planned this luncheon from out of state so we made arrangements with Eileen - sight unseen). The event went off without a hitch. The sandwiches, salad and pastries were so yummy. And I especially recommend Eileen's own Apple Chai Iced Tea!

This place is great! I went here for the first time this past weekend and I got the three cheese spinach croissant and the honey pull apart bread. Both were very good. The people are friendly and the food selection is nice. If they were closer, I am sure that I would frequent this place more often. The only issue that I have with this place is that everything is premade. I am a pescetarian, so I can't eat any of the breakfast wraps due to sausage/bacon. This doesn't affect the quality of food, it just limits my options. At least there are non-meat options, which some places do not have.

I ordered 2 birthday cakes (Lemon Curd & Whipped Peanut Butter). They were beautifully decorated and OMG did they taste delicious! They were both moist and had so much flavor like a homemade cake should! I was pleasantly surprised :) Its difficult to find a bakery that not only delivers on a beautiful product but one that actually tastes good! And the affordable prices are a bonus:) Don't hesitate to get your bakery items here.... they obviously value only producing high quality products!
(5)Jennifer P.
Oh my goodness, sophisticated baked goods! For me, I hate the overly sweet baked goods that you normally find in Starbucks and the chain restaurants but here at Eileen's, I feel like I'm eating quality that's well balanced in sweetness. I had the upside down pineapple cupcake with a latte. The combination was perfect. Pineapple is pretty sweet on it's own but this cake was perfect with my latte. Price is right and the atmosphere is peaceful. Didn't try their sandwiches yet but I would definitely come back again for the baked goods! Mind you I lost my sweet tooth, but Eileen's has brought it back without making me feel guilty :)

Thank you Eileen's for your excellent staff and GREAT FOOD! We really enjoyed the lemon croissant and gazpacho! We are also very greatful for the kid-friendly atmosphere! Thank you!

I may be giving Eileen's a higher rating than really necessary but I can't help how much I love it. I'll start with the negative. The layout is a bit awkward. Somedays they have you order from the counter, other days you order at the register. When you go to leave to wait for your order, your options are to walk around crowded tables, or thru a crowded line. Though their desserts look amazing, I have yet to be happy with one. I've tried the lemon brownie bars, the pineapple cake, the pumpkin chocolate cupcake, the lemon curd twist, and they've all been disappointingly bland. I keep trying different ones, determined that I'll find one I love, but I think that's a bit hopeless. Now ignoring the desserts, Eileen's food is AMAZING. My husband almost always gets a different sandwich (he likes variety) and has loved them all. I always get the vegetarian (I like routine) and it's my favorite. Their sides have always impressed us and their bakery items? Oh man, don't even get me started on the Sticky Bun. That messy thing is heaven Something odd and slightly frustrating though is that ever since they started featuring their fall sandwiches, they no longer display the vegetarian sandwich. I can ask to have it made, but sometimes the sandwich maker has gone home for the day. We've gone before at around 3:30 and the maker was already gone. I settled for a salad and some soup but was pretty disappointed (I like routine!). I don't know why they aren't advertising their vegetarian sandwich, and I always feel like a burden asking them to make me one. Honestly, Eileen's could make dirt sandwiches and I'd still probably be singing their praises. I love their low prices, unique combinations, amazing quality, and the fact that they take risks and try new things. Plus living right down the street from them is awesome. Elieen's is my go-to restaurant, and I do recommend giving them a try.

One of the first times I came here I ordered an absolutely fabulous sandwich and I have been trying to get it ever since. It was some sort of combination of vegetables and a very flavorful mayo. No one at Eileen's has been able to identify what sandwich it was in the many times I've been back since. The menu changes often which is great for variety, but bad if you have a favorite sandwich! The coffee here is excellent. The pastries and breads are similarly delicious and clearly made with love and care. However, I feel that the sandwiches are hit or miss. I have had some very delicious and satisfying sandwiches and some that were disappointing. The only other thing that perturbs me about this place is how slow the line moves. I can't figure it out but even if there are only five people ahead of you in line, it could take 10 minutes to get to the front. It doesn't make sense. Otherwise, the building is absolutely beautiful. It is housed in an old church that is airy and bright. Get your food to stay and chill here all afternoon.

Eileen's is one those hidden gems in Fredericksburg, that really should be better known. The menu here is always original and constantly changing, but it features sandwiches, sides and deserts, made from great ingredients and in unusual and flavorful combinations. Its moderately priced; its more expensive than Panera and the portions are a similar size, but the food is much better at Eileen's. I love that this is inside of an old church, the high ceilings and lots of natural light add a special charm to this place. The staff is always friendly and willing to discuss the menu, but it can get a little crowded at certain times, so grab a table before you get in line to order.

another stop I made while visiting F-Burg. I had the coconut, raspberry filled cupcake..amazing..not too sweet, whipped cream frosting with just enough coconut. I wish they mailed to Florida, I would order a dozen. The building is an old Baptist church with has a lot of charm to it, staff was very nice. It was near closing but they did not seemed bother by our arrival.

I love this bakery! Ever since I first discovered it over a year ago I have loved everything I've tried, my favorite thing is the french honey baton. And the blueberry coffee cake it also one of my favorites. Their breakfast sandwiches are also great. The service used to be really rough, but I will say lately they have made a huge turn around and we've had awesome service. I highly recommend Eileen's!

This is a gem in Fred. The sandwiches and baked goods are to drool over. It's airy, sunny, comfortable and affordable. Will go back again and again.

ordered: salami sandwich curry chicken sandwich bacon club (turkey? i think) sandwich cookies: chocolate chip, raspberry shortbread bar, maple shortbread price of the sandwiches are a bit high for the size. thick cuts of salami, slices of cheese, veggies: red onion, tomato & lettuce on a baguette type bread. this was tasty thanks to the thick slices of salami and decent spread of aioli. curry chicken was nicely flavored, golden raisins added a nice sweetness to the savory. bacon club sandwich was good. served on sandwich style wheat bread. husband liked it. sorry, no picture, he got to it before i could get a picture. the only cookie that really stood out among all three was the raspberry shortbread bar. it had a wonderful tart raspberry flavor, and the drizzle of icing was a nice amount of sweetness that it didn't take away from the tartness. other two cookies were so-so, nothing special or to be remembered. the service was a bit odd. all the girls were serving in a timely manner, but they seemed lethargic or emotionless. like they were going through the motions of taking & plating orders -- no smiles or enthusiasm. it was a bit standoffish. the flow of ordering and paying is weird. it was odd to take your order at the display area, go down the L shaped counter line to pay at the register, then all the way to the original start point (after walking through the seating area) to pick up your order. the building is great, an old church turned restaurant, great original stained glass, nice modern technology, church pew in the back room, a bit of original brick work showing through the plaster inside.

Has a nice selection of sandwiches and pastries. Really neat building.

Was visiting from out of town and had a free day; thought I'd pop in for a nice cafe experience. I ordered a double espresso with whipped cream. The barista grabbed a 16 ounce cup (red flag #1) and walked toward the espresso machine, then doubled back to tell me "I don't think we have whipped cream." I stared at her for a moment, then looked at the menu to double check that I was in a coffee shop that serves mochas and flavored lattes and hot chocolates and the normal drinks that come with whipped cream. I looked back at her and asked her to clarify. "We don't have whipped cream. We have heavy cream and half and half, do you want that?" I kept staring, so she went to the back to ask the manager. Alas, it was a fact. Holding the 16 ounce cup she asked if I still wanted my drink (red flag #2). I then asked for an americano, my usual go-to in new places. What I got was a hot cup of what tastes like the coffee I used to sneak at summer camp that was meant for the counselors. I can't even finish it. Coffee flavored hot water.

The turkey is freshly baked, but it tastes REALLY weird. And I've tried it more than once, as have my husband and a friend. The service is just horrible. They've gotten my orders wrong every single time we've gone. They run out of sweet tea early and refuse to make more. When you order, instead of handing you the paper to circle your own choices, they keep hold of it like it's a piece of gold and it takes forever to order.

We had sent an email to Eileen's about the following (along with other feedback). It has been more than a week and we've yet to receive a reply. Hubby and I come here often, typically once a week for a lunch date. We've always been happy with their food for the past couple of years. I typically don't care much for service when the food is good even when the person behind the counter is emotionless. But I am sad to say that lately the service has been disgusting, just disgusting. This was the last straw: We came around 11:10am and they only had a few sandwiches out on display. Typically the sandwiches are all on display at 11am. I ask the lady who was taking our order if there are any more sandwiches coming out because the ones on display were not as appealing to me. She immediately said with a short temper, "The salami." So I ask, "Is that available in a half sandwich?" I had wanted to get a half sandwich with a side. And did you know what she said? She said with her still short temper, "I don't know!" I was appalled and just stared at her in silence out of shock. A good 10 seconds went by and she said to me without looking me in the eye, "....but.... I..... will....... go......check." Yeah you better go check. I'm sorry that I am such an inconvenience and that you have better things to do than serve on a customer at your damn job??!!!! There was only ONE person behind us in line so it's not like I was keeping the line up and nor was I being a nasty, difficult customer. There is some vemon spreading upon their staff attitudes, and I really hope that this lady (along with all the other bad ones) get fired and replaced by some young college aged females. Because we have always noticed in the past that it was young college aged females who were very competent and orderly workers. I mean, these workers don't even wait tables and we have the briefest interaction while ordering our food. Lady, you can't even fake it for those 2 minutes you have to talk to a customer??? You can tell who are the management and who are the lazy ass workers who have an attitude problem. The management will greet you nicely and go check for sandwiches in the back without any hesitation. You don't even have to ask! It's too bad that it's usually those with an attitude problem that are there taking our orders. Eileen's.....your food lures us but your staff makes us vomit your food out in disgust. We're going elsewhere for our weekly lunch dates until you get your act together! P.S. Before we left, we noticed the salami sandwich WAS indeed available in half.

Found this great bakery thanks to Yelp! I was there early on a Friday morning and there was not yet a huge selection. The cafe is big, bright, and airy. The two choices I made were: raspberry strudel and strawberry shortcake. The raspberry strudel was delicious, and huge - I could not eat the whole thing. The strawberry shortcake was eaten the next day, and while good, part of the cake was dry, part was not. It was as if they had only soaked half of the cake, which was odd. Staff was very friendly. It is worth noting that while they have coffee, they do not have espresso, lattes, etc.

This place is advertised as having WIFI on some sites (like Yelp) but they do not have Wifi. Apparently they did at one point but claim that the cash register and other restaurant technology interfered. Riiiiiight. Other restaurants manage it. This is disappointing, the food is pretty good and recently their employees have been MUCH nicer than they were a few years ago and the atmosphere makes me want to bring my computer and get some work done. But this is exactly the type of hovering about that the restaurant probably doesn't want and so doesn't have internet. : ( I love their sides and would love to buy a recipe book. I LOVE their outdoor area in the spring and summer. I LOVE when they have restaurant week. I LOVE the Cosco gift cards - two $25 gift cards for $40.

I was in town for the Marine Corp Historic Half and we yelped this place and decided to try it. Excellent atmosphere and pastries. My only complaint was it took a long time for the server to bring us our coffee. The staff was very polite and I really enjoyed the feel of the place.

The cookies here are good, and I don't mind picking up a couple to go. However, the rest of this place is a different story. The folks who work the counter at Eileen's are very nice, but they seem to have trouble coordinating with each other. Even when I order a simple pastry from the cabinet that does not need heating, it seems to take them 15 minutes to get it from the order taker to the cash register. I gave up ordering anything more complex a long time ago because the chances of waiting 30 minutes for a sandwich or getting the wrong food was just too high. To top it off, even though this cafe offers espresso drinks and coffee, the staff don't seem to know how to actually brew some of these so the quality tends to be uneven. Still, the atmosphere in Eileen's is really nice and if you're just grabbing a few cookies or a dessert to go, it's a fine place to stop. I just wouldn't make it a meal destination.
(2)Brian K.
I had the California breakfast wrap and the breakfast wrap with potatoes and cream cheese - both were outstanding. I love the fact that this cute little bakery occupies and old church. The pastries looked great and I will have to try the carrot cake next time. Yummy!

My boyfriend and I stopped here on our way back to Northern VA after a weekend trip. Atmosphere: Eileen's is in what used to be a church. It was almost strange to walk into the vestibule but then pass through doors and see a deli beyond. Very clean, bright, comfortable. Service: A little strange. I almost wasn't sure if all the employees were communicating with one another. No one behind the counter seemed to have a specific function, and while we got our sandwiches ordered easily, it was difficult for me to get a dessert. I waited by the counter for a minute, even made eye contact with an employee but wasn't offered help. I ended up ordering it from the cashier, but then had to ask her to get it for me. It was kind of weird. Food: Delish! I had an egg salad sandwich that was awesome. The bread was very good. I wonder if they make it there? I also had an apricot jam bar for dessert and I wish I had bought several others to take home! I'll definitely go back to Eileen's if I find myself in Fredericksburg again.
(4)J S.
This is my go to place for taking out of town guests for lunch. Best to go mid-week (closed on Monday's and Friday's are crowded). My family also enjoys going late Sunday morning and grabbing a coffee and pastry.
(4)Jen P.
Fredericksburg Jewel!!! Love this place. The food is always changing and the staff is very helpful. There is even a secluded patio, around back, where you can bring your dog and relax. Awesome place to go on a lazy Saturday for breakfast or lunch.
(5)Eric M.
Some confusion at the counter. Most of the food was not as tasty as it looked... with one exception, the delicious raspberry cream pastry.
(3)P. Shawn F.
Good, but a tad expensive (for what you get). Sandwiches are ~$8. You can make it a combo (add a side or chips for $1 more --does not include a drink). The line is usually pretty long and a tad unorganized from an ordering perspective. Food was very good. Pastries look great.
(4)Pennie R.
I just love this place. We've never had anything less than wonderful here over all the years we've been going there. The bread is to die for!!
(5)Danny P.
Had coffee and Danish. It was very good. Very relaxing, great atmosphere. Will definitely come back for lunch.
(4)Michael M.
Eileen's is OK. Nothing outstanding. Did not try pastries.
(3)Alien F.
OK, so I returned and was very happy to see they hired a great young woman who services the front. She is kind, always smiling and very sweet. But the service still is really bad. This place has no idea how to get customers their food in a timely manner. It is so poorly managed that if there is a line of two people, you might as well walk out because you will be waiting 15 minutes before anyone even asks you what to order. It's truly a disaster and Eileen cannot figure out how to get it right. She got rid off all of the useless employees who were rude, and she hired some great young people to handle the front, but the place is clueless on how to get people their orders fast enough. Most people have 30 minutes for lunch and its unacceptable to have to wait 15 to get an order in. Everything is already freaking made right in front of your eyes. Nothing is made to order. So, it is absolutely unacceptable for people to have to wait this long to get their orders in---UNACCEPTABLE. I could see if orders were made on the go, but everything is premade. I go to FOODE more than Eileens now, but I will stop in there when I know it will be slow because she does make tasty pastries. I really wish Eileen would make some healthier pastry options and some gluten free products. One can only take so much butter and cream in their system.
(3)Jacqueline D.
I have to bump Eileen's up a star since they switched to glass cups for water (yay) and they finally started having iced coffee (I can't be the only one in Fredericksburg that enjoys an iced red eye, am I?). I have still been avoiding their busy times like the plague due to my crazy desire to not stand in line for an hour without apparent reason, however, I might be up to trying it again soon...
(3)Carly M.
Eileen's has the best baked goods and sandwiches in town. I've been coming here for breakfast for years, first on my way up to DC and now more often since I work closer to Fredericksburg now. The cafe is located in a renovated church, with great ambiance. They are constantly changing the ordering process and the way the lines work, so keep on your toes. Pastries, sandwiches and side salads are pre-made, but you can custom order a sandwich if you want. They typically offer breakfast sandwiches and wraps and then different ones for lunch. Breakfast faves: Austrian Kruler, Pecan Roundabout, Bacon Egg and Cheese sandwich, Chorizo Wrap. They used to offer a delicious corned beef hash breakfast sandwich, but I have not seen that offered recently. Lunch faves: Chicken salad (curried if they have it), or the apple and cheese sandwich (not sure if it has a fancy name) The problem I have is with the counter service. Like I said, the change their line system frequently, sometimes having people take a number and sometimes having two lines (one for food and one for drinks), or other variations. This is confusing, but the slow service behind the counter is the biggest problem. Often I will be stopping by for breakfast to take to work (carryout) and I have to wait up to 15 minutes with just one person in front of me. All I need is a pre-made sandwich put into a bag and then to go to the other employee at the register and pay. But 9 times out of 10 the process takes way too long. It seems like there are always several employees working and one dedicated to the register, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Maybe it's just a southern laid back style. It hasn't stopped me from coming back several times a month, but I would be there more often if I knew I could get my order faster. This is an awesome place with great food, that deserves better counter staff. Also, if you plan to go for breakfast, don't get there too late because they don't replenish the food offerings and they are running pretty low by 11 or so, even on the weekends.
(4)Chris J.
What I love about Eileen's is its uniqueness. Every time I visit there are new and interesting foods available. They also have amazing pastries and the environment alone is great for meetings, a lunch date or just enjoying a good book over lunch.
(5)David R.
Outstanding sandwiches and baked goods. Lovely space, especially the patio. The counter can definitely be chaotic
(4)Michael W.
Great place to get a bite to eat. The people working here are always friendly and smiling. The pastries are delicious. They always have something different to try every time we come in.
(5)Shannon Y.
I met up with a friend for breakfast here amd it was wonderful! The food selection is in a display case and you choose what you want. I tried the eggs benedict and I am glad that I did. The hollandaise sauce was great and the egg was just the way I like them. Their iced tea was really good too. I plan on eating here again in the near future.
