They must have had a rocky start in the beginning because earlier reviews in no way reflect what we experienced. Our entire dinner was excellent. No wait time, server was friendly and informative, not a long wait for our food, food temperature was good, tasted delicious, gorgeous interior. We had the Lasagna, Pollo Isabella, Tuscan Risoto and Gouda and Pancetta Mac and Cheese.

Well, this was a mistake. The waiter was great....very nice and attentive. However, it felt very rushed--extremely rushed--even though the restaurant was less than 25% full when we left at about 6:45. The food was not horrible but it was a but plastic--not tasting like fresh Italian. The "Italian Nachos" were tasty. We had drinks, appetizers, salads and entres. Where is the bread? At the end of the meal, I asked the server why an Italian restaurant didn't serve bread. He looked embarrassed and said, "you have to ask for it. I'm sorry." So, I have to say that this is not a real Italian restaurant. No Italian restaurant would fail to serve bread...they'd think there is something wrong with a person who didn't eat it. It's a plastic, fast-food place for people who are shopping at the shopping center....The food is mediocre at best and they just want to "get'em in and get'em out" to make as much money as possible.

I was tentative to try this place out after reading the earlier reviews, but they must have worked out their kinks because I had a great experience. The service was excellent, the food was delicious and timely, and the atmosphere was perfect. Definitely try the Italian nachos!

This just didn't quite live up to the praise I've heard. It's def not a quick in and out - the food is not over the top fab - the service is a bit slow (the kitchen? The waiter? Who knows) but our waiter was great and I can't give him heat due to the fault of the kitchen. He was very informative of the menu. On top of refills and our needs. 2.5hrs for our party of 5 was a bit long even though we enjoyed the time to chat. We did get apps, salads, entree, dessert & coffee. I got Salmon and it was doused in a lemon wine sauce - I asked for it cooked well and it was cooked to done, but not as well as i like it - It tasted a touch fishy - but the sauce covered it well - Salmon shouldn't taste fishy - I should have KNOWN! I also got the Tiramisu - mistake. It was literally a heaping pile of what tasted like out of the can whip cream with a dusting of shaved tastless chocolate and 3 lady fingers - I've had better from the grocery store prepared section. My husbands dish came out first - Seared Tuna - 15 mins later the rest of the table's entrees arrived. The table got desserts and the custard and fruit was along with the creme brulee was awesome. Top top things off for my experience, I got very ill about about 40mins after eating. Everyone else in our party enjoyed their food and thought it was prepared well. IF I go back I know to stick to the basics, ask for sauces on the side and enjoy the vino. If I'm looking for high quality Italian I'm heading over to another local hot spot.

My husband and I went to Travinia during their first week. The wait staff was excellent, very friendly and attentive. The restaurant itself if beautifully decorated and very cozy. We both ordered Pasta Fagiioli that was kickin' good. The other soup that night was Italian Clam Chowder. Noticed other tables sopping up the remains with the "out of this world bread". We are simple eaters (no big foodies in our house). We ordered Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and the Tuscan Roasted chicken. We ate off each others plates. The roasted chicken was tender and very tasty. This restaurant will be on our list of regulars.

Food was terrible! Dry mussels in about a tablespoon of sauce, overly sweetened Marsala, over-cooked pasta, and dry cake for dessert. We also waited 40 minutes for a table for four because they only take reservations for parties of six or more! Will never go back. Vivace so much better.

I was very disappointed in this new Italian restaurant. To me it's a half step above the quality of food you can get at an Olive Garden and 4 times the price. After waiting 40 minutes for our food they came out and had to take our order over again due to a computer problem with the ticket ? The food is not authentic Italian. I'll stick to the smaller locally owned Italian restaurants Downtown.

Wow. . Completely unimpressed. Food was of airplane quality and the service was as slow as I could imagine. With a part of 8, dinner was 2.5 hours including a 30 minute wait for drinks. Ugh. The decor is fine, feels a bit pre-fab but fine for business or social settings. Nothing unique or with a wow factor. The menu is extensive but feels a lot like fast food italian rather than having some character. I can see potential but this place has a long way to go.

Great food and atmosphere. Location is great next to theater. Can't wait to go again and again.

The food was horrible. Came for late lunch and ordered carbonara with prosciutto. It came out slathered with a 70% butter 30% alfredo mix. About the same quality of pasta you'd get at the College Inn. You'd be much better off eating Trader Joe's fare or venturing downtown to Bella's, Vivace, or Tavola.

Nothing special about this place. Ordered chicken Marsala, it's was fried chicken with mushroom gravy on it. The salad was drowned with dressing not good! It's sad it a nice resturant but you don't eat nice you eat the food and really bad. You wants good Italian go to TIP TOP resturant on pan tops mnt, better food and reasonably priced. Come on fellows get it together before you go under!!'

Half price martini night was fun. The calamari was very good and the marinara sauce was particularly good. Martini night does bring out the loud drunks though. Beware. I would definitely suggest against sitting near the bar. The decor is a little like a cheap chain diner, but give it a chance since it's so new.

This restaurant is not what it used to be. Seems to be a lot of turnover as each time I return there are new faces. The service and food has gotten progressively worse. Yesterday was my final time giving them a chance. Happy Hour was not happy hour. We asked what the happy hour drink and food menus were and were told $1 off of house wine/glass and no happy hour food menu.... so we ordered off the dinner menu a pizza and nachos - terrible. They must have been low on the cheese, tomatoes, meat, etc. in the kitchen as we had to pour oil/pepper onto plate to dip into for pizza as it was simply baked bread; both items were subpar. Our waitress never returned to check on us. We had to request utensils, plates, and napkins from the food runner. And this was NOT during a busy time - there were maybe five tables inside and we were the only table outside at 5 p.m. I work too hard for my money to waste it at Travinia - I have not yet been disappointed in Burtons, so I will return there.

Great lunch option in Stonefield. I enjoyed the ravioli I had. Nice sauce and big plump ravioli cooked perfectly!

Since this restaurant opened last year, I have eaten lunch here at least once a month and have watched the food quality go steadily downhill. Last week was my worst and final lunch. Always, I've ordered the crabcake travinia. Early on it was delicious--fresh lump crab with very little filler. What I was served this last time was a frozen, breaded patty of stringy claw meat. My first two bites were cold, I stuck my finger in the middle and it was still frozen. I flagged down our server and told him it was cold. He said, "How did that happen?" I said, " I don't know but I really can't eat it like this" so he took it back and returned saying "they" were fixing me another one. Several minutes later, he brought back a replacement that was steaming hot, so hot in fact, I burned my mouth trying to eat it. The side of Orzo w/spinach and sundried tomatoes was also too hot. Clearly, once the crabcake was cooked, the whole dish was microwaved to insure a burning hot temperature. I felt as if the chefs decided to really stick it to me. Once the crabcake cooled down enough to eat, it was tough and chewy, way overcooked. I ate two bites then gave up. The server never came back to check if everything was okay, I suspect he knew full well what was going to happen. By this time, my friend had finished her lunch which she reported was fine and there was no point to me trying to order something else. My lunch that day was the bread for the table. My friend warned me not to engage with the manager because the one time she did, the manager got the chef who came out and gave her a hard time. I'm not sure why she continues to go back. Service has always been slow and with an attitude but I tolerated it because I enjoyed the crabcake. There is no reason now to go back unless I just want to give my money away and I've already done that.

Pretty inside and outside. That gets you the one star. The food is awful. I Had chicken Marsala. A piece of nuked chicken with a canned tasting mushroom sauce and a blob of dry pasta. Yes, dry. Even the waitress said "yea, I know, but that's how we serve it. As someone else posted, Their food looks and tastes like airline food. I have to agree. We need a Carraba's here for some good Italian. Until then, go to Bella's or Vivace's. Don't waste your money here.

Lovely setting but absolutely terrible food. We were a party of six. It was not crowded, but it still took way too long to serve. Mine went back because it was barely warm. The eggplant was too tough to cut with a fork. Two people had pizza which had totally soggy crust and wasn't hot. Mozzarella was like rubber. I will never go back.

Just ate there this evening after taking in a movie next door. Didn't quite know what to expect as I hadn't seen any reviews and it was convenient for where we were. We were very pleasantly surprised. The staff was very welcoming, seated us right away and we were blown away by the variety on the menu. Our waitress (I truly wish I could mention her name if I had known it) was wonderful. She was friendly and knowledgeable and made recommendations without pushing too hard or in a wishy washy manor. My son had the chicken Parmesan and as a chicken parm aficionado, he was in heaven. I had the spicy sausage and shrimp over risotto, and while a bit too soupy, it had great flavor and was incredibly filling. Our dinner companions had veal piccata and eggplant Parmesan. All superb. The salads that accompanied the entrees were HUGE and fresh...really, really lovely. The wine selection was excellent and the portions generous. What we also loved was the atmosphere. Smart, chic, but also warm and inviting. Really, really pleasant. I immediately booked a table for 12(which I have a feeling will be increased) for UVA parents weekend. We'll look forward to coming back, for sure. Don't pass this gem up. We're from the NY area and know good Italian. How delightful to find it at our son's new college town.

I do realize this is a "new" restaurant.. And I do realize that with all "new" restaurants there are hiccups and kinks here and there.. BUT this is a chain and with it comes standards for food prep, service, etc. I am not sure where the staff at Travinia was during the training phase of opening but it would appear they were either not present or didn't pay attention. Cases in point.. Food is bland and presentations lifeless.. Eggplant Parmesan was institutional at best.. The "marinara" atop the pasta was nothing more than chopped tomatoes. Take that same pathetic sauce, heat it in a pan and throw a few shards of dried pot roast in it and call it "Beef Rib Bolognese." Ah, no.!! Bread was slathered in olive oil and garlic; calamari appetizer with peppers was spicy but the breading fell off the calamari. Ended up with piles of fried batter and little calamari. Service was terrible. Interested in taking the order; interested in getting it to the table but then forget it.. Disappearing.. Wine list is not great.. We had four glasses of wine for the table.. Charged us the per-glass price when a bottle was less expensive. Most places I've been would have take the $2 hit and given us the bottle price. Again, this is a service issue.. That $2 might have insured a repeat visit. Finished eating and the dishes sat on the table while numerous servers and bus staff walked by.. Nobody bothered to pick up the dishes.. Check comes out.. No offer of desert, coffee, nothing..!!! Again, service and attention to the customer.. Oh and I must mention the flies. Yes, flies.!!! While struggling to find anything good in the meal I was also forced to continually swat at and shoo away flies from our table and food.. Flies in the restaurant means flies in the kitchen and that means a bit of a health issue with food prep. Charlottesville needs good, reliable restaurants and I do hope Travinia makes it past the opening hiccups.. If not it will be just another pathetic dining spot..

My Fiancé and I have been here twice. Once we had a glass of wine at the bar while waiting for a to go order and last night we got another to go order and wine from trader joes (makes date night a little more affordable). The food has been delicious every time. I will definitely return here!

We came here for dinner on a Saturday evening and had an excellent experience. Our server, Trae, was fantastic and took great care of us. I was a bit indecisive and had a few questions regarding the menu, and I really appreciated his genuine and honest recommendations. After much deliberation, I ordered the Pine Nut Encrusted Salmon and was very happy with my decision. My dish was delicious! The salmon was cooked perfectly and had a nice, crispy exterior. I also loved the lemon-basil beurre blanc sauce. Since we had checked in on Yelp, we took advantage of the check in offer and received a complimentary order of the Italian Nachos appetizer, which was very addictive and tasty. I was surprised by how big the portion was - we could only finish half of it! We requested for the asiago cream sauce to be served on the side, and enjoyed dipping our chips into the yummy cheese. The lightly fried chips were actually deep fried wonton skins. They were very crispy and it was hard to stop eating them! Thanks Yelp for the free appetizer! :) Finally, as it was my birthday, we also got a dessert on the house! We chose the Chocolate Decadence Cake, which was a nice way to end our meal. The rich chocolate cake was ginormous and definitely very decadent. I highly recommend Travinia for its great food, service, and ambiance!

Came here for lunch. Service was much much better than my previous review. The waiter was friendly, gave us bread and specials and very attentive. Starters: my parents typically don't eat nachos but they love the Italian Nachos. Freshly fried crunchy chips w cheese, tomatoes, beef, black olives and banana peppers (?). I felt healthy eating nachos, for once. Entree: The braised pork pappardelle was very flavorful. The pork was almost too much but the noodles were incredibly satisfying. The noodles almost taste like Vietnamese banh pho stir fry. My mom had the Shrimp Messina which was delicious but the portion was very tiny and barely just enough for lunch. The angel hair had a nice creamy sauce on it but it was paired with 5 little shrimps. Overall, everything I have tasted here has been delicious with only minor complaints (i.e. Portion size).

Came here for a quick bite after a movie and ordered a a few apps and a side. We had the Italian Farm Chopped Salad, Crispy Calamari, and Charred Corn Risotto. The Italian Farm Chopped Salad was fresh, full of sherry vinaigrette, and ample amounts of Roma tomatoes, cucumber, and other vegetables. The Crispy Calamari was the usual fanfare which was good but not exactly outstanding. The Charred Corn Risotto was a nice neutral side dish that I imagine would pair nicely with a meat. The complimentary warm house bread with slivers of bacon was fantastic. I really liked the decor of this place and our server was quite nice. This would be a good place for a group as they have a private room in the back. I will be back to try more of their dishes!

Travinia had a wide selection of food but was surprisingly lacking in vegetarian options, especially for an Italian restaurant. I got the zucchine fritte, artichoke-pesto risotto, and garlic parmesan fries. The risotto was very good and flavorful but oily. You could see the extra oil seeping out of the risotto. Although technically one of their side dishes, the portion was just enough to be filling but not overly so. The zucchini was very oily and had no taste in the breading but the lemon aioli was great. The garlic Parmesan fries also lacked flavor. My friend and I both had them and neither of us could taste any garlic. The fries even lacked basic salt. I had to ask for side of ranch to make them edible. My friend got the pasta mia nona and enjoyed it although it was fairly small for a main dish. It was only slightly larger than my risotto which was a side dish. The food was mediocre but service was terrible. Our waiter was not at all welcoming. He did not tell us about any specials or about happy hour which we knew was still going on when we arrived. When asked for extra sauce, he took forever to bring it to us. He did not come back after serving us to check in and we had to flag him down if we wanted anything. It took him more than ten minutes to bring us to-go boxes. I was ready to blame it on the waiter's lack of interest but an older couple sat beside us and he served them wonderfully and was very enthusiastic. I understand not serving drink menus to us because we look young but not even explaining the menu or checking back in was pretty rude. We also noticed other tables were brought bread which we were not told about or served. I even looked for it on the menu to see if it was a side for an entree or something. After reading other reviews I see that you have to ask for bread. But how would we know to ask for bread if this was our first time at Travinia? Seems ridiculous. Overall this restaurant is very overpriced for the quantity and quality of the food and service.

We love Travinia! Even though it is a small chain it feels like a local Charlottesville hang out. Lunch prices are great, which is when we usually go on the weekends. Friday and Saturday nights are really busy. They don't have a standard kid's menu but my daughter (who is 4) loves their spaghetti with olive oil and pancetta. The managers always stop by to check in and we have never been disappointed with our food choices

After a slow-ish start in a new shopping center in Charlottesville, this place has really hit its stride. I'm a major Italian food snob, so there's that. But I've always been pleasantly surprised by how well-plated the food is, and the service has been stellar. Getting down to the nitty gritty: their salads are usually wonderful, not over-dressed. being the creature of habit that I am, I always get the chicken piccata, which comes with a beautiful sauce and is usually too much for me to eat in one sitting (hi, leftovers). the one thing I'll say about this dish, though, is that they can tend to soft-cook the chicken, and it can be under-done. you might ask them to cook it well for you when you're putting your order in. Also, this restaurant is super-smart because they ALWAYS have a Yelp-y deal where you can get a free plate of done-up nachos. Which is amazing because I hate Mexican food, but this shizzle is off-the-rails amazing. So... pop open that app and take advantage of that coupon. you'll thank me later. For a town the size of Charlottesville, I'd imagine it's a bit difficult to build a reliable staff, but they've done it here. most of them are cute as buttons, too. The dining room is quite striking as well, so you'll be in nice confines as you chow down on some yummy grub. Highly recommended!

My mother and I went for lunch here and a few drinks. The food was fantastic, the drinks were great and we had a server by the name of Trey. He was phenomenal, checking up on us regularly without bugging us. He was very friendly, very knowledgable about everything we had asked for, and he made it a better experience overall. Thanks Trey! Also, the atmosphere was great! On a warm spring day where most people seemed moody, everyone at The restaurant was smiling and having a good time. Everything was well kept, nothing was dirty! Thanks both to our server Trey and the restaurant for making this a very pleasurable experience. We will be returning!

I'm visiting for the week from LA and this is a new place for me since I was here last. Between our group we tried the Italian Nachos, Gouda Mac and cheese, farm salad, spinach and goat cheese salad, scallop appetizer, Asparagus side, and corn side. The atmosphere was really nice, the service was pleasant. The bar was a bit slow. I was a bit disappointed that the scallop app only came with 2 scallops, and they weren't exceptionally large or anything. Every other scallop app I've ever had came with at least 3. They were perfectly cooked though and over all it was a very tasty dish. No the salads were delicious. The Mac and cheese was amazing with pancetta. My toddler cleared the plate with us happy to help. There was a bit of a fly problem both in the kitchen and in the dining room. I was sitting right by the kitchen and got a lovely view of them crawling all over the glass window. I also had to swat at them a few times. Also, they don't take reservations for parties under 6. I personally hate that policy. All in all, it was enjoyable and I would go back if invited by friends.

I have mixed feelings about our last visit to Travinia. Went on a Friday night at 7pm and we were seated immediately. Got sat in the very back room at the back table smushed between two other tables. The table was whoa wobbly to the point that I asked if we could sit elsewhere or if they had something to stick under it to keep it steady. Waitress checked some other tables and they were equally as wobbly. Started out with the Baked Burrata Rosa. When you hear burrata you think CHEESE. Well.... this was a dish of marinara (good marinara) with three of the smallest dollops of cheese that was more along the lines of ricotta. It came with 6 small pieces of crostini. We then got Caesar salads which had next to no dressing on them. Essentially a plate of dry romaine hearts, a bit of cheese, and some great croutons. Moving on to the entree, my fiance got the Sausage and Pepper Rustica which was listed on the menu as: Italian sausage, roasted peppers, red onions, oregano, basil, cavatappi, spicy marinara, provolone. What he got was a metal dish with some cavatappi pasta in regular marinara, a few roasted red peppers out of a jar, and about 5 slices of italian sausage. I had the shrimp and clam vittoria. My meal was good, but for heavens sake, if youre going to serve clams in the shell, serve them with not only a way to get them out but also a plate to put the empty shells on. The shrimp was cooked decently and the broth on the plate was delicious. I saw with my entree for several minutes due to lack of silverware to eat with and the inability to find our server. The food runner had no clue who's dish was who's. I had to get up and go find salt and pepper because our table didn't have it. Our server came to our table with dirty dishes in her hand from another table. Really? Our tab was over $100 for two people and we ended up going and getting dessert afterwards elsewhere because we were still hungry.

I've come here twice so far and both times left full and happy! The restaurant is large but feels cozy and classy! I've always had great service when I have come in for dinner. Now for the food and drinks: they have a decent selection of beers on taps, a great cocktail list, and an assortment of wine. I don't know if they have happy hour, but if they do, I will definitely come by! I'm a huge fan of their salad with grapes, blue cheese, and port wine dressing. Honestly, I crave it almost every day and can't wait to come back for more. As far as pastas go, I'm partial to red sauces and my boyfriend is partial to white sauces. Both times, the red sauces have impressed me! I highly recommend the short rib pasta. I can't remember what my boyfriend got the first time that we stopped by (a chicken with white sauce), but the second time, he got a similar dish with a white sauce that contained grand mariner. I was not impressed because it was too sweet. Overall, Travinia was a great restaurant and I hope to stop by again soon.

I have been to Travinia several times and always have a good experience. This time involved a birthday celebration with 10 friends. I arranged the reservation several days before to ensure seating. Our table was ready promptly as arranged, the service was awesome and the food was delicious. I always enjoy coming to Travinia and will continue to do so.

The resturants is located by the cinema, so before going to the movies I stopped in for a quick lunch. I had wanted to go the night before but when I drove by it was extremely packed and so I decided to try it the next day. The resturants is pretty large, but has a nice, modern clean feeling. They played nice music, Sinatra and such. There were also photos of musicians along the walls. It was still busy at lunch time, but not chaotic or crazy. I was seated quickly and my water and bread were brought out promptly. The bread was a little crispy for my liking, but once you got through the crust it was delicous, warm and tasty. I ordered the Sinatra chicken, which was a roasted thigh and noodles in a sweet sauce. It was very delicious and I enjoyed my lunch.

Amazing food and good portion sizes. But the service was not good. When we walked in the restaurant was almost empty but they couldn't figure out which table to seat us at. Once seated we were asked to move because there had been a leak above our table, so we got up and then were told to stay at the same table. The waitress was friendly but we waited minutes for our waters to be refilled throughout the meal. I could understand this in a busy restaurant but with only about 6 seated tables in the restaurant it was a negative. Would consider returning for the quality of food but not for the service.

If you are in the mood for Italian and you can't make it downtown, this is a good stop. The drinks are ok ($5 martinis on Wednesdays), but tend to be sugar-packed blends, lacking freshness from fruit and/or herbs. This is not a martini/cocktail bar so I can't judge them too much in this area. Lots of room for big parties, nice atmosphere, and generally ok Italian food (not the best in Cville though). Garlic bread here is drenched in butter...so good.

Had an excellent meal here last night while visiting UVA. Located in an outdoor shopping mall rather than downtown Charlottesville, it's a little easier to get to and find parking for than other restaurants, which is a plus. The food was awesome-- I had the roasted chicken which came with some of the best Brussel sprouts I've ever had along with a great bacon-rosemary sauce. The other food at the table--sole, bolagnase, and shrimp--all got rave reviews as well. Wine list was lengthy, and our server was prompt and helpful! Great experience!!

My last review for here was two stars and this one is a four-star, so lesson learned: MUST VISIT ON MARTINI NIGHT on Wednesdays w/a group of friends. It's hard to say no to only $5 (1/2 off usual price) for a wide array of high-quality specialty cocktails, so when my usual bi-weekly potluck group decided to go forego cooking this week and do happy hour and dinner after work instead, I decided to give Travinia another chance. So glad that I did! We all ordered a few rounds of the Remy Side Car, which was the perfect combo of sweet and tart/sour. (I'm not into those super fruity, saccharine drinks.) Pretty strong but subtle enough to not taste too much alcohol. For apps, we, of course, had to take advantage of the Yelp Check-In offer of the free nachos. This time, I also tried the low-carb friendly Antipasto platter - sooooo in love with the fresh buffalo mozzarella. For entrees, we all did salads. I got the Spinach and Goat Cheese. I was really into the fried goat cheese medallions, as that was a bit unusual. The dressing was a bit too syrupy sweet for me, and I would have enjoyed fruit and nuts in it (personal preference for this combo) so I wished I could have added pieces of the Granny Smith Apple Salad. Otherwise, I still enjoyed trying this dish too. It was a pretty gray, rainy day so we were seated inside in one of the huge, comfy, half-moon booths - perfect for lounging and conversation with a group. But I've also been outside near the fire and couches for a birthday party so that is another option if the weather is nice for a big group. Thanks to fellow Cville Yelper Alex M. for suggesting we meet here!

If anything, the service here is superb. Our waiter was VERY accommodating and super helpful when it came to the menu and all. We didn't even know which salad dressing to choose and he brought us out samples of the ones that interested us! Coolio. As for the food, hmm.. pretty good. I got the wild mushroom carbonara which seemed to essentially be alfredo pasta.. Huge portion so at least I somewhat got my money's worth out of that. But I'd have to say the most disappointing part of the meal was the tiramisu!! My inner soul got so excited when our waiter told us there was tiramisu but died once I actually ate it.. It had a very thick consistency that wasn't fitting for the tiramisu and didn't do anything to help flatter it in anyway. But I mean.. at least you get a bigger portion of it than you would at another place for the same price ($8, my wallet cried.. so did my inner soul because = disappointing tiramisu). Much sad.

Okay so 4 stars is for the food and atmosphere alone. I want to say up front that our waitress? MUCH to be desired. I think she tailored her service to us based on what kind of tip she THOUGHT she was going to get rather than how her service should have been. That was the impression I got. I felt like she ignored US but was attentive to her other tables. This was her loss, because I happen to be a fantastic tipper. I'm not above tipping sometimes up to 50%, and sometimes even more, depending on HOW above and beyond they seem to go. Especially on a first time visit so she missed out majorly. She went back and forth many times and we were right by the kitchen door. I spilled my drink because I have short fingers and the glasses are... strange. Beautiful, but not meant for short fingered people. It took her a minute, but she came with cocktail napkins to clean it up, then was going to leave the sticky table. I had to ask for a rag. Finally got the rag, never replaced my drink, so I had a sticky partially full glass which I never saw her again to replace until we were ordering our food. It took her SO long to get to us that we had appetizer order ready and discarded it, never placing it and instead skipped to ordering our main order of food because we didn't think we would have enough time before the movie. I actually was on the verge of suggesting we get up and leave. I feel like she was giving us poor service because of the way my family looks (Flip flops, shorts, mismatched kids clothing, it was a kind of throw together outing and no one but me knew we were coming to this place), and because of the drink spill. That being said, that was 1 individual server, and the rest of the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They all greeted us, spoke to us in passing, and seemed extremely attentive to their own tables. So seeing that, I won't let the fact that we got the one ignorant serve color this review too much. Atmosphere: It was fantastic. The tables were spaced nicely, the seating was comfortable, beautiful. The kitchen is behind glass at the back of the place so you can see everything being prepped, and since we were seated back there it was even better. They have an outdoor seating area with a fire pit that we always see when we're going to the movies and that's what made me want to come to this place. They have a huge bar that looked fantastic, and cozy and I could actually see myself going here for drinks with some friends. Now for the food. Any time my family goes to a new place we generally share our food with each other so we can all get a feel for how the food is. There wasn't a single thing I didn't like. My mother got the Shrimp Fra Diavolo which I was expecting to be sort of like shrimp and grits which kind of was, but much more elegant. My sister got Pasta Mia Nonna, I got Sinatra Chicken, 2 of the kids split a Tagliatelle Alfredo (We added a side of chicken) and 1 of the kids got a pepperoni pizza. We also ordered a roasted chicken flat bread, a and a side of roasted corn risotto (as part of the meal, not as an app). They served bread before the meal which was chewy and soft and warm and delicious. Everything came out super fast! So here's my thing about food. Chain restaurants have a particular... flavor profile. They are extra salty, sometimes over-spiced, ALWAYS over-sauced with super huge helpings to make up for the lack in originality and that's OK for what it is. You can tell the difference when you go to a place that takes more care with their food, and this place does. The pasta wasn't over-sauced, and the sauces that came with things were flavored nicely, not overly aggressive. Normally you get risotto and it's overcome with the salty cheesy quality so you can't taste the other ingredients, this was light and full of flavor from the corn. You could taste the cheese, but you could taste the corn so much more. My dish, the noodles came lightly sauced and then there was a single splash of sauce on my chicken which I thought was strange until I started eating it and then it made sense. Any more sauce would just have been too much. Again, not so much salt i couldn't taste all the flavors. It was wonderful. I did read some reviewers saying something about the size of the entrees and yes they are a bit small compared to a chain restaurant but the quality is much better so it's a nice trade off for me. Next time, though, if we get that same waitress I'm going to request another. I gave her a decent tip because that's what I do, and I strongly feel for the waiters and waitresses of the world, but she was not a great waitress at ALL and next time I won't even give her the benefit of the doubt that it was a bad day. On a $96 bill I left her $20, but had she not been so neglectful she definitely could have gotten twice that from me. I love tipping nice for great service in a place I enjoy being at. Too bad she didn't find that out.

We came for dinner, mostly out of convenience, given the proximity to the hotel at which we stayed. I think we probably should have ventured out to the other, awesome places in Charlottesville. Food was decent, but nothing exciting. Wait service was odd -- our server was pleasant enough, but stunningly casual in just about every interaction with us. Portions are enormous. We split a salad and an entree, and even then, we ended up sending some food back. Again, this place isn't bad, but it isn't great. The bar is open to the outside as well as to the inside of the restaurant, which, on a nice day, I'd imagine it allows for some breeze. But, it also allows for acrid cigar smoke. I don't think that's the restaurant's fault, but it also didn't add to the experience much.

Fantastic. Great food and wonderful attentive servers. I spilled my wine across the table and they took away my embarrassment with their kindness. It is wonderful when the food is great and your waiter is too. Thank you Tray!

The atmosphere is warm & welcoming with a nice sitting area. Great window view into the kitchen was a nice design feature. Pan roasted chicken was tasty. Several GF options. Service was slow but adequate if you are not in a rush. Problem today - flies. Hard to enjoy a good meal swatting. Management resolution was a willingness to pack up our food. We experienced this as bizarre, but took the suggestion & left.

Been here a few time, overall, three stars for the food, two stars for the service. The bread is to die for, it's much better than regular restaurants, and it's aways warm and toasty. Be careful not to eat too much or you won't have room for your meal. I've always opted for the pasta dish, tried the wild mushroom carbonara and the classic fettuccine alfredo. The pasta was cooked and seasoned well, though personally, I found the combination of wild mushroom and peas a bit weird. The pizza and the sandwich were just okay. One time, my husband ordered a chicken parmesan sub. The server brought a meatball sub the first time, she took it back and returned a chicken parmesan pasta dish. The food was finally right the third time, but by then, I was almost done with my pasta. Service was really not very good here. The hostess always look very bored and annoyed when people come in. The staff, though energetic, do not seem to be very professional. There were times when the forgot to bring us our drinks or the bread. We always had to wait a long time for our checks.

I want, in fairness, to start with the good... The restaurant was impeccably clean from the approach to the ladies room. The decor was typically beautiful fake Italian, and they not only had al fresco dining, but an area where indoor/outdoor dining flowed together. It was very well-done. Add to that, the service was prompt, friendly and attentive without hovering. So why would I only give this wonderful place 2 stars, you ask? It's the food. Although our very sweet waitperson kept saying the menu was extensive, I felt it was quite limited - and pricey for what you get. Entrees do not include anything else, such as a small side salad. That said, the portions were small, and I am a small eater. The food was mediocre, but definitely not something to write home about. You definitely don't want to go here for a romantic dinner for 2, at least not eating inside. Once the place fills up, you can't hear yourself think, much less what your date said. Overall, the experience would have been great - for half the price.

Very busy on a Friday night. They were still very accommodating. The food was good and so were the drinks. Too pricey for what you get. Great location near a new movie theater. Great for dates. On another note, seating was a bit weird. The long bench that connected the tables was a bit odd. Didn't like it. Otherwise a pretty good experience.

My husband and I treated a group of friends to dinner recently, and I wish I could say that the money spent was worth the experience. The food was fairly good, but the service was far below what a place like this should offer. Our waitress was a young lady that had blondish colored hair, cut just above her shoulders. To say she knew very little about wine/food was an understatement. And when my husband questioned her about menu items and food preparation, she seemed as though she was irritated by him doing so. I even caught a glimpse of her rolling her eyes as she walked away from us. Later on in the evening, when our entrees were delivered, she placed my plate in front of one of my guests (instead of in front of ME). When I politely told her that I the plate was mine, she sighed, made no apology, and retreated to the kitchen. I was dumbfounded. Seconds later, I found one of her hairs laying across my plate! I did not want to embarrass this young girl or get her in trouble with the manager, so I sat through the dinner and did not eat my entree. If it would have been just my husband and myself, I would have asked to speak to a manager. It is my opinion that my experience with Travinia could have been avoided if a manager would have noticed that this server's hair was not pulled back/in a style conducive to serving food! To be completely honest, it was messy and appeared unkept. It is also management's responsibility to educate/hire servers that have adequate food and wine knowledge. This server could not even open our bottle of wine--she was too young. I could go on about having to wait for our check, refills on our water, etc. But, what's the use? People that are willing to pay this kind of money on dinner simply want a higher level of service. We recommend hiring servers with more experience and a bit of personality!

We have been coming to Charlottesville for several years and always come to Travinia for at least one meal. Atmosphere is nice and the food is excellent! We showed up last night without reservations and were seated and ordering within 10 minutes even though it was a busy, graduation weekend.

Good happy hour deals on Wednesday for the specialty martinis, they are really really good (and moreish so try an find someone else to drive). I have been to Travinia a few times over the last couple of month and often recommend it to friends. It has a nice outdoor seating, area with fire pits and patio heaters, which is great for parties and gatherings and also a very comfortable interior. I have only tried the salads and sides but everything I have had was delicious I would recommend any of the salads along with the nachos and the meat board too. The fresh mozzarella on the meat board was fab! All-round a good atmosphere, attentive staff, and great martinis.

The hotel recommended Travinia, so off we went. My boss and 2 colleagues in toe. Fingers crossed I still have a job after this meal!! The food warrants a solid 3 stars. Not great...but for Charlottesville, not bad. The atmosphere was full of energy and engaging. Our waiter was a drag. He provided 'drive by' service. Never really stopping...just a drive by our table every 15 minutes or so. The next day, I stopped by for lunch. The wait for was easily 20 minutes for a grilled chicken sandwich and a salad. Really!?! To make it worse, my food was cold by the time it arrived. Unbelievable. Such a shame...the place has a great atmosphere and such potential!

Visited for the second time last night. To my surprise there was no wait on a Friday night around 6:30pm. We were seated in the bar area and the waiter was taking our order within 5 minutes. This is where they lost stars. Even though we order our appetizer with our drinks, it came out with our entree. Also, the food was a little cold. My wife had the blackened shrimp alfredo, which was a wonderful blend of flavors and just the right amount of sauce. I had the lobster ravioli. It would have been wonderful if it were piping hot, however it wasn't. The parmesan cheese barely melted. The atmosphere was nice. Even though we were sat in the bar area, the noise level was very reasonable and you were able to hold a conversation without yelling. I would recommend the fried zucchini bites as and appetizer, it was wonderful. Just make sure you order it really, really early.

Very friendly service right off the bat. We got the nachos small plate, which wasn't a small plate at all! They were also not your traditional nachos, the chips were far crispier and the sauce wasn't super cheesy like you typically find. I would recommend if you're feeling something fried. I then got the Granny Smith apple salad (no meat) and really enjoyed it! The apples were really crisp and cut thinly for just the right amount of green apple per forkful. The salad was a great portion size as well, definitely filled me up and great value for the price ($9). Overall would recommend both Travinia and the apple salad.

We've been here 4 times now. While the food is acceptable, and arguably among the best Italian fare in Charlottesville, it is an extremely frustrating experience. Again, for the second time, we waited 40 minutes at the bar for a table while several were unoccupied. I just don't get it. Maybe the high school girls who greet us at the door? It will he a long time before we return.

We love this restaurant! The reception desk isn't the most accommodating, but we love the food, the atmosphere, and the location. Try to come early and sit in the couches inside or hang out by the fires outside.

I was searching for a place to hold a luncheon for 15 people in Charlottesville, and settled on Travinia Italian Kitchen. I am very happy with that decision! The Catering Manager, Robin Martin-Lawson, was very accommodating with my requests. I secured the privacy of 'The Wine Room' for the event and worked with Robin to customize my dining entrees from a wide selection of food and prices. When I arrived for the event, the room looked fabulous. The service was impeccable and the food delicious. Anyone looking for a work or private function should consider Travinia and their team for a wonderful dining experience! Good job Travinia!!

Visiting Charlottesville and we were looking for an Italian Restaurant. Fortunately Travinia was right next door to movie theater where we were going so decided to try it out. The food was phenomenal and the service was excellent as well. I got the Chicken Cannelloni and it was fantastic. My brother got lasagna Bolognese, which I sampled and it was great as well. We used the Yelp app to get free Italian nachos and they were amazing as well. All in all a fantastic experience. We will definitely be back!

We stopped at travinia in leesburg so we thought we would try this one out. My youngest son absolutely loves the herb chicken. He picked it clean! My celiac son ordered a pasta with chicken and a white sauce and really enjoyed it. I had the Parmesan flounder. The fish itself was a little on the dry side but it had a really good sauce on it too. My wife had a shrimp and sausage dish and wasn't overly fond of it. My only complaint was with the service time for our dessert. We had to wait over 30 minutes between finishing dinner and getting the dessert. I'm not sure where we got lost. Our server was nice enough about it but it was a little irritating to wait so long. We will probably go back because the have such a good gluten free selection.

Drinks and appetizers were terrific, dinner was OK - cold pasta. There is another review that talks about the hostesses and I have to agree. We waited at the bar. They said they would text us when a table was available. Many were as it was Tuesday night and no text. We finally went to ask if we would be getting a table and were told they forgot to text us. Waiter was also very distracted, I think too busy trying to get out. Lastly, this is nitpicking, but the girl who brought our entrees never cleared the empty appetizer dishes. Overall, service wasn't good.

My wife and I stopped by for drinks last evening after a movie. We have been there many times before. We were turned off by the cadre of old men, who were obviously regulars, being loud and boisterous. Our goal was to have a quiet drink and talk to each other. This is not the place. If you are a 75+ year old who likes to drink (and smoke by the way they smelled) and be loud, your friends are at Travinia.

Thought it was a bit pricey, but everyone loved their food, the nachos are excellent and love the pizza - service is good but slow, had a group of 7 that I had sent an email reservation for, they had the table ready when we got there. Great place to go for a business lunch. also a lot of people talked about coming back there for dinner with their spouses. Would definitely go back.

Neat atmosphere. The AC was turned way down, place was freezing and I'm rarely cold. Wife had chicken scalapini and was good, could use more sauce. Daughter had calamari and it too was tasty (though was not served hot, prolly sat in service window too long). I had the spaghetti bologonese with meatballs. The sauce is just ok and unfortunately my meatballs was cold. GREAT wait service. Will try again but they still have some kinks to work out.

I love Italian food, but rarely expect it to be good in a corporate restaurant. I figured I'd give Travinia a try because I happened to be in the area. Waited at the host stand for a while before being seated, despite being in view of the manager. After we were seated, it was quickly obvious that our server was new, and she even admitted it during the meal so I cannot criticize her too much. I was looking forward to the food as the menu actually looked surprisingly good, but based off of other reviews here, I had very low expectations. Those low expectations should have been lower. I got the bolognese, one of my all time favorites, and it honestly was horrible. It might have well been chef boyardi. None of the people I was dining with had good things to say about their meals either, with the exception of one person who said their sinatra chicken was "edible." What really blew my mind was the complete lack of professionalism by the management. Having fun with your staff and flirting with the waitresses might be acceptable if you aren't failing as a restaurant, but this is not the case with Travinia. The frat house atmosphere put off by the two managers on duty was embarrassing and is no surprise that the food and service is so lack luster. Poor food and service starts from the top. A staff that doesn't care is a reflection of poor leadership. Will definitely not be back and recommend that others considering this restaurant avoid it at all costs and consider some of the other alternatives in the area.

My husband and I had been here before, but were not overly impressed, particularly with all of the great restaurants in Charlottesville. We were in the area recently, and decided to give it another chance. We were very disappointed. First, we had to wait a long time for a table. There was one open, but no one was bussing it. The hostess finally bussed the table by herself (we watched several waiters pass by her without offering to help). Our waiter then took a long time to come to our table. Throughout the night the service was slow--the waiter spent a good portion of his time talking to the women at the table next to us instead of providing service. The food was not bad, but it was not spectacular (and did not justify the bad service).

Good place for Italian food. Came here with family friends, they recommended the place, pretty fast service and really on top of things. We came out pretty full, got free nachos for the yelp check in! Not bad! Had a couple different pasta dishes, some were good some were just decent. But overall a good experience. I'll go back if I live in the area.

The next time I come back to Travinia, I will just order the appetizers. My bf and I had the calamari and Zucchini platters and we were good. We ordered the ahi tuna and pork entree, which I think are not very impressive. Overall, nice ambiance and yummy appetizers. They also give wine samplers.

I went here with a group, otherwise I probably would have checked Yelp first and seen it had only 3 stars. I echo that rating. The Italian food was fine, but nothing special. I got the "wild mushroom carbonara", which was described as having truffle oil. I did not detect any truffle taste at all, and the mushroom pieces were small and rare. The ambience was nice for a large group, and I appreciated the large selection of wines by the glass, but I didn't think the food was that great.

Dined there on Sat Oct 18th & had one of the worst dining experiences. Deceived about wait time, painfully slow & inattentive service, 1 hr wait for simple dinner orders, not everyone's food came out together, mediocre food. Don't waste your hard earned $ on this

Let me start by saying that we had a wonderful server here. She was attentive, patient, personable, and knowledgeable about the menu. I will also say that the food, while solidly mediocre, is perfectly edible, nicely plated, generously portioned, and reasonably priced. Let me add that the restaurant's design is appealing and spacious. So what's the problem? I would say it's probably the management of the place. For starters, on a relatively pleasant night outdoors, the temperature inside Travinia seemed to be in the low 60s. I was instantly cold and wished I had brought a sweater with me. The mega air conditioning became truly uncomfortable as the evening wore on, I was literally shivering, even after coffee. Second management issue: while our server was terrific, actual service from the waitstaff was a joke. Our main courses came roaring out of the kitchen before we were even half way through our salads. The supremely unprofessional character who brought the dishes out was mightily annoyed when we told him we weren't finished with our first course. He rolled his eyes and let out a petulant sigh, and tried to dump the plates on the table even though there was absolutely no place to put them. Thankfully, our server materialized and sent him back to the kitchen with the plates. I suppose had the food been exceptional, one might make allowances for some of this. But the food isn't exceptional. It's the type of food you would expect from Macaroni Grill and similar places. I wanted to give this place 3 stars in deference to our terrific server, but I couldn't bring myself to brand it A-OK. It's not.

I wanted to give some feedback to our experience. We were going to get us something light and have some wine. We first looked at a restaurant called Salt or something like that. We have been to this restaurant many times with no problems. We really want a restaurant in Charlottesville that we can go to with great food and great customer service, I guess we are going to have to keep looking. We arrived and waited for at least 5 minutes for someone to come over and seat us (not the first time this has happened), a waiter that was working with another table saw us waiting to be seated and told his customers please wait. He then came over and tried to help us out. We sat down outside and ordered some wine and water. Then the wine and water was brought over to us and we ordered some light food. My wifes menu was stained as well. The waitress told us that the Happy Hour special was 25% off a bottle of wine, so we said we would like to have that. She left and came back and asked us did we already sample our wine. We said yes and was told that the bottle they poured from was a magnum and so we didn't get the 25% off our wine. As we sat waiting on our food to come we wanted to have some bread and some more wine but the waitress never came back. Our food arrived and was brought out by someone else and we had to ask her could she bring some eating utensils and napkins and she went to get some. We asked about our waitress not coming back and she said she didn't know why. First our pizza only had about 75% cheese on it so about 3 pieces had nothing on them. My nachos were to have meat on it and we had a hard time seeing any. Finally the waitress came back and we told her that she never came back to see if we needed anything and the food was not up to par. She apologized to us and said she thought because of what we ordered she didn't think we would need anything else. She apologized again and said she would get the manager for us and we said no thanks that it was ok. We are sure she said something to the manager because when we got up to leave we noticed the manager was standing inside and saw us getting ready to leave and he took off so he would not have to confront us. That's a first for us. Would we go back? I don't think so at this time.

Rating: 4.9999* Why not a 5 star? Well, because yelp always seems to filter them out. Experience: About a week and a half ago I started inquiring about places to have a great 60th birthday party for my amazing Father. Where did I start? Facebook, of course. I posed a question of where people would go for a nice private dinner. I had heard of most suggested, had been there before and was underwhelmed. A friend suggested Travinia and recommended Robin Martin - Lawson (catering manager). From first contact Robin blew me away. Friendly and helpful and really everything you would want as a first-contact. Robin and I exchanged many, many emails and her patience was one of the things I admired most about her. Even the smallest question or request was taken care of right away. One of our biggest issue was a large party where 3 of the diners were gluten free. Generally when you eat out it is a large pain. Travinia and Robin made it absolutely painless. They were an absolute dream to work with. And they made it all seem so effortless, even when asking that the food be made in gluten-free and regular portions. A few days before we were set to have our dinner I decided to check yelp. As an avid yelper I usually would have checked first, but I was so overwhelmed that I decided to take regular suggestions first. When I finally checked I was horrified at the reviews and definitely second guessed my choice. I wanted this to be perfect for my Father, and anything less would not do! I contacted Robin, told her I had read the reviews and I was worried. Robin went above and beyond -- easing my concerns and telling me she would not only hand pick our server but that she would personally be there to make sure the evening went well. Fast forward to tonight -- our date. We had a perfect private party in the wine room. I literally could not have asked for a better night. Great service, great food, great company. This was all that I wanted and more. This is our new go-to place for special occasions, for sure. I also wanted to mention how great our server was. His name escapes me right now, but he was absolutely fantastic! And utterly unflappable. We were very impressed with him. He was also very considerate when packing up leftovers, adding some extra bread for the gluten eaters and clearly marking the gluten-free leftovers.

Normally, I would give Travinia 4 of 5 stars. This past visit I doubt it even warrants one star. To start with, the service was painfully slow. The server didn't seem like there was any concern in checking on us or doing any part of the meal. The crabcake came out terribly. It was WAY too salty and tough like it had been leftover from last night and reheated to send out for lunch. It was terrible. Crabcake was sent back, but since it was too slow we were scared to order anything else. The worst part was no apology was made, and when the waiter said the crabcake had been taken off the check he acted like he was doing us a huge favor. Obviously, we are not going to pay for something that isn't palatable. I'd also expect if food had to be sent back that a manager would come check on the table but that didn't happen either. All in all, a really disappointing experience both from a service and food standpoint.

Overall, a decent experience, but there are better places to spend $50+ for a meal. THE GOOD My wife had the Rigatoni w/Braised Short Rib Bolognese Sauce and I had the Sinatra Chicken. We both enjoyed our meal, even though mine had a touch too much of the Grand Marnier which would occasionally overpower the pancetta. The Smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese with Pancetta side dish was delicious. In fact, if they had a larger version with strips of chicken, I'd order it every time! The $5 martini special made it easy to try something new! THE BAD Our server was either having a bad day or wasn't very interested in helping us. For instance, despite every other table getting bread, we had to ask for some. Her response was that the restaurant's policy was to only give bread upon request, which makes zero sense because there was nothing stating this... and EVERYBODY else had bread. The Crab and Shrimp dip we got was mislabeled. It should have been labeled Artichoke and Spinach dip because that was 90% of the components. The little bit of crab and shrimp was disappointing. And the crostini bread for the dip was WAY too hard. When you're virtually cracking teeth, it's beyond being even a crostini. The overall value of the food was mediocre. I've had Italian meals that were half the price and just as enjoyable, if not more.

This place is good even if you don't like eating at chain restaurants (small chain?) in shopping centers. We ate here last night and three of us were happy with the service, food, and prices. The ambience is relaxing as there is plenty of room so you aren't on top of other diners. Plus, the lighting is great and it isn't loud. The Sinatra Chicken is really yummy - and perfect if you enjoy chicken, ham, and cheese all together with a heaping serving of angel hair pasta. The Bolognese is decent although not as good as Fellini's (downtown Charlottsville) and the desserts are worth saving room for - especially the Apple Crostata). I'd go back - especially since my daughter liked it a lot.

We went on Halloween night. Our waitress told us they were about to start letting employees go home but suddenly customers flooded in the door. I say this because the service was not bad, and I used the term waitress because sever would be plural in this restaurant because they are a "team service" restaurant where you will see possibly several people at your table. Our waitress was a beautiful young 19-year-old girl dressed as a cheetah. She was young yes, and like a lot of young folks maybe a bit inexperienced, but she was a willing sweetie. The only misstep she had was totally forgetting our water at first, but then humbly apologized and promptly brought the water. Service overall was good, but one busboy (for lack of a better term) looked high...I kind of wondered if some of the staff enjoyed some smoke together that night. If so, it wasn't a major problem. So first the drinks. They have a great drink menu. I had the One Dirty Martini and it was perfect; I consider myself an aficionado of the dirty vodka martini and this one could not have been improved including the blue cheese stuffed olives which made it almost an appetizer. My wife had the Under The Tuscan Sunset and she said it was delicious but she would have appreciated some sort of edible garnish like cherries or other fruit. These were $10 martinis I did not mind paying for. We ordered a bottle of J. Lohr Baymist Riesling (California) one of the lowest priced wines on the list at $26 and it was wonderful. I loved the dirty martini so much I ordered another and called both martinis "half of my dinner". At $20 for the two, they were actually twice the cost of the food I ordered. The bread they bring to you is fantastic. Your server should grab a plate, drizzle some olive oil on it and suggest you try a dip, if not, help yourself. We are actually ordering the olive oil they use because we liked it so much we want it at home. An interesting note: You have to pay $3 to add a house or Caesar salad to your meal. Seems unnecessary to me and most restaurants comp a salad with any entrée, but I suppose some people don't want a salad so a lot of stuff goes to waste if they bring one and a diner eats three bites and they have to trash the rest. If you order a salad, it is good. So...food: Since I was drinking half my dinner I ordered the Prince Edward Island mussels from the small plate menu. For some weird reason they don't show their small plates menu on their web site, which is a shame because they have some great items on it that are not on the regular menu. The mussels we steamed perfectly and served with crostini (very crunchy bread) to soak up the liquid goodness in the bottom of the bowl...of which I slurped every last bit of using a mussel shell. Yes...white trash I know, but I kept my pinky extended...so "y'all can kiss my grits!" My wife ordered the Seafood Pescatora, which she said was delicious; I have her leftover pasta from it and look forward to tasting it. The only question she had was "where is the calamari?" and she was told it was cooked in to the sauce. Her two sea scallops were cooked perfectly, nice and translucent in the middle the way a scallop is properly cooked. If you don't like scallops that way why order them? When they are cooked trough they are rubbery...that's kind of like ordering a well-done steak...what's the point? Order pot roast of you want grey meat! At least it will be tender... Wife ordered the tiramisu. It was good, but not a proper tiramisu at all. A tasty fail on the dessert. So I give 4 stars out of five because our water was initially forgotten, the bartender did not provide a garnish for my wife's cocktail so she could have something to nosh on (all specialty cocktails should always have an edible garnish) and the tiramisu was not actually tiramisu. Otherwise we were very happy and have never been unhappy at Travinia...except for that three-dollar salad thing. Oh, my wife wanted to register one complaint: When you arrive, the hostess tells you your wait time and then wants to text you when your table is ready. First of all we don't "text"...we speak to each other; secondly why would you give your phone number to a restaurant? Call us old, but common sense seems to be losing it's grip on society. In addition, the table we were finally seated at in five minutes, not the 15 we were told was open, along with several others right behind where we sat at the bar to kill that 15 minutes. We could have been seated immediately but instead had to hastily settle a bar tab and move our drinks to the table we should have been immediately seated at.

Travinia in Cville has great catering staff and menu options! Recently provided dinner for a neighbor and their family who was recovering from an injury. The bread was amazing, salad was fresh and the Short Rib Rigatoni entrees were delicious! Best of all was working with the excellent catering manager, Robin. Will definitely hire her again to plan the next event!

This was a terrible dining experience. My finace and I decided to try this restaurant after going to the UVA basketball game on Friday night. We arrived around 9PM and decided to sit at the bar as there were some other games on TV that we wanted to watch. The bar was relatively busy--most of the seats at the bar were full and a handful of the tables in the bar area had customers. We were greeted by one of the three bartenders and given a drink & dinner menu. I used the bathroom pretty quickly after we were seated and was unimpressed with the cleanliness and smell of the facilities. There was a dank, musty smell in the women's restroom in addition to paper towels cluttering the counter-top and spilling out of the trashcan. Upon returning to my seat we ordered drinks and I asked what the soup-of-the-day was and the bartender looked at me like I was crazy and said, "at this point in the night you definitely don't want to order that. It's nasty." Based on that glowing recommendation I decided to order a pizza figuring that couldn't be easily screwed up. My finance ordered pasta with bolognese sauce. As we waited for our food, we were distracted from watching the games on TV by the back-and-forth between the bartenders about how little money they had made that night. They were also complaining to one another about who was going to get to go home first. As an order came, one bartender picked up the ticket and exclaimed, "I refuse to make this drink right now." Our food came in a reasonable amount of time. My pizza was handed to me by the food runner and as I touched the plate it felt dirty. There were food smears on the bottom and the rim of the plate. As I went to pull a slice off of the plate, the crust completely detached--the pizza was a soggy mess. I ate a few bites and it tasted no better than it looked. The pasta was better, but it didn't have a high bar to pass. To his credit, the bartender recognized that I was underwhelmed and didn't charge for the pizza. I recognize that he doesn't work in the kitchen and has little control over food quality, but he and his colleagues' unprofessional performance behind the bar did little to make up for the poor food. I wanted to like this place because it has a very cute ambiance and I like the fireplaces and heaters in the outdoor area. Unfortunately that's not enough for me to pay high prices for really crummy food and service.

Not impressed whatsoever. The food was very pedestrian and I gave it 2 attempts before I realized it wasn't going to get any better. The decor and outdoor seating is nice but that's where it ends. Italian food is not that difficult to prepare, or so I say as a foodie and a good cook, but I know I could have made a better impression and a more favorable dish than the one I was served.

Stopped in for dinner tonight and sat outside. The "side" salad was pretty darn big, I hardly made a dent in it before my entree arrived. My pasta was okay, but there was hardly any sauce on it and my eggplant parm was more bread than eggplant. That said the food was tasty enough and the service friendly and attentive.

My overall experience at this new restaurant wasn't terrible, but definitely didn't live up to my expectations. The staff exerted great customer service (e.g. a couple of people in my party weren't satisfied with the food, and the manager/waitress were extremely helpful/patient). Also, when we wanted to use the Yelp reward for checking into the restaurant, they gladly let us substitute since they were out of the particular dish. However, the main entrees were extremely average. I live in a small town, with three places I can think of to get great gourmet pizza (Waterstone Pizza, Rivermont Pizza, and Arosto in case you were wondering)...and ALL of them beat out this place. Which was disappointing. I figured they need more time to establish their menu, because it has great potential. I'll come back a few months from now to try them again. Here's a quick tip: Try the Gouda macaroni and cheese or calamari. Both of them stood out to me.

My husband and I had decided to spend Valentines this year with my grandfather and Uncle as both had recently lost their wives. We decided on a movie and dessert at Travinia. We arrived at around 9:30, and the hostess was very friendly and seated us immediately. However our evening took a turn for the worse from that point on due to the terrible service. Our server never even looked us in the eye, and made us feel like he was doing us a favor by even taking our order. As someone who has worked almost every Valentines Day for the past decade as either a server or bartender I understand it can be a tough night, but he was rude on a level that was surreal. Brought our coffees out with no spoons so we were stirring with our knives, never bothered to check up on us. When it came time to pay he returned our check with a credit card belonging to someone else in it, and after looking around for him for several minutes another diner in the servers section approached us and had our card. Our server never apologized because he was never seen again before we left. With so many quality places to eat in Charlottesville this goes down as one of the worst dining experiences we have had in years and all we wanted was to enjoy some coffee and dessert.

Seems like some harsh treatment from some reviewers, but Tim and his staff did a great job for us and kind words don't come easily for me. We dropped a bomb on the staff, walking in Saturday night of graduation weekend and asking for a table for 8 about 2 hours before we needed it, at the height of the rush. Tim accommodated us graciously. Then we came back and had to bump it into the teeth of the rush. He pulled it off again. Half of us arrived at the appointed time and had some wine and bruschetta. I would have liked to see more local wine on the menu but I understand that at this point, it's likely there are wines all the Travinia's serve and once established each GM can find a balance and relationship with local distributors. The selections were solid and reasonable all the same. The list was clear and I liked that they specified their rail drinks. The staff was pleasant and attentive and helpful. Our table was well placed, especially considering the last minute nature of our seating. The bruschetta were solid, given tomatoes are yet in season. But you could grab the garlic off the bread and the topping wasn't heavy handed. All the elements were there. For me, the test of a good Italian restaurant is its veal dishes. Simple or extravagant, if the kitchen can't love veal and respect it, you have trouble. It was nice to see they buy open range veal, since the Old School method of raising veal doesn't sit well with me and you never know. 3 of us got variations of the veal -- scaloppini, saltimbocca, marsala. Two got pizzas. One the seafood scampi, one the soup du jour. All the veal and the sauces were on point. Our friend was very happy with his scampi; the kids dug their 'zas. Our dining guests were a family of 5 from New Jersey where they live, eat, and breathe Italian. They thoroughly enjoyed it. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Everything was properly cooked, came out well and service was spot on, especially given the frenzy of the evening. And that's the nice thing about the menu, it's familiar for family or friends and both together. But it's not overwhelming or frou-frou. The decor is upscale but the food is down-home Italian with a low-key flair. An American trattoria. Was it transformative? Was it the most awesome display of culinary dexterity that I have tried recently? Was it a stunning value and an atmosphere that transported me to an Italy of my mind and heart? No. But it was well organized, well presented and well cooked. A lot of base hits adds up to a lot of runs -- and four stars in my book. I'd rather have my familiar, trattoria give me my comfort foods with no fanfare than try to pull off something it can't. There are too many restaurants in Cville that act like they're more than they can deliver. And the customer ends up paying for it in every bad way. From the front to the back I think Travinia is working out its opening day issues -- the front and back in a place like this need a few months to get it rolling -- and I'm glad. I'll be back. And for all you naysayers, give it another shot.

The food here is typical "upscale" mall chain. People seem to leave satisfied. My quibble is that for a place that bills itself as a "kitchen and wine bar," the wine selection is not at all good. All mass-market supermarket brands. You might as well be sipping at a Ruby Tuesday.

Usually I feel bad dumping on a restaurant that's still finding its feet, but man, this place is in dire need of a good dose of tough love. I have no gripes against the food and the drinks, because I'd go back here just for the prosciutto and fig pizza and the gin fizz: on average, the prices here are lower than those at Tavola or Bellas and the portions are bigger, even though the taste is few notches lower in quality. Exterior is a sad rip-off of Atlantic City-style flamboyance. Problem numero uno with the service: despite the fact that there were plenty of empty tables and booths, the hostess decided to seat us inside a private room that was already occupied near the back of the restaurant. The expressions on that party of seven were pretty priceless: here, they were expecting a boisterous evening inside a secluded room all to themselves, and now we showed up to crash their party. I have no idea what was going on in the hostess's pretty little head and yeah, the onus was on us to ask for another table, but it takes a tremendous amount of oblivion/lack of social awareness to pretend not to notice 1) our expressions of discomfort, and 2) that other party's obvious desire to have the room to themselves. Problem number two: our waitress was a total schizophrenic. That other group was clearly giving her a nice big fat tip at the end of the night, so she spent the whole time we were there joking around with them, tripping over herself to fulfill their every demand, and otherwise basking in their attention. Now, I don't expect the exact same treatment, but it got a little uncomfortable when she hemmed and hedged about splitting my friend's dish in two so she could take half of it home (a pretty standard request, I think, when the salads at this place come in smaller sizes), took her sweet time acknowledging our requests for water (especially when she was in the SAME FREAKING ROOM as us), and generally stood with her back to us while she fawned over the other table. She also had this tendency to stare in silence for a few seconds too long whenever we asked her something. The cherry on top? After the other party left, we decided to stay for awhile and chat. She comes in and starts sweeping up and cleaning. Then she starts vacuuming. I was AGOG. Surely there are better, more subtle ways of booting your customers out than that.

This was my first time coming here and it was great! I was just traveling through the area decided to eat here. The bread we got was fresh and warm and tasted great. The calamari we got for an appetizer was great. I got the spaghetti and meatballs which was also great. Then we got the chocolate cake for dessert with some ice cream and it tasted incredible. If I'm ever back in this area, I will definitely come back.

Dill sauce to dilly, Messina bland, out of Calamari at 4 pm. Olive oil for bread lacked flavor. Typical chain restaurant, next time we will eat across the street at pasture. Staff nice.

I read some of the reviews about how terrible the service was, but we had 2 hours until our movie started, so I thought we would be fine. Well, we were WRONG. we had high hopes for this place, but our server was so inept that he apologized and told us we may get some of our dinner free. Being in a hurry (he and all employees had been AWOL our entire dinner), we paid and left in a hurry. As we were walking out, a man asked if he could have a minute of our time. Confused (his mannerisms indicated he was a Mormon bible-seller), I told him we were late for a movie. He indicated he was the GM for the place and wanted to know how our service was. When I told him I asked for a water three times and received no water and that we waited 30 minutes for our check, he had nothing to say! It was bizarre. We were late for our movie and won't be back.

Had lunch at Travinia today. The food was great and the price was in line with the quality. What made lunch a better experience was the exceptional service we received from our Server Curtis. If anyone is going to Travinia anytime soon ask to sit in Curtis' s section. He will most definitely enhance the experience.

I think people who tried this place early on need to give it another chance because our party of four had an amazing dining experience here last night. First the food: We had the mussels to start with and they were served in a really good buttery wine sauce. They were cooked perfectly and really flavorful. The portion size was also generous. For my entree I had the oven roasted sea bass, which OH MY GOD, is literally the best sea bass I have ever had. I had heard from other diners that it was good but words cannot describe how awesomely delicious this dish is. The sea bass was cooked absolutely perfectly and was juicy and flavorful. It's served with a side of grilled zucchini and carrots and served in a butter sauce. While I could have gone with a little less butter, I think next time I'll order the butter sauce on the side, I could not have asked for better prepared sea bass. The vegetables were also tasty and I will definitely be back to have this dish again. Other people at the table tried various pastas and they were also very satisfied with their dishes. Drinks: Wednesdays are half price martinis until 8 pm which is a good deal. I had the Peach Love, and Happiness martini which was good. It had a hint of mint flavor and while it wasn't my favorite drink the world I enjoyed it. They also have a good selection of beer on tap. Finally the service: Our waitress, Brandy, was awesome. She was friendly and attentive even though we were at our table for a solid two hours talking, drinking, eating, etc. She was really helpful with menu selections and great with drink and bread refills (the bread is awesome too by the way)! I would definitely return and ask to sit in her section. Overall a solid A for this place, will definitely return!

I do not understand these horrible reviews below. My experiences at Travinia have always been above and beyond in both service and food (and I am a tough critic). I continue to return and find this my go to restaurant in Charlottesville. This is the perfect place for every occasion. I even hosted my friends bridal shower here and it was a huge success. If you have not tried Travinia you should despite the mixed reviews. The crab cakes, filet and spinach & goat cheese salad are just a few of my favorites but honestly I could eat the Gouda Mac everyday. Wednesday nights are usually my "girls night out" and with the top shelf martinis being HALF price it's easy to assume that this is where we will go. Service is always fast and friendly and the management seems to really take the time to make sure that your visit is a pleasant one.

Bad reviews so far, but I thought the place was good. Service was actually excellent. It was Friday night, the place was packed, we had a big party, table was ready for our reservation time, waitress offered to split checks (in Charlottesville this never happens), so maybe they have fixed their service issues. As for the food, it was good. The menu is massive. The free bread is good, but then again any fresh baked bread covered in oil and garlic would probably taste good. Fried calamari appetizer was great. Crabcakes were good, high quality lump crabmeat but somewhat ruined by an excessive amount of oil/butter. Fig and prosciutto pizza was disappointing only because the crust was bland. Toppings were high quality and tasty, but I think someone forgot to put salt into the dough because it was tasteless. Most of the other dishes in the party were good but unremarkable. Prices ranged from the low teens to high 20's. I'll probably be back as there were many things left to try, especially now that Bella's has raised their prices. 3.5/5 stars, but since they're only one-month young I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and bump up.

I have been here twice now. After the first time I swore never to come here again, but was forced to for a group dinner. If you actually like eating good food, I can't recommend this restaurant with any conscience. Aside from the palatable white wine and the bread (which you need to request to come out with the butter on the side, else they drown it in a vat of butter and garlic before placing it in front of you), everything here is flavored with only one thing: butter. Enough to coat your throat for a few hours after. I am appalled at what they pass off as restaurant quality "food" here. This time, I ordered chicken piccata. Now that's pretty hard to mess up. Even my friend's husband can make that, and that's the only dish he makes. I was amazed by how there were less than 10 capers on my plate (I counted) and absolutely no lemon juice. I had to take lemon from the communal lemon slice plate and squeeze lemon juice onto my pasta myself. The chicken was dried out and pruny. The capers had no flavor. Basically I paid a bunch of money for butter marinated chicken cooked in butter with butter pasta. Wow.

We ordered side salads, plus one of us ordered soup and the other, pizza. Salads were ok, My pizza never came so I was charged the full price for the salad. Oh oops, I didn't put the pizza order in, do you want to wait for it? No, since we had already been there a long time. Realized later that I was charged $7 for lettuce and a bit of tomato. Oh well... Also, one of the drinks we were brought had some dried food stuck to the top of the glass. A big smear, quite obvious. After about 15 minutes we got it replaced. The soup was quite good, my companion allowed me to taste it. I had some lunch when I got home. Would have liked to try the pizza, will try to get one served to me if I go back!

Wow what a restaurant! Starting off with seared scallops over a delicious artichoke pesto risotto really made me look forward to the rest of the meal. I enjoyed a half size spinach and goat cheese salad and let me tell you, the hot pancetta dressing on that is to die for! My main course, the pork ribeye, was nothing short of perfection. The juiciness of the pork with the port wine reduction really makes your mouth water with every bite. The service there is excellent, we never went without anything we requested. We were greeted by a charming group at the front door who sat my party. The wait staff really is one of the best. They seem to work together as a group making for a welcoming warm environment to go along with their beautiful restaurant. Charlottesville gained a great addition with this establishment, you must try it out!!

Reviewed this a while back, terrible service but good food, what they did bring to us (only one of us received the entree we ordered, the other received nothing) Well today we tried again, went in, several people were ahead of us, waiting at the desk, where there were 2 staff people. One couple was seated, then a large group was seated. One of the staff people went with the group, the other wandered off. We stood there several minutes while there was no one at the desk, and other staff wandered by and looked at us like we were invisible. Finally we decided to give up, went over to Noodles and Company and had an excellent lunch. Two strikes and you're out, Travinia. I've been going to restaurants on average at least once a week for many years, and this is the worst service I have encountered, on both occasions.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
