I tried this place on a whim and, brother, was I surprised. I had not heard of it until the evening we went with friends, who were also were trying it on a whim. The place deserves much more exposure and recognition than it is apparantly getting! Service = Excellent. Our server was courteous, quite knowledgable, and patiently put up with our early delays in ordering talking football. Drinks = Excellent. The drinks were ample with a wide selection and a more than adequate wine list. Food = Outstanding. I had the Braised Bacon as a first course. Prepared perfect, superior persentation. My second course was the Halibut with beer battered potaoes. The fish was perfect and the potatoes quite surprising. They are actually large drops of mashed potatoes beer battered and fried for a unique texture and excellent taste. When you order your drinks, ask if they have the popcorn that evening, which they served with our drinks. This was the best popcorn I have had in my entire life, bar none, and I LOVE home made popcorn. In fact, they very graciously gave be a bag to take home which was gone before I went to bed. Long and short, great atmosphere, great people, and superior food, most of which is local I might add. Enjoy!

My boyfriend and I came here in September for a nice meal out, and we were very pleased with Brookville. The waitress was friendly and helpful and answered all our questions, and the food was fantastic. I loved my pork chop with applesauce and salad and my boyfriend really enjoyed his grilled cheese and salad. I love that their menu is very seasonal and changes frequently. We would definitely go back.

This is a very good restaurant with terrific service. As everyone has said, the ingredients are sourced locally as much as possible, and the food is very delicious. However, as with most high quality and premium food, the cost is moderately high, and the portions are small. This isn't a knock against them, just something consistent with "fine dining". However, the most impressive thing about this restaurant is their service. Extremely attentive, and if there is anything wrong with anything, they go out of their way to make sure the meal is exactly the way it should be. Chef gave us a complimentary appetizer because the entree's would take slightly longer than expected, because the food wasn't made to his standards. That level of attentiveness to their dish and craft, as well as making sure their customers were happy, is something I truly respect. It's a great place if you want to spend a little more money and want to have really nice food. But not a place you go to feel "stuffed".

We chose this place based on its use of local ingredients. We were not disappointed. Everyone that ordered them, said the crab cakes were the best they ever had.

I took the hubby there for his birthday dinner. We were both feeling mildly under the weather, but still enjoyed our meal there. I love the space/ambiance. Very elegant without trying too hard or feeling stuffy. I think the mason jar water glasses helps keep this place a bit more down to earth. Since we were both under the weather we didn't order much except entrees. But the entrees were very delicious! He had a pork belly, which he kept raving about how delicious it was. I had tri-tip with grits & horseradish sauce, which was equally as delicious. The menu changes weekly if not daily, and everything is fresh and local. We would probably eat there even more often, but the price was a bit much for us to frequent the place regularly. Our meals were int he $25 range. We were sad to be the only people in the restaurant on a Wed night (although it was 8PM...) This is a hidden gem that people NEED to visit and support! Food is delicious. Atmosphere great! Needs more people to know about it! :)

Had a good experience here with a group recently. The space is great and the service was top notch. Overall, the food was good but not quite next-level good yet. But I think they'll get there - very good ingredients and good people in the kitchen. The starters were maybe the highlight of the meal. We had four. (1) Cheese plate - very nice selection, a few outstanding soft cheeses served with sliced apple and very, very good fresh bread. (2) Some type of sausage - served with the good bread and a simple mustard - this was really simple but fantastic - maybe the best bite of the night. (3) Two arugala based salads - one with surryano ham and one with beets and a goat cheese cream - both were good. Across the group, we had almost all of the entree options. I had lamb sliders, which were topped with feta cheese and served with a potato salad. This dish was good but didn't blow my mind - the slider rolls were a little large for the lamb and the lamb wasn't overwhelmingly flavorful. It was good but could be revised a bit. A crispy pig ear dish topped with an egg was the entree for a few people - they generally thought it was good but the consensus seemed to be that it would have made for a better appetizer. It's a smaller portion and it's a bit heavy to eat as an entree. Lamb kebobs served on grits were well received as was a roasted chicken dish served on mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. Finally, we ordered both the desserts on the menu. The bacon waffle, which I believe is their only permanent menu item, was actually our second favorite dessert. The bacon didn't really come through and the dish, while good, was a bit bready given our earlier menu selections - but that's obviously the nature of a waffle. The toffee cookies, served with a glass of milk, on the other hand, were fantastic. A really nice last bite of a very good meal.

We eat here periodically, and every meal has been great. Recently ate there for a holiday brunch, there were 8 of us. They could not have been more gracious and lovely. The food was delicious-everyone enjoyed their meal, and we had some picky eaters. I had basic eggs, which were delicious. Their pancakes are fluffy and HUGE. The only thing I'd say is that they need to work on their sound system. On two occasions, I've had trouble hearing table mates because it is too loud. there is something about the acoustics and the way they have the speakers set up, plus the music they choose that is the perfect storm of too noisy. Otherwise, all good.

After living in Charlottesville for years, I can safely say that Brookville may be the best restaurant in town (and WAY less hyped than some of those other "best" restaurants that never fail to disappoint me). I have had different meals each time I have been (three times total) and they are all delicious and memorable to the point where we'll be at another restaurant and someone will say "remember the _______ (ramps, pork belly, bacon donuts, etc.) at Brookville?" and everyone will sort of sigh contently at the memory. Also, one person that I've gone with twice now does not eat pork and they have been SO accommodating to ensure that not only is she fed, but that she does not feel like she's just getting a meal as an after thought. I highly, highly recommend people check out this place.

Fabulous local food in an elegant setting. Crack a fresh farm egg on it: rule to live by. Looking forward to their spring menus!

We loved our quiet meal at Brookville on a chilly fall evening. We had the fingerling potato appetizer, and as a potato aficionado, I pronounce it devine! Then we shared the well touted hamburger and were not disappointed. I would have preferred a bun to the bread, but it all came together so well and was perfectly cooked. No kidding about the size, easily fed the two of us. No room left, but we had a baked -to-order chocolate chip/Heath bar cookie anyway and it was a delightful end to the meal. Ambiance was calm after a chaotic day, and wonderful, cheerful service provided by Taylor. Can't miss here.

I went to Brookville back to back nights, Friday and Saturday, and was amazed with not just how good the food was but by the fact that menu was almost entirely different both nights. The Pork Rillettes were unreal, lucious little ramakins of pork pate served with grilled bread, cornichons and mustard. I also tried a tomato layered with herbed goat cheese and a basil dressing, which was good enough that I was scraping up the remnants of cheese and tomato juice at the bottom. First night I had roasted chicken breast with a perfectly fried egg (sunny side up) on top, sprinkled with pecorino cheese. One thing I should say is that the menu (especially entrees) does not have a lot of choices. There were only two that Friday, but it lead me into ordering this chicken dish. It sounds kind of weird, but you get it and it looks beautiful and then you eat it and its wonderful. If there were 10 choices, I probably wouldn't have gotten this dish, but I glad I did! Second night I had a pork belly which was sliced (think like a GIANT piece of bacon) and grilled. Dressed with some Hoisin sauce (I thought it was BBQ, had to ask), and some arugla and tomato. Very simple. Very good. The next day I was wishing I could have eaten some more for lunch. Had some maple bacon waffle both nights (speaks for itself). I had the brownie too the first night and combined with the charred marshmellow on top, it was devine. Not a big sweets lover either, but this thing was good. Overall, I've got to say this is one of the best dining experiences I've ever had in Cville. You're getting way more for your money here than that other places on the mall, and if this restaurant was in San Francisco, he could charge twice as much and get away with it. People will probably be turned off by the lack of menu choices, but that should be a plus! It will force you to try stuff you ordinarily wouldn't. Put yourself in the chef's hands and you won't be disappointed!

Like Casey B, I'm from NYC and live in DC. This place is phenomenal! Simple ingredients + exception execution + creative pairings makes this place a must go place. I had a pork belly with grits and my wife had a pork tenderloin with apple sauce and a potato salad. My pork belly was Asian inspired dish without all the heavy sauce found on most Chinese pork spare ribs. The grits have no equal anywhere. They were creamy without being watery with a touch of chives (not sure) and seasoning. The pork tenderloin was fork tender with just the right amount of spices cooked to perfection. Chef Keevil puts his own spin on the potato salad that allows the base ingredients to shine through with the spices playing a strongly secondary role. Run, don't walk to taste the food at this place!

Food was probably some of the best I have ever had in Virginia. I don't want to give 5 stars for anything but perfect, however. The flavors and quality were outstanding, but there is arguably a lack of variety, or maybe it's just a lack of vegetables. Not a big deal, because I am a pork belly, beef tongue kind of diner, so I was very happy with my food. Everyone else at the table was quite happy as well. They do not seem to have their liquor license yet, and the wine list is extremely underdeveloped. Decor is sparse in a non-deliberate kind of way. Shouldn't let those things deter you. Good new restaurants in Cville are rare, and new restaurants based around a core of excellent cooking are of course more than rare. Ultimately if the front of the house aspects never panned out, I would still be a frequent customer of this place. It should only get better.

Delicious! Everything my boyfriend and I ordered was amazing. I was very impressed. We're already talking about going back.
(5)Erikka C.
Still good, still porktastic. Had the bacon deviled eggs (delish) and the burger. The burger was HUGE. It was hard to eat without getting sauce all over my hands/arms so it's definitely not first date night food ;) But the burger was so tasty, I didn't care. And the polenta fries were cooked perfectly. The waiter was very attentive and helpful. Too full for dessert but will be back again I'm sure!

This place is fantastic. I was in Charlottesville for a weekend earlier this month (I used to live there) and was looking for someplace to get dinner. I thought I'd see if there was anything good that had opened up since I moved, so I checked Yelp and saw that this place was well-reviewed. I'm really glad I gave it a shot. Brookville focuses on locally sourced ingredients, and dishes up spome great food. The burger I had was one of the best burgers I've ever eaten--the beef was great quality, and it was cooked perfectly, nice and rare so it stayed juicy. They have a nice bottled beer selection too. This place will definitely be my go-to restaurant on the mall next time I'm in town.

Somehow this place slipped past my radar until about a month or so ago, when I heard some good reviews, and went online to read reviews and check out the menu. After about a week of pestering my wife about going here, we finally got the opportunity about two weeks ago. We had a very solid meal, and I am looking forward to coming back here again, to try out some different things If memory serves correct, the drink menu had mostly all VA beers and wine. I don't think there was any liquor, but thats OK with me, because i usually always go for wine or beer with my meal. For this meal, I went with beer, because the menu seemed perfect for complimenting it with a great beer. I wouldn't recommend taking a vegetarian here. This menu was packed full of meat (especially pork), but again, no issues with that here. Service was good throughout the night, and the atmosphere in the restaurant is very relaxed. Also the chef came out at the end of the meal, to ask us how it was, and that always earns points in my book. My appetizer was my favorite dish of the night. Pancakes with pure maple syrup, bacon, foie gras, and a fried egg. Delicious! Breakfast with foie gras for dinner, yes please! I loved this dish. My entree was the pork belly, which was one of the biggest pieces of pork belly I have ever seen. I've ordered pork belly dishes in the past, but usually it's been prepared in smaller portions. This was like a pork belly porterhouse. It was very good, but I think it was just slightly too crispy. It was a bit difficult to cut, but the flavor was great! Also, it was served with potatoes, which make this a very hearty dish. I think I would have preferred something a little lighter on the side, but it may have been my own fault for ordering such a filling appetizer. Despite these very minor issues, I enjoyed the dish. We had some ham fritters on the side as well, which I wasn't overly impressed with, but they weren't bad. My wife had a beef tenderloin (I think, I only had one bite, because of my huge portions), and she was satisfied with hers, and it looked like it was cooked perfectly. I really can't wait to come back here!

Wife and I went here for restaurant week, and ordered almost the exact same stuff as Erikka C. I agree with all of her observations--the meatballs were insanely good, the other (largely bacon-themed) dishes were tasty too. Decor was cute, wait staff was *very* helpful (though we were there early, so they didn't have much to do). I'm giving Brookville only 3 stars however, because the portions were small. They weren't just "not big"--they were small, as if the restaurant took pride in it. We were on a diet so it worked for us. If you're ok with small portions then Brookville is really more like 4 or 5 stars in terms of taste, presentation, decor, ambiance and service.

hands down, without a doubt the best restaurant in Charlottesville. better than the Local, better than Mas, better than Continental Divide, better than Orzo, Zinc, anything you can throw at me. really tempted to go through and scale every other 5-star review down, but i won't. PSA: the pork belly sliders are huge and come two sliders to a serving. do not let the menu's singular description or the moderate price fool you-- if you intend to finish this, you best come aggressive. each slider houses two massive slabs of pork on a soft, brioche-like roll and is topped with lightly pickled vegetables. it is an experience. burger is solid, and i mean that literally. 11 ounces of local beef, stuffed with gouda and topped with caramelized (balsamic?) onions, bacon, and arugula. do not, DO NOT forget to try the bacon chocolate chip cookie. prices aren't low, but the amazing quality and quantity of food makes this place a steal. it is a shame that this restaurant is not packed to the brim. with food and service like this, there should never be an empty seat in the house.

My husband and I were in town for a work occasion for him and decided to try a new place for dinner. He asked me to choose and, based on Yelp, I chose Brookville. If I were writing this based solely on my experience, I would give it two stars. His meal, however, was very good, so I'm giving it three. I felt the service was a step behind at every turn. The folks were friendly, but slow. After we ordered, our waiter returned to say they were out of the lamb appetizer that I wanted. Can't quite figure that one, since we had no trouble getting a table at the last minute and the place was half-full. I chose another dish, the grits with ham, and it was served so cold I sent it back. My husband had the spaetzle and the pork belly--both were very good. I had the truffled mashed potatoes, which were very tasty, but not quite enough for a full meal after the appetizer disappointment. We shared a wonderful bottle of the Chester Ridge Cabernet Franc, which we liked so much we got another bottle at a different place the next evening. With all the great choices Charlottesville has to offer, I would likely not return to Brookville. Great idea to support the local economy with using vendors within one hundred miles, but in my opinion it fell short.

All I have to say is: I LOVE THIS PLACE! Hands down, my favorite restaurant!

After checking out their daily menus on line off and on for a sew weeks, I decided to drive over to Charlottesville and try Brookville. Its not easy to find, wedged, as it is, on the end corner of the mall and up a flight, but its worth it. I have to admit, the menu the night I was there didnt excite me as much as other menus I had seen for other days, so I decided to try the sampling menu: Five courses plus an amuse for about $50. Good price considering it provided a leisurely evening and plenty of food. All of the courses were presented beautifully. My main entree (a wonderful pork chop that exploded with flavor) was cooked to perfection and the chocolate/nut/bacon cookie was a work of art. A yellow tomato "Sammie" - a finger sandwich - was prepared simply, allowing for the tomato to speak for itself. The devilled eggs with bacon were small, but the flavor was concentrated and unique. As great as these were - and they were GREAT - I was not terribly impressed with the amuse - a beautifully rare strip of beef rolled around greens that somehow lacked flavor. A touch of basalmic, a dash of wasabi, a shake of sea salt - something. The staff was very attentive, but not intrusive. The atmosphere was charming. Even the eclectic music added to the ambience. I would highly recommend the sampling menu for a leisurely evening with friends, old or new.

Wonderful Caesar salad, soft shell crab and saddle of lamb entrees excellent. We are 60 ish and passing thru from NJ. My husband is an excellent cook and rarely does a restaurant best his skills. Brookville's Brit did!

I had such high expectations and couldn't wait to try this new restaurant and was bitterly disappointed mostly by the poor service. I walked up the stairs and really liked the ambience and a few minutes later a flustered dude in a sweaty polo shirt, shorts and converse sneakers greeted me and seated me. After waiting a very long time for the waiter/waitress he came back without introducing himself and asked if I had any questions about the menu. He recommended the pork belly/tenderloin with applesauce and spring onions which I ordered for $26. The small portion of meat was good, bit salty, but well cooked and tender/moist. Sadly there was barely a smear of the applesauce and only a bit of the onions amid a small mess of greens piled on top of the meat. I was still hungry yet no one asked how I was enjoying my meal and I didn't have the opportunity to order any additional food. He eventually came back and then took my cleared plate without a word. After staring at the wall another 10 mins he finally returned to ask if I was interested in any dessert. I was so hungry and angry I just asked for the check and left. He claimed they were "very busy" tonite but the bar was mostly empty and didn't look too busy to me. My first and last visit to this place.

OK- we must have hit Brookville on an off night. I've read all the reviews and everyone seems to love this place but I can't say I was impressed at all. We went in on a Tuesday evening and sat at the bar for dinner. There were two staff people who were mostly invisible and we were the only ones in the bar area. There were a few parties in the dining room so they got most of the attention - I'm fine with that, no problem. But between the 150 watt lighting in the bar area and being the only ones there and the every fifteen minutes of seeing anyone from the restaurant pass by, it sort of felt like we had slipped into someone's house and were sitting there waiting for them to come home. Definitely not a welcoming experience. In fact, when we arrived at the top of the steps (Brookville is on the 2nd floor) there were two other parties waiting for tables and apparently hadn't seen anyone either. We all started joking that we had FINALLY all arrived and could now sit down. Or seat ourselves. Eventually, the manager came out and sat those parties. We sat down at the bar. It felt like we and the others were annoying distractions to something important that was going on elsewhere in the kitchen rather than diners in an upscale restaurant. On to the food / Wine. It may be just me, but if you'rea restaurant with the kind of upscale food that Brookville offers, a wine list longer than 8 bottles would be an important thing to have. Again, just me. The selection was abysmal. They had three red wines by the glass, one of which they were out of so choice is down to two. A Cab Franc and a Cote Du Rhone. Neither very good. Disappointing. The food on the menu sounds delicious and when plated/presented looks very nice. My wife ordered the Lamb Bolognese spaghetti which she liked. I ordered the Double Cut Pork Chop with chantrelle mushrooms. It looked truly delicious but immediately failed to deliver. The mushrooms were mushy and drenched in a sauce that I couldn't identify but tasted like a soy sauce / sugar concoction. Way, way, way too sweet. Like candy coated foam rubber. Nothing savory about it which is what I expect with a pork/mushroom combo. The pork chop was over done and tough. Not sure if it was the cut or the cooking or both but I won't order that again. Lest anyone think I'm just a negative bastard, I really don't want to slam this place. It's been thru so many incarnations and it's a really cool space that SHOULD do well if promoted better and run well. The promotion is something I can't comment on - haven't seen a lot of marketing and it IS hard to find/ remember since it's upstairs and off the main part of the Mall. But the ambience (lighting! please turn down the interrogation lighting in the bar area!) and the food left a LOT to be desired. We eat out 3 times a week in C'Ville and would love to have another great option in Brookville but I can recommend it at this point. There are too many other restaurants at this price point and who offer similar fare that execute much better and far more consistently. (Maya, Camino, The Local, La Tavola just to name a few) We might try this place again if friends want to go but it's 0 for 1 in our book at the moment. Sorry to bring everyone down.

Yum! My mother and I went here for brunch last Sunday and really enjoyed it. A couple of drawbacks though. 1. Limited outdoor seating. There were literally four tables outside, each with just four seats. 2. The stairs. When you arrive and if you want to go to the bathroom, you have to climb a VERY steep flight of stairs. 3. The service. I think this probably has something to do with #2, but the service was incredibly slow. I saw how not-busy they were inside and it still took two hours to get brunch (without drinks, just one plate apiece). Most of that waiting was on someone to take or order or bring the check. That being said, the food was excellent! I had the soft scrambled eggs on toast with bacon and my mother had the french toast. They were both simple, well-made, and delicious. The price was relatively fair (about $25 for two). The cocktails looked very good (they have Bloody Mary's) but we didn't try them this time. I imagine the service would have been just right for an extended dinner. I hope to come back and try that soon.

Brookville is on my top five list when anyone asks me where to eat in Charlottesville. You cannot find a restaurant that better embraces the Cville food scene. I'm partly writing this review in response to some of the negative reviews posted - if you don't like Brookville then you are in the wrong place. I have never seen a restaurant more committed to serving local. There are so many restaurants out there that purchase a few of their ingredients locally and then play up the farm-to-table trend. Not so at Brookville - except for some basic ingredients like salt and flour, everything is local. For me, each visit is exciting because it's a new restaurant every time. I go to purchase the concept, to experience a great staff, and to support a family-owned business that really believes in a vision and sticks to it. But enough about local and other concepts talked about too frequently... the food here rocks! The Big Fat Pancake is a toasty, buttery crust that barely holds its delicious batter inside. Anything sandwich-like, from bbq sliders to shortwrip wraps is a perfect balance of crisp and chew/savory and sweet/rich and bright. And the biscuits are the best I've ever had in my life. Get in this place. If there's one thing to finish on, it's Brookville's ability to balance several apparently opposing ideas. It's upscale-casual. It's meticulous-downhome. It's local without pretension. It's the way you want to cook at home, they just do it right!
(5)Lori M.
The food provided at Brookville is all about the table to farm concept. As a result the menu is based upon what is in season. We had "ramps", which are onions and they were out-of-this world. However the rest of the menu consisted of pork and items with fried eggs on them. To be fair, we ate there in early, early spring (4/16/15) and the menu seemed rather limited. Yet I ordered a pork belly dish that I normally would never touch and enjoyed throughly. We had wine from Kings vineyard in Crozet, and between the ramps and the pork belly, enjoyed bacon flavored popcorn. My spouse had fried chicken and waffles, which included fresh spring lettuce, it too was terrific. The restaurant is located upstairs over another restaurant. It has many windows overlooking the downtown pedestrian mall. We watched the comings and goings at the Omni and the cast of characters strolling down the hill on the first warm spring day. It was a lovely meal.

Do you know how hard it is to find a brunch spot with KILLER bloody marys? Extremely. I was so surprised by the bloody marys at Brookville, I think they are better than any bloody mary I've had in NYC! I feel like I will be going here every weekend, probably not to eat (since it's on the pricier side) but definitely to get my dose. Onto the food, me and my boyfriend split a fried chicken and waffles dish ($25) and a watermelon feta salad. The food was super tasty and 1 dish had us super full. The waffles are so fluffy and flavorful and the chicken perfectly crispy!
(4)Stothe H.
Not a traditional brunch experience. Limited choices and aiming at higher end with fancier plates.
(2)Caro G.
While the $4.00 cup of decaf with a ton of coffee grinds at the bottom (and somehow only one packet of stevia left in the entire restaurant?) was not my favorite, the goat cheese and shiitake frittata was pretty good. The waitress was helpful and attentive. My friend had the pancake sandwich and though I don't remember what my other two friends had, I remember their happy faces while eating the dishes. :) FYI, if you have seen True Detective, my friend correctly pointed out that the weird ceiling art in the bathroom is very reminiscent of the freaky pieces of art hung in that show.

3.5 stars Love the bacon flavored popcorn they provide on the table...so good. I ordered the biscuit with goat cheese and raspberry jam...it was huge...and delicious, but I thought it needed more jam. Tasso grits with poached egg....so good! Would order again. Cottage Pie, beef and potatoes ...wish it had some veggies in it. Bacon Chocolate chip cookie...served piping hot...so good. Didn't really taste the bacon flavor...who cares...it was delicious.

Went there for dinner on a Wednesday night. No problem at all walking in and getting a table. We started with the pork rillettes, served with cornichons, mustard and toasted French bread. Splendid! While we could have used more toast (since we were intent on eating every last bite), as bread was also brought to the table at the same time, we merely switched to that after the toast was gone. I have no doubt that the friendly, helpful and fun server would have gotten us more toast, had we asked, but we were fine finishing with fresh bread. For main courses, I had a perfectly cooked medium rare steak served with potato salad that my date could not stop stealing from me. It had a tiny bit of kick to it. Perhaps some cayenne? At any rate, it was excellent. My date had pork two ways. I only tried a bit of the meat myself (served with micro greens and an apple reduction of some sort), but it was amazingly moist. Astonishingly moist. Made me wonder if it wasn't cooked sous vide and finished on the grill. We both agreed that the best part of the meal was how simple it was. Simple food which doesn't rely on showy plating with unnecessary extras or heavy sauces is incredibly difficult to pull off. Any mistakes become glaringly obvious. Here, the food was allowed to speak for itself. Thank heavens. The meats were perfectly cooked. The sides supported them without overpowering, each a simple study in how to make something familiar just a little better than you've ever had it before. There is also a good beer list and plenty to choose from in affordable, drinkable wines by the glass (as well as by the bottle). The food, too, was very affordable. Main courses topped out at $15. Apps around $8 or so. Since they source locally, it's a limited menu that changes based upon availability. And the proof is on the plate that it makes a difference. One of the best dinners we have had in quite some time. We'll certainly be back!

perhaps I had too high of an expectation? brookville's staff were extremely nice and I love that they source 95% of their ingredients locally, but my dining experience here was merely mediocre. their brunch menu was not very extensive and bacon seemed to be a big part of almost every item (I can't complain about that, but my pescatarian mother was unhappy). I thought my mom's french toast was delicious -- tangy, sweet sauce that seemed to be homemade, generous amount of peach slices and the bread was served warm -- but my "brook griddle", or the maple bacon pancake and baked egg sandwich was left much to be desired. The overall portion was very big, but my pancake was not moist enough (no maple syrup was provided as some were used to cook it), there was not enough bacon and the egg was rather bland. For a hefty brunch price tag for $14, I expected more. The morning coffee was extremely bland as well, perhaps because they only started brewing it when we arrived at the restaurant at 11am.

When deciding where to meet a friend in Charlottesville who had never been to Virginia before, I thought I had to take them to a place that was quintessential to the food scene in this region. Having visited Brookville before, I knew that: a) Everything is 100 percent locally sourced. b) Everything has a touch of bacon or pork. c) Ambiance would be perfect as it is on higher level than the rest of the Downtown Mall with a balance of swanky (luxe leather chairs) and country (burlap tableclothes). This re-visit for me was a bit of a letdown compared to when I visited as a newcomer to the area, as I now see similar dishes and themes in other restaurants with better service. Last time, we had a large group with a lot of preferences, so I gave the server the benefit of the doubt. But I again had spotty service with a much smaller and easier to please group. I arrived before my friends but didn't get a drink menu from the hostess, so I sat for a while with just water until I flagged her down again. Then, our server (granted, she was new and being shadowed) didn't know what beers were on draft and was uncertain about the ingredients in menu items. She did say this all with a smile and went to try to find out answers to our questions. I can get over all of this if the food is worth it. But this time, it didn't blow me away. The bacon popcorn didn't have as much flavor as I remembered. My friend's Southern Comfort Grilled Cheese had burnt bread. Her boyfriend didn't get the salad that was supposed to come as a side for the Pork Belly. And I didn't get a soup spoon for my Squash Soup, so I ate it awkwardly with a tiny dessert spoon that was on the table. I also thought the Slow-Cooked Egg on my Breakfast (Bacon) Salad was more like a fried egg, whereas I expected a poached, more yolky egg. (Although, I have to say the overall flavors of the soup and the salad were spot-on. I especially enjoyed the house-made, zippy ranch dressing.) What remained the star of the show: That Yelp Check-In offer for a fresh-baked Bacon-Chocolate Chip Cookie. Sooooo melty, gooey and decadent. Perfect end to the meal.

Had brunch with my wife today. They brought complementary corn bread to the table while we enjoyed our Bloody Mary's. The waitress was delightful and attentive. The wait for our meals seemed longer than most restaurants but we were in no big hurry. We spent a leisurely 90 minutes enjoying the breakfast salad followed by the chicken and waffle dish. Both were very Good. We received a complementary bacon chocolate chip cookie for checking in on Yelp and had coffee and tea to accompany it. Warm, gooey and delicious. All in all, very enjoyable brunch experience. We'll be back.

Upstairs and upscale, Brookeville provides locally sources fare with polish and class. Due to the price point, not an everyday option, but a recent lunch left me full and happy. I enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich, with a small side salad, and the sandwich was big enough to simply eat with a fork and knife. It wasn't very busy on a Sunday at 1:00pm the say after Foxfield. Definitely enjoyed the bacon chocolate chip cookie when I checked in on Yelp! Didn't quite get the bacon flavor, but good nonetheless. Good service, mason jar water glasses and a few local craft beers on tap helped make this a great option. My friends enjoyed both the chicken and waffle and the BEC (bacon/egg/cheese), but the hangover cure sounded excellent too. I will most certainly return and Brookeville is clearly another great option on the walking mall.

Fried chicken and waffles! Pretty much the only reason my bf chose this place for dinner. It's located at the end of the downtown strip next to Mudhouse coffee shop. You walk up a narrow and tall staircase to an upstairs restaurant with a very homey rustic feel to it. We ordered the fried chicken and waffles, obviously, and an apple chive salad to share. The chicken was delicious and the use of dark meat is so on point. Slightly disappointed in the fact that the waffle was kind of soggy from the heat of the chicken and there was only the slightest drizzle of the sriracha like syrup. It was still good but not the best we've had. The apple salad was amazinggggggg even though it was such a simple dish. Apples, chives, mint, cilantro, and a mustard vinaigrette. It was tangy, sweet, and refreshing - and also a ridiculously good source of fiber because there were like 100 Apple slices in the dish! We also got a free bacon chocolate chip cookie for dessert because we checked in on yelp (yay go yelp!) which was alright. It was warm and gooey but no taste of bacon. Overall a great restaurant and definitely charming.

Review based solely on a happy hour, where I tried a lot of little bites. Everything was delicious - but the pork belly was by far my favorite. The servers were nice and I'd definitely return

Excellent contemporary American cuisine, and good local brew to boot. My wife and I got two small plates and one large plate to share. I would take a picture of the food if it was not all gone already. We got and enjoyed: broccoli soup, buffalo fried broccoli with blue cheese dressing, and shiitake mushroom ragout. Definitely would try this chic spot on the firestorm mall for dinner or lunch. Shalom, Ryan

This place is pants button-popping amazing! Firstly, the portions are pretty large and very satisfying. I've eaten here twice now on visits to Charlottesville, and I have always had leftover entrees. I've had the burger and my husband had the chicken and waffles. I can't say much about the c&w since he ate all of it before I could try any, but the burger was awesome and huge. Like seriously huge. There was thick gouda stuffed in that burger! I could only eat half of it. I've also had their brunch, which was equally satisfying and hearty portions. I agree with the other customers about the bacon chocolate chip cookies - definitely get them. Even if you're too full to eat them at the restaurant, you can take them home for a yummy snack later. Also cool - you can get beer(s) for the chef. I like that since you don't always get to tell the chef yourself how much you enjoyed your meal, so I think that's a nice was to say thanks and we'll be back.

I'm a fan. I would live to try everything and come back for dinner. We came here for brunch with a large group of 11. The server was fantastic. Orders were fast. And everyone enjoyed the food. I had the brookville bfast platter. My bacon was amazing. And the grits were way better than "moms". My only brunch objection is no jelly or fresh squeezed oj. It's almost perfect. Ended with the warm chocolate chip and bacon cookie. Mmmmmm. Healthy starts tomorrow. :).

Place and food was great going down but not coming back up. My wife had the grilled chicken and was extremely sick shortly afterwards.

Behind Mas and Petit Pois, this might be my favorite dinner spot in Charlottesville. The dishes are innovative, the dining area is nice but not stuffy, and "all plates are 90-99% sourced within 100 miles." If Brookville had a personal ad, it would read "must love pork." The popcorn to start is flavored with bacon, many of the drink specials are bacon-infused, most of the appetizers and entrees feature pig of some kind, and you can even get a *bacon chocolate chip cookie*. To list some of my favorite dishes (ironically not pork-heavy): *the asparagus and leek soup* - served warm; a simple, creamy soup with a perfect balance of flavors *the brookville burger* - humungous, so come hungry; the bacon marmalade makes the dish *organic butcher's chicken n' waffles* - an indulgent classic done well; it's impossible not to love fried chicken and a warm waffle smothered in maple syrup. You pretty much can't go wrong with the food here. And, the best part about the whole Brookville experience is that they provide you with crayons to draw on the paper table covers. You can channel your inner artist while enjoying a juicy slab of local pork. Perfection!

I love the decor and the overall philosophy of this restaurant, but execution was inconsistent. Our cookies were raw in the middle, and our food took a really long time. My burger was undercooked. Service was friendly. Also, for an organization focused on sustainability and local products, serving sizes that are 4 to 6 times recommended portions creates lots of waste. It feels irresponsible and inconsistent with their overall philosophy.

First order of business: if Blake is working the night you go, ask for him. I've only been once, and there may be other waiters as good as him, but this level of excellence is rare so I won't risk it if I don't have to. I have more than seven years of experience as a waiter, from IHOP to the Inn at Little Washington, so when I say this guy is one of the best waiters I've ever had, I do not say that lightly. Anywho. Seriously, get Tom Sietsema to write about this guy. For the high quality and impressive deliciousness of what they serve the prices are great. To really get a taste of what Brookville is about and to forgo the laborious process of having to actually pick an item off the menu we went with the 3 course tasting menu, for $36 per person, and a beer each. Appetizer course was lightly fried oysters with a housemade tartar sauce. The oysters themselves were fresh and the breading had just the right spices. It became apparent that that the oyster, though wonderful, were simply a vehicle for the distilled angel tears that they tried to pass as "tartar sauce." It was definitely a great start. The main course was chicken over cheese grits, collard greens and gravy. Neither my sister or I would have picked this dish off the menu beforehand, and at first we were wary about collard greens. We were rapidly converted after a few bites, however; the flavors meshes wonderfully together. The chicken was fresh and had been cooked just enough for what it was served with. This dish even inspired an Ode to Collared Greens written upon the paper tablecloth (which graces each table at Brookville, complete with crayons and colored pencils. Don't worry, it's somehow still classy). The dessert... oh dear Lord Jesus above, the dessert. I don't even remember what it was called, but Blake new all about it when I asked. It was some kind of thrice-blessed matrimony of french toast and creme brule that had gotten engaged with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The first two courses sent to the sky, and this dish turned out to be St. Peter ushering us into Food Heaven.

Two friends and I came here for brunch. It is extremely fresh- let me tell you. I did feel like I was on an episode of man vs. food though. The portion sizes are HUGE. My party of 3 adults could have split one entree for brunch. I got the BFP (Big Fluffin Pancakes) while my two other friends got the Chicken and Waffles and the Sausage breakfast sandwich. The cornbread that they bring at the beginning is amazing. The service was great- super attentive. The ambience and setting is very cute and refreshing. Will definitely go back.

They had room available for a party of 8 for Sunday brunch. Great location right on the C'ville downtown mall with the restuarant located upstairs for great view. Clean and nice decor. Server greeted us and brought water right away. Service was slow throughout the entire meal from drinks to entrees. Food was solid. They served southern meal using the most freshest ingredients. Ordered fried chicken w waffles with some type of hot sauce that was amazing. Brookville is a solid restaurant. Nice atmosphere and food, improving the service would make the overall experience better.

A great find in downtown Charlottesville. Tucked into a building at one end of the pedestrian mall, across from the skating rink, Brookville serves up creative, locally sourced dishes (most ingredients come from farms and purveyers within 100 miles of the restaurant. It was dinner time, but we had delicious, large, southern biscuits as appetizers, followed by the local, seasonal vegetable ragout over grits - this was so filling, with chunks of carrots and other root vegetables on tasty grits with cheese. There are bookcases filled with wonderful cookbooks to browse through as you wait for your dinner, or you can watch the skaters across the way in the old brick skating rink. We bought the Chef a beer - it's on the menu!

Lovely setting and delicious farm-to-table cuisine. This one is on our Cville favorites list. The staff is very nice and knowledgable.

I really wanted to like this place. I like the concept. I would probably would have liked to have tried it again before doing a review but I don't know when I would be back in C'ville again on an overnight trip. First the good - Service was excellent. The craft beer selection was decent and the cocktail menu looked interesting (but pricey). The bacon popcorn mentioned by others was good but not even close to the bacon popcorn at the Loveless Cafe (outside of Nashville TN). The bacon chocolate chip cookie is pure heaven and served warm. Now the bad - The menu on this particular night did not match anything I had seen online. The most "substantial" (and most expensive) dish this particular night was basically pork BBQ on grits. After spending $30 (total), I didn't really leave feeling full. The dish was good, but not filling nor was it worth $16. It was by no means, out of this world. If you are a hungry man, I recommend you verify the menu before going. If you like high-priced and/or lighter fare, you may be ok here.

Love How Everything Is Local And Fresh With An Ever Changing Menu Keeps Everything Interesting. I Like The Location And Atmosphere, Only Wish People Left The Tip For RSVP But Eating At The Bar Ain't Too Bad. Still Deciding On What To Order! But Got Complimentary Popcorn! Well The Food We All Ordered Came Quickly I Originally Ordered The Roasted Chicken But Before The Bartender Placed The Orders I Changed My Mind After Viewing The Pics Of Their Famous Chicken And Bacon Waffle. My Family Also Ordered The Special Bologna Sandwich And The Ham Alfredo Pasta Dishes And Let Me Tell You The Presentation Of This Dishes Were Eye Catching, I Took Pictures Of Course To Include In My Review To Enjoy! Also They Have Daily Drink Specials On A Blackboard Near The Windows Overlooking Main Street, I Really The Dessert Which Is A Must BACON CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE Fresh Out The Oven All Foods Made To Order Which Is Fantastic Because You Can Taste The Difference Especially Here! Def Plan On Coming Again And Making A RSVP!

Had the $22 burger here. If you're a burger fan, this is a must try. Have it cooked med rare and don't be afraid of it looking raw. It's not, and very delicious. Restaurant was empty when I came came, but has a home like atmosphere.
(5)Jonas S.
So torn on Brookville. It has a lot going for it. Space is great, location is great, and food generally tastes really good. Some cons exist, however. It's usually pretty dead in there and it kills the ambiance, say compared to Red Pump. Also, the menu is often just bizarre and limited. The $25 burger, while massive, is just an obscene price for DC, let alone Cville. Speaking of the menu, they don't bother to update the website so don't plan a visit based on seeing something you like on there. A minor annoyance, but come on if you can't update it just don't have it on there. All that said, again, the food is always quite good.

This review is not for the food, which I have not been able to try. Rather, this is for the staff. I have tried to eat at this restaurant twice, both times turned away in a very rude manner. Staff here is extremely passive. I understand that tables may be full, and would be happy to wait, but not if I am treated disrespectfully.

Stopped here as a break during a long trip to Virginia Beach. The restaurant is located on a street that has been closed to traffic and is now an open mall with all kinds of interesting shops and restaurants. The restaurant is upstairs, so we got to sit by the windows and watch the crowds walking by below. A really nice wood and brick interior with a great bar. The owner has a bookshelf full of books about food, so our kids (8 and 11) had fun looking through them. They also got to do some chalk drawing on a chalkboard. We were there for brunch. The kids got the Big Fat Pancake (BFP), my son even got his with bacon in it, which he loved. They only ate about half of the pancakes, so we should have just gotten one and split it. Much of the food was from the local farmer's market that morning. Great service that was friendly, quick and very helpful. We will be back again for sure!

My husband and I went with another couple for restaurant week. I was expecting great things and brookville ended up being so-so. We arrived a little early for our reservation and wanted to sit at the bar and have a cocktail. The cocktails were interesting and delicious. The bartender talked to us about the cocktails and their ingedients. We all enjoyed our drinks very much! We sat down and ordered our meals. To start, two of us had the watermelon and feta salad. I had a bite and it was good. Our friend and I got the tomato salad. The tomatoes were fresh and delicious but that was pretty much it, I was eating three slices of tomato with some cheese with very little flavor sprinkled on it. The entrees were the highlight! I had the chicken with panzanella salad. I was a little wary because it had so many onions! It was delicious! The chicken was perfectly cooked and fantastic! Other entrees were pork chops- grilled and wonderful with excellent potato salad. The mushrooms and grits were also enjoyed. Desserts :( the peach ice cream had no real peach flavor and the peach on the side wasn't too peachy either. The bacon chocolate chip cookie was a good cookie but no bacon flavor. The wine list has all local wines which I like but the bottles are pretty expensive and they were out of the more reasonably priced ($40) bottles. Our waitress did give us a higher priced bottle for the lower price which was a good touch.

The Brookville is a wonderful restaurant with really nice folks running it with a Chef that knows what he is doing. A thoughtful menu cooked to perfection. My wife and I are both cooks from the DC area and we rate the Brookville 5 stars with room to spare. If your having dinner in Charlottesville VA, the Brookville should be at the top of your list.
(5)Bob B.
This was a tremendous dining experience ! The twist on a classic meatball and Chicken & Waffles was fabulous! Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area ! If you have a traditional palate you might miss out on the genius that is this chef !!
(5)Sara M.
Brookville seemed like a nice place a family brunch - the brunch menu is short but has some interesting dishes with locally-sourced ingredients. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. The dining room is upstairs in an older building with fascinating architectural features in the exposed brick and wood elements. On a sunny day, it's a cheerful, airy, homey place to eat. Between the four of us, we tried several things from the day's menu (which looks like it rotates, so you may or may not see these dishes when you visit). My overall take was that the food was good, but not excellent or special. The grits were served with "slow-cooked" eggs, which were basically indistinguishable from a soft-boiled egg in texture/flavor. I didn't find the grits particularly flavorful or inspiring - I cook grits and eggs at home and these weren't much different. The asparagus puree was a nice touch, and perhaps the dish could've used more of it. The soft-shelled crab sandwich had a really nicely cooked crab, but otherwise wasn't very interesting. The bacon chocolate chip cookie was a gooey fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie... and none of us really tasted any bacon. All of our dishes were solid, but nothing that lived up to our excitement over the menu (which makes everything sound really unique). The menu put me off a little with fine print at the bottom saying that they'd "politely decline any changes or modifications." Don't get me wrong - I know that talented chefs put a lot of thought into the flavor profiles of their dishes and don't enjoy having picky diners who want to change a zillion little things. But this also may make things difficult for diners with a very real food allergy or other limitation. Also, it made me too uncomfortable to order the dish I really wanted to try, because I wanted to ask for the syrup on the side (the horror!). The menu also had lots of acronyms that turned out to be the initials of the farms they sourced the ingredients from, which was sort of pretentious (and confusing, until we asked about some of them). I'd be interested in trying Brookville for another meal, because their other menus sound interesting. But I'm a little hesitant, because the brunch menu sounded interesting... but didn't meet expectations.

After giving this place two chances (dinner and brunch), I'm going to have to go ahead and give it two stars which is probably one point five more stars than it deserves. The menu is extremely overpriced for the quality of food they serve. They have a farm to table, locally sourced food concept which is great in theory, but they must be sourcing their food from golden chicken farms and pampered pigs for their overly priced eggs and bacon. We ordered OJ and coffee to drink which are difficult brunch items to mess up, but the only thing orange about the juice was the color. They brought us orange tang with ice (so we wouldn't notice it was neither fresh nor real juice) and french pressed coffee that tasted like day old Foldgers. The menu was impossible to understand, it had items like "BFP" and "Hand Pies" which were pancakes and toaster strudels. Another example of this restaurant trying too hard: they renamed the Bloody Mary to the "Bloody Harry" which makes no sense and sounds utterly unappetizing. The atmosphere was awkward both times we tried this place. The first time my husband and I were the only patrons in the restaurant and it was so quiet that the entire wait staff (who hovered 10 feet from our table whispering at the bar) could hear every word of our conversation and we felt trapped, and we felt more trapped when we got the menu and saw the $20 cheeseburger. Moral of the story is that Brookville suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. The restaurant is trying too hard to be a chic, hipster Brooklyn hang out, but their food is not very good and overpriced, the atmosphere is odd at best. This is just a classic case of trying too hard.

My husband and I stopped here for lunch on a recent trip to Cville. We were totally wowed! Our food was amazingly fresh. My grilled chicken sandwich was great...delicious fresh bread, chicken cooked perfectly and the best homegrown summer tomatoes imaginable. My husband had a fried chicken sandwich and was equally impressed. They also served a delicious, dark roast coffee from a French press with heavy cream on the side. Superb. We were seated in front of a huge window overlooking the mall, a great spot for people-watching. The waitstaff was incredibly attentive and very friendly. This was a great dining experience. Don't miss this spot!
(5)Alexander C.
This is actually a cool little place. It was probably the best meal I had in CVille. I had the watermelon salad and it was fresh and delicious followed by the "famous" chicken and waffles. Great service and good drinks.
(4)Jennifer T.
Absolutely loved our meal & service, from start to finish. The menu is now 100% local (including beer, wine & spirits). Expertly prepared, great presentation, completely delish. Though the menu changes, we had the tostada, potato soup, and grilled cheese to start, split the famous chicken and waffles as our main, and wrapped things up with a bacon chocolate chip cookie and apple crumble. Would recommend all of them highly. YUM.
(5)Tee D.
A friend who went to UVA recommended this restaurant to me. My group of three was told we had to wait 30 minutes for a table, but we ended up having to wait 1h 15m! Don't most restaurants overestimate the wait time? We were pretty hangry by the time we got our table, but at least our waitress appeased us by giving us a grilled cheese as appetizer on the house. It was pretty great! Melty cheese and crunchy, buttery bread. For the main course, my friends ordered the pork belly while I opted for the chicken and waffle. My friends said the pork belly was heavenly, but the sauce didn't go well with the pork belly. The chicken and waffle was delicious- I'd recommend it. We received an order of the infamous chocolate chip bacon cookie because it came free with a Yelp checkin. Other reviewers mentioned it came with a side of milk, but we didn't get any. It was warmed up, so it was hot and gooey. I couldn't taste the bacon though. It was delicious regardless. Overall, the food and ambience got 4 stars each. Had it not been the longer-than-what-was-told wait, my party would've been completely satisfied.
(3)Molly M.
Thoroughly disappointed. The service was very slow and in attentive. It seemed like our waiter was new, which would be fine, except for the little attention he paid us. It also took about an hour for our dinner to be served. This is certainly not the waiter's fault, but we were never given any updates on our food. The cheese and ham fritters were good and so were the grilled cheese snack. BUt you can't really mess up a grilled cheese. Do not order the fettuccini unless you are barely hungry. The portion is laughably small. The pasta was on the entree menu and that is basically fraud. I came with a party of 9 and three of us ordered the burger at diff temperatures and we all thought it was dry. The burger has a lot of potential but it failed. Also I ordered medium and it barely had any pink. Admittedly I didn't complain so they didn't have the opportunity to correct it, but I didn't Want to wait another 45 min. Other guest had the chicken and waffles and the pork sandwich and were satisfied. I've never been to Charlottesville but I'm sure there are better places here.
(1)Katie D.
Sorry yelp, but I can't agree. We were not impressed with the food here. I am huge fan of local sourcing, but the dishes we ordered were less than impressive. I had the risotto bloganaise and it was tasteless! My bf had the ham and cheese sandwich and it was so salty he couldn't finish it. Our other friend had the burger and had no complaints. So if you're checking this place out - get the burger?
(2)Nikolaus S.
My wife and I stopped here for lunch on our first time into Charlottesville. It's located in a cozy corner at the end of the Main St. promenade. My wife had the fried chicken and loved it, though the fry batter was quite salty. I had the brisket sandwich and -- as a sandwich -- it was fantastic -- perhaps a bit heavy on the aioli sauce. It was so loaded with brisket that numerous pieces fell out and for some reason I wasn't quite enamored by the individual slices. Great selection of interesting local wines and beers. Our dessert cookie was amazing.
(4)Bri J.
Such a nice inventive brunch menu. It was a perfect little stop before heading out. Bloody Mary had such fresh ingredients with little blue cheese stuffed olives, just the right amount and the food was so delicious and presentation was immaculate!
(4)Carrie C.
Tonight got off to a little bit of a rocky start, they ran out of all of the food I ordered (entree and small plates) and the beer I ordered was too frozen to serve. But the waitress was so sweet and accommodating, and made other great recommendations. It was our first visit, and we heard such great things before coming, so we were determined to keep an open mind, despite the rough beginning. The food that we ended up with was delicious, and the beer the waitress recommended was great as well. When the food came out, the person who brought the food told me that my dinner was on the house, a very nice surprise. Then, at the end of the dinner, our sweet waitress brought us 2 delicious, complementary cookies as a nice gesture. We were very impressed by the service and the atmosphere and we will definitely be back!
(4)Matt P.
Based on consistency and quality this is the best restaurant in Charlottesville. The menu options are limited but they change frequently and can be quite inventive. The prices and decor suggest upscale but the waiters wear tie-dye t-shirts and you get crayons to draw on the paper covering the white table clothes so it doesnt take itself too seriously.
(5)Caroline E.
The brunch was beyond excellent!
(4)Mary S.
I came here because of yelp, and I definitely would come again. we had the bloody Mary with bacon and blue cheese olives. Probably the best drink I've ever had. We had the bacon fried egg salad. And bacon maple pancakes sandwich with fried egg and bacon. So good! now we will try the bacon chocolate chip cookies, as I hear they are the best.
(5)Ella L.
Great service. Delicious food. The price points feel a bit high but hey it's Charlottesville where none of the price points make sense. It's great place to spend an evening with friends. The last time we were here they didn't have a table ready in time and set up with with drinks at the bar on the house until it was ready. Service was quick and staff was friendly. Food was basic but delicious.
(4)Cat B.
The brunch was really excellent here. We all enjoyed our brunch cocktails and our different meals. The restaurant itself is quaint but it is easy to miss the door since it's up a flight of stairs off the downtown mall. The bacon chocolate chip cookies are delicious, and it is worth the wait for them to come fresh to the table.
(4)John L.
Came with an appetite for restaurant week. Great ideas, love the local sourcing! (includes VA wine & beer). The food just needed better execution. Was sooooo looking forward to the pork belly. Unfortunately, it was drastically overcooked. Super-dry and flaky. Butternut squash soup was ok. Served with uncooked squash seeds. Unflattering addition to a fairly simple soup. We'll be back for a second round - too many other great reviews to be a one-and-done.
(3)Anita S.
Great find in the downtown pedestrian mall. Wonderful drinks and interesting, delicious food combinations. Will definitely return!
(4)Ellen T.
I really want to like this place, because in sourcing 95% of their food locally, they have set the bar high for a restaurant committed to sustaining its local agricultural community and heightening the appreciation for what's seasonal and regional. I love this about Brookville, but it won't keep me coming back. For the only game in town on the local food scene, I'd expected something a lot better - a greater diversity in produce (or any produce, for that matter, that isn't fried), a greater diversity in flavor, more experimentation with textural elements. Founding Farmers in DC comes to mind as a restaurant that excels in showcasing the best qualities of local food, not just using it. Dishes here are very well cooked, but not inventive enough in terms of flavor, texture, and ingredients. I went last Thursday for dinner with a friend after reading the owner's "public apology" on the restaurant website, in which he promised to deliver more adventurous cuisine in 2015. So there's now a burrito and a tostada on the menu, among a bunch of southern food; the menu felt incohesive to say the least. We tried the buffalo broccoli (OK, but not crispy enough on the frying); the sausage appetizer which, although it was presented rather blandly, sitting in a pool of maple syrup with a swath of mustard, was delicious; the meatballs and grits (rich flavor and well cooked but again, not enough there to keep me interested even after splitting it with my friend); and the apple pie with cheddar crust, which was a bit dry (maybe the wrong type of apple?), served a la mode, not warm enough to be really delicious but warm enough to melt the ice cream which, sadly, was icy and seemed like it had been either poorly made or in the freezer too long. If you like flavors of meat and sugar, then this place is right for you. I gave Brookville another shot after a disappointing restaurant week dinner in 2014, when all the food felt like a one-liner; drenching something in maple syrup and bacon isn't all that exciting after the first bite. The standard southern fare here is good but then again, there are many restaurants that do upscale southern cuisine very well in this town. I really, really like the idea of this place, and the ambience is super charming, but it's not enough to make me want to come back; while I want to show it off to out-of-town friends as a unique charlottesville restaurant for its commitment to locally sourced food, I found it too disappointing in terms of flavor quality. Please keep trying, though, Brookville, because I love your values, and I want you to stick around!

Giving this one 5 stars was easy. Food is so fresh and their baccon popcorn. ..off the hook. Definitely wish we had one of these in Las Vegas
(5)christopher r.
Solid choice for innovative and tasty fine dining in a comfortably casual atmosphere. Who would think to put an egg on a porkchop?! It was fab. The crispy pork belly, carrot dish, ham fritters and wine all surprised. Nothing ordinary here. Supporting local food providers, the no-pressure service, and comfy seat with a view made the whole experience gratifying.

We stumbled on this restaurant last night with our two and four year old boys. We had just arrived in town, it was late and all of the restaurants that looked appropriate for kids were full. The servers here were incredibly understanding, helpful and accommodating - and the food and drink was fantastic. Thanks for a great dinner!
(5)Maggie M.
Had dinner here near the first of the year and ordered the chicken on a waffle. It was amazing! The best fried chicken I have ever had. Everything was perfect. Wait staff was friendly and helpful. DIdn't try the cookie because I was full from dinner. Can't wait to go back.

Wow. We came here because of Yelp--and Yelp rarely guides us wrong. We had the most delicious lunch here. My husband had the fried chicken sandwich--yes with a fried egg on top--and it knocked his socks off it was so good and scrumptious. He asked the waiter how to eat it and they replied, most people start picking it up and eating it, but halfway through end up going after it with a knife and fork. As predicted, that's what he had to do. Messy and amazing. I had some sort of gourmet grilled cheese sandwich with apple on it--I don't see it on the menu now when I look back--but it was also perfect and so good. Then, via Yelp, we got one free bacon chocolate chip cookie, and bought another. And yes, they were totally mindblowing. Don't miss this. Classic place, farm-to-table, locally sourced food. Friendly, attentive and informative staff. It was a quiet, rainy Saturday in October when we were there. They were also holding a tasting event for a large group at the end as we were leaving.

Sea of Salt....I was disappointed in the Yelp review here because it was suppposedly the highest rated place in town. However, everything was wayyy too salty. We got the burger and the mushroom ragu, both of which were simply over salted. I think the reason is that the place loves their bacon (it seems to be the restaurants theme) but then on top they add more salt. It was just too aggressive. It is possible that we went on a day with a bad chef--the menu did seem to indicate that there was a special chef there that night. I will say the decor was awesome, I liked the chill atmosphere and all the exposed brick. I also kind of liked letting out my inner child and drawing on the table in crayon (yes it is promoted there)

I'm impressed! Popcorn popped in bacon fat while I waited for my food. Amazing. Nice selection of local beer and wine. Most everything is locally sourced. The carnitas was fantastic! The bacon chocolate chip cookie left a little something to be desired. Don't get me wrong. It was good. I mean, it was a warm, freshly baked chocolate chip cookie, but I didn't taste bacon. Overall, great experience. I'd definitely come back.

Brookville has plush leather chairs and a unique take on food. It's warm and inviting. Even despite serving you water in mason glass jars. Fun, yes, but kind of heavy and awkward to drink from. The menu changes daily and features a play on the classic southern breakfast foods. Oh, and $5 beer from around the states. They started us off with amuse bouche of bacon deviled eggs (very heavy on the mustard) and these amazing bacon/cheese fritters. I started with a turnip, bacon, and potato soup, which was heavy on the turnip and didn't have enough bacon. Meatballs were tasty and tender but slightly lacking in seasoning. The shrimp and polenta cake actually tasted like crabs! Good thing I like crabs, but unfortunately my bf didn't. The fried chicken thigh was boneless, moist, and part crispy, part soggy. The waffle that the chicken came on was the best part. It was crispy, soft, and melt-in-your-mouth with cuts of bacon that were just as wonderful. They ran out of bacon ice cream for dessert, so I got the toffee chip cookies and milk instead (2 large, hot, scrumptious cookies). There was about 1% toffee and quite a bit more chocolate and the milk came in a too tall wine glass with a too small hole. Awkward. I tried the bacon waffle with cinnamon apples and they just weren't quite as good as it was with the chicken. Service also took a while. The place was not even closed to packed. But I think this is because the chef/owner cooks by himself? (and he came out to greet/thank everyone at one point)

I have been here about five times over the last few years, not enough to be honest. I have always enjoyed it

Came back to Brookville after a long hiatus. We were seated by the window and everything was wonderful. The bacon popcorn to snack on with our drinks was really genius. I had a very well made rye Manhattan. I ordered the 3-course chef's tasting menu. He selected the shitake mushroom crepe which was really fantastic. The entree with the pork chop with the apple puree. I usually avoid ordering pork chops because too often they're dry and too tough. This was not the case here. It was tender and juicy and really flavorful. I asked the chef to choose a beer pairing and he went with the Trader Saison from 3 Notch'd Brewery which is a great local beer that I really like. The dessert was his bacon chocolate chip cookie which was fantastic. My wife had the chicken and waffle which I tried. Unlike my last review, no one would accuse the chicken and waffle of being a small portion. Really great blend of savory, salty, and sweet. Service was wonderful and enthusiastic. Great meal.

Brunch review: seriously great brunch, one of the best in cville and I've had them all. Only two non-local ingredients on list, unbelievable! Daughter had a great time looking thru a collection of cooking/confection books. A warning, the BFP are as large as you can imagine:) Easy to book on Open Table, no wait.

Very nice and modern brunch place. Had the Brookville Burger (which was enormous) and Spiced Iced Coffee. The coffee was really good, couldn't even taste the rum. The burger was awesome, nice taste but expensive ($22). Everything has fried egg on it, which is an A+ in my book. The environment is casual/fancy. You can come semi-dressed up, or casual.

Brookville is a great little place. I visited for the second time on Saturday. To start, I tried their bacon bourbon special cocktail of the night and my boyfriend got the ramps-infused vodka with champagne and orange peel (I think?). My bourbon was excellent, but I really didn't get any bacon flavor out of it. The ramps drink was interesting. It smelled so strongly, but tasted like champagne with a hint of garlic flavor. I wouldn't order it again, but interesting or odd are the only descriptions I can think of. The owner's wife brought out popcorn popped in bacon fat for us to snack on. So salty, but such a good bacon flavor. Our table of four devoured two bowls of this throughout the meal. We shared the sauteed ramp appetizer and the creamed leeks appetizer. The ramps were fine--I tend to find all leafy greens sauteed to taste the same. They were fine, but not a taste I couldn't reproduce at home with leafy greens and garlic. The leeks, however, were awesome. Perfectly creamed and cooked under some fried bread and Edwards country ham. Country ham is too salty for me on its own, but pairing a little bite of it with a large helping of leeks was perfect. Definitely would get it again if on the menu next time. For dinner, two of us got the Brookville burger and two got the chicken and waffles. I didn't try the burgers, but I can't see how bacon ground with sirloin could be bad. The two who got it liked it a lot. As to the chicken and waffles, I had never had that pairing before. It had always seemed like a gross concept to me. But I remember from my first visit the life-altering bacon waffles I had for dessert and decided to try this dish. I can't say I plan on getting chicken and waffles again from anywhere else, but here, they were excellent. The chicken was moist on the inside and crispy on the out. It paired well with the fried egg and the waffles with syrup. My only complaint is that the hot sauce didn't come through as much as I would have liked, so some bites were a little less flavorful than others. Regardless, I cleaned my plate completely. And finally as if we hadn't had enough food, I got the bacon chocolate chip cookies and the others got the bacon waffles with ice cream. I wish I had gotten another waffles. The mixture of the bacon waffle with some syrup, ice cream, and fruit was magic in my mouth. While good, the cookie had bacon flavor in some bites and then overwhelming chocolate on the other. I'm not a huge dessert person, so I was hoping for more bacon and less chocolate (though with bacon or ham in every dish I'd had thus far, probably unnecessary to have more). Overall, it was a fantastic meal and I would like to come back here and try something different (or just get the chicken and waffles again). It wasn't until we stood up to leave that I realized how full I was, but it was a meal well-worth it.

Food -5 Stars. Decor/maintenance-1 star. The food was fun, delicious, and interesting...BUT I have a huge problem paying high prices to sit in a space that needs basic maintenance. The place is quirky, so there is really no excuse because it would only take a weekend to spruce it up. We are talking chipping paint, dirty walls, and my personal pet peeve dirty bathroom doors. 5 minutes with a Mr. Clean Magic eraser would make a huge difference.
(3)Rob L.
Cute little joint with decent atmosphere. Service was very good, drinks priced reasonably. Mains and apps were a bit overpriced for what you get. I has the pork belly which was tasty but slightly overlooked and under flavored for $20. I would probably not go back.

I went to Brookville recently as a group of 5 on a Thursday night and really enjoyed the whole experience. The restaurant itself is small and eclectic in its furnishings. It overlooks the downtown mall which gives it an open feel for how small it is. The servers were nice, knew a lot about their offerings, and weren't overbearing even though it was a really slow night. The food and drink are all local as they'll tell you right away. Nearly everything on the menu, which changes daily, is sourced from within 100 miles. That means talking about the specific plates probably won't help since the offering will differ based on the season and what's available from the local farms. Needless to say I was extremely happy with the food. One note for people that don't eat pork there's bacon in almost everything so take that into account. The wine list is also all from Virginia and we had 2 nice bottles of local whites. They were reasonably priced and overall the cost was not bad considering we each had an app, entree, and 2 bottles for the table. It all came to ~$50/person and it was well worth it. I highly recommend Brookville for a nice dinner with friends, a special occasion, or a business dinner. I don't think they could handle big groups however and it's a little pricey for a casual night out.
(5)Adam M.
One of the best meals I've had in some time. Local ingredients and wine pairings add to the appeal. Just go. And get the duck if the chef has it on the daily menu--it is fabulous!
(5)Jingwei W.
We had pork belly, chicken and waffle, and potato soup as appetizer. I really like the pork belly but not a big fan of the source of chicken n waffle or potato soup.

Deserves more recognition than it gets. Ever since I moved here about a year ago, Brookville has been a standard choice for our weekend outings. The attention to local ingredients and high quality food has been appreciated since day one. The first time I bit into the surryano fritters? My eyes about rolled back into my head. From then on, it was delight after delight. Some highlights from my visits: Cornbread with honey butter Truffle fries Biscuits Anything on their brunch menu There are many more but I simply cannot remember them. In any case, while on the pricey side, this is because there's nothing processed, pre-packaged, and re-heated. Everything comes from the heart of Chef Harrison. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is because of their service. Consistently, the worst part of our experience has always been the service. The service has always been friendly, but when they get busy, the waitresses seem to lose their heads and forget about tables occasionally. This results in long waits for ordering, water refills, and other minor things. Because they're always so cordial, it's not too big of a deal, but it's enough to knock a star off.

I love the decor and atmosphere of Brookville. It's especially cool that 90% of the food is sourced within a 100 mile radius of Charlottesville! However, I was also fairly disappointed by my Restaurant week experience here (as I was by Orzo) The amuse bouche offered were kind of strange. The cheesy scrambled eggs basically could have been made at IHOP and the brussel sprouts with a sunny side up egg on top were way too salty and oily. Also, these dishes totally missed the point of an amuse bouche, which you're supposed to be able to eat in one or two bites. I hope the normal menu has better options because the only two interesting items that were offered were chicken and pork belly. Most of our table ordered pork belly, but were disappointed to find that it was a very small portion, with few sides (simply sauce and an apple slaw). I would have enjoyed the dish much more had the slaw also been flavored with mint, citrus or other flavors. In fact, it wasn't even slaw...it was just sliced apples. Needless to say, the portions did not fill up the men in the group, who have insatiable appetites. What completed this meal (and I don't mean in a good way) were the desserts: chocolate chip cookie--without the bacon that night because they apparently didn't have any, a bruchetta/jam/cheese plate with too little jam and fruit and too much cheese, and finally apple cider donuts that were overfried and under-flavored. Having been trying to come here for the past 3 years, I am sad to say that I was thoroughly disappointed with Brookeville Restaurant week. Maybe their brunch and normal menu would be better.

Used Yelp to find a good place to eat near our hotel. Cute decor, seems to be on a canning theme - bell jars everywhere. Other trend was bacon- nothing wrong with that! Bacon popcorn in leu of bread before dinner, bacon chocolate chip cookie for desert (free with offer on Yelp). Respectable beer and wine choices. Local ingredients put together in interesting ways. Not a huge menu, but who cares? There were several things I would have loved to try. Husband and I decided to get the veggie ragout and the short ribs. Both were served over grits , the grits getting yummy flavor from what's on top. We were moaning after each bite, so tasty! If I lived here I'm sure I would stop by often to see what other dishes they cook up.
(5)Caitlyn R.
The tasso grits are one of the best dishes I've ever had. The pork belly entree is delicious as well. After one visit I decided it is one of my favorite restaurants in Charlottesville and I can't wait to come back and try everything else.. chicken and waffles next time!
(5)Brett H.
The food and service here are fantastic. My only complaint would be the dining room. The front dining room is pretty cool, but the back room is pretty lame. It needs more edge. I do like the chalk board with the map of Va that shows where the food is coming from.

My first venture to Brookville was with a friend of mine who had a Groupon or Living Social coupon (don't remember which one) last fall and I came back again in the spring and was blown away both times. Brookville is tucked away on the edge of the downtown mall tucked next to what is now the Whiskey Jar, and you have to walk upstairs to get the restaurant. Once you're upstairs, the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The exposed brick walls, bookshelves and Mason jar glasses add unique charm to the décor and the large windows in the front room overlook part of the downtown mall. A mark of a great chef (or chefs, as Brookeville has several) is when he or she can make simple dishes come to life. My first visit I had the chicken and collard greens and from the first bite I thought I had died and gone to heaven. My second visit I opted for the Brookville Burger, one of the few menu staples and fell in love all over again. The waitress and I had a good laugh discussing about how most customers approach eating the burger as it was way too large to tackle by hand (much easier when cut in half.) The waitresses both times were attentive and friendly and provided great suggestions. The second of my two visits I had to change my reservation three times. I felt terrible but the host was extremely accommodating and during restaurant week, no less. The wine list seemed pretty standard for the Charlottesville area, but the star of Brookville is really the food, not the wine, something I have no problem with. We also tried the apple pie with cheddar and the bacon chocolate chip cookies, both were delicious. The menu changes constantly daily, although they always use local ingredients and I have full faith in whatever the chefs choose to add. A little on the pricey side for my 20-something budget, this is truly a special treat place for me. I don't get to come as often as I like, but when I do, it's always worth it.

My wife and I have been here three times in the last few months and have loved almost everything we've had. By far the standout has been the pork tenderloin. Probably the best piece of pork I have ever eaten. The onion rings that accompanied it were a bit on the greasy side though. The Brookville burger is also delicious, and the french fries are fantastic. Update: We have now been here 6 times in the last year. Brookville continues to impress. The strip steak over grits with creamed leeks was AMAZING!
(5)Diane S.
Great food even though the menu is limited. All fresh fare I had the organic chicken breast over ramps and grits, seemed like a small portion, but was perfect, usually prefer thighs cuz breasts r too dry for me, but this was juicy. My husband had the less healthy chicken and waffles, so yummy. Also, their bloody was great and ending our meal with the bacon chocolate chip cookie was perfect. The only con was that we made a reservation and was seated at a small table for 2 in the middle of the room when other couples were seated at larger tables or near a window, also you must climb a whole flight of stairs to get to it.
(4)Ashley W.
I love that they use local produce and meat! The food was pretty good too. Luis had the crab cakes which I thought was ok. I had the roasted duck breast with potatoes on the side which was good. I will probably try something else the next time I go tho...

We spent the night at the Omni in downtown Charlottesville, and when we walked out of the hotel for dinner, we walked right into Brookville only a few steps away. Lucky us. It's a locally owned restaurant, and it serves a constantly changing menu of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. There's even a chalkboard up listing the area farms that supplied some of the featured foods. That's impressive. It also means that some great dishes you heard about might not be available all the time. The menu is broken into snacks, small plates and big plates. We're not big eaters, so we found the snacks and small plates sufficient; buffet eaters would likely want a big plate. The salads were very fine (garden greens with lemon, vinegar and parmesan cheese was definitely a winner), while the bratwurst with potato salad was good (the brat wasn't quite spicy enough for my taste, however). The chicken liver pate was quite satisfying, snack size, the pate on three toast points. The bar serves beer and wine, no liquor, but there are lots of local brews. The service is most engaging, everyone couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. The restaurant is located upstairs with only a narrow stairway at street level. You won't regret the climb, however. Note: our comments are based on only one dining experience.

We should have know when we were the one of only two tables on a Saturday night, that we should have selected another place to eat. My two complaints are that: 1) the food uses too much salt and butter to make otherwise cheap dishes taste better, and 2) the prices are much higher than comparable restaurants in C'Ville. I had fettuccine with salted ham and greens, which was good, except that the portion was literally the size of a soup cup and rather sparing with the ham and greens. My wife had a vegetable ragout on a bed of cheese grits, which was doused in oil. It too was good, but I think I have had similar tasting cheese grits at Cracker Barrel or Biscuitville (for all those from SoVa and NC) for a buck fifty, not twenty. Lastly, I am all for local foods, especially at a Southern restaurant in Virginia. I don't think the knowledge though, that Brookville is the most locally sourced restaurant, makes up for the quality or prices of the food. That said, the night was still enjoyable. The service was great and I loved the decor. Since the place was pretty much empty, we sat by the window which has a great view over the western end of the Downtown Mall. I like the decor which reminded me of an old-school, but casual living room. There were fresh cut flowers at every table. Overall, I would not resist too much if someone wanted to go here again (you can still have a good time), but I don't think I will ever come back.

I had wanted to try Brookville the last two times I was in town but it didn't work out so this time I made reservations and made sure I got in there. When I arrived for my 7pm reservation on a Wednesday there were no other diners, which I thought was surprising, but that would be my only complaint. The service was amazing, the menu was intriguing and the food was excellent. I'm vegetarian and while there weren't ample veg offerings what they did have on the menu were exciting and delicious. I asked for a wine suggestion, describing what I wanted, and I was brought a lovely glass exactly as described. All in all I was thrilled with my meal and I would definitely come back next time I'm in town.

I was expecting to LOVE Brookville. I'd researched it online, and saw that it was mentioned in Southern Living, so when I had family in town, I decided to try it. I was so disappointed. The restaurant seems like a clash of low and high southern cuisine. Fried chicken and waffles, mason jars for water, but otherwise fancy decor and prices to match. The food was fine, but the service and atmosphere is really flawed. The waiter came up to take our drink order and asked if we were ready to order our meal too. This is a little thing, but generally, one gets to sit with wine for a while, then order food. We felt rushed. Having said that our waiter, was so nice and helpful, but really should have been trained to not do that, even if they're busy. Next, we ordered the wine. My mom asked our very nice waiter for a suggestion, wanting a big bold red. She tasted what we got, and it tasted off to her. She gave some to me, and it tasted off to me too. We were both convinced that we had a bad bottle because it tasted too thin and sharp. It didn't taste like it needed to breathe, it tasted like it was corked. She tells a waiter, who brings our bottle to the manager (who is also the wife of the owner, apparently). The manager comes back to our table and loudly in a quiet restaurant explains that we were wrong, that the wine was fine, and that it was probably just cold and needed to warm up, but that it tasted fine. They would comp the wine and bring us the list so we could pick something else that was more to our liking. I found that really frustrating because my parents are total winos - all of their vacations are centered around wine. One of the reasons they moved houses was in the name of better wine storage. If my mom says that the bottle is corked (and I agreed), the bottle is corked. She spends her life constantly around wine. Anyway, our waiter was really nice about it, but the woman was really condescending when she came over to speak with us. It was unnecessary and she wasn't listening at all to what we were saying. Our bibb salads were great, but then our entres arrived. There were generally fine. My friends both enjoyed their meals, but my mom's lamb was a bit too rare for her taste, which probably happened, because she was never asked how she would like it cooked. I am a vegetarian, and said (because there was nothing vegetarian on the menu) that I would trust the chef's judgement on my entre choice. I got a turnip ragout with cooked cabbage and fried polenta. It was fine, but it was pretty light on taste. For dessert, I got the apple fritter. I love all apple desserts, so I was curious to taste it, but I asked for it with no whipped cream. It came out covered in whipped cream. Once we got that fixed, I couldn't really taste the apple. It tasted like fried doughnuts covered in cinnamon. It was good, but not what I expected. I love southern food, and I'm a total foodie, but my meal at Brookville was really not up to par. Maybe this was just an off night, but the whole experience was just really frustrating.

Incredible food (4-5 star). Horrible service (one star). After a couple of months of less than stellar DC dining, the GF and I were very excited to check this place out after a UVa game. The atmosphere and food of a place like this are completely missing from the dining scene up here. I'm a huge football fan, but I was more excited about coming to C-Ville more for Brookville than the game. I guess that when I know I've made the leap to Yelp addict/foodie. Good restaurants have surpassed college football. GASP! We sat at the bar while we waited for a table. The hostess who doubled as a bartender, was clearly flustered. We sat for a while before we could finally get the attention of a second waiter/bartender to take our drink order. There was a nice wine/beer list that focused heavily on local stuff (like the rest of the menu) and the glasses of VA white were good, if not slightly overpriced. The gf and I decided to make a shareable feast as we often do, by splitting the three course prix fixe and adding a few more starters. Unfortunately out of the three starters we ordered, they only had one. We ended up having to get a beet salad that neither of us really wanted. When we finally got food it was almost worth all of the hassle. The beef brisket, amazing. The beet salad, very good. The NC shrimp were the best shrimp I've had all year. Simply incredible, the garlic aioli was the perfect sauce for these suckers. The flank stank was pretty good and perfectly cooked, if not underseasoned. We heard the chocolate chip cookie/bacon desert was amazing. So I was really excited to try it. Unfortunately after waiting quite a bit for desert, our waiter come over to tell us that the only desert they had left was apple pie. I accepted and the pie was pretty damn good, but I still wanted to try those cookies. Overall out of the 5 items we ordered, they didn't have three. Unacceptable. Also unacceptable that the waiter didn't know that the kitchen was out of any of this stuff until 10+ minutes after we ordered each time. We overheard them comping the table beside us $20+ for their beverages, while they did nothing for us. We had the same waiter. How can this be? I wanted so bad for this place to be great, and the food for the most part was, but they fall flat on the service end.
(3)Dan W.
THe food I had--a simple salad and fettucine--was delicious. Simple, local, extremely tasty. Good wine and excellent atmosphere. If I lived in C'town, this would be my go to place.

Very nice space, great ambiance--superb service. I liked the fresh ingredients and each dish well plated--the New York strip steak is innovative with an crispy onions, caramalised onion puree and English peas.

I just moved from NYC so I'm used to amazing restaurants, but Brookville is definitely one of the best places I've been to. Brookville is a small-ish space at one corner of the Downtown Mall, right about Escafe. Easy to miss, but you won't want to! Brookville's thing is fresh, local ingredients and new menus daily. The waitress informed us that sometimes the menu even changes between lunch and dinner. I had baby back ribs with sweet chili sauce to start, and my boyfriend had a fusili with finely shaved pecorino that was one of the best dishes I've ever had. For entrees, we shared a perfectly-cooked steak and a pork belly dish that had a delicately fried egg and toast that came with it - it was an innovative take on breakfast. Dessert of a bacon and honey Belgian waffle with grilled peaches on top and a great local wine to go with the meal were the perfect finishing touches. HIGHLY recommend this place!

So, after being quite the Yelp voyeur over the years, it was my recent trip to Brookville that finally tipped the scales and convinced me to start posting. So if Brookville moved the needle, why only 3 stars? The easiest way for me to explain it is to crib a Jerry McGuire quote - I love Brookville for the restaurant it wants to be and I love Brookville for the restaurant it almost is. I so desperately wanted to have Brookville knock it out of the part and bring me back to my foodie days in NYC. And there were some aspects that did! But there were some inconsistencies that made me realize there is room to grow before Brookville can be lock-solid dependable. My group of 4 started out with the charcuterie and cheese platter. We received no instruction on the selections and had to figure it out on our own. The accouterments were rather skimpy and at times misplaced. The grilled bread was pretty far north of grilled and I the char overwhelmed the delicate cured meats. We also ordered the fried broccoli and pork belly corn dog. My companions raved about the broccoli - it wasn't for me, but I was definitely a fan of the corn dog, The pork belly was tender, the corn coating rich yet light. I would have loved a more intricate mustard to accompany the dog, but as a mustard agnostic, I still enjoyed it. I stuck with the small plates for dinner and ordered the buffalo sweet breads. They were delicate, tender and with just the right amount of buffalo flavor. They skimped on the aioli dipping sauce, so I wound up having to re-up. Two of our companions ordered the skirt steak with chevre mousse - the steaks were well cooked and I sneaked a spoonful of the mousse - pretty divine. My hubby ordered the pork loin - while it was juicy and cooked perfectly, I found myself missing a nice spicy crust. Dessert was completely unnecessary, but we went for it anyway. We ordered the jelly dough-nuts and fudge. I was excited to hear the dough-nuts had a touch of habanero in the filling, but was disappointed when it was light on the heat. The fudge was reminiscent of my mother's - again, had hoped for something a little offbeat. We had a great Cab Franc to begin the meal but were disappointed with the Petit Verdot that we paired with the entrees. Had would have liked a bit more collaboration on the wine selection - we received suggestions from our waiter before he took our order or asked what we typically like. All-in-all, it was a fun time with some strong highlights (corn dog and sweet breads), but some of the items that could have easily been standouts and set the bar high for downtown dining, missed the mark. Brookville - please keep trying to be that restaurant that we all want to love.

Just got home from a very nice dinner at Brookville. The food/drink was some of the best I've had in C'ville, and the service was very attentive. Highlights included the maple pork belly bites and foie gras, as well as a great selection of beers, wines, and ciders. Just about everything was local or close to it, and incredibly fresh for February. The only problem: the kitchen had a little trouble coping with (an admittedly complex set of) allergies, and ended up serving my partner something she wasn't supposed to eat. However, they made it right quickly and with a smile. It was a situation we've encountered at many restaurants, and they handled it better than anyone else so far. Bottom line: We'll be back.

Inventive menu. Local sources. Amazing tastes! You must visit this new culinary delight.

This is a great concept from a UVA grad. It's a constantly changing, creative menu that relies on local ingredients. My friends had gone yesterday and enjoyed it so much they were willing to go back today. The table started with an order of hush puppies. Traditionally, I don't care for hush puppies. I've always found them to be dry and bland. These, on the contrary, were flavorful and accompanied by a delicious sauce/relish. I could taste cucumbers and tomatoes, but it was creamy with a little zing. I had their signature burger which, I had read, is made with a combination of steak and bacon. It was perfectly cooked, juicy but not too fatty tasting and just divine. It was too thick to eat with my hands, but they forsaw that problem and provide a steak knife. The onion relish on the burger was delicious. There was a thin slice of tomato and some mayo - elegant and simple. I subbed salad which was made with baby greens and some delightful peppery sprout I couldn't identify. Not too much dressing. 2 of my friends, who also ordered the burger, enjoyed the handmade potato chips. We were convinced that they were fried in duck fat or lard, but turns out it was "good old fashioned vegetable oil." Another friend ordered the pork belly. I had been on the fence, but managed to tell myself that a burger (made, at least in some part, out of bacon) was healthier. The pork belly was served as a sort of open-faced sandwich. I had never tried pork belly before. Dare I say it was better than bacon? It had been glazed, perhaps with maple. It was crispy and soft and sweet and salty. The chef/owner came out to say hello and was bright and friendly. The decor is somewhere between coffee shop casual and fine dining. There's a sitting area with a library of cook books to check out while you wait for your friends. The chairs in the dining room were REALLY comfortable. It looks like there will be a great bar area. Can't wait for them to get their ABC license. Until then, I will enjoy it at lunch and when they open for dinner, liquor or not, on August 17th, I look forward to more of Brookville's inventive, and delicious, fare.
