This place is awesome ! Mostly because the hibachi chef ( forgot his name ) was super friendly and knowledgeable. He was engaging and we had fun just watching him do this tricks. Never a dull moment and wish the whole process was rather longer. The food was good and so was the service. I recommend this place highly

Have had dinner at this location at least 4 times but this most recent visit will be my last. Arrived for dinner on a Saturday evening around 8. The sushi cooler at the sushi bar was empty and all the sushi was sitting on the counter in containers. My husband and I ordered 3 sushi specials. The sushi "chef" gave us an "appetizer" of a few shreds of cucumber, crab meat, and some tempura crunchies. The dish tasted sour and was not very appealing. Next came our soup and salad. The soup was ok, but the tofu in it was chewy. I started to eat my salad when I came across something I *couldn't* chew. When I pulled it out of my mouth, it was a piece of paper. I looked in my salad bowl, and I saw a piece of paper about 3 inches square that said "lettuce" on it. So glad my salad was labeled. Next came our sushi. One with crab and spicy mayo tasted foul. The other two had seaweed sheets that were so chewy we couldn't bite through them. The owner came out to apologize for the paper in my salad and said she would give us 10% off our bill. Really? For what is probably several health code violations? When I told her about the chewy seaweed she denied it could be true. I'll never go back to this place again. Absolutely horrible food and service.

Was craving sushi the other day at lunch and this was the closest spot to my job so decided to give it a try. Actually there is one closer spot called sarku japan that just opened but its like a fast food chain place so I was scared to try it. Anyway, When I walked in around 1 it was completely dead other than a group of about 5 eating hibachi. I sat at the bar. For lunch they had a couple specials, I chose the 2 rolls that came with miso soup and salad for $10. You have about 8 choices that you can pick from as far as rolls go for this option. The miso soup was good and the salad was a little dressing heavy but good. For my rolls I chose spicy tuna and bagel roll. The spicy tuna was good but the bagel roll was not. Not sure if you can tell because I took a bad picture (oops) but it had wayyyy too much cream cheese and was inconsistent with the cuts/portion. The chef was very nice and made conversation with me. Still on the fence if I would come back or not.

Stopped by here with my family after a long day of house hunting. I liked this place, it had great service and food was good. I had the sushi and it was really good but I couldn't finish one of the rolls. My husband had the chicken hibachi and he said it was REALLY good. I liked most things about this place but the only thing holding me back from giving it a better review is the PRICES! Man this place is grossly overpriced....but I might end up eating here more often than I'd like on those days I'm too lazy to go somewhere else since I'll be nearby.

Great service! Seriously..our server was super friendly and accommodating the entire time. The place was freeeezing when we entered and he noticed we were rubbing our arms to keep ourselves warm, so he adjusted the thermostat. Later, my manager spilled her miso soup and he literally came running over to clean it up. My coworkers and I went here for lunch on a Wednesday and the place was empty. I live in South Riding, so I wasn't surprised since most restaurants in the area are normally dead. The sushi took a little while to prepare, but the sushi chef gave us each a little appetizer concoction on the house! Luckily my coworkers and I were in no rush to get back to the office, so we didn't mind the wait. We ordered quite a few rolls and the portion size was great! So. Much. Sushi. I got the hot roll lunch combo, which came with spicy California roll, spicy crunchy shrimp roll, and spicy salmon roll (or spicy tuna). It came with miso soup and salad, both of which were good. Salad with the peanut dressing and Miso soup wasn't overpowering with salty flavors. Very subtle. Each roll was actually really good. They're not served with spicy mayo, which I know that's what some people expect with "spicy" rolls. This lunch combo was only around $14, which I thought was a great deal. My coworkers ordered a variety of rolls (dragon roll, fuji(?) roll, valentine roll, and a few others that I can't remember). They both really enjoyed it as well. Now, I'm not a HUGE sushi fan, but I do crave it every now and then. So, with the service and yummy tasting sushi they provide here....I will definitely be back! Especially since it's right next to my house! :)

Super yummy/delicious/fresh sushi near the South Riding area. I've been here about five times and the service and food are consistently excellent. I always order their DragonBall roll and try to order a new roll every time. The sushi chef is always smiling and one time we wanted to order a fourth roll (fatass moment) and the chef recommended a roll with scallops which he prepped right away (yum!). One of the best sushi places in NOVA area!

I went here last night after a memoir writing class at the Gum Spring Library - it's practically across the street. And there's nothing like being creative and then heading over to a sushi place where everything arrives at the table looking like a work of art! These sushi chefs are true artists. The chef even sent over a free appetizer while I waited. The server was an all-around beautiful woman - very polite and attentive, with a genuine smile on her face. Although I wasn't completely a fan of the filling in the "wonderful roll" that I ordered, the fish on top was outstanding as was the salmon and yellowtail maki I ordered - they were straight up melt in your mouth butter!

We love coming Shiro! The food is always fresh and delicious. The staff is always wonderful! My husband and I came in late trying to have a rare date night. They stayed open and served us great food and even played romantic music for us. Thank you to everybody there!

After MOCA in chantilly got turned over I was looking for a different sushi restaurant near my house in Stone Ridge and Shiro happened to be less than a mile away! Love the lunch hibachi special, it's a fantastic price for the portion. $11 for the steak hibachi (there's also the chicken or shrimp option) along with veggies and fried rice. They didn't give me the YumYum sauce though which would've made it perfect. The medium rare steak was tender and delicious. I was disappointed that I received the Salmon Maki Rolls because I meant the Salmon Avocado rolls (I get them at every sushi restaurant).. :( However the special roll was delicious and filling. Shiro wouldn't be my first choice for sushi, but I'd definitely come back here since it's so close to my house and service was excellent. I love family businesses and the owners are very sweet here.

This IS the best restaurant in the South Riding / Stone Ridge area. The presentation and quality of their food made me miss moving from Alexandria but I've found my gem stone! All restaurants aren't without flaws so let's do the BLUF and Review: BLUF: Food quality excellent and very presentable. You won't leave hungry. Scallops were a little tough and the creamy hibachi sauce was a little bland. Best in area! Review: Customer Service - 3 stars. Very attentive! The sushi chef did an awesome job and one of my favorites is having management stop by the table. Hibachi chef was friendly too. He rushed and when you rush or are careless you can have oil splatter. It hit me twice. Once on my skin and once on my jeans. Quality - 3 stars. The food was delicious but a bit over-salted and loads of butter!! We ordered the sushi appetizer, hibachi shrimp & chicken / shrimp & scallops. The soup amazingly was very pleasant and a veggie broth. Skip the creamy sauce for your hibachi order and scallops were a little tough too Quantity - 5 stars. We left with a bag. You won't leave hungry. Recommend ordering the sushi. Very fresh. The fried rice which is hard to find good fried rice in this area was amazing and plentiful Price - 3 stars. No different than any other run-of-the-mill sushi restaurant. Par Ambience - 4 stars. It's small but they did a fantastic job decorating it. Overall - 3 stars. It's great for the area but I like Osaka in Gainesville a little better. But distance here is convenient

Is it the best sushi I've ever had? Prolly not, but for the location, the prices, the fact that you get a free Miso soup and salad with every sushi order, a delicious free app, and awesome service, you really can't beat it!!

There is a lot to love about this place. First and most important to note is the exceptional service. If you have been more than once, they remember you and make you feel right at home. The food is equally exceptional. I have not previously been comfortable eating sushi, but after eating here, I have developed a taste for it. Knowing that the fish is fresh and properly handled was helpful making this transition.

The first time we came here we had a couple rolls and had a decent experience, if forgettable. This time we had takeout chirashi (2) with a spicy tuna roll. The roll was a very good portion, large sized and with plenty of spicy tuna. The chirashi was a bit of a disappointment. Although there was a good variety of fish, they were thinly sliced and one of them had a slight fishy taste. I was left wanting more food when I finished, so my boyfriend was even less satisfied. Also, there is no soup and salad included when you do takeout. Bummer, since there's another sushi place only a few miles away with cheaper prices and gives soup/salad. I doubt we'll be back for more chirashi.

I probably come here about 2-3 times per month, and it has stayed one of my favorite local restaurants. Small rant: I am so upset to see what has happened to Shiro and the other businesses in the plaza due to the old Gum Springs closing back in May 2014. The only way to get in here now is a dead end road. Since its not so convenient to get in here anymore, business has dropped off drastically and it just astounds me the county allowed this to happen since small businesses are so important to have in the community. The owners of Shiro are fighting to get a road built to the new Gum Springs, but the land owner next door won't give them the permission. The whole situation makes me so sad to see these small businesses struggle like this. Anyway, back to the food: If you've been here before, you will know that you get a complimentary appetizer and soup (either onion or miso). Well, the fiance fell in love with the appetizer and now gets it as a meal. It has salmon, tuna, crab, yum yum sauce and some sort of spicy sauce in it. The meal is not on the menu, but just ask for the chef's special, and they'll know what it is. The fried rice is not like any other fried rice (Not like Chinese fried rice that is usually saturated with soy sauce and completely brown). No, the fried rice here is light, not loaded with salt, and is wonderful. The only minor ding I would give this place is that sometimes its a challenge to get the hot dishes from the kitchen to come out at the same time as the sushi. This can be somewhat uncomfortable when half the table orders sushi and the others from the grill. However, despite of that, the fish is incredibly fresh, and they've recently introduced new rolls a couple months ago. I'm a fan and will continue to come here for the food, friendly service and to help support them as a small business struggling to hang on despite their setbacks this past year.

Priced right and super friendly, skilled chefs. The sushi is first rate and skillfully prepared. Hibachi is fun and always a good deal. These place got stranded by the Gum Spring cutoff. Please give them your business if you'd like to keep them around. They really do have about the best sushi I've had in the DC area.

Visited here for the first time around one on a rainy Saturday afternoon. We were extremely impressed by the server Paul and the amazing sushi chef ! The service was top notch and the sushi was very fresh and well constructed. You can't ask for a better local sushi spot - keep up the good work ! We will be back for sure. Just a suggestion - the music could be a little livelier :)

The first time I tried Shiro, it was for lunch. The sushi was pretty good (for an average place), the chef/owner and server were very friendly. They didn't have hon (real) wasabi, but they had fresh horseradish instead of the powdered stuff. The dragon roll was beautifully presented. It was a good experience. So I decided to go back with my husband for dinner and do the hibachi grill, and the experience was NOT good. First of all, the drink menu had the exact same drinks listed as Sakura, which I thought was strange. Were they trying to copy them? Or maybe that's the standard drink list for hibachi places? I don't know. But then I heard the bartender ask the owner how to make the drink that I ordered (off of their own list!). It tasted good, but that whole experience was off-putting. The husband was also very disappointed that they didn't carry unfiltered sake. Then we ordered some sushi, and it was not good! I don't know what happened, but the quality was totally different from when I went for lunch. We ordered some fatty tuna, and it was stringy and terrible. I'm not even sure that it was actually fatty tuna. Then, the hibachi chef came out. I feel really terrible for writing this, because he was such a nice guy, but it was so pathetic. He was an older gentleman, and he kept trying to do all the the flashy tricks, but couldn't pull them off. He tried to catch an egg three times, and on the last time actually flung it out so that it splattered all over a (thankfully) empty chair at the table. What if someone had been sitting there? He also had a hard time reaching to put the food on the plates, especially at the corner where I was sitting. So he just kind of flung it at the plates and hoped it landed. Eventually, we started picking up our plates and holding them out to help, but he didn't give any warning, so sometimes we didn't have time. When he did this with the vegetables, he flung some of them onto my arm and burned me. I didn't say anything at the time, because I felt so bad for him. But that really is unacceptable. The hibachi food was okay, but not as good as other places, and definitely not good enough to overcome everything else that was going on. We left feeling depressed, and will not be returning.

A neighborhood gem! It's a tiny little place that's never too full so you always get a place to sit. Hibachi is great but we usually go for sushi which is awesome! The You and Me roll is our favorite.

3.0 stars for food and 4 stars for service. Specificaly checked out this place although it was a bit out of the way. We picked a time when traffic wasn't so crazy. Located in a local strip mall in the chantilly area. Parking is definitely not a problem. We were greeted warmly and was handed the menu with a brief introduction. Being new to the place, we took our time to peruse the menu, We decided on the sushi rolls and sashimi. I noticed there wasn't any UNI on the pre filled checklist, so I asked the chef and luckily they have it for that day and I ordered $7 for 2 pcs. The dragon roll was nicely done. They were gracious with the wasabi unlike the other joints. My sashimi had thick cuts of tuna, salmon, yellow tail. There was mackerel as well but the slices were minuscule compared to the other fishes. Presentation was a bit generic. We requested for lite soy because for some reason they had the same dark soy in the lite soy container. The server immediately apologized and took all the bottles away and gave as sachets instead. There is def room for improvement. The friendly atmosphere would make you want to go back.

This is a small place, and the service was good. The prices are decent, and the only complaint I have is on the actual physical menu! There was a total of four menus handed to us. Three of the menus listed their specialty rolls on both sides in what seems to be 20 point font. Why didn't they just consolidate these into one menu? It took us a while to order because of having to flipp back and forth so many times! Very frustrating! Aside from that..... everything else was ok.

This is now me and the hubs local go to sushi place. 2nd time last night...in a sad looking bad positioned strip mall, but easy enough to get to because there is a traffic light off 50. Service has been friendly and fast. Have not had the hibachi here, but seems like a popular option...Have come in here for sushi and the appetizers. They do provide a small appetizer gratis, with soup and salad...they are just ok...The fried soft shell crab and shrimp tempura are disappointing....but the special rolls are so good and the unagi portions are good. Prices are pretty good for the area as well.

First time here and had a great experience. Staff is friendly and attentive. Arrived at 8pm on a Friday night. We ordered the Sushi platter and Sashimi platter along with a California Maki for my 8YO :) Everything from the miso soup, sesame ginger salad, crab salad to the entrees was delish! Reservations are accepted for parties of five or more & is kid friendly (I have an 8YO). The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because it was our first time here. We will definitely be back :)

I'm not sure why this place is rated so high. We went two weeks ago and ordered the sashimi deluxe and chicken hibachi for the kids. The sushi was good enough - except for the salmon, which was so fishy we could not eat it. The hibachi-prepared rice was so greasy that you could see the oil oozing underneath the rice. Service was very nice and accommodating, but we won't be back.

  • Kris D.

The hibachi was absolutely incredible! The staff was friendly and prompt, and let me tell you - the yum yum sauce was delicious!! It seemed like a lot of people were taking out - try the hibachi grill if you haven't already!! You want be disappointed. :)

Great food and service. Reasonably priced. My daughter and I split their deluxe sushi platter, and we were pleasantly surprised to receive soup and salad before our sushi arrived. The sushi platter we ordered is "chefs choice," (he decides what fish to serve) but you can make specific requests, like no tuna or no eel or whatever. The sushi was as good as I've had. Attentive service. Highly recommended and we will be back!

I'm somewhat hesitant to get too excited about finding a great Sushi place a few miles from home. Most other restaurants in the area just haven't stuck. Not sure how much is related to average food service, subpar selection of restaurants or that most families just don't have the time and money to eat out much. Shiro's is definitely a cut above the average local fare. There's nothing too crazy about the restaurant itself. Decent decor, but no fancy ambience of any kind. Sushi bar, bar, hibachi tables and regular tables. Ok, good, I can bring my kids. The service was fast and the sushi was excellent. Took my wife here for her first sushi in 10 months, now that kid #4 is out. Had an assortment of special rolls, nigiri and maki rolls. The quality of the tuna, salmon, red snapper and eel was fresh and very tender. Even the cooked octopus was well prepared and not so chewy. The special rolls were excellent. Nice assortment of specials. The sushi chef prepared our assortment quickly and each dish was well presented. They have two hibachi tables. Typical hibachi experience, good place to bring and entertain your kids. I hope Shiro's has some staying power. We will definitely add this to our "regular" list. Considering that list is now two deep, it shouldn't take long to get back there and try some other dishes. Don't fear the lonely strip mall. This is worth visiting.

I feel like I'm on a real roll with these sushi reviews. Of course, that's probably at least paaaartly because of my mission to try out every single sushi restaurant in Greater Northern Virginia. And thanks to a UYE organized by Bobby K a few months ago, I got to test the limits of the "Greater" part by hiking out to Loudon County in search of Shiro. As you can see, it was totally worth it. Shiro Sushi is set up in a small strip mall with a big sign. They have both a regular sushi menu as well as lots of specials, and they also offer hibachi/teppenyaki (though they don't have cooktop-tables, they prepare it for you in the back and bring it out. So, no dinner + a show.) The sushi rolls that we all tried and shared were tasty and fresh, and the real awesome thing about Shiro is that they give you a bunch of freebies -- they offered us a little appetizer sushi salad thing to start with that was so tasty, I ended up ordering a larger version of it off their specials menu! Mmm. I don't think it takes any stretch of the imagination to say that with all the great sushi restaurants close by (not to mention all the scores of places I have yet to even try!) that I probably won't make the trek out to Shiro too often. But if I'm ever in the area, or meeting a friend from further out west, you better believe it'll be at the top of the list!

The best Sushi in the South Riding area. The location is somewhat strange as it is located in a small strip mall off of Gum Spring Road, look for the BP gas station and you'll know you're in the right place. The sushi chef is a nice Indonesian man, who truly takes pride in his creations and also cares about his customers. On both occasions that I have been here, we were given a small salmon and crab meat with cucumber and tempura flakes mini appetizer that was free of charge. Truly a nice touch. My friend always orders all different kinds of nigiri, and I tend to order cooked sushi. I always get the spicy tuna roll, the eel roll, and I tried a Shiro Special the Volcano Roll which is basically a California roll topped with salmon pieces in some kind of spicy mayo sauce. All sushi orders are served with miso soup and house salad. The miso soup here isn't watered down like most places and the house salad has that yummy sauce that is typical of most sushi restaurants. This Shiro is the sister restaurant to the one in Alexandria. Please try out this gem! The service is great, and everyone makes you feel at home! The sushi here is far better than Moca Bistro, where I had a haunting experience.

Except for it being cold in the restaurant, it was an excellent experience. I got one of their specialty rolls (S.F. roll) and my friend got the hot lunch roll combo. Both came with salad and miso soup. Definitely will be back.

I'm gonna keep this short and sweet. My husband is a very picky eater and does not eat sushi anywhere else but here. We come at least twice a month and I'm pretty sure the sushi chefs know my husband's order by heart! Service is very friendly and the food is delicious. The specials were stagnant for a while and so I just kept cycling through them, but they just added a few more special rolls the last time we were there and I was so not disappointed. Of course, I can't remember the fancy name off the top of my head, but it was yummo!! We've done the hibachi here once - Mother's Day a few years ago - and we had a lot of fun and enjoyed the intimate experience since there are only two hibachi tables there. Food was great and the chefs are always entertaining - highly recommend!

Shiro is definitely a good Chantilly find, especially for the teppanyaki! The food and sauces are delicious and your entree comes with soup and salad. The entrees are huge though, so come VERY hungry. We come here semi-regularly for a tasty, hearty meal. Prices are average. I think it is about $13 for a very hefty portion of Vegetable Hibachi and all the extras. I have had the sushi a few times. It's alright, but nothing to write home about. Definitely try the teppanyaki first. In my opinion it is the reason to come to Shiro.

Three and a half stars. If this place had been around when I'd lived right around the corner, I would've gone through an obscene amount of chirashi here out of pure convenience. They sure know how to pack bounty in a conservative looking bowl: solid amount of rice with diced sweet beancurd and Japanese pickles. Shredded nori and a pinch of sesame seeds on top. They are also very generous with roe garnishes. My only complaint was the quality of octopus and squid, which the knifework definitely struggled with on the latter. Pot of green tea was dandy. Polki appetizer was their take on poke, generous on dressing and not bad. Very similar to the complimentary opening salad, and certainly a variant in presentation and flavors of the bloody martini appetizer. Miso soup light and not too grainy. The baked salmon roll wasn't really for me, but still a decently balanced combination of warm textures. Artfully cut oranges flourished with the bill, fresh and sweet. TLDR: chirashi for life.

I'll travel to the ends of the Earth for good sushi and Chantilly is just about the same. The service was top notch from the time we were excitedly greeted at the front door until the Cheers-esque send off when we left. The menu is a bit expansive (there's 4 of them!) but they were very accommodating in making me a roll that wasn't on the menu. The prices were reasonable the ambiance and decor was spot on. I loved the giant Kimono in the glass display by the front door. I really enjoyed everything about this place except the location and would return if I'm ever in the area.

Overall: Good sushi in eastern Loudoun. One of our regular haunts. Was the fish fresh? Yes. What was good: "off the menu" roll and shashimi requests happily made to order. Staff friendly and attentive when busy. Sushi chef is good about recommendations. Restroom clean. What I wish: tighter rolls. BONUS POINTS: FRESH WASABI (in season) AND SHISO OBA!! (These are $$$. Some establishments do not offer these at all.)

We have been here many times. We came the first time because of the excellent reviews. We were not disappointed. My wife loves the lobster teriyaki. It is a whole lobster tail served several ways and it is delicious and reasonably priced. I tend to order the sushi. It is always fresh and beautifully prepared and served. The service is always excellent;. The staff is friendly and we always have a nice conversation with them. It is so good we come all the way from Bristow rather than go to local sushi places.

The spicy tuna crunch is amazing! This will now be my new spot for sushi in the Chantilly area. My initial stop here was for the hibachi. Located in a strip mall-like area, they only offer two hibachi stations. The staff greeted us warmly and provided very attentive service. While cooking on the hibachi grille, I was splashed with some juice, but since I was in a good mood I didn't act a monkey and make a big deal of it. I was actually surprised at my own reaction! Even though I hate to compare them to Benihana, I must. The food at Shiro is seasoned much better. I actually enjoyed eating my entree. The sushi at Shiro is just as good as Benihana, if not better. If Shiro starts teaching the cooks how to entertain while cooking, they will blow Benihana out the water in all areas (that matter to me). Congratulations, Shiro. You now have a regular customer in me!

I love otani in chantilly but living in SR. I wanted to give a "local" place a shot and I am glad we did. I went with my hubby and 2 boys. We only ate the hibachi, no sushi. They were very kid friendly and we enjoyed the food and experience. We will return! Thank you

Wait, what? I think people are rating this place so highly because Loudon County doesn't offer much (read: anything) in terms of good sushi. Yeah, our server was nice, but the sushi... the sushi was sub sub sub par. It put me off ever wanting to visit again.

    (1)
  • Nita H.

Rolled up on this joint down the street @hedegi recommended trying. This is a detour from my usual spot of Benihana in Sterling! Quiet, very friendly, fast and the food was pretty good and seasoned well. I still prefer a Benihana Friday night but this is a nice option!

Good hibachi but mediocre sushi. Staff is very friendly. If you want uni or toro, they don't have it since this is the suburbs of Loudoun County. :( The rice in the sushi is packed too hard, and they tend to sell sushi with lots of sauces and cream cheese. :( You won't find stuff like okonomiyaki or takoyaki here. If you love hibachi and don't care for sushi, then this is your place.

I wanted to give this 5 stars SO bad, but it was just short...4.75 if I could but I just can't do 5. My biggest reason for not being 5 is the simple fact that there's not enough special rolls...I think there was a total of 4 on the menu..If they added some more and they were quality it had 5 star potential. I ordered the spicy lobster, spicy shrimp, spicy tuna crunch, Bloody Martini and the red dragon. they were all good and the bloody martini was phenomenal. it also came with a free appetizer which was also very good. I only had the sushi so I can't comment on the rest, but overall a very good experience and I will definitely go back. Hopefully someone there will read this and add some more special rolls!!!

I have been to at least 100 sushi places and none have treated myself and my girlfriend the way this restaurant did. I will admit that the facility was not the most glamorous, but the food service and overall feel made up for it. They have a great house sake, which we followed with the avacado roll and the spicy tuna roll. The main course was a red dragon roll that really brought it home. They even went as far as to give us an orange to "freshen up". Great place. Must visit if you get the chance.

Love this place. We had so many birthday celebrations there. Hibachi is so good and sushi is amazing. It's a very cozy place and close by :-)

Top notch gem located in the heart of suburbia. Every time I've been the service has been over the top great, the food quality and flavor awesome, and it's right up the street. You don't have to travel far any longer for excellent fresh seafood options in the LoCo!

This is our favorite restaurant in the area. We eat here probably about once a week. Not only is the food excellent but the service is outstanding. Everyone is always super friendly.

Was our first time here. Was craving for sushi and decided to give this place a try after reading Yelp. Was kind of skeptical at first because we usually go to Tachibana, which is 30 minutes away. Also, the rating on Yelp was 4 1/2 stars. Not sure where owner or the sushi guys are from but the two sushi chefs were communicating in Spanish. Positives: Friendly/quick/accommodating service, clean interior, gave us free appetizer, and they have Ama Ebi and scallop. Negatives: Fish wasn't all that fresh, especially tuna and salmon. When my Chirashi came out, I smelled very fishy odor, like the one you smell when the fish isn't fresh. Didn't finish the tuna. Also, variety of fish is somewhat limited to the usual fish you see at other non-Japanese owned joints, e.g. Salmon, tuna, white tuna, yellow tail, snapper, and talapia. Ama Ebi is the only exception. Verdict: Service was great but ultimately, we go for food. Maybe we'll go back to try the teppan yaki and cooked fish but probably won't go back for fresh fish sushi.

The only reason they are getting 3 stars is they have really great service. If only there sushi and teriyaki was as good. The veggies tasted like nothing but butter, the chicken was incredibly over cooked to the point of being rock hard. Then there was the sushi itself. I had tuna and salmon. It was mostly bland, the fish was lackluster. I am hoping it was an off night, but I do not think I will be going back to find out.

Pleasantly surprised by the delicious sushi, delightful presentation and friendly service. The sushi is excellent and fresh. Place is very clean but the atmosphere a little sterile. I think if they painted the walls and piped Japanese music, it would be a big improvement. I can't wait to go back.

I ordered the Red Dragon Roll off of their specials menu. I only expected sushi but I got a 3 course meal...appetizers, sushi, and dessert! The cooks and waiters are all very polite and hospitable. I kind of stumbled on this place by accident but don't regret it all! I will def keep this place on my radar for the future. I highly recommend this to anyone!

Friday-night take-out was outstanding. Thank you for separating hot and cool - why do other places have a hard time with that? The order consisted of Gyoza, Ebi, a Gum Spring Roll, a Fuji roll, some nice fatty tuna, yellowtail, and trying out the veggie tempura. Of course it all was outstanding just like it always is at Shiro's. Don't let the sometimes spare restaurant fool you, there are plenty of take-out customers. The Fugi roll is right out of Seattle, a nice baked salmon taste. The tuna and yellowtail were delicious as always and the gum spring roll fresh. The tempura was really outstanding. For as cheap as it was, it was a large order and a good mix of starches and veggies. The broccoli was trimmed which was a nice, the mushrooms were large, the carrots and potatoes cut perfectly. There was plenty of sauce and it was thicker than what you'd normally get - I liked that part. See my other reviews for more in-depth analysis of the other dishes, but Shiro's continues to earn our business, we love it.

Surprisingly excellent sushi. Very fresh and well prepared. They clearly take pride in their service and prices are reasonable. Off the beaten track but a real gem! We will be picking up takeout on a regular basis!

This place is great. I get take out from Shiro approximately once a month and every time I'm there I'm happy with everything. Sometimes I call and have no idea what I want, the staff is happy to tell me about all the sushi rolls. The baked alaska is the greatest thing I've ever eaten. I could easily eat the entire roll myself on the drive home. The restaurant is small but so cozy. I highly recommend Shiro.

We tried this place after all the great reviews. We just moved to Aldie from Arlington, and I thought we were doomed to making our own sushi at home...or sitting in the endless NOVA traffic to score some. Luckily we have Yelp to find places like this. The service was attentive, but not over bearing, and they treated us to miso and salad since it was our first time...unless this is a normal treat...which we will find out soon enough on our next visit. We tried two traditional rolls and two of their specials. The two specials delicious and the presentation was very nice. The standard rolls were comparable to our other favorite sushi spots in taste, and the size of the regular rolls were larger than most places will send out. The crowd during the week seemed like they were locals, that made it a habit to hit this find up on a regular basis. I'm happy we found this place, and look forward to being a regular myself!

Delicious, friendly, clean. Chef provided special appetizer that started the meal off right. Staff is very responsive and pleasant. Shrimp tempura roll was great with the avocado and sauce on top! Will be back!

Great little place tucked off of Rt 50 in South Riding! It's a little difficult to find, but definitely worth the effort. The hubby and I stopped here on a rare date night and really loved it. We shared some pan-fried gyoza (crispy on the outside, very flavorful inside with a killer dipping sauce!) and a sashimi and maki appetizer (maguro and avocado maki not on the menu, but they made it for us because they're awesome like that). The sushi was fantastic; some of the best I've had outside Tokyo! I ordered a filet and shrimp hibachi, the hubby had the chirashi - both were really delicious! I find most places crazy overcook the filet, but the chef here was totally on his game - perfectly medium rare. With all the amazing food we ate, we really shouldn't have ordered the green tea ice cream because we were so stuffed, but we couldn't pass up the opportunity (it's so hard to find here). It did not disappoint! Though it is a bit far from where we live, we are so glad we made the trip. It was very reasonable (just over $50!), especially for the amount of food we got and how much we normally spend on a date night out. The staff was terrific as well, very welcoming and attentive (but not oppressive). We will definitely be back soon!

BY FAR our favorite hibachi restaurant. particularly at this location, the wait staff is quite friendly, the meats are always well-cooked to order (a bit hit or miss in kingstowne, depending on your chef). the "yum yum sauce" is delicious--put it on everything. on top of that, they've always been really great with me "customizing" my order, both due to allergy and preference. in fact, each time i come in, they remember it :) i truly can't say enough good things about shiro. love them, love their food.

We really like this sushi restaurant. The staff are friendly and sushi is fresh. Whenever we go, we order sushi, gyoza and they bring a delicious sushi appetizer on the house along with complimentary salad and miso soup. The appetizer is so delectable, I just wish they would sell it as a dish unto itself. The other reviews that talk about this appetizer and service are what initially brought us here. Well, we're regulars now. Yum!

STILL the most amazing sushi and habachi grills ever. They are generous and accommodating with their service and continue to serve quality food that is absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is also gorgeous and clean with romantic music playing in the background. Anything off the habachi grill is incredibly flavorful and their sauces are classic. The sushi is always fresh with clean flavors.

Stopped by in the quite long Memorial Day weekend. Everything is great as same as yelp's fan said, but I'm not in the mood for mayo. Love to see traditional of sushi or regular roll, fusion doesn't my type. Love chirashi bowl, simple of rice bowl with a multi layer of variety raw fish, full flavor of sweet and tangy from rice vinegar. If you're in West area and don't want to drive an hour to get descent Japanese food, Shiro is A must.

Great, outstanding, impressive service. The chirashi is seriously the bomb diggity. Very generous portions and really fresh fish. Truly a 5 star!!!

I have been here twice now, once for lunch and most recently for dinner. Both times were very good. The portions are large and the food is excellent. This by far is the best hibachi I have been to and easily surpasses Benihana. The service is amazing as well. They only lose one star because I feel their steak and chicken could be a little better quality, it's a little tough for my liking. I recommend giving them a try.

My husband and I love to come here for sushi. Its by far the best sushi that we have found in the area. The chief is very nice and friendly, Also feel like family when we walk in by the warm greeting and yummy food. Love it!!

My wife teriyaki portion is huge. They are only doing this so that they can charge more. One of my sushi was bad. It was kul that the waitress took it off the charge. Customer service was great. We were going to order dessert, but our main course wasn't great so we just stopped there. Overall, there are better sushi place.

My husband and I went here for lunch on a Sunday for sushi. I had noticed Shiro a little while ago, since our dogs go to the vet in the same little center, and had been meaning to try them out. We are always on the lookout for quality sushi places. We walked in and were greeted by the waiter, very pleasantly (service was excellent the entire meal). We ordered spicy crunch tuna and salmon, Alaska's Star (salmon combo with lemon wedges), Me & You (white tuna with seaweed salad on top) and Gum Springs (crab salad and shrimp inside) rolls. All of our rolls were of good size, extremely fresh and the flavors and textures complimented each other well. While it was good, the Gum Springs roll was not one I would order again, it had more mayo and seasoning than I like. The Alaska's Star roll was amazing and my favorite of the order. The salmon was buttery and the lemon gave it this light refreshing citrus zing! The spicy crunch tuna was good (Fuji's in Chantilly is better in my opinion) but the spicy crunch salmon was excellent. This trip was just for sushi, but I definitely want to try their hibachi next time, because if it is half as good as the sushi I will be a very happy gal!

My wife and I came here for lunch after we dropped the kids at camp. We ordered sushi deluxe and roll combo. The sushi was fresh and the rolls were delicious. I am not of fan of salads but their sesame dressing was one of the best I ever had. The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 is because they were understaffed. Although the service itself was very good and friendly, the sushi chef had to come out of his station to greet us, seat us and take our order. For that reason, our food took a little bit longer than expected. But overall, our experience was excellent and we plan on coming back.

Consistent, delicious and amazingly enjoyable sushi and japanese restaurant in Northern Virginia. I've been there 3 times now in the past month and will likely be going for years to come. As soon as you walk in you are greeted happily by almost every employee (including the sushi chefs) and are seated and taken care of promptly. They have an extensive menu and a ton of awesome special sushi rolls too. Another awesome highlight is the complimentary soup, salad and small appetizer you get while you wait for your food. Everything is incredibly fresh, delicious and has a ton of flavor. Definitely try this place. You are sure to be impressed!

Went here for the first time last night and the food was really good - we had two of the specialty rolls - You and Me and Dynamite rolls -- they both had the right amount of spicy heat to them. The late night meal hit the spot. Like other Yelpers stated - they give you free salad and miso soup as part of the meal. Each of the rolls were like $11-$12 - so very reasonably priced for what you get. Finally the service was really good - attentive and she personally gave us recommendations. Can't wait to go back.

More than pleasantly surprised. Fish was very fresh, and great service. Could use a few more sake choices but the house sake is good!

My wife and I saw this place driving down 50 the other day, and stopped there for dinner tonight. Service was friendly. They even came up to us after the soup and salad to apologize that the wait for the sushi was long (it wasn't), since there was a big take out order that was just called in as we sat down. Didn't even notice the delay. The sushi was great. The nigiri was really fresh, and the rolls were just as delicious. The only tiny complaint I have is that the miso soup wasn't hot, I had to ask them to re-heat it. But really, that was it. We did sushi only tonight, but will come back again soon to try the hibachi grill.

This place is absolutely fantastic. The sushi has a very fresh quality to it that is hard to find at other sushi joints in the area. The place is also very clean with amazing service. The food tastes fantastic and is a great price, especially the lunch specials. Sit at the sushi bar and the chef will most likely prepare you a sample free of charge! The presentation of all their dishes is very visually appealing. They have a variety of interesting dish ware for different items that creates a unique and creative presentation for every menu item. I don't base my decisions on where to eat based on presentation but if it is there, then it really adds to an already pleasant experience. I come here quite often and recommend that any fans of sushi or hibachi do too!

We came upon this family business about a year ago and have been hooked ever since. We ate at the hibachi and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and quantity of the food. The service is always excellent but the sushi is even better. We go at least once every 2 weeks and it is consistently delicious. We have ordered some sushi platters for our parties and they are always the talk of the event. I have included pictures. The staff is always friendly and greets patrons right away. I love this place and so close to my home.

Awesome. Very nice staff, great food, and fairly average prices. I got the teriyaki steak hibachi and husband got the sushi sashimi combo. Both were fantastic and fresh. Can't wait to go back. Hope locals catch on so the place has a long tenure here.
