Currently closed for renovations (8/1/15). I always really enjoy Saran. The curries and dosai and super, and the lunch buffet is a great deal. I also really love the okra.

I decided to try this place about 3 weeks ago after seeing it featured in the Northern VA Yelp email updates. I used the online system to make a reservation (via OpenTable) for me and my friend. The food was very good - I tried the chick pea marsala, the spinach dish and the okra dish. The chick peas were spicy (hot) to my liking and the okra was surprisingly good. I typically like my okra fried but this was a pleasant change. It was a Thursday night and the place wasn't very busy. We were greeted and seated immediately. Service was very attentive. I am definitely a fan. My only regret is that I didn't know about this place BEFORE I left Northern VA! #sadface.

A small restaurant in a worn down looking shopping center far away from anything, albeit nice enough inside. They also run a food truck, and I felt like it was about food truck level price and quality. It is all vegetarian, and has a wide and appealing menu. I sampled broadly. Their potato and pea curry was much better than the same dish at Flavors of India, while the chickpeas and puffy bread lacked the sinus-clearing kick and vibrant flavor I've gotten at Amma Vegetarian Kitchen. Thus, my rating will come down between what I gave those two. The dosa was nothing special; a dosa is always a nice thing but their sambar was pretty weak. I'd skip that; not like there aren't plenty of other options. It took a while for me to get takeout; close to 40 minutes from the time of my order. They were busy and a small number of staff were struggling to keep up with business, which is good for them but something to consider if you're in a hurry. They did apologize for the wait, and my food was nicely packaged (no mean feat, given the stuff I ordered). On the whole, it's certainly worth a shot if you're in the area, but not as special as I might have hoped.

Best vegetarian Indian food in Arlington! Great selection of cuisine from all over India including dosa's, pano-puri, pav bhaji and more! And prices are way lower than most Indian places.

Just terrible food! I'm never picky about food but this one takes the cake. We ordered masala dosa, dal makhni and bhindi zafrani. Masala dosa was flat, soggy and was so thick it looked more like a flat roti. And no coconut chutney with masala dosa??!!! The sambhar had no flavor except for very strong turmeric taste. And the dal makhni was not at all creamy as it should be. It had some other taste than dal makhni. The bhindi was greasy and was bad. I can cook better bhindi at home. The naan was the better of the lot. Not to mention one woman constantly yelling at the staff in the kitchen. She might probably the new owner that our server told us about. Seriously, this was the worst food We have ever had. And needless to say, we are never going back!

I thought this place was good. It looked closed from the outside. I walked in and took a peek at the buffet. I like Indian food and have eaten it many times, but I am still not super familiar with the menu and buffets get a little intimidating sometimes. The guy working was super nice and walked me thru each of the dishes (all vegetarian- big plus). I thought the spinach and chickpea dishes were the best. I was less impressed with the kidney beans and pumpkin. The samosas were good and so was the tomato soup. They brought out plenty of fresh naan that was delicious. I liked that there was raita available as well. Too often just paying for naan and raita adds another $5 at least onto the check. That being said, it wasn't my absolute favorite Indian meal ever, but it was quick, and there was a varied selection of non-meat items, and the buffet + a Sprite cost me $13. I can see myself coming back.

Good Indian food for an even better price. We could barely walk after stuffing our faces for less than $25, which is unheard in DC. We will come here again for sure! Also the staff are extremely friendly. Parking can be tight in front but other than that I highly recommend it.

Favorite Indian food in Arlington. Coming here at least weekly. Please enjoy the wonderful cheese dumplings in tomato and butter sauce. All is vegetarian. And such friendly staff!

One of my favorite hole in the wall Arlington eateries. Great buffet, great service, managed by a wonderful family. I always order an appetizer of veggie samosa and I have a mango lassi. They offer a wide range of vegetarian Indian entrees.

The food is good. One of the best vegetarian places in the area. Very friendly atmosphere. Not pricy. Definitely worth checking out.

Good news! While The God Machine game appears to be gone for good, they've replaced it with a game called Million Gods. The owner noticed me inspecting it and brought some tokens over to show me how to play. For $0.75, you can play a slot machine style game. If you get 3 Gods, you win a token which you can redeem for a prize. Curiosity satisfied, I didn't take my chances. Oh, and the masala dosai was so good it blew my friggin' mind.

We stumbled on this place looking for an Indian place close to where we were driving. Initially I was a bit confused by the menu until I realized it was a vegetarian restaurant. We started out with an appetizer that our server recommended, which was delicious but I don't think it was one the menu - samosas covered in a couple great sauces. We had the Sitafal Curry, Jackfruit Curry, and Methi Paneer. All were good but I had forgotten I am not really a fan of jackfruit. This is a solid choice for good reasonably priced Indian with good service.

Like others before me, I arrived at this strip mall location looking for the Deshi restaurant, alas, closed on a Friday night (reason unspecified). Hungry, we gave Saran a try. Alas, it's a miss. We ordered four entrees and, after a good 30 minute wait (on a not-so-busy night, as well), three of them arrived. Well, the salad was extraordinarily ORdinary; hardly worth scooping up, actually. Portions were small. We had to guess which was the eggplant dish. Everything was very blandly spiced, we had to repeatedly ask for water (which, when it finally arrived, was tap warm), and the fourth entree simply never arrived. Considering it was all vegetarian, entree prices were immodestly high ($10-$14). On the plus side, my wife praised the wine list, the ambiance was adequate, the naan and basmati rice were exemplary, but, one cannot live by bread (and wine and tap water) alone. Finally, we took home the "yummy" (their word) desert; one bite, and it ended up in the rubbish bin. Two stars might be overstating this trip (which we won't repeat). Deshi, please be open next time!

Small Indian restaurant with an excellent selection of vegetarian dishes from different regions of India. It's located in a strip mall of mostly South Asian stores along Lee Highway.

After seeing several good reviews on Yelp, I went to this restaurant on my trip to Washington DC. Don't get fooled. The food was very ordinary. We ordered four entrees -- so I tried several things. The Paneer Tikka Masala seemed to use Tomato puree and was kind of sweet. The Dal Tadka was okay. The Naan was actually sour -- which means it was left over from the previous night. Three different lassis (Mango, Sweet, Sour) were all watery at best. Did I mention that the place was more or less ramshackle. I was there on a Saturday night and there was decent foot traffic. The Kachumber was very ordinary. The only redeeming part was that the people were quite cordial and nice. I also got a 10% coupon from Yelp (which translated to less than 10% on the bill for some reason).

Quite good ... It's entirely vegetarian , so that's awesome ... Food was regular Indian food . Good portions. It's weird that they have dosas but no idli .. :-( Masala dosa filling is strange ... Not bad . Enh .. I've had better .. and worse ..

  • Steve F.

Friendly service, good menu selection (although the buffet has fewer items than some competitors), decent prices, and it's all vegetarian. Saran is one of my favorite places for dining out.

  • Mikey T.

I was very excited to find an indian restaurant in my area that sold dosas! So I couldn't wait to try Saran. Its kind of a hole in the wall, which is usually the first sign that I'll love it, however the service was a bit slow and inattentive. We ordered the pani puri app, but were let down by stale puris however the tamarind liquid was very flavorful. For dinner I ordered the Thali, which had 3 curries, samosa, naan, and a "dessert". The curries each had their own character, the tikka for example was slightly different than most others. They all had a more "homestyle" feel to them. In addition to this character, they also had a bit too much heat. Don't get me wrong, I love spicy, but this was a bit painful after a while. My boyfriend got the masala dosa, which was HUGE, the dosa itself was crispy and well made, however the potato filling was lacking in flavor and the proportion was a bit off. The sambar was tasty and a bit sweeter than most others I've had. For dessert we shared a lackluster rasmalai, and went home thinking "Ehh." All in all, an okay spot but not entirely "craveable".

  • Rory B.

Easily the most delicious Indian food in the area! I honestely think its better than Rasika. Try their chaats, paneer makhni, and baigan ke bartha! and their mango lassi is DELICIOUS! they are all incredibly nice

  • Jaren L.

I love this place. It has good vibes and a friendly staff. I really like the paneer makhni...and the buffet is amazing (available at select times). Sit back, relax, and have a mango lassi and enjoy the fact you don't have to put on your reading glasses to read between the lines making sure whether or not the food has meat in it or not.

  • Alishia F.

This hole-in-the-wall was a very pleasant surprise!! After reading the many positive "yelps", we decided to try it out today for lunch. They had a great buffet with many options at a reasonable price (about $9 per person). No need to go on - our take-away is echoed in all the previous posts. It's delish and very affordable. You should go!

  • Jelli F.

I had such high hopes. Keep your expectations in check and you won't be (too) disappointed. Food is what I imagine elementary school cafeteria food to be in India. A step above frozen indian meals. Try Delhi Club or another local indian restaurant instead.

We had the masala dosa and the Indian thali. It was very good!! Staff is super nice!! Bought s livingsocial deal for this. Totally worth it!

  • M H.

You have to really seek this place out, but for those willing, you'll be rewarded with a long menu of all-vegetarian northern and southern Indian food. We tried the lunch buffet, which had a nice assortment with aloo ghobi being the best of the six entrees. The staff is nice and very helpful. Check it out!

Saran Cuisine (formerly Saran Foods) has undergone major remodeling in the past year, becoming a restaurant with servers and tableclothes rather than a cafe with disposable diningware. The upgrade may have changed the prices somewhat, but Saran is still very affordable. The lunch buffet is my favorite. Everything is delicious and varies day-to-day. Note that the food is very spicy at Saran! It may not be for everyone, but I love it. More (plus a photo) at my blog here: smallpicture.blogspot.co…

I eat at saran all the time. The food and service are great!

  • Rani H.

This place has very inexpensive food, and the reason really is that it's a bit divey (the opposite end of the spectrum from Rasika, but not quite as ghetto as some of the taxi driver places you find in NYC). I have to mention thought that the last time I went was about over a year ago; maybe it has changed?

  • Kathleen S.

I've been to Saran for a dinner a couple of times. The prices are very reasonable, the food is excellent, and the staff is super friendly and very helpful. I really have to say that we both times we dined here, we enjoyed our meals. We didn't have the buffet so I can't speak for that, but the table service was quite good. This is a true vegetarian restaurant, no meat of any kind, not even fish. Honestly, I don't think you'll miss it!

  • Sonia P.

An all vegetarian Indian restaurant that serve cuisines from North and South India. Located in a somewhat outdated strip mall, well you can imagine the ambiance is not great but the food and service make up for it. I recommend and always get the Saran Thali, a curry sampler plate that comes with salad, naan, rice and desert. YUM

Great Indian food. My new favorite neighborhood restaurant. It's nothing fancy, but the service and food are excellent. I want to try the buffet next.

I love Indian food, but usually hate eating it in restaurants, especially the kind that have buffets. They're usually meat and rice pudding heavy, and leaving, I feel like I've swallowed a cow and a bucketful of ghee. Not at Saran. First, the service, as others have noted, is a bit weird, but in the best sort of way. The owner usually comes out and greets us with a sort of warm nonchalance, and lets us sit anywhere we want, since we are almost always the only ones there-- especially since they expanded. Second, the family. We have two deceptively small children, who can pack away at least their weight in dal, rice and naan, but they eat free. Third, the food. Saran is a vegetarian restaurant, and the things they do to these veggies is incredible. They are flavorful, substantial without being grease-laden, and authentic. I have tried over and over to replicate the pumpkin curry but it never comes close. The chana masala is great, too, as are any of the saags (spinach). Finally, the ambience. Frankly, I do not go to ethnic restaurants for ambience. In fact, if there is too much ambience, I am immediately suspicious. My rule book for good ethnic dining is a strip mall (check), tacky decor (check), bad lighting (check), and same-country grocery store nearby (check). Anyway, give it a try. It does not suck, and you might end up dreaming about it like we do.

Food was really good. I had a dosa, which I've had a real hard time finding in Arlington. In the past, I've gone out to Vienna for dosas, but Saran was much better. The prices were really reasonable, and the service was very attentive. We'll definitely be going back.

I was impressed with Saran! I drive by here just about every day and I finally decided I would go there. So we found ourselves here at about 6pm on a Friday night. It wasn't busy, but there was steady carry-out business. Unfortunately the buffet looked like it had been left over from lunch, so my wife wasn't happy. I had ordered a pumpkin dish off the menu, though, and it was delicious (sitafal curry)! I had requested a separate plate of naan so we could share; it wasn't garlic naan though. I guess you have to ask for that. Anyway, my food was so delicious but I just couldn't finish it! They wrapped everything up for us to bring home. The service was really excellent, very polite and friendly. I'll be going here again!

I was thriled to find out about vegetarian Indian food in Arlington, and since I love South Indian food of all kinds and dosas especially I was happy to see some of this on the menu.. However I have to say the seasonings taste a bit off from what I've gotten used to.. It just doesn't taste like it's made with the same spices as the South Indian food I've had in London or Chicago's Devon St. or anywhere else. The service was good, the restaurant wasn't crowded, and my dosa was crispy, but when I can make more authentic and better tasting masala dosa potato filling at home by my white self, there's just something not quite right. It doesn't matter how pleasant the rest of the meal is if the food just isn't very good.

This place is great. The 100% vegetarian buffet (and the fact it is available on weekends at dinner too) had me from the very beginning. Everything I've had there is delicious, and the selection is unbelievable -- many pages of delicious vegetarian options in the menu, and usually half a dozen entrees and some soups at the buffet. The only thing that sketches me out are the chutneys, which generally seem a bit... old. As in, they've been on other tables before, maybe since last week, and have just been put back in the fridge in between, without washing the containers. (That said, they are tasty when I can bring myself to have some.) So, I tend to avoid the chutneys and focus on the piping hot and delicious and well-priced food they bring out for me and me alone, and I've never had a bad experience.

Saran is one of my favorite places in Arlington. Friendly service and pretty good food. The price cannot be beat in this pricey area. Plus, everything is vegetarian. It is making me hungry just thinking about it.

I actually liked their old location better because the decor was even more cheesy but the chaat here is awesome and priced just right

  • J B.

This place is a great deal, and delicious! Meat eaters won't miss anything in the dishes, and 4 people can sit down and eat quite well for under $30, a rarity in Arlington. I recommend staying with the Southern cuisine... The dosais are huge and I think they were around $5, portions plenty enough for one person. Uthappans also were quite delicious. If you're up for curries, the Baingan ka bharta is very smoky and flavorful. I'd be a fan of a little more heat, though. I wouldn't recommend the buffet. I had the buffet once and I was fairly unimpressed, although I think it was late in the buffet or on a weekend because the place was quite empty and the food a bit stale.

It's actually at 5157 Lee Highway. Some unusual and delicious menu items. Quiet in comparison with other Indian restaurants. Strange service.

My wife and I tried Saran last night for the first time and found it to have very good food and to be a very good value. We shared two main courses, a very nice spinach and potato dish and a cheese in "exotic gravy" dish. I like my food a bit more spicy than my wife does and we both enjoyed both dishes. The spinach dish had a bit more heat than did the cheese one but not too much for my wife. Each dish came with a choice of naan or rice. We ordered one of each and both were very good. Saran has a short but interesting beverage list. There are several Indian beers plus the usual assortment of American brews, wines and spirits. Saran serves vegetarian Indian food so you won't find a steak there, but you will find a delicious, cost-effective opportunity to try meatless food. If you want to see how good vegetarian food can be, I recommend you try Saran. The restaurant is hidden among a number of ethnic shops in an old strip shopping center on Lee Highway just East of George Mason Drive. They are clearly working hard to become one of the top vegetarian restaurants in Arlington. I predict that they will succeed.

  • Yasmine B.

Simple, unpretentious and satisfying! As you enter this small restaurant in the strip mall at Lee Highway the ambience is calm. Traditional prints of Indian life adorn the walls, and a small photo collage of famous guests is stationed near the entrance. Saran is noted for its vegetarian fare, offering a buffet at lunch and a la carte selection for dinner. I have always enjoyed the thali, which is a medley of 3 curries, rice, a soup and a samosa. T Today I was stunned at the mammoth masala dossa with coconut chutney. This Indian crepe was perfectly cooked, stuffed with potatoes and onions - and despite its gargantuan size, it was so light that I finished it one sitting! I am definitely going back for more!

Good Indian is hard to come by and small portions of good Indian food come at a price apparently. Not only does it come at a price, it also comes delivered to your house several mins after the quoted wait time- if only the food arrived hot. At least it arrived with an apology for the late arrival. The food was phenomenal. The Sitafal Curry is a pumpkin power house with the right amount of spice and cooked perfectly without being mushy. The Aloo Mutter trumps all those versions of Aloo Mutter that I previously declared as being the best I've ever had and maybe then some. The vegetable samosa is flavorful and helps you forget the three letter word that gives them their delightfully crunchy exterior. (Begins with an 'F' and ends with a 'Y') Portions are small for the price. A $30 delivery minimum is a little high, but I was up for the challenge; I justified the money thinking that the number of items would make great left overs tomorrow. For two: Aloo Mutter, Sitafal Curry, Aloo Gobi, Kachumber Salad, Vegetable Samosa. There is not enough food for two more meals. Aloo Gobi was good, but nothing make it stand out. Cheers: Robert Palmer couldn't have said it better himself- the food is simply irresistible. Jeers: $30 delivery minimum should buy you warmer food and a little more of it. Skip the skimpy Kachumber Salad- unless you need it to meet your $30 delivery minimum. Verdict: Based on taste, my taste buds could be tempted. Based on price, I won't make it a habit.

We used Saran Cuisine to cater our wedding. Ravi was always willing to sit down and answer our questions when we would randomly stop by the restaurant (which was pretty often!) and accommodated all our requests. Ravi and his team arrived on time and were very professional. The food was fantastic-all of guests (both Indian and non-Indian) enjoyed the dishes. I would highly recommend Saran Cuisine for weddings and other special occasions!

  • Amanda M.

I have never had vegetarian Indian cuisine and it was really flavorful. I really like that they have a buffet so that you can try a little bit of everything. We were the only non-Indian people in the entire restaurant which is an awesome sign to show it's authenticity. Pros: Lots of flavor and variety on the buffet. Cons: Salad was a bit brown and red and raita sauce was almost on the sour side.

Their food is actually quite good. However, their customer service is really not very good. In fact, they can be kind of rude, which is unfortunate because the food is tasty.

Fresh ingredients and a mom & pop type feel. Very friendly staff and tasty food. The masala dosa was good and had a nice fluffy yet crispy wrap. The cheese on the panaar was really good an seemed to be really fresh an good quality. Wish I find it earlier.

I've been to this restaurant four times (most recently for my birthday) and have enjoyed it each time. I lived in India for two years and can certify that it's authentic. I'm not a fan of their buffet, but their other dishes make up for it. Some have described it as a hole in the wall--can't disagree, but so what? Yum yum--think I'll go again soon!

My wife and I gave Saran a try at lunchtime because we had business on the block. Deeply disappointed. Service was ok but the buffet was small, tired, indifferently cooked - "grim," did I hear someone say "grim" earlier? Keep on driving, to - for example - Delhi Club, Tandoori Nights, or Sangam.

Saran is by far the best Indian vegetarian restaurant I have been to around DC. The dishes are spectacular... try the "baingan ka bharta" (egg plant dish) you will want to order it every time you go there! And the best hand made rotis (phulkas) - they really give you the home made cooking feeling! The simple combination of daal (lentils), palak paneer (spinach & cheese) and roti (bread) is my favorite! The staff is always friendly and polite. I would highly recommend visiting this treasure palace of superb Indian dishes!

When i went here, all the food in the lunch buffet was stale and the dough the bread was made from had gone sour. If this places wants to save 6 pennies and not use fresh dough for bread imagine how bad the food will be. And It was. The fried fritters (bhajiya) were atleast 4 hrs old and all the salad was stale. The next morning I was not happy too. Please stay away from this place.

If you stick to the appetizers, then you are golden. I go here all the time for a snack and if i want a full meal, just order more appetizers. I have been disappointed with there main dishes.

  • Stephanie W.

After all the great reviews on Yelp I was surprised and disappointed by my experience at Saran Cuisine. It was truly awful. We ordered the Cholle Aloo Tikki appetizer. Not only was it cold (the potato patty was partially frozen), it had no spice in it whatsoever. Completely tasteless. For the main course we had Channa Masala, which we requested spicy, and Masala Rawa Dosai, a potato-filled crepe. The channa was basically in tomato sauce - again, no spice. The crepe was decent. It came with a nice sauce that we used on the channa to give it a flavor. In addition to the terrible food, the restaurant was not well heated, and almost every customer had his or her coat or scarf on. This was the worst restaurant experience I've had in a very long time.

In brief: Seemingly authentic food, probably prepared/served by family members, in a pleasant atmosphere despite the run-down strip shopping center locale. I was talked into going Saran by someone from the neighborhood, and learned from his prior experiences: A vegetarian Sikh family operates this fragrant oasis, amidst a whole shopping center looking as if lifted from any major South Central Asian city. Whether served by the younger man or the middle-aged woman, service is friendly, altho' unpolished. Special orders are accommodated. As we rolled in, I realized my concerns for the run-down location included a parking lot built before large US-market SUVs existed. I note from other reviews no one has suffered harm to their vehicle; perhaps being near George Mason Drive keeps it in the eyes of the Arlington gendarmerie. We were immediately greeted, two staff members behaving as if they recognized my friend (who claimed to have not visited "for months."). There were only two other tables seated; 3-4 parties came in after us. Responses to my wine inquiries received answers suggesting minimal wine knowledge, but, no matter, as I was thinking of the glass more as an aperitif before curry, chutney and other fiery excitement numbed my palate. The vegetable samosas arrived warm (food service temperatures criticized in other reviews were not an issue for anything in this meal.), were small-ish, with mildly seasoned potatoes & peas. The arrival of the Masala Dossa drew other diners' attention, both for the size (as long as a baguette, hanging off the plate) as well as for my ignorance seeing a "vegetable Indian crepe?". It was stuffed with onions and potatoes; my friend asked for and received additional tasty coconut curry sauce, not wasted (additional dollops on spare bits of broken-off crepe). The Sitafal Curry (cubed pumpkin cooked w/ onion, spices & herbs) retained the sweetness of the pumpkin flesh while the seasonings and onions added savory notes to the dish. We both cleaned our plates, asking for two servings of the yellow lentil "pudding," Daal Halwa, which arrived warm, with cardamom and sweet spice reminding me of soft, warm Chinese "moon cakes," but make from lentils rather than red beans. While the prices weren't college-pocket thrifty, they weren't as high as favored DC venues or two others known in the Courthouse-Clarendon area. Perhaps one pays more for convenient proximity to the Orange Line? One can enjoy a "homey" Indian meal for a reasonable price, with friendly service, an ethnic "hole in the wall" in an otherwise uninviting strip shopping center. I hope to return and try more of the ample menu's offerings.

I had a wonderful dinner here. We came here maybe 20-30 minutes before they closed and stayed 15-20 minutes after they had closed and everyone had left and the staff and waitress displayed no attitude at all. In fact we liked the Dosa so much we wanted to ask the chef if he would make us another one right before they closed and they were more than glad to do so. Great customer service most of the time the kitchen closes before the restaurant does and they rush you to get your order in. Not only is this one of the few places that serves dosa in the area I think its some of the best dosa I have had. This is a hidden gem in Arlington, skip all the modernized Indian restaurants and go here to experience home cooked Indian food.

Definitely worth going to - head's up though, it's vegetarian. That shouldn't deter you as they have tons of options. And veggies are good for you! I really liked it because 1) the food was good 2) the service was excellent & friendly and 3) the price was reasonable, especially compared to most other Indian places...way overpriced. I also liked this bonus: entrees come with either rice or naan (a whole one) so you don't have to pay extra. Nice right? We ordered 3 entrees to split: Saag, Baigan Ka Bartha, and Sitafal Curry. The Sitafal Curry was a total hit and I highly recommend! It is "fresh pumpkin cooked with onion, spices & herbs". It is a little bit sweet but a great balance of spices with the pumpkin. The Baigan Ka Bartha is roasted eggplant with onions, tomatoes and spices. That was a great dish also - we ordered it super mild so my wife could hack it but it came out somewhat spicy. Oh well, more for me. I'd steer away from the Saag. Not that it's bad, it just didn't have a whole lot of flavor too it and there are other good options on the menu. Two big tables full of the Vegetarian Society of DC members were finishing up as we got our food and they all had smiles on their faces so it must be good right?

I have only been to two Indian restaurants in my life and this was the second one. The first one was amazing, one of the best according to even my Indian friends. One of the reasons among many that the first Indian restaurant was so good was because of the generous portion size. When I got my portion at Saran, I wasn't sure if it was what I ordered or if it was some type of appetizer. I must've counted about 5 bite size chicken pieces. It was like a kids order. The food was delicious though and they provide more rice upon request. The service by an Indian waitress was also very good. I also found a hair in my drink which makes it hard to give it that extra star. I think they have a buffet serving as well and despite finding the hair, I am looking forward to trying it. Overall, a very good place to get your fix for Indian food.

I don't know what happened, but the quality has gone down hill. The food lacks flavor...not enough garlic, spice, or curry leaves. It's all very bland. Don't bother to go for dinner; only the buffet is good during lunch. Our appetizer came out after our entrees. We ordered a bottle of wine, and our server pour the entire bottle in four glasses. My sister wasn't planning on drinking that much, and my brother-in-law wasn't drinking due to a cold. The server is nice, but she needs some training.

I didn't know it was ONLY VEGETARIAN until I looked at the menu, which offers suggestions or favorites marked with "***". I ordered the Paneer Makhani and my friend got the Sitafal Curry. PANEER MAKHANI: cubes of cottage cheese in a savory and rich tomato and cream sauce... I enjoyed it. SITAFAL CURRY: pumpkin with onions and herbs; however, the onions were very overpowering that you could barely taste the pumpkin. I wouldn't order it again... MANGO LASSI: one of the better ones I've tried Overall, the restaurant is cute and the service is prompt/friendly. I'd suggest Saran to all of my vegetarian friends!

Food lacked authenticity. Dosa was just ok, and sambar wasn't even real sambar dhal. And they charge you extra for more sambar which no indian restaurant should ever do.

The food was great, and the service was excellent too. My only gripe is that there is no warning anywhere on the outside of the restaurant that this place doesn't have delicious meat anywhere on the menu. If we had known that, we would have gone elsewhere. That being said, the food was quite good. It was just missing...as I said, delicious meat.

Tasty food. However, after coming I realize that I could never be a vegetarian. And for the price, I think the portions could be bigger. Would probably be a much different review if I had gone for the buffet, but I can't see myself spending this much to be left so unsatisfied again

A vegetarian's dream! While the strip mall setting is initially off-putting and gives the illusion of a run down row of restaurants, Saran does not disappoint in its culinary offerings. My fiance and I ordered the Aloo Gobi and the Mutter Paneer to share. Both dishes were very flavorful with the right amount of spice. The naan was soft and the mango lassi delicious. We drove from DC to try Saran and were not disappointed. If only it were closer we would eat here more often! We will definitely return.

We just moved to Washington and were trying to find a good pure veg restaurant. This restaurant came as a life saver! ( seriously we were so tired of looking for a good restaurant). The food here is amazing. I will highly recommend to all vegetarians!!

So let me start by saying the food was generally tasty. My issue is with their delivery service. After placing an order, and tipping 20% on my credit card, I received a call saying they will not deliver "all the way up" to the 20th floor because it will take 15 to 20 minutes to do so. It's not like I live in a walk up; my building is new and has 6 working/fast elevators. And their aversion to delivering their delivery food was not online. After waiting 40 minutes I receive a call from the delivery guy's cell phone saying he's downstairs. I head down (this takes less than a minute, honest) and he's not even there! I wait a few minutes and the food finally arrives. And it was cold. Overall the food was pretty good but this doesn't entirely count as full service delivery. If none of this would bother you ignore my review. Also ignore it if you don't live in an apartment building as they will probably deliver all the way to your front door. No promises though.

Hands down some of the best Indian food in the area. The food is vegetarian or vegan but you won't miss out on flavor! The buffet is a great deal and if you can't stay, take out is a great option. I always go for the Cholle Bhatore, a light puffy airy bread and a rich full curry with chick peas. Desserts are available too. Give this place a go!

Depending on what type of food you order here, this place is a hit or a miss. South Indian dishes are not great here. But the North India dishes are the best in the area, especially compared to those high priced pretentious Zyka in Clarendon and Delhi Dhabba in Court House. My review is based on North Indian food. Its not greasy and feels very home made. I think this is a family owned restaurant so don't expect professional quality service here. They just have one one waiter most of the time and she's sweet but not professionally trained. Even so, its not horrible service at all. The ambiance and everything is pretty authentic. If you're missing home cooked meal, or just want some simple and very delicious indian comfort food, this is the place. I haven't tried any North Indian dishes here that I haven't liked. And its all vegetarian so this place is my playground! Oh and they have the BEST, I mean the BEST gulab jamun here. You can tell its not from a packet. I can usually only eat 1. But at this place, esp if we are having the buffet, I can easily eat 2. They're just so good. Like I said though South Indian dishes are something I will avoid here b/c the sambhar has a strange taste, masala in the dosa taste like jeera alu subzi, and dosa is not thin and crispy...rather oily. And another downer is the location. Its in a neighborhood where I don't want to go for dinner often, esp late sunday night. Once I called to pick up food, they said there was a robbery in a store nearby so the whole street is blocked and you can't pick up nor eat in!! Yikes! I wish they would move to Courthouse - then I'd be here every week! But even so this place is our favorite!

This is a lunch review Ambience: 3 Fine, i was only one in there but it's a nice, small restaurant with wood floors and bar in the back. Food: 3, buffet style lunch, food was hot, not too spicy. Everything tasted good, and remember, it's vegetarian (which I'm not). The naan bread was warm and fresh. Only thing I'd change is labels for the food (I wasn't sure what some of it was), and maybe more selection. Location: 3 In the strip mall at the corner of 29 and George Mason. It's an ugly strip mall but parking is usually OK at lunch time and it's convenient to downtown Arlington. Price: 5 Great, $10 for all you can eat buffet Service: 3, fine, no issues.

Decent simple vegetarian Indian food. The food is generally good tho sometimes the dishes are little off. I have had food catered from them a few times and the quantity has been good!

I came for the lunch buffet at Deshi Spice but they were close for Eid, so I looked down the strip and found Saran. The place was basically empty--not a good sign, but I was hungry and, after a quick scan of the buffet, decided I didn't want to search anymore for lunch. The hot naan, brought to the table, and the chutney were tasty. Every entree from the buffet was meh--watery, boring and not flavorful. The entrees off the menu might be better. I can't say anything about those dishes.

  • Row Bear F.

Cool that it's vegetarian but the sambar was subpar. The chutney would be laughed off the streets of Chennai. If you want N. Indian food, it probably isn't too bad. But if you are going to have S. Indian food on the menu you should do it justice.

We came here unexpectedly after the place we were wanting to go to was closed. It was unexpectedly delicous. I was a bit disappoined to find out they are vegetarian only, but delightfully surprised when the food came out and I completely forgot I wasn't even eating meat (I am a hopeless meat lover). The cauliflower dish with the ***"very recommend" side note is awesome - incredibly garlicky and flavorful. The South Indian cuisine had by my friend was supposedly delicous as well. Asie from the good food, what I really loved about this place so much was the giant table spread of various Indian desserts upon entering the restaurant. I don't know if they have them all the time but they had at least 20 different small desserts from which you could pick and choose which ones to try. Naturally, I went overboard and got one of each. I'd say about half of them were really good and the other half were pretty gross, but I'm still happy I tried them. Steer clear of the white balls, which taste like gritty and mealy sweet mozarella cheese, and instead spring for the donut-looking thing soaked in cardamum syrup. Delish. Service was incredibly friendly too. Go there.

The owners of Saran are from a small minority of Sikhs who don't believe in eating meat so unlike most other vegetarian Indian restaurants, the best things on the menu are from the North and not the South. I ate here with my family and we restricted ourselves to the "Northern Style Entrees" and "Punjabi Specialties" sections of the menu and thoroughly enjoyed everything. It was also the first time that my baby niece was being taken to a restaurant, and the staff was very accomodating My sister in law had previously come and had the dosa and said the sambar was particularly disappointing.

I had heard a lot of good things about this place from my husband. In fact he and his friends would rent a car and come all the way from Washington DC to eat here through their college days. Hence, we headed there purely to eat their famed chaats. While I had the papdi chaat, hubby dearest had the aloo tikki chaat. Both were quite good considering most Indian restaurants are unable to re-create the Indian chaats as well. I wouldn't say the chaats were bang on but they definitely came close. Will definitely try to go back to try the main course.

Inconspicuously located among a stretch of "ethnic food" shops, Saran Indian Cuisine appears quite humble and, perhaps, even mediocre , from the outside. However, guided by the high praise of previous yelp reviewers, my husband and I, with Mother-in-Law in tow, thought that we would give Saran a try for dinner and I am quite glad that we did. Not only was the food delicious with each dish providing us the opportunity to experience a different Indian spice profile, but the service was also really outstanding throughout our entire meal (and good service is as equally important to the quality of the food in my opinion). For our meal, we each ordered one main dish and split the accompanying rice and/or naan that comes "gratuit" with each order. This probably would have satisfied us just fine, but we are tall people with big appetites, so we also put in for a second order of garlic naan (are first order was also garlic naan for a small fee more-plain is free). My husband got the Sitafal Curry (pumpkin), my Mother-in-Law opted for the Baigan ka Bartha (eggplant), and I went with my old Indian dish standby, Channa Masala (chickpeas). Was this the best Channa Masala dish I have ever tasted? No. Was it delicious and did it make me happy? Yes. Throughout dinner, we each sampled a bit of one another's dishes and we all concluded that all were wonderful and unique and that each one of us preferred our own particular dish to that of the others-to each their own, I suppose! This is probably more like a four and a half star place, but I left satisfied and happy and wanting to come back (both for dinner again and to try their lunch buffet)-even my picky and hard-to-please husband is looking forward to returning! See you soon, Saran!

I'm so glad that I heard about this place through a friend. First, as other reviewers have said, don't be put off my the run down looking strip of stores where this place is located. Also, note that, while it no longer says it on their sign, Saran is 100% vegetarian, which is exactly why we went there. I had been searching for a good veg Indian place since Nirvana closed downtown. We started out with an appetizer that our server recommended, which was delicious but I sadly can't remember the name, as well as an appetizer sampler. The sampler was good too, but everything was fried. My two dining companions and I split three entrees: the curried pumpkin, the eggplant and the okra. The pumpkin was good, the okra was great and the eggplant was incredible. I would go back frequently just to get any of these. Be forewarned that the paratha was very greasy, but the naan was yummy. I also really enjoyed that they serve both Northern and Southern Indian food, so you can get your chana masala AND a dosa, if you'd like. The server was also very nice. My overall impression? Really good food for very cheap. Now that I've found this place, I plan on visiting it often.

One should definitely try their samosa chaat, it has the same Indian taste. We ordered samosa chat, shahi paneer n naan. Everything was tasty n well cooked. There was a surprise content with it too. It was a pick up order n it came with tiny box of tasty pickles. Thanks Saran..We will come again :)

This strip of stores along Lee Highway always looked a little sketchy to me. I tried the Caribbean place on the corner - it was just so-so. The tailor a couple doors down (a Yelp find) was ok, but expensive and I think he's out of business now. I knew there had been problems and the "nightclub" that opened up in one of the other places. So, I figured all the stores were "low-rent" and that's what you could expect. However, on the recommendation of some friends, we tried Saran and I was pleasantly surprised. A new sign on the outside certainly rehabilitated their image, and the interior was clean and pleasant. We tired a number of dishes and most were very good. I'm terrible at remembering names of Indian cuisine, so I can't remember the specifics, sorry. My only complaint is that the portions seemed a little small for the price. My favorite Indian place in Arlington is still Delhi Dhaba, but I'd go back to Saran again.

I have been to Saran several times. They have a very extensive buffet with all the favorites you look for in Indian foods. My family has had several catering services done by the restaurant (200+ persons) and they did a flawless job. Great food and service. Will definitely be back!

NO MEAT HERE. JUST VEGGIES. Now that that's out of the way... We came here at dinnertime on a weekday in September, and it was super awkward because we were the only customers there. The entire time. We had a nice masala dosa and some mango lassis and a cauliflower-potato curry dish, and some naan and raita. Everything was fine, no complaints about the food. It was just unnerving to have no other customers. Did they know something we didn't know?

This review is late, I meant to write it but forgot...my family and I ate here over a year ago, twice in a few months. We ate from the Punjabi specialties menu....it was fantastic! We were happy to find a vegetarian Punjabi Indian restaurant! My parents loved the authentic tasting food and my kid loved it as well! We are overdue for another visit! Hope to eat here again soon.

This is our favorite Indian restaurant in the area. We are both vegetarians, so the fact that everything is actually vegetarian and not faux-vegetarian is a plus. There are many choices on the menu and you may be slightly overwhelmed at first. I ended up ordering many dishes that weren't familiar to me and the choice paid off. The jackfruit is scrumptious - not overly sweet as you'd imagine a dinner centered around a fruit could be. The veggie navratan korma is our favorite, but the dal makhini ranks a close second and always seems to be included in our orders from here! Just keep in mind that you will need to order rice separately as it does not come with your order. If you order appetizers, they will also give you sauces, which are fragrant and super tasty.

"Meh" is the right word for this place. First the good: the service was very attentive. The paneer appetizer was very good as were the pumpkin and the okra entrées. However, the rose lassi was awful. It was bright pink and was super sweet with zero rose flavor. The consistency was watery, which I actually don't mind in lassi, but in this case it made it all the more like strawberry Quick (except strawberry Quick tastes good). The bread (onion kulcha) was clearly home-made, but was neither sufficiently chewy nor onion-y. I also agree with another reviewer who said the chutney was bad. It was super salty and lacked the complexity one normally expects from a good chutney. I was fine with the portion size, which is on the small side, but most places give you a little more for the same price.

This is one of my favorite places for Indian food in Arlington. First off, they are cheap! The food is very decent. Some dishes are a bit off, but they also serve dishes that are hard to find other places in the DC area. My boyfriend really likes their pav bhaji, but my personal favorite is the Makhi ki Roti, Sarsoon ka Saag. It is buttery yellow corn meal flatbread served with mustard greens curry. They also serve salted laasi with it as an added bonus. OMG... I absolutely love this stuff. I always ask them to make it spicy because I prefer it on the spicier end. I don't recommend coming for their lunch buffets. They are really mediocre. Come here for good south indian food and some Indian specialities.

I have been a regular customer here for about three years since I moved to Arlington and discovered this place. Full disclosure: Indian food is my favorite and I'm a vegetarian, so I may be a bit biased here. This is a gem of restaurant. It is family-owned with great service, a great neighborhood atmosphere, and of course, an authentic, all-vegetarian cuisine. I like to joke that I feel like Norm from Cheers every time I walk in! I've taken many friends -- from Indian cuisine foodies to meat-and-potatoes virgins -- and all have come away completely satisfied. In fact, many of them have taken to frequenting this place on their own. This is a great neighborhood spot with delicious vegetarian Indian cuisine. They use very little oil as well, so it always has the healthy and "home" taste of a freshly cooked meal. I highly recommend their thali plate. Great place for a week night, a low-key dinner-and-movie date night on the weekend, or even just an intimate dinner with close friends. Very sad to have moved from Arlington. I'll miss this place.

Saran had some nice dishes. I enjoyed the pumpkin curry and okra dishes. The eggplant was nice too. Although the staff said they could make the spiciness of the dish to our liking, this wasn't the case. The breads, nan and the others were a bit stale. The lassi a bit watery and sweet. Overall we had a nice time at Saran.

The food is great, but a little small. We ordered three dishes and the server gave us three exactly same small plates with food in them. We were confused whether they are one dish or three dishes. The answer is three. After all, the taste is good and the price is reasonable:)

  • Francisco M.

Very tasty vegetarian Indian cuisine. The vegetable samosas were well-seasoned, but it was clear they'd been prepared earlier in the day and were just okay. The paneer tikka was tasty, but they only give you the cheese with whatever sauce it absorbed and no extra sauce (the first time I've ever seen this); they were very tasty and clearly more fresh than the samosas. The Sitafal Curry (pumpkin cooked w/ onion, spices & herbs) was AWESOME. I could have ordered another one and gobbled it down. The na'an was very fresh and quite delicious. The Jackfruit curry was also very tasty and spicy. For dessert we had the rusgulla (sweet cheese balls in rose water) and it was tasty. I think our waitress may have been new because she was a bit clumsy and very slow, but very warm and friendly. I will definitely be back.

Fresh, Fast, & Yummy! Masala Dosa was great! Their Sambar had cauliflower in it, but other than that, it was definitely spicy and just how I like it. Samosa was fresh, pani puri and the lassi was also very good! Service is always friendly and they have always seated us immediately.

I had the buffet here twice. The food is as grim as it gets. If you don't mind eating saag without any paneer, then this place is for you. In my view, the only thing that Saran has going for itself is the price. You can find Indian vegetarian food that is far more delicious elsewhere in the DC area. Maybe you are better off ordering from the menu?

4 words: They've got it right* This place is in the middle of a South Asian ghetto that I didn't expect to find in the abyss that is Lee Highway. But somehow this little restaurant, in a land lost to time in Arlington, has absolutely spectacular food, and it's cheap. 100% vegetarian grub. I've had their palak paneer, and cannot praise it enough. Next time around I tried the Thali - which translates to 'platter', and is a combination of two starters, four or five small portions of different sorts of curry, a raita (flavoured yogurt), rice, bread and dessert. Again, it was fantastic and highly recommended. I am also assured that they have a decent lunch buffet over the weekend. Now a word of caution, when I said it's a shabby neighborhood, I meant it. Don't be turned off though, the place is perfectly safe, just looks dodgy. I'd just be a bit careful where I park, no one's going to nick your car, but they might scratch the door a bit. It's nothing personal, they've just constructed the parking like they would in New Delhi, and well nothing says authentic Indian like walking out to find a dent in your door. * Except the naan, that's not very good. I suggest shelling out the extra dollar and getting the parantha or kulcha.

This place is walking distance from my so I eat here often. The food is great Northern and Southern style vegetarian Indian cuisine. I've tried a few different dishes, and never had anything I did not like. I usually stick with the Palak Aloo , and Samosas though.

  • Mira B.

We were fooled by the yelp ratings. We had their lunch buffet and the food was terrible. Samosas were cold, the bread stale and smelled funky. All the side dishes were watered down and the lettuce in the salad was brown. The waiters did not bother to check on us or even fill water. There are better restaurants out there, this place deserves zero stars.

I'm anti-vegetarian,* so I was pissed that I didn't read the Yelp reviews more closely before embarking on a BFF lunch here. *Well I'm not really, but if I had my druthers, there would always be meat involved. One star for lots of chats, and another for dosais and a third for working magic on veggies. I got the papri chat (ha ha Welshie) and it was a bit sweet for me. The dosai I loved; it was my first and I was glad to experience it. We also got the buffet, which I would never get again only because I'd rather eat the chats and dosais here. We way over-ordered and wasted a lot of food. P.S. Super cute waiter.

I've always liked Saran, even when it was a tiny hole in the wall. Now they've expanded, have lunch buffets and more dishes than before. They also offer delivery (or at least, they usually do :). The quality of the food at Saran is very impressive. I've always liked Indian food since I was very young and Saran really tastes like the real thing with the right balance of flavors and spice. Saran's owner is very friendly and personable. He's helped us out with picking entrees and deserts as well as ensured that we got outstanding service. I've always loved Saran's samosas and their various chat dishes. They also have a great selection of appetizers, dosai and soups. Five stars!

I am so excited to be reviewing Saran Cuisine :) I went for the 4th time this week. Up until then I was going to give it 4 stars, but I had a dish this week (Paneer Tikka Masala) that I just can't stop thinking about and felt it truly deserved 5 stars. I've had the Palak Paneer twice, and while it was tasty, it was too spicy for me. (The 2nd time I should have remembered to tell them to cut out some of the spice.) They can make anything as mild or as spicy as you like. I have also gotten a potato dish (can't remember the name) and my husband always tries something different. His favorite was Chana Masala which is chickpeas, which he said was also worth 5 stars. The prices are great too, and the staff is very friendly. Oh, we've also had some of the daal dessert- that was fantastic, too!

Tiny hole in the wall on Lee highway. Went for lunch. They had a lunch buffet so i tried it out. Looking at the choices, it seems they are quite limited in comparison to other Indian eateries. Usually most Indian restaurants will have up to 10 dishes in their buffet but i didn't see that here. Anyhow, I sampled the palak paneer, aloo mirch masalsa, eggplant masala. First impressions.. I think the food was okay, but not great. The staple dish of most veggie Indian restaurants is the palak paneer. I found it here to be bit on the watery side, and lack of cheese cubes in the dish. Taste was bit bland as well. I did enjoy the aloo mirch masala, which basically is a mixture of potatoes, veggies .. It was on a lightly spicy side, but plenty of flavor. very well made. The eggplant I thought was again on the runny side, and lacked the same taste and consistency i usually find in other restaurants. for dessert, I had the warm gulaab jamaans. Tasty! Overall, it would say, for those who don't know much about indian cuisine, it's a great place to try out veggie delights.. For the experienced palates, there are better choices out there..

My wife and I just ordered delivery from this place for the first time, and were blown away. We're not vegetarian, but, regardless, this is now our go to Indian carryout/delivery place. The food was phenomenal - we had a spinach and peas dish, pumpkin curry and chana masala (chick peas). I mentioned on the phone that I like spicy food, and they heard me and spiced accordingly. All of the dishes were spicy and absolutely delicious. Also, this place has great breads - we tried to paratha stuffed with cauliflower and thought it was probably the best Indian bread we've ever had. Great.

India is the birth place of Chicken Tikka Masala and Curries. Indian foods are prepared with a blend of finely mixed spices quite popular across the region. The spices develop the rich taste in Indian food enough to boggle your mind. The ever-increasing fan base of Indian food around the New York city is steadily increasing because of the large number of Indians who traveled to the land of dreams. The Indians also brought their very own vibrant, colorful, and aromatic authentic dishes for the people in the West.
