This is a hidden gem of Annandale! Duck Chang's is my family's go-to restaurant when we want to celebrate and eat Peking duck. Many places we've tried has had dry pancakes or dry/small-portioned duck slices, but this tops it all. We are such regulars that whenever we go, the chef knows to save the duck tails for my dad (the family that owns it is super friendly too and makes great conversation with us). If you try this place out, I recommend getting the Peking duck with the mu shu on the side to add to your roll. This place isn't located where the main road could see it, so it isn't usually crowded whenever we go (which is nice because this is a hidden treasure of a restaurant and we enjoy our privacy). Atmosphere is pretty dark with the dimmed lighting, and the tables are set very close to each other, but that's not that big of a deal since the food makes up for it!

Came here around 930 pm on a Friday night and they sat us down right away. I haven't been here for over 7 years! This place looks a bit run down but they had been in business for the longest time. They definitely need some renovations. My boyfriend and I ordered half a duck, some chicken lo mien and egg drop soup which was around 45 bucks in total. The duck has more flavor here than the Peking Gourmet Inn but I would've asked for some recommendations for their other dishes. The half a duck actually was very filling. I wish they had cucumbers to go with their duck though. Definitely an authentic restaurant!

I am a die hard Peking Gourmet fan (located in Bailey's crossroads) but Duck Chang's is an excellent second choice because of its convenient location and you don't have to wait hours or need an rsvp a week beforehand. I also appreciate that they have half ducks on the menu because then you can also order something to enjoy without dying of overeating. Their duck is pretty solid here and they have the nice crispness to their skin. The meat was tender and not oily at all. They serve green onions with the duck which seems kind of old because they were really crunchy but whatever it was just onions. We also ordered their general tso's chicken which you can't go wrong with. Perfect amount of breading and meat and the sauce was yum. The service is always great here and the lady serving us was so sweet. I also like the huge wall mirror because it makes the restaurant seem less stuffy because of its small size. I wish the lights were a little brighter but all stuff I can overlook for some good duck.

The Peking duck here is very very good. I was craving SnoCream Shavery and ended up trying this place for the first time because it's basically across the street. I'm glad I did. I started with the wonton soup which was very flavorful and came with those fried crisps, which I really enjoyed. We ordered half a duck and Mongolian beef for two people and had leftovers to take home. I was impressed at the quality of the Peking duck and will be returning.

Loved the Peking Duck. The half duck was a very nice portion and could feed two on its own. Throw in soup and another entree (excellent pork in plum sauce), and we both had lunch for the next day. The stand out part of this meal was the accommodating and friendly service from what seemed to be three generations of Changs. The manager went over his recommendations and engaged my kids in discussing their reading materials. The food came out fast. We even got a demo on how to assemble the duck. On the decor. The restaurant is the definition of a mom and pop shop. If you can't get over some 80s era decor, you don't deserve the food and experience.

Great Chinese in the K-Town (aka, Annandale)? That's what I thought the first time we decided we needed a Chinese fix after moving here. Admittedly, we don't eat Chinese delivery that often and almost never eat it out, but when we needed our first fix we decided to get takeout from here. The food was excellent, but I never got around to reviewing. Yesterday, on a rare kid-free night out, my wife and I were in search of Korean BBQ. However, being that it was a Saturday in Annandale, every place was packed. So in lieu of another place to eat, we decided finally eat in a Duck Chang's. What fortuitous misfortune! Needless to say the food deserved every bit of the five stars I'm giving and every bit of the great reputation this restaurant has. We started with the flaming appetizer platter. While the wontons spareribs were nothing special, the chicken wings were fresh and flavorful, the shrimp was perfectly fried to still have a light taste, and the egg roll was one of the best I've had. For entrees we had the Mongolian Beef and the General Tso's Chicken. The former was cooked to be almost melt in your mouth tender, with enough sauce to give the beef taste but no drowned it. The General Tso's Chicken was similar in that it was fried to the point of being done but still tender and the sauce complimented the chicken as opposed to covering up a band product. Finally, for desert we had the taffy bananas. This curious dish involves breading and frying bananas, covering them in a sweet sauce, then dousing them in ice water to make the sauce hard. Both my wife and I were initially scared about losing dental work if when we started to eat it. We ended up by thinking "who needs dental work with something this good". Finally, the service was fantastic. The staff was always there to pour more water and ask if we needed anything. Best of all, they were willing to make recommendations and dissuade us from something that might be better on another day. Next time we will try the Peking Duck for which they are famous.

I couldn't have been more pleased to find this gem. Due to gluten intolerance and celiac, he went over the entire menu with us in detail. Food was delicious, service great! I'm going to be a regular now! Thank you!

Duck was just as good as Peking Gourmet and more duck pieces. I feel like they carve more of the duck meat off the bone at this restaurant vs. peking gourmet wastes a lot of meat. $39 for a whole duck and they give you more wraps too. This restaurant looks more like a take out restaurant rather than fine dining so don't expect much when you walk in.

Wonderful lean duck that's not to fatty. This restaurant was king of the castle twenty years ago serving up the best duck in the area. Competition happened with other duck houses and then this place lost its luster. The decor hasn't changed since then and the food quality hasn't gone down either. Great value added since they keep there prices at a very reasonable level. The triple delight and duck (obviously) are a must here.

I come here for one thing- peking duck. My family has been going since it opened. I have only been going for a few years, but it is always good. The duck skin alone is worth going for.

Good service, however the duck was very disappointing, super dry, and not crispy, the roasted pork appetizer tasted stale, and beef with snow peas was nothing special, same quality as any takeout restaurant, small portion for the price.

Came here on a Tuesday night after working out and we were hungry. We ordered the duck of course and for our appetizers we had soup: egg drop, seafood and a spicy soup with pork, cabbage, mushrooms etc. that was really good. The duck was cut up and brought to our table and we all attacked it like vultures. I can't remember the last time I had duck, but all the memories came flooding back. I think the last time was a Peking Gourmet (PG). I think the duck here is pretty good. We also ordered a side of bok choy to go with our meal and it was a nice balance. I think this is a great place for the value as I know (PG) can be quite high in terms of cost. So, I'll definitely be back.

  • Erica Y.

Their Peking duck is $36.95, vs. Peking Gourmet Inn's $42, so it's just a $5 difference, not a huge saving. However, if you don't want to deal with PGI's wait, crowd, and high priced Americanized Chinese food, this is a good alternative. I still think PGI's duck is slightly better (I think I like the duck meat better at PGI, although getting smaller and smaller with each visit). But I like not having to plan ahead and come to Duck Changs whenever and get a very good and bigger Peking duck. Other dishes I tried are bang bang shrimp (not a lot of shrimp for $15, but tasted pretty good) and eggplant (pass, not good). I think I'll just come for the duck in the future, when I have a craving. Service is good for Chinese restaurant standard and restaurant is fairly clean (very dark though). It is an old restaurant but as long as they serve good Peking duck that's all I care!

I've been coming to Duck Chang's for 17 years now. I live in LA now and came home for the holidays, immediately I asked to go to Duck Chang's for my first meal back home. The food has stayed amazing throughout the years. I've always been in love with the Orange chicken ( make sure to ask for it extra spicy!) However my all time favorite is the Duck. I would highly recommended it. You can order either whole or half an order. It comes with thin pancakes, to wrap the duck in, plum sauce and green onions. Very very tasty and can be light. Bang bang chicken or beef comes out on a hot skillet and has a peppery taste that is different than your usual Chinese dish. For dessert ask to order the toffee bananas. Or toffee strawberries. The bananas are fried and then covered in hot toffee! They cool the bananas in ice and then serve. It's a must try! Five stars :)

I was here last sunday. Their peking duck was as good as peking gournment inn without reservation and wait time for order which was a plus. We try their red wine pairing also, it was pretty good as well.

We stumbled upon this restaurant on accident and were pleasantly surprised! Most Chinese food makes my hands swell the next day, and to tell the truth it makes me a little sick for a few days afterwards....but NOT this place! Although, the first thing I ordered was not what I expected- I think that I have been eating "Americanized Chinese food" and didn't know what the dishes were authentically to taste like. I ordered the Human Chicken and it was delicious, as well as Sha Cha Chicken and Chicken and Cashew...all of these dishes are cooked excellent and are sooo tasty. Also the rice is really good brown rice! We have been back twice since our first try and have enjoyed each time. Additionally, the owner's are pretty cool too, they always seem pleasant and chatty- but not in that "Okay, get away from my table now because I came here to eat and you are blocking that" sort of way....just hometown chatty. Worth all 5 stars!

I went to this place my first time one evening prior to their closing time at 9:30. When I entered, they were already staring to close and vacuuming the place. The guy told me that take out is still available. So, I ordered the ma pa to fu to take to my hotel since I didn't want to pay $18 for a half a duck just to eat it later. I wanted to eat the duck there via dining in, not take out. The ma pa tofu was ok, nothing special. I asked for a plate and utensils. They guy kinda looked at me like 'why?' I explained to him that I don't live here and was staying at a hotel, that's why I needed the plate, etc. He then joked and said they were free, which was ODD?

I have eaten here with my family for almost 40 years (yes 40) since I was a kid. We were one of their earliest customers and are still regular patrons to this day. I have since moved to MD but always make it a point to come here when in town (or at least get take out), my parents still eat there often. We have taken nearly every family member and friend here at least once, and many multiple times. They will always be known for their amazing Peking Duck (one of the first places in the DC area to have it on a regular menu without 24 hr advanced notice, dating back to the 70s). Wrapped in the pancakes with plum sauce and scallions... yum! Always great to watch Peter prepare it as his father did. Kung Pao Chicken extra spicy is pretty much my regular dish, they do it in a unique way. Pork in Plum Sauce, Moo Shi Pork/Chicken/Beef, Sweet and Sour Pork/Chicken and Szechwan String Beans are all great. My parents get the whole Crispy Fish and Sha Cha Chicken often. Roast Pork, Cha Dumplings, Spare Ribs etc all great appetizers. Pu Pu platter is fun with a group. Wonton and Sizzling Rice soups are great. I can go on and on. Peter, along with his sister and mom have done a wonderful job carrying on the tradition and legendary father's legacy for whom the restaurant is named (and I had the pleasure and honor of knowing). They have since expanded the menu and gotten in to catering as well.

I've only fallen in love once, and it felt a lot like going to Duck Chang's for the first time. The Peking duck was ridiculously good, crisp and juicy. They serve the duck with skin and meat (as opposed to the traditional skin only). At slight extra cost, they will make 3 courses, including duck bone soup and sautéed duck with bean sprouts in addition to the wraps. The duck bone soup, just do it. The restaurant has wines by the bottle-- perfect for a low key date night. You can ask for the duck bones, too. I should note that service was incredible and would be very easy for non Chinese speakers. Everyone is ultra friendly and helpful.

I'm from the west coast and had never had Peking duck. My in laws wanted me to have the best so they brought me here. It is amazing and that is the only way to describe it. We also had the lemon chicken and that was the best I had ever had as well. I will definitely come here anytime I am in town. Thanks Pete for the amazing service and food!

By far one of the best, authentic Chinese cuisine restaurants in the DC area from a master, teaching chef. My favorite Peking Duck between Mark's Duck House and Peking Gourmet Inn. All the dishes are excellent and made with precision. Moo Goo Gai Pan, Lemon Chicken, Orange Chicken, Bang Bang Shrimp, and many more.

Best Americanized Chinese food in the area! This place is at a different level then other carryout Chinese food. Family owned for more than 40 years and they take pride to serve you with the best, and they are good at doing so that you can taste it out of your food. My favorite is the Sha Cha Beef (Chinese BBQ sauce, slightly spicy) lunch platter, the meat are tender and juicy, vegetables are fresh and crunchy, the sauce is rich and MSG-FREE and with vegetable oil only! And the lunch platter comes with soup and egg roll! ($10) Their signature duck is delicious, we love it, the kids love it... Skins are never overcooked or burn, nor fatty; meat is a little dry but that's the nature of roast duck meat, and it goes very well with their hoisin sauce (home made?). Mr. Chang is another reason we are coming back, very charming with great sense of humor, we love that man. I know it sounds like an advertisement but that's how I feel, to word. I work in Annandale so I have dine at this place for years.

This is a small Chinese restaurant with a great service. Everyone was very friendly there, so it made food taste better :) Here are my recommendations: Duck three ways - If you love duck dishes, this is what you need to order here. You can taste three different types of duck dishes- the duck soup, the Peking duck, the duck with bean sprouts. Deep fried tofu - crispy and tasty! If you don't like sweet dish, you might not like this one. Personally, I like other Peking duck place more, but this place is a good place to try when you want something a little different.

My parents love this place. I've been here many times with them. From the outside I'm thinking wtf. The building looks old and run down. You walk inside, and the decor is kinda outdated but it still has that cozy atmosphere. We are always greeted by the owner and her son who are always so friendly. My parents always get the Peking duck. It's actually pretty good. Very good actually. My first time I went, I ordered the shrimp lo mein. I was kind of taken back when the "lo mein" was nothing but shrimp, some veggies and spaghetti noodles. Spaghetti noodles? But then I was reminded how this was more an American fusion Chinese restaurant. I guess meaning "Americanized Chinese food?" Whatever. If I order lo mein, I want real lo mein noodles. Not spaghetti noodles. Second time going with my family, I ordered the bang bang shrimp. Comes out on a hot sizzling platter. That was good! Brother ordered the general tso chicken. Not gonna lie, it was probably the best general tso chicken I've had. For me to say that, it's a good thing. I'm not a fan of the sweet chicken thing, and most general tso chicken I've had was way too sweet with too much breading. At Duck Chang's it was quite tasty. Ok, so here is the reason I am only giving it three stars. I mean service is great, the people are friendly, but I made the mistake of ordering the curry chicken one time. I was sick for days. It wasn't the normal chicken curry I used to getting at other Chinese places. Ya know....yellow in color with a light curry flavor. Here, it was a dark brown very oily curry. It was clumpy and upset my stomach right away. Could not eat it. I was sick for days. Thinking it was bad chicken or maybe the chef screwed up, a few mom the later I ordered the curry beef. Big mistake. The same dark brown clumpy oily curry. And again, I got sick. People, NEVER ORDER THE CURRY! You will regret it! Lesson learned. They have good spring rolls too. Overall, good place. Not the best, but then again, not the worst. If you decide to go, highly recommend the Peking duck, general tso's chicken, bang bang shrimp and spring rolls. Their menu is very large so have not tried other things yet. I've heard the duck three way is really good. Have to try that next time. I actually do like the Peking Duck here better than at Peking Gourmet. The friendly people who own the place and work there makes our trips there more worth while.

Peking Duck : 5 Stars. Way, way better than the famous Peking Gourmet Inn on Rt 7. Each ingredient is housemade and their flavors are balanced and delicious. Other food : I haven't had much else. It is americanized chinese. Service : 5 Stars. Always excellent, knowledgeable and attentive service without being intrusive. Atmosphere : Didn't notice. Too focused on eating as much duck as possible. But really... this place is run down and there is little to no atmosphere. But who cares when the duck is this good. I come here to eat AMAZING Peking Duck. I don't care about anything else because their duck is sooooo good! Even if the staff were evil and mean I wouldn't care but they are actually super nice and provide excellent service --- some of the best I have ever had in a Chinese restaurant. I've eaten here at least 10 times so I felt it was time to review. Hope this helps you if you're obsessed with duck as I am.

Great half duck with wraps, cabbage and sauces!!! Good portion of duck that gave me leftovers to take home. My dog was happy I shared. Yummy egg rolls. Good service and good place to eat. Hidden behind Pep Boys.

There are quite a few restaurants that have so called Peking duck in the area, but I normally would just give people an "oh well" face when they ask me about the taste of it. Having grown up in Beijing certainly gave me a picky tongue when it comes to my favorite Peking Duck. This place, I have to admit, surprised me. It sure isn't the same taste as you were in Beijing of course, but I'd say it can almost reminds you of Beijing already. And I say that's pretty awesome enough. Definitely recommend this place to people who like Peking Duck. Try the bone soup too :)

Delicious Peking duck and hot and sour soup. The staff is friendly and sweet and really hard working. We were there on Christmas and it was packed-- so go early on popular days. The location is a little dull and the decor a little dated - but it's perfectly cozy.

I am aiming this at you food allergen folks - Mr. Chang is COMMITTED to gluten free being a delicious and easily available option. If you mention your allergens, he comes to your table and sits with you and goes over the menu, finds out what you like and don't like, and tailors a menu just for your tastes, and it's gluten free. They have gluten free General Tso's chicken, which, is amazing. It's breaded and tastes JUST LIKE BREADED CHICKEN that you used to love and you miss? Yeah, like that. The wings are "breaded" too but gluten free and amazing, and there are at least 20 items on the menu that are gluten free. Now, for people who eat anything without allergy fear, my husband and friends all love the food there as well and have all kinds of dishes. The twice cooked pork and peking duck come highly recommended. And the atmosphere is one of a family. They work as a family and you feel like a guest in their home. It's really a wonderful experience. We moved away from Annandale but dang, we still drive back there just to go to Duck Chang's. THANKS! (be careful, don't go on Monday, that's their day they're closed! :) )

Opened in 1975, Duck Chang's has survived the times. The current owner is the son of "Duck Chang" and is adeptly continuing the family tradition of Peking Duck. I didn't like what little I had of the other things on the menu, but I'm rating this place for its duck strictly. The duck is closed-oven (versus hung-oven) roasted for five hours. The pancakes are handmade, high quality, and authentically thin. The spring onions are fresh. Also, definitely get the duck bone soup--its broth is aromatic, savory, and it foreshadows the duck well. The establishment is not pristine, but I came here for the duck not the frills. Service was great. Meeting the owner, I can testify that the man takes his duck very seriously. He saw this place in its heyday when it had four-hour waits and his commitment will see this place through the current era of Latin/Korean-dominated Annandale.

I'm giving Duck Chang's 4 stars, but I'm conflicted about it. We went for the Peking Duck and based on that alone they deserve 5 stars. It was truly excellent; juicy but not greasy and full of flavor. The owner carved the duck at our tableside at our request. (He explained that due to the small size of the restaurant he usually carves them in the kitchen). His skills with a knife and a duck are a thing to watch, so try to talk him into it. He serves the crispy, tasty, tasty skin and meat separately and deftly scrapes the excess fat off. The crepes are very fresh, warm and soft and made in-house (as it should be). The only disappointment was that they didn't serve cucumber with the scallions that accompanied the duck (a small complaint, but I like the added taste and texture of cucumbers with Peking Duck). So why only 4 stars? Aside from the excellent duck, the restaurant is a depressing place to eat. It's very small and dingy, and it's in desperate need of new... everything. Also, the owner seems to use the table closest to the front door as his office, so the first thing you see when you walk into the restaurant is a person using a laptop at one of the dinner tables. Not very classy, especially if you're telling people that the duck is usually carved in the kitchen because of space issues. With that said, if you are looking for great Peking Duck, and décor doesn't matter to you, Duck Chang's is a winner.

They don't deliver, even though the Yelp profile says they do. I was about to pass them over but then decided last minute to just order take out (I live less than 10 min away). Ordered General Tso's chicken and Mongolian beef, and I can say with full confidence that we will become regulars, my wife couldn't say more compliments about the flavor balance, and I just couldn't say anything, my mouth was full until my plate was clean. We will be trying the peking duck next!

Gluten Free Chinese food!!!! I stumbled upon this place when doing some Google searches to see if there were any places around here that by chance had gluten free Chinese food and I found Duck Chang's. I stopped by one night to try the GF General Tso's and it was quite delicious. I will be back to try something else!

If you want cheaper and more convenient peking duck that pretty much tastes just as good as PGI, then this is the place. I read in the other reviews people whining about how the duck is not carved right in front of you but rather served right on a platter for you instead. So what? At least it's still good. Duck Chang's only has spring onions and doesn't have cucumbers, but it's still good. I also felt like you got more duck than PGI for a much cheaper price (whole duck that is). As for the other entrees we ordered, they were actually enjoyable. I'm tired of Chinese food and having the same things taste the same. But here, the flavor is on point. We ordered bang bang scallops and filet fish in hot/spicy sauce. I actually was a big fan of the filet fish in hot/spicy sauce. It definitely had a kick and the fish filet itself didn't disappoint. The service was quite fast and very friendly. As for the interior, people are right, maybe Duck Chang's does need to remodel a bit. Seems a little cramped but I still didn't mind. I'd return here. Now don't take those words lightly, because I don't like returning to any Chinese restaurants.

We ordered Peking duck for Thanksgiving. Knowing they were closed, we picked the duck up the evening before. The amount of care that was given to packing the duck and the detailed instructions on how to reheat it was fantastic. We followed the instructions the following day and duck instead of turkey was a great hit! This will be our go-to place for duck. Planning on going back to try other dishes here.

Blah food for a a not so blah bill. We ordered staples: steamed dumplings, duck and a seafood dish. The dumplings were normal, nothing special. My duck tasted like day old, dark meat chicken. The sauce was blah and they only offer white or brown rice. My husband ordered a shrimp and scallop dish that was also just blah. Nothing exciting or tasty about the sauces or textures. Even our volcano drink was uninspiring. We visited this restaurant two years ago, and remember it being much better. Tonight was so unremarkable that we will not return. We would much rather turn the corner on backlick, drive a few blocks and eat at schechuan star, next to giant. Their ambiance is nothing to write about, but all of their food is great. I cannot recommend Duck Chang's.

Super-authentic duck! Great staff! Family business! Incredible food! Not as fancy and polished as some other purveyors of Peking duck, but it is their specialty and they do it correctly. They sell so much duck, that you do not even have to call ahead to get it. Other places require a 24hr heads-up to accommodate your lust for waterfowl. The owner is on the floor every night greeting guests. He is as friendly and personable as they get. If you ask he will tell you his dad's story and how the restaurant and his dad got their name. It is fascinating to hear where he came from and how he came to America and founded the restaurant. Spoiler: the senior Chang was once the chef to royalty in Asia. As for those who are bellyaching about not witnessing the carving of their duck table side, all you have to do is ask them to. Peter carved the duck for me the first few times, but we came to an understanding that I could get the tasty fowl down into my face quicker if I forwent the show and allowed it to be plated and brought out. So, option B is my choice. If you want they will even make your first rolled-up ducky goodness for you to show you the correct way to do it. To those looking for a "total dining experience" with fire juggling, knife tossing and exotic fake Asian decor, go to Beni's or PF's (no relation). This is a family small business where the message is on the plate and the experience is for the palette. It is in the interpersonal interactions with the owner, his mother, and the staff. It is in the personal service and attention from someone who genuinely cares, and not just about clocking out and going to a dorm-party. Honestly, do yourself the favor and go allow yourself to binge on the sinful, decadent treat that was once reserved for Asian royalty. Oh... And everything else is awesome too and hand made with love.

The Chinese food here is definitely better than most, although it is still pretty Americanized. But at least they do it well! You get alot of food if you do one of their dinner specials, including a huge, delicious egg roll! The duck is also good, but the skin can be too fatty at times. Overall a good place for solid Chinese food in Annandale, although I would go elsewhere if you want really excellent duck (Peking Gourmet Inn!)

The interior is dated, old, and dark. They charge you on every single thing such as the duck pancake. They don't tell you until you have seen the bill. A bowl of rice only comes with certain dishes.. our party of 3 had to share a dry bland rice. If you want more?? NOT FREE! The silverware, cups, and plates are old and dated. The food was Chinese-American style, tailored to unknowing palates, with tons of MSG. You will feel a desert-like thirst after eating the food.

Decided to try this duck place after a friend of mine told me where it was. Upon entering the establishment you are warmly greeted by an elderly asian lady. The place has seen better days and is in need of a major renovation. As the name states their specialty is peking duck. We ordered a whole duck for $33 comes with the hoisin sauce, scallions and pancakes. Much to may dismay the duck wasn't carved out in front of us but instead was already served in a plate all sliced up. This takes away from the experience of eating the duck. A no no. The duck meat was dry but the skin was still crispy. My guess is its been precooked since morning and had been left in the warmer too long. The other dish came out very late and we were already full from the duck when the other dishes were served. No timing whatsoever. So we had to take it to go. A quick run to the bathroom gave me a preview of what the back side is like. Its kept intentionally dark to kept prying eyes from noticing the depraved condition its in.

Great duck and everything else on the menu is way better than peking gourmet Inn. This is my new spot for duck

Duck Changs is literally the BEST Chinese restaurant. I never had good Chinese food before moving to Virginia (sticky sweet mall stuff). Now I have been coming to Duck Changs for 25 years. Its a family business where Mom greets everyone upon arrival. The duck is spectacular, but so is the sesame chicken with spicy peanut sauce, the pork with fresh hot pepper, shrimp bang-bang. My daughter grew up on chicken lo mein from Duck Changs. Their pan fried dumplings are unsurpassed, every other dumpling pales in comparison. The cold cabbage is excellent, a nice wine list, generous drinks. 5 star highly recommend.

Yummy! The Peking duck is excellent. We ordered half a duck (about 16 dollars) and duck fried rice total bill was $30 with two sodas. The peking duck was crispy, juicy, and all around very good. The duck fried riced smelled so good and it was good as left overs. I wish they put some salt in it but other wise it was really good also. I would definitely come back. The service was really good. they were really attentive, nice, smile, and always saying "enjoy your meal". Its a nice family restaurant and i'm all for supporting family restaurant.

Best Peking Duck in Northern Virginia. Don't even try to mention PGI to me - talk to the hand. This place has been doing Peking Duck since before it was cool. PGI may carve the duck at your table, but it tastes worse than Duck Chang's and costs way more. "Wah wah but they don't carve it at your table" - seriously some of you Yelpers crack me up sometimes. Highly recommend the Volcano alcoholic beverage for two, as well as the sample platter. If you like hot wings that are actually hot, you will love Duck Chang's - I was actually struggling to finish them because of the heat, and that almost never happens to me! Dessert: their banana dessert where they caramelize the bananas or something in a fire at your table and then drop them into ice water - can't remember the name of it but it ROCKS!!!!

I introduced my friend/coworker to Duck Chang's for lunch on a weekday, since I had remembered coming here in the mid 90s when I discovered my love of peking duck. My friend is a big fan of good Chinese food, so expectations were high. Yes, the restaurant is in a run-down strip mall off the main road. It certainly doesn't give the impression of high quality dining, I will admit. Walking into the restaurant, yes I will also admit to its dated decor and dark atmosphere. As I said to my friend as we walked in, don't judge a book by its cover. So why does everyone rave about the duck here? Simple: it's amazing. The duck was exceptional back in the 90s when I first started going here, and it's still held up; in fact, I've had it at about a dozen other places in the tri-state area and NONE hold a candle to Duck Chang's (aside from their sister site, Peking Duck Restaurant, on Route 1 in Alexandria). The duck is closed-oven (versus hung-oven) roasted for 5 hours. Everything is made by hand, fresh, in the restaurant. The pancakes are handmade, high quality, authentically thin (not thick!), and served warm. The spring onions are fresh and shaved/sliced by hand, not machine. (I've never had cucumbers with my peking duck, so the lack thereof is not a disappointment to me.) The hoisin sauce is the perfect consistency, flavor and tang. The duck meat is tender and juicy, not at all greasy, and the skin is thin and crispy. I couldn't find a piece of fat on either the skin or the meat it was carved to perfection. I ordered the half Peking Duck portion, and it was enough for two meals, easily. Duck Chang's give you the largest portion of meat and skin than any other place I've been to. (I've heard they 'll even give you the remaining duck bones for your dog or to make soup!) Okay, the duck carving debate. When I went there in the 90s, the original owner, Mr. Duck Chang himself (yep, that was his legal name when he naturalized to this country because of his world-renowned reputation for the dish!) would bring a little cart to your table and carve it right in front of you. There was novelty and showmanship to the presentation, not gonna lie. Now, instead they carved it in the dining room area (not in the kitchen like others have mentioned; maybe they heeded your reviews). Regardless of the lack of fanfare, it was expertly carved. Like I said, not an ounce of fat could be found. Just like the sizzling fajita skillet you'll see at some Mexican restaurants, I think you should care less about the "theater" and more about the quality of substance. They feature a very extensive menu. As a first try, my friend and I ordered the friend wontons, egg rolls, and fried dumplings. Warning to vegetarians, egg rolls are not just veges here so stick to the spring rolls. Wontons are a combination of pork, beef and shrimp my friend read on the menu - they were very crispy and tasty. And I just love their dumplings, so that was a must for me. For entrees, my friend ordered both orange beef and beef fried rice. Huge portions, he'll have enough for a second meal too. Aside from a few pieces of beef in the fried rice that were less than tasty, he said it was overall very good and the orange beef was delicious. We were stuffed, so no room for dessert. Though, I do admit the carmelized banana dessert looks like something I'll have to make room for next time. During our meal, Peter Chang, the current owner and son of Duck Chang came over to our table to see if everything was okay. I was relating some of the history and lore of the restaurant to my friend, who asked more questions of the owner. The place was established in 1975 and has stayed in the family for 40 years. It is the last standing original business in Annandale, a landmark among the predominant Korean and Latino businesses in the area. What I knew from my previous trips here, there have been SEVERAL presidents who have dined here or sent their secret service detail to pick up Peking Duck from here. Peter said that there have been other high-profile clientele (celebrities and dignitaries) who have dined/ordered from here as well. Duck Chang's has a relationship with the Hay Adams and Four Seasons hotels in DC as an exclusive caterer for affairs serving Chinese cuisine. They have won countless awards, Washingtonian Best Restaurant, Zagats, etc. Longtime customers have him cater their private affairs, going as far as to fly he and his staff to Florida for an event! That goes to show you of their loyal following of customers. We learned just how accomplished a chef Duck Chang (Sr.) was back in China as well as here in the US, and by all rights Duck Chang was the first establishment in the DC area to offer Peking Duck and to put it on the menu without special advanced order. To this day, everything is prepared very "old school" without cutting corners or succumbing to pre-made ingredients or mass production. This is the "real deal", and a "must try" for all Washingtonians.

Thanks to Yelp, we found this wonderful Chinese restaurant. It is the most authentic Chinese food we've had outside of China. Between three of us, we had two chicken and one shrimp dishes. The flavor was rich and fresh. And the service was wonderful and friendly. We were celebrating the Lunar New Year at a festival in Falls Church and might make dinner here an annual new year tradition, even though we live almost an hour away.

Review for the Peking Duck only! I came here for the duck and duck I got. Tasty duck at that! If you don't want the crazy unpredictable wait even with reservations at that other very popular duck place in town and don't mind the drive (a little further out from DC). This mom and pop restaurant will hit your duck spot! Nothing fancy schmancy but there is gooooood duck here!

We had combination Fried Rice and Lo Mein and Orange Chicken. The cashier was really nice and friendly. We ordered for carry-out. Before eating her, I had given up on Chinese Food, but after eating at this place, I like Chinese Food again. Definitely will recommend it to other people and will go back for more.

Duck! Duck! Duck! My parent's use to bring the family here back in the 80's. For a family of four, we would always order wonton soup, fried rice and TWO Peking ducks. That's how exceptional the duck was and still is. Eating the duck last night brought back good memories. The duck meat was so tender and the skin was so crispy. Add the hoisin sauce, wrapper, and spring onions, you now have Peking duck perfection. There was not one table that did not order the duck. Besides the quality of the duck, Duck Chang's give you the most meat and skin out of any duck place I have been to. If you ask, they will even give you all the remaining duck bones as take out to make duck soup at home. They do not cut the duck at your table, but they do it in the dining area. If you want to see the duck cut, ask for a table near the cutting station. If you still have issues with not having the duck cut at your table, then you should get some mental help. It's just a duck being cut up! The service was great as usual. Peter (Duck Chang Jr.) and his mom take the time to talk and get to know their patrons. It's a family atmosphere. The decor is dated. They have been there since 1975. It's a typical authentic Chinese restaurant. If you want better decor, less quality and more expensive food, go somewhere else. To me Duck Chang's is a historical landmark to Annandale. I wouldn't change a thing. Would you change the decor to George Washington's house?

Didn't want duck but instead got the buffet which isn't a buffet but rather a sampling menu. The soups and fried chicken were fantastic, egg rolls were overstuffed with cabbage and not so good, the wonton was average, the Kung Pao chicken and broccoli beef were excellent, fried rice was good, and the sweet & sour pork was just ok. Next time we'll get some duck but we left satisfied but unimpressed. The staff was outstanding though.

Very delicious and authentic duck! The best part is customer service , the owner is very friendly and tentative. I was very impressed with this place , I would definitely recommend for you to try if you are in the area.

Their peking duck is absolutely delicious! The skin was crispy with no fat. The meat tender. Compare to Peking Gourmet Inn, it was just as good. Here they don't carve the duck in front of you, but in return you get a more reasonable priced peking duck. The other dish I had was bang bang tofu. It was okay. The service was very friendly. The decor is very much lacking. This restaurant needs serious remodeling.

First time trying this place last night. I ordered three entrees (traditional meals) and an egg drop soup to go. I was disappointed to discover that only one rice order was included for three meals. The rice wasn't the good rice you would normally expect but rather brown rice. The food was ok, nothing that would compel me to go out of my way to order again, and nothing that makes it stand out from other Chinese restaurants. What I found most disappointing was that this mediocre meal cost me almost $60! Next time I will make the extra mile drive to Peking in Falls Church.

My Chinese restaurant of choice when I am in the DC area. Unfortunately I can only comment on one item on the menu as it is so amazingly good, I have never ordered anything else. Peking Duck. That's it. Peking Duck. There is no need to get a menu or question your selection. It is delicious and will not disappoint. The decor, not good. The place is barely above a hole in the wall. The wait staff is attentive enough, nothing to write home about, but ok. However, all of the aforementioned is forgiven because of... (I will give you one guess here). That's right... the Peking Duck. Give Duck Chang's a chance. It is a hidden gem.

I don't know if I could ever come back. I've been here for few times, but every time I try, the food was so bad. I ordered Kung Pao Chicken today but have to throw to the trash caused it was so watery and sweet like a desert, peanut was expired that destroyed a whole taste, and chicken was tasted so bad from inside like they never marinated. Also, I was so disappointed because there was no other vegie except green onion, chicken and peanut, however, mostly green onion. So, I don't know what other folks say, but to me, this Chinese restaurant is a NO NO.

Hellllo Peking Duck Cali girl flies over VA for Duck Chang's Peking Duck. Okay I don't fly there just for them but whenever I am in town I HAVE TO STOP BY HERE! I go to VA about once a year and my sister lives about an hour away from this place but I still make her take me when I am staying with her. Last time I was there I went there twice! The duck its cooked perfectly! Not dry, doesn't smell anything like duck but still had the that yummy duck taste, and of course my favorite part about the the duck was the crispy skin. They seriously cooked it really well. They cutted the meat of the bone right in front so you can see it. fresh deep fried duck yuuummy. The duck a good but everything that comes with the peking duck is what make it soooooooo delicious. the actual wrap that they give you nice a warm, perfectly thin and nice and round so it is easy to wrap the duck in. They have this dipping sauce, I think it just housin and some other stuff that they mix with it, but still really good. It actually balance the whole wrap and duck altogether. The also thinly cut fresh scallion/green onion ends which gives it a kick. My 5 years old nephew is a picky eater...by picky he just doesn't like to eat or he doesn't eat a lot of anything. When he comes here he eat until it full and he still would want the last piece of the duck! And that is saying a lot. This place apparently been around for a while, and the son the the original owner has taken over. They are sweetheart. My brother and sister always have conversations with them and they always bag the duck bones for us so we can let the dog have a piece too. Wonderful staff. I know there are other places around the area that i have never tried but I heard this is the original and its the cheapest. So why waste my time else where right? I do have some complaints. I am very particular about what bathrooms I use and definitely sucks knowing that I have hour car ride back to the house. Its a small old restaurant and they do keep the place really nice but it wouldn't be a bad idea to give the bathroom a make over. Also I did order something here that was not the peking duck and absolutely would not recommend anything else but the peking duck. But since the peking duck here is soooooo good 5 stars. Yelp says this delivers, any chance the delivery can make it ways to Cali?

This place probably rates in the 2 & 1/2 to 3 star range. I say this as some of the food sampled wasn't so great, but the duck was superb. I have read other reviews about the poor quality of the duck and I must disagree with those based upon my experience. In addition, this place did receive recognition from the Washingtonian one year after another in the early 1980s so one does wonder,...what happened? Did something change so dramatically OR did better restaurants sprout up serving more authentic Chinese food. My party and I ordered a couple of appetizers and 1/2 a Peking Duck and 1/2 a Szechuan Duck. The appetizers were average at best, although the tofu with century egg & scallion was not only authentic, but delicious. Honestly, I think this restaurant should stick more with its namesake - Duck. The Peking Duck was perfectly cooked and sliced. Not much more to elaborate on that as the wrappers, hoisin sauce and scallions are pretty standard and difficult to screw up. The Szechuan Duck was also perfectly prepared and the dipping sauce for that was absolutely delicious. One thing I did note was that there was a number of local customers that were familiar with the owner by name and ordered your standard fare Chinese food. This was in my eyes the enigma to this establishment. Clearly these were loyal customers that had been coming for years, but they were ordering items that anyone could make and this restaurant excels at the duck and the not so standard dishes. As the restaurant was far from crowded, it was clear that it had to continue to serve the moo goo gai garbage just to keep going. The one thing that is really disappointing about that is that in doing so, it prevents this place from being a great duck restaurant.

YUMMMIE!! I love the peking duck here. I love the way they make it and it taste soooooo good. We ordered also the chinese broccoli very fresh! Shrimp with vegatables yummie! and last is Shi Jil shrimp & scallops, Oh so spicy so if you don't like spicy please tell them to ease on it. Service is awesome. Water was filled up immediately and always asking how is everything. Peter the owner is so polite and friendly. All I can say is Great job Peter!! Awesome peking duck!! And you can't beat the price. Very inexpensive!!!

Giving 3 stars because of the duck and the homemade pancakes that go with the Peking duck . The lady is super nice and very hospitable and we requested something not on the menu they made it for us.the reason for only 3 stars is the fried rice that usually Chinese really excel in was not good , but wii definitely be back for the best Peking duck much better then Peking gourmet ,where waiters have an attitude problem. The owners here are super nice and prices very reasonable.

Service wasn't the best but the owner came to save the day. We then got excellent service. Now on to the food. The appetizers were extremely good!! We ordered the combo appetizer dish (I forgot the name) which included: egg rolls, ribs, fried wanton, shrimp tempura and fried chicken. (2peices each) and a lit up charcoal flame in the middle for show. For our main entree we ordered the duck. Needless to say this duck was well cooked. Nice and juicey meat with the skin being nice and crispy. The duck is the way to go here. Amazing Chinese place in the heart of Annandale which is more Korean joints then Chinese. Excellent food and I will definitely be back for more.

the only thing I ate here was the peking duck. and it was good. dont get me wrong, and for the price, prob the best duck you will find in the area. $33 for the whole duck. which fed the bf and i until we were stuffed. their shells are pretty good. but because i'm so used to peking gourmet inn, i felt like the duck rolls were lacking because there was no cucumber or the hot peppers. they did give me some hot pepper paste which i smothered all over the shell and it was pretty decent. i would almost rather pay the $7 more and go to peking gourmet inn. they cut the duck pieces much thinner and i think overall nothing beats that place. but duck chang's comes pretty close in terms of just taste alone for the duck.

This place has an all you can eat lunch "buffet" for 8.95 where they actually make your food fresh and bring it out to you when you want more! All you can eat Chinese without risking mushy garbage all over your plate is a great idea in my book. The folks working here are really nice, but don't make you feel awkward if you're reading a book alone in the restaurant, unlike a lot of Asian restaurants, where they sort of hover over you if you're the only customer. If you check the website and like the weekly buffet specials, I'd say check it out.

Definitely the best chinese food I've eaten in this area. It's nice that the General Tso's chicken actually has lots of chicken as opposed to other restaurants that contain mostly bread and fat. The Beef and Broccoli is also the best I've tasted in this area. Finally, the duck bone soup and duck are both prepared well. I would gladly choose this place any day over the Peking Duck Inn which seems to focus more on aesthetics than actual food quality.

I was happy to try Duck Chang's after grabbing one of their takeout menus while running an errand at Super Pets a while back. There are several different duck preparations as befits the name. There's a big picture of Duck, the man, on the wall. They have a website: duckchangs.com . In 1975, they became the first restaurant in the US to serve Peking Duck, apparently. Sadly, the patriarch died about four years ago, but his son greeted us and took care of us and was a great host. We were kind of bummed that they have shark fin soup on the menu ($19.00), but I guess that shows you how traditional this place is. We didn't actually feel like duck. We had a delicious appetizer of pan fried dumplings which came with a really great sauce. This was actually appetizing...it reminded us of the excellent pierogies we'd had on New year's, it wasn't heavy and just made us hungrier for our entrees. We decided on these dumplings (they also have Cha dumplings, which have an asterisk indicating hot and spicy) over several other interesting appetizers, including Chinese pork roast, flaming plate for 2, and fried duck livers. I got beef with chili peppers, which also has tons of stir fried onion. I like tons of stir fried onion. It says HOT (all caps) in the description on the menu, and it means it. You would be insane to order it and ask them to kick up the heat on it...it is plenty hot the way it comes out. I like HOT. I got serious head sweats and then felt some endorphins respond to my body saying "mouth on fire," but I loved the half I ate there and later the half I took home (with excellent, lightly fried rice). My girlfriend got the tastier, less incendiary but still nice and spicy crispy yum yum pork. The name says it all. Crispy, sweet, savory, spicy...and outrageously yum yum. Don't feel like yum yum? You could always try it bang bang. or sha cha or shi jil...or even Mongolian style. This is a serious menu, and I can't wait to try some other dishes. Huge props on the basis of just one visit, but I get the feeling Peter Chang makes sure his place is consistent and reliably excellent.

I can't believe I've neglected to write a review of my favorite neighborhood Chinese place! When I first moved to this area, I spent very little time searching for a good Chinese restaurant that used fresh ingredients, good quality meat and non-sweet sauces. Duck Changs never fails me--for Chinese take out, it is excellent. The manager of the restaurant is very friendly and actually remembers you. He will chat with you and offer free drinks while you wait for your food. If you are eating in the restaurant (which is small, and typical Chinese restaurant decor) the service is very attentive and friendly, without being obnoxious or pesky. Now if only they would deliver...

firs time i've ever commented on yelp. but the owner and maybe his wife (?) were SO welcoming, friendly, and nice that when i sat down i didn't even care if the food was good. but it was. mom got the duck, dad got the hunan beef, i got kung pao chicken, and an order of fried rice for the table. everything was fabulous. the decor leaves something to be desired and the location (right next to a laundrymat and superpetz in annandale)

authentic. home style. ducky deliciousness. fantabulous service. complete. I'm only going to complain about the skin...this restaurant is near a perfect 5 stars, except I get peeved when I see any traces of duck fat on the skin. If I can feel even the slightest chunk fat in my mouth, I'll politely spit it back in my napkin. *shudder. I know it's nearly impossible to remove traces of fat when they "skin" the duck, so my complaint isn't going to warrant against the overall quality of the food. It just simply can't. If you have not personally tried or have had duck before, I'd aim for Peking duck. It's one of my only favorite ways to eat it...and the restaurant offers a tons of varietals of it. This place is tucked away from route 7 and nestled in a quaint little shopping plaza in Annandale. Stiff competition with Peking Gourmet Inn which is just a few miles down the strip...which I have found to be highly overrated. My love for this poultry will override duck fat any day...so duck chang's I won't hold it against you.

My obsession with chowing down on birds probably started during my Sesame Street watching days. As a kid, I wondered what it would taste like to cook up Big Bird. So as an adult, I can never pass on the chance to eat duck, chicken, or any other bird product. And on a related note, I've always wondered if Snuffleupagus would make for a good burger. I've lived in the vicinity of this restaurant for at least 20 years and have never gone in. Basically, I am dumb. I went with half a Peking duck. It was pretty good. The manager carved the duck and even took the time to scrape the fat off the skin. I don't think the duck is as good as Peking Gourmet but it makes for a good substitute if you're jonesing for duck and don't feel like dealing with Peking Gourmet (i.e. the crowd, the parking, and their lack of a logical reservation system). There was a plenty of meat and onion for the rolls. My only complaint for this dish was that the wraps were too thin. I like a thicker wrap. I also went with the beef and broccoli dinner combo. The beef and broccoli was pretty good, very heavy on the beef. The rice was meh, and the egg roll was meh. The hot and sour soup had a good mix of meat, mushrooms, and bamboo but lacked flavor. It was pretty bland. My main gripe with the combo was that it was 15 bucks. A lot of the prices are on the high side, although the price of the duck is comparable to other places. I ordered take out but service was still good. The manager was really cool. The inside is pretty dark, and they should probably add more lighting. When I do come back, I'll probably stick to the house specialties or aim for coming here during lunch. Still kicking myself for not trying this place earlier.

OMG! The food was awful. I'm new to the area but c'mon how do u mess up Chinese food? We ordered a smorgasbord of food from here starting with their Flaming Plate, bang bang shrimp, combo fried rice, general tso, and mapo tofu. Not one dish had a redeeming quality. I didn't bother ordering any duck because the reviews weren't consistently good. In summary, I will not be coming back here.

Duck Chang's has been in Annandale since about 1975. I just tried it for the first couple of times. I've had an eggplant dish, the Sha Cha Lo Mein, some dish with tofu and fermented duck eggs that was funky and good, the Peking Duck, and a few other dishes here. I enjoyed the food; it was fresh and yummy. Lots of Chinese restaurants have "duck" in their name, but very few restaurants at all do a great duck. This is not one of them, either. Their Peking Duck is edible, but not the special gourmet treat that you may be expecting. Order something else, or just make the duck one of the dishes, not the centerpiece. I believe the old man passed relatively recently and his kids are really running the place now; perhaps they will do a little renovation. However, I was comfortable. And the service was perfect.

Amazing service, wonderful hosts and delicious food. The pan fried dumplings are amazing and I could eat a meal of them alone. The hot and sour soup has just the right balance of zip. Try the Shrimp Pepperada, Pork in plum sauce, or Sizzling delight. And if none of that appeals to you, the highly rated and award winning duck should.

I have read most of the reviews here and, those of you who have mentioned that the place was great "back in the day" are right. It is still an excellent restaurant but does need to be re decorated, refurbished. I used to come here regularly while in school in the late '70's-early '80's. There were literally lines out the door and one almost always had to wait for a table. It was truly a "mom and pop" restaurant when it started. The father has passed away and it is now run by the son, Peter, and his sister. The mother is still there and seems to act as the hostess/maitre d'. The rude waitress that was mentioned in one review was an aunt. She was rather abrupt but comical in her own way. She has since "retired", so we were told. The duck is their signature dish. It is almost always fantastic but tonight the skin was a bit over done and the fat wasn't always removed from it. The menu is quite large actually and they probably should cut it down a bit and improve the quality and presentation of the remaining dishes. The "Sizzling Rice Soup" is fantastic. I have been all over the world, including Hong Kong, and have never been able to get the soup like they make it. It is the best. All in all it is an great little find and neighborhood Chinese restaurant. It needs to be updated/modernized. If they did that and advertised a bit, I'm sure that their busy days of yesteryear could return.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
