Most overpriced ice cream I've ever bought. Bought three small, one scoop servings for our kids and two sundaes for my wife and I. $27.00 Tasted like any other ice cream around. Total tourist trap.

Absolutely delicious! Great selection but ridiculously priced. Be sure to have cash on hand so you don't get charged extra for using plastic.

Food ====== $4.50~ Frozen Custard Tasted fake, not so good. Ended up throwing it away after three or so bites. Frozen custard to die for? Rita's Italian Ice, mmmmm. Decor ======= Old timey, a little run-down, wooden benches with red cloth for seating Service ====== It wasn't that busy, I asked for a small, a size which I did not get, and when the mistake came up at the register, I didn't get an offer to fix it to the size I wanted and I didn't get an offer to pay the size small price. I would have walked away, but I was the one that dragged my little party into the place captivated by the thought of frozen custard on a decently sunny day. Any crowd that builds up seems more to be a result that they're conveniently by the wharf and on the 7, not becuase of flavor and certainly not because of service, and as other options go, Pop's Ice Cream looks uber busy all the time and yogurt may or may not be the schtick. Extra! ====== - Credit Cards Accepted - 5% Discount for cash payment

This place has awesome raspberry sorbet. my dad had peanut butter fudge. My mom tried it but she liked raspberry sorbet better and the price was great. It was 8.50 for both ice creams also very friendly staffs

Nicest people let me use the restroom after waiting in the freezing cold for 2 hours on new years eve. Thank you!!!

i really liked the flavor of the ice cream. ordered a regular with two scoops - toasted almond and caramel turtle fudge. both were creamy and delicious. definitely want to go back and try the pistachio. the decor could stand to be upgraded, and their "smoothies" are not really smoothies. but at least the ice cream is yummy. would definitely come back for after dinner splurges!

Came to get some dessert for the family and wasn't disappointed! The Creamery sticks to the basics and seems to get it right. No frills, just great tasting quality ice cream. We got coffee oreo (Amazing), lemon custard, strawberry, and vanilla. Every ice cream snob knows that the way to tell a good ice cream place is to taste their vanilla and this place had rich creamy vanilla with none of the after taste you sometimes get with lesser brands. Their product was definitely quality. We came on a Saturday evening and there was a line out the door when we got there, but it moved really fast. Not a long wait. As far as price, I'm kind of surprised that so many people have mentioned how high they are. Its Old Town Alexandria and the prices here are on par with the other two ice cream places in close proximity. We will definitely be coming back next time we're in town

Overall: Delicious way to beat the heat (and you will -- it's chilly in here!) We wandered in on a typical 1500 degree + humidity day and were greeted with frigid, cold air = happy right off the bat. The line wasn't long and the flavors were plentiful. I ordered the coffee w/ oreo and it was a perfect mix of real coffee flavor with a cookie crunch. (Kind of reminds me of a frappuccino Starbucks used to make back in the day.) Service was good. I've read comments about the cost being too high but... you're in a pretty touristy area so I'm honestly not surprised. It's still cheaper than the Ben & Jerry's store around the corner, too.

I tried a scoop of mango ice cream on a sugar cone ($4 for a small). I liked it a lot. I originally came in for the frozen custard and then realized that it's just soft serve ice cream (that they usually have at buffets). The shop itself is a bit dated but the ice cream is good and the workers are very nice and friendly.

Terrible. My husband just ordered shakes for us. Unfortunately his was not very good - in fact it was mostly milk and very thin. Mine was thin, but not as watery as his. He politely asked the manager to thicken his and was rudely refused. He then stated he'd rather not have it and would like a refund if they wouldn't improve it, but was again was refused. We threw it away. Quite disappointing that a $7.25 milkshake was so terrible and that the service was too. So many other great options in Old Town, don't waste money here.

After dinner up the street, I always come here for dessert. The orange chocolate chocolate chip is my favorite, but all the flavors are good. It's used to be cash only, but they take credit now. :)

  • Dawn R.

A great little ice cream shop on King Street. Homemade ice cream or frozen custard in a variety of flavors. We had coffee oreo and orange chocolate chip. The orange chocolate ice cream tasted exactly like the chocolate oranges that you can get around Christmas time..yum! The space is a bit small inside but, if it's full you can always walk to the waterfront and enjoy your ice cream on a bench.

The man and I ventured in here for ice cream on a Sunday night! We were both craving ice cream cones! We strolled in and checked out the flavors, I ordered cookies and cream(my fave) and he ordered chocolate orange! They were so good! They hit the spot on a hot Sunday evening! Definitely going back!!

A great ice cream place. I love their black cherry ice cream. The small waffle cone was $4.25, a bit pricey. Service was OK. I gave them 4 stars because they wanted to charge extra if I used a credit card. They had a cash price and a "credit card price" which is not really fair in this day and age.

I admit I am biased in favor of this place because my wife and I had our first date here. The main reason I like The Scoop is because you get what you pay for. I do not mean that in the figurative sense either. Yes, the ice cream is really good. Yes, it is homemade. No, there are not 31 flavors to choose from. What makes the ice cream worth it is the air, or lack there of. Yes, I did say the air. See, ice cream has to be aerated otherwise it would be a flavored milk popsicle. That's why ice cream is churned. The air is what makes it soft. Some ice cream stores, including many homemade ones I've been to, churn a lot of air into their ice cream. That makes it really 'fluffy', but it also gives you less ice cream. The Scoop seems to put very little air into theirs. For instance, when I was eating my rocky road last week, it seemed like I was eating a piece of cold chocolate fudge. What could be better. My only suggestion is that they could mix their milk shakes better. Half of my son's chocolate shake tasted like milk, the other was super chocolatey.

Ice cream was amazing...my wife is from California and she absolutely loved it as well! Butter Pecan was amazing.

  • Eric M.

Not happy about the price! Was charged 8$ for a hot fudge ice cream. I'm not sure when ice cream became so expensive? May these are Old Town prices?!!

    Its ok.

Orange Chocolate Chocolate Chip and the Black Raspberry Cheesecake are both absolutely divine. Skip the Ben & Jerry's and head over to the Creamery!

After walking over from a disappointment from Pop's Ice Cream across the street.. my girlfriend and I ventured over here. The lighting was nice. The temperature was quite cold in the place though.. but I'm sure on busy nights.. it gets hot with all the body heat. For 11am in the morning.. there seemed to be a nice flow of traffic. The owner seemed to be working.. he was talking to a lady about how their ice cream was made and was telling her to try different samples. Seems like he knew what he was talking about. The ice cream was delicious.. the prices could use some work though. That's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Great location though.

The ice cream here is REALLY good. I LOVE the coffee oreo. Service is great and the portions are generous. Too bad it has no ambiance...

Cash only. The do have an ATM once you enter their door, on the left corner, if you need some greens. We made it in just before the crazy long line started forming a few minutes after we got our sweets. As we were sitting down, at a booth, his blue eyes looked shocked - I turned around and woowie, where'd these peeps come come??? The line went out the door the entire 20 minutes we were in here. That explained the insane air conditioner. At first, it was freezing but when more bodies were filling up this cozy place, I understood why the cool Arctic air was circulating. Even with my deliciously generous Pistachio Nut homemade ice cream in a small waffle cone, the A/C was a good call on their behalf. I even got a double waffle cone stuck together - yippie, for me! Lucky, lucky me. He got the small vanilla custard in a small waffle cone which was also a good heaping serving. Pics of our cooling cones and random shots are found in their business profile yelp.com/biz/the-scoop-g… His custard tasted similar to Twist Again Pretzel's custard in White Flint Mall. My vivid green Pistachio Nut homemade ice cream had an ample amount of nuts and the texture of the ice cream was creamy rich. Custard and ice cream sizes/cost: Small $3.50 Medium $4.75 Large $5.50 cone or cup Also offered are milkshake, malt, ice cream float, ice cream soda, smoothies and much more (that means there's other but I was too busy w/my ice cream cone). There are a few booths (I wanna say 5-7? Not much) but since there's not much room inside, most enjoy their snack/dessert outside. The good peeps of this establishment kept the line moving efficiently. Definitely worth repeating or three-peating..... ya get what I'm saying.

  • Chase A.

Hot chocolate was pretty good. We also got blueberry cobbler (heated) with vanilla ice cream. Ice cream was average, the cobbler wasn't very warm and tasted like a pop tart. Unimpressed.

    (2)
  • Melissa C.

Poor service, not great selection of flavors. I got the bittersweet chocolate and that was pretty good.

    (2)
  • HanaDC T.

I love this place. I always get Orange chocolate chocolate chip. That was nice combination of Orange and chocolate. The taste is like drinking cocktail. This place only takes cash. So you need to get some cash before you go!

amazing frozen custard! If i was a local, I'd be a regular!

  • Meredith H.

In the unspoken war between Pops and The Scoop*, I am a complete Scoop junkie. All of their ice cream is fabulous (check out the raspberry cheesecake or the pumpkin custard in the fall) and the staff is super friendly and nice. Thankfully now, they take credit cards, so it's a whole lot easier to get your ice cream fix. The interior isn't much to look at, but it's wonderfully air-conditioned (which is a must in Alexandria in the summer). Great prices for great ice cream - join the fight! Set The Scoop in Sight! *other people know this as the Creamery - the names are interchangeable.

Just came here for some sort of frozen dessert. Am regretful my friend and I went here. Two points why: -The custard coming out of the machine seemed an awful lot like overly-creamy soft serve...a bit waxy to the taste. -Lady who served us was curt and not very nice. She asked together or separate. We said separate. She punched in $2.00 and then doubled it and then added .21 for a total of $4.21. My friend pulled out her credit card and paid. I thought she had already paid for mine and asked if that was the case. No, I would have to pay. Ok, a bit expensive and the prices were not clearly posted. She punched in 4.21 again and I originally was going to pay with cash but changed my mind because I didn't want to deal with coins. As I asked for clarification, she swiped and told me I was maying $0.25 for the credit card transaction... So she wanted my extra quarter? And was going to charge that amount regardless of my using cash? Go across the street and wait the line for Pops. Everyone else that came out seemed a lot more happy and fulfilled with their ice cream!!!

I had Papaya and it was delicious. My favorite place for ice cream in Old Town!

  • Jasen F.

Having visited the realm of the Dairy Godmother in Del Ray nearly every week, I stopped in here last weekend for the first time in a year. It has not gotten any better. The smallest size cost $4+ and was not anything special. I'm sure they're really nice people but if I wanted to spend that much on ice cream, I'll go around the corner and spend my money at Ben & Jerry's were the money helps support organic farming, etc. The spot is dirty, old-fashioned (in a bad way), and underwhelming. Head out to Del Ray or Ben & Jerry's.

  • Amber L.

Very good! Just not quite as good as Pop's across the street. I'd recommend The Creamery's rum-raisin.

    (4)
  • Caitlin D.

Yummy ice cream but awfully rich. My boyfriend and I split a small and that was plenty for us. :)

    (4)
  • Eunice S.

Too expensive for ice cream but the portions are pretty big. I had the chocolate chip ice cream dough, and it was OK.

    (3)
  • Ticha B.

A+ on the COLD A/C when we walked in from the heat. The ice cream was homemade as stated. But a bit on the expensive side. Nice crowd though! I had the cherry vanilla. It was just OK. The waffle cone wasn't fresh and smellin' good as expected. Cash only....I would probably try the other ice cream parlor down the street.

I have been at the Creamery for the past two Saturdays. I came back to get the Papaya scoop.

    (4)
  • Mansi A.

Orange chocolate chip ice cream. THAT is the reason to go here. Don't miss it! I was visiting a friend in Alexandria for one week (in the dead of winter!) and I managed to end up here twice. Both times I selected the same flavor. Just trust me on this one.

  • Amanda C.

The prices are steep, which made me consider a 3-star rating. But then I remembered that I hate it when Yelpers score down due to price. En mass, we're a cheap breed and it throws the ratings off at restaurants that are actually very good. So you've been warned, but give it a try if you're in the area. My boyfriend got the vanilla frozen custard. I tried the peppermint ice cream and ordered the cherry vanilla. It was a small portion, but it was deliciously homemade tasting. For being in a touristy area, it was seriously folksy and small town-ish. Simple and well-made. But 7.50 for a milkshake? My grandpa is rolling in his grave.

On the fence about 4 and 5 stars, I teetered to the 5th because of a few happy happenings: * The clerk behind the counter was very friendly and had no issue with letting us try as many flavors as we wanted. * Plenty of fantastic, unique flavors. Coffee Oreo? Peanut Butter Oreo? Need I say more? They have classics like peppermint (the pink kind with the chunks of mint) and butter pecan, but they also have the off-the-beaten-path kinds too. * They offer no-sugar-added flavors as well! I sampled the NSA mint and it was fantastic. In the end I settled on frozen custard. They put theirs in a soft serve machine so you can get a twist cone. It was creamy and delicious. Didn't melt too quickly either which was nice, since we took a stroll by the water. My boyfriend had a Coffee Oreo malt and said it had a nice thickness and was "very tasty." He's a stickler when it comes to his milkshakes and malts! Cash only and their ice cream is definitely a bit pricey compared to some ($9 or $10 for a malt and a soft-serve custard cone), but hey, you're in Old Town! Enjoy the location and the quality.

  • R T.

Cold aircon. Great when you walk in from the summer heat. Got rum raisin which was fantastically yummy! The waffle cone is fresh too. Will def come back again. Cash only which is annoying. But kudos on having a ATM machine on site.

    (4)
  • Lindasauce B.

The rum raisin was AMAZING! :-) Very creamy, not too many raisins but the rum flavor radiates throughout the ice cream. I'm a fan!

  • Francesca L.

I agree with Shoshana G on this one. Orange chocolate chip. FTW. Really, you don't have to wait for Christmas for the taste of those orange chocolate balls anymore. This place fits the bill.

  • vanessa g.

This is a great place to visit if you want to try flavors that are out of the norm. Their pumpkin ice cream was creamy & just right. They also have some frozen custard which isn't easy to find around here. The staff is friendly & welcoming & their shakes are tasty too.

I was praying this place would be open for a redeeming after meal treat post a decidedly sub-par dinner next door...and once again, this place saved the day!!!!! We first visited this location back in the summer while my husband was in town for business. Then, it was super busy and a welcome cold refuge from the heat and humidity. With the line winding around the shop and out the door, it was kind of stressful to pick ONE flavor out of what seemed like endless possibilities, but I ordered an orange chocolate chocolate chip in a cake cone and it was instant delight! Hubs ordered a cheesecake flavor, I think it was blueberry or strawberry...nevertheless it was SOOOO good. It's CASH ONLY, but we noticed that before coming in and there is an ATM for those that might be without. This second trip proved to be EVEN better. We just returned from there, not even an hour ago. As the rest of King Street proved to be, this location was very empty, with only one employee on duty. He was nice and friendly though, and I didn't even have to hesitate to order because I had seen the magical "Pumpkin Ice Cream" sign outside. No brainer! Had a small scoop (largest small I've ever seen, by the way!!) in a cake cone, of course, and hubs ordered the coffee oreo. Double yums =) So, if you're ever near the waterfront area of King Street, look for the cute huge bear in the window and try a scoop! You won't regret it!!

  • Brad S.

This place really doesn't live up to the hype of the front facade and lines you encounter. The ice cream is OK, sort of tastes like what you'd expect from someone setting up an ice cream shop at a Giant or Safeway spooning out Eddy's or Bryer's brand ice cream. The flavors aren't even inspired, and very typical of over-the-counter brand variations. There is a mint oreo chip, which appears to be their most popular, so I tried it. Tastes like cookies-and-cream - the only mint I could taste was from the food coloring ... it is green, that is about it. The staff is more concerned about moving the line along than actually trying to help ... plus the ice cream is about half-way down the line, so if you like to look at the ice cream before you order yours, try again, not here, I was rushed to make a decision, and before I could say the size I was handed a small single scoop cone ... which was $5.00 ... save your money and just go to Ben and Jerry's -- this place caters towards yuppies who see a thrown-together mom and pop store and think it has to be better.

    (1)
  • Jill H.

Get the peanut butter ice cream! I never thought I would like that, but it's amazing. If you like rum raisin, Scoops has it! :) There's always a long line during peak season, but they get you in & out quickly. They only accept cash.

    (4)
  • Mariko W.

Decent. I mean, I can't NOT like ice cream. This place does have A/C, is cash only, does have an ATM on site, is homemade and does have waffle cones. However, I really wanted some form of peanut butter ice cream (chocolate, vanilla, whatever) and they didn't have any. I instead got peach and chocolate chip (don't judge on the combo), which was pretty tasty. They have chocolate and vanilla custard, but other than that, no other variation on custard flavors. I don't think it's that overpriced (I do live in NY) - was $4.25 for a regular (2 flavors) cone. I would rather go here than a chain place.

I just moved to the area, and ice cream is an essential part of my well-being, so finding an ice cream shop has been on my list of things to do. This being said, ice cream has also been heavily scrutinized. The Creamery, formerly The Scoop, or so says the employee shirts, is across the street from Pop's Old Fashioned Ice Cream. I'll review my experience at Pop's later, but long story short, when standing on King Street and debating between two ice cream shops across the street from each other, it's hard to choose. Originally, my companions and I went into Pop's based soley on the decision that there was a dog out front. We went in and turned around and went to The Creamery and I do not regret this for a minute. By the time we crossed to The Creamery, there was a dog out front, too. The Creamery had homemade ice cream. Fabulous. The flavors are unique as well. I had Orange Chocolate Chocolate Chip, which talked just like a chocolate orange. I only ever have those treats at Christmas time, so an ice cream flavor brings double the joy year round! Another flavor that I love is Orange Pineapple. This is only the second place I've ever seen it (the first being the ice cream shop of my childhood). My sister had Cookie Dough and Coconut, both of which she liked. She said she would have liked more chunks of actual dough, but she was still feeling not very unique with her Cookie Dough to dwell. Prices seem expensive, but this is Alexandria. Everything is expensive. It's cash only, and as mentioned before, there is an ATM on site. The employees were much more friendly here than at Pop's across the street. They were joking the minute we came in, shouting and remarking at the amount of people (we followed in a big group), and had silly antics. As we left, the owner thanked us. I think this is going to be my go-to ice cream shop. I'm so excited.

  • Marina L.

It was our first time in Alexandria and our last stop on the DC trip before going home. This place has lots of flavors to choose from: I decided to try pumpkin, and my husband had Rocky Road (his fave). I've never had a pumpkin icecream before but I must tell that this one was amazing! Rich in flavor but neither watery no too fat. Just perfect! And the taste of Thanksgiving:) Def a treat when walking around old town Alexandria.

  • Kat L.

If you advertise a coke float it better damn well be coke. But the people here are cheap and use RC cola. What a waste of money. It was gross, and I threw it away. I hate to be lied to.

  • Alexander C.

Being from the west coast, I have not had the pleasure of enjoying a certain dessert that I was able to enjoy at this establishment. With that said, after dinner I returned to this ice cream parlor because I saw a sign advertising "frozen custard" and boy am I glad I came back. I got a medium-sized order of this frozen custard and it was incredibly awesome! Mmmm..creamy and delicious. My friend also had a cup of Cookies n' Cream ice cream which was equally delicious. In addition to the dessert, we had a very interesting and enlightening conversation with the owner about yogurt culture and other topics. His welcoming and friendly attitude added to our successful experience at this dessert spot!

Cinnamon and Orange Chocolate Chip were REALLY yummy!

  • Abby M.

So maybe I am being a little harsh tonight. I felt that the ice cream was slightly pricy I think it was like 3.50 for a small, and 4.75 for a regular. Although, that's average these days. I did not find the ice cream to be that good. I had a butter-crinkle or something like that..I honestly don't remember the name just that it had butter in it. It tasted like butter pecan but with caramel instead. It was quite good. The guy that served me...was a-freakingdorable. and yes...that will earn them an extra star. When you go out as a fifth wheel...eye candy is GREATLY appreciated. This place kinda lacks character but I give it credit for being local especially in the chain mecca that is northern virginia.

    (3)
  • Stanley S.

Yuck, never going back here again. I had their ice cream before and was either overwhelmed by flavor or only pleasantly surprised at mediocrity. But now, I can honestly say the only good thing is that it isn't very crowded. My last visit literally left a horrible slimy taste in my mouth (which i suspect has to do with some kind of extender they put in their ice cream) and an upset stomach. A few other cons for me include a finicky ATM inside, tiny interior and their flavors are very boring.

    (1)
  • Doug T.

So I've been there a few times, mostly cause they are open the latest of the three shops on that corner (Pop's across King St and Ben & Jerrys around corner on Union). I would say the other two are better, but the ice cream here is decent. The custard isn't home made, but from a mix. The ice cream doesn't seem to have any especially novel flavors that you might find in other shops that do homemade. The staff is generally cool and helpful (more so than Pop's, but Pop's has way way more business so the employees there might be a bit more stressed out). Anyway, not bad but really not great either.

    (3)
  • Kristi T.

Good flavors and line moves fast! Friendly counter service and lots of choices (frozen custard, frozen yogurt or ice cream) Definitely a family pleaser.

    (4)
  • Lindsey T.

Great selection, nice old time feel, excellent location for grabbing a scoop and enjoying the boardwalk, good prices for homemade, and friendly service. Oh, and the lemon custard is to. die. for.

    (5)
  • L B.

Orange and raspberry sorbet were gross and refrozen and tasted bad. Thumbs down.

    (1)
  • Davidson H.

The rocky road ice cream was average but the customer service is worth the stars. Best customer service in the DC area for sure. I suggest this for anyone on a date or taking out the wife. A nice dinner in Alexandria, finishing it off with ice cream at this splendid location. My wife enjoyed the Pumpkin ice cream and now she is addicted.

  • Randy M.

After dinner on Saturday we stopped in for a scoop before walking around old town. The place seemed to be manned by just one employee that was frantically helping everyone. Even just the 6 of us seemed to put her into a mild rush, I'd hate to see what a long line would do to this place. So I settled on mint chocolate chip ice cream. The only flavor of custard they had this day was vanilla. The ice cream was very creamy and you could tell it was made in house. The problem I had with it was there wasnt enough mint. It was light bordering on faint and if not for the color one might think they got the wrong order.

  • Yi-Fang S.

I had an opportunity to visit friends in Old Town Alexandria this past weekend. My friends took me to The Scoop Grill when I mentioned that I had a craving for ice cream. It was a very hot and humid day so ice cream was perfect! I decided to try their vanilla frozen yogurt on a cake cone. It was delicious! My friend got the chocolate milkshake and he loved it. This place is worth the visit!

    (4)
  • Shoshana g.

Orange Chocolate Chip ice cream. That's basically all that needs to be said.

    (5)
  • Sean G.

Ben and his buddy Jerry live around the corner, but this Mom and Pop shop is worth your ice cream dollars. Why? Everything's homemade on the premises, I know, I used to work here. They also, curiously, sell Jack Daniels ice cream (in Vanilla and Chocolate). But dont go there looking for a cheap buzz, you'd need to eat about a gallon to get any effect and I expect the booze would be mitigated by all that cream. PS To would be robbers: Mr Lindsey, the owner, is a SERIOUS southern gun enthusiast, which is to say its probable that he's packin... Dont say I didnt warn you...

    (4)
  • sarah s.

Eh. I appreciate the fact that this place is local, but honestly, Ben and Jerry's around the corner is so much better. I had the mint chocolate chip which wasn't as good as Breyer's you can buy in the store. I actually question whether the ice cream is really made there, but one of the Yelp reviews written by someone who used to work there says it is. My friend had the choc-vanilla frozen custard, which he said was just ok. Our major complaint was that the servings are pretty stingy. I had a tiny little scoop (about half the size of the one pictured below) and my friend's custard was small, too. Plus, they're cash only--I HATE THAT! Since they're not paying credit card fees you'd think they could be a bit more generous with the servings. I'll head to Ben and Jerry's next time and satisfy both my taste buds and my wallet.

    (2)
  • Evan M.

I have no idea why this place doesn't have better reviews. They have the best ice-cream. Try the pumpkin if it's in-season. Yum!!!!

  • Jeff Q.

Had the Lemon Custard. It was awesome. One of several good ice cream options in the neighborhood.

    (4)
  • Mark E.

I haven't been to this place since Pops opened. The last time I went, my ice cream was very grainy like it was made from a mix. It didn't have a lot of flavor either. Just doesn't compare to any home made ice cream I've ever had. And if it is home made (like they say) then I guess I just don't like their recipe.

    (2)

Orange chocolate chocolate chip was delicious. Their semi-sweet chocolate ice cream was good too. Oh, and they take credit cards now.

3.5 stars. My fiance and I went here a couple of months ago on a late summer evening. We each ordered one scoop in a cone. The ice cream was delicious, the prices were not. It was around $7-8 for two pretty small plain cones. It was also freezing cold inside, with air vents blasting down from the ceiling, which is not pleasant for people trying to eat ice cream! I'd go back again, but it's too expensive to be a regular stop for me.

The Ice cream maker is super friendly! In fact the employees here are super friendly that I'll go out of my way just to stop by here. They make my day better. They have awesome seasonal flavors. Currently my favorite is pumpkin. Their ice cream is made fresh there. It doesn't get very liquidy or melt fast.

Sorbet. End of story. I know tons of folks will compare The Creamery with Pops, which gives a heftier portion, with more flavors and at a lower price. However for poor lactose intolerant people like myself, sorbet is the next best thing, which Pops don't carry while The Creamery did (3 flavors). But the fun doesn't stop there - both the lemon and orange sorbet were delicious and well worth the price. My dad got the mango ice cream and they topped it to a point where it's *almost* the same portion size as Pops, so the line has been blurred. Anyways if you love ice cream, Pops will probably be your pick, but for a place that do premium homemade sorbet, I'll stick with The Creamery every time.

I have been coming here as long as I have been a resident of Alexandria, so for the past 5 years. I have never had a bad experience at the creamery and guests always request it whenever they are in town. The Shop is very small and a little run down, but everything is very clean and the employees have always been very nice. You can taste whatever flavor you would like before ordering and they always have some great recommendations. I have never had anything besides the ice cream but their cobblers always look good. They have the usual set of ice cream flavors and seem to have some seasonal ones that they rotate through. Prices may be a little higher here but I am ok with paying a little more to help support a local business that I like. The favorite flavors among my group are the peanut butter fudge, bittersweet chocolate, and the black raspberry cheesecake.

  • Kathy N.

The ice cream is a little overpriced for its worth with a small scoop of ice cream costing $4.50 with the cash discount. The decor is outdated and the shop is pretty small - it reminds me of an ice cream place you'd find at a beach Boardwalk. I've never had Coffee Oreo before, so that was a bit of a delicious game changer.

  • Lisa Y.

The ice cream at the Creamery is definitely the reason why there's a line out the door. But the price was ridiculously expensive. $4.25 for a scoop or a bowl of frozen custards? That's absurd even for NYC prices. But I got to hand it to them, the peanut butter fudge ice cream was perfectly balanced and blew me out of the water. The custard was creamy and reminded me of Ritters back at home.

The weather was warm and perfect for ice cream. When I walked in I was blasted with ice cold AC. It was too much but it will be perfect in the summer. The line was long but moved along quickly. I ordered butter pecan on waffle cone. The ice cream was delicious and creamy.

Delicious, creative flavors made in-house. The lemon custard, banana pudding and coffee Oreo were our favorites. And the guy was so nice and patient that he let us try almost every flavor! Will definitely have to return.

I don't think there is a better ice cream place out there!! I love this place and my boyfriend and I will even go there on the coldest day to get a cone! Orange chocolate chocolate chip is phenomenal and my fav. My boyfriend loves the cinnamon flavor. I really wish I lived closer!

  • Marivic L.

I decided to try this place out since I (and the rest of Old Town, apparently) would normally go to Pop's for their ice cream. I tried to butterscotch because you can't get butterscotch everywhere. It tasted like those Brach's yellow butterscotch candies - but the flavor was not as pronounced as I'd like it to be. The texture was good and the scoop was generous for the almost $5 it cost me. The color was a bit offputting. I dunno, it was a really odd tan. Anyway, it was a decent scoop and they had a decent amount of flavors. The sugar cone also looked homemade, so that's kewl.

Meh. No wait during at 430 on Monday. Taste? Nothing to write home about. Where are you people getting ice cream then giving this place 5 stars?? No fancy sundae choices. Just make your own. Don't complain about playing more for credit. Use cash and pay cash price America.

Food - 3 of 5 stars Service - 3 of 5 stars Atmosphere -n/a I stopped by the Creamery on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I cone of custard was the only thing missing from an already great day. This was my first visit, but I given the line, I assumed I made the right decision. Pricing - Small ice cream starts at $4.25. Add another $0.25 if you pay with credit card. Add another $0.80 if you want a waffle cone Offerings - Various hand-scoop flavors and Vanilla and/or Chocolate frozen custard that can be served in a cup, cake cone, sugar or waffle cone I did enjoy the ice cream but pay $4.5 for a small cone is over the top; should a family of four really pay nearly $20 for ice cream--NO. You can get a pint of your favorite store brand ice cream for that price (on sale). The credit surcharge really pisses me off. Thankfully there are other options that may not nickel and dime you at every corner like the Creamery.

I guess I need to modify my profile to clarify that in addition to being a spice fiend, I'm also an ice cream snob. The Creamery seems to be busy just by default due to its location on the Old Town waterfront, and also gleaning overflow customer traffic from people who don't want to wait in line across the street for Pop's ice cream. The Creamery's neon sign boasts "homemade ice cream," but not much about it seemed homemade. I'm sure the neon green food coloring in the mint ice cream and pistachio flavors will brighten kids' eyes, but to me, nothing about neon coloring and artificial flavoring says "homemade." I went for a small scoop of the Bittersweet Chocolate in a sugar cone. While the chocolate flavor itself was fairly decent, it had a good bit of "Ovaltine" aftertaste, and the sugar cone was super stale. Guess a cup would have been a safer choice. The place is busy and they seem to have poor crowd control. It helps to know what you want ahead of time as opposed to perusing the tubs of neon ice cream. If you know your order, you move ahead in line. They also have fro yo and frozen custard. Cash payment nets you a 5% discount. I'll keep trying local ice cream shops, but Ben & Jerry's remains my favorite.

  • Qui H.

I got a small cup of frozen custard that was $5. It was really small and don't think it is worth it. I was only craving ice cream because it was a hot day and this was the first place I saw when I was walking by.

The custard was soooo creamy...YUM YUM YUM!!!!

  • Lisa B.

Nice fresh ice cream in small batches! And frozen custard! My favorite flavour is the English Rum Toffee, but the Blackberry and Lemon Custard come close! Plenty of chocolate chips in the Orange Chocolate Chocolate Chip ice cream. Fantastic place to get a cone for a little afternoon boost or after dinner!

  • Nicole W.

I will probably not go here again. The restaurant was a little dirty and made me lose my appetite.

    (2)
  • Matt B.

Beware the "smoothies." They are just bottled juice blended with ice. The menu does not list the price, which was a startling $7.50. I was disappointed that there was no actual fruit anywhere near this "smoothie" and the manager said they don't guve refunds. Not sure why this is, because I paid cash. He gave me an ice cream, which was good, though.

  • Matt W.

I'm not thrilled about the fact that the folks at The Scoop seem to be working to get every penny out of you ($.50 fee for using a credit card, $.80 cents for a waffle cone, $.60 for a napkin....ok, I'm kidding about that last one), but they make some really solid ice cream. For someone from Columbus, where artisan ice cream is very much a big thing, I'd say they aren't as good as somewhere like Jeni's ice cream, but they're very comparable to Mardi Gras, Johnson's, or Graeters, and their pumpkin ice cream was incredibly flavorful - I seriously felt like I was tasting a real pumpkin pie, and the bittersweet chocolate was a nice compliment. Take cash, and take a good walk around Old Town afterwards with your ice cream to enjoy the picturesque setting.

Adorable little shop right in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, VA. The ice cream was not my favorite, it wasn't as creamy as I prefer and the traditional flavors had a strange taste. The young guys working were very kind and efficient.

  • Alice W.

My advice? Go to Pop's if you're craving traditional ice cream or head up the street to Casa Rosada if you like gelato. The Creamery is probably the last ice cream joint I'd visit in Old Town Alexandria. Craving ice cream, I opted to try out the Creamery instead of my usual Casa Rosada fix and the line for Pop's was out the door per usual. This place makes the usual ice cream flavors like chocolate, butter pecan, pistachio, vanilla, rocky road, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary. They also have sundaes. Very overpriced. It's $4.25 for a small cup/single scoop and that's just the cash discount. If you're using credit card, they charge you more. I paid $9.47 for two smalls. And the ice cream wasn't even that great. I ordered rocky road and it was frozen to the point of being rock solid. No creamy goodness because it was completely stuck together and almost gritty to the taste like it hadn't been mixed well. Interior is a little run down and it's freezing inside! They unnecessarily crank up the A/C to a point where I think I'm in the Arctic, despite the outside temperature only lingering in the 70s. I would much rather spend my money on Casa Rosada's gelato. Consistently delicious and much cheaper. Even Pop's can have my money before The Creamery.

Try out this local ice cream shop! Lots of delicious homemade flavored! I tried the lemon custard and the orange chocolate chocolate chip, both delicious! Good service, nice clean interior seating area too!

This is such a nice stop after dinner in Old Town! Get a cup (or cone) and take it down to the waterfront to walk around and enjoy! My boyfriend and I came here last night for dessert after eating at La Tasca. The line was very short around 9:00pm and we were quickly waited on. From start to finish we were there maybe 5 minutes. I ordered Carmel turtle fudge and he ordered chocolate chip cookie dough. Lots of cookie dough in his and mine was packed with swirls of fudge and caramel. Very reasonably priced and tasty- we will be back!

After 3 trial spoons, the lady loudly asks me and the kids if we are planning to buy any ice cream.. Sad.. Just walked out

  • Juliet A.

Jeez. Typical overpriced Old Town fare ($4.25 for a single? and that is with the "cash discount). You CAN pay with a credit card here, but it is discouraged (hence the "cash discount" - I don't even want to know how much they jack up the price for credit card transactions). The place has a decent selection of flavors - nothing outstanding or really original. The inside feels quite dated. Really would be a 3 star experience except for the fact that my cone was completely stale. Bummer!

  • Jennie Jae S.

If you ever want ice cream like in the olden days where it was thick creamy and really seriously satisfies your taste buds you've come to the right place. The place was nice and airy. They didn't have too many flavors to overwhelm. The service was nice and simple. And they give you a lot for one cup. I had to say stop haha. I got pistachio and it was on point. It's a good place for the old fashioned days with some newfangled flavors:)

This is a cute little shop. I am told that it has been open for over 25 years, and the day I visited was their anniversary. I felt a little sorry for the sweet little shop competing with Pops ice cream shop across and Ben & Jerry's around the corner. They are the little shop that could. It helps that the ice cream is delicious. There is no picture because I ate my cup of ice cream so quickly. The fact that this shop is open late is bonus. Who doesn't want hand made ice cream in the middle of the night? I will definitely be back when I visit again.

  • Leonard S.

I've wrestled with this rating, and was tempted to give it 4 stars simply because it was worlds better than Pop's. It was so nice to have ice cream that didn't have ice crystals in it and/or melt immediately. The ice cream here is higher quality than Pop's, though still not premium, and the price is still Old Town inflated. That being said, the ice cream was certainly a satisfactory experience, worth a solid 3 stars. However, there was a nice bonus for my wife, who cannot handle much lactose. They have sorbet! I by no means consider this a requirement for an ice cream shop, and I consider this a nice-to-have. However, it was the quality of the sorbet that was worth the 4th star. It was delicious, one of the better sorbets I've ever tasted.

  • Bianca F.

I really like the ice cream from here. I highly recommend the coconut. They do have waffle cones, but no waffle cups. They also have a tasty blackberry cobbler! The line can get long on occasion, but it's worth the wait.

So I'm sitting in Old Town Alexandria's The Creamery, the only person on a Saturday afternoon at 1:30. Tons of retail display space. No music. No wifi. No baked snacks. No coffee. Starbucks is a few strides away and it is packed as it seems it always is, to the gills. People lounging and reading. Eight to ten patrons lined up for coffee. And something seems incredibly absurd. The owners of the Creamery are stupid. And they bring the rest of Old Town down with them. Really Pathetic.

  • Joey W.

How do you not have sprinkles?! It's like an Italian restaurant not having pizza .... Mmmmmm, pizza. It's not horrible ... It's not great. I just found the flavor kinda of blah. There are some other places to go in old town. Did they undergo a management change recently?

  • Manuela S.

I have grown up coming to this place for milkshakes. But had been disappeared to learned that it has been taken off the menu because of a single complaint rather than reworking how they are made. Yes, the prices are on the higher side but the ice cream is homemade. I just wish they bring back milkshake (and have them year around again too!) And also wish that they can maybe put money to give the shop a facelift, they sell a great product and the shop deserves it.

  • Lew S.

Had the coffee/Oreo. Not sure who's home it was made in, but it didn't taste much different than Rite-Aid (except for the price!). My wife wanted a couple of samples and was met with snotty disdain. Needless to say, nothing went close to the tip jar. We'll stick to Yogi Castle Frozen Yogurt up the street.

A cute little place to get a scoop of ice cream - they make their ice cream on the premise, so that was nice to hear! I enjoyed my Lemon Custard ice cream (it was creamy and had a hint of lemon, but it was a little too sweet), while my husband had his strawberry (nice chunks of strawberries throughout). They are also known for their pie a la modes, so I would like to come back and check them out (like their peach and/or cherry cobbler with vanilla ice cream). +strawberry ice cream

This place is fabulous! My brothers (twins, 6 feet tall, and serious eaters) and I walked in to a VERY friendly staff. They allowed us to sample any one of their many HOMEMADE flavored of ice cream, as many as we liked. We all ended up getting their orange chocolate chip flavor (truly delicious) and they dished out some generous scoops, enough to fill my brothers. The prices seem a little steep, but they really give you your money's worth. If you pay with cash, the prices are as marked. If you pay credit, they charge an additional 5%. I plan on going back and bringing friend with!

  • Mattie C.

Personally, I like the place across the street better. Pops has more flavor options including some banana flavor ones! This one didn't have any banana flavorings so that was disappointing. I got a cake cone with a scoop of mint chip and chocolate chip cookie dough. Both ice creams were a solid OK. It cost in the $6 range, which I found high, but not unreasonably so. Still, I am very happy that there are ice cream choices around here, as "froyo" seems to have replaced it everywhere else. A-OK!

Yummy! Cookie dough ice cream on a waffle cone!! Plenty of staff so line isn't crazy and they are friendly too!

First and last time here. I ordered their vanilla frozen custard in a large cup. The custard was thick, smooth, not overly vanilla-flavored, and not too sweet (like I prefer)...initially. After six bites, I discovered a grainy and icy custard underneath -- it was almost as if two different batches were served to me. How does this happen? I sat near the marina staring at the yellow-ish bits in the custard and pondered what they were -- orange zest? I could not figure it out, but as a good Asian, I ate it all anyway. $6.50 for a large cup, so the price was reasonable for Old Town, but with the inconsistent texture, I will not be back. Nielsen's Frozen Custard is waaaaay better.

    (2)
  • Elaine C.

To be honest, super expensive and not that great. It cost ~$7.50 for two scoops of ice cream here and IMO the taste and texture didn't warrant the price. Maybe find your ice cream elsewhere?

How I heard of this place: We walk by this ice cream shop each time we venture up and down King Street. This, and Pop's, across the street, which we sampled last month. While Cody, our ice cream lovin' friend was in town, we simply could not pass up the opportunity to try some more homemade ice cream in Old Town. Type of cuisince: According to an editorial review in The Washington Post, "On a weekend, it's hard to get through the door of the Scoop Grill, a slim front-to-back parlor, just across the street from Pop's. The ice cream's the focus here, but this small business also does a booming trade in short-order breakfasts and lunches. If there's a nip in the air and you don't have a fancy for ice, have a helping of homemade cobbler (blueberry, apple, cherry or peach) from the pie case on the counter. Ice cream flavors run the spectrum: cherry blossom, lemon custard, peanut butter, maple nut, and new batches are made fresh every day."Frozen Custard Ambiance: The windowed storefront with old fashioned ice cream shop font advertising the frozen custard and homemade ice cream, not to mention the long lines that form out the door of this small, yet "slim front-to-back parlor" are reason enough to make your way in. A slightly creepy, large, fluffy, white, automated teddy bear in the front welcomes patrons behind glass, a four-foot tall plastic soft serve ice cream cone makes mouths water, and then line of people along the glass display case on the tiled floors gives one time to make a final decision. White walls, fans overhead hanging from the tall ceilings, and Tiffany knock-off glass lamps hang over the wooden booth seats with tall backs, accompany marbled tables, over which hang framed photographs of ice cream, Ghirardelli Chocolate ads, as well as neon lights in the shape of ice cream cones. We make our way to the simple sign of flavors, place our orders, and continue down the line to pay for our selections. What I ordered: A medium cup (two scoops: $5.25) of my all-time favorite: Orange Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and a second scoop of Bittersweet Chocolate for good measure. My husband went for a large cup ($6.25) of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Cody selected my favorite in a waffle cone ($6.25) and a second scoop of Lemon Custard atop. What I loved: My favorite! The Orange Chocolate Chocolate Chip has yet to be beat. Why I loved it: Simple without frills. Just ice cream done right. Cost: Average to high ($4 - $6.25 per ice cream cone/cup, not including sundaes)

Hot chocolate was pretty good. We also got blueberry cobbler (heated) with vanilla ice cream. Ice cream was average, the cobbler wasn't very warm and tasted like a pop tart. Unimpressed.

A+ on the COLD A/C when we walked in from the heat. The ice cream was homemade as stated. But a bit on the expensive side. Nice crowd though! I had the cherry vanilla. It was just OK. Orange chocolate chip ice cream. THAT is the reason to go here. Don't miss it! I was visiting a friend in Alexandria for one week (in the dead of winter!) and I managed to end up here twice. Both times I selected the same flavor. Just trust me on this one.

Cold aircon. Great when you walk in from the summer heat. Got rum raisin which was fantastically yummy! The waffle cone is fresh too. Will def come back again. Cash only which is annoying. But kudos on having a ATM machine on site.

This is a great place to visit if you want to try flavors that are out of the norm. Their pumpkin ice cream was creamy & just right. They also have some frozen custard which isn't easy to find around here. The staff is friendly & welcoming & their shakes are tasty too.

The rum raisin was AMAZING! :-) Very creamy, not too many raisins but the rum flavor radiates throughout the ice cream. I'm a fan!

I agree with Shoshana G on this one. Orange chocolate chip. FTW. Really, you don't have to wait for Christmas for the taste of those orange chocolate balls anymore. This place fits the bill.

Get the peanut butter ice cream! I never thought I would like that, but it's amazing. If you like rum raisin, Scoops has it! :) There's always a long line during peak season, but they get you in & out quickly. They only accept cash.

If you advertise a coke float it better damn well be coke. But the people here are cheap and use RC cola. What a waste of money. It was gross, and I threw it away. I hate to be lied to.

Great selection, nice old time feel, excellent location for grabbing a scoop and enjoying the boardwalk, good prices for homemade, and friendly service. Oh, and the lemon custard is to. die. for.

  • sarah s.

    (3)
  • Curtis K.

    (5)
  • Sam L.

  • Shannon V.

Bummer!

A-OK!

I don't think there is a better ice cream place out there!! I love this place and my boyfriend and I will even go there on the coldest day to get a cone! Orange chocolate chocolate chip is phenomenal and my fav. My boyfriend loves the cinnamon flavor. I really wish I lived closer!

I got a small cup of frozen custard that was $5. It was really small and don't think it is worth it. I was only craving ice cream because it was a hot day and this was the first place I saw when I was walking by.

I will probably not go here again. The restaurant was a little dirty and made me lose my appetite.

Extra! ====== - Credit Cards Accepted - 5% Discount for cash payment

i really liked the flavor of the ice cream. ordered a regular with two scoops - toasted almond and caramel turtle fudge. both were creamy and delicious. definitely want to go back and try the pistachio. the decor could stand to be upgraded, and their "smoothies" are not really smoothies. but at least the ice cream is yummy. would definitely come back for after dinner splurges!
