This is my #1 go-to place... I always go to the bar for happy hour. These are THE best margaritas I've ever tasted. They are strong and they taste like real fruit. The food is always good, I always get corn tamal and the quesadillas. Great comfort food... and the staff is always friendly.

I really want to like San Antonio -- let me start with the positive. The chips and guacamole are good. Not amazing but good. Solid even. Outside of the chips and guacamole, the food is horrible. The menu looks good, but the execution is bad. The menu consists of Mexican/Tex Mex/El Salvadorian dishes, nothing I have tried is seasoned properly or cooked well. I recommend San Antonio for drinks/shots before a movie at the Hoffman Center, and maybe some chips and guac, but I wouldn't do dinner. It's crowded on the weekends, mostly because of it's location alone.

Boy oh boy have things REALLY gone downhill here. Your server will probably be nice, but lacking any skill. The kitchen staff is downright terrible, your food order will be either wrong, cold, or very late. With Ruby Tuesday across the way do yourself a favor and avoid spending even $1 here.

The good: Margaritas. Huge, cheap and delicious. Chips and salsa. It comes with your food/drinks, the chips were nicely toasted, and the salsa was decent. Prices. Happy hour is 3-8 Mon-Fri (lol wut), and offers reasonably priced drinks and half off tex-mex bar food. The bad: Service. When I have visited in the past and sat at the bar I thought service was fine, but we had a bad experience sitting at a table this time. For some reason, we got 2 refills of salsa and chips, but none of water. Our waitress went missing for long stretches of time. And my order got messed up. Beef quesadilla. I can live with someone getting the wrong meat in my food, as long as the substitute is equally delicious. But that was not the case here. I have ordered the chicken quesadilla here plenty of times. That was good. This was not. There was a lot of beef. Tough, overcooked beef. Ugh. Hot Dogs. Yes, hot dogs are not tex-mex food. And in theory, I think they could be good with beans on them. But when one end of the dog is so overcooked that it's inedible then there is a problem that no amount of dressings can fix.

A group of friends and I went to the AMC Hoffman and decided to grab a bite after the movie. The location is perfect, you walk out the front door of the theater make a right and there you are. We had reservations and called while we were rounding everyone up in the theatre to let them know that we were on our way. They weren't ready for ys when we came over we had to wait about 5 minutes for them to set up. They gave us two separate tables which is not what we requested. There was someone sitting in the area that accommodated us when they left which just a few minutes sfter we sat down we asked if we can move to that section. That seemed to have been a problem because they had already set up the two tables for us however they did let us move. Our waiter came and took our drink order as well as our meals. I ordered a peach frozen margarita and another lady ordered a strawberry frozen margarita however her drink was mostly foam and watered-down. She asked the waiter to make her a margarita on the rocks and he gave her this look like we're not taking your drink back but they did. When he came back it was much better. I ordered the column in shrimp absolutely amazing I have to ask for another marinara sauce and that came with no problem. Everyone else seemed to have liked what they ordered. The waiter hardly came to check on us to make sure whether we needed anything. So the food is great the service can be better and that's why I give it a 3.

San Antonio Bar & Grill could be an ideal candidate for a reality TV restaurant makeover. Residing in a cavernous, yet generic space next to the AMC Hoffman 22, San Antonio Bar & Grill describes itself as a Tex-Mex restaurant. However, it seemed to make only a half-hearted attempt at it based on its almost laughable interior design; its lengthy menu that appeared to hit both South and Central American, the Caribbean, as well as Cajun for inspiration; and to the sweet sounding, neon colored margaritas...Tex-Mex be damned! Still, on this particular Tuesday night when the fiancée and I were feeling too lazy to stay home and cook dinner, San Antonio Bar & Grill delivered a surprisingly decent meal. Our meal started off with the obligatory chips and sauce. While the chips weren't made fresh and served hot out of a fryer, they at least tasted like they didn't come straight out of a bag and they had decent crispness and flavor. The accompanying sauce was sadly unremarkable and did little to elevate the chips. For my main, I had a Puerto Rican dish, Asado Puertoriqueno ($13.95), grilled marinated steak seasoned with rosemary, garlic, and olive oil and served with rice and fried plantains. I can't speak to the authenticity of its flavors or if it was traditionally executed, but my steak was cooked to my requested medium rare and was juicy and flavorful in large part due to the rosemary, garlic and olive oil. The plantains were hot and nicely fried, thankfully, avoiding being just breaded, banana-like, mush. Carol W's two beef filled Chile Rellenos ($13.95) were a bit bland, with soggy breading, and much less successful. Also, given the prices of our two dishes were the same, our received value for her chile rellenos was much less than my dish. In the end, San Antonio Bar & Grill isn't a place you'd make a special effort to go dine. However, if you're looking for pre or post-movie eats and you've done Delia's, Yves' Bistro, Ted's Montana Grill, Cali Tort, and Galae Thai to death, then San Antonio Bar & Grill is a more interesting option than Ruby Tuesdays. Based on our two dishes, frankly, the Tex-Mex items may be the ones to avoid. Your better bets may be the dishes with Puerto Rican, Cuban, or Peruvian roots.

Rude!!! Came here on a busy night and was told there was a 45 minute wait. There were several groups waiting yet there were at least 10 open tables that we could see that no one was being seated at. I figured they were waiting on reservations but at least 20 minutes went by with no one getting seated. Then a group of 5 came in and the host wasn't at the station. We all heard their convo to each other saying "lets just sit here we have no reservation". To our surprise we heard them ask a server if they could sit there, server went to host and they said sure. Several people waiting got very upset. It was absolutely rude. I have eaten here before and the food is only ok. It is just conveniently located by the movie theater. Never again!

I go very often with my family. The tortilla soup is delicious. Bbq fajitas are immense and you are filled quickly, also the asado puertorriqueño. The service is good when it is not crowded. They have the best of the mexican beers.

I have gone in here numerous times either before or after a movie. I LOVE the frozen margaritas which are very strong. The large size is only a couple dollars more and definitely worth it if you are going to have more than one drink. I generally get the steak quesadillas which are very good. Also, we have almost always had this one awesome server. I'm from Houston, and generally make it a rule not to have Tex-Mex north of Dallas. But I make an exception for this place. I don't get too adventurous with ordering, and honestly, almost everything starts tasting fabulous after a drink and a half of their margaritas. The food's cheap. The drinks are big. Don't go expecting the meal of your lifetime, and you won't be disappointed.

This past Tuesday evening February 18th, I was staying in Alexandria and wanted to catch a movie. Next to the Theatre I saw the San Antonio Bar and Grill. It was what I was looking for,, some fresh trendy Mexican/Tex mex. I only had about 45 or so minutes and the server did not disappoint. She was quick and efficient. Smiles and responded to the order that always seems to get messed up,, Water with Lemon and no Ice please. You'd be amazed how often you get ice regardless of this request. On this occasion, perfect. At any rate, service was as good as I could have hoped for. The chips came quick with standard fare salsa, they were barely warm and salty,, overall good. The Carne Asade entree was another story,, a whole flank of marinated beef roughly 8 or so oz good portion size.,, which once cut/sliced up quite tasty,, but I was given a knife not meant for the task,, to say the least on an uneven plate not ideal for slicing, this was a messy and ridiculous project of myself, the customer trying to cut my slices of steak to put into a tortilla and then consume.. I'd be surprised if Im the only one to notice this shortcoming in this presentation. The toppings were correct, and plentiful, the beef was as requested,, medium,, but really?? I can't imagine the Chef not having a sharp knife and taking the literally 15- 20 seconds to properly thin slice this beef once it had rested, and then display for the paying customer. Are they too busy that this cannot be accomplished? Or do they enjoy watching the guest flounder with a dull steak knife at the table,, anyways, in my humble opinion this is a poor choice of presentation. Or put short, don't order this dish if you are well dressed and or are in a hurry. On my end this was a prep project before I got to enjoy barely two of the 4 tortillas and gave up after that. This restaurant is very open air high ceilings and a moderately paced atmosphere, good service, and likely some better dishes. I think there is room for return and maybe try again another day. Maybe a different dish.

Update 10/23/14-- This place has new management or something, because the service has dramatically improved! Now it's a good go-to when I'm craving some good tex-mex! This place has a lot of things going for it-- great happy hour specials on beer and food, as well as really, really tasty food (the fajitas are good, their Peruvian dishes are quite tasty, and they even have a decent Sangria). However, it gets 2 stars because they have the most consistently TERRIBLE service I have ever received at a restaurant. Every time I have eaten here, the server has been rude and/or completely inattentive, so you need to go walking around the restaurant looking for them if you need something or if you want to get your check. I live right next door to this restaurant and love tex-mex food, but the terrible service is bad enough that we pretty much never go there. But, if you are looking for good happy hour specials in this area, it's hard to beat San Antonio. If you're going to do any eating or drinking there, probably best to do it in the bar area, since at least then you can flag down the bartender pretty easily.

What is good service? What is good food? It isn't found at this place. I think their strategy is to give you strong cheap drinks to cover for the poor service And terrible food. Our waiter was slow, inattentive and preoccupied with his cell phone. The food was very much of a warehouse quality. The steak was tough. The salsa is way too salty. The wAiter was most attentive to me when he presented the check. Go down the street to Teds Montana Grill. This place lacks....

The low rating isn't for the food really, but the space. I actually really liked the food. I thought the service was good, maybe slightly above average. The location is nice being right next to the movie theater and around the corner from my apartment. The space itself was huge with tables everywhere and high ceilings. That was part of the problem though, the space was too big. The tables and booths were kind of cheap. The ceiling was made of those foam looking panels you see in high schools and government buildings. The worst part was that those panels were like mildewed and water damaged and just disgusting honestly. I thought the bar was nice and I was able to catch the end of a basketball game on my way out, but I couldn't get over the cafeteria style layout. My GF said she was never going back, so I guess that's that for me too!

Not a huge fan of the food, but that's more a reflection of how I feel about tex-mex. I've been here a half dozen times, mostly waiting for a movie to start up or happy hour. Happy hour drinks are cheap and generous, the place can accommodate a large crowd easily. I've had great service, both in large groups and when hanging out on my own having a few drinks. As a bar, I'd give this place 5 starts, but because I don't care for tex-mex, I had to bump it down...

A cool place to grab some Happy Hour Corona for $3 before heading out for the evening or home...THAT'S IT! Don't get the wrong cocky lil bartender who prides himself as an ex vet tho...stick with the other bartenders who at least look when you wave. The appetizer specials are good for the money too...THAT'S IT! LOL

This place was supposed to be a quick-ish dinner before seeing a movie on a Friday night. I should have known to turn to back when the place only had a few occupied tables. Don't be fooled by the authentic looking menu with Spanish names. We had to wait about 5 minutes before we were noticed and directed to a seat. Maybe understaffed? Then we were told that they were out of beef and as such the only meat available for entrees was chicken or shrimp.... Whatever happened to carnitas?? As it had been several months since I left California I had developed a yearning for some good Mexican food, and as such needed some sweet horchata to wash it all down. But surprise! No horchata!!! Apparently they don't even serve it. I ordered my go-to Mexican meal: a combo plate with rice, beans, chicken enchilada, chicken tamale and a chile relleno. The food was bland, and the interior of my chile relleno had BEEF (after we had been told they were out) and no cheese! This was not a chile relleno, but rather a Mexican adaptation of a stuffed bell pepper. My experience here only confirmed my fears of utter lack of decent Mexican cuisine on the East Coast. I have since been entirely deterred from seeking out and trying other Mexican restaurants.

My first visit was too many years ago, but it wasn't memorable. My second visit was this past Saturday between noon and 3pm for a quick bite before a movie. We waited about 5 minutes before we were even acknowledged and seated. Chips and salsa arrived quickly as did my soda. My husband's beer never appeared and we didn't bother asking about it. There were only a handful of occupied tables, not busy at all. We placed our order and waited...and waited...and waited. After having sat there for about 25 to 30 minutes, the waiter comes over to tell us that there is no more steak (my husband's order). Really? I realize this isn't the server's fault - clearly, the kitchen staff didn't look at their upcoming orders to see. So an order of beef tacos was placed and about 10 minutes later our food came out. There's nothing special about the food and service leaves much to be desired. The server announced that he had not charged us for my soda. Thanks. It was a cheap lesson learned.

Our meetup group (total of 8 people) ate here after a movie at the Hoffman. We were seated right away (we sat outside because it was a pretty nice day). Our server was great...he immediately took our drink order (most of us ordered margaritas) and brought a round of waters. Our food didn't take long to come out and everyone pretty much enjoyed what they ordered. I wouldn't say its the best tex-mex but it was decent and I would return again. The margaritas were good too and had a decent amount of alcohol in them (but not too much). When we asked for the check he actually asked us if we wanted it split up individually....wow, that never happens and we were very impressed by that.

I stopped by this place for the second time this weekend and feel like it's certainly worth reviewing. They have great drinks specials and good food. The portions are large and shareable for those counting calories. They have decent-sized margaritas both the small and the large ones are worth the cost. On my last visit I stuck with drinks and found that it was pretty quiet for a Friday night (which was fine with me). During my 1st visit, my friend ordered this crab quesadilla thing which was yummy. I ordered chorizo tacos they came with some delicious guacamole. During both of my visits the staff didn't seem stingy with the nachos they kept coming and were accompanied by a spicy salsa dip. This place is adjacent to the Eisenhower movie theater and across from a few other diverse restaurants, but I would choose this place any day for a few drinks or a meal before or after a movie.

  • Diana J.

I'll start with the good, it's conveniently located, serves cheap food & drinks that come quick & also never made me sick and the wait staff is always really nice and very attentive! I used to really like this place when I first moved in the area (2002), but it just seems like things are starting to fall waist side... the food is edible, but you should know that it's not really a place you choose to go to and expect great authentic Mexican, at best you will get a decent Tex-Mex. I don't really go here anymore because of the way things have gotten as the years passed, the place really needs a make over/renovation and the food needs to be revamped!

They're only getting one star because our waiter was nice. This experience was awful beginning to end *we arrived and it was extremely warm in the restaurant. It's DC in the summer, and the lights at your table give off heat. Adjust the A/C to account for that *it took some time for anyone to come see us, and when our waiter finally took our drink order it was a long time making it to the the table and we had to ask for chips and salsa *the food. Yuck. My Lomo Saltado was basically a plate of soy sauce. Yuck. *and the worst part was the sketchy antics of the manager on duty. We had ordered margaritas with call tequila. We realize that this results in an up charge which is fine. We'd rather have good tequila. But here's where the sketchy comes in. Our waiter brings our check and lets us know we were charged more, but we were charged twice as if it were two separate drinks for one margarita. And the resulting charge is far more than one would expect for just using call tequila. Furthermore when the manager came over he was well aware he had been sketchy as he started with the fact that he'd take the weird second charge off the bill Again, if our waiter hadn't been friendly and helpful through all of this it would have been my first zero star review. There is nothing redeemable about this place.

This restaurant is conveniently located next to the Hoffman Center movie theatre. I stop in to grab a drink before the movies. Hunny boo boo chile let me tell you that the drinks here are on point for sure! Want something strong before that funny movie? Want something to relax you before the movie? Want a buzz before the movie? STOP HERE FOR A MARGARITA!! House, customized or whatever all of there Margarita's are good and STRONG. I ordered an appetizer of nachos and they were pretty good. I honestly haven't eaten a full meal here in a very long time but I do recall them having great fajitas. Definitely worth the stop!

Good Happy Hour Prices. Great place to eat a bite before catching a movie. Favorites are the Grande Nachos and the Shrimp in butter sauce. Clean with friendly staff.

I had the worst tasting corona-Rita I've ever had at this restaurant and trust me, I've had them at a lot of places. It had an odd taste and color. The food, chicken quesadilla was average but the queso dip tasted like Velveeta. I'm quite certain it's probably a generic version of the processed cheese sold by the vat. Our server was attentive all night until we asked him for the check then he came back 15 minutes later. We had a movie to get to so we were all standing up so he would notice we were serious about being ready for the check. The best part of the experience there was the Dos Equis Light. I would only go back to have drinks before a movie. If you looking for good food, go pretty much anywhere else.

3 stars at happy hour for cheap eats and cheap margaritas. Make sure to get there early though to grab a seat as the happy hour deals are only good at the bar area and seats go quickly!

  • Matthew S.

I wasn't a fan. The food made me sick (had the tamales), people waited too long to get their food, and it was very loud and noisy. It also is not a kid friendly place (don't bring your kid if he or she is younger than 6 years old). The only redeeming thing about the place was they have very good chips and salsa dips. Their guacamole and queso dip are very good too. I tried my mothers carne asada and that was good too. The rice was average and the refried beans were too watery. If I return I'll change my preferences, but this was not a good first impression.

Great place for drinks and the food is good too, love their fried plantains. Just feels more Cuban than Mexican for food options...I've described it as high class Mexican food.

I love this place. The margaritas are cheap and taste delicious! I think it was only $3.99 for a Strawberry during happy hour. I also love their spinach and cheese enchiladas. It is a large open layout with plenty of room for groups. They usually are accommodating about splitting the checks, as well. We usually stop in when we hit a movie, as it is right next door. Good location and good atmosphere if you are looking for a casual, laid-back meal.

I am a huge fan of this place...but your experience at this restaurant is all about what YOU'RE looking for. When I've came here, it's only been Happy Hour. (yes, in the past, I've been here for regular dining--pass, there's other places that you'll might enjoy a little better). But! HH! Fantastic! It's everyday from 3-7PM, plenty of libations to choose from (they do make mean margaritas, so be careful). Good selection of quick bites, guac, sliders, salsa--the usual but enjoyable. Like most HH's, if you sit directly at the bar, you'll receive better service, but the high tables in the bar are still nice and you don't feel completely abandoned. In fact, all the bartenders/waiters are very friendly, if needed, quick eye contact and they'll be right over. Food and drinks come out very fast, and if you're just there to grab a quick drink and snack on some chips and salsa before the movie (movie theatre is next door) that's fine! They don't make you feel awkward for just wanting a 'little something' before the movie. Should at least give it a try. ;)

I dropped in because I had some time to kill before my movie started next door. No one was by the door to greet me when I walked in and then I sat at the end of the bar because I didn't see any other available seats. I sat here for almost 10 minutes with no acknowledgment from any staff though a few made eye contact with me. I moved to be further from the cold air from the entrance. Still...no greeting or acknowledgement!! After 10 more minutes a server I hadn't seen yet walked up to me and took my order. I wasn't given a menu or offered chips and salsa. My margarita came promptly and was delicious. I literally still cannot believe the poor service. I would have walked out but it's too cold out to try another bar, at this point I def deserve this drink!!

If I could could choose one place to eat for the rest of my life around here, it would be this place. Amazing food and good drinks. Try the Asado Puertorriqueno! Especially medium rare. You won't be sorry.

  • Roberto L.

Food is ok. This is not authentic mexican but it gets the job done. There is a Puerto Rican plate there call asado or adobo puertorriqueño which does not meet any expectation. Prices are alright for the area. I love the happy hours and appetizers which that will be my recommendation.

I tried the lomo saltado again and really enjoyed it. Looks like they went back to the regular size portion again. I will be back to have it again!

They have the standard Tex-Mex fare but the standouts for me are the specialities. Try the Ropa Vieja which is a Cuban dish of shredded beef stewed in tomatoes and peppers (Think of really good pot roast with Latin flavors!) and served with rice, black beans, and fried plantains. Really good. My dining companion had the Tacos Mexicanos with beef that were also excellent. Flavorful, juicy, and really good.

This qas my first time going to a san antonio grille and immediately fell in love with it. From the traditional spanish decorations on the wall and the feel of the place, you definitely get a good feel for culture. The staff is always smiling and very polite. As soon as we sat down we were given water and salsa and chips, which tasted great. The salsa has a different flavor which I've never tasted before and I appreciated that. Now for the food, AMAZING. Ive had several different dishes and the cajun seafood pasta has great flavors and definitely enough for leftovers. The shrimp is tender and the scallops and clams are never over cooked. Also the jambalaya is great and and not too salted and the flavors were just right. Ive never had tamale before and always wanted to try it and I do not regret the "plato azteca" one bit. Based on nothing but my taste buds, it was pretty good and cooked to a right consistency. It was gritty on the outside (reminded me of grits) and the filling was pretty good. The enchiladas were great also and was just burst in my mouth of flavors. The location is definitely convenient, right next to the movie theatre and other restaurants, also free parking. It could be hard to find a spot since this place always seens to be crowded. We have been on a weekend and weekday and both times it was crowded. But I am a fan of SAG and would never miss an opportunity to revisit this place. Also, WHO DOESNT LIKE CHEAP DRaNKSSSSS?! (I been dranking, i been dranking lol)

I understand why such a convenient and cozy venue had about 10 ppl inside on a Friday night. The customer service is awful. Most of the employees don't speak English. My brother and me called from different phones trying to place an order and the same female would answer and put us on hold w/o returning. When I finally got there a nice guy said he knew who was responsible and grabbed the manager. The manager hesitantly walked over and gave a dry apology. I told him I would like wings and a drink. He signaled me to the bar for my drink. Really?!?! He discounted the wings but I would have preferred full price for better service. I give 2 stars because the margarita was good and the host was pleasant with attempting to rectify the situation.

We've been here 4 times and counting. It's right next to the theatre (WIN!). Every employee we've met has been nothing short of wonderful, always greeting us with a smile. They have great drinks and great food. It's also quite reasonably priced.

Probably my favorite restaurant in the area. The lady and I love going to this place for date nights. I was born and raised in San Diego, but lived in Austin for a while so you could call me a Mexican food savant. This place has Tex-Mex on lock. I've probably been here at least eight or nine times now, and have gotten something different every time I've visited and haven't ever been disappointed. You can't go wrong with this place. The staff has always been really friendly and very attentive to me, even when it's really busy. I'd recommend this place to anyone.

YUMmy!!!! This place was very very good and tasty. I had beef tacos and man they were authentic and hot and delish. Friend had the ribs and said they were equally very good. Chips and salsa were very good, and the service was super prompt. Right next to the movie theater can it beat that? I'll definitely be back to grab lunch or dinner next time i catch a flick over there.

The food was unsatisfactory. We were also charged for sauce that came with the nachos which is normally free in any Mexican restaurant. I've had better food and service in any other Mexican restaurant I've been to

Came here for time to kill until our movie started and what we ordered was so yummy my kid who is the toughest critic ate all his quesadillas with no hesitation and for my husband and I we ordered the Grande nachos with mixed chicken and ground beef the beef was kinda ehh but the chicken omg so good and the spicy salsa omg delish!! Definitely coming here more often and as soon as this baby pops going to check out that happy hour ;)

Came here for lunch before seeing a movie with some girlfriends on a Saturday afternoon. Food was pretty good.. I ordered the asado puertoriqueno which was a huge steak and white rice. Very well seasoned. The Waiter was not very attentive once we got our food for it not to be crowded. Had to flag him down to try and get him back to our table. Food was pretty good though.

One of my good friends simply loves this place, and I guess the fact that I endure it every time she is in town is proof of our friendship. The food always seems to have a bland, plastic taste to it, perhaps they use substandard cheese in the burrito. In any event, this is one of my least favorite Tex-Mex restaurants, and try as I might, I haven't been able to convince my friend that Taco Bell would be a step in the right direction. However, in all fairness, San Antonio Bar and Grill does have one thing over Taco Bell, and that is the Margaritas. Yes, the margaritas are grande and certainly help cut the bitter taste of average food and lackluster service. Still, many people seem to flock to this spot during movie/date nights, but can't but help wonder if it could stand on its own without the cinema. I mean, I often visit several of the restaurants in the area without taking in a movie; however, the only way I would go here is if my friend were literally dragging me in by my heels

My hubby and I had dinner here last night. The food was fantastic, the service excellent and the restaurant was clean, nicely decorated and spacious. The complimentary salsa and chips were some of the best we've ever had. Both of our combo plates were delicious. Flavors were well represented, the foods were nicely plated and everything was really good. Nothing bland, nothing over or under cooked. Our server was attentive but not hovering. He made great suggestions and was very knowledgeable of the menu. We will be back again. This will become one of our favorite spots, especially if we're going to see a movie as well.

My friends and I love this place. This has become our new hang out. Whenever we go it tends to not be crowded. We usually sit in the same booth every time we go. The last two times we've gone we had great servers. They were very friendly, made us laugh and made our night a fun one! The margaritas at this place are very good which is the main reason we like to go here. My favorite is the watermelon, the strawberry is good too. My friends like the mango and lime margaritas. Food wise the nachos are ok, I've had better. The chicken quesadillas are my favorite at the moment. I've also had chicken chimichanga and just thought it was alright, very filling though. My friends tend to get steak and love it every time. Needless to say we will continue to go here for our girls nights!

A-OK rating because this place was probably filled with people that walked out of the Ruby Tuesday's next door after horrendous service, (as we did), and it was refreshing to actually be acknowledged, at the bar, by an appreciative staff. It's not authentic Mexican food, but this establishment must be thrilled by their Hoffman Theater locale, next to a restaurant that rates 1 star on Yelp: yelp.com/biz/ruby-tuesda… yelp.com/biz/ruby-tuesda… I was most impressed that the Happy Hour runs until 8pm, so I will plan my movie dates to come here before. It's typical chain food fare. I ordered the chili and their version of sliders with chipotle mayo. He had the cheese enchiladas, that had a slightly sweet taste. It's fine food. But nothing bursts as memorable.

I'm hesitant to listen to negative reviews on Yelp because I chalk it up to just a crappy experience that probably happened out of chance. Let me tell you, while most of the reviews are pretty harsh, they are dead on! I would give San Antonio a one star if I actually complained to management or I could never see myself going there again but I did not complain and I could probably see myself there again if I lived in another universe where I wasn't married and Kate Upton asked me on a date here. My server was non-existent, we only ordered appetizers because we had a show to catch. We also ordered jumbo margaritas because I think we were going to watch a pretty bad movie and needed to be slightly inebriated to enjoy it. I should have just snuck airplane bottles into the theater and made myself a drink because the margaritas were awful. It was like they took unfrozen fla-vor-ice packets and mixed it with rubbing alcohol. It wasn't even busy!! I could see why this place is in business, it's one of the few restaurants in the complex and it's right next to the theater. I just feel bad for any theater goers who eat a full meal before watching a movie since they'll be spending most of the time thinking about how awful their dinner was.

We ordered food from here through eat24. For starters, we didn't get all our food. One of the things we ordered was supposed to be four sliders with fries. We only got 3 with no fries. They were dry and tasteless. The burger I ordered was supposed to be a spicy burger, but it was flavorless. I ordered medium well, and it came almost raw. The taco salad was almost all beans, and the small amount of meat was full of bone fragments. For 70 bucks we got cold, tasteless food, and probably the cheapest hamburger I have ever tasted. Will never order from here again.

The chips and salsa were just gross. The salsa tasted like it was mixed with nacho cheese. The mega margaritas tasted like juice and no alcohol whatsoever. The beef chimichangas are ground beef and needs to be seasoned with salt and pepper and a lot of hot sauce. My mom ordered the chile relleno and the breading on it was so thick almost like corn dog breading. When our server asked if she liked it my mom was honest and the server tried to justify that in different parts of Mexico they make them differently. It was so bland and had no flavor whatsoever. Then when it came time to pay, my mom wanted to pay but she ran off with my boyfriends card and didn't bother to listen to my mom when she yelled saying she wanted to pay. Idk who does that... But it was kind of rude. Don't think I'll be coming back.

Servers are inattentive and aloof. The food is mediocre along with the drinks. We come here to drink before a movie. In a good location though.

I think OK is all you can really say about the food that you are going to have there. We stopped in after seeing a 7pm movie on Friday evening and the service was pretty good at the bar area -- we sat at one of the open high tops in the bar area -- and it still took about 10 minutes for somebody to come by our table for water and chips/salsa. That seemed slightly odd since they knew that we had menus right there. I got the 3 carnitas tacos and they were OK -- very spicy and the meat was just OK. Fiance got the three tacos (1 chicken and 2 beef) and she really did enjoy them. They give you a whole lot of fixings so you can make a real good meal while you are there and it's not the bar bones by any means. Price isn't too bad either. We didn't do any drinks and got out of there for $25 with the tip included.

Very small portions, exorbitant prices and although they didn't mess us our order (which, from the reviews here would be a RARE thing) -- THEY MESSED UP OUR CREDIT CARDS when paying!! So if you're going here with friends or family -- doesn't matter whose bill you're signing. They'll mess something up -- that seems to be guaranteed! Now I feel for the guy who was complaining all the time at the table next to us. Should have read the reviews first before going here! One of the worst things about this place is the wait times. We waited over 45 minutes for our food and the place wasn't even half full. Because of the wait we missed our movie! Stay clear away from this place.

Great food! I've eaten here a few times and everything I've gotten has always been amazing! Their homemade salsa is really good- spicy but very good. Their drinks are strong and the staff is very friendly. I definitely recommend this place!

Honestly this isn't the type of restaurant I usually frequent but after being denied service at the Ruby Tuesdays across the street this place was like a welcome oasis. Our server was a delight even though our margaritas were a bit weak. The real winner of the night was their chicken wings which were perfectly fried and sauced. They were so good that my table ended up ordering two orders! If I ever make my way down to the Hoffman Movie Plaza again (which is probably NEVER) I would definitely say Hola to San Antonio Bar & Grill again.

Being from San Antonio myself...I'm embarrased to see the name they've chosen. This place is an absolutely horrible experience. I haven't seen service this bad since since Dr. Kovorkean last visited my second cousin...who still with us. The drinks are probably safe, but the food is some of the worst TexMex I've had since I vacationed in Scandanavia. Looking for a margarita before your movie...check it out...looking for ANYTHING CLOSE to TexMex...your better served by heading to Taco Bell!!! Now...THAT'S a sad state of affairs!!!

Against my better judgement, I visited this place 1/19/2013 and I should have heeded the yelpers when they said "stay away from this place." This is the worst Mexican food I ever had. People must come here for the drinks because the food is absolutely awful. I usually don't yelp, but please people, save your money. My food was so bad, I didn't want to pay for it. On the flip side, the service was great. The waiter was very attentive; perhaps because there was no crowd and it just opened.

best. happy hour. ever. This place is convenient in that it's right next to the Hoffman Center, but usually we just go for cheap food and drinks. Their chips and salsa and great - the salsa is actually spicy, not just watery ketchup like so many places - and the happy hour prices are SO good. oh, and available 7 days a week. That's right, you can get $2.00 domestics even on the weekends (3-8 pm). All apps except seafood are 1/2 off and the drink prices are the lowest I've ever seen around DC. Get the queso fundito. you won't regret it.

Ok. So I've always seen this place on the way to the movies. I've been meaning to go for a while and finally went for happy hour on a week night. The service was excruciatingly slow and the place generally understaffed, with a single guy at the bar during a busy happy hour, another waitress for the dinner area and no one at the door (despite a "please wait to be seated" sign). We waited forever to get the chips (a bit stale) and salsa (ok) and then waited for a while again to order drinks and waited another eternity to order. As I said, we went to the place for happy hour (until 8pm). There are good drink specials including a nice and strong frozen magarita. The hh menu was lacking in the food department, though. The limited happy hour menu was nachos, quesadillas, wings, sliders, hot dogs, chili, chile con queso, and some veggie and tortilla thing that I don't remember. I tried the wings (small) and the sliders (very sauce-y and not that great). Well at least I can say I've been there.

Stoped by after work for a margarita and caso. Happy hour margarita was out of a machine and very sweet, caso was freaking canned cheese sauce, the bar staff could not even provide napkins, f this place- 5 stars

This place could be great, considering its location, so it's too bad. The boyfriend and I stopped in to get some drinks and snacks before the movies. The staff was friendly and we were served quickly. The beer was good and cold, but the chips and salsa leave much to be desired. The chips aren't anything special and the salsa tasted like cold tomato soup. We ordered the chicken quesadilla appetizer, again, nothing special. I though the chicken tasted weird but he thought it was fine.

Commendations to Isa for her excellent service on Thursday December 25, 2014 AKA Christmas Day. Apparently there were only two servers that came to work on Christmas. I was sitting in the larger section and only saw Isa working that section. The half of the restaurant has a very small seating section. Not sure if someone was over there or not. The hostess seemed clueless. At one point Isa had to ask people to help serve food. She was holding down the entire section all alone and trying to get food out to people while it was still hot. She was polite and courteous. I'm not sure who the owner is, but the staff need some training on how to pitch in when short handed. The hostess for instance could have gotten water, chips and salsa immediately after seating guests. She could have found ways to help out the servers and cater to diners while keeping an eye on the door. The hostess also didn't seem to have any idea about appropriate seating. I watched her bring back several people and each time she'd walk to the middle of the room and say, "you can sit anywhere you like". She played with her hair a lot (a big no-no in the food service business). The one person helping bring out food didn't seem to know the table numbers. He kept taking food to the wrong places. Isa was excellent. The food was good thanks to Isa making sure orders came out hot in between taking orders, serving drinks and delivering checks.

Had time to kill before a movie, and I'm not a fan of the other restaurant (Ruby Tuesdays) that was connected to the theatre. When we walked it it was kind of an awkward set up. Wasn't sure if we should wait to be seated to just seat ourselves. Finally we took advantage of a open spot at the bar. My 6 buck large margarita was large and strong A++, best one i've had at a restaurant in awhile. Our bartender wasn't the friendliest nor the meanest. I ordered wings and almost had to cancel them because we were about to miss our movie. When I said that my wings magically appeared of course. They were pretty ok considering it's a Mexican joint (yea I realized the error in ordering wings at a other Mexican restaurants in the past). My bf got a huge Flat Tire (sp) beer that he seemed to enjoy. Overall it was ok. Good place to kill time and throw back tasty drinks. Well at least during happy hour.

I lived in Texas for 10 years, and this is the best Tex-Mex I've found in the DC area so far (been here for 7 years). I usually get the beef tacos mexicanos, and they're pretty good. If you're from Texas, this will be mainstream chain-style tex-mex to ya. Nothing special, but satisfies the cravings. Four stars simply because it's the best I've found in the area and the tacos are pretty darn good. Service is always very good. Location is great right next to the movie theater, and we've never had to wait or been late for a film.

Let me just say that Mexican food is my favorite and this restaurant was definitely a disappointment. I stopped in the other day to grab dinner with my boyfriend before a movie... and wished we had gone elsewhere from the moment our drinks were brought to our table. I try not to be overly critical, but as a former server - I know what great service entails and the service here was far from good. One food runner brought us chips & salsa WAY before our server even introduced himself. At this point we're parched and our server introduces himself as Jonathan and takes JUST our drink order. We came in here really hungry - already knowing what we wanted to order. What if we wanted appetizers? He comes back a few minutes later, takes our orders, and doesn't even bother to ask if we'd like refill on our chips and salsa. Minutes pass and we're in need of refills on our drinks at this point. Still hungry. Our chips & salsa basket are sitting at the edge of our table. Maybe our waiter would get the hint... NOPE. Another food runner brings us our food and we're ready to dig in. I think I gave him a look indicating that we'd like drink refills as well since he didn't ask. He comes back with a new Coke for my boyfriend and that's it. My glass is less than full. I ordered the Plato Azteca which was a combination of a chicken enchilada, chicken tamale, and a beef chile relleno. My boyfriend ordered the Aji de Gallina (a Peruvian chicken & rice dish that was on the daily specials sign out front of the restaurant). Literally 2 bites in, and I'm already thinking the food sucks. How hard can it be to make a decent tamale or chicken enchilada? My BF was like, "You didn't Yelp this place first? That's unlike you." Needless to say - as hungry as I was, I didn't come close to finishing my plate. THAT's unlike me. We decided we were done a good 10 minutes in. Did our server ever come to ask us how our food was? NO. Which means that we continued to sit with our trash (chips & salsa basket, straw wrappers, and empty glasses) for the duration of our "meal". He came back 15 minutes later AFTER we were clearly done and then asked us how everything was. I asked him for the check. We cringed at even having to pay for this experience, put the payment in the checkbook presenter and sat it standing up. We were beyond ready to go. A different friendly waitress who was tending to her nearby table saw that we had been sitting for a few minutes and waiting for our server to pick up the tab. She smiled and said, "I'll take care of this for you." She returned promptly. WHY was this the best service we'd had all night? Bottom line is I'd NEVER go here again. Obviously. I have a feeling the San Antonio Bar & Grill management doesn't check their Yelp reviews. This place is in dire need of improvement overall. I can't help but think that a good restaurant in its place would do exceptionally well for this location.

I frequent San Antonio Bar & Grill in Alexandria often after going to the movies @ Hoffman. As I was sitting in the restaurant today and finishing my entree, I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye... It was a roach! I informed the waiter, paid my bill & left. I will NOT be returning. Quite unfortunate...

I really would not recommend this bar and grill to anyone for anything. The food is mediocre at best and the drinks are sweet. I have tried the quesadillas, enchiladas and margaritas. The food was either bland or they decided to give more cheese than meat. This is really sad especially since its right next to the movie theater. It is a prime location for people to meet up before or after watching a film. This might be the reason why they don't try to impress their patrons with quality food and service. I have been there about 5 times with a group of friends and it is always the same thing...they always have people in there, but there is never a wait time for a table. If you are really hungry, I would recommend that you try the other restaurants nearby.

This cavernous Mexican restaurant near the Hoffman building serves slightly overpriced, definitely below average Mexican fare. Your first basket of chips is free, the rest - regardless of the size of your party - are a few dollars each. The menu is large, but there are very few options for the smaller appetite. If you're stuck working in the area, I can see why it would be a good lunch spot. But if you have the time to be picky, there are much better options close by. I came here before going to a movie during one of the crazy rainstorms we had in the fall of 2011. They had some major problems with the roof and it was leaking on me by the time my soup arrived, which was pretty gross. They were rather confused when I reseated myself, but come on! It's raining in my soup, people. When we came back a few weeks later - I know, I know - the damage had not yet been repaired.

We had a one day stay in Alexandria and the front desk of the hotel suggested this place for dinner. Not sure why this place is only getting a 2.5/5! We came for happy hour and got corona Rita's (delish) and ordered the hh nachos (beef), quesadilla (chicken) and the sliders. The quesadilla was good. The nachos were better than most Mexican restaurants and the sliders were out of this world (we ordered extras to take home). I wish I had access to this place at home because I'd come to happy hour all the time! The only reason it doesn't get a 5/5 is that the service was a little slow. Still worth coming in for a drink/bite.

So let me start by saying San Antonio Bar & Grill gets a 1 Star now because I know them when they were a 3.5 Star Bar. Yesterday I had the worst experience there in my life... 1)The Bartender was so excited about all that was going on around him with his friends being there that he didn't serve his customers or even acknowledge us at my table. 2) When you first walk in the bar area someone usually brings chips and salsa as you are still getting into your seat. NOT LAST NIGHT!!! 3) THERE WAS A HAIR FOUND IN MY NACHOS. Yes a Hair and this is after waiting 20 minutes and sending the manager to check on my food since the bartender/server wasn't paying us any attention. This was the worst experience for me directly. I have had friends that stopped going because they saw a bug walk across the middle wooden divider but I attributed it to the plants. I will start going to Shirlington!!!

Came here despite the bad reviews, because after all it's Cinco De Mayo weekend! I wanted a big old margarita, and a chimichanga. Unfortunately, after we were seated, ten minutes went by without so much as a greeting from anyone! No water, no acknowledgment, nothing. The bus boy dropped off some chips and salsa, so we were munching on those, and working up a thirst. The sad part is there was a table next to us, and the server was going over to them, but not us. It was like he was going out of his way to avoid us. I could see him going back to the bar texting, and hanging out with the other servers. So, we left. On the way out, I asked to speak to the manager, and they brought over that same server. Whatever. I politely told him, we've been sitting down for ten minutes, and no one came over, so we're leaving. He just said he apologized, and kind of shrugged his shoulders. Um, why didn't you acknowledge us buddy?!? We were ready to spend some money. Oh well. Won't ever come back to this place again.

This place is terrible! The food is bland and the bar service slow and inattentive. And, gasp, the margaritas are watery. The final blow was the check. They charged us full price for what was advertised as a half-priced, happy hour appetizer. When I complained to the waiter, he pointed vaguely at a sign that said nothing about seafood being an exception to the half off deal. Then the manager came over, apologized and said she was planning to change the menu. But when our bill was returned to us, it was exactly the same. In a neighborhood with plenty of choices, I won't be coming back here. I can't think of a single redeeming quality. Bad food and horrific service!

When we went here the service was good. My ropa vieja was freaking good. Meat was so moist and tangy. Haven't had steak like that ever. May have to revisit this place next week during the day when it's rainy and there's no one around.

Yummy food. Decent prices. A great place to grab a bite while waiting for your movie. Bar service was a little slow but it was one guy for the entire area. Yes the salsa is probably out of a can but it is so good I can over look that detail. Nachos are great. Happy hour specials are very affordable, you can't beat a $3 margarita!

If you're looking for a good place to hang out until your movie starts at the AMC 22 in Alexandria, this is the place. The restaurant is clean, service is good, and so too is the food. Try either the Plato Azteca or Plato Maya. Contrary to the Yelp info...this place IS open on Sundays from 11am to 10pm.

Heard that the place was good from a friend who also lives int he area. We figured since we live near the place we'd give it a try. We went on a saturday night around six thirty. The place was already filling up and since it is near the movie theater, it is always crowded. The hostess seated us as soon as we walked in. So a waitress comes over and we order our drinks, and immediately she starts asking us what we want to order. So we tell her we need a little time. So she walks off and comes back with salsa and chips. The salsa was pretty good. I liked that it was spicy and very flavorful. The chips were a dollar to re-fill. We didn't come anywhere close to needing a re-fill, and it's only a dollar to do do. I can see people coming in for drinks and just filling up on free chips until their movie starts. The drinks were slow in coming. We ordered the wings as an appetizer and told our waitress that we wanted to wait to order our food after we were finished with the apps. (so many places just rush you through if you do it any other way and you wind up with everything you ordered coming out almost at once.) Other couples were coming in after us and we watched as a couple to our right waited nearly twenty minutes for two margaritas and then the same thing with the couple to the left of us. I had a glass of wine and even though the waitress clearly looked at my empty glass a few times, I waved her down and asked for another. Our wings were good. Crispy and tender. Not home made.....probably some kind of a frozen brand, but they were ok. By this time, it was pretty clear our waitress was becoming overwhelmed. Either the bar was backed up or she was too green, but the people around us were getting irritated that they were waiting so long. We waited to let some of the dust settle before we ordered our main course because the manager was called over by the people to the left of us asking what the problem was. The manager was apologetic and said the waitress was new and somehow got too many tables. He came over to us as well and I told him it did seem a little confused. He assured us he would be helping out for the rest of the night and making sure everything was ok. After a while, the whole thing just became a big joke. Because ten minutes later, the couple to the left of us received tacos that were missing their shells. SERIOUSLY.....it was just taco meat in the holder with no taco shells. By this time we all just looked at each other and busted out laughing. I have to give them credit because they just let the waitress handle it, who instead of apologizing said, "I didn't make them!" And of course, no sign of the manager who said he was going to be keeping a better eye on things. The shame of it was that the food was pretty good. I had a steak fajita that was really good. Nice real chunks of steak seasoned well. The only thing I was not crazy about was the rice which was a little on the bland side with frozen vegetables mixed in. We opted to skip out of dessert and when the waitress took the check she failed to ask us if we needed change, and even though we did leave her a tip, as we passed her on the way out she didn't say thank you. would we go back? Maybe. It's within walking distance to our home. But maybe we'd stick with a weeknight visit or opt for sitting at the bar.

So our inexperienced server took to our chosen wine bottle with a sommelier corkscrew, easily twisting the screw into the cork. Then, the young lad started maniacally flexing his biceps with one hand holding the wine bottle and the other hand on the corkscrew handle. As I looked around the table, I watched as everyone's eyes widened in horror upon realizing the poor boy was trying to yank the cork straight out... ignoring the laws of physics and summoning all his brute strength to accomplish the task. Prompted by all the grunting coming from our corner of the restaurant, a manager quickly scurried to the table and pried the wine bottle from our server's fingers, then provided a demonstration on removing a cork using the lever on the corkscrew along with a gentle twist of his wrist. The good manager provided sincere apologies which were quite unnecessary. Watching my friends duck for cover from an impending red wine explosion was well worth the commotion. Very entertaining place for drinks before visiting the theater. Chips and salsa were mediocre.

This is the best place to go for happy hour... or before you hit a movie at the Hoff... The food is pretty good... the drinks are pretty good... and it's not super expensive... They also have this 60oz margarita that two are suppose to share... I'm pretty sure 4 people would be able to "get right" off of that one though...

No... Just, No. Spend your money elsewhere. -Forgettable, less-than-mediocre, bland food -Worse than average service (asking the waiter 3-4 times for an extra plate before it is brought, the second round of chips & salsa we requested never arrived) -You have to pay for the chips & salsa after the first round -Average prices for Tex-Mex food, but the dishes have less food than you'd usually get -There were people smoking while I was sitting outside -- not exactly appetizing There is a reason why there was no wait on a Saturday night. With so many decent Tex-Mex/Mexican restaurants around, there's no point in wasting your time here.

Ugh. Given the limited options for lunchtime dining, I've ended up here on more than one occasion. The food is edible. The service is abysmal. We've hit the bar for happy hour a couple of times, and the bartender seemed bothered by having to serve a few people. Two things on the plus side - the chips and salsa are delicious, and gratis! They are easy to eat too many of. (But pace yourself, once you finish off the salsa it will be a few eons before a waiter comes by again .) And the steak fajitas were quite tasty!

Where do I start with this place. The only good thing I can find from tonight's dinner was the clean table. I must've stood in front of the "Please Wait to be Seated" sign for a solid five minutes before someone even acknowledged my presence, despite several looks by the bartender and two of the wait staff. Of note here, at this time the restaurant was maybe 1/4 full, if that, so "we're busy" isn't even a valid reason. I was seated at a table and handed a menu and gave my drink order (a Coke). I then ordered a bowl of black bean soup and a beef burrito. I would have expected the soup to come before the main entree, not *with* it. The soup tasted like it was fresh from the can. Frankly, I've had Progresso Black Bean soup that was better than this stuff. Now the entree, I'm baffled how the plate can be *hot*, yet the burrito was *lukewarm* at best. And to be prepared and served that quickly surely indicates it was frozen to begin with. Granted in all fairness here, nothing was ever presented to promised to be "fresh". Halfway through my meal the cheese on my burrito had congealed, the refried beans had gotten cold, and I'm not sure what happened to the rice. Suffice to say I did not finish my meal and it is a good thing because as I sit here four hours later I am sick to my stomaching and am "vurping" (vomit burping) about every two minutes. Then there was the [lack of] service. Not once did my server check on me, despite the empty soda glass. And I was sitting in full view of the dining room, excuse me, cafeteria setting. Despite repeated gestures it took a bit over 10 minutes to get my check so I could pay. I was about 30-seconds away from fishing cash out of my pocket, leaving it on the table, and walking out. When someone finally did come to check on me, it was a different server. Again, this place was not that busy. I counted maybe 10-12 tables with customers. Someone commented this place doesn't have to do that well given its proximity to the movie theater (attached). But there are plenty of other places quite literally across the street, and even Ruby Tuesday's is also attached. I'm not a big fan of the yuppie truck stop (Ruby Tuesday's) but to be sure if I eat a meal again before seeing a movie, it won't be here at San Antonio Bar & Grill. Nope. Not going to do it. I'd have been better off with a couple movie theater hot dogs and some nacho chips, if nothing else, I'd at least have a fighting chance they would have been "fresh".

This is one of my favorite places to go for food and beverages in Alexandria, and it's close to home as well! They have one of the best happy hours in the area and a very friendly wait staff. I recommend the steak fajitas and the beef nachos!

Not a culinary hot spot but the cheap and large Margaritas at happy hour prices, $6 (basically 2 fairly strong drinks), make this a regular destination when i need a drink after a long day.

Bad food, bad service, bad margaritas. Skip it.

I HAVE FINALLY FOUND GOOD CHIPS AND SALSA HERE!!! I'm from San Antonio, and we eat chips and salsa all the time. If you've been to SA, you know what I speak of. Anyway, I thought this area had no good chips and salsa to offer, but I was wrong, and I'm very happy I was. Before going on with this review, let me tell you that this review is strictly for happy hour and the chips and salsa. I didn't get to actually eat here. This was more of a let's-have-a-drink-before-our-movie type of pit stop. About the Chips and Salsa: Just like home. The chips are brought out to you nice and warm. Perfect chips with a good crunch, and the best part was that they were all actually whole chips and not just crushed crap. The salsa was fantastic! It was absolutely fresh. It had just the right spice kick to it and the most perfect consistency. For those who don't realize the importance of salsa consistency, it's importance lies in the part of when you pick the salsa up with your chip and see that the salsa stays on the chip as you gracefully airplane that chip to your mouth. Oooooooh yeeeaaah... About the Happy Hour: What a happy hour! $2 domestics $3 imports, $2.75 for the small margarita (the size of a regular margarita anywhere) and $6 for a large (brought out in a huge chalice), and half-price appetizers. You CANNOT go wrong with that! The margarita prices includes the flavored margs as well. My fiance and myself ordered a couple of lime margaritas. She got the small while I ordered the large. I must say, our bartender was on point. I wasn't expecting such a good margarita for a happy hour drink. Kudos bartender...kudos...

This review is for Happy Hour Only... San Antonio has the BEST Happy Hour! From 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm every day you can enjoy half-priced appetizers (with the exception of the seafood apps), $2.75 small margaritas (regular and flavored), $6 large margaritas (regular and flavored), $1.75 domestic beer, and $2 well drinks. Woohoo! I've tried a couple of their appetizers, and both were really good. The chips and salsa are pretty tasty too. My only complaint there is they tend to be pretty stingy with the chips and salsa.

A Mexican restaurant and bar located adjacent to the Hoffman 22 movie complex. The food is just average, in the moderate price range. Standard mexican at best. The drinks are average as well -- not bad, just average. HOWEVER, the service here is really poor, and for the price and the otherwise average food, I'd say go elsewhere. There are great other places in this complex, like Galae Thai, California Tortilla, Ted's Montana Grill, Yve's, and Delia's that are better value and enjoyment for the money. And all are equally convenient to the movie theater.

They charge extra for every little thing, like a dollup of sour cream. i was so sick of the waiter appologizing for having to charge us, but then he added 20% tip our bill. I was insulted. Food was ok, but I won't be back.

Ugh. I really debated on giving this place one star but I've decided to be generous and go with two. So R and I were in the area to see UP in 3D at the iMAX theater nearby. R had suggested buying tickets in advance but I didn't think that was necessary. Well...we get to the theater and the showing had sold out. I had an angry R on my hands. So I hoped and prayed that maybe some margaritas and maybe some Southwestern fare would cheer him up. I had bookmarked this place a while ago and was aware of the mostly poor ratings but thought it was worth a shot anyway just to see for ourselves. Since I was trying to redeem myself to R you better believe I was hoping we'd get lucky with this place. We did not. We entered and it was on the quiet side, although we were there a little early for dinner so it didn't seem unusual. We headed for the bar and took our seats. Two bartenders were behind the bar but their eyes were glued to the replay of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Since there weren't many patrons the place was on the quiet side but the bartenders never turned to look to see if there were any new customers or if the folks already at the bar needed anything. We waited a good 5 or so minutes and R was getting pretty irritated. He said "Excuse me mate, could we get some drinks?". The bartender was pretty startled. That can't be a good sign. The bartender came over and asked what we wanted. We weren't offered menus. Since we were looking to try out their margaritas I said, "What's your best margarita?" The bartender just shrugged at me. I replied, "Okay, I'll just take a regular margarita then". He went over to one of those drink mixer machines that you normally see at Auntie Anne's that's mixing lemonade or some other fruit drink. He filled a glass with the contents of the machine and put it in front of me. I have never seen anything like this in my life before! The margarita was poor. Worst one I've ever had. It was watery and I don't think there was any tequila in it. I believe R ordered a beer. He mostly orders bottles so he was fine with his beer. The bartenders went back to ignoring everyone and watching TV. The rest of the waitstaff just sort of lingers around aimlessly. We were never asked if we needed anything else, or wanted any food. We finished our drinks, paid our bill and promptly left. I don't plan on ever wasting anymore of my time or money on this place again.

The service was outstanding, our waiter was always right at our table with drink refills, the food was beyond delicious, the steak will melt in your mouth. The fried ice cream was delectable. If you eat here, you won't leave hungry.

Great place for a drink after work. The margaritas are cold and the appetizers are hot. What more can I ask for? Oscar, the manager, is a really cool dude, too.

I have been here about a dozen times, nothing stellar. BAD service - I recently went on Friday January 15, 2010 - I had to get up out of my seat lean over the bar (I know right) and ask one of the 3 servers if we could get some service. Only went in to pass the time until the movie began ... we were almost late to movie because of the service. On January18, 2010 went back - b/c Ruby Tuesday's was booked - San Anto not crowded - we were seated by the server?manager? and never received service. 15 total minutes. We left. So. In one weekend - in which I gave the damn place a chance to receive business San Anto FAILED big time. Have fun waiting if you decide to go.

I really try to only give one stars reviews to the worst of the worst. This came amazingly close to that one star. I dropped by here to get a bite to eat before seeing the Watchmen and I wish I hadn't. The salsa is closer to ketchup than actual salsa. Queso, more like nacho cheese. I ordered the Plato Azteca which is a chile relleno, beef enchilada and chicken tamale. The tamale texture was more like gritty gelaten, the chile relleno was far too sweet and the enchilada lacked any kind of taste. An overall all complete disappointment. Any of the other restaruants nearby the theatre would have been a better choice. I left and found out that my IMAX showing had been sold out so the party that met up with me all wanted to go back here (I had eaten there, they had not) to grab a beer. I presented an ID to the waitress when I ordered a beer and she flipped it over and back close to 8 times and looked incredibly confused. After a good 30 seconds of staring at my ID, I told her where the birthdate was located, she looks back and says, "I do this everyday, I know where it is." Just trying to help, lady. The wretched food and poor service combined can only mean I'll never be stepping foot into this establishment ever again.

Just moved to the area and live right next door. I gave this place two chances and both were epic failures when it comes to service. The last time we ate there, some dude was completely ignored at his table by the wait staff and he ended up storming out after a couple was served their dinner before his order was ever taken-they arrived well after he did. They won't keep us coming back on food alone which is overpriced Mexican food. There are plenty of delicious Mexican food restaurants for a portion of the cost. Save your money and hit up California Tortilla in the same plaza if you're ever in the area and craving a dang quesadilla. ;)

I went here on Cinco de Mayo, and I was really dissapointed on pretty much every front. The food isn't all that bad, It's good, but it's not anything to write home about, or for that matter yelp about. The drinks are cold, the prices for alcohol are about average for Alexandria, and it's ridiculously close to a movie theater and where I work. That ends the good things about this place. The bad stuff, The service is simply abysmal, they don't seem to get that if you do separate checks (and i've had this happen a few times), you can't just stick all the things you can't figure out where they go on a communal bill for a few of the people here and there and stick the people in the group that don't leave early. I've ordered things that I've never received, but still got charged for the item... just avoid it, unless you've got no place else to go. I have had good experiences here in the past, but then, I am beginning to feel it's a fluke.

We made the mistake of thinking that the movie 2012 would not be sold out. What is it with America and bad apocalyptic movies? (we knew it would be bad) Regardless, enter Ruby Tuesdays, which was half full and thought we would be seated immediately, right? WRONG. 40 minute wait. Exit Ruby Tuesday. Enter San Antonio Grill on the OTHER side of the IMAX theater. No wait. Large space, fairly quiet, most people are into their conversation and/or their food (my kind of crowd). My boyfriend ordered a yummy salad with apples, pears, shrimp and cranberries (my kind of salad!). My caesar salad was good, as was my rice and marinated strip steak. Not the best but certainly not the worst. Was seated quick, chips came out quick (and their salsa has a bit of kick!), waiter came out quick, food came out quick. We ate it quick (to catch the next showing) and got the check quick. For some reason, I guess because of the exterior, I expected bad service. You just get this feeling about bad service. But our service was speedy, efficient and our drinks were filled when almost empty. Whew! Check came in and it was 30 bucks for 2 people (which is cheap to me, coming from New York). A good way the pass the time if waiting for a movie and I think, the previous bad reviews of service must be the same two (one?) guys. I hope they are fired and I'm glad it wasn't my guy. The End.

Whenever I walk into a restaurant and part of the staff is sitting down watching TV in the front of the restaurant, I immediately start to shake uncomfortably. To say that my ladies' drink was alcoholic would be an understatement, she ordered a top shelf margarita NOT a frozen glass of top shelf tequila! But I digress, the nachos were made with a blended of actual shredded cheeses, MAGNISIMO! The wait staff is slow, but their DELIVERY is top notch. this a shitty place to sit down and have a meal but I've had good experiences with delivery.

If it were possible to do negative stars...I would rate this as a negative 5. The service was terrible, the food was worse and to top it all off...the management CLEARLY doesn't give a sh!t. Don't bother complaining when your carnitas come out tasting like pork jerky. And when your frozen margarita comes out tepid...ditto. Don't bother asking for a new one. You won't get it. WORST DINING EXPERIENCE EVER!! Don't go there if you value your stomach.

I'm not gonna be a complete hater. I got chips, I got salsa, I got fajitas, I got a regularly filled drink. Is it sad that that is enough to satisfy me these days? This town just doesn't do Mexican. Nope. You can wish all you want to but it's just not gonna happen. Sigh.

Hmm .... the bar is sooooo soo smokey, but there are great happy hour specials (at the bar only). The food is hit or miss here. My boyfriend had a really good steak fajita (although to me it tasted like it was marinated in soy sauce) and I had a really really underwhelming chicken chimichanga with no flavors. The steak fajita was good but small for the price paid (I think it was $22). I really like their guacamole which is served with chunky salsa and piles of cheese.

i've been here 3 times and using the 3-strike rule, SABG is most definitely, OUT. when you consider that i grew up in california, it's pretty amazing that i even gave this so-called tex-mex place that many chances. i'm convinced that they are only still in business b/c of their location - right next to the movie theatre, across from ruby tuesday's and in a little strip of a few other restaurants that cater to pretty specific tastes (chinese food, seafood, etc). i'm willing to bet that a lot of SABG's patrons wind up there for the same reason(s) i and my date did on my last visit there - 1) we weren't in the mood for any of the other types of dining options, 2) most of the other restuarants were closing soon [SABG is open 1 hour later than all the other establishments in the strip other than the movie theatre and RT's], and 3) we needed to kill time/eat before our movie started. so, mr. date and i enter SABG and wait to be greeted and seated. and wait. and wait. and WAIT. i'm getting irritated b/c a server is less than 10 feet from us chatting away with some diners who are obviously his friends and he's just a hootin' and hollering back and forth with them like they're all at his house chillin'. this fool even looks up at us, and goes back to talking to his buds. i was ready to leave right then, but i let my growling stomach and some girly date-etiquette win. (you don't pitch fits and abandon your last dining option when on a first date and said date is being very sweet and patient, not to mention nuzzling your neck and planting soft kisses on your cheek!) so we waited some more, and since no host/ess ever showed up we finally just decided to seat ourselves at the bar. get this: server boy who was chatting it up with his friends? yeah, he wasn't a server at all, but the bartender! we sat for several minutes before he left his friends at the table, and then a few more minutes after he went back to his post behind the bar before he acknowledged us and gave us menus. when we we started to order this idiot cuts us off mid-sentence and is all, "no, you don't want that. that f*cking sucks. let me tell you what's good." he then proceeded to tell us 4 or 5 other things that "f*cking suck," or "tasted like sh*t," or similar before telling us the the couple of things he thought worthwhile to order. now, i'm not a prude and definitely can get my sailor mouth on from time to time, but i never am so presumptuous to assume that it's ok to talk like that in the presence of someone i've just met...especially not if i'm at work!!! WTH?! so this cocky little punk finishes his tirade about his employer's "crappy food" and then segues right into a self-praising rant about how awesome his mojitos are, pointing to a banner over the entryway that says he won some mixology competition for same. ok, whatever. in an effort to get him to shut up we ordered mojitos. what's worse is that they were good. not great, not amazing enough to make up for his unprofessional, rude, inappropriate behavior...but damnit they were good. i begrudgingly admitted so to my date, and he agreed. the food came shortly after our drinks, and like my previous visits, was just so-so. enchiladas, tamales, rice, beans. pretty basic stuff. the only thing i liked more than a little was the guacamole, when they finally remembered to bring it (had to ask 3 times). my date was good. the drink was okay. the food was mediocre. the service was horrible. i'll see the guy again. i'm not going to give SABG any more chances.

A group of friends and I arrived really early and very hungry for a movie at AMC, just next door to San Antonio. I had never been before, but a few people in my group had, and said it would be better to opt for the Ruby Tuesdays across the way. We walked right past San Antonio and into the empty Ruby Tuesday, where the hostess explained that there would be a 20 minute wait. There were tons of other people waiting, too! We just didn't have the time to wait before the movie, so we went back across the way to San Antonio just for a quick bite. My friends who had been before were not enthused, saying the food had been a little crappy on their previous visits. I was excited because I love even Tex-Mex variations of latin food. Our waiter was excellent from the get-go, he recommended drinks and was really quick with the chips and salsa, my favorite. The chips were wonderful, hot and crispy, and the salsa was delicious. (I love chips and salsa, I've become a connoisseur!) San Antonio offers free chips and salsa for the whole table, and one free "refill," after which there is a small refill fee. We demolished the yummy chips and the free refill, and our waiter brought us one more refill on the house! The sangria and HUGE margarita were super delicious. We expected the food to be sub-par, but San Antonio pleasantly surprised us. My seafood enchiladas featured fresh shrimp, scallops, and avocados in a wonderful cheesy sauce. My companions also enjoyed their dishes, everything was very fresh. We joked with the water about Chef Gordan Ramsey having turned around San Antonio on Kitchen Nightmares. At the end of the meal, three of my friends suggested shots of Petron. My boyfriend and I opted out because we had already downed those ten pound margaritas and wanted to be conscious for the movie. Our wonderful waiter brought shots for all five of us and only charged us for the three we ordered. San Antonio isn't going to be a fine dining experience, but it was lots of fun, the food was satisfactory, and the service was great. We'll definitely be back!

The service was okay. I always start with that because I'm big on service. The sangria was meh because the chunks of fruit kinda grossed me out and the drink wasn't strong enough by far. The sangria was also supposed to have brandy in it but i could not taste it.Chips and salsa were gross. The guacamole and beans were tasteless and had no flavor. The only reason this place received 2 stars was because the chicken and steak had flavor and were pretty tender. Drive to Chevys which is only 10 away from this bland and boring restaurant.

We went here for their "Fried Ice Cream" and Drinks. I had a peach margarita which was really yummy. The waitress suggest the MEGA margarita cause they put more alcohol in them. Well it taste peachy but not so much on the alcohol part like she raved about. My girl - friend had ordered the Fried Ice Cream and complained that the ice cream was super cold it was more like a frozen ball of ice cream with fried layer on top. The beers are cheap $4 for a modelo! I dont like tex mex food so we didnt eat anything else. Oh and their Chips & Salsa dip watch out they pack alot of heat in the dip!

Our server Dan was great. We wanted to sit in the bar so that we could get happy hour prices, but since it was full we sat in the restaurant area. We still received happy hour prices. Margarita's were great. Food was ok. Service was awesome. We will go back again, not so much for the food, but for the drinks and service.

The food and drink is good but the service is bad. My waiter is not very attentive. We actually had to look for him to order.I guess they got businesses because it is right next to the amc theater.

Went here last week because its right next to the AMC movie theater, and I must say I was satisfied. Its standard tex-mex, not great, i think the austin grill is better, but this one sure is convenient if you want to go to the movies after! Hard to beat the 2.75 margaritas during happy hour :)

I work nearby and was told that this place had good happy hour prices. Some coworkers went on a day that I was unable to go. It was nice outside so they decided to sit on the patio. The waiter took their orders and waited until drinks and food were brought out to inform them that outdoor seating is not eligible for happy hour prices. No where in the restaurant or on the menu is that noted. When I went with other coworkers, we sat at the bar. The bar only had a few other people there, who already had their drinks, yet the bartender ignored us for several minutes. Eventually he asked two people, out of our party of six, for their drink orders. We thought once he got their drinks, he would get to the rest of us. Wrong. He went back to doing absolutely nothing. Some waiters and the manager were standing nearby so a coworker asked them for service, and they simply said we would have to ask the bartender. After waving the bartender back to us, we asked for the margarita happy hour specials and separate checks. I saw that the sign said flavored margaritas were only $2.75, so I asked what flavors they had. The bartender handed me a drink menu and walked away. When he finally came back I asked for the Cranberry margarita. After we finished our drinks, we asked for the check, which was not separated even though we asked for it to be. I noticed my drink was $6.95. When I asked why that was, I was told by the bartender that cranberry is not one of the flavored margaritas and he walked away. I paid, and the former waitress within me also made me tip. I still felt slighted. On the way out I asked the manager why I was not charged for a happy hour flavored margarita. He said cranberry is not a flavor. Confused by this ridiculous statement, I asked what he considered a flavor. He said mango. I asked him if he know the definition of flavor. I told him both were fruits and flavors, and if some are $2.75 while others are $6.95, that should be noted SOMEWHERE. He said if we didn't like it we could go somewhere else. So we did.

I attended a private party there on Friday and the drinks were watered down. We had shots and they were awful. It was not until I asked for the manager and insisted they bring a new unopen bottle and have it poured at the table did the drinks taste how they were suppose to. Also we were there for close to 5 hours and being charged gratuity but had to ask the manager to have the waiters come clean the tables that were piled with plates and glasses. I will never visit that establishment again.

Everytime I walk in I have high hopes that it will be better than last time, but then I'm always disappointed. Food is rather average, and the Margaritas are tasty, but don't help out too much.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
