Nice little cafe in the middle of the Del Ray Avenue. There's nothing flashy or unusual about Mancini's. They do everything well, and have a nice pastry section and coffee selection to go along with mostly standard breakfast fare. What makes them a great spot is that they have a large space, they move a large volume of folks through breakfast without missing a beat, and do it with a smile. If you're looking for a less crowded option for breakfast OR a quick stop for a bite or a coffee, this is a great option. They also have a nice little outdoor seating area for those cool spring mornings.

I got a breakfast sandwich and coffee and it was just "okay". I would try it again if I was in a hurry (although it took about 10 minutes to get the bacon, egg, cheese sandwich). It costs me $9.17 for the little sandwich and small coffee. Totally not worth the price. It took a while to make, but it was Sunday morning, so I'll give them a break. The more I write about this place, the worse I feel about my visit, especially after realizing I paid $9.17....:) P.S. The desserts looked nice here, but I didn't try them, so I can't say if they are good or not!

Pros: it's close to my house? I dunno. Cons: food is mediocre at best and the price of the food does not match the quality. Also takes too long. In contrast, food also takes a while at Stompin Ground, but it's actually worth the wait. Coffee is also mediocre (which is strange given that Swings roasting company is nearby and literally every other place on the block brews it). In another review, someone mentioned they charge $.25 for a cup of water...actually, they charge .25 for a CUP... I asked for a cup to pour my step son's juice into and they would not give me a damn cup. Fuck this place. 0 stars. Will not return. I've given it three tries and each time has sucked.

The reviews were all pretty much consistent with my experience here. The food is the worst and not at all worth the price. The omelettes are greasy, the benedict dishes are disgusting, overloaded with a painfully average hollondaise sauce. I've also heard of horrific customer service experiences. The owner letting her friend cut the line while others are waiting. The friend says "she's in a rush". I wish I had been there to witness that b.s. I guess people in Del Rey are just desperate, especially people with small children seem to enjoy this hellhole of an establishment. 25 cents for a cup for water is absurd. Their coffee tastes like sh*t and should not be more than 2 dollars. Worst of all, after paying too much for mediocre food, you're expected to bus your own table. If I ever have the unfortunate displeasure of having to dine there again under some sort of life or death circumstance, I will leave it all on the table. They can suck it.

I live two blocks from this place and it is super convenient which is always a plus. I have only been there for coffee and for brunch, so I can't speak about the sandwiches but the lunch menu does look remarkable. The coffee is alright and their breakfast is quite delicious. The ambiance is quite alright and the pastry and deli case is an absolute work of art. My only real problem with this place, however - and it's a HUGE one - is the service. Based on the other reviews I've seen, it seems to be the way it is But that's still no excuse. Every time I've ever gone in there - and I will admit that it's becoming less and less frequent over time - I have been treated as a nuisance. It's usually the same woman that helps me and she always acts like I am an unnecessary distraction, barely paying attention, refusing to engage in chat, rolling her eyes, huffing and puffing, and rushing me through the transaction. And, oh yeah, you better know damn sight what you want when it's time to order and order it without hesitation or she will get more and more sour. One time I went and I ordered something that they wound up being out of and so I had to quickly come up with a substitute, her eyes and sighs flinging daggers at me the whole time. Being that Mancini's is in Del Ray where there are about two dozen places you can get breakfast/brunch, you would think they would try to go that extra mile in order to ensure repeat business. The place is always pretty crowded so I guess they just don't care. I gave this place three stars because of the food. Because, while it's nothing out of this world, it is quite tasty. And, honestly, I am sure I will go back there. Probably sometime this month. And I am sure I will catch a bad attitude while I am there and it will irritate the hell out of me. And I will start this whole process all over again....

I give it 3 1/2 stars. I was driving to Mama Reacer"s Soul Food just a block away and they were not open, even though the sign sez..."New Hours, Sun open at 9am. I waited about 15min.........nothing.This is the 2nd time that's happened. It's one of my favorite breakfast places. Well....this is what is called a "Happy Accident". I looked in the window and it was packed, so i went in. You order from the counter, pay ,sit and they deliver it to you. It was'nt quick service, waited about 20min.....but it was a pleasant surprise. Scrambled eggs(silky w/cheese added), home fries(not crispy and not cooked enuff, but fresh), sausage gravy(not hot enuff, but good flavor) and a bisquit, split in 2. Good bisquit, but this is also a bakery, so that should be a given. Overall good meal. Next time i'll ask for crispy and welldone potatoes and for my gravy to be hotter. At $10.49+tx, it was well worth it. I'm glad Mama's was closed.

the owner thinks that she is all that to be rude to runners... charging water, limit only 1 cup of coffee to customers.. her food are good but not that great.. she got the nervous to refuse our service after a run since one person in our group smell bad one day. boycott the place
(1)KimAnh P.
Cute local breakfast/lunch spot & bakery. We're usually there for brunch on Sunday. Never to gets too crowded. Love the bright, sunflower mural. Price: Slightly steep Quality: Mediocre Portion: Huge Cleaniliness: Average, maybe b/c the place is a bit old Selection: Plenty of breakfast & lunch varieties & mMmm dessert/ cold pastas. Worth a visit :)

Wow, I am so surprised with this place! It's literally less than 100 meters from where I live and I pass it every single day. And every single time I've passed it, I've always cringed. It's exterior just screams middle-age crafting mom (no offense to all you cool middle-aged crafting mamas out there!) It's just someplace that I would never step foot in... Or so I thought. During a productive "work from home" day on New Year's Eve, I wanted to get some lunch. I foolishly headed to Evening Star, hoping to get some Chicken & Waffles. I should've known that practically everything along Mt. Vernon would be closed... As a last resort, I went into Mancini's hoping that I could at least get a cup of coffee there. I went in and the decor was similar to its exterior, but not nearly as bad. It wasn't super crowded, and there was plenty of seating. There was no line, so I got to stare at the menu board for as long as I wanted. (Which ended up being almost 15 minutes.) I ended up getting the Brooklyn-something-or-another which was basically a roll featuring eggplant and a bunch of veggies with the salad of the day (ended up being potato salad unfortunately) and a coffee. It came out to about $9. They have a bin of mugs at the front that you can grab (all the mugs are different so choose the one that best suits your personality!) and there are 3 towers of coffee in the back. All three are different blends, and because the refills are bottomless (as long as you're in the store) you can try the different blends they have. Since I've only been once, I'm not sure if they switch out the blends, but I'd be okay if they didn't because they were all so delicious! I took a seat near the magazine rack and my food was delivered quickly. It took less than 10 minutes for me to get everything. I guess since it was almost empty, my order was the only one in queue. It didn't look like much (in fact, it didn't look like what I was expecting at all--I thought I was getting fried eggplant slices but it was grilled) and I was bracing myself for disappointment. After my first bite, though, I was so surprised at how flavorful it was! The potato salad had bell peppers in it (something I had never tried before) and I liked that a lot also. My only (minor) gripe is that my sandwich was pretty room temperature (despite my veggies supposedly coming right off the grill) but it was still a great sandwich. I judged this place by its exterior and I don't think I've ever been more wrong. I thought it was going to be expensive but pretty to look at food with a fake taste, but I was very wrong! I'm sorry Mancini's for being so quick to judge... To make it up to you, I promise I'll be back often. :)

I've been to Mancini's Cafe 3 times now.. every time I keep telling myself it's going to be the last (darn you convenient location) All three times I've been to this cafe, I felt like an inconvenience to the staff. The menu is less than desirable, and the price is absurd for what you get. I paid almost $4 dollars for mediocre coffee. The place has so much potential with its location, ample seating, and beautiful open windows.
(2)Brooke L.
Bad attitude service, bad quality food. The waffle is dry and tasteless, chicken tenders are dry as well. The breading just fell off. I feel McD has better food. We will not be here again. The only upside is the space.
(2)Ramin D.
I'm one of those who have been here on and off for more than 10 years now. While I admit it used to be a bit better overall in the past (maybe just over 3.5 stars), it is still a pretty decent hybrid of a deli and a pastry shop, with certain aspects of it deserving close to 5 stars (bright spacious dining area, high quality deli meats, and many great breakfast offerings, particularly the pancakes and the tea breads) and other aspects meriting 1 star at best (the horrid coffee that is worst than McD's leading the charge). So then, to go or not to go? That depends entirely on your interpretation of their service. As one reviewer accurately stated, the owner and frequent sever (Barbara) is Del Ray's version of the Soup Nazi. Yes, she is one bad-tempered Italian mama and can be very off-putting at times, but then again, some might view this as a bizarre form of "kitschy" charm. Just look at the numerous (and seemingly purposeful) nasty notes she has posted all over the place vying for your attention. Examples--no free water or ice, no coffee/drink refills, no requests for altering items ordered, no strollers, no cell phones (which I actually sorta like), no this, no that, and so on and so forth. Is this atrocious customer service or is it entertainment? You decide.
(3)MK W.
She is the breakfast nazi of Alexandria. You and your children have to behave or else! The food is good to average. I like the Swing coffee there. I wish they would cook their breakfast potatoes more or cut them into smaller chunks as they are often under-cooked.
(3)Craig D.
Wow. this place lacks focus. The majority of the pastries are beautiful and at least 1/3rd have great flavor and texture. Looks like a garage sale of every pastry or treat one may eat. Not to mention high prices. Breakfast ($$$$) not impressive, you would think they would at least make the effort to make home made corn beef hash. Or not deep fry the hash browns then slam them into a grill to feign home made standards. Two days of omlets and other items. Try. McDonald's for better quality and better prices! Lunch: $$$$. Great ideas and nice flavors on some however too many choices and not enough focus and poor consistent food products. This place was once a gem on Eisenhower Ave. Then moved to Del Rey. Now it's simply over priced and poor quality. True shame!

Top notch cannoli. I'm a baked good snob. I grew up in New York surrounded by delicious Italian bakeries. Since moving to DC the closest thing I've found to a bakery is a cupcakery. Not the same. Last weekend I spotted Mancini's. It looked traditional, old school, and delish. So I vowed to return. I stopped in today with my mind set on a cannoli. Lo and behold THEY HAD THEM! I've been disappointed by cannolis in the past but this did not disappoint! It was the real deal! The cream was perfect. The shell was light and crunchy. You heard me, at 8 tonight when I had it for dessert it was CRUNCHY. I was tempted to try some other treats like the fruit tart or raspberry coconut bar. I did try a bite of banana bread they had samples of and it was some of the best banana bread I've ever had.
(5)George C.
Good food, at somewhat high prices. A pleasant interior and lots of free parking. Often they get the orders wrong there, because lots of the staff members don't speak English fluently. We got used to this, and just ate whatever they brought out of the kitchen. It was easier than verbally wrestling with the staff and sending the orders back repeatedly. Then, one day, we did this, and one of the staff fussed about it, because we'd consumed meals belonging to another table. The meals were similar to our order, so we just went with it, as we did customarily. And got fussed at anyway. So...you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't. Overall, we'd still recommend this restaurant; the pluses are more numerous than the minuses. Just go in cognizant of the reality of things.
(3)Jack H.
Wraps at too salty, almost like it's catering to people with no tastebuds. Clean, strange coffee delivery, expensive...
(2)terry r.
I really want to like Mancini's. The bright sunflower mural makes me happy but... I stopped in on my way to work around 1130, I ordered a chocolate chip cookie and a tuna wrap to go. The cookie was hard as a rock. The tuna wrap was generally awful - half the wrap was hard and dry, the other half was wet & slimy from the tuna fish. The ribs of the romaine lettuce in the wrap were brown, clearly old. All too expensive at $10.

This is the second time around I've been to this café and I could easily become a regular. This part of Va., (Del Ray/Mount.Vernon)) I really like the variety of shops, more cafe's and specialty shops along the avenue. There's a cozy/chic vibe about this café and I like the display of pastries, quiches, sandwiches, and other food and juice drinks. Coming again, I got the buckwheat pancakes with real blueberries and not the glazed stuff, scrambled eggs as I requested, and turkey sausage links. I had green tea in one of those porcelain white mugs you see in those diners on the highway. I enjoyed everything and then the waist of my pants were getting tighter and my beau had to finish it off, which all six-five of him had no problem. Btw, service was good and both dishes came looking good. I know I'll be coming back to this café with the cozy and chic vibe, and definitely good food. So I truly owe it to myself to try something different the next time I return.
(4)Gloria S.
Love the many choices, including Gluten Free. Cute sit in small dinning area, healthy choices and yummy various baked goods as well as full breakfast offered. Prices are kinda high for location and quantity. Staff could be a little more friendly.
(3)NE H.
The food is very mediocre at best. The service is quite lacking. They make their espresso using a prepackaged pouch of coffee, not freshly ground.
(2)Robert M.
Pretty bland eggs Benedict. They put a raw tomato on the muffin which I didn't like. Took a long time to get food and was not worth the wait. The place is like a bakery that happens to be a cafe restaurant.
(2)Aimee S.
My fiancée and I have been here for breakfast several times now- (whenever we get my oil changed up the road). It is much better than fireflies (across the street) taste wise. Tons of sandwich is pastry options. I had turkey, egg whites & cheese on sourdough. He got bacon, tomato & cream cheese on an everything bagel. Both crazy delicious. Coffee is actually kind of gross flavored. We also got the most amazing cranberry orange muffin. Super relaxing location, lots of sun and fresh air space. :) overall fantastic breakfast place- just a little expensive. Twenty something bucks for two peoples breakfast.
(4)Elizabeth H.
Although, I do not live in Del Ray; I frequent this place on a semi regular basis. (I get my car serviced down the street.) This place is very clean. The decor (i.e. yellow walls and the checker patterned floors) are very welcoming. They have a fairly extensive menu for breakfast and lunch. I have never had a problem with my order and/or the service. The restaurant has ample sitting which they let you sit at as long as you need. However, their food is not worth its cost. On my recent visit, I was very disappointed that my eggplant was not cooked to semi raw. In other, words there are better places to eat on Mt Vernon Avenue (but for its convenience its acceptable).
(2)Travis W.
So I was thinking 3 stars initially but the fact that the menu items are pretty creative I decided to go the 4 star route. The meal I had was the kitchen sink omelet and it was really good but I'm a believer that an omelet is hard to really screw up. I was amazed at all the baked goods. Be careful! You can really let you eyes over do it and order a lot of goodies here!
(4)J R.
First time here this morning. Pancakes: delicious. Scrambled eggs and bacon: a little greasy, but this a diner, after all. Coffee: great! Price: OMG! 17 dollars for 3 pancakes, 2 pieces of bacon and 2 scrambled eggs. At first I thought she said 7 dollars and handed her a ten dollar bill. Oops. Probably won't be back.
(3)India T.
The server was extremely rude and the brownie was terrible!
(1)Geoff O.
Eh, it's fine, but it's really not that great. For the lack of variety and quality, the food is overpriced (though I recognize this is Del Ray we are talking about). I'm disappointed. I'd heard rave reviews about Mancini's breakfasts and brunches, but this was merely OK.
(3)Drew S.
I've been in here a couple times now (once for coffee and also for breakfast). The coffee is hot, not bitter, yet strong (all good things). I went with a standard breakfast of eggs, toast, potatoes and bacon, while my dining companion had the french toast. Both of us were pleased with the meal in the cozy environment. I appreciate the variety of coffee cups you can use if you stay to eat (as well as the refills). I've heard their lunch isn't too bad either, so I'll have to head back in at some point.
(4)Amy G.
Still getting serious attitude from the woman that takes orders. Why does she insist on you naming the sandwich when there is a numbering system?! On my to do list for 2014-find a friendlier & cleaner deli.
(1)Brooke J.
Let's face it, Hollywood could shoot a horror flick in their car park. New parents are constantly crossing in front of traffic with SUV strollers. You may or may not have enough room to reverse your car or open your doors. That's if you don't lose a rim to one of their potholes. Once you get in the door, you're assaulted by the array of choices. Usually one is cautioned against having too large a menu since you're like not to do it all well. Mancini's does a pretty good job on pretty much everything, but it should really weed out a number of average options. As others have pointed out, service is less than stellar. They almost always seem cold, and there was a period of time when we were regular customers. I can't complain about wait times, though. We're almost always in and out of there in short order. My most recent visit was yesterday for breakfast. I had a western omelette, a fruit cup, and a diet raspberry Snapple. Listen up Alexandria, keep ordering that flavour of Snapple, it's integral to mah breakfast! This time the fruit cup was a little older than it usually is, but 9 times out of 10 this is the best fruit cup anywhere in the capital region. There's plenty of pineapple in there. You won't find rindy melon. Whatever they put into it tends to be fresh. Right now it's strawberries, blueberries, honeydew, cantaloupe, and pineapple. Someone back there knows how to pick ripe pineapples, and I salute them. I'm not going to lie. Each and every time I've had an omelette here, it's been swimming in oil. It's a serious disappointment, just like the slimy oily way the cheese tends to turn out in their quesadillas. The vegetables in the omelettes are as fresh as the fruit in their fruit cups, though. The hasbrowns are always hit or miss. This weekend they were definitely miss. The chop was no where near uniform, so some pieces were cooked and others were nearly raw. They were uniformly too greasy, though. For talented bakers, the toast should shine. It just doesn't. On top of that, the jelly and jam selection consisted of grape, grape, or grape. Other pastries have been tasty in the past, though. I think my biggest sticking point with Mancini's is their pricing. Costs are way out of line with what's on offer, and that's not in the customer's favour. This is usually one of the hallmarks of a struggling restaurant. I don't think Mancini's is struggling now, but if they keep charging the same way above average prices for the average food they're sending out, I expect they will be in future. The portions are quite large, though, so this does offset the expense slightly.
(3)Michael F.
Great food. Great coffee. It's a laid back environment. Haven't been for dinner yet but apparently they have a Pasta Wednesday night. Lots of baked goods but have tried those either. I typically got for the omlette.
(4)Ana B.
I hate going here but I just can't stop. The service is insanely slow. But the cinnamon rolls are delicious. The majority of clients are incredibly annoying pretentious new parents, but the decor creates a true neighborhood feel. Overall the food is ok, just don't come here if you're in a rush. Despite my grumblings, I bet ill be back next week since its the only place to get a real breakfast for a reasonable price in Del Ray.
(2)Q.Q. A.
I love the food at Mancini's, however today I'm finding that the service is slow and the dining area is grimy (food on the floor, crumbs and debris on the tables, etc.) I'll be back but I hope they clean up a little.
(3)Nia P.
I have passed this bakery many times and always said one day I would try it. There always seem to be a crowd of people there so that must mean something right? Well, my sister came from out of town to see my son play football, and we decided to stop here since it was right down the street from his game. The parking lot is so tiny, only a few cars can fit but I am used to this. I parked in a spot not realizing that I would block others from getting out, that was my fault I agree. We went in and looked at the menu which looked very promising. Before we started to order, a lady came in asking if there was someone driving a car that sounded just like my car, and when she confirmed it was me, I immediately went outside to move it because I do not like causing problems for others. Before I could even get outside, I don't know if it was the owner or just an angry employee, that commented in front of everyone, that if I can't find an adequate space then I shouldn't have come, and "don't get her mad!". I just told my sister let's go because I thought that was completely unprofessional of her. This is my very first Yelp post and I usually just chalk it up to bad customer service. But if this is how employees speak to potential customers, that does not look good for the business owner. I take responsibility for my part in this, but that response was uncalled for and I will never recommend this place to anyone, even if the food is good.
(1)Bill T.
Food is generally above average. The baked goods and muffins are well done but a bit pricey. The real downside of Mancini's is the owner who often works the register. She has the personality of a prison guard. All I can figure out is that her business must be extremely good; this would be the only explanantion of her demeanor towards her staff and, more importantly, the paying customers. Caboose, further north on Mt. Vernon Ave., is a good alternative.
(3)Andie C.
Great for breakfast on the weekends. Lots of options to pick from- more than the normal egg options.
(4)Robert P.
A great Sunday breakfast. Nicely breaded/fried boneless chicken with a sausage/gravy topping, scrambled eggs with cheese, potatoes and a great englishmuffiny type bread. You won't leave hungry. First time eating there. A little confusing about the ordering process. I stood there for a few minutes and nobody acknowledged me. Did not know if I should just take a seat. I had to go to the cashier to find out the process. Not a smile in the house. Kind of odd. I guess if you are just there for the paycheck...... Very few people are really cut out for retail. I would suspect if I were a retail owner and a job applicant never smiled during an interview, I would thank them for their time and show them the door. I might go back or I might not.
(3)Kate P.
The atmosphere is so cute, and I love having a cute bakery down on our end of the ave--so much of the best stuff is concentrated up further north. Not all their baked goods are actually so much "good," but I do like their cookies. The cupcake happy hour ($2.99 for a cupcake and glass of milk in the afternoons) is a fun idea. The interior is bright and beautiful and makes a nice atmosphere. Support Mancini's!
(4)David V.
So when it comes down to breakfast food, this is the place. I know the staff is not friendly and they will probably never smile at anyone. But, this place is better than most when it comes to its food. This place uses good ingredients which is why this is not a cheap place either. And yes, I am one of the loyal fans of this place. But I am not the only one. Any weekend morning, this place is packed. So come enjoy the food, drink a little bit of the coffee (not the best, though I am a huge fan of me swings) and smile.
(5)Emi O.
Stopped in for breakfast while my car was being serviced, on the recommendations of the dealer's receptionist. It's a run-of-the-mill place at the far eastern end of Del Rey. Ordered the eggs benedict, which the menu stated was to be served with fresh fruit, toast and breakfast potatoes (their version of hash browns). Told them to skip the potatoes and got a soy latte. Found a table and waited for the order. The soy latte was the worst -- flavorless, even Starbucks is better. Fifteen minutes later my order was served -- lukewarm small litte eggs with a bit of ham and tomato pieces sitting on english muffins with a bit of hollandaise sauce. The fresh fruit consisted of maybe 5 little pieces of melon and pineapple served in what looked like a hospital pill cup. No toast. This on top of mis-matched flatware and an assortment of leftover knives -- all for the bargain price of $15. If you like mediocre overpriced food, this is the place for you!
(2)Christine N.
This is just an average place where you can get breakfast early in the morning, probably one of the closest places to eat breakfast from the metro station, or whatever Washingtonians call it. We had to leave for the airport early in the morning and this was one of our only options. I ordered a platter with eggs, bread, sausages, and potatoes. They were like any other typical breakfast place such as Dennys except with less choices. I'm struggling to write this review because it's not horrible and it's not amazing, maybe I'll just copy and paste A-ok over and over to fill up the paragraph. They do serve huge mugs of coffee and this seems like your go-to breakfast place every weekend to read the newspaper, play chess with friends, etc. Anyway, it's just a place to fill up your stomach if you are hungry in the morning because nothing around is open before like 9-10 am.
(3)Rick G.
Quaint little place worth visiting! Nice not-so-little place to drop in for drinkable coffee, outstanding baked goods, and some pretty good deli style sandwiches. After walking down the Del Ray neighborhood we thoroughly enjoyed our stop in and recommend it - great variety!
(3)Jeffery W.
I've been here a couple of times...the food is good, and the ambiance is fine.
(3)Juanita M.
$13 for scrambled eggs, toast, 'fruit', coffee and a scone. Not really worth it. Slow ordering process, but food came quick after ordering. The place could also probably use a major spring cleaning, little grimy in some parts. But overall, Meh.
(2)Brian H.
Very good all around. I like how the specials change often. I have ate here for breakfast and lunch many times. People complain about prices, but the portions match what you pay. Coffee is great (they get it from ME Swing Co.). Pastries and sides (pasta salads) also very good. Weekends are pretty busy with families. If you want less children running around, go during the week or an off-hour during the weekend.
(4)christine c.
Wow. Maybe I'm spoiled living in a city that prides itself on having lots of restaurants, especially brunch places that strive to be the "best". This place was beyond underwhelming. it was indigestion and then some. The food is slop, the woman behind the counter taking the orders is who the soup nazi is modeled after (no f'in substitutions, ok??!), the coffee tastes burnt; well I could go on and on but i'll spare you. I ordered the pancakes- they were rubbery and served with crappy pancake syrup (no maple). To leave you with something positive, perhaps the coffee cake was decent. But it doesnt make up for the rest.
(1)Ian C.
This has become my girlfriend and I's go-to place for breakfast on the weekends. The food has always been at least decent and they have some weekly specials that make it interesting. We typically get pancakes, french toast, omelets, and scrambles. My only gripes with the place are that they've made a few minor mistakes on the order over the years, the coffee isn't that great, and there is always a bunch of babies (must be a few baby-friendly reviews here on Yelp, haha). We've made a habit out of getting coffee at Elmos down the street and then getting breakfast here, and they haven't minded so far. It is a little on the pricey side, but if you only eat out a couple times a week like I do it's worthwhile.
(4)Megan M.
Decent breakfast but not great. Their cookies are good though
(3)Jasen F.
I might go back. My iced latte was good, but given how hot it was on Saturday afternoon I may have enjoyed anything with ice in my cup. What I didn't enjoy was the cleanliness of the place. It had a smell, in the direction of the restrooms, of an older establishment that has been taken advantage of by the current ownership. The state of the men's restroom was deplorable...meaning dirty walls, dirty floor and not just that day dirty. It's one of those places that gets worse and worse the further you walk away, especially when you walk in the direction of a restaurant that is well loved and kept. I'd be slightly embarrassed to take friends and family here.

I've been going to Mancini's for several years now, but only sporadically. The sandwiches are decent and the desserts look good but pricey. I would've given it more than 2 stars but the cashier (apparently she's the owner) is so rude and unaccommodating that I refuse to give it more stars. Had the 1/2 wrap (chicken curry) and soup (tomato basil) yesterday and the wrap was underwhelmingly impressive. The wrap tasted ok, but they put so little filling in it that it was mostly wrap (and it taste like the refrigerator). Soup was tasty. What got me so fired up over this place was that I had bought a drink (Diet AZ green tea) which was too much for me to finish during lunch, but I'd poured it out into a cup so I could have it over ice. I asked for a to-go cup and the poor woman looked at me and said ask her and pointed to the cashier. When I asked if I could have one of the cups, she said it's 25¢. I already bought food there and it just annoyed me that she wanted to charge me for it! My husband and I sell coffee at farmers markets and we give out cups even when someone hasn't bought something from us for customer service, and we use the these specialty, bio-degradable cups which cost quite a bit more. I know the cups she uses cost less than 10¢ from Restaurant Depot so it ticked me off! Her food isn't that good that she doesn't have to be nice to people.

Mancini is this cute little spot in Del Ray. The first time I went though, I got screamed by, from what I'm guessing is the owner. Her personality is horrible. HORRIBLE. The staff seem so cold, and they never smile. The only bright spot are the pastries. OH MY GOSH, those apple turnovers are AMAZING! You shouldn't leave without trying one. The price was above average, but it matches the portions. Overall it's better to go to Caboose
(2)Fuzz H.
Got a chicken sandwich and an eggplant panini, both were soggy and the chicken was dry. Tables and floor hadn't been cleaned from the morning patrons (by 1pm). About the only thing saving this place (other than lack of options) is the friendly staff.
(2)Jodi W.
I love this amazing local bakery - they have delicous pastries and amazing breakfast. Also good lunch. It's only a few blocks from where I live, so I'm lucky they're not open for dinner or else I would turn into a giant pastry. I think I've tried just about everything on the menu and haven't missed yet. My recommendation: go for breakfast, check out the weekend specials, and pick up an apple turnover. So yummy - probably the best turnover I've ever had! Only low point - I do not love their coffee. And sometimes there are screaming kiddos around (neighborhood joint, so to be expected).

If you like being treated rudely, or like you are a 5-year-old, then you are going to love this place. Each time I go, the owner makes me feel like she's doing me a favor by operating this business. In addition, every-other-time I go I receive some sort of lecture from her about breaking some sort of arbitrary rule. The food is OK -- but its better at Evening Star and Caboose, which are a stone's throw a way. Not to mention, they actually like having customers. Look elsewhere.

This place has me torn. The food is normally awesome and the prices aren't bad. But the service is consistent - consistent at being rude. And I did get food poisoning once (I had the frenchtoast that time). But as a testament to how good the food was, I came back. The good: Breakfast Sandwiches - awesome Coffee - strong and good Pastries - normally great (but I did have the bread pudding once and it sucked) The bad: The lady who works the register is always really mean, and I don't know why! What did I do? They try to limit your coffee refills (seriously?) They don't take AmEx. I would go more often if it had better service, plain and simple. Go for the food but don't expect the staff to be pleasant...

Great food at great prices. Full breakfast menu, with many unique omlettes and more; full espresso & coffee service; great pastries and baked goods, some fresh fruit offerings too; best of all, friendly service. The location is perfect if you're going shopping in Del Ray, or stopping at the Audi dealer. Similar to the Royal, but better on a weekday. They don't have wi-fi, but someone nearby did and it worked for me.

absolutely delicious roast beef sandwich, anti pasta salad was delicious as well!

I've been here before, and it has been mediocre. Today was far below mediocre! I am usually the world's easiest person to please at any restaurant. But today was just a waste of time and money. I actually left most of the food, even knowing that I will be hungry until dinner time. They also nickel-and-dime little things, like charging for a to-go cup for my tea. I was planning to try a couple of favors of tea, but when I could finally figure out what the man was saying, I realized I was being told to put one of the tea bags back. If he had just told me in Spanish I could have understood right away. I always try to patronize small business, but today I went away resolved to find a Starbucks.
(1)K K.
The food is ok, but there is a woman behind the counter that terrorizes the customers and other employees. I have encountered rude service in DC, but this woman is beyond the pail even for Beltway standards. She was just looking for an excuse to yell at everyone around her including several customers.
(1)Lyd K.
Two of us went on a Saturday morning around 11 AM - we will go again and both recommend it. It is the kind of place where you walk up and order at the counter and they bring your order to the table. Upsides: We didn't have a problem finding seating and there was space available in the parking lot. The blueberry buckwheat pancakes were the best I have had in 10 years - fluffy, flavorful, and tender. Mancini's knows how to make pancakes! I had the eggs Benedict and it was very tasty - above average without a doubt. Illy coffee was perfect. The people working the counter were very friendly. Downsides: Silverware was not very clean - okay that is an understatement.

When I first walked through the doors into Mancini's Cafe I first was taken aback by the line which stretched along the food cases almost to where you enter. I wondered what was so great about this place to wait in this line? Well, I am glad I did - as my wife and I have found one of our most favorite local breakfast spots. First, the pastries. OH the PASTRIES! I am a pastry addict... and they make and serve some of THE BEST apple turnovers I have ever had! They are worth driving there for, if you don't live within walking distance as I do. Wow, I want to go get me one right now.... The other baked goodies range from bread, to muffins and cupcakes and fancy cakes. I have not tried them all ... yet ... One day my wife and I decided to be daring and actually sit down and order from one of their mouth watering brunch options. I must say the quality of the food is great. Tasty! Fresh! I also like that they serve you coffee in actual mugs which they wash and reuse. One of the negatives, in my opinion, is the setup of the cafe. It apparently begs for people to stand JUST inside the door -- line or no line. I don't understand this as it is clearly the only way in or out, why do people feel the need to congregate there? I have no idea -- but maybe I'll ask next time I encounter it... The other minus (for me) is the number of families with small children. The cafe makes it clear that children should be watched after an large strollers should not be brought into the store, but it is not very well enforced -- not that I can blame them who wants to be mean to paying customers? Regardless, for me it is a minus --although you might see it as a plus! All in all this is now a regular stop for us on weekends, and the occasional weekday off or working from home! I do think everyone should try it -- for pastries or food or baked goods -- at least once!

I brought some friends with me, and warned them based on my prior experience with the owner. Generally her employees are fine, but gosh what a joykill she is...I wish she would read the reviews here. When we ordered, we told her employee we were going to be sitting outside (dog in tow) and the employee made a note on the ticket. After a normal wait, the food comes out by none other than Mrs. Happysworth herself. She proceeds to give us a lecture about how they're short staffed and we have to wait inside to get the food (nevermind the AC is out of order) next time. The food was fine, but between her and all the little signs telling you what to do, next I might just make breakfast myself. And yes, the water is $.25 but supposedly that goes to charity.
(3)Peggie A.
The best part of Mancini's is the baked goods. My second favorite thing is the breakfast. The staff can be surly or simply exhausted but it sort of reminds me of home (just outside NYC). frankly, so do the sandwiches and breakfasts. We always find something to please everyone in our group - which is hard to do with this neighborhood and my picky eaters. I find the lunch a bit pricey for what you get so I do try to avoid it unless I'm too tired to walk any further than my office around the corner. Overall a good solid mainstay for homey (or new-yorky?) food.
(3)Alfredo B.
Good food for breakfast. Relaxed atmosphere. Decent price.

I've been in here twice, and unfortunately, there's not much good I can say about the place. The first time it was just under okay, the second time it was terrible. It's overpriced, they nickel and dime you on everything from the water ($.25 for a water glass to then fill with tap water) to the tea ($1.95 for a regular Lipton Tea bag), and on my second dining experience, the only thing that wasn't awful were the eggs. The tables and chairs are in need of a good cleaning, and the toilet spouts water all over the floor (and I'm pretty sure it's not a bidet.) Speaking of those water glasses...a customer knocked them over onto the floor, and the staff just picked them back up and set them on the table--no dishwasher. Hmm. The woman at the counter needed a serious attitude adjustment when we arrived on Sunday morning; everything seemed to be a chore for her. We were the first customers of the day, and I kind of thought that meant they would have some time to get things right. Both of the dishes ordered--the pecan caramel french toast and the buckwheat blueberry pancakes came out very burnt. There was so little blueberry compote on the pancakes that I had to ask for regular syrup to kill the burned taste, and was directed to a squeeze bottle of unmarked brown goo. The turkey sausage links were okay, they were clearly just the microwave Jennie-O kind, so they were probably hard to screw up. I spent over $25 for the privilege of those two breakfasts, and we felt like we would have been better served at IHOP.
(1)Daniel S.
It's a relly good place for lunch. The food is great and it's close to work, so those are pluses. Two things I would improve: Price - It's a little pricey for a lunch sandwich place Speed - It takes a bit too long, again for a luch sandwich place. I find myself going a bit out of the way to Jimmy Johns because of those two things.
(3)Kimberly H.
Okay - this place wins hands down for breakfast around here. Why? It is a TRUE breakfast which is so hard to find in the area. We had some great egg dishes - eggs loraine with bacon, swiss and carmelized onions and an omelett with goat cheese, leek and FIG for goodness sake! We LOVE that type of yummy breakfast innovation. You do have to stand in line to order and they bring your food to you. No big deal. The staff has been very nice when we have been there. The coffee is excellent and we have tried the pastries which are quite tasty as well. Go here if you are a transplant like we are and miss BREAKFAST!
(4)Kitty W.
The vibe on weekend mornings is calm and cheerful. The coffee is great, the menu has many breakfast options, and the food is consistently good. This is a great choice for small groups, parents with small children, and single people who want to sit in the sun and read the paper over breakfast. When the weather's nice, the chairs outside are occupied by watchers of life on the Avenue. It's one of Del Ray's lesser known gems.
(4)Michelle L.
We stopped to get an oil change and stumbled upon this place by chance. It is a cute bakery/cafe with a full coffee menu, selection of cupcakes and other desserts, soups, salad, made-to-order sandwiches, and some ready-to-go options. We opted for some sandwiches- the Bada Bing- their version of a chicken parm, and Margarita- basically a caprese. Both were very good and fresh, and were served with chips and a pickle. It is deli style ordering but they do bring your food to you when it's ready. The service was a little slow- there was only one other table there, and we waited about 20 minutes for the food to come out. Overall, the food really hit the spot and we're talking about going back to sample some of those deserts!
(4)Jennifer L.
It is one of the places my friend and I go for a good, solid brunch after church on Sundays. We do get there early- 9ish- so it's not SUPER crowded. The food is decent, though the fruit cup is just honeydew and cantelope- if you are lucky, a few grapes. I do love their unlimited coffee which is self serve- the Latino and African blend (Medros?) is the best. Smooth, you can drink it black and not gag. I love the breakfast specials- though most of them are pretty heart stopping (french toast with bananas and caramel?) there are some healthy options (veggie omlette, salmon something or other). A good solid brunch. Decent prices, a good value.
(4)Christopher K.
Service can be a bit rough, but they have some very solid sandwiches and baked good here. I find the décor enjoyable (love the black and white checkerboard) and sunny. They also have a few outdoor tables, which is great when I come by with the dog.
(4)Ice L.
Prices are high, and staff are not friendly, especially the one at the cash register, the lady with short haircut, I always order the same breakfast sandwich and a small coffee, she doesn't take my order properly (this happened twice, I had to tell her that I ordered a different one, and waited for 15 min to get the new order), and the price of the bill changes every time??? How can the price of the same sandwich + small coffee change every time I order? Do they think people are not observing? I am never taking my business to this place again... I am very disappointed.
(1)Caroline V.
Been here a few times but only had coffee and a few pastries. I have no complaints on either front and felt satisfied for the few bucks spent. Good? Yes. Blow your brains out amazing? Ehhhh...
(3)George M.
Another reviewer compared the owner to the "Soup Nazi" - the thing is, the premise of the Soup Nazi was that the soup is so good, you have to tolerate being abused. I'm going to have to echo another review in mine: the food here isn't that good. The breakfast omelets are hearty and fresh, salads are better than McDonald's, and I hear/see that the sandwiches and pastries are good (not a gluten eater so only an observer here), but because of the service, house "rules" and nickel and diming, we only go in a pinch and when another preferred place in Del Ray is full. I do however secretly appreciate a place in Del Ray that dares to take a hard line against unruly children and bulky baby strollers.
(2)Caitrin S.
Went here for lunch on a Sunday. It was pretty busy inside but not jam packed. We waited in line to pay for over 15 minutes. The person working the cash register was SO SLOW. It seemed every customer took 5 minutes just at the register. She was not a native-English speaker and very hard to understand. She also did not know much about the menu and couldn't answer simple questions like "does anything come on the side of the panini?" I was also very disappointed with the atmosphere. It was cluttery, and there were a lot of cliche type of signs on the wall - "Life's short, eat cookies," for example. Just way cheesier than I would expect for Del Rey. The baked goods had signs identifying the item, but they were sloppily hand-written. VERY unprofessional. (I used to work in a bakery and it was a BIG "no-no" to write a sign instead of printing it off the computer. If the printer was down for some reason we made sure only the person with the most impeccable handwriting did the signs.) The coffee mugs also seemed to be dirty. I saw several other customers pick them up, look inside and put them back disgusted. My boyfriend and I both got paninis which were not bad. The pasta salad on the side was also pretty good. Standard, but it didn't blow my mind. Though, I usually don't expect a sandwich to be life-changing. Bottom line - go to Caboose or Buzz instead. I am tempted to give 2 stars because the service and the atmosphere is way below par, but the food was pretty good so I gave 3.
(3)John H.
Like the breakfast, nice selection which changes frequently. I just have one bone to pick, why doesn't the guy who delivers the plates to the customers just set the plate on your table? Instead, he stands there next to your table holding the plate out to make you take it directly from his hands!!! It's very weird, risks a dropped plate due to a poor exchange and makes no sense whatsoever!! Just very poor customer service.
(3)Nate R.
This place overthinks its dishes and ends up serving sloppy, gluttonous mounds of breakfast fair. Seriously, finishing some of their dishes might set you back 2,000 calories. Despite mediocre food and no table service, they charge like a 3-star bistro. Be prepared to spend nearly $30 for a breakfast for two. Heck, they charge you to use a glass and fill it with tap water. In the end, its an unnecessary splurge for your waistline and your wallet.

Usually when I go to Mancini's,it's only bc I'm tired of other places or maybe want a sandwich. I was so glad when it opened year's ago,but still, today, find the people there rude and indifferent. No one ever smiles and they act like you are doing them a favor to be there. Speed of table service usually is about when you are wondering how long it takes to make French toast. I was also disappointed in their cupcakes, bec they are chilled and instructions are to let it sit at room temperature for 1/2 hr..and then it was hardly worth the wait. But it's a casual place with outdoor seating and usually a free paper is somewhere. And speaking of French toast,it was ok..a little too mushy inside and requiring more syrup to make it go down. And I have no beefs with this place personally. In fact, as a fellow dachshund lover (the owner has doxies), I would love nothing more than to give it thumbs up. Instead , I usually go t the Caboose or even IHOP .
(3)Jeff H.
The food is overpriced - especially for breakfast. $9.00 on a Thursday for two eggs, two slices of bacon, and potatoes. The service was also poor - except that they treated the regulars well. I'm not a regular so the service was lousy. I won't return.
(2)Dorothy M.
Here's the thing. The owner (Barbara) is actually a value add for me to go to Mancini's. I have been going for at least 8 years now and I have seen her evolve a bit but I really appreciate her efforts to create such a great spot here in Alexandria. The brunch and its variety are always reliably awesome. But a great day at Mancini's is a day when we are able to observe Barbara in her element - whether its taking a jab at someone who did not place a quarter in the "water cup" jar to donate to a worthy charity - or scolding you for NOT getting hollandaise sauce on your benedict b/c clearly that is the best part!!! - she is Del Ray's kinder and gentler version of Seinfeld's and New York's "Soup Nazi". In a sea of so very many cookie cutter establishments with "vanilla-type" proprietors - Barbara Mancini is a colorful character - and I welcome her into my life at least one time a week when my b/f and I go and have brunch at her Cafe in Del Ray. The thing about Barbara is that she saves the vanilla for her baked goods...nothing about her is common or plain...and I wouldn't have it any other way! Check it out folks!!! :)
(5)Peter M.
Huge and delicious chicken pot pies! This is a local place where we go on a not too often basis, but the food is good even if the wait staff is slow, and the decor is a little old. This homespun restaurant is a good place to stop and get a slide of meatloaf or a stick to the ribs type meal. Bottom Line: Lunch is a best bet, and try the chicken pot pie.
(3)Kristy H.
Y'know, I really want to bump up the review, but I'm not sure I can push it all the way to a 4 just yet. It would get a solid 3.5, though. In recent months I've noticed a change in the owner -- she has been very nice and personable. The food is solid, and though it's expensive for what it is, the breakfast is good. I recently attended a party that was catered by Mancini's, and the food was very tasty. The woman who came to set it up and serve it was friendly and really knew what she was doing. I do have one complaint though. A couple of months ago I went in and ordered a breakfast sandwich. I wanted egg, spinach, and tomato instead of the egg, meat, cheese options that were listed. Instead of subtracting for the items I didn't want (meat and cheese) then adding the cost for the veggies, I was still charged the base price of the egg, meat, cheese, sandwich, then charged for the vegetables on top of that. .My sandwich ended up costing me around 7 dollars -- ridiculous!!
(3)Peter B.
We love this place!!! Fresh food, happy faces and a clean environment. Of all the places on the Avenue this one is the most authentic and really feels like NYC. The owner is the best baker in NOVA and she is as sweet as her desserts. I highly recommend you try something different each time you go and you'll never be dissapointed. And not to mention....they have parking!!! Love it!!!
(5)Michelle B.
Mancini's is convenient. I don't go there for the pastries or prepared foods, nor have I been there since they extended their hours for dinner. For me, it's good for a sandwich on the go or a quick breakfast on Saturday and Sundays when you're not up for brunch or too lazy (or hungover) to cook an egg. I guess I'm not too enthused about it because the people who work there manage to be consistently rude or stand-offish. They also charge for more than one coffee refill which is just evil on a Sunday morning. I know they started out on Eisenhower Avenue in a little trailer and moved into their spot on the Avenue a few years back. Like I said, it's a good standby.. and nothing stands out. I don't think there's much to be done about the icy customer service because I've seen the owner be quite snappy to patrons in line before.
(3)Jane P.
Well the baked goods looked tasty. . . and we wanted to try something new. The boyfriend and I were underwhelmed by the breakfast we had on that lazy fall Sunday morning. His waffle was "fine." My eggs and hash were icky. Yes, I just said icky. The coffee was ok. But seriously, why would I walk that far to Mancini's when I could get a much better breakfast, tastier coffee, and fabulous friendly service at Caboose?
(2)H. G.
LOVE Mancini's and am surprised by the negative reviews. Hands down my favorite breakfast place in Del Ray. Yes, the owner can be a bit brusque, but I cut her a little slack - she's running a small business on what is probably a pretty small profit margin, and after standing in line at other establishments far too many times behind Type A DC idiots who hold up the entire line whilst finishing their uber-important phone conversation before deigning to order, I would rather have a sign or two than the alternative. On to the really important thing - the food, which is uniformly good and reasonably priced, and my eggs are always cooked exactly how I ask for them. Full breakfast with coffee usually runs me about $9-10/pp (the reviewer who estimated $30 for two must throw several baked goods into that calculation - I personally am stuffed after finishing a breakfast plate). I have brought many local and out-of-town friends here, and almost all of them specifically ask to revisit Mancini's ("that cute place with the sunflowers on the wall") the next time they visit me. The earlier you go, the better - late morning on the weekends can get crazy busy. Finally, on the extra charges issue - I routinely refill my coffee mug 3-4 times over the course of a breakfast. I have never, ever been stopped from doing this or told of a "one refill" policy. Since I'm pretty focused on my coffee first thing in the morning I am not as certain on the water issue, but I know friends have gotten water and I don't recall them being charged - I also seem to remember plastic cups on the counter by the coffee/silverware for that purpose the last time I was there.

It's pretty funny to read the reviews of Mancini's. You definitely have to be able to take a little snark with your food to dine here. I only go for weekend brunch, which is pretty delicious. I have been going for about 8 years and not once have I been disappointed. The servings are generous. Two people could share an entree and be full. I really like Mancini's because the brunch menu changes every week. Last Fall, there was a turkey hash that my husband and I can't stop thinking about. Once there was a version of pigs in a blanket (pancakes). My favorite is something called, The Big Mess, which is a pile of chili, eggs, guacamole, etc. on hash browns. They also have more dainty items for those on a budget or watching their waistline. Despite the 'tude and rules, it's really a great atmosphere for chilling with friends and family on a Saturday/Sunday morning. It's very relaxed and informal, and most diners are regulars who know the drill.
(4)Ashley H.
Quaint little place with a nice ambiance. The bakery case gives you something to look at and drool over while waiting to order. Food is tasty but not really healthy. There is minimal seating at tables, but there is counter space available. You order your food and find a seat, and someone from the kitchen comes out, shouts your name, and brings you your plate. There isn't much service, since you grab your own cup/mug, drink, and silverware. Still a nice place to enjoy the street of Mount Vernon Ave. (and watch your car for potential ticketing or towing.)
(3)Gers A.
This is a quick and easy cafe for breakfast/brunch, as they have a decent selections of omelettes and other breakfast items. Regarding coffee, you pick up a mug and go grab refills as you need, so I'm unsure what a previous reviewer meant by them overcharging, unless it was for the dinner crowd. I went for brunch. Also, everyone is saying staff was rude, but when I went they basically left us alone after we ordered food at the counter and grabbed the tray after it was completed. Maybe I missed something.
(3)C R.
Neither the food nor the coffee are worth the visit. The most memorable thing about it is t]he rudeness of the staff--owner included. Oy.
(1)SC O.
A nice lunch spot. They used to have specials on top of their regular menu, which was a nice touch. The staff, overall, is very nice and welcoming. My co-workers and I tend to choose this as a promising and quick spot. We did venture there for dinner but I'd recommend lunch. I've also heard their pastries are great.
(3)Ben T.
Great for brunch, wide variety of sandwich selections and specials!
(5)Stephanie C.
Stopped in for lunch today. I had the Mama sandwich, my better half had a chicken and blue cheese wrap. Including two drinks, we spent a little over $20, which I found expensive considering neither sandwich was anything special. The dining area and the ladies' restroom were dirty, with lots of trash and spills on the floor. Probably won't go back, considering there are better options up the Avenue.
(2)Lindsay S.
had bfast there this saturday. solid food and nice atmosphere. and what's really nice is that it wasn't overly crowded. room to sit and enjoy the food. i had the egg sandwich and my husband had an omelette. both were great and the coffee was good, too (very strong!) also have great homemade cookies!
(4)J B.
There is a lady that works here that looks like will miss everything cool and die angry, but apart from the staff that apparently hates their lives, they make pretty good pastries and cakes. I prefer it to Buzz, actually. Coffee is nothing to write home about.
(4)JT T.
crappy service. underwhelming food for bistro prices. i'd rather go next door where you can get a real sandwich for a fair price and don't come out feeling like i had to pay extra for the "ambience". a restaurant that focuses more on flair (not very successful) rather than substance (fails miserably).
(1)Kristin P.
I love their BLTs. They have a lot of bacon, fried to perfection (crispy in my book).
(3)
