Not at all happy with this place. The food is decent but overpriced and the service was terrible. First off Yelp says this is a $$ price category. It's more of a $$$ as all their steak entree's are all $37. Fish starts at $28 and appetizers are $12-15. Sandwiches and hamburgers are around $13-17 The atmosphere is definitely "make a reservation" and dress nice. At first thinking this is a walk in $$ category, I figured casual would be ok. But once we were greeted with, "do you have a reservation" and seen the environment, I felt a bit out of place. I advised that we were new. The hostess advised no booths were avaible, because we did not make a reservation. Then asked if we have ever dined with them before, (she obviously dismissed my original statement) then recited a brief history about the restaurant. It felt very recited and memorized. Our server (Michelle) never checked on us. We had to always ask the hostess for service. We ordered our main dish to be split however they just brought us a second plate instead of splitting our meal. The sword fish I suspect was a bit undercooked but decent. They got our side wrong but our server was in the back gabbing again for an extended amount of time, and again we snagged the hostess to do our servers job. Recommendation: Save your money and try a different $$ category restaurant or go to Market Street Grill.

I went to Shula's with a co-worker for lunch. I had the short rib sandwich she had the steak sandwich. Both sandwiches were good, mine came with fries which were ok and she got the side salad with what she thought to be an exceptional blue cheese dressing. She asked the waiter about the dressing and he told her it was homemade and gave her the recipe, very cool. Service on our visit was very good, almost too good, the hostess, waiter and manager were a bit over the top. I hear some of my co-workers have been back since and have had very questionable service. I am going with 4 stars based on my experience, sounds like I need to try them again to make sure it was as good as I remember.

I would recommend Shula's. It's next to the Embassy Suites. I had a very good filet, roasted zucchini and sweat potato fries. Very friendly and attentive staff.

Seems like this place is struggling a little. They all but begged us to come back on the weekend. Food was pretty good, but pricey for lunch.

Restaurant was empty on a Friday night but we were stating at hotel and did not want to leave again. Food was OK except for the cheese puffs which were served cold and hard? Probably my expectations were too high but I had warm and fluffy in mind when I think of a Puff. Had a steak - it was OK not great or fabulous or worth $37 Anyhow I would go back due To convenience but would stick to burger and fries or salad.

Have gone to Shulas in other cities before and had very nice experiences so was looking forward to a nice meal. Arrived and they asked for my name so that the server could greet me by name. That was fine. Ordered martini but it came less than half fill and was definitely not an oversized glass so felt a little shorted. Ordered filet mignon medium rare and it came pretty medium. Understand that there are different takes on medium rare but knew this was too well done for me so asked that it be sent back. I don't ever send food back but when you're paying good money at nice restaurant, do want it done right. And this leads to perhaps my biggest gripe. While it was great that they took it back, they brought a new one back cooked the EXACT SAME WAY. If my take of medium rare is different than theirs, then at least look at the steak I sent back and make adjustments. They didn't. When eating the steak, found it to be dry and not a very good grade, so was very disappointed. I was starving and ate most except for some of the edges that I found to be too dry. To their credit, the manager asked how things were and I was honest and they took 1/2 off of the steak. Hope it was just a bad day in kitchen, loved other Shulas but am now having some doubts based upon this experience.

Came in on a Friday - surprisingly quiet. The best part about the experience was our server. She was attentive and professional. The salads, steaks, and sides were all great. Only downfall was waiting nearly 30 min for our steaks after our salads were clear. Other than that, everything was excellent!

Poor poor customer service. Staying at the hotel and they gave me a coupon for a free small plate. I tried to sub for a wedge (same price as one small plate) and answer was no. So I left. Was gonna spend 50 w coupon. Guess they don't want the business.

We finally made it to Shula's. We've been waiting for a special occasion since it's a bit more pricey than most places for our Friday date night. The good: The food was terrific. I had the braised short rib. It was meltingly fork tender. Definitely no need for the steak knife. Craig's steak was well cooked, but slightly less than medium once he got to the very middle. His veggies and smashed red potatoes were also quite good. I also really enjoyed the cheese puffs. They were like cheesy biscuits only less crumbly. Nice and tender but not flaky like rolls. The mediocre: I thought the roasted veggies were slightly undercooked, but maybe that's my preference. Although our server was wonderful in so many ways, she overlooked our drinks until we were nearly done. Looking over the menu I thought that the sides were overpriced; there's no way I'd pay $7 for a side. But then again, maybe that's okay if you consider them an addition to just the small plates. Will we be back? Absolutely. It's a great steak house and I think it's a nice addition to the WVC dining scene.

I found this classy grill & steakhouse through Groupon in the summer of 2014. I was surprised to find this restaurant in a newly renovated Embassy suites in West Valley city. First thing I noticed upon arrival was ambience. The space itself is not large but the layout works really well. There is a long bar in the center with half a dozen flatscreens and tons of throwback football photos around the space. The food was great. From the polenta fries during apps to the Shula burger and Mojito durning dinner: I was impressed. THe burger was cooked medium and is the best burger i've had to date.

Their wedge salad is great and it tastes fresh but they aren't shy about dressing. I personally don't like too much dressing but most people do so you'll be happy. I asked for my steak medium rare and it came out well done . They apologized and said "their chef is new and in training" they gave me another steak still well done but by then I was starving and ate my meal. It's fairly new and kept clean. The staff is friendly by slow on refilling drinks . Still, for a restaurant in a hotel, it's a nice atmosphere.

One of my favorite places to get delicious food and great service. STEAK SANDWHICH ($14): my main choice. Could eat this every day. Real cut steak and delicious sweet, caramelized onion sauce on soft bread, and your choice of side. SHULA CUT steaks ($37): worth every penny. A steak man like myself will definitely enjoy this meal. If you like Ruth Chris is a great alternative if you're not downtown. Overall; great atmosphere and fair prices for good fresh food. Way above your typical applebees type or texas roadhouse. Be warned, it's located inside Embassy Suites hotel and so at times it might be busy with out of town business attendees. Comically you'll always hear someone from out of Utah, astonished by our weird alcohol laws and one of the friendly servers would educate them. All of which becomes background noise to a good meal.

Don Shula wins 347. Don Shula visits to the restaurant 0. It's sad because the restaurant is just a poor attachment of the hotel. I cannot see any local deciding to eat here. Meals take 20-30 minutes. The kitchen is not prepared for any rush. The bar is just for show. A draft beer has to be retrieved from far away. The bartender said the liquor and kegs are by the manager's office. Note the picture of just fake taps. Odd place wouldn't eat here unless you are stuck at hotel. 25 minutes for a Ceasar salad. Ahi tuna appetizer was decent. Waitress was 5 star service. Just cannot recommend this place.

  • John K.

Not great, not bad. The restaurant is very attractive and modern - much nicer than I would have expected being in an Embassy Suites. I sat at the "bar" to watch the basketball game and ordered a draft IPA. Since there were only two others there, I was wondering why the bartender was just standing there and it was taking 10 minutes to get my drink. When it finally came on a tray from the back, they explained their liquor license does not allow them to make drinks where kids could see. That's why they call it the "long counter" and not a "bar". Oh, and draft beer is limited to 3.2% ABV. Not the restaurant's fault, I just forgot I was in Utah. I had the Steakhouse Vegetable soup, which was good. However, the server had spilled it all over the rim of the bowl and onto the plate below, so it was an unattractive mess. Artichoke in the soup was a nice addition, but most of it had inedible stringy parts to spit out. I also had the grilled Ahi entree. Surprisingly large portion of fish, but not the best quality. I checked in on Yelp and received 10% off the food.

We used two Livingsocial coupons for one meal and was very satisfied with the food and service. I did notice a small deflation when I mentioned the coupons but service continued to be attentive. It was hard to spend $80 worth of food-alcohol not included. We ordered an appetizer of blackened scallops, starter dish of tempura shrimp-they forgot the rice noodles listed on the menu, and dessert of cheesecake. The steak was cooked to order and delicious. Good fries and I was glad to have a dose of vegetable medley consisting of zucchinis, beans, and carrots.

  • Mandy A.

I would not recommend this place especially if you are in a hurry. We arrived at 7:30 and the place was not nearly at capacity and we didn't leave until 9:30 because our food was so delayed. The appetizer came out quickly but then we waited close to an hour for the main course. We ordered the strip steak and the Milanese chicken. The strip steak was lacking in any kind of flavor and the chicken had good flavor but I don't feel like it was worth the price. The place was cold, making sitting there for such an extended time very uncomfortable. For a Friday, they were very thinly staffed.

Great food, great service. Pretty empty on a Friday night and kind of out of our way to go, but we went on a Groupon deal and were pretty happy with it. It's not a place we would go out of our way to go to again. If I went again, I'd get the steak sandwich.

First it's convenient to have a restaurant attached to the Embassy Suites hotel. Room Service food gets dull sometimes. Check into yelp get 10% off your bill ! Everytime I'm here the customer service is always great and everyone here is super friendly. The hosts always ask what your name is and the servers use it frequently which puts a personal touch to the service. Some pros and cons food wise. Cons ... the food does take quite a bit of time to cook no matter WHAT you order ... so be aware and I hope you're not in a hurry. The calamari fries and salt and pepper shrimp taste as though they are from the same batter and bland. The BBQ shrimp is horrible, the shrimp was overcooked, chewy and with the crunch I didn't realize it was supposed to be bacon. Definitely not recommended to try. People mention Shula and his steaks, I tried the filet and for $37, it was nothing that made me want to ask for more. Pros ... My favorite dish is the pan seared scallops ... super buttery and cooked perfectly yummy !! Second favorite is the blackened tenderloin tips (make sure you order medium or medium rare if you don't mind the pink) and it's great. Overall 3 stars in my book ... keep up the good service because I'm sure if you don't you'll lose a lot of business.

I had high hopes for this place being a high end steak house but the food was just meeeh, my steak was good and cooked well it just lacked much flavour, the smashed potatoes we're probably my favorite part of the meal. We did get an assortment of desserts and the bread pudding was awesome. I don't know if I'd come here again prices are high for what you get, but I'd come back just to see the waitress she was amazing...

    (3)
  • Jesse S.

The atmosphere was excellent. I think they could better season their steaks though. They cooked them to perfection but they just lacked flavor. Prices could be a bit lower. Alcohol was average bar prices and they did a good job on the drinks.

    (4)
  • John L.

Has the high end steak house feel, but something feels unsettling about something so... pretentious on the west side. The food was good, the service was good, maybe a bit smothery. We are fans of Flemmings, and this feels like a diet version of that.

I've eaten here about a dozen times while I stayed at the Embassy Suites. Shula's is the best restaurant in the immediate area but is well below average compared to what's available at other restaurants in this price range. The staff is always very friendly but the food quality is not as expected. Avoid the steaks! They are NOT Prime, they are simply Angus Beef and not aged (same beef that's available at your local grocery store BTW - Angus is a marketing brand not a grade of beef) BUT they charge the same as Prime Aged beef from a quality steakhouse ($40 / steak). The burgers are solid and salads are good but avoid the seafood. The temperature always varies considerably from one night to the other (one day medium temperature is perfect the next days it's burnt and over-well). Again, the service is great, food quality is lacking here based on how they present themselves as a high end restaurant.

I am giving 1 star for the service team they are great but the food is not good. This is my second time to Shula's. My first was on a previous visit when I stayed at the hotel it is in. I got in late that time and figured maybe that was the reason they were out of whack! Well I came back. I like to be fair before I review a place. The food was not good again! I had the special fish sandwich but they should have called it the sawdust special over cooked and no flavor. Just because Shula's name is on it doesn't make it good! I will not try this place again! Sorry the wait staff is great but the chef is not up to my standard, don't waist your time here!

Ended up at the hotel on a weekend trip to utah. Went to dinner at Schula's on someone else's dime. Agree with other reviewers....do NOT try this place if you are in a hurry. We walked in...and were vaguely told that it might be around 15 minutes wait time, despite several visible empty tables, and that we could wait at the door or...somewhere in the hotel lobby. So weird. At any rate we were then seated, quickly waited upon for our drink order...and in an effort to not waste any more time....we gave our food orders as well. Our water arrived 10 minutes later. The Prosecco had an additional 7 minute delay. I would say that our dinner (two burgers and two salads) had an additional 20-30 minute timespan in their delivery to our table. Did we mention that we had our kids with us?! Slow slow slow....but we had time to drink gallons of water. The water refills were incessant. Finally our meals arrived. My kid's burger was bigger than his head! My other kid's salad was bigger than his head! Both looked delicious! My husbands French onion burger was a hit and my Asian chicken salad was nice. Not sure which one of our meals slowed down the entire process?! Overall it was a good dinner. However....pick up the pace Shula's!

My first experience was phenomenal! Been there 3 times since and they messed up once, but the manager instantly took care of us and made it right! I can't even begin to explain how good the food is here!!! It's a must try! Get the beef tips for your appetizer!

If you are in the mood for a steak or really good BBQ shrimp that happens to be wrapped in bacon then great place to go. I take clients here and if you are looking for casual upscale this is a great place as well. The staff of upscale and takes great care of you.

It pays to check in with Yelp! This restaurant was in my hotel and we went there after work. I did a check-in with yelp and got an instant 10% off coupon that they honored for the entire table for 4. This was on an expense account, so it did not save me any money personally, but still a nice touch. The service here is at best leisurely but the food was quite good. Started with the hummus plate - very good hummus but you will need to ask for more crackers. Why give you so few up front? I had a blue cheese burger that was wonderful. The meat was as you would expect from a steakhouse but the topping was out of this world. the mix red union jam with the blue cheese and it was to die for. one of the best burgers I have had in a long time. Definitely worth a return visit.

I brought a large group to Shula's for a business dinner. The service was quick and friendly. The steaks got rave reviews from the group, and my vegetarian pasta dish was mouthwatering - in fact, I still think about it months later! I would definitely return.

  • John B.

Totally disappointed !! I've really been looking forward to trying this places So I went last night with a group of six coworkers and we were completely disappointed they messed up every one of our dishes ,they overcooked our steaks The food runners forgot our side dishes and brought our salads out after our main dish came out !! Really ??? we could not believe how unorganized it was not to mention I felt that the steak was not worth the money I have honestly had a better steak at Texas roadhouse !! The only reason I'm giving two stars is because I thought the atmosphere was great and our waitress although very frustrated with the kitchen and food runner did her best to accommodate us and I had a very good Irish coffee but I truly expected a better experience!

Went for a birthday dinner. The whole family loved it. Great food at a reasonable price. Sat in the private party room with a nice big screen of the 49er/Seahawks game and had great service as well. Definitely going back. Went on Living Social coupon and the advertising worked. Please fellow Utahns, as a former server that took lots of "Happenings" cards tip off the full bill and not the discounted amount. :)

Update: I was contacted by a rep for the restaurant who was very nice, seemed to understand that a vinaigrette with mayonnaise in it is not a vinaigrette but a dressing and my other issues, and was kind enough to invite me to try again. While I appreciated the gesture, I declined.

    (1)
  • Carl T.

Just good not great I would have expected better for the price. The decor was nice and the steak was really good but the Pan Seared Scallops fell short. Staff was the best part of the experience. It would be good for a date night but not so much for a group of 18.

Not your typical Shula's. I am from Florida and I have been to several Shula's this one is different. The Bar isn't a real bar. You can sit there, eat and drink BUT they can't make drinks at the bar. If you do not mind waiting a VERY long time for drinks and food sit at the bar. You also MUST order food if you drink alcohol. Rachel is the best server there! She saw me sitting at the bar for a while got me a water and offered to take my drink order. She tracked down the 'bartender" who then came back to the bar and spoke to everyone at the bar. Rachel told him that I had been waiting a while and he still addressed everyone else at the bar before me and then told me he was working on my drink. Not if your standing at the fake bar dude. He did not bring me my drink the manager did...I was told I HAD to order food. Rachel checked in on me, gave me great food recommendations and wine recommendations too! She saved my meal. The Pinot Noir was great! The Margherita pizza was great. The wedge salad with homemade blue cheese dressing was great. THANK YOU RACHEL!!

3 words: CHICKEN STREET TACOS. I literally eat them at least once a week. I dream about them. I have yet to try one of the steaks but it's on my to-do list for the month!

Blueberry Martini=Awesome. Steak Flatbread=good plus. Appetizer BBQ Shrimp=Overcooked Shrimp, way too much BBQ sauce. Funny that they show AWESOME bacon wrapped shrimp in a menu on the elevator. The appetizer was HORRIBLE and $14.00. We quit ordering food after the Overcooked appetizer. #meh

Went to dinner at 6:30/7 without a reservation. Ordered the seared Ahi as an appetizer, was delicious but I wasn't a fan of the wasabi cream as I don't usually enjoy wasabi =] Had the best drinks I've tasted in a while. I ordered the white sangria and my boyfriend had the mojito! Thanks to Joey for the awesome drinks! I ordered the filet mignon, which was the perfect portion for me. I ordered medium, knowing it would probably come out medium rare which is what I wanted. Had asparagus and smashed potatoes as my two sides. Both were good, but I'd like less balsamic on the asparagus. Overall, great meal! It was good, but I don't know how often I'd go as the price is a little much for my budget.

I really enjoyed my experience here. The food was excellent and the service was incredible. I came in late so we just sat at the bar. And I never had an empty glass. And food came out promptly. I started with the wedge salad, easily my favorite salad. Huge portion that could be shared for two with no problem. Then I had the wine country burger. MMMMMMM I have had a lot of burgers in my life. But this one has to be on the top of any list. I would suggest this first if you are on a budget. One thing I noticed on the menu that I liked. Unlike most of the high end steak houses. All steaks come with two sides for the price. A very nice change from all the a la carte places I have ate in the past. I can't wait for my next visit. And I will be having a steak for sure.

Comfortable and upscale with excellent service. Starter was scallops on chopped mango. Wedge and arugula salads. Sliced strip steak. All very good and nicely presented. Several small rooms offer private or business dining. Located in the new and beautiful Embassy Suites in West Valley City, Utah.

Came here on a Tuesday night as a guest at the hotel Seated at the bar bartender / server paid little to no attention to me Ordered the skirt steak; mediocre at best for $22 I would much prefer go elsewhere for a better quality meal without the price. Pro: good decor, good crowd, clean, Con: after having the skirt steak wouldn't trust dropping nearly $40 on their signature steaks

Good steak, had the cowboy . I still prefer Spencer's or Ruth's. This place has easy access just off the lobby of the Embassy suites. Creme brûlée was way to rich for my taste.

Me and my family ate there, the staff was wonderful and very attentive to my wife needs considering she has a gluten-free allergy... They went above and beyond for her... Plus the food was great...defiantly will be back... Thanks for making our Valentines Day a special one REGGIE & GALE

The food wasn't bad. We ordered crab cakes as an appetizer. They were GREAT! Definitely overpriced though. I ordered the Wine Country Burger. It was pretty unimpressive. The bun was soggy and the fries were lukewarm. My friend ordered the Club Shula. It was actually pretty good. She ended up sharing with me because I was kind of bummed about my burger. The service was weird. They were friendly, but over-the-top and almost phony to the point that it was awkward. The best thing about this experience was the Yelp offer when you check in, mainly because everything is so damn overpriced. Probably won't be returning.

Top quality food and service in West Valley! I have been to all the high end steak houses and hotels downtown and my experience at Shula's beat them all hands down. Waiting staff was on point and food was delectable. Just be prepared to pay out the wazoo for it. Started with calamari and mixed drinks, calamari was fresh came with a delicious fancy marinara and a mustard aioli that tasted like blan mayonnaise. I got the ahi tuna good sized portion crisp vegetables tuna was seared and raw how I like it. My dad (his birthday dinner) got the cowboy steak done medium well the manager seemed genuinely concerned if it was cooked to satisfaction, it was. My brother got the scallops fantastic flavor but the dish was tiny. I don't hold the price against a place as long as the food and service are on par saying that averaging 50$ a plate for us with drinks and tip they had to do an exceptional job and delivered.

Shula's is probably a little higher than 3 stars for a restaurant in a hotel, but if you took it out of the hotel, I'm a lot less impressed. But when you don't get off work until 8, and have to drive back to SLC from Provo, you kind of take what's nearby and not fast food. I ate there twice on a recent five day business trip to SLC, and it was my least favorite out of the places I ate. The restaurant itself feels kind of sterilely modern, if that makes sense to anyone but me. It's sleek but incredibly bland, I guess. The food is alright. A little oversalted for my liking, but everything was prepared nicely and the prices weren't too ridiculous for hotel food. I have to admit to not getting a steak which is the house specialty, but the first night I was craving a burger and the second the ahi was calling my name. Definitely go for the ahi over the burger! That was pretty tasty.

I went here for lunch with colleagues from work. The service was very good and our waitress was very attentive. I loved that they had small plates that we could share. The hummus was very good and I would recommend the bleu cheese chips as well. As for entrees, I had the "Long Island Strip" which was very flavorful and tender. My colleagues had the "Chicken Milanese" and the "Steak Sandwich", and both were very happy with their choices. I will definitely be going back to try their hamburger and their other small plates.

I've eaten here for dinner three times, all while staying at the Embassy. The customer service is impeccable, and the staff is incredibly attentive. The steak is very good, but for the price ($37, includes 2 sides) I was expecting true steakhouse quality, and they didn't quite deliver. Stick with the signature entrees: all are under $30, and I was very happy with the two that I tried (braised short rib and the blackened market fish). Shula's is easily the best non-chain restaurant in this area.

We happened to be staying at the Embassy Suites for a weekend event in west valley and happened upon Shula's. I am not sure how others find the place, but we were happy we did. We were seated promptly, the food was decent and the service was friendly. But nothing to write home about so that is how you get three stars. Come on Shula's, give me something to write home about! I'd give you another shot!
